Out & about GREAT TIMES & EVENTS

Self portrait of a Dreamer… Talented local artist, Stefan Koch opened his quaint, home studio recently, to welcome invited guests to the unveiling of his entry for this year’s Archibald Portrait Prize. The work, titled ‘Self Portrait of a Dreamer’, is a striking 1.8metre-high portrait, was created using acrylic paint and mixed media on linen. Stefan’s work embodies his sense of freedom and sense of place. A dream honed from years of living within his artistic family, and learning that freedom comes from a ‘no boundaries’ philosophy, imposed on oneself by ethnicity or place of birth. Although the prestigious award (announced in May) carries a first place prize of $100,000.00, Stefan says that he would be more than happy to just have his portrait chosen to hang at the exhibition in the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

A Koala encounter at Peppers

What a perfect location for a fund-raising afternoon tea. Stunning views of the Noosa River and delectable cakes and cookies to munch on, while organising the coming months’ fundraising events to raise the much-needed funds for the Christmas family shopping day at the J. Founder of the local charity, Lorraine Kenway was definitely proving her similarity to the ‘Duracell bunny’, as she raced in from Zonta Club of Noosa’s International Women’s Day breakfast at Waterfront, via her Classy Lady Boutique in Gympie Terrace, to oversee the afternoon tea before racing back to the boutique again.

Young Noah wasn’t sure about this furry little Koala at the presentation of a $5,000 cheque from Peppers Noosa Resort to the Noosa & District Landcare Group. A donation from every conference booked at the resort is donated There’s never been a better reason to book your next conference at Peppers! From the Sunshine Coast surf to the dance floor… Local Sunshine Coast favourite, Jett Kenny, the 24-year-old son of Lisa Curry and Grant Kenny, is not only an accomplished lifesaver but he’s also fast becoming a top model - and now dancer! Based on the Sunshine Coast, Jett dared to bare it all (thanks to a wardrobe malfunction) in last year’s television hit The Real Full Monty, all in the name of charity and cancer awareness. Now he’s proving that a long-legged surfer with a ripped upper body can also learn a few new tricks out of the water with his participation on the new look, 2019 Dancing with the Stars. Jett flies from the Sunshine Coast to Sydney for the DWTS shows from Sunday to Tuesday, leaving only 3 days to train back home, which has been a bit daunting. It’s difficult to squeeze everything in but he finds the time. All nerves aside, Jett’s been more worried about nailing his routine each week with his Tasmanian dance partner, Lily Cornish, and doing the Sunshine Coast and his chosen charity proud, than winning. Although things may be changing now that his true sportsman’s competitive nature is coming into play. Lily and Jett are the youngest competitors this year, and viewers have been thrilled by how well they are going. And, I think the pair are now determined to be there at the end. And, who knows Lily might just find the Sunshine Coast beckoning her too. Be sure to put your votes in: www.tenplay.com.au/channel-ten/ dancing-with-the-stars/vote

“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.” Jim Bishop

W

elcome to our beautiful Autumn issue...

Editor/ Publisher Kaylene Murray

This season sees Noosa and the surrounding hinterland come alive with amazing annual events, artist exhibitions and live theatre,

It’s a time when we welcome the cooler days and nights, after a long, hot summer. Each season has its blessings and Autumn is no exception, with its softer breezes, gentle blue skies and wispy white clouds. It’s still warm enough to swim in the ocean - and cool enough to envelop yourself in a beautiful soft shawl to wander around the restaurant scene at night. Autumn brings some ending to the beautiful flowerings of Spring and Summer - but also showers the pavements with leaves of rich reds, burnished browns and golds. A photographers dream season.

Proud member & supporter of Noosa events & festivals

Within our Autumn-inspired pages you’ll find interior furnishing styles to embrace in your home over the coming months, as we head towards Winter.

new feature wall colour to highlight the season. You’ll be introduced to a few very exciting locals, including English art-world legend Peter Philips, who now calls Noosa home; as well as a young Sunshine Beach couple, Ben and Rebekah who with daughter Leilani, have taken the leap to work in Papua New Guinea for the next couple of years: and we’ll also introduce you to a couple of well-known Far Nth Qld chefs, who have both opened new restaurants in Noosaville. In keeping with Australia’s love affair with beautiful food and fabulous wines and cocktails, I’ve also personally tasted an eclectic array of dishes, cocktails and wines, to ensure that you have all the information you’ll need this season to entertain your family and friends. And, on that note, we’re happy to announce that we’re in the final weeks of producing our ‘iconic’ NOOSA STYLE FOOD & WINE… the Cookbook. So get ready, it’s almost here. Also inside our engaging pages this season, you’ll also find exciting theatre news - both local and big city, great reads - from new cookbooks to travel, stunning artworks and beautiful jewellery - as well as the very best fashion and accessories available, including both local, Australian and international labels. Story: VIOLET WILDER

E

lsa Pataky’s journey around the various corridors of the showbiz maze has been an interesting one. Perhaps best known as the wife of Chris Hemsworth, the 42-year-old Spaniard is very much her own person who, long before swapping phone numbers with arguably our most impressive-looking modern-day export, had spent over a decade skirting around European movies whilst forging the early seeds of a successful modelling career.
Although her first box office break came via 2010’s slightly hysterical Snakes on a Plane, and while her regular reprisal of Elena Neves in the Fast & The Furious franchise has also given the Madrid-born beauty a high-octane, high-maintenance image, in truth, recent years have seen the actress consciously move away from such heavy fuel. “I believe you get to a point in life where, yes, you remain grateful for

all the excitement; you’re still thrilled by the bright lights, and you will never stop yearning for the glamour and the glitz… but deep down, you just want a bit of normality back,” she begins. “I think, in my head, I have lived enough of the crazy stuff to last me for a lifetime, and I’m in a mindset now where I can just put that to one side and say, ‘that’s done’”. Sure, enough, Elsa has been true to her word. When, in 2015, husband Chris, beautiful daughter India Rose (now six) and twin sons Tristan and Sasha (four) were seen to be laying down tracks again in their favourite Australian getaway at Byron Bay, the suspicion was it would be a holiday base outside of life in LA. Keith Urban & Kelli Clarkson belting it out!

But the couple, who married in December 2010, announced their residence on the same Northern New South Wales coast to which

Hemsworth feels such an affinity despite having grown up in Melbourne and the Outback, was actually a permanent switch. “You get to the point where you have to ask why you are living in a certain place,” Elsa continues. “If we couldn’t say we were using LA or even America for a number of good, positive things outside of work, then what was really the reason to have our children grow up there?

“When air travel and the ability to get around the world is now easier than ever before, it seemed such an obvious choice to come back to Australia, and I don’t think we’ve regretted that decision for a single moment.” And as if to prove the fact the actress’s work commitments can be maintained, she starred in last year’s Tidelands, the first original

NS the rocks and, in general, cherished family time around the hills of Byron Bay. “I find family time so warm and so comforting, and I am so thrilled we have discovered this life in Byron Bay. I am so proud of what we have and I want others to draw inspiration for their special family time too,” she says, referencing the fact her Instagram feed shows an idyllic, warm, loving family life, that while aspirational and dreamy, still retains a core of humility. “I think if you show people Hollywood mansions, they turn off; but if it’s family, beaches, dinner time… we well all want those simple things.” Elsa, who starred opposite her husband in 2018 military movie 12 Strong, admits that although having a break from day-to-day parenting is important, though she can never be away for long. “When we did that film together it was such a nice, unusual experience. It was like a holiday for us because we left the kids for a week, and we enjoyed the scenes together, but we were both desperate to get back. “I think that’s always the sign you belong somewhere – it’s not always how you feel when you are there; it’s how you feel when you go away from that place.”

Australian TV series shot by Netflix. With it being filmed entirely on the South East Queensland coast, Pataky admits it straight away endorsed their decision to return to the Southern Hemisphere. “It was a dream to be able to film Tidelands so close to where we live. I think of how the fictional Orphelin Bay could have been anywhere really, yet I was able to have both a work project and the kids still so close by… well, it was a dream for me.” Creatively, Elsa Pataky is versatile and forward-thinking. She speaks six languages, has a university degree in journalism, and comes from strong stock, with her father a biochemist and her mother a respected publicist. “I need projects that excite and engage me, and the strength of the story behind Tidelands was a big thing… you think of amazing characters, the mythology about sirens - it is those sorts of stories I always want to know more about.” “I play a half-human, half-siren, but the real quality of the script, as far as characters go, is about who they are and not what they are. I really liked the complexity in the story-telling from the moment that I read it.” While Hemsworth, seven years his wife’s junior, looks set for another busy year – he is starring in Avengers: Endgame, Men In Black: International and Dhaka, as well as getting started on a Hulk Hogan biopic – he has promised his wife more late-night lounging, bonfires, picturesque, effortless afternoons on the beach, scaling

ELSA QUICKFIRE Q&A Q: You spend a lot of time with Matt Damon and his beautiful wife Lucy… are you trying to persuade them to come to live Down Under? ELSA: “I am trying, I am trying! They are good friends of ours and I always say how beautiful life is here in Byron. We have very similar lives, actually – they have four girls and we have our three kids. “We convinced them to come to Australia and spend some time with us, but on the first day here Matt stepped on a python, which was really funny. I couldn’t believe it - I mean, what are the odds of that happening on a first trip to Australia? Despite that I think they still like it here!”

12

NoosaStyleLiving

Q: What are your hopes for India, Tristan and Sasha when it comes to growing up in on the coast? ELSA: “It is difficult for me to think of anything more perfect for the children. Naturally my childhood was very happy as well, but it was in Madrid and was very different – a city. “I think children need freedom and space to express themselves, and that is what we have in abundance in Australia.” Do you feel Australian yet? ELSA: “I am feeling more that way every day. I am not there yet and I still struggle with some of the terms and ideas, but it is a very homely place with friendly people, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

MP Life – Noosa Style!

