Seven thousand Tri-hards Noosa veteran Peter O’Neill has competed in every Noosa Triathlon since its inception 27 years ago and this year was no exception. He joined former world champion and two-time Noosa champion Emma Carney, who still holds the race record she set back 1997, as well as legendary running champion Steve Moneghetti who with wife Tanya completing his first-ever triathlon. But it was Courtney Atkinson who ended his 2009 campaign on a winning note, successfully defending his title after a long season, while teenager Emma

Jackson claimed her first major victory over her more fancied rivals. An appreciative crowd turned out to see Atkinson win his second title but he had to come from behind after crashing on the bike leg just 5 kilometres from home. Another chapter was written into the record books as yet a different Emma emerged as one of Australia’s leading female athletes. This time it was not the Olympic champion, Emma Snowsill or world champion Emma Moffatt but the next generation, Emma Jackson. Atkinson emerged with the lead group of swimmers after the 1.5 kilometre swim, which included James Seear who finished third last year, Josh Amberger and Clayton Fettell. Light rain fell during the morning to make conditions slippery on the bike leg but it was Fettell who tried to inflict some damage on the group to try and break them up but they had him covered over the testing 40 kilometre cycle leg. “The race didn’t pan out exactly how I wanted. I had a race plan to dominate the bike leg and stamp my authority, commented

Discovery gong It was difficult to contain The Discovery Group’s excitement at Conrad Jupiters on the Gold Coast when the Noosa based ecotourism operator, collected the coveted gong as the 2009 Tour Operator of the Year. “The last twelve months have been an extremely difficult,” comments group managing director Wade Batty. “We’ve completely revitalized the business in order to ensure on-going sustainability, implemented new business systems and procedures, introduced two new twenty-seater Mitsubishi 4WD vehicles affectionately known as the Warrior and Xena, and three new touring packages plus totally revamped the website. All this through a global economic downturn,
cyclone, oil spill and two one-in 100 year floods.” Since Wade and Kelly Batty relocated from Sydney in 2003 leaving behind successful careers to pursue their dream, Fraser Island Discovery and Noosa Everglades Discovery have flourished under The Discovery Group brand name. There have been more than 17,000 bookings over the past 12 months, including approximately 7,650 guests from overseas primarily from Germany, UK, North America and New Zealand. Ray Martin tells all For forty-five years, television viewers have relied on Ray Martin to find out the ins-and-outs of British royalty, every Australian Prime Minister, movie stars and a plethora of others, through his interviews. However who knows the real story behind Ray and his rise to stardom? At a dinner hosted by Mary Ryan’s bookstore at Noosa Springs to launch his warts-and-all autobiography, Ray recounted stories from the book such as his impoverished childhood, living in thirteen different places before he’d even got to high school, a violent father, exceptional career,
adored wife Dianne and their two children, and his lasting love affair with the people of Australia. Ray, whose book was launched in Sydney by Michael Parkinson was gracious in the extreme, funny and thought-provoking. He said he is looking forward to spending January at his holiday house in Coolum and if you see him out and about or enjoying a coffee and reading the newspaper, do say hello.

people in style Shedding the light on multi million dollar residences in iconic locations is all in a day’s work for Joe Buchanan. oosa’s beachfront is considered one of the most prized parcels of real estate in the world as an international investment group attests to, with plans to redevelop the 4722 square metre Seahaven site, as the first Australian location for 20 three and four bedroom, fully serviced ultra luxurious Firstlight private residences, plus eleven retail tenancies. “The combination of an unrepeatable location with 100 metres of prime beach frontage and the unprecedented nature of the project,

guaranteed minimum stay of six weeks every year.” Brisbane-based architects, Arkhefield, has delivered the vision of Firstlight, a development of four buildings, three with six apartments and one with two penthouse-style residences. It includes a public beach walkway. “The design incorporates a spectacular infinity pool spanning 56 metres across the beachfront including a separate children’s area and a 25 metre lap pool, a poolside lounge and café area, and a rooftop lounge and pool with 360 degree panoramic views plus a fully serviced bar and barbecue,” Joe describes. “Residences are furnished with personal items such as photographs, artwork and sporting equipment placed in the residence prior to arrival, a personal shopper ensures the refrigerator and cupboards are stocked, and each is fully serviced with full time staff, 24-hour concierge services, maid and

