It has meant a lot of sweat and sore thimbles but we’re pleased to announce that Insider has expanded its media landscape with the launch of our interactive website in 5 languages – English, French, Russian, Mandarin and Turkish. We now have a true cross-platform media offering, engaging our readers with relevant information, daily. That means you can have access to the latest in art and entertainment, food and drink, and film listings with an optimized search plus access to Insider’s well-researched articles from the past 14 years. October also sees the launch of a weekly newsletter in French, Bonjour Weekly, to reach out to our French-speaking readers.

publisher’s note This Back to Business issue is packed with a few high-powered interviews from internationally acclaimed chef Nobusan to the unconventional Greek-American queen of retail, Sophia Amoruso. Wine-maker Gerovassiliou uncorks the blessings and challenges of wine-making in his native Epanomi while fellow-Thessalonikians, the Beetroot design agency, have been wowing audiences in Chicago with their Greek Monsters exhibition. Their quirky, adorable monsters grace our cover this month. Another remarkable personality who has prompted Greeks to give up their couches and run, cycle, swim or simply cheer - Marina Lida-Coutarelli, shares her Athens with Insider. It has been a year tinged with optimism after a summer where tourist arrivals hit an all-time high. Celebrating that remarkable turnaround in Athens’ image as a preferred destination will be luxury travel experts at the International New York Times’ Luxury Hospitality Conference and a thousand bloggers who will be swooping into the city to share their experiences here at TBEX 2014. Opa!

Athens welcomes travel bloggers from all over the globe at TBEX 2014 for four actionpacked days

A

thens gears itself for TBEX 2014 - the mecca for travel bloggers, writers, podcasters, new media content creators and social media-savvy travel industry professionals. The fourday event will be held in Athens from October 23 to 25, marking Athens’ remarkable comeback as a preferred destination for business and leisure. Jointly organized by the Athens Convention Bureau and the Greek National Tourism Organization, TBEX translates as a unique opportunity to showcase Athens as an independent tourist destination to an international audience in different languages. The presence of a thousand travel bloggers, touring authors and writers weaving dreams and sharing their experiences, is a wonderful PR exercise for a city that was ostracized by tour operators and travel agencies not so long ago. To ensure that these travel bugs are wowed by the city, the organizers have painstakingly created 50 alternative experiences and itineraries for them to enjoy their four-day stay here. Being chosen as the destination for TBEX 2014 in itself was a huge achievement

12 insider athens | September & October 2014

and a vindication of the renewed faith TBEX had in the city. Athens was chosen as the venue after a difficult and highly competitive bid by the Municipality of Athens and the Athens Convention Bureau that began in October 2013, at the IMEX exhibition in the US. What is remarkable, is that the event has brought together several of the public sector players in an exemplary show of solidarity. The Ministry of Culture and Sport will provide tickets for free entry to all museums and archaeological sites in Greece, while the Ministry of Transport will provide tickets for all public transport, the Athens International Airport will pitch in too and municipalities from all over Greece have pooled in their resources to provide gifts and local goodies to the participants. A series of conferences, art exhibitions, culinary trips, concerts, street parties, cruises, shopping excursions and winetastings will be squeezed into the fourday affair. The main conference takes place at the Athens Concert Hall. For more info, visit thisisathens.org.

Travel

A remarkable turnaround, worthy of a case study, from a capital shunned by tour operators and travel agents, to a soughtafter darling of the international tourism market. 2014 is estimated to have drawn 20 million tourists… and counting. A brief look at the strategies adopted by the Greek National Tourism Organization and the Athens Convention Bureau that spurred a change-of-heart and put Athens back on the international tourism agenda.

R

ewind to 2008. Until then, Greece invoked hedonistic images of islandhopping, cruising around the coast, a vibrant nightlife, camaraderie, wholesome Mediterranean cuisine, the feel-good glow of the Olympic Games, rich history and an unlimited choice of tantalizing islands to choose from. That image of Greece as a fun-loving destination with history changed when images of widespread protests against austerity measures dominated TV screens across the world. The alarmist signals those round-theclock images sent, spiraled an already fragile economy further south, as tourism accounts for almost a fifth of Greece’s jobs and GDP. Tourist confidence hit rock-bottom in 2012 with the uncertainty of the national elections and a possible exit from the Eurozone looming. Bookings were cancelled and Athens was a no-go zone even for tour operators with a soft spot for Greece – the risks of a currency change and political uncertainty were simply not worth taking. What a pleasure to then appreciate that 2014 has been a record year ever for tourist arrivals. An outcome even the most sanguine one-eyed optimists wouldn’t have ventured a year ago.

While domestic economic and political stability has contributed to a great extent, the joint strategies adopted by the Athens Convention Bureau, the Greek National Tourism Organization and the Municipality of Athens paid a ma-

jor role in convincing the international tourism market to return in ever larger numbers. The negative shift had largely been due to the international media focusing on a bunch of protestors occupying a few square metres implying that Athens was unsafe and violent. Anyone on the ground could have countered that perception. The truegreece campaign launched by GNTO did precisely that with affidavits, videos, blogs and comments on how wonderful their experience had been in the city. The MyAthens strategy adopted by the Municipality of Athens and the Athens Convention Bureau helped communicate that point too with tourists sharing their unique experience of the city. The vindication of those cumulative efforts is evident in the figures: tourism is proving to be the key driver of economic growth with 17.9 million international arrivals in 2013 and 12.2 billion euros in direct tourism revenue. Tourism alone contributed to 16.4 percent of the country’s gross domestic product – marking the first signs of recovery and the first time in half a century that Greece posted a primary budget surplus. It is positive news that tourism professionals in Greece are keen to share ahead of the International Luxury Conference on October 13-14 in Athens when luxury travel experts descend on the city and of TBEX from October 23-25 when 1000 travel bloggers relive their experiences online. i

A MARATHON FILM PROJECT: The Road to Sparta “Ultramarathon Man” Dean Karnazes is set to feature in a new film about the Spartathlon, the annual 246k race from Athens to Sparta. The film – called, appropriately enough, The Road to Sparta - is being directed by Barney Spender, once of Athens International Radio and contributor to Athens Insider. It follows the fortunes of Karnazes and three other runners, including Athens nurse Angela Terzi, as they attempt to complete the punishing course.“It is a truly magnificent race and it is an exciting project that I have wanted to do since I first came across the Spartathlon in 2006,” says Spender. “It has history, it has pain, it has glory. And it has some beautiful landscapes.”And it also has Karnazes, perhaps the best-known long-distance runner in the world because of his various books, including his autobiography “Ultramarathon Man”. “I am writing a book about Pheidippides so I want to take on the course using only the foods and drink that would have been available to him two and half thousand years ago,” says Karnazes. It is an entirely independent film which means Spender is still raising money through crowdfunding. You can find out more at Indiegogo and at the Facebook page The Road to Sparta Movie.

