CONTENTS
Welcome to our sensational Autumn issue of NOOSA Style Magazine...
welcome
We want to be extremely upbeat this issue. With all the "doom and gloom" we keep hearing from the media, banking fraternity and Government; you'd be hard pressed to find anything to smile about. But luckily - we at NOOSA Style are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the bright and beautiful, fun and fantastic - bold and bright elements of life. There is always an upside to any downside - you only have to be positive. It's not as though we haven't been through this before. Surely you all remember Mr Keating and his "recession we had to have." Well, we all made it through that! I recently attended two local art gallery showings, Swim Week to preview 2009 Summer swimwear, and a new season Autumn/Winter fashion showing. All in attendance were bright, eager and supportive of their hosts and the future. I saw enough purchases made that you could almost be forgiven for asking "what recession?" And, in keeping with our philosophy to be bright and optimistic, we bring you a startling collection of fashion, fun, arts, travel, motoring, prestige properties, books, movies and theatre, as well as food and wine. We also share a conversation with several interesting people - just to complete your reading enjoyment. Easter is nearly here, so we have also included a couple of chocolate goodies and fun recipes for you to enjoy over your break, and we've also found a few new wines to add to your next dinner menu. Be sure to start making your return bookings for May - so that you can be part of Noosa's Food and Wine Festival. There will be cooking demonstrations with some of Australia's leading chefs, local produce will be used and displayed for tasting, and industry notables will be holding workshop and talkfests for the culinary minded. With three food safaris to join, two degustation dinners, special restaurants hosting guest chef dinners, as well as three days of exciting entertainment in the park - Noosa will be the place to be in 2009. No matter which month you choose. Please sit back, read and enjoy...

Tea, sympathy and true grit A love of story telling and a career in journalism has catapulted Ange Takats from behind the scenes into the limelight. WRITER: HELEN FLANAGAN PHOTO: ALAIN BOUVIER 12
NoosaStyleLiving
NoosaStyleliving CHECK TIP TOES, WITH ITS SLOWMO GUITARS AND GORGEOUS PIANO LINES GIVING FOUNDATION TO A SONG FULL OF YEARNING
s a kid, Ange Takats sang like an angel but a singing career was never considered an option. At 15 she decided media was her calling. After studying journalism at Bathurst University, south of Sydney for three years, she scored a job at Sky News Australia, then joined the Nine Network as producer/reporter in the newsroom. “At the end of 2000, I decided to take on a whole new career challenge by moving to Bangkok,” she recalled. “I harassed every English speaking media company in south east Asia until Reuters offered me a position as a foreign correspondent in their Bangkok Bureau. The two years working for Reuters in Asia were the best time of my life. I covered the most amazing stories including interviewing Aung San Suu Kyi, when she was briefly released from house arrest, plus there were lots of crazy animal stories such as elephant weddings, buffalo funerals and lizard ceremonies.” Songwriting and performing also became a passion. She found herself a gig in a Bangkok bar playing guitar and singing folk songs from the late 60s and early 70s and met a bunch of talented Thai musicians who she later joined on stage in a folk rock band. “One of the most memorable on-stage moments was one Friday night playing at Admakers, one of my favourite music pubs in Bangkok with two Thai musicians,” says Ange during a epiphanic moment. “We were half way through Bobby McGee, one of my favourite old hippie songs, when an elephant walked past the window of the bar. I thought to myself:‘This is MY life, I am 23 years old, singing in a folk rock band in Bangkok and working as a foreign correspondent’. A huge wave of happiness came over me.” The rest as they say is history. Ange returned to Australia and set up house in Peregian Beach. She has an affinity with the locale and it provides her with a constant source of inspiration: “I love the green tree frogs that sit on my balcony, the community atmosphere, lack of high rise buildings, my local post office man Wayne and the Peregian Originals [groups of musicians who perform in the square], plus the fact that a world class music venue like Joe's Waterhole, is just a short drive away. I also love morning walks along the beach where I do most of my songwriting.” Ange has certainly found the muse to pen her own words. Her debut album Aniseed Tea, which received support from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Arts Queensland in the form of a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant, is testament to her

extraordinary talent. Penned during a 12 month period, it blends the sounds of American folk music from the early seventies with the ramblings of a gypsy girl from Oz, adding spoonfuls of Brisbane's finest musicians. Adrian Mauro recorded, arranged and produced the album, with some of the country's top musicians adding their talents to the brew. The tracks were then sent to the UK where they were mixed by Australian engineer Ben Tolliday at Frou Frou Central in London. Ben’s most recent projects include Alanis Morissette and Jackie Marshall "Each song has a different tale to tell,” says Ange who was winner of the 2008 Lis Johnston Award for vocal excellence at the National Folk Festival, where her voice was described as ‘Gillian Welch meets Joan Baez’. “From the Irish nudist I met at a pub in Noosa to a tune about knitting for a Romanian/Canadian medical student, who broke up with me but kept the beanie”. The album features Adrian Mauro from The Black Alles Band, Ben Tolliday from Trinkets, Greg Cathcart and Richard Johnston from The Black Alles Band/Speedstar band, Robbie Long from The Lawnmowers/Kate Fagan/ Liz Frencham, Andrew Maddick from the English Symphony Orchestra and Beck Flatt from Loren. The album’s cover was designed by Katie from the Ransom Gallery in Eumundi gallery and the painting is by one of gallery’s artists Danielle O'Brien. Well known music critics such as the Courier Mail’s Noel Mengel were full of accolades for the album: "Ange Takats has some interesting stories to tell but the hook is that soulful voice she tells them with. There’s real grit and passion there. Check Tip Toes, with its slow-mo guitars and gorgeous piano lines giving foundation to a song full of yearning ... Takats sings the you-know-what out of it: not too hot, not to cold, just right.” Polly, from Tsunami Magazine, who gave the album 8/10 comments: "Her storytelling is laced with honesty and grace and it is the ease in which she breathes life into her intimate memories that makes for a well-balanced and gratifying listen. Songwriting ability aside, it’s Ange’s voice that is truly the star of the show. Reminiscent of American folk singer and longstanding friend of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Takats’ exceptional voice is fine, smooth and almost effortless as it slips from her lips.” Ange performed at the 2008/09 Woodford Folk Festival, the largest of its kind in Australia: “I had an absolute blast and met some amazing musicians during the six day festival. The feedback from the audience was really lovely. “The album’s launch at Joe’s Waterhole in Eumundi was fabulous with nearly 200 attending plus two support acts from Melbourne. On a 12-day tour of Tasmania, I performed at the Cygnet Folk Festival, which has a great reputation in music circles and looking ahead I’m off to Canberra to perform at the National Folk Festival, one of the largest in Australia. I’m back to Queensland in May for the Wintermoon Folk Festival, a splendid little fest near Mackay. “It's wonderful to be able to take my songs, which were all created here on the coast, and share them with music lovers across the country.”

