Stars come out for play It was standing room only when some of Australia’s most respected thespians and celebrities performed a one-night-only reading of David Williamson’s 1987 classic play Emerald City. The performance, a fundraiser for the Noosa Longweekend Festival featured a slightly adapted script which David says “heads in a more scurrilous direction.” The plot, which is just as relevant today as it was in the 80s, follows Melbourne playwright, Colin moving to Sydney and being exposed to the dark side of this ‘Emerald City’ replete with pompous politicians, corrupt councils, sensationalist media representatives and dodgy 1. ur story on page 24 has touched our hearts. We are animal lovers, so much so, that we want your help to raise some funds for this worthy cause. It is an expensive project feeding all the injured animals that come into the various centres. The animals need fresh fruit, meat, grain and volunteer carers, every hour of every day. There’s no holiday when you look after sick animals.

Most importantly they need funds. This is the most useful donation they can receive. Then centres can buy the specific needs of each animal, for instance, the swans eat a whole iceberg lettuce daily, not an old out of date one but fresh, just as you would eat, because the older they get, the leaves contain a poison . The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is not open to the public, however they would welcome your donations to the address below or to one of the other centres. Princess of the air waves... There’s no holding back Sammy Power when she chats warts-and-all with Helen Flanagan.

R

adio host and television personality Sammy Power was born under the star sign of Cancer with traits including home body. Wrong. “I’ve moved house at least 45 times, so much in fact I have the removal company on speed dial,” says the effervescent red head who’s part of the, Zinc 96 morning Zoo crew. “Moving is one of the top three stresses in life apparently, along with breaking up relationships and death, all of which I have done this year. Not death in a literal sense, but death of the old me. It’s been a hard road and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone - but so worth it when you come out the other side.”

After 25 years in the radio game, getting paid to read

magazines, watch TV and being able to wear pyjamas to work, she admits it’s a cut throat world: “There’s a knife lurking around every corner, ready to be plunged into your back, yet it’s an addiction that’s hard to cut loose from. “You have to know what’s going on in the average person’s life and turn it into (hopefully) three humorous minutes. That’s about ten times a show. No wonder on any given day my handbag is full of scraps of paper, flyers, and coasters with funny scribbles which I try to decipher around 4am every morning. Entertainment radio is a constant hunt to feed the monster.” Sammy grew up on the Gold Coast, the younger daughter of surgeon John Power and creative genius Jan Power: “They were very social, bohemian types, lots of fun and laughter, parties and cocktails after cocktails. Then one day with no warning my sister, Astrid was off to boarding school at Stuartholme in Brisbane, I was boarding at St Hildas in Southport, mum

was living in Brisbane and working at Channel 7 and dad was off to Harley Street, the medical heart of London. An extremely acrimonious divorce left me with the burning desire not to have kids but my sister has made up for it with a long successful marriage to Rick, a photographer and three beautiful daughters. who I pretend are mine anyway.” At ten, a befuddled Sammy and Astrid were bundled off to London: “I spent the next six years ensconced in various expensive nun-riddled boarding schools, being a freezing, freckled redhead mixing with very la-di-da ladies who looked and spoke like Camilla Parker-Bowles and thought all Australians were convicts who hopped around on kangaroos. Finally, I headed back to mum and started a wild partying life as only a slightly eccentric freed from a convent can. I earned $100 a week working at mum’s famous cafe the Breadline, where I’d pretended I was French or whatever took my fancy on the day.” Out of 5,000 applicants, Sammy was one of 12 chosen for a film, television and radio school. Today she’s the only one still in the industry and not sure if that's an achievement or if she doesn’t know when it’s time to leave the party. “And what a party it’s been back on the Sunshine Coast. I started my career here as a copywriter/announcer on 4GY Gympie.” After the Big Smoke of Sydney, it was Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Newcastle and Melbourne, working with fabulous people such as Doug Mulray, Gibson and Duckworth, Club Veg, Denton, Mikey Robbins, Ian Dicko Dickson, Kyle Sandilands and Marcia Hines. It was after Sammy’s six year stint at Mix 106.5 in Sydney that her world began falling apart. She and her partner wanted to return to Queensland for family reasons. She was offered a job with Prime radio who own Hot 91 and Zinc 96, so moved to the coast with her two16 year old Himalayan cats called Chops Marie and Pee Wee Angel, but was distracted by issues in Sydney with her partner. “When someone has a problem you can either pull them up or they can drag you down with them. The double whammy was soon after we broke up. He moved in with a girl I’d known for 30 years. I was blindsided. I totally pulled away from everyone I knew in Brisbane, where he now lives with her. I couldn’t

sleep, think straight - or fathom the level of hurt I was feeling. I can honestly say betrayal is one of the most painful and humiliating experiences on earth.” Sammy’s new mission to make herself someone she’d like to be now seemed achievable. A diet of

bananas, turkey, the occasional protein drink and sixteen kilos disappeared. “After 30 years of supposed

exercise, cooking healthy food, spending time on myself, improving the inside and out. “If life is just one long party, nothing is real. The old me wouldn’t even drive to the beach, but now I walk to the lighthouse most afternoons and have a good talk to myself as I look out and enjoy the beauty of the ocean “Every few weeks I go and visit my amazing mother who has held me together so many times in my life. She is so well read, funny, and terrifies a lot of people, which I can understand because she doesn’t suffer fools, but to me she is always non-judgmental and a lifesaver.” Sammy say she’d love a long lost relative to leave her enough to buy a mansion in Noosa and meet a courageous and kind man “who loves me and doesn’t have his eye on the blonde with the nose job and fake boobs standing behind me. Not much to ask, but enough to get on with. Then I’ll tackle world peace.” Footnote: Sammy’s contract at Zinc was not renewed by the new owners, unable to justify the cost of the three person breakfast show. She has had talks with several other networks and is looking forward to the next chapter.