room service, valet parking, access to chauffeurs, nannies, chefs and highly qualified leisure personnel. “Owners give us a call whenever they want to come and we ask if they’d like to stay on the pool level, first floor or penthouse. We’ll put all their belongings in the residence before they arrive, pick them up in the Mercedes and provide a full service operative which I think is great for Noosa because with an estimated 70% occupancy, there’s always going to be a wealthy owner in town spending money in the restaurants and shops.” Steve Bellotti, the chairman of Firstlight and managing partner of majority stakeholder BlueSky Capital, who grew up in nearby Gympie, where his publican mother, Margaret, still runs the Victory Hotel, says: “The development is largely styled on the Little Nell condo property in Aspen, which is marketed as the most exclusive private residence club in the world, as well as the world's most expensive co-owned development. Other Firstlight projects include Sun Valley in Idaho and Kawarau Falls Station near Queenstown.” “We’re also considering Byron Bay and top urban locations such as Circular Quay in Sydney, San Francisco, palaces in Buenos Aires and Central Park in New York City,” explains Joe, who is very familiar with the Aspen scene having lived there for a long period. However he has fallen head over heels for Noosa where he moved in January 2009 to oversee all Firstlight projects in Australasia. Understandably his preferred mode of dress, even to the office is shorts and flip-flops. “If I’m meeting with someone from Sydney or Melbourne who usually wears a suit, they wouldn’t expect to see me in Noosa wearing a suit would they? “The climate is wonderful, the lifestyle is great and everyone is active outdoors including my wife Kristi and the kids Cameron aged 6 and Liam aged 8, who attend St Andrews School and are part of the Nippers’ program. I like stand-up paddle boarding and swimming in the ocean. “We enjoy the restaurants and the farmers’ markets and while I’m handy on the barbecue, Kristi is a very good cook creating lovely healthy meals. Noosa is a wonderful environment.”

It’s $70 for two and that includes a glass of red, white or sparkling wine. Cato’s Café on Hastings Street from 7am is also the place to go when you’re on the go and short of time for breakfast, cup of tea or Vittoria coffee. Try something sweet or savoury from delicious breakfast menu items such as banana bread served with homemade mango and macadamia butter, warm ham and cheese croissants or creamy bircher muesli with yoghurt, fresh fruit and toasted hazelnuts, served with juices and the best coffee on the street.
Summer days, when sunkissed tomatoes, fleshy stonefruit, luscious eggplant, asparagus spears and so much more are ripe for the picking at farmers’ markets, do star turns on restaurant menus and in home-cooked dishes and, complemented by harmonious wines, the fresh flavours will dance on the palate.
Seafood and enjoy There’s a calm in the kitchen at Wahoo these days and owner John Siljuk says he couldn’t be happier. “They’re all girls. The brigade is led by first chef Francesca Kerran and second chef Natasha Bennett who are creating dishes featuring the season’s best produce such as sand crabs which are superb with a mango and avocado salad accompanied by a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or a ginger honey and orange glazed Kingfish with minted jasmine rice and broccolini. “Prawns come from local trawlers which go as far as Hervey Bay; long line trawlers catch tuna, mahi mahi and the little known and very deliciously moist rays bream; the Tequila, lime and jalapeno sorbet on plump South Australian oysters are sensational; and calamari followers

They’re all Noosaphiles like Lyndey Milan and Peter Howard, however when it comes to effervescence the latter take the cake. Lyndey Milan, one of the most influential people in the Australian food industry and Noosa last and therefore as she maintains, the reigning Hot & Spicy Food Festival Chilli Queen, teamed up with respected long-time friend and consummate foodie Peter Howard, at Ma Mensa, to celebrate the launch of their latest books: Lyndey’s The Best Collection and Peter’s BBQ Collection, both published by New Holland. Peter, who lives at Carters Ridge in the Noosa Hinterland with partner Gregor and two dogs, was brought up in Beaudesert, trained as an accountant, drove a truck, was a model and amongst other things went to Vietnam on National Service. presenter on the Nine Network’s Today Show, a food and wine judge plus he has written or coauthored 16 books. He is a key member of the G’Day USA festival where Australia is promoted to the US market, and has stamped his name on the international culinary map demonstrating how the Australian barbecue can be used successfully with contemporary cuisine. A few years ago Peter quipped that about the only thing you can’t do on a barbecue is cook a soufflé. How times have changed. The modern barbecue even allows you to cook it with passionfruit. As he says: “The worldwide renaissance of barbecuing is in full swing”. Perfect for entertaining and filled with great recipe ideas, his latest book brings together the very best barbecue dishes that Peter has championed throughout his career. His favourite recipes are proscuitto-wrapped lamb cutlets, “a lovely take on saltimbocca”; semillon sauvignon blanc oysters; almond parsley-crusted fish fillet with a pumpkin, tofu and grapefruit salad; and bananas, rum and whipped

