Santa's Classy Helpers sparkle at Red on Thomas…

Local tourist operators and business people get together each month to mingle and share 'industry' talk. The addition of a good drink and tempting nibbles only adds to the atmosphere and conviviality of the evenings. Recently we ventured upstairs to the new Noosa Underground Surf for a night that started with a delicious passionfruit cocktail - (thanks Paz from Kitchen Shed Catering).

Lorraine Kenway owner of Noosa Classy Ladies and 'leader' of Santa's Classy Helpers, who do so much good for the less fortunate in our community, has a program of fundraising luncheons, afternoon teas, dinners and Golf Days planned for 2016. Their February luncheon at the popular, Red on Thomas in Noosaville was a huge success, with lots of funds raised and goodies collected. The packed restaurant of ladies were singing the praises of chef Jamie Lethborg who created a menu that delighted everyone..

Clever 2016 Surfing Dogs entertain the crowds…

Mooloolaba Surf Club were well represented by Robyn Jewry, David Jewry, Sally Taylor and Andrew Brown.

All New... Audi A4 launches at The Sheraton… Dealer principal of Audi Centre, Sunshine Coast, Richard Moye invited guests to witness the unveiling of the new Audi A4 recently, on the Lily Pond Terrace at Sheraton Noosa Resort. Guests are given the opportunity to witness the A4's classy design and technology, whilst sipping 'Lemon Drops' from the live cocktail station, and enjoying the goodies on offer at the live cooking stations. Singer Mark Moroney kept the guests entertained in between speeches.

Sunday afternoon at the Noosa Festival of Surfing was all about the dogs! With the 2016 Surfing Dogs Spectacular always a highlight of the festival. What talent…such surefooted technique…and all good-looking canines to boot! Their virtuosity might have even outshone their human assistants.

BUBS opens in Noosaville… Owners Guy and Meagan were delighted to welcome customers into their brand-new boutique style Bubs store recently. This is a new generation of shop for the family owned business. By the look of the happy shoppers laden with bags leaving on the day, Noosa is already impressed by the concept.

Noosa locals and visitors to the region were recently given the honour of being the first people in Australia to see the brand new, ultra-chic, McLaren, that was shipped directly from England into Australia and then trucked to the Mantra French Quarter in Hastings Street, where it presided centre stage with the latest Aston Martin DB11 and Rolls-Royce Wraith.

T

he luxury vehicles were on display in a 'Best of British' one-off event - held over four fabulous days in front of the French Quarter, and included a sensational VIP cocktail party hosted in and around the vehicles on the Thursday night. This event was a huge coup for Noosa, and thanks had to be given the Queensland dealership owner Steve Kelly, Paul Hewitt and James Staniforth, who asked for our assistance in putting this monumental event together. Our thanks also go to all those who assisted in the success of the event, Mantra French Quarter body corporate and management; Tom Offermann Real Estate; and French Quarter boutiques, Toscani, Bowery 475, D'Albo and Poeta on Hastings; as well as Locale Noosa, who all participated in this unique and highly successful event. Be sure to watch for our full coverage of the 'Best of British' event in our Winter issue. This season the town is hopping with Easter and the school holidays in full swing, and Noosa Food & Wine 2016 set to ignite the senses of foodies around the region. Our city's chefs have been hard at work designing new Autumn menus to showcase the region's prolific supply of 'farm fresh' produce…on the plate. And of course, come May we will once again have a rush of dedicated foodies in town for Noosa Food & Wine 2016. Our local chefs will be cooking up a storm alongside an exciting line-up of visiting chefs, who will be taking full advantage of their time in Noosa, to hit the beach and dine on our fabulous seafood and produce. And, be sure to check out our beautiful cookbook feature and recipes that you can make at home this season as well. This issue we introduce you to several different locals and sea-changers. We talk to Sandy Bolton, longtime Noosa Councillor and all-round fun lady, whose lineage of strong women offers a success story for young women everywhere to emulate. We also took a scenic drive to Archer's Field recently for a 'Wings around the World' fund-raising event for young Sunshine Coast pilot Lachlan Smart, who is all set to become the world's youngest solo pilot to fly a single engine plane around the world. You'll find his journey from skateboard to pilot exceptional. We also introduce you to Chris de Aboitiz and his travelling, surfing companions, who help garner interest and publicity in the rescue and rehabilitation of unwanted dogs. Chris's passion for changing people's perception of our canine companions is inspirational. This is a powerhouse of an issue - you may need a drink. Eat, drink, read, dream and enjoy…

Sandy shores... E

volving from a lineage of resilient adventurers who arrived from their native shores to Rockhampton on the Selkirkshire in the 1800s, Sandy Bolton’s family line offers a unique blend of hardworking, no-nonsense farming stock, including a connection to resourceful and creative ‘repurposers’, artists, wanderers, writers and innovative business owners.

“My great grandparents were famous in Rockhampton for their ‘open door’ policy to help those in need, even though they had very little. Great granddad could make anything out of anything, including musical instruments,” reveals Sandy. “My mother was a woman before her time – both in business and sustainability. We never ate what she could sell, instead trapping rabbits and catching squid at full tide. She always said a dollar saved was three dollars income that you did not have to earn. I always remember that.” Proud of her working class roots, Sandy learned quickly as a young girl that life was for the taking. With a strong female role model demonstrating what it was to make things happen, the foundations of Sandy’s mental outlook were formed early, the basis of her later dedication to positive change. “When I grew up, there was no definition of labels or roles. My parents divorced after I was born, and my mother did everything: ran the business, plumbed, dug trenches, built sheds, trained racehorses. It was the norm in our world, and I believe one of the greatest influences in my life. “My childhood was one of great freedom and adventure. If you were not up at dawn you were considered lazy. I was curious, and loved exploring. Did I get into trouble? YES! At 5 years old I would visit all the campers at Evans Head and make myself known! Mum would send my brother forever searching, and I always was under ‘quarantine’. A quick stowaway job on a trawler, however, scared me sufficiently to cure my desire to explore the high seas.” Finishing school at 15 to help her mother, Sandy managed a saddlery in Parramatta initially, starting her first business at 16. Training in hotel management from 17, Sandy was always the first to put her hand up at her hotel placements, unloading the beer truck, 11 pallets at a time by hand, without the blink of an eye. In fact, it was this kind of ethic that gave Sandy the edge and allowed her to separate herself from the crowd. continues next page...

With a non-traditional upbringing, Noosa Councillor Sandy Bolton has always relished a challenge, swapping a suit for an Akubra, and nightlights to starlight on a million acre of wilderness, as Coco Seymour-Griffin discovers. So, it’s little wonder that this Noosa Councillor, who has recently run for Noosa Mayor [decision unknown at time of print], is a passionate and vibrant spirit who can’t help but devote herself to her sense of community and family, and is not scared to roll her sleeves up in order to make the world a better place.

found a building society that did not share this perspective, although the interest rates certainly reflected their caution!”

“I learnt the business from every aspect, and as a result, was given my first hotel to manage at 18. This was unheard of in that era, where you had to earn your stripes every day in a very tough environment.”

