Noosa’s gone to the dogs... The biggest hit of the recent Noosa Festival of Surfing, was the VetShop Australia Dog Surf Spectacular. Clever canines were hanging-ten…riding the waves and showing off their surfing skills to the delight of thousands of locals and visitors who crowded onto the beach for the highlight events. Chris DeAboitz and his super smart dogs were the standout of the event again this year.

Pink Bun Campaign for Breast Cancer
It's On Again… 11th May - 3rd June Over 600 Bakers Delight bakeries around the country will soon be rolling up their sleeves and joining forces with their local communities to help raise $1.5 million for Breast Cancer Network Australia in this year's Pink Bun campaign. BCNA and Bakers Delight are celebrating 15 years of working together to support Australians

affected by breast cancer. In 2015, the partnership will also reach an impressive milestone with Bakers Delight having donated a total of $15 million worth of funds and pro-bono services to BCNA. Each year in May, 100% of the sale of these now iconic Pink Buns goes directly to BCNA. So if you're in the mood for a little bit of colourful and delicious fundraising for an extremely worthy cause, make sure you pop along and buy your morning and afternoon tea pink iced fluffy delights. With 42 women diagnosed with breast cancer every day, and 7 of those women losing their life
to the disease - this is a simple and effective way of helping raise much needed funds. The unhappy statistic is - that more than 15,600 women and 145 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. And, that the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer has increased by around 40% in the last 15 years. I don't think there is a family in Australia who hasn't been affected by cancer in one way or another - whether it be personally, a family member, or a friend. The more money raised for research the better our chances of finding a cure. See you at Bakers Delight this May!!

have always loved the irreverent and extremely clever musings of Oscar Wilde, whether as dialogue in one of his legendary plays, or simply in reported conversations from the innumerable parties that he loved to attend. In this day and age true sarcasm and facetiousness is a lost art.

With social media seemingly running our lives and thoughts or lack thereof nobody seems to get the joke anymore. We are now told what is funny, smart or trendy by our computers, iPhones, iPads and all other forms of 'clever' communication. We are told what to eat, what to drink, what to think and what to feel, what to wear, what to buy and what to do, all at the click of a button. These are invariably accompanied by an image or video 'posted' by some unknown person, who has now become 'relevant' because they Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. And, don't start me on selfies! I love reading books... written and then printed on paper and bound. I love the feel of the book in my hands and enjoy the art of reading. It's not the same in digital format (but I have no problem if you like it, my 84 yr-old mother does!). It's just that I want to recline in a bubble bath and read to my heart's content. It's peaceful and quiet, and the odd splash of bubbles and water just make the pages a bit wobbly. I think it would be a whole different story with a wet iPad or iPhone!!

hen you meet Naomi Leon, you can’t help but admire her beauty. And you wouldn’t be the only one. Miss University Peru 2011, finalist of Miss Universe Peru 2014, and the face of many high profile brands in South America, Naomi is quite the looker. But it’s not just her external charm which radiates, it’s also her exotic warmth and charisma. In fact, it’s clear to see why partner Damien Wilkinson fell in love with her on first sight, marking the beginning of a whirlwind romance that has brought them thousands of kilometres from where their union first began. “At the time I met Naomi, I was living in Lima, the capital of Peru, and working on the Andes Mountains managing a geology program and site operation of a large copper and silver mining feasibility project,” explains Damien. “Life was amazing, with so much to
see and do in Peru: the incredible culture, the history, the food – it was mind blowing! And then, one day almost four years ago, as I opened a door to leave a bank, Naomi walked in. I asked her out there and then, and we’ve been together ever since!” A match made in Lima, Naomi and Damien embraced every part of their time together, travelling widely in Latin America (during which Damien proposed to Naomi) and ambitiously striving for success in their respective careers. But soon, the couple began to crave a completely new challenge. “Life was great, but after almost 20 years working in the mining industry, I felt it was time to do something different – we both did. We considered our options, and decided that opening a business in Australia – one of the safest and most beautiful countries in the world – was the right move for our lives together and starting a family.” continues next page... continues from previous page... Born in Sale, Gippsland Victoria, but raised in Queensland, Damien had a clear understanding of the landscape of the East Coast, and was immediately drawn to Noosa. “I had always loved Noosa. My dream was to buy a property in the Noosa area and enjoy the great lifestyle that came with it. I had shown Naomi Noosa on one of her first visits to Australia, and she had also fallen in love with the place. So we knew it was right. “After months of looking for a suitable business to invest in, one popped up on Hastings Street, and Armano Collections Fine Jewellery became our new enterprise. It was destiny!” Buying a renovator in Gympie, as well as pouring all their resources into their new business, Damien and Naomi put their sea change plans into action with aplomb, and soon
found themselves living and loving Noosa along with all the other lucky locals. “Running Armano Collections – offering a range of quality and unique jewellery sourced locally and globally – was a total change from what we were doing before,” Damien smiles. “I had spent years as an exploration geologist in countries like Australia, Iran, Turkey and Peru, looking for things like gold, silver, copper, diamonds and other precious stones in their natural states, and now here I was at the extreme opposite end of the spectrum selling the same materials, but in their most refined and elegant forms. Subconsciously, I must have been drawn back to beautiful things from the earth!” Nowadays, with Naomi taking control of the shop jewellery displays, classic car enthusiast Damien drives the business, and it’s a synergy that works well. “Naomi has been constantly travelling between Australia and Peru, so she has been getting used to life in Oz in small doses! She is doing excellently, but the different food over here is still a bit of a challenge for her. Language (especially Aussie slang, which is not covered in standard English courses) is also difficult for her. Thanks to modern technology such as Skype, Whatsapp and Facebook however, she is able to be in close contact with her family and friends in Peru which has helped her settle, but she does particularly miss her mum, dad, little sister and most of all... her French Bulldog ‘Brucey’! Having said that, we do NOT miss the traffic of Lima. If you think the gridlock in Hastings Street on a Saturday in the middle of the Christmas school holidays is bad, just try to navigate the rush hour traffic in Lima!” So, what’s next on the agenda for this daring couple? “When we decided to move to Noosa, I pictured my day starting and ending with a swim in Laguna Bay, but we are so busy with the store, the house renovation and Naomi's English lessons that we haven't seen the beach in over a week, and Armano Collections is just metres away on Hastings Street! “Once things have settled down, Naomi wants to study jewellery design, and we would also love to develop the

business to be self-sustaining, hopefully opening a chain of other similar stores in wellknown luxury tourist centres in addition. Our mission is to be successful in everything we set our minds to, with our daily motto to try to do better than yesterday.” With many people cracking under the pressure of a move interstate, let alone a move to the other side of the world, Damien and Naomi are two game changers who have shown that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. From economic geology and modelling in a city of nine million, to running a retail business on the shores of one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia (complete with a totally new culture and language), here is a couple who make it look easy, and there’s nothing more inspiring. “Success is about achieving happiness within yourself, and Naomi and I certainly love nothing more than a challenge!”

Stylemaker... Elizabeth McMillan
From the catwalks of Paris, to the fashion houses of Sydney, to the cosmo glamour of Noosa, Elizabeth McMillan is a stylemaker who knows how to vogue, as Coco Seymour-Griffin reveals.
Elizabeth McMillan always knew her destiny was in fashion. Having grown up in Sydney, Elizabeth was surrounded by good taste, beautiful materials, high-end designers and a commitment to creativeness that infused her psyche, and gave her an innate eye for style.
E
ven as a young child, I viewed clothing as an expression of who you were and what you represented. As a girl, I used to dress-up in my mother’s long coats, complete with fur collars and pearls. The detail, the quality, and the way you feel when you put something on – this is what fashion is all about. It is art. Even today, I browse through the beautiful designer boutiques and fashion houses in Europe as if I am in an art gallery.”
Professionally, Elizabeth’s career reads like a fashion novel. Having been headhunted by a well-known Australian fashion company to manage one of their flagship stores in Sydney when she was 21, she became the youngest and most successful manager and stylist on their books, and was soon asked to join a private designer and fashion company in Paddington, which she did. For the next six years, Elizabeth worked her fingers to the bone, adding manufacturing, designing, overseas buying, agent wrangling and collection building to her set of skills, and as she approached the age of 30, she knew it was time for the next challenge. Moving from Sydney to Noosa, Elizabeth launched herself onto the scene, and at the age of 33 set up her import company and retail outlet, Eliza’s Boutique in Netanya Resort on Hasting Street, importing labels from France, Italy and Germany that were not available anywhere else in Australia, and also designing her own in-store fashion label. It was a huge hit, and before long, Elizabeth was opening her second store, Vestiario in the Tingirana Resort, also stocking exclusive European labels. Seventeen years on, Elizabeth is still going strong. “ Travelling to the Milan, Paris and Berlin fashion shows two or three times per year, sussing out trends, stocking exclusive labels, styling looks and working pieces, I am living my dream. The fashion industry is intoxicating, fun, creative and challenging. I see work as some see playing golf. I love my job. I love the serious business of running a business – the ups and downs, and the ever-evolving nature of fashion. It always keeps me interested and excited. Hard work is fulfilling and inspirational. It makes every day a good day. I believe my success has been due to the rarity of the labels I source, the quality I strive for, and the service I provide – with professional stylists who genuinely care.” Motivated by colour, texture, cut, images and stories, it is clear that Elizabeth lives style, like many breathe. Creatively energized by the global iconic fashion houses, along with pieces such as the Chanel jacket or the Kelly bag, Elizabeth knows the language of fashion inside and out, a gifted visionary who has women from all over the world coming to Noosa for styling advice.