Dreams come true.. Duncan & Emma’s perfect location. Double Island Point for their wedding

Scouting for exotic locations, owning two successful businesses and having the perfect wedding day are all in a day’s work for Emma and Duncan Jones. Location search - Whitehaven Beach

Filming in the Gold Coast Hinterland

18

NoosaStyleLiving

uncan Jones has spent countless days in search of the perfect locations from the exotic Lizard Island, Port Douglas and Fiji to New South Wales, the Outback and closer to home on Noosa’s North Shore. He knows first hand and appreciates how overseas production companies are drawn here. “With its rainforests, reefs, beaches and deserts, Queensland has some of the most exotic film locations in the world,” says the passionate Aussie location manager, who is currently working on a 3D feature film called Bait, about a tsunami that destroys a city and the survivors live in a flooded landscape amongst hungry sharks. “There are not many places in the world that are safe, English is the language and whilst I don’t just know every good spot, I do know some great spots on private properties. Imagine private waterfalls amongst endless hectares of untouched rainforest or secluded beaches that abut the Great Barrier Reef. ‘Working on the films is so exciting. From the moment the script arrives in your hands to the final day, it is fully charged. The creative juices flow as ideas and concepts are bounced around with directors and production designers, there’s the coordination of all the logistical needs from equipment and trucks to camera crews and helicopters plus sorting out complications when scenes involve dangerous stunt work in cars, with gun fire and explosions in residential areas. “Once the script is broken down as to what locations are needed, we scout for a range of options, negotiate with all the stake-holders, co-ordinate logistics including vehicle bases, crew access and mapping, then stay on during the filming phase to ensure the agreements made between the film and the location are maintained. “I’ve had to get permission for celebrities to bungy jump out of helicopters, have shoot-outs on high rise roof tops, car chase scenes over the Brisbane’s Storey Bridge and for Kate Hudson to be alone on Whitehaven Beach. Some of the more difficult negotiations have been gaining permission from National Parks and tourism operators to close Whitehaven for three days; and recently closing the main street of Coolangatta to film a tsunami wave “destroying” the town with 200 stunt performers running and falling with cars skidding and crashing as the “wave” hits.

D

…have shoot-outs on high rise roof tops, car chase scenes over the Brisbane’s Storey Bridge and for Kate Hudson to be alone on Whitehaven Beach “My favourite experience was my first job as a dolphin trainer on The New Adventures of Flipper. The Producers dressed me as a mermaid once and asked me to swim with Flipper as the actors didn’t have the strength to swim with a giant latex fin underwater.” The highs being a movie scout are numerous, the lows apart from early starts are zero and for those looking to succeed in life Duncan says, they should seek out opportunities rather than look at those who are doing it then just sit and wish. “You have to put yourself out there, work hard and keep trying. If there’s something you really want, have a go.” “For example I worked briefly on the Chronicles of Narnia Voyage of the Dawn Treader before On location Brisbane’s deciding to open Caribbean Dreams Wellington Point Gelati in Peregian Beach and now we’re opening a second Caribbean Dreams in Coolum Beach opposite the Surf Life Saving Club. “Emma and I hand make the gelati in-store the traditional artisan way, which I learned when living above a little Italian gelateria in France, training dolphins. Living in the Caribbean inspired the tropical décor so it looks like an island film set. We’re more than just a scoop shop. You can enjoy sundaes, hot Belgian waffles and Italian espresso. Winning the 2010 Sunshine Coast Small Retailer of the Year was a great surprise and honour.” The most beautiful dream-come-true was Emma and Duncan’s recent wedding at Double Island Point. All the guests travelled in style with Discovery Tours. “It was like organising a movie location negotiating with National Parks who couldn’t remember the last time anyone had married on the north beach,” says an elated Duncan who was quick to dismiss Emma’s late arrival. “An unexploded bomb had been washed up onto the beach, a bomb disposal team had to be called, so my wife was delayed for three hours.” B

party on... private parking bays in apartment complexes. 4. If you live in an apartment building and you’re using the communal areas, such as the pool or barbecue, neighbours will be pretty frosty next day if they have to pick up empty beer bottles and plastic cutlery. 5. If you’re partying in a park or a communal area, take garbage bags so you can take your prawn heads and wine bottles back to where they came from. If possible, why not invite your neighbours - that way they can’t complain and it’s a great way to make new friends - far better than making new enemies.

There are laws covering noise pollution after a certain hour and police can be called in - so be aware of this and keep it down before it gets to this point of no return. 2. The start of a new year marks the opportunity for redefining ones outlook for the next 12 months. What better way to do it than through a new colour and restyle.

YOURSELF

N

atural is an absolute key word in fashion for 2011 and when it comes to choosing a hair colour, you are to be guided by natural looks in order to be trendy in the forthcoming year. Sun kissed highlights are always in and with such a great variety of blonde shades to choose from, one must admit that blonde hair has a certain zest which enhances sex appeal. There is such a high demand for beautiful clean blondes and with Wella Professional new pro series it is possible for your creative stylist to deliver breath takingly beautiful blondes that exude smoothness and shine. The once popular chunky highlights which gave a stripy effect have been updated to a more modest blend of tones ranging from light to dark, to achieve softer, natural blondes. Red hair colour is an absolute trend for 2011 this can be worn as a dramatic or more natural look keeping in mind that vibrant red hair colour will highlight any blemishes on your skin. Luxe all over colour, think sandy beige blondes, richer reds, deeper browns and glistening blacks are all ways of redefining ones outlook for your next image make-over. To enhance your skin tone, never go more than two shades lighter or darker – this guarantees that you won’t fade or wash away your natural beauty. We are always looking into ways to prolong our colour from fading. The two main environmental aggressions which damage the health and beauty of the hair are saltwater and sun. The fight against the harmful effect of salt water and the sun, “Kerastase Paris Introduced their new sun range care “AQUA-SEAL and LAIT RICHESSE For suppleness and shine as well as protect and repair against environmental aggressions. Together with “PROTECT SPRAY FROM Label M, which is a moisturising blend of jasmine, sweet pea, vanilla, wheat, and soy this helps to shield hair from heat damage and UV rays, and balances porosity. Protein spray also prevents colour fade and act as a PH Neutralizer.

