Welcome to our wonderful, warming Winter issue of NOOSA Style Magazine...

welcome

What a year we are having. It seems as though the universe has chosen 2009 to make a point. We seem to be reeling from one disaster to another. Fires, floods, global economic meltdown, and now - the dreaded Swine flu. Thankfully, Australians are a resilient bunch - let's not forget our humble beginnings - deportation, isolation, adversity and deprivation. What happened next? Well, that's the point - as a nation - we worked together to survive, nurture, thrive and prosper - and we always do. So, savour the season, treasure your family and friends, seek out possibilities, and get on with your life - one wonderful day at a time. Take the time to support your local businesses, suppliers, service providers, restaurants, fashion industry, manufacturers and tourism industry. Winter in Queensland is such a wonderful time, with its beautiful blue days and cool, crisp nights. Why not join us for a well-earned break? There are some amazing accommodation deals available, and airlines are offering fantastic ticket prices to get you here from interstate. If you're a local, why not take advantage of a romantic weekend getaway with your partner; or take a little family break with the children and spend some quality time together exploring all the region's natural assets. And, for those within the easy drive zones of S E Queensland and Nthn New South Wales - well, we're the perfect short break destination.. The days may be getting a little cooler but that's the perfect time to go shopping. New season fashion is getting hotter by the day and local boutiques are full of the latest looks, styles and colours - just perfect for choosing a new outfit for dining at one of our local restaurants or cafes. The days are still prefect for lazing on the balcony or wandering along the shoreline. And, a drive in the countryside or up to the Blackall Mountain range is always an excellent adventure. Winter is also the perfect time to indulge in comfort foods and luscious red wines, a perfectly brewed coffee and a decadent dessert. And for those looking to renovate, decorate or relocate, we offer some spectacular design and living options in our Winter issue.

A WARTS-AND-ALL BIOGRAPHY ABOUT DAVID WILLIAMSON’S LIFE BEHIND THE MARITAL CURTAIN, WRITTEN BY WIFE KRISTIN, WAS RELEASED JUST PRIOR TO THE WORLD PREMIERE OF HIS LATEST PLAY

LET THE SUNSHINE.

Raising the

D

avid Williamson had no desire to write his autobiography. Publishers pushed but he wasn’t interested. Eventually he said, “If you want a biographer ask Kristin. She’s been a tough investigative journalist for the National Times, an author and has kept journals and records of my family history for decades. She’ll ferret out the truth.” Kristin has a background in theatre, education and history and her novels include Tanglewood, The Jacaranda Years, Treading on Dreams and Women on the Rocks. David has written more than 40 plays from Don’s Party to Emerald

City, screenplays for 17 films, for thirty-five years been at the collision point of art and politics and a friend of many significant artistic and political figures of his generation such as Clifton Pugh, Peter Weir, Gough Whitlam, Peter Carey, Bruce Beresford and Paul Keating. Kristin says he as “obsessed” about writing today as he was when he started in 1968. His works have appeared on Broadway and the West End; he has won numerous awards; is currently working on a movie set in South Africa; and the world premiere of Let the Sunshine, directed by longtime friend Sandra Bates and starring William Zappa, Georgie Parker, Andrew McFarlane and Kate Raison, has broken all box office records at Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre. Behind the Scenes (published by Viking) is Kristin’s ultimate and intimate portrait of her husband, their marriage and frank details about David’s infidelity when he left the family for eight hours before realizing his mistake. “It was an awful time and profound for us to relive these days,” Kristin says, acknowledging it could have been the end of their marriage but she forgave him, albeit not straight away.

The book talks about the autobiographical nature of most of his plays; how she’s had to develop a thick skin when many of the couple’s private moments, funny stories and lines have been relived on stage; and despite the fact that David hates answering questions, there had to be a certain amount of probing. Kristin’s perspective of being married to a famous man is also told. When the couple met in 1971 during the production of The Removalist, both were married to other partners David said he was allowed to read the book before publishing for factual errors only and although it made him “squirm” at times “it is a well told story…a page turner”. In 1996, the Williamsons moved to Noosa, an area that has changed a lot since holidays in the 1970s and early 1980s, although as David alludes to in Let the Sunshine, the village atmosphere has been retained. The play is a comedy about two ideologically opposed couples who move to Noosa and are forced to get on when their children marry and have a child. “It’s a return of Romeo and Juliet,” explains David. “It’s the Capulets and the Montagues but my star-crossed lovers don’t come to a horrendous end. Comedy is based not on life-shattering events but ordinary people muddling through their problems.

curtain... The story arose from the Williamson’s five children, four of them married and 10 grandchildren. “It struck me that there is such a thing as ‘grandchild competition’ where the different grandparents compete for time with the kids. One lot of grandparents might see them all the time and the other lot are saying ‘It’s our grandchild too’. There’s also a heavy dose of self-parody, after all you can’t satirise other people without sending yourself up.” David is patron of fabulous Noosa Longweekend festival, he a nd Kristin are co-founders and both will be in the limelight again this year. The Queensland Theatre Company presents a rehearsed play reading of Let the Sunshine. It will be directed by Jon Halpin and staged at The J. Behind the Scenes will be under the spotlight when Kristin and David talk to creator of the international Ubud Writers Festival and take the audience on a luminous life journey, through the world of film and stage. For full details on the Noosa Longweekend, which runs from 19 to 28 June visit: www.noosalongweekend.com or telephone The J: (07) 5455 4455.