Paddle your way to a cracking Celebrity Body with Stand Up Paddle Boarding Surfing legend Tom Carroll shares the tricks of the trade to sweating it out on a SUP...
s one of the most effective cross training activities you can do, it’s no wonder celebs such as Jennifer H a w k i n s , Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConaughey and Australia’s ultimate bachelor, Tim Robards, have been snapped SUPing up a storm. And, as an activity that’s super fun and simple for almost anyone to master, it’s no surprise that SUPing is quickly becoming the most popular water sport around.
A
“Anyone who tries stand up paddling for the first time will feel the effects the next day,” said Australian surfing legend, Tom Carroll, who has recently launched his own range of high performance Stand Up Paddle Boards – Tom Carroll Paddle Surf, through Global Surf Industries. “What’s great about stand-up, is it’s a full body workout. When you’re paddling hard, everything is working – your lats, your back, your shoulders, your arms, even your hands and feet. Think about doing 1,500 side sit-ups with rotations per hour. That’s pretty much what you do when you go for a hard stand up paddle workout,” he said. Here are Tom’s tips for getting the most out of a SUP workout: 1. It's All About Technique: “As with most sports, technique is really important when it comes to mastering the SUP,” says Carroll. He suggests taking a lesson, getting a coach or watching a training video when starting out.“This way, you’re likely to get the hang of things more swiftly, then you’ll be able to get the most of paddling by starting out with excellent technique and setting up good muscle memory from the outset.” 2. Get On The Right Board:

With surf, racing, flat water and all-rounder SUPs available, Carroll emphasises the importance of choosing a board that is appropriate for your skill level. “The Allrounder style is best for most beginners and a good board to start out on is the Adventure Paddleboarding Bamboo All Rounder SUP. If you’re a little more advanced and are keen to mix up flatwater SUPing with some wave riding, opt for the Adventure Paddleboarding Sixty Forty SUP, and if you’re really advanced and want to get some serious wave action while working out, try my Tom Carroll Paddle Surf Long Grain SUP,” he said. 3. The Perfect Paddle: “The type of paddle you use is equally as important as the board itself and when you’re holding a paddle for an hour or more, the weight of the paddle is critical,” says Carroll. “It’s well worth investing in a top of the line carbon paddle that’s super light and easy to manoeuvre.” Carroll recommends the Trident Adjustable Carbon paddle. 4. Size It Up: “It’s important to select a board according to your weight,” says Carroll. “If you’ve got too much length, it will be much harder to push all that extra board around.” Carroll suggests using the manufacturer’s suggested rider weights as a guide and then having a good chat with your retailer before choosing your board length. 5. Heads Up: According to Carroll, the reason you can lose balance when leaning too far forward or leaning over the board is because of the significant weight of your head, compared to the rest of your body. “Keep your gaze up and become aware of the horizontal plane ahead and practice resisting the temptation to control by looking downward to the board, this does two things. One it keeps your head over the centre of balance and two, it increases awareness of where you are. Also by maintaining a slight bend at your knees you will create natural shock absorbers, keep shoulders centred over your hips, and feel the movement throughout your body,

like a dance with the water, this starts the process of awakening your stabilisers. And, before you know it your up and going!” he says. 6. Hit It Up: To up the ante on your SUP workout, Carroll suggests incorporating some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). He suggests repeating the below routine five to 10 times per paddling session to get “one hell of a workout.” Always warm up at moderate pace (approx 60%), within our best form stroke for 10- 15mins (minimum)
1. Paddle 100% for one minute. 2. Paddle at 80% of your fastest pace for three more minutes. 3. Rest one minute. 4. Repeat five to 10 times 5. Paddle at a slow pace for 10mins 6. Stretch to cool down For more information or to find your nearest stockist, check out www.surfindustries.com

hen it comes to the modern day conundrum of the family work/life balance, the landscape is changing. With women now leaving the commercial professions in droves in order to set up their own businesses from home to ensure they can spend quality time with their young families, micro-enterprises are popping up all over the place, with a radical and exciting effect on the marketplace. “Before I has kids, I had a corporate high flying career, doing lots of international travel, working extremely long hours and keeping up with very demanding workload,” says Michelle Smith, founder of Start Up Mum, a community for mums in business in Australia. “When I fell pregnant, I decided that I didn't want to continue such a lifestyle, so I quit my job and started my own business doing marketing and business consulting. It allowed me to be able to work from home during the hours I wanted to work.” And it’s it not just those wishing to simplify their busy work life who are setting up desks at home. Many women are also finding that being a stay at home mum has unleashed their inner creative, unlocking earning power via a revenue stream previously untapped. “Having to stay at home with my daughter was the best thing

that could have happened to me, as I was able to channel my creativity into a successful business,” confirms Leanne Southall of online organic baby store, Bonnetfriend. “I was a process engineer by degree, and had a well paid position for five years before my maternity leave,” adds Olga Dudina, who now makes money through her own brand of handmade baby pram accessories and bespoke nursery decors. “After being on maternity leave with my first child, I was made redundant, but decided to use the opportunity to swap the office suit and computer for a more casual (and comfortable) pair of jeans and a sewing machine! I had a huge passion for sewing, so it was a natural place to start in trying to bring home some additional income. I am so happy being free from office life, instead I am doing what I love. And the best part? I get to spend as much time as I want with my son!” From someone who has done exactly that (I moved from commercial law in the city, to journalism by the beach) after having babies, I totally get where these women are coming from. Ambitious, intelligent and determined, it is little wonder such yummy mummies are thinking outside the box in manifesting the lives they want to lead, while also earning a lucrative income. “Most women don't want to walk away from their careers, but do want to do something where they have the flexibility to be at home with their children working family friendly hours,” confirms Michelle. It can be done, and it is being done. With the world a captive market at the touch of a button, and clients just a Facetime call away, it’s all there for the taking – if you have the vision.

Baby nutrition guru Ambassador Lucy-Belle Transitioning baby onto solid food is an exciting time as they enter the culinary world. It can also be a daunting one, but with a few simple tricks and these nutritious foods as a base, it can be easy and fun for the both you and your baby.
Nutrition
When introducing solids at 4-6 months, breast milk or formula remains the main source of nutrition with solids complimenting breast milk or formula, not replacing it. This is an important time for the development of the fine motor skills required for eating and where the shaping of eating behaviours which carry on into later life, begins. Nutritionally, the main priority at this age for the baby is iron. At birth, baby enters the world with adequate storage of the iron it has received via the mother during pregnancy. By six months of age, these stores are depleted and need to be replenished . By weight, the sixth month old baby’s iron requirements are higher than an adult. One way in which you can ensure baby receives adequate iron is fortified rice cereal. Recently there has been a movement by some parents away from rice cereal (which is fortified with iron), with some parents concerned that it may cause obesity. But this is a simplistic view based on only one doctor’s opinion rather than any evidence as such. Many factors contribute to childhood obesity, just one food. Certainly if babies were feeding only rice cereal and in large amounts, the carbohydrate load would be too great. But as part of a varied diet containing fruit, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, some protein and good fats, rice cereal can fit in nicely as a first introduction to solids. Considering the short time-frame it is used for, the benefits to the baby’s brain and overall development far outweigh any risk of obesity. Look for iron fortified brown rice or oat cereal, and mix with vegetables, meat or fruit. Other iron rich foods include cooked red meat (pureed or mashed depending on age) lentils and beans.
Lucy-Belle’s favourite menu (6-8 months)
SWEET POTATO OR PUMPKIN Remove the skin and chop into pieces. Bake in a 180 degree oven on a tray lined with baking paper for 20-30 minutes. As with all baby foods, there is no need to add salt or oil. For baby: Blended on its own or mix with rice/oat cereal or left-over cooked rice from your dinner the night before. It’s also great as finger foods (depending on stage of development.) For you: Toss through salads with parmesan cheese or as a side dish to accompany dinner. Also perfect as a quick snack. STEAK: For baby: Large pieces of cooked steak are great finger foods to
30
NoosaStyleLiving
experiment and develop the fine motor skills. Monitor closely, particularly when baby has teeth. The steak can also be pureed and added to any left-over pumpkin puree. For older babies, chop into pieces for finger foods or combine with chopped baked pumpkin. For you: Serve for dinner with baked sweet potato or pumpkin and other vegetables. Serve left-over steak cold the next day, sliced thinly on top of a salad for lunch. AVOCADO: For baby: This was Lucy-Belle’s first food, perfect for its smooth creamy texture and packed full of healthy fats. Serve on its own, or mixed with pureed pumpkin or sweet potato. For you: Avocado on toast makes the perfect snack or tossed through a salad for a good dose of healthy fats and energy.
Let them explore
Letting babies explore food and built their love of food by offering them control and ownership, makes for less fussy eaters. Research has shown that children who eat a wide variety of foods are less likely to develop obesity at a later age. Pieces of food that they can hold in their hand, such as large carrot or celery sticks from the fridge, are perfect for developing hand-eye co-ordination and are great at soothing teething gums. The ‘Noobie nibbler’ is a great tool for enabling your child explore food, available from all supermarkets. Pieces of food such as steak or fruit are placed inside the mesh bag and baby is free to suck on the bag, exploring the taste of the food without having to worry about baby choking. Keep in mind that a baby often needs to be exposed to a new food up to ten times before they will accept it. If a baby refuses to eat a certain food, it is important to keep offering that food every couple of days.
Let there be mess
It’s inevitable that babies will make mess and studies have shown that the more a baby is able to play with and enjoy food, the less likely they are to be a fussy eater. A baby whose mother is constantly getting anxious or angry at meal times ‘Aaargh, you spilled broccoli all over the floor AGAIN’ can quickly develop fear and anxiety associated with eating. As hard as it is to have the floor covered in broccoli, give in to the mess and let baby explore. Make sure you eat too Being a new parent, it’s hard to find the time to take care of yourself. With the endless washing, sleepless nights, and floor covered in broccoli, this is an important time where you need regular healthy food for optimum energy and mental alertness. You can ensure both you and bub are looked after by cooking foods that both of you can enjoy, making extra-large batches to be used across several different meals such as those listed below.
POACHED FRUIT: Simply chop fruit such as pear, apricots, peaches or apples and cook in a saucepan with a splash of water on low heat until fruit is softened. For baby: Puree the fruit for younger babies or leave as is, according to developmental stage. Serve on its own, mixed through prepared rice/oat cereal or mixed with meat. For you: Add to your porridge for breakfast or it makes a delicious dessert served with yoghurt. PORRIDGE Make a large batch using only water (no milk, sugar or honey added) for you and baby to enjoy. Porridge is a wonderfully nutritious food for mothers as well as babies as it contains fibre and a good source of carbohydrate for energy. Oats help boost milk supply, making it perfect for breastfeeding mothers. It keeps well in
the fridge for a couple of days, making it the perfect food for time-poor parents. For baby: You may wish to puree the porridge or serve as is, depending on stage of development. Add some of the poached fruit you have prepared earlier. It can be blended with other fruits or vegetables for baby and For you: To fuel your busy day ahead serve warm with your choice of milk, crushed nuts such as macadamia or walnuts, honey or maple syrup, sunflower seeds and a little natural yoghurt. BANANA For baby: Mashed or mixed with rice/oat cereal For you The perfect portable snack full of vitamin B for energy. Throw them into a smoothie with your choice of milk and a little honey, or on top of your porridge

