Welcome to our bright and beautiful summer issue...

welcome
IT'S TIME TO CLINK THE CHAMPAGNE GLASSES AND TOAST THE FESTIVE SEASON ONCE AGAIN. Where has this year gone? Everyone is talking about how fast time goes by these days. It's not just we older ones who are noticing the speed of time - the younger ones are all debating the fact as well, There just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day to accomplish all that we want or need to do. Our frenetic lifestyles are causing us to miss the 'little things' that are so important to us, whilst chasing the 'big picture'. Maybe it's time to take stock, before we make our New Year's Eve resolutions. Hopefully with 2009 ready to leap into our lives, we will find a way to slow down and enjoy family, friends, and life itself. That's my New Year's resolution this year - to find some extra 'me' time (yes I know that sounds selfish!) but that does include family and friends, of course. There's no ME without US. We've been working long into the night to bring you our bumper, Summer issue of NOOSA Style Magazine. To brighten your summer days and nights, we have brought together all the special elements that will tantalise and titillate your senses this season. We have a fantastic fashion section featuring all the latest designs from local, Australian and international designers - just perfect for all those summer parties. Of course, you'll want to be fully energised for the festive season, so a visit to the spa for a luxurious treatment; the hairdressers for a trim or a whole new style - and your favourite beauty therapist to make the look complete. Then you'll need the perfect accessories - designer jewellery, fabulous new shoes and complementing bag. It is Christmas, so we're allowed to be extravagant with our wishes! Our beautiful food feature offers tantalising restaurants to enjoy over the festive season and all through summer, as well as luscious dishes that you can prepare in the comfort of your own kitchen, and fabulous wines to enjoy with all your friends. Our beautiful Summer issue is full to overflowing with everything you could possibly need this season. A perfect snapshot of our Noosa lifestyle. To all our loyal readers, wonderful clients, printer and business associates We wish you all a wonderful Christmas full of love, and a happy and prosperous New Year full of hope and promise. Sit back, relax and enjoy...

threads woven with nature Their wedding rings are engraved with meus amor meus spiritus which is Latin for ‘my love my life’ and as Helen Flanagan discovers, Gordon and Belinda Herford really are the epitome of togetherness.
P
repare to be enthralled when you meet the Herfords. Oh and do allow lots of time. Gordon has the knack of inviting you into Belinda’s gallery and her ‘world’, describing in detail how thick brushes laden with lush-coloured oil paints mixed by her, are carefully washed wandlike onto large Belgian linen canvasses. The layers and textures are intriguing, they burnish with age and are reminiscent of fabric, which is not surprising given Adelaide-born Belinda’s ten year tenure in the fashion industry, the culmination of which was winning Australian Gown of the Year in 1986. Her creation was made in white leather. After adding photography and interior design to her list of credits, they moved to Noosa and with encouragement from Gordon, Belinda began painting. She had no formal training yet was a natural talent, choosing oils for their rich robust quality and large canvases as big as three metres by one metre. This was a serious move and one she obviously relishes today. "I have various styles and love experimenting with technique, colour, pattern and texture,” Belinda explains. “I have a deep affinity for native and tribal

and I enjoy creating patterns with dots. I am inspired by just about anything natural or aesthetic and often walk around looking at lines, textures and the simplicity of nature. Gordon began his jewellery career in Sydney, entered his first De Beers award in 1985 winning the Diamond Anniversary ring category and in 1987 won three categories including Supreme Diamond Design Award. He decided he’d enough of awards preferring instead to design exclusive individual pieces for his many national and international clients. Utilizing the ancient lost wax method of creating original designs and his exceptional skill as a sculptor is evident in all of his wax-carved pieces. He is also recognised for his interpretation of classic jewellery including intricate back-piercing. “I add soul and the feel of the organic rather than just having an austere technical execution,” master jeweller Gordon explains, adding clients have included Jamie Packer’s first wife Jodhi Meares and the Hemmes family whose interests include a string of hip Sydney nightspots. Meeting each other was love at first sight. “Gordon is warm, funny, out-going, goodlooking, passionate, confident, artistic and individual,” enthuses Belinda ‘We eloped to Bedarra Island in 1999, and eight years ago we moved from the Sydney beachside suburb of Cronulla.” “We built a house in Little Cove in 1996, hated living in the city, and came to Noosa for the surf, small community feel, clean air, natural environment and great restaurants,” says Gordon, who with Belinda also designed the Sunshine Coast’s continued next page

first fully thatched roof house. It was located in Coolum and featured in glossy magazines. “We now live at Sunrise Beach, one street back from beach, backing onto a reserve and are turning it into a French/Caribbean-style beach house. Bella and Lou Lou are our Burmese cats and Rocco the goldfish lets us pat him.” Two years ago Scorpio Gordon and Aquarius Belinda opened separate spaces at Quamby Place, an idyllic location close to Hastings Street, next to the Noosa River and abutting a park which they hope one day will be transformed into an art-park. “We wanted a French-style boutique and contemporary art gallery to complement the ambience – a destination rather than passing trade,” describes Belinda, adding that it’s amazing how often Gordon’s friendliness of explaining things such as where a soy chai latte is served or a gold chain can be fixed, have resulted in big spending clients. There’s a certain magnetism which draws you into the tiny, haute-couture-style salon with its comfy tub chairs and exquisite jewellery displayed on objects d’art. Miniature musical instruments, antique perfume bottles and a carved coconut shell, add a sense of theatre as the perfect backdrop to spin-tingling pearls and diamonds, especially the 2007 Diamond Guild Australia Argyle Pink Diamond category winner. Gordon called his design ‘Fleur de Lumiere' and said it was inspired by floral lace: “Two bands were incorporated to create one ring. One’s an 18 carat white gold concave inner band set with a bed of 220 white diamonds; the outer band was hand-carved creating a floral design which is in 22 carat yellow gold and set with varying sizes of pink Argyle diamonds in the centre of each flower. The use of yellow gold highlights the pink and white diamonds and the 23mm width was designed to make a bold yet feminine statement.” Currently he’s creating an exclusive range of similar designs based on this piece and sees jewellery as incorporating the worlds of fashion and art. “Diamonds as a loose gem represent myriad colours and light just begging to be framed and worn. A diamond’s true value lies in its ability to impart emotion whether it is a romantic gift or a just self-indulgence. No other gem achieves this quite so dramatically when combined with good design.” Macquarie Bank in Brisbane has held a private exhibition of Belinda’s work; a ten piece commission of large abstract oils has been completed for the Settler's Cove Development; and a solo exhibition in February 2009 at Kozminsky's Gallery in Bourke Street Melbourne is feverishly being brush-stroked. In-between times you’ll find the Herfords in the water somewhere, eating mud crabs and rock walking or at home watching an old movie classic, working on a sculpture for the roof of the Quamby Place precinct or concocting something delish in the kitchen. Living by the credos of “integrity in our art” and “exchange is abundance” this formidable double act respect Mother Nature implicitly and embody passion in its truest form.

hildren stood in awe as Santa and his elves, snowmen and street performers, assisted Mayor Bob Abbot, turn on the lights of the Coast’s largest Christmas tree. It was then off to the Woods for Christmas carols and Cinema Under the Stars. Earlier in the day 19 restaurants turned up the heat and impressed more than 800 at the Long Lunch. Umbrella’d and decorated tables were set along the closed-off southern side of the street; hat-ed diners sipped Red Claw by Yabby Lake and tucked into over 1500 dishes of fine fare; entertainment ranged from a trio performing amazing feats to a harpist; and men ogled at the gorgeous models wearing the latest swimwear and fashions from Blue Heaven, Elizas and Vestiario while Caitlin, Serina and Christina, who wore bright, floral, silk dresses handed out goodies and invitations to pop into Toscano for a glass of bubbles. Champagne shopping at its best continued on Saturday and Sunday as did art trails; a sand sculpture exhibition from Australia’s best professionals happened on Main Beach; and an outdoor concert featuring Peter Cousins star of Les Miserables and more, plus soprano Trisha Crowe, a group calling themselves The Rat Pack’s Back, plus former Sherbet frontman Daryl Braithwaite entertained at a free open-air concert. Local charity Frangipani Dreams received the proceeds of refreshment sales. Traders reaped the benefit of participating in the weekend and Ruth and Orm Thomas, who have been holidaying in Noosa every year for the past 12 years were thrilled to win the ‘Audi-load’ of prizes worth $20,000. “It has been a great weekend and a fabulous way to re-launch Hastings Street,” says Jim Berardo, the president of the Hastings Street Association who confirmed the Longest Lunch will become an annual event. “Huge congratulations must go to all the traders who embraced the event and made it such a great success. There’s no doubt the new-look Hastings Street will continue to impress.” noosa 16 style

he system of waterways from Noosa, which include clear lakes, dark tannin waters and sand dunes form the gateway to the world’s largest sand island, and heritage-listed Fraser Island. Noosaville was a sleepy hollow in the 1920s except for the first café in the area, called The Favourite, which was owned by the Massouds. It became a magnet for troops during World War 11 when troops drove their amphibious army ducks out of the river to collect their fresh fish and chips, cooked on a tiny wooden stove. The late Maisie Massoud said that even during war rationing the family got by somehow. If people had money they paid for their food, otherwise it was free. Today Maisie’s is on the site of The Favourite on Gympie Terrace. The Noosaville precinct, surrounded by Gibson Road, Thomas Street and

The Noosa River is home to the Riverlight Ferry which wends it way to and from Tewantin and Hastings Street. The riverside park has been charmingly landscaped with barbecue facilities, meandering walks and even exercise equipment. Offerings include water sports, boat and jetski hire, cruises, sailing, tennis and swimming. Cycling is made easy along the dedicated bikeways including the Waters Bikeway looping from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club around Noosa Waters, or the Mangroves and Creeks Bicycle Ride from Gympie Terrace to Noosa Junction. A very Barossa Christmas – at your place...
Saskia Beer
Saskia Beer is bringing the best of Barossa Valley produce to the Christmas table with her famous free range turkeys, hand-rolled chicken ballotines, and for the first time this year, Black Berkshire hams. Beer’s Barossa Farm Produce hams are part of the Black Pig range of Berkshire artisan smallgoods launched earlier this year. Each ham is hand made, sugar cured and smoked in a traditional smoke house in the Barossa Valley. The hams embody the unique attributes of the Berkshire breed – flavour and texture. Black Berkshire is considered the finest pork in the world; a favourite of the British royal family for more than 300 years, and prized in Japan (where it is known as Kurobata.) Like its bovine equivalent Wagyu beef, the secret of Berkshire pork’s taste lies in the fine intramuscular marbling of the meat. “We are focusing on suckling hams which offer the most concentrated flavour,” Beer says.
In terms of preparation of the ham, her advice is to keep it simple. “I always keep glazing easy to let the meat speak for itself. Either buy a jar of Maggie Beer quince glaze, or mix two tablespoons of dark brown sugar and two tablespoons of grainy mustard.” It has also been a very busy year for Barossa Farm Produce’s poultry operations. “The turkeys this year are beautiful big birds which we think are the best we have ever produced.” The Barossa Farm Produce Christmas turkeys have been on the wish-list of chefs across Australia since the first batch six years ago. Due to free-range farming on a diet of corn and foraging, the meat is tender and golden in colour. This year, Beer has chosen a stuffing of red currant, lemon, rosemary and sage for the turkeys. Adding an extra dimension to her famous Barossa Chickens for Christmas, Beer has created a selection of Chicken ballotines with two different kinds of stuffing – mushroom and porcini, and spinach and lemon. All bones are removed, making carving at the table easy. The Barossa Farm Produce Christmas range is available from David Jones and select retailers across the country, including Jones the Grocer at Noosa Civic Centre.

