WELCOME TO OUR WONDERFUL BRONZE ISSUE OF LUXURY QUEENSLAND STYLE MAGAZINE...
My favourite season - Winter. h to live in S.E. Queensland now that Winter's here. Almost every day the sun shines. If you're on holidays or living life to the fullest - you can laze on the beaches each day taking in the beautiful blue water and softly crashing waves, before dining al fresco at one of the many fabulous restaurants and cafes. You can wander around the boutiques checking out the latest designer fashions, or visit one of the beautiful interior design showrooms, whilst anticipating the latest colours, lighting and furniture offerings that will help you to reinvent the overall look of your home or apartment. Even if you're still part of the workforce, you can enjoy the season, as you drive along the shoreline on your way to - or home from, the office. Just looking out the window at the beautiful sky brings a smile to your lips. At night, you can cuddle up under the doona with a glass of hedonistic red wine, muscat or port (with or without company) and read your copy of LUXURY Style, your new book, or watch a good movie; maybe your favourite chef will be on television cooking up a storm and inspiring fabulous culinary inspirations. Over the past few years celebrity chefs have made their mark on the social fabric of our lives. As a society, we have never been so interested in fresh, wholesome and inventive food preferably created by a personable chef, who is more than happy to pass on a few secrets of the trade. Channel Ten's Master Chef has proved the point. Move over Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay and the like - now we want to see 'real' cooks in the kitchen. Master Chef was a surprise winner in the audience stakes. It may have started out a little slowly, but momentum built and we were hooked. It became almost compulsive watching. Hands up those who didn't tune in to see which of the home cooks would take out the overall prize. Maybe we didn't all agree with the final winner - but technically, it was another 'game show' - so you had to play the game and eventually, someone had to win. All the contestants seemed to have a fabulous time, and the highlight for me was their trip to Hong Kong - where poor Julie had to catch and kill her own fish. Better her than me! I could never have accomplished that task. And, if she does open her restaurant on the mid-coast, we will definitely drive down to sample her dishes. In keeping with our food lust, this issue we bring you a bountiful array of food and wine, wonderful chefs and spectacular ideas to build upon in your own kitchen. We also bring you the latest plays, arts, books, theatre - interesting people and places, motoring magic and perfect properties.

Living waterfalls EXQUISITE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR WATER FEATURES
ADD STYLE, TRANQUILLITY AND ELEGANCE TO YOUR HOME, GARDEN OR BUSINESS Waterfalls with their attractive qualities of the sight and sound of rippling water inside home and commercial environments are to become increasingly popular. Living Water Designs waterfalls feature water cascading down mirror, glass or stainless steel in completely self-contained and custom-designed surrounds, made from materials such as stainless steel, powder-coated, aluminium, granite, timber and acrylic. Lighting options enhance the effects of the reflections as the water flows and waves down a flat or curved surface. Living Water Designs builds these custom features on the Gold Coast in Queensland, to any size, shape, colour and with a high quality finish. They then can be delivered and installed where necessary. The waterfalls come in two main styles - home/commercial dĂŠcor pieces and inbuilt water-walls and water-windows for internal fit-outs. No major electrical or plumbing requirements. Environmentally beneficial as these waterfalls help filter airborne pollutants. They are most importantly leak-proof and splash-free.

Runway to the stars N e w Yo r k F a s h i o n W e e k a n d B r i s b a n e ’s M e r c e d e s Benz Fashion Festival are premier fashion events where the hot frocks of tomorrow are shown off by a fantastical fashionista duo. he ever-designing Italian-born Nick Scalisi and his Canadian-born wife, Ilona Karme-Scalisi are former New Yorkers and no strangers to being at the pinnacle of the fashion industry, having shown their former US label Cheap Thrill at New York Fashion Week. The label was much sought after by mega stars such as Madonna, Christine Aguilera Susan Sarandon, Gwen Stefani, regularly used in sitcoms such as Friends and Dharma and Greg as well as numerous movies, TV shows and music videos. Nick and Ilona met in New York City in 1996. Nick was a designer of both men’s and women’s fashion with offices in Los Angeles and New York. After completing her schooling at UCLA with BA in Economics and Liberal Arts and Fashion Centre, LATTC, with AA in Fashion Design, Ilona became a model and swimwear designer with Sirena of California and Anne Klein Swimwear. She designed for top California women’s label La Belle and created her own children’s wear label, Widgin Originals. Together they went on to establish Karmic Niche with several labels and world wide distribution, plus create sassy corporate uniforms and apparel lines for Disney and the Universal Studios’ brand, House of Blues. After 9/11 the couple opted for a serious sea-change to Australia, the country that Nick had never visited, but had been Ilona’s second home since her childhood years, when her mother had moved to Port Douglas from Vancouver. They left behind a major fashion career and now call Australia, more specifically Sunrise Beach near Noosa, their home. It is also
T
their design studio where sketching and pattern perfection is accomplished for their label Tulipani which means ‘tulip’ in Italian and is Ilona’s favourite flower. Conceived in 2004, the label evolved from a desire to create sexy, edgy designs to appeal to Australian women seeking fashion that can take them from work to lunch, drinks, after five…wherever Nick’s original artwork prints feature heavily each collection, Ilona has an incredible eye for detail and pattern-making, both work together to create pieces that are distinctive, and all the cutting and sewing plus most of the fabric printing, is proudly manufactured in south-east Queensland. Fabrics are imported from all over the world including Italy, France, USA, New Zealand and Peru. Tulipani Nero, their evening wear range which was launched at Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in 2008, has the same rock and roll edge as Tulipani, and makes use of Nick’s quirky artwork and Ilona’s flattering silhouettes.