THE PLAY IS A COMEDY ABOUT TWO IDEOLOGICALLY OPPOSED COUPLES WHO MOVE TO NOOSA AND ARE FORCED TO GET ON WHEN THEIR CHILDREN MARRY AND HAVE A CHILD.

magazines, said they thought the festival was the best in Australia, ditto the degustations. Their comments were echoed up by some of Australia’s most acclaimed chefs such as Matt Moran, Philip Johnson and Mat McConnell. “It was exciting and rewarding to hear how much people get out of the experience and great news for Noosa to have such top talent talking about the strength and quality of regional Queensland’s restaurants being better than anywhere else in the country,” an elated festival director Jim Berardo said. Festival co-director Greg O’Brien’s close

tival success attention to detail of the Food Trails produced another stunning result with guest chefs participating in the Seafood, Asian and Ginger Trails on Friday. “These trails offer something truly unique for guests and have definitely become signature events that draw people to the festival. The Ginger Trail was new to the line up this year and very well received,” says Greg. The Settler’s Cove and Audi hospitality pavilions were a place to people watch and be seen plus enjoy great viewing for Saturday and Sunday afternoon concerts and respite from the action in the grand marquee and the bustle in the village-like atmosphere of the food and wine stalls. In the Critic’s Cooking Competition, the Adelaide Advertiser’s Tony Love won the People's Choice Award and the Courier Mail’s Lizzie Loel won Chef's Choice Award with a free range chicken dish, swooping the accolade from Matt Preston, the winner for the last three years. Wrapping up the festival was Sunday afternoon’s impressive performance by Kate Ceberano. Behind the scenes the atmosphere of the festival is always relaxed, so much so egos and any notions of being in a competitive environment are left at home. The person charged with not only making the culinary side of things work like clockwork but chase recipes, check the menu is balanced with no clashes, order ingredients, source unusual produce and organize storage, additional chefs, dishies, helpers and other necessities for the smaller events is maestro Shane Bailey. He ensured there were 8,000 canapés for the opening party, heaven-knows-how-many portions of beef, salmon, prawns and whatever else for Sunday’s picnic plus all the other components associated with a dish before it was even plated. Twenty sets of whisks, bowls, wooden spoons, pots, chopping boards, frypans etcetera, plus special requests such as woks and steam aids were ordered, sorted and used for food trails, cooking classes, lifestyle lunches and demos. Add 16,000 glasses for wine tastes, crockery, cutlery, barbecues, recycling bins and more. And before the accolades could begin, Shane the executive chef at berardo’s also had to maintain his cooler-then-cool attitude, even when the heat was turned up high at the degustations. There were three nine-course degustations for 120 guests each night at berardo’s, with chefs working cheek by jowl in equally acclaimed company to create 27 splendiferous dishes that were matched by 42 wines. Shane’s Noosa spanner crab ravioli in a Noosa Red consommé was one of the applauded dishes. After the event 60,000 tonne of infrastructure and staging was removed, associated paraphernalia returned from whence it came, organizers breathed a sigh of satisfied relief and vowed to be back next year even bigger and better.

Dining out in Noosaville... THE NOOSA RIVER FORESHORE, GYMPIE TERRACE AND ENVIRONS EXUDE A CASUAL ELEGANCE AND RELAXED AMBIENCE. elicans flap their wings and thrust their beaks under water looking for a feed or join the seagulls onshore hoping for leftovers from family barbecues and picnics. With its smorgasbord of restaurants, cafes and take-outs, the area around Gympie Terrace is a culinary tour of the world. At the River House, internationally acclaimed chef Nathan Nichols will carry on the restaurant’s tradition of using the best produce the region can supply and create a daily menu around it. Sirocco is another exciting new experience. It delivers the exotic flavours, aromas and colours of the Mediterranean rim. Chef Cainan Johnson promises to dazzle your taste buds as you drink in the views across the river. You can watch the action of the river from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club where bistro-style fare, snack, cool music and sailing going hand-inhand. impress diners with the very best of local preferably organic produce and first class service. The Villa Noosa has something for everyone including great pub grub; Noosa’s Organika has fine food and great espresso plus a large range of certified organic producers; and don’t forget the Farmers Market is held every Sunday morning at the Australian Rules Football Ground. The precinct near the river also has numerous sassy boutiques, pamper palaces, contemporary-style art galleries, five-star resorts, cosy apartments and comfortable backpackers. A few original workman’s cottages are much sought-after for razing in favour of multi million dollar villas and apartments. In the 1920s, Noosaville was a sleepy hollow, except for the first café in the area, called The Favourite, which was owned by the Massouds. It became a magnet for troops during World War 11 when they drove their amphibious army ducks out of the river to collect their fresh fish and chips, cooked on a tiny wooden stove. Today Maisie’s is on the site of The Favourite on Gympie Terrace. The Noosa River is home to the Riverlight Ferry wends it way from Tewantin to Hastings Street and return, picking up and dropping off passengers. Chocoholic heaven.. . WHEN IT COMES TO SUPREME INDULGENCE AND EXEMPLARY QUALITY, YOU CAN COUNT ON COCOA CHOCOLAT. very chocolate, truffle and piece of confectionery from Cocoa Chocolat is irresistible. Not surprising really, given each piece is hand made using Belgian couverture chocolate. Louisa Raven’s foray into the world of chocolate began in Holland when she was seven years old and taught by her chocolatiere mother:“I’ve always loved chocolate and dreamed of one day owning my own chocolate shop. Over the years I’ve learned new techniques and worked in Holland and Belgium under two master chocolatiers. “My second love was travel and as a stewardess for British Airways I visited most destinations around the world. During one of the trips I met Malcolm in Muscat, in the Sultanate of Oman. We

E

married three years later, moved to America and at a dinner party I served my handmade chocolates. This was the start of a small chocolate business.” After moving to Queensland to be closer to her brother, Louisa and Malcolm bought the Eumundi Hardware Store and transformed it into a huge environmentally friendly, state-of-theart, purpose built, climate controlled boutique factory. Cocoa Chocolat had a home. “We use only the best quality ingredients from around the globe, locally grown macadamia nuts, ginger and exotic fruits plus King Island cream, butter and honey. This level of excellence produces unsurpassed flavours that are captured in every piece. It’s pure quality and sheer indulgence.” While customers are watching Louisa create the modern and classic delights, some using the treasured recipes from her mother and salivating over what to choose, a DVD explains the processing of cocoa beans into chocolate in a free trade environment.