Lyndey, a multi award-winning communicator, author, teacher, presenter and consultant on all things gastronomic, is seen every Friday on the Nine Network’s Mornings with Kerri-Anne. She has been enticed back as contributing food director to The Australian Women’s Weekly where she made her mark as food director and co-host of Fresh on the Nine Network for nine years, after a happy year with BBC Australian Good Food magazine. She not only knows food, she lives, understands and breathes it, and presents it in an entertaining and straightforward manner, as reflected in her fourth book. Lyndey told lunch guests that she began cooking at 16 and her first cookbooks were, The Margaret Fulton Cookbook and The Australian Women’s Weekly Cookbook. She went into a catering business via art teaching and as an advertising executive in London and met Peter when they were on a radio show with Mike Carlton. Their common love of food cemented a friendship and a short-term business relationship. “This book is full of my favourite recipes, some tweaked, and new material. Short cuts to entertaining, yet stylish and elegant recipes feature wine complements and dishes are broken down into how they are plated, from finger food to small, large and even sweet plates,” the gregarious gal says, adding some of the recipes and personal photos evoke fond memories such as cooking with Rick Stein, John Mangos and of course Peter Howard.

juice of 1 lemon 100ml extra virgin olive oil 1 punnet of fine herbs 4 slices Serrano ham Ajo blanco sauce: 200g white bread with no crust 1 ½ cups whole blanched almonds 3 gloves of garlic ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup almond oil 6 tbs sherry vinegar 3 tbs salt 1 cup milk 1 cup water
Method: Ingredients: 8 cleaned Mooloolaba king prawns 150g sliced celery heart 150g sliced apple
For the sauce soak the white bread in milk for 10 minutes. Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Slow-roasted duckling with an orange, port and plum sauce Ingredients: 2 carrots 2 sticks celery 3 onions 4 bay leaves 1.6kg duck 300ml port 300ml fresh squeezed orange juice

Method: The day before: Roughly chop carrots, celery and 2 onions. Place in baking dish with bay leaves; cover with water. Rub duck with olive oil or duck fat and seasoning. Place in a rack over the vegetables and roast in a moderate oven for 25 – 30 minutes or until skin is browned, then cover dish with foil and cook for another 90 minutes until tender. Allow to cool. Remove breast meat from bone with skin on and wings and legs intact. Drain vegetables and refrigerate stock overnight. Remove duck fat. Sauce: Finely dice 1 onion and sauté. Add port, warm though and flame. Add orange juice, plum sauce, reduce by two-thirds and season to taste. Before serving, warm the duck, crisp the skin and cut into 4 pieces. Serve on a platter with seasonal Mediterranean vegetables, roast kipfler potatoes and sauce on the side. Serves 2. kitchen thermometer. Meanwhile, put the sugar, remaining glucose syrup and 50 ml water in another small heavy-based saucepan. Stir over low heat until the sugar has dissolved, then cook until the temperature reaches 170ºC. While the syrups are cooking, beat the egg whites using electric beaters until stiff peaks form. As soon as the honey syrup reaches 130ºC, very slowly pour it into the egg whites, beating continuously. When the sugar syrup reaches 170ºC, very slowly add it to the egg whites and continue beating until the mixture has cooled enough so that it is just hot, but not hot enough to burn you. Lightly grease a 15 x 25 cm tray and line with rice paper. Stir the almonds and lemon zest into the nougat mixture, then pour it into the prepared tray. Cover the top of the nougat with more rice paper, cutting the sheets to fit. Leave to stand until cool, then cut into 12 pieces. The nougat will keep in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Makes 12 pieces.