F

or readers who are blessed to call Noosa home – you will understand when I say, there is no greater feeling than getting excited about having your Christmas holiday right where you live! Now it may seem a bit ‘over the top’ and has been said many times – but the sheer simplicity of weeding while listening to the birdlife, getting a glimpse of a swamp wallaby whilst sipping on a cold beverage (after the chores are done – of course!) and taking that walk in the gloaming to the chorus of cicadas – there is nothing better. Oh yes, and this year, we were blessed with the pitter-patter (see roar!) of our ‘big kids’ and grandies, who all jumped into tents set up lagoonside, claimed shady spots for bocce, swam, and played some seriously competitive Pictionary! The boys even managed to sneak in the traditional Boxing Day cricket. A week of bliss. In amongst, I got to play secret shopper at our casualty department (twice) and ‘holiday’ dentist and can safely say they did an outstanding job! Now, back in full Parliament mode, I am left with beautiful memories of a fabulous Christmas, including those gifts that keep on giving… ruskets, dummies and Kinder surprise toys that seem to hide in the strangest of places, including even a piece of jigsaw in my briefcase? For those that get frustrated of how ‘loved’ our beautiful home becomes at holiday times – the congestion, parking woes, secret spots that are no longer secret, and logistical loads including waste and the refreshing of ablution blocks….remember to always think of how lucky we are. Many of us came to Noosa as visitors before we moved here permanently, and now as locals, we are so fortunate to have access year round to what others may only have briefly. As I was wisely advised many moons ago by a 4th generation ‘Noosaite’…when the crowds converge, take the opportunity to stock up on goodies for a ‘lock the gate’ week, use the excuse of avoiding peak times to travel via a different time, route or mode (it is really interesting who you meet when leaving the car at Tewantin and take the ferry into ‘town’!) Alternatively, head for ‘an explore’ – there are so many great road trips to be had in our Country Noosa areas and beyond, with one of our favourites being to head ‘west’. Many residents also do a house swap to explore another region, state or even country (now who wouldn’t want to do a swap to Noosa?) Or simply ditch the car, jump on a train and do a mystery tour! For those that are not fortunate enough to have that Christmas/New Year week off as they look after our visitors, thank you for holding the fort. You do us proud every holiday season, and we appreciate the extra yards that you go through, including finding somewhere to park in getting to work! We are so blessed to live in an electorate with incredible diversity – bush, beach, rolling countryside, river and lakes. However for me, those choices are ones that I make during the ‘low’ season as part of my contribution to lessening the ‘loving’ and providing an extra car spot. Plus it’s a perfect excuse to store up on provisions, take my loved ones hostage, and maybe even have a Pictionary win? Welcome to 2019 everyone!

Warmest regards

Beautiful jewellery has the power to transport us beyond the realms of the ordinary, to make us feel good about ourselves, and guide our lives toward experiences that are extraordinary.

M

elanie Rowland, the Creative Director of Aubrey learnt this as a young child, playing dress-up with her grandmother’s jewellery. A favourite piece was an elaborate antique, turquoise and gold ring that once belonged to a titled lady. Wearing this ring, Melanie felt transformed. She was no longer a little child, she was an elegant grownup. Her own first ‘grown-up’ piece of jewellery, as Melanie remembers, was a three stone diamond ring set in gold and platinum; a ring that her mother had given to her in her early twenties, and, what she described as ‘the past, the present, the future’. Melanie’s mother had inherited this ring from a family friend called Aunty Barbara Aubrey. This beautiful ring gifted to her, was now to become Melanie’s future. With a present-day attitude towards jewellery design, The Aubrey range is distinguished by the company’s meticulous attention to detail. Gemstones are sourced from around the world - and only partner with companies who uphold the social responsibility of maintaining ethically sourced and conflictfree gems and diamonds, coming from Burma, Colombia, Zambia, Ceylon and Kashmir. Established in 2018, with new designs created regularly, and an ‘online’ store due to be launched in April 2019, shopping for jewellery has never been easier. Should the allure of dazzling gems be too great, you can always book a private viewing with Melanie.

TRANSIT PEOPLE... TRANSIT people are citizens of the world with their own personalities. They are inquisitive, elegant and capable of understanding culture and appreciating the true value of everything around us. They pay no heed to passing fads. They go straight to the heart of the matter and seek out the comfortable sensations that only a highly sophisticated material can convey. They are people who love restrained, timeless innovation and design.

THE COMPANY.. The parent company of TRANSIT is Tam & Company and it was founded in 1986 by Andrea Cozza, Who still runs the group today. It is still completely family run with no input from external managers or consultants, so everyone answers direct to the family. When it was founded the company had one knitting machine and one sewing machine in an area of 80 m2. Today it spans approximately 7000m2 and it has the very best production systems on the market. Tam & Company is something of a rarity because it is one of the few companies in Italy that still keeps its entire production cycle in house. Everything is conceived, designed and made on the company premises. It is a form of industrial craftsmanship . More than 100 people work for the company. They constitute the very heart of its existence.

THE PHILOSOPHY High quality raw materials, understated elegance, personality , freedom relaxation and a big focus on the quality versus price : these words encapsulate TRANSIT’s approach to both clothing and life which it sees as a search for essence and quality. They firmly believe that people should be respected and dressed, but never covered by a garment or brand as they would like the personality of their customers to shine through. Hence the desire for the family to surround itself with people whose vast experience and long careers have taught them that the key to quality is not big names but outstanding raw materials, innovative but simple designs, lots of craftsmanship and work , and a passion for beauty.

TRANSIT fashion is exclusively sold in sophisticated multi brand stores worldwide, including‌ BELLISSIMA HASTINGS STREET & NOOSA JUNCTION.

The aesthetics of the TUDOR watches of the time were in line with the fashions of the period: Art Deco in style, with cases that were rectangular, barrel-shaped or with bevelled sides. There was a vast amount of choice. At the crossroads between jewellery and timepieces, the brand’s feminine watches were notable for their delicacy, reliability and, of course, their accessible prices. THE SPORTY BLACK BAY 32Finally, in the spirit of its very first women’s divers’ watch launched in 1976, TUDOR presents the Black Bay 32 model. With TUDOR’s emblematic design, it brings all the qualities of the tool-watch to women’s wrists. Refined as well as functional, this 32 mm model features all the historical and technical design codes from the famous Black Bay line, particularly its characteristic angular “Snowflake” hands. It is also waterproof to 150 metres and fitted with a self-winding calibre. Its glossy lacquered dial is available in deep black or electric blue, the signature colour of TUDOR sports watches since the late 1960s.

In the current collection, Clair de Rose is a line entirely dedicated to women. Its ambassador is the fabulous

Beauty SECRETS AND FRAGRANCES

Stem Cells and ageing...

WHY DO CHILDREN HEAL SO FAST AND WHY DO WE AGE SO QUICKLY AFTER 50? THE ANSWER IS THE AMOUNT OF ADULT STEM CELLS IN OUR CIRCULATION. ADULT STEM CELLS ARE THE ONLY KNOWN SOURCE FOR REBUILDING THE BODY. THEY REPLACE DAMAGED OR WORN OUT CELLS AND CAN BECOME VIRTUALLY ANY OTHER CELL IN THE BODY – BRAIN, KIDNEY, LIVER, SKIN, HEART, CARTILAGE, MUSCLES, ETC.

F

rom birth to 30, we are almost bullet proof. However, after 30, a large percentage of our stem cells are no longer available (they get stuck in the bone marrow). Our bodies start accumulating aches pains, loss of elasticity in our tissues (wrinkles, grey hair etc.) At 60, we only have 10% of our own stem cells naturally migrating from the bone marrow – that’s why we age so quickly then. HOW CAN WE ACTIVATE OUR STEM CELLS NATURALLY? One of the most efficient ways is to take stem cell nutrition (a nutritional food that supports the release and activity of your own stem cells). Scientists have discovered that an aqua botanical from Lake Klamath/Oregon, known as AFA is the most potent form of stem cell nutrition. This is now available as a supplement and one dose can release 5-9 million of your own stem cells. This is indeed an opportunity to have a new beginning for yourself - imagine being able to play sport again without pain or dodgy joints, to regenerate your organs and be able to sleep better and have better eyesight. Stem cell therapy is costly (and temporary). Stem cell nutrition is a new frontier and is un-precedented in its ability to maximise health and wellness. So if you are interested in dynamic health, longevity and releasing your own stem cells naturally, then give it a go

STEM CELL NUTRITION Discover the possibilities… Stem Enhance ULTRA – the only clinically proven and patented product in history that triggers the release of our own stem cells. • ANTI-AGEING IS NOW A REALITY • PROMOTES POSITIVE MIND and MOOD • SCIENCE-BASED CLINICAL TRIALS I am 68 and now have no more brain fog, sore joints, bleeding gums, don’t wear glasses and miraculously am back to playing tennis 4 times a week. Please call me for more information on this natural product which is SAFE, EFFECTIVE and AFFORDABLE.

READY TO GET YOUR MOJO BACK – or to ‘DEFY THE AGEING PROCESS?’ Stem cells are known to help with more energy, flexibility, clarity, focus, better bone density, sleep, eyesight, and can reduce pain, rebuild cartilage and muscles and regenerate our organs, bones, tissues, skin, brain, heart, pancreas, liver, kidneys etc.

NS Voted Australia’s No1 shopping street...

. . . t S s g n i t s a H c i n o c I

Noosa Heads has long been regarded as a fashion mecca for visitors from around Australia and overseas. Travellers to the region come with only one thought in mind - to release their ‘inner fashionista’ in the high-end fashion boutiques and local stores that offer world-class designer wear, intriguing local creations, and beautiful resort and beachwear.

N

oosa’s iconic Hastings Street is a beautiful, tree-lined boulevard, boasting a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare that is a magnet for visitors, who love our cornucopia of cosmopolitan cafés, al fresco dining and restaurants, and designer shopping opportunities with a backdrop of the pristine blue ocean, seaside pathway and surfing beach.

Noosa Council has worked hard over the years to ensure the low-rise profile of the town has not changed, and guarantee that our precious beachside town will never become a metropolis. Surrounded by the calm waters of Laguna Bay, Noosa National Park and the ever-tranquil Noosa River, it’s no wonder Noosa Heads is a favourite holiday destination for families. With its laid back atmosphere, Hastings Street is the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll while considering your options. Locals and visitors alike, find there’s plenty of time to browse the bookshops for their holiday reading choices; try on some locally designed jewellery and accessories, or spend time in the local art galleries. Time moves at a slower pace in Noosa. Bay Village is perfectly positioned in the middle of Hastings Street, offering visitors a selection of casual dining options, whether its an early morning coffee to start your day, a quick snack on the run before hitting the surf, or a leisurely luncheon with friends and family. Upstairs you’ll find the new Hop & Vine Bar and

30

restaurant, serving stylish asian-inspired, tapas style sharing plates and boutique beers, as well offering diners a great location above the shopping street for a bit of people watching. The village also offers some tantalising shopping opportunities for high-end fashion and fabulous shoes. And, when you need a break from your retail therapy, just a short step from the avenue, you can meander along the boardwalk on Noosa Main Beach, while enjoying an ice-cream from one of the gelato parlours and taking in the bright blue ocean vista, before deciding on the perfect luncheon venue. If you are so inclined, you can also continue on this path to Noosa National Park. Along the way you can peruse the pristine waters of Laguna Bay for playful dolphins and passing whales; spot a koala in the towering eucalyptus trees, or run into a goanna calmly circumnavigating the picnic area at The National Park. There are several popular bays and surfing spots around here, and the local surfers will be happy to point out the best spots. There are also several easy and difficult walking paths for a short stroll or dedicated work-out, perhaps even a longer hike. as the night falls you’ll find and eclectic mix of fine restaurants, live music venues, nightclub and bars - all within easy walking distance from your accommodation.

W

ith Thunder Road trike tours, you can enjoy the exhilaration of open-air cruising, with the peace of mind knowing you’ll get to your destination in one piece. Thunder Road trike tours is Noosa’s only open air tourism, on board a hand-built German performance machine, with the inrush of a Porsche but the feel of a motorcycle. Not to mention the 360 degree panoramic view, no visibility issues and full comfort and support.

