o complement the new season's promise of new growth, beauty and renewal, we have designed this issue to reflect the promise of things to come. Spring brings the warmth and beautiful flowers and gardens abloom. Summer with its fabulous heat, lots of swimming, picnics, outdoor dining and fun! We have chosen all the elements that showcase our beautiful Queensland lifestyle; with our beautiful balmy days and nights heralding the hotter days to come, we are eager to be sunning ourselves by the pool or under an umbrella on the beach. It is time to search for the perfect bathing suit, and also the perfect time to be choosing your new season look for the coming party and racing season. With Melbourne Cup, pre-Christmas parties, New Year's Eve balls and all those dining invitations for luncheons overlooking the bright blue ocean, and dinners under a starlit night sky, now is the time to be visiting your favourite boutique to check out the latest styles. This issue is full of beautiful, new season fashion, exceptional jewellery and accessories, prestige properties, interesting people, designer interiors and products, health, fitness and beauty, fine food, restaurants, recipes and wine selections, as well as superb motoring. We have also included some great renovating tips for those who have chosen to update, revamp and redesign, rather than make a move to a new property - just yet. We've also included some stunning furniture pieces and colour ideas, as well as expert advise. This issue we introduce you to talented, young Gold Coast violinist, Alexandra Heussner; we also talk with Queensland school Principal, Annette Duffy about her humanitarian trek to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and bring you a heart-warming story about assistance dogs, and one of the young people they are groomed to help. Check out our stylish getaways, latest books, movies, DVDs and theatre guide as well, for the perfect way to spend your leisure hours. We've designed our Platinum issue to give you just the right choices for your Christmas wish list this year. Don't forget to add the latest chef's cookbook - we all want to be a master chef in our own kitchen.

Vanity flair.. WHEN LITTLE ALISON SHAW FOUND OUT IT WAS DOLLARS NOT GUM LEAVES THAT MADE THE WORLD GO AROUND, HER ROAD TO ENTREPRENEURIALISM WAS SEALED. rowing up on Sydney’s North Shore, hanging out at the beach all summer, hiding in the bush, playing cricket in the front yard and dabbling in retail were very much the norm for most kids in the 70s. But when the boys decided to get tough and destroy Alison Shaw’s stock of sticks, stones and bottle tops in her play-shop, it was time to call it quits. Lesson one: Deal in dollars not gum leaves. A degree in economics seemed the natural path, although managing restaurants and hotels was far more rewarding and giving birth to son Jack proved to be the most defining moment in her life. Even today everything revolves around him...almost. When Jack was one, Alison won a trip to the Gold Coast. “On the spur of the moment I hired a car and travelled to Mt Tamborine,” recalls Alison who in the same day decided to move and rent a house there. Six weeks later it was goodbye Sydney and she never looked back. “How could I ignore the opportunity to live in paradise? Queensland is God’s own country and I have had opportunities here that you could only dream of. I am the luckiest woman in the world.” At famed Sydney restaurants such as Bilsons and Rockpool, she also discovered a love for good wine and after a few attempts to get into the industry she talked her way into a casual position at the newly opened Canungra Valley Vineyards. It snowballed into working cellar door, managing the vineyard, marketing, building a website and eventually she started her first business Smart Wine, doing marketing and public relations for various wineries and regions such as Gold Coast Wine Country. She also juggled life as a single mum, but says there were advantages: “I could take control of my time, didn’t have to ask for a day off to see my son at a sport’s carnival and take full advantage of the financial rewards. Women board directors were rare, so I figured if I wanted to work at that level, the company had to be

mine. “All mums juggle, single mums just juggle in a different way. Sometimes I start work at 4am and finish at 3pm so I can do the things I want. And Ripple Massage was a natural progression. “I loved the wine industry but I wanted complete control from the product concept stage to the research, development and marketing,” the sometime control freak admits, adding her 15 year-old son also has amazing out-there ideas. “I went to China, looked at importing pearls and all sorts of things, but on my computer was a small marketing plan I’d completed for a massage therapist mate in Victoria. The penny dropped. As the Paul Simon song says ‘there are diamonds on the soles of your feet’. How true.” Ripple Massage started four years ago with Alison working solo as a fully-trained therapist, until she realised there was a gap in the market for a professional service of the day spa going to the client. “Most mobile massage companies only offer one hour Swedish massages, but I wanted to offer unique massages such as chocolate, seashell, Russian and Vietnamese four hands, gained from travelling overseas and bringing back styles of massage you won’t see anywhere else in Australia. Yes, I love my work and no, you can’t have my job. “I also wanted the convenience factor. I know how hard it is to get to the day spa, relax, enjoy your treatment, only to have all the peace wiped out on the drive home. Our guests get to relax afterwards.” The Ripple effect has literally taken off, in fact Alison says “it’s gone berserk. The five year goal was for a few therapists in Mt Tamborine, Gold Coast and Brisbane. That was accomplished in three months. Today there are 40 therapists. It’s also available from the Sunshine Coast to the Tweed, Byron Bay and Lismore. This year Melbourne, Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula were added, Australia-wide is planned within the year and then it’s New Zealand. “A call centre has been opened on the Gold Coast, HR and sale’s team members are on the up and with the rapid expansion, we’re also on the look-out for good therapists.” The most popular treatments include the frangipani package for hen’s parties and girl’s weekends and let’s not forget there’s buffing and pampering for blokes. Ripple is known for it’s very affordable packages with lots of extras such as lime and tangerine exfoliations, organic clay masks and product gifts. “Products including soaps are handmade by us at Mt Tamborine using the very best raw materials thus ensuring a sensational result without the high costs of packaging and marketing, associated with well known brands. For example the organic green clay face mask is 100 per cent natural and has no synthetic preservatives. Also because it is made to our formulae