The Forum brings together local government representatives, scientists, civil society and business partners from both shores of the Mediterranean to help strengthen synergies within its network of 52 Mediterranean cities. During the Forum, a “College of Mayors” from the Mediterranean cities of Beirut, Cadiz, Byblos, Saida, Baalbeck, and other Greek cities will be hosted by Mayor of Athens Mr. George Kaminis. Tyre Foundation President Mrs. Maha Chalabi will honour Ms. Rodi Kratsa, former Vice-President of the European Parliament, for her contribution to promoting Euro-Mediterranean relations.

GRAND ART OF SEDUCTION Don McKellar, the Canadian director whose film premiered at the 20th Athens International Film Festival, recounts the hilarious story of an island community seducing a doctor to stay on the island. McKellar who spent four days in Athens was delighted by the response of Athenian cinephiles to the film. “I knew that the film had universal appeal but it nonetheless felt good to hear and see the reaction of the audience as the scenes unfolded on the screen. They connected to it.” Apparently, quite a few members of the film crew were tempted to try and seek a new life at New Foundland, where the film was set. On Athens, McKellar said that he was “positively surprised at the vibrancy of the city” and suggested that it could well be the setting for a future film if the script permitted.

A

s the Founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, the fastest-growing online retailer in the country, Sophia Amoruso is the creative visionary, modern-day entrepreneur and fashion doyenne who has forged an unprecedented path in building a modern brand. At only 30 years old, she has become one of the most prominent figures in retail and a cultural icon who has worked from the ground up and landed on top of a fashion empire named Nasty Gal - a term originally coined after a 1975 Betty Davis album and the singer’s outspoken and unapologetically sexy style. Building on that inspiration, Sophia Amoruso’s Nasty Gal first sparked a cult following in her one-woman vintage venture on eBay where she quickly learned she had a knack and photographer’s eye for fashion, styling and buying. Amoruso says that her early mistakes were crucial in helping her build Nasty Gal from a simple eBay store selling vintage items in 2006 to a $100m business with more than 350 employees selling cool, quirky new and used clothing items to millions of women around the world. Named by Forbes as “Fashion’s New Phenom,” Amoruso’s rising success and business savvy was touted for being “up there with retail’s most profitable ventures.”

From shoplifting to being the queen of retail, this Greek goddess of fashion does it her way with oodles of attitude. Not your typical entrepreneur, and certainly not cut from the same cloth as legions of mainstream fashion bosses, Sophia Amoruso, the new it-girl of e-fashion speaks of her Greek entrepreneurial streak and her recent book, #Girlboss in an exclusive interview with Sudha Nair-Iliades

16 insider athens | September & October 2014

With relentless obsession over all things web and social media, Amoruso has propelled her brand’s unforgettable aesthetic on every channel including her 1 million followers on Facebook and Instagram. As these carefully curated pages have “translated

‘likes’ into sales” according to Forbes, Amoruso has revolutionized marketing with a business built almost entirely on social media from day one, today drawing millions of visitors back to the Nasty Gal site every month. “Using social media allowed me to have a conversation with our customers - I would say it was the number one reason we created awareness,” she adds. She pioneered the idea of styling outfits from head to toe and mixing old and new, expensive and cheap and made sure that Nasty Gal wasn’t just a retail website, but a lifestyle that could appeal to a certain type of woman. That has helped to build loyalty - most customers are women in their 20s who return again and again to the site, buying up 93% of Nasty Gal’s inventory at full price. Half of the site’s business comes from return customers - something almost unheard of in retail circles. Sophia Amoruso has big plans for Nasty Gal - including opening physical retail stores later this year - and while she knows her rags-to-riches tale of a naive ingenue is appealing, she is careful to emphasise just how much hard work and what she calls ‘sweat equity’ got her to where she is today. As she counsels future girlbosses in her memoir: “Don’t act like you’ve arrived when you’re just receiving the invitation.”

On #GIRLBOSS: Your book is full of charming self-deprecating tidbits and DIY advice for young women. Did you realize that #GirlBoss would be catapulted in the same league as Sheryl Sandberg’s ‘Lean In’ as an empowering tool for young, ambitious millennials? Does the comparison rile you? #GIRLBOSS is somewhat of an audio exposé. It’s my story about how I started Nasty Gal and it recalls the experiences that primed me for the position I’m in today. I was excited to share my journey to date — I speak to how I made mistakes and broke rules. I also provide insight into the lessons I learned and how I grew in order to achieve success with Nasty Gal. I had previously told parts of the story to media along the way, but I felt it was time for me to put it all together in my perspective to directly share with my readers.

On Nasty Gal: How do you align the apparent paradox of being the rulebending cool hipster to the darling of Wall Street? Do you think that Nasty Gal’s street cred could take a hit from getting too big and perhaps, too mainstream? For Nasty Gal, the future is about evolving the brand in every way possible rather than limiting it. On a larger scale, I would

like Nasty Gal to be one of the most valued and admired fashion brands in the world. We can do that while continuing to stand for what we always have and have fun with it while breaking the rules.

On Greekness: At the Gabby Awards last year you said that ‘it renewed a pride of being Greek that I didn’t know was possible.’ What does being Greek mean to you? Being Greek to me means individual determination and success. The majority of Greek immigrants tended to be business owners, whether operating a mom-and-pop grocery store like my great-grandparents or managing a piano store like my Papou. I come from a long tradition of self-made success. My roots are full of persistent individuals who never let anything or anyone place limits on what they could accomplish.

Amoruso debuted her highly anticipated, first book titled #GIRLBOSS under the Portfolio and Putnam imprints of Penguin Random House earlier this year. The book tells Amoruso’s extraordinary personal story and offers insights on entrepreneurship and career advice for young women.

