welcome welcome contents It’s our 10th Birthday edition... time to pop the champagne corks, party and celebrate

Kaylene Murray - Editor

Where have 10 years gone? I keep looking at my Editor's picture and thinking I haven't held up too badly over the years. Then Tom happily points out that that photograph is now 10 years old! And, he will shoot a new one especially for this milestone issue. I'm not sure that’s a good idea. I've happily stayed away from Botox, plastic surgeons and weight loss clinics all these years, because I am a natural woman. Of course, that doesn't mean that I don't colour out the grey hair, put on makeup to disguise the march of time - or choose my wardrobe carefully to accentuate the better aspects of my womanly shape. Now, with a new photograph glaring at me - it will be hard to pretend that I haven't aged. Or that 10 years haven't elapsed since our first issue hit the streets of Noosa. Oh well, at least I'm still here - still happy - and still enjoying fantastic food, stunning wines and the company of interesting and diverse people in the Sunshine State and around the country. What more could I want? Oh that's right - some more money would be lovely! Luckily our 10th Birthday issue is full of wonderful things to take my mind off the photo. I will take this opportunity to thank wholeheartedly our supportive advertisers, many of whom have been with us for the entire ten years. I would also like to thank Di Baxter and Helen Flanagan for their hard work, ongoing support and assistance in the production of our beautiful magazine. We couldn't do it without you girls! And let's not forget the boys - Tom and Joshua do a fantastic job ensuring that all the artwork and photography are whipped into shape - and deadlines are met. Under their dynamic direction NOOSA Style always looks sensational While thanking all the people who have made NOOSA Style Magazine such a success, I would also like to thank all the wonderful people who have let us into their lives and homes over that period as well. Their generosity of spirit has been uplifting. Our magazine's long-standing love affair with colour and design, are apparent in this issue, with our pages laden with desirable artworks, jewellery, fashion and accessories. This season's trends ooze style and desirability, with local and international designers showcasing their latest styles and accessories. Our food and wine features are full of tantalising options; and our home, design and lifestyle features highlight the latest trends. For those who love superior motoring, we bring you the first glimpse of the highly desirable new Aston Martin Rapide - a true 4seater sports car, due for release on the Australian market in July; All in all - everything you could possibly need this season to keep you entertained and inspired. To celebrate our 10th Birthday year, we will be holding a couple of fabulous lunches over the coming year - and you are invited to attend. Please keep checking our website for details on how you can be part of the celebrations. Please raise your glasses and toast our 10th Birthday issue...

The offer to promote the famous sunglasses in Australia, the US and Canada in exchange for a few pairs of shades, all happened around the 5th, 6th and 7th holes of the Noosa Springs’ championship course. “I was also keen to do this shoot because Maui Jim helps Golf Fore Africa,” says Katherine. “I support the

She has enlisted the help of golfers worldwide to raise funds and awareness within the golfing community.” Brisbane-based photographer Vincent Long, who has worked internationally since 1990 and has won prizes such as the Head On Portrait Prize 2009 in Sydney, had the pleasurable task of capturing Katherine in her best light, sporting arguably the best frames in a perfect location.

jazz and gypsy to cowboy. James Morrison said: “Putting Tedeschi and Cooper together is like mixing nitro with glycerine – an explosion of musical variety.” Hosting the dinner was lanky PJ Lane who obviously has showbiz in his genes just like his late father Don who suffered from dementia. Blue Vase, donated by talented artist David Hart went under the hammer and raised additional funds.

Manager Noosa Shelter, Nicole Cleary. “It’s going to be fresh and funky while also incorporating peaceful garden areas for people to enjoy plus education areas where you might watch a DVD to learn about such things as pet ownership. The focus will be on families to visit, say hello to our animals and spend time in an uplifting environment, whether or not they are interested in purchasing a pet.” Almost $25,000 was raised.

They were joined by four-legged friends in need, their guardians and television’s Bondi Vet, Dr Chris Brown to help raise funds for a much needed refurbishment of the adoption centre at the shelter and to upgrade their online technology for better public awareness in support of the rehoming of animals. “Once the renovations are done, the Noosa shelter will be more welcoming and no longer a place of desperation,” says RSPCA