we know that it will suit even the most sensitive skin. Many products are gleaned from overseas, such as a lime and tangerine exfoliation from an amazing day spa in Seoul called Mud where the highlight was sitting starkers in a drying room, covered head to toe in clay, watching Korean soap operas with six very petite Korean ladies. The yummy scrub with lots of citrus essential oil, ground walnut shell and cream almost made me slide off the table in bliss. I have never felt so clean, and my skin has never felt so smooth. The traditional Korean bath house turned out to be the most magical day spa experience of my life. “There’s also a collagen face mask that I found in Vietnam’s Hanoi. After a long day sight seeing, I booked myself into a little day spa. I really just wanted a massage, but the words anti ageing facial caught my attention I was impressed. but what really sold me was when I got back to the hotel, my boyfriend, who probably wouldn't notice if I dyed my blonde hair black, said the magic words ‘what have you done to your skin, it looks great. After picking myself up off the floor I decided I had to replicate the idea for Ripple." There are many needy women in the world so Alison has chosen to give part of her profits to charities such as Mahboba at the peak of that Everest. “Mahbobas Promise made me realise just how ridiculously lucky I am as a woman in Australia and how stupidly abundant life is. “I am 43 and yes the 40s are the best years, although I’ve heard the 50s are even better.

When I turned 39 I really wanted to be 40 as I felt it was going to be a great decade. It hasn’t let me down. ‘We live on Mt Tamborine, five minutes from a rainforest where I walk most mornings, have a son I love and boyfriend Dean who adores me. We love going to nice restaurants or just taking the dogs for a run. “I’m surrounded by people with positive energy and every morning before starting work, I look at the ocean and sigh. Life doesn’t get any better.”

Epitome of elegance BORDEAUX-BORN COUNTESS FRANCOISE ESTERHAZY DREAMT ABOUT BECOMING A FASHION DESIGNER BUT HER PARENTS HAD OTHER IDEAS. rancoise Esterhazy was a pretty-in-pink five year-old, had a passion for textiles and design as a teenager but her parents suggested she get a “real job” so she opted for the absolute extreme – structural engineering. “I wanted to do fashion, but it was the 60s and to my father it was not a serious job,” says Francoise who graduated from university, travelled to Nepal; worked at the French Embassy in Kathmandu tutoring Nepalese engineers who were going to France for post graduate studies; developed her photography skills by trekking and taking shots of tribes in their beautiful costumes; plus collecting antique jewellery and fabrics along the way. She met her husband Count Janos (John) Esterhazy of Hungary who worked in hotel management for Oberoi, had two daughters Livia and Ildiko and eventually moved to Australia, giving up the gypsy lifestyle. This proved to be the catalyst for her fashion career. “We arrived in 1981 - time to change my career,” she recalls. “I always loved fashion, but it was my stay in India and the costumes collected from various other countries that inspired me.” The genesis was knitwear - a beige and gold jacket with lavish embroidery, which brought so many compliments it didn’t take long before Francoise Esterhazy Design, with the distinctive moniker of elegant individualism, was borne. Jewelled jackets were her first foray into evening wear in 1988 and remain a favourite today. “In 1995 I added a daywear collection in cotton voile, linen, silk and block printing on linen and also designed shawls in wool, cashmere and silk plus jewellery in semi precious stones and silver. “At the factory which I’ve used since 1983, I have a fantastic relationship with the ‘master beader’ and the ‘master embroiderer who work by hand on mostly silk for evening wear. The knitwear collection is 100 per cent cashmere with cashmere and silk -printed top.” The latest summer collection is very colourful and the epitome of elegant casual: “Bright royal blue and lime green butterfly-printed voile; a series of ponchos in printed voile with stripes of sequences; easy to wear for evening; casual with jeans. The cotton voile story is earthy colours of cream/brown, ivory/navy or simple white and stretch satin is in orange/green/black print with an animal print in camel/brown/ivory.” With daughters and their families living overseas, travels to India several times a year including staying in a desert town in Rajasthan, visits to their ‘other’ home in Biarritz in France, a showing annually of the summer collection in the south of France at St Jean Cap Ferrat, plus regular trips interstate for new season showings, Francoise and Janos decided on a sea-change from Sydney to the Gold Coast. “I love the lifestyle and weather and it doesn’t matter where we live when it comes to business,” says Francoise who has won a Concours d’Elegance Supreme Award and opened her art and couture boutique at Clear Island Waters. Other stockists include Allegra and ARI’B at Main Beach, Toscana in Park Road Brisbane and Elisabeth Shepherd in Cairns.

Label: Maiocchi Design: The Hearts Desire dress, worn with Button Bolero, from the A Charmed Life collection

“This is one of my top ten picks for looks this season. The fitted jacket is key this season and also into next year. It looks great in a relaxed mode with these slinky harem pants but also perfect when teamed with a tunic or pencil skirt. Also add some animal print with shoes or a belt.” … Lisa Ho

THE CLASSIC Label: Paul Hunt Design: French Chantilly lace frock with embossed bodice, and chalk blue sash. “This is the sort of dress that transcends quite easily from cocktail frock to the races, to wearing to someone else's wedding. I was trying to use a mixture of fabrics and it has a strong floral feel – the whole collection was about revisiting the 1950s with that full skirt and nipped in bodice, and it has a very Doris Day-Grace Kelly feel to it.” … Paul Hunt

“The whole collection is about childhood dress-ups and bright Lego colours with our usual Japanese theme we always run with. This is one of our most flattering dresses and we’ve been running this style for years now but just bringing it out in new prints – the fabric binding down the front draws the eyes down and it’s great for most shapes and sizes. You could wear this dress shopping or to a wedding with the bolero, depending on the accessories you choose.” … Deanne Mayocchi

