A SPECIAL EVENT

The Perfect Wedding… Gold Coast Style

A

Official Photographer: Thurtell Photography

FTER A ROMANTIC PROPOSAL OF MARRIAGE ON NEW YEAR'S EVE 1/1/11, WHILST SIPPING CHAMPAGNE AND WATCHING THE EXCITING FIREWORKS DISPLAY OVER SYDNEY HARBOUR FROM THEIR HOTEL BALCONY, DOMINIQUE MURRAY AND FIANCÉ MATT MCADIE DECIDED THEY HAD TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT LOCATION FOR THEIR WEDDING AS WELL.

They looked at locations in various exotic locations, but ultimately found the perfect place right here on the Gold Coast. They chose the beautiful glass chapel at Hyatt Regency, Sanctuary Cove, where the sunlight beamed through the floor to ceiling windows illuminating the minister and bridal party in almost ethereal light. With the chapel and pews decorated with fresh lilies and roses, and a string quartet setting the tempo for the official walk down the aisle, the bride and her entourage arrived by Rolls Royce style golf buggies. As she entered the chapel to the strains of Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, clutching a bouquet of white lilies and coral, peach and creme brûlée roses, in a specially designed Ann Wilson gown featuring a hand embroidered bodice of silver bugle beads and pearls, sweeping full organza skirt and long veil, guests were captivated by Dominique's beauty and barely-constrained excitement Her three best friends, bridesmaids Alice Shacklock, Natasha St Ange and Jaclyn Wilson wore strapless, bright coral gowns that highlighted the warmth of the Gold Coast lifestyle, and carried bouquets of brightly hued roses. Matt, his best man Aaron McAdie, and the groomsmen James Nelson and Dean Lobban who had flown in from Victoria, wore black dinner suits with ties and boutonnieres chosen to complement the bridesmaids elegant gowns. Dominique's second cousin, 3-year-old Amelia Denman almost stole the

show, as she took up the role of flower girl with just the right amount of dignity and delight. As guests departed after the ceremony for a group photograph on the lawn showering the couple with coloured rose petals, while the string quartet played All The Small Things by Blink 182; then bridal party slipped away to have photos taken around the Hyatt gardens before departing in a silver stretch limousine for more photographs on Main Beach at sunset, The reception was held at Horizon's in the Sheraton Mirage Hotel at Main Beach following canapés and champagne cocktails in Breakers overlooking the beach and setting sun. Horizons was decorated with a stylish beach theme in mind, featuring a myriad of twinkling lights throughout the room and coloured hanging lanterns over the dance floor. The tables and chairs were dressed in white linen with glass vases filled with white orchids and tabletops sprinkled with rose petals, adding a note of warmth to the room that oozed with a fairyland ambience. Dominique also chose clear white ribbon bound boxes of peach and coconut macarons for their bombonbiere. Guests included many St Hildas 'old girls' and friends from Bond University, where Dominique is completing her Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology, as well as many relatives and family friends who had travelled from Brisbane, interstate and overseas for the occasion. All were encouraged to have their photos taken in the photo booth at the back of the room to keep as a remembrance of a wonderful evening. Although it was mainly the female guests who danced the night away to the DJ's pumping sounds - a few males did brave the dance floor as well. Definitely a magical Gold Coast wedding for everyone to remember, especially proud parents Tom and Kaylene Murray and Wendy and Greg McAdie.

From Tina Sparkle on the big screen to presenting television’s Dancing with the Stars, Mornings and Big Brother, former ballroom dancing champion Sonia Kruger, according to Helen Flanagan, effervesces at every turn.

Strictly Sonia

A

ll little girls dream about dancing but Sonia Kruger wanted to be famous for it. Devoted mother Margaret traipsed from classes to competitions, raised Sonia’s older sister Debbie and younger brother Adam, and made matching outfits for the girls. It’s only in recent times she’s come to appreciate the full extent of the sacrifices made by her mum - who met husband Adrian at Brisbane’s Cloudland ballroom, making dreams of dancing on the world stage come true.

“She taught us to dance in the lounge room,” recalls Sonia who was born in Toowoomba, went to primary school in Mt Gravatt and Waterford before moving to Beenleigh on the Gold Coast for high school. “We did a barn dance to ABBA’s I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do and being a huge fan of old movie musicals, Debbie was named after Debbie Reynolds and I was named after (ice dancer and actress) Sonja Henie.

“I did jazz and ballet also sport and was a bit of a nerd, bringing home reports pressed in books to keep them flat, before presenting them to Mum and Dad, like “ta-da” as a middle child wanting to get my parent’s attention would! “I really didn’t take to ballet, so went to ballroom dancing classes with a boy who needed a partner but that finished when he retired. He was 19!” In Sydney she completed an arts degree, taught dance at NIDA and later at the Sydney Dance Company she was right into zumba, hip-hop and jazz classes, although a knee construction put pay to that for a while. “When I found out about auditions for Strictly Ballroom I had to be a part of it.” Finding fame in the role of Tina Sparkle in the 1992 hit movie was Sonia’s acting debut, she also was credited as the ballroom advisor, and says one of the best parts about making the movie was being able to wear Catherine Martin’s incredible costumes plus going on a promotional tour of Japan where “Todd [McKenney] and I did a game show and we couldn’t understand a word they were saying. Todd and I have known each other since we were about nine because of dance competitions.” Sonia’s heart was now firmly entrenched in show business but auditions after the movie were “all too straight – not comedic”. Working as a reporter on Simon Townsend’s kid’s program Wonder World “was a baptism of fire but great training in live television and the importance of thinking on your feet”. Amongst other roles were hosting 10 Years Younger in 10 Days and as the entertainment reporter for the Seven Network - a natural segue eventually into Dancing with the Stars which she co-hosted with Daniel MacPherson. Her barbs were usually aimed at judge and friend Todd McKenney, who she also did breakfast radio with, but occasionally her irreverent humour or ‘Krugerisms’ landed her in hot water. Not surprisingly, many tried to poach Sonia during her eleven seasons with DWTS, where she was one of the faces in the jewel of the Seven Network’s crown – no doubt diamanté-encrusted. Late last year however, the glam funny-girl with the down-to-earth attitude and self-deprecating humour that’s so refreshing in the much ego-driven world of television, finally succumbed to overtures from Nine. She signed on to host a revived Big Brother and fill the glittery shoes of Kerri-Anne Kennerly on Mornings, cohosting with David Campbell. It was an offer to good to refuse. "Dancing was fantastic and I've loved every minute of it, but the opportunity to do Big Brother and Mornings every day with two

hours of live television which I love and to revitalise the timeslot with a whole new circus, gave me greater scope going forward,” she says admitting that off-camera banter and roars of laughter are far more important to the show than one would expect, as they fuel the chemistry between her and David and ensure their ad-lib humour always adds pace and energy to the show. “It’s not exactly the smoothest production of all time but I like it when it’s a bit shambolic. We want it to feel live and real. “I met David on DWTS and suggested this gig. He is hilarious – like a wind-up toy – a one-man entertainment machine. He’ll come into my dressing room on the set of Mornings and entertain everyone, telling inappropriate stories, often breaking into song and impersonating the likes of Barry White and Michael Bolton,” adds Sonia whose list of stand-out stars she’s met includes Jason Segal, Emily Blunt, Michael Bublé, Taylor Armstrong from Real Housewives and the “humble and very lovely” Michael Crawford. Big Brother is recorded in the original home at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast, so Sonia is back in her old stamping ground – temporarily. “My parents live at Mount Tamborine, my sister is in Burleigh and my brother lives very close to Coomera,” says Sonia adding with a big laugh that her Virgoan ways would have her voted out of the house for being boring and scrupulously clean. “People would go ‘Nah, she’s too dull’ as I pick up their clothes and make their beds.”