rsvp Dog day afternoon The RSPCA Charity Golf Day held at Noosa Springs was witnessed by a host of wagging tails and wet noses as 112 players set out to a shotgun start, raising $20,000 for the cause. The charity event was emceed by television and radio personality Ed Phillips and was organised to raise funds for the purchase of a Road Home vehicle, a large automatic van to be used for transporting animals for educational seminars in order to raise awareness. The van will also be fitted with cages to accommodate the rescue of animals from inhumane situations. This initiative supports the RSPCA tagline: Helping AnimalsEnlightening People- Changing Lives. The vehicle will help to manage the increase of incidents of animal neglect in the Noosa area, as well as helping to prevent problems from occurring through a community engagement approach. “The Road Home van is a bit like the Batmobile, responding to cries for help such as cruelty complaints, abandonment, wildlife emergencies and animal endangerment as well as for moving animals around to help with re-homing and adoptions,” says Animal Care Centre Manager Noosa and Cooloolah, Nicole Cleary, “and It’s an important asset in enabling us to promote responsible animal welfare.”

Noosaville was a sleepy hollow in the 1920s except for the first café in the area, called The Favourite, which was owned by the Massouds. It became a magnet for troops during World War 11 when troops drove their amphibious army ducks out of the river to collect their fresh fish and chips, cooked on a tiny wooden stove. The late Maisie Massoud said that even during war rationing the family got by somehow. If people had money they paid for their food, otherwise it was free. When it comes to choice, consumers have the best of the bunch from an abundance of premium, juicy grape varieties including white Thompson and Crimson seedless. Nutritious white and red grapes in all their tasty varieties are not only good on the lips but good on the hips too, with a new low GI certification from Glycemic Index Limited confirming what we’ve known all along – these bursts of fruity fun are satisfyingly healthy. All five of Australia’s most popular grape varieties – white Thompson and Menindee and Red Crimson, Red Globe and Flame grapes – have undergone Glycaemic Testing, showing that
the delicious taste doesn’t come at the sugary cost it appears to. With an overall GI value of low, now is the perfect time to snack on grapes throughout the day or use in a recipe. Each grape is packed with a collection of vitamins and minerals including potassium, calcium, manganese and iron, which are essential for good health and energy. Indulge in red grapes for the same beneficial antioxidants as red wine, without the alcohol. Made up of 80 per cent water, grazing on grapes will ensure you stay hydrated all day long. When shopping, choose a bunch which has grapes firmly attached to the stem, rather than those that may be browning at the stem and remember they should firm and plump, not soft or wrinkled. Stored correctly in an airtight plastic container in the fridge, grapes will stay fresh for up to five days. Cheese connoisseurs know the perfect cheese platter isn’t complete without grapes. Not only do they draw out the flavours and taste of the cheese, a grape or two between different cheeses will act as a palate cleanser to reinvigorate the taste buds. A sharp and pungent blue cheese such as a Cropwell Bishop Stilton is best matched with a red grape, while a white grape will complement a soft cheese such as a Jindi Triple Cream Brie. The balance for a Quicks Classic Cloth Bound Cheddar or hard cheese can be found with a sweeter grape, such as Thompson seedless.

Grape slushies Ingredients: 4 cups red grapes 1 cup no added sugar grape or cranberry juice
Method: Place the red grapes in a food processor or blender along with the grape or cranberry juice and blend until slushy. Remove and pour half the mixture in a large metal tray. Press the other half of the mixture through a sieve and discard the skins. Add strained juice to the tray and stir to combine. Cover and place in the freezer. Rinse the processor
or blender then repeat the process of blending and sieving the green grapes and apple juice. Pour into a metal tray, cover and place in the freezer. After the trays have been in the freezer for about 2 hours and the mixtures are nearly fully frozen, run a fork through each tray to separate the ice crystals, making the mixture light and ‘fluffy’. Serve the red and green slushies in separate glasses or cups immediately or return to freezer and serve when ready. Serves 4-6 Tip : Sprinkle the green grape slushie with mint to serve.

SMOKED SNAPPER CROQUETTES 1 500g * Noosa River Smokehouse smoked snapper fillet 500ml full fat milk 80g plain flour 80g butter 10 black pepper corns 2 bay leaves 1 onion, peeled, roughly chopped 1 egg 200g water
4 tbs plain flour 100g of Japanese breadcrumbs bunch watercress ( optional ) 2 tbs whole grain mustard 2 tsp fresh horseradish 3 lemons, cut into cheeks for squeezing 200ml mayonnaise Pre heat the oven to 160 degrees. In a deep tray, put the snapper fillet, peppercorns, bay, chopped onion and pour over the milk, cover with tin foil and place in the oven. Cook for 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly, then place the smoked snapper on a plate and strain the poaching liquor discarding the onion etc. In a thick bottomed pan melt the butter slowly then add the flour. Keep stirring over the heat until a smooth paste is achieved.
Slowly add the warm milk, a little at a time constantly until you have a smooth, thick sauce. Continue to cook for 15 minutes stirring regularly. Remove the skin and bones from the snapper, flake the fish into the sauce and stir in gently taking care not to break up the fish too much. Add the mustard and chopped watercress (if required). Check the seasoning, pour the contents into a tray or bowl and leave to cool over night if possible . Roll all the mixture into cylindrical shapes of 2 inch by 2/3 inch Whisk together the egg and water and place in a bowl, put the flour and

In for the chop Denis Poynton has always loved food and would do anything to help his mum prepare meals for dad and four siblings. At age13 he developed the Prep-Deck Pro chopping board making several dozen as gifts however it wasn’t until forty years later that the design became a commercial reality. His idea was to bring together a recessed area to collect the liquid/juices and a cut-out area to allow for easier distribution of food from the board to a cooking/serving utensil. Denis has worked on the Sunshine Coast in the hospitality industry including designing and installing commercial kitchens and in restaurants at different levels. His spit roast-style catering is still in demand today. When his mother died 12 years ago he inherited a tea chest of kitchen appliances including his cherished cutting board and Denis and partner Kathryn Porter began extensive market research to ensure the product would appeal to cooks and chefs. When it was finally launched last August the response was overwhelming. Prepdeck Pro has a non-slip base; ergonomic handles for improved safety, comfort and stability; a recessed channel and well which collects juices and allows for easy pouring; and a cut-away chute to sweep chopped ingredients into utensils. It is available in various retail outlets plus farmer’s markets and comes in seven colours for different types of food thus avoiding cross-contamination.