“The romance is in the intake of forest aromas or seaside ocean spray as you sit 1 metre off the road; a Brewery cruise to Cooran hinterland or mountain escapes after a Cuban coffee - to the Maleny heights,” says owner Greg Dickinson. “Experience this ride and the buzz factor will stay on long after the tour, with people saying it is the ‘ultimate experience short of jumping out of a plane’… but it’s a much safer mode of adrenalin fix. “A once in a lifetime ride for those who have never had the opportunity to see this kind of machine in Australia.”

Take a ride on the wild side – without taking any risks!

Greg Dickinson and happy tourists take in the sights at Noosaville

Guests are collected from a designated point in Noosa, where they’ll receive clean helmets, sun screen and wind proof jackets. There’s also a full Bluetooth sound system - so you can select your favourite tunes before you head out on the highway. “Our main demographic has been women 35-90 years of age and men over 40, who wish to have the ultimate motorcycle style experience but with sheepskin seat comfort and the ultimate in German safety. “They’re drawn to the sense of freedom, speed and custom style of the machine with its black and chrome finish. “A one-off creation and unique way to experience the beauty of the Sunshine Coast without the imposition of a bus style mode of transport. The business was the brainchild of Greg’s wife Lyn, the perfect way to incorporate his passion for motorcycles and earn some money following his departure from a 35-year career in the electrical trades industry. “I have owned over 50 motorcycles from 1929 to current day, exported motor cycles and imported cars to the USA over the years, so a passion has flowed for unique flavours of vehicle - and the more unique and radical the concept - the greater the appreciation level for good engineering remains. “The feel of wind in your face , the scents of nature and the non-confinement of windows and steel body provide a freedom second to none. As for Thunder Road Trike tours, Greg says it’s better therapy than any trip to a doctor. “It will leave you in a transcendental state for hours after the trip.” Our apologies to Greg for the incorrect surname in our printed edition... it should have read - Greg Dickinson

An art world revolutionary Ar tist - Peter Phillips 34

NoosaStyleLiving

peterphillips

Words: KAYLENE MURRAY One cannot call themself a lover of ar t without having a working knowledge of the beginnings of the pop ar t culture in England and one of the major protagonists Peter Phillips, who was a ‘leader of the pack ’ in the 60s.

D

escribed as one of the pre-eminent British Pop Artists of our time (although truth be told, it’s not his favourite tag), Phillips studied at the Royal College of Art in London during the early 1960s - alongside fellow classmates David Hockney, Brett Whiteley, Allen Jones, R.B. Kitaj and Peter Blake. He was awarded the Harkness Fellowship, and moved to New York where he exhibited his work alongside his American counterparts - Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. Phillips work is proudly hung in dozens of

museums and galleries around the world. Phillips resided in the U.S.A and Europe for a number of years, with his famous Vogue cover model wife Marion-Claude, and young daughter Zoe Lana - before taking up residence in Mallorca, Spain for the next twenty years, happily painting and rescuing animals (large and small) in need of attention and love. It would be nothing to for family to be out driving - and end up back home with a dog, donkey or some other injured animal in tow. The beautiful Mercedes that was once a symbol

35

NS As with most living treasures of the art world, he continues to produce influential bodies of work

of status for the artist, was now an ambulance or livestock carrier! The main reason for Phillips relocating to Australia was family his daughter Zoe and her husband Read had relocated to Sydney five years earlier, and in that time had a daughter, Arja. So Phillips was a regular visitor. Sponsored by the National Gallery in Canberra, and in recognition of his internationally -recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in the arts, the Australian Government granted Peter a Distinguished Talent Visa, allowing him to live permanently in Australia. Phillips said that he loves living in Australia, where he first visited in the 80s and drove to the Daintree. Unfortunately the snakes hanging in trees up there didn’t make for great ‘bed fellows’ - so he rethought Tropical North Queensland. He did however take to painting them for a while to see if it would desensitize him of his fear - but no it didn’t. The decision to move to the Sunshine Coast was an easy one - the climate and landscape is very reminiscent of Mallorca said Zoe. 36

NoosaStyleLiving

And, when the artist found a large, sweeping acreage property in the lush countryside behind Noosa, their new home was secured. Peter has renovated an industrial barn on the property to create a large-scale studio and gallery to house his private collection. The new permanent collection encompasses six decades of work, spanning large-scale paintings to mixed-media collages - to lithographic prints and sculptures, and will be a must-see destination for art-lovers in the Asia Pacific region. Phillips will inaugurate his newly-constructed studio gallery with two special events, as part of this year’s Noosa Food and Wine Festival in May. The events will also coincide with his 80th birthday in a weekend of exclusive food, art and music. The events will present an exclusive first-look at the retrospective exhibition and a short documentary on his life with interviews by the band ‘The Cars’, artists Allen Jones, Peter Blake, Derek Boschier - and renowned art historian Marco Livingstone. As with most living treasures of the art world, he continues to produce influential bodies of work, that are now also inspired by the tropical landscape that surrounds him. Phillip’s work along with that of his contemporaries has endured through the decades - and now has found a new home on the Sunshine Coast. This is an enduring story that is far from over. The 90s is the New BLACK...

They’re back!! Suits for the girls... in bold solid colours.

s...

Think yellow, blue, red, green... the brighter the better. Or, if you’re a little more reserved...choose a grey or black suit - and then add a bright jewel colour under shirt or trendy tee. What’s good for the girls is just as on trend for the boys!! The SLIP Dress is also back with a vengeance any length - any fabric - but think ‘old-style’ glamour for the evening, by choosing a slinky fabric. Oh No!! The Bumbag is back in fashion too - of course, it’s being re-imagined as a Belt Bag - and now it’s adding definition to your dresses and pants, when worn as a stylish belt. There’s also another over the shoulder version, worn like a cross-body bag. Great unless you’re well-endowed - then there are issues. Sneakers have never actually gone out of style with the XY and Millennium geners - but new sculptured soles are making them a big hit when matched with soft, floaty dresses this season. Watch out for fabric Scrunchies - they’re back in fashion too, along with elaborate hair-clips and over-the-top earrings.Let your inner-nineties demons loose this season!! Right: French favourites... Festival Style Sessions perfecting the art of dressing

By: Kristin Todd Published by: New Holland RRP $32.99 With women in the age of social media desperately trying to keep up with the digitally-edited images all around them, Kristin Todd found herself upset, that in her work as a personal stylist, she found so many of her clients started their

day feeling negative about themselves. In this book, Kristin aims to change the way women feel about themselves, by making style advice accessible to everyone. Packed with insider tips, her approach to dressing is fresh and led by taste and inspirational, rather than rules. Kristin sets out to show women that being stylish isn’t about wearing the latest looks from the runway, it’s about building a wardrobe that’s an extension of our personal taste, body and lifestyle.

vent curator, Wendy Roe said that festival organisers and judges are looking forward to seeing how artist’s imaginations translate into this year’s creations. “This event has received overwhelming support from the creative community - and this year, we have a much larger event with entries sought from across the nation,” Ms Roe said. “The festival provides a platform in Australia for artists and designers to embrace their creative exploration into form, structure, texture, and colour - using an eclectic mix of often unusual materials. The Australian Wearable Art Festival will have four main categories as part of its gala parade competition this year – Avant Garde, Floriana, Trashion and Sustainable – as well as additional prizes for Haute-Couture, Headpiece, First Nation - and best tertiary and secondary student pieces. “It’s where Gaultier meets Picasso and everything in-between.” she said Award-winning artist Dr Jandamarra Cadd will join special guest judges Peter Dwyer of the Whitehouse Design Institute and Cindy Vogels, milliner and designer to the stars, on the judging panel. Dr Cadd said he is excited to see the artists and designers’ visions come to life, using a variety of materials and techniques. “Whether it’s through our hands, with our bodies, with our words or what we wear, I believe it is an integral part of our sense of well-being and individuality, to express ourselves creatively.” Dr Cadd said. Finalists’ wearable pieces of art will be presented on the catwalk in Eumundi under the stars on Friday 24th May, 2019. To find out more visit www.australianwearableart.com.au

Noosa family navigate peaks and troughs of Papua New Guinea life... As gunshots rang out at one of Port Moresby’s most notorious intersections, Rebekah Finzel and Ben Jackson sank low into their car seats and tried their best to remain inconspicuous.

PHOTOS: BEN JACKSON

W

e were looking for a way out,” Ben said, “but the traffic was so bad we just had to sit there and wait.” “People didn’t scatter like you’d expect after gunfire, instead more and more gathered – they just wanted to see what was going on. “Then suddenly the excitement died down, the traffic cleared and everyone went back to business as usual… we didn’t drive down that road for a while.” In 2016 Ben and Rebekah moved from Sunshine Beach to Port Moresby with their daughter Leilani after Ben took up a contract to work on Australia’s aid program in Papua New Guinea. They knew it was going to be an eye-opening experience. The city is often cited as one of the world’s least liveable but, despite being in a place with an unfortunate and unenviable reputation for crime, the family tries to live a normal existence. “Some of our life is pretty standard,” Ben said, “school for Leilani and work for me and Rebekah teaches yoga several days a week. “The fears about safety are real, but the truth is that, as expatriates, we are far less exposed to danger than local people because we live in secure compounds. “But there are serious restrictions on freedom of movement – we can’t just go for a stroll on the street. “There’s a local saying that ‘Port Moresby is not Papua New Guinea and Papua New Guinea is not Port Moresby’. “There’s a lot of truth to that – so we make a conscious effort to get out the city and experience different parts of the country,” Ben said. One of the family’s favourite escapes is to drive well out of the city for some surfing down the coast in Papua New Guinea’s Central Province. The consistent swell that pumps through the Pacific from November to April is ideal for surfers, who are known for their willingness to travel to avoid crowds and notoriously vague when it comes to divulging information about locations. “Nothing compares to Sunshine Beach, but there are some spots not far from Moresby,” Ben said. “A two-hour drive and the city is a distant memory. The surf is good, but not as enticing as the best – which is in the island province of New Ireland. “There are incredible places only accessible by boat – really world class– nothing but waves, fishing and relaxation.”

“The singing, the dress and the movement is so sacred and powerful – it’s sensory overload. There are good reasons why the nation of over eight million people has been touted as having great potential for tourism. PNG has all the ingredients for an idyllic tropical beach getaway and much more. By landmass PNG is by far the largest Pacific island nation and its mountainous inland regions offer stunning contrasts to the island-life archetype. The highlands have a cooler climate and offer splendid opportunities for trekking, mountain climbing and just getting into the wild. The Kokoda track is the most famous option, but last year Rebekah was part of an all-women group who scaled Mount Wilhelm, the highest peak in Oceania, which is a more scenic and less well-trodden route. “I’ve trekked in Australia, Peru, New Zealand and Canada, but Wilhelm was completely different,” she said. “The place and the people – it’s rugged – they’re part of the mountain.