Well being
NS The one thing many mothers will tell you when you are expecting your first child, is that “you will learn to operate on very little sleep”. I am not sure that anything anyone says, can actually prepare you for the first few weeks and months of having your newborn home. However, we still find ourselves amazed by what we manage to do during the day on such little sleep (although often forgetting when yesterday ended and today began).
ALWAYS AT TOOTSIE’S
Goodnight... W
hen sleep deprived, we are likely to experience both physical and mental changes, including lowered stress tolerance, mood changes, exhaustion, irritability, impaired ability to sustain attention and concentration, forgetfulness, and neglecting our own needs (i.e. regular food, drinking plenty of water, and connecting with supports) to name a few. One way many people (particularly parents) mediate their exhaustion seems to be to increase caffeine consumption; which can cause its own set of sleep issues, such as making it difficult to fall asleep at night. As you can see, it can become quite the vicious cycle of sleep deprivation, poor self-care, increase caffeine, sleep difficulties and so on. One tip is to limit your caffeine intake after midday to reduce the chances of your nightly sleep being affected. As parents, and busy people in general, it can be so easy to neglect our self-care whilst rushing through the day tending to the needs of our children or schedules. I am sure you have heard how important it is to take care of yourself during these times; however, I would like to help by providing some practical strategies to maximise your sleep. Anyone, particularly a new parent, will likely find that following some simple strategies, can help with the adjustment to your new sleep routine. The following strategies are called sleep hygiene techniques; and are designed to help form better sleep habits. Nap when baby naps. I am acutely aware that this is easier said than done. However, if you are able to get even a 20 minutes nap, this can help to recharge your mind and body during the day.

Relaxation. If you are having difficulties in falling asleep when baby sleeps, relaxation exercises can be beneficial. One strategy is the diaphragmatic breathing technique. To do this, take a deep breath through your nose for a count of three seconds, hold for one second, and slowly exhale through your mouth for four seconds. This technique helps to activate your body’s parasympathetic nervous system, also known as your relaxation response. Creating a sleep routine. When baby has gone to sleep for the evening, this is the best time for you to unwind and begin to create your own sleep rituals. Developing a sleep ritual can include adding some strategies in the half hour to hour prior to your desired bedtime. Creating familiar routines can help prepare the mind and body for sleep. An example of such a routine could include, having a shower or bath (lavender is a popular scent for the promotion of relaxation), slipping into bed and engaging in diaphragmatic breathing exercises for a few minutes. If you have not fallen asleep in approximately 20 minutes, hop out of bed and go to another room and sit quietly. Try doing some relaxation exercises until you feel drowsy again, and return to bed. This
Sleep Tight... trains the body to recognise that the bed is for sleep through association. Enhance your sleep environment. Some of the things we can be guilty of when going to bed is watching TV, playing on our phone or laptop, and watching the clock, which is actually restimulating your brain. To maximise your sleep environment, turn the TV off, put the book down, turn the phone on sleep mode and turn the clock around. The bedroom should be used for sleep and sex only. Share the duties. If and where possible, share the load with your partner, friends or family. This can allow you to catch up on sleep, have some time for yourself to relax, or even have a shower. Avoid co-sleeping with baby. When I say co-sleeping, I mean having the baby in the bed with you, as this practice has been associated with an increase risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). If you want baby close to you, consider having a cot, bassinet or cradle in the room with you. Please ensure that your baby sleep products (including beds) have been approved by the SIDS Australia/Australian Safety standards for baby sleeping. SIDS and Kids ÂŽ has also created a phone app by the same title, which details more thoroughly, the safe sleep guidelines for babies and children (available through iTunes). Sleep training. If your baby is experiencing difficulties sleeping, or you are find yourself wanting some advice and support, sleep training may be an option for you. Sleep training for babies can be as structured as you like, and there are plenty of books and online resources to provide you with information on this topic. Furthermore, if sleep training is something you are interested in, contact your local child health nurse, GP or private hospital for more details. Finally, remember to be kind to yourself. There will be ups and downs during the newborn and beyond stages, and parenthood can be both rewarding and challenging. If you are feeling overwhelmed, please ask for help. Your GP can recommend various options, and you can also contact Lifeline (13 11 14). For parenting support information, you can also contact Parentline (1300 301 300). The slow but certain hand of nature can be found at work on the often breathtaking beauty of the impressive Noosa River. he Noosa River forms the natural artery through the heartland of the region and provides a haven for safe swimming and waterbased activities. Shady banks provide perfect picnic spots or departure points for leisurely cruises through myriad tributaries, wetlands and lakes that lead to the mystical black waters of the Everglades. Wildlife abounds especially in this protected habitat. Across the river on the North Shore, a four-wheel drive will take you along a pristine beach past the coloured sands of Teewah, the time-worn shipwreck of the Cherry Venture and eventually to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island via a short ferry ride. Closer to Noosa the Noosa Marina is a destination you shouldn’t miss. As the sun rises, it not unusual to see kids sitting on the end of the wharf wishing for more than a tiddler on the line, watching charter boats head to the outer reef for a serious day’s fishing and hoping one day they’ll be old enough to be on board. Adjacent to the 40-berth Marina, skateboarders ramp it up before school in Spray Park, the Noosa Ferry prepares to leave for all-day and evening services to Noosa Heads with drop-offs and pick-ups along the way, while aromas of coffee, bacon and toast pervade the salty air. The Noosa Marina is almost ready for another busy day. Set against the backdrop of the tranquil blue-green waters of the Noosa River and with picturesque views whichever way you look, the Marina’s naturally nautical look and village atmosphere are complemented by 20 specialty retailers, five boat cruising options from charter boat hire and self-drive house boats to leisure specialists plus eight restaurants and cafes. detox programs Along the pathways from the Marina, across the Doonella Bridge and the Noosa Waters’ canal bridge, or just one ferry stop away, is Noosaville and part of the Noosa River, which in the main runs parallel to Gympie Terrace. From sun-up along the river or the “golden mile” as it’s known to the locals, tai-chi and yoga enthusiasts welcome the day, joggers, walkers and pooches on leads share the pathways, and cyclists sweat it out on a dedicated track which extends from the river, loops around the canals of Noosa Waters or via the mangroves and creeks to Noosa Junction. Along the foreshore information centres book tours to Fraser Island, jazz cruises and the romantic Gondola, ducks waddle along the water’s edge, flapping pelicans thrust their beaks under water looking for a feed or join seagulls onshore hoping for leftovers. Hiring a kayak or jet ski, charter a barbecue pontoon, putt-putt, fishing tinnie or stand-up paddle board. Along Gympie Terrace and around each corner are bike hires, side-by-side boutiques, book shops, world class restaurants, cafes, takeaway food, gelaterias, day spas, hairdressers, homewares shops, liquor supplies and art galleries. At each end of the esplanade are smart restaurants and the Tewantin side has the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, not only a social hub but a hit with kids wishing to learn how to sail. Other precincts nearby such as Gibson Road and Gateway Drive offer wide-ranging options from homewares, sporting goods, pamper places, a supermarket and a large national brand selling computer equipment and furniture to warehouse-style shops selling high-end fashion, recycled furniture, classy jewellery and a wellknown art gallery. Margot Robbie & Will Smith
A Queensland girl setting the world on fire… Life is a little different these days for Gold Coast girl Margot Robbie…with several award-winning movies already under her belt, and more in production, Robbie is living the life - but she hasn’t let all the fame go to her head. Although Margot now calls London home, she's still the natural unassuming, Queensland girl - happy to come back home, catch up with family and friends, visit the beach for a swim, eat at her favourite restaurants, and get back to basics.
S
o different from frolicking nude with Leonardo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street or getting cosy with Alexander Skarsgård in the upcoming Tarzan remake. Margot Robbie has no problems being the object of lustful desire. Now she's cavorting with Will Smith in Focus, a clever new comedy/thriller in which she plays the understudy to Will Smith's master con artist. Smart and self-assured, the blonde Aussie bombshell is taking the road to Hollywood stardom one step at a time. "I'm enjoying every moment of this time in my life,” Robbie says. "I've been working pretty much non-stop and it's been so much fun. I've been very lucky in terms of working with some incredible actors and even though it sometimes seems unreal, it's also what I've spent years preparing for. Now it's a matter of taking advantage of these opportunities." In Focus, Robbie plays Jess Barrett, an ambitious young woman and pickpocket who receives on-the-job training in the art of grifting from Will Smith's Nicky Spurgeon, a professional conman/thief planning a major heist. Along the way, they engage in the kind of banter that gives the film a lighthearted flair to accompany the high stakes action. The film gives Robbie yet another chance to shine opposite a big Hollywood star by sharing centre stage with Will Smith, an A-lister in need of a big hit after a series of embarrassing flops. By all accounts, Robbie and Smith had great chemistry during the making of the film, so much so, that they were even linked romantically, even though those tabloid rumours were immediately shot down - and Margot tweeted that they were simply "goofing" around during a break on the set. Robbie spent most of last summer shooting Tarzan in London (set for release in 2016) and is now working on a new film, The Taliban Shuffle, co-starring Martin Freeman and Tina Fey, about a journalist recounting her experiences covering the war in Afghanistan. Later this year Robbie begins shooting The Suicide Squad, an action film which reteams her with Will Smith alongside a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Jesse Eisenberg, Jared Leto, and Cara Delevingne.
We asked Margot a few questions to bring our readers up to speed... Q: Things seem to be happening so fast for you? ROBBIE: Yes, and it's been surprising. I came to Los Angeles with a plan. While I was finishing out my contract on Neighbours, I was saving my money and working with dialect coaches to get my American accent right, mainly hoping that I could find enough work and live cheaply enough so I wouldn't have to move back (to Melbourne). Then Pan Am came along, and then Wolf of Wall Street, and suddenly you know that you are going to be able to meet the right people and not waste too much time struggling in going to auditions and trying to get people to notice you. Q: Are you one of those individuals who knew from an early age that acting was something that you wanted to do with your life? ROBBIE: (Laughs) I was always performing for my mum. I spent a
42
NoosaStyleLiving
lot of time watching videos and memorising scenes that I would reenact in the kitchen while my mum was wondering what I was going on about. (Laughs) But that was my early training and I just kept at it. I was always imagining myself performing and what it would be like to be on a set. I love being able to get to do what was always in my heart. Q: You're viewed as one of Hollywood's most beautiful women. Do you like the attention that comes with that kind of perception? ROBBIE: I've never thought of myself in those terms. I take it as a huge compliment, of course, and it helps open doors. But I grew up feeling very unattractive especially as a teenager, when I had braces on and I was wearing glasses. I was very skinny and gangly, and I always thought there were so many other girls in school who were so much prettier than me. I was lucky that I had a pretty glamorous role in Wolf and that's how most people saw me for the first time. Q: Are you wary of taking on roles where your looks are the focus? ROBBIE: I won't take parts where the female character has no substance and nothing to offer. Even with Naomi (in Wolf of Wall Street) I made sure she had different layers and that there was a lot more to her than what was in the script when I first read it. But Marty and Leo were very supportive of making her as strong as possible. Q: Which actresses do you respect the most or whose careers you would like to emulate? ROBBIE: I admire the way Cate Blanchett has built her career. She's done such excellent work and been in so many great films, while being able to enjoy a very quiet private life. You never read anything about her in the tabloids - and I would like to follow that approach and keep my personal life as private as possible. Q: Do you stay in touch with other Aussie actresses? ROBBIE: I've met quite a few in Los Angeles and it's been good for me to be able to talk to other actors about their experiences in coming to L.A. and establishing themselves. I feel like I have a lot of support here and it's nice to be able to feel that you're part of this Aussie community and you're following in the footsteps of so many wonderful actors. Q: Margot, what was it like working with Will Smith on Focus? ROBBIE: Will was really good fun and wonderful to be around. There were many times in the film where he would have to be very serious and then we'd be playing a scene for big laughs. It made for an interesting atmosphere and you learn a lot from someone who's so good at being able to switch so effortlessly between comedy and drama. Q: You've also been working on another big film, Tarzan, with Alexander Skarsgård? Will we see you and Tarzan high up in the trees in the jungle? ROBBIE: No. It's not about tracking down Tarzan in the jungle. It's a different take on the traditional Tarzan story and it happens later on in his life but it's a great adventure and love story. I'm thrilled to be part of it. Somehow I don’t think our world famous, Queensland girl will have any trouble continuing her career well into the future.