Simply the best experience... IT’S BEEN LAUDED AND APPLAUDED BY THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME OF FOOD AND WINE AFICIONADOS AS ONE OF THE BEST FOOD AND WINE FESTIVALS IN AUSTRALIA. n November 2003 there were 15 contributors and 100 attendees at the first Celebration of Australian Food and Wine Noosa-style, a creation of restaurateur Jim Berardo to promote producers, clever chefs and sensational winemakers and showcase their wares in one of the world’s most magical settings.“We’re taking what we see as a trend in the changing Australian palate and want to do a couple of things including tell the world about it - after all, I think our cuisine is one of the best kept secrets,” Jim said at the time,“and when I invited the participants to the weekend, the response was overwhelming. Maybe I’m sticking my neck out, but I have to say that Australia has unbelievable produce, food and wine – the best in the world.” Amongst the bevy of talent who attended were Stephanie Alexander, Greg Doyle, Matthew Evans, Gordon Gebbie, Stephen Henschke, Huon Hooke, Philip Johnson, Simon Johnson, John Lethlean, Peter Doyle, Luke Mangan, Lizzie Loel, Bruce Tyrrell and Matt McConnell. The events were simple but classy. A cocktail party and barbecue on the beach; panel discussion on Australian food, mini farmers market, wine tasting and lunch at berardo’s; panel discussion and lunch with producers at Coolabine Farmstead Goat’s Cheese in Noosa’s hinterland; and the finale, a seven course degustation. This of course was the genesis for the annual event which at this year’s Audi Noosa Food & Wine Festival, will be almost bursting at the seams with talent. Familiar names from 2003 have returned year after year and have been joined by 140 others; there are more degustations with more courses; the producer’s visit has developed into food trails and national producer’s awards; attendees are expected to be around 20,000, the main event is staged in a ‘village’; and there’s so much more In 2010 the Festival kicks off its seventh year of superlative Australian food and wine on 30 April, 2010. With over 100 new and signature events making up the three day celebration, there’s something for everyone with the appeal of Noosa in autumn adding to the festival’s ‘must experience’ reputation. “The backdrop of Noosa makes for a really relaxing and effortless guest experience, no doubt playing a part in attracting the hottest food and wine talent to the event each year. Easy access to the beautiful hinterland and coast allows us to host some very special and unique events that you just can’t be a part of anywhere else in Australia,” says Festival Director Jim Berardo. Audi Australia has taken top billing this year and is hosting one of two VIP Hospitality Pavilions for guests to soak up the event atmosphere alongside a second Pavilion hosted by Tassal Atlantic Salmon, Ashington / Valad and Westpac on three respective days. Lovers of quality food and wine can choose from food trails, degustation dinners, lifestyle lunches, cooking demonstrations, wine and champagne appreciation sessions, exhibitions and more. Each day the festival is capped off with great live concerts at the

Fresh from the paddock to plate this season are zucchini flowers from Landsborough, also Padron peppers, grown by Richard Mohan. “They are fantastic,” enthuses Daniel,“and we are using them in with chipotle and lime butter, sautéed prawns, cherry tomatoes, sweet corn and smoked prawn oil on pan fried snapper.” Daniel and wife Angela who runs front of house are also excited about new sous chef Nicholas Waring who, before returning home to Noosa has worked in some formidable establishments such as Brisbane’s GPO with P J McMillan and at Simpatico plus Byron Bay’s Dish restaurant and in-between “gaining experience from the other side, waiting tables in New York and planting, picking and selling organic produce at the London Farmer’s market.” Daniel says: “He makes bread on a daily basis and there’s nothing quite like warm home-made bread with Nolan's Road olive oil and Parmeggio Reggiano. “Diners are also raving about our new desserts especially the local fig, almond and vanilla goat's cheese millefeuille with honey and burnt caramel ice cream; and the Valrhona chocolate and licorice semifreddo with peanut praline banana, chocolate pearls and treacle.” And don’t forget a perfect meal at Blue Angel begins with the famous freshly shucked Coffin Bay oysters with jalapeno and lime ‘hot ice’.

Rock Salt on the move Panic not. Cassie and Stuart Webster, who have been restaurateurs on the Noosa Wharf since 1997, although they took a two year break to travel after who-can-everforget Pommies, have seized the opportunity to move everybody’s favourite BYO into their own premises two doors away. “Rock Salt’s new space is more intimate, has softer lighting, the interior décor is black, white and charcoal with bold black and white stripes on the feature walls, Italian tiles, is fully air-conditioned, and the cosy banquette seats have been retained,” explains chef Stu who serves dinner six nights, is closed on Sundays and will do lunches by reservation only for 15 people or more. Rock Salt remains BYO of course and the old favourites including crisp skinned roast duck will feature on the menu. New dishes to reflect the change in season include rigatoni stuffed with goats cheese and confit garlic with roasted crushed vineripened tomatoes and thyme; pork rib-eye, seared broccolini, chilli and roasted almonds with crisp sage and wholegrain mustard sauce; char grilled lamb rump, pan fried gnocchi, grilled eggplant and tomatoes with olives and mint oil; and for a decadent dessert how about rich Belgium white chocolate and orange mousse with vanilla bean biscotti.

Cruisin’ with Trio’s It’s all aboard the Noosa Queen for a sunset cruise, checking out Sir Richard Branson’s Makepeace Island as you meander along the Noosa River to Lake Cooroibah, sip a bevy from the licensed bar and on return dine at Trio’s. Enjoy three generous courses with choices. For bookings and departure times contact Trio’s at the Noosa Marina. The Fridays Happy Two Hours deal is a humdinger especially for oyster lovers, whether natural; grilled with bacon, roast garlic, plum and Worcestershire sauce; pickled ginger, shallots, wasabi and a lime drizzle; or with cheddar and chives, they’re half price as are cocktails between 4pm and 6pm. Great value extends to dinner and lunch specials and from the extensive a la carte menu if you’re a fan of Moreton Bay bugs you won’t be disappointed. They’re big, juicy and just so fresh.