“I met David on DWTS and suggested this gig. He is hilarious – like a wind-up toy – a one-man entertainment machine... Whether dressed as a glamazon in Alex Perry or Steve Ketell designs, poured into gold leggings for a Big Brother promo, or wearing what she describes as “sporty lux” on the set, blonde bombshell Sonia looks more like 37 than 47. No wonder she forgets how old she really is. "I’m lucky I take after Dad’s side of the family because he has the olive skin and no lines and he’s in his late 70s. When I turned 40 I thought, wow that’s old, and now I’m not even very worried about turning 50," explains Sonia who believes in keeping her long, lithe limbs toned and not shying away from the virtues of fillers and lasers for a helping hand in the ageing department - procedures she likens to having her hair coloured or nails manicured. She’s not a party person, nor likes being the centre of attraction, preferring to be a homely “skanky dag in uggies”, taking Fergie the Staffy and “lap dog” for a daily walk around her home on Sydney’s leafy North Shore or enjoying a long lunch of seafood especially Queensland mudcrabs. Romantically linked since 2009 to Craig McPherson, executive producer of Seven Network’s Today Tonight, Sonia confides she’s never been happier. Not surprising given the very public split from her second husband James Davies. Whilst relishing the stability of life with her “fantastic partner” Sonia still talks about wanting children however attempts to conceive have so far been unsuccessful. "It's been a struggle," she tells the October issue of The Australian Women's Weekly. "We did conceive naturally several times and I miscarried on a couple of occasions. We tried IVF and it wasn't successful. The doctors were very clear with me too, that for women over the age of 45, which was the age we attempted IVF, the success rate is zero. "I think for a lot of women my age, who perhaps didn't find the right person until later in life, you can want children as much as you like but it doesn't mean it is going to happen. I do have a lot of children my life. My brother has a three-year-old. My friends have babies. I think there are far worse things that can happen to a person.”

Yellow Diamonds on trend...

The ‘Sunshine Ring’ – the 9 Carat yellow diamond set in platinum is surrounded by 198 white diamonds totalling more than 3 carats and is worth $250,000.

20

LuxuryStyleLiving

The yellow diamond is emerging as a popular fashion accessory, making its mark in the world of high fashion. The rare yellow stone has recently been seen on the fingers of Hollywood celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood, Heidi Klum, Beyonce, Rebecca Romjin and Natalie Portman, and demand for yellow diamonds and other coloured gemstones is higher than ever before. Shiels Director, Toby Bensimon, said historically yellow diamonds weren’t popular with consumers, but they have introduced them into the Shiels range in response to increased demand. “Ten years ago it was unheard of for a woman to wear a yellow diamond, but there has been a shift in people’s appreciation of coloured diamonds and recently we have seen women choosing yellow diamonds for engagement and eternity rings,” Mr. Bensimon said. The Sunshine Yellow Diamond Range is now available at all Shiels stores and online at its e-store. This stunning piece was originally designed for Hollywood royalty and was the biggest yellow diamond of its kind and quality found last year in Australia. Mr Bensimon said, “Our agent could not identify the celebrity who was seeking a statement piece with serious ‘wow’ factor, but the undercarriage of the 9 Carat yellow diamond has one side that resembles a ‘W’ written in diamonds, and we suspect this is because her name starts with a ‘W’”. www.shiels.com.au

Gold Coast Takes On China's Bikini World Record… An international bikini war has erupted with the Gold Coast throwing down the gauntlet to China and vowing it will win back its record for the world’s largest bikini parade. The Glitter Strip received worldwide attention when it set a Guinness World Record with 357 bikini-clad girls on parade on 2nd October, 2011. The record was broken by Florida’s Panama City with 450 girls in March 2012, then smashed by China’s current record of 1085 in August. Now, the Gold Coast wants its title back and is set to stage the Gold Coast Bulletin's Bikini Parade 2013 World Record Attempt on Surfers Paradise Beach on Sun 6th January. Event organiser Leanne St. George said registrations for the Gold Coast Bulletin's Bikini Parade World Record Attempt were now open and called on the women and girls of Australia to join the challenge. "China has stolen the Gold Coast’s rightful crown as bikini capital of the world and now we want it back," she said. "The Gold Coast set such a high benchmark when it hosted the event in 2011 that within 12 months, two countries had broken our record. "We’re determined to win it back but we need all Australian women – mums, daughters and even grandmas - to break out their bikinis and sign up for this great family-friendly event. "With the proceeds going to the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club you’ll also be helping a good cause." "The bikini parade received unprecedented international coverage for the Coast and we hope the next record bid will be just as successful." The world record attempt will start at 10am in Cavill Avenue Mall, with the bikini girls parading for 1.6km along Surfers Paradise Beach before arriving at a beach stage, where a Guinness World Record adjudicator will do an official head count. Participants for the bikini parade must register online at www.goldcoastbikiniparade.com.au or in person at the sign-up centre on the ground floor of the Circle on Cavill Shopping Centre in Surfers Paradise.

FLORABOTANICA BALENCIAGA Paris The Story… It is a strange and wonderful garden in which you do not know whether these flowers are innocent or poisonous. They are magnetic flowers. Florabotanica is an imaginative fragrance name. It evokes the 18th-century botanical gardens in which the most exotic and rarest plant species were displayed. Strangecoloured plants discovered in distant countries brought back from their travels by enthusiastic biologists, at the cost of their lives, to create the extraordinary arboretum. “It is a secret garden where you find surprising flowers that surpass the imagination. They are beautiful but are they really that harmless? Flowers can be cruel, carnivorous or venomous, contain poisons. What would a perfume that contained the charm and mystery of flowers be like? This is the story that we wanted to tell with Florabotanica. ” — Nicolas Ghesquière

In a jungle of heat and humidity, this new makeup stays put. Anyone who suffers from oily skin understands the challenges of finding a foundation that offers the right amount of coverage, without feeling too heavy, or causing skin to look shiny and greasy. Some women turn to powders because they're concerned that liquid formulas will clog pores and cause skin to look dirty. However, on oily skin powders may not provide the full coverage needed or even set into lines and wrinkles. Thankfully, Clinique has created a revolutionary makeup that provides a beautiful, flawless finish that helps skin stay matte all day long. $50.00

The Biggest Prick of all... With nearly 3 million Australians at risk of having potentially fatal diabetes. new book titled Don’t Feel Like a Prick? has been written by recently diagnosed diabetic Lynn Santer. It is a companion to an upcoming film on diabetes of the same name that the Gold Coast author is co-producing with Alby Mangles, in collaboration with Lewis Kaplan, CEO of Diabetes Australia. After reading the book, Diabetes Australia Health Committee chairman Dr Michael d’Emden said Ms Santer was “a gung ho, out there, take no prisoners, type A personality” and Prof Paul Zimmet of the Baker Institute said “I found your sections on metabolic syndrome and LADA excellent” - and that is from the man who invented the term LADA! (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults) In fact, the second print of this book has been revised with new information from the Baker Institute. This simply written book is the first of its kind in the world, and aims to help newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics, pre-diabetics and friends and family of diabetics. There has never been a book on diabetes like this one, it is written in an engaging

and entertaining manner that people will want to read, with plenty of cheeky cartoons, celebrity interest and even some adults-only content. “It’s small, easy to follow, a bit irreverent, at times funny, poignant, unapologetically confrontational, and deliberately not politically correct. It contains personal stories and is an enjoyable and page-turning read with simple, useful information and messages. There are lots of tips and tricks to manage diabetes and we touch on the psychology of why so many are ignoring it,” Ms Santer said. The book is available at Amazon & select Terry White Pharmacies. Summer takes a step back to the Age of Aquarius..