Pure & simple luxury.. Belong There’s more to Hastings Street than a great beach… Here’s your ‘must-do’ list for summer.
The five stars of the Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa have been given added sparkle.
A
rriving guests of the hotel are in for a big surprise. The new look lobby, Link@Sheraton and the River Lounge have been designed by Cate Young, design director of CYD. “The desired aesthetic is to blend nature with understated elegance and a fresh, a modern twist befitting a luxury beachside resort,” says Cate, who is based in Sydney but having spent holidays in Noosa since she was 12, calls it her second home. "CYD approached the design to the Sheraton as an interactive installation. The interaction is between spatial zones, light, colour and the elements. The hotel is blessed with one of the most enviable locations on the planet, surrounded by nature, including the Noosa River, Noosa Beach, and the Noosa National Park. I wanted the space to reflect this. “The River Lounge design mirrors the spill of natural light throughout the space, using neutral colours, warm timbers and modern furniture. The aesthetic key to unlocking the design is the element of ‘nature’ and all the sensations that it
evokes. This is reflected in the use of natural finishes, pure and simple textures and shapes, and the use of landscaping throughout the space, creating a tranquil inviting forum in which hotel guests can interact. “Elegance has been injected in the form of glamorous feature lighting, decorative perforated metal screens and a hint of metallic finishes to create a sense of soft drama.” The River Lounge offers contemporary menu items designed by executive sous chef, Scott Freund including light snacks throughout the day, high tea and more substantial dishes in the evening. The Link@Sheraton is a warm and comforting place off the lobby, for re-connecting with business or home in a specially designed communal lounge area. It features three sleek lifestyle computers where guests can surf the internet, email loved ones, review local attractions and print up boarding passes plus catch up on domestic and international news with a diverse selection of reading material. “The Link is an exciting development for our guests and it has created the perfect environment for our guests to connect with home or business,” says Stephen Ferrigno, general manager of Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa.

International Italian Cuisines Day 2009 In the name of Risotto alla Milanese
A

long with pizza and spaghetti, risotto is by far the most popular Italian dish around the world. However, its fame is relatively recent; it is commonly believed that it became famous at the end of the ‘80s of the last century in Italian restaurants of the U.S. East Coast from where it eventually spread to the rest of the world. For this reason, risotto is the symbol of modern Italian cuisine abroad; it represents the point of passing the basic Italian (Neapolitan) cooking, based on pasta, tomato sauce, and Parmigiano, that travelled with the immigrants. U.S. food critics have associated risotto with Northern Italian cuisine, which became a fashionable restaurant category during the last two decades of the 21st century. The father of all risotto was the “alla milanese”, with its unmistakable orange-yellow colour. The success of risotto has been and still is such that it has by now become a kind of “technique” used extremely liberally in all kinds of cooking. Precisely due to this popularity, risotto is now among the most counterfeited Italian dishes in the world. It has, therefore, been chosen to be the dish to celebrate the itchefs-GVCI International Day of Italian Cuisines. As in 2008, on 17th January 2009, chefs in hundreds of restaurants

2008 Logan Sauvignon Blanc from Orange, New South Wales... NAMED THE 2008 WINESTATE MAGAZINE SAUVIGNON BLANC OF THE YEAR. It’s been a phenomenal year for the 2008 Logan Sauvignon Blanc which also claimed trophies at the 2008 Murrumbateman Cool Climate Wine Show and 2008 Orange Wine Show. The wine took out the Winestate Award for Sauvignon Blanc of the Year from a pool of 46 finalists (comprised of wines rated four and a half or five stars by the Winestate judging panel) from both Australian and New Zealand producers. Ecstatic Winemaker Peter Logan said: “This is a huge honour – beating the All Blacks has nothing on beating the Kiwis at Sauvignon Blanc,” “I’m really proud of this wine – it has loads of varietal aroma and flavour but still remains smoothly drinkable, which is not always the case with sauvignon blanc. I believe this style of sauvignon blanc is the way forward for this varietal – half way between the strong, pungent and incredibly popular Kiwi style and the more refined, subtle, minerally and beautifully balanced Sancerre style.” The Logan 2008 Sauvignon Blanc retails for $22.00.

Offering an intense mouth-filling experience enhanced by a light frizzante, Cienna will remind you of fresh, ripe cherries and juicy berries, while providing a gently sparkling, smooth and soft refreshing finish. A wine full of lively summer berry characters that will add an element of surprise to your dessert table. Pairs beautifully with chocolate, cherries and berries - perfect for Christmas desserts, but works equally as well with antipasto platters or hot, spicy Spanish dishes. Chill and enjoy with or without food.
Wild Oats In the world of Australian wine sales, three styles in particular stand out as the hippest wines that will be enjoyed this summer. Sales of Aussie sauvignon blanc blends, pinot grigio and rose continue to out-perform the dominant varietals - chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet. Wild Oats have just released the first of their hip and happening 2008 vintage wines - all three light, bright and set to tantalise your tastebuds. Wild Oats Sauvlgnon Blanc Semlllon 2008: hailing from Westem Australia, is a 'classic' unwooded blend of 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon. Wild Oats Pinot Grigio 2008: exhibits bright, crisp flavours of apple and pear in a fresh unwooded style that should be enjoyed in its youth. Wild Oats Rose 2008: produced from a melange of red grape varietals all of which are sourced from the family's own vineyards in Mudgee. Perfect for lovers enjoying its generous fruitiness balanced by a crisp dry finish.

wine Sam Miranda’s Symphonia Tempranillo Rosata 2008 judged excellent food wine... Sam Miranda of the King Valley, has had his Symphonia Tempranillo Rosata 2008 awarded a Blue Gold award at the Sydney International Wine Competition. The Rosata won amongst stiff competition. The SIWC received a record number of entries making this year’s judging decisions the toughest to date. Food can change the experience of a wine, and wine is more often consumed with food than not. Sadly, however, wine shows and competitions rarely judge wine for its compatibility with food. The SIWC is the only competition in Australia which judges wine by its affinity with food. The Symphonia Tempranillo Rosata was judged alongside over 2100 entries, by an international panel of fourteen judges from seven countries, including Australia, Hong Kong, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, UK and the USA and chaired by Kym Milne MW. It was rated in the
top ten per cent of all entries judged alongside appropriate food. The Symphonia vineyard has been trialling Tempranillo for ten years, pioneering the Spanish variety in Australia. Tempranillo, with its balanced characters of fruit and savoury notes, makes for an excellent Rosé variety. The Symphonia Tempranillo Rosata 2008 is made in a dry, savoury, European style, boasting a vibrant crimson colour and exhibiting aromas of fresh strawberries and spice. The palate displays flavours of ripe berries, whilst the finish is crisp and refreshing. Symphonia’s Rosata makes a fine accompaniment to Asian food, or light Mediterranean dishes such as Spanish tapas. Rosé is a growing wine style as more Australians become aware of its full bodied, chilled benefits. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy Rosé. Available in selected retailers, at Cellar Door and online at www.sammiranda.com.au It retails for RRP $20 per bottle.

Return of the Ark A treasure worth more than $20 million was buried in a vast underground cellar in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, when Australia’s largest wine storage business, Wine Ark, opened its sixth facility. Dean Taylor started the business in 1999 and today, the Sydney cellar alone houses more than two million bottles. Wine Ark Brisbane has the capacity to house more than 350,000 bottles and Taylor expects to exceed that within 18 months based on the initial response from the local market and the sustained national growth of the business. The expansion into the Queensland market was an obvious step for the business based on the heat extremities of the Queensland climate, and the growing market for collectable wine. There are already two Wine Ark sites on the Sunshine Coast at Coolum and Kawana and the opening of the Brisbane site is a “coming home” of sorts for former Brisbane-ite Taylor. “The Queensland wine market has been booming over the past 10 years and is now one of the most sophisticated in Australia,” Taylor says. “We’ve already got plans on the drawing board for another site with more space.” Proving his point, the first bottle of wine placed into the managed cellar was a bottle of Grand Cru Romanee-Conti from the legendary producer Domaine de la Romanee Conti. It is valued at more than $5000. The company offers a range of options for storing and managing wine, clients have access to their wine every day of the year plus attend regular tastings and sales of rare and collectible wines.

Elusive white truffle hunt Photos Shaun Morris
AMONGST THE INTERNATIONAL CHEFS ATTENDING ITALY’S BI-ANNUAL SALONE DEL GUSTO WERE THREE FROM NOOSA, INCLUDING BLUE ANGEL’S DANIEL MOSEDALE, WHO SHARES HIS EXPERIENCES.
T
hanks to an invitation from the organizers of the slow food salone del gusto and terra madre, I traveled to Turin joining berardo’s restaurant’s Shaun Morris and Ma Mensa’s Belinda Tuckwell. On day three when the alarm went off at 6am on Saturday morning it took us about 20 minutes to workout why the hell it had been set anyway. There was still plenty of time left to eat as many different things made from a pig as possible, wash them down with the most amazing wines from the Piedmont region and recall that only nine hours before Shaun and I had been privy to an unbelievable tasting of 96 Barolo wines. That’s the year not the quantity. Then it hit us. Today we were off to Alba and its truffle market. Not just any old truffle market, this is the big daddy of the truffle world. The white truffle runs for a very short season, starting in November for only six to eight weeks. The rarity and mystique of the tartuffi bianchi commands prices way out of the reach of the mere mortal. Only two days before in a swanky truffle and foie gras seller in Paris, we had seen some of the first white truffles of the season on sale for the mind-numbing price of 10,000 euros a kilo. That’s just insane. So there we were on the train from Turin to Alba dressed in a very unNoosa get-up of hats, scarves and woolly jumpers and as excited as two 11 year old boys heading off to see their first footy game. Back in Noosa I’d told everyone about my idea of buying some truffles and as the scent of the truffles is on par with the scent of 10 day old socks I’d hide them to fool the customs dogs and inspectors, then have a slap up dinner of home made egg pasta with shaved truffle and of course Barolo. Arriving in Alba we expected to be hit with the smell of truffles and to see very dodgy looking blokes wearing long coats standing on the street corners, a bit like drug dealers, beckoning us over to see their wares. We didn’t expect to have to ask four people where all the truffles were, then be directed to a hall with the very official banner proclaiming to be the international white truffle fair, and a queue of people waiting to pay three euros just to go in. I concluded that the white truffle market was such big business that the government wanted to get their hands on some of the cash so outlawed the sale of them anywhere that they couldn’t keep records of their sales.
In a room the size of a football field the lucky few (about 12) who had actually managed to find the elusive fungi had set up little glass cabinets showing off their find. The going rate on the day was between 4,500 and 5,000 euros per kilo and varying sizes from tiny little pieces to the biggest weighing about 300g way out of my price range, especially seeing as I really didn’t hold high hopes of fooling the sniffer dogs. After lots of touching, squeezing, sniffing and mumbling made-up Italian words, I went in for the kill. I had spotted one good looking truffle weighing a whopping 19g and a price tag of 85 euros. With absolutely no way of negotiating a better price, I shoved the money into the hand of the old geezer selling it and tried to explain in Italian/French/English that I had better get a tax invoice or my wife would kill me. I just couldn’t manage to get the message across so gave up. By now I was really getting caught up in the whole scene and decided more truffles would be bought and feasted upon, back in Noosa. Next stop was a stall with a pretty young thing, unlike the others who for the most part were old boys who had probably spent their lives looking for and selling these funny looking things. Off I went with intention of flirting and sweet talking this obviously inexperienced girl into giving me a truffle cheap. No such luck. I handed over 50 euros for a small rubble of a thing and went on my merry way. I spent about 400 euros on truffles, three euros on a kilo of polenta and two euros on a jam jar, in which to hide the truffles with the polenta. Whew, what a morning. Walking around the town of Alba all I could smell was these damned truffles seeping through my back pack. Pungent. They are like nothing on earth and there is nothing to compare them to. The black French truffle is tame by comparison, summer truffles don’t bare any resemblance and truffle oil…don’t get me started. This was a once in a life time experience to go to Alba in truffle season, buy them at the market, feast on them in a restaurant where we went to for a great lunch plus bring some home. Can’t wait for next time.
AFTER LOTS OF TOUCHING, SQUEEZING, SNIFFING AND MUMBLING MADE-UP ITALIAN WORDS, I WENT IN FOR THE KILL. noosa 38 style