Have you thought of stocking Greek designers / Greek-inspired clothing on Nasty Gal?

Extract from Sophia Amoruso’s book, #GIRLBOSS

Nasty Gal gets endless inspiration from cultures throughout the world. We currently carry styles from a number of international brands and are always looking for new designers and trends to add to the site. I would love having more of a Greek presence within Nasty Gal’s buy. You mentioned recently in an interview that your dream escape would be ‘on a yacht in the Mediterranean.’ Have you ever taken time off? In Greece?

Nasty Gal in figures

I have been to Greece on two occasions - Most recently with my fiancé to relax and enjoy the island of Santorini. And when I was younger as a teenager at a church summer camp. I truly enjoy the pace of life there, the cuisine and the gorgeous scenery. I hope to return with my mom one day and experience it through her eyes. i

The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion—it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, Sophia had resigned herself to working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was there that she decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and Creative Director of Nasty Gal. #GIRLBOSS includes Sophia’s story, yet is infinitely bigger than Sophia. Here is a man, at age 65, who wakes up at 4 am to workout. Nobu moved to Peru in 1973 and later to Argentina, infusing traditional Japanese food with South American spice and ingredients. After opening a few ill-fated restaurants, he finally found success in 1987 with his Matsuhisa restaurant in Beverly Hills. What exactly influences your dishes? I am Japanese but I lived in Peru, Argentina, Alaska and LA. So I have a basic Japanese technique, taste and presentations intermixed with many different countries I have lived in or travelled to. I started the Nobu concept as a Japanese one with Peruvian influence. Here in Greece, I make the ceviche with Feta cheese, so I include hints of local and seasonal produce. We also use Greek olive oil in our dishes in Athens in Mykonos. What is your favourite restaurant in Greece, outside of your own? In Mykonos there is a taverna called Kiki’s on Agios Sostis beach. It’s very traditional and simple. I eat there everytime I go to Mykonos. What is your favourite dish at Kiki’s? I love the salads, squid, octopus and then the pork chop. Its very tender and delicious. Have you been to any other islands other than Mykonos? I have been to Santorini and Rhodes on a cruise but my favourite is Mykonos. Other than Japanese food, what is your 2nd favourite cuisine? Italian and Chinese. I like all Asian food in

general. I also love Greek food…its simple with local high quality ingredients. It’s hard to pick a 2nd favourite. You discuss the importance of Kokoro (heart) in your cooking, why is that so important to you? Well growing up, it begins with your mother cooking your food for you. You always remember and think about her cooking. She is your food mentor. She cooks and provides for you - from her heart. My mother’s cooking was an education for me. She was the one who inspired me to cook. How old were you when you decided to become a chef? Well my father passed away when I was 8. I had two older brothers who I looked up to. When I was 12, my older brother took me to a nice sushi restaurant with sliding doors, lots of energy, friendly staff. We sat on the sushi bar to eat and it was the first time I had sushi and it inspired me. It was delicious. When you began working in restaurants in Japan, you worked your way from the bottom up, how did this help you? I was a dishwasher, I cleaned tables, I delivered food for three years. These positions are an integral part of a restaurant. We need these people to succeed and I understand and feel for them because I have been there. What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome? I almost killed myself at 29. I had just opened a restaurant in Alaska which caught fire a few days after opening. My whole world came crashing down. I had two kids at the time, they were 1.5 years and 8 months old. Kids have no idea about the stress and problems

their parents are going through. I couldn’t smile, I couldn’t eat and I couldn’t drink water. I was lost. My kids would come around me with their cheerful spirits, playing, smiling and they were so appreciative that their father was home with them. My wife was right by my side helping me and supporting me. They are the ones who propelled me through that dark time. It was also the best lesson and learning experience. Everything I have learned in life was from my mistakes. Tell us a little bit about your partnership with Robert DeNiro and how that developed. I was introduced to Bob around ’88 by his good friend and my regular customer at my restaurant in LA. After he had visited a few times, people began to ask me, “You know DeNiro?!” But I didn’t really know who he was exactly. Before LA, I was living in South America. I knew the name but I didn’t know his face or movies because I was always working and didn’t speak English or Spanish so I couldn’t even have watched his movies! He was quite persistent about approaching you to open a restaurant in New York together. He invited me to come visit him in New York in 1990. He had just bought a building in Tribeca and told me he wanted to open a restaurant together. I was very hesitant. I didn’t have the best experience with prior partners in my other restaurant. I had just opened Nobu in LA and it was not properly organized yet. So I told him “Thank you so much, but I am not ready.” Bob understood my situation and was not pushy at all. After about 4 years he called my house and said “Nobu, I think maybe now is the right time to come

to New York.” I was surprised. The biggest Hollywood star was patiently waiting for me. Nobu New York opened in 1994. You were the first chef to introduce the Black Cod Miso dish. What brought you to create it? In terms of the sauce, marinating and using sauces is very important to our cooking culture in Japan. Marinating was necessary to keep fish fresh. I developed the sauce and then decided to use Black Cod because it was so soft and tender - it melted in your mouth. It was also very cheap in those days, 25 cents per pound and now it is 7-10 dollars a pound. No one was using this fish so it was a good opportunity to try something new. Do you have time to enjoy what you have built with your hectic schedule flying to different countries daily visiting your restaurants? The last 3 - 4 years, I have finally begun taking proper vacations. In the past, I used to take a vacation every few years but it was a restaurant cruise so I was also working. But now I built a house in Japan in Hakone. It’s a mountain region with natural hot springs and is very therapeutic. I am surrounded by peace, quiet and nature. I can disconnect and shut off my phone. It’s my favourite place in the world. If you had to give advice to aspiring chefs about the ‘secret recipe’ to success, what would it be? As a Chef you need just this: technique, sense, always striving to be better, always looking for and using the top quality ingredients, and kokoro - passion. If you could give a life lesson, what would it be? Never, never give up. Keep on going. Always do everything with your heart and passion. So patience, appreciation, passion and resilience. i

(Serves 8) 190 gr Miso paste 190 gr Caster sugar 0.560 lt Sake 0.560 lt Mirin (sweet sake)

750 gr Jalapeno 1.2 kg Chilean sea bass 3 Limes 100 gr Ginger, pickled

Place the sake and the mirin in a casserole and heat to a boil, flambé and add the sugar. Mix until all the sugar is melted then pour in the miso paste, blend and heat back to a boil. Remove from heat and allow the mix to cool down. Add the chilli (half of the chilli without the seed), blend with a mixer and pass through a chinois etamine (strainer). If you cannot find Chilean sea bass, use unsalted cod.