Aged fourteen she worked two jobs to pay for girlish extravagances and by eighteen there were twenty company names on her resume. “From working at the local pool, where I had my first Chico roll, choked on my first and only cigarette, and first kissed a boy, to the local bakery, Pizza Hut, Dial a Butler, the local chemist plus a year as the spare parts girl at major motor dealership, all whilst completing my formal education at a Catholic Girls College in Brisbane,” recalls Celeste, who went on to pursue a degree in graphic design at TAFE, followed by full-time position as a draftswoman at the Courier Mail and for the next fifteen years, a part time beauty consultant for Estee Lauder and then Lancôme.“Both career paths were a mix of passion and pleasure and gave me an early appreciation that you can always get away with a $2 mascara but nothing compares to the power of a $50 lipstick, especially in Double-take Red.” With Celeste’s inability to sit still for a moment, long service leave was abandoned in favour of bar work in a ski lodge in Perisher. “I was a non-drinker with no formal training but I fell on my feet, was offered a position on the front desk, paid 50 cents in every dollar to the taxman, went to the snow twice, survived on babysitting jobs in the evenings and three months later headed back to Brisbane to my old job with a burning desire to pursue hospitality.”

Dreams do dome true and after two months as a receptionist on Hamilton Island, Celeste became personal assistant to the island’s owner Keith Williams and ultimately this was the turning point in her career. Back with her retired parents on the Sunshine Coast, she honed her skills in event management at the Hyatt Regency Coolum, then married and became a mother. With the youngest child at kindy and her “spider senses madly tingling” she started the empowering seminar series The Woman I Am, but six years ago, Celeste hit her strides when she attended a wedding of two friends, whose wonderful love story went untold by the celebrant. “It was pretty much a stereotype of legal words and little else,” recalls Celeste who lives in Cooroy with Molly and Charlie plus chooks, kittens and Hamish the cute puppy and blends the best of country and coastal lifestyles. “It captured nothing of this couple’s personalities, those initial sparks of romance, the incredible journey throughout their relationship, meeting the challenges and facing the hurdles of blending two families together. Nor did it involve the couple’s children. “My friends thought their wedding was beautiful of course but why wouldn't they? Pristine river location, sun setting over the water and the intimacy of a small group of friends. For the ceremony they were offered a selection of prewritten scripts to choose from and they simply chose the one they liked the

mother’s legs,” Celeste says with a chuckle, adding there were two brothers who just at the vital moment, one put his foot out intentionally tripping his sibling, the ring bounced on the boat’s deck and was never seen again. Celeste recalls a groom who really got under her skin: “I was standing beside him on his wedding day, the bride was moments away and I asked him how he was feeling. He looked me straight in the eye and said ‘To tell you the truth Celeste, I don’t really love her but I guess I will grow to.’ I should have seen the signs when the groom’s mother booked me and said: ‘I will tell you now Celeste if you are fat, frumpy and wear florals, just remember I will have to look at those wedding photos for a very long time.’ “My number one tip to every groom is the importance of that kiss, and it is why I titled my book, The Ten Second Kiss. Too quick and the photographer missed that one vital shot, too long and everyone begins to feel a little intrusive. You’d think I had just asked some of those boys to run a ten kilometre marathon with the looks they give you at the prospect of ten seconds. The book is written in a fun easy manner with 42 chapters in a pocket size format covering just about every aspect any bride and groom need.” As for still juggling jobs, Celeste is still at it.“Old habits die hard and for the past eight years at 5:30am I put on my Queensland Police Force hat, as operations officer, a fancy title for office cleaner. There goes my little secret.”