Available from: The Deck Oasis Shopping Centre Shop 45 Level l above Woolworths Broadbeach

The 5th Dimension sang the 70s hit song "Let the Sunshine in" and that is exactly what the stylists are predicting for your summer hair and makeup. It’s the time of Aquarius all over again - with inspiration gained from the iconic flower power years. If you don’t quite understand the ideology - just ask any Baby Boomer - we all lived it - and loved it. Soft flowing hair, single or twin plaits. hair adornments, a softly tied head scarf, and fresh, natural makeup to support a more youthful and innocent look for the season ahead. Whether you choose to go full natural with nude lip colours as well, or choose a soft, sensuous pink or apricot hue to enhance your natural lip contour - both work perfectly. And, at night - try for a smoky eyed look with a hint of metallic to create a transcendental quality. And, if you want to step it up - I would never say no to a rich red lip colour! Now that definitely makes a statement. It’s Summer and time to have fun and ‘let the sunshine in’!

Fifty shades of.... GREY?

The 3 Tough Questions Your Husband Will Ask After Reading Fifty Shades of Grey (and how to answer them without getting into trouble.)

30

LuxuryStyleLiving

Our editor, Kaylene Murray asked comedian Marty Wilson a.k.a. L.O.L. James (author of the best-selling What I Wish I Knew series) and the newly released the 'Fifty Shades of Blokes Trilogy' a set of comedic gift books for blokes, who don’t actually understand what all the fuss over the original Fifty Shades trilogy is all about' to give us a little insight into 'the grey phenomenon'. The 3 Tough Questions Your Husband Will Ask After Reading Fifty Shades of Grey (and how to answer them without getting into trouble.) From ancient history and Helen starting the Trojan Wars, to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to the current movie This Means War, history is full of men doing really, really dumb things when they believe their lady fancies someone else. So sure, get your fella to read Fifty Shades, but be ready for some insecurity. After all, unless he is a young, sexy multi-billionaire with incredibly long fingers (Oh my...) he won’t completely measure up to Mr Grey. Here’s

some questions that will be in his mind – even if he doesn’t ask out loud – and some suggested answers to smooth things over. 1. Am I rubbish in bed? This is a biggie that you must quash early on. Nothing makes a man feel more vulnerable than you thinking about a bloke who is, quite frankly, much better than him in bed. I suggest you use a sporting metaphor – always a sure fire hit. Say to your fella ‘My darling, I fell for you because you are great in bed. But even Mohammad Ali studied boxing technique, had trainers, and put in hours and hours to get better and better and better. You are great, but don't you want to be “The Greatest”? Our love life is already at an 8.5, but let’s try and get it to a 10.’ 2. Is it because he’s rich and stunningly good-looking? This is obviously partly why Christian is a turn on, but men fitting that description are in every single Mills & Boon, so there’s more to it. Here’s my suggested answer using examples he’ll know and love. Say ‘James Bond always saves “The Whole World”, not just a little town in Yorkshire. Luke Skywalker frees “The Entire Galaxy.” Fiction always takes things to extremes. So, of course he’s a multi-billionaire (who never actually seems to work to earn his money), and of course he stunningly handsome, but the things that really make him attractive is he spends all his time and energy trying to make sure their sex and their relationship is wonderful. He gives Ana a safe way to explore her

sexuality. And I’d love to do that with you.” You’ve given him reassurance AND an action plan. Blokes love that. 3. Do you want to get kinky? This is, of course, your choice. After speaking to a few female friends, the attraction is having someone who is open to listening to a few ideas – without any judgement or ridicule – and having a crack at spicing things up. So say to your lad ‘It’s not the B&D as such – although I would like to have a go at (insert your favourite bit of kink here) – it’s more that Christian is open to trying anything to make their sex incredible. So how about we have a glass or seven of pinot, swap a few fantasies, and see where that leads?’ 'Fifty Shades of Blokes Trilogy' by L.O.L. James Fifty Shelves of Grey, Fifty Spades of Grey and Fifty Shades of Grass These hilarious gift books follow the story of handyman Dave, who does some work for a young entrepreneur named Christina, and discovers her desire for something ‘a bit rough’. The unworldly, innocent Dave – like almost every man before him – has no idea what’s going on, and believes Christina simply shares his passion for sports, DIY and gardening. With every story written the way men would like it – incredibly short – this series is a parody that will leave you asking, “How do men and women ever get together?” Available from Big Sky Publishing RRP $14.99 each www.bigskypublishing.com.au

old Coast fashion queen, Lisa Zeppelin will take her new season collection to Brisbane, for a unique fashion parade and High Tea to be held in the magnificent St John's Anglican Cathedral, at the top of the city centre on the 23rd February. St John's Cathedral initially designed in the Victorian Gothic style by one of England's finest late 19th century architects, John Loughborough Pearson, was built over a period of almost 100 years, is hauntingly beautiful. The cathedral's lofty ceilings, subtle lighting, slender colonnades and delicately proportioned columns will make a perfect backdrop for a fashion parade of new season fashion. Commander Charles Clark of The Order of Saint John is pleased to have Lisa, herself a senior member of the Order of St John, showing her fashion for the third year running at a unique location, to raise funds for the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, to aid their important artificial heart project. Queensland's most impressive cathedral, which over the year plays host to the arts and orchestral events, weddings and recitals, also houses Australia's largest six-division pipe cathedral organ; a Cathedral Choir, and its own orchestra the Camerata of St John's, which holds several concerts each year. It is also an international centre of pilgrimage with over 20,000 visitors each year. This is a wonderful opportunity Lisa explained, to showcase fashion sourced from within Australia and overseas, and have them worn by 'real women' not models - in a magnificent setting. FACE TO FACE An inspiring assignment behind the lens! Greg Smith shoots for his country at the 2012 Paralympics. PHOTOS: © GREG SMITH, SPORT THE LIBRARY Gold Coast photographer Greg Smith

W

hen we think of the recent Olympics and Paralympics we acknowledge the amazing athletes who devoted their time to becoming the best in the world at their chosen sport. Hard work, determination, perseverance and dedication coupled with a relentless passion and a handful of good luck are the elements that make these supreme athletes the best in their field. Although Gold Coast photographer Greg Smith may never have been chosen to represent Australia as a sportsman, the same elements - hard work, determination, perseverance, dedication and his extraordinary talent behind the camera recently saw him travel to London as one of the official photographers for the 2012 Australian Paralympic Team. Greg’s pathway to the Paralympics began back in 2003 when he and his wife Karen created iKapture images. A career that started spending weekends in the hot sun capturing kids competing in motocross events all over the country, to snapping the best in the business as they competed at national and world super cross events, Greg

is well respected in his chosen field with his images regularly gracing the covers of the country’s favourite bike magazines. Along with Greg’s spectacular bike images, his portfolio also boasts an impressive selection of food, hotel and corporate images. When Greg started iKapture, his goal was to become one of the Country’s top motocross photographers. At that time he had no idea that he would be spending the next nine years learning and perfecting his craft in preparation to shoot for his country alongside the best photographers in the world. Greg talks to us about how he got the Paralympic gig and about his time as a “rookie” Paralympic photographer at one of the world’s most prestigious and inspirational events. How did you get the opportunity to shoot for the Australian Team? Early this year award winning photographer Jeff Crow from Sport the Library phoned and asked me a question that would change the way I look at sports photography for the rest of my life. “Hey mate, do you want to come and shoot the Paralympics with me?” Without a second thought I said “Yes” and within 24 hours I had my accreditation. Even though you have previously shot at other large international sporting events, how does this one compare? It’s massive and it was exciting to be a part of it. There are so many events to be covered and events are spread out all over London which meant navigating the tube and national rail system in unfamiliar territory to get to and from the events. The security was also crazy. At some events you had to go through three security points to access the photography areas and most of the time, once through we’d find the best locations taken by the big players, Getty and Reuters, who had been able to pre-book their positions. It was great to see those guys in action though. What venue provided the best photographic results? The Olympic Stadium for sure! It’s iconic and with the magnificent Olympic flames, all the colour and activity everything about that venue made for great photography. The crowd was pumped and the atmosphere was electric. Aside from the opening and closing ceremonies, for me the best experience shooting in that venue was when Oscar Pistorious ran in the 200 metres. I was in the photography pit alongside more than 200 other photographers bumping lenses and all vying for that piece of history. That’s an experience I will