Salmon with orange marinade Ingredients: 4 x 100 g pieces salmon fillet, skin removed 1 tbs olive oil Marinade: juice of 2 Valencia oranges juice of 1/2 lemon 1 tbs tomato paste (no added salt) 1 tsp madras curry powder 1 tsp ginger, finely grated ½ tsp brown sugar Cucumber relish: 2 Lebanese cucumbers, peeled, halved and seeded 2 Roma tomatoes, halved and seeded juice of 1 Valencia orange juice of ½ lemon 1-2 tbs chopped fresh mint leaves 2 green onions, finely chopped ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp sugar Method: To make the marinade, stir together juices, tomato paste, spices and sugar. Place fish in baking dish and pour half of marinade over fillets. Cover and marinade in fridge for 15 minutes. Set aside remaining marinade and make the sauce later. To make the relish cut cucumbers and tomatoes into small cubes. Add juices, mint, onion and season with salt and sugar. Cool and cover. Preheat oven to 100°C. Heat a non stick frying pan or barbecue until hot. Brush with oil. Remove fish from marinade (discard left over marinade) and put it in pan, presentation side down. Cook for 3-4 minutes (depending upon thickness of the fish), turn and cook for a further minute (flesh flakes when tested). Rest in a warm oven for about 1 minute. Add remaining marinade to the hot pan, simmer and reduce slightly. Place a piece of fish on each plate and top with the sauce and relish. Serve with steamed brown or wild rice or a wholegrain baguette. Hint: White fish alternative use snapper, ling or barramundi fillets. Serves: 4

Small blemishes do not affect the quality or taste however Valencias have a natural greening on the skin. This is a sign of nature’s sunscreen, ensuring the Valencia is ripe, fresh and bright orange inside. Skin colour does not necessarily determine freshness, although bruised or shrivelled skin should be avoided. For a greater amount of juice choose fruit that are heavy for their size and have a thin skin. Keep oranges at room temperature, in a cool dark place, removed from plastic bags. Oranges will last for approximately one week. To prolong life, oranges can be stored in the crisper compartment of the fridge. Freshly squeezed juice and grated peel or zest can be refrigerated or frozen. Whole oranges should not be frozen, as juice expands and bursts inside cells, leaving the defrosted orange with a dry pulp and mushy peel. pineapple cored, trimmed and sliced 4-5 ice cubes 3-4 large basil leaves Method: Put juice of oranges, banana and pineapple
Renowned for Vitamin C content, one orange has almost twice the recommended daily Vitamin C intake. However, other great nutritional properties of oranges are often forgotten about. Generally, citrus fruits have the highest antioxidant activity of all fruits, helping to boost the immune system and protect against cancer and heart disease. Start the day with a refreshing juice. Squeeze fresh oranges and chill overnight. To retain vitamin C content and colour, cover tightly and refrigerate immediately. Add a few tablespoons of fresh juice to flavour fruit salads; for a fresh smoothie, combine the juice of oranges with other fruits and yoghurt; to create a simple dressing with 1 ½ cups of fresh juice, ¼ cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper, and for a zesty marinade try 1/2 cup of juice, 1 crushed garlic, 2 tablespoons olive oil, ¼ fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons rind and ½ teaspoon salt. juice or pineapple in blender and blend until smooth. Plump fragrant mangoes are evocative of summer and have no bounds when it comes to versatility. Calypso mangoes are available from October until March which is the longest season of any Australian mango. This particular variety has a thinner, blush coloured skin, and a fibreless firm flesh which is juicy and flavoursome. It contains a super-small seed which means more succulent flesh to eat and therefore better value for money. Bursting with vitamin E, potassium, extra vitamin A, C, beta carotene and lots of fibre, serious aficionados say they are best devoured fresh after pulling the skin back, then slurp away letting the juices slide down your arms and drip from the elbow. An unripe mango should always be kept at room temperature and out of direct sunlight until it is fully ripe and stored in the fridge for 23 days. But why wait that long to savour the sweet juicy flavour when a smoothie, cocktail, salad, salsa or dessert beckons.

style Homoeopathy makes sense.... HOMOEOPATHY ENJOYS SIGNIFICANT POPULARITY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, BUT IS OFTEN SIMPLY MISUNDERSTOOD. The word homoeopathy originates from the Greek words homoios (similar) and pathos (suffering). The principle of similars refers to repeated observation that an overdose of a substance which causes certain symptoms in a healthy person, elicits a healing response when administered in specially formulated nanodoses (very small doses), to a person whose illness has similar symptoms. A simple example is that of the plant Deadly Nightshade, which, when given in an overdose, induces symptoms such as a throbbing headache, high fever, burning skin, delirium (to name but a few), all symptoms of fever in many common illnesses. When administered in a homoeopathic nanodose (known as Belladonna), it elicits a healing response and cures these symptoms, which represent the body’s best efforts to defend against stress or infection. Homoeopathic nanodoses mimic such defence processes, instead of suppressing or inhibiting them. Carolyn Graham of Noosa Homoeopathic says: “In mainstream medicine today, allergy treatments and immunisations are two examples of stimulating the body’s own defence mechanisms for the prevention or treatment of some diseases. These are derived from the same principle of similars already inherent in Homoeopathy. Medical research is looking increasingly towards stimulating the body’s own defence mechanisms, in response to a growing avalanche of chronic disease. Working with the wisdom of the body, and activating its own intelligent healing ability, instead of suppressing it, has become the new paradigm in cutting-edge, medical research. The principle of similars (stimulating the body's corrective measures by mimicking them), as opposed to the principle of opposites (suppressing those same measures), appears to have finally come of age. It is capturing the interest of a much broader demographic, within both the general population and the scientific community."

ustralians love the life outdoors especially in summer and while sunshine can be beneficial, over-exposure is fraught with danger. Two out of every three people will develop at least one skin cancer during their life and each year more than 380,000 Australians receive treatment with about 9500 cases of melanoma and more than 1600 skincancer deaths. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the main cause for the high rate and Australia is the highest in the world. Exposure to the sun is also responsible for premature ageing and wrinkling of the skin. Sunscreens alone will not protect against skin cancers so avoid being out in the sun without protection especially between 10am and 3pm. That means covering up with protective clothing including sunglasses, a broad brimmed hat or legionnaire style cap, being under cover and of course using a sunscreen with the maximum sun protection factor or SPF. Sunscreens work by absorbing part or most of the UVR by providing a chemical barrier to the skin. The sunscreen may reflect or scatter part or all of the UVR away from your skin by forming a physical blocker. SPF relates to the amount of time it takes for your skin to burn. People have different skin types and therefore the length of protection given by sunscreens will differ. For example if unprotected skin takes 10 minutes to burn, a SPF 15+ sunscreen will mean it will take 15 times as long or 150 minutes to burn. The higher the SPF, the higher the protection it provides. Needless to say sunscreen should be applied correctly and always remember even an SPF30+ broad spectrum sunscreen filters only 96.7 per cent of radiation. The first application of sunscreen is the most important. Apply evenly and liberally to exposed areas of the skin 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. This allows time for the sunscreen to adhere well. Re-apply regularly, particularly after prolonged swimming or excessive perspiration. It is recommended that re-application to children is performed more frequently. Young children have particularly sensitive skin so sun exposure should be avoided. If sun exposure cannot be avoided, ensure they have sunscreen applied to any areas where any of the skin is not protected by shade or clothing. There have been reports in the US that says four out of five sunscreens offer inadequate protection or have ingredients such as a compound called oxybenzone that may be a health risk. In Australia all chemicals have been tested and approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, however contents can vary so read the label. Cancer Council formulations do not contain oxybenzone.