Apart from Nick’s signature prints, both ranges continue to win fans courtesy of a skilful use of cut and drape with beautiful fabrics and unusual combinations. Nick is adamant that at a time when most Australian designed garments are being manufactured overseas, it is more important than ever before to fly the Australian flag. “Fashion is the fibre of any community and we believe there can be a fashion-led economic recovery if only people think before they buy a garment.” Ilona concurs: “Everyone from the designer to the sales agent, manufacturer and the independent retailer plays a part in this process. Seeking and buying only Australian designed and manufactured fashion labels not only stimulates the fashion economy, it benefits the wider economy. And it’s not about sacrificing style – far from it. If anything, it’s the perfect opportunity to be more individual with your personal style. Plus the end product is of a higher standard and is better reflection of our lifestyle and climate.” The emphasis is on elegant casual for the 2009 spring/summer collection with inspiration from the ocean and the latest cotton metal poplins contrasting with silks and jerseys “Elegant casual is so much a part of the Australian lifestyle,” comments Nick and Ilona whose daughter Tatiana is nearly 11. “This collection includes great pieces which can be coordinated to obtain just this effect, all with a splash of colour for added impact. We wanted to make essential wardrobe pieces for a pictureperfect endless summer. “With these garments, everything has been perfectly finished on the inside and we have used a lot of French seaming,” says co-designer Ilona. “The fabrics are soft to the touch but almost sculptural in the way that they ply the body, creating a sort of shabby chic effect. The pieces look lived in from the moment you put them on. “The cotton metal pieces layer beautifully with the collection’s tencel lycra jersey knits or silk kimono tops. Or for a show-stopping effect, team with a midriff corset.” This season the pair revisits the nautical theme in their special way, by blending colours and forms and using indigo striped cotton that washes down like a favourite pair of jeans.

For the original print fabrications, Nick has drawn inspiration from sketches in a journal he kept while travelling around the Caribbean and Mexico some years ago. The result is whimsical, abstract and individual. The dress is still strong this season either short and flirty or long and sexy, with comfort and allure being the keys to the collection.“Silhouettes are straight, almost minimalist, and the knit tops offer an ease of fit without sacrificing sexiness or impact,” describes Nick, adding the Tulipani ranges are stocked in 65 outlets throughout Australia including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Cairns. For the third year in a row Ilona and Nick have been invited to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane which runs from 23 to 28 August and is a key event for designers and retailers, providing a boost in potential sales. Tulipani will be starring alongside other fashion luminaries such as Easton Pearson, Juli Grbac, Rebecca Manning swimwear and Colin Heaney.“The 15 looks on the runway are from the Tulipani Nero collection of after-five wear and will have an emphasis on black and white, maybe with silver, a splash of pale pink or a play on champagne,” says an excited Nick, who loves the freedom and slower pace of Noosa, not having the distractions of frenetic New York and taking time out to enjoy a glass of Pinot Grigio with his “sexiest pasta,” a spaghettini with chilli, purple garlic, walnuts, frilly parsley and a splash of lime juice.

Senka Thwaites
Spoilt for choice... wenty years ago in Perth, Senka began her retail career. After working in various stores she opened her own shop in the Margaret River called Memories. It looked like an upmarket mini department story, its best sellers were expensive yet very affordable jewellery, handbags and sunglasses and during her eight year tenure, she won a Telstra award for small business and the seed to success was well and truly sown. “You spoil me Senka” became such an oft-used phrase, that ‘Spoilt’ seemed a logical brand name, so was trade marked. After four months of ‘me-time’ in Noosa, Senka, master builder hubby Darin, sons Adam and Brandon, and two poodles Mocha and Latte, her “stress relievers”, made the bold move to the east coast. “Wholesaling is totally different to retail but I dabbled in it years ago and imported various items, mostly jewellery. I started out of a small warehouse in Noosaville and it grew quickly so after three years I now have two warehouses based in the funky area of Gateway Drive.

When it comes to dynamism, super savvy Senka Thwaites has bags of it.
“I import mainly from China, but have jewellery and accessories from Hong Kong, pearls from Spain, Swarovski crystal jewellery from Korea and Paris, wallets from Japan and winter bags from India.” Senka is hands-on with all aspects of her products, especially handbag design. “We have a factory in China and a member of staff looks after quality control. Too many wholesalers buy off the shelf and it all becomes very similar, plus it’s a very cut throat industry.” Spoilt products are distributed to 600 stores nationally and in New Zealand, a resort in Brunei and a fashion store in London, plus her first concept store in Noosaville. Senka is aiming for a Spoilt concept shop in every major shopping centre in Australia. Her current estimate of lines is about 350 in jewellery, leather handbags, fashion handbags, shoes and evening bags. “I have the best value for money handbags in the market because I go for turnover not huge profits. They look expensive but are so affordable.”