swimming and as an English swimmer was being presented with a medal he held up a photo and kissed at the sky. I then found out that it was a photo of his father who had passed away just a few weeks earlier. It was a very heart-wrenching moment watching him celebrate his achievement while at the same time mourning the loss of his father. Being the Paralympics, you must have seen some intriguing things? Absolutely! The one legged high jump was incredible to watch. The competitors hopped towards the bar and somersaulted over the high bar, with some of them jumping over 1.70 metres - a height that our able-bodied athletes sometimes struggle to clear. The Wheelchair Rugby was also one of the toughest sporting events I have ever witnessed. The competitors have no self-preservation and Ryley Batt is one of the toughest and Stephanie_Schweitzer most feared competitors in the world. It was clear that Australia would not have received the never forget. Are the hours as an Olympic photographer as gold medal without him. Did you get to spend much time with the long as everyone says? Yes, longer! With such long days, juggling jobs, Australian athletes? No, at the competition you weren’t allowed to mix getting to and from events, plus processing images it’s hard to fit in much else. Sleep was something with the athletes but I did fly home with them and that I quickly learned was not a priority. We worked had the opportunity to talk with them at the around 20 hours a day for the 12 days. The days welcoming ceremony when we landed in Sydney. What sort of gear do you use? started around 7am, events finished around 11pm, I’m a Canon man. I purchased a brand new 1DX eating dinner at 1am became the norm and we specifically for this job and as a CPS member Canon usually finished processing photos around 3am. supported the event with loan gear which enabled The 2012 Paralympics really inspired our nation. How did it feel to be there and see these ‘super- me to prop up my lens selection. The lenses used most were 400mm F2.8 and the 70-200mm F2.8. I humans’ in action and capture the emotion? They are all amazing. It’s was absolutely incredible took over 21,000 photos over the 12 days and the to see what they can achieve. Our able bodied 1DX did a phenomenal job. How would you sum up the entire experience? athletes are phenomenal but when you see the It was the hardest gig I’ve ever done, but also the passion and determination the Paralympian’s have most amazing and inspirational one. It took a couple and the support they have for their fellow of weeks to get over what is known in the competitors, it’s awe-inspiring. Was there any particular moment that Photography industry as the ‘post-Olympic hangover,’ but to sum it up, shooting the 2012 touched you? Yes, I was covering a medal ceremony at the Paralympics is an assignment that I will never forget.

Emporium Hotel Cocktail Bar reveals twist on a classic... The Bloody Mary gets an Aussie makeover from the country’s leading boutique hotel

I

t’s a cocktail classic all over the world, and now, in the lead-up to what is set to be a glorious Queensland summer, the top Bar Manager at the Emporium Hotel has created the Ultimate Bloody Mary with a modern Aussie twist, to pay tribute to our sunburnt country. Meet The Australian Mary*. Emporium Hotel Cocktail Bar Manager Jared Ashdown’s customised new cocktail boasts only Australian grown flavours, including Mount Tambourine Pepper Vodka, a dash of beetroot juice, Murray River Pink sea salt and muddled bush cherry tomatoes. “I wanted a fresh, Australian twist on the Bloody Mary in the lead up to summer without compromising the integrity and foundation of the original drink,” said Jared. “It’s a personal favourite - and all made with Australian products. It’s a high-quality, all Aussie cocktail we are proud to offer at the Emporium Hotel Cocktail Bar.” Jared and his team have an impressive talent for creating delicious, high-quality cocktails that leap off the cocktail menu. The finesse and technique used to create the liquid masterpieces is one of the many reasons so many have made Emporium Hotel Cocktail Bar their venue of choice in Brisbane. Located in the heart of Brisbane’s stylish Emporium precinct – a haven for lovers of fashion and food – the Hotel is just minutes from the Brisbane CBD, QPAC, Southbank; and close to the Brisbane Cruise Terminal, airports and arterials. *It is claimed that The Bloody Mary was named after Queen Mary I of England who earned her nickname ‘Bloody Mary’ through the effort to reestablish Roman Catholicism in England by ordering persecution of Protestants in the 1500’s. We like the sound of the Australian Mary much more. Emporium Hotel & Emporium Hotel Cocktail Bar - 1000 Ann St, Fortitude Valley 3253 6999 www.emporiumhotel.com.au

Herb crusted duck leg, ginger pears, winter salad, orange dressing (Serves 4)

Duck leg MASSIMO MELE When award winning Australian chef Massimo Mele heard about the Aussie Orange Season, he was eager to get involved as an official ambassador. Massimo, who is the Executive Chef of the famous Hugos group in Sydney, is a great believer of the farm-to-table principle. He grew up on the family farm in Italy learning, picking and cooking fresh produce, and that’s why he understands how important it is to support citrus growers throughout Australia. In honour of Aussie Orange Season, Massimo has created six unique recipes that showcase oranges at their very best. The recipes highlight the versatility of oranges as a delicious cooking ingredient. “Whether they’re used as an accompaniment, or at the start of a meal, an orange can add great flavour to your food,” Massimo said. “With some of these recipes the inclusion of orange is more obvious than others, but from the first mouthful you will certainly be aware of that vibrant orange taste.”

500 gm rock sea salt 1 orange and 1 lemon, rind removed with a peeler only 6 star anise 10 cm piece of ginger, thickly sliced 6 garlic cloves, bruised 4 duck Maryland’s (about 300gm each) 1 tbsp Chinese five spice 850 gm (4 cups) duck fat 1 cup fresh bread crumbs 1 tablespoon chopped chives 1 tablespoons chopped parsley Ginger pears  50g honey  100ml red wine vinegar  2 pears quartered  50g honey  1 teaspoon ginger minced  Combine vinegar, honey and ginger in a pot and boil until thick syrup consistency.  Add the pears and toss, cook for 15 minutes or until cooked.

Bacchus lifts the art of fine dining in Brisbane...

Christmas party season, with the opening of a lavish New York inspired restaurant in Southbank’s popular Grey Street precinct.

Brisbane’s A-list bar and restaurant scene has been given a shake-up right at the start of the pre-

amed after the Roman God of food, wine and indulgence, Bacchus is igniting the senses of Brisbane's dining fraternity with its exquisitely designed boutique interiors, Mediterranean inspired menu, a luxurious beverage offering, and fabulous terrace pool and bar concept - making it a one-of-a-kind dining experience in Brisbane.

Bacchus appointed revered Los Angeles designer, Tracy Beckmann to design the project, due to her knowledge and flare for NYC/LA style and design. Her design approach has been to emulate the chic restaurant and bars found at some of the most impressive boutique hotels found in South Beach, California and NYC. The restaurant offers boutique interiors exuding refined extravagance, with beautiful Italian sheer draperies, a huge, custom Capiz Shell chandelier and ceiling lighting, and an assortment of beautiful dining chairs and settees throughout that encourage diners to linger. Central to the interior design cavalry and perhaps one of the most lavish pieces within the venue - is a four and a half metre long onyx marble dining table, inspired by a rare vintage French 1970’s dining table Beckmann found while shopping in NYC. Beckmann said, "Bacchus reflects the timeless and sophisticated design seen in most NYC hot spots, from the custom rosewood dining tables and impressive hanging light fixtures, through to the pool and cabana lounge area." “Going into this project, I wanted to create a space that exuded elegance and glamour, a place where guests can relax and feel special.” she explained.