It’s just about the coffee Lovers of exceptional fresh coffee continually stream into Gavin and Angela Piper’s Costa Noosa Espresso bar and roasting house in Sunshine Beach. Word is also out that the fresh-made-daily cakes especially the chocolate brownies and mixed berry cake are to die for. Oh and don’t forget the coffee beans dipped in chocolate. “For the last five years we have worked with green bean suppliers to source the best available 100% A-grade Arabica high altitude beans including organically and shade grown from specialty estates around the world,” say the Pipers who received bronze medals in two categories at the recent Australian Roasting Championships. “We roast daily to insure freshness and consistency. Blends include our signature Espresso Noosa which consists of green beans from South America, specially hand crafted to deliver a rich and velvety crema with a full bodied smooth flavour sure to suit all palates. The strongest and darkest roast is Cooloola Cool which holds itself exceptionally well in a milky latte or experience its smooth, full bodied, earthy and punchy flavours in a fresh espresso. “Capricorn is single origin medium dark bean from the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland; Yemen Ismali Mocha, our most prestigious coffee is a tiny green bean found on steep fertile terraces in the Middle East; and organic Swiss Water Decaf is organically grown on the mountain slopes of Peru. “With Costa wholesale it’s our philosophy to provide fresh consistently roasted coffee whilst maintaining a personalized, honest service. We understand the commitment needed to run a successful cafe, and strive to work with our customers as much as possible to contribute to their businesses success.” Gavin’s top tops for the home barista are: Ensure you have a good quality machine; use freshly roasted coffee; adjust the coffee grind to suit the machine; and after the machine has built up pressure, run a shot of hot water through the group head before you make a coffee as this can stop the coffee from tasting burnt.. “A great espresso is an endless quest and we invite you to call in and experience the fragrance, aroma and great taste for yourself.”

XO for X-cellence Sunshine Beach adds to its popularity with not one but three new venues. Embassy XO, previously Alegria Restaurant is an upstairs licensed modern Asian and Chinese restaurant plus cocktail bar, with indoor and covered outdoor dining. Executive chef, Brendon Barker, previously sous chef from the successful Melbourne Asian restaurant Ezard, has designed an exciting menu for up to 80 diners. XO Bistro Wine Bar, previously Wasabi Restaurant is located on the ground level and is a licensed and BYO beach-style bistro and wine bar serving pizzas, steaks and seafood in a more casual style. The Bistro includes indoor and outdoor dining for up to 100 people and a fabulous wine bar with 30 different wines. XO Cellars, which connects to the bistro is first-class boutique style bottle shop boasting over 700 wines and beers.

Anglers cast their lines in anticipation of hooking whiting; rollerbladers, scooters and walkers many with dogs on leashes, pound the meandering pavement; and cyclists use the dedicated pathway which is parallel to Gympie Terrace. Life down by the riverside and environs exudes a casual elegance and relaxed ambience and with its smorgasbord of restaurants, alfresco eateries and take-outs, there’s also a culinary tour of the world to be experienced and enjoyed. “It was one of the best jobs in the world,” says Duncan who followed with a stint training dolphins in the Bahamas before moving to Nice in France. “For nearly three years I worked with dolphins and killer whales at a huge marine park - an amazing experience. “I lived above a traditional Italian gelateria and shared an aperitif with the guys who worked there.” Duncan returned to Australia seeking new adventures and as a film location scout he worked on Fools Gold starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He met his soon-to-be wife Emma Sheehan, a midwife at the Selangor Private Hospital and their passion for gelato has seen them redefine ice cream shops. In six months Caribbean Dreams Gelati at Peregian Beach has earned an enviable reputation and become the toast of the coast, supplying numerous restaurants and cafes.

Keeping good company During exciting times in Europe, exotic-looking Jeroo Pavri found love in Switzerland with an Aussie, writes Helen Flanagan hen the Persians went to India for a better life, amongst the trailblazers were Jeroo Pavri’s forebears. In later years some moved to Hong Kong where Jeroo was born. These days when she returns for a visit, she’s often stopped by people who recognize the resemblance to her parents and her grandmother who incidentally is 102. After finishing her education, she moved to Switzerland and joined a hotel school however with the only option of poorly paid positions, she looked elsewhere. Fortunately Tiffany’s came along. Love weaved its magic with Glen Thomas who was involved in the skiing industry and two daughters later, they moved to Australia for a sea change. Not that we do everything backwards. “The stock was great, but I’d been spoilt living in Switzerland where I had access to the finest kitchenware,” explains Jeroo, who was born under the star sign of Leo and has a penchant for watches, with an art deco original, rating in the top eight.“Now we bring in so much, from traditional tagines, authentic little clay pots from Thailand, fully forged knives from France, affordable tinlined copperware that’s comparable to the best, excellent German brushware in natural timbers with real, not nylon bristles, nonchemical French bathware and kitchen products, and French linen to, let’s not forget the hit of every food festival – our ostrich feather dusters.” On-line shopping started 12 moths ago as did the Food Company across the way. “The real foodie attraction is next door, where they’ve opened a very cool deli-café. It’s great for a coffee and berry slice, or for stocking up on excellent smallgoods, cheese, crackers or frozen meals.” Matt Preston said in delicious magazine recently. Praise indeed. The consummate foodie, like chefs George Calombaris, Neil Perry and Matt Moran, who all met Jeroo at the annual Noosa Food Festival, dine with her when she visits their city. Jeroo loves to cook with North African fare often on the menu however Indian is the favourite for friends, daughters Morgana, 14 who’s at boarding school in Melbourne, Sameena 9, son Shahan 7 and Glen who’s known for his barbecues. The kids have discerning palates choosing from an adult’s menu with preference for carpaccio, oysters with “little orange beads” (salmon pearls) and squid ink fettuccini, as opposed to ordinary kid’s-style food. Jeroo is looking forward to the next Noosa Food Festival where most of the chefs leave their egos at the door, demonstrations are in more intimate surroundings than other festivals, chefs are candid rather than rehearsed, and the Wasabi party is a fitting finale to a hectic weekend of supplying chefs with cookware and selling spatulas, fry pans, pizza ovens and of course feather dusters to the twenty thousand who are expected to attend.