“I think there was disbelief that seven foreign women would do it. There was a rush of excitement – people from the surrounding villages came to see us off.” In addition to its natural diversity, PNG has hundreds of ancient cultures that most local people are keen to share with visitors. The country’s dramatic geography and relatively late entry into the globalised world has meant that more than 800 distinct language groups are still active today, each with unique traditions, customary dress, dances and handmade artefacts. Cultural shows held throughout the country provide incentives for traditions to be kept alive. Rebekah also said tourists are privileged to be immersed in the spirituality of these practices. “The Mount Hagen Cultural Show was surreal,” she said, “it felt like walking in to a National Geographic documentary.” “The singing, the dress and the movement is so sacred and powerful – it’s sensory overload.

“There are so many different cultures that are together in one place. It’s an intense experience to be part of an expression they’ve held for thousands of years.” Back in Port Moresby, Leilani has started school where, in addition to literacy and numeracy, prep kids take a weekly local language and culture class. They also celebrate Papua New Guinea’s Independence Day each year when they put on local dress and perform traditional songs. “Papua New Guineans embrace Australian expatriates as members of their family – like cousins who have come to visit for summer holidays,” Ben said. “One of our local friends was delighted when I asked to borrow their customary outfits for Leilani for the Independence celebrations. “It wasn’t just about sharing clothing – it was their family sharing their culture with our family. “To us that’s the real Papua New Guinea.”

COOROY Country Post Office

Once a sleepy little township, now Cooroy is a hub of activity for those seeking an alternative lifestyle to the bustle of Noosa. This family-friendly, hinterland township boasts an impressive list of dining, cultural, heritage and natural experiences for everyone.

J

ust like all small townships in the hinterland, the ‘local’ hotel usually takes pride of place. A meeting place for locals to grab a drink, talk about their day, and get together with friends and relatives in a convivial location. And, just so, the Cooroy Hotel sits in the middle of the town, on Maple Street - the beating heart of the town originally called Coorooey (an indigenous name derived from the language of the Gubbi Gubbi

people), and meaning Possum taken from Mount Cooroy. It’s not everyday that you can visit a town named after a possum! This historic township, sits where once the land was covered in thick rainforest and magnificent stands of tall timber, before the arrival of Europeans, and has a rich history in the timber industry, The town has strived to maintain a number of its heritage buildings and sites, which make it an ideal day or weekend drive destination.

I love long country drives on the weekend, but those in the know also make the time to visit during the week, when it is usually a little bit quieter. As Cooroy has an impressive array of cafés, restaurants... who doesn’t love a perfect French pastry and who doesn’t love the perfect High Tea? Well you won’t have to look too far to find the perfect location for both. The lushly festooned Maison de Provence is tucked away in quiet Garnet Street in Cooroy - and has been delighting guests

with their tempting tastes for quite some time. And, if you decide to linger longer…there are many B&Bs in the area waiting to welcome you, and evening dining is so romantic in a country setting. Shopping in the cute boutiques around town is a pleasure, there’s so much to choose from - many would be just as at home in Hastings Street. You can find beautiful shoes and accessories at Cooroy Shoes and Accessories. High-end leather goods with ladies, kids and mens attire are available at Cooroy Country Mens Wear & Jeanery (don’t worry women are catered for as well)., where owner Kerry Martin has years of experience and anecdotes to share with customers. Creativity abounds in the quiet township, which supports the Mill Place Precinct (Lower Mill site); a creative learning precinct in the heart of town, which includes the Cooroy Library, the Ceramics Workshop, the Cooroora Woodworkers, a group of over 100 woodworking devotees; and Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Initiative, a liaison between several workers who formed their group after the Cooroy Timber mill closed over 10 years ago; and of course, the highly respected, Butter Factory Arts Centre, sitting in the original Cooroy Butter Factory which was built in 1930.

For Gals & Guys Thomas Cook, Hard Slog, Pure Western, Froggers, Wrangler and Twisted X Boots.

Now a full time gallery, and workspace for art classes, workshops and exhibitions. The perfect place to nurture the community’s cultural and creative vibe. Lake MacDonald sits in an idyllic rural setting just minutes away from the township, and is home to a wide range of wildlife. If you’re in to fishing, then this is the place to test your skills with the chance to catch, Bass, Saratoga and Perch - you might even find an iconic Mary River Cod, but be sure to place them back in the water afterwards, for the next fisherman to try their hand. You’ll often find bird watchers by the lake, and energetic canoe paddlers gliding by. The Noosa Botanic Gardens also share the same precinct, sitting on the foreshore of Lake MacDonald and offering nature lovers and opportunity to wander through a cornucopia of trees and plants, with over eight hectares of native and exotic plant species, and over 94 species of birds to see. Beautiful water views over the lake make this site the perfect location for a leisurely stroll or family picnic, with tables and shelters available throughout the gardens, graded pathways and restrooms (incl disabled access) and bench seats positioned throughout the area, offering visitors a place to sit quietly and reflect. Each year the gardens play host to musical recitals in the Greek-style amphitheatre, and weddings in the open-air bush chapel. A perfect day out for you and your family. So be sure to drive the short 40 minutes from Noosa and check out this little village of dreams in the near future. I think Santa has Cooroy on his ‘must visit list’.

Men’s Health...

cottonworx menswear 100% cotton & linen - shirts & pants locally designed - casual & timeless - classic cuts + a unique range of bags, belts & watches, jewellery & accessories

Not just for the hippies, a man’s guide to 70’s health in 2019

R

emember the age of Woodstock and John Lennon, when tie-dye was cool? The 70’s, when no dinner party was complete without deviled eggs and salmon mousse. The long hair bell bottom brigade may have had questionable taste in food and style, but some of their lifestyle choices were pretty savvy. These healthy trends are creeping back into our modern, iPhone obsessed lifestyles and I promise, it’s a good thing! In 2019 we are fanatical multi-taskers, packing so much into the day (emailing on the toilet - admit it, you’ve done it!). It’s no surprise that many of us feel overwhelmed by our hectic lifestyles. Transcendental Meditation was popular in the ’70s, and meditation in varying forms is on trend now. Meditation is a great way to de-stress, clear your mind, process thoughts and combat anxiety. Take 15 to 20 minutes out of your day to switch off. Turn off the phone, be still, no screens, no nothing, just ‘be,’ and you’ll reap the benefits. The ocean has long been regarded for its ancient healing properties. Alpha Males, may balk at Salt floatation tanks, but you don’t need to visit the Day Spa. Noosa has some of the best beaches in the world, so try Salt Water Therapy in our pristine oceans. Join your surf club or go for a swim. Seawater has a host of benefits for physical health and mental wellbeing (but please swim between the flags). Next time you tuck into smashed avocado, know it’s 70’s origins were avocado and alfa sprouts on soy bread, as are Grain Bowls, Tofu and plant-based diets. So as negative press builds on celebrity fad diets, more people are turning to the plant-based foods favoured by the summer of love generation. Well-balanced, well-proportioned, basic meals cooked from scratch are far healthier and easier to maintain than fasting and faddy trends. Think hipster craft brewers invented Kombucha? It has actually been around for centuries. In the 70’s homebrew Kombucha was all the rage, for its antioxidants and probiotics for good gut health. The fermentation process uses up sugars, but be wary and check the nutritional label of some of the more sweetened flavoured versions available. Seeking higher consciousness, flower children turned to Yoga. The trend took off, and unitard wearing yogis graced TV fitness segments across the world. The benefits of Yoga’s are countless, building strength, flexibility, improving posture, lowering blood pressure and cortisol levels; hence it’s rising popularity again. There are so many yoga practices to choose from Bikram, Ashtanga and even Goat Yoga (I ‘kid’ you not!), so you’re sure to find the pose to suit. So as the hippies turn into the hipsters of the i-Generation, we can see that those 70’s beatniks were on to something. So why not give hippy health a try! W

ith its towering Norfolk Pines nestled along the shoreline park, and the many wonders of nature in the surrounding National Parks and pristine beach, that form the worldrecognised Noosa Biosphere, it is now wonder that Peregian Beach is so popular. Just over the sandhills at the southern end of the beach you’ll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of Wallum Heath, which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in Spring. On the western side is Lake Weyba National Park and Lake Weyba which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. The area is rich with native wildlife and flora. Its friendly village atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle, makes Peregian Beach a favourite destination for savvy locals and clever tourists, who are seeking a quiet shopping experience away from the bustle of Noosa Heads. Peregian Beach offers visitors an excellent selection of casual and trendy restaurants, bars, cafés and take-aways dotted all around the central, village square - all inter-connected by quaint lanes and pathways. ho doesn’t love a perfect French pastry - and who doesn’t love the perfect High Tea? Well you won’t have to look too far to find the perfect location for both. The lushly festooned Maison de Provence is tucked away in quiet Garnet Street in Cooroy - and has been delighting guests with their tempting tastes for quite some time. Their expansive covered verandah area offers diners a comfortable space with good breezes, where they can come for a café style breakfast that could include a new take on Eggs Benedict presented in a buttery croissant, or a freshly prepared waffle dripping in fresh berries; or perhaps you’d prefer a Provence-inspired luncheon like Croque Monsieur or Paté with cornichons and baguette. It’s also the perfect place to catch up with friends for a good coffee accompanied by an assortment of mouthwatering cakes and light-as-afeather pastries. Of course, I could never go past spending the afternoon delving into the delights of a perfect High Tea. But I am only human after all. Bookings are advised.

Kulfi Cardamom Iceblock Region: Pakistan | makes 10 - 12 if using shot glasses | Prep time 20 mins + overnight chilling Cooking: 15 mins | Difficulty - Easy The subcontinent’s favourite ice cream, kulfi is cleansing, cooling and invigorating. It is flavoured with beautiful spices from its Persian origins, and can also contain fruit such as mango or banana. When it is very hot and you need to cool down, the energy hit from this frozen dessert will get you moving again. 6 green cardamom pods 500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) milk 500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) thick (double) cream 300 g (10½ oz/1 scant cup) condensed milk 50 g (1¾ oz) blanched almonds, ground 50 g (1¾ oz) pistachios, ground 1 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 teaspoon rosewater 50 g (1¾ oz/⅓ cup) roasted crushed pistachios, to garnish Remove the cardamom seeds from their pods. Using a mortar and pestle, crush the seeds until they resemble freshly cracked black pepper. Set aside.Place a heavy-based saucepan over medium heat. Add the milk, cream and crushed cardamom seeds. Bring to the boil, then add the condensed milk, stirring constantly. Add the almonds, pistachios and ground cardamom.Once the mixture returns to the boil, reduce the heat to low. Cook gently, stirring every 5 minutes or so, for about 10 minutes, or until the mixture has reduced by half. A skin will form on top; just keep stirring it in.Remove from the heat and stir in the rosewater. Allow to cool for 15–20 minutes. Slowly pour the mixture into iceblock (popsicle/ice lolly) moulds or shot glasses, then place in the freezer. After about 30 minutes, when the kulfi is starting to set, place popsicle or ice cream sticks in each mould or glass. Return to the freezer and freeze overnight, or for at least 8 hours; the kulfi will also keep for a few days, if making ahead. To un-mould the kulfi, quickly dip each mould or glass in warm water to loosen them, then turn out onto a small plate. Sprinkle with the roasted crushed pistachios and serve.