DESSERT Rydges General Manager, Patrick Lonergan, said the hotel was confident Bacchus would hit the right chord with Brisbane foodies and wine enthusiasts, as well as trendy party goers looking for a new social scene. “The idea behind Bacchus is really an offering that presents the best of everything. “Our sommeliers have developed an extensive wine menu to compliment our Mediterranean menu. “We are quietly confident that these elements, combined with the pool bar experience, cabanas and resident DJ’s will give people everything they want out of a venue,” he said. Bacchus Executive Chef, Dominic Rose says he is looking forward to getting creative with the food offering, which will present an entirely new dining concept for Brisbane. “We have sourced the best olive oils from across the globe – South of France, Spain and Italy. Each oil will be carefully matched to enhance the flavour of its accompanying dish.” Rose travelled to New York City and Los Angeles in July to work alongside renowned Chef Pascal Lorange, of ‘Fig & Olive’ fame, who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe and has cooked for famous entertainers and politicians, including American president Barack Obama. With a menu that reflects Rose's expertise and creativity - diners will remember their dining experience long after they have left the restaurant. Highlights of the menu include Chilli Red Claw Ravioli with leek compote, bisque foam and tempura Red Claw; Duck Breast pan-roasted with beetroot, baby onions, sour cherries, peppered mascarpone, amp and duck sauce ; Panfried Barramundi, vongole ravioli, pea, broad beans and amp artichoke; or try the deconstructed Tiramisu for a dessert with flair. hey’ve been together for 24 years and have three kids – but Eddie Manci only proposed to his girlfriend, Susan Fitzgerald, just two weeks before winning their prize. And before they had even begun to plan their wedding, the lucky bride and groom won the ultimate wedding prize at Lauxes On The Park recently – with 70% off the cost of their entire wedding package. The couple were overjoyed, albeit a tad shell-shocked, with their win. “We are so excited,” gushed Susan. “We love the Broadbeach area and we wanted to get married around here. So when we found out the Lauxes Wedding Expo was on tonight we couldn’t wait to visit. And to be able to have our wedding here now is just amazing.” “I surprised Susan with my proposal in front of family and friends a few weeks ago,” said Eddie. “She didn’t expect it at all, of course as we’ve been together for 24 years, but it just shows long term love can still be full of surprises.” The Ultimate Wedding competition took place at Lauxes On The Park’s inaugural Wedding Expo, which was an outstanding success with over 100 couples enjoying the night. Guests sipped on bubbly and nibbled canapés, whilst mixing with local wedding suppliers, as well as watching a bridal fashion parade. “Weddings are increasing in popularity at Lauxes, and so, the expo was a way to showcase what we do in a fun and relaxed atmosphere,” said Lauxes Manager, Patricia Marull. “Tonight made it easier for couples to see examples of what our weddings can be like and what some of our select companies can do. Eddie and Susan will document and share their wedding journey, such as meeting with suppliers and major planning milestones – until the very big day itself. “But don’t worry” laughs Patricia “ – we’ll stay away from the honeymoon!” In the heart of Broadbeach under Mantra www.lauxes.com.au - info@lauxes.com.au

Symington Family Estates has nine brands in its stable, its most recent acquisition is Cockburn’s, which means they can boast that the combined sales of the family’s Port companies make up over one-third of all premium Port sold globally. Cockburn’s the famous fortified winemaker was established by Scotsman Robert Cockburn in 1815, who returned to Portugal after first visiting the country as a soldier fighting under Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars. It became a major brand of Port in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 2010 Cockburn’s joined Symington Family Estates, which owns over 2,300 acres of vineyards in the Douro Valley, by far the largest vineyard holding in this wine region. Cockburn’s vineyards and four quintas are located in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley; some of the most isolated properties in the region. Quinta Dos Canais is located at an elevated height on a spectacular bend of the river and is the source of Cockburn’s Vintage Port. Definitely a perfect addition to your next dinner party.

All NEW Clover Hill Tasmanian Cuvée... The 2012 release is the first Tasmanian Cuvee, and is based on Pipers River fruit from the 2008, 2007 & 2006 vintages, using all three classic sparkling varieties. Clover Hill Tasmanian Cuvée is crafted according to traditional methods; fermented in its bottle; aged on yeast lees for at least two years, ensuring the vivacity and intensity that is the hallmark of Clover Hill. Made entirely from grapes sourced from Clover Hill’s own vineyards in Tasmania, this new addition has been blended to create a classic Tasmanian sparkling wine, from a region that is recognised for producing world class, cool-climate wines. "Clover Hill was established in 1986 as a sparkling house to rival the great Champagne Houses of France; so, in accordance with the traditional champagne model, we've introduced a non-vintage sparkling to the range." says CEO Adam Torpy, Clover Hill's senior winemaker, Karina Dambergs describes the new Clover Hill Cuvée as a soft, pale lemon colour, an exquisite sparkling wine with lively, persistent bead and gentle, creamy mousse. It has attractive, zesty lemon and citrus flavours complemented by ripe melon and white peach flavours. The palate has a long acid line and soft, aged almond kernel and bread crust characters to add fullness. An elegant sparkling wine displaying the hallmarks of Tasmanian sparkling: ripe fruit flavours and fresh, crisp acid. Available at all good liquor outlets. RRP $29.99

L

ydia and Pamela’s way of working is inseparable from their design ethos and the same principle has been applied to their collaboration with Designer Rugs. For the Coromandel Collection, Pamela and Lydia have drawn on a variety of influences, referencing their travels and rich histories with the culture of India, Africa and Europe, however it is their focus on fabrics and textile techniques that continue to inspire the design process. This second collaboration sees them build on their highly successful first range whilst elaborating more boldly on the themes. "We have continued our exploration of the hand drawn details of chintz textiles,” explain Lydia and Pamela referring to the exotic hybrid style of IndoEuropean chintz design which are both naïve and intricate through colour placement and overmagnified detail. “Our designs take chintz back to its original purpose as sophisticated floor coverings, but the macro focus on tiny fragments gives traditional design a contemporary viewpoint." Expressed in a sensual and exuberant colour palette, each rug in the collection adds luxurious warmth and depth to its surroundings. Arcadia, Fontina, Passion Flower and Splendida are handmade from 100% New Zealand wool and feature a vibrant floral design. Dawning, First Morning and Poppy Field are hand made from New Zealand wool with silk and showcase striking oversized patterns. Falling Water, also hand made from New Zealand wool is ornate and elaborate with a largely smoky chocolate base featuring a tangerine flower, which pops against the intricate white curlicue flourishes. Each rug is a standard size of 200 x 300cm with two rugs with a standard 250cm diameter. They can be custom coloured and sized to suit any commercial or residential space. Internationally Acclaimed Theatrical Production

Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse Gallops Down Under for First Time in 2013… Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse, an innovative multi-media and multi-disciplinary production created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of famed Cirque du Soleil, has announced its debut tour of Australia, with Brisbane playing host to the premiere season next year. “We are thrilled to announce our first ever Australian tour and it is an honor to bring this show, an idea that started in Canada, on the other side of the world, to a country which has such a great affinity with the horse,” said Normand Latourelle, Founder and Artistic Director of Cavalia. “Having travelled half the globe, the art of Cavalia is truly a universal language and we can't wait for Australians to experience its magic.” In Cavalia, horses cavort with the many artists in front of a constantly changing digital background projected onto a 60 metre-wide screen, drawing spectators into dream-like virtual environments. Unlike traditional horse shows, Cavalia’s audience faces a single 50 metre-wide stage which allows the horses space to gallop at full speed, at times running completely free, unfettered by bridles or halters. Cavalia takes place under a white, 2,440-square-metre big top, rising some 35 metres high that gives the horses an ample playground to perform with their trainers and artists. Cavalia’s gleaming White Big Top is the second-largest touring tent in the world – surpassed only by the one housing Cavalia’s sister production, Odysseo. Tickets - For its exclusive season in Brisbane, Cavalia will be presented under its signature White Big Top in the parking lot adjacent to DFO at Brisbane Airport. Priced from $39.00 to $155.00 + applicable taxes and fees. Cavalia opens 6th March, 2013. Tickets for Cavalia, one of the world's most critically acclaimed shows, are on sale now online at www.cavalia.com.au or by calling 1800-765-955

nter the Dalozzo Art Gallery at the Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove, and you enjoy the fruits of Lucette, her husband Louis and daughter Judith all hanging side-by-side. Looking at lucette's portfolio for the first time, one is under the belief that the works presented are the creations of several talented artists. The diverse collections however are the efforts of just one. Explosive abstract art paintings, contemporary mixed media collage art, figurative and oriental art, and her spiritual paintings are just some of the styles you will uncover when you delve into the fine art world of Lucette Da Lozzo.