CLOTHES THAT TRAVEL WITH YOU
18
Queensland LuxuryStyleLiving
THE DESIGNER ela began her career winning five Australian Fashion Industry Awards, for Lifestyle Fashion. After twenty five years as a fashion designer Mela has spent the last seven years developing a collection of ‘Clothes that Travel with You’ Time restraints of modern living led her to believe that a core wardrobe of comfort basics was an essential to help today’s woman get going each day. ‘As an individual I love to accessorize. I was looking for quality, well cut basics to give me a platform for individual style while working, on vacation or enjoying time with my family’. Mela was tired of tight, clinging, clothes in unflattering shapes. She began the search for a perfect transeasonal knit that skimmed and felt sensual against her skin. Her solution was matte jersey, a yarn that was comfortable, versatile and luxurious.
M
fashion winter fashion style
The active Australian lifestyle and long destination travel requirements inspired Mela to develop a range that would ‘shrink her travel bag and make dressing easy’. The matte jersey cloth gave Mela the basics she needed. Today her highly sought after jersey essentials have evolved to offer core and highlight styles for all occasions. ‘I believe in making the old new and the new familiar. Style is about the woman who wears the clothes. I offer an evolving range of core and statement pieces that grow with your needs. Nothing is a huge surprise requiring a complete fashion makeover, rather, a subtle addition to your personal wardrobe giving you the opportunity to express a new season silhouette’. ‘Fashion should be easy; nothing should be too hard to understand. Layering is the key and comfort is so important for today’s woman’.
Mela has a huge following in Australia, where the active lifestyle has challenged the designer to develop her line to incorporate accessories, coordinating knits and laces giving women of all ages and sizes a complete wardrobe that she calls ‘anywhere style for anytime chic’. The range is highly sought after by travelers and visitors to Australia and has led a rapidly expanding market across the globe. The collection and essentials are available all year and follows the simple philosophy of layering for all occasions. NUTS:
Natures own vitamin pill..
health
NUTS ARE JAM PACKED WITH NATURAL GOODNESS. THEY ARE NATURE’S VERY OWN VITAMIN PILL, AND CAN BE HIGHLY BENEFICIAL TO YOUR HEALTH, NO MATTER WHAT AGE YOU ARE.

Queensland LuxuryStyleLiving
School aged children: Some children are allergic to nuts and many schools are ‘nut free zones’. But for kids without allergies, nuts make the perfect after school snack or a fun addition to any weekend outing. Nuts are highly satisfying, so giving children just a handful of mixed nuts after school will curb those cravings for chips and chocolate, tiding them over till dinner. Growing bodies need energy and protein, and nuts provide both - along with loads of nutrients needed for a healthy balanced diet. So if you can’t get those vitamin pills down – try nuts. Twenties: Why waste money on lotions and potions, when vitamins and minerals can keep you looking fab. Think beauty from within. The vitamins and nutrients found in nuts may help those in their twenties stay looking young and feeling great. Almonds, for example, are a great source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that may help keep skin youthful by protecting against free radical damage. Thirties and Forties: When people reach their thirties and forties, they begin to think more about their health. Factors such as calcium intake, cholesterol levels, and other health risks
take a higher priority. As nuts are a great all rounder, people in their thirties and forties can appreciate the benefits nuts have for the immune system, nerve and muscle function, and their role in developing strong healthy bones. Fifty Plus: With cardiovascular disease (CVD) the leading cause of death in Australia, particularly for older men and women after menopause, (accounting for 34% of all deaths in Australia in 2006,) eating nuts may provide some protection against CVD. Nuts contain healthy unsaturated fats, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, and these can help lower blood LDL cholesterol - plus, nuts provide essential Omega-3 fatty acids and according to a growing body of evidence, are key to weight management . A range of studies has found that those who enjoy a handful of nuts daily, significantly lower their risk of heart disease and lower their cholesterol. For more information on the health benefits of nuts and/or for tasty nut recipes for all occasions please visit www.nutsforlife.com.au

Obsessed by beauty STARTING A BEAUTY THERAPY COURSE IN HOBART IN 1992 KYLIE SULMAN OWNER OF AMARANTE BEAUTY & NAIL LOUNGE HAS BEEN TOTALLY OBSESSED WITH THE NAIL AND BEAUTY INDUSTRY EVER SINCE. “I had my own business in Hobart for 3 years which I started at the age of 17 and run for 3 years before selling and moving north to the sunny Gold coast. I worked with a variety of amazing salons and learned so much from the people I worked with over the next 3 years, which was fantastic but still had that burning desire for my own salon again”. Kylie said. “I opened my next business in Paradise Point which proved to be extremely successful. After 7 years I had an opportunity to import one of the leading nail care products in the world into Australia, so I decided to give it a go. I sold my salon and went to Los Angeles to train with the owner of Young Nails, Greg Salo”. Kylie added. “This was the most amazing experience of my life, Greg changed my attitude, my passion and my goals, I never thought I would be able to achieve the success I have experienced over the past 3 years with Young Nails. I have travelled nationally training and educating Nails Technicians, developed our national education programs, and worked in Trade shows all over Australia and also recently in Las Vegas at the international beauty show”. Kylie still had the desire for another salon! So Amarante Beauty and Nail Lounge, at Hope Island was born. Kylie said “I am so excited about working with our products in salon, and putting into practice our systems and procedures, from our Young Nails services in Acrylic, and gel to our new Lomasi disposable Pedicure systems, disposable cartridge waxing, and of course our dermalogica skin care treatments, with our large range of facial equipment from galvanic skin care treatments to diamond microdermabrasion, ultra sonic treatments that increase product penetration by 10,000 times and the latest from the USA the LED skin rejuvenation treatments”. After searching the world for the best, now Amarante are presenting you with an opportunity to come and experience the difference.

Breast feeding.. Taking time to make it right... Breastfeeding can be a special bonding experience shared by mother and baby, but like any new skill it can take time to master. he new Queensland Health breastfeeding campaign, 12+ months on the breast, aims to help mums prevent or overcome many of the barriers to successful breastfeeding and support them to feed for longer. The most common problems mothers face are attachment and latching difficulties, perceived low milk supply, engorged breasts, sore cracked nipples and mastitis. Worrying about how much milk their baby is receiving is a common concern as many women find it hard to gauge exactly how much milk is being provided. Good signs are an alert and happy baby, at least 6 heavily wet nappies a day, feeding 6-12 times a day and appropriate growth for baby’s age. While it is very rare for a woman to be unable to produce enough milk, supply can be boosted by increasing the frequency of feeds. Eating a range of healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, and getting adequate rest will also contribute to increasing supply, while supplementary feeding with formula will reduce it. Swollen, tender, uncomfortable and full breasts are a natural symptom for women in the days following birth and should subside within a few days. Ways to alleviate the discomfort include wearing a supportive, well-fitted bra, breastfeeding often and applying cold packs to breasts after each feed. Another common problem is sore or cracked nipples, usually a result of the baby not attaching properly. To assist