With a line-up that includes a special one-off performance by Opera Australia, an evening with the Queensland Ballet and David Williamson’s new play Dream Home, which he is directing, Festival Director Ian Mackellar has said that the 2015 event had now grown to 13 days to accommodate the program and will be presented between 14 and 26 July 2015.
L
ast year’s festival was undoubtedly a hard act to follow with more than 10,000 visitors to 35 venues and locations, but we’ve worked hard to lift the bar even higher in 2015 and are thrilled to have Opera Australia perform a fully staged production of its acclaimed opera The Magic Flute to the Sunshine Coast for the first time ever,” Mr Mackellar said. “This is a real coup for the Sunshine Coast community and is bound to attract visitors from around Australia.” The Magic Flute cast and orchestra will perform a full scale production of the last opera ever written by
Mozart at the Noosa Leisure Centre on Tuesday 14, July as the opening event for Noosa Long Weekend Festival 2015. “The production is set in the 1930s, complete with authentic-looking Egyptian tomb set and sensational 1930s costumes. The stage will come alive with colour and movement, as our hero embarks on a quest to find wisdom and true love,” Mr Mackellar said. "The Noosa production of The Magic Flute will be sung in English and performed with a chamber orchestra, as well as a choir of local Noosa children." Other festival highlights include An Evening with the Queensland Ballet led by artistic director Li Cunxin (author of autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer), as well as an exclusive performance by internationally acclaimed concert pianist and Steinway artist Julian Gargiulo (direct from New York’s Carnegie Hall), and the Queensland premiere of David Williamson’s play Dream Home. “We’re also thrilled to be welcoming star of The Voice 2014 Jackson Thomas in concert, as well as energetic and talented entertainer Rob Mills.” Mr Mackellar said the 2015 Noosa Long Weekend Festival would feature more than 75 events at various locations around Noosa including literature events, forums, live music, theatre performances, interactive art, films, cabaret and supper clubs.

Body Pop The creative genius behind Gotye’s iconic ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ music video, as well as commissioned artist for Tiffany & Co, Paspaley Pearl and Mont Blanc, Emma Hack is an internationally renowned creative with a punch. And she’s coming to Noosa. Coco Seymour-Griffin reports.
D
iverse multimedia artist. Skin illustrator. Photographer. Sculptor. Emma Hack is all of these things. But it is her uniquely talented and bewitchingly clever approach to refined body paint camouflage that has her currently revered as THE go-to girl for visual narrative and magic realism – a label of credibility seldom bestowed by the art world unless it has been truly earned. And truly earned it has. A worldwide phenomenon, Emma has captured the attention of collectors globally, jetting across seas to exhibit in New York, London, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Brussels, Aspen, The Hamptons, and Milan just this year alone, with no signs of slowing down. A self-proclaimed ‘dreamer’ from Adelaide who has striven to create beyond what others have achieved, and someone who has made it her purpose to never stop evolving, Emma is an artist on a mission to make the universe a more inspired place.
And it’s a calling she is accomplishing with ease. “I started face painting children when I was 15, and immediately loved the way skin changed with ink. I studied makeup as I got older, and my teacher advised me to extend my skills to the rest of the body. Once I started body painting, that was it. I was hooked!” The first professional body painter in Australia, Emma initially struggled for work, but as word of her talents got round, she suddenly she found she had jobs that were being created specifically for her. “Before the work started coming in, I created purely for fun in various studios with some great photographers. This went on for a few years, but after I created my body art calendar in 1999 with a team of enthusiastic photographers and stylists, I was commissioned to work on a celebrity chef calendar and a Paralympic calendar. From there, I created my first solo

camouflage exhibition in 2002, where I created bodies formed into flowers. I began travelling overseas and was soon getting work in Hong Kong, Dubai, Canada and Europe as one of the main body painters in the world! Clients would send for me.” As Emma became more well known, her art practice became more intricate, and in 2005 she created arguably her best known work of all time – her wallpaper series in which she painstakingly camouflaged the human form by hand painting her models into the remarkable designs of the late Florence Broadhurst. The results were mesmerising, and truly established Emma as a high-end serious contender. It wasn’t long before high profile commercial contracts came knocking … “In 2011, Natasha Pincus, the director of Gotye’s music video to ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, approached me to see if I could create stop motion body art for the film clip. I had wanted to create in this way for many years, so I was thrilled to finally have the opportunity to do so – and on a large scale! “Wally (Gotye) and I chose the artwork based on his father’s design. It was a sentimental choice. The colours were picked to be different in each of the characters’ ‘worlds’. I had to paint a couple of dots, move out of the shot, wait for the photo to be captured and then repeat. The process was extremely hard. Colours were mixed and matched as the shoot progressed over the 23 hours on set. It was all worth it however, as the video was a huge success and went viral (viewed by over 550 million people worldwide), helping push body art as a form of expression. Later that year, I went on to create ‘Body Crash’ for the Motor Accident Commission – a sculptural car made of 17 bodies – for an advertisement, creating a new direction for body art again. I felt proud that boundaries were at last shifting.”
Collaborating again with Gotye to create a work for the Art Series Hotel Charity Auction at ART Melbourne 2012, Emma counts her collaboration with the band among her favourite projects, with her commission by the West Australian Ballet, where she had to create a series of striking images inspired by the element mercury, also included. “I painted 21 dancers of the West Australian Ballet silver, and sculpted them into five separate structures to represent Artistic Director Aurelien Scannella's 2014 season. I was so happy with the results.” With major launches for Tiffany & Co, Paspaley Pearl and Mont Blanc also listed in her achievements, Emma has managed to gain the respect of both fellow creatives and corporates alike – a rarity in the art world. So what is next on the agenda for this entrepreneur? “I am putting together something totally new in my Emma Hack Gallery studio in Adelaide. I think it’s important to evolve your practice as much as possible to grow as an artist. I am also committed to The Emma Hack Art Prize which I started in 2014 to give back to the South Australia Art Community and to showcase emerging artists. “And of course, I’m coming to the Australian Body Art Festival in Eumundi this May, which is a true celebration of the body art craft. The theme is Pop Trashion for 2015 – which is about allowing fashion to reinvent itself on the human canvas. It’s exciting for artists to come together and share their knowledge. I will be showcasing my work and application in front of an audience, motivating younger artists and explaining my journey. This is the first time I have featured, so I am greatly looking forward to it.” NB: The Australian Body Art Festival this year due to staging issues will now be on FRIDAY 16 - SUNDAY 18 October 2015. at Eumundi Amphitheatre and surrounds. • Start by parting hair into a deep
side part. A great trick is following the highest arch of your brow to make the part. Then I applied Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse from roots to ends. Rough dry the hair with hands until it is 100% dry. Next take small sections of hair and curl them with a ½ barrel curling iron. Continue this all over the head until all of the hair is completely curled. Then spray Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong to set the hair. Once cooled, brush the hair smooth with Moroccan oil Boar Bristle Classic Brush and create height at the crown by back combing that area. Then pulling the hair tight on one side and secured with a ponytail. Take a tiny section of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around the ponytail to cover the elastic. Let the other side of the hair cascade down into a 1920’s wave. Finish the look by smoothing the hair with Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream and then lock in the style with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong.