Lucette captivates us with a mixed medium. Awash with oils, acrylics, ink, drawing, collage, stencilling, and spray paint. This is applied in layers of patterns, shapes, lines and colour. Themes of love, attachment and relationships with those closest to us are worked through. Memory, dream and whimsical imaginary characters combined with the repetitive symbolism of hearts, hands and homes to probe the idea that our internal workings are both complex and tangled and worthy of dissection and examination. Somehow realism exists within fantasy where her contemplative figures and animal life blend magically with their surrounds. Lucette’s naive style of painting

Anthony Garcia

DANIEL CRAIG Returns as James Bond in SKYFALL by Jessica Franks

New Bond girl Bérénice Marlohe

raig is returning for his third film as James Bond, following Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008). And whilst he is keen not to give too many details of the story away that might spoil surprises for the audience, he does reveal that the tone of Skyfall will be different than the previous two films - and that this time there will be a little more humour in amongst the action.

C

we’re allowed to have certain things – like the bad guy’s lair and I’m not giving too much away in saying that. The stuff that everybody used to get so excited about in Bond movies we can allow back in now because there’s been enough time between Austin Powers and Skyfall and enough time between Casino Royale and Skyfall and we had a great script which has funny lines in it. All of those things have evolved. I felt it evolving and I don’t know what it’s going to look like but I feel it’s changed and changed for the better.

Skyfall is a stand-alone story where Bond has to come to the aid of his boss, M (played by Dame Judi Dench) as her past comes back to haunt her and the very existence of MI6 is threatened. Skyfall’s stellar cast includes Javier Bardem as the villain, Silva, Dame Judi Dench returning as M, Bond’s boss at MI6, Ralph Fiennes as Mallory, the chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee, Naomie Harris as MI6 agent Eve, Bérénice Marlohe as the exotically beautiful Sévérine, Albert Finney as Kincade and Ben Whishaw as Q.

Q: There are hallmarks that have endured throughout the Bond films – the beautiful women, the guns, the cars. Are you back in an Aston Martin for this one? A: Yes, the Aston Martin DB5.

Q: Do you think that the character has evolved from Casino Royale through to Skyfall? A: With Casino Royale and Quantum there was a story to tell. And also the great thing is, when I was given the job on Casino, it is the first Bond book and so the conceit was that we went back to the beginning. I was given that chance. And you know, we really got screwed by the Austin Powers thing – the gags and the jokes, the light heartedness – because they exploded all of those gags. And so I had to approach it in kind of a way that I knew, which was to make it as truthful as possible. But – and this may sound arrogant but I promise you it’s true – I always had this idea in my head that I had to start it in a particular way and I wanted it to evolve back into what I think we’ve achieved with Skyfall. We have the old characters again, like Q is back in this and

Q: What’s it like to drive? A: It’s beautiful. It’s a classic car. It’s a little harder to drive than a modern car and it takes a little bit of coaxing but it’s epic and it’s so iconic it’s ridiculous. And we use it; we really use the car in the movie. It does stuff and it’s part of the plot as opposed to just being a nod and a wink to the past. It’s there to do stuff. Q: What were the physical challenges when you were making Skyfall? A: It’s an incredibly physical thing to do these movies. I try and try and stay fit to do them. We have to find ways of making the audience believe it’s me and so I do as much as I can and I’ve got great, amazing stunt guys around me – they are the best there are out there. And they can do amazing things. Like the driving I like to drive but I’m not a racing driver so we have a great guy who comes in and does the driving and makes the car do incredible things and I do the bits that are easier and that’s what movie making is about. SKYFALL is playing in cinemas now.

F Type At last a worthy replacement for the famous E Type Jaguar... PARIS, 26 SEPTEMBER 2012: JAGUAR HAS OFFICIALLY REVEALED THE ALL-NEW F-TYPE AT AN EXCLUSIVE EVENT IN THE GARDENS OF THE MUSÉE RODIN MUSEUM IN PARIS.

The F-TYPE is a continuation of a sporting bloodline stretching back more than 75 years. It encompasses some of the most beautiful, thrilling and desirable cars ever built. Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar said: “Jaguar is a founder member of the sports car segment with a rich sporting bloodline stretching over 75 years, and in the F-TYPE we’ve reignited that flame. attention to detail involved in the F-TYPE’s creation even extended to the development of a new, lighter, aluminium front subframe. Three variants will be available at launch – F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine with all engines featuring stop/start technology to maximise efficiency. The V6 models are joined by a newly developed member of Jaguar’s V8 engine family. Producing 364Kw and 625Nm of torque in the F-TYPE V8 S model, it has an astonishing torqueto-weight ratio of 375Nm/tonne, accelerates to 60mph in 4.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h). The 280Kw V6 F-TYPE S covers the 0-60mph sprint in 4.8 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds) and has an electronically limited top speed of 171mph (275km/h). The 250Kw V6 F-TYPE accelerates to 60mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 161mph (260km/h. An active exhaust system, which is standard on the S and V8 S models, adds another dimension of driver-engagement. Valves in the exhaust system open under load from 3000rpm which allows the exhaust note to build to a thrilling crescendo at the redline. The F-TYPE has a set of eight closely-spaced, sporting ratios in its Quickshift transmission, giving greater driver control. The V6-powered S model also includes a Dynamic Launch feature, which optimises acceleration from rest. The company’s eye to the future is encapsulated in the assertive design language that deliberately challenges preconceptions. Jaguars have always defined sinuous, muscular simplicity and the F-TYPE is no exception, its shape being defined by two ‘heartlines’ forming the front and rear wings Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar said: “A piece of design should tell a story and this is why every line in the F-TYPE has a start, a direction and a conclusion. If you approach every line individually and get it as aesthetically correct as possible, get the dimensions right, it will stand the test of time.” Taking inspiration from the C-X16 concept unveiled in 2011, the front of the F-TYPE features a new interpretation of the bold angular Jaguar grille from which flows the muscular clamshell bonnet with its signature ‘power bulge’. The all important heartline begins its journey in the blade dissecting the sharklike gills on either side of the grille before leading the eye to the top of the front wing, emphasised by the bi-xenon headlamp and integral LED daytime running lights, into the door and towards the rear of the car where it gracefully disappears. Its journey is taken up at this point by the second heartline which swells out to form the muscular rear haunch before sweeping dramatically around the sensual low tail, made possible by the inclusion of an active rear spoiler which deploys at speed to reduce lift by up to 120kg. Full LED rear lamps create a new Jaguar sports car signature by reinterpreting classic cues from the past and, by wrapping around to the trailing edge of the rear wheel-arch, emphasise the powerful stance of the car and its rear-wheel drive sporting potential. The focus on driver involvement and sporting performance in the F-TYPE is emphasised by the ‘one plus one’ layout of the asymmetric cabin. This is evidenced by the grab handle which sweeps down the centre console on the passenger side, delineating it from the driver’s position. Further differentiation is provided by the use of different trim materials either side of the cabin, with a more technical finish on the driver’s side.

Pride of place though goes to the spectacular 1948 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith which stands majestically under the resort’s porte cochere, its condition and sheen belying her 64 years of service. Flanked by the Bayard and the Studebaker, the luxury carriage arguably inspires more intrigue and romance than the others. And it’s easy to imagine that the gleaming Rolls Royce aside, the other cars held pride of place trundling through the streets of Britain, America, Ireland and France during the 1911 Bayard early 1900s, no doubt transporting passengers to the Titanic’s berths in Southampton, Cherbourg and Queenstown. “The 1906 Russell was the second car to be registered in Queensland,” comments Palmer. “The 1904 Renault and the 1914 Fiat are both fantastic specimens in great condition, however the Rolls Royce is truly magnificent. A Passage to India… Gold Coast fashion icon, Bordeaux-born Francoise Esterhazy, has always had a passion for fashion, even though she started her career as a structural engineer. In 1968, when she was just 21years-old, she was posted to the French Embassy in Kathmandu to tutor Nepalese engineers who were travelling to France for post-graduate studies.