Our ultimate aim is to produce wines showing all the attributes of the Adelaide Hills with complexity and great personality. We are extremely selective in the vineyard and combine new and old world winemaking techniques to ensure maximum fruit and vineyard expression, so it’s great to see these efforts being recognised." MONTANA MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC voted shining star by Winestate magazine... As Montana prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Montana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the 2008 vintage wine has received five stars in Winestate’s Annual Australia and New Zealand Wine Buying Guide – 2009 edition. The Winestate Annual 2009 highlights the most outstanding wines tasted in 2008 and acknowledges the best of the best, with over 10,000 wines independently tasted. “Montana planted the first Sauvignon Blanc grapes in Marlborough, leading to the discovery of a flavour the world had not tasted before. 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the first vintage of Montana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and this accolade from Winestate is another reason for our viticulture and winemaking teams to celebrate,” said Jeff Clarke, Chief Winemaker. Of the 2008 vintage, Jeff Clarke commented “Montana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a quality wine that is available throughout the world and within everyone’s reach. The flavours are typically bold, ripe and zesty - exactly what you’d expect from a classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – New Zealand’s quintessential wine style, a true kiwi icon.”

PATRÓN TEQUILA... IT TAKES TIME AND HEART TO MAKE A TEQUILA THIS SMOOTH AND COMPLEX. It all starts with Agave - a sweet plant desert succulent from the lily family (not a cactus as many think). There are hundreds of varieties of Agave, but true tequila is only made from the Weber Blue Agave. They take 6-8 years to mature and are then harvested by skilled workers (jimadors) with an ancient tool (coa). The spiky leaves are removed to reveal the heart (pina) of the Agave, some weighing up to 200 pounds. The hearts are chopped by hand at the Hacienda and slow roasted in small batches, to emerge sweet, rich and delicious. This is the aromatic sweetness you will enjoy in Patrón Tequila. This is the premium Tequila consumed by movie stars, the rich and famous. And, now the complete range of ultra premium Tequila Patrón - Reposado, Anejo and Silver are available at Liquor@your local, Sunshine Beach & Peregian Square and the Peregian Beach Hotel.
synthetic sprays or chemical fertilisers have been used, instead natural preparations are made with plant based products and mineral extracts,,which respect the environment and increase the soils vitality. This method allows the winemaker to extract the 'sensuality of the land' which then expresses itself in an aromatic and complex palate. The champagne presents with a light amber colour, medium sized pearls and a bold flavour full of honey and floral tones. A rare delight - that will now be available from Organika in Noosaville, which has built up a huge following of loyal customers looking for true organic choices. Try it with their organic salmon.

the best The Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club has morphed from a shed built eighty years ago, to a palatial edifice befitting its stature i n t h e c o m m u n i t y.
Writer: Helen Flanagan ever losing a life between the flags is a remarkable feat for the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving, the genesis of which was in 1915 when the first lifesaving reel was installed on Main Beach. Started by country visitors keen to look after family and friends during the holidays, the Cooroy Royal Life Saving and Surf Club as it was initially known, had its first patrols on Easter Saturday in 1928. It was renamed the Noosa Heads Royal Life Saving and Surf Club. At the time, the roads were barely passable and the club first patrolled in the area now known as Sunshine Beach, before the north-facing azure waters of Laguna Bay beckoned.

“In the early years money and equipment were at a minimum and transportation to the beach was by whatever means available,” former president and now the club’s patron Ron Lane reflected in Robert Longhurst’s book Bush to Beach: A History of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. “But through it all they persisted and the club survived, except for a short period during World War II when most able-bodied men answered their country’s call to arms. “As the years went by, memberships fluctuated through highs and lows and consisted mainly of boys from Gympie, Murgon, the hinterland and even Brisbane. Two such characters were Hugh Murray and Ken Mew who around 1940 worked at McWhirters in the Valley, rode their bikes to Noosa, slept on the side of the road and walked their bikes up the steep ranges near Eumundi. The 17 year-olds would send their tent ahead via post on the train to Cooroy where it would be picked up by a truck and taken to Noosa. They set up camp on the beach at the Point. Hugh, an 84 year-old retired army officer still lives in Brisbane and loves his sojourns to Noosa. He often recalls those good old days, especially the time he and Ken hired a wooden dinghy from Massoud’s boat hire for about ten shillings and had to rescue two 18 year-old girl tourists from the sandbar near the river mouth. It cannot be accused of lacking elegance. But who can resist its exquisite and languorous beauty?

here do you live? We moved to Tarzali, a village close to Malanda in 2003, renovated a property on 2 1/2 acres, by extending it with a large outdoor living area to take advantage of the fabulous views. At 750 metres above sea level the views take in Queensland's two highest mountains, Mt Bartle Frere and Mt Bellenden Ker in one direction and from our deck where we sit with a glass of wine watching the sunset, there’s the distant Herberton Ranges. We love the diversity of wildlife on our land, the many species of birds including a young cassowary who visited after the cyclone, and the tree kangaroos are a delight. The Tablelands has a gentle atmosphere, wonderful waterfalls, volcanic crater lakes and rainforest walks. There’s a great sense of community and the people are friendly people. What do you do in your spare time?
Roger is a volunteer firefighter and chairman of Tarzali Rural Fire Brigade. He spent one wet and stormy night assisting paramedics move a 180kg man with a broken hip. We spent a couple of years building an investment property which Roger designed and helped build it and we painted and landscaped it. Gardening is very rewarding as everything grows so well. We enjoy an occasional game of golf at Millaa Millaa which is the highest course in the state and has an honesty box, also lunches to restaurants that feature local organic products and buffalo cheese. Jan has completed a cheese-making course and regularly makes a range including camembert, blue, fetta, brie, ricotta, quark, Wensleydale and mozzarella. What are some of the Noosa memories? In 1986 we moved from the Mary Valley to Eumundi and designed a purpose built studio/home on acreage. The house was chosen as one of Home Beautiful magazine's homes of the year. We enjoyed the village ambience, being centrally positioned, proximity to the beach and restaurants. One of our most treasured memories is of our wedding at The Jetty where we later celebrated 19 consecutive
anniversaries with Eddie and Judy still at the helm. Another favourite was Filligan's where Pete provided the most welcoming and genuine hospitality. We exhibited regularly in solo and group shows. In 1988 our work was selected for World Expo Brisbane and in Seville in 1992. Commissions included pieces for Noosa and Sydney Councils, Hyatt Regency Coolum and Queensland Tourism - Memento Awards. We completed commissions for St. Mary's Church Maryborough, St. Thomas More Sunshine Beach and St. Patrick's Church Gympie for architect Maurice Hurst. Through our studio we met many people and were commissioned to do some interesting projects with a set of ceramic periwinkle shells for a special anniversary necklace being one of the more unusual. We continue to work for Trio's, La Vida and Eartharomas Herb Craft and private customers such as Susie Osmaston who requested a replacement for a 20 year old pot. Describe your work. It is mostly wheel thrown and influenced by the traditional decorating techniques of 17th Century England. Queensland's natural beauty and the vibrant colours of the outback, reef and rainforest provide the inspiration. Since establishing our own studio in 1979 there has been a gradual evolvement of style. The challenge of new themes for exhibitions and HIGHLY GLAZED commissions stimulates AND VIBRANTLY the imagination in new directions whilst exploring COLOURED differing forms and CORAL CAY SHELLS BOWLS colours. Jan continues to WERE work on refining shapes COMMISSIONED and at present is drawing AND PRESENTED on memories of a TO GUESTS childhood in North Africa and Europe and the decorative features of mosques and medieval cathedrals. Current clients include The Cairns Regional Gallery, Tolga Woodworks, Australis Gallery, Kuranda, The Village Gallery, Palm Cove and numerous resorts Australia wide. Where have you been in the news lately? The most recent exhibition was Earthlinks at the Cairns Regional Gallery, a sister city show linking places such as Zhanjiang in China, Minami and Oyama in Japan, Lae in Papua New Guinea and Riga in Latvia. Recent commissions include a mural for a private residence on Bainbridge Island, USA and a set of commemorative wedding platters. We were delighted to be one of the winners of the national 2008 Memento Australia Awards which meant that 400 more of the highly glazed and vibrantly coloured coral cay shells bowls were commissioned and presented to guests at a Tourism Australia’s G’Day USA gala event in New York. Since receiving the award Jan has appeared on television and in newspapers, been requested to judge a national ceramic competition and conduct workshops, invited to exhibit in Japan and received a congratulatory letter from Rod Welford MP.