A little bit of history.... Maids of Honour Tarts‌ THIS Easter marks the 500th anniversary of Hampton Court Palace in London - and their historic Maids of Honour tarts are on the celebratory menu. ewens Tea House in Kew, West London - the UK's oldest Tea House and on-site bakery - is the home of the original Maids of Honour tarts, delicate pastries which changed the course of history, when Henry VIII discovered Anne Boleyn eating them in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace, while he was still married to first wife Catherine of Aragon. Henry declared the recipe so delicious that he locked it away, with the maid who baked them, only allowing both out to bake Maids of Honour for the Royal Court. The recipe remained a secret for 200 years, until it was leaked by a palace cook, to John Billet, a baker in nearby Richmond. In 1850, John Newens, a former Billet’s apprentice, opened his own shop in nearby town Richmond, taking with him the secret Maids of Honour recipe he learned as a student. The Newens family continue to bake the original recipe Maids of Honour tarts to this day from Newens Tea House opposite Kew Gardens. Newens is now operating a second branch in Kuala Lumpur to continue this illustrious history. LIVINGQueen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Previous Newens customers include War-time Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and more recently Simon Cowell, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. These delectable little curd cheese tarts have been recreated around the world - with many bakers thinking that they have found the perfect recipe. Full of buttery goodness - some with a hidden raspberry jam heart. Unfortunately we don't have the 'original' recipe for our readers - but it is an entertaining piece of trivia for tart lovers the world over.

Spreading the love at Costa Noosa Espresso...
A
n award-winning gourmet coffee lounge and roasting house at Sunshine Beach has become a favourite meeting place for locals and tourists alike. Owners Angela and Gavin Piper have created a coffee lover's oasis that fits perfectly into the village atmosphere of Sunshine Beach, where the aromas of freshly roasting coffee hypnotically call out to passers by - those on their early morning or afternoon walk, swimmers returning from the nearby beach, energetic cyclists needing their caffeine hit, business types on their way to work or a meeting - and those just looking to find a quiet haven where the cares of the world can be ignored. Gavin was drawn to the role of head roaster, and has tirelessly experimented to perfect bean combinations and roasting times, to create the signature blends that Costa Noosa's clients have come to love. And, he definitely must be doing something right, because he keeps winning awards! Including Silver and Bronze awards in the CSR Golden Bean Australian Competition and
recently adding Bronze awards for Australian, Esperro and Syphon coffee to their tally. Espresso Noosa, is Costa Noosa's signature blend, lovingly crafted from green beans imported from South America and then roasted on premises. This blend offers drinkers a rich and velvety creme with a smooth, full-bodied flavour. Other blends and single origin coffees are sourced on the Atherton Tableland in Nth Qld, as well as exotic locations in Peru and Nicaragua. As Gavin says "the perfect coffee needs a basis of quality green beans, lovingly roasted to bring out their premium flavour, and the art of a qualified barista to attain the right outcome - every time." Add to that the gourmet selection of dainty cakes and slices waiting to tempt you from under the large glass domes on the counter, and you'll find temptation becomes a way of life when you visit Costa Noosa. ow located within Belmondos Organic Market, Eumundi Meats has expanded and created a unique shopping destination. Eumundi Meats specialises in certified organic & pasture raised beef, certified organic and free range poultry, organic and free range lamb, Bangalow ‘sweet’ pork, gluten, preservative free and paleo sausages, and an extensive range of charcuterie products. Owner, Jon McMahon is a third generation butcher from Brisbane and has a philosophy that naturally farmed meats are the best. Whether its organic and free range lamb from Tasmania and Southern Victoria, grass fed beef from the NSW highlands, organic beef from Queensland’s Channel Country or organic poultry from local farm Bendele or free range poultry from Moya Valley, Jon sources only the best quality produce. Jon discusses his range of products “Our product range is sourced from across Australia with a focus on offering ethically raised, clean produce. Not everything we have is organic, it really depends on the season and our commitment to our customers is sourcing the very best of what is available for them. Our tag line we care… eat well… is in essence the ethos behind what we do and guides our decisions”. Inspired by some of the finest food stores throughout
Europe, Sydney and Melbourne, Jon and his wife Karen, have created a butchery shop with a difference. With a nod to the past, there is a definite feel of 1940’s style to the shop. On entering, customers are presented with a welcoming space to wander and look at the produce. Beautiful lighting is not typically the norm with a butcher but in Eumundi Meats, it’s a nice touch that illuminates the highly polished concrete floors, striking sandstone wall, subway tiles and bespoke feature black and white Italian tiled mural of a cow. Eumundi Meats proudly displays their manifesto – to eat real food, not packets and promises, fresh and cook with your kids, insist on ethical, cook from the heart, quit eating numbers, celebrate food together, say a loud no to GMO and spread the word. As you read this, you definitely get a feeling that Eumundi Meats is offering something special. “Whilst offering the best produce, we also wanted to create a unique shopping experience for our customers and our new location offers a spacious emporium where customers can comfortably browse and look at the produce” says Jon. Eumundi Meats also supplies a number of leading local restaurants and organic retail outlets and is open Monday to Saturday and is located at 59 Rene Street in the Belmondos Organic Market. www.eumundimeats.com.au or 07 5474 3817.

et me tell you a secret: I’ve mixed more drinks in Turkey than I’ve cooked hot dinners. I was trained as a bartender before I became a chef and, like most of my generation of Turkish hospitality students, I was inspired by the movie Cocktail (starring Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown). I found mixing drinks with ‘flair’ was a great way to get tips and to pick up chicks. Then I got serious and added cooking to my repertoire. When I opened my restaurant in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, one of my first customers was Bryan Brown, who lives round the corner. These three flashy mixtures give a nod to traditional Turkish ingredients—rakı, pomegranate and figs—and two of them have Turkish puns in their names (the Nar in Narito means pomegranate, and the Inci in Incini means fig). But they were all created within a mile of Bryan Brown.

Pan-fried Atlantic Cod presented upon Sardinian fregola salad, fetta, zucchini flower, caper berries, heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and finished with a red wine vinaigrette. As any good chef can tell you - butter makes it better. And, to prove the point chef Marc Wohner pan-fried and basted this gorgeous piece of Atlantic Cod in lots of bubbling butter! The taste was stunning and perfectly complemented the freshness of the fregola salad, where the tiny

NS AFTER THE HEADY SUMMER PARTY SEASON, IT IS TIME TO TAKE A STEP BACK AND ENJOY A FRESHER APPROACH TO ENTERTAINING. Lindeman's Early Harvest wines are 25% lighter in both alcohol and calories. With six wine styles represented in the group Sparkling; Rosé; Sauvignon Blanc; Moscato; Merlot and Shiraz - there is a perfect choice for any occasion. And, these 'taste specific' wines marry perfectly to many lighter style dishes. Why not try these two examples of the style with complementary recipes for the perfect dining experience.
Lindeman's Bin 90 Moscato
A soft pale wine with delightful fruity, sweet flavours, offering ripe, juicy grapes and subtle musk and tropical fruit notes. $9.99 Perfect is vanilla rice pudding topped with rhubarb.
Kale, Pancetta & Basil Risotto Created especially for Lindeman's by leading chef, Dominique Rizzo Serves: 4 Ingredients • 2 tbsp butter • 1 medium brown onion, finely diced • 150g speck or pancetta cut into lardons • 400g Arborio risotto rice • 80ml white wine • 1.5 litres home-made chicken stock • 400g Kale or Cavolo Nero cabbage • 50g toasted pine nuts • 25g pack fresh basil • 100g grated pecorino cheese Method: Place the stock into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Lower the heat to a simmer. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a large pot, add the finely diced onion and sweat until soft about 2 minutes. Then add in the speck or pancetta and cook for another minute. Add the risotto rice and stir to cover with the butter, pour in the wine and stir until most of the wine has been absorbed by the rice. Add in the diced kale/cavalo nero and stir. Ladle in about a cup of chicken stock and stir gently over a moderate heat until all of the stock has been absorbed. Season with a pinch of salt each time you ladle in the stock. Taste the risotto as you are cooking to test for seasoning and doneness. Continue to ladle in the stock until most of the stock has been used up and the risotto is aldente with a small bite in the centre. This should take about 20 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir through the remaining butter and the parmesan cheese. If the risotto seems to dry add in more stock as it should be wet and creamy like a good porridge but with bite.