I

t was in Nepal that Francoise honed her skills in photography by trekking around the countryside photographing the local people and their brightly hued clothing.

Her underlying passion for fashion saw her collecting antique jewellery and fabrics as she travelled and learning about the skills and crafts of the local people. Here she subsequently fell in love, with a country, with a people, and most importantly - with a culture. It was in Kathmandu, where she met her husband Count Janos Esterhazy, who worked for the Oberoi Hotel - and for the next 13 years of her life as she explained, "I explored; I met, I adventured, I struggled, I laughed... all in the region of India, Nepal and the Himalayas."

…guests would travel on camel back and dine in the middle of nowhere in total luxury

"My interest in antique textiles and old tribal jewellery took me to many remote places, where I met the most amazing people, who were so happy to show me their magnificent craft. It was a truly unforgettable experience to stay in their village and share their life; embroidery was our common ground... and we communicated through stitches!" says Francoise. "Even when I left and settled in Australia in 1981, the love affair still continued, as did my passion of textiles, jewellery and adventure. Even today, I still discover the most interesting places - but now, I do so with the help of local friends that I met 25 years ago!" This is the India that Francoise would love to share with others. Now as well as her many buying trips to India, Francoise has decided to take small, intimate groups of like-minded people with her on personalised tours of the country she knows so well. Her unique tours don’t follow the typical tourist beaten track - but rather follow the road less travelled. Taking in a selection of superb palaces and monuments, and offering insights into the history and heritage gleaned from years of personal travels, and peppered with her knowledge of out of the way places where locals and friends offer another side of the country. This is your opportunity to experience the true essence of the country, whilst enjoying your own adventure by ‘Sharing in My India’. The next proposed trip will be 1st of February 2013 , then another later in the year, in November.

The February 2013 Proposed Itinerary will include: Delhi-Agra( Taj Mahal) then on to the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, where we will try to spot tigers in their natural habitat. A truly emotional experience; then on to Jaipur. As well as visiting the monuments and palaces etc. our group will meet with my locals friends and will have a unique eating and shopping experience. I will also take my guests to the local markets, where I have visited for over 40 years. Another fabulous 'off the tourist track' adventure. Then we'll travel to Jodhpur, an ancient city with the most beautiful fort; also a day in villages to meet rural people and see the local handicrafts, including carpet weaving; and then on to Jaisalmer- my favourite desert city, where you literally step back into the middle ages. We will travel on camel back to see the sunset on the magnificent sand dunes; spend a night in the desert in tents( definitely deluxe). From Jaisalmer to Rohetgarth, where we'll visit a small palace were the Maharajah and his family will receive us; then spend one night as well in the Royal Tents and enjoy a Royal Desert Dinner. This will be just like in ancient time when the Maharajah went hunting, and he and his guests would travel

on camel back and dine in the middle of nowhere in total luxury. Of course, a car can be arranged for anybody not so keen to travel by camel. On the way to the last destination, Udaipur - we will stop in Ranakphur to visit the most beautiful Jain Temple; Udaipur the White City; beautiful palaces on the lake; and then we will fly back to Delhi. We aim to have maximum 8 to 10 people only, as this is a personalised tour. During the trip we will meet my personal friends and extra outing or dinner can happen on the spur of the moment. I have known these friends for many years, and they are always happy to show us more of the real India. This is a proposed itinerary, where we will be staying in heritage hotels (old palaces and Havelis). The cost for the land trip only - Delhi to Delhi - is from $6500 per person, depending on number of guests and choice of hotels. The price includes; transportation, mini bus and flight; hotel breakfasts; full board in some places ( tents and Rohetgarth ); meals are not included in some places - to allow you to freely experience local life by yourself ( if you so desire); all entry to palaces, museums etc are included, as well as a local guide in every city. Anyone interested in joining my February trip should contact me, as we have to book by the 10th of December. For those interested in joining my November Trip, please let me know as soon as possible - as numbers are limited.

The Fraser Coast is where nature comes alive. The Great Sandy Strait between Fraser Island and the mainland is an eclectic mix of marine and coastal wetlands, crystal clear turquoise waters, native woodlands, dense rainforest and a diverse and unbeatable variety of eco and adventure pursuits, plus historical, cultural and lifestyle experiences. The calm protected waters of Hervey Bay, a natural playground for thousands of majestic Humpbacks, are recognised as the world’s best up-close and personal whale watching encounter. The waters are also home to dwarf minke, false killer, southern right and other whale species, as well as rare dolphins, dugongs and six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles, many of which are spotted from on-board Freedom Whale Watch’s power catamaran, during the season which runs from July until November. With 45 the maximum passenger loading and three levels of viewing, the cruise along pristine Fraser Island’s western beaches reveals nature at its best, from dingoes, schooling fish and sea birds to numerous pods of whales. An unforgettable experience is guaranteed. Freedom also does fish and diving charters If you think the Gold Cast is all about heart-pumping theme parks, high rise and sandy beaches, think again. True, it has all those things but it also has a quieter more refined aspect, west of the steel and glass towers. Head to the hinterland hills where the ancient volcanic ridges, national park wilderness, world heritage rainforests, and the mountain-top villages of Mount Tamborine are a breath of fresh air - literally. The main street is jam-packed with galleries, art and craft shops, cafes, a brewery, wine centre and temptations such as fudge and hand-crafted cheese. Get a bird’s eye view of the lush rainforest on the Tamborine Rainforest Walk, which soars 30 metres above the valley. The views are spectacular and the gradual descent gives way to rock pools and waterfalls. Try chocolate liqueur, Moulin Roos absinthe and the lemon myrtle leaf vodka at the internationally awarded Tamborine Mountain Distillery, one of only a handful of privately-owned distilleries in Australia. Michael and Alla Ward use a traditional pot-still and local fruit to produce a range of liqueurs, schnapps and spirits in hand-painted bottles. Stop for a coffee at the Mount Tamborine Coffee Plantation and Gallery Café run by Kees and Maria van Rijssen who recognise the value of the super-rich soil, as does Meredith Morris, owner of Witches Chase Cheese Company who sources all her milk from a herd of local jersey cows. Last stop for the day is Witches Falls Winery cellar door where winemaker Abbey Nicholas could tempt you with a tipple of pinot noir.

hen it comes to the essence of Noosa style, it doesn’t get much better than this. Nestled beside the Noosa National Park and Lake Weyba, only three kilometres from sun-drenched beaches is a getaway par excellence. Noosa Springs is a sanctuary satisfying all tastes, whims and needs. Golfers share Australia’s premier 18-hole Graham Papworth-designed championship golf course with kangaroos, and hopefully the cacophony of birdsong doesn’t interfere when concentrating on a vital putt. A relaxing stroll from the Clubhouse near the first fairway, are luxury open plan, full equipped apartments with two or