PERFORMING WITH MICHAEL BUBLE WOULD BE A DREAM-COME-TRUE FOR YOUNG VIOLINIST ALEXANDRA HEUSSNER. teering children in a direction against their will is a common occurrence as Alexandra Heussner attests. Despite playing the piano with its mostly monotonistic qualities since the age of five, she admits preference for the creative sounds of the violin and the freedom it gives the player. “My parents, [Catherine and Jean-Marc Heussner] who appreciate all types of music, were delighted I’d set goals early in life and did all they could to help,” recalls Alexandra, who studied both instruments in parallel and found out when she was about 10 that she had violin in her blood. Her great grandfather Julien Falk was a violinist, had an association with the Paris Conservatoire, wrote an introduction to a book on music and was a violinist for screenings of silent movies. “My violin is the one played by my great-grandfather. It was made in France about 1750. “My first solo violin performance was at the Pacific Pines Performing Arts Centre when I was about 12, I played Weeping Willow and it was very nerve-racking,” Alexandra, who lives Gavan Heights and currently attends Saint Stephen’s College, where she studies English, mathematics B, ancient history, drama, music and music extension. There have been a string of awards and myriad performances from solo to orchestras, however playing violin in the 21-member Team Australia in the classical and open styles for the 13th Annual World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, ranks as the most memorable

S

“Representing my country was an experience I will never forget. It was amazing and I can’t wait to go back to the States,” enthuses Alexandra, who was the recipient of a gold and a silver medal and is inspired by violinists Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell and Vanessa Mae. Her favourite composers are Brahms, Debussy and Vivaldi. “Another memorable performance was recently when I played with Maske Electric Trio at Twin Towns in Tweed Heads. It was so much fun. I had a blast.” Other performances include appearing regularly with Daniel Mallari and Popera Classics Collection, a fusion of pop and opera with a modern edge at Saks, plus Opera in the Park at Broadbeach, several charity concerts, and fundraisers for disaster ravaged countries. “When I leave school, my plan is to do a Bachelor of Music, focusing on performance at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in South Bank, further my studies overseas, work in orchestras and hope a few solo performances come my way plus I’d like to compose. “My ultimate ambition is to be recognized as a violinist, I haven’t chosen a definite style yet, because as much as I love classical music, I would also love to

Electric in RED...

MY ULTIMATE AMBITION IS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A VIOLINIST, I HAVEN’T CHOSEN A DEFINITE STYLE YET, BECAUSE AS MUCH AS I LOVE CLASSICAL MUSIC, I WOULD ALSO LOVE TO BE A SOLO VIOLINIST FOR SINGERS OR PERFORMERS SUCH AS JOSH GROBAN…

be a solo violinist for singers or performers such as Josh Groban and Michael Bublé, in a similar vein to what I am doing with Daniel Mallari.” Alexandra also appreciates other genres of music:“I’m a fan of Delta Goodrem who writes beautiful music and I’m developing a fascination for Kate Miller-Heidke’s beautiful music. I love Michael Bublé, as well as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Yellowcard, Coldplay, and A Change of Pace.”

In her rare spare time the very pretty teen catches up with friends, relaxes with good book, enjoys a movie and although fashion is not high on the agenda, she does have an extreme obsession for shoes, especially heels.

coming season is all about bright colours and smouldering eyes. Expect extended eyeliner eyes so smoky they should carry a surgeon’s general warning and eye shadow, cheek and even lip colours that look like shavings of gold bullion. So I would have to say that it is out with your pastel colours and anything shimmery. Our new Divine Marchesa Eye shadow quad will help you achieve the perfect smoky eye for this season.

Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane? It was a great event to be part of so I really did enjoy every minute. A highlight would have to be meeting the Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and her mentioning that she has bought some of my products over the years … it was a great honour for me and reminded me that my products and my brand speaks to women of all ages, backgrounds, interests and careers.

5. We know you love flawless skin, so how can we achieve that without it costing us a fortune? To achieve a flawless, natural base it’s essential to use a primer to hydrate and even out your complexion. This will allow your foundation to blend perfectly into your skin and will make your make-up last longer without having to reapply more product. Try my Auto Pilot Pre Foundation Primer.

2. What is your favourite piece of clothing you are wearing from your wardrobe at the moment? My new Dolce and Gabbana pants - they are a black, soft velvet and have this todie-for detailing around the waste with big black jewels. 3. Do you ever give your daughters any style tips? Well, my four daughters are growing up to be little fashionistas, let me tell you. They all have a distinctive style and it's really entertaining watching them be creative with what they wear and seeing their own personalities come through. They will usually get themselves dressed and then they will come to me saying “Papa, Papa … do you like my outfit?” It's all about having fun and letting them feel free to make choices that empower them. They all have their own wardrobes and shoe collections too!

4. What was a highlight for you at this year's Mercedes

6. What is the most stylish piece of furniture in your home? My house is all

about mixing up eclectic tastes and various styles. I like creating order out of chaos and I wanted an oasis that was a reflection of me, something with a sense of fun and excitement but with an emotional connection. My favourite piece of furniture at the moment would be a set of Perspex chairs that were previously owned by cosmetics icon, Helena Rubinstein.

7. Who’s been on your hot list of Hollywood clients lately? I recently hosted Sarah Michelle Geller’s baby shower which was lots of fun. We treated Sarah and her guests, including Shannon Doherty and Michelle Trachtenberg, to make-overs and gifts and just created a fun environment for them to ‘play’ in.

8. What will be a popular look for lips this spring/summer? Expect super-bright lipstick hues like berry, vermilion, neon pink and tangy coral - as we just saw on the catwalk at MBFF.