Cookoothama as good as it gets... With the GFC still not exactly a distant memory, many lovers of fine wine have tightened their purse strings accordingly. One of the most commonly asked questions asked about wine is - "what wine can I buy that is good enough to take to dinner with friends but won't put a strain on the family budget?" Once again the Nugan family is providing consumers with wines that hit way above their price point for quality, value drinkability.

2008 Cookoothama Cabernet Merlot Lovely plum aromas infused with hints of spice, herbs and dark chocolate. Stylish and structured palate of blackcurrant and mint with rich, silky tannins and well integrated oak. Fabulous with a good barbecue or Wagyu steak. RRP $14.95

2007 Cookoothama Botrytis Semillon A consistent award winner. The wine is a brilliant straw colour with a golden hue, showing enticing aromas of dried apricot and fig, combined with marmalade and orange peel.A wine offering the lucky drinker a luscious concentrated palate of apricot nectar, fig and pineapple. Yum - what more can I say! RRP $22.95

Who is Ant Moore... and more importantly, tell us about his wines... As a budding Australian entrepreneur, following stints winemaking in regions as diverse as Oregon in the USA and Orange in NSW, Moore found home in New Zealand making wine at well known Isabel Estate. He later purchased land in the Waihopai Valley, Marlborough and launched wine labels including Catalina Sounds and Crowded House. But this wasn’t enough. In 2009 Ant Moore once again leapt onto the wine scene, by announcing his acquisition of the former Central Otago Vintners making him one of the largest Pinot Noir producers in Central Otago. The official launch of Ant Moore wines in Australia this month will be a celebration of a culmination of years of hard work, determination and grit. Ant Moore is one to watch – he doesn’t do things in half measures. The quality, style and personality in this 2009 Ant Moore Marlborough Pinot Gris gives a taste of what’s to come and totally reflects that of its namesake; smart, cheeky and streets

ahead of the rest. Already adorned with a Blue Gold from the 2010 Sydney International Top 100, Ant is hoping for great things from this wine, which is the first vintage of his estate grown Pinot Gris. Quite a departure from the Marlborough norm, all Ant Moore’s wines are produced from his high altitude, low yielding vineyards. The harsh climates and clay based soils naturally restrict vigour giving better flavour profiles between the fine fruit flavours from the Marlborough sunshine and acid from the cooler star-filled nights. The wines are complex yet restrained with layers of flavour and surprises on the palate. Ant’s philosophy is to make varietal wines that truly reflect the region and also creates a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Nelson Riesling and a Central Otago Pinot Noir. Robert Oatley Vineyards... East meets West in groundbreaking new Mudgee-made wines. Whilst Bob Oatley's winemaking mission, "to make the highest quality wine at the best possible price" hasn't changed over the years, his marketing strategy has. Bob was convinced by his family and friends in the industry to name his prestige wine range after himself - Robert Oatley. Wherever he makes wine, Bob Oatley's underlying philosophy is to find the right vineyard with the right soil and match it to the right variety.

Vineyard Estate ‘Isabella Reserve’ Riesling 2009 With an incredible pedigree for Riesling production in his chosen district of Canberra, Graeme Shaw modestly attributes much of his success to the region, with its chilly nights and warm days, and the ideal growing conditions at the site. Canberra’s cool nights assist the vines in retaining acidity, while the warm days create aromatic wines, tightly focused yet with delicate varietal purity - evident here in the Shaw Vineyard Estate ‘Isabella Reserve’ Riesling. RRP $28 climate - making it a perfect fit for Australia. This red is fuller flavoured than a pinot noir but not as heavy as a shiraz. Its medium bodied nature, delicious cherry fruit and hints of spice make it a perfect wine for our outdoor lifestyle. RRP $18.99

Fall in love with Big Helga – just like we did all those years ago... Strong-bodied, well-rounded and full of character, a nod to the Munich Oktoberfest lagers, Big Helga is Matilda Bay’s newest brew in an on-going journey of discovery and exploration of the world’s greatest beer styles. She made her debut in October 2009 (no surprises there) - at some of the best bars across Australia. The story of Big Helga begins with a Matilda Bay brewer who took a break, went in search of inspiration - and found it in Munich at Oktoberfest, where he fell in love with a lofty blonde beer maid named Helga. . . well that’s the story he told us on his return. Helga, he said, through misty eyes and with a croaky voice, could carry 12 steins of beer while his mates struggled with two. Helga was large - certainly, but she had a heart of pure Munich gold. Helga, he reminisced, should come to Australia one day and meet his parents . She never came. So he made a beer in her honour instead. Big Helga is brewed with malted barley and noble hops. It is kettle-hopped and after being lovingly nurtured during fermentation, it is then dry-hopped producing a fruity and fresh aromatic lager. Big Helga is perfectly suited to BBQ gourmet sausages (German of course) but she also loves curries, tapas, the occasional Thai salad and has even been known to go off with some Mexican . . . she is nothing if not versatile. Here’s to you Big Helga – welcome to Australia.