Best tressed ... HAIR DAMAGE DURING SUMMER IS OFTEN UNAVOIDABLE HOWEVER STRESS-FREE TRESSES AND A HOT NEW LOOK ARE JUST A SNIP, CONDITION AND TINT AWAY. re you close to pulling your hair out because it is dull, flat and has split ends? Are you wondering where your lustrous locks have disappeared to? You’ve probably spent every available opportunity during the summer months submerged in the sea or pool. Being constantly exposed to salt and chlorine will cause the cuticle to lift from the cortex leaving it scaly and uplifted. Ditto overexposure to heat from blow drying. Also chemical treatments such as bleaching, perms, straightening and colouring will break or even strip away the cuticle if they’re not followed by regular after-care treatment. Blondes may have more fun except in chlorinated pools which have a propensity to turn hair green. Time to take to the bottle tomato sauce that is, if you want to restore those golden strands. Rough towel drying and using towel turbans cause hairs to rub together resulting in breakage and frizzing, as does backcombing and excessive pulling with a comb or brush. When in the sun, mane damage can be avoided by wearing a hat. Try to blot your hair dry, and why not put away the hair dryer for a few days allowing it to dry naturally. If the blow dryer is a must, attach a nozzle to the dryer and aim it down the length of the hair, never against it as it will fray it and take away the shine. Adopt a regime of regularly shampooing to remove the accumulated sebum, dust, dirt; conditioning wet hair restores smoothness and shine; and keep it in peak condition by

G man hits Rhythm, romance and radio are an integral part of Sunrise Beach resident Kenny G Griffith’s life in the fast lane. ynamic entertainer ‘G. Man' as he’s affectionately known, hails from Trinidad and Tobago. In Bermuda he performed with The Real Thing steel band for 16 years followed by ten years cruising the Caribbean and the Mediterranean out of Canada, performing on five-star liners. Whilst on board he met Julie Roberts. No not Julia the Hollywood starlet but in Kenny’s eyes, equally gorgeous. “She’s Australian-born and was managing the boutique on the ship,” recalls Kenny.“When I went back to Canada, she returned to Greece. We just kept writing and talking to each other, then lost touch, finally finding each other again in 1997, realizing we missed each other and had something special going on.” He married Julie and lived in Sydney for a year before finding nirvana. “We bought a lovely house at Sunrise Beach then left the country to apply for residency at the Australian Embassy in Canada. Shortly afterwards it became official.” Kenny has a son, daughter and four grandchildren living in Bermuda while his other son Derek 'Boogie Man' Payne, who has his own band, partner Suzi Webber and their 9-year old son Marlachi live in Coolum. Julie’s family and her daughter also live nearby. Kenny has helped increase awareness and popularity for Caribbean music throughout the country and via his popular radio show The Caribbean Connection and Beyond, which airs on Australia's number one-voted community radio station FM 101.3.

Kenny loves life, his friends, fresh prawns, music of course but most of all he performing and having fun with the greatest party people on the planet. He plays drums with The Pantastics Steel Band, a local group that started out with humble beginnings and now is in great demand everywhere in Australia. Kenny also plays percussion and sings with the popular group The Banana Republic led by local Blues legend Al Hensley and featuring the sultry sax sounds of Kath Williams. His long awaited album Yours Truly includes a classic selection of hits from around the world from Quando Quando, Unforgettable, What a Wonderful World and Low Rider as well as original tracks sung in Kenny’s incomparable style. “This is a tremendously personal CD to me and I hope everyone enjoys listening to it as much as I have enjoyed making it,” says a proud Kenny who hired local music producer Robbie Ruger plus local musicians and backing singers.” Kenny, an Australian Citizen and Justice of the Peace, recently returned from a very successful tour as part of a steel band at the Melbourne World Global Music Festival representing the Caribbean. He loves to cook Caribbean-style fare such as curried goat and lamb and went to a Thai cooking school. “I enjoy cooking Thai however there’s a down-side to all the eating – I go to the gym because I’m hell-bent on losing my stomach,” says Kenny adding Julie works as a volunteer for Tourism Noosa and at the op-shop plus casually for the Noosa Queen River Cruise Boat, so she too is busy.

s the spot.. Fellow Noosan and friend Cathy Young who’s a Juno award-winning singer and regarded by Kenny as his adopted sister, revealed that Kenny also has a penchant for acting:“He was originally slated to play Horse in the Jally Productions of The Full Monty but because of subsequent scheduling problems a replacement had to be found. He asked his pal Hollywood Herb who said he would do it. “Well, neither Kenny nor Jally mentioned the lineup change to anyone and half of Noosa, mostly women needless to say, turned up on opening night expecting to see Kenny's Full Monty. While Herb didn't disappoint, there were still complaints about missing Kenny in the buff. I know. I was there.”

