Beck Carse, Scott Carse, Katherine Gardner, Gregory Gardner at the opening of Belinda Herfords art exhibition ‘Frontierland’ at Poeta on Hastings
Danielle Karukchi Kim Susskind ebony owner and Monica Griffin Ebony shines… Poeta by Starlight… The night was balmy, the lights of Hastings Street twinkled in the trees, and guests meandered through Poeta herford on hastings Gallery to admire and make sure that lots of little red dots appeared on modern abstract expressionist painter, Belinda Herford's latest exhibition, Frontierland. The walls were awash with colour and spacial perception. By extending beyond the boundaries of the linen, the paintings take you into another realm of visual dimension. The bold, brave shapes and colours were applauded by the viewers, and glasses clinked with delight as guests enjoyed a selection of delicacies designed by adjacent restaurant Locale, and seemed reluctant to leave. Definitely a night to remember. Breathing Art... Ocean Dance, Peter Lik's first major release for 2014, was unveiled to an appreciative capacity crowd at The Peter Lik Gallery in Noosa on a balmy Saturday evening recently. The night was Hawaiian themed to match the location of the shot , and as guests arrived they were welcomed with colourful leis, which contributed to a happy party atmosphere. Canapés were served to the appreciative guests by the wonderful staff of La Vida restaurant and accompanied by champagne and fine wines. To add excitement to the unveiling, there were lucky door prizes and extra special deals for anyone purchasing Ocean Dance on the night. Unveiling night is the only opportunity a non-collector has to purchase a major release at these special prices. Art consultants, Simone, Joanne & Stevie, and Gallery Director Sharon were kept busy with sales on the night, which continued into Sunday morning. One month after release Ocean Dance had already sold 45% of it's edition.

It was a fantastic opening night at Ebony Beauty in Quamby Place recently, when invited guests, customers, suppliers, relatives and friends converged on the new salon to enjoy an evening of wine and fabulous food, as well as the opportunity to mix and mingle with staff and enjoy mini treatments from the five stations on offer. A huge celebration cake topped the night off, and owner Kim Susskind was ecstatic with how much everyone loved the evening.
Congratulations… The Sunshine Coast Hinterland boutique resort, Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat, has won Gold for the 2nd successive year in the tourism industry's Hosted Accommodation category of the Qantas National Australian Tourism Awards. Owners, Mark and Joanne Skinner and on-site managers Karen and Michael Cross were delighted.

Move over Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning - the dogs are taking over the waves... Noosa's Main Beach was bustling with activity as the crowds surged onto the beach to watch the 3rd annual Surfing Dog Spectacular recently. Beach loving, surfer dogs and their owners were eager to compete in a prestigious field of canine favourites. The winners of the 2014 VetshopAustralia.com.au Surfing Dog Spectacular Best Wave Award were Morgan Dittman, Jesse Dittman and Kosta (a bulldogxmastiff ) from Mojo Surf. Jesse is Morgan's wife and it was 'spectacular' to see the three of them catching set after set - a well deserved win. Morgan has been surfing since before he could walk and has been part of the Mojosurf team for the last 5 years. Working as National Surf School Manager at Mojos, means he has shared his love of surfing with thousands of eager, first-time surfers along the East Coast of Australia. His commitment for surfing extended to a 6 year stint on the WQS and he has both an Australian Junior and Open title under his belt. His passion for surfing was reignited when he enrolled his best friend Kosta in this surfing caper. Morgan and Kosta have been catching waves together since 2009, and Kosta's favourite craft is a 10'6" stand-up paddle board. The two of them can often be seen in up to 3 foot surf at Mojosurf surf camps up and down the coast.

Welcome… There is always something exciting happening in Noosa… but one of my favourite events is the annual Surfing Dog Spectacular. Yes, I know that there is a human surfing competition on as well - and that is also exciting to watch - but dogs, with their four, hairy, wet legs carefully balanced on a board is just magical. Who wouldn't be mesmerised?

n illustrious career as an elite athlete, motherhood and demanding business commitments has made Lisa aware of the importance of life balance. She realised the value of motivation at an early age. When she was just 12 Lisa was recognised as one the fastest swimmers in the world for her age. She went on to win 15 gold, seven silver and eight bronze international medals. Lisa is the only Australian swimmer to have held Commonwealth and Australian records in every stroke except backstroke. She represented Australia 16 times, competed in two World Championships, three Commonwealth Games and three Olympic Games. Lisa retired from swimming after the 1992 Olympics and threw her energies into surf boat rowing competitions and championship outrigger canoe events. Her team won the Queensland Surf Life Saving Championship in 1996 and the World Championship Outrigger Canoe event four times in 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004. The team also won the world solo championship in 2005, they are the only Australian to win this race. Accolades include an MBE, an OAM, the Australian Sports Medal plus the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through swimming. Lisa was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985 and appointed Chair of the National Australia Day Council 2000 by then Prime Minister John Howard. She held this position she held for eight years and was the first woman to be named as Chair. She was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2008 Australia Day Honours. Lisa was the face of Uncle Tobys Muesli Bars for 23 years, the spokesperson for Fernwood Fitness Centres for 10 years. She made P & O Cruises famous in Australia and endorsed 30 Plus, a women's hormonal supplement. Lisa is a sought after speaker and makes numerous appearances at major national and internationally events. She managed all this and brought up three children with former husband Grant Kenny. Jaimi (26) has a successful career as a photographer and nanny, Morgan (23) is a dancer at the ultra chic Moulin Rouge in Paris and Jett (19) is a professional lifeguard. This level of achievement might cause some people to rest on their laurels but at 51 Lisa shows no signs of slowing down. Now Lisa and her partner Joel Walkenhorst live happily on the Sunshine Coast when they are not travelling Australia in their Jayco campervan promoting health and fitness through the One Life One Chance Aussie Roadtrip and adding to the huge number of Kiss Club (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) members.

“What you eat and what you do is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Move more, don’t smoke, don’t eat junk and avoid excessive alcohol.
Lisa says life as an elite athlete is short so it is important to have other options. “I have always been conscious of choosing things that I enjoy. I enjoy travel, camping, exercise and living a healthy lifestyle,” she says. “My latest career pursuits combine all of these and I have the added satisfaction of helping people find a healthy way of life. “Obesity is the single biggest threat to public health in Australia. It is the leading cause of premature death and illness. The One Life, Once Chance Aussie Roadtrip visits regional and rural Australian towns so local people have the chance to learn more about health and fitness one on one from Lisa. “We hold a range of activities in each town. These usually include community exercise sessions and a free public seminar where people are shown how to lose weight, get fit and improve their health, anywhere, anytime and on any budget,” she says. Following a major personal health scare (six years ago Lisa had heart surgery to implant a defibrillator to correct an irregular heartbeat caused by a virus) she set about regaining her vitality

with her trademark determination. Stressing the importance of physical health and personal happiness for effective life management and balance, Lisa practices what she preaches. Her personal appearance and zest for life is testimony to the success of her methods. Lisa says many people want to make changes in their lives but are confused about where to start.“My passion is to inspire others to reach sensible weight goals and develop manageable exercise patterns. This will help reverse the trend of obesity and heart disease in children and adults. “People have different needs and wants. It is important to find an enjoyable exercise and a healthy eating pattern. The greatest motivation comes from success but it’s hard to be motivated all the time. Motivation comes in phases, it’s a roller coaster. Bad food, late nights, personal problems and stress impact on motivation. “As an athlete I trained every day, my motivation was to win. Now my motivation is to do as little as possible to stay in reasonable shape. You don’t have to work out every day, but you
must find ways of exercising efficiently, and consistently to get results of fitness, strength and clearing your head. If you don’t feel like exercising, just go for a walk. The less you exercise, the better you have to eat. “Goal setting is essential, without a planned goal there is no motivation. Set an attainable goal that requires effort to achieve. There are no magic gadgets or quick fix products; there are a lot of unscrupulous people waiting to take money for pills, potions and lotions that will not produce the desired result. “What you eat and what you do is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Move more, don’t smoke, don’t eat junk and avoid excessive alcohol. The current takeaway juice craze is not necessarily helpful; it makes it too easy to consume too much fructose (that’s another sugar) and not enough fibre. Swap fruit juice for a vegetable juice, eat four serves of veg and one serve of fruit a day. This is a better option for a healthier body,” she says. Practice what you preach is Lisa’s mantra. She shows how women of a certain age can look great,
feel well and retain their vitality. If having it all is an ambition, Lisa has the time, energy and motivation to help anyone achieve it.