On red alert...

grapefruit

With its characteristically bright red flesh, the sweetest tasting fruit of the grapefruit family, the red variety is not to be confused with the very different ruby red. he big red sweet member of the grapefruit family does not have sour overtones of the yellow and white varieties. Skin colour varies from a pale yellow-orange with a slight blush to an intense red-orange, the rind is thin and smooth and harvested at peak with high sugar to acid ratio from March to November, it’s an incredibly rich source of antioxidants. Varieties include Star, Rio, Ray and Flame Proven to be successful in lowering bad cholesterol, the red grapefruit is more effective than white grapefruit varieties. In addition, the fibre found in red grapefruit and high levels of Vitamin C can reduce risk of free radical damage implicated in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Closely rivalling the orange, it is rare to get so much Vitamin C in just one piece of fruit, with just half a red grapefruit containing an amazing 70 per cent of the recommended daily intake. “An unique fruit with greater benefits than those just from antioxidants, the red grapefruit helps to maintain a healthy weight and is an excellent fruit for those treating the early stages of high cholesterol with diet related changes,” says certified nutritionist and dietician. Joanna McMillan Price, adding that compared to white grapefruit, red grapefruit’s nutrient, lycopene converts to Vitamin A in the body. “Crucial for healthy eyes, bones, hair, teeth and skin as well as general immunity, absorption of lycopene can be maximised by incorporating red grapefruit into a salad with an oil-based dressing.” Look for locally grown fruit that is bright, smooth and has a reasonably unblemished skin; for a greater amount of juice choose fruit that’s heavy for its size and has a thin skin; and once picked it’s fully ripe and ready to eat, juice or combine in dishes. Kept at room temperature in a cool dark place out of plastic bags, expect fruit to last for approximately one week. To prolong, store in the crisper compartment of the fridge

Crochet bodices are incorporated into ultra-short dresses with cinched waists as well as into loose-fitting, ankle-length dresses with a folksy feel. Lace returns to trim hems or peek out from beneath airy flounce dresses paired with biker jackets or suede gilets. A bright parade of prints to be worn, expanses of flowers and optical graphics, speckled flowers on cloths to create ethereal and fresh dresses in silk, cotton and printed broderie anglaise material. The tones are reminiscent of the works of Frida Kahlo, evoking positivity and cheerfulness. Assuredness and energy abound once again in the paisley designs that animate diaphanous chiffons and in the English country garden style prints where a bright mix of flowers bursts onto jersey pieces. The decorated dresses offer an eveningwear line full of high spirits and charm, to be paired with chunky accessories and mini cardigans.

perfectly. The rage was for the stylish lady to carry a doll dressed exactly like herself, complete with matching bag for her miniature companion. Also popular was the use of different materials including mother of pearl and bolder colours. The discovery of King Tutankhamen's tomb inspired Egyptian art on purses. War times of the 40s saw new austerity in clothing, including handbags. Metal frames, zips, leather, and mirrors were in short supply so manufacturers used plastic and wood. In decades to follow, bags from the French houses such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Hermes, fabrics such as silk and reptile skin were vogue and it wasn’t too long before bags were everywhere. Every conceivable style and design to complement every outfit. Every price tag from the little cheapy, the bold and the beautiful, clutch, tote and fabulous fakes to the outrageously priced ultimate luxe, and oodles in-between. Designers jumped on the bag-wagon, proliferating with today’s trendies that err on side of dark and exotic from soft suede to mock croc and patent python in a delish palette of berry and plum. And girls it seems, can’t get enough. Does this suggest that fashionistas have fetishes for bags instead of shoes?

wherearetheynow? THIRTEEN YEARS AGO LYNNE TANNER’S FABRIC DESIGN WAS REPRODUCED AS THE COVER OF LEONIE PALMER’S NOOSA COOK BOOK. oday her bold yet harmoniously coloured textiles have been commissioned and coveted all over the world. What is your background, when and how did you into textile printing and design? In Sydney I worked as a surface/pattern designer for Crown Corning glassware, a graphic designer in advertising and promotions and an art director for Woman's Day magazine. I fell into textile printing and design when husband Matthew and I came to Noosa in the early 90s. I started with painting wall finishes and stencilled borders in restaurants and people’s homes then a friend introduced me to fabric ink, so I applied the stencil skills to fabric. I was amazed at the results and the freedom that I had compared to the computer generated design I was used to. I also loved making useful things that people could enjoy in their homes. Describe some early successes. The first thing I painted was a tablecloth and napkins to match a rose motif on a friend’s dinner setting. Then it became my own take on tablecloths depicting food such as , stuffed olives, grapes, even fruit salad borders and an Italian tossed