And now, with an influx of new dining establishments gracing this eclectic area - there is even more choice for regular and new diners.

Salmon Paté Serves 4 as an entrée Ingredients 125 ml (4 fl oz/½ cup) melted duck fat, or extra virgin olive oil 400 g (14 oz) salmon scraps (belly, tails, etc.), skin removed, pin-boned (see note) 2 thyme sprigs 1 garlic clove, peeled and finely chopped pinch each of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ lemon

sliced baguette, to serve cornichons, to serve capers, to serve

Method: Heat the duck fat in a small, deep frying pan over medium heat to 69°C (156°F), measuring the temperature using a thermometer. Add the salmon scraps, thyme sprigs and garlic to the warm fat. Remove the pan from the heat, cover tightly with foil and leave to cool to room temperature. Once cooled completely, remove the salmon from the fat and transfer to a bowl. Using two forks, break the salmon apart, adding a little of the duck fat, as necessary, to keep the fish moist. Add the salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice to taste. Serve the pâté with plain or toasted sliced baguette, cornichons and capers. notes: Salmon pâté also makes a delicious canapé for a dinner party or cocktail soirée. This dish is a clever way to use left-over scraps of salmon. It can also be made with salmon fillet, cut into thin strips, or a mixture of fillet and other pieces.

Farmgate to Plate OUR FANTASTIC PRODUCERS

Words & photos by Petra Hughes

Saturday afternoon bruschetta with a glass of wine...

I

t is always a great way to punctuate the day. Add to it the smooth creamy fetta made by Little White Goat Cheese, and the day suddenly becomes underscored and bolded! The only dilemma will be which fetta do I use – shall I go with traditional goat fetta, or shall I be daring and try the super smooth buffalo fetta, or maybe even the camel milk fetta? Who would have thought there was such an array – and who would have thought that they are all produced by the one cheesemaker here on the Sunshine Coast! Little White Goat Cheese is based just out of Wamuran on a property that has farmed bananas for generations. In a move to diversify, Karen Lindsay, goat mum and cheesemaker extraordinaire, has forged a niche in the cheese industry that has caused quite a stir. I adore meeting the producers that take a more ethical approach to farming. Their love and passion for what they do and the animals that they have taken charge of, is a joy to experience. The goat’s are very much part of the family; all have names, and Karen knows them all. There is a running dialogue with each and every one as they make their way to the dairy for their morning ritual. Karen only milks in the morning. She prefers to allow the mothers to nurture their young (rather than separating them as many dairies do), to ensure that they are rested to produce enough milk to suckle their young. Happy goats = happy milk production. Herding them into the dairy is a breeze. The tribe comes running when they see Karen, and the promise of a treat while they are being milked, provides the ultimate lure. They just wander in to their milking positions without any real effort and they are almost reluctant to leave! There is something in the DNA of a goat that makes them much more boisterous and mischievous than any other of the farmyard animals, so it is quite a treat watching the way the goats interact with Karen, and any strangers that might be near by. They are loving, curious creatures and they love cuddles! Karen primarily focuses on goat cheese, but her stable of cheeses has grown to include both buffalo milk fetta, using the milk from Thompson’s Buffalo Farm, as well as camel milk fetta, using camel milk from QCamel Dairy, both on the Sunshine Coast. The cheeses are sensational, and I look forward to seeing a lot more of Little White Goat Cheese. For more information visit: www.littlewhitegoatcheese.com.au

e t a g m ar F la te to P While I am singing the praises of the ethical farmers, I might also draw your attention to Piggy in the Middle, producers of free range pastured pork, lamb, chicken and eggs. Generational farmers (and cousins), Dean and Mason Mayne, along with their wives, Kate and Krystal, made Kilkivan their home five years ago with the view to establish a mixed farming enterprise.

C

ombined, they now ethically farm 260 acres, comprising of some 100 heritage breed pigs and 250 dorper sheep for meat, and over 400 chickens for both meat and eggs. Taking a more holistic approach, they utilise rotational farming practices to regenerate the land. Both chickens and pigs are free range and pastured raised, meaning they are not confined in any way and are free to roam and forage wide-open fields without restriction. It’s a cycle of grazing, and foraging. The land is naturally aerated and fertilised by the roaming stock, with their more natural approach alleviating the need for antibiotics and pesticides to keep the stock healthy. Their dorper sheep self-shed their fleece, removing the need to shear, making them a low maintenance, sturdy breed suited to the climatic conditions while ensuring premium meat production. They graze happily alongside the companion maremma dogs that keep a stealthy guard over them. Dean’s background in butchery, gave Piggy

in the Middle a good foundation for what they wanted to achieve in the way of meat production from their pigs – good healthy pigs that foraged naturally, their feed supplemented only with grain. No growth hormones, no antibiotics, no chemical interference. Just good natural farming, which in-turn, produces quality meat with an exceptional flavour. In an effort to become more self sufficient Piggy in the Middle did a successful crowd fund and built a farm butcher house so that they could process their meat on-site, allowing them even more control over the processing of their meat. This also allowed them the opportunity to create some yummy new products, like their shacon – a lamb bacon, bacon salt, pork and chicken bone broths, bacon butter, chicken liver pâté and delicious gluten and preservative free sausages. Just visit when they are smoking their bacon in the in-house wood smoker and enjoy the amazing aroma that wafts through the air. While you can purchase individual cuts, they also offer a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) delivery service, so you can get a nice mix of mixed meat cuts to suit your budget, or you can visit them at the Noosa Farmers Market. Meanwhile, I might just add a little bacon salt to that bruschetta I was talking about earlier!

NS Bringing new tastes & flavours.. He grew up in the UK, lived in France, cruised the world’s oceans, cooked for millionaires and performed on reality TV, but for Leon Walker, the future lies on the Sunshine Coast at The Secret Garden café in Noosaville.

I

discovered the love of cooking with my father in the UK when he used to cook Caribbean food for private events, and I pottered around trying to help him,” says Walker. “In my teens I developed the love of cooking and realised it could take me places around the world, and that is when I decided to make a career out of it.” And take him around the world it did. Having started his career in the north-east of England, he was soon offered an opportunity to work on the Queen Elizabeth II. “Working on the QE2 was probably one of the most exciting things I had done in my life. “As an apprentice chef it was mindboggling - the size of the ship, the size of the kitchens, the size of everything. “On my first transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York it was horrifying - the weather, the size of the waves, five-day crossing and three of those days I was sick. “But it was character building. After the first crossing I got my sea legs and life become better. “It opened the world to me. I spent three months visiting over 52 different countries and cooking at the same time - what more could an 18-year-old asked for.” Over the years, his career went from strength to strength and saw him work in some of the best restaurants, with amazing chefs, such as Marco Pierre White. He also travelled to France, where he lived in the country’s south before working in the French Alps. But it was while living

in Sydney, that Walker received the call that would change his life again. “I got a phone call out the blue from an agent in LA asking me if I was interested on a boat in the Bahamas for nine weeks chartering.” He said yes, but little did he know, he Chef Leon Walker was agreeing to star in the reality show Below Deck. “Unfortunately, the chief steward and I did not get along and reality TV always creates drama and unfortunately I was the centre of the drama.” But a bit of unfortunate editing didn’t stop Walker from going on to work on one of the biggest mega yachts in the world. “I have worked on some of the most prestigious private yachts in the world and have got to cook for some of amazing celebrities, so there is always a silver lining in the cloud.” Eventually, he decided to become a consultant for a close friend at the Secret Garden Cafe in Noosaville as well as consulting as a Private Chef for private functions in Noosa. “The type of food is healthy, light and fresh Spanish/ European mix, with affordable prices. “The future is to live on the Sunshine Coast, create some amazing businesses and keep locals at the forefront.”

New Chief Judge takes royal wine show throne... Australia’s first capital city wine show of the season has welcomed a new Chief Judge, with experienced winemaker Jim Chatto taking over the reins replacing David Bicknell after three years.

Mr Puglisi was instrumental in establishing a modern wine industry in Queensland beginning in the 1960s, when he planted recognised wine grape varieties at his family-owned Ballandean Estate Wines in the Granite Belt. Previously, wine in Queensland had largely been made from table grapes. The winner of the Angelo Puglisi Grand Champion Wine of Show will also be awarded a $12,000 RNA fellowship to be used for travel, training and education to further their winemaking skills. Entries must be in by Friday 3rd May, with judging taking place from Monday 1 July and the winners to be announced at an awards presentation on 12th July, prior to Grape Grazing. To enter go to www.rqfws.com.au

M

r Chatto owns Isle Vineyard in Tasmania’s Huon Valley and has more than 25 years winemaking and 20 years experience as a wine judge, holding chair of judges’ roles at other capital city and regional wine shows. “We are continually evolving the show, so the results have real relevance to both producers and wine lovers. “We’ve assembled a great team of judges this year - from all walks of wine life, including winemakers, sommeliers, restaurateurs, retailers and educators. “This casts a broad net towards finding, and celebrating, the very best of Australian wine.” says Chatto. The RQWS is also celebrating one of the industry’s finest, naming its prestigious Grand Champion Wine of Show trophy after Angelo Puglisi - known as ‘the father of the Queensland wine industry.’

The area is a photographers paradise, as every turn boasts glorious views out over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, large expanses of lush farmland and glimpses of cattle and goats grazing there happily. Kenilworth BURSTING WITH LIFE!

There is nothing better than setting out on the Noosa Eumundi Road early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, intent on making the most of your country drive experience.

I

t’s always a good idea to pack an overnight bag when you venture out along the country road to Kenilworth, with thoughts of generous serves of country food swimming around your mind; and dreams of shopping in the cute township - and perhaps deciding to stay overnight and do the same thing all over again the next day.

There’s so much to see and do in the town with its multifaceted array of cute boutiques, cafés, restaurants and bakeries, and of course, the country pub! And throughout the year the town plays host to some great events, a Kenilworth ArtsFest; Cheese, Wine and Food Fest; Sunshine Coast Ukulele Fiesta; Kenilworth Show and Rodeo, Campdraft; Quilt and Craft show and so much more. As I’ve wandered around the township talking to the locals, traders and visitors to the area, one thing has become apparent. The people who come to Kenilworth love the true country feel of a warm welcome, helpful and willing service - and the prospect of one-on-one communication, so lacking in big city shops and venues. It’s no wonder that homes and properties are highly sought-after in the region. Just ask Ron Jeffrey from Ron Jeffrey Realty to spell out all the positives with living in the area. He is an encyclopaedia of useful information and facts. The region is also a drawcard for those looking for a true country experience, with a good selection of B&B’s in the area, as well as natural wonderlands for campers to explore and enjoy. And, for those looking for a ‘farm to plate’ experience. On the edge of the shopping precinct, sits the iconic Kenilworth Dairy, Established in 1950, as one of the many rural chefs factories owned by the Kraft Corporation, until in the late 80s, when Kraft moved to centralisation and closed regional factories. And they did, renaming it to Kenilworth Country Foods, now Kenilworth Dairies. With an onsite café serving fresh lunches, morning and afternoon teas in the undercover entertaining area and surrounding gardens.