Creek to coast to being mum..
BORN WITH SALT IN HER BLOOD, WIND IN HER SAILS AND A PASSION FOR FISHING, COOKING AND TRAVEL, SALLY JENYNS WAS FLATTERED WHEN SHE WAS ASKED TO RETURN TO CHANNEL 7’S CREEK TO COAST. BUT JUGGLING LIFE WITH CHILDREN AND THEIR FATHER MARK, WHO’S A BUSY BUILDER, HOW DOES SHE SQUEEZE EVERYTHING IN?
W
ith grandparents on both sides of the family, a brother and parents heavily into boats and fishing, effervescent Sally is used to being surrounded by males, however it was not until she had the two boys that she realised what noise machines they can be. “They are awesome and the frenetic activity and sound levels of little brothers is quite astounding,” says Sally referring to Matt who celebrates his sixth birthday in January and Timmy who turns four, also in January. “They love anything to do with the outdoors, ball sports, bike riding and the beach. Billy (Mark) has started teaching Matt to surf which is very cool and very cute. He is also about to finish his first year, (prep) at St. Andrews, and it has been incredible to see him transform from a kid, who just wanted to run and play into reading and writing - just beginners of course. It’s great they're so keen.”
noosa 54 style
Sally Jenyns has returned to television albeit a less demanding role, as Helen Flanagan explains.
Fever pitch starts at the Sunshine Beach home at 6.30am with breakfast, school lunches, dressing, brushing teeth and more, punctuated by nagging and nonsensical arguments before being piled into the car. “I aim for an hour’s exercise each week day, as much for the mind as the body, either swimming laps, Bukram or hot yoga, weight training, pram pushing and after a little house and office work, it’s usually 2.30pm in a blink and time for the school run.” Sally, whose cookbooks are sold through the Creek to Coast website, was truly flattered when she was asked back onto the program last year, and despite what appears to be a frazzled schedule, she leapt at the opportunity to be a presenter once again, plus put plans in train to publish a second edition of her most popular recipe collection: “I’m working part time which suits everyone. When an assignment comes up that’s within my realm and I’m available I’ll accept. So far there’s been numerous cooking segments on boats, a crayfish farm and elsewhere but the job I really loved was being part of the team at Hamilton Island Race Week. “I've been traveling to Hamilton for over two decades but have never been there during race week. It was so exciting, being out on the water all day, getting right up close to big world class racing yachts,
seeing how the crew work and how fast they travel. It was fascinating. There was also heaps of socialising in the evening, so my kind of fun! “We produced a half-hour special which has already aired, and have another one set to air nationally before the start of the Sydney to Hobart Race on Boxing Day. We also broadcast daily highlight packages. It was all a blast. “For another segment I went boating with the very delightful Emma Snowsill on the Gold Coast. I held her gold medal and that was a thrill. “I feel very fortunate that most of my work opportunities take me on the water, where I feel most at home. And as every mother knows it’s also good for your soul to work, and have some adult credibility. As much as we love our kids, to not be a slave for a day is also very healthy. At any given an opportunity, the family board their 19’ half-cabin on the Noosa River, teaching the kids to fish, but spending most of the time untangling their lines. Sally’s biggest thrill though is going sports-fishing off shore or battling fish on a lighter line from the beach. “The biggest fish I've caught was a 350 kg black marlin in Far North Queensland, but even in perfect conditions I'm not always lucky. Once off Mooloolaba, I caught two marlin and lost them both and the girl I was fishing with caught a bill fish and a snapper. All fish caught are tagged and released." Sally and Mark, who’s been renovating their home since November last year also relish a weekend reading the papers, catching up with Mark’s mates, local and Brisbane friends and family, plus dining at their favourite local Alegria:“We adore Glenn Bowman’s food, love the bar area and the fact we can walk there.” They also like to go overseas as happened several months ago: “We went to Koh Samui in Thailand and had a wonderful family holiday. Everyone just chilled out. It was divine. I was so taken with Thailand and the Thais. Our boys are good little travellers (mostly) although there’s still not a lot of joy in long haul flights with toddlers. They've been to Bali, England, Dubai, Singapore and many times to Whitsundays. I love watching them now as they march up to check-in counters at overseas airports saying hello, goodbye and thank-you in the local language. “I've fallen back in love with the flavours of Thai food, especially in hot weather when we eat lots of Asian salads with seafood. A memorable moment was our favourite Koh Samui beach hawker, an old weathered Thai granny who carted a portable galley along the beach every day with all the ingredients for the best green pawpaw salad I've ever eaten. It was made on the spot and the marinated chicken thigh was grilled over hot smoky coals. My mouth waters, just thinking about the simple, heavenly dish. . She continues to catch and cook seafood for viewers of Creek to Coast

Whether it’s serious equine pursuits or just horsing around at weekends, looking savvy in the saddle is now de rigueur.

Billabong-style range for the horsey-chick. Something young and fun, yet functional and comfortable - gear you can wear anywhere. A T-
Galloping success If you followed the equestrian events at the Olympic Games you’d be aware how conservative women riders are dressed. In fact there seems little change from centurys ago. But the scene is changing thanks to local lass and former international model Tammy Raine. Four years ago Tammy watched her daughter Cassie at a horse-training camp and noticed that the majority of girls were wearing surf labels yet their passion was horses not waves. “I searched the internet for horse-riding fashion labels and soon realized there was a lack of edgy clothing alternatives,” says 44 year-old Tammy, who besides 16 year-old Cassie, has sons Joshua 14 and Kyle 9. “I wanted to make a
shirt with jeans to go to the movies or wear with jodhpurs to the stables.” Giddyupgirl was borne in the garage at home and t-shirts with slogans such as the bestselling ‘Get Bucked’ and ‘Been There Jumped That’ were the first items she made, followed by polo and sweat shirts, tank tops, hoodies, caps, helmets, boots and chaps plus accessories such as charm bracelets, pencil cases and mobile phone arm bands. Despite initial set-backs, persistence paid off and inroads were forged in the UK, Hong Kong, Japan and every Australian state through stockists such as Horseland and Saddleworld. Giddyupgirl has successfully revolutionized the

traditional and conservative equestrian horse clothing industry with funky fashion alternatives. “There are lots of ‘technical’ equestrian garments on the market which are very suitable, popular and serve an important purpose but our market is mainly teens plus I’m also finding that mature women love them,” explains Tammy who has appointed a UK distributor, thus creating the need for a more substantial winter range. Designs to suit the very fussy European market hit the drawing board and Tammy appointed 23 yearold Alex Mearing, who went to school locally and worked in Sydney with fashion designer Melanie Cutfield. “The look has military over-tones with a funky, young twist,” explains Alex. ‘The range includes bomber and ski-style jackets, vests, scarves, t-shits and jodhpurs that are all practical yet different from anything else on the market. Colours are classic red, navy, black and off white and knitted fabrics such as angora have been used.” “We have just returned from Equitana in Melbourne, the biggest equestrian event in south-east Asia,” enthuses Tammy, who was delighted with the huge response from the trade and public. “We had to hide the winter samples, especially the jodhpurs with a mobile phone pocket just above the outside of the knee. We are the first clothing label to make a change to the classic design and what we had was literally walking off the stand.” Given the response at Equitana, giddyupgirl will be galloping out the doors at the British Equestrian Trade Association Show next February as Alex feverishly works away on the 09/10 ranges.

katan has authentic Balinese treatments and Elemis world renowned high performance facial products know for their award of ‘best spa product’ for the past three years, providing excellent results so you can see the difference in your skin. The Cleansing Ritual is a traditional beauty regime for Balinese woman that has been practiced in the palaces of Indonesia since the 17th century where the pursuits of beauty have long been a ritual designed to improve skin, cleanse the system and restore the soul in a ceremony of beauty. Katrina Thorpe from Ikatan explains the origins of the Balinese Cleansing Ritual “Balinese princesses have a body treatment every day for a month prior to being married or a special ceremonial celebration as it is believed to cleanse the body systems, give the skin clarity and a healthy glow”.

In Indonesia the women of Bali dedicate some time for a cleansing ritual; it is seen as a necessity to maintain health and beauty. Rituals are part of the cultural life in Bali, no matter how poor or wealthy a woman will include a body treatment, massage and facial care as part of body and wellbeing maintenance along with Jamu herbal cleansing drinks. This traditional experience of a Balinese ritual is available at Ikatan Spa in a superb package called the ‘Balinese Cleansing Ritual’ which offers 2 hours of pampering including a beautiful Hibiscus body scrub and wrap, body massage with subtle tropical oils followed by an Elemis facial. the perfect date.. AS WE ENTER THE FESTIVE SEASON...
T
he social opportunities are aplenty, the team at Wendells, the first Australianfounded web-based relationship service, share the following tips for successful dating over this special time of year. Wendells is different from other online relationship sites because it enables people to psychologically and scientifically ‘meet their match’ under the guidance of Professor Kim Halford, one of the world’s leading psychologists. Top 10 tips for successful dating over the festive season from Wendells BEFORE THE DATE: Don’t psyche yourself out. Your date has already agreed to meet up with you, so rest assured they are keen to get to know you. Relax! Chances are they are just as nervous as you. Channel your nervous energy into something positive and work on being the best you can be on the big day. Make a mental list of talking points should there be a lull in the conversation - no-one likes awkward silences so it’s good to have a back-up plan. DURING THE DATE: Be a good listener. Show your date you’re
interested and keen to learn more about them. Be honest - don’t lie about yourself. The best relationships are based on trust and honesty If you do get nervous, don’t ramble. Ask questions. These should be based around getting to know each other. Use the time to find out more about their values and opinions. Try to steer clear of touchy topics such as religion and politics. If telling stories about yourself, include references to friends and family as this indicates they are an important part of your life. Do not talk about old flames. They are in your past and they need to stay there. AFTER THE DATE: Be sure to follow up with a phone call as opposed to an email or SMS message. Say you had a great time, but don’t linger– it’s important to keep the conversation pointing to the future. Ask them when they might be available to meet for the next date, perhaps suggest taking a class such as a cooking class where you can work together towards a common goal. Remain confident. If a second date doesn’t eventuate, put it down to practice for when you meet ‘the one’. For further information visit www.wendells.com.au

Brewer brings all his influences (fine art, street art and photography) to bare in a stunning series of Ned Kellys reinvented for a new age. Sidney Nolan first painted the iconic Kelly series as a response to the depression, intending to give people something positive and hopeful to focus on. The synchronicity is not lost on us! The outlaw hero has always been at the heart of our nostalgic view of ourselves as Australians and battlers. Bourgeois to bucolic WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A CITY-SLICKER DECAMPS TO COOROY WITH A POET AND REPLACES LUNCHES AND LAUNCH PARTIES WITH CASTRATING STEERS AND RAISING CHOOKS? NOOSA STYLE WENT HUNTING FOR THE ANSWERS.
S
“We dust the Valiant off and go on dates to Noosaville to sit by the river and eat fish and chips...”
noosa 72 style
ea, tee and tree changing baby-boomers are nothing new but somewhat tame compared to Annette Hughes’ change. Diametrically opposed? Absolutely. The Brisbane trained art and English teacher fell head over heels in love with renowned art dealer Ray Hughes, who moved his gallery to Sydney in 1984 where their son Evan was born. Jolted by a failed marriage and financial pressures, she pursued book publishing, became a literary agent and studied part-time at university for an honours degree. Somehow she fitted in deal-making, launches, reading endless manuscripts, and wining and dining with the ‘coven’, the name she gave to her ‘drinking club of girlfriends’. Five years ago, she chucked it all in to move north with poet and creative collaborator Geoffrey Datson. The 160 acres of farming land and main house were established by Geoffrey’s late father Joe, 30 years ago. Their rustic green-roofed highceilinged Queenslander had been moved from nearby Cooran, to a spot just below the dirt road, straddled by a steep hill amid farming paraphernalia and, no doubt a few spiders and pythons. Geoffrey’s return to the family farm and his tractor skills especially, proved invaluable for Annette as her fingers greened for the sustainable organic gardening of veggies, sylviculture which is farming trees, getting up close to chooks, Fluffy the rooster and guinea fowl or ‘minipecks’ as Geoffrey calls them, and becoming acquainted with herding, castrating, feeding, whatever of Budget, Number One and their cattle mates. “I love the air, the 201 shades of green, and the fact that our place is protected at the end of a valley,” says Annette, who has also traded bling for gum boots and written a book Art Life Chooks (HarperCollins) about her experiences. “It’s also given me the opportunity to get to know animals - domestic and wild. I've never really had that pleasure, having always lived in the city. My son had a bird in a cage and briefly a dog. “We're down to half a dozen chooks in the coven, including Fluffy who has taken to running at Geoffrey whenever the afternoon grain is delivered. I think Fluffy is trying to con the girls into thinking that he is the hunter/gatherer as he wrests the grain from Geoffrey's grasp. The minipeck numbers are
One of Geoffrey’s hand made instruments
seriously depleted too. We're down to four males and one female who is very, very neurotic. Budget has picked up his game and is now producing many more bulls than heifer calves. We had a bit of drama last time when we took their fly tags off. Budget came-over all chicken, and wouldn't budge. Like a four year old hiding in his mother's skirts, he planted his large head firmly under the nearest cow and would not come out.” Despite all the work that’s required outdoors, Geoffrey occasionally seeks refuge in his studio underneath the house. “I work in a collage or sonic assemblage form,” the former 70s and 80s pop and rock exponent, who believes music is a vocation, says. “A fragment of sound catches my attention and I'll build it from there. The lyrics arrive fully formed, usually after sleeping on the theme for a few nights. I might internalise them whilst sitting on the tractor or doing other farm duties, perhaps rearranging a word or two, but generally there is little alteration from the initial form. If that sounds effortless, it is anything but. I do have an archaic bent in music theory, make many of my own instruments and am currently assembling a harpsichord for Annette.” Annette loves to cook using hand-picked produce from the garden and occasionally the couple’s quiet life is punctuated by visits to friends at Kin Kin and Amamoor. “We dust the Valiant off and go on dates to Noosaville to sit by the river and eat fish and chips, however my favourite is club night,” enthuses Annette. “Geoffrey fires up the turntables and plays his way though his eclectic collection of vinyl. We turn it up to eleven and if Fluffy doesn't like it, he can quit it with the 4am morning call. I think that's what I like best about the farm - no one can hear you party. “We recently went to Gympie, the Paris of the north coast, for lunch with friends, and in an idle moment in the mall, I spied a very beautiful pineapple ukulele. It was the same price as dinner for two, but as far as I could tell, much better value, so I splurged on it for Geoffrey who’s making instruments for his three string orchestra. The uke has four strings but I figured I only had to play three of them.” Annette was on a panel with Mark Seymour, the lead singer of 80s group Hunter and Collectors at the recent Byron Bay Writer's festival; she has joined the Sunshine Coast’s Regional Council’s RADF committee which looks after community arts funding; is planning another book and a PhD thesis; and has mostly fond memories of her former glam life in Sydney:“I do come over a little misty eyed when I think about that previous life, right in the heart of Sydney. It was non stop hot and cold running restaurants, film previews, book launches, long lunches and was glamorous, even on the red wine diet! But when I weigh that up against the endless car ballet of trying to find a park, or waking up to the sound of the five garbage contractors, one truck after the other, that would come to empty five different bins in the laneway, it somehow tarnishes my fondness.” Geoffrey concurs: “It was strange moving from a thriving warehouse/party scene 200 metres from Central Station, to the bucolic bliss of Cooroy, but it’s all worthwhile.”