T

salad which became a signature design and was purchased by many overseas buyers. Then along came the big frangipani designs and Monstereo leaves which are still popular today. Exhibitions and commissions? I have exhibited at the Noosa Regional Gallery; been featured at the REIQ Brisbane Fashion Awards in the wearable art section; was a finalist in the Brisbane Memento Awards for tourism products; exhibited fabric panels at the Cooroy Butter Factory’s furniture expo; and also exhibited at the Designex Interior Design Fair in Brisbane where I came into contact with various design businesses such as Maggi Eckardt Interiors who commissioned me for some challenging projects in Australia and overseas. What is your philosophy on colour? I have always had an eye for colour and have never been afraid to use it. There is a trend at the moment to use ‘safe’ bland tones but my feeling is that if you cleverly blend colour you can achieve a pleasant personal harmony and a ‘good feel’ environment. I don't always follow fashionable trends but I do like to produce individual pieces which fit a person's personality. Trends come and go, but my pieces stay forever. What are you working on currently? I am always reinventing my approach and recently I’ve moved to more 3D products. With the help

of Matthew, who is upholstering my fabric, I am exploring the possibilities presented by furniture especially chairs. We enjoy taking a forlorn, abandoned chair and ‘upcycling’ it into a thing of beauty for our new Chair Gallery within the Social Fabric studio. There is great satisfaction in changing something old and giving it a new lease of life with a fresh look. The chair shape and era dictates the pattern and choice of colour-ways. The results have been fantastic and I enjoy working with a variety of styles. Anything from regal to retro, dining chairs or armchairs – it's all on display in the showroom. Do you conduct classes? Classes for beginners are so much fun. I love imparting all my knowledge of the medium and seeing the student go home with a usable finished item he/she has created. The more advanced workshop classes encourage people to expand their design talents with more personal projects and home décor items such as wall hangings, cushion covers, lampshades, table runners, tablecloths and even designing fabrics lengths for clever creations. Why do you love Noosa and why is it an inspiration for your work? After living in the UK and travelling through Europe and North Africa for a year, Noosa is a great place to come home to. I’ve developed the ideas I’ve acquired overseas and really appreciate the quality of light that makes my rich colour palette sit so comfortably.

The language of art connects people through beauty, inspiration and creativity; it reminds us of our unique ability to experience true joy which is the essence of our soul. Rather than thinking about art as merely a painting on a wall or a sculpture, a redefinition of art is thinking of it as a conduit to a sensual response. Art entertains our senses, defines our humanity and provides a path beyond the mundane. Julie Carrington, owner of The Jewellery Gallery @ Carrington's, has truly taken this to heart as she explores how many ways she can introduce beauty and joy into the world around her via her innate love of art in all its forms. The Jewellery Gallery features artisans who dedicate themselves to producing unique handmade jewellery designs that can only be called ‘wearable art’. Julie has yet again taken another leap into the world of showcasing amazing art pieces, as The Jewellery Gallery becomes a launching pad for new and talented local artists. "We want to offer a space for local artists to exhibit their art. We invite everybody to come along and be entertained, enjoy and be inspired by the art itself, " says Julie with excitement. We will be showcasing local artists such as Leigh Karen Joyce, her paintings remind us of childhood joy, romance and love; there are no dark places in Leigh’s world. She draws inspiration from her love of children, flowers, birds, animals and all things that move her. Senka Thwaites

Spoilt for choice...

WHEN IT COMES TO DYNAMISM, SUPER SAVVY SENKA THWAITES HAS BAGS OF IT. wenty years ago in Perth, Senka began her retail career. After working in various stores she opened her own shop in the Margaret River called Memories. It looked like an up-market mini department story, its best sellers were expensive yet very affordable jewellery, handbags and sunglasses and during her eight year tenure, she won a Telstra award for small business and the seed to success was well and truly sown. “You spoil me Senka” became such an oft-used

T

phrase, that ‘Spoilt’ seemed a logical brand name, so was trade marked. After four months of ‘me-time’ in Noosa, Senka, master builder hubby Darin, sons Adam and Brandon, and two poodles Mocha and Latte, her “stress relievers”, made the bold move to the east coast. “Wholesaling is totally different to retail but I dabbled in it years ago and imported various items, mostly jewellery. I started out of a small warehouse in Noosaville and it grew quickly so after three years I now have two warehouses based in the funky area of Gateway Drive. “I import mainly from China, but have jewellery and accessories from Hong Kong, pearls from Spain, Swarovski crystal jewellery from Korea and Paris, wallets from Japan and winter bags from India.” Senka is hands-on with all aspects of her products, especially handbag design. “We have a factory in China and a member of staff looks after quality control. Too many wholesalers buy off the shelf and it all becomes very similar, plus it’s a very cut throat industry.” Spoilt products are distributed to 600 stores nationally and in New Zealand, a resort in Brunei and a fashion store in London, plus her first concept store in Noosaville. Senka is aiming for a Spoilt concept shop in every major shopping centre in Australia. Her current estimate of lines is about 350 in jewellery, leather handbags, fashion handbags, shoes and evening bags. “I have the best value for money handbags in the market because I go for turnover not huge profits. They look expensive but are so affordable.”

Come to SKETA for the full fashion experience. Australian designed and made suits, skirts and silk shirts, using exquisite, european fabrics, for corporate, every day, evening and special occasions. We make limited quantitys, therefore giving you an individual look - only available throughout our seven stores. THE LEGENDARY OKANUI CLASSIC HIBISCUS BOARDSHORTS HAVE BECOME ONE OF THE ICONS OF HASTINGS STREET.