Perfect for any age and any occasion, simply serve over ice, mix into cocktails, coffee, chocolate, or use as a ‘naughty’ ingredient in decadent dishes. Aphrodope Elixir makes a distinctive and deliciously wicked gift, and a great conversation starter at any party. Jewel in the crown of any bar, the delicious Aphrodope is available in 500ml and 50ml an absolute must-have liqueur that is the colour of love. Love in a bottle. http://www.aphrodope.com

INSPIRED BY CELLAR DOORS IN THE MARGARET RIVER AND THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA, TONY THOMPSON AND SHARON HOGAN DECIDED TO CREATE A FOODIE’S PARADISE IN MONTVILLE. ith its 100 acres of rich red volcanic soil, acres of vines, vibrant Flame trees historic timber homestead and ocean views to Mooloolaba, Flame Hill Vineyard is quintessentially Queensland. The picturesque property sits 420 metres above sea level at Montville’s highest point Initial ‘flames of the heart’ were ignited in 2006 when Sharon Hogan met Tony Thompson in a Buderim cafe. “He had a great looking cattle dog on the back of his truck and I thought he was a country tradie but little did I know his passions were wine and art,” a smiling Sharon explains and the rest as they say is history. “Tony had been looking for a property for many years which could produce quality grapes, was close to the coast and easily accessible for tourists. In 2007 he was looking for a location for our wedding and knocked on the Settlers Rise door to be told that they didn’t do weddings but he could buy the place if he wanted. So this was the joke at our wedding that it was a very expensive affair.” After the established 10 year old vineyard and cellar door had undergone a complete renovation including a five year incubation and development of the first wine range, the Flame Hill Vineyard Cellar Door and Restaurant opened in December 2008

menu features five simple but well crafted dishes such as prawn and avocado salad with passionfruit vinaigrette; scallop ravioli with Asianinfused crustacean emulsion

“I still find this property breathtaking every time I come up the drive over the cattle grids and look at the vines and the ocean below,” says Sharon who acknowledges that amongst the challenges, the biggest one was obtaining the restaurant licence. “The cost and patience to negotiate this through council was really draining, however we are so happy with the outcome and booked out most week ends. Locals are really embracing our wine and the great food. This is really what we wanted to showcase - the best this region has to offer.” The vineyard is so named because of the abundance of red surrounding the vineyard and more specifically the red volcanic Cambrian soil and the Flame Tree (brachychiton acerifolius), a well known rain forest tree prevalent in the Blackall Range Area. This tree produces bright red bell shaped flowers from October to November and can be found in the gardens just outside the cellar door and nearby rainforest. The red earth, elevated location and Flame Tree are captured in the logo and wine label, Flame Hill Vineyard. Angus/ Santa cross cattle and guinea fowl are also bred and the property is a catchment area for several permanent waterways including Skene’s Creek and plans are under way to revegetate significant sections, improve water quality and enhance wildlife corridors. “Wines include a unique range of Queensland wine made from grapes sourced from the Montville vineyard and other contract grape growers in south-east Queensland,” explains Sharon. The cooler climate is highly suitable for grape production, verdelho, shiraz, and cabernet vines were planted in 1998 and the Thompsons engage preferred contract wine makers to produce wines to their specified style and palate. The 2008/2009 range includes four whites, three reds and two fortifieds. The paddock to plate concept is imperative to Flamehill, with French chef Patrick Bender creating menus and wine matches using local produce sourced from the property and locally. The menu features five simple but well crafted dishes such as prawn and avocado salad with passionfruit vinaigrette; scallop ravioli with Asianinfused crustacean emulsion; and entrecôte with butter Marchand de Vin. Tony, who hails from the Southern Downs and has an agri-business and plans to develop more produce on the property to advance his passion for ‘terroir’ and in the meantime wine and food aficionados are blessed to have a cellar door and restaurant of such high calibre at their doorstop.

For spa-goers looking for alternatives to more invasive treatments, there’s Botox, IPLs, lasers, microdermabrasion and so much more. The increase in the number of these non-invasive services has subsequently lowered prices and contributed to their popularity. ita Taylor’s exotic looks, attributed to an Indian Punjabi mother and an Irish/Norwegian father whom she never met, have always kept her in the spotlight. At eight she was a face for Smarties, then Lego and at 16, the English-born beauty moved to London to model for Marie Helvin who was at that time married to David Bailey, the famous fashion photographer. For five years she strutted the catwalk showing off fake fur coats and jackets for her employer Glenn Models and assisted her mother Cheetah Beamiss, an antique dealer, who specialised in the Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods. Clients included the late Princess Margaret, Elliot Gould, Omar Sharif and Elton John. She lived in Israel for several years and in the late 90s she was involved in a Jazz Club in Hong Kong with former husband Richard Halstead, who received a special talent visa, which gave them entry into Australia, where they opened a Blues club called The Healer in Fortitude Valley. After they moved to Noosa with son James in 2000, Nita set about achieving her goal of becoming a motivational fitness coach with added elements such as Boxercise, which she uses to motivate women in the full spectrum of fitness and wellbeing. Five years ago she set up Energy to You, programs which she describes as being not just about weight loss, physical strength and body sculpting: “I also give an added sense of confidence, worth, achievement and personal empowerment. I am just the trigger to begin that journey.” But targeting women was the tip of the iceberg. “Despite the beautiful beaches and hinterland, local young people struggle to gain access to affordable opportunities, positively explore and define themselves as individuals in their local community,” explains Nita who has teamed up with Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership and Drink Safe Coalition to provide Boxercise workshops for12-25 year olds, as part of the Drink Safe No Regrets holiday program.“This aims to support a safe drinking culture and nurture them to positively express themselves. Our young people deserve support on many issues such as binge drinking as many fall into a negative path, feeling they are not being heard or listened to. “Boxercise provides the trigger to releasing stress, anger and frustration and gain clarity, purpose, greater self-worth, increased selfconfidence and help them discover how gifted and amazing they really are. “Currently I conduct two Boxercise classes in Noosaville and in addition Boxercise training can also be conducted at anyone’s home, in the local park, on the beach, as a one-on-one or with a friend. There’s also a What's On Your Mind group forum, a down-to-earth way for youth and women to be heard. I have also used this in conjunction with Boxercise and it works. “My overall aim is to expand and help as many youths and women as I can and increase Boxercise classes in after school activities programs or in