By 19, Sandy had bought her first house. “My bank manager told me, “You have three strikes against you. You are female, single and young.” However, thankfully I

10

As Sandy headed into her twenties, it was time for some travel. Embarking on a solo journey into QLD from NSW, Sandy soon found herself crewing on a yacht, and then moving onto the Northern Territory, meeting her future husband who worked for an American company that had purchased an abandoned million-acre property below Arnhem Land. Falling in love with the landscape, the vastness of the area and the indigenous culture, Sandy revelled in the remoteness and magnificence of her new setting, embracing life in her new ‘house’ which consisted of

some simple tin and hardwood poles (as the white ants had eaten everything else). “A bit of fly wire became ‘walls’, a radio telephone became our only contact to the outside world, and an old ‘genset’ became our sole access to power. This was my growing-up period – a time of understanding what serious responsibility meant. It could be six hours before the Flying Doctor could attend an emergency, and we had both station hands and our indigenous community dependent on daily lifesaving decisions. “Home was a business that covered an area larger than Noosa where the infrastructure of roads and fencing needed rebuilding every year, where transport was by helicopter and where I took on the role of station nurse/cook/mechanic/fencer and mother for the first time. “I was very fortunate to have studied during this time. I can remember my first computer arriving on a cattle truck from Dalgetys in Katherine. It was a huge Amstrad, and from the manual, I set about learning DOS. I still have vivid memories of getting up in the early hours of the morning to do weather readings, and then studying (through distance education) until the day officially started.” After seven years of extremes including drought and flood, advocacy for isolated peoples, and moving from the Roper Valley to the Barkly Tableland and then to Julia Creek to set up a bull multiplier unit, Sandy saw the ‘green grass’ of the Noosa Shire on a trip back home to Sydney, and fell in love. “After three years of drought, the dust had parched our souls. With three children, and my husband unwell from Ross River Fever, it was time to settle, so we purchased an old house at Kin Kin on 60 acres. It had pythons living in it, no floorboards in the kitchen and the land was overgrown by native tobacco and lantana. What I noticed most

after living in remote communities however, was that there was a lack of a unified ‘voice’ in Kin Kin. Hence the birth of the Kin Kin Village Voice, and an instantaneous connection with my new ‘forever’ home.” With jobs in management scarce, it took a year before the role of Restaurant and Promotions Manager at the Cooroy RSL became Sandy’s. Difficult as it was with split shifts (including weekends), three small children and a marriage that had ended, she still managed to volunteer in the community, and to find time to explore the shire.

By 19, Sandy had bought her first house.

And so began her love affair with Noosa. As time passed, Sandy’s management roles headed into consultancy as she honed her knowledge in strategic and operational planning, financial administration, business development, governance and resource management, fitting in studies in anthropology, politics and international relations, as well as starting an MBA in Tourism and Hospitality. After 22 years in the shire having worked in the tourism, sporting, social services, human resources and hospitality industries, Sandy became a Councillor in 2014, with her love of people, challenge, advocacy and business utilised to its maximum benefit. “Even though I see my life as blessed, many may not agree. Like others I have gone through hardship and grief. I have lost loved ones. I have lived through tough times, working 80-hour weeks and gaining blisters from our ‘leisure’ time. But my life has been filled with laughter, adventure and love. I am intensely proud of my children, who are innovative, caring and hardworking individuals, and I still live at the recycled haven my children and I built together. I deeply appreciate every day, and the people I encounter.”

NS Continental GT V8 Convertible

The dominant bonnet line, prominent matrix grille and twin large inner headlamps confirm its pedigree but the Continental GT V8 Convertible has its own distinct character. And one that exudes refined luxury. To simply call this car a convertible understates its capability. It is both a sensational open tourer when the weather permits and a supremely comfortable year-round drive, as acoustically and thermally well insulated as a coupé, thanks to its unique, four layer roof.

The 4.0 litre, twin turbocharged V8 Continental GT coupé and GT Convertible achieve exceptional standards for power-to-emissions in the high luxury sports car sector. This remarkable, new Bentley V8 engine delivers maximum power of 500bhp (507PS/373Kw) at 6000 rev/min and an extraordinary peak torque of 660Nm (487 lb.ft) which is available across virtually the entire rev range from 1700 to 5000 rev/min, providing exhilarating performance and effortless power delivery in the Bentley tradition. Combined with a close-ratio 8-speed automatic transmission, this translates into a sub-5 second acceleration time for the 0-60 mph (0-100km/h) sprint and a top speed of over 180mph (290km/h).

The new Continental GT V8 Convertible takes open top comfort to new levels and, with the roof down, lets you enjoy the V8’s exquisite mechanical symphony in full surround sound. See it at BENTLEY Brisbane, Fortitude Valley or www.bentleybrisbane.com.au

NS Winter 2016

Winter 16 collection is RAW meets LUXE garbs. Amano is a play of scale and texture against a tonal monochromatic palette with unexpected highlights. Silver greys and snow whites give the collection its luxury feel, whilst the rich reds & blacks pull it out of the ethereal with a punchy and bold finish. Most of the colours used are undyed, natural to the alpaca fibre which naturally lend a strong base palette. The silhouettes are voluminous and oversized. Clean lines and uncomplicated shapes are highlighted with elongated sleeves,

Amano seeks to LOCALLY produce HANDMADE pieces, focusing on knitwear by local artisans from locally sourced MATERIALS. Amano targets our local Alpaca industry rich with possibilities for its natural potential - in a bid to explore everything alpaca has to offer.

exaggerated torsos with drop shoulders. These key elements allow the pieces to sculpt the body without hiding the form beneath. The knit structure varies from ultra fine gauze to contrasting textures of chunky knits and open mesh, offering a rich body of work pushing the boundaries of scale and form.

The yarns used are the key ingredients in Amano. Utilising the finest local alpaca including suri Alpaca which is the most luxurious of fibres sharing the stand with the likes of cashmere.

The Ferrari of hairdryers has arrived... If you could change one thing about your hair-drying routine, what would it be? How long it takes? How heavy your dryer is? Would you like to create a smoother

Incredibly lightweight, weighing less than a can of soft drink - the Rapido is the lightest highperformance professional dryer in the world. If you're in a hurry, towel dry your hair before you start your hairdryer up - it removes excess moisture and reduces drying time. If you're drying straight from the shower, keep in mind that wet hair can stretch up to 30% which makes it more prone to breaking, so be gentle with your hair while it's wet. Apply product only once hair is 50% dry this will ensure Use a brush with a ceramic base - these brushes spread heat evenly and hold heat better, allowing the hair to dry evenly throughout. Avoid metal brushes as get really hot while you're blowdrying, which may be great for speed, but it's not so great for your hair. Keep your distance - hold the dryer around 6cm away from the hair to avoid overheating your hair, causing damage and frizz. Also use a lower heat if the hair is damaged, this will avoid the hair from heating up too much internally. Always section the hair before drying to help simplify the process. This will also ensure that you don't go over and over the same section of hair repeatedly, which results in over-drying, causing hair to fry and look dehydrated. Always direct hair flow from root to ends, along the hair shaft. This helps to lay the hair cuticle flat along the hair shaft, which reduces tangles and frizz, and encourages shine. It also lengthens the life of your blowdry. The three elements to a successful blow-dry are tension, heat, and cool. For maximum volume and height, wind the brush down to the roots with tension and completely dry the base at the roots before winding out. Finish your blow-dry with a blast of cold air to help set the style, seal your cuticles, and add shine.

Anti-Ageing Use a shine serum or heat protection spray when you blow-dry. Years of drying your hair can take a toll on it, so protect it before you add more heat. Two guaranteed ways to make your hair look younger (and more healthy) is through shine and volume. Avoid volume around the face, and opt for adding it at the crown to give a more youthful look.

o anyone who didn’t know, Lachlan Smart would look like your average teenager. He hangs with his mates, he skates, he surfs. Except that he’s not average. In fact, he’s anything but. With a dream and an ambition way beyond his years, together with an atypical visionary outlook, here is a boy who sees life as a journey of possibility rather than a road of survival. Lachie is a rainbow in a grey sky, a soaring eagle over a deserted plain. Not only is he set to fly solo around the globe this year, becoming the youngest person (at18) in history to circumnavigate it alone in a single engine aircraft, but in doing so, he aims to challenge the youth perspective for those in hardship, demonstrating that dreams are for chasing.