Four wheel drivers love the region, as do the ‘real’ motorbike riders who visit the area on a regular basis. Groups of baby boomers visit looking for the good old days - and XY geners looking for a retro break from the high tech world. For those looking for a bit of ‘back to nature’ here’s the small town of Imbil just up the road offering 4-wheel driving and camping facilities, that have become extremely popular with weekend trekkers and serious drivers. And, just 8 km from Kenilworth, you’ll also find the State Forest that harbours four perfect camping areas. No bookings are required just self registration. 16 km up the road, just below Lake Borumba, is the working Borumba Deer Park, offering a unique family enjoyment and relaxation experience - with friendly hosts. There are modern amenities and BBQ facilities for visitors.

In other words, you’ll be glad that I suggested packing that overnight bag, as there’s so much to see and do in and around Kenilworth.

Artist Profile SUNSHINE COAST ART TRAIL

Kim Wilson Many artists love to depict the landscape and often it is their own ‘back garden’. However, Kim Wilson ventures much further afield and has found inspiration from places as different as Kolyuchin Island (a small ex-meteorological station off the coast of Siberia) to Auckland Island (situated between New Zealand and Antarctica).

I

t may therefore, come as no surprise that as well as being an exceptional artist, Kim (alongside her husband) is an accomplished sailor and expeditioner. Her concerns for the environment and especially for wildlife, are from first hand experience and often depicted in her paintings which are incredibly detailed, captivating and thought-provoking. Kim paints in oils achieving her distinct finesse through patiently working in decreasingly finer brushes and even working back through paint with dental tools, to brilliant effect, no matter how large or small the canvas. For well over 2 years in their early married life, the couple circumnavigated the globe on a family yacht. They explored

Art on Cairncross ‘Nocturnal’ KIM WILSON April 6—28

‘Spectrum’ SARAH LARSEN May 4—26

PAUL CHING-BOR June 1—30 Artworks include paintings, ceramics, sculpture, glass, leather masks, steam punk and unique gifts.

“Swamp Wallaby II”, oil on board, 30 x 44 cm beyond most of our wildest dreams and while slightly constrained by the lack of space on board for a lot of painting, Kim sketched and photographed extensively. She recalls particularly the impact of the Cocos Keeling Islands. The initial beauty was overpowered when they reached the windward side and found the shoreline invaded by plastics, which she tried to clean up. “Some of these beaches, however, were too much for me. I had to accept that the plastic was going to stay there,” she says. So started a series of topographical paintings which detailed the natural pebbles and leaf litter, but included bright flotsam and jetsam plastics in the form of broken thongs and misshapen bottles. Strangely alluring pictures with a strong environmental message. And it was during these years, going ashore to tour areas of Africa on an artist’s shoestring budget, that her already deep love of wildlife was cemented. Truly wild, magnificent beasts in their natural habitats, but many greatly endangered. Recently, Kim was perusing motion-sensor captured photographs of animals. She explains “While recovering from shoulder surgery I became involved in a citizen science project, identifying animals from camera trap images. I love the candid nature of animals seen in darkness and low light; feral and native all caught, unawares, going about their lives, oblivious to us.” ‘Nocturnal’ then took shape as a new series of artworks reflecting these images and ideas, which highlighted the disproportion of feral creatures roaming our land. Each painting has that magical ‘moment in time’ quality. The foxes, deer, cats and hares are all quietly wandering, as much as the native wombats and wallabies. The viewer becomes the invader, snooping into their private lives and through the level of detail and the subtle conveyance of darkness through light, these become remarkable paintings. The exhibition shows clearly how all of Kim’s art is born of passion for her subjects and a hope to share her knowledge and experience, but it is her artistic skills which allow this. Especially with the luxury of studio space on dry land. There are many exhibitions to be enjoyed along the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail, so take a look on the website before you head out and you can plan as many ports of call to suit your own tastes. “Feather, Kolyuchin Inlet Spit” oil on board, 20 x 26 cm

A strong move is afoot within the Australian academic art world, to redress the overlooking of John Peter Russell, Australia’s only real link to mainstream European impressionism. To enhance our nation’s art world profile, Academia is now desperate for Russell to be re-found John Russell “The Artists Garden” Oil 52 x 63.5 cm and placed near the top in the pantheon of World Impressionists.

An ignored rather than lost Australian impressionist... JOHN PETER RUSSELL

S

imultaneously released over the Christmas period was a well-produced documentary by the ABC - mainly about Russell on Belle Isle en Mer, (still available on I view). And a far broader view of Russell’s life was taken with the A.G.N.S.W. in it’s great exhibition, the book-style catalogue is still available through their bookshop. After Russell’s death in 1930, his second wife Catherine De Witt Merrill returned to live with her family in Florida, taking with her much of his watercolour output from their years in the south of France. With little work produced in Sydney on his return to Australia, his artist cousin Thea Proctor, had little to show Academia of Russell’s work or connected life in France, that could build a justified international reputation. As is often the case, it was the commercial world out to make a dollar, not the Academics that came to the posthumous aid of Russell. In the early sixties Wildenstein’s London Bond Street operation landed a cache of Russell, and mounted an exhibition titled John Peter Russell - Australian Impressionist. In the seventies Ann Galbally followed-up her sixties gem on Arthur Streeton, with a great book on Russell. It wasn’t until Tony Cowden, a gallery dealer in Melbourne in the late sixties returned to Sydney from London in around 1975, that Russell’s profile jumped out and up. Tony worked in London with a top researcher Emma Hicks. Emma’s brief was to find Aussie expat artists for Tony to buy, foremost among these was Russell, and find them she did. All through the late seventies and eighties when you looked for Tony, often his partners reply was ‘’in London or France’’. Being a hunter gatherer, in the main - Tony marketed through the doyen of the Melbourne art world Joseph Brown. Jo had the contacts, high on the list was Sir Leon Trout, as chairman of trustees at the Q.A.G. and with a large personal collection, Sir Leon helped by letting the ball roll around the institutions. Russell started to up his colour tone in Italy in 1887. Earlier during the years studying at Atelier Cormon, being wealthy, Russell was able to weekend in the country meeting other painters at favoured spots along the rivers and coast. In this period he painted lower-key works like most of the impressionists. Those that were not going to be lucky enough to meet Claude Monet on Belle Isle in 1886. A meeting that changed Russell’s palette forever. I was lucky enough to be in London with Tony when he flew to Brittany to repatriate the oil of two of Russell’s sons on the beach with the model sailboats painted in 1904. The companion painting to the three sons and the crab held now at the Musee D’Orsay in Paris. Not everything Tony Cowden found came through Emma or France, once at his Woollahra home, when I was there to inspect the repatriated de Witt Merrill watercolours, Tony showed me the Regatta Rose Bay oil of 1922, illustrated on page 179 of the Sydney catalogue. Did that come back from Florida with the watercolours or from Sydney? I’m afraid I was never told... such is the Art World at the high end. Leigh Murphy

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower Noosa Regional Gallery 3 May to 16 June 2019 An affiliate exhibition of the Victorian based ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2019 festival CONTEXT The natural environment in Noosa is a defining aspect of its character and identity. The community works continuously to live sustainably within this lush landscape while visitors are drawn to the area to take in its sublime beauty. In 2007 the Noosa Shire was designated as the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. The Noosa Biosphere encompasses a total of 87,000 hectares of land and numerous waterways within the Noosa local government boundaries, and extends approx. 3 km seawards. The designation recognises the unique and special natural attributes of the region and sets out to ensure the natural ecosystems and biodiversity of the area are valued, cared for, improved and conserved. PROPOSED EXHIBITION The force that through the green fuse drives the flower is an ambitious exhibition project that sets out to re-create the abundant and biodiverse natural ecosystems of the Noosa region – inside Noosa Regional Gallery – while also exploring how humans interact with and coexist with this space. Taking its title from the Dylan Thomas poem, the exhibition sets out to consider and convey the interconnectedness of nature and humankind, the energy and force that flows through each and the cycle of life and destruction that makes it wondrous and sublime. The entirety of Noosa Regional Gallery’s exhibition spaces will be transformed into a visual, conceptual and immersive representation of the Biosphere ecology, articulating and underscoring the diversity, interconnectedness and beauty of the ecosystem while exploring the way we interact with, learn from and rely on this environment. It is envisaged that the exhibition will bring together approximately 20 artists from around the country. The exhibition design will make use of all surfaces across the galleries. It will be a densely and unconventionally installed exhibition that tightly juxtaposes differing and diverse artists, mediums and concepts to reflect the interwoven complexity of a coreliant system without a hierarchical centre. The force that through the green fuse drives the flower is an ambitious project and will be of significant scale for Noosa Regional Gallery. It is a project that has been selected an ‘affiliate exhibition of the Victorian based ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2019 festival.’

oald Dahl’s much-loved Fantastic Mr Fox will leap off the page and onto the QPAC Playhouse stage this autumn, in another thrilling production by the amazing, shake & stir theatre co.

The team behind award-winning, sold-out national tours of Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine and multi-Helpmann Award nominated Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts, as well as the recent runaway success, A Christmas Carol, kick off 2019 with a tall tale perfect for all ages to enjoy. Published in 1970, Dahl’s hilarious wit remains on full display in Fantastic Mr Fox, an action-thriller-suspense-comedy overflowing with cunning plans, explosions and chases, not to mention mischief, mayhem and humongous belly laughs. Mr Fox lives in the wood, under a hole, under a huge tree with Mrs Fox and their small Fox family. Every night, Mr Fox leaves the hole to steal food from three horrible farmers – Boggis, Bunce and Bean – one fat, one short, one lean. The three greedy farmers concoct a plan to catch Mr Fox, but no-one outfoxes a fox. When Mr Fox needs to save his family and friends, he’ll go to any length, above or underground, to outwit the mean humans. This Easter holidays, join Mr Fox and his team of furry friends as they bounce, burrow and bewilder their way to safety.

Canine and feline blood donors: Dr Naomi Hansen BVSc (Hons) MVS MACVSc Veterinary Director

We are all familiar with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and the integral role of blood and blood products in the field of human medicine, but have you ever thought what might happen if YOUR beloved canine or feline buddy needed a blood transfusion?

L

et me introduce you to the canine and feline blood donors of the AEC Noosa Civic, this select team of very special canines and felines are offering us their precious blood for that one time when your buddy may need it.

Thank you Finn, Colin, Harper, Eric and Fiona and their motto #savinglives

These pets are so important to our team and are responsible for saving the lives of many pets that find themselves in unfortunate situations. It is amazing what a difference a single donation can make to the life of a complete stranger and their family. The process of canine/feline blood donation is not dissimilar to that of a human with dogs donating approximately 450mL and cats donating approximately 60mL. To provide some perspective on these numbers, dogs have approximately 90mL blood/kg body weight and cats approximately 60mL blood/kg body weight. Our beloved canine blood donors must pass a rigorous screen program before they are accepted: They are all over 25kg lean body weight, blood typed (DEA 1.1 negative), up to date with all vaccinations and preventatives, heartworm test negative and have returned a perfectly normal blood test (assessing organ and haematological function).