When it comes to haircuts there are cuts and there are amazing haircuts. So what is the difference and how do you get that wow factor with every single haircut? Firstly take a good look at your faces’ strengths and weaknesses and then seek out a hairstylist that is familiar with face shape analysis, so both you and your stylist can discuss and agree on a style that’s going to work for you and your hair type. Easy short hairstyles are always a popular choice for summer, just add Mud Clay from Label M to create an edge driven look with maximum texture and a low sheen finish. Also a big favourite at the moment is choppy bob styles, which work well for those with a high hairline as this haircut looks great with a full fringe. The bob has endless variations and can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion. Long hair is as always a hot favourite for summer and it’s the perfect accessory to this seasons 50’s sexy style feminine fashion. The trend is healthy, glossy long hair worn in soft sensual waves and curls. This can be achieved by using a leave in moisturiser, such as “Kerastase Paris Nectar Thermique which not only adds moisture and shine but also protects the hair from any heat damage caused by styling tools, while controlling frizz and enhancing tousled curls. We will be seeing lots of plaits and tresses in the coming months as they have been making a big come back on the cat walk scene. If you are constantly struggling with frizz and unruly hair why not treat yourself to a Global Keratin Permanent blow-dry treatment, which is a revolutionary hair taming system that weatherproofs hair against fly away frizz and the effects of moisture, it leaves the hair looking and feeling soft, shinny, healthy and luxurious. When hair is gorgeous shiny and manageable every day, the time required to style at home is reduced – what a pleasure! B

yatt Regency Coolum offers the largest day spa in the Southern Hemisphere, providing the perfect setting for the ultimate wellness and relaxation experience. Known simply as the Spa, the 2245 square metre complex uses a clever indoor-outdoor design to draw the surrounding native bushland into the total wellness experience. As part of the international Hyatt Pure concept, the Spa is designed to embrace its local environment and culture, to provide an authentic experience that is true to the Sunshine Coast. The term ‘spa’ comes from the Latin ‘sanitas per aquas’ which means ‘healing by waters’, and treatments and services at the Spa are focused on the principles of hydrating the body to promote wellness and renewal. Guests are encouraged in the concept of ‘healing by waters’ through separate men’s and ladies’ spas and saunas, wet treatment rooms, herbal tea in the relaxation lounges, private spa baths in the couples’ suites, and the shared pool and spa facilities in the main courtyard. Recently awarded Best Destination Spa (Resort) at the 2010 Australian Spa Association Awards in Melbourne, this facility is one of the Sunshine Coast’s best-kept secrets – but that’s set to change, says Spa Director Kyle LaMonica. “Our predominant area of expertise at Hyatt is in providing outstanding service - we would love to welcome more day visitors to the Spa to experience this level of professionalism in a relaxed, coastal setting,” he says. “Our highly trained team of up

to 35 staff take great pride in delivering world-class customer service at all times. Along with fantastic product and facilities, this year’s award is a tribute to them.” Since the Spa’s $4 million refurbishment in 2008, 18 treatment rooms now offer their own courtyard retreats and the overall design features elegant copper, timber and stone flourishes. Only the finest and most proven treatments are used, including the multi-award winning beauty brand Natura Bisse, which counts Sarah Jessica Parker, the Spanish Royals and Beyonce as devotees. Its signature Diamond Collection range promises to energise the skin, leaving it smooth, hydrated and radiant. Also available are a fully-equipped gymnasium, retail boutique, hair salon and lavish men’s and ladies’ private lounges. The gymnasium offers personal training sessions across a range of exercise equipment, as well as daily aqua and fitness classes. The Spa is open daily from 6.30am to 7pm. Treatments and fitness classes are available for a fee and need to be booked in advance, and don’t forget to allow time to enjoy the rest of the Spa’s facilities including spa, sauna and pools, complimentary with all treatment bookings. Feel free to drive into the resort’s main entrance and park in the main guest carpark. The Spa is a short walk into the resort from here. To book or for more information, please call 61 7 5449 3412 and ask for the Spa.

iron in the blood Darren Mercer, once an intrepid ironman is, as Helen Flanagan reports passing on his skills.

T

raining for a gruelling ironman race has been a way of life for the Mercer family. Darren and Dean Mercer first competed in the early 90s when they were growing up in the small town of Thirroul on the NSW South Coast. “I joined the Thirroul Surf Club when I was seven years old,” recalls Darren. “I enjoyed going to nippers and the beach became a way of life for my family. Training started seriously at 15 to become an ironman and career highlights include two Australian Ironman Championships; winner of the Coolangatta Gold; six times Kellogg’s Nutri Grain Ironman series champion; Australian team captain; and Australian representative.” The double act of brothers Dean and Darren Mercer dominated the event for almost two decades. Darren and his family moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2000 while he was still competing as a professional ironman. “It was lovely to be able to train somewhere warmer and we enjoyed the relaxed lifestyle change. “The children were little and starting school and preschool so we were able to meet lots of people through them.” Darren, a Jimmy Buffet fan and wife Tiana have two daughters Jordan 17, and Madison14 and live in a beachstyle home which they renovated two years ago. Madison attends Siena Catholic College and enjoys all types of dancing most afternoons while Jordan attends Sunshine Coast Grammar School, likes playing guitar and teaching herself new songs, although most of her time is taken up with training for the professional ironwoman series. “Our whole family is involved in surf life saving. Tiana, Jordan and myself have our bronze medallions and Madison has her surf rescue certificate. The Surf Life saving movement ultimately helps the community so by being involved we can help people stay safe at the beach. As lifesavers at Noosa we are often kept busy because it is an extremely popular holiday destination. Being a lifesaver and helping the community are very rewarding.” There’s been a baton change with Jordan now carrying the formidable family name into the new generation of competitors in the Ironman and Coolangatta Gold series, the latter of which was won by Darren in 1992 and Jordan now competes in. It involves a 47 kilometre race for the ironmen and 30 for the ironwomen. They swim and race on foot, paddle-board and surf-ski from Kurrawa Beach to Greenmount and back again. “It's pretty tough especially the first time,” says the voice of experience. ”Once you're in the race and competing against the other guys and you've got them next to you in the ski, it goes a lot quicker and it seems to sort of be finished almost

before you realise.” These days Darren is the head coach of Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club. He says the biggest mistake swimmers make is not swimming between the red and yellow flags, which mark the safest spot. "The novices, or people who don't come to the beach often, don't understand the dangers of rips, currents and big surf. Most rescues are outside the flags. People think inside the flags is too crowded and end up somewhere else which can be quite dangerous – the very reason why it’s not patrolled. Also make sure you use sunscreen and keep protected from the sun.” Darren loves the point breaks around the Noosa national parks. “The surfing is fantastic there when the swell is up. As a family we love to stroll Hastings Street, have coffee, some great food and even a little shop. Well the girls like that. What’s there not to like about Noosa?