“From two years old, I loved everything about planes,” smiles Lachie.“I had my first flying lesson at 14 and have been flying ever since. Last year, I gained my private pilot’s license, but before that, I created Wings Around the World as a vehicle to combine my passion for aviation with the message of youth achievement. From a young age, I wanted to do something inspirational. It wasn't always my dream to fly around the world, but with my clear passion for aviation together with my desire to do good with it, it made sense to take on a world flight.”

Profile: Lachlan Smart

One teenager, one engine, one trip around the world. Meet Lachie Smart, a boy with a vision like no other, as Coco Seymour-Griffin discovers.

Spending his early years at the Sunshine Coast airport with his mum and a bucket of hot chips watching aircraft take off and land, Lachie was always destined to be in the sky. continues next page... NoosaStyleLivviinngg NoosaStyleLi

continued from previous page “Flying for me is the ultimate sense of freedom. Being up in the sky is so different from being on the ground. It gives you a whole new perspective on life, not only from a visual viewpoint, but from a mental one too. It clears the mind like nothing else.” Inspired by the likes of Richard Branson, Jessica Watson and Ryan Campbell, Lachie cites such game changers as huge motivators for his mission. “We live in an age of endless potential. We need to reach out and grasp the opportunities that are around us and become achievers. If I, a normal teenager from the Sunshine Coast, can fly around the world solo there is no reason why anyone can't achieve their dreams. No dream is too high. No goal is too great. As long as you have an optimistic attitude, anything is possible.” With the journey of creating Wings Around The World a rollercoaster ride to date, Lachie has certainly had to work harder than ever before to front up to his goal. Assembling a nine-person world-class team to ensure that every last detail of the record attempt is managed for risk, with a focus on safety, whilst providing partners of the project with the opportunity to get behind such an achievement of magnitude, Lachie hasn’t stopped. “The ups and downs have been tremendous. When I first started two years ago, I knew that I would not be able to do this alone. So, the obvious first step was to build a professional team around me to assist with the trip. Once I had a solid team established, I knew I would then be able to start to promote and fundraise for the journey, but not before I had a solid plan in place to know exactly what I would be doing and how. “The last year has been predominantly fundraising and flight planning. It is expected the Wings Around The World project will cost between $350,000 and $400,000. To raise this level of funding, the team has been working on several marketing packages and also a number of funding models for the ownership/rental of a suitable aircraft for the journey. It’s a huge project! In addition, route requirements, fuel pick ups, accommodation and permits are just some of the logistical requirements that I am in the process of planning, not

to mention hangarage and maintenance for the aircraft. “Overall, it's not an easy feat. I guess that's why they call it a world record! But when it sometimes feels like it might never happen, I just remember what I am doing it for and keep pushing on.” Scheduled to take Lachie 70 days and cover 45,000kms, it’s hardly surprising that such attention to detail has been required. And with international press already following Lachlan as he prepares for his assignment, the pressure is certainly on. But incredibly it doesn’t seem to phase his young shoulders, spurring him on instead. “When I think about success, to me, it’s about achieving goals through any circumstances, with setbacks the foundation to success. Every failure is a success if you learn from it.” Now a speaker, having given talks to Skal International’s National Tourism Congress and ANZ Bank, as well as being the youth ambassador for the Australian Spitfire Association and studying for his commercial pilot’s licence in addition, Lachlan is clearly a bird in full flight, nourishing, nurturing and honing the very reason for his existence. “My ultimate goal in life is to be able to inspire a generation of change. Not just through this one act, but by seeing the shy become leaders, and dreamers become achievers. Too often young people are constrained to the box that society says they are in. I want to see these boxes destroyed and the limitless potential of young people to really be observed. The Wings Around The World describes an ideology which is important: achieving high goals through adversity can be synonymous with embracing a dream of flying. Adversities are faced over time, however they do not have to limit the level at which success is achieved. I believe that despite our limitations, we can be a generation of movers and shakers that can make a real difference in the world.” To read more about Lachie’s mission and to support him on his journey, visit www.wingsaroundtheworld.com.au.

Olga Aleksandrovna's passion for fashion started when she was just 12-years-old.

O

lga explains that her inspiration came from her mother and grandmother, who were always very good at making clothes and sewing. As a child, she remembers their sewing machine was always there in our lounge room, with her mother busily designing and sewing in the evening, and she loved to be there - helping her. Her mother would let her play with the pieces of fabric and patterns to her heart's content. "As a bridal designer my journey started with a single, silk flower that my friend showed me how to make. I really enjoyed working with the fabrics, and from that time on, I started to make fascinators and headpieces and sell them to my friends. And then they and their friends started asking me to make something for there special day." she said I was amazed that people would actually like what I was doing, as much as I did. I named my label Aleks Bridal Collection, as my middle name Aleksandrovna) is the same as my sisters, and my father Aleksander, and my son's middle name as well. Not long after that, the orders started to arrive. Olga's home and business are based in Buderim, on the Sunshine Coast. "It’s a fantastic place to work from home; I take bookings by appointment, and then offer them a relaxed 'homey' atmosphere, with nice cup of tea to help ease the tension for brides planning their special day." she continued "My success has taken me by surprise - considering I haven’t done a lot of sewing since I left school, and although I had always had an interest in making

clothes, it never crossed my mind to become a designer." "I am so grateful and very fortunate to meet so many wonderful people along the way, and have received fantastic support from my family, who continue to support me in every way!" Olga explains Olga says she has bad days, and has had fantastic days - sometimes its not all as wonderful and glamorous as you might think, but she loves the challenges and says that she is learning from every experience, good or bad, every day. And it is definitely all working out in the best way! A few years ago, one of the Olga's good friends invited her to attend the Sunshine Coast Bridal Expo and insisted that she take some of her designs along as well. "I made my patterns, laid out the fabric and made the dress! As I didn’t expect anything to eventuate, and had no idea that I would receive such a great response, it was a total surprise and the defining moment that has changed my life." "Since that time I have fallen in love with bridal industry, I have become obsessed with the textures of the fabric, silks and beautiful laces, beading, sparkly Swarovski crystals and pearls." said Olga. And now she says, its an extremely exiting time for her, as she is about to launch her first - Smart Casual Collection with a new label. After last year's success at the Fashion Festival, Olga has been inspired to make her first collection for the Autumn /Winter season featuring beautiful cream and charcoal colours; as well as collection featuring beautiful earthy, colourful silky prints for the coming Spring /Summer season.

With this idea in mind, James Pecis created a perfectly dishevelled up-do that features loose strands of hair falling gently in the model's faces to invoke a sense of mystery and playfulness.