The love of so many little girls’ lives has turned 50. ard to believe it, but who would have thought that Barbie, the iconic blonde with the world’s best wardrobe, would be turning 50. With the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a backdrop and surrounded by ten little girls, all dressed in Barbie pink of course, television celeb Erika Heynatz sang Happy Birthday to a 2.1 metre tall Barbie cake created by fashion designer Alex Perry, jeweler Stefano Canturi, hairdresser to the stars Joh Bailey and cake designer extraordinaire Anthea Leonard. Barbie sparkled in her mud cake and icing creation encrusted with Swarovski crystal created by Alex; her perfectly quaffed hair was styled by Joh and just for the occasion she wore $50,000 of Canturi jewels. Having always been known for her impeccable fashion sense, Barbie’s party outfit was made using 500kg of chocolate mud cake, 50kg of chocolate, 600 eggs, 100kg of sugar, 250 kg of chocolate ganache, 12 litres of sugar syrup, 70kg of icing and 200 flowers instead of her usual fantastic plastic. The spectacular cake form was inspired by the Australian tradition of home-made Barbie birthday cakes, featuring a Barbie doll inserted into a pyramid of chocolate mud cake and frosting. The world’s largest Barbie cake was devoured by the party guests. If you would like to catch up with Barbie and happen to be in Melbourne from 26th June to 12th July, check out the largest collection of Barbie Dolls ever assembled in the Southern Hemisphere at the Forever Barbie Exhibition in Federation Square.

5 reasons your problems aren’t being solved and 5 ways to solve them... Productive Thinking e x p e r t , K e n Wa l l , t e l l s us the five things we do to hinder productive thought processes and the five things we can d o t o t h i n k b e t t e r. Five reasons your problems aren’t being solved:
1. Thinking that you can’t! Whether you think you can or you can’t achieve something, in both cases you’ll be right. Negative expectations or a pessimistic view will ensure you don’t put enough energy into finding a better way. So think about what ‘could be’. Ask “what would an optimist would do in this situation?”
2. Using the same reasoning that got you to where you are. Einstein put it perfectly when he said; “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Challenge your problem solving methods. Learn some new approaches.
3. Follow the silly rule: “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” Unless of course, you would prefer to still be using a typewriter. The best bet is to look at the things that DO work to find out why, and then make them even better.
4. Blame and recrimination.
3. Draw a picture of the problem.
It’s unbelievable how much energy is wasted on making sure someone else carries the can. One political party blames the other, management blame the staff, husband blames the wife, children blame the parents, and parents blame the school. Think what MIGHT be possible if we decided to work together to find solutions!
Then think about what it would be like to have already solved the problem and draw a picture of what that might look like. This forces you to use your ‘right-brain’ to describe the situation rather than using the more conventional ‘left-brain’ listing process.
4. Ask lots of questions - ask lots of people. 5. Fear of being wrong. We often don’t put forward enough ideas because we worry too much about whether people will like them or not. There is no such thing as a bad idea. Five things we can do to help us think more productively:
1. Take time to understand what’s going on. What’s the itch, what bugs you about the current situation? Make a note of EVERYTHING you know about the situation, who else is involved and WHY it bugs you. Make sure you are not determined to ‘buy a house in the country’ when the real problem is proximity to the in-laws. Be sure that you are asking the right question before you start searching for the best solution
2. Look in different places for solutions. Go to the bookshop and buy a couple of magazines you have never bought before. Search different articles for new perspectives. You’ll be amazed at the different approaches to problem solving adopted by different interest groups. You might even find that fresh ideas just pop out of the page!
It just doesn’t matter if you don’t have the best solution at your fingertips. In fact, if you do find a solution straight away, it’s more than likely to not be the best one. The more options and opinions you have, the better your solution will be. But make sure you ask a variety of people – if you ask a dozen accountants you are very likely to come up with a financial solution. Maybe ask the butcher as well. And listen to their reply – generally speaking if your lips are moving, you are not learning much.
5. Separate your thinking. It’s just not possible to think ‘creatively’ and to think ‘critically’ at the same time. First use creative thinking techniques to list all the ideas that come to mind. Make sure to include the really wild ideas in the list! Then choose the best idea to work on for the moment. You can always go back and choose another option later. So make lists, then make choices.

a passion for sound... MUSIC IS A PAINTING IN TIME. LIKE GREAT ART AND GREAT CUISINE, GREAT MUSIC ADDS IMMEASURABLY TO OUR ENJOYMENT OF LIFE. hile the music loses its form from each moment, the sound dissipated in ghostly movements of air, memory derives, from frozen instants, the themes, musical arguments, structures and magical conclusions that capture our imagination. In these challenging times, consider Beethoven and how he responded to adversity. While the contemporaneous musical public revered Beethoven, late in his life, in the 1820s, his music had become out of favour, supposedly too hard to play, too complicated to hear. Yet Beethoven continued to compose, continued with an inward compulsion to be true to his muse, resulting in his late quartets and piano sonatas. And although he was by that time clinically deaf, he was compelled, with his music heard only in his mind, to write for eternity, and perhaps for a much later generation to admire and be transported.
W
Today, Beethoven’s most difficult music is revelatory. He wrote music that broke the rules, magically creating insights into humanity beyond the merely musical. He created a new language of thinking, hearing and feeling, based on sound and the deceptively dry notation and representation of notes and silences, paintings in time, with sound providing the palette of musical hues. Without Beethoven, and not forgetting the other great masters of intonation and consonance, humanity would be less. When wonderful music is heard at a live concert, we can experience at first hand what the composer may have intended. But if we enjoy the same music in our own home, on great speakers that faithfully reproduce any of the orchestras we choose in the world, or any of its musicians, when we have that at our fingertips, how fortunate we are. You may enjoy the pianist Ben Zander’s talk on music and passion at www.ted.com/index.php/talks/b enjamin_zander_on_music_and_p assion. At fi, music is our passion.