three bedrooms and private balconies. Lift the heart rate with the latest work-out gear in the neighbouring fitness centre, take the plunge into the heated swimming pool, walk along the tracks to the edge of the lake or grab a partner for a hit of tennis. Sumptuous is holistic-speak for the Spa. Inspired by the ancient bath houses of Europe whilst incorporating the ultimate new world facilities, highly trained therapists are devoted to providing massage, beauty and relaxation rituals to ‘untie’ the knots, soothe the soul, reveal a plumped and smooth skin, and moreover give a pamper experience like no other. Therapeutic experiences include feeling the joy of weightlessness as you stare at the ‘stars’ and feel aches and pains disappear in the floatation pool; shivering back to normal in the blitz shower after the infra-red sauna and steam room; and in-between times oohing and aahing as various massage jets hit the spot in the immense and extraordinary hydro massage pool. For those wishing to take indulgence to a new high, various packages include a spa high tea, the glamorous girlfriend double; a couple’s retreat; and half day spa escapes. Oh and did I mention some include champagne with a fruit and cheese platter served in the relaxation lounge? What a beautiful reward after selflessly undergoing hours of metime! After such spa-liciousness, it’s time to get the taste buds into gear over lunch al fresco at Relish Restaurant. which has spectacular views over the golf course. Head chef Aden Moriarty’ s take on modern Australian fare is influenced by the flavours of the Mediterranean and Asia, focuses on local produce where possible and is cleverly executed. Not surprising given New Zealand-born Aden’s pedigree and background. shiitake mushrooms, bok choy and daikon cake; crispy Bangalow pork belly; and what has become a signature dish, the molten centre Belgium chocolate pudding with hokey pokey icecream. The special, called cocktail hour was a twist on the 70’s prawn cocktail all dressed up with ruby grapefruit and the blue swimmer crab salad with chargrilled sweet corn, avocado, semidried cherry tomatoes, endive and tomato vinaigrette was as pretty as a picture. Both entrees were delectable and like everything on the menu were generous to a fore. Grilled yellow fin tuna with a minted snow peas, green beans, shaved radish and shallot salad plus white anchovies and salsa verde drizzled around the plate seemed like ambitious flavour combos but they worked so well, as did the Mooloolaba prawn linguini with garlic, cherry tomatoes, preserved lemon, basil, spinach and Bounty extra virgin olive. After such a repast, cheeses and desserts, although tempting were given the swerve (well almost) opting instead for affogato with house made ice-cream, biscotti and excellent coffee. ure you can’t forget the beautiful uncrowded north-facing Laguna Bay, catching a wave off Tea Tree in the national park, spotting koalas and rare glossy black cockatoos, exploring the lush hinterland, messing about on a boat or paddle board on the Noosa River, learning to kite surf, being pampered at day spas that rival the world’s best or, chillaxing to the max in an over-sized suite or apartment after indulging at numerous eateries which cater to all tastes and where local produce is inevitably the hero. But what about shopping I hear you say. Well, Noosa is right on-trend and retail therapy doesn’t get any better. Not in department stores or big shopping malls – they’re non-existent. There are shopping precincts per se which certainly are not to be sneezed at and are must-check-outs, however the real story, the not-so-hidden-secret-anymore areas are found around the Junction, Noosa Marina, in pockets along Gympie Terrace, on Gibson Road and Gateway Drive which are all in Noosaville, plus Sunshine and Peregian Beaches where village-like atmospheres exist. And of course there’s famous Hastings Street which exudes an air of sophistication with a good measure of casual beachside chicness. What’s on the list? How about artworks and local crafts, courtesy of the region's thriving art scene. Try the publicly owned Noosa Regional Gallery in Pelican Street, Tewantin and myriad private galleries from Hastings Street and Gympie Terrace to Eumundi. The township is also famous for its markets where you might just discover an artist of tomorrow, clothes, accessories and jewellery created by talented designers plus one-off handcrafts, homewares, souvenirs and gifts for every age and home. And in the case of jams, spice mixes and condiments – there’s palate pleasers everywhere. Peregian Beach, about 15 minutes from Noosa, is blessed with wickedly wonderful homewares and funky fashion boutiques for him, her and kids who are into mini-me boho threads. Find fabulous tribal beads at Timbuktu to Kathmandu, with artefacts, ceramics and weavings from Africa and the sub-continent. For serious shoppers and casual window-shoppers alike, treelined Hastings Street is fave-rave boutique heaven. While affordable swimwear and the latest fashions are available in one store, the next offers exclusive brands and one-off pieces by local and national designers. From French and Italian imports, young, funky beach wear including the hottest swimwear labels to surf gear at five-time Australian longboard champ Josh Constable’s Noosa Longboards shop. Look for the Woodie parked outside. Makes a great photo opportunity. Many beauty products are made locally and attuned to the sub-tropical climate, while jewellery options will take your breath away from bling for all occasions and must-have everything at Secrets to diamonds and gemstones hand crafted by multi-award-winning jewellers. Hot off the press for shopaholics is the news about late night trading to 8pm every Saturday on Hastings Street. What a bonus. Most of the independent traders who feature art, jewellery, exclusive clothing, resort wear, T-shirts, homewares, beauty products, games, books, souvenirs, post cards, novelties, sweet delights and handmade gift items will be open. So, plenty to browse and buy before celebrating with drinks or over dinner. Noosa is also known as one of Queensland's fun places with popular events such as the Noosa Triathlon, Noosa Festival of Surfing, Noosa International Food & Wine Festival and the Noosa Long Weekend staged annually. But with so much on offer, you don't need an excuse to visit sunny-allyear-round Noosa for holidays. Writer: Helen Flanagan

Photographer: Keoki Flagg Emotional Pat Farmer plants Red Cross flag at South Pole..

They said he’d never make it... They were wrong! AN INCREDIBLE TREK FROM THE NORTH POLE TO THE SOUTH POLE - PAT FARMER IN THEORY, RAN TWO MARATHONS EACH DAY - FOR ALMOST A YEAR; OVER 13,000 MILES THROUGH 14 COUNTRIES IN A RACE TO RAISE $100 MILLION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS.

I

n January, Australian ultra runner, Pat Farmer raised the Red Cross flag at the South Pole after the greatest run in history. Inevitably, there was a glitch, for nothing great is ever easy. Pat’s support vehicle with his guide and supplies broke down an agonising 8 km from the Pole, so Pat abandoned the crew, and ran on alone to the Pole, where he broke down with emotion and then planted the white flag with the big red cross in the ice at the very bottom of the world. Pat then sat in a tent at the US base, with his feet in warm water, drinking a bottle of champagne. He spoke to his children, Brooke and Dillon and spent time replaying the entire experience in his head with an enormous feeling of deep satisfaction. “I’ve endured a lot on this run, but the people of Africa and East Timor and South America who have no clean water or have been victims of flood, earthquake, fire and famine do it very tough too” said Pat. In his mission to raise funds for the Red Cross, Pat set out from the North Pole in early April 2011, and ran through Canada, the United States, Central America and South America to his final destination in Antarctica, the South Pole. The 21,000 km epic trek saw Pat brave -40 degree Polar region snow blizzards, become lost in the blazing deserts of Peru, dodge polar bears, snakes, crocodiles, armed bandits and rogue militias, and narrowly miss being wiped out by an out-of-control truck. Running an incredible average 80km every day - with no days off - he has suffered dehydration, stress injuries and pushed through unimaginable pain.

“This run will take a toll on my body for as long as I live,” he says, “but every step, every frustration, and every moment when I’ve considered, but rejected the thought of lying down and not running another kilometre, has been worth it. Running long distances is my gift, my way of making a difference. The money I raise by inspiring people from all over the planet to donate to Red Cross clean water and sanitary projects in the third world will save lives. I’m asking all Australians to dig deep and support this exceptionally important work” Red Cross CEO, Robert Tickner says, “Pat Farmer is an inspiration to all humanity. Red Cross is extremely proud and grateful to have a supporter like Pat Farmer who has given his all in an amazing feat of physical courage and endurance to raise awareness and funds for water and sanitation projects around the world.” Pat’s Pole to Pole run, however, was not quite over. Pat had to cut short his run through Chile and Argentina to make the last flight to the Antarctic in time to reach the South Pole before worsening conditions there made running impossible. He then flew from the Pole back to where he stopped running in Puerto Montt, Chile, and then embarked on the final leg of his run, 2,500 km down to Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego, at the bottom tip of the Americas, to finish his run. Then, he says, “I’m going home to be with my children Brooke and Dillon in Sydney, rest up at the beach and have that meat pie with potatoes I’ve dreamed about.”