Big Pineapple Music Festival 2014 fter bursting onto the highly competitive music festival scene in 2013 by selling out it’s thirteen thousand capacity, the Big Pineapple Music Festival is back - with arguably an even stronger lineup and even more goodies in store for festival goers in 2014. On top of the 33 acts and 3 separate stages, there will be a muscle car exhibition, skate and wakeboard exhibition, and a huge array of scrumptious food available. Musically there’s something for all tastes, with the main stage playing host to legendary bands such as The Living End, Bliss n Eso and Spiderbait, whilst there is also a Blues and Roots stage, as well as a Dance/Electronic stage . This year radio station Triple J has jumped on-board with the festival and is presenting the event to a national audience, which helps explain the huge influx of ticket buyers from outside the Sunshine Coast. Whilst the Big Pineapple Music Festival had noted big bar queues last year due to the unexpected first year sell-out, the organizers have taken 2013’s lessons onboard and have tripled the amount of bar infrastructure, as well as bringing in a crack bar management team from Melbourne to make sure everything flows as quickly and smoothly as possible. BPMF 2014 promises to be one of the greatest music events the Sunshine Coast has seen - so get out there and grab yourself a ticket before it sells out again. There is camping for a couple of thousand people and there are also charter buses available from Key areas on the Sunshine Coast from Noosa to Caloundra. GOOD THINGS (and feelings) come in small packages... “Are we there yet?” It’s fairly safe to say that there isn’t a single parent on the planet who hasn’t heard those words repeated, when taking little ones on a trip. As much as we love our kids, they can easily turn from angels to little terrors when cooped up for lengthy periods. Designed to help children learn how to effectively manage and communicate their feelings, two of the Mini Kimochis are particularly suited to travel – Mini Cat and Mini Huggtopus. Known for being happy, curious and cranky, Cat is perfect for a child that can be good one minute, yet be throwing a tantrum the next. Factor mentor Dannii Minogue said Dami looked like she stumbled on stage by accident but the shy girl in the corner took centre-stage and went on to a convincing win. Dami Im captured the hearts and attention of fans all around Australia, her followers claimed the title of the Dami Army. Dami and her family moved to Australia from South Korea when she was nine years old. She is now a proud Australian-Korean but making a life in a new country and finding where she fitted in wasn’t always easy. “Sometimes I felt like I didn’t belong to the Korean community or the Australian community. I think that’s what made me feel self-conscious and lacking in confidence,” she says. Dami showed a talent for classical music from an early age but pop music was her secret crush. She played classical piano from the time she was five. “I did the highest level of classical piano exams when I was in Year 11,” she says. “I was a highachiever in the classical world but I wasn’t really in love with classical music. “I hung around with other classical music students in uni, they were so in love with it and I just wasn’t. I was more into K-pop (Korean pop music) and artists like Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé so I struggled to fit in there too.” Travelling back and forth to Korea to pursue her classical career was a short-term solution but Dami really wanted a pop career back home in Australia. “I had a few gigs in small bars, churches and jazz clubs but I really didn’t know how to get my music out there and I didn’t have any connections,” she says. “I shied away from things I wasn’t sure about, I was afraid of meeting new people and putting myself out there, this of course didn’t help.” With the support of her husband Noah, Dami plucked up the courage to audition for X Factor. “When I decided to audition I was at the point where I just really wanted to sing in Australia. I was frustrated because I didn’t know how to get that happening. “My husband encouraged me to try out new ways to get my music out there. He kept telling me not to be afraid of going out of my comfort zone. He thought I was being too hesitant so he gave me a gentle push. I eventually agreed and decided to give X Factor a shot.” Dami quickly developed a strong relationship with her X Factor mentor Dannii Minogue. Dami says Dannii helped her embrace the super-stylish world of pop. “I think Danni saw what I had in me even before I did,” Dami says.“She trusted that I had something special and it was up to me to work on my confidence.
“I really hadn’t heard most of the songs I performed before Dannii introduced them to me. When I first heard One by U2 – the first song in the live shows – I really didn’t understand how the song would work for me but we worked through it and when I performed the response was amazing. All those standing ovations were incredible.” Week after week Dami floored X Factor judges and Australian audiences receiving standing ovations and strong reactions on iTunes charts. “I think my two favourite performances on the show were Purple Rain and Bridge Over Troubled Waters. “They reached number one on iTunes ahead of Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. I really connected with the lyrics and the emotion of the songs. I’ve always wanted to inspire people with my performances and those songs really helped me to do that.” Dami now relives those performances by recording the songs for her self-titled debut album Dami Im. “When we recorded the songs we tried to capture the vibe we had in the live performances. I want listeners to experience the excitement of the performances and relive the moment. The main difference is the recordings are extended and more polished. During the live performances I was moving and singing, in the studio I can focus all my attention on the vocals.” The album includes Dami’s recent number one ARIA single Alive (produced by hit makers DNA). Dami says she loves the song. “It’s a great way to start my career. I love the positive message of the single, to keep on dreaming and just go for it. The style of the song is very relevant. I think I really need that for people to take me seriously as a pop artist. The Sony Music Australia release of the album sees Dami rise to pop stardom. Her national tour is attracting a huge response from around the country. Dami says there’s more potential to influence other young people now. “This creates a platform for me to encourage them to follow their dreams. “So many people from so many different backgrounds have come to me and said they love me. When I see their faces it really feels like they’re looking at me with hope. Sometimes people from other cultures have a hard time fitting into a new country. If they see someone like me in the spotlight it shows them that dreams can come true if we work hard enough. “I’m so proud to be where I am right now; I just want to keep getting better. I’m hoping the album and the tour will create an even more emotional connection with fans through some softer moments. I will work really hard to become a pop artist with diversity and longevity,” Dami says.
Dami headlines... Australian TV audiences witnessed the astonishing metamorphosis of Dami Im during her meteoric rise to fame on X Factor 2013. The 24-year old Queenslander impressed judges and audiences as she blossomed into a powerhouse vocal star and first-rate performer.
“I think my two favourite performances on the show were Purple Rain and Bridge Over Troubled Waters

The colours of the Aspen leaves were vibrant and the carpet of yellow grass on the forest floor provided great contrast. Instead of a conventional sharp image, I took a series of “blurred exposures, moving the camera in a vertical motion, the same angle as the trees. The whole scene looked like an abstract painting. When I achieve results like this out of a camera, it makes my challenges totally worth while. The mood, colours, and blur motion of the forest really speaks to me hope they do the same to you!