‘I chose this dish because Chilean sea bass is my favourite fish and the combination of sweetness from the Den Miso and the spice of the Jalapeno create a unique flavour that I enjoy very much.’

Cut the fish into 150gr portions and place in a plastic container. Pour into the same container 3/4 of the miso jalapeno and mix until the fish is covered in sauce. Marinate for 48 hours. Grill the skin side first for 5 minutes and then finish cooking the fish by baking in an oven (180°C) for about 18 minutes. Add sauce to plate as a coulis, place the fish on the plate, add the ginger and five slices of lime. Serve and enjoy.

The monsters of the ancient Greek mythology were born nearly three thousand years before our time, in the fantastic tales created and told by people who lived and thrived in the area we now call Greece.

The Greek Monsters, a series of post-black-figured illustrations by Greek designers Beetroot, for a book titled ‘The Misunderstood Monsters of Greek Mythology’, present contemporary symbols through sculptures, paintings and interactive displays, re-establishing Greek mythology’s central role in western storytelling. The exhibition runs at the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago until May 2015. The exhibition consists of three dimensional figures, (like a three meter high Minotaur), small sculptures, graffiti paintings (resembling a contemporary frieze) and audiovisual and interactive components. Each item is paired with an information plate that instead of stating its “origins and history” presents poems or characteristics that each monster represents (i.e. the Stymphalian Birds represent “teamwork”, Cyclops is associated with “originality” etc.). The exhibition attempts to blend the boundaries between design, primitive art installations and an archaeological museum exhibition in order to fuse a seemingly archetypal iconography with an iconoclastic edge.

The Stymphalian Birds Hercules was sent to defeat these birds, which came as a plague to Lake Stymphalia in Arcadia.

Cerberus a wild and frightening dog with three or more heads, was the guardian of the entrance to the underworld. Hades.

The Greek monsters are presented as contemporary symbols for all with the goal of reestablishing Greek mythology’s position in the heart of western civilization. Beetroot welcomes visitors to engage with its monsters and their stories in order to re-invent and reintroduce a timeless Greek creative identity and strengthens the position of contemporary Greece in the global creative map. The Greek Monsters exhibition has been touring the world engaging children and adults alike with oversized, colourful creatures, recounting classic mythological tales in a modern, appealing way. For each new destination on the tour, a brand-new monster and poem are designed to pay homage to the host city. Chicago’s monster is Lernaia Hydra, a regenerating water creature that represents persistence and survival in the face of hardships. Located in Chicago’s Greek Town, the sleek 40,000-square-foot National Hellenic Museum is both contemporary and timeless, connecting all generations - past, present and future - to the rich heritage of Greek history, culture, art and the Greek American experience. The Museum also serves as America’s center for preserving, nurturing and sharing Greek culture and a gathering place for celebrations and events. i For more information, visit nationalhellenicmuseum.org

Is Athens an artists’ paradise? Athens is a truly inspirational city as it combines a vibrant, hip cultural scene with the sophisticated architectural sites which form the pillars of Western history such as the Acropolis, or the Temple of Olympian Zeus. I would definitely describe it as a photographer’s paradise as the light in the different parts of the city is everchanging and beautiful especially at dusk. Personally, I love visiting the Athenian

tessential Athenian hot dog in the canteen across the street!) and Drunk Sinatra. In general, all summer long I also enjoy open air cinemas - especially the one in Thisseio with spectacular views of the Acropolis.

Your all-time favourite restaurant? I love eating old fashioned Greek food at “Oikonomou” tavern in Petralona. It is a small family owned restaurant which has been around for over 50 years, renowned for its “mageireyta” - stews. I especially love the “lachanodolmades” with avgolemono- stuffed cabbage leaves with mince and rice. Across the street is Zefiros a great open air cinema which is the first one to open - sometimes even as early as the beginning of March and the last one to close - and I love huddling up under a wrap of blanket and enjoying a great film. Alternatively, if I am in the mood for meat- I love the all time classic taste of the cafe de paris fillet at Abreuvoir restaurant in Kolonaki.

Describe your perfect Sunday in Athens. An early morning swim at the Holmes Place pool in the city center, followed by a skinny latte with the Sunday papers enjoyed in the Palia Agora, across from the Acropolis. Afterwards, perhaps brunch at Mama Roux and an exhibition at the Benaki Museum.

Where do you unwind after work? It depends largely on the season! In the summer, I like the southern suburbs as they are close to the sea- I often have cocktails at the Malabar bar at the Margi hotel and then a stroll in Vouliagmeni. In the city center, I often visit “42” bar for its great cocktails and two of my recent favourites are “Kyrios” in Mavili Square (often followed by a quin-

The smell of the blossoming “neratzies” (bitter orange trees) in the centre of Athens in spring. When I used to live in Thission, it was my favorite time of the year when these tiny white flowers were in full bloom. What’s your favorite city stroll? Through the pedestrian road of Dionysiou Areopagitiou- towards the Monastiraki subway station. Otherwise I love walking in the National Garden, which brings back childhood memories What is the ideal souvenir from Greece? An “Atokos” bag from the Road to Rio series,

Any favorite shops or boutiques? “Forget me not in Plaka”, features many great Greek designers including Idisti and Greece is for lovers. Best place to get away from it all? In Kesariani- surrounded by joggers and the cyclists with spectacular views right across to Aegina island. Most positive change in Athens over the last ten years? The community and athletic spirit which has evolved. It is heartwarming to see cyclists, and runners taking over the streets. Also projects such as the Atenistas which have transformed neighborhoods through a common purpose and an urge to do good and give back. Do you think the crisis will in the long term have a positive impact? I am by nature a positive person, so I hope so. If you were mayor for a day, what would you change? The traffic! i

Abu Dhabi’s journey to becoming the Gulf’s most sophisticated tourism destination is underway. The UAE’s jewel in the sand is all about cultural connections, writes Mike Sweet