he ever-shrinking bikini was a controversial garment, always skirting the edge of public taste and morals. In 1946 French car engineer Louis Reard came up with the revolutionary two-piece swimsuit after taking over his mother's lingerie company. He boasted his creation, which was named after the American nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, was "smaller than the smallest bathing suit", however he couldn't find girls to model it. That was until Parisian stripper Micheline Bernardini came along and became the world's first official bikini babe. In 1947 Melbourne-born bikini pioneer, Paula Stafford, who settled on the Gold Coast from Melbourne and began stitching the first Australian-made twopiece swimsuits said: “I wouldn't let them call it a bikini unless it had less than three inches, and to me, a bikini has strings.” In 1952 a Sydney beach inspector told Sydney model Ann Ferguson her bikini, designed by Stafford and quite modest by today’s standards, was a too brief. exciting new fabrics, colours and styles Bikinis helped Hollywood pin-up girls such as Jayne Mansfield, Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe to stardom and who can forget the memorable bikini film scene with sirens Brigitte Bardot and Raquel Welch; Ursula Andress' famous bikini accessorised with a knife belt in Dr No; and Walt Disney’s reluctance to allow Annette Funicello to don a bikini, brief enough to expose her navel. Perth model Jane Priest also hit news of the world when she planted a kiss on Prince Charles at Sydney’s Bondi Beach in 1979. Since the 1980s, Australian swimwear made an international fashion statement with brands like Speedo, Ken Done and Brian Rochford. In 1991, the Sydney based Zimmerman sisters Nicky and Simone focused their designs on terrestrial read-to-wear swimsuits and their bikinis became global hits selling in stores such as Harrods in the UK and Barneys in the US. And let’s not forget Tigerlily and the mass-market Seafolly. When it comes to retailing swimwear in resort towns, no one knows more than doyenne Josephine Matthews who opened her first business in Hastings Street Noosa Heads in 1980. Her hairdressing and beauty shop with racks of swimwear was in the former Pine Trees’ building. “In those days the atmosphere was very relaxed with tourists, celebrities and politicians enjoying the wonderful beach, laidback Hastings Street and famous restaurants such as Annabelles and Barrys on the Beach,” recalls Josephine, the former physical education teacher. “The bikinis and onepieces of my first label Covers, came in very simple styles and were predominantly taupe and black. Bikinis and even one pieces had more coverage than they do today and overall the fabrics were not as advanced and definitely not as colourful.” There’s no denying Josephine’s incredible knack for instantly recognizing a woman’s shape, advising the colours and style which best suit her figure and of course enhance her body. She says that purchasing a swimsuit is the hardest garment to buy:“For the past 13 years I have traveled to Europe, and studied the styles and fabrics presented by the top manufacturers. Watching European women at the beach is also a good barometer of what’s hot as they often wear three to four swimsuits per day, something Australian women never do. “I’ve just returned from the Paris Swimwear Show, where the 2009 collections were extremely bright with exciting new fabrics, colours and styles. The cover-ups are also different and complemented the swimwear.” Josephine loves the business so much she has stores in Mooloolaba and Port Douglas as well as Noosa, but she finds challenges are constant.“It’s not just the ever-changing styles, it’s also women’s bodies. Today’s women have bigger breasts, so it’s important they wear suitable styles. Buying ‘separates’, a lady can have a bigger top size with a smaller bottom, thus giving the required balance.” Apart from her own label, Josephine’s stores stock Aussie brands Lisa Ho, Zimmerman, Ginger & Smart, Fleur Wood, Anna & Boy and other stunners are imported from France, Italy, Canada, Hungary and Spain. Josephine loves visiting Dubai with husband Peter Watts however she maintains a strong affinity with water. Noosa’s National Park and beach plus being involved with surf life saving years ago hold extra-special memories as does swimming with Minki whales but currently the Barrier Reef, Daintree and Atherton Tableland top her fave’s list.

Top tips for travelling while pregnant... PLANNING A WHITE WATER RAFTING ADVENTURE IN THE GRAND CANYON IN YOUR FINAL TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY MIGHT BE CONSIDERED OVERLY AMBITIOUS, BUT IF YOU ARE HEALTHY, WELL-ORGANISED AND DETERMINED, PREGNANCY SHOULD NOT BE A BARRIER TO TRAVEL.
A
ccording one of Australia’s most respected travel health care specialists Dr. Deborah Mills, you can realise your dream of a romantic rendez vous in Paris with only your partner for example – in fact, it may be the last chance to travel unfettered! “There are always certain factors to consider for travelling safely but there are myths in circulation too. “Travel in pressurised aircraft is unlikely to endanger the growing child in the early stages of pregnancy, although, the mother will have a slightly increased risk of deep vein thrombosis. To avoid this, book an aisle seat on the plane, wear compression stockings during long journeys, and buckle your seatbelt low around the pelvis. “The middle trimester is the best time to travel. After the first third, the risk of miscarriage is low and morning sickness is usually over. In the last trimester, you may have a big stomach and feel uncomfortable. You may also need an afternoon nap and your feet may swell quite considerably during air travel. Airlines generally refuse to carry women after 36 weeks in case they go into labour. Travel insurance will usually not cover pregnancyrelated problems in the last trimester. Preferably, travel with a companion,” she said. Ideally, discuss your destination with a doctor before plans are finalised. Pregnant travellers can safely visit many places - but travel to malarious areas is not recommended. “Unfortunately a pregnant woman is twice as likely to be bitten by mosquitoes as her non-pregnant counterpart due to increased heat production and increased release of volatile substances from the skin surface. “Malaria is more serious in pregnant women and can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, and even maternal death. Anti-malaria tablets can cause side effects if taken during pregnancy so best discuss with your doctor first. ‘The standard of local medical care should also be taken into account. Visiting countries with unreliable medical services may spell disaster if pregnancy complications develop,” she said. Travel in altitudes above 4,000m is not recommended in pregnancy. Pregnant travellers visiting high altitude areas for more than two days need specialised travel health advice. Pregnant travellers should also avoid scuba diving, extreme physical exertion and hot saunas. As a pioneer within the field, Dr Deborah Mills of Dr Deb’s Travel Health Care, has practiced in travel medicine for 20 years. She is also the author of Australia’s most popular medical travel book ‘Travelling Well’ - which is in its fourteenth edition and has 125,000 copies in print. MUSIC IN YOUR HOUSE.
W
hen it comes to playing music, we believe all rooms should be created equal. That’s why you can put ZonePlayers in absolutely any room where you want music — either connected directly to speakers or to your home theatre and stereo system. With Sonos, no room is off-limits and you can add music to practically any number of rooms: the bedroom, the backyard, even the bathroom. Music in your hands. Sonos puts the control of all your music and all your rooms right where it should be — in your hands. Create a playlist to cook by. Browse your entire collection or use search to find your favourites. Tune in to a radio station halfway round the world. Share the Controller with friends. But be prepared, because once they get their hands on it, they’ll have a hard time letting go. Spread the music. The Sonos Controller gives you instant access to all your music and all your rooms. You can turn off the upstairs music from downstairs or change the song in the kitchen from the den. That’s because every Controller works wirelessly — no aiming required. And you can have as many Controllers as you want. With the Controller in hand you can choose a song or change it, use search to find your favourites, and quickly link and unlink zones to play
the same song in every room or different songs in different rooms. Play any song. In any room. From anywhere. Sonos® is the first and only digital music system that lets you play all your digital music, all over your house—and control it all from the palm of your hand. Best of all, you don't need a PC in every room, a music server or a wireless network. Just a Sonos ZonePlayer™ and speakers in the rooms of your choice and a Sonos Controller in hand to access all your digital music, no matter where it's stored— on your PC, Mac or Network Attached Storage box. Sonos Bundle 150 The majority of our customers get started with a Sonos Bundle because it's the easiest and most cost-effective way to experience the thrill of wireless multi-room music. The bundle includes two Sonos ZonePlayers and a handheld Sonos Controller. Plus, every ZonePlayer includes Desktop Controller software so you can control all your music and all your rooms from any desktop or laptop computer. When you want more rooms of music, more control or both, simply add ZonePlayers and Controllers to your heart's content. Music from every source imaginable. Sonos plays it all — music from your personal collection stored on your computer, thousands of free Internet radio stations, and music services that let you stream and download their vast collections of songs from

the Internet to the rooms of your choice. Sonos gives you the freedom to listen to whatever you want, wherever you want. Play a classic album from your music collection in the kitchen and the living room. Listen to an Internet radio station in your bedroom that is streaming live from another continent. Whatever you’re into, rock or rap, new age or golden oldies, Sonos gives you instant and endless music gratification. Setup that's out-of-the-box simple. When it comes to setting up your Sonos system, we live by the age-old adage keep it simple. You don’t need to be a tech genius or a wireless expert. You don’t have to break through walls or hire someone to re-wire your house. And you don’t need to know what hex keys and SSID are. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection, a router and two fingers so you can push the buttons on the front of every ZonePlayer. When you want to expand, just add more ZonePlayers and Controllers and get those fingers ready. Check out the diagrams below to see just how easy Sonos setup really is.