From Hair tothere.. WHAT WOULD A FASHION FESTIVAL BE WITHOUT THE LATEST TANTALISING TECHNIQUES IN HAIR ARTISTRY? The Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane late-August exemplified looks both striking and symbolic in the backstage beauty stakes. Models walked tall with a variety of temptress-like cascading curls, biggerthan-Ben-Hur beehives and the sleekest of sophisticated ponies pull back to perfection. While much hype was centred on the fashion, there was no denying the hair helped take the production to the next level of aesthetic appeal. “We train each dog to the individual handler’s needs,” said Craig. “There are basic tasks that are taught to each assistance dog, but every handler will have different physical needs so there will be different individual tasks required for every handler.” Teaching a dog new tricks is no piece of cake, hence Craig has become a qualified assistance dog trainer after attending a course in the US on Assistance, Service and Therapy Dogs. It's also a sizeable financial commitment to train one dog to readiness, costing between $20,000 to $50,000, not to mention ongoing maintenance training “We currently use funds from our commercial dog training business to fund our Assistance Dog program,” says Tracey.“We also rely on donations from businesses and the public to assist us with our program - every bit of help and assistance is greatly appreciated.” “Without our key supporters to help us with our endeavours in training and supplying these dogs to their disabled partners, it would be impossible or extremely difficult to achieve,” says Tracey. The Murray's' passion for their four-legged friends has spurred the couple on a journey of learning throughout the past 20 years. “We started out with a deep love and devotion to dogs and our passion and hobby quickly became a career,” explains Tracey. On a mission to provide the best possible knowledge and education to his clients, Craig undertook US courses in Professional Dog Training, Police and Narcotic Dog training, Man Trailing Bloodhounds, Search and Rescue and Cadaver Recovery dogs and Assistance and Therapy Dogs and training. While Tracey has carved her own niche in the canine circuit, spending time at a wolf research facility in the US to research the similarities and differences between the wolf and the domestic dog. With such a comprehensive understanding of dogs, the Murrays have lectured at the University of Queensland's Veterinary Science School for 13 years, been special educators for Japanese dog training students for one of the largest Asian college groups, and have been called upon as expert witnesses for court cases. “We have been contracted by governments and large corporations to develop world-first technology for sniffer dogs and have worked as specialist search dog handlers for five state police services,” says Craig. Their resume not only boasts training police officers and dogs overseas, but also winning an International Award for Dog Training Excellence in Law Enforcement, and winning a Volunteer of the Year Award for their services to the Queensland Ambulance Disaster Dog Team development. But it's seeing the difference dogs like Harry can make, which reminds the duo why all the hard work is worthwhile. The couple does check the pounds for dogs with a suitable outlook, as well as breed golden retrievers and labradors with the hope of picking suitable pups from the litters for training. Then it's anything from four to eight months spent preparing the dog for its new best friend. Craig says the Queensland Government is backing their program by allowing assistance dogs public access under the Disability Discrimination Act, and is currently working towards having a separate Act to cover Assistance Dogs. The overt reference to the Bulgari tradition that lies at the heart of the new Serpenti collection, testifies to the brand’s respect for its own heritage and the inspiration it has always drawn from mythology and history. The serpent is a creature whose unique characteristics have long fascinated the human imagination, and figures prominently in the myths and folkloric traditions of virtually every culture in the world. It is present in numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Aztecs and the Egyptians, who believed that the snake’s continuous shedding of its skin was a symbol of fertility, regeneration, resurrection and immortality. In Egyptian mythology specifically, the goddess of maternity and fertility, Isis, has a particularly strong connection to the image of the snake. Indeed, legend has it that the goddess acquired the power to heal through the help of a serpent. The animal also played an important role in Greek mythology as an emblem of life, and its image was used to represent healing, death and rebirth. The connection between the snake and immortality derives from symbolic systems that associated the creature with the earth and the waters that flowed from it, and thus it came to represent the generative forces harbored by the earth and the underworld. Over the centuries, the symbol of the snake is encountered not only in myths and legends of ancient civilizations, but in the works of numerous authors, poets and artists of epochs closer to our own, further evidence that the archetype of the serpent Serpenti bracelet Pink gold triple coil has always been considered extremely with alternating powerful. lavender jade and pavé set diamond Bulgari now offer beautiful pieces that will endure forever. scales (10cts) POA

Culture is not a dirty word, nor is etiquette and many households do uphold the tradition of family dining at the table peppered with lively conversation. fresh as.. . Talking Turkey WHO SAID TURKEY IS JUST FOR CHRISTMAS? EUROPEANS AND AMERICANS ARE YEAR-ROUND CONSUMERS AND THE TREND IS CATCHING ON IN AUSTRALIA. he turkey originated in the United State, Mexico and Central America and is the key to every Thanksgiving dinner. In Australia when we think of turkey, we associate it with Christmas – not what today’s growers want to hear. From turkey production that was dominated by two major players who controlled the industry from developing the preferred hybrids to processing the birds, the demand today has increased for freerange, hormone-free, organically-raised birds and various fresh cuts such as Inghams’ drumsticks, breast steaks, tenderloins, Italian sausages and wings which are available all year round. Innovative recipe ideas also add to its appeal. How about fresh turkey drumsticks grilled with a lemon and garlic marinade; turkey breast steaks in a light fattoush salad; Italian turkey sausages served with Italian style cannellini beans; or marinated turkey tenderloins accompanied by an Asian salad. Turkey also goes with almonds, hazelnuts, chestnuts, red currant jelly, apple jelly, prosciutto, bacon, sweet potato, tarragon, sage, verjuice, mushrooms and of course cranberries. Turkey can be handled, cooked and stored in the same way as chicken, whether you roast or grill. As well as being delicious, turkey is also one of the leanest sources of protein on the planet. It’s low in saturated fat, a good source of niacin, plus vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, which are vital for energy production and lowering the risk of heart attack. Turkey is also rich in zinc, a remarkable nutrient that is critical for a healthy immune system.