To achieve the Costume National hair look, follow James Pecis' step-by-step instructions below: Apply a small amount of Moroccanoil Treatment to prep hair and build a workable foundation for styling. Create a deep part from ear to ear to divide the hair, separating the front section from the back. Apply Moroccanoil Root Boost evenly and abundantly from mid-length to the tips to achieve consistency and the ideal texture creating a slightly wet effect. Next, soften the top part of the hair by applying a small amount of Moroccanoil Smoothing Lotion. Tie the front part into a ponytail at the center of the head, twisting and turning the hair before securing it. Leave a few loose locks to fall over the forehead. Repeat the twisting and turning with the back portion of the hair, forming a second ponytail that is placed high up. Then, twist, set and secure downwards, leaving a few loose locks at the base of the neck. As a final touch, work the locks, keeping them very flat in

MASUNAGA In 1905, Gozaemon Masunaga, a politician, started Masunaga Optical within the eyewear industry as a way to bring more jobs to the people in Fukui, Japan, which was then a farming community that needed jobs during the cold winter. Masunaga allowed his best craftsmen to start factories of their own, eventually populating Fukui with a group of high-quality workshops, all having roots with Masunaga. They believed that with the best quality, then profit would eventually follow. In 1933, they custom made handmade frames for the Emperor of Japan in solid gold. In 1970, one of our frames was placed in the time capsule at the world's fair at the Osaka Expo. The birth of the MASUNAGA collection pays tribute to the classic and timeless design. Meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the countless steps of the manufacturing process. Masunaga does not rush the process. No shortcuts are taken, no compromises are made in the creation of each MASUNAGA frame. Featuring beautifully hand polished Japanese acetate, durable seven barrel hinges, distinctive silver rivets, MASUNAGA collection confirms what Masunaga Optical has achieved over the past century. Masunaga is available in northern Sunshine Coast exclusively at Options Eyecare, Peregian Beach

With restaurants, bars, cafĂŠs and take-aways dotted around the walking streets, visitors can enjoy a seated coffee, lunch or dinner, and beachgoers can pick up goodies for a picnic at the beach or in the shoreline parks. here, thanks to some dedicated local musicians who set up Peregian Originals,” says Ange Takats, a Peregian Beach-based author, journalist and musician. “There is no regular community music festival of its kind anywhere else in Australia and this makes me proud as punch.” Just over the sand hills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of wallum heath which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in spring. On the western side of Peregian Beach is Lake Weyba National Park, and Lake Weyba, which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. Nearby, too, is the southern extension of the Noosa National Park with a rich mix of coastal heath and scrub and stately rainforest which provides sanctuary and support for a wealth of native flora and fauna. Peregian Village has all the charm of a coastal village. Stores are stocked with classy homewares, stationary, office essentials, quirky and must-buy gifts and of course must-have accessories, beautiful boutiques for him, her and baby too, trendy surf fashion, beauty therapists who fully understand the meaning of serene relaxation and many cafes, all renowned for fresh, exciting fare. ith the lightest weight in its class and the highest power to weight ratio, it delivers super car punch and thrills that would shame many more expensive rivals.

Motoring

Even if you take for granted 0-124mph in a scarcely believable 9.5 seconds, nothing prepares you for the thrill of the 570S Coupé’s race-bred dynamics. With a 3.8-litre twin turbo V8, delivering 570PS, performance is nothing short of breath taking. One of the many McLaren technologies the Sports Series shares with its Formula 1™ and supercar cousins is carbon fibre construction. The MonoCell II is a strong chassis that weighs just 75kg and provides immense rigidity and stiffness that translates into outstanding dynamics. This lightweight construction coupled with the potent mid-mounted V8 provide the best power-to-weight ratio of any sports car in its class. The 570S provides an addictive driving experience and the ultimate in driver engagement. Adaptive dampers and anti-roll bars are paired with a double wishbone suspension that makes the 570S incredibly nimble and responsive to every driver input. The system can be set to Normal, Sport or Track on the Active Dynamics Panel, allowing the optimum setting for any road or track condition.

Dramatic and thrilling, the stunning exterior design works in complete harmony with the quest for aerodynamic perfection. The shrink-wrapped aluminium body panels and teardrop-shaped cockpit of the 570S Coupé reduce drag resistance. A range of striking exterior colours, four alloy wheel designs and an array of personalisation options result is a sports car that looks as thrilling as it is to drive. Inspired by the McLaren P1™ supercar, slimline light blade LED tail lights accentuate an expanse of open mesh for enhanced engine cooling and a technical, futuristic appearance. The mid-mounted engine is visible beneath the lightweight mesh, while an aggressive ‘floating’ diffuser enhances downforce for supremely confident handling. A signature McLaren feature, the dihedral doors swing open to make entering and leaving as effortless as possible. Delicately contoured in lightweight aluminium, the unique-in-class doors extend all the way to the front wheel arches, and help to channel cool air to elegant wing-like air intakes integrated into the rear fenders. The low stance and sleek, contoured nose declares power and dynamism. It’s a look that’s as functional as it is thrilling. I

was sitting quietly enjoying my perfect, flat white coffee at Costa Noosa in Sunshine Beach the other day, and listening to the friendly staff welcoming customers by name. Time and time again, someone would walk in to place an order, and the staff would already know what they wanted. I thought how wonderful it was in this day and age, when so many things are transient, that customers were so loyal - that their names and orders seemed to be second nature to the staff. and alternatively, that the staff were so happy in their positions that they took the time to remember their customers. Then suddenly an old TV theme song for Cheers (written by Gary Portnay) started to play in my mind. I found myself walking back to my car humming - 'Where everyone knows your name'! What a wonderful feeling. Costa Noosa Espresso- Sunshine Beach Left: Paul Leete Head Chef Sails Restaurant

Blue cheese with sparkling shiraz or lambrusco There is such variety in the category of blue cheese that a book could be written on it alone. Blue cheese acquired its name due to the veins of edible blue mould that fracture the cheese.

B

lue cheese is available in many styles, textures and intensities from all around the world. Familiarising yourself with the most wellknown options is a good place to start. Roquefort, France No rind, white, tangy, crumbly and slightly moist, with distinctive veins of greeny blue mould. Gorgonzola, Italy Young gorgonzola is creamy, flavoursome, salty, pungent and moist. As it ages it can become crumbly and drier. Danablu/Danish Blue, Denmark Edible rind, semi-soft and creamy, salty, tangy, and sharply flavoured, although often milder than other blues.

Blue Stilton, England Slightly acidic and semi-firm when young, this cheese actually mellows and becomes softer with age. It has a crusty rind and cylindrical shape.

Australia also produces a variety of blue cheese, with Tasmania offering the broadest and most well-known range. Serving Suggestion Sherry or port with blue cheese would be a pretty typical pairing suggestion, or even a sweet moscato to counterbalance the tang of the blue veins, but an interesting option is pairing with a sparkling shiraz or lambrusco. Both lambrusco and shiraz have an underlying sweetness that offers a nice counterbalance: the earthiness of the wine is accentuated, making it seem richer; plus the fruitiness of the wine enhances the tanginess of the cheese. Try lambrusco with younger, blue cheese and sparkling shiraz with an aged blue. A simple addition of sliced pear complements this enhancing match.

clean green vegan cuisine

by Scott Mathias, author of International bestseller ‘Lets Eat Raw’ recipe book: • Vegan - Gluten Free • Dairy Free • No processed food • No white sugar

foods Crafted living in a Bento Bar ily... Made fresh da rts Beautiful desse e Cov Organic Little Coffee

5 Healthy Tips for your Noosa stay (and beyond) Scott Mathias CHHC. AADP – Author & GoVegan Deli Founder Without doubt Noosa is one of the top ‘R & R’ destinations in the world.

I

n recent years there has been a proliferation of health and fitness activities from cycling (flat and mountain), paddling (surf and stand-up-SUP ), yoga (hot, cold and SUP), energetic adventure tours, running, jogging, walking and lying on a beach (Main, Little Cove, Sunshine) soaking up the sun’s rays and drinking in the pristine surroundings. Now there is healthy food; not food containing hydrogenated deep fried oils, an over abundance of animal proteins and a distinct lack of living green vegetables. The GoVegan Deli, in Noosaville’s, Thomas Street is at the top end of the veryhealthy food spectrum. There is NO meat, wheat, dairy, processed foods, grains or white sugar used in the food here. This unique healthy food experience is without compromise. Since opening in late 2015, the GoVegan Deli is attracting a growing number of health aware people – young and old and not just vegans; people who choose to not eat any animal products. Their choice is either because of a desire to eat only cruelty free food or their bodies have literally become clogged-up with an array of animal protein, needing help because their organs are under stress.