Noosa’s Landscape Photographer, Philip Ayres
014 may have just begun but the Design, Advertising and Photographic world is buzzing with announcements of this years’ New York Graphis Awards. Since 1944 they have identified and published the world’s most significant and influential works from the world’s greatest talent and Noosa’s Landscape Photographer, Philip Ayres, won Gold for his powerful image ‘Survivor’, prints of which are available through Nissarana Galleries, Noosa. When asked to choose highlights of his first year on Hastings Street, Phil drew a deep breath and enthusiastically cited receiving no less than 14 Epson International Awards, adding to his existing AIPP award for his entrancing image ‘Mountain Light’, being chosen for the Blake Prize Directors Cut Exhibition and the International Masters of Photography Annual, opening his second Gallery, Spa & Beauty Centre in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria and securing a diverse ‘stable’ of leading artists for Nissarana Galleries, Noosa. These include local artists Colin Passmore, with his wonderful depictions of Noosa’s trees, beaches and waters, Dean Riley, the acclaimed Archibald & Doug Moran Portrait Prize finalist and latest members, Government commissioned stainless steel sculptor, Chris Calcutt, with everlasting creations made from 316 marine grade steel which often take over 200 hours to complete, as well as internationally exhibited, Julia Carter, who created ‘Little Bit of Magic’ specifically for Nissarana Galleries. And with her works held in both private and corporate collections worldwide, they are delighted to feature the talents of Noosa’s Julia Carter, to quote ‘she exudes optimism and ‘joie de vivre’ in breathtaking artworks, exploring the power of synchronicity and individual purpose by connecting nature with her own experiences, creating landscapes of the soul’. So what else is in store for 2014? Why not come in and see for yourself…
Gallery Ins and Outs … As with many successful galleries, Jive Art often finds itself approached by artists who think their work “is a perfect fit for the gallery”. Experience shows that is not always the case, so the role of Gallery director, Jan Sinclair is one of determining which artists to support and which to encourage to find other outlets.
J
an says that there is no absolute formula for success, but being true to a vision is for her a primary guiding principle. “Defining the genres or styles of work you are going to present is the first step in determining which artists you are going to support. Artists may not agree with you, but it is your role to make that call. Occasional forays into other styles are fine, but if in spite of your best efforts, the work doesn’t connect with your clients - you have to have the courage to disappoint an artist and move on”. Jan notes that it is impossible to know for sure which clients will connect with which artwork, but you do learn over time to make reasonable ‘guestimates’. She says it is not a reflection on any genre of art or the talent of any artist but a reflection of
the Gallery’s style in the eyes of its clients. Most gallery directors use a combination of factors: a passion for a particular type of work; experience with what clients are drawn to; belief in the work of particular artists who work within the gallery’s chosen genre, and of course the polish and integrity of the art itself. Jan’s artists speak highly of a supportive gallery who stands behind both the artist and their work. Renowned abstract artist, Michael Whitehead, has been with the gallery for almost 10 years and in that time has seen his career soar. Michael says that: “I show most of my work to Jan, even those paintings destined for other galleries. Her ability to listen and connect with her clients and then to share those insights with Jive’s artists is often the spark needed. Toiling away
in our studios, while rewarding, sometimes has us existing in a bubble, and while we don’t want people guiding our brushes – being to talk freely about directions and bouncing ideas off a knowledgeable non artist is invaluable”. A personal passion for contemporary abstract work and the work of Australia’s indigenous people has seen Jive Art come through the storm of a sluggish industry during the GFC focussed and strong. Jive Art continues its work of connecting people with the work of its talented artists. Jive Art, #2 Hastings Street, Noosa Heads. www.jiveart.com.au Tel: 07 5455 3308

OCEAN DANCE - Maui, Hawai’i
Photography. Love it! And I’m glad to share that feeling with you.
PETER LIK Master Photographer
L
ik’s journey had humble origins. Born in Melbourne, Australia to Czechoslovakian immigrants, it was his parents’ gift of a Kodak Brownie camera on his eighth birthday that set young Peter’s course. Entirely self-taught, Lik worked hard at his craft before making a
life-changing decision: to go to the United States in 1984. A chance meeting with fellow photographer Allen Prier in Alaska became a defining moment in Peter Lik’s life. He was introduced to the medium format panoramic camera and given the advice “Go big or go home.” Lik did both. He returned to Australia to photograph the vastness of the Great South Land. Peter then went on to open his own fine art publishing company as well as his first gallery in his adopted hometown of Cairns. He returned to the States in 1989 for another jaunt before undertaking a mammoth trip early in the new millennium to photograph landscapes of all 50 states. Fifty thousand miles and 1,000 rolls of film later, the “biggest challenge of my life” was completed. Highlights of Peter’s American odyssey can be found in his book “Spirit of America.”

Lik’s stature as a photographer has been indisputably confirmed with his receipt of the award of Master Photographer from both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He has also been awarded fellowships by the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) and The Royal Photographic Society (RPS). Now based in Las Vegas, where he oversees his company LIK USATM, Lik’s career continues to boom. He has sold in excess of $300 million of fine art photography, has 16 galleries of his own and counts presidents and celebrities among his many collectors. Early 2011 saw three more landmarks for Lik when he sold his

photograph “One,” taken on the banks of the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire, for $1 million and had his classic images “Ghost” and “Inner Peace” included in an exhibition of Nature’s Best Photography in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Lik’s masterworks include “Ancient Spirit,” “Sacred Sunrise,” “Angel’s Heart,” “Tree of Life” and the highly acclaimed “Ghost.” Each Limited Edition release is greeted with great enthusiasm by collectors and this has been reflected in recent recordbreaking sales. Now at the top of his game, Peter Lik is “loving it!” at full throttle and the animated Aussie is showing no signs of slowing down.

elbourne born artist Ashleigh Manley and his talented wife Kate made the move from the Gold Coast’s Sanctuary Cove to Hervey Bay in April last year. The couple opened a new gallery and studio space on the Esplanade. Ashleigh says they loved the Gold Coast but the waterfront gallery at Hervey Bay was irresistible. “We’d been travelling around a bit when we came across this place. We have views across the ocean to the horizon. I can almost count the people on the pier from inside the gallery. It’s a nice spot to be in and we feel we were meant to be here,” he says. Ashleigh has been painting professionally for more than 40 years but his work is as fresh and full of the joy that only the most exceptional talent can express. He continues to diversify and bring a new found excitement to the viewer. Ashleigh’s water colours capture the shimmer of dawn over the Bay to

profile “If I say go forward, go forward he knows this means to go quickly and safely along. He will stop me from bumping in to trees or lamp posts; he knows how to find the kerb. The relationship between me and my dog is one of trust but initial training is based on reward. “Siggy already knows when it’s play time and when it’s time for work. Once his harness is on he makes the transition. He is rewarded by being told he is a good dog. I know it will take six months to a year before we develop the bond I have with Nargee but it will happen. “When Siggy arrived we had to establish who is in charge. I must be the alpha male, Siggy is second in command and Nargee is gradually relinquishing his duties. It is important to make changes gradually so Nargee knows he is loved and Siggy feels welcome,” Robin says. Robin says guide dogs are very well trained but they still have their natural animal instincts.“When we are out walking people see me with my white cane and the dog in harness. Most people love dogs and it is quite common for people to come up to us for a chat. Unfortunately that can cause problems. “No matter how well trained a guide dog is he or she will always be distracted by other dogs. When a guide dog is distracted he can’t do his job. It is very disconcerting when dogs are wandering the streets without a lead and when people bring their dogs over to meet Siggy. We know these people mean well but it doesn’t work for me or my dog. It is better if they keep their distance and all dogs should be kept on a lead,” he says Guide Dogs Queensland spokesperson Matthew Barwick says breeding and training guide dogs is very expensive. “It costs $30,000 to breed, train and place each guide dog,” he says. “There are currently 24 Queenslanders waiting to receive one of these life-changing guides. “Guide Dogs Queensland relies on the generosity of Queensland communities and business people to provide 93 per cent of the funding we need to deliver our services each year. We receive less than seven per cent in government funding. “The funding we do receive is limited to some specific orientation and mobility programs in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. There is no funding for guide dog services or for any services in rural or regional Queensland. All our services, including our iconic guide dogs, are provided to Queenslanders in need free of charge,” Matthew says. Every year Guide Dogs Queensland delivers more than 1000 specialised programs to around 2000 Queenslanders with low or no vision and provides support to thousands more. Services include orientation and mobility training, guide dog services, support groups, counselling, low vision clinics, specialised student programs and training in electronic travel aids.

Robin says the loss of his sight was a major blow and required a great deal of adjustment. “I couldn’t continue in my engineering career so I retrained as a massage therapist,” he says. “My first guide dog Nargee helped me adjust to my new way of life and Siggy has now taken over his job. Nargee, a beautiful black Labrador, is nine years old and has now retired but he will continue to live with us as a pet, he is part of the family. “Siggy came to us on Valentine’s Day. He’s a yellow Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever cross. He’s is a qualified guide dog but he is still a puppy and will require quite a bit of training but he already understands my commands,” Robin says. Robin’s regular routine includes bus travel and walks to Peregian Village. “Siggy has to learn his way to the Surf Club, the post office, the vet and the baker. We may not take the shortest route, it is important to take the safest option. “An instructor from Queensland Guide Dogs helps with the training in the early stages. Siggy has to learn when to stay at the kerb. I make the decision about when it safe to cross by listening to the traffic signals and sounds. Siggy responds to the go forward command and he knows left from right.