T

Asian-flavoured marinated turkey tenderloins Ingredients: 4 fresh turkey tenderloins 1⁄3 cup soy sauce

2 tbs hoi-sin sauce 2 tbs peanut oil 2 tbs brown sugar 2 tbs sesame oil 3cm piece of ginger, peeled, grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice powder Asian-style salad 1⁄2 wombok (Chinese cabbage), trimmed, finely shredded 3 green onions, finely sliced 1 large carrot, peeled, grated 2 celery sticks, finely sliced 1 tbs sesame seeds, toasted 100g packet crunchy noodles

Cook tenderloins for 4-5 minutes each side or until cooked through. Place saucepan with marinade over a medium heat. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. Add crunchy noodles to salad and toss until well combined. Spoon salad onto serving plates. Top with turkey tenderloins and spoon marinade sauce over tenderloins. Serves 4.

Method: Combine soy, hoisin, peanut oil, brown sugar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic and Chinese five spice powder in a large ceramic dish. Add turkey tenderloins and turn to coat well with marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour, if time permits. Combine Chinese cabbage, green onions, carrot, celery and sesame seeds in a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate. Preheat a barbecue hotplate on medium heat. Remove turkey tenderloins from marinade, reserving marinade. Pour marinade into a small saucepan.

THE DEMAND TODAY HAS INCREASED FOR FREE-RANGE, HORMONE-FREE, ORGANICALLY-RAISED BIRDS AND VARIOUS FRESH CUTS

Everybody’s nuts Ten gongs for a Byron Bay based gourmet food producer confirm that macadamias are on the tip of everyone’s taste buds. Brookfarm was awarded ten medals at the recent Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, including Gold for its oven roasted macadamia nuts with Australian spices. And profits from the Walkabout range of exotic fruit and nuts mixes, which won a host of silver medals, will assist the Australian-based Rainforest Rescue project in its aims to protect the Daintree Rainforest in North Queensland. Pam and Martin Brook’s range of high quality macadamia-based products was first sold at the Bangalow Markets in November 2000. Today fame has spread and the products are distributed throughout the world from national and international airlines and hotels to independent supermarkets and department stores, plus in somewhat of a coup, they’re on the shelves of the iconic New York department store Macy’s. “We’re thrilled to win these medals,” says a chuffed Martin Brook. “Over the years we have been fortunate to receive many awards for our macadamia muesli and now it’s great that our new Walkabout fruit and nut range has also been recognized. It’s a reflection of our hard working team, who like us share a passion for quality.”

Gold medal shiraz JIMBOUR WINES, WITH VINEYARDS BASED AT HISTORIC JIMBOUR STATION OUTSIDE DALBY, CONTINUES TO CLIMB THE LADDER OF SUCCESS. Major achievements for the Ludwig Leichhardt Reserve Shiraz 2007 are a gold medal at the recent San Francisco International Wine Competition, a silver medal at the Queensland Wine Awards late last year and a three-star rating in the prestigious Winestate Magazine’s World’s Greatest Shiraz Challenge for 2009. “It’s a very significant result for the company, the Darling Downs region and our State,” says Jimbour Director David Russell, adding credit was due to Master of Wine, Peter Scudamore-Smith and the Jimbour team lead by Bert Biggs the vineyard manager. “We’re working hard to earn a ‘local hero’ status for our product and encouraging every household in the Darling Downs to enjoy a bottle of Jimbour with friends and visitors from interstate and overseas. “The wine is a wonderful example of a warm climate shiraz – deliberately different to the cold climate vintages and rated among the best the nation can produce.” For the Winestate judging, 704 wines were tasted with Jimbour being one of only two Queensland wines to achieve a mention amongst some of the most well known brands in the country. It ranked Jimbour in the $25-$30 category alongside producers such as Yalumba, Elderton, Eldridge, Tanunda, Xabregas, Tyrrells, Pepperjack and d’Arenberg. Queensland LuxuryStyleLiving

After 7 years of trading, establishing their credibility in the world of fine French antiques and Art in Australia, Denis Geoffray and Gregoire d’Harcourt are making the change into a larger space to present their collection. The Unique France elegant provincial furniture, the fine marquetry pieces, classics of the 18th and19th century, as well as the Art Deco items have found their new comfort in this large contemporary space. The paintings of French art schools echo to the porcelain de Sevres or Compagnie des Indes, and reflect on the Baccarat glassware. It is like entering into a modern gallery where timeless pace is illuminated by crystal chandeliers. The warmth is set up from floor to ceiling, like a nest for the hand-picked pieces throughout France. The different designs

by L’Amourette Parquetry bring with their traditional marquetry and customised parquetry flooring a feeling of grandeur. The exactitude of the chiseled woods in curves, volute shapes of organic blossoming branches create a lightness of stepping through the gallery. The natural pigment colours used in depth on the walls executed by Idea Creation show the best of their talent. Using ancestral techniques of Tadelakt, Marmorino from the Renaissance and other different Lime finishing the walls become alive. The 17th century Aubusson tapestry, symbolic piece for Unique France, climbs now onto the 4 metre high ceiling of their new gallery. What a perfect set-up for their collection, which invite us into a new beautiful journey through the different periods and provinces of France. Gregoire d’Harcourt, will take you on a tour documenting the history of each piece, that he and his business partner, Denis Geoffray, have sourced from throughout France. For a prestige project like Settlers Cove, light ivory Travertine, together with honed Basalt, provide stylish and timelessly elegant surrounds for the pool setting, Bali huts and spa. The surface of these materials complies with Australian anti-slip regulations and feel great on the feet. The Travertine tiles have been laid vertically and horizontally, together with borders of honed basalt which provide a pleasing contrast. One of the best things is that these tiles are a continuation of those used throughout the project in living areas, balconies, terraces and pool surrounds. Great outdoors When it comes to the latest tends in European furniture design there is arguably none finer than Domo Collections, which is steered by Frank Novembre, who has had over 25 years experience in the furniture industry and a knack for selecting furniture suitable to Australian homes. “The home is like a blank canvas,” says Frank. “People select furniture to create their own sanctuary and to express their personality.” Dedon furniture combines comfort, style and longevity to create a stunning range of sophisticated outdoor furniture, perfect for the garden, poolside or patio. Each piece is individually hand-woven using totally weather-proof manmade fibre, developed and manufactured in Germany, hand woven in Cebu, Phillipines. It will not fade nor deteriorate making it ideal for the Australian environment. Adding an essence of French charm to any garden setting, the Jardin collection is a range of wrought-iron furniture. Inspired by the woven French metal furniture of the late 19th century, its casual elegance is matched by sturdiness and durability. Designed by Frank and also made in the Philippines, the chairs, tables, multi-tiered planters and bench seats are finished in granite or giverny.