With its natural timbers, nautical lines and five-star accoutrements, the Hall’s home is evocative of a boutique hotel and shrieks of must-move-in-now style. Take a simple two bedroom cottage in Arkana Drive and apply the similar architectural and design principles which have been used by the consummate boaties for over 30 years in many Noosa houses and famous restaurants, such as their own Coconut Grove at Sunshine Beach. The bistro and bar, managed by Leonie Palmer-Fisher and Steve Fisher, is where location-perfect pupus take centre stage, there’s a getdown vibe, the ceiling fans are colonial-era and the overall look is casual, sophisticated, plantation coastal and definitely cool. Not dissimilar to their home which has morphed into a three bedroom, two bathroom masterpiece. On the elevated side of the tree-lined street you are greeted by one of the ex-boat builder and cabinet maker Geoff’s distinctive monikers, that of pineapple cut-outs stamped into the gates. When opened via the visual intercom, a sun-drenched, very private pool area is revealed. Throw back the bifolds on the side of the house from the open-plan living, high-ceilinged dining and kitchen with their beautiful spotted gum flooring, and the outdoor room and barbecue area with its trickling water fall and pond, becomes the perfect playground for entertaining. Ditto the massive roofed deck which seamlessly slides to the outdoors and has railings and a marine-look timber flooring, redolent of the prow of a boat. Needless to say cocktails and stunning sunsets are de rigueur. continues next page NoosaStyleLiving

As well as graceful fronds their trunks are often ornamental. “Palms are the ideal plant choice to lend Noosa gardens a tropical feel,” says Outside Noosa’s gardening guru John Scomparin, who recommends a free draining soil which is rich in organic matter so moisture is retained. “Palms are ideally suited to pool areas. They are mostly clean plants that either shed leaves infrequently or hang on to them tightly so that it’s necessary to cut them off. The root systems of even the largest palms should not present any problems in poolside settings. They look great planted in clusters and they combine well with other dramatic foliage plants such as cordyline and dracaena. “Potted palms are versatile, adding a decorative, even architectural, element to an indoor space and can also help create a lush tropical look on balconies or in gardens with limited space. Rhapis palms can be used to great effect here. “Palms that feature prominently in our landscapes include the Foxtail, which has one of the most spectacular foliage displays of all palms, the Bangalow palm or Piccabeen ,

Cabbage Tree palm, Canary Islands date palm, Kentia palm, especially popular for indoors and the Parlour palm. When the budget is no object, mature Cuban Royal or Dwarf date palms planted as stand-alone add a definite wow factor to any garden.” Phillip O’Malley is a big fan of palms having used them in many of his award-winning garden designs:“They are a classic symbol of the tropics, are reminiscent of balmy days and holiday memories, and for sub-tropical dwellers, they can seem too ubiquitous,” says Phillip who advises against having a collection with one of every type.“Palms have such particular forms and different species can clash when put together. It’s best to choose one or two species and use them well. “An avenue of palms lends a classic element to design; a copse or group planting gives a naturalistic look; some palms have such striking form that they can be used in a modern sculptural way; always use palms with care; and balance vertical form with layers of groundcovers, shrubs and trees. “Bottle and Spindle palms are perfect for small coastal

and help retain a local landscape flavour. Bangalows are great for small or narrow garden “Licuala palms are particularly beautiful with large round crinkle-cut fronds and best in protected spots as patio plants or under trees; Solitaire and Macarthur palms which have bamboo-slender stems with pretty leaves are an alternative to the common golden cane. “The native Walking Stick palm is a little-grown palm with chains of edible red fruit and looks great en-masse. Its stems were once harvested for walking sticks so perhaps this is a plant to grow now for your retirement.”

She perfected and expanded her craft, opened offices in Malaysia and Vietnam, received lots of media attention, but always knew that a return to Australia and more specifically Noosa was inevitable. Plus she would then reconnect with her friend Stephanie Harrison who she regards as a “soul sister, even reading the same books”. For 20 years artistic Stephanie has been highly sought after for her interior designs. She specializes in eclectic and timeless designs, renovating, furniture packages, colour consultancy plus specifications for new and existing homes. She concurs with Shara that they have a shared philosophy of Shara Spencer Jurss & Stephanie “not following fashion trends and Harrison living with things that make your heart sing. Getting rid of everything when you move here is like cutting the umbilical cord of your tapestry of life.” “Why not mix the timeless with quirky or eclectic,” suggests Shara.“A chair covered in a mad fabric; a bold-coloured wall using wallpaper, perhaps stripes with something contemporary.” In 2000 Shara returned to Noosa and recently Stephanie, who with equally clever hubby Charlie is relocating to Bali, asked her if she would interested in her business which is located at WD Would Designs in Mary Street. Shara leapt at the opportunity. “I felt so honoured and so proud to continue the business which will be known as Harrison Interior Design by Shara.”

Maybe black isn’t the best way to go, come to think of it, white probably isn’t either, but the important factor is it’s all about you, your lifestyle, what matters most to you and what you want to get out of life. It is a location synonymous with laid back luxury, fine food, culture, beautiful beaches and natural surrounds. Over 1.7 million visitors flock to Noosa each year, keen to experience a touch of ‘Noosa style’. The new $300million Viridian Resort and Spa will deliver yet more style and luxury to Noosa when it opens for business in April 2010. Currently under construction, the Leighton Properties and Macquarie Group of Companies Joint Venture project is located on Noosa Hill, just off Hastings Street. The resort will feature144 premium one and two bedroom suites and 54 luxurious villas and penthouses with a total capacity for over 700 guests. Lucky holidaymakers will enjoy access to a deluxe day spa, conference centre, bar and licensed restaurant all just footsteps away from Noosa’s National Park and Main Beach. ver recent years, units and townhouses have been the most affordable option for first home buyers, but this trend is currently taking a breather, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). As house prices escalated, units and townhouses were the most affordable – and often the only – option for first home buyers. But with the $14,000 and $21,000 boost monies now available, many first-time buyers can now afford to buy a modest house instead. “This trend, plus investors not yet comprehensively returning to the market, means the unit and townhouse market has been affected by lower overall demand in the December quarter. Over the year, however, most areas recorded steady price growth,” REIQ chairman Peter McGrath said. Following a state-wide property trend, there has been a
of Australia’s favourite holiday locations. It has been over 20 years since the last five star resort was built in the Hastings Street precinct. When Viridian opens next year, holidaymakers and investors will agree that it has been worth the wait. Want to know more? • There are currently 16 luxurious, strata-titled three and four bedroom Viridian Beach Villas ranging in size from a generous 350 sqm to 586 sqm on offer through Tom Offermann Real Estate. Price tags range from $3.2 million $5.9 million. • Colliers International is marketing the one-bedroom, twobedroom and twin key investment units, which start from $656,000. • For those wishing to purchase at Viridian a 10% deposit is required with settlement not due until 2010. For international buyers, Viridian is also Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) approved. • For more information about the Viridian Resort & Spa visit www.viridiannoosa.com.au or for more information on the Viridian Beach Villas on Little Hastings Street, visit www.beachvillasnoosa.com
notable increase in the number of affordable units and townhouses sold. REIQ figures show about 85 per cent of all unit and townhouse sales were for under $500,000 in the December quarter, up from 79 per cent six months before. This increase in the number of affordable unit sales has lowered the median price in many areas of the State. “Some regional areas have also been affected by new developments – perhaps begun during the highs of 2007 – coming on to the market simultaneously,” Mr McGrath said. “And given this oversupply in some areas – as well as restricted access to finance – land previously ear-marked for unit developments is remaining undeveloped.” While there have been mixed results across the State, the unit and townhouse market is likely to stage a come-back as demand from investors increases. First home buyers are also expected make a return as the stock of affordable houses is depleted by the current strong demand.