A

ll that glitters is not gold’ is a saying that might well be applied to the United Arab Emirate’s competing cities: Dubai - the tall, bejewelled temptress, Abu Dhabi her more veiled, quieter sibling. But the balance is shifting between these beguiling rivals. While Dubai may have the tallest building in the world in the Burj Khalifa, and be the UAE’s most aggressively marketed metropolis, don’t tell anyone, but the Emirates’ capital is delicately lifting her sister’s crown. Snatching the marketing tagline ‘connecting the world’ was a smart move for Dubai - along with an invitation for its visitors to embrace its luxury shop-tilyou drop philosophy - but Abu Dhabi is different. Its vision - as a bespoke tourism destination and global travel hub - is fast being realised, and nowhere is that intent more powerfully reflected than in the transformation of one of the 200 islands that make up the UAE capital. Saadiyat Island, 20 minutes from downtown, is being recreated into something extraordinary: a cultural quarter the like of which has never been seen before in the Middle East. Two iconic global institutions lie at the heart of the story: the Guggenheim and Louvre Museums. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi - which will open its doors in 2017 - moves beyond a definition of art premised on geography, to focus on the interconnected dynamics of local, regional, and international contemporary art practice. Designed by architect Frank Gehry (who created Guggenheim Bilbao), the design for Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will incorporate cone structures - recalling the region’s ancient wind-towers - to cool the museum’s courtyards. It’s a fitting blend of Arabian design combining tradition with cutting-edge contemporary. The Louvre Abu Dhabi concept is about sharing ‘universal memory’. This desert version of the Musée du Louvre will present the most significant objects in world history from the fields of archaeology and the fine arts. Louvre Abu Dhabi’s ambition and lineage is profound, tracing its ancestry to the Age of Enlightenment in 18th century Europe - the movement that gave birth to the principle of a universal museum, revealing the arts and sciences to humanity. Led by the Louvre, France’s great museums will help curate the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection, loaning works for the permanent galleries and exhibitions. This meeting of western Europe and the Middle East is a sublime fit, reflecting the city’s position as an ancient and contemporary crossroads. That notion will underpin Louvre Abu Dhabi’s philosophy, and in doing so, shift the gravity of where the world chooses to reflect on its cultural heritage. Construction of Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to be complete in 2015. To glimpse the scale of the Saadiyat Island project, head to the island’s purpose-built visitor centre - Manarat Al Saadiyat (which translates from Arabic as ‘place of enlightenment’). Its permanent display is The Saadiyat Story, a vast interactive exhibition originally created for Shanghai’s 2010 World Expo. This

breathtaking show brings alive the plan for the island - the product of a hugely creative and dynamic society, where ancient legacies - and the foresight of the country’s 20th century leaders - have ensured a future for the UAE where education and enlightenment are key. Alongside the edifices of the Louvre and Guggenheim, Saadiyat’s Cultural District will house one other institution - The Zayed National Museum reflecting the achievements and values of the ‘father of the nation’ - Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004) - who guided the UAE to unification and led the social and cultural development of his country. When I visited, Manarat Al Saadiyat was presenting the much-acclaimed exhibition A history of the world in 100 objects. It’s a perfect prologue to Abu Dhabi’s grand designs. Curated largely from the British Museum’s vast collection of ancient artefacts - the objects in the vitrines from across the globe (and across time itself) tell a fascinating story. The exhibition is a timely reminder that artefacts - created from humanity’s experience over millennia - reflect the differences, and more importantly the similarities - between our world today and cultures of the past. One object to recently appear on Abu Dhabi’s skyline is perhaps a contemporary and commercial reflection of that concept. There’s no shortage of 5-star luxury hotels to choose from in the UAE capital, but one new and elegant addition offers a unique experience. If you’re after an Arabian night with a delicate asian touch, the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi - centrally located in the city’s government district - is the place to stay. With 402 guest rooms and 131 apartments, it’s a luxury haven - for business or leisure - with a Thai twist. One example of the next generation of creative managers helping

steer Abu Dhabi’s tourism industry to ever greater heights is Dusit Thani’s marketing communications manager - Nabila Filali Tilioui. When I raise the notion of comparing Abu Dhabi with the UAE’s more hyped metropolis, the 28-year-old Ms Tilioui - who moved from Morocco to pursue her career here - says the capital’s unique assets are becoming clearer to visitors wanting more than glitz. “Dubai is the wild-child, but this city is more family-orientated, there are more outdoor activities, more resorts, with a highlight on the cultural,” she says, looking out to the shimmering horizon from Dusit Thani’s refined Club Lounge. Nabila calls her home of three years ‘the 20 minute city’. “That’s how long it takes to get to pretty much anywhere,” she says with familiar affection. “I can go kayaking through the mangroves, to the beach at Saadiyat, visit beautiful resorts, I can windsurf, take a catamaran cruise, or a desert safari…it’s all here.” Yes it is all here. Abu Dhabi - this ancient crossroads redefined - is a dynamic city where natural delights and cultural revelations are shaping its destiny. This desert rose is no mirage. In June, Abu Dhabi International Airport welcomed the first arrival of Aegean Airlines’ first commercial flight from Athens. The new service - a result of the recent codeshare agreement signed between Aegean and Etihad Airways - operates four flights per week. Etihad Airways offers double daily flights between Athens and Abu Dhabi in conjunction with its codeshare partner. Mike Sweet travelled to the UAE as a guest of Etihad Airways and Dusit International Abu Dhabi. i