My healthy living tips and not just whilst holidaying in Noosa are these:

Tip 1: Start your day with fruit; did you know the enzymes in fruit activate the ‘waste release mechanism’ each morning? I start my day with a bowl of fruit or a fruit smoothie bowl with a handful of nuts, raisins or dried coconut. This means by midday I have completely removed any of yesterdays waste – my body loves the feeling of freedom!! Tip 2: Eat the greater volume of food at lunchtime. This means your gut has a chance to fully breakdown the food consumed and the nutrient absorption process can begin during daylight hours. This is the time to bring in good plant proteins like Kale (8x more protein than animal meat) and other protein rich green foods – Spinach, Asian greens, Hemp protein powder and seeds and nuts – sunflower, cashew, almond. Tip 3: Snack in the evening before 8:00pm. This means the body is not over fed for the all-important 8 hours of fasting until 4:00am the next morning. This is the time when the adrenals and immune system reboots, the lymphatics will drain without stress, the central nervous system is calmed and regenerates and waste is moved in the lower intestine ready for evacuation the next morning. Many people have the bulk of their food in the evening which places immense stress on the not just the digestive system but the rest of the body. This speeds up the aging process as a direct result of metabolic stress. Tip 4: Seek balance with nature, in particularly your food, which supports your life 100%. Shop for your living vegetables and fruit as locally as you can. Have you tried the Noosa Farmers Market held every Sunday in the AFL car park in Weyba Rd? Tip 5: I practice ‘thanks and gratitude’ for the daily provisions. In fact I owe my life to my Raw Vegan lifestyle – all my ailments disappeared completely more than eight years ago when I began eating live vegetables and fruit. I have found with my coaching work the human body has a very clear memory of knowing how to operate perfectly, if you give it a chance. Less animal based foods will reduce the extent of inflammation in the body providing you with a happy, healthy, productive and above all, pain free lifestyle. Who could disagree with that?

Brown sugar meringues with passionfruit curd

Cooked: Food for Friends By: Mark Best Published by: Hardie Grant Books RRP $24.99 Cooked: Food for Friends is all about sharing; 100 dishes, all delicious, and many of which you can whip up fast. Across eight chapters, the book presents ideas for: backyard grill; impromptu dinners; brunch; picnics; drinks parties; high tea; and the ultimate Sunday roast spread. Packed full of recipes from some of Australia's favourite chefs and cooks, including Alain Ducasse, Greg and Lucy Malouf, Luke Nguyen, Skye Gyngell, Antonio Carluccio, Paul Wilson, Mark Best, Matt Wilkinson and Margaret Fulton. Menus include weekend brunches, backyard grills, party canapés, Sunday roasts, picnics and impromptu dinner parties. What more could you want in a cookbook?

These meringues are a modern take on an Australian classic – the pavlova with cream and passionfruit. Made as miniatures, they are ideal for afternoon tea or to finish a cocktail party. MAKES 50 Ingredients: 3 eggs, separated 80 g caster sugar 80 g brown sugar 1 tablespoon cornflour 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste lightly whipped cream to serve

PASSIONFRUIT CURD Ingredients: 60 g passionfruit pulp 40 g butter 55 g caster sugar 3 egg yolks (left over from the meringue mixture) Method: Preheat the oven to 160°C and line two baking trays with baking paper. Using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Add the caster sugar then the brown sugar, gradually, and continue to beat

until the mixture is glossy and the sugar has dissolved. Add the cornflour and vanilla and mix until just combined. Spoon or pipe the meringue onto the prepared trays. With the back of a wet teaspoon, carefully make an indent in each meringue that will hold the cream and curd. Bake for 50 minutes or until dry. Place the trays on wire racks and leave to cool. Carefully peel the meringues off the baking paper. While the meringues are baking, make the passionfruit curd. Strain the passionfruit pulp but return a few seeds to it and put it with the remaining ingredients in a heatproof bowl over simmering water. Whisk for 10 minutes or until thickened. Set aside to cool completely, stirring occasionally to prevent a skin from forming. To serve, top the meringues with a spoon of the lightly whipped cream and a dollop of the passionfruit curd. NOTE To test to see if the sugar has dissolved in the meringue, rub a small amount of mixture between your fingers; if gritty, keep beating until it feels smooth

TUNA, AVOCADO, WAKAME, PICKLED CUCUMBER Ingredients: ¼ avocado ¼ teaspoon milk ½ teaspoon dried wakame 250 g (9 oz) sashimi-grade tuna, trimmed and cut into 1.5 cm (½ in) cubes ¼ teaspoon sea salt flakes 2 small red radishes, thinly sliced SOY DRESSING 2 tablespoons light soy sauce ½ teaspoon rice wine vinegar ¼ teaspoon caster sugar zest of ¼ lemon 60 ml (2 fl oz/. cup) grapeseed oil PICKLED CUCUMBER 60 ml (2 fl oz/¼ cup) rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons salt 1 baby cucumber, sliced into 5 mm (¼ in) rounds Method: To make the pickled cucumber, in a small saucepan put the vinegar, 125 ml (4. fl oz/. cup) water, the sugar and salt and cook until the sugar has dissolved, taking care not to let it boil. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Slice the cucumber into 5 mm (. in) rounds. Pour the pickling liquid over the cucumber and leave for at least 2 hours. SOY DRESSING To make the soy dressing, place all the ingredients in an upright blender except the grapeseed oil and process well. With the blender running, slowly pour the oil in to emulsify the dressing. Mash the avocado with the milk and push it through a fine sieve. Process the wakame finely in an electric spice grinder. To serve Arrange the tuna on a plate and place small spoonfuls of avocado on each piece of fish. Drizzle over 2 teaspoons of the soy dressing. Season the tuna lightly with sea salt. Place one piece of pickled cucumber on each piece of tuna. Place a slice of radish on to each piece of tuna. Sprinkle the whole dish with wakame powder. SERVES 2–4

Rich expressive flavours of cassis, mulberry and a hint of eucalypt. French oak maturation adds touches of dark chocolate, cedar and spice. This wine has an aroma of rich black currant, subtle spice, tomato leaf and a touch of eucalypt. French oak maturation is also evident with subtle aromas of cedar and dark chocolate. Wine can e enjoyed now but will reward careful cellaring up to and possibly beyond 2022. Available at all good liquor outlets and restaurants.

space to entertain, relax and enjoy the outdoors. Award-winning landscape designer Daniel Tyrrell says the best way to start is to think of your outdoor area as a destination. “Aim to create a space that invites people outdoors. You can use seating with outdoor cushions that introduce colour. Or arrange a collection of pots with a mix of your favourite plants, such as herbs, succulents and bulbs, that encourage your interaction,” Daniel says. However you plan to use your outdoors this season, there are lots of easy ways to achieve your perfect outdoor space without busting the budget. Daniel's Top Tips to create a stylish outdoor space... 1. Create a destination. Aim to create a space that invites people outdoors. “You can use seating with outdoor cushions that introduce colour. Or arrange a collection of pots with a mix of your favourite plants, such as herbs, succulents and bulbs, which encourage your interaction. The pots could be linked to other features, for example, by painting a couple to echo an existing colour in the garden. 2. Lighten up. Garden lighting can make a huge difference to the way a garden feels after the sun goes down and will directly affect how you use your outdoor space,” says Daniel. “Bright light is good for everyday functions like getting that forgotten washing from the line, but it often destroys the mood and creates washed out foregrounds and dark gardens. But not enough lighting is just as bad.” Choose good quality well-planned garden lighting to extend the life of your garden and provide another room for entertaining. 3. Know when to be brave. Show restraint in all things colour, features and furniture,” Daniel says. “Be brave with your colour palette and commit to a few over many. Features are only that if they are rare, so again be bold and commit to one or two.” Try Cabot's Timbercolour, an exterior paint available in a range of solid colours and specifically formulated to nourish and protect timber surfaces and decking. Will the whole family be out there every afternoon and evening, playing games and enjoying alfresco meals? Or is it a space you’ll only use when guests are over? Take the time to think about how you will use the space, then plan your design to fit. You don’t need a huge outdoor room. Creating your perfect alfresco space could be as simple as sprucing up your deck. With the right personal touches, your deck can become an inviting

Think outside the brick box‌

Home owners are encouraged to think outside bland brick boxes and embrace design freedom. Designed to stylishly brace timber frames, Scyon Walls are the solution to a boring, old-fashioned brick cladding look - by giving any home an architecturally-designed facelift.