ased on over 23 years of expertise, 12 years of award wins, and Nioxin’s unique skin care approach to hair care - one that treats the scalp skin as well as the hair. It consists of six three-part systems and additional specific treatments that can be combined for a truly customised solution. When trialled, the three-part systems have been proven to successfully combat thinning hair, with 70% of users noticing their hair looked thicker and denser after just two weeks of daily use. Clinical testing also shows that the additional Nioxin Density Restoration Treatment is so effective that it helps reduce hair fall from breakage and environmental factors by an average of 54%. Researchers investigated the biological factors that influence hair thinning, revealing three factors that can impact the hair’s appearance and condition: • there is a clear link between a healthy scalp and healthy hair • hair and scalp needs vary throughout hair growth cycles • the hair changes in structure over time due to influences such as ageing For Nioxin, thinning hair equals hair that has less volume and fullness. • fewer hair strands from hair fall and breakage • finer hair strands due to the hair’s structure changing over time • a poor scalp environment due to product and sebum build-up Finding the right solution to your hair thinning needs is as easy as answering three short questions; firstly the degree of hair thinning; secondly, whether it is fine or medium/coarse; and finally, whether it is natural or colour treated. Each system contains custom technologies and ingredients that are specifically tailored to the individual needs of your hair and scalp to create thicker, fuller hair. arah Hyland rocks a retro hairstyle that requires no tools Inspired by Valentino's runway show, Sarah's crown braid gives a youthful look to her classic style.
Step 1: Part damp hair in the middle and spray Sachjuan Root lift spray around the crown area. Blow-dry hair smooth, but with lots of volume. Step 2: Once hair is dry, spray with Sachajuan medium hairspray. Brush hair back from in from the front of the crown area while maintaining the middle part to give it a little 60’s look. Then brush all hair into a low ponytail and secure with a elastic band. Divide the ponytail into 2 sections. Take the first section of hair, twist, roll it under, and secure with bobbie pins to create a small bun. Braid the second section of hair and secure the ends with an elastic band. Step 3: Wrap the braided section of hair towards the front of your head, inbetween the forehead and crown. Secure with bobbie pins. The tip is not to open the bobbie pin - only push it into the braided hair then into the hair beneath the braid to secure, as this will hide the bobbie pin. Continue to wrap the braid around to the head to meet the ponytail, then wrap the remaining hair around the bun. Loosen hair around the edges to make it fun, and using a make up brush and Sachajuan medium hairspray, secure your style.
do you want to look like a Star? O
livia Wilde looks fabulous in a relaxed glam style that requires Mycurl curling / styling tool.
Step 1: Part hair from front hairline to nape and tie a ribbon around the widest area of your head (from recession area around the crown). Divide hair into 4 even sections from below the ribbon, and spray Straight and Shine Spray by Sachajuan on the left side section, using the width of a Large size Mycurl as a guide for your section width. Wrap hair vertically around a Mycurl from the mid lengths, directing hair away from the face. When the ends are secure under mid lengths, secure the first strap and continue rolling Mycurl up to the cheekbone area and secure the second strap. Repeat this on the right side. Step 2: Repeat Step 1 on the back two sections of hair, rolling hair away from the face. Step 3: Clamp your straightening irons over each Mycurl for 10 sections, and allow hair to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Spray Medium hairspray by Sachajuan onto a makeup brush and glide through the top area to clean up any loose hairs. Result: After hair has cooled down, remove the ribbon and all Mycurls and shake out the root area to open up the curl. Spray gloss on the ends followed by Super Strong hairspray by Sachajuan and sweep to one side to complete the style.

t is clear that Hutchence’s universal sex appeal, flamboyant lifestyle, string of high profile partners, and ultimately his sudden death, is still as alluring as ever. His talent as a performer combined with his bonafide rock-star look, still have his fans all around the world mesmerised. Part of this look was his Paul Taylor glasses that he purchased personally from Paul Taylor’s shop in Sydney's eastern suburbs with his partner Paula Yates. The frame was to become part of Hutchence’s signature look - and most famously, he was captured in Harry Bordens portrait on the Champs Elysees in Paris. The portrait now hangs in the Picture Gallery in Canberra, and remains one of the most iconic photos of the legendary artist. Paul Taylor only saw that Hutchence had picked up one of his frames in photos later on. He has since named an updated version of the frame after him - as a tribute to one of his MICHAEL SUN Black and White Stripe with favourite artists. Opal is Australia’s national gemstone with a pedigree as old as time. About 95 per cent of these precious gemstones are found here, no wonder Australia is known internationally as the lucky country.
T
here are only six types of precious gemstones found on earth, these include opals, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls. Precious opals are rare, these superstar stones make up about 0.25 per cent of all opals mined. Every opal is unique, the bright rainbow of colours (known as the play of colour) changes dramatically from every angle.
“Ancient Greeks believed opals bestowed powers of prophecy. Arabian folklore says the stone fell from heaven in flashes of lightning while Oriental traditions show opals as the anchor of hope. Lucky Librans claim opal as their birthstone but its exquisite beauty is available to everyone,” Rhys says. While the opal has been credited with magical properties Rhys says the real magic is in the unique play of colour in each stone. “A diamond must be magnified to reveal its true beauty but opal shows a spectrum of light to the naked eye. The mystique is enhanced with imaginative jewellery settings,” he says. “People love to own an exceptional piece of jewellery. he Noosa River forms the natural artery through the heartland of the region and provides a haven for safe swimming and waterbased activities. Shady banks provide perfect picnic spots or departure points for leisurely cruises through myriad tributaries, wetlands and lakes that lead to the mystical black waters of the Everglades. Wildlife abounds especially in this protected habitat. Across the river on the North Shore, a four-wheel drive will take you along a pristine beach past the coloured sands of Teewah, the time-worn shipwreck of the Cherry Venture and eventually to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island via a short ferry ride. Closer to Noosa the Noosa Marina is a destination you shouldn’t miss. As the sun rises, it not unusual to see kids sitting on the end of the wharf wishing for more than a tiddler on the line, watching charter boats head to the outer reef for a serious day’s fishing and hoping one day they’ll be old enough to be on board. Adjacent to the 40-berth Marina, skateboarders ramp it up before school in Spray Park, the Noosa Ferry prepares to leave for all-day and evening services to Noosa Heads with drop-offs and pick-ups along the way, while aromas of coffee, bacon and toast pervade the salty air. The Noosa Marina is almost ready for another busy day. Set against the backdrop of the tranquil blue-green waters of the Noosa River and with picturesque views whichever way you look, the Marina’s naturally nautical look and village atmosphere are complemented by 20 specialty retailers, five boat cruising options from charter boat hire and self-drive house boats to leisure specialists plus eight restaurants and cafes. Boutiques are filled with elegant fashion and casual resort wear. Specialty stores overflow with must-have homewares, eclectic gifts, chocolates and sweet things, canvases, framed photographs
and sculptures, fresh flowers, foot wear, eye wear and toys. It’s heaven times three at day spas for beauty treatments, massages, hairdressing and detox programs Along the pathways from the Marina, across the Doonella Bridge and the Noosa Waters’ canal bridge, or just one ferry stop away, is Noosaville and part of the Noosa River, which in the main runs parallel to Gympie Terrace. From sun-up along the river or the “golden mile” as it’s known to the locals, tai-chi and yoga enthusiasts welcome the day, joggers, walkers and pooches on leads share the pathways, and cyclists sweat it out on a dedicated track which extends from the river, loops around the canals of Noosa Waters or via the mangroves and creeks to Noosa Junction. Along the foreshore information centres book tours to Fraser Island, jazz cruises and the romantic Gondola, ducks waddle along the water’s edge, flapping pelicans thrust their beaks under water looking for a feed or join seagulls onshore hoping for leftovers. Hiring a kayak or jet ski, charter a barbecue pontoon, putt-putt, fishing tinnie or stand-up paddle board. Along Gympie Terrace and around each corner are bike hires, side-by-side boutiques, book shops, world class restaurants, cafes, takeaway food, gelaterias, day spas, hairdressers, homewares shops, liquor supplies and art galleries. At each end of the esplanade are smart restaurants and the Tewantin side has the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, not only a social hub but a hit with kids wishing to learn how to sail. Other precincts nearby such as Gibson Road and Gateway Drive offer wide-ranging options from homewares, sporting goods, pamper places, a supermarket and a large national brand selling computer equipment and furniture to warehouse-style shops selling high-end fashion, recycled furniture, classy jewellery and a wellknown art gallery. Not-too-far-away the Sunday Farmers Market flourishes and pockets all around Noosaville have a plethora of places to stay, eat and shop. Noosaville truly has everything you want and more, just a five-minute drive away from Hastings Street.