topping the charts... Stephanie Brownlee

Stephanie Brownlee 17, is only a youngster in term of musical maturity, however her debut album is something that many of her contemporaries who have long established careers in the music industry envy. It’s hard to believe she’s only a teenager.

F

eaturing a powerhouse of songs that perfectly complement Stephanie’s stunning vocals, her debut album That Kind of Day, also features some of the best session players from the US and songs penned by some of the world’s most acclaimed songwriters such as Liz Rose (Taylor Swift), Brooke McClymont (The McClymonts) and co-writer Miley Cyrus. It’s a blend of country-esque style pop and rock that leaves Stephanie in a genre somewhere between Carrie Underwood and Avril Lavigne. European styled imported shoes... ALWAYS AT TOOTSIE’S

If you haven’t met the Queen and Prince Phillip, allow Helen Flanagan to introduce you to Phill Jackson who has.

B

ackpacking around Australian at 19, north London-born carpenter Phill Jackson decided he wanted to become a photographer and eventually move to Noosa.

With a university degree in his camera bag, it was head first into photography at crime scenes, post mortems, drug raids and anti-terrorism marches before taking the plunge as a freelancer, working in the travel industry and for several government agencies, and culminating in a British travel photography award. “Being able to capture the moment, in a way personal to me, along with shooting in my style and feel,” says Phil. “I have to fill a brief and exceed the client’s expectations. “I somehow got involved with celeb portraiture, not sure how but I enjoy it immensely: Ewan McGregor, Sienna Miller, Sir Michael Parkinson, Sir Richard Branson, Vinnie Jones, Robert Mugabe, The Queen and more, have all been a pleasure to work with. When it’s one-to-one they drop their guard…well not the Queen. They know that photographers have the power to make them look as good or as bad as we feel. Making beautiful images can sometimes be like trying to make a silk purse out a sow’s ear. “The next time I saw Sienna Miller she gave me a kiss and thanked me for the shoot. My wife still tells people I didn’t wash my face for a week. Not sure it was a week. “I worked with Sir Michael Parkinson aka Parky a lot. He had an intimate music club west of London and used to get huge names in the music industry, from UK Europe and the States to play, so it was great for me as was having dinner with the Spice Girls in a private roof top room in Café Royal Central. “The deputy prime minister’s office appointed me to be their official photographer and when I quizzed the DPM’s private secretary as to why I got the job he said ‘you’re the only one that can make John Prescott look good ie you can’t polish a turd but you seem to add glitter to it’.” Phill met Lindsay at high school, proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower at just 21 and with the renovation to their small Victorian cottage nearing completion, they married. In 2007 they migrated to Australia with Benjie who cost an extra $5,000, and Isaac who’s just turned 6 and has volunteered to keep watch on the turtles’ nests at Castaways Beach. His little sister who’s three in February, was born at Nambour Hospital, hence the Aussie name of Matilda, or as her little friends at Tadpoles at Sunshine Beach say “Tildy”. The Jackson family love camping, walks on the beach, swimming in the pool, kayaking in the river and all-time fave is an ice cream in Hastings Street. Phil and Lindsay enjoy paddle boarding and walks in the National Park and Phill, who loves surfing despite several trips to the hospital with different injuries, has recently returned from working for Cunard in the UK. “Steve Dunlop, a great mate and I were the official photographers on the Queen Elizabeth II. What fun running around on a hectic schedule. They wanted their pound of flesh and we gave it to them, shooting the beautiful interiors, portraits of the captain and senior staff, then the royals and celebrities who were on board. We shot hanging out of helicopters, as the ship arrived in a damp Southampton morning then the champagne launch as the Queen said those familiar words “I name this ship… “I was so pleased (not) that HRH the other half was there as Prince Phil shouts at me every time I have photographed him. I’m too close, taken too many images, taken too long, blah, blah. You can tell I’m not a fan.

“It was all great fun, but I was ready to get back to ‘chillaxed (chilled and relaxed) beautiful Noosa,” says Phil who after a month away is looking forward to bringing more of his Londonstyle magic to local wedding and portrait shots plus rebranding and more for Melbourne and Sydney clients. His annual shoot in Florida for Virgin and Universal Studios however will have to wait as family time beckons.

food a taste of summer.... W

hen we eat food in season, that’s the right time when it’s most full of flavour. So why do we complain that tomatoes and strawberries don’t taste like they did when we were kids? Because we buy them all year round, instead of in summer when along with blueberries, cherries, peaches, raspberries, rockmelons, lychees, watermelons, pineapples, asparagus, avocados, beetroot, peas, sweetcorn and zucchini flowers, they are at their peak, so luscious and full of flavour. Become a devotee of farmers’ markets, talk to the growers and be more aware of food that’s grown on your doorstep or environs. Try to understand ‘food miles' and why provenance, seasonality and availability have become increasingly important to chefs and diners with an environmental conscience and a discerning palate. It's all about sustainability and the energy that's expended in shipping produce when it’s not in season. The other benefit is that it supports local farmers and on a more selfish foodie level it's about really fresh produce and seasonal produce which indisputably tastes better. You can't beat something that was picked that morning.