ith 20m of water frontage this Paul Clout-designed property makes the most of its prime position on the canal in the Noosa Waters estate at Noosaville. Stretching over two levels and 516sqm on a 713sqm block the house has a northern aspect and a stunning pool that doubles as a water feature and provides a calming centrepiece. With curved, moveable walls, and extraordinary use of timber and glass, Clout has created a house where every wall is a feature, and even the floors offer a surprise. The upper level hallway provides glimpses underfoot through opaque glass portholes to the level below. The house offers water views from the vast majority of rooms and, on the lower level, includes four entertaining areas, including a vast kitchen with dine-in facilities, an outdoor barbecue area with its own outdoor kitchen facilities and two lounges. Soaring timber ceilings, stylish wooden ceiling fans and doors that peel back to allow the elements in, create an open and airy living space that could best be described as a series of outdoor pavilions joined by stylish walkways and flexible walls. with Hansa and Kohler fitouts, New Guinea rosewood cabinetry, fossil limestone and polished travertine provide a strong sense of cohesion complemented by bleached flooded gum timber floors and carpeted retreats. For the busy work-at-home buyer the house includes a built-in home office with its own private front entrance. An ensuited bedroom by the pool on the lower level doubles as a media room, while the double garage and laundry are comfortably accessed from the entrance to the house and offer carefully thought out nooks and crannies for storage. The curved timber staircase to the upper level passes portholes that frame a tropical garden, and spills out to a wide hallway that seems to be suspended in mid-air. The main bedroom includes a massive ensuite complete with a sauna/shower area overlooking the water. Two other bedrooms, both with ensuites, are on the upper level, with a long sun gallery that links them together. Smart-wired throughout, the house is airconditioned and includes three phase power, a walk-in pantry, Miele kitchen appliances and a Jennair Icemaker refrigerator. A Jet-master fireplace nestled into an artistic stone surround provides a feature in the lounge room, which also includes a built-in library for storing favourite books accumulated over the years.
From the moment you walk through the giant Syrian cedar pivotal door that provides the entrance statement to this luxurious property it becomes clear that it is a house that is far from ordinary. In our unique style... when in doubt... a bit of all white WHETHER INDOORS OR OUT, A FUNKY BEACH HOUSE OR A SWANKY COASTAL-STYLE WATER-FRONT, WHITE IS A WINNER. White’s trendiness extends in all areas of life, be it fashion, accessories, high-tech or cars. Everything shines in the colour of innocence. The iPod has sold a million times and the non-colour began its triumphant climb. In Germany alone 70 per cent more white cars were sold last year than in the previous year and the trend is upwards. In the furniture sector white is omnipresent; whether it is tables, chairs or cupboards, white is the dominant colour as well. White is above all associated with lightness and clarity and is regarded as timeless and easily combinable, with other colours or tone on tone with muted shades of white and beige, and also with different material combinations. The opposing trend to the colour white consists of bright, shining colours. White tiles and white-washed or blindingly white marine-grade painted floor boards can be space-enhancing, light reflecting and shriek of pared-back luxe. However if you have dog that sheds dark fur, think again unless you want to sweep the floors daily. They may also come at a price. With a white backdrop, tired shabby furniture is highlighted rather than disguised and continuing the white-look on the walls and ceilings, certainly opens up a space but more thought needs to be given to additional furniture in colours, fabrics and materials that complement the house style, lighting and window treatments. For a coastal look, consider bringing the outdoors in with a long timber dining table in warm tones, rattan and bamboo furniture, turquoise and stone-coloured fabrics, perhaps a splash of orange on cushions on a day bed, sofas in sea-green easy-care mock suede or perhaps daring florals with big, plump feather pillows that invite sinking into, and are positioned to take full advantage of the view. An exciting combo could be using black coffee tables, an outsized mirror in silvery metal, an animal print in a throw or on a pillow and pieces of driftwood as accessories. Avoid the all-white look unless you fancy living in a laboratory.

The 14th annual Ginger Flower Festival bursts into bloom at Ya n d i n a ’ s Ginger Factory from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 J a n u a r y, 2009. Check out: w w w. b u d e r i m g i n g e r. c o m for the program of events.
Heliconias and gingers add an exotic and dramatic touch to sub-tropical gardens.
O
ver 120 gingers in the zingiberaceae family are treasured as edible types and renowned for having fabulous flowerheads, correctly termed as "bracts". They range in colour from soft pink to vibrant yellows and reds, have succulent, aromatic, knobbly rhizomes with cane-like stems, wrapped in long, slender leaves. They are closely related to the banana plant. Also related are over 400 heliconia species from the heliconiaceae family plus thousands of hybrids and cultivars. Bold, extravagant flowers and foliage are hallmarks and they are the ultimate in tropical abundance. “Heliconias can be grown in pots or in the narrowest of garden beds,” John Scomparin from Outside Noosa explains, adding they are low maintenance provided they are well mulched. “In large garden beds they are very impressive if mass planted and with heights ranging from 400mm to a towering six metres, layering is an excellent option. Mixing and matching colours is also effective. “My favourites include the blue ginger with its purple/blue bracts. It grows to about two metres high, flowers in autumn and is the perfect plant for moist, shady spots. Heliconia rostrata grows to about 1.8 metres high and has dramatic, hanging lobster claw-like flowers that hang down in a startling display of red, green and yellow ‘necklaces’. Red Christmas, a shorter variety with darker green foliage, is complemented by red flowers and the golden torch is a taller variety, with lime green foliage and as the name suggest, has golden flowers.” Rhizomes can be lifted after a couple of years and separated to propagate more plants. Many of the flowers on the beehive gingers emerge from stems directly from it. The real flowers are tiny and protected by bracts. A heady fragranced variety is the lemon scented beehive. Requirements for healthy plants are simple: Fertile, well-drained soil, warm, humid temperatures and adequate water. They do not like frosts. Heavy mulching is recommended to prevent the soil from drying out and to enhance the organic matter.

ustralian homes, in particular within our sub tropical climate of Queensland have forever been inspired by the beauty and sureness of Bali styled landscape and design. The subtle use of open spaces, small or large scaled areas can be effectively designed to incorporate the tranquillity of a water feature, rock wall, feature pond, or a distinctive hand-crafted pot strategically placed. Tired of looking at that non-descript rendered wall? Put some life into it by adding a feature wall of stone. We have 20 varieties of stack stone to choose from, and yes, you can do it yourself. Oceanic Imports prides itself on hand selected statues, pots and water features - to add that special effect and create an ambience of tranquillity. Elizabeth WatsonBrown at her own home
Elizabeth Watson-Brown’s creations are out of the box.
T
he vision of creating building environments that co-exist harmoniously with the climate and vegetation and architecture, plus choreographing space and light to respond completely to the landscape, were executed to the letter when the Elizabeth Watson–Brown-designed Library House was completed. “Elysium Noosa’s carefully designed houses and landscapes create the framework for a life lived in harmony with nature and in community,” says Elizabeth who describes her style as ‘contemporary humanist’. “Our company’s physical flexibility and considered spatial design also creates important social flexibility, accommodating different modes of living and balancing community with privacy, extrovert with the intimate.” Conceived by developer David Pearson, Elysium is a development next to Noosa Springs, where houses with multimillion dollar price tags, designed by the most respected Australian architects, sit cheek by jowl. David asked 12 firms to design houses that could be bought off the plan and are works of art. “Elysium was different because there were no real clients,” explains Brisbane-based Elizabeth, whose awards have been numerous and significant projects have included a house in South Africa, St Peter Lutheran College chapel refurbishment and the Binna Burra Forest Village tourist facility and eco community. “We did not know the future inhabitants so a collaborative process was not possible. “We had six houses to design, so made up ‘imaginary clients, a bit like imaginary friends, to help inspire us. For example, we imagined six different types of people: entertainers, readers/travelers, collectors, sporties, meditation/yoga guys, and crafts-people. This provided the ‘desires’ and ‘aspirations’ and the
rounding out of human personalities that exist with real clients. It was a great overlay to the spatial brief provided by Elysium.” The Library House was developed for a cultured and learned person who has collected lots of things in their travels so the elevated library has an expanse of shelves, the gallery space ‘floats’ above the living room and a desk looks over the garden. “The space really comes into its own at night when the garden lighting is on,” says Elizabeth adding that the living room is a double storey cube of black steel girders, topped with glass. “The girders are an industrial concept and make the place strong.” A spa bath in the main bedroom seems to be suspended over the living room, there’s heaps of natural light and metal mesh screens on the outside give privacy. A different style of architecture was adopted for Elizabeth’s own house in St Lucia, near the river. It was designed with her husband, Associate Professor Peter Skinner who’s an academic architect and teaches at the University of Queensland.“It was built for our family of four when our two sons were in their teens,” Elizabeth recalls, “and is a very simple, contemporary house on a small site which is dominated by huge sub-tropical trees, the star being a very sculptural poinciana. It has been described by an architectural writer as a ‘place for languid contemplation’, which I like. It is an experiment in what could be termed a sub-tropical modernism, a passive climatic design choreographing and calibrating light, shade, breezes, views, engagement with landscape, and transmutability both physical and social. It is modest in size, program and material use, but spatially evocative.” Elizabeth is passionate about every project “in which there is a synergy with the clients, a conversation, a shared vision, and a great creative collaborative process which results in a place which they can use/inhabit which improves their lives.”

he quiet and peaceful residential enclave set on the shores of Lake Doonella is setting a new standard for the region, with its natural setting and attractive homes. Among the first residents, are Dearne and Raymond Paradies and their four children, who recently made the move from Sunrise Beach to their brand new home at Doonella Noosa. The Doonella Noosa community offers easy access to both Noosa and Brisbane, yet is located amid an environmental reserve offering seclusion from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It is also setting new standards for sustainability with Stockland recently opening the Sunshine Coast’s first sustainable demonstration home in the community. Already more than one thousand people have inspected Sustainable Home Doonella Noosa since it was launched in September to showcase the latest in building and design technology for the environment and our changing lifestyles. Stockland’s Sunshine Coast Regional Manager, Nick Wellwood, said the Doonella Noosa community and its sustainable home provided a genuine blueprint for sustainable living. "The people who are looking at this home are finding tangible ways to make changes in their own designs and building plans," Mr Wellwood said. "This is a unique project and one which takes another step towards building responsibly and respectfully for our future with both the environment and lifestyle in mind.’’
“nature and all the wildlife’’, Keira, 3, says it’s “all the space to run and play safely”, and Sean, 2, rates “the playground’’ as number one. The move to Doonella Noosa represented a real lifestyle change for the Paradies family, who had originally been considering a move to acreage. “In the end we thought acreage would be just too far to the beach,’’ said Dearne. “Here, we are literally 10 minutes to Hastings Street, we have the school right next door and our block backs directly on bushland. “When we go on the walk around the lake it actually feels like we are living on 10 acres. “We would really recommend Doonella Noosa as a place to live – there are more blocks available and I would really love to grab another one.’’ Dearne said her four children were particularly excited about moving into their new community. “They have actually commented that at our old home they would just come home from school and sit inside but here they go straight outside and enjoy themselves,’’ she said.“It’s a great peaceful place to relax after work and raise your family.’’ For further information visit the on-site land sales and information centre located on Sea Eagle Drive, Doonella Noosa. Sustainable Home Doonella Noosa is open for inspection seven days a week from 11am to 5pm and features a range of great information about sustainable housing practices.