T

he walls are an advanced cement composite cladding that is lighter weight but heavy duty in performance. The panels and boards can be mixed and matched to create a wide variety of styles and mods, and imaginations are not limited to particular colours, as the cladding comes pre-primed and is a wonderful canvas for durable exterior paint. The Scyon Walls range is an ideal external wall for timber framed homes, after all, an estimated 85% of Australian homes are built with timber structures. And, Queensland homes with their extended verandahs and stilt homes is a perfect example. With the walls designed to be attached directly to the frame, taking up less space than brick veneer cladding or double brick wall, while offering brace support to the frame. Nailing on Scyon's large panels and slot-together boards typically takes much less time than building brick-by-brick and you can let your imagination run wild with colour. umber one tip is that it’s worth finding an interior designer to work with to maximise the impact of your bathroom. It doesn’t cost as much as you think and can have a lasting impact and add substantial value to your house. • Lighting is crucial for bathrooms. If possible, try to get wall-mount lights at each side of the mirror. For general lighting, use ceiling-mounted fixtures. Pendants lights or chandeliers create a luxurious effect. • Design the bathroom around your bathtub. It’s an important choice that will affect the look, feel and traffic flow of the room.

10Bathroom

• Take some time to choose your shower selection. A hand shower is great for getting an all-over clean. Men tend to like the large ceiling or wall-mounted showerheads for a good soaking. Consider using both, to keep everyone happy. A great shower can start your day right so it is worth finding one that you love.

tips... from NCP’s Tracy Wilkins

• Express your style with a dramatic vanity. There are so many different materials, textures, colours and styles these days for your vanity and bathroom cabinetry. Dramatic colours like black can work well, but be aware that trends can date over time.

Ideas...

• Don’t forget the storage. You’ll need plenty of space for towels, cosmetics and bathroom bits and pieces, so ensure you have plenty of room. If space is tight, look at shelving options.

90

NoosaStyleLiving

• Bathroom vanities with an integrated sink or undermount bathroom sinks make it easy to keep things clean with a quick wipe-down. • A large, high quality mirror is worth investing in. It will last a long time, reflect light and make a big difference to this special space. • Ensure you have sufficient ventilation. A window is always good but a second source of ventilation such as an extractor fan that takes warm, humid air outside will help ensure you avoid damp and mould. • Consider a skylight. If the construction of your bathroom allows, a skylight is wonderful for bringing in natural light without affecting your privacy. www.ncpbathroomcentres.com.au

Reflective Surfaces

92

NoosaStyleLiving

The reflective style is all about mirrored products and surfaces, with metal and silver accents to create a cool and chic vibe. Over the past few years, there has been a progression towards eye-catching materials and surfaces, such as glass and mirrored surfaces which are typically saved for the bathrooms. Now they are being used in the rest of the home. Reflective surfaces not only carry light around the room, but also create an optical illusion, so that the space seems larger than it actually is (always a plus), and unifies the surfaces in the space. The key to the reflective style is simple - think all things shine, gloss and mirror. There is room for some interpretations too, with different finishes giving different light refraction - and added depth and perception.

The chic bold colours and evocative designs of the retro era are set for a revival in interiors and lighting this year, according to leading Australian lighting company Brilliant Lighting. Retro chic can be achieved by mixing vibrant colour with the opulent tones of black, brass and darkened timber. In particular, blue is set to be a dominant hue

this season, bringing a fresh twist on the recently popular teal. This vibrancy hints at the pop art movement of the mid-century, with the retro feel also achievable by incorporating pared back classic shapes of the midcentury. Update the look by selecting pieces in sophisticated materials and textures throughout the rest of the living space which will also calm the vivid colour. www.brilliantlighting.co m.au

Beach and surf art reaches back as far as 3000 years ago to Peru where its indigenous artists carved bas-reliefs of surfers that survive today. The interface of beach, ocean and surf culture with art is stronger today than ever, extending and encompassing clothing and music and being expressed in many different art genres – realism including photography, surrealism, abstract and through graffiti and music.

I

n the Noosa Festival of Surfing month of March and continuing through to 1 May, Noosa Regional Gallery shall be artistically showcasing that ocean, waves, beach and surf culture with two unique exhibitions that undoubtedly will draw in many of our Eastern Coast dwellers and beach lovers. Commencing on Thursday 10 March a travelling exhibition of Australian beach photography ‘Waves & Water’ shall be at the Gallery. Iconic photographs capture Australian beach culture from the 1930s to today. Sunbathers, swimmers, surfers and surf life savers are depicted in this collection of photographs from the Australian National Maritime Museum. The exhibition includes Max Dupain’s iconic image, the Sunbaker, Ray Leighton’s surfers posed with their longboards, images from Jeff Carter’s 1960s surfing safari, and Roger Scott’s ‘critical moment’ photographs taken as an individual catches a wave or dives into the ocean. Anne Zahalka explores ideas of Australian cultural identity and stereotypes by reworking familiar images from the media and the history of art in the series Bondi: playground of the Pacific. Narelle Autio provides a different view of the ocean swimmer from beneath the surface of the waves, and Ian Lever renders the beauty and moods of Sydney’s ocean pools at dawn and dusk. A suitcase with swimming costumes, towel, bathing cap and laminated magazine articles travels with the Waves & Water exhibition. Visitors are encouraged to examine the contents of the suitcase which reflect changing aspects of popular beach and surf culture, particularly swimwear styles such as the bikini and ‘budgie smugglers’. And during the school holidays, workshops shall be conducted for children 5 to 12 years – Stoked About Waves and Water – on Wednesday 30 March Thursday 31 March Wednesday 6 April and Thursday 7 April.

And in celebration of the 25th year of the annual Noosa Festival of Surfing event in March, Noosa Regional Gallery has co-curated with the Festival organisers the exhibition “25 Years of Pure Stoke: Noosa Festival of Surfing Jubilee”. Noosa Regional Gallery Director Nina Shadforth said “Surfing is synonymous with Noosa and this exhibition celebrates local achievements and highlights the history of this ever-popular world renowned surfing event, through photography, film trophies, surfboards and memorabilia”. The Noosa Festival of Surfing recognises the soul of surfing in one of the best surf locations in the world. It attracts surfers from young grommets of 15 years through to the seasoned over 65’s who participate in amateur, professional, teams and specialty categories. While the Noosa Festival of Surfing is conducted this year from Saturday 5th to Sunday 13th March, the Noosa Regional Gallery exhibition will be officially opened on Thursday 10 March at 6pm with guest speakers Festival founder and organiser Phil Jarratt and surf industry pioneer, Festival ambassador Layne Beachley and surfboard designer Bob McTavish and shall continue through to Sunday 1 May. Another date to have in your diary – xyz – the Surfing Legends Floor Talk – when you can enjoy a relaxed chat with local surfing legends while being surrounded by surfing memorabilia. Noosa Festival of Surfing collectible merchandise, signed copies of Phil Jarratt’s book: A Cup of Tea with God, together with local artisan products shall be available at the Noosa Regional Gallery Shop. NS Artist:Jeannie Mills Pwerle “Bush Plum”

Shifting Sands … My Country, My Dreaming.