Aztec fertility fruit avocados

The first avocado seeds were brought to Australia in 1840 and planted in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

T

he origin of avocados is Central and South America where the Aztecs called them ahuacatl, meaning ‘fertility fruit’. The top producers in the world are Mexico, Indonesia and the USA while Australia ranks 19th. Australian avocados are predominately grown in Queensland with the Hass variety, which is available almost all year round accounting for almost 80 per cent of all avocados grown. Avocados of full of nutrition being high in fibre, a healthy fat – monounsaturated, and have more potassium than a banana. Her Italian-born father Gennaro Mazzella, a chef and winemaker who owned a highly successful restaurant vineyard in Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, instilled in her a love of good food. For many years Giovanna lived in India, Malaysia, Japan and Thailand and pursued her passion to cook. Back in Australian she set up the very popular Cairns Cooking School with handson cooking classes in the commercial kitchen of historic Whitfield House. Now it’s the turn of visitors and Noosa locals to gain the benefit of her experience at the Noosa Cooking School, which has fitted-out in the gallery-like space at the Noosa Marina. “I am passionate about food and cooking and love showing people how simple it can be to create great food,” explains Giovanna who thinks the location is beautiful and the space also ideal for catered private parties, hen’s nights, team building, wine tastings and events such as book launches. “As a child my father taught me three important rules, which I have never forgotten: Always use the freshest produce, choose ingredients that are in season and if possible locally grown and most importantly to keep it simple and uncomplicated. Let the ingredients speak.” Day and evening classes include Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Spanish tapas, Japanese, Italian and beginners

The simple yet sophisticated modern Australian fare has a strong Mediterranean accent and all the hallmarks of Glenn Bowman, who’s back in Noosa and loving every moment. He’s particularly enamoured with the warm friendly vibe of Rickys, looking out from the kitchen to river and seeing lots of happy familiar faces gives him the greatest of pleasure. Glenn is one of the big names behind Noosa’s culinary ground swell moving from Sydney in 2000 where he was head chef at the Edge for five years and before that the Centennial Hotel. At Season in Hastings Street, he was fanatical about using fresh, local, organic produce and his commitment continued at his own much-lauded Sunshine Beach restaurant Alegria, when a guest on Foxtel’s cooking programs, at interstate cooking classes, numerous food festivals and now Rickys. For a long leisurely lunch, romantic dinner, corporate function or celebration, choose from the well-structured menu which includes tapas, as well as entrée mains and dessert. There are daily specials to reflect the catch of the day and new to the season, picked-thismorning produce. So what should to expect? A marriage of textures and flavours, balance and harmony such as the grilled sea scallops, wakame and taramasalata tart which Glenn has demonstrated on television. It is a tart shell filled with taramasalata and wakame, topped with seared sea scallops, garnished with Spanish herring roe, has orgasmic flavours and shows off his talents to the max. Ditto the BBQ Mooloolaba prawns, sauce ajo blanco, tomato avocado salsa; Moroccan spiced quail, rocket, ruby grapefruit, crispy eschalots;

burrata (a fresh Italian cheese), Noosa Reds vine-ripened tomatoes, Spanish white anchovies; and the crispy skin Atlantic salmon, medjool dates, cucumber, walnuts, mint yoghurt. The use of premium quality ingredients which allow flavours to speak for themselves is outstanding throughout. Mood lighting and textured surfaces create an intimate atmosphere by night, transforming the restaurant into an elegant playground. What a romantic setting for weddings whether cocktail-style or sitting down. raig, who grew up in Belli Park near Kenilworth, started his apprenticeship in Ma Mensa and completed RICOTTA it at Season. Kim, a Brisbane girl began her career at Couran Cove Resort followed by Noosa’s South Pacific Resort. They met at college, worked overseas and returned to the coast where Craig was sous chef followed by head chef at Coolum’s Harvest while Kim became known for her sensational desserts at Rickys. Since opening Pitchfork, the Galeas have built an enviable reputation for cooking exciting seasonal fare that’s cooked simply to accentuate the flavours of the fresh ingredients. “The name is intended to suggest a rustic feel but the theme is modern Australian and that includes an extensive gluten and vegetarian menu.” says Kim, adding a day off is precious time spending it with their young son Oscar. The popular restaurant, its convivial space plus the

bright and breezy service is so conducive to relaxing. Temptations are many and decisions difficult but be swayed by seared scallops, spicy sausage, apple, walnut, watercress salad; crispy SOUFFLE pork belly, green mango, bean shoot salad, chilli caramel dressing; pan fried snapper fillet, kipfler potato, prosciutto, prawn and fetta salad; crispy skin duck, asparagus, roast pumpkin, goats cheese, honey pine nut salad; and spanner crab linguini, chilli, lemon, garlic. Dessert aficionados will be in seventh heaven with vanilla bean cheesecake, caramelised mango, lime syrup, fresh raspberries; passionfruit roulade, Turkish delight ice cream, Persian fairy floss; and sticky date pudding, butterscotch icecream and kataifi wrapped pistachio stuffed dates. And for those preferring cheese, the selection is first class. St Agur, Buche d’affinois and the distinctive Victorian Maffra Cheddar are served with fig bread, lavosh, muscatels and quince.

He’s a beer obsessive, champion imbiber, rollicking writer and has gone the hard yards with this one, bringing you 174 beers from across Australia and washed up on our shores. He’s sniffed, sampled and scored, from boutique lovelies to massmarket brews. An entertaining guide to the different species of amber liquid, Beer features a detailed explanation of how beer is made and a short history of brewing, followed by a survey of as many beers as Duncan Powell could lay his hands on. HEART & SOUL, AUSTRALIA’S FIRST FAMILIES OF WINE BY GRAEME LOFTS, WILEY, $39.95 “The future of the Australian wine industry is in the hands of Australia’s first families of wine and others like them. This book brings to life the people, their histories, their wineries and their vineyards,” says James Halliday about the exclusive look behind cellar doors into the winemaking stories dedicated of twelve dedicated families, plus private photographs and information on vintages. From De Bortoli who influenced a nation to move from fortified wines to table wines as we know today; to Murray Tyrrell who protected his vines by shooting fireworks into the sky to break up hail and stealing cuttings from Penfolds; plus accounting for over 5500 hectares and more than 1200 years of collaborated winemaking experience.