profile Noosa attracts people from all over Australia and around the world. Recently settled residents Lisa Widmer, Mollie Bingham and Sara Kumpf are now actively promoting the location internationally.
Canadian girls live the sunny coast dream... 48
NoosaStyleLiving
L
isa Widmer was born and raised in Canada but decided to follow the sun to Australia after completing a university degree in human resources. She says the cold Canadian winters meant spending too much time indoors. “I love the beach and riding around on a cruise bike, I expected Australia to suit my lifestyle perfectly and it does,” she says.
Armed with a working holiday visa Lisa landed in Sydney and moved in with friends in Bondi. She explored the Sydney scene and then decided to see more of the lucky country. Lisa says she bought a car and drove up the coast to Noosa.“I stopped at a lot of places in between but didn’t really do the whole backpacker thing,” she says. “I have visited Melbourne and Cairns but the Sunshine Coast stole my heart. “I contacted friends Mollie and Sara in Canada. We have been friends since our school days in Kelowna, a city in the southern interior of British Columbia. I told them how great it was here and they decided to join me. “I began the search for a home we could share and the producers of the international television show House Hunters approached me about filming the search. We found a home in Alexandra Headlands with the help Dan Sowden of Ray White Maroochydore and House Hunters,” she says. Now Lisa, Mollie and Sara are comfortably settled and living the Sunshine Coast lifestyle. Lisa is practice manager at ABC Dental Buderim, Mollie is studying nursing at the university and works at Sunshine Coast Private Hospital. Sara is studying business at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Lisa says sharing the rented house with friends is great.“It's lots of fun always having your friends around. I have shared houses in the past where you end up hating your house mates because you are in such close quarters. “Living here is really good. I still feel like I am on vacation with my two best friends. Life is good. The only downside is our house has paper thin walls. I can sit in my room with the door closed and have a full conversation with someone sitting in the lounge room.” The girls agree Canada and Australia are similar in many ways but the hot weather took a while to get used to. Lisa says the average winter temperature in Kelowna is minus-seven degrees. “The heat came as a bit of shock but we can always cool off at the beach. We find it amazing that people wear thick scarfs when the temperature is still in above zero. “We now have heaps of friends and we all have Australian boyfriends. We can now understand the slang; it was a bit of a problem at first. Driving on the wrong side of the road was another thing that took a bit of getting used to. “We love the laid back attitude and the easy going lifestyle. We did find things more expensive than expected but overall we are living the dream. We all miss our friends and family in Canada. I miss the scenery and the seasons. “I love the ocean and weather here but Canada has beautiful landscapes. I grew up living on a lake where you spend most of your time boating and enjoying the very short summer season. I miss having snow at Christmas time and I miss hockey, Canada won gold in men's hockey at the Olympics this year and everyone at home got up at 4am to watch the game. They even changed the liquor licensing so bars could serve alcohol at 4am,” she says. “Canadian licensing laws are quite strict, you can’t take your own alcohol to restaurants, BYO is one of the things we love about Australia, it’s weird but awesome. We love dining out, Fish on Parkyn in Mooloolaba is a favourite because you can dine outside and it’s right across from the ocean. The seafood is always fresh.
“Rococo is another favourite, the piano bar makes for a nice atmosphere. The Birds and the Beans Espresso Bar in Buderim makes the best coffee on the coast. All the staff there are so friendly and genuinely nice people as well. “We love all the fresh produce like mangos and avocados. The coffee here is perfect. I am not a big fan of vegemite and I don't think I will ever get used to tearing the heads off prawns and eating them. But I absolutely love seafood and I have had some of the best here on the coast,” Lisa says. The girls all agree they have found their place in the sun.

Walk inStyle… "I design shoes to make women happy." Stuart Weitzman

Wedges are also featured again this year, Stuart is famous for the wedges with many Hollywood stars having been photographed in them...

Famed New Yorker, Stuart Weitzman's fascination with shoes started at a young age. Four to be precise. His father founded a shoe manufacturing business Seymour Shoes in Massachusetts, and Stuart was in awe of the shoes that he watched his mother wear as a model.
T
his early fascination lead to a lifelong love affair with footwear. Weitzman has been described as part engineer, part designer - creating almost one thousand drawings and 600 different styles per year. He is renowned for using unorthodox materials in his designs, but he never compromises on quality or fit. The artistry of his shoes shines through in the inventive combinations of materials that have long been a hallmark of the brand. Soft leathers, custom-made lace, jewellery ornaments, stunning crystals, all come together in designs that create awe; with the inclusion of glass, jute and precious metals, every ounce of his ingenuity is called to task. It isn't hard to imagine when you know that he designed the original glass slipper for the Broadway debut of Rodgers and Hammersteins' Cinderella. He is always on the lookout for new and exciting materials, as well as inventive takes on classic designs. You never know what to expect with each collection, as each one is a marvel of design, engineering and craftsmanship. You’ll be surprised to learn that each shoe: Is touched by up to 30 craftsmen, while being carefully engineered for comfort and style. Shoes can take up to seven weeks to complete, and of course Stuart is there every step of the way - from sketch to manufacture and packaging. “I design shoes to make women happy” says Stuart Weitzman, who understands that a great shoe is about more than form or function; it is about making a woman feel beautiful. Stuart Weitzman shoes are worn on the red carpet by

the famous, making them one of the most desirable shoes for women to own in the world. Devotees like Beyoncé, Angelina Jolie and Emma Stone are always being photographed on the red carpet in his creations. Of course, visitors to Noosa can buy Stuart Weitzman shoes right here in Hastings Street, where the owner of Diana’s of Noosa, Rhonda Bedford recognised the appeal of Stuart Weitzman shoes many years ago. Rhonda is one of only a handful of stores in Australia where the label is available.“We probably carry more Weitzman designs than almost anyone in Australia” says Rhonda. With over 600 designs made yearly, selecting what's going to be popular is an art in itself. Rhonda travels to New York and Europe before each season to source the latest designs for her boutique. A big plus for Dianas’ is the current European and US summer collection is in store now, well ahead of most other shoe shops in Australia. The new collection includes winter and the new summer 2014 range. Black is still the all time favourite with Navy making a comeback along with a wide selection of vibrant colours and natural tonings.

Noosa's food bowl... There is a veritable cornucopia of food choices available to those willing to walk on the wild side this Autumn. The Sunshine Coast is rich with local produce, and local producers, many of whom are following sustainable farming methods, and supplying our local restaurants with the menu staples for fine cuisine. Our sub-tropical climate and rich fertile soil makes the region a veritable food bowl, and a chefs dream come true. With farms rich in herbs, spices, and fruits, trellises overladen with rich red tomatoes, lines of crisp green lettuce and designer greens stretching to the horizon, and fruit trees heavily hung with all varieties and species, it is no wonder that our region's Farmers' Markets are the place to be seen each weekend, as local foodies and out of town visitors rub shoulders with local chefs sourcing the best produce available - direct from farm gate to plate. With the abundance of succulent seafood and meats available to purchase, as well as traditional staples like farm fresh eggs; cakes, cookies, French baguettes, patĂŠs and marinated olives and vegetables, Noosa lime salt and cordials, as well as cute little dining outlets full of yummy temptations to enjoy with a perfectly brewed coffee or fresh lemonade, it is no wonder that our local farmers' markets are the meeting place for serious foodies and chefs alike. It is not unusual to run into your favourite chef standing at the counter next to you, purchasing supplies for his restaurant's menu, while you choose the perfect ingredients for your next home dinner. We all know to buy what is in season - that is how you get the best flavours and results in any dish. Just ask a chef.

