select festival 2018
Welcome
placing makers
Hello. Welcome to the 2018 Select Festival and Select Trail open studios. This year we have over 70 artists and 8 venues in the main Festival and 60 artists participating in the Trail. What better place to be than the Cotswolds and the Stroud Valleys in May. The Festival oozes creativity with artists exhibiting and delivering workshops from the crème de la crème of the visual arts. SIT select gives a platform to showcase the incredible talent that resides in the UK and in this brilliant beautiful and creative county. We look forward to opening our doors to welcome you. A huge thanks to our partners and supporters and to Renishaw plc who once again have supported our work this year.

Primary Traveller opens at the Select Festival Hannah Waldron’s new work Primary Traveller is a nomadic modular structure that will house a new body of weavings specially created for this exhibition. Commissioned by and for the Select Festival. The focal point of the exhibition is a textile installation intended to serve as a meeting place for discussion around the role of textiles and tapestry today. The project is an inversion of Waldron’s previous works which documented spatial experience through weaving and instead uses woven forms to construct a new space. The work utilises the structural qualities of weaving to develop a celebratory space for contemporary textile practises within both art and craft production and exhibition ecologies. The woven forms within the installation link archetypal textile design language with the built environment and reflect both the skeletal remnants of manufacturing infrastructure and its latent potential for small-scale renewal. Alongside are the Map Tapestries and other retrospective works that have previously toured internationally but have not yet been shown in England.