When travelling it’s important that wounds, bites and skin rashes do not mar a good holiday. r Deborah Mills or Dr Deb, the Travel Doctor as she better known, has been practicing in the field of travel medicine for 20 years. She is also the author of Travelling Well which is in its fifteenth edition and has devised a list of the top ten tips for happier holidays. •Always use 15+ sunscreen in the sun, especially in the tropics. •Blisters occur from friction between layers of skin. Wear dry socks. Apply dressing at the first sign of irritation to avoid more damage. Small blisters will heal if you stop the friction. Large blisters should be drained with a sterile needle, applied with Betadine and covered with a non stick dressing. •Insect bites need no particular treatment! Hold an ice cube on the spot for instant relief. •Most snake bites are not poisonous, but treat all bites as if they are. Immobilise the bitten limb to stop spread of venom, use a splint. Do not ‘suck out the poison’ or apply a tourniquet. Transport to medical attention.

•Animal bites are serious. If bitten or scratched by a cat, dog or monkey then wash and dress the wound immediately to avoid infection. Water should be poured into the wound, do not scrub as this can push the infection deeper. See a doctor immediately. •Ring shaped rashes are known as ringworm. It is not actually a worm but a fungus and highly contagious. Anti fungal cream should be applied to the edges of the rash – try to get cream that is only needed once per day. •Athletes Foot or tinea is flaking skin between the toes - a fungal infection, so keep the area dry and apply anti-fungal cream. •Place pressure on bleeding wounds. If you are helping others, wear disposable gloves if possible to minimise the contact of blood. Apply pressure on the bleeding wound with a large dressing for at lease three minutes. Do not use a tourniquet. If there is an object in the wound, apply pressure around the wound. Never remove large foreign objects embedded in the wound, or the bleeding may get much worse. Keep pressure on the wound until the bleeding stops. Wound care checklist: Adequate cleaning – wash hands and clean all wounds thoroughly; apply a little antiseptic, after wound has been cleaned; if possible bring the wound edges together; choose the best dressing i.e. open wounds such as burns, graze or ulcer, need a moist dressing every 3-7 days and Jocelyn, Ray and Molly Smith closed wounds such as a clean cut, need a dry dressing daily. Monitor the wound for signs of infection and treat quickly if it develops. Carry a medical kit with you at all times. “Skin is the biggest organ of the body, but taking a few simple precautions while travelling, will reduce your risk of skin damage,” suggests Dr Deb.

hitting the top note... Winning a prestigious opera scholarship will be the springboard to international stardom for a Peregian Springs soprano. Kathleen Parker athleen Parker’s voice resonates with excitement. Understandable. As the winner of the 2009 Opera Foundation Australia’s Audi German Opera Scholarship, she received $43,000 and will join the renowned Cologne Opera Ensemble for its 2010/2011 season. Kathleen was born in Canada and brought ‘home’ when she was a babe by her Australian parents who nurtured her interest in music by enrolling her at Matthew Flinders College. She studied for a Bachelor of Music at the University of Queensland and graduated in 2003 with First Class Honours. At the Australian Opera Studio she graduated with Honours and received the Dux Prize, won the Ethel Osborn Prize in 2008 and also the SouthEast Queensland Performing Arts Competition in 2009. She went on to train in Florence, London and Berlin, performed in Tokyo with the International Federation for Arts and Culture in 2008 and did further training in Perth under Gregory Yurisich on a training scholarship from Colby Drilling. She is fluent in Italian, French and is fasttracking her German language skills. Roles have included Arminda (la Finta Giardiniera), Mrs Peachum (The Threepenny Opera), Micaela (Carmen), Laoula (L’etoile), Vitellia (La Clemenza Di Tito), Die Mutter (Hansel und Gretel), Elle (La Voix Humaine), Parasha (Mavra) and Elettra (Idomeneo). Accolades have been numerous, such as a review of La Clemenza di Tito: “Kathleen Parker is a dramatic soprano in the making. Tall and with a powerful acting presence, she commanded attention as Vitellia. With the

slightest of glance and gesture, she revealed the character’s duplicity. Her huge aria with its dramatic recitative was magnificently realised…” When the scholarship was announced at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music following a public recital by the six finalists, Kathleen says her performance of a song of Richard Wagner’s heroine in Lohengrin could have sealed her success:“We performed a song of our choice, then gave the adjudicators a selection of songs to choose from. I was so thrilled when the adjudicator read out Elsa’s Dream (Einsam in truban Tagen) for me. “There needs to be a particular quality of voice, height and stature for a singer to perform this. It was probably then I knew the prize was within reach.” Adjudicators, Malcolm Batty, Victor Morris and Ghillian Sullivan said, “Kathleen shows tremendous potential for a great career, we feel that she will be a splendid ambassador for the Opera Foundation and Australia.” The 27 year-old keep-fit fanatic says the scholarship will finally rid her of the ‘emerging performer’ tag, and set her on a path similar to that of Anita Watson who was a previous winner and is now a soloist at Covent Garden. She will however miss her family, being a social butterfly with her many friends and naturally the very beautiful coastal region.