national search is currently underway to establish Australia's first Jamie's Ministry of Food pop-up kitchen. Jamie has challenged Australians to nominate their hometown or community, to be the host of a pop-up kitchen for 12 months. One finalist from each State and one finalist from Northern Territory and ACT, will be shortlisted to meet Jamie, when he visits Australia. "We are on a mission to keep cooking skills alive. Our dream is to have a Jamie's Ministry of Food kitchen in each State and Territory. We need Australia's help to grow the program, so who best to ask but the people on the ground," says Jamie. Knowing what we eat and how to cook it has never been more important. Cooking skills used to be passed down from generation to generation, but now fewer and fewer people have even the most basic knowledge about how to feed themselves and their families with good, nutritious food. Jamie Oliver Huon Aquaculture was thrilled to come on-board as a major sponsor of the search. "We've seen first-hand just how much good the program does for teaching people the basics of cooking fresh, healthy meals, through our salmon partnership." says Huon director & co-founder, Frances Bender. Persimmon is the colour of Autumn
many Aussies are yet to try this exotic fruit
Aussie fruit lovers are in for an incredible autumn with the glorious golden glow emanating from orchards across the countryside, signalling the return of one of Australia's best kept secrets the persimmon.
Chewy Persimmon & Ginger Cookies Makes approx. 35 cookies Ingredients: 110g unsalted butter, room temperature 1/2 cup of castor sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1 egg 2 cups plain flour, sifted 1 tsp baking powder, sifted 1 tsp ground ginger, sifted 1 tsp ground cinnamon, sifted 1/2 tsp ground cloves, sifted 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg, sifted 2 heaped Tbs of chopped crystallised ginger 1 cup raisins or dried currants 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans 2 ripe persimmons, peeled and pureed
Method: Preheat oven to 180oC or 170oC fan forced. With an electric cake mixer, beat butter, sugar and salt until pale and fluffy. Add egg and beat until combined. Add persimmon puree and mix with a wooden spoon until combined. Add flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, and mix with a wooden spoon until combined. Add raisins or currants and nuts, and mix until combined. Drop teaspoons full of the batter onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for 15-20 minutes. Cool on a wire rack before storing in an airtight container. Recipe courtesy: Persimmons Australia and Poh Ling Yeow.
Recipe
Despite the fact that persimmons have been grown here for decades, many Aussies are yet to try this exotic fruit. There are two types of persimmon – sweet persimmons, which are at their best when crisp and crunchy like an apple (but still taste fantastic when soft), and the original variety, which are ready to eat when the flesh is soft and jelly-like. Persimmons can be eaten peeled or unpeeled, stem and calyx removed, and cut into desired sections - alternatively, cut the fruit into slices horizontally to reveal the star pattern. One person impatiently anticipating this year's harvest, is persimmon lover and ABC TV's Poh Lends a Hand presenter, Poh Ling Yeow. The MasterChef all-star is eager to expand Aussie horizons by challenging them to be adventurous and give persimmons a go. She believes once they open themselves to the subtle, sweet flavours and fantastic textures they will be instantly hooked, just like she was. Their versatility makes them ideal for both sweet and savoury recipes. It's time to give these little beauties a go.

Sweet Valentine
words: kaylene murray
On a beautiful Autumn afternoon recently, we caught up with Peter Kuruvita at his popular, Noosa Beach House restaurant in Hastings Street, Noosa Heads, to talk about his fabulous new Mexican Fiesta cooking/ travel escapade on SBS One, and to try one of the many dishes he has been tempting us with on the show.
P
eter was full of enthusiasm for the food of Mexico, and the adventures he experienced whilst sourcing traditional recipes in their indigenous home. Peter lives by a 'chef vs wild' philosophy - and likes to push the envelope a bit with his cooking adventures. He explained that Mexico was a land of contrasts where - "you need to scratch the surface, and forget your preconceived ideas and prejudices, to enjoy the journey and really get to know the people." In his new 10 part series you feel part of the adventure, as Peter travels through Mexico in search of one of the world’s most exciting cuisines. Peter said that this was his biggest adventure yet, and he was exhilarated as he dived headfirst into the larger than life culture and cuisine of Mexico. With limited understanding of what it takes to create the perfect Mexican meal, and no Spanish language skills to aid his travels, Peter opened his mind and heart, as locals across the country invited him into their homes and

kitchens, introducing him to the fun, vibrancy and unique flavours that all combine to create the most delicious Mexican food. Guided by some of Mexico’s most intriguing and colourful local characters, passionate farmers and indigenous tribes, he travelled south from the US border by all modes of transport - truck, train, boat and even a rickety old car. From the deserts of the north to the jungles of the south, Mexico’s forever-changing landscape provided a dramatic backdrop. In a world bursting with the celebration of life and food, Peter found inspiration in the rich traditions and native ingredients of this diverse and ancient land. One of my favourite moments on a recent show was when Peter was introduced to the 'King' of Tequila, and shared a huge glass of his signature drink - half a glass of Tequila topped with Coco Cola! Mexico has given the world some of our most loved and staple cooking ingredients; tomatoes, chilies, avocados, vanilla, chocolate and corn; but Peter found that in Mexico, the locals use them in ways we have never even thought of. From tacos to tamales, salsas to sizzling pork, Peter discovered the traditional recipes of the regions before setting about creating his own versions. With a cook book to follow later this year, we will soon be able to add fabulous new Mexican dishes and cooking skills to our resumé. If you aren't up for a trip to Mexico, you'll be pleased to know that Peter is preparing two dishes each week from the show to be included on his menu at the Noosa Beach House. The bar will also be creating a special Tequila cocktail each week to add to the Mexican dining experience. We tried the richly flavoursome Birria: a Mexican dish from Peter's new show, consisting of tender, slow-roasted goat gently simmered in exotic spices, and presented with warm tortillas and chilli salsa. Washed down with the very exciting Sunset in Jalisco cocktail. Yum. “Think you know Mexican food, think again. This series will change any preconceived ideas you may have had. Voyager Estate 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Harvested during a record eight- day period in February 2013, and with grapes sourced from 14 separate vineyard blocks on the Estate, the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is quintessential Margaret River- easy drinking, yet sophisticated in style - and true to the best the region produces “2013 was the driest July on record in WA, spring delivered good rainfall and storms in November reduced our yield a little. Despite these and the hot temperatures in summer, we took grapes from the vines in pristine condition and in record time. This has resulted in a classic example of the blend, where the tangy aromatics of the Sauvignon Blanc are tempered by the palate weight and fine texture of the Semillon.” says Voyager Estate Manager of Winemaking and Viticulture, Steve James. RRP $24.00 Voyager Estate 2011 Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot Voyager Estate 2011 Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot, the second Cabernet dominant blend in the Estate range, is soft, well- rounded with a fine tannin structure and perfect for early drinking. James said “Our vineyards are planted to four different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, which contribute slightly different fruit profiles to the final wine. Excellent conditions early in the season meant that the vines passed through veraison quickly, and we can see the result in the wine. Full of vibrant summer berry, plum and cherry with silky soft tannins, the regional varietal characteristics that have become synonymous with Margaret River and Voyager Estate are evident in this vintage of the Girt by Sea." RRP $24.00 2012 Red Claw Pinot Noir Rich, fragrant aromas are dominated by cherry and dark berry fruits complemented by a touch of spice and underlying French oak. The long, silky palate has a lovely soft and velvety texture, with concentrated flavours of dark red fruits and a finely poised finish.
2012 Red Claw Chardonnay Straight from the Mornington Peninsula, offering excellent fruit flavours and perfect levels of acid retained in the grapes, the wines from vintage 2012 are looking fabulous - with quality and character very similar to the 2010 vintage. This wine presents a bright intense pale straw colour, offering lifted aromas of citrus, stone fruit and a hint of spicy French oak. A highly focused palate and lovely natural acidity and a long, complex finish. 2012 Red Claw Heathcote Shiraz The grapes for this wine were entirely hand-picked with each parcel of fruit carefully selected. This wine offers bright, dark berry fruit and lifted spice dominate the aromas, with underlying scents of pepper and subtle French oak. The palate is plush and silky, loaded with dark fruited shiraz intensity. Excellent structure and concentration.
Catalina Sounds 2013 Pinot Gris An elegantly balanced wine offering lifted aromatics of quince, spiced pears, stone fruits, beeswax and yellow florals. Flavour builds on the palate which is rich yet dry. The use of subtle lees and oak derived notes give a layered and sustained mouthfeel, underscored with fresh acidity and mineral notes. A perfect match to Asian cuisine, charcuterie or white poultry dishes. Catalina Sounds 2012 Pinot Noir A luscious deep garnet red wine offering an alluring mixture of dared berry fruits, lifted florals and spice with and underlying savoury note. The palate is elegant and silken with wild, dark berry flavours and gentle dried herb notes. Medium bodied, structured and graceful, and tannin integration which lingers in the mouth. Perfect match to charcuterie, crispy skin duck or new season lamb. Catalina Sounds 2013 Sauvignon Blanc As always, Catalina Sounds have allowed the fruit to tell its story and added an extra layer of interest with a small amount of oak fermentation and ageing on yeast lees to coax out the interesting textural elements of this extremely delicious wine. The palate offers elegantly proportioned citrus drive interwoven with tropical fruits and framed by lively acidity. The nose is full of citrus and tropical fruits with floral and herbal elements. Perfect with citrus dressed salads, grilled vegetables, fresh seafood or fine Asian cuisine. Drift to a place you'd rather be… Since floating across the ditch in early 2010, the DRIFT range of premium Marlborough wines have become favourites with Australian wine drinkers. The new vintage wines carry on the tradition. 2012 Drift Pinot Noir This wine is a deep garnet in colour, with aromas of ripe red cherries and raspberries with perfumed spicy notes. The palate is bright with a perfect balance of red plum fruit and earthy, savoury spice. Soft dark chocolate notes and rich red cherry fruit give further depth, which is perfectly balanced by fine textured tannins and fresh acidity. At its best when young and fresh, but will develop more weight and complexity over the next 5 years. RRP $24.45
The next generation of Australia’s First Families of Wine:
With 2014 well under way, Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW) has wasted no time getting into the swing of things. The onset of an early vintage in many regions has not slowed the AFFW’s commitment to the premium Australian wine message, with many of the next generation family members now spearheading the campaign.
T
he next generation of AFFW (colloquially known as the Next Genners) are increasingly being identified as faces to watch in the wine industry. In 2013 we saw Tom Barry from Jim Barry Wines named Gourmet Traveller WINE ‘Young Winemaker of the Year’ and he, alongside Johann Henschke of Henschke, have been featured in the UK Drinks Business list of ‘Top 30 under 40’ to watch. This definitive list was published in January this year. Those not involved with production are making their mark in the consumer wine markets. The Brown Brothers Next Genners (sisters Katherine, Caroline and Emma) have championed a number of prominent and clever consumer wine campaigns, and thanks to their #proseccotime and Summer of Prosecco initiatives, these passionate sisters have become a key driving force behind the rising popularity of Prosecco in Australia. Mitchell Taylor, Chairman of Australia’s First Families of Wine said, “Our next generation are a vibrant young group who are in touch with new and emerging trends, and they work with us to ensure that we stay fresh and on point in the modern marketplace. We have a lot of faith in our next generation and their ability to carry on our family legacies and become future leaders and innovators in the production of Australian wine.” The Next Genners represent a wide cross-section of personalities, ages, career paths and experience, but each is unified by their heritage, passion for wine and family. Each
family sees their Next Genners contributing to the family business in different ways. Think Brand Australia’s Managers (Richard Burch and First Families of Wine: Katherine Brown); PR and the Heart & Soul of Marketing (Justine Henschke, Australian Wine Caroline Brown, Jane Brown Brothers, Campbell); IT and Campbells, d’Arenberg, Environment (Hayley De Bortoli, Henschke, Purbrick); Commercial Howard Park, Jim Barry, Management (Sam Barry) and of course winemaking McWilliam’s, Tahbilk, (Tom Barry, Scott McWilliam, Taylors, Tyrrell’s, Johann Henschke). Those who Yalumba are not involved full time are often involved as brand ambassadors, returning to help out over the busy summer months in the restaurants and at cellar doors and as extra hands at vintage time. Over the course of 2014 AFFW will see its Next Genners continuing to play a critical role in taking the premium Australian wine message to the wider consumer market through events, tastings, and the planned Next Gen tour to NSW. Rallying together under the AFFW banner, they aim is to educate and inform the wine drinkers and wine curious, about the wide variety of excellent Australian wines available, the stories, history and characters behind these household names, and the importance of preserving these family owned and operated wine businesses. Their broad array of achievements, both publicly and daily on the job, show the passion the AFFW Next Genners have for their families, wines and heritage. 2014 will be a chance for them to continue their contribution and help ensure the AFFW message reaches new heights. The AFFW Next Genners carry the keys to future proofing their family business. In their capable hands the future looks bright.