KNOWING Directed by: Alex Proyas Starring: Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn &Terry Camilleri In 1958, as part of the dedication ceremony for a new elementary school, a group of students is asked to draw pictures to be stored in a time capsule. But one of the students, a mysterious girl who seems to hear whispered voices, fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead. Fast forward 50 years to the present: A new generation of students examines the contents of the time capsule and the girl's cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Myles. But it is Caleb's father, professor Ted Myles (Nicolas Cage), who makes the startling discovery - that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As Ted further unravels the document's secrets, he realizes it foretells three additional events—the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve Ted and his son. When Ted's attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place.

Caroline Magerl... a natural story teller aving spent her first 20 years cruising the east coast of Australia aboard her
H
families’ yacht, it is little surprise that artist, Caroline Magerl, has once again returned to live on the Sunshine Coast. Once described as a ‘Painter’s painter’, her
work is known both nationally and internationally for her evocative portraits, whimsical animals, quirky cartoons and fabulous children’s illustrations. Given an opportunity to learn the art of printmaking with master printmaker, Deborah Perrow, she left Eumundi two years ago to experience the city life of Canberra. Along with these new experiences and adventures came an introduction to other members of the art world. As much as they loved their new life, Caroline and her family missed Queensland, the landscape, the weather, the water... It was hard to turn her back on a lifetime spent in the tropics. It was only natural they would return to the Coast. A natural story teller, she can paint an image in your mind with words as cleverly as she can paint a story on canvas. Even with a sombre subject, there is always a quirky little glint in her eye. This hidden element is to be found by the admirers of her work. Caroline feels that to paint, she needs to be “in love” and “right up to my neck in it.” Quoting Novalis “the seat of the soul is where the inner and outer world meet, that is what I feel I am dealing with, a sort of poetic subtext of life”. Caroline is a modest women, who crosses all aspects of the artistic world. As well as painting, she continues to illustrate for ABC books, will soon take up a Residency in Melbourne with the Children’s Book Council and was recently approached by an Italian literacy movement, headed by Aeronwy Thomas (Dylan Thomas’s daughter), to include some of her paintings in their international blog. The Coast has been a major part of my life over the last 8 years. It has been the inspiration for much of my work and has a distinct context with the area and in particular this gallery. It seemed only natural to have my latest paintings shown here. Caroline will be exhibiting a collection of new works at The Gallery Eumundi from 3 April.

NoosaStyleliving Beautiful art to be discovered in Buderim... Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery, is one of Queensland’s most beautiful galleries and promises to be a delightful experience for art buffs keen to discover more galleries on the Sunshine Coast. Tucked away in the pretty mountain village of Buderim which is only 35 minutes from Noosa and 10 minutes from Mooloolaba, the gallery is housed in a charming and intriguing cottage that is bursting with beautiful art in a picturesque garden setting. Year-round Tiffany Jones Fine Art shows the region’s biggest selection of fine Australian investment art as well as vibrant contemporary and decorative work by talented painters from all over Australia. Gracing the walls of the cottage are original paintings by our nation’s most eminent artists, including David Boyd, Robert Dickerson, Pro Hart, Hans Heysen, Albert Namatjira, Sidney Nolan, John Perceval, Geoffrey Proud, Hugh Sawrey and Tim Storrier. The gallery also offers a large selection of Norman Lindsay works being the Queensland specialist in art by this legendary painter of the female form. In addition to their impressive selection of prestigious and collectable paintings, from April till June this year Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery is also offering art collectors a range of monthly focus showings by some of their most popular and talented artists. In April 2009 marvel at the classically beautiful paintings by Joseph Frost, one of Australia’s most skilled marine artists. Frost’s evocative and romantic oil paintings of ships and the sea convey a highly realistic depiction of the fall of light over water with harmonious tones and exacting intricate detail. Then go on a flight of fancy in May when the gallery unveils whimsical and vibrant new art by Vivienne Heckels at her “Songs of the Bush” focus. Vivienne’s textured, quirky and highly original paintings of children and animals playing against a backdrop of mystical bush and seascapes exude freedom and happiness. Vivienne’s affordable original works are exclusively shown in Queensland at Tiffany Jones Fine Art. The beauty and character of Australia’s landscape and people will be the theme of new art by talented painters Robert Todonai and Robert Pope at their feature focus “Two Bob’s Worth” during June. Working from a fascinating stone castle, these artists have a refined impressionist style with oils that have appealing colour, beautiful graduated tone and a quality finish.
MOST COLLECTABLE - SEE THEM AT PUTIPULA GALLERY The recent Australian Art Collector magazine (the Bible for serious art collectors) highlights 50 of Australia's most collectable artists of 2009 and they have named Tjala Arts as one of the most exciting Indigenous Art Centres this year. The really exciting thing is that you don't have to travel 3,000km to see this vibrantly brilliant work, it's right here in Noosa at Putipula Gallery. "Tjala Arts, a relatively new centre at Amata in the far north west of South Australia (known as the APY lands) and it is certainly one to watch," says Putipula Gallery owner, Gillian Steel. "They are fostering some strong artists with senior artist Ruby Williamson leading the way. With a successful debut solo exhibition at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi held recently and her work being acquired by the Art Gallery of South Australia, Ruby and other artists from this art centre are really in demand." Other artists from Tjala Arts also making impressions with serious collectors include Ray and Lucy Ken, Tiger Palpatja and Barbara Mbitjana Moore. Beside Tjala Arts over eight significant art centres including the stunning work from Tjungu Palya (also featured in the Art Collector Magazine) in the APY lands - an area that has seen a veritable explosion of exceptional art in the last few years can be viewed at Putipula all year round. Gillian Steel selects and collects the work from the art centres personally and ensures that all the artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity issued directly from the art centre to guarantee the provenance of the work. If you haven't been to see the work at Putipula Gallery yet, prepare yourself for a visual feast. The vivid colours of the desert and the atmosphere that Gillian has created in the gallery can see you happily waste a few hours being entranced by the energy of the colours and the richness of the stories. Hong Kong sevens... Seven good reasons to visit (well ten – we always like a bargain) Don't hang out in Hong Kong if the credit card is maxed, eating isn't your thing, or you prefer B & Bs to big cities. Hong Kong is big, brash and bloody delicious. Bring it on. 1. Eat goose at Yung Kee... A posh roast-meat specialist restaurant heaving with salarymen. The award-winning menu for two is good value and the goose is so good you'll never eat duck again. Bookings essential info@yungkee.com.hk, 32-40 Wellington Street, Central.
Hutong... For arguably the world's most exciting bar/restaurant-with-a-view followed by the world's prettiest and death defyingly hot chilli dish (soft-shell crab with Szechwan peppers), make tracks to Levels 30 and 28, 1 Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. 5. Yum cha at Luk Yu Tea House... You'll have to bully the grumpy man at the door to get in, but you'll be glad you did. Exquisite tea, beef balls and egg tarts – you'll be in dim sum heaven. (Tip: head straight up the stairs on the left. Do not stop.) 24 Stanley Street, Central. Victoria Seafood Restaurants in Admiralty and Wanchai also have great yum cha with views.