Pair chocolate + whisky for a sweet and spirited Easter‌
W
hisky is the only spirit on the rise around the world including Australia, and it's attracting a new generation of discerning drinker. This Easter, have you considered pairing whisky and chocolate as a stunning sweet and smooth combo? Chocolate coats the mouth and tongue, blunting the taste buds, ready for whisky's complex aromas to titillate the nose, then slide over the palate for a delectable tasting experience. Internationally-acclaimed Tasmanian premium single malt whisky maker, Nant, recommends 90% dark cacao chocolate like Sisko Chocolate as a perfect companion to its liquid gold (RRP$165 for a 500mL bottle) available from nant.com.au or by the dram from a Nant Whisky Bar (Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart and coming soon to Sydney). For an Easter gift recommendation, Nant Single Cask Sherry Wood (43% alcohol) goes particularly well with chocolate - it starts with a sweet and nutty nose before tasting its delicate touch of heat and sherry undercurrent that leaves a lovely overtone of coffee to finish. Available for $165 for a 500mL bottle, it recently won a Gold medal at the World Spirit Awards in Europe. No need to stop at Easter - the cooler months are now upon us!! Tasting Guide When tasting Chocolate and Whisky together, there's a nuanced process to getting the best out of both: 1. Take the whisky on the palate, moving it around the mouth for awhile to let the flavours build. 2. Once swallowed, wait a few seconds before placing a very small piece of chocolate on the tongue. Allow the chocolate to melt slowly and experience the profiles of the Chocolate and Whisky as they come together. 3. Towards the end of the melt, take a little of the whisky back over the chocolate. This leads to greater intensity and often the development of some interesting and unexpected flavours. 4. Enjoy the finish as you normally would, only this time you will see some interesting variations in the profile of the whisky. For more info visit www.nant.com.au

Seppeltsfield est 1851 1915 Para 100 Year Old Vintage Tawny The curtains of history have been raised once again, with the unveiling of Seppeltsfield 1915 Para 100 Year Old Vintage Tawny - one of Australia's most historically significant wines.

he 1915 vintage and 37th release of the T a w n y (previously known as Australian Port), will mark the centenary observance of ANZAC - a wine remarkably crafted in the year Australian and New Zealand forces first landed at Gallipoli. Less than 550 (375ml size) bottles will be released globally. Seppeltsfield remains the only winery in the world to release a 100 year old wine every year - each vintage released having spent a century maturing in oak barrels in the Barossa Valley cellars. In a year that over 165,000 Australians
were enlisted for service in World War I, the 1915 vintage is a testament to the willingness of the Seppelt family to maintain an unbroken lineage of the wine, even during one of world’s most testing historical eras. Seppeltsfield itself has linkages to military service. Managing Director, Warren Randall, is the son and grandson of First and Second World War servicemen, recently becoming the president of the second 43rd A.I.F Battalion Club. “It is incredibly humbling to be the only estate globally to release a wine this year that’s birth coincides with when our ANZAC national spirit was first being forged”, said Mr Randall. “To think that the liquid in the bottle was created at a time when many young Australians were displaying character, courage and mateship in the face of conflict is deeply emotional for me”, he added. Mr Randall, who marches each year in honour of his father and grandfather, will travel to Gallipoli in April to be part of the ANZAC centenary program. The 1915 Para 100 Year Old Vintage Tawny will be available in two size formats - 100ml ($500) and 375ml ($1500) - both of which are presented in Jarrah timber gift boxes and are individually numbered and authenticated for collection purposes. Tastings of the 1915 vintage will also be made available at the Seppeltsfield Cellar Door. Just what any red drinker 2009 MESHACH SHIRAZ Speaks of Longevity
T
he 19th vintage (2009) Meshach Shiraz, epitomises old vine intensity and longevity, with the fruit handpicked from vines close to 100 years old, creating a deep and concentrated iconic wine with the ability to age gracefully just like Meshach Burge. “My flagship wine is close to my heart, not only because of its iconic status and
exceptional qualities, but also for historic reasons. Meshach William Burge (1843 - 1942), my great grandfather, was a central figure in establishing the Burge Family’s winemaking tradition. Aged 11 yrs, he moved from Hillcot in Wiltshire, England with his family to the Barossa, where they established a thriving viticultural wheat and sheep property near Lyndoch. This wine is a tribute to Meshach Burge and what he achieved. In addition, he lived to be 99 years-old, showing true longevity in life, so what better name for a long- living wine than Meshach”, Grant said. The 2009 was a dry vintage with lower than average rainfall over the growing season. However, this lack of rain contributed to the exceptional concentration of flavour in the grapes and overall conditions leading up to harvest were
Hunter Valley Vintage estimates soar...
Lovedale - Hunter Valley 2006 Audrey Wilkinson Museum Reserve Semillon (a Brian Agnew personal favourite) The grapes for this stylish pale yellow with hints if green wine were hand picked, then after crushing and de-stemming, the must was chilled and the juice drained off. After cold settling, the clear juice was fermented slowly and at cool temperatures in stainless steel vats to retain the fresh fruit flavours. The wine was bottled soon after fermentation and cellared in optimum conditions prior to its release. The wine offers a bouquet of citrus, lanolin and sherbet, offering a clean palate, racing acidity, excellent flavour intensity and lovely lifted citrus flavours. It is a multi-award winner and a perfect example of why the Hunter Valley has such a great reputation for Semillons. Cellaring is recommended for 15 years plus… and James Halliday rated it a 94 but with 22 gold and 15 silver medals, we think he could have gone a little higher.
Agriculture… What a fickle industry to be involved in, and after all the wine industry is an agricultural industry, given that winemakers are only as good as the fruit that a viticulturist provides them.
S
ome weeks ago there was much collective gnashing of teeth and increasingly furrowed brows amongst winemakers, as the rain tumbled down in the Hunter Valley for the fifth day in a row. Dire forecasts were being bandied about. Then the rain stopped. The sun came out. However it wasn’t the usual late January forty degrees. It was a temperate 26-28 degrees, cool by Hunter Valley vintage standards, and there was a good strong breeze, drying out the tightly bunched fruit avoiding what seemed inevitable disease. Day after day, it has continued – consistent dry warmth, ripening that precious fruit and bringing smiles and positive forecasts back amongst the winemaking fraternity. Actually it is better than that; there is talk of wonderfully ripe chardonnay fruit, and reds that have patiently waited out the rains and again started their ripening process. There is talk of the 2015 vintage actually being the quintessential
would like to find.... near perfect, producing a balanced and elegant wine. Grant said “I expect the 2009 will be one of the great vintages of the decade and a wine that will have longevity for 20 years or more”. The 2009 Meshach Shiraz has already received a gold medal at the Sydney International Wine Competition, and as always has been carefully cellared for 5 years before release to allow the intense flavours to develop further. Meshach continues to hold a leadership position amongst Australian and Barossa Shiraz and is listed on each of the main Australian wine classifications including Wine Ark’s Australia’s Most Collected Wine list, Langton’s Fine Wine Classification, and the MW Wines Top 100 Australian Wines. RRP $180.00 per bottle. Australian “cracker”! Even Semillons, long thought either picked or consigned to the ground some weeks back. Former winemaker of the year Liz Jackson from First Creek almost conspiratorially whispers – “Thommo (Winemaker, Andrew Thomas) and I still have a block out there and it is looking spectacular’. From one of the Hunter Valley’s iconic vineyards, Lakes Folly Chief Winemaker Rod Kempe “– for such a tough year our cabernet vines currently are absolutely beaming – bring on the sunshine” Bruce Tyrrell, hailing from a lineage who are ever positive - “ On Thursday we bought in some of the cleanest and best cropping chardonnay grapes we have had in years. It is going to be a great year for our Vat 47!” And so, after a roller coaster ride since early December, February sunshine, and a good forecast for the next week, you can almost hear Murray Tyrrell shouting from the grave – “Vintage of the Century!” Well not quite Mr Tyrrell, but from the jaws of despair, the Hunter Valley looks like securing a very, very good vintage. As Gus Maher, general manager of the Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association explains: Agriculture… Yes a fickle industry – but sometimes you actually do win!
Jacob’s Creek launches whisky-finished red wines Jacob’s Creek is releasing a new range of premium red wines, finished in whiskey barrels. The Double Barrel range comprises a shiraz, finished in a Scotch whisky barrel, and a cabernet sauvignon, finished in an Irish whiskey barrel. Winemakers at Jacob’s Creek sourced aged barrels that had been used to create premium whiskies for up to 20 years, and started experimenting. They discovered that the double barrel finishing process lent additional complexity and texture to wines, but it took two years of trials to get the product ready for release. “Each barrel performs differently, so it took time to understand the true effect on the wines, and achieve a result that was perfectly balanced,” said Bernard Hickin, chief winemaker at Jacob’s Creek.
Jacob's Creek Double Barrel Shiraz 2012 A luscious deep crimson wine with hypnotic purple undertone, offering a bouquet of lifted liquorice spice with dark plum and toasty notes. Here is a shiraz that is full and generous on the palate, with a beguiling mix of sweet red fruits and dark chocolate, indicative of its origins in Barossa. Subtle toasty vanillin derives from agin in traditional French and American oak prior to the careful use of aged whisky barrels which add nuances of almond husks as well as softening the dense tannins to produce a wonderful smoothness. The perfect pairing to a pan-seared Scotch Fillet of beef wrapped in smoky bacon. On this occasion veges are optional!!
Jacob's Creek Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 A rich crimson wine offering a vibrant bouquet of cassis, mint, dark olive and caramel notes. It's palate is complex and reveals assertive Coonawarra tannins that give way to a mid palate filled with ripe cassis, olive tapenade and complex briary hints. A stylish wine with excellent length layered with sweet toasty characters. Perfect accompaniment to a perfectly, caramelised rack of lamb with chargrilled eggplant and buttery mashed potatoes.