Photographer: Georges Antoni (The Artist Group)

Ellie Sinclair-Guy, the manager of the Okanui shop says she has seen families come back year after year. Some of the families have now settled in Noosa, and even the grandchildren of the original holiday makers are coming into the shop wanting their Okanuis. A man came to the front door recently, stood to attention and announced that the Okanuis he was wearing were twenty years old, and said he needed a new pair. It's the uniqueness of Hastings Street that the visitors enjoy. Ellie

says that many of her customers say it's the ambience and friendly service they really appreciate. Customers often come back to the shop with gifts or send post cards thanking the Okanui girls for helping make their holiday a memorable one.' make their holiday in Noosa a memorable one. Noosa is one of those magical places that seem to draw people back time and time again. They may try some romantic sounding exotic faraway holiday destination, but somehow Noosa has that amazing charm that people cannot resist, Is it the natural beauty of Laguna Bay, or the shopping, or the restaurants? What ever it is, Noosa is certainly a place that is able to span the generation gap.

Springs into a decade FROM SWAMPS AND SCRUB TO NOOSA SPRINGS WHICH IS HERALDED AS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S PREMIER 18HOLE CHAMPION GOLF COURSES. ver ten years ago Alan Starkey’s vision splendid saw former market gardens, animal grazing land and horse racing tracks morph into the magnificent Noosa Springs. An amazing feat. Alan set up his architectural practice in Noosa and became interested in a parcel of land which was part of holdings owned by John Hoffman. Although driving over it was impossible at the time, he knew it had enormous potential and purchased 250 acres or 103 hectares. “We called it Noosa Springs because of the natural springs on the site,” explains Alan, a father of four including Philip, the general manager who plays an integral role in the family-owned StarCo Developments company. “The site had it all - land form, naturalness and an amphitheatre shape. It was isolated from everything else, yet close to Hastings Street, didn’t have an actual water-frontage however it ran along one kilometre of Lake Weyba. I knew there would be many developers wanting to do a stereo-typed land subdivision, however I didn’t agree. This land had all the best credentials you could hope for to create something very special.” Alan had a vision beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. The master plan involved a high quality 18-hole championship golf course something which Noosa didn’t have, an associated luxury resort, a mix of sporting and recreation facilities plus a vibrant residential estate all complementing the unique environment. There was a distinctive, five-star quality that oozed casual elegance. Alan had never developed a golf course before, so attacked study with fervour. “Construction commenced in 1997 and we dug out the swampy areas to create the undulation of the golf course, and moved 600 cubic metres of soil (that’s a lot), to form it,” says charismatic perfectionist Alan, who engaged Graham Papworth to design the greens and the tees. “We didn’t spare any money, drained it properly and lifted the low lying areas - in some

O

instances 1.8 metres. We wanted to produce a course for all levels of golfers from challenges for those with a low handicap and tolerance for those with a high handicap. It took 18 months to complete, everything worked out very well and now it’s in the top 20 golf courses in the country.” Alan also wanted to build a gated residential community of 272 homes with 24/7 security. The first stage comprised 144 villas. “My vision was to create a little village where there were social values. We planted lots of trees, the golf course offered a great aspect and on the recreational side there were walkways, tennis courts, fitness centre and the club house/meeting place, which is so

its entire history,” says Alan Starkey adding Noosa Springs is isolated from other regional urban development and unlike many courses where the site is denuded of vegetation at the beginning of their construction, as many as possible of the original trees were retained. In addition ten hectares of freshwater lakes were stocked with 40,000 native fish. “I recall the first round was played on a rainy

important for a neighbourhood.” Whilst there’s a theme running throughout Noosa Springs and well regulated covenants in place, Alan admits he didn’t want the freestanding prestigious homes to look alike. “Each one has an individual look, plans vary and buildings have their own elements of style.” Apart from the club house the golf course estate has a world class spa with unique water therapy treatment facilities, an award-winning restaurant, state-of-the-art fitness centre with heated 25 metre pool, tennis courts with views over the Noosa hinterland and a beautifully appointed conference centre – all just three minutes drive from famous Hastings Street and Noosa beaches. “It’s not often you’ll find a golf course estate that has been in the care of the same owners for

Mother’s Day between my son Philip, the construction manager Ian Grimsey, the former Noosa Springs golf course director Chris Rutherford and myself,” says Alan. According to Philip it’s also the quality of the landscaping that sets Noosa Springs apart and it‘s acknowledged with several industry awards for excellence: “It didn’t happen by chance. Dad was involved in the landscape concept design, the detailed design and even directed tradesmen where to place a particular rock in a water feature. He is well known as a perfectionist. The architectural draughtsmen who work for him often expressed frustration about the number of revisions to drawings. Close enough was not good enough.”

harlie Moore thrives on challenges. To him nothing is impossible - it’s just another day in the building industry. Some years ago Tania Hindmarsh put Charlie to the test when she designed a house for herself at Elanora on Sydney’s northern beaches. “Charlie, who had previously built and renovated many upmarket homes from ritzy suburbs such as Palm Beach, Clontarf and Mosman, did a fabulous job,” says Tania. “He had great insight and never said it couldn’t be done. We hit it off straight away and now work as a fantastic team.” The partners in business as well as life, made the sea-change to Noosa eight years ago and built Namale (meaning ‘to live with passion’), a magnificent Balinese-inspired home and gardens in Doonan. Their next project was moving and melding two original Queenslanders on a large site also in Doonan. The task was monumental; the result was sensational. The dream to own the