with position, latching and detachment, detailed information and illustrations are featured in the campaign guide. Smearing expressed breast milk onto nipples after feeding, wearing breathable natural fabrics, and regularly changing breast pads will help the nipples to heal, however it is important to seek help from a health professional if this problem persists. Mastitis can be caused when blocked milk ducts in the breast become inflamed or infected and also needs immediate attention by a doctor. To help treat mastitis, continue to breastfeed often or express, massage any lumpy areas while breastfeeding and apply heat packs to the breasts before feeds. To avoid mastitis, good attachment in addition to getting plenty of rest and eating a variety of healthy foods is vital. The more run down, stressed and exhausted you are, the more vulnerable you are to an infection. To ensure a happy and comfortable feed for both mother and baby, how baby is positioned and attached to the breast is important. While there is no correct position to breastfeed, it needs to be comfortable and pain free so mum and bub can both relax and enjoy the experience. Breastfeeding for as long as possible gives babies the best possible start in life. With the correct advice, support and a little time, breastfeeding can become an easy and enjoyable activity. You can get a breastfeeding guide through Queensland antenatal clinics, or online at http://health.qld.gov.au/breastfeeding/ You can also call the Australian Breastfeeding Association Breastfeeding Helpline 1800 mum 2 mum (1800 686 2 686), or 1800 686 2 68 to VoIP phones for advice and support day or night.

13 years in the UK.“We built fires on the beach, catch fish and cook them on corrugated iron sheets, ripped off from roofs in cyclones, and baked potatoes in the coals. “When I finished school in Perth I got a job on Rottnest Island for the summer. I loved it so much (sun, surf, girls, etc), I got a job as a kitchen hand – the perfect scenario of surf-workpub.” And so began Ben’s culinary journey. Cooking became his passion and a reflex and it never ceases to give him pleasure or stimulate his imagination. He unequivocally believes that food should be simple and distinctive, technically and culturally correct. After working in a number of top class Australian restaurants, Ben moved to London in May 1996 on his 26th birthday. For four years he worked at The River Café.“This was the most inspirational place I’ve ever had the pleasure to work. The genius of Rose Gray and Ruthie Rodgers, their ideas, philosophy and approach to Italian food provided the backbone for my own style of cooking,” recalls Ben who started at the River Café a few days after Jamie Oliver. He later joined mate Jamie at the exclusive Monte's Club as head chef, was a consultant and food stylist to him, cooked for Tony Blair and the Italian Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street and around the time of taking control of the Atlantic Bar and grill in Piccadilly, considered one of the finest dining rooms in Great Britain, he and wife De-arne celebrated the birth of Ruby who is now six and has been joined by siblings Herb and Cash. His television credits include four series of the internationally acclaimed food and travel program, Surfing the Menu; he was the food judge for LifeStyle Food’s recent Great BBQ Challenge series; has appeared on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and Planet Food; and most recently the series of The Best in Australia. He writes regular food columns including delicious magazine. His current cookbook, Ben’s Barbecue, published by Hardie Grant is just perfect for Father’s Day or a Christmas present for your favourite male.. In Europe I was known as arana which is a South American Indian word for ‘excellent fruit’. The name ‘pineapple’ was first recorded in England in the late 17th century. The Portuguese introduced it to India in the 16th century and Lutheran missionaries from India brought it to Australia. It’s an excellent source of Vitamin C, small quantities of other vitamins and minerals. Place this mixture in the bottom of the cake pan. Arrange the pineapple rings on
the brown sugar mixture in a decorative pattern (be creative). Set the pan aside. Stir together the flour, salt, white sugar and self raising flour. Separate the eggs. Beat the whites until stiff but not dry. Beat the egg yolks until lemony yellow. Whip the egg whites. Stir in the remaining pineapple juice, vanilla and remaining melted butter. Add this mixture to the flour mixture. Gently fold in the egg whites. Pour batter over the top of the brown sugar and pineapple rings. Bake at 160c for 30-40 minutes. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes then cover pan tightly with a serving dish and invert so that the pineapple side is up. To serve: Serve on cake stand or as individual wedges. Drizzle passionfruit syrup over and serve with a dollop of double cream, ice cream or both. Variation: Add 100g of chopped crystalised ginger folded into the batter at the end or omit passionfruit and have just pineapple

General Manager Chris Northam has invited Ben to create a brilliant dinner showcasing his favourite seafood, for one night only Saturday 15th August. Ben first came to Australia's attention through his ‘Surfing The Menu’ series with co-host Curtis Stone, but Londoners had discovered him years before, when he headed some of the cities finest restaurants, including the famous River Café (where he first cooked with Jamie ‘naked chef’ Oliver before going on to style Jamie’s first two books). He was also head chef at the multi-award winning Hyatt Carlton Towers in Knightsbridge and Atlantic Bar and Grill in Piccadilly – one of Great Britain’s most brilliant eateries. Well, we may have been slow to recognise Ben initially, but we are making up for lost time now - with his newest show ‘The Best’ - Australia rating brilliantly. Ben spends his spare time writing his inspirational cook books (he’s up to number five) with his latest Outdoors being re-released soon. A VEXATIOUS GLOBAL FINANCIAL CLIMATE DID NOT INTIMIDATE BRIDGET AND DUGALD WOODS’ DREAM OF OPENING AN EDGY-STYLE INNER-CITY HOTEL THAT WOULD APPEAL TO THOSE TRAVELING ON A BUDGET FOR BUSINESS, PLEASURE OR BOTH. hotel was never an alien idea for the Woods. Dugald was running a backpacker’s establishment and his brother Andrew and wife Georgina had set up Brisbane’s famous Tinbilly’s backpackers’ accommodation. It was a runaway success so much so, Dugald and Bridget moved to Brisbane and together it became a family-run affair. In 2006 the couple became the sole owners. Tinbilly’s reputation as a safe and clean hostel with excellent service and the crazy Tin Bar, went on to achieve world-wide recognition.