Trends are often considered the pieces you buy one year and toss out the next when you spy something else in the glossy mags. Whether it’s a true blue palette for positive energy, an industrial look with a smattering of vintage and recycled whimsy, a bit of minimalist all-white to retain a pale yet colourless interesting look, or a getback-to-nature and a green environment with natural timbers and forest shade, isn’t it all about your space? Beach house, boho apar tment, bush retreat or a contemporar y house where the glass walls blur the sea view, who are the taste police? Maybe the national vernacular is eclectic after all.

Facing reality squarely... Tom is adamant that Noosa remains one of the most beautiful places on the Australian coastline: “It’s a place where property investment will excel in the future as it has in the past. At some point, more positive statistics and reports will motivate more buyers to jump in to what will then be a far more competitive market. My tip is to get in now while the competition is less.” There are numerous success stories of people buying extraordinary properties and selling them a few years later for double, however Peter Butt, the co-principal of Richardson & Wrench, says the truth behind the stories is those involved are leaders, not followers: “The thought keeps coming to ‘buy in gloom and sell in boom’. Today we are being bombarded with bad news, but in the midst of this, great opportunities are appearing in the property

the national average, billions are being spent on infrastructure and there will be benefits from the fast growing resources industry, producing spin-offs throughout the state. The figures also reflect recent tough times for sellers and the GFR eroding the capacity and confidence of a lot of buyers. Prices on the other hand have taken a beating, however Tom Offermann, principal of Tom Offermann Real Estate says: “there will always be exceptions, but most properties are now worth considerably less than what they were pre-GFC.” Tom’s advice is for those selling, they must be prepared to meet the market as buyers have lots of choice and less competition: “If you are selling and buying back into a similar market, the softer prices and timing should not make a huge difference. If you are investing, timing is everything. Just as the market 'overshot' on the way up, it will also 'undershoot' on the way down. Just as few sellers picked the absolute top of the market, the same will go for picking the absolute bottom. Getting it right could come down to luck, but mostly it will come down to good advice, accurate information and intuition. “The 'elephant in the closet' is the massive amount of cash that has been cautiously siphoned out of property and share sales over recent years and is now held in bank deposits. It is just sitting there, waiting for the right market signals before it flows back into real estate and pushes prices up.

market in Noosa. “Today some of the rare and tightly held positions are being placed on the market with owners cashing up to take advantage of other opportunities while others just simply having to sell. Many of us are swept along in negative treads like lemmings going over a cliff, but if we stopped, took one step back, looked at the overview and considered that cycles come and go. When the market turns, Noosa is one of the first to make strong gains. Noosa is undersupplied with property as a result of controlled town planning and geographically over-endowed with natural assets such as lakes, river ways, national parks, beautiful beaches and the most ideal climate in the world. These assets will always underpin a lifestyle that many aspire to.” Whilst the property market runs parallel with tourist numbers, the high Australian dollar has had an effect on domestic tourism. Peter Butt, whose company is also an accommodation specialist, thinks that the effect is more applicable to capital cities “It’s the outbound tourist numbers that benefit from the increased buying power of the $AUD. In the current economic environment more people are booking holidays in Noosa in the short term. Another consideration is the value of the international destination when you get there. All holidays can be expensive however In Noosa some of the best things to enjoy such as the 477 hectare Noosa National Park, are free.”

Homeowners want to create spaces for day-to-day easy living, that show a signature style true to their own lifestyle

Children’s author May Gibbs ventured into the Australian bush to create characters for her gumnut baby books, particularly from the genus Banksia.

B

anksia, named after the British botanist Joseph Banks, who discovered the genus at Botany Bay when he accompanied James Cook on the 1770 voyage of discovery, is actually the genus of over 70 species of small trees and large shrubs. Because they prefer a position in the sun plus sandy, well drained soils that’s not rich in nutrients, banksias grow well in south-east Queensland, as they do in most coastal areas of Australia. Gardening guru John Scomparin says they are very hardy and can withstand the harshest of conditions, even close to the ocean. “The colour of the flower heads ranges from yellow to red and many species flower over autumn and winter. Most respond to light pruning after flowering. They range in size from low-growing shrubs to trees approximately 20 metres tall. For example, some species like Banksia Ericifolia, are known for their spectacular flower heads, which produce high

Befriend the banksia men...

volumes of nectar and attract many birds and even small mammals to feed off them. In that respect, they are excellent plants to encourage native animals to the garden.” Varieties to look out for include: Banksia Giant Candles, a medium shrub to five metres with deep orange flower heads; Banksia Integrifolia is hardy, grows well in coastal areas, tolerates salt spray, can grow up to 20 metres but usually smaller and has dark green leaves with a silvery underside which adds to its appeal; and Banksia Serrata with its rugged bark and serrated leaves giving it a distinctive appearance that has great appeal in a landscape. It may grow from two to 12 metres and is adaptable to most soils but does require good drainage. The flower heads are greenish yellow and open from summer to winter. John Scomparin and Andrew Taylor’s knowledge of plants and landscaping is so extensive they have extended their Mary Street Noosaville business creating RNS (Rock ‘n’ Stone) Lifestyle Noosa. They take the complete angst out of designing and revamping by offering homeowners many years of industry experience and an impressive studio display of natural stone pavers, pebbles, tiles, architectural veneering, as well as many innovative garden and lifestyle products from home-wares, pots and statues to whimsical antiques. They are both uniquely qualified to provide the right solution to individual design and specification requirements and like many of their clients, are concerned with both form and function. “Homeowners want to create spaces for day-to-day easy living, that show a signature style true to their own lifestyle, however they are also concerned with the environment and sustainable living,” John explains.” Here in the sub tropics, many will invariably have a preference for pavers over a water dependent lawn, for example, and will seek our guidance on aspects such as heat absorption and durability.”