school time as part of the sport’s program. At the moment there are 19 schools on board across the coast. “Our youth need to be heard, listened to and given assistance. I’m told I have a gift which makes them feel comfortable speaking out. I use the word nurture many times as to me it means to support in a gentle compassionate way.” Non-stop Nita would love to travel around Australia gaining awareness for her programs as well as continue her spiritual readings in the Peregian Beach home she shares with landscaper husband Stephen, his son Max, aged16 and her son James, aged 12, who both attend Sunshine Beach High and get on famously. “Spiritual readings are like fine tuning a radio,” the ethereal Nita, who is equally passionate about her emotional side, says. “A reading is similar to joining a friend for a cuppa and leaving empowered with a sense of connection to one’s soul, which is often forgotten and replaced with personality and ego.” Nita feels she is blessed to be surrounded by courageous and beautiful people: “I am very supported and loved in everything I do. Even when I have melt down days it’s wonderful to know I can just pick up the phone. This makes me feel great right down to the soul.”

A thirst for Okanui

Okanui founder Dick Ash

f you thought the office water cooler was popular, check out the four-footer’s favourite cooler in Hastings Street, outside Okanui’s new location at Bay Village. Amongst the thirsty locals who woof in agreement around the Michael Pugh-designed bowl are Cindy, Lani, Roxy, Zowie the skate boarder, Yang who has a yen for good tucker, Gypsy a leggy, quiet girl and Reef a handsome fluff-ball. Inside meanwhile, shoppers are immediately transported to the South Sea Islands with classic Okanui and extra length beachcomber shorts, beach pants, island, plain and T Shirts, sarongs, canvas travel bags, Panama hats, jewellery, plus resort wear label, Fridays Paradise, a quality range of colourful linen. It’s been 10 years since Okanui opened on Hastings Street and several decades since founder Dick Ash pulled out his mother’s old Singer sewing machine and made canvas board shorts. Today Okanui has a definite feeling of the islands, the colourful designs are recognized all over the world and the future is definitely bright.

ATTACK YOUR GOALS HEAD ON, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER TO LAUGH AT YOURSELF AND HAVE SOME FUN.

Falling off a thirty metre cliff, doctors said Stephen Dale should have been fatally injured but…after a week in a coma, a year in different hospitals and 10 years rehabilitating, he survived. ollowing in the footsteps of sporting heroes Alan Border and Wally Lewis, playing State of Origin and in the Ashes series, should have been a walk in the park for Stephen Dale, however his dreams were shattered in 1989. On Phillip Island, 21 year-old Stephen was drinking with a few guys he’s known for less than two weeks when his daredevil instinct took over. “I decided to climb Pyramid Rock despite the obvious danger,” recalls Stephen who was born in Brisbane, deferred teacher’s college, headed to Melbourne, worked as barman and admits to a life of stupid risk-taking, showing off, always trying to prove himself and not respecting authority or rules. “The cliff was wet from ocean spray, I had no experience or safety gear, was wearing tread-less sneakers and was drunk. “I talked one mate into climbing with me, the other took the safe path to the top. Sliding down the loose gravel I ‘launched’ off the cliff-face onto the rock below.” He learned later that while the two friends administered CPR for approx 30 to 45 minutes, he suffered multiple heart attacks and lost a large amount of blood. The trio were spotted by passers-by and had a walkie-talkie. With a multifractured spine, dislocated hips, major head and face injuries, blood and skin loss, internal organ damage Stephen was air-lifted to Alfred Hospital and remained in a coma for five days. “Serious head, spinal and nervous system injuries led to severe pain, confusion, fear, panic, depression and I had to fight day by day to keep myself going…simply surviving the moment. I developed an attitude of ‘willingness’ to do whatever it took for as long as it took for me to recover.” Support from family was unending as Stephen was given basic tasks by therapists such as speaking and memory training however his inability to tell reality from hallucinations, angry, snoring, farting patients around him and negative and condescending doctors, severely