Join the procession of ferries filled with HK families to this outlying island. Choose a fresh fish or crab from the tank, some live prawns, and have them returned to your table smothered in black beans, chilli and garlic, all washed down with Tsingtao. Book Rainbow Seafood Restaurant and take advantage of their free ferry shuttle from Kowloon or Central, only 40 minutes. Bookings on 852 29828100. 3. Visit the flower and bird markets... Be amazed by the bouquets being ferried away by amahs, and the perfect rose buds, then head around the corner to the bird markets, where you'll find sparrows, parrots, worms and grasshoppers all for sale. Get off at Prince Edward MTR and follow the signs. 4. Toast Hong Kong at Aqua Spirit then eat at
6. Dinner at l'Atelier Joel Robuchon... Blow the budget and be blown away with a sublime 'small tastes' dinner at Robuchon's 36seater bar. Ogling the 2000-plus wine list is enough for some like a certain Stuart Gregor. 4th Floor, The Landmark, Central. 7. Half-price designer frocks... The first three floors of this building next to Shanghai Tang are filled with shops flogging last season's gear (Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Pucci). It can be hard work finding the good stuff, so leave the menfolk at home. 12 Pedder Street, Central. (Tip: maybe go before # 6). 8. Yin Yang... Hong Kong's first female celebrity chef, Margaret Xu Yuan, serves up organics, 'soup without water' and the best pig in town at her
tiny restaurant in Wanchai. BYO, set menus and a minimum of four people only. Bookings essential booking@yinyang.hk, 18 Ship Street, Wanchai. A Hong Kong restaurant you only hear about. 9. And.... Marvel at the MTR, go up to the Peak, catch the Star Ferry, wander around the Peninsula's lobby, go to every big-name store for the best in retailing (Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton), visit Sasa for cosmetics, head to the lower ground floor of the Ocean Terminal for kids stuff, wander Hollywood Road for homewares, and the Man Mo temple, go for night Friday drinks in Lan Kwai Fong, search out a foot massage, and hunt down a 'copy bag' store – just ask the local gweilos (or G & L) where to go. 10. Don't go to Stanley but do... Stay in Kowloon for the better views. The Sheraton Hotel & Towers on Nathan Road, is incredibly central (opposite the Peninsula) and has great packages, including breakfast and harbour views. udi is once again producing a five-cylinder engine – and a special one at that. Arriving at European dealerships from mid-year, the TT RS features a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine with direct fuel injection; it produces 250 kW and 450 Nm of torque. The blazing fivecylinder engine enables the TT RS to perform extraordinary feats. In conjunction with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and a highperformance chassis, the engine makes the compact Audi TT RS a top-notch sports car – and is available in either coupé or roadster guise. Sporty five-cylinder petrol engines have a long legacy at Audi. The power-to-weight ratio is also outstanding. In the case of the Coupé, which weighs in at a mere 1,450 kilograms The Roadster has a weight of 1,510 kilograms – thanks to its extremely lightweight and largely aluminium body constructed as per the Audi Space Frame principle. The TT RS Coupé rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds; the Roadster needs just a tenth of a second longer. Almost even more impressive is the aggressive pulling power. The maximum torque of 450 Nm is available between 1,600 and 5,300 rpm. In addition, the TT RS overtakes without the slightest effort. Compact and Lightweight: The Five-cylinder TFSI...As an uncompromising sports-car engine, the 2.5-litre TFSI is ultra-compact. Just 49 centimetres in length, it is ideally suited for transverse installation in the TT RS. And its weight of just 183 kilograms also sets a record. The ultra-powerful five-cylinder engine is extremely fuel-efficient, requiring an average of just 9.2 litres/100 km as regards the Coupé (Roadster: 9.5 l/100 km). For Purists: The sportiest version in the TT model line boasts 18-inch wheels fitted with 245/45 tyres. They are complemented by ventilated disc brakes, which measure 370 millimetres in diameter at the front and 310 millimetres at the rear. So that heat dissipates quickly, the front friction rings are perforated. They, in turn, are connected by hollow pins to the aluminium brake discs, which are encircled by black four-piston brake calipers made of aluminium and bearing RS logos.
A
The Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) can be switched off partially or entirely. In Sport mode, the engine does not intervene to monitor traction and, correspondingly, the brakes engage later than otherwise. In the second mode, the ESP is fully deactivated. The Face of Power: The Exterior At just 4.20 metres in length, the vigorously compact Audi TT RS hints at its explosive potential from the very first glimpse. The front spoiler tapers downward into a splitter, reminiscent of a racing car. The large and squared
air inlets have diamond-shaped inserts. And the high-gloss black single frame grille with a frame in matt aluminium look and the TT RS badge bear the same styling. The xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights notify faraway drivers that an Audi TT RS is approaching. Exclusive Character: Interior and Equipment Package The entire interior is black. The heated sports seats feature an Alcantara/leather combination with silver contrasting stitching and embossed TT RS logos in the front backrests. Additional badges and logos appear on the steering wheel, in the rev counter, and on the door sill trims. The inlays are made from brushed aluminium. Floor mats feature silver piping trim; footrests and pedals are in aluminium look. Audi offers TT RS customers a diverse range of optional equipment: variably styled wheels measuring 18, 19 or 20 inches in diameter.

Throughout Noosa and into the surrounding hinterland, eating out at any one of dozens of restaurants, cafes and assorted eateries, is a travel experience to remember. There
are many wonderful restaurants on the Sunshine Coast. With the prodigious farming community supplying a wondrous selection of specialised salads, herbs, Asian vegetables, red-claw lobsters and ducks; it is no wonder that the region’s chefs are so creative. NORTHSHORE/ COLOURED SANDS Across the river to the North Shore, a four wheel drive will take you along more than 40km of pristine sands, past the magnificent coloured sands of Teewah, the time-worn shipwreck of the Cherry Venture, and on to Rainbow Beach. From here it is a short ferry ride to world heritage listed Fraser Island – the world’s largest sand island. Full and half day tours operate from Noosa regularly, and four wheel drive hire cars are available from several companies.