Currently selling off the plan, the development is a joint venture project by Leighton Properties and the Macquarie Group of Companies. Celebrating all that is good about Noosa, the 197 luxurious hotel rooms, suites, lavish villas and penthouses at the northern end of Hastings Street offer sprawling views of Laguna Bay stretching from Little Cove down to Double Island Point. Hotel rooms and suites will look directly to the fringing sub-tropical rainforests of Noosa Hill. Internationally renowned architect John Mainwaring has designed the development. In keeping with the special nature of Viridian’s location, the architecture features a natural colour palette, high quality materials and ecosensitive design principles. Lucky resort guests and owners will have access to a luxurious day spa, three swimming pools, a gymnasium, restaurants, a licensed bar, 24 hour room service and extensive conference and meeting facilities. Tom Offermann, Director of Offermann Real Estate, who is marketing the Viridian Beach Villas on Little Hastings Street, explains the attraction of Viridian: “The Viridian project is located in one of the best addresses in Australia, literally bordered by Noosa’s Main Beach, the Noosa National Park and what we call ‘Little Hastings Street’ off Hastings Street in Noosa Heads” he said. “Owners can choose to enjoy their villa for personal holiday use or release it back for on-site or external holiday rental management." For future visitors to Noosa and those wishing to purchase their piece of the luxury property, the 20 year wait for a new five star resort in Noosa is almost over.

nspired by Queensland’s spectacular environments and natural wonders, Habitus - Habitat presents artists’ extraordinary interpretations of a diverse range of environments, from the world’s largest sand island to tropical rainforests. The exhibition, which opens at the Noosa Regional Gallery on the 21 November is being toured by Museum and Gallery Services Queensland (M&GSQ) and formally opened by Beth Jackson, the curator of the exhibition. Habitus - Habitat features a selection of commissioned works and photographic documentation of temporary ephemeral works created on location during a series of six artist residencies, together with artworks
produced as part of a linked regional workshop program. Noosa Regional Gallery Director, Christine Ballinger says “The exhibition further cements the Gallery’s commitment to and reputation for presenting innovative art-in-nature programs.” Habitus - Habitat is as much about artmaking processes, about dialogue between artists and artworks as it is about unique artistic expressions. There is an unfolding quality to the exhibition that becomes apparent when the threads of the many individual responses and journeys emerge, overlap, entwine and intersect with one another. The tour brings together each of the Great Walks residencies so that we can marvel at this intensifying resonance and increases the reach of the original program, providing a catalyst for further art and environment projects. Collectable Indigenous artist sends work to Putipula Gallery Its a long way from the small Aboriginal community of Amata (about 500 km south west of Alice Springs), but the work of one of this countrys most sought-after Indigenous artists, Ruby Tjangawa Williamson, has made its way to Noosa Junction. The community art centre that Ruby paints for is based at the foot of the Musgrave Ranges in the APY (Anangu Pitjantatjara Yankunyjatjara) Lands in South Australias far north west. Ruby only started painting in 2000 but by 2005 was attracting international attention with her unique style that combines serious story telling with modern motifs of sheer vibrancy. R Rubys style is constantly emerging, and although it contains classic iconography of dotting and wira walka (parallel arc design) it has a refreshingly new take on contemporary indigenous art. You can now see some of the highly collectable works of Ruby Williamson and many more emerging and affordable indigenous artists at Putipula Gallery, 27 Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Junction. Polly Kngale
detail of painting by Polly Kngale
POLLY KNGALE circa.1920 Polly kngale is a very old traditional woman, living at Camel Camp on Utopia with her extended family . She began her artistic career in batik in the early 1970's, like many of the women on Utopia, before venturing into painting with acrylic paints on canvas. Polly is related to the famous Emily Kngwarreye with whom she shares the same country and stories. Polly, also is a senior custodian of the Bush Plum Dreaming. This fruit thrives over the vast flood-out area of the Sandover River, which runs through Utopia, and will run a bunker after a big storm. The various colours that Polly uses to layer the story , represent the fruit through all its many stages of development. This completes her expression of place and its significance to her. You can see some of Polly's beautiful work at Netanya Resort in Hasting Street, during the Honey Ant Gallery Exhibition 3rd to 11th Jan.

Des Rolph
The Gallery Eumundi THE HIGHLIGHT FOR JANUARY IN THE GALLERY WILL BE AN EXHIBITION OF WORKS BY AUSTRALIAN ARTIST, DES ROLPH.
D
es has been represented by the gallery for a number of years, and this is the first time that she will be presenting a solo exhibition. Her work is truly beautiful and is now highly sought after by collectors, often wishing to preview her work as it promptly leaves the studio. With a growing list of solo shows behind her throughout Australia, Des Rolph's major paintings now command prices up to $10,000. This exhibition offers you the opportunity to invest in quality pieces, including small original drawings at very affordable prices. The Australian landscape and its spirituality is the main focus for her work. She is an artist who has the rare ability to successfully interplay the figure and the animal within the landscape, weaving stories of mystery and intrigue. To best describe her work, one would say that the paintings are evocative, illuminating and lyrical, thoughtful in their narrative and forever interesting to live with. Highlights in her career have included her being a finalist in several of the Nation's most prestigious prizes, eg. The Heysen Prize for Australian Landscape, the Waltzing Matilda Art Prize, and the Cromwell Art Prize. She is currently working on a portrait of Catherine Freeman for the Archibald Prize, after developing a keen interest in painting about Indigenous women within the landscape. She met with Ms Freeman in July this year for sittings in her home, but is keen to take the time to produce a thoughtful work, and is hoping to have the work finished for display in her January exhibition.
The exhibition entitled, The Ethereal Landscape, will focus upon the connection that exists between the human, the animal and the ubiquitous Australian landscape in which they both inhabit. These relationships form what is spiritually Australian, and tell a story about a truly ancient land.

Your Guide to Contemporary Aboriginal Art…
B
ouncing along rough, sandy tracks in the NT’s Central Desert may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but for Jan Sinclair of Jive Art on Hastings Street, it’s heaven. It’s in these remote locations that Jan learns about and collects paintings by Aboriginal artists. Last year she introduced a small selection of works to her gallery which sold quickly. She says: “The bold graphics in Aboriginal art are right at home in any contemporary environment or art collection”. The proof is visible at Jive where Aboriginal art hangs surrounded by other vibrant contemporary paintings and sculpture. Jan meets many artists on her trips and acquires works through remote Aboriginal owned and community art centers, as well as from artists who paint independently. ‘Described as the last great art movement of the 20th Century, it is exciting to learn more about this ancient culture’ says Jan. ‘It is a real adventure to familiarise yourself with the huge diversity of work that makes up this wonderful art movement’. She acknowledges there is a lot to learn about Aboriginal societies and their social structures, along with the 80 or so art producing regions, and the associated Dreamings but says there are a few steps to simplifying the process: read a good book on the subject; spend time in galleries viewing works and

asking questions; focus on the work from a single region and include more regions as your knowledge grows. Jive specializes in Aboriginal work that is strong, vibrant and graphically appealing. Even if you think you ‘don’t like’ Aboriginal art, most people will Leemoo Parreejt by Woogarroong find something to connect with in the works at Jive – be it the Dreaming or the striking decorative quality, or both. Works range in price from $550 to many thousands and a copy of the book Jan recommends most -McCulloch’s new edition of ‘Contemporary Aboriginal Art – the Complete Guide’ – is free with each purchase. Desert Rain Gallery - Tewantin IT IS TIME FOR THE SEASON OF GIVING AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE SOMETHING UNIQUELY AUSTRALIAN, IS A RARE GIFT IN OUR MODERN WORLD. Indigenous Art and Crafts gives you the chance to do just that. The current market of contemporary high quality textiles, wood sculpture, canvas, prints and furnishings provide an ever increasing range of treasures for all budgets, while giving a sense of meaning and pleasure to – the gift of giving. Allowing us to engage with the culture traditions of the first Australians, art and crafts have lead us to discover a culture rich in design and diverse in styles. Across the Australian continent, Indigenous artists are celebrating their heritage and maintaining relationships through art practice and ceremony. In the central desert these summer months are a time of large ceremonial gatherings. Roads become impassable for some members of the tribal groups until the ceremonial journey of others have passed. We are also preparing for a different type of gathering, but it is one that will also bring people together from different parts of country, combined with ritual and spiritual significance and encompasses celebrations in it’s myriad of forms. We would like to wish everyone a fabulous festive season .Following from the sale and over the summer festive season, works by such luminaries as Ningura Napurrula; Walangkura Napanangka, Abie Loy and the Pwerle sisters will be exhibiting as the Desert Rain gallery on the Noosa Marina, a short ferry ride or by car, up the Noosa river.
Amelia Farrugia Artist Those acquainted with Amelia Farrugia's artworks will be familiar with her very popular abstracts and landscapes. Warm, earthy, highly textured pieces are her trademark. But lately she has been exploring the cooler sector of her palette. "The emotion of colour intrigues me. A colour like red that I am naturally drawn to, and features often in my works, is a highly emotive colour. People’s perception and feel for it vary greatly. Lately I have really enjoyed working with cooler blue's and aqua's, creating paintings with a more serene, coastal feel." Amelia in conjunction with her husband Tim are the team behind i4art. They provide a full range of artworks ready to purchase and hang. As well as a full consultation service, in which any of your specific needs can be catered for. This is one of Amelia’s great passions, creating unique and personal piece that fully reflects a person’s needs and style. Amelia derives a great amount of pleasure in creating the perfect piece for a client, a pleasure only outweighed by the client themselves. Just a colour swatch or piece of fabric can inspire her creativity, and a painting can then be designed that will reflect her style, and best fulfill your requirements. A private viewing can be arranged, and we offer a in-home consultation service.