94

NoosaStyleLiving

The most important criteria is that these pets all LOVE coming to visit their veterinarian Our feline donor team are in excess of 4kg body weight, blood typed (A or B) and have passed on their preliminary health check, blood testing and ‘LOVE their veterinarian’ check. These blood donor animals are a valuable part of the AEC Noosa team and we thank their exceptional owners for their support. Why would an animal need a blood transfusion? There are 22 human medical conditions that require or benefit from blood or blood products as part of the therapeutic regimen. The therapeutic spectrum in the veterinary world is no so broad but many of the indications for blood and blood products in our pets are more common than you may think: Rat bait ingestion: Rat bait interferes with the blood clotting process and can result in uncontrolled bleeding. Fresh whole blood contains valuable clotting factors that rapidly reverse this clotting dysfunction and ceases the life threatening bleeding. Trauma: Acute blood loss resulting from a motor vehicle accident or other traumatic incident can induce ‘shock’ in our pets that is best managed with replacement of the lost whole blood. Cancer: Cancer can result in internal bleeding requiring immediate whole blood replacement and sometimes surgery AEC Noosa Civic Shop ECO3a Noosa Civic Shopping Centre 28 Eenie Creek Road, Noosaville, P 07 5353 7005

Travel in Style HOLIDAY AT HOME IN QUEENSLAND

6 petfriendly holidays in the sunshine... words: Hannah Statham

with these 6 pet-friendly holidays.

1. Learn a new trick This old dog could always learn a new trick… and I am not talking about Oberon. I’ve always wanted to try stand-up paddle boarding but have been too scared to do it alone. At Enviro Reefs Paddle & Surf School, dogs and their owners can team up to master stand-up paddle boarding and surfing together. Lessons are available for people (and pooches) at select locations from the Sunshine Coast to Bundaberg. At the end of the lesson, pocket a Certificate of Completion to earn yourself bragging – and barking rights among your

legged friend at the Best Western Plus Quarterdecks Retreat in Hervey Bay. Their pet-friendly villas, set on five acres, make the perfect stomping ground to play fetch by the seaside. As well as being close to the whalewatching action, there’s plenty of fun and games for your pooch too, with an off-theleash beach just 60 metres from your door.

4. Paradise and paws Get more bang for your bark and explore the beauty of the Whitsundays with 28 acres of tropical heaven at Discovery Parks – Airlie Beach. Bali-inspired villa and cabin accommodation is the perfect kennel to rest your weary paws before discovering the 74 island wonders of the Whitsundays. While in town, check out Dog Friendly Whitsundays to help you and your fourlegged friend make the most of your escape. Combining four-legged friendly activities, pet care and services in the region, you’ll be able to create a totally ‘pawsome’ itinerary.

5. Free range in the hinterland

T

ake it from me, leaving a pet behind when you holiday can be traumatic. I have spent an entire holiday haunted by the memory of my dog’s sad brown eyes, quivery legs and dry nose as I left him behind and took off overseas. It didn’t seem fair that I was chowing down on pizza, pasta and gelati, while my other half – a wily old short-haired dachshund called Oberon – was being served Pal-for-one in a kennel here in Brisbane. In Europe I saw dogs as small as chihuahuas through to great danes shadowing their masters everywhere, which got me thinking about the pet-friendly holidays I could take with Oberon closer to home. So skip the kennel fees and the horrendous guilt of leaving your dog behind

friends. If you get addicted to life on a board then take off to Riverview Retreat in Burrum Heads. It offers the perfect combination of pet-friendly accommodation with stand-up paddle boards. Now no matter how many times I fall off, my best friend won’t judge.

2. Get a new leash on life Corks, cabins and canines – sign me up! Ocean View Estate, a cellar door and vineyard just 45 minutes from Brisbane, open their door to furry friends. The Winemakers Cottage can accommodate dogs and up to 12e of their closest humans. While your bundle of fur fossicks in the yard, you’ll have time to swill, sniff and sample a local drop.

3. Hounds in Hervey Bay Have a whale of a time with your four-

Your pampered pooch will have his tail wagging like mad when you escape to the Noosa Hinterland to explore Capriole Estate’s luxury homestead paw-in-paw with your special friend. Guests can choose from a range of accommodation, from a designer loft to a grand homestead overlooking Mount Eerwah on the Sunshine Coast. If you need a little bit of Noosa action, you’re only a 30-minute drive to Hastings St, where the pet-friendly (and aptly named) Doggy Beach is the perfect spot to put some sand between the paws.

6. Farmer wants a dog The postie bike is only thing Oberon regularly chases in his day-to-day routine so I am always happy to get him back to nature. I can see myself with a glass of local wine, relaxing on a cottage verandah and watching Oberon make new friends with the farm animals at Deshons Retreat in Kingaroy. Otherwise we could head north of Brisbane City to enjoy some R&R in this piece of pet paradise. Lagoon Pocket is a B&B farm stay, near Gympie and if your pooch likes the finer things in life (like sleeping inside), it’s no problem here. You’ll need to bring your own bedding and food for pooch but courtesy towels are provided to wipe paws down after running around like Lassie with the farm stay’s own friendly collie Danny.

Lizard Island Expeditions offer exclusive access to the

Great Barrier Reef...

Lizard Island has announced details and dates for its Reef Expedition experiences for 2019, offering guests access to normally unseen snorkelling areas around the island and exclusive areas of the Great Barrier Reef.

T

he four-night Reef Expedition program features a raft of extraordinary adventures of the World Heritage-listed reef, with the Lizard Island luxury lodge – along with allinclusive gourmet dining, fine wines and special extras – as a base. Guests are urged to dive right in to the action, with included guided snorkel trips around the inner reef, a full day’s snorkelling or diving in the outer reef and guided tours above and below the water with Lizard Island’s naturalist Beth Bull. A four-kilometre hike to Cook’s Look follows Captain Cook’s original trail and delivers panoramic views of the island and reef from the summit. With expedition numbers limited to just twelve guests, the experience of the reef on Expedition is a personal one. Lizard Island is the only resort located on the 1,013-hectare National Park, offering the rare privilege of simply stepping off the beach to snorkel, taking in the wonders of Giant Clam gardens and schools of tropical fish including Simon the resident Groper, manta rays, turtles and coral. A personal tour of Australian Museum Lizard Island Research Station is another highlight on the

itinerary. As a world-leading supplier of onreef facilities for coral reef research and education, the Research Station provides a fascinating insight into the reef and the challenges in its conservation. And, private sunset drinks with the station’s directors, Dr Anne Hoggart AM and Dr Lyle Vail AM offer a first-hand understanding of the research into the reef’s incredible ecology and a chance to get involved. Reef Society Founder Wendy Morris – a pioneer in reef-based ecotourism operations – said she was delighted to be leading the Reef Expedition again this year. “The Reef Expeditions always bring together a small group of like-minded people who are interested in the incredible beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and who are keen to conserve it,” Ms Morris said. Among the special touches as part of a Lizard Island stay are access to a private, motorised dinghy, use of clear view sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and snorkelling gear. A deluxe picnic hamper for private beach outings completes the picture. Rates on the Lizard Island Reef Expedition start at $2924* per room per night (based on twin

share), including expedition activities and events, equipment-use, all dining, all non-alcoholic and selected premium alcoholic beverages along with an in-suite bar and airport transfers. Flights are not included. New seasonal degustation menu at Bacchus... ready your palate for flavour

B

acchus Head Chef, Massimo Speroni welcomed 2019 with a huge burst of bang-on-trend flavour combinations. In addition to the acclaimed a la carte and degustation menus he curates at the award-winning restaurant, he recently delivered the first Seasonal Degustation - The Crudo, an eight-course dining experience of raw fish, crustaceans, meat and fruit. Chef Speroni reflected on his thoughts about The Crudo, “The idea comes from my hometown and the region where I am from in central Italy - during Summer the restaurants on the beach would serve a massive antipasto Crudo, and again for lunch and dinner. While Crudo has historically been associated with the serving of raw fish, the word actually means raw. The Crudo Degustation at Bacchus featured a menu of 8 courses of fish, crustaceans and meats, prepared with different flavours and techniques, featuring Australian products, with local fruits featuring in the finale dish.” The menu was sensational. So we can’t wait for the next one. Bacchus Restaurant , podium level, Rydges South Bank, Grey St., Brisbane www.bacchussouthbank.com.au NoosaStyleLiving

Property co-ownership with a mate.

Expert reveals “5 ways to avoid the ultimate breakup”

P

roperty prices and their general inaccessibility are ongoing issues for many Australians. As such, millennials are turning to alternative methods to gain their first step onto the property ladder. One emerging trend enabling their dream is property co-ownership with friends and family. In fact, 31% of Australians surveyed said that they would consider co-buying property with a friend or relative. Current flatmates or friends are the perfect partners for co-ownership and an ideal scenario for this latest development in property. By combining buying power, the parties involved can halve their deposit and mortgage repayments, or cut their deposit to 33% if they buy with two others. However, as with any big decision, it’s crucial to understand all the factors involved in co-ownership, as well as considering your co-buyers’ needs to ensure the relationship doesn’t go sour. David Dawson, CEO and Co-founder of Kohab, and expert on property co-ownership says, “Co-buying property with a friend is a smart idea in the current climate. Despite the close bond between friends, it’s important to have a legal co-ownership agreement drawn up to ensure the safety of both parties and avoid any major fallouts.”

Here David shares his tips for friends considering the co-ownership option: Know your expectations. It’s crucial to know each person’s role and responsibilities before entering into a co-ownership agreement. It’s key to always have your expectations outlined in a legal document to ensure that each party’s concerns are met in order to sidestep any disagreements that could arise. Have a co-ownership agreement in place. While it’s important to have trust, a co-ownership agreement exists so that you don’t need trust (per se). Too many co-ownership arrangements are based on trust alone and verbal agreement which is an avoidable risk. Keep you and you friends safe by having this legal document in place. Compromise. Doing anything with another person means that you may need to compromise at times. This may be on location, size or budget. Know what you want but make sure you accommodate your friend’s needs/wants also. This is a partnership after all. Make sure you have an exit plan. Circumstances change, and as such it’s crucial for both parties to be able to exit the agreement at any given time. By having this drawn up in your co-ownership agreement, you’ll have peace of mind that each party will be safe if the time comes for you to part ways. Do you due diligence. It’s imperative that you know where you stand at all times. Be involved in all bank meetings, loan conversations and legal agreements to ensure you are across everything throughout the co-ownership process. Kohab is a world first digital platform and market place for coownership. Kohab defines Co-Ownership into 3 categories; Co-living, Co-Investment and Co-Lifestyle. Kohab’s aim is to see more people ultimately owning their own property. Purchasing a property as tenants in common, splitting the title, obtaining the right co-ownership agreement, mortgage and insurances, co-ownership can get people into owning and out of renting. Apartment living is on the rise for Australian families, with the most recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ showing that families with children now make up an unprecedented 25% of the nation’s total apartment population.