ultimate beach house became a reality with Istania on South Stradbroke Island, however building it, Tania and Charlie faced a different set of challenges yet managed to raise the bar of excellence. Next challenge: Sunshine Beach, known as a great area for long term investment, a fact backed up in the latest Property magazine, which ranked it in the top five of the nation’s best performing suburbs. “With beautiful beaches, a stylish air and great village vibe, we couldn’t think of a better area. When the opportunity presented itself we decided to go with it, that’s despite all the challenges,” effuses Tania, sighting the land size and council restrictions as the biggest issues. “It does however make you think harder in how to overcome what’s before you. And what an amazing journey it’s been.” For this project, the design savvy trio is Charlie Moore, Tania Hindmarsh and Scott Rippon of Arango Designs Pty Ltd. The result is luxury and glamour personified. “Each apartment has been masterfully designed to encapsulate an individual mood,” explains Tania Hindmarsh about the two residences at Weyba One Four and the two residences at 20 on Weyba. “Vibrant colours, gleaming finishes, plus furniture and fittings sourced from around the globe, shriek of splendour - an impression complemented by premium-quality natural materials such as stone-stacked feature walls and red cedar flooring. Koi ponds, splash pools and spas - natural additions to the tropical gardens, bring the outdoors in.” Scott, inspired by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, has translated time-worn design principles by presenting outstanding lineage and instant architectural appeal. Charles’ attention to detail and the fusion of various material required during the building process has been described as “knockout”. Tania has an innate understanding of maximising space to achieve a seamless flow. Her choice of features and accessories add allure to the design brief. Tania says she draws inspiration from life:“There are so many beautiful places even nature itself to admire, touch and smell – lots of memories that fuse. Whenever we go to another country we look at the architecture, how it's put together and the materials used. I take everything in and let the ideas evolve from there. “My dad was also a huge inspiration. He was a designer/ builder who was constantly coming up with great new ideas. I've been around

building sites all my whole life so it’s quite natural to me. And with Charlie’s father being an engineer and his grandfather an architect, it's in our blood. We live and breath design.” Tania and Charlie’s favourite holiday destination is Bali where they feel so relaxed and enjoy being indulged in what is their idea of heaven, however it’s the finer aspects of Asia that can be seen in the detail of the exteriors and interiors. “I prefer to call the flavour modern Asian,” describes Tania. “The continent brims over with amazing architecture and fabulous natural materials. Such clever creative people, beautiful scenery and lush outdoor living. “We wanted to bring that feeling into these boutique apartments - a combination of great design, mood, passion and soul to Sunshine Beach with its similar climate. Colours are also an integral part and should transcend a warm emotion as soon as you step inside. “I’ve designed or handpicked the furniture for each of the four apartments to ensure an individual wow-factor look. Wherever possible I’ve had it manufactured overseas. The lounges for example were imported from Germany. “Stone and timber are very important elements giving warmth, interest and grounding. Lighting gives the all-important mood and I’ve deliberately dodged usual-style fixtures using instead individually sourced art features. Once again it

gives each apartment a personality whilst being reminiscent of a luxury retreat.” Tania and Charlie, who have sons Daniel 17 and Brycen 6, confess they build as though it’s the only place they’ll ever have.“So much love and passion goes with every project and we become so focused it totally consumes us. It has to be right.” The fully furnished apartments paint a seductive picture and are a feast for the senses, being perfect examples of uncompromised detail and quality meeting incredible design. The Constant Gardenia EXQUISITE FRAGRANT AND BEAUTIFUL CREAMY GARDENIAS CREATE A MAGICAL, ROMANTIC ATMOSPHERE IN ANY GARDEN, COURTYARD OR ROOM. ardenias, members of the Rubiaceae family are native to eastern Asia China, Taiwan and Japan. Their gorgeous displays of white flowers stretch generously through the warmer months and even in the middle of winter make attractive structural plants. Growing happily in pots as well as garden beds and best positioned where you can enjoy the perfume such as doorways, windows and al fresco areas, they prefer warm, frost-free locations WITH THEIR that are protected from the hot afternoon sun. An ideal LARGER, CREAMY position offers morning sun and dappled shade in the WHITE afternoon. FLOWERS “Gardenias are one of my favourite shrubs,” extols AND RICH, Outside Noosa’s gardening guru John Scomparin, who GLOSSY uses them extensively in his landscape designs. “The GREEN outstanding flowering shrub has a perfume that’s FOLIAGE THEY immediately recognisable. They flower at their best MAKE A VERY usually from late spring to late autumn with the main ATTRACTIVE flush in the months leading up to Christmas. With their GARDEN larger, creamy white flowers and rich, glossy green foliage PLANT. they make a very attractive garden plant. “They are excellent for mass planting and are also ideal for hedging and will perform well for many years in a large pot, provided quality potting mix is used. Grown as standards they also look great in a pot. “They like slightly acidic, cool, moist and well-drained soil. Little pruning is required unless grown as a hedge. It is therefore a very low maintenance plant that performs well in any south-east Queensland garden. “My favourites Professor Pucci and Magnifica can grow up to two metres in height and boast larger flowers and foliage. Gardenia Florida grows to one metre in height and is a prolific flowerer from November to May. It has very rich, dark green foliage. Golden Magic has flowers that turn yellow with age. Radicans is a dwarf form, with a prostrate habit and up to half a metre high by 1.5 metre spread, making it an excellent ground cover. It has smaller flowers and foliage.” Water gardenias well especially when flowering; protect root system with mulch, compost or well-rotted wood chip; and feed in spring and summer with Osmocote, Multicote or Dynamic Lifter. Gardenias make pretty bouquets and floral displays but handle blooms with care as they bruise easily.