Sarah says the motivation behind Horselife Publishing was to investigate and raise the profiles of the various riding clubs, riding disciplines and talented horse-people in our area: “The photo shoots were sensational. To witness the unique connections between man and horse was an absolute privilege, and it is that connection that shines through in the shots we’ve selected.” Alison said the calendar which depicts 13 horsemen and steeds (one per month plus the cover) from different riding disciplines and equine industry areas, was not about ‘beefcake’ photographs: “If you're not into the guys, the horses are great, and if you're not into the horses, the guys are great.” Photographer Andrew Lindsay, a specialist equine photographer based in Kenilworth, has a lifelong involvement in the horse industries and thought the photo shoot was a dream assignment. “We need as much support as we can get to
a whole year.” At historic Yandina Creek Station where the calendar was launched, Mr January, horseman, trainer, entertainer and bush poet Guy McLean wowed the crowd with a spectacular demonstration of his unique horse handling skills. Who else can make two horses lie down and then ride a third horse over the top of them, all the while cracking whips and jokes? Contemporary and classic flavours, splashes of red coupled with simplicity for serenity, show off Summer House’s design versatility. ccupying a dress-circle position in the exclusive Settler’s Cove precinct, and located within a quiet cul-de-sac above Noosa Sound, interior designer Deborah Roffey from Fae Rentoul’s Summer House, eschewed her contemporary colourful style for a restrained palette in a Riverlight luxury apartment. The brief from New Zealand clients was simple: Create an earthy, comfortable space where the couple and their adult sons and partners could have wonderful holidays filled with memories of good times together. Deborah Roffey felt that a neutral palette should be retained for the major furnishing items so she worked back from the travertine tiles and existing finishes ensuring of course there was emphasis on the

magnificent views over Laguna Bay. “From this base I was able to introduce red, the client’s favourite accent colour,” Deborah explains adding one of the pivotal pieces used was an exquisite antique sideboard. “With its lacquered red patina the piece gives the dining room so much soul. It also cleverly contrasts with a contemporary timber table and rattan dining chairs.” In the living area, Deborah used red accents again, this time in the scatter cushions and décor items as well as in the custom floor rug that has red art-silk ribs running through it. “I was conscious of maintaining the element of comfort, which was of key importance to the clients, so generous Jardan sofas were custom made and upholstered in Chivasso chenille and complemented by ottomans upholstered in a strong red continues over..

he first bougainvillea, a climbing variety was discovered in South America in the early 1900s. From that original bougainvillea, now know as Mrs Butt, earnest propagation and hybridisation began. The flamboyant colour of these tropical beauties comes

If you want a true dwarf groundcover go for Temple Fire. Good climbers are Tango and Scarlet O'Hara. For arbours, select mid-size plants but be patient. Refrain from cutting the thorny plant back before it matures as the more you prune, the more vigorous the regrowth will be.

The sojourn forms the basis of twelve to fifteen paintings Belinda has called Confessions of a Beachcomber. They are due for completion in March/April 2010 and will be exhibited at her Sable Gallery in Quamby Place. “I am inspired by just about anything natural or aesthetic and often walk around looking at lines, textures and the simplicity of nature,” says Belinda who describes herself as a contemporary artist going on an emotive abstract journey that’s woven with the influences of ancient threads and nature’s vibrant rhythm. "I have various styles and love experimenting with technique, colour, pattern and texture. I have a deep affinity for native/tribal and enjoy creating patterns with dots.” She chooses oils for their rich robust quality and uses mainly large canvases such as three which have been commissioned by Arkhefield, the architects for the Firstlight private residences, an ultra luxury destination to be built on Hastings Street, and will replace Seahaven. Hanging in harmony with the interior design of the show suite where the model of the Firstlight development is displayed, Belinda says considering the number of artists in the region, she was thrilled to be chosen. “The blue tones of the smallest painting, which is 1.2 x 1.5 metres and called Firstlight, reflects the beautiful sombre mood of the ocean,” she says. “The painting behind the leather sofa is 2.5 x 1 metre and called On the Beach. It is in deep purple and gold which gives the eerie aura of the looking underwater through mangroves. Another heartfelt painting is Desert Storm which is 2.5 x .9 metres and is in deep red tones.” Using her trademark, thick brushes laden with lush-coloured oil paints which she mixes before carefully washing them wand-like onto large Belgian linen canvasses, Belinda leaves intriguing layers and textures that burnish with age and are reminiscent of fabric.