Making the most of limited outdoor spaces…
With apartment blocks dominating the city skyline and homeowners preferring larger dwellings, the size of Australian backyards continues to be compromised.
B
etween 2002 and 2012, the average block size in Australian capital cities shrunk by about 20%. In the same period, the size of the house increased by 9%, resulting in the backyard losing almost a third of its size, as homeowners looked to put the largest possible footprint on shrinking lots. More than 40% of all new homes are multi-unit dwellings, so sticking the balance between making the most of smaller outdoor spaces and enjoying our amazing year-round climate has never been more important. "Australians love the outdoors but are finding it increasingly difficult to achieve the right balance between indoor-outdoor living," explained landscape expert Jason Hodges. "No matter what size your backyard is, it's possible to create your very own urban oasis to enjoy after a hectic day in the office and to entertain family and friends. My top tip is to take time in planning and aim to create a functional outdoor sanctuary that makes the most of your outdoor space, and is the perfect getaway from the everyday." Jason offers the following tips on how to make the most of your small outdoor space: 1 Go Vertical Save space in the backyard by adding a funky and functional vertical garden to an unused wall. Layering by
colour and texture will add visual interest and make the space look even bigger. 2 Built-in-Seating A built-in seating or dining area helps give the area structure and maximises the usability of all the available space. You can achieve this via walls that double as seats - or seats that double as storage under benches. 3 Declutter A good clean-up and declutter of the backyard can give it a new lease of life. Prune or reorganise plants and get rid of anything that's out of place. Take a look at your outdoor furniture and make sure it is in scale to the rest of the yard. Keep it simple - a clean and simple backyard will give the illusion of more space. 4 Choose the Right Pavers Large format pavers work best in smaller spaces as they give the impression of space. Avoid intricate patterns and choose a neutral colour for greater impact. 5 Create Zones Zones in the backyard can create areas for eating, cooking, lounging or whatever is required. Define these zones using fencing, plants or materials such as pavers, grass or gravel to help each area stand on its own. A zoned garden will appear bigger and each area will have its own purpose. NS 1980s-Esque Interiors Forecast for Autumn 2015
Daring Colours; Accentuated Shapes: and Detailing that Plays on the ‘More is Better’ aesthetic.
A
utumn will bring a playful approach to colour and design with style taking its cues from a time when using bold, playful combinations with overtly
geometric shapes was the norm. It’s the latest prediction from leading paint company Dulux, which has released its seasonal forecast for Autumn 2015. Dulux’s Autumn palette celebrates patterns and colour that were popular in the 1980s, taking a drastic departure from understated modern design - for example, bold combinations of oranges and blues, such as Dulux Bright Delight, After Burn or Regalia.
Homeowners can integrate this dynamic look in their home using an array of simple techniques, says stylist Bree Leech. “Create a bold feature by using a stencil in a large single graphic shape or multiple shapes. Draw them onto the wall, mask it off then paint in colours that tie back to other elements in the room,” Bree explains. Alternatively, choose a wall with an interesting architectural feature, such as a window ledge, to highlight in a bright colour. To complete the look, choose carpet in a bright hue or opt for a dark charcoal to set off your coloured wall. Dulux colour and trends expert Andrea Lucena-Orr says ‘Pop Art’ and the ‘Memphis design movement’ from the 1980s influenced the Autumn palette, with warm ambers, vibrant blues, sea greens and graphic black and white patterns. “It is time to have fun with colour and make some bold choices,” Ms Lucena-Orr says. “Autumn style will take its cues from design movements where form did not necessarily follow function. It allows us to reconnect with a time when there were fewer restrictions on our creativity.” A fresh coat of paint is a simple and inexpensive way to add colour and personality to your home, creating a place where you feel comfortable, inspired and happy. “Adding new colour is a perfect way to start the season,” she says.“Fresh colour lifts the mood of any room.” For more colour or painting advice view the Dulux ‘how to projects’ online www.dulux.com.au

Victoria conquers the Sunshine Coast Former Whitsunday property specialist and self confessed party girl Victoria Dent is living the dream on the Sunshine Coast. Almost 15 years after she sold resorts and mansions in Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island Victoria is still making her mark on the real estate industry.

Victoria Dent
ictoria says she now has the best of both worlds. “I have created a very pleasant niche for myself on the Sunshine Coast,” she says. “I live in the stunning beachside township of Peregian Beach, the lifestyle is similar to the Whitsundays, it’s laid back with a hint of sophistication. “I now work with Living Gems, an international award winning over 50s’ residential resort company. Living Gems is based on the Gold Coast and operates several resorts throughout south east Queensland. “I have been with Living Gems for a little more than two years. Until recently I was sales manager at Sunstone Gardens at Maleny near the Glasshouse Mountains region. I am now sales manager at the recently launched Crystal by Living Gems Resort at Pacific Paradise near Maroochydore,” she says. Before joining Living Gems Victoria sold golf course villas at the Hyatt Regency in Coolum. She says eight years with Hyatt was a great introduction to the Sunshine Coast.“I got to know most of the local business fraternity and of course the keen golfers. “Golf is part of the way of life on the Sunshine Coast; there are plenty of excellent courses. I enjoy a round or two on weekends, it’s a great way to relax. My favourite course is Twin Waters, it’s just across the road
from Crystal by Living Gems so it’s easy to fit in nine holes after work on summer evenings,” she says. Victoria says the local environment adds to the lifestyle. “I love walking my Spoodles Archie and Cooper along the beach. The beaches here are among the cleanest and least populated in Queensland, I can stroll for miles without seeing a soul. Sometimes we visit the surfing beaches and watch the early morning surfers and swimmers. Other times we take an evening stroll and watch the trawlers come in. “The Sunshine Coast is a foodies' destination. Apart from fresh local fish, there is an endless supply of quality farm produce and dozens of boutique wineries producing award winning products. There are plenty of lovely restaurants, Seasons in Noosa is one of our regular haunts, but I still enjoy entertaining at home. I am still a bit of a party girl at heart. “When we take time out from the Sunshine Coast it is usually to visit friends overseas. I enjoy travelling, especially shopping in New York but I like coming home even more. “It’s easy to see why the Sunshine Coast is a popular tourist destination and why it attracts so many younger retirees from all over Australia and around the world. The climate is perfect, the beaches are beautiful and the region has everything from lush green national parks to breathtaking mountains. “We can shop in charming seaside villages, head to stylish Noosa or watch the surfers at Alexandra Headlands. Lots of people make the daily commute to Brisbane to work – it takes about an hour – but I enjoy working locally. “Crystal by Living Gems is the perfect environment; the boutique resort has five star sports and entertainment facilities. It isn’t built yet and I have already sold 10 homes off the plan. There will be around 125 homes when the resort is complete. “I have already bumped into a few people from the Whitsundays who are looking for affordable homes with all the luxuries. Crystal by Living Gems will become a community of active over 50s who know how to enjoy life,” Victoria says.

Generally found in her studio with yarn running through her hands having risen with the sun, Karen Grady is living a life incomparable to her former existence of taxis, planes and meetings with politicians and CEOs, as Coco Seymour-Griffin reveals.
A
“With two spinning wheels, four looms and a variety of other tools, I am part of a 'slow fashion' movement. To see the alpacas in their paddocks, to know the characteristics of each fleece, to consider the blends, and the look and the style of each garment, and then to handcraft the item, is a wonderful experience. I concentrate on bringing out the best in alpaca and silk using colour and texture, in order to create beautiful, sustainable, bespoke garments – a local product from start to finish.” It’s a world away from the corporate persona that existed before Karen knew she had such creative talents. As a young woman, she obtained a First Class Honours degree in Environmental Science from Murdoch University, and undertook an extensive postgraduate research project in International Environmental Policy and Law, which led to a high flying career with roles with the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and the Business Council of Australia (BCA). “I was at the forefront of corporate sustainability for the ‘big end of town’, working directly with CEOs from Australia’s largest companies. I travelled extensively on international business to environmental forums, such as International Climate Change, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. One of the most inspirational projects I led was ‘Aspire Australia 2025’ – a set of three scenarios for Australia’s future involving 80 leading Australians. My life was very different!” And the differences didn’t stop there. Having proved herself in the corporate world, Karen was ready for the next challenge, and on resigning as deputy of the BCA she deftly shimmied into the entrepreneurial sphere, establishing ‘Window on the Otways’ in Victoria – a guesthouse listed by ninemsn as one of the top 10 modern bed and breakfasts in Australia (also voted by the Victorian public as one of the top 10 places to stay across all accommodation types in Victoria). Perhaps it made sense that the creative domain was therefore her next conquest? It was really the only unmarked territory left. “Finding out who I am and what I am, has been incredible. I think I have always been artistic, but have just been distracted by ‘life’ until now. My partner and I passionately believe that if everyone tries the best they can with the resources they have, with care and consideration for the environment and the community, we all can achieve truly sustainable outcomes. This is our endeavour.”

world away from her background in environmental science and international policy and law, Karen Grady strokes her alpacas with an affection that extends beyond that of a farmer. For the small herd of alpacas that live in Karen’s paddock at Kin Kin is more than just livestock. These creatures are the source of her craft. Her current raison d'être. Her artistic endeavour. How? Now there is the story. Born in 1963, Karen was always a bright soul. Simple, complex, intelligent and intense, with a goal to live a quiet and reasonably sustainable life, Karen possessed an eclectic mind which bubbled with passion, along with a desire to succeed. Having left the family land in Kin Kin when she was a young women in order to spread her wings, Karen always knew that one day she would return, and after 30 years away, that moment came. “Returning ‘home’ was always the plan. So in 2010, my husband and myself arrived back at Kin Kin and built our home on the land. Keen to live sustainably, we ensured our power was supplied by solar, and our water was sourced from our tanks. “We also looked at many options to assist with managing the land, such as sheep, goats, a couple of cattle, horses etc., and in doing so, came across an advertisement in the local paper about National Alpaca Week. One visit to an alpaca farm and we were hooked! Beautiful and gentle animals, the alpacas were right for the land, and what’s more, yielded a luxurious fleece. They fitted in perfectly with our philosophy of sustainability. As a result, we came back with two ‘grass-cutters’ (Honey and Conrad), and a beautiful vintage Ettrick original spinning wheel. Always up for a challenge, there was no question that I would learn to spin.” Turning to the Noosa Arts and Crafts Association’s spinning, knitting and weaving group, Karen soon found herself a crew of like-minded people with a wealth of knowledge to share regarding her newfound interest in spinning. “They taught me to spin,” Karen smiles,“and fuelled my excitement for my new craft.” On mastering spinning, it was time to learn to weave, and for this, Karen turned to the internet, with the weaving community in America bolstering her enthusiasm further and arming her with additional skills. Two and a half years after her initial spinning lesson with the Noosa Arts and Crafts Association, Karen is renowned on the scene, spinning and weaving her luxury hand-raised alpaca fleeces into the most exquisite items, including scarves, shawls and cowls. She is even currently exhibiting at the Old Pomona Railway Gallery, and is due to exhibit with the Noosa Arts and Craft Association later this month.