The quaint former Astor private hotel in Astor Terrace Spring Hill, had faded from glory to a home for the homeless, when developers Rick Bird and Scot Hutchinson saw its potential and approached the couple. “We felt the location wasn’t right for a backpacker’s hostel, so asked if they’d reconsider the concept of a hotel,” says Bridget who acknowledged that the original plans differed greatly from the end result. The exterior design by Cottee Parker Architects was in place before they came on board, the builders were Hutchinson, Dugald designed the bar and restaurant and Bridget used her interior design skills on the 84 standard queen and twin rooms, executive king rooms and two suites. “We wanted the four-star Portal to be swanky yet affordable and totally focused on service plus provide an alternative to the larger chain hotels, which lack personality,” explains Bridget who went to great lengths to ensure all inclusions were above par, especially the

mattresses which were trialed and retrialed before deciding on a super comfortable sprung mattress with a latex top. “The compact stylish rooms are equipped with the latest in-room technology such as ipod docking stations and ibahn, which has 30 plus movies on selection and a database of 10,000 songs. “We understand the importance of a day spa or gymnasium for guests however with space limitations we had to think outside the square. Dugald and I enjoy exercise and know it’s a great way to start the day. With the Portal’s proximity to the beautiful Roma Street Parklands, we offer the services of a trainer so guests can enjoy the outdoors and train at the same time. “Regarding massages, I’d contacted Ripple a few years ago as a gift for Dugald. He was so impressed with the professionalism, Ripple ‘the day spa that comes to you’, was the obvious choice to recommend to our guests who can enjoy various massages, also beauty treatments and even a body rub with warmed chocolate oil. Surely that’s the ultimate pamper for chocoholics.” The O Bar and Restaurant have been given a different look and vibe so
guests feel as though they’ve totally left the hotel, With its street-front bar it’s also a magnet for the inner city set. “Throughout the building process, we were a little nervous as Dugald had all the plans for the restaurant in his head and very little on paper. The interior’s soaring hand-cut dry stone walls were chosen to create warmth and comfort and make solo travelers feel at home. The striking red cement floor has five coats of resin and the lights, which we’ve been told are shades of Gaudi and Barcelona, were created by a local sculptor from Dugald’s brief.” Head chef Anthony Baker, with a stellar track record, Portal Hotels including Brisbane’s Novotel, Conrad Treasury, and Dugald Woods Hamilton Island’s Mariners and Romano’s restaurants, has been receiving plaudits for his use of superior ingredients in modern Australian dishes such as roasted lamb rack with celeriac puree, caramelised king brown mushroom and rocket jam; curried kingfish, spiced pear chutney, hung yogurt and garlic pappadams; green tea -pressed pork belly with pan-seared scallops, fennel, chilli caramel and agrie doux; and lemon, ricotta and parsley risotto with shaved fresh winter truffle. Tapas for two includes New Zealand oysters, sand crab terrine, scallops and vodka-cured trout; and ‘Coat of Arms’ with lemon myrtle emu carpaccio, salt-baked kangaroo fillet with lillypilly preserve and Vegemite damper. Breakfast and lunch are served everyday; dinner is Monday to Friday and the evenings are also popular for bar-flys and wine aficionados. General manager Dallas Bickle says since the Portal was officially opened by the gregariously indomitable Lyndey Milan and young James Smith, aka James Corona - the tall tenor, gave a brilliant rendition of Nessun Dorma, visitors have stayed from as far away as London, LA and China, there have been city slickers, some from the burbs of Brisbane and many from the regional areas of Queensland. Andrew and Georgina, financial whizzes and fellow entrepreneurs, are also involved in the business with the super energetic duo. Bridget is also the operations manager as well as a busy mum to Angus 8, Ethan 7, Hamish 5 and Claudia 9 months. “Until a few months ago Claudia was bought up in the hotel, in the store room out the back,” says Bridget who doesn’t live on site as the boys love the outdoors and they have no understanding of the word quiet. “In the winter it’s rugby and summer it’s Nippers. As a family we love playing in the backyard, cooking and heading to the coast as often as possible. Brisbane is a great city to work and live; we adore the people and the climate,” say the Woods, who have been approached to open more hotels under the Portal banner and albeit a few changes, are looking forward to the next challenge. 52 Astor Terrace, Spring Hill, Queensland, Phone: 1300 0 PORTAL 07 3009 3400 www.portalhotel.com.au Queensland LuxuryStyleLiving

The result is luxury and glamour personified. “Each apartment has been masterfully designed to encapsulate an individual mood,” explains Tania Hindmarsh about the two residences at Weyba One Four and the two residences at 20 on Weyba. “Vibrant colours, gleaming finishes, plus furniture and fittings sourced from around the globe, shriek of splendour - an impression complemented by premium-quality natural materials such as stone-stacked feature walls and red cedar flooring. Koi ponds, splash pools and spas - natural additions to the tropical gardens, bring the outdoors in.” Scott, inspired by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, has translated time-worn design principles by presenting outstanding lineage and instant architectural appeal. Charles’ attention to detail and the fusion of various material required during the building process has been described as “knockout”. Tania has an innate understanding of maximising space to achieve a seamless flow. Her choice of features and accessories add allure to the design brief. Tania says she draws inspiration from life:“There are so many beautiful places even nature itself to admire, touch and smell – lots of memories that fuse. Whenever we go to another country we look at the architecture, how it's put together and the materials used. I take everything in and let the ideas evolve from there. “My dad was also a huge inspiration. He was a designer/ builder who was constantly coming up with great new ideas. I've been around building sites all my whole life so it’s quite natural to me. And with Charlie’s father being an engineer and his grandfather an architect, it's in our blood. We live and breath design.” Tania and Charlie’s favourite holiday destination is Bali where they feel so relaxed and enjoy being indulged in what is their idea of heaven, however it’s the finer aspects of Asia that can be seen in the detail of