Nude - Glenis Clelland

NoosaStyleLiving

A collaboration between Noosa North Shore artist Glenis Clelland and poet author Mocco Wollert has produced a delightful hard cover featuring Glenis’s life nudes and accompanying words by Mocco.

ife drawing has always been central to Glenis Clelland’s artistic development from her days at the Brisbane College of Art (now QUT), to her fashion career - winning the Queensland Fashion Awards in 1976- and to many years as a costume designer with Brisbane Arts Theatre and a ongoing artistic pursuits. For most artists the relationship between artist and model has always been an interpretation of the various interplay between ideas and feelings that allow the artist to process what they see and what they feel. “I draw the lines I feel not necessarily the lines I see. Therefore my life drawing has always had a strong narrative sometimes formed by my relationship (not sexual) with the model- ie I have to like the model I draw! My choice of model is usually not the 'perfect' figure but rather one -whether male or female- where I can find a hidden dimension and see the real nakedness resulting in sensitive and sometimes sensual paintings and drawings”, says Glenis. Mocco writes about her life experiences - either real or imagined. Mocco was born in Germany and writes in several languages. Arriving in Australia as a young bride with no English she started expressing her emotions and feelings in poems which were later published in several books. In these two new books about love and sensualities her words are evocative and sometimes 'tantalising and titillating' and yet easily understood. The poems have been described as 'gently erotic' - meaning you can interpret the meaning depending on your own life experiences... so readers can read into the words what they like!!! By describing the poems as 'accessible' it means most people can understand and interpret as they wish! “This is an unusual collaboration of two artistic forms - the artist and the author (different to illustrating words or writing to

interpret images) and I feel gives these books a unique appeal” said Glenis. “Between us - both being married for 40 and 50 years! - we have a lot of years of experience in the subject of love and sensualities. This is a celebration of two mature age women depicting age is no barrier to loving and sexuality.” For info contact: Glenis Clelland 0413 016979

n inherited gene on the creative side, a passion for life and our amazing environment, and lots of time and patience are just some of the ingredients that have contributed to Chris’ success as an artist. He began the journey as a child, encouraged by his mother Norma, also a very talented artist. It was never an obvious career option from school, more of a hobby for a lot of years. Chris ventured down many different paths growing up. His discovery in later years that he could paint pictures and sell them was an amazing revelation. An absolute dream job. Drawing on the love for nature and wildlife as inspiration for this new and exciting path, was the beginning of a very rewarding but challenging future. Mastering the fine art technique has taken Chris many years, understanding all the ingredients to make a picture work, understanding light, shade and movement, also becoming very attuned with a camera has helped in the pursuit to create that masterpiece. Chris is currently venturing into different styles and subjects allowing his creative juices to flow into diversity. Water is one of his passionate themes. His work is very much sought after and graces the walls of homes across the globe. Chris is based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Twelve years after her memorable wedding atop elephants, Ellie Sinclair-Guy returns to Zimbabwe.

walk on the wildside... Walking the young lions daily at Antelope Park

IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT FOR OKANUI’S ELLIE SINCLAIRGUY AND HER HUSBAND AL AND SUCH A THRILL WHEN THEY, PLUS NIECE LUCY AND LONG TIME FRIEND ZAC, ARRIVED AT ANTELOPE PARK, GWERU FOR A 14 DAY VOLUNTEERING ADVENTURE TO HELP REHABILITATE LIONS BACK INTO THE WILD.

hat a beautiful 3500 acre park and full of wild life including 90 lions in a breeding program aimed at producing healthy animals that were adapted to the wilds and able to survive as a breeding pride,” an excited Ellie explains. “Our experience was truly amazing, interacting with the lions, walking, touching and feeding Africa's most noble beast. Something you can only imagine experiencing. Two hours each morning and afternoon we walked with the lions, which ranged from eight months to 18 months. Bottle feeding the young was fun as we also got to play with them, running around their yard with a blanket like idiots. All three would try and hang on so as not to get left behind. “With 30 horses and four orphaned elephants to ride, spend time and even play a game of polo cross with, this was special. The day started at 6am walking with the lions and finished at 6pm. In between chores included proofing the boundary fencing, cleaning enclosures and preparing meals, that’s chopping a whole beast into large portions with an axe. Gruesome. “Our accommodation was a large ensuited tent, overlooking the lake, right across from our favourite eight month old lions which we'd call and they’d answer. We were spoilt with meals,

eating the same as paying guests and joining them in the openair dining room. Laundry was done, beds made, rooms cleaned and everything included in our very reasonable volunteering fee. It was so hard to say goodbye, a bittersweet experience as we were heading off on another adventure. “Lake Kariba was our starting point on the Zambezi River for an eight day 300km canoeing expedition to Mozambique. We had two guides and every provision packed so high that as the steerer, I could not even see my husband in front. “It was fun dodging crocs, hippos, large logs, elephants and other wildlife interested in getting a close look at six humans invading their habitat. Late afternoon, the perfect camping spot on one of the many islands was found and as we bathed using a bucket, the guides prepared stunning meals ‘Our last day was the hardest, with August winds, waves breaking in the middle of the river and hippos right in our path. Amazingly we finished without tipping and as much as we loved every moment, we looked forward to Victoria Falls and luxury accommodation. “Waiting with no shelter at the dusty air strip, exhausted, dirty and still in our paddling outfits, we were pleased to hear our plane finally arrive - two hours late. On its third attempt to land the plane crashed. The hysterical African pilot was screaming from what I thought was shock but it wasn’t. She thought she’d lose her job. Hours later another plane was sent and for the first time ever Victoria Falls airport was kept open after dark. Next day we climbed down a 300 foot gorge, jumped into inflatable boats and paddled the grades one to five rapids of the mighty Zambezi. “After all the adrenalin-pumping action we went to Kenya to luxury camps at Meru National Park, home of Elsa the lioness of Born Free fame, Laikipia Conservatory, home to the Samburu people and the Massai Mara where the yearly migration of wilderbeast is in the millions. “And at the end of each day there’s nothing quite like a gin and tonic with some of the most beautiful animals on this planet in the foreground.” Where to next? “We both have dreams of driving our own dog sled through Norway ..... we have done crazier things, so why not?” says Elle.

teeing off Hamilton Island style... I may not be a golfer, KAYLENE MURRAY WRITES but my mother has been an avid one for over fifty years. So I do know a bit about golf courses and the ins and outs of life on the course. My mother and her dedicated group of golfing friends have been discussing the subject for most of my life.... and, I have been listening ‘intently’ all that time. I promise.