overwhelmed with how lost and dependant I was. Using my own initiative, I had to figure out ways to learn to read, write, speak, understand life, how to build relationships and get some form of employment to be independent.” He searched for inspiration and found solace and strength in many including his grandfather who had suffered in the second world war; his sister Kathy’s generosity and perseverance; his mother Gloria and father Rodney who had their own health issues but were always happy, patient and contributed to the lives of others; sporting heroes such as Wally Lewis, Alan Border and Pat Rafter; the unemployed at Centrelink, whose lack of willingness and lethargy enabled him to sharpen his own levels; plus watching the physically or mentally disabled, who were still living their lives. After reading Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” Stephen felt socially more adept at speaking, especially to women, and decided to turn his life around, Back on his own two feet and speaking at the International Coaching Federation function, Stephen’s audience including waiters and kitchen staff, was awestruck. “After the lunch a long line of people headed to my table and asked me to speak to their teams and how much I charged. I thought they were geeing me up. Who would pay me to talk about a bloody and gory accident? A surreal experience, but after that day I knew I had a career.” Other memorable moments included taking a speed reading course eight years after the accident and recording 1200 words per minute with a comprehension rate of 80 per cent; a full day abseiling at Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point cliffs, with a harness; meeting Allison Lester, the Sheraton’s spa manager who will become his wife in several months; and launching his book, CD and DVD through his website www.smilingtiger.com.au Stephen, who lives at Peregian Beach is a football tragic, very serious about health and fitness and enjoys body-surfing. His business name is Smiling Tiger, which he says is not just his nickname but sums up his attitude to life and business: “Attack your goals head on, but always remember to laugh at yourself and have some fun.” And the moral to his story? “Your level of willingness determines your level of success.” Difficult to believe this tall, buffed, incredibly fit personal trainer and inspirational speaker fell thirty metres off a cliff. Writer: Helen Flanagan

Hitting rock bottom and surviving

Image of the site: Taken by Stephen’s father with captions written by one of his two saviours tested his patience. He decided to go cold turkey with the hospital’s drugs. “I was laying 24/7 on a spine that has just been physically fused back into position and had a multifractured skull, so going off drugs was very hard. They tied me down and my broken brain translated the extreme pain into flame and my hallucination was that I was on fire. My choice was to give in and die or fight for my life, get out of the hospital and create a fantastic life. But the harder I worked - especially when every cell in my body screamed out for me to quit – the more I realised I could endure and I could bounce back.” And he did with a vengeance. “When I left hospital and finished official rehab, I was incredibly relieved to be at home, but completely

Absolutely mesmer-eyesing Sunglasses have come a long way since frilly frames and plain wayfarers. tyle and shape is one consideration, however it’s colour that’s most identifiable when it comes to being yesterday’s fashion accessory. Black sunglasses have always been popular but this year they’re back big-time, thanks to a fascination for vampires caused by the Twilight series. Red has had a resurgence with bolder, brighter artistic details. Obvious logos and white frames a-la Victoria Beckham are on the way out but oversized sunnies, aviators and mirror glasses are hanging in. Tortoiseshell remains a hit, champagne shades are catching-

Sunglasses are certainly for more than protecting your eyes against the sun

Kathryn Grant, from Noosa-based Savage Sunglasses who design and manufacture small batches of sunnies with reinforced frames and regulation standard UV protection lenses, says: “Jackie O was known for her amazing sense of style and grace, and Savages’ Jacky Oh range epitomises her look. The Dotti range has the same frame but with a fun retro look. “The cat’s -eye style has been given a fresh look; the kitten range has animal prints; there’s a rockabilly look for women of all ages; and for those who like a bit of bling, the Diamond range in black, red or blue means there’s a colour for every occasion.” For those lucky enough to be in the upper echelon, check out Tiffany and Bulgari who copy their jewellery designs onto the sides of their frames. And a limited edition design from Fendi has handplaced Swarovski crystals. That’s serious bling. Sunglasses are certainly for more than protecting your eyes against the sun especially if you want to stand out in the crowd.

Star on the rise Stephanie Brownlee describes herself as Taylor Swift mixed with Keith Urban and Miley Cyrus.

move over Miley... hen it comes to the real thing, Sunrise Beach’s Stephanie Brownlee has the it factor – the voice, looks and attitude aplenty according to Dennis Dunstan, who used to manage Fleetwood Mac for years and has set up Noosa-based Front Row Management with the 17 year-old Stephanie in his stable of talent. "I get CDs sent to me from all the world and couldn’t believe that my next client was going to come from my own area,” says Dennis who also manages Kevin Borich and admits to having held onto Stephanie’s CD for some time before listening to it in the car. “I had to pull over, the hairs on my arms stood up, I couldn’t believe she was only 14 and I knew I needed to meet this young girl. “I worked with her for a few years before signing her, had to see that she really wanted this career and that she didn't lose her great voice, but as I predicted, she just kept getting better.” She has already been to Nashville and recorded her debut album Keep it Real, which is fresh and fun, with the single of the same name, written by Liz Rose who wrote most of the songs on Taylor Swift’s Grammy award winning album. “It’s all about relationships, love and hate which a lot of people can relate to,” an excited Stephanie who was born and raised in Tamworth says. “Mum used to always listen to country and I'd be the one dancing in my pyjamas. Devoted mum Natasha helped her pursue a singing career: “Stephanie started singing around the house including singing with the vacuum cleaner and performing to ‘screaming fans’ in the shower, and I thought she’s was really not bad. "One of her friends was going to voice coaching so she started having lessons as well and was told she has a raw natural talent." Although Stephanie’s base is in country music, she loved to sing along with modern pop musicians like Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. Doing karaoke at the surf club made her feel less scary. These days though she just jumps on stage "I think there is a movement that is happening with all youth,” says Dennis who has an innate understanding of how singers such as Taylor Swift have opened a lot of doors and created a demand for more young modern country artists. “The crowd response to Stephanie backs this up and everyone I play her to is absolutely blown away.” Stephanie thought recording in Nashville was a cool experience. “I got to work with such professional musicians,” she says in a bubbly tone. “The guys who