Such clever creative people, beautiful scenery and lush outdoor living. “We wanted to bring that feeling into these boutique apartments - a combination of great design, mood, passion and soul to Sunshine Beach with its similar climate. Colours are also an integral part and should transcend a warm emotion as soon as you step inside. “I’ve designed or handpicked the furniture for each of the four apartments to ensure an individual wow-factor look. Wherever possible I’ve had it manufactured overseas. The lounges for example were imported from Germany. “Stone and timber are very important elements giving warmth, interest and grounding. Lighting gives the all-important mood and I’ve deliberately dodged usual-style fixtures using instead individually sourced art features. Once again it gives each apartment a personality whilst being reminiscent of a luxury retreat.” Tania and Charlie, who have sons Daniel 17 and Brycen 6, confess they build as

Villeroy & Boch heads to Indonesia with latest NewWave Caffè Colours series... Following on from the success of last year’s South America theme, Villeroy & Boch has launched the third of its NewWave Caffè Colours series, with the focus this year on Indonesia. Each limited edition series is designed to reflect a different coffee growing area, and Indonesia’s Java, Bali and Sumatra have all inspired this year’s collection. NewWave Caffè Colours of Indonesia consists of four patterns, each taking its distinctive flavour from Indonesia’s heritage. The Bambu design takes its theme from nature, with green and pink the core colours. Batik embodies Indonesia’s craftsmanship and is based on the traditional wax and tie-dying methods used to make Batik cloth. Merah, meaning red in Indonesian, symbolises the island nation’s culture and encompasses several shades of the colour. Tanah represents the people, depicting the head of a woman reminiscent of a Balinese dancer. Made from fine china, the series consists of a cappuccino cup and mug, available with a matching party plate. The series is complemented with the Bali Inspiration range, which includes tealight candle holders, incense stick holders and animal ornaments, designed to bring a further touch of Indonesia’s culture into the home.
Available from selected department stores and The House of Villeroy & Boch. Cappuccino cup RRP $47.95; Mug RRP $49.95; Party plate RRP $49.95. For more information visit www.villeroyboch.com NewWave Caffè Colours of Indonesia Tanah mug – RRP $49.95 / Tanah party plate – RRP $49.95

here are over 3,000 native species of bromeliads with an additional 6,000 hybrid and cultivars developed globally. They vary in size from small tillandsias no bigger than your finger and often hung on walls, logs, ornaments and water features, to large puya and vrieseas, which are more than two metres across. Bromeliads are distinguished by their distinctive structure of a single rosette of leaves which often create a vase-like water store. Many such as aechmea fasciata have striking flowers, maybe an elegant form, are unusually variegated, striped, spotted or spiky foliage or have dramatic colours from bright green, yellow, pink, purple and intense reds to sometimes a spectrum of them. The hardiest have relatively thick hard leaves or leaves covered in silver ‘scurf’. Landscape architect Phillip O’Malley collects robust landscape varieties especially the sun-tolerant vibrantly coloured ones such as the giant orange aechmea blanchetiana, the big red centred neoregelia McWilliams, the white-edged neoregelia sheba, and the dwarf red
neoregelia fireball. “Bromeliads grow well in low soil as they don’t take up much moisture through their roots,” explained Phillip. “They need filtered light with no harmful midday sun as they will burn. I think they look fantastic when mass planted, in small urban-style gardens where space is limited or by placing them in tree branches or palm trunks, forming a vertical gardening thus extending the planting space.” “Bromeliads are addictive,” said Ian Goatham who with business partner Bob Gunderson grow about 200 types at their Pacific Paradise nursery and sell them via the Eumundi and Noosa Farmers Markers. “Indoors or out they are low maintenance, rewarding and so versatile with blooms lasting from three to six months. ‘Pups’ can be removed when they are one-third of the ‘mother’ plant.” Pop the ‘pup’ into the ground with material that drains readily such as fine pine bark or in a pot using potting or orchid mixture with lots of organic matter in it. In the garden, bromeliads can perform an important ecological function attracting frogs, lizards and insects to their water ‘tanks’. Needless to say rainwater is the beverage of choice. Did you know that the pineapple is one of the best known bromeliads and by cutting the rough end off and planting it, you too could be on your way to becoming another bromaddict?