A designated landmark building designed by Constantinos Doxiadis in the late ‘60s, finds new life as an uber-chic residential complex - One Athens. Housed in the site that served as the headquarters of Constantinos Doxiadis’ flourishing urban planning and architectural practice and home to Athens’ technological institute and first computer (!), One Athens is an ambitious project to convert a revolutionary, historic structure into a luxury condominium. The project marks the revival of an urban landmark that had fallen into disuse after Doxiadis’ death in 1975 and breathes new life into a slouch-

ing real estate market by offering a daringly different proposition. Grounded in Doxiadis’ philosophy to recreate a ‘human dimension’ in architecture, (an idea that was central to ancient Greek cities where Greeks designed a dynamic urban environment, not random, isolated objects) One Athens aspires to become a new kind of community in the city centre. Fringing the slopes of the verdant Lycabettus hill, One Athens is situated in the tony Kolonaki district, home to the city’s cognoscenti and to some of Athens’ most elegant apartment buildings. Developed by Cyclamino S.A. (a partnership between the Joannou family and Miltos Kambourides, the founder and Managing Partner of Dolphin Capital Partners (DCP), a leading global real estate investor and developer of beachfront leisure integrated resorts in Southeastern Europe and the Americas), this ambitious project, unique both in terms of the urban dialogue it initiates as well as the benchmarks it sets, sees the makeover of a 1960’s listed building into a contemporary residential complex, catering to exigent tastes and needs. The remodelling of the building by Divercity Architects focused on the preservation of the build-

ing’s distinctive architectural elements such as the building’s signature round, winding stairwell and atrium. The complex is shaped like a Greek P and comprises four buildings, with wide openings on both sides that allow natural light to filter in. The intent of the developers was to make sure that the conversion did not in any way take away from the building’s original function and architectural legacy. To that end, the colours are muted, the ceiling has a distinctly bare, industrial look while the use of innovative materials and textures such as Aliveri marble walls (also used for the pool), gliding translucent concrete panels and crystal lighting create an intelligent play with natural light and privacy. Wall-to-ceiling windows dominate the living area that offer views of the leafy Lycabettus hill as well as panoramic vistas of the sprawling city, the Acropolis and the Argo-Saronikos Sea just beyond. One Athens combines its state-of-the art equipment with smart management of all systems with easy-touse IPAD control. It is the first fully-serviced residential development in Greece offering premium services such as 24-hour concierge facilities and security, as well as a fully equipped gym, a spa area with its own swimming pool, a playroom for children, a club area for movie screenings and a fully equipped business suite that accommodates up to 14 people. Services also include bespoke finishes plus equipment for each apartment and bespoke furniture by Interni. One Athens residents also have access to the exclusive roof garden for personal use and for private receptions, as well as that much coveted facility in Kolonaki: ample parking space. “The clients of One Athens are architecture & design savvy people with an international background. Businessmen, managers or people who want to constantly feel the vibe of the Athens city center but at the same time are looking for a fully serviced luxury residential development at the Kolonaki area, next to the retail & business center, Sytagma square and Lycabettus Hill.” Whether a cosy 77m2 pied-a-terre or a sprawling penthouse of 721m2, the 26 individually designed residences are a visual treat, high on design and aesthetics, conceived to meet the demands of the most discerning globe-trotter.

t would be difficult to consider Athens today as a neo-classical city in the same way that Rome is identified with Baroque, Brussels with Art Nouveau and New York with Modernism. Nevertheless, there is something of an urban legend in modern Greece and in Europe’s history of ideas, which makes Athens one of the capitals of architectural classicism. For most Greeks, 19th century Athens is a paradise lost, redolent of symbolism and nostalgia. The neo-classicism that flourished in Athens from around 1830 to the early 20th century was a marvelous period of creativity, social cohesion and continuity. Some of the most renowned architects of this period were Friedrich von Gaertner and Leon von Klenze from Germany and Theophil and Christian Hansen from Denmark. Greek architects like Stamatis Kleanthis, Lyssandros Kaftanzoglou

Presidential Mansion

34 insider athens | September & October 2014

and Anastasios Metaxas also made their name during this period as did the German Ernst Ziller, originally from Dresden, who designed a plethora of private and public buildings in Athens. Neo-classicism also served as a cohesive mesh for the character of the New Athens, where the ruins of the old Ottoman face were being covered over to form a modern European capital. At least this was the intended outcome. Despite its inadequate infrastructure, in the years from 1850 to 1900, Athens could boast of some very impressive public buildings, all built in the grand yet austere, indisputably Greek, neo-classical style. If we were to go back in time and take a stroll around Athens on a spring morning in 1910 we would see these glorious public buildings arranged around the small historic center of the capital. There was the Zappeion Exhibi-

Zappeion

tion Hall with its Corinthian columns and colonnade of Caryatids, located across from the Panatheniac Stadium – site of the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896; the neoclassical churches of St. Irene and St. Constantine, the National Archaeological Museum and the Polytechnic University building. Perhaps the most notable buildings are the so-called Hansen trio – Athens University, the Academy and the National Library. Construction was uniform around the main avenues of the city and the facades of the building were decorated with never-ending variations on neo-classical motifs including gods and demigods, Caryatids, Hercules, Medusa, griffins, swans and cherubs. Familiar to all Athenians, the trademark ceramic roof ornaments that were used to adorn the eaves of buildings, were often shaped in a honey-suckle pattern (anthemia), just as in ancient times.

City Museum of Athens

Detail from Athens University building

Certain streets in Athens such as Stadiou, Amalias, Vassilissis Sofias and Patission, were veritable showcases of glorious, neo-classical, stately residences, many of which were set in gardens. Many of these were two-level residences, with a central, wrought-iron balcony and a variety of decorative features which struck a chord in every Greek. Classicism triumphed in every Athenian neighborhood. These houses also marked the beginnings of urbanization in Greece after the mid-19th century.

Nevertheless, Athens remains a city that is identified with European no-classicism. Today, many of these marvelous buildings may still be seen hidden amongst big, modern concrete constructions. An element of neo-classicism can also be seen in simpler constructions that reflect the values, aesthetic and moderation of a style that once meant so much to the Greek. Increased construction of buildings in the neoclassical style over the past few years has gone a long way to bolster the feeling that Athens is a city immersed in the neo-classical spirit of the 19th century. Just look at the Stathatos Mansion, today serving as a wing of the Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art, to see what a stately Athenian home once looked like. Walk down Panepistimiou and take some time to gaze at Ilion Melathron mansion, a neo-Renaissance concoction of the multi-talented and prolific Ernst Ziller. Other examples of neo-classical elegance are to be found around Athinas St (where the central markets are located) and its side streets; many of the local fishmongers and

dairy shops are housed in beautiful but faded buildings redolent of another era. Walk around Plaka to get a small taste of what an old Athenian neighborhood pedestrianized Dionysiou Aeropagitou promenade at the foot of the Acropolis. The neo-classical buildings along this street look onto the archetypal symbol of classicism, the Acropolis, and atmosphere this synergy produces can be quite mystical, especially at night. The modern city of Athens was created in the 19th century as a modern link with the past, and chose an innovative architectural style which is applied with the enthusiasm and exalted to the point of decadence. Here and only here, can one find the Athenian neo-classical home, as Greek as the post of basil that adorns its balcony. While grand public buildings can be seen in Vienna, Munich and St. Petersburg, simple middle-class homes built in the neo-classical style can only be seen in Athens. There are still enough of them around and they stand out for their size, the prudent arrangement of their facades and their elegance. These buildings symbolize just how deep neo-classicism runs in the Greek capital. i