Australia's first bird Art Prize launches... Snail Mail By: Michelle Mackintosh Published by: Hardie Grant Books RRP $29.95 In a world of 140-character limits, over-sharing and text-speak, are we losing the ability to
really communicate with our loved ones? There was a time when our communications were imbued with emotions and personal touches. With so many ways to communicate now - instantaneously the gift of letter writing is becoming a lost art. Snail Mail is here to bring back handwritten communication in one beautifully illustrated and perfectly proper little package. Snail Mail celebrates that time when we wrote letters to express our thanks, honour our victories, convey our condolences, forward our congratulations - and of course, proclaim our love and admiration. It takes us back to a time when letters required a little thought, effort and time, to create the perfect turn of phrase, that prompt the recipient to place it in a beautiful box as a treasured keepsake. Inspired by Japanese stationery and letterwriting culture, Michelle Mackintosh reveals the charm of the handwritten letter, personalised parcels and handcrafted stationery, as well as showing us how to add a little of this flair to our digital communications.
The Wisdom of Prince Philip By: Antony A. Butt with illustrations by Oslo Davis Published by: Hardie Grant Books RRP $12.95 Prince Philip – or to give him his proper due, His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, KG (Knight of the Garter), KT (Knight of the Thistle), OM (Order of Merit), GBE (Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire), AK (Knight of the Order of Australia), QSO (Companion of The Queen's Service Order), PC (Privy Counsellor) – is a gentleman and a senior Royal of such standing, it’s only fitting that a book celebrate the great wisdom he has accrued in his 93 magnificent years on earth. A tireless public servant to the Commonwealth, who can forget such pearlers as “If it has four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it” as said to a World Wildlife Fund meeting in 1986? Or, observing to a wheelchair-bound Susan Edwards alongside her guide dog in 2002,“Do you know they have eating dogs for the anorexic now?”. Of course, Australians fondly remember his deep and abiding interest in the country. We will always remember his asking “Do you still throw spears at each other?” to Indigenous leader William Brin in 2002? Or when offered a koala to stroke “Oh no, I might catch some ghastly disease”? But perhaps Prince Philip best summed up his illustratrious career when commenting to Jeremy Paxman, “Any bloody fool can lay a wreath at the thingamy”. What fun!!

Baby’s life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady both onstage and off - with breathtaking consequences. Two extraordinary young talents will make the leap from chorus to leading roles, as the two iconic characters in this much loved musical production. The role of charismatic dance teacher Johnny Castle will be played by Kurt Phelan, while the role of innocent young “Baby”
Houseman will be played by Kirby Burgess. Young classical music singer, Mark Vincent in his musical theatre debut as Billy Kostecki, Johnny’s cousin. Baby’s father Jake will be played by Adam Murphy, and her older sister Lisa will be Teagan Wouters. “We have assembled an exceptional cast for this 10th Anniversary production of Dirty Dancing,” said John Frost. “The local and overseas creative teams were very impressed with the talent during the audition process, and our Australian cast is second to none. I’m thrilled to give Kirby and Kurt their first lead roles in a musical – they are certainly musical theatre stars of the future. “Dirty Dancing is a wonderful Australian success story. The stage musical gave audiences the chance to hear the songs from the hit film performed live and to experience the breathtaking dance routines. People flocked to it, breaking records all around the world. Ballet Revolución is recharged, rebooted and ready for its Australian fans once again.
Direct from Cuba, Ballet Revolución – the show that has taken Europe by storm, returns to Australia for a national tour in June and July with a brand new production. The Australian tour begins in Canberra on 22 June followed by shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
A
udiences all over the world simply cannot get enough of the Cuban dancers’ exuberant energy and contagious joy of life with which they turn any idea into an explosive and intense performance. With breathtaking twists, daring jumps and sensual moves from ballet to street dance, Ballet Revolución has already thrilled audiences in sold-out shows from Singapore to Berlin, Vienna and London. “An irresistible Cuban cocktail of ferocious sensuality,” raved The Australian after their previous show’s world premiere in Sydney. Some of Cuba’s most talented artists dance to Latin American music with R&B and hip hop to produce a mix of modern dance styles and elegant ballet with Afro-Cuban dance traditions.“It is dazzlingly fastpaced, humorous and sizzlingly hot- blooded,” gushed the Daily Express after the sold-out performances in London, while the Tagesspiegel wrote after the German premiere in Berlin: “Once the Cuban dancers get going with their athletic bodies and exuberant temperament, it gets really hot.”
The dancers are backed by the eight-strong Ballet Revolución Live-Band, praised by The West Australian as “A sensational live band!” International number 1 hits from Sia, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, Usher, Lorde, Jessie J, Rihanna, J LO and others ignite the fire of the 19 highly trained dancers, allowing them to let their tremendous versatility, musicality and passion run free while infecting the audience with this mood in no time. The dancers were trained at one of the world’s most prestigious dance institutions in their home country, the Escuela Nacional de Arte, with its renowned faculty of modern dance, and at the famous Escuela Nacional de Ballet for classical dance. Dance training is strongly promoted in Cuba, as dance means more than art: on the Caribbean island, it means “life”. Leading Australian choreographer Aaron Cash, along with Cuban choreographer Roclan Gonzalez Chavez, blend breathtaking contemporary moves with salsa and Cuban dance to produce a unique fusion, resulting in an explosion of unbridled passion and raw energy, with a distinctly Cuban flavour. Boundless passion, attractive sensuality, stunning athleticism and exuberant joy of life, Ballet Revolución combines it all in a fireball of emotions that no one can escape. Strictly Limited Season. New Year’s Resolutions Busted Already? Guy Leech, Australia’s Number One Fitness Guy, reveals his top tips for keeping your New Year’s resolutions all year ‘round
W
ith the year now well underway, many we l l - i n te n t i o n e d New Year’s resolutions have already been forgotten, only to be replaced by the same old routines and not-so-nice habits. Helping you get more mileage out of your post-Christmas promises, 'Australia’s Number One Fitness Guy' and former World Ironman Champion, Guy Leech, offers some fool proof tips to keep the resolutions alive and well all year ‘round. “Leechy” is gearing up to break his fourth Guinness World Record for the largest ever Core Fitness Class, which will be held at the Arnold Classic EXPO, in Melbourne in March. At 51 years of age, Guy shows no signs of slowing down and attributes his success to being able to set goals and work at seeing them through 365 days a year. To help you keep up your own good work, here, Leechy reveals his top tips to make those resolutions go the distance: 1. Why? Why? Why? Simply making a resolution isn’t enough, there needs to be an important reason behind WHY you’re setting that particular goal.“If you think about what you stand to gain by achieving a goal, and how you will feel when you get there, it will make it much easier to follow through” explains Leech. To keep your goals front of mind, set up an inspiration board somewhere in your home with quotes, pictures and

anything that inspires you and reminds you of your goals. 2. Be S.M.A.R.T Set yourself up for success by making SMART resolutions, by ensuring your goal is: Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-based.“We’ve heard it all before but too often I see people making the mistake of setting resolutions they can’t measure or track. If you can’t measure it, how can you hope to achieve it?” asks Leech. It’s a really good idea to start a goals diary where you can document the details of your SMART goals and track your progress. 3. Outta’ Sight Outta’ Mind Taking the time to write out your resolutions and put them where you can always see them, keeps your ambitions at the forefront of your mind.“If you rarely see your goals, you’re likely to forget about them,” says Leech. “Seeing your goals written out in black and white can work as a powerful motivator, and can really make the difference as to whether you end up achieving them,” he adds. Write your goals up and place them in a spot that you frequently see, like on the fridge, the bathroom mirror, or taped to your computer screen at work. 4. Break it up Rather than setting long term goals that seem out of reach, break your bigger resolutions into smaller goals that can be achieved as you go. “If a resolution is too big, it can be very intimidating and entirely off-putting,” says Leech. “Provide yourself with achievable milestones along the way to reaching your goal, acknowledge when you achieve each one and reward yourself as you go, rather than just at the end,” recommends Leech. “For example, if your goal is to run a half marathon, you might set a goal to run 5km, 10km and then
15km by a certain date, gradually working your way to the full distance and highfiving yourself as your running fitness improves.” 5. Talk about it Don’t be afraid to tell your friends, family and co-workers about your resolutions. “If the people around you can support your goals, they will be able to keep you on track when you might otherwise be tempted to waiver,” says Leech. Likewise, it’s great to partner up with someone so you have you have a buddy to keep you on track and to keep you accountable. “Partner up with someone who has the same or a similar resolution. Going on the journey with someone is always more fun and more motivating than going it alone,” explains Leech. 6. Keep tabs on yourself It’s always a good idea keep track of your successes and struggles along the way. Making notes of your weekly efforts or giving yourself a rating out 10 can be a really simple way to keep your motivation up.“Reflecting on successes and struggles throughout your journey is a really powerful tool as it allows you to be mindful of what does and doesn’t work. I find keeping a journal or note book on any fitness journey incredibly important,” says Leech. 7. Control the inner voice “Never underestimate the power of what you tell yourself,” insists Leech. “It is important keep control of the voice in your head and feed yourself positive messages. It is surprising how damaging your negative thoughts can be, while positive thinking pays off in spades.” For more information on Guy and his latest endeavours visit: www.guyleech.com