Back to the future After furthering his studies in industrial design at the Politecnico di Milano, Liam O’Brien’s passion for furniture design and fine craftsmanship intensified, so much so he set up Nightlight Studio, which is dedicated to using high quality materials with a smart and efficient assembly process. “We believe that control over the manufacturing process from start to finish is paramount which is why all manufacturing and assembly is done in the studio in collaboration with Sydney-based craftsmen,” Liam explains.

“The success of the Gorjoso chair has become the inspiration for a whole range of furniture and applies the same principles of simplicity and quality with a contemporary appeal.” The latest incarnation of Gorjoso is an indoor chair featuring turned wenge timber dowls, mirror polished stainless steel bows and a soft upholstered leather sling. It won the VIVID 2007 Commercial Award at Furnitex, Australia's largest furniture exhibition. “A great mix of materials…well finished and really comfortable…the flexibility of a replaceable cover…excellent market potential” were some of the judges comments.

Guilt-free showers Showers that save money and don’t cost the environment sound too good to be true however with Satinjet, that’s possible. Conventional showers use single jets of water and produce a narrow, needle-like spray. The ingenious Satinjet technology propels twin jets of water to collide, turning into thousands of tiny droplets that feel soft enough for the face, yet are strong enough for the entire body. Water saving can save the average family of four 100,000 litres each year,* with the WELS three-star rated, shower range, as it uses only 7.5 and nine litres of water per minute, allowing a guilt-free luxurious shower every time.

Creating the Charme a la Française... “The most important aspect of interior decoration is to give a place soul and to make it unique”: this is Marine clave de Otaola’s work motto. Marine studied interior architecture during the 90’s in Paris, where she started her career renovating luxury apartments. While working for the Jacques Garcia Agency in early 2000, Marine was offered the unique opportunity to participate in redesigning some of the Parisian palaces, castles, renowned international restaurants and boutique hotels. International clientele recognised and appreciated Marine’s talent, and as she travelled to the world’s great cities, including London and New York, she left her creative elegant mark. Recently, she worked for DBI Design an Australian architectural company, where she was involved in a variety of large-scale projects, including Jumeriah Tower in Abu Dhabi and the Intercontinental Resort in Fiji. Marine has now settled on the Gold Coast, where the lifestyle here has evoked a new source of inspiration for her decoration expertise. Marine’s authentic French influences help her to create a new contemporary and charming atmosphere for any space. This “charme a la Française” is brought to life through BLUE PEARL DÉCOR.

Floored by masterpieces The distinctive Rug Collection range is designed to bring a sense of art and style into any home. The stunning designs and classic solids exhibit a strong emphasis on fashion-forward colours and tactile textures with plush or textured piles, all available in standard sizes. Superbly crafted in India, the collection also features the work of some of Australia’s freshest designers including Nicola Cerini, Sixhands and the Indigenous collection features artwork from famous Aboriginal artists. For example the Olgas (Kata Juta) is by Vincent Forrester, who explains: “It is a painting of the Olgas from a perspective I’m allowed to paint. Kata Juta is a sacred men’s site so I am not allowed to share the deep story with people who are not initiated in the teachings of our people.” Director Simon Robinson says his aim is to deliver leading edge design at a reasonable price: “I’ve always loved the artistic quality of a rug and have worked closely with a number of designers to bring a sense of innovation and fashion to the home. I’m proud to say we have achieved this.” Looking to think outside of the square Simon also offers customisation and can create a rug to any size, shape or colour. “Simply choose your style of yarn, texture, and a design from the current collection or request a design that is as individual as you are. From design to completion, the In Vogue service usually takes six weeks for delivery and is a truly affordable option”. Whip It Directed by: Drew Barrymore Starring: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell This is the directorial debut for Drew Barrymore. The movie stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen, who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Pollock) plays Bliss’ disapproving mother, while Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) and Juliette Lewis (Old School) play roller-derby stars. This dynamite comedy will be in cinemas early October.

An Education Directed by: Lone Scherfig Starring: Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, Alfred Molina, Dominic Cooper, Rosamund Pike, Olivia Williams, Emma Thompson and Sally Hawkins

The story of a teenage girl's comingof-age set in 1961 London, a city caught between the drab, post-war 1950s and the glamorous, more liberated decade to come. Jenny (Carey Mulligan) stands on the brink of becoming a woman: a brilliantly witty and attractive 16-year-old whose suburban life is about to be blown apart by the utterly unsuitable 30something David (Peter Sarsgaard). Urbane and witty, David manages to charm her conservative parents Jack (Alfred Molina) and Marjorie (Cara Seymour). David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner, Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny's girlfriend, the beautiful but vacuous Helen (Rosamund Pike). Just as Jenny's family's long-held dream of getting their brilliant daughter into Oxford seems within reach, Jenny is tempted by another kind of life. This gritty drama is in cinemas late October.

The Proposal

Directed by: Guy Ritchie Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong and Eddie Marsan

When business savvy Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking executive declares that she’s engaged to her unsuspecting assistant, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds); a catch that would save her from exile. Andrew agrees to the devious charade, against his better judgement, which is quickly put to the test when he is called to his family home in Alaska with his new fiancé in tow. Directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses), THE PROPOSAL will take you on a non-stop comedic walk towards the aisle, while proving that love can be found - when and where you least expect it. A fresh, romantic comedy available to own, on DVD and Blu-ray from 25th November.