In pursuit of the Pugh-tiful Hoarders who filled their homes with heavy furniture, bric-a-brac and anything inbetween, have been replaced by new-age collectors such as Susie Osmaston who focus on objects that add heart and soul to a home. ne hundred pieces of Michael Pugh’s distinctive pottery and you can’t get enough of it. Why? It just struck a chord – the colours, the shapes. Originally I bought individual dinner plates, ended up with a couple of dozen decorated with all his favourite fish, crabs, butterflies and more. When my stepson was young we used to discuss each morning what we would have for dinner and help craft the menu until one day he said: “I want my dinner on the crab plate tonight, not the dolphin.” When I told Michael Pugh, he said one of his friends takes a Pugh plate with him when he dines out at restaurants.

long-term friends have houses brimming with Pugh that I have given them over the past 25 years or more. Buster, the Lhasa Apso’s beautiful green water bowl is actually one that Michael said had a flaw in the glaze, so he gave it to me very cheaply. Poor Buster. Often when we go there I have no set ideas on what I want or need. I just fall in love with things like the tagine, a teapot or tiles I use as coasters. Apart from the 100 plus pieces I have at home, there are old pieces I’ve passed on to the children. Double that figure to include all the presents.
What else do you collect?
Wedgwood Jasperware in particular the pale blue one with the crusty white decoration, also shells especially cowries. I had so many during the era when I was secretary for the Cooroora Electorate which later became the State Seat of Noosa. I decorated the office with them. Window sills were overflowing, much to the amazement of the constituents. Now I have an interest (husbandly horror), in decorative old clocks.
In the 80s I found a marvellous platter, which I still use today, in the gallery at Fairhill Nursery at Yandina. I started haunting the gallery and then I found the divine Mr Pugh at his studio in Lindsay Road, Buderim. I have met his daughters, even knew his mother, who was a painter, as is his wife Janey. He’s a delightful person and if I’m feeling a bit down in the dumps I plan a visit to his studio to cheer me up and of course buy up.

We go to the Pugh studio three or four times a year, stocking up for Christmas, kids’ birthdays, engagements, etc. Every stepchild/nephew/niece has his/her own platter/s given to them on various special occasions. My stepdaughter decorated her whole beach house in the colours of a piece we bought for her engagement, and when she was pregnant, she received a beautiful beige, white and gold tagine with a pair of booties I’d popped inside. When I had pneumonia last year and went to Buderim Hospital for tests, had a few hours to fill, so talked my husband into taking me to Michael’s where, propped on his sofa I chose sushi dishes. At a previous home in Sunshine Beach where I lived for 30 years, we decorated part of the second bathroom with turtle tiles and many of my
After 12 years at The Age newspaper in Melbourne, I moved to Noosa in 1976, did publicity at the legendary Pine Trees, established a company with my husband to lobby for an FM radio license - 4GY which came onto the market so we bought it and ran it for couple of years before it was taken over. I was the Cooroora Electorate Secretary for a few years before Mayor Noel Playford offered me a job doing media work for Noosa Council. I recently retired after 17 years. Also wrote a column for Noosa News for 23 years. I lost my first husband to Multiple Sclerosis, the second to a blonde and am now blissfully married forever more to divine Englishman Johnnie. We live at Noosa Heads, am retired, do sewing, kayaking, boating, love walking the dog and of course entertaining with Michael Pugh-ware centre stage.
Recently I fell in love with a set of small bowls that we started using for breakfast fruit, so I asked Michael to make me dinner plates to match, then I thought it would be lovely to have entrée plates…bread and butter plates…it never stops. The most divine piece has to be the tall blossom vase which was a farewell gift from my Noosa Council colleagues.