reflecting a new style in mirrors & framing THE HUMBLE PICTURE FRAME HAS NOW BECOME THE WORK OF ART! nce upon a time, you visited the local framer to get the kids graduation photos framed so they “looked nice”... the choice was limited to a few different frames, none of which you liked but since you were there you picked the best of the bad bunch!. Not any more, today like most things framing has gone hi-tech. These days there are hundreds of frames, computerised viewing of the frame and matts (thats the coloured board around the photo and between the frame) are all computer cut into any shape or design you want. So here’s how it has all changed for the better. Tony and Chris Maine from Framez & Dezign explain, “when customers come in with their photo or item to be framed, we place it on the table and photograph it with our overhead camera, then once a frame is chosen from the literally hundreds we have on offer, it’s incorporated via computer and shown on the computer screen, just as the finished photo, matt and framing choice will look when
O
completed. It’s that simple” says Chris. “No more costly errors - and you can see multiple choices at the click of a button”. One of the increasingly popular framing ideas is kids names or pets names, with each letter computer cut out of any colour matt with a photo attached. The ideas are endless” says Tony. Just arrived from Italy are some magnificent, opulent frames which have proved a winner with interior designers. ‘We have recently made some huge mirrors for a new Surfers Paradise nightclub using these frames” said Tony. ‘Mirrors are a fantastic and reasonable way of creating a spectacular new look for apartments and homes. of tranquility throughout the design and ambience of the hotel,” says Andre Fu. Dean Winter, General Manager of The Upper House, adds: “Our hotel was created to provide a retreat removed from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. We’ve certainly achieved that by appointing Andre Fu as the designer for The Upper House.” Entry through a Bedonia stone doorway façade by Thomas Heatherwick evokes the image of a curtain being opened to welcome guests to a private residence. A subtly-lit driveway then leads to a dramatic 13ft high textured nickel front door, enveloped by floor-to-ceiling glass walls that appear to sit on top of pools of water. Inside the entrance, a circular bamboo enclosure, ‘the Lantern’, marks the beginning of the ‘upward journey’ along a dimly-lit escalator with walls lined with bespoke lamps leading guests into Level 6, flooded with natural daylight, and featuring ‘The Lawn’, a lush grassed area for relaxing with cocktails and bean bags for lounging under the sun. The Collins’ latest development, where guests can also play and stay in luxury is Rainbow Sea while Lyndon Simmons has redeveloped the Rainbow Beach Hotel into a Queenslander-style pub with a laid-back atmosphere, ocean views from the Palm Grove and Beach Bar, and smart pub fare. Rainbow Beach is the northern most point of the Sunshine Coast and the Forty Mile Beach strip along the coast to Noosa offers excellent 4-wheel driving opportunities as well as surf and beach fishing along the way. It’s also the southern gateway to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island and from July to October there’s no better time to visit, if you’re after a fin-tastic time. Southern Humpback whales leave the rich feeding grounds of Antarctica in May and make the annual 6000 kilometre journey to the breeding grounds of the Whitsundays. Some females will give birth, others will mate and all will take time out from their migration cycle to wallow in the sheltered, warm, calm waters of the Great Sandy Strait, socialising so the new-born calves have a chance to grow stronger before they continue south, and of course in-between times show off to adoring audiences. Kingfisher Bay Eco Resort in conjunction with Hervey Bay whale watching pioneers Brian and Jill Perry, run whale watching excursions direct from Fraser Island to Platypus Bay and you can be assured of an unbelievable time. See majestic mammals slap their pecs and tails in perfect harmony over and over again, be up close and very personal as whales breach - that’s corkscrewing out of the water, showing off gleaming under bellies, before crashing in spectacular fashion. THE E.N.D. WORLD TOUR he Frontier Touring Company is thrilled to announce the return of apl.de.ap, Fergie, Taboo and will.i.am – the quartet collectively known as The Black Eyed Peas – to Australia and New Zealand this October. Performing in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland, this will be the band’s first tour of Australia and New Zealand since 2005, and will see The Black Eyed Peas present their most spectacular show to date; The E.N.D. World Tour. The Black Eyed Peas will tour in support of the most successful album of their career, The E.N.D. (in store now through Universal). Building on an already stellar past that has seen the band release multi-platinum albums, a plethora of monster singles, and highly successful solo albums from Fergie and will.i.am, The E.N.D. has helped The Black Eyed Peas soar to new heights. unforgettable tunes, ensuring both fans of the old and of the new have fallen for their latest offering. The E.N.D. became the band’s first US album chart topper, and debuted at #1 and #2 in Australia and New Zealand respectively. The success of lead single ‘Boom Boom Pow’ broke records around the world, sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 12 consecutive weeks (and counting) and the ARIA chart for six, only to replace themselves with second single ‘I Gotta Feeling’ this week – previously a feat only achieved by ABBA, Madonna and The Beatles, and by no other artist in the 20th century. It’s on stage, however, that The Black Eyed Peas excel most. A flurry of enthusiasm, energy and excitement, a live show by The Black Eyed Peas is not one you’ll forget overnight. The band’s last tour drew rave reviews for their originality and ability to shatter expectations. The E.N.D. World Tour promises to deliver all this and more. Housing their most sophisticated tour production to date and state of the art visual effects, The Black Eyed Peas have vowed to step it up and make this their best tour yet. Keith Urban to Rock Brisbane again… with his 'Escape Together World Tour'
Keith Urban's "Escape Together World Tour" began on 7th May at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. Since then he has received rave reviews in cities throughout America; “A captivating performance” (Hartford Connecticut’s Courant), “The dude from Australia rocks” (Minneapolis’ Star Tribune), “What makes Urban one of the best live acts in the country, is his ability to connect with the crowds (Green Bay’s Press Gazette), etc. Fans and critics alike have marvelled at Keith’s ability to connect with his audiences. A 3600 square foot stage, which melts into the 'floor seats', certainly helps to afford Urban the ability to simply walk from the stage into the crowd. As a result, Urban has found himself performing from the floor, the first tier seats, as well as walking through the audience to get to a satellite stage located directly opposite from the main stage. In fact he’s appeared in the crowd some three dozen times to date, giving his fans unparalleled access to him during the show. “Our goal every night is to play with the crowd, not at them…we designed the stage to make that possible,” said Urban. Keith's recent tours of Australia have seen him playing sold-out Arena's across the country, headlining the Blues and Roots festivals from East to West coast, jamming on stage with John Fogerty and John Butler, and constantly winning over new fans with his electrifying guitar playing and high energy live performances. Culture Crescendo Despite tough financial times, the Noosa Longweekend festival general manager Ian Mackellar has claimed the 10 day event as being the most successful to date. “We’ve been flooded with positive feedback for bringing such world class acts to Noosa,” he said. “The festival achieved 100 per cent of its forecasted budget; 6800 tickets were sold to more than 80 events; and visitors from Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and various parts of Queensland travelled to Noosa specifically for the event, so it has an incredible reputation.”