In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous and loved characters, the legendary investigator Sherlock Holmes and his partner-atarms, Dr Watson, the audience is taken on an all-new adventure. The movie sees Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson charging headlong into their latest challenge in the constant fight of good against evil. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country. FOODIES ANTICIPATING A RETREAT THAT DISHES OUT ONLY LENTILS, SPROUTS, YOGHURT AND YOGA ARE IN FOR A HUGE SURPRISE. he preliminary paperwork and list of contraband is not long but some might consider it off-putting. No television, newspapers or internet. Do not pack alcohol or food, and mobile phones are restricted to your room or a designated spot near the cricket pitch. Fair enough. But as the electronic gates of Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat close, the feeling of trepidation about the next 48 hours suddenly intensifies. Set on more than 160 hectares in the Tallebudgera Valley, Gwinganna is perched atop a plateau, almost hugs the McPherson Range, boasts magnificent views of the glitzy Gold Coast yet is tucked naturally amongst eucalypt trees and a spring-fed billabong. Entrepreneur Tony de Leede took over the private village with its pretty Queenslanders, including the former Tweed Heads general store and the 1911-built church, from publisher Kevin Weldon, fulfilling a lifelong dream to live a better life and help others do the same thing. The heritage guest and common areas have been augmented by a dining room and lounge area, state-or-the-art gym, two wet-edge pools, an outdoor yoga pavilion and the plush Orchard suites have a king-size bed, marble bathroom, empty fridge, kettle, herbal teas, filtered water and a verandah overlooking the orchard and olive grove. The weekend program manager Kay, who has longer-than-Rapunzel hair, guided the early arrivals on a thirty minute sunset walk, followed it by an orientation session, served delish mocktails, and explained that a

single glass of wine, organic like everything else is allowed, as is coffee until 11am. Surprise, surprise. “We’re not about lentils and sprouts,” the affable Austrian-born chef Hermann Schafellner, who also conducts cooking classes, says at dinner. “We believe that nature should dictate what we eat and although some people are surprised when we have say lamb is on the menu, it’s all about balance. After all you do need a little fat.” Sated after three courses, there was time to read a few pages in bed before tiredness took over. And let’s not forget there’s knock at the door before sunrise. Time to chuck back the doona and join the qi gong session – similar to tai chi. Kinesis training, a light walk or challenging hike are followed by a hearty alfresco breakfast of fruit and poached eggs with sun-blessed tomatoes. More activities were broken by morning tea and gluten-free cookies. A sensational lunch of four salads with just-picked produce, made a visit to the gardens with resident botanist, ecologist and after dinner bagpipe-playing John Palmer a must. “It’s all about variety and beautiful bees,” he enthuses while encouraging tastes, chook chatting and seed gathering. Afternoons invite nothing or a visit to the 33-room Spa Sanctuary, billed as the largest in the southern hemisphere. As Adi, a Balinese masseuse with the strength of a Viking pummels away, groans give way to sighs. No wonder Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-lee Furness are sold on this place.

Heights, hope and big hearts... the `Annette Duffy’ story.. words Rachel Syers A 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL FLEES HER HOME IN THE DARK OF NIGHT WITH NO SHOES, SLEEPS IN TREES TO STAY SAFE FROM ROAMING ANIMALS, WALKS ON BLEEDING FEET FOR TWO WEEKS TO HER AUNT'S HOUSE AND IS THEN HIDDEN AWAY FOR FEAR OF BEING MUTILATED BY ORDER OF HER OWN MOTHER AND FATHER. he’s also scared of being sold in marriage to a man three times her age. If that

S

were to happen in Australia, the community and government combined would be screaming for justice. In fact, it's unfathomable to think of such a

tragedy unfolding on the streets of our country. However, when we hear such tales emerging from far-off lands it's more often the case that we turn a blind eye and get on with out own personal problems … like finding a designer handbag to match those heels, or what to serve for dinner that has a low-carb content lest our thighs are looking a little too curvy. Not so for Annette Duffy, a Scottish migrant who came to Australia with four young children in 1988 and via hard work and determination, became a Queensland school principal for the past 13 years, currently at St Brigid's Catholic Primary School in Nerang. Annette has shown empathy for the plight of such girls facing the horrors of female circumcision and forced child marriages happening illegally overseas, and taken steps to address the problem. Literally thousands of steps in fact – straight to the top of the iconic six-kilometre high Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. “It was the hardest thing I've ever done – and to tell you the truth I'd probably never do it again if I had known what I was getting myself into,” said Annette, with only a hint of a chuckle. For she's quite serious about raising awareness – and raising desperately needed funds – for the runaway girls of Tanzania. Several girls die every year from the excruciatingly painful procedure with an unsterilised razor, with many more suffering permanent physical damage, mental health problems and infertility. When an exhausted Annette reached the mountain peak after six 14-hour days of climbing, she felt the immense satisfaction knowing she had not only raised thousands of dollars in sponsorship from supporters back home on the Gold Coast, but also honoured her own daughter. “My daughter, Clair, had been at me for two years to do the climb with her and I kept saying ‘No, I’m so busy’, but finally I gave in and began training with boot camps and the like, and we ended up making the climb together with one of my sons Matthew and a family friend,” said Annette.