Art-deco buildings in Kypseli

In contrast to the metropolitan centers of the West, where neo-classicism was normally reserved for public buildings, classicism in Athens permeated everywhere, infiltrating even the poorest neighborhoods – such was its emotional power. Even though Modernism was very popular in Athens in later years, beginning with the Bauhaus architecture of the 1930s to mass reconstruction after the Second World War, the neo-classic core of Athens survives to this very day, albeit it in a much reduced and damaged form. Private residences and mansions were torn down en masse between 1950-1975 and this, combined with the rapid urbanization of Athens,

has contributed to the erosion of the city’s neo-classical identity.

Samantha Stokes catches up with legendary wine-maker Vangelis Gerovassiliou who has single-handedly put Epanomi on the world wine map.

V

angelis Gerovassiliou is a man very much from Epanomi. He may have studied oenology in Bordeaux, made world famous wines at Porto Carras and opened a winery in South Africa, but his roots go down with the family vineyard in Epanomi. Born and raised in this Macedonian town to farming parents, Gerovassiliou has 56 hectares of thriving vineyards to call his own. Like the indigenous grape variety he rediscovered and saved from extinction, (namely Malagousia, a beautifully fruity white showing apricot, pear and mango) Gerovassiliou is a man of the earth and thrives at home. He wants nothing else but to grow supreme fruit to the best of the land’s ability and create top quality. So what is it about Epanomi? Not to rain on his parade, and certainly don’t tell him this, but you could be forgiven for not yet visiting this town southeast of Thessaloniki with 8,000 citizens. Despite being slap bang opposite Mount Olympus with 40km of sandy beaches, shal-

This local man and his family-run winery have won too many awards to mention [see box]. But we dare not call for a drum roll and spot light, as the stage would probably remain bare. Vangelis Gerovassiliou would run a mile from all that fuss and funfare – plus he’d have mud all over his hands anyway. He is a shy man, not a show man. I already mentioned his vinous child, “Malagousia”, but he is also enthusiastic about “Limnio”, a red grape variety from Limnos, mentioned by Aristotle. Ancient clones make his eyes sparkle – infact he is rather a historian, and a love of vini- and viticulture have lead to his collection of artefacts and curiosities, including a corkscrew collection with 2,600 openers, all collected by Gerovassiliou himself. Over the years, he and his wife Sonia-Tziola-Gerovassiliou, his chemist-oenologist Thrasyvoulos Giantsidis and his close knit team of staff, have created an oasis in Macedonia to rival any top winery. The grounds are meticulous: trimmed hedges, perfect edges, lawns you could play boules on – it couldn’t be neater and more beautiful if it was Photoshopped. And this first impression carries through to every section of vine growing and wine making. The grapes that make his wines are strictly all his own and are hand picked. You don’t get to be, easily, one of Greece’s top wine estates for nothing. Gerovassiliou is a name synonymous with quality. So what does the future hold? Gerovassiliou sees success for Epanomi (naturally), as tourists’ habits change and we see more of what he calls “specialist tourism”, such as “wine tourism”. And he should know, because 10,000 people passed through his winery doors last year alone. An incredible figure.

low, calm sea and a history stretching back to the Neolithic period, Epanomi might not quite compete with Halkidiki for beauty - though it is much closer, just 25km from Thessaloniki’s city centre. Yet Epanomi trumps other areas of Macedonia with one thing: its terroir. This French wine word refers to the geography, geology and climate of a place and the way a grape can express this in the wine. Gerovassiliou is hugely passionate about the terroir of Epanomi and is responsible for putting it on the international wine map from as far afield as Brazil and China to the USA and Japan. Thanks to him, the words “Epanomi Protected Geographical Indication” are known to sommeliers the world over.

Wine Museum Gerovasiliou

His impeccable vineyards soak up the Grecian sun on the gentle Epanomi slopes, basking in Mount Olympus’ gaze, enjoying the sea breeze and the good soil. I ask about the micro-climate. “It is a very good place,” says Gerovassiliou with a simple smile. He tells me proudly that French travellers of the 16th century visited Epanomi and noted the fertile soil, calling it and the surrounding villages “Kalimeria”, meaning “good places” for agriculture.

To name a few of the awards Domaine Gerovassiliou has won in the past year, you will need to take a deep breath: the European Business Awards named it Greece’s National Champion for a company that excels in delivering innovation twinned with successful commercial results whilst acting responsibly and positively affecting the social environment it operates in; American magazine, Wine & Spirits, rated four of his wines “exceptional”; Decanter World Wine Awards awarded the estate no less than ten medals; Robert Parker, the most famous wine critic in the world, has awarded Gerovassiliou wines 90+ points; the Thessaloniki International Wine Competition gave it four gold medals, two silvers and a special distinction.

He repays his home town with education, culture and recognition. A third of his visitors are students of all ages. His winery regularly holds free lectures, with recent speakers including Stelios Ramfos and Kostas Tsoclis. His garden showcases a Costas Varotsos scultpure and his new reception building is designed by Prof Tzonos. He premieres films here (for free) and his doors are regularly open, from International Museum Day (May 18th) to the Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard’s open day. He has published a wonderful children’s book about a hare, to teach young kids the annual wine making calendar, and is currently publishing the third in a series of small books about Epanomi. The first is about local gastronomy, the second about viticulture in Epanomi, and the latest one will be about Tsipouro. Does he have a life outside Epanomi? He does. He partners a winery near Kavala with Vasilios Tsaktsalis (previously wine maker at Costas Lazaridis) called Biblia Chora – resurrecting the historic name for the area – producing award-winning organic wine and exploiting a microclimate that mimics the Napa Valley’s (sea breeze, the influence of the Pangeo mountain valley and flinty soil).