Kicking off the event was a breathtaking performance by award-winning classical guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan and Ian said “the festival closed the way it opened – with a huge musical bang – thanks to the exceptional talent of cabaret singer Paul Capsis who blew everyone away with his encore rendition of a Billie Holiday song.” Work on the 2010 festival to make it even more exhilarating, has already begun. KEEPING UP APPEARANCES USING COSMETIC SURGERY IS ALL THE RAGE, VALUE-ADDING AND ENHANCING YOUR BEST ASSETS IS THE FUTURE BUT HOW MANY BLOKES THINK IT APPLIES TO THEM? ooks are everything, especially when you’re out on the town. Even checking out or comparing the results on others has become a popular pastime. But did you know that the ultimate cosmetic surgery can be found in Violet Street Eagle Farm? This will definitely have every man interested…well depending on his assets. And, luckily, it’s a place where ladies will be anything but jealous. Many proud car owners are discovering The Bump Shop quite by accident. It has been a well-kept secret for around 35 years. It’s a haven for real craftsman who specialise in cosmetic enhancements – that is , for those with a serious vehicular passion. One customer has had a ‘relationship’ with the Bump Shop going back about 25 years. His E Type Jaguar was in desperate need of a little, tender loving care, and crucial attention in the body department. At the time, owner Paul Jennings of The Bump Shop had established an enviable reputation as the most advanced destination for repairs to Bentleys, Jaguars, Mercedes, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, classic and other prestige motor vehicles. Here, the high-tech painting/ baking booths give a finish that’s better than when the vehicle rolls off the factory line. One of the more glamorous restorations was the fully restored 1934 Rolls Royce Salon that became a fixture in the Rolls night club at the Sheraton Mirage Hotel on the Gold Coast, until tragically the owners decided to cut out the centre for extra seating. But, as history would have it, 20 years on, the Roller was back again to be successfully re-assembled and restored to its former glory by The Bump Shop Today, the Bump Shop employs 35 staff, is still ahead of its competition in quality and professionalism, and is at the forefront of

technology in motor body repairs and repainting. Maintaining a green image and sustaining environmental consciousness is a key to the business, with water being conserved and collected, thanks to the massive roof area of over 20,000 square feet. While Paul still enjoys the occasional classic car coming in for a complete restoration, he says these days it's the commercial and contract work that keep the company’s staff levels high and integrity in place: "We have contracts with some of the largest transport companies, so their vehicles are kept in tiptop shape, plus with regular maintenance programs for fleet owners, resale values of vehicles are kept at a premium.” For the average motorist, this also applies to trading in a restored well-kept vehicle, so the value is
higher and the dealers can on-sell directly without any additional work needed. The Bump Shop covers a wide range of services including heavy and light accident retification, hail damage, factory baked enamels, A grade mechanical and RWC Division and last but not least is the exterior, interior vehicle detailing division, where your car upon completion is presented to you like a “new pin”. “We are also approved repairers by all major finance and leasing companies, which makes it easy for customers as only one quote is required, and we give a ‘lifetime’ warranty on all repairs” said Paul. As for the Bump Shop’s number one fan and E Type owner: after 25 years the paint work on his pride and joy is still perfect but mechanically…well that’s another story. Water bomber attracts interest world-wide FIGHTING FIRES WITH FIRE POWER COULD SAVE LIVES THANKS TO JASON SCHELLAARS’ INVENTION. Writer: Helen Flanagan s a teenager in Melbourne, Jason Schellaars convinced

his parents Tina and Arnie he was serious about becoming a pilot. He succeeded with a student’s
license at 16, chose marine engineering as a career and inbetween times tinkered away hoping to come up with an invention that would make a difference. In 1998 and now living in Noosa, he went for a trial instruction flight with Becker Helicopters and was immediately hooked, so joined a Sunshine Coast aerial water-bombing company. He mulled over the idea for a more compact and user-friendly firefighting tank and went into the development phase in the garage at home. Today Helitak is assembled in a large shed on his parent’s 10 acre tomato farm at Doonan. “The Helitak fire tank is constructed from fibreglass, aluminium and fabric,” explains Jason, who has already sold his tanks to private operators in Canada, USA and Australia and has fingers crossed for an order for 150 from the US National Guard. There’s also been interest from Spain, Turkey, Asia and Europe. “Helitak consists of an expandable fabric bag that is attached to fibreglass housing and connected to the aircraft on the existing hard point so no structural modifications to the aircraft are needed. With the Black Hawk helicopter crew can be fighting fires in half an hour.” Tanks, which can take from 1000 to 4000 litres of water, are quick and simple to install making them ideal for an emergency. “The tank expands down the centre of gravity unlike other brands of tank making it faster and more efficient than tanks now used is aerial firefighting. Also we design and manufacture our own pumps which have flow rates up 150% higher than other manufacturers. “We do all our R&D here at Doonan, have seven models in production to suit different aircraft, and once testing is complete the components are mass produced elsewhere, leaving only the assembly. Currently we’re looking at a 10,000 litre tank for use on the US National Guard’s Chinook aircraft.” Sky-crane water-bombers such as the Elvis helitank have a larger capacity, however the Helitak used with say Black Hawks are faster and unlike Elvis, can be used for evacuation, carrying up to 15 people. “Simply strap on the Helitak and depending on the emergency it either lands, gets people on board, takes them to safety then returns to throw the water on, or the water can be thrown first.” Jason, who is 38 and has two “great” kids Emily 10 and Riley 7, recently worked on helicopter operations for the Moreton Island oil spill clean-up. He appeared on ABC TV’s New Inventors, impressed the judges so much he collected the trophy for his Helitak invention and heads straight to the finals.