“Given my passion for Aboriginal art, the only difficulty I have when curating an exhibition is settling on a single organising principle for selecting the work”, says art gallery owner, Jan Sinclair.

B

ecause Aboriginal art is based on stories and knowledge about important cultural and spiritual beliefs, it covers many themes. Themes as diverse as culture, ancestors, creation, Songlines, water, fire, bush food, ceremonies and the law are depicted making it daunting to pull into a cohesive exhibit”. At the heart of all Aboriginal culture is a deep

and spiritual connection to Country, and it is this ongoing connection to Country which gives rise to all the stories that have shaped Aboriginal culture over tens of thousands of years. Jan explained that the stories depicted in the paintings are connected to an individual through family lineage, as each successive generation becomes the custodian for cultural events and stories of family or skin groups. She says: “In practice, this means that whatever the theme, the artist been awarded the privilege and the right to paint that specific story by traditional custodians who have passed these rights down strict generational lines”. Aboriginal stories were not traditionally committed to permanent medium. Instead they were exclusively painted onto bodies, or drawn in ochre on rocks deep within caves and spiritual locations. They were also drawn in sand and once used either danced over during ceremonial celebrations, or left to ripple away on the wind. Sand drawings are still used extensively to share all forms of knowledge as well as directions to spiritual and ceremonial sites, and the location of bush food and water sources. These ancient symbols, sacred sites and secret locations are known only to the initiated members of specific family groups or connected

communities and are never shared with outsiders. However, these sacred stories were exposed a little in the early 1970’s through a controversial event in the central desert community of Papunya in the Northern Territory. Local school children and several of the male elders were encouraged to paint their ancient Dreaming symbols on the schoolhouse. After initial concern and the rise of masking techniques such as dotting, this early exposure has evolved into the Aboriginal art movement. Jan says: “Still today, the stories depicted in paintings are only known to us in the broadest terms. Some detail will always remain sacred and locked away with their traditional custodians”. Shifting Sands … My Country, My Dreaming presents the work of many Aboriginal artists - some regarded as the genre’s old masters, others lesser know, but with long generational connections to ancient stories. FINE ART GALLERY Queensland's first modernist in Oils‌ and the fight that drove him to Wales. In 1977 I was one of the first to hear of the return of Vincent Brown to Brisbane from Wales, where he had lived for 37 years. Vincent returned to supervise the estate of his brother George. George had held the key to Vincent's first 40 years in an archive that contained much of Vincent's early works, and as I found on arrival in the Fortitude Valley, also a wonderful art library. Vincent was born in Brisbane in 1901, and by 1920 was working as a trainee commercial artist at Sodens. During his 15 years at Sodens, in his spare time he painted beautiful watercolours in the manner of his hero Toowoomba's J.J. Hilder, Australia's master of the 'wet paper' Watercolourists. Hilder died in 1916, and his dealer Adolph Albers subsequently drove Vincent to distraction to supply Hilder lookalikes to fill the market. In 1936 bored with watercolours, Vincent took off to London, and for three years studied at the Royal Academy School under Schwabe and McNab. And, fell in love with Modernism.

AND MANY MORE Also British and European works On his return to Brisbane, Vincent held several shows containing works painted both in England and on his return, in Australia. In one such Brisbane show he hung an oil entitled 'A fight outside the Sportsman's Hotel in Spring Hill', The publican/owner of the hotel sued him for bringing his hotel into disrepute. Luckily for Vincent, the magistrate knew of the Sportsman's public nuisance record (as did the rest of Brisbane) and the case was thrown out of court. This was enough for Vincent, and after a marriage to his partner Dorothy (that would last for 60 years), Vincent took off for Wales, where he taught in two schools, and painted and exhibited. I own several of Vincent's modernist works, the one illustrated above is Vincent's 1940 version of David's head being offered to Salome. This painting amply illustrates Vincent's second artistic love, that of the theatrical stage set. Vincent died peacefully at his family's holiday home on Kirra Headland on Queensland's Gold Coast - aged 100 years. NS May Gibbs More Than A Fairy Tale An artistic life By: Robert Holden & Jane Brummitt Published by: Hardie Grant Books RRP $29.99 “As far as I can remember, it was just a fairytale all the time”…May Gibbs A wonderful book that explores the early life and artistic career of May Gibbs in detail, outlining the remarkable legacy of a woman who through her illustrations, entered the language and Imagination of generations of Australians and became synonymous with an Australian sense of identity and selfimage. Her gum-nut babies remain familiar images that have endeared themselves to generations of devoted followers worldwide. Following a similar trajectory to that of her fellow Australian writer and contemporary Miles Franklin, May Gibbs travelled to England in a quest to develop as an artist, becoming an early supporter of the suffragettes. Merging together beachside living with a vibrant art space, Enigmatic Drawings Fine Art Gallery is a reflection of the rich arts community both within Noosa and worldwide. The recent addition of the gallery space within Netanya Noosa has transformed the refurbished foyer with evocative, bold watercolours and profound drawings that are synonymous with the gallery and it's artists. The gallery's primary showcase is founding artist George Allan, with his intriguing and inexplicable art entitled Enigmatic Drawings, as well as Guest Artist Chelsea Hopkins-Allan with many more artists to be featured in future. George's work Enigmatic Drawings has been aptly named due to their unprecedented nature and detail which cannot be found in existing art genres. The body of work consists of the completed First and Second-Series and the first drawing of the Third-Series with further works imminent. Without artistic experience or inclination the artist began the drawings spontaneously in 2001 with no intention of publicly sharing the work. When circulated by the academic and scientific community alike, it was evident that the artwork was meant to be shared with the wider public. Since sharing the body of work in 2011, the impact of the drawings has provoked an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from a global audience across 6 continents and over 100 countries. Upon viewing the artwork the reaction from most is usually one of astonishment and intrigue; for some it is a profound experience. To this end, the artist offers the artwork without explanation or opinion, and prefers the viewer to make up their own mind. Complimenting George's work is Guest Artist, Chelsea Hopkins-Allan with her vibrant mixed media pieces. As an environmental scientist, Chelsea’s intention is to capture and share the simple yet incredible visual details of nature that we can sometimes miss if we are not looking for them. The healing influence of colour and the value of focus and meditation also plays an important role in the concept of Chelsea's work, particularly the Butterfly Wing-Scales and Crochet Web Mandala series which are featured at the gallery. The gallery showcases a number of original pieces as well as a range of limited and open edition fine art reproductions which can be produced at custom sizes. Visitors now also have the opportunity to visualise their artwork selection in their own home or office through the gallery's interior mock-up service. In consultation with the in-house interior designer, this service ensures every consideration is made when selecting an artwork such as the colours, size and the available wall space. We encourage everyone to experience the impact of the intriguing and powerful artwork in this new and exciting space on Hastings Street - it's truly a hidden gem. The dog whis

Profile

If you’ve ever watched the Noosa Surf Festival, it’s likely you’ve seen nationally renowned Chris de Aboitiz leading the way at the ‘Surf Dog Spectacular’. But, as Coco SeymourGriffin discovers, it’s not all waggy tails and wet noses, for Chris has a very real message underneath.