. Annette Duffy with kids from St Brigids “So many people have died on that same climb, and there's only about a 50 to 70 per cent success rate of reaching the peak, so I was in disbelief that I'd made it in the end.” Clair made her mother aware of the Tanzanian girls after becoming a legal officer with the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda that is based in Tanzania. “She has been there for five years now and is part of the legal team that previously successfully prosecuted three members of the cabinet in Rwanda for the genocide over there, so yes, I am very proud of her,” said Annette. By all accounts though, Clair has plenty to be proud about when it comes to her mother as well. From her principal's seat at Nerang, she heads the St Brigid's Charity to support the Tanzanian non-government organisation Aang Serian, which is leading a grassroots campaign against female genital mutilation in six Maasai villages in northern Tanzania. “We've raised $10,000 so far just from fundraising projects within the school, the climb, fundraising drives and donations from various people, and that's all helped towards building dormitories for the Maasai girls,” said Annette. The 'girls' number about 30 – aged between 11 and 18 when they fled from their villages to avoid forced marriage and female genital mutilation – and have found refuge at the Aang Serian’s Noonkodin Secondary School in Eluwai village established in 1999 near Arusha, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Aang Serian raised funds from supporters around the world to construct a safe house for the girls, and is trying to re-educate their parents and reunite families. The Gold Coast branch of Soroptimists International - a women’s service organisation which aims to ensure equal access to education and training for all females - became aware of Annette and Clair’s involvement and have committed to sponsoring two Maasai girls attending the school, which provides vital secondary education. Additional sponsors are still needed to fund the girls, with as little as $800 a year supporting a Maasai girls on parade with Annette Duffy

girl's education and living expenses. Annette's other passion is improving indigenous education, including the Jambe project funded by the Department of Education, which is about reconciliation, education and cultural learning for both indigenous and non-indigenous students and families. Also, after eight years, Annette is near completion of her PhD. “My study is looking a the leadership, particularly the spiritual leadership, of four Indigenous school principals. “I hope the work will break some new ground and change things for the better.”

Her new exhibition “NEW YORK NAKED” is full of artistic bombshells where the unfolding of the subject matter and the artistry are used to evoke the powerful imagery of Woman. Keller is experimenting with the art materials of the 21st century. Using her very distinctive signature style, she combines layers of rusted acrylic, enamel, oil, shellac and iridescent acrylics to create a visual atmosphere that echoes the independent qualities of Woman. Some of her pieces burn very brightly, in others the subjects smolder, waiting for the unsuspecting viewer to interpret the chiascuro that exists between each piece. Gallery Director of Sydney’s exclusive Salmon Galleries, Judith Salmon, says of Tracey’s works – “There are technical parallels here between Keller and the English romantic painter, William Turner. Turner’s experimentation with watercolours and oils led to a revolution in painting and an emphasis on creating light and fluency on the painting’s surface. Like Turner, Keller eschews solid objects and detail in favour of more ephemeral effects. Unlike Turner though, she focuses solely on the beauty and harmony, never any destructive potential.”

the MAN IN BLACK... Electrifying Australian rock legend, Tex Perkins, takes to the stage as Johnny Cash in THE MAN IN BLACK. The tough, challenging life of the music superstar and his legacy of powerful hit songs is brought to life in a brandnew show. THE MAN IN BLACK will commence a strictly limited season at the Twelfth Night Theatre, Bowen Hills from 14th October 2009. It’s a lethal combination, when Australian 'rock royalty', Tex Perkins takes to the stage to play one of the most influential American singer-songwriters of the 20th Century – Johnny Cash. Renowned as “one of the wildest and most electrifying front men in rock” (Herald Sun), Tex Perkins, singer with the multiARIA Award-winning Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon and Ladyboyz, will lead The Tennessee Four in the night of memorable music. Cash, who died in 2003, was one of America’s most influential country music stars, his output over a long career covered a range of genres, including rockabilly, rock ‘n’ roll, blues, folk and gospel. He sold well over 50 million records in his lifetime and his music is still selling today. Johnny Cash was dealt a very tough hand early in life, but through his music and dedication he became a legend throughout the world. Rachael Tidd, who has sung and acted in everything from Shakespeare to Sondheim, interprets June Carter’s vocal style in the show, and Peter Luscombe, James Black, Steve Hadley and Ashley Naylor are The Tennessee Four. Written by Australian theatrical producer Jim McPherson, who confesses to a 40-year fascination with the wildly unpredictable star, THE MAN IN BLACK is two hours of Cash’s magnificent music interwoven with the story of his rise to stardom, his fight for survival - and his eventual redemption. Straight out of the classic American songbook - Ring of Fire, I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Sunday Mornin’ Coming Down, Get Rhythm, A Boy Named Sue, Hey Porter are just some of the more than two dozen Cash hits in the show. Season opens 14th October at Twelfth Night Theatre, 4 Cintra Road, Bowen Hills. For Tickets phone the Box Office 07 3252 5122 www.twelfthnighttheatre.com.au or Book online at www.ticketek.com.au

Nov, the ‘Miracle Treatment’ offers customers the chance to achieve amazing results – by taking action for orangutans. Borneo’s orangutans are facing injury, disease and death, as their habitat is destroyed by logging for the growing palm oil industry. WSPA works with the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation to fund the work of the world’s largest orangutan sanctuary, Nyaru Menteng, currently home to more than 650 rescued orangutans. Michel Zwecker, Development Manager at WSPA, says: “The majority of orangutans at the sanctuary are orphaned babies like Inka. She was just a baby when her mother was viciously killed in front of her. Traumatised and terrified she was carted off for sale on the black market. But she was one of the lucky ones. Rescued by the sanctuary, she is now nurtured and cared for.” Orphaned babies like Inka require up to six years of rehabilitation, learning the skills they should have learnt from their mothers, before their re-release into the wild can be considered. Mark Kindness, Chief Executive of The Body Shop, says: “Orangutans are facing enormous animal welfare issues as a direct result of human activity. With a little support from enough caring people, we can work together with

We’re asking all The Body Shop customers to get involved and become a part of the ‘Miracle Treatment’ to help more orangutans like Inka,” Mr Kindness comments. There are a number of ways The Body Shop customers can achieve amazing results with their ‘Miracle Treatment’, including: • Giving a miracle – Donating to the Borneo Orangutan Sanctuary • Creating a miracle – Holding an event to raise funds • Buying a miracle – Wearing cute orangutan merchandise • Spreading the miracle – Involving friends For further information visit your The Body Shop store or log onto www.wspa.org.au/miracles.