TOP TIPS FOR A GREEN gain approvals if necessary,” adds Matt. “In most Australian areas, a green roof will require the lodgement of a development application.”

What to Plant “Just like you would if planning a backyard, think about the style you want your green roof to have, as well as your intended uses for it,” says Matt. “Considering these factors from the outset will help you plan and execute your rooftop haven much more effectively.”

A

partment living is on the rise for Australian families, with the most recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ showing that families with children now make up an unprecedented 25% of the nation’s total apartment population. But just because you live in an apartment without a backyard, it doesn’t mean you have to give up all of the advantages that come with a domestic garden space, says Matt. Maximise the land available and try to include a garden everywhere – even over structures, and create a green rooftop oasis to benefit not only health, lifestyle and property value, but the environment as well.

106

NoosaStyleLiving

Due Diligence “Before getting too deep into the process of planning your rooftop garden, it’s best to first tick off the basics,” says Matt. “That means engaging a structural engineer to check that the roof is properly intact and suitable for the type of rooftop space you’re planning to do.” “This is particularly important for large-scale installations, especially if you’re considering big planters and additional rooftop features, such as outdoor furnishings, outdoor kitchens and overhead structures, which can all be quite load-intensive on the roof,” he says. “Water and soil on their own are very weighty, so there may be only so much you can do.” “It’s also essential to check with your local Council to make sure your garden plans are compliant with state and local legislation and regulations, and to

Plants that flourish in containers are often best for growing in artificial spaces like rooftops. Succulents, grasses and coastal species such as Cassurina glauca and Carpobrotus are great groundcovers and spillover plants. Pennisetum, Lomandra and Poa look amazing as ornamental grasses, and will also work to soften the overall look of the space,” Matt adds. “Ball-shaped and architectural plants can also help lift a rooftop space. Some great low-maintenance options include succulents like Agave, Kalanchoe and Crassula. These varieties can also handle dry conditions, and have limited root-systems, so can survive in shallow soil.”

Consider Astroturf “And if you want to make it really fun, you might even consider installing a little putting green in the AstroTurf,” adds Matt.

ROOFTOP OASIS Rooftop features “Just like a ground level-garden, you’ll get much more use out of your green rooftop space if you introduce features to make it more comfortable and inviting,” says Matt. “You will need to consider the weight capacity of the roof as well as local building codes first, but there is a variety of outdoor features and design elements that can potentially be suitable for green roofs and enhance their overall appeal,” says Matt.

“These might come in the form of timber decking, paving or water features, through to dining tables, seating, outdoor kitchens and fire pits.” “Wind and sun protection are also important considerations,” says Matt. “Shade sails, retractable awnings, canopies and big market umbrellas can all be great options – and then you’ve got more permanent options like outdoor pavilions, pergolas and gazebos at the other end of the spectrum.”

Outdoors ENJOYING THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Summer 2018/19... Well that was tough… Hot, dry and unrelenting. While we can be grateful that we didn’t get the extreme heat our friends in the southern states suffered through, we didn’t get a single cool change either. Even when granted a token shower, which barely settled the dust, it didn’t bring the temperatures down. So when it turned out to be the hottest summer on record I don’t think anyone was surprised.

I

don’t know about your garden, but mine is now looking a little the worse for wear. However, all was not lost – I retreated under cover, focussing on my indoor pots and balcony planters which have thrived in the warmth, bright light and my dedicated, albeit sparing watering regime.

This summer - in the latest chapter of my rediscovery of the plants that remind me of my childhood – I fell in love with Begonias. I have faint memories of cane begonias standing elegant and tall at the back of my grandmother’s flower beds, shaded by the eves of her cottage, while her little porch had a collection of pots with delicate, pendulous flowers cascading over the edges. So when I was looking for something to brighten the pots around the house I thought I’d revive those memories. I started on the south east facing verandah by underplanting the pots of clumping betel nut palms with delicate, pink flowering Semperflorens seedlings. They rewarded me by quickly filling the space with succulent shiny green foliage and prolific pink blooms….until my chickens took a liking to their cool softness and proceeded to use them to lay on! Fortunately, with a little TLC they bounced back. Undeterred, next I chose a variety called ‘Dragon Wing Red’ and Wow! Long fleshy stems with alternating leaves terminating with multiple bunches of bright orange-red flowers. It quickly outgrew its place in our bedroom and had to be moved out to the balcony where it has flowered constantly ever since, so when I saw a white version of the Dragon Wing I added it to the collection. Next came the tall ‘cane’ begonias I recall from my grandmother’s garden which, with their narrow growth habit have perfectly filled an empty corner. Most recently, I’ve moved on to the Rex begonias, prized for their variegated and elaborately patterned leaves moreso than their flowers. Now that it is showing signs of cooling down, I’ve been planting these Rex Begonias en masses in my shaded fern and orchid garden where they look like a Persian carpet with their deep red, green and pink leaves.

Going in to autumn, my collection are showing no signs of slowing down. We are fortunate that with our climate, plants that are annuals in cooler climes keep on keeping on in the sub-tropics. Destructive chickens aside, Begonias are surprisingly resilient to pests with neither the hoards of caterpillars nor grasshoppers displaying any interest in them. They have also resisted the mealy bugs that have invaded almost everything else. That said, they are susceptible to a bit of fungus, so water from the bottom and try to maintain good airflow. I don’t profess to be anything other than a complete novice when it comes to Begonias and I am still learning, but it has been a joy …the lesson learned being, that when the weather won’t cooperate with your gardening master plan, to try something new…..you never know what you’ll be rewarded with.

On the river NOOSAVILLE - SHOP - EAT - CRUISE From sunrise to sunset along the park that runs adjacent to the Noosa River (known as the ‘golden mile’) you’ll find a passing parade of people walking their dogs, others taking the time to amble along watching the boats - as they motor or sail past; devotees of tai chi and yoga carefully going through their daily rituals; and others enjoying a quiet cup of coffee with friends; while mothers and holiday makers take their little ones for a walk or ride under the bowers of towering trees.

A

long the foreshore, helpful information centre staff will book tours for you to visit Fraser Island (the world’s largest sand island, and home to Australia’s purest dingos), as well as trips to the mystical Everglades, or themed cruises. With playgrounds and exercise equipment, as well as electric barbecues, and covered table and bench seating positioned around the area, it is the perfect place for a family get together. The carefree nature of the area is mirrored by the gentle wings of the pelicans and seagulls, as they soar high above before coasting in to the shoreline in search of the prime position for sleeping or checking out the chance of catching a fish down below; as those wishing to spend some time on the water hire kayaks, paddle boards, small boats and pontoons from the local boat shed operators. If not so inclined, you can still enjoy the river by hopping aboard the ferry for a leisurely cruise. There’s even a sunset cruise available at The Jetty, where you can take a bottle of wine and a few nibbles along for the ride. The ferry provides glasses for you ease.

Noosaville has always been a must-visit destination for great shopping and dining possibilities - and now it’s getting even more exciting. There has also been an exhilarating number of new restaurants opening in Noosaville to join longtime favourites like Flux and Thomas Corner , Noosa Boathouse and Waterfront. New restaurants include Barefoot Bar & Grill on Gympie Terrace offering diners water views and good breezes on a hot day or night; YoYo has also opened on the Terrace and is a sister bar to IS Tapas - both serving tantalising cocktails and an eclectic range of wines; a new Greek restaurant, Santorini is adding to the dining scene, with a new breakfast menu soon; .and Secret Garden Café at Acres garden centre just up the road, is offering diners a touch of Spanish and Caribbean flavour in a garden setting. There’s never been a better time to visit for the day and stay on till the evening!!

The Last Word COMMENTS FROM KEITH JACKSON

N

OOSA COUNCIL took a step towards greater transparency in February as it began to video stream its two most important meetings, although the broadcast gateway is a devil to find on the Council’s website. Nevertheless, nearly 100 people tuned in live or later (the videos are archived) to catch proceedings. That’s a heck of a lot better than the usual handful of residents in the public gallery. IN MY previous column I expounded briefly on Noosa’s aversion to traffic lights, a position evangelised by former mayor Playford and carried forward into the Wellington regime as some kind of stand against city symbolism. Well in February 200 of the good people of Cooroy filled the local memorial hall to hear local MPs and others offer their views on two lethal intersections about which a traffic light versus roundabout debate has raged for a decade, maybe longer. It was pointed out by a traffic expert that lights are not only much cheaper than roundabouts but much, much safer for pedestrians and cyclists. A poll taken at the end of the night showed 60 people preferring roundabouts, 45 people favouring lights and 10 people happy to risk their lives as at present. My bet is that this argument has at least another 10 years (and hopefully no mortalities or disabling injuries) left in it.

NOOSA WAS once the fertile, forested home of the Kabi Kabi people, who inhabited a large stretch of the Sunshine Coast. Accounts from the 1860s indicate there were several hundred people living around Noosa’s waterways. At about that time a party of eight white men travelled to Lake Weyba where a large group of the Kabi Kabi had a camp. Following a plan, one of the men walked to a creek on the southeast of the lake while his companions hid in the bush. The people were intrigued and paddled across to him in canoes. As they approached, they were fired upon and an unknown number killed. You can see the prominent Murdering Creek Road signpost on Walter Hay Drive not far out of town. WHICH LEADS to some numbers from the last national census of 2016 which revealed Noosa Shire was home to 666 Aboriginal people – just one percent of the total population. This compared with Australia’s First Peoples comprising four percent of Queensland’s population and three percent nationally. It seems to me that there’s inadequate recognition (read, hardly any) of the original Australian people of Noosa – and their often tragic history – and it’s past time that Noosa Council (known for throwing money at often questionable projects like ‘bringing back fish’ to a pristine Noosa River which is full of them) did something to remedy this gaping deficiency. A FEW more of Noosa’s sobering statistics. The proportion of separated or divorced people at 15% ranks significantly higher

than the Queensland and Australian averages. Seems like a good place to sort yourself out (and meet a replacement) after that traumatic marriage breakdown. And maybe this has got something to do with the number of people who describe themselves as having no religion: nationally the figure is three people in 10; in godless Noosa it’s four. And if you think Noosa’s wealthy, you’d be wrong. It has more people on incomes of less than $650 a week and fewer people on incomes of more than $3,000 a week than the Queensland and Australian averages. COUNTRY LIFE. Someone asked the local Noosa community Facebook page “where are all the bush turkeys these days?” Among the many scores of responses were these doozies. Deborah O’Neill – “My place.” Justin Jackson – “Moving my neighbour’s garden to the other side of their driveway.” Christine Schooth – “Maybe the tourists each took one home.” Beth Hale - “Cooran. How many do you need?” Jade Bernadette – “Chasing me when I try to take the rubbish out.” Pammie Griffin – “In my yard, help yourself.” Garry North – “In my bloody house at Sunrise Beach.” Suzannah Hensen – “I don’t know, but I guarantee one will pop out of nowhere if I leave a bag in my front yard, rip it to pieces and strew rubbish all over my driveway.” Jason Heel – “They have all been urbanised and prefer to be identify as chickens.” Gregg Piercy – “Hopefully they’ve moved to another planet.”