Thrusting up the windows, ale in hand, there’s a much-needed cool breeze plus it’s now much easier when rounding the bends to check out 802’s chimney and billowing smoke or its rear carriages. Into the scenic Mary Valley where the railway line negotiates the steep slopes of the Mary River, there are spectacular views and evidence of thriving rural communities. Grazing dairy and beef cattle and a tapestry of pineapple, macadamia and vegetable farms, seem to whiz by. What was a gentle cha-kung cha-kung rhythm, has now reached a crescendo and been replaced by sounds of creaking wood and clanking over tracks. Is this when train buffs sigh and say this all part of the romanticism of rail travel? Amamoor is home to the Gympie Muster and after a brief stop at the fully restored station, a squiz at the arts and crafts that are reminiscent of yesteryear, passengers gawk as the locomotive and fire truck go into turn around mode. ith its hanging baskets of flowers and dinky refreshment room, the Gympie Railway Station opened in 1913. It replaced the original Gympie Station building that served Gympie from the 1870s and is a living tribute to Gympie and Cooloola's rail heritage. In charge of the eight driving wheeled, 80 tonne locomotive, built in the UK by Armstrong Whitworth at a cost of 5013 pounds and shipped to Brisbane in 1927 is John, a steam train driver since 1959. He is ably assisted by fireman Archie. The station master calls “all aboard” and rings the brass bell as the steam whistle shrieks. Number 802 pulls out of the station past the old Queenslander-style Railway Hotel, masses of brilliantly coloured jacaranda trees, sheds and outhouses swathed in bougainvillea, through the Gympie burbs and onto what was considered the alternative railway to the coastal line from Brisbane in 1884/85. The Rattler’s carriages date from 1909 and all have been built at workshops in Ipswich. The Club car with its bar, coffee tables and comfy tub chairs was originally built as a Pullman-type sleeper with curtained berths down each side and a central aisle. When delivered to the workshop, all that could be salvaged was the underframe and bogies. From the Deep Creek bridge, which is thirty metres above the creek bed, evidence can be seen

a ferry bright idea... What was your first foray into boat building? I restored an old Brisbane River ferry as well as a wreck from the Gold Coast. The ferry became part of a tour business and the wreck turned into a beautiful but noisy nightclub vessel, both operating out of Mooloolaba. After selling them in the mid 90s I sailed the Pacific on a yacht I’d bought in Florida. What an eye-opener. Robyn met me in Tahiti in the middle of it all and we had a big think about the next stage of our lives I really wanted would to build a riverboat from scratch. Slow and gentle, traditional in style, a shallow draft yet comfortable. Early drawings became the model for the architect and not long after, a friend helped me build the Riverlight, in an old shed at Petrie Creek. It was a very enjoyable experience although limited by funds, so we built most of the upper-works by eye as we went along. By September 1998 we had a vessel ready to go. Noosa was the obvious place for the business and when the Noosa Marina was relaunched, it became a viable proposition. Riverlight was named after the late Maisie Massoud’s family boat which was built in 1915 and Miss Tewantin after the Parkyn family boat. Where do you live? Hilton Esplanade
Noosaville was a great spot. Good to have a quiet drink with friends on the verandah and just a stroll across the bridge to work at Noosa Marina. It was tough on Robyn (Willey) who is the director of Brisbanebased corporate communications company, Bayly Willey Holt, so we sold in 2003 and moved to Mooloolaba, opposite the Yacht club, a stroll along the river to Buddina Beach and to Point Cartwright with its fantastic views all the way to Noosa. How do you enjoy your spare time? Rob and I have a couple of boats other than the ferries. Miss Molly is a beautiful little fibreglass dory which we use to visit friends around the harbour plus we have an old 40’ motorboat Willynilly which we take on an annual pilgrimage to Airlie for Raceweek, and catch up with race-mad yachtie mates. We also enjoy a motorbike ride to the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club for a cold beer, a late afternoon lunch at Rickys and a glass of sauv blanc on the top deck of the Riverlight really does it for us. An early morning ski and swim with my paddling mates keeps me fit. Oh and did I mention Jimmy Buffett? Explain the success of Noosa Ferry
Cruises? : What started as a one boat operation became two ferries with three return trips per day and additional services in the holidays. We have eleven employees and carry over 60,000 passengers annually, which is more than six times our first year's patronage. We also do corporate work for hotels such as the Sheraton and Hyatt however what gives me the most pleasure is the different ways passengers use the ferry: It’s not unusual to see people meet onboard with a cheese platter and their favourite tipple; blokes have popped the question; a bunch of ‘hens’ and bride-tohead for mayhem in Hastings Street; surprise weddings on the river sand islands; and a mystery tour to Honeymoon Island at the top of Lake Cooroibah to watch a performance by a ‘man-sized’ crow playing a double bass as a nymph danced to the recorded sound of a cicada. What do you love most about the Noosa River? It gives so much joy to everyone from children playing in the shallows, yachties racing, people fishing from the jetties or picnickers in old put-puts heading downstream. It’s an asset to the Noosa and visitors love it.

no luggage woes in Aspen at the start of the snow season...
noosa 120 style
A
World Cup event opened the ski season, under a blanket of moderate snowfalls in Aspen, Colorado (USA) recently. Aspen Mountain played host to the fastest women in the world, competing in two days of FIS World Cup Racing disciplines of Slalom and Giant Slalom. The competitive field included most of the American Olympic team including gold medalist Julia Mancuso, as well as others including Lindsay Vonn, Resi Steigler, Caroline Lalive, Kaylin Richardson and Stacey Cook. We may not all be that athletic, but we can all dream. Skiing has a loyal following around the world, and I'm told that if you can surf or skate, then it's probably a sport for you.
So if you find that you need a break from the hot Australian summer this year, and would like to take advantage of a brilliant skiing experience in Aspen, now is the time to check out the deals on offer at your local travel agent's office. One Aspen company has even come up with a novel way to get your luggage there, and ensure that you spend all the time possible on the slopes. We all know that one of the worst things about travelling on a long-haul holiday with multiple destinations is lugging your bags around. Or even worse, is getting to your destination only for your luggage to turn up three days later. A new trend in Aspen Colorado is to actually ship your luggage in advance of your arrival. Stay Aspen Snowmass (www.stayaspensnowmass.com) has teamed up with UPS to create Aspen/Snowmass Luggage Express to meet the needs of skiers and snowboarders visiting the resort, in the face of new baggage fees now being imposed by the airlines. Guests can save from $US50 to $US300 depending on the number of bags being checked, the weight of the bags, and where they are being shipped from, all while avoiding the inconvenience of traveling to the airport with multiple bags. Regular visitors to Aspen/Snowmass will also appreciate the peace-of-mind that comes with knowing their gear is already waiting for them at their final destination. "Working with UPS we have been able to put together a program that maximises convenience and savings for guests who wish to ship their gear prior to their arrival," said Bill Tomcich, president Stay Aspen Snowmass. "With airline fees rising, and other shipping services charging more than double the rate in some cases, we believe we have created a program that will improve our guest's arrival experience." The service is only available within America - but provides a useful option for travelers who may be combining their ski holiday with city visits, and who don’t want to take their ski gear with them on their entire holiday. For more information or to book packages, contact Stay Aspen Snowmass at http://www.stayaspensnowmass.com/ Good deals are still available to visit Aspen this season. Travelplan has seven night packages including seven nights of accommodation at the Mountain Chalet in Aspen including breakfast and a six day ski pass (for all four mountains of Aspen/Snowmass) from $1749 per person. MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle is summoned to a meeting with her boss Charles Wetherby, head of the Counter-Espionage Branch following the receipt of alarming intelligence. A Middle East peace conference is planned to take place at Gleneagles in Scotland and several heads of state will attend. The Syrians have learned that two individuals are mounting an operation to disrupt the conference in a way designed to be spectacular, laying the blame at Syria’s door. The source claims that Syrian Intelligence will act against the pair, presumably by killing them. No one knows who they are or what they are planning to do. Is it all a carefully laid trail of misinformation? It is Liz’s job to find out. The future of the Middle East is at stake but the real threat is far greater than she or anyone else could have imagined.
by Michael Connelly (Allen & Unwin RRP $32.95) A bullet speaks louder than words when master crime writer Connelly teams his two best characters Lincoln lawyer Mickey Haller and LAPD Detective Harry Bosch team up in totally addictive thriller. Things are finally looking up for defence attorney Haller. After two years of wrong turns, he is back in the courtroom. When Hollywood lawyer Jerry Vincent is murdered, Haller inherits his biggest case yet: the defense of Walter Elliott, a prominent studio executive accused of murdering his wife and her lover. But as Haller prepares for the case that could launch him into the big time, he learns that Vincent's killer may be coming for him next. Enter Harry Bosch. Determined to find Vincent's killer, he is not opposed to using Haller as bait.
All That Happened at Number 26 by Denise Scott (Hardie Grant RRP $29.95) When Denise Scott moved into ramshackle number twenty-six, with husband, his circus equipment, a king-sized futon sans base, a Ventolin inhaler no savings and a newborn baby her husband lost his eyebrows, the circus equipment multiplied, the futon went mouldy, the Ventolin ran out, another baby was added and further savings were out the window. However they created a life of warmth, humour and good oldfashioned ingenuity. The kids wore raincoats when the roof leaked, when they developed eczema, Denise devised a menu of adzuki beans…only and when the council dismantled play equipment at the local park, John built a cubby house. So what if it was sprayed with arsenic. It’s not as if the kids were going to lick the walls. Laughout-loud funny with moments of pathos.

if only for a day! essentials that we might need for our day on the road - hairbrush, sunblock, moisturiser, handwipes etc ( a very clever idea). As our Porsche hugged the open road and growled with intent, we savoured the opportunity to forget all about work, the current financial chaos in the world, and all the stressful things that impact on our lives these days. The wind blew, our hair flew - and our world weary worries evaporated. This was the perfect escape - as we whipped through the curves (legally of course) and rounded each bend with enthusiasm - we embraced the freedom a sportscar offers its driver and passenger. We were only missing our Labrador; he would have looked very sexy as the pillion passenger in this car! When we arrived at Boreen Point - our chosen
destination, we parked, opened the boot and laid out the red tartan blanket, which was then topped with the cane baskets. As we opened the baskets and removed the glasses, china plates and cutlery - in anticipation of our feast, we were joined by a couple of locals, who told us we looked like a magazine advertisement. It was such a perfect picture! Our transportable feast was packed with cooler bags to ensure freshness and consisted of grilled piri piri spatchcock pieces with a sumac and honey yoghurt dip; mini salmon, chevre and dill quiches; Caesar salad with rosemary and garlic roasted chicken, crĂŠme fraiche dressing, crispy pancetta & rosemary croutons; an antipasto platter, cheese platter; French baguette; dark & white chocolate brownie with sour cherries; fruit platter with apple and
cinnamon yoghurt; Fiji water and soft drinks. Wow! We tried hard, but couldn't quite finish all that food in one sitting - so luckily, as everything was packed in individual containers, we were able to take some home for later. At the end of our romantic lunch amongst the trees, on the shoreline of Lake Boreen, we packed the car and headed back on our return journey, content in the knowledge that we can do it all again - anytime we want. Next time we will try another variation maybe a spa treatment - maybe that reserved table in the window of Harry's of Buderim. For more information visit: www.perfectdaygetaways.com.au

You can purchase an e-gift from Bush Heritage Australia on behalf of a friend or loved one, by visiting www.bushheritage.org.au/egift . By helping to protect threatened wildlife, you will not have to worry about unwanted socks and handkerchiefs ever again. By shopping online you can give your unique gift electronically, saving paper and protecting Australian animals and plants by supporting BHA’s on ground conservation programmes. A range of e-gifts for a variety of budgets are available for purchase, including: A $10 gift could protect up to 200 small birds and 100 native mice by purchasing five fox baits A $20 gift could pay for native seedlings for a revegetation project on one of Bush Heritage’s 31 reserves. A $100 gift could assist restoration work to protect endangered wildflowers, such as the northern golden moths orchid. After ordering your e-gift online you can choose to send your friend or family member a personalised ecard online, or you can order a beautiful card, printed
on recycled paper, to send through the mail. Either way, your gift will make a difference to Bush Heritage Australia’s conservation work in a truly unique and eco-friendly way. Bush Heritage Australia is a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to conserving Australia's most vulnerable ecosystems and wildlife species. Bush Heritage targets areas of land and waterways
that are crucial for conservation, and protects these through acquisition or partnership with government, conservation organisations, private individuals, and traditional owners. By 2025, Bush Heritage Australia aims to own, protect, or manage 1 per cent of Australian land. For more information visit www.bushheritage.org.au/egift