Easy riders... owners salivate over it. It is one of only 500 in the world with only 29 reaching Australian shores and Troy, who has been the world champion in superbikes in 2001 - 2006 – 2008, the current world champion), owns three of the 29. He has recently retired to the Gold Coast Monte Carlo. His sister Jenna and husband Nick have Viande meat at Belmondos in Noosaville. “Graeme has a collector’s bike, hence the paintwork in the Australian flag to show that we dominated the world,” says wife Julie who rides a town-style Monster 696. “His is a replica of Troy’s race bike when he won the championship on last year. We have seen him race twice off shore in Imola and Missano in Italy and also Casey Stoner who rides with fellow Aussie and Yandina-ite Chris Vermeulen, a contender for the world championship in GP racing.” Lew Brennen rides a ST4S sport’s tourer, Tania Jones’ has a Monster 695 and hubby Russell’s is a Yamaha R1. “Ducatis are Italian, say no more,” extols Lew, whose wife Maurene is Graeme’s cousin. “I met Russell and Tanya through Julie and Graeme, who I’ve known for 35 years.“Like anything, you just find good people who you are comfortable with and who have a sense of humour, so frankly I don't know why we let Russell come along! Actually he's a cracker and always makes the trips a laugh. “Ducatis are the Ferrari of the bike world and have a great race bred history. They tend to make race bikes first and then convert them to the road rather than the other way round. They’re still semi handmade in small numbers making them more collectable, are incredibly innovative and forward looking. Their design elements are second to none and shortly after releasing a new model it is often copied by other manufacturers. They are simply the hottest looking thing on the road.”

art Greg Postle – His Northern Exposure Internationally renowned bird painter, Greg Postle, is showing new works at Lasting Impressions Gallery in Kenilworth from 5 – 20 July 2009. This is welcome news for investors and collectors of wild life art, many of whom have waited for years to obtain one of Greg’s masterpieces. Inspired by his love for the wilds of the Kimberley, his exhibition ‘Northern Exposure’ features mainly the prominent waders and shore birds of the region, meticulously painted within their natural environment. Gone are any extraneous elements that may detract the viewer’s focus from the delicacy of an egret’s lace plumes or the graceful curve of its neck. Greg’s increasing maturity shines throughout this exhibition and his deep-felt sense for the beauty of the Northwest is captured in the backdrop to many of his paintings. Be it the gravitas of a stalking Jabiru, the aerial dance of the Welcome Swallows or the powerful elegance of the Sea Eagle, Greg Postle’s work transports us into the realm where the dream of flight meets with the actuality of nature. ‘Collectors would be well advised to make an early decision to secure one of the all-too-few works available,’ says Kaye Cathro, Gallery Director. The exhibition opens on Sunday, 5th of July. A preview of the paintings is available on www.lastingimpressionsgallery.net

“The festival is tackling new territory as it focuses ‘art’ on one of the world’s most

significant concerns – climate change,” says gallery director Christine Ballinger.“Artists, writers, scientists, diverse communities are coming together to visualise, write and talk about, eat, play and perhaps bring new understanding to this environmental challenge. As director, I have been overwhelmed by the groundswell of support for this festival.” The theme of climate change and the impact of rising sea levels on coastal and island communities of the Pacific Ocean (identified by the UNESCO Madrid Action Plan as a critical issue for our planet) will be explored by visual and performance

artists, photographers, writers and musicians, scientists and researchers. The event will involve renowned artists from New Zealand, Vanuatu and New Caledonia plus Australian artists and Pacific Ocean communities living in Australia. The majority of the artwork will be created over a number of days and be sitespecific. At the end of the event all the artworks will be on ‘exhibition’ at their sites, finally decaying, washing away or being removed. Visitors to Floating Land will be encouraged to stop and watch the sculptors over the 10-day event from 19 to 28 June 2009, participate in the workshops, attend the forums, follow the daily photography exhibits, and watch the spectacle that has become known as ‘Firings on the Lake’ at sunset on stunning Lake Cootharaba. over a two kilometre stretch of the lake’s shoreline. The lake’s physical attributes provide the diversity of sites suitable for site-specific work whilst still being close to Noosa. The Noosa Regional Gallery will hold two Pacific Island exhibitions in conjunction with Floating Land. ‘The canary in the coal mine’ for climate change is a term employed to describe Tuvalu, an island group in the Pacific Ocean. The first, Waters of Tuvalu: a Nation at Risk, presents works from the Museum of Victoria and artefacts from the community of Tuvalu. The second exhibition, Legacy Tuvalu: the Footprint on Funafuti, by photo-journalist Jocelyn Carlin, shows the impact first-hand that climate change is having on the Pacific Islands. Members of the Tuvaluan community in Brisbane will present traditional performance works during the festival.

During July unbelievably realistic landscape paintings by Michael Challen, one of Australia’s best landscape artists will be on show as part of his 2009 “Nature and Light” exhibition. This latest series of beautiful oil paintings by Challen, whose work is admired nationwide, follows on from his successful inaugural exhibition at the Buderim gallery last year – his first solo exhibition in the Eastern States of Australia. Challen already enjoys a history of sell-out exhibitions in his former home state, Western Australia with his works in prestigious private and corporate collections. Working now from the Sunshine Coast, Michael only produces a select number of paintings each year because of their exacting intricacy. Tiffany Jones, director of Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery said: “Anticipation for Michael’s “Nature and Light” exhibition is high due to the admiration of his detailed technique amongst art collectors and artists alike”. “The outstanding realism in Michael’s paintings stems from his desire to capture the essence of a location which gives the scenes he paints great emotional magnitude and perhaps explains why his paintings have been called “soul-scapes”, Tiffany said. Challen’s exhibition includes iconic scenes of the Kimberley and Pilbara regions in WA plus beautiful