Guests certainly do not go home disappointed. Not only can they explore the interactive museum and fascinating corkscrew collection – mainly from 18th century Britain and France – but they can pick up food and wine matching tips and watch a bit of cinema at the end, to better understand the importance of wine in society. This is very Gerovassiliou. They do not just make and sell wine here. It is not just a product; it is a culture.

38 insider athens | September & October 2014

More recently he became a flying winemaker, with a winery in South Africa’s Stellenbosch, called Escapades Winery. But no matter where his interest in growing and vinifying grapes takes him, he always comes back to Epanomi. Sonia and he have three children: two daughters and a son who is following his father’s footsteps by studying oenology in Bordeaux. And who knows where Gerovasilliou Junior’s nose will take him, but there’s one thing for sure, he’ll know where to find his father: after all, home is where the heart is. i

Santorini Unveiled Tired of the same-old uni-dimensional images of blue domes and white-washed walls? Here is a photographer who offers a refreshing departure from hackneyed brochure images and dares to introduce us to a completely different perspective of an oft-photographed island, Santorini. Petros Koublis, whose photographs were on display at The Vedema Hotel over the summer, draws out the poetry from the volcanic island’s mesmerizing landscapes: of flowery meadows and pockmarked rocks, of wild horses galloping away and of lush vineyards that yield Santorini’s exquisite whites. Of a Santorini so distinct from anything you have known before, that it might prompt you to re-discover the island on your terms. Koublis believes that ‘to touch beauty, there has to be honesty’ and that comes through amply through these painterly images. Soak in the magic.

Wine Bar

Nestled in a quiet leafy street just off Syntagma, Kiki de Grèce is a cosy wine bistrot with Greek wines and nibbles. Named after the indomitable Kiki de Montparnasse who was an artist, muse, nightclub singer, actress and painter, Kiki de Grèce hopes to capture the glamour and insouciance of 1920s Paris. She was the embodiment of the outspokenness, audacity, and creativity that marked that period in Montparnasse. Kiki maintained her inventive attitude even in difficult times saying «all I need is an onion, a bit of bread, and a bottle of wine.” At Kiki de Grèce, we recommend that you try Greek wines by the glass, both from established and emerging producers and regions. Kiki’s autumn list showcases wines from Crete; well-known and also rare wines from indigenous varieties of the island. Nibble on regional culinary specialities such as home-made tarts, grilled bruschetta with local cheese and charcuterie, salads, varieties of Greek cheese and honey and seasonal desserts. A great stop to unwind with friends and colleagues after a long work day. Kiki de Grece offers a little indulgence at very affordable prices - starting from 3 euros for a glass of wine and 2,5 euros for a small bite. Every Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm, Kiki de Grèce hosts an aperitivo buffet. Order a glass of the featured wine and enjoy the complimentary apertivo buffet. Each week features a new wine. i

Gastronomy

Walking into Chefi’s, one is struck by the exquisite taste the restaurant exudes.

H

oused in an old Halandri residence in a quiet, leafy street, Chefi’s is a beautifully restored restaurant done up in shades of grey with pops of bright orange that opens onto a verdant courtyard. When Efi Cotsapa decided to give up her day job and pursue her passion for cooking and set up Chefi’s, little did she realise that it would end up being the best decision of her life. Chefi’s is clearly a personal project and that comes through in the keen attention to detail. From the carefully chosen tableware to the fresh flowers, Efi’s commitment to her restaurant shines through. The cuisine also reflects Efi’s passion for food and travel. Chef Alexandros Kossivakis experiments with eclectic flavours from Italian, Asian and South-American cuisines that blend seamlessly to conceive dishes that are at once, surprising and creative. The plating is sublime and the service, personable and friendly. i Chefi’s, Perikleous 31, Halandri. Tel: 210 681 5774

Nice n Easy has long been the goto place for the health-conscious. It now extends its lunch and dinner menu to include a hearty breakfast and offers a special Sunday brunch for languorous weekends.

50 insider athens | September & October 2014

Gastronomy

D

imitris Christoforidis was a pioneer in introducing the concept of refined healthy eating to Athenians when he launched Nice n Easy, six years ago. With a partner who shares his passion and philosophy for organic eating, Christoforidis and Chef Christos Athanasiadis have gone on to replicate the success and following they have enjoyed at their two restaurants in Athens and Kifissa with the opening of a sprawling 300-seat restaurant right on the beach at Kalo Livadi in Mykonos. Christoforidis’ tryst with the restaurant business dates back a couple of decades when A-list celebrities would queue up to dine at his LA restaurant, Sanctuary. The legendary Frank Sinatra, after whose 1960 Grammy-winning album, the restaurants are named, was a regular. That possibly explains Christoforidis’ obsession with Hollywood – as all three Nice n Easy restaurants have themed settings where large black and white cut-outs of suave actors from the 50’s with slicked back, Brylcreemed hair vie for wall-space with Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth’s seductive frames. Nice n Easy has a menu that goes far beyond your typical Mediterranean fare,» says Christoforidis, “We work hard to create adventurous dishes that tickle your senses but are rooted in local gastronomic traditions and indigineous produce.”

The key to Nice n Easy’s success has been a menu rich in imagination, flavour and aroma, with all the produce sourced locally. The meat products served at the restaurant are brought in from Nice n Easy’s own buffalo farm located in Kerkini Lake, Greece. “Indeed, the menu here is anything but typical in composition and name. With a star-studded choice of Oscar-winning actors and directors, Insider’s recommendations include: The Sean Connery - freshly baked wild salmon with a herb and citrus crust on a quinoa tabbouleh base - the pale, luxurious fillet off-setting the crunchiness and bite of the quinoa. Ideal for those inclined to keep it light. Insider also recommends the resplendant Costas Gavras Special - fresh mixed greens with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, sunflower seeds, in a mavrodaphne sweet wine dressing and the Mastrogianni gluten-free fusilli with rocket, pine nuts, pecorino and cherry tomatoes. The dessert menu flirts with flavours and surprises with an astute melange of textures. Insider’s favourites: Fluffy lemon mousse topped with mastic yogurt sprinkles and the uber-delicate and refreshingly sophisticated lemongrass sorbet. i Nice n Easy Athens Omirou 60 & Skoufa, Athens, 210 3617201 niceneasy.gr