The provision of fine linen and luxurious towels, the complimentary coffee pods, wi-fi and even a bin service that contributed to our wonderful holiday. In our view Nest Holiday Management has certainly set a high bench mark when it comes to holiday letting on the Sunshine Coast!”

or those wanting to create a green wall to grow their own herbs or hanging plants, but are a bit worried about how complicated it might be - check out this simple idea seen recently at the Green Villages sustainability hub at the annual Rootstock Sydney Festival. This is eco-friendly gardening meets recycling for the 21st century. Green Villages website greenvillages.com.au offers bright ideas for sustainable living, tips and ideas.
hey're perfectly suited to life on the coast - and who isn't! Their fleshy leaves, glaucous foliage and ability to grow in poor soils are adaptations suited to strong winds and salt. Succulents are available in so many different forms and habits, in striking colours and architectural shapes - they come as trees, ground covers and shrubs, and are notable for their beautiful flowers, which ten to bloom when other plants in the garden are not flowering. Aeonium arboreum Houseleek Recognisable by its flat rosette foliage. Ranges from a flat habit to a branching from up to 80 centimetres tall. Survives in front-line salt conditions and poor rocky soil. Cultivars include 'Atropurpureum', a reddish purple variety, and 'Zwartkop', and almost black form. Agave americana Century Plant It deserves respect, thanks to a serious array of thorns, and plenty of room, as a single specimen can be up to 2 metres wide. Looking brilliant as a single specimen or in a clump, americana is grown for its foliage as, although the 4 metre tall flower is spectacular,it signifies the death of the plant. Most are blue but there are several cultivars, including 'Variegata', which has a green centre and yellowish margin, and 'Mediopicta', with a white centre and green margin. Extremely hardy, americana requires full sun and freedraining soil. Agave attenuata Lion's Tail Probably the most common of all succulents grown, it forms a green rosette up to 1 metre wide and, although it looks best on the ground, will become arboreal given lower light and lack of space. I prefer to grow them in a clump rather than individual specimens as the foliage colour is too soft to be noticed when not en masse. Agave victoriae-reginae Queen Victoria Agave My favourite agave, it looks as if it has been painted by an artist to highlight the leaf borders with fine white lines. The most highly prized plant of the mid-1800s, it was named after Queen Victoria. Very hardy, you will want to feature it in an elevated space as it only grows 50 centimetres tall and dan get swamped by larger material. Suitable for sunny, slaty free-draining locations. Aloe barberae Tree Aloe I once maintained a property with a specimen of barber, 10 metres tall and 5 metres wide. Sadly, most are removed before they get this big as it appears to have become the pot plant of the moment. It is extremely salt and wind tolerant, making this species one of the largest trees you can use in the toughest of locations. Flowers are rose pink and foliage is olive green. n 2005, Brolga was leading a tour group out to Uluru, when he came across a dead kangaroo with a live baby in its pouch. He was so touched by the situation, that he rescued the joey, quit his job, and started a kangaroo education and rescue service in Alice Springs. For the next four years, he worked odd jobs for extra cash, including cleaning buses, and stacking shelves. In 2009, he was able to lease a 36 hectare property on which he opened the Kangaroo Sanctuary Alice Springs. After the documentary went to air in January last year, Brolga, received tens of thousands of dollars in donations from viewers inspired by his efforts, with all the money going towards building Brolga's dream - Central Australia's first wildlife hospital. This year, Brolga was a State Finalist in the Australian of the Year, Local Hero Awards, for his extraordinary contribution to his local community. And, in April, Australia's world-famous Kangaroo Dundee is one of many big-name special guests, who will appear at the Brisbane Tinnie and Tackle Show and National 4x4 & Outdoors Show. Ladies if your husband can’t afford the Bentley at least he can buy you a handbag or scarf... Vivid examples of Bentley’s exquisite colour palette bring new haute-couture choices to a woman’s range of luxury accessories.
The celebration of ‘pure’ colour extends the collection of two handbag models – the Continental and the Barnato bags – with references to Bentley’s signature bespoke hide combinations.
C
oncepts of refined luxury inspire a Special Ivory derived from Bentley’s 1952 Continental R-Type executed for the Continental handbag model in patent leather with a deep Burgundy interior. The Barnato handbag is now offered in an Imperial Blue exterior with Linen panels, a Linen interior accented with Imperial Blue pockets, representing the ultimate expression of luxury and refinement in harmony with sea and coastal landscapes, yachting and other leisure pursuits. Classical historic colours include Dragon Red drawn from the Continental GT V8, also executed in patent leather; and Cumbrian Green, which glances back to the renowned Bentley Blower model executed in combined patent and smooth leather, thus replicating the traditional 1930’s design where the car body was part paint, part trimmed in leather. Further intense colour specifications have been created through the significant expression of combinations evident in Bentley’s model palette. These bespoke pairings reflect a variety of global definitions of luxury taste, matching regional social and cultural values. The colour combinations can also be perceived as ‘passe-partouts’, or central blocks of colour which are bordered by contrast tones, as a picture in a frame. Such combinations include: Saffron/Linen, Imperial Blue/Linen, Portland/Pillar Box Red, Saddle/Linen.
Relevant to Bentley’s extensive current car colours are combinations which express a thematic contemporary fashion statement: Autumn/light blue (seasonal), Burgundy/Linen (classic), St James’ Red/Aquamarine (avant garde). Dr Ariane Reinhart, member of the board of Bentley Motors, comments: “The colours are strong and exciting. We want to bring accents of daring colour into a woman’s wardrobe. “The shades emphasise an aspect of the true Bentley personality, which a new generation of female customers can enjoy in their daily lives. The new handbag colours are complemented by the new silk scarves and bring the refined luxury and bespoke elements of a Bentley to a wider female audience.” The silk scarves depict architectural and natural landscape features in an abstract pattern. Within the scarf images are featured the Jacobean mansion of Crewe Hall, the historic estate of Tatton Park and the renowned façade of Bentley’s factory. The pool of colours lifts the traditional silk scarf into a modern interpretation that is full of life. In the two colour combinations of blue/Magenta and orange/Magenta can be found a compass, a composition of Bentley’s wings logo, a map of the world and a dial from a Bentley dashboard. adly, Mike Leyland passed away in 2009 after battling Parkinson’s Disease but Mal is alive and well and taking up residence in Maleny. Mal and his wife of 44 years Laraine will continue to travel but when they are not on the road they plan to relax on the Sunshine Coast. Mal says they had always wanted to live in Maleny.“We have lived an almost self sufficient lifestyle on a 25 acre property in Glen Innes for the past 12 years but looking after cows, goats, pigs and fruit trees has become a bit of chore,” he says. “We opted for a new home in Living Gems Sunstone Gardens Resort at Maleny. It’s maintenance free and the resort offers a host of five star facilities and an active social life. It gives us the best of both worlds, a country village lifestyle with holiday resort amenities.” Mal is not only a pioneer traveller he is a prolific writer with a string of books to his credit. His latest work is an autobiography that is due for release by Allen and Unwin in August. It promises to be a big hit with Australian readers as anyone who grew up in this country instantly recognises the Leyland name and recalls the catchy Leyland Brothers’ signature tune. Readers will discover the Leyland family history is worthy of a major television drama. Mal’s parents emigrated from England in the early 1950s. Mal was five and his brother Mike was eight. They were immediately captivated by their new home in Newcastle but it was the first of many. Mal says his father was an entrepreneur and quick to see the opportunities in the Lucky Country. “My dad came to Australia to give us a better life. Back then immigrants had to be sponsored by a resident citizen and show they had a secure place to live. We moved in with an English family that had emigrated several years earlier. “My dad worked hard to ensure our future. When the officials at Australia House in London were a bit slow processing our immigration application my dad wrote to then Prime Minister Menzies asking for help. He received a reply, the application was processed and we boarded the boat for the long journey to the other side of the world. “Dad capitalised on the booming economy and went into real estate. This often involved selling the family home so we were always on the move. Mike and I became especially close because the constant moves made it difficult to keep friends. Our relationship was based on friendship and brotherly love but we had more than a few spats in our business partnership,” he says. Mal’s memoirs, the experiences gleaned during a life well lived and his flair for story telling without embellishment guarantees a good read. His yet untitled autobiography will be treasured by people of all ages who admire a winning spirit and a sense of adventure.