Pass through the grandiose glass and copper doors and into what is surely the most impressive restaurant space in Australia. With its ceiling in excess of eleven metres, soaring marble columns, bevelled glass windows, stained oak and an almost entirely black palette, the effect is reminiscent of a contemporary cathedral albeit so luxe. Step into the bar and continue to be awestruck. There are 4,000 Riedel glasses in the ‘chandelier’ wall and a sophisticated drinks menu, designed by creative mixologist Linden Pride, It draws inspiration from the best and most legendary cocktail bars around the world, and direction from historical recipes originating from the 1880s to 1930s, the golden age of cocktails, whilst providing a twist to the original. The classic Moscow Mule takes its recipe from the 1950s, “only we craft and carbonate our own spiced ginger beer with fresh ginger, manuka honey and spring water to give the true kick a mule should deliver,” says Linden emphasizing that the appeal of the classics is timeless. “Or maybe the simple original mixed drink of London Dry Gin with house made tonic. Noosa Festival of Surfing 15 to 21 March 2010, Noosa Main Beach Australian virtuoso violinist Richard Tognetti premiered his latest bizarre fusion of surf and sound in the most unlikely place last September – in the picturesque city of Maribor, in the wine-growing hills above Slovenia’s River Drava. The collaboration of Tognetti and friends playing the classics while surf cinematographer Jon Frank provides the vision, proved to be a huge hit at Festival Maribor, and the concert, known as “Glide”, will make its Australian premiere at the Global Surf Industries Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Golden Breed. Tognetti, one of the most respected violinists in the world, is celebrating his twentieth year as creative director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. What is not so well known about him is the fact that he is as enthusiastic about surfing as he is about music. A highly-skilled surfer who grew up riding the beach breaks around Wollongong, NSW, Tognetti has in recent years specialised in riding surfboards without fins, a movement pioneered by his friend, former pro surfer Derek Hynd. In 2007, Hynd and Tognetti took a group of surfers to the remote coast of King Island in Bass Strait, where they experimented on finless boards by day and played music in rustic halls by night. The result, a film called “Musica Surfica”, has been a smash hit at surf film festivals around the world, taking out awards in New York and San Sebastian. “Glide” is a further extension of Tognetti’s passion for exploring the moods of the ocean through music. “It’s not ‘happy-clappy aloha’ stuff,” he warns. The ocean has its dark moments, and so does this work.” “Glide’s” premiere in Slovenia included original compositions by Tognetti and works by Bach and Strauss. In Noosa, Tognetti will be accompanied for the two-hour concert by his ACO colleague Satu Vanska and a vocalist and percussionist. “Glide” will be performed in a concert marquee at “Surf City” (Noosa Lions Park) on Monday, March 20, 2010. Ditto the sea-changers, locals and Noosans, who also think they’re lucky to live here. ut luck, as Michael Gloster said in his book The Shaping of Noosa, has nothing to do with it: “For more than 30 years a small group of ordinary people has fought doggedly to preserve Noosa from the ravages of over-development, and their successful battle has created a blueprint for all of Australia.” Paradise was almost lost, but fortunately regained. Read the current diatribe in the local media and one could think that Noosa is losing or has lost its lustre. Perhaps it’s post-amalgamation blues, wondering how mega shopping centres can expand and survive or understanding the direction and benefits of the

destination. Our town, not ‘brand Noosa’ has proved it has something for everyone. But let’s not forget the genesis of Noosa which is Aboriginal for ‘shade’. Between 1828 and1839 convict David ‘Wandi’ Bracefell managed to escape four times from Moreton Bay. Each time he fled north and lived with the local Aborigines, presumably the Gubbi Gubbi people. In 1842, Andrew Petrie and Henry Russell took their whale boat up the Noosa River explored the Noosa region and searched for timber and sheep grazing country. Soon after, the prospect of finding gold at nearby Gympie attracted new settlers and subsequently holiday-makers to Noosa and Tewantin. It wasn't until after World War I however, that the area began to develop as a tourist resort, attracting about 600 visitors a year. A surf lifesaving club was formed in