supporting indigenous art Providing a supportive role to artist in this economic climate is a challenge, but nevertheless not impossible. Supporting community based projects that help to sustain life in their remote desert environments can be as easy as thinking of hand made cushions, lacquer boxes or some music sticks next time that birthday or special gift is needed. Whether you buy from your local Minnie Pwerle galleries that support these projects and give you the opportunity to select from a range of items, to view and experience your purchase, or whether you order online - the chose is yours. Putipula Gallery in association with Kaltjiti Arts Is proud to present Tjulpun-tjulpun Ngura. An exhibition of wildflowers and country Kaltjiti artists sing country, dance country and paint the song of their lands. The epic song cycles of the Western Desert people have resounded for thousands of years across these sand dunes of Central Australia. The creation ancestors first sang these songs at the dawn of time. Each artist paints only the song, stories and sites for which they have inherited rights. The artists of Kaltjiti live at Fregon, a small settlement in the far northwest of South Australia, 500km southwest of Alice Springs and many of these artists have been with the Kaltjiti Art centre since it was first established in 1961. As is always the case at Putipula Gallery, the paintings and provenance come directly from the art centre. This exhibition has the added bonus of artists in attendance along with the art centre manager, Beverley Peacock. If you think Aboriginal artwork is about brown dots, think again! This exhibition will feature artworks, which will be available for sale, showcasing the wildflowers of our desert and country. Please join us to experience the vibrancy of these stunning paintings. We welcome you to Putipula Gallery.

Top Tips to Fly Safely and Combat Jetlag... with Dr Deborah Mills

sleepy. Research has now shown that 5mg of melatonin, taken at the target bedtime e.g.10pm for 2-5 days after arrival, decreases jetlag especially after travelling eastward.

Q. What is DVT and how can I prevent it? Flying is certainly the most efficient way of getting from A to B quickly, but it does have a number of risks associated, and some are more obvious than others. We know that we should take notice where the exits are and fastening our seatbelts, but there are other tips we can apply to make airplane travel safer and more comfortable. In particular, following some basics to prevent the dreaded DVT (Deep Vein Thrombisis), as even very healthy people can develop these potentially fatal blood clots - and it can happen just as easily in Business and First Class travel.

Q. Why does jetlag occur? A. Jetlag is not feeling tired from a miserable plane flight. Jetlag is when your internal body clock is out of synch with the local time zone. Hormones normally synchronize your body clock with the daylight. This internal clock guides you when to feel hungry, tired and even how often to use the bathroom. It may take 24 hours to adjust to every three hours of ‘time jump’ which is why it can take up to 5 days to feel normal after flying from the UK to Australia.

Q. How to combat jetlag?

A. You need not get off the plane feeling like a zombie – especially if you are travelling west, which is invariably easier on the body. If you are travelling East, consider the possibility of a stop-over in your journey, and try not have any big farewell parties in the days before departure, as two good nights sleep before you go is ideal. Don’t organise to do too much on the first day after you arrive – especially avoid picking up a hire car and driving too far on the first day. The best cure for jet lag is rest. It may take up to 7 days to recover from a 10 – 12 hour time shift, especially if travelling east. When you arrive at the new time zone you will adapt faster if you try to do what the locals are doing. Your body uses certain clues to set its internal clock, such as sunshine often a walk in the sunshine on the morning after arrival stimulates the optic nerve and helps the pineal gland in your head reset the body clock; eating something at the new mealtimes helps get the body back on track; sleeping at the current time-zone sleep times. Malaria Melatonin - ‘hormone of darkness’ – is a hormone from the pineal gland in the brain which controls the body’s eternal clock. Melatonin levels increase when it is dark outside and cause you to feel

A. Prolonged sitting leads to a blood clot (thrombosis) forming in the deep veins of the calf, upper leg or even pelvis – hence the term DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). The symptoms of DVT range from nothing at all, to a mild soreness or swelling in one leg. Serious problems occur when a clot breaks off and is swept via the circulation to the lungs; this is called a pulmonary embolism. If this clot is large, it can block the blood supply to the heart and be fatal. However, DVT is a very rare cause of death in travellers - but even small clots can damage your lungs permanently and mean you have to take long term anti-clotting drugs, which can be very intrusive on your lifestyle and exercise tolerance. So what can you do? How Not To Clot – think of it as W.A.L.C. Water – Drink plenty of fluids Activity – Exercise your legs and walk around the plane when possible. Exercise also helps prevent swollen feet and is especially important if you are pregnant. Luggage – It must not press on the back of your legs. Remove bulky objects from your back pocket. Put a pillow in the small of your back. Crossing your legs interferes with the circulation and puts uneven strain on different parts of the body, so minimise this if you can. Compression Stockings - should be worn if prescribed, especially if you are over 50 years of age, or you have any increased risk of clotting.

Q. Does flying increase risk of catching the flu? A. Medical research has dispelled another myth. As long as the plane has the air-conditioning running, your risk of catching respiratory germs is no higher than at your local shopping centre. Most planes have 15-20 air exchanges per hour. The airport is a greater risk – one percent of travellers catch influenza, so a flu vaccine may be recommended for your trip. As a pioneer within the field, Dr Deborah Mills of Dr Deb’s Travel Health Care, has practiced in travel medicine for 20 years. She is also the author of Australia’s most popular medical travel book ‘Travelling Well’ which is in its fourteenth edition and has 125,000 copies in print.