Last word
opinion
Putting Noosa in the sites ofAsian travellers Words David Bowden
It had been years since I was last in Noosa. Then, I was on holidays and also to see friends who operated Lawfords Store in Noosa Sound.
W
hen I returned last year the sight of people sun baking on Noosa’s beaches confirmed that I had arrived on the Sunshine Coast. Turquoise waters and golden sands have sold Noosa forever and it’s refreshing to experience a marketing message that fulfils the promise. My mission was to attend the festival at the invitation of Queensland Tourism and write about it for Asian publications. A tough life I know, but someone’s got to do it so it wasn’t with too much hesitation that I accepted the challenge. Being an Aussie who hasn’t lived in Australia for over two decades the opportunity to return is always welcomed. Years ago I took up a position with an international NGO in Malaysia and for various reasons, haven’t returned permanently to Australia although I get back regularly. I was born in Newcastle and weaned on Hunter Valley wines as a student so wine has been important in my life since – for research purposes, you understand, not because I enjoy it! This wine knowledge assisted me in writing about wines in Asia where there is no wine industry to speak of and where wines were little understood when I arrived. This has changed and many Asians are now knowledgeable and hungry (or thirsty) to learn more and to include wine and food touring while holidaying. My love of such holidays is useful as I now have the opportunity to write about what I love to do myself. Now that the pioneer holiday destinations of Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the reef are on the itineraries of many Asians, it’s my understanding that places like Noosa are new territory for many, hence my invitation to attend the festival. Last year’s festival was superb but as there is no such thing as a free lunch, my task was to write about the festival. I loved the events that I attended, the weather was fantastic and Noosa has a lot to offer overseas travellers.
Everyone needs a good reason to visit a new destination and there’s nothing like a food and wine festival to provide the motivation for me to travel back to Australia. With this in mind, I headed from Malaysia to Queensland for last year’s Noosa International Food and Wine Festival.
David Bowden David Bowden is an Australian travel writer based in Malaysia. He is the author of several iconic books on Asia in the ‘Enchanting Series’ published by John Beaufoy Publishing of the UK (www.johnbeaufoy.com). These include books on Malaysia, Bali & Lombok, Singapore, Langkawi, Borneo and the soon to be published, Penang and Vietnam. All are available in Australia. 104

Asian Insights Not that I can speak for Asians, having lived there provides me with an insight as to what appeals to many. Unfortunately, Noosa’s beautiful beaches have only passing appeal to most Asians; they love to see it and photograph it. Lazing here for hours and frolicking in the water has minimal appeal. However, they love food and many are discovering wine. Wine will only be appeal to a few and spending hours swilling wine, isn’t always done. However, food is central to most Asians that I know. In Malaysia, the common greeting is sudah makan (have you eaten?) – if you have, you’ll discuss what you’ve eaten and, if you haven’t; you’ll eat or discuss the possibilities. Delicious food is cheap, sold almost everywhere and around the clock. Put simply; Malaysians eat because they can. The lack of hawker food in Australia puts a dampener on the eating habits of many Asians, but they soon find alternatives. Most need rice regularly and aren’t always open to eating ‘Australian food’ (whatever that is, but usually perceived to be Western food). Every few days there will be withdrawal symptoms and an urgent need to eat Asian food regardless of its quality. Australia’s quality and availability of seafood is renowned among Asian travellers. Seafood is perceived as a premium food and they can’t get enough of it. Therefore, many festival events will have huge appeal among Asian visitors. To continue a few generalisations, Asians love to shop. For me to understand this is difficult but I’ve thought long and hard about the phenomena. Shopping provides the trophies of travel and buying things you can’t get back home puts you in good stead with friends back home. Many people in the travel industry talk about ‘ecotourism’ but for Asian travellers, they should be thinking of ‘egotourism’ as many travel to impress others. Maybe this isn’t a trait specifically Asian; one of the reasons people travel is to brag about where they went and what they did. Buying specific items provides an outward sign of this. So most of my Asian friends will get twitchy if they can’t shop and many Australian destinations are perceived as being ‘dead’ in the evening because shops are closed. Market shopping is a must-do activity and Eumundi Market and Noosa Farmers’ Market would be hugely popular. Most Asians don’t travel to relax. They’ve spent good money getting to expensive destinations like Australia so it’s important to cram in as much as they can in one day. Most want quality accommodation and don’t suggest a walk in the rainforest; they have that back home and don’t walk there, so why should they start in Australia.