orn in Sydney, raised in Hawaii and local to Noosa for the past 30 years, Chris de Aboitiz is a man of two passions as the leading surf dog trainer in Australia – dogs and water. So, it is of little surprise that you may have seen him recently riding the waves at the Noosa Surf Classic ‘Surf Dog Spectacular’ with his pack of dogs, soaking up the pure stoke, having been the original instigator of this section of the competition many years ago. The focus of media attention over the years for various pursuits, Chris is a man of many talents (not to mention father of the kite surfing champion, Keahi de Aboitiz). A former tandem world champion surfer and credited with bringing stand up paddle (SUP) surf to Australia, Chris has more recently become known for his role as a dog whisperer – with his devotion to rescuing dogs and educating owners on dog behaviour, his latest greatest mission. “I have always taught water sports – surfing, sailing etc., arriving in Noosa from Hawaii when I was 24, having worked on the beach my whole life to that point,” explains Chris. “Shortly after settling in Noosa, I started Noosa Longboards [in 1994], and

later set up the first kite surf shop in Australia in 1999, subsequently bringing SUP to Australia in 2006.” With Chris having surfed with his dogs for the past 15 years, it was his eldest dog, Lani, who first taught Chris the ways of doggy aquatics. Little did Chris know what a pathway he was carving out for himself, being approached to get involved with the Surf Dog Spectacular some years after (having become quite the local hero with his four-legged friends on the Noosa surf circuit), becoming an animal therapist and leading expert in canine body language. "They love doing it,” smiles Chris. “If you think – dogs enjoy a good walk, so why wouldn’t they love a surf? It’s about hanging out and having fun. It's a good way to exercise a dog, too. Teaching dogs is easy. The hardest part is teaching the owners." With Chris now a beloved advocate for dogs, forming his dog whisperer school Natural Balance Dog in 2006, his gamechanging calling is in full swing. “It’s so important that we change the current mindset surrounding dogs,” reveals Chris. “People humanise animals without realising, and it is this that creates problems. With a little

simple knowledge, there are many dog behavioural disorders that can be avoided or even fixed. It’s just a question of knowing how your dog thinks and what they are telling you. In fact, it’s much like parenting.” Believing that the central key to a dog’s mental wellbeing is through the education and training of owners in the fundamentals of dog pack behaviour, Chris’s ability in reading and interpreting dogs has clearly set him apart in the industry, along with his talent for creating change. “So many beautiful dogs get euthanized for their ‘personality faults’ when they needn’t, and so often, owners pick the wrong dogs for their lifestyle. My role is about teaching others so that they can better understand their dogs and communicate with them.” As a result, Chris now spends his days not only in the water, but rescuing dogs, rehabilitating dogs and equally as importantly, raising awareness – with his loyal tribe of five waggy friends (Lani, Rama, Murphy, Millie and Max) by his side. Having recently travelled by road to Cairns and down to Melbourne with his devoted partner Ana, dog surfing all the way to garner attention in order to get his message heard, Chris is intent on making waves for the greater good. “If I can help one dog have a better relationship with their owner, all the hard work is worth it. It’s a win-win for everyone. The skills I pass on are lifelong. My goal is to create a discussion around this topic and challenge the status quo,” says Chris. Much loved by his community and furry friends for his cause and energetic persona (not to mention his exotic accent and good looks at 53), like everything else he has done with his life, Chris is making an impact. With a plethora of sponsors under his belt and a beautiful 40-acre property in Agnes Water that he shares with Ana now the home to a host of his rescue dogs with their very own ‘dog lounge’, Chris is the ultimate ‘doggy daddy‘ – a therapist, a counsellor, a trainer and a whisperer rolled into one. And there’s sure to be no happier dog than one with Chris by their side.

Chris de Aboitiz and partner Ana

6 steps to dog surfing • Place your dog in a ‘sit and stay’ position on the beach. • Place your board on the beach and invite them onto it in a ‘sit, stay’ position. • Let your dog remain there for a few moments and then call them off the board. You can use a lead if you like when teaching them to move on and off the board. • Put the board by the water’s edge and invite your dog onto the board and slide the board into the water with your dog on the board in a ‘sit’ position. NB. Don’t do this in big waves! The water should be calm and flat (use your common sense). • Let your dog float around on the board and then bring the board back to the beach and invite the dog off. Now you’re ready to take your dog for a paddle in flat water. • Paddle your dog somewhere fun, for example the next cove along, where you both can play. After one or two trips, the issue will be keeping your dog off the board!

The latest expedition cruise holiday from Cruise Traveller, named ‘Archipelagos of the Indian Ocean’ offers both. The ship is as fine as expedition ships come: Silver Discoverer, part of the prestige Silversea fleet, carrying no more than 120 guests. Discover historic Sri Lankan fortresses and shop for spices in local bazaars – along routes once traversed by Marco Polo. ‘Archipelagos of the Indian Ocean’ lasts 18 nights and costs from A$14,985 per person twin share. At the heart of this fly-free/stay-free offer is a 15-night luxury, expedition-style cruise on Silver Discoverer. Aboard, you’ll stay in an Explorer Suite (complete with porthole). The holiday gets underway on 2 December 2016, with a free flight from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth to Phuket in Thailand. There’s a free, three-night stay in Phuket with breakfast and transfers, followed by the 15-night luxury cruise aboard Silver Discoverer from Thailand to

Maldives visiting India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka on the way. The price includes ships tips, drinks, shore excursions and Zodiac expedition team leadership. The sleek, 120-guest Silver Discoverer is the perfect viewing platform, with plenty of deck space so that a breaching whale or a pod of dolphins is always within sight. Silver Discoverer’s shallow draft allows the ship to navigate closer to shore. A fleet of 12 Zodiacs lets guests land on isolated shores and explore up-close and indepth. Silver Discoverer’s famed personalised service stems from having the best crew-to-guest ratio in expedition cruising. Butler service extends to every suite and stateroom, so all guests are pampered equally. Openseating dining options let you dine when you want with whomever you please. Beverages are supplied in your suite and throughout the ship, including select wines, premium spirits, specialty coffees and soft drinks, plus your own tailored mini-bar. In-suite dining and room service is available from 6am to 11pm, and other special touches include enrichment lectures by a highly qualified expeditions team; guided Zodiac, land and sea tours, and shore activities led by the expeditions team. The cruise visits places remote, little-known and unspoiled. Highlights include Lampi Marine National Park on uninhabited Kyun Tan Shey (Lampi Island) in the Mergui Archipelago. Declared an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003, this park protects evergreen and mangrove forests, beaches and dunes, coral reefs, sea grasses and a rich biodiversity of over 1000 recorded species. Wildlife includes macaques, dusky langur and lesser mouse-deer, as well as four species of hornbills, eight different kingfishers, white-bellied Sea Eagles and about 215 other bird species. Spend an evening at Padonmar Restaurant, one of Yangon’s finest, to experience authentic home-cooked Myanmar cuisine, with performance by a group of traditional Burmese puppeteers. One complimentary choice on the cruise is to fly to Bagan to see stunning pagodas and temples. Another highlight will be the opportunity, on most cruises, to meet Nobel Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s former assistant Ma Thanegi, who will speak about recent events, Suu Kyi and her years in prison as a result of her activism. The cruise also takes in museums, old British forts,

We Will Rock You... S

ince 2002 over 15 million theatregoers in 17 countries have been thrilled by this awe-inspiring production, which is based on the songs of Queen with a book by Ben Elton (The Young Ones, Blackadder, Popcorn). Elton fashioned this hilarious futurist comedy around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs including We are the Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and of course, We Will Rock You. WE WILL ROCK YOU reflects the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances and earned the band its pinnacle position in rock history. With Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor as music supervisors and “a band without parallel in the theatre” behind the cast, the audience can expect the show to rock as fiercely as the best of Queen’s concerts. The original Australian tour opened at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on 7 August, 2003 with a record advance, and Brian May and Roger Taylor in attendance. Australia was the first country outside the UK to produce a local version of the mega-hit musical, and the production dominated the 2004 Helpmann Awards, receiving five Helpmann