S

o when invited to visit the magnificent Hamilton Island recently, I was glad to be taken on a tour of the beautiful Hamilton Island Golf Course on nearby Dent Island. I did giggle when asked if I would like to play a round of golf while on the island, and for the first time in my life I was a bit disappointed not to be able to take advantage of the offer. I should explain

that I am totally uncoordinated and unsporty (just ask my disappointed mother), so to be truly honest, I was much more thrilled to be taking the journey and savouring the beauty of the destination - and the tour by streamlined mega-buggy. Golfing guests travel from Hamilton Island by luxury ferry and enjoy a short ten minute cruise across Dent Passage to Dent Island. On arrival they are greeted on the dock and then chauffeured up the steep incline to the architecturally intriguing golf course's Club House by golf cart. On my visit it was by high-end Audi (Audi Race Week advantages). The Hamilton Island Golf Course Club House sits prominently, high atop a ridge offering stunning views out over the golf course, Dent Passage and across to Hamilton Island and the wide blue horizon. The club house was designed by the same architects who created the super luxurious Qualia Resort on Hamilton Island, and constructed with beautiful stone and rich timber accent pieces. The par 71 championship course designed by champion golfer Peter Thomson, measures 6,120 metres (6692 yards). The only championship island golf course in Australia, it has been designed to challenge all levels of golf enthusiasts, from resort guests to professional golfers. The course is designed as

a series of holes strung along the ridges and played across steep valleys and the courses design works with the natural landform, with generally broad fairways taking the “line of least resistance”, avoiding the steeper, more sensitive areas. The course’s design, location, facilities and views, are sure to challenge and delight weekend golfers and professionals alike. So whether you are a pro, novice or scratch golfer, you can savour the magnificent views from each and every hole. Whilst touring the course and trying not to talk too loudly while players were hitting through, we came across a group of players who had stopped to admire the view. As they explained "where else could you play golf with a panorama as magnificent as this?" Whether you

are a golfer or not, a trip across to the golf course is well worth the journey, to have lunch and take in the magnificent vista or laze on the balcony with a cool cocktail or beer discussing your day or your game.. Apart from some of the local wildlife starring on the course, it’s also not unusual to see other stars on Hamilton Island - the celebrities and the beautiful star filled sky at night on this island paradise. Recently American legend Oprah Winfrey flew in with a ‘few friends’ for a very quick visit and a true taste of Queensland’s luxurious tropical north. Perhaps the real reason she chose it as her first stop in Australia had a lot to do with Curtis Stone preparing the fresh seafood for lunch on Whitehaven Beach. Hamilton Island's chairman, Sandy Oatley said “I am thrilled to welcome Ms. Winfrey, her team and the lucky audience members to Hamilton Island. We are delighted Ms. Winfrey decided to make this her first stop on their Australian itinerary, where they will get to enjoy Queensland’s beautiful Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. We know everyone is as excited as we are to see the final show when it airs in January. "

Why did you move to Noosa? With a background in marketing and media, I moved from NSW’s central coast 20 years ago. I thought Noosa would be a nice place to raise my son Dane. That was 20 years ago and I still remember seeing the 10-year old stand on a surfboard with a look of confidence and achievement. When did you discover you had health issues and was that the trigger for Frangipani Dreams? That was about 14 years ago. I had to cope with being a single mum and spending an agonising four-and-a-half years in hospital on dialysis while waiting for a kidney donor. In-between times I was a volunteer at the Emergency Relief and Noosa Youth Service and became aware there were many local residents facing difficulties, particularly during the Christmas season. Frangipani Dreams was conceptualized whilst receiving a transplant. I wanted to give back, say thank you to my donor and help those who are suffering, irrespective of religion, race, or illness. Unfortunately, two years ago my first transplant rejected and I’m still dialysing at Noosa Hospital for six hours, three times a week. I have everything crossed for a transplant in the near future. What are some of the achievements during Frangipani Dreams’ ten years? I believe that through thoughts and actions of loving kindness, unity and compassion, we can make a positive impact on our world. We’ll assist people who are experiencing financial or personal hardship, are in hospital or rehabilitation and are elderly, disadvantaged or suffering a terminal illness - even lonely. Frangipani ‘wishes' are identified through referrals from local oncology wards and cancer care groups and this year we’ve granted six wishes but sadly two have passed away. This year our goal for the Frangipani Dream Christmas 2010 Hamper Appeal is to support 1500 families, 300 up on last year. The most beautiful action in the world is to love, the second is to give.

What have been some of the more memorable moments? When I was giving my first Christmas hamper out 10 years ago, the look of shock and gratefulness was priceless and unforgettable. Granting wishes for the terminally ill or disadvantaged is so hard but knowing that you have helped someone live a dream is something that sits very close to my heart plus we are leaving a memory for a family so that makes it more memorable. Who are some of the celebrities who’ve helped you? I’ve met the most incredible people from all walks of life: Justin Herald, Jeff McMullen, Ian Thorpe, Pat Rafter, Evonne Cawley, Peter Brock, Julian Wilson and Richard Branson. I’m very honoured and proud to have crossed paths with them. How can people help Frangipani Dreams? Sponsors play an important role in Frangipani Dreams. They keep us together. Volunteers are definitely the biggest backbone. Everyone is a volunteer who gives freely of their time to help others. If you would like to become a volunteer or a sponsor, visit www.frangipanidreams.com We do not receive government funding and all monies raised from events go towards our Christmas hampers. What's on your wish list? I am excited to watch something that was a dream grow and flourish. In the long term I’d love to open a retreat where people who are unwell can spend a day or more. My personal wish is to fly with Richard Branson into space. Dreams do come true. You just have to dream big, do everything with passion then watch your dreams unfold before you. Remember a big vision creates magic and possibilities. In the short term I cannot wait to see my son Dane who’s now 27 and will be home for Christmas. He’s a teacher in Japan, is a married to beautiful Mio and three weeks ago they became proud parents to beautiful Kirra Moana Sweetman, my first grandchild.