played on the album were amazing session players who’ve worked with huge artists, so that was really cool. We did the backing tracks in Nashville and the vocals in Sydney. “The album comes out on 1 May and we'll be touring around Australia to support that, and while we're working on my career in Australia we’re also going to be working at America. So hopefully we'll make it big enough in Australia so I have a fan base then I try over there.” In the meantime as a country, rock, pop artist, she’ll draw inspiration from life and keep writing songs. “About everything. Boys definitely. Bitchy girls. You name it. I just have to be in the mood to write however it's so much easier to write heartbreak songs than happy songs because there’s so much more emotion. What I do is just pick up my guitar and play any random chords, anything that sounds nice together and then sort of sing along with it.” According to Dennis, Stephanie who fancies singing a duet with Keith Urban, has a big future: "She loves country but she also loves the influences of all the modern pop and the R&B music kids enjoy today. I think she has got her own twist on it. I know she is all of the great things that modern country music has to offer.” No doubt he also hopes she has as much success as the other Stephanie in his life, Stevie Nicks.

beautiful Italian shoes

collectors....

Riding the wave hether squirrel, magpie or hoarder, they all come under the guise of passionate albeit eccentric collectors who have sheds filled with old cars, bicycles, tools, jam jars and pottery; houses chock-a-block with airline sick bags, belly button fluff, fountain pens, porcelain, antique furniture and plastic what-nots in all shapes and colours; or in Darryl Homan’s case, a collection of surfboards, books, mags and bric-a-brac from around the surfing world. Mackay-born Darryl Homan was a 14 year-old grommet when he first came to Noosa with a mate plus an older surfer and his wife. He slept under caravans in The Woods and surfed all day. His passion for surfing memorabilia began around that time but took off seriously 15 years ago.

W

What did the obsession start with? I was fourteen when I bought surf magazines and my first real board, a 9’6” Pacific Star by Dunlop for the princely sum of $5. In those days it took me four weeks to save $5. I couldn’t afford to keep the board, however kept the magazines and of course the board shorts.

Where do you find your treasures and name some of your faves? In the early days I scoured second hand shops and later garage sales, ran ads in the local paper and trading post, then E-Bay opened up a world wide net. Fortunately with a network of friends everywhere, after I’ve purchased those special pieces, they store them for me until I find a way of bringing them home. My big-time favourites are a Hayden longboard, a 1967 mini gun from Hawaii shaped by Phil Edwards and a beautiful 7’ swallow tail gun by Garey Lopez, which only recently arrived from San Francisco thanks to a friend who brought it with him.

How big is your collection and what are you on the hunt for?

If you count the magazines, papers, posters, boards and associated bit and pieces, the total would be in the thousands. I could never part with a paisley cloth print Woosley from 1967 which has Yolanda, my late mother’s name on the deck. I have a serious passion for Queensland boards and particularly Haydens from the 60s and Joe Larkin from the 70s. That was a great experimental era in

board design, travel, soul surfing, country living etc. Joe, still a good mate, semi-sponsored me in the late 60s and early 70s. I’m always searching for unusual boards and shapes with a story behind them. Recently the council organised a Surfing the Sixties exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery and I supplied a lot of boards. Some said it was the most popular exhibition ever, so just shows how keen the surfing community is.

Where do you live and surf today? I’m a builder by trade and built my first home at Marcus Beach in 1977. To this day, Noosa is one of the special spots on the planet, thanks to a lot of hard work by many locals who have resisted the worst of so called development. My partner Leonie (who deserves a big thank you for putting up with my collecting habits), and I live in Peregian Beach, a great community. We have four children between us. Leonie’s Sarah and Amie are beach lovers and my Dion and Tara surf. Dion and his wife Kristy are expecting their first child so exciting times ahead. I wonder if the little one will surf. My brother Ross, our friend Laurie and I have a home in south-west Sri Lanka and an extended family that looks after it. Following the father’s death in the tsunami, we now have two ‘grandkids’ who we visit most years and help support. There’s also a great surf.

What’s your involvement with the Noosa Malibu Club and the Noosa Festival of Surfing? I am a life member, past club president and started the original memorabilia auction. Club donations and proceeds from the auction go to many worthwhile causes every year. Thanks to the club and my friend Phil Jarratt and his team, this year’s festival should be big – the best in the world. Not bad for a little town like Noosa. And let’s not forget the Noosa Malibu Club produced three world champions: Chris DAboitz and Meredith Saunders in tandem surfing; Josh Constable, the world longboard champion; and Julian Wilson, the world junior surfing champion. Not bad for a little club started by a few longboarders with a dream

Free spirited sun w It’s the decorative touches albeit eclectic that give a home in Eumundi personality. ith two young daughters who were into horse riding, holidays at Lake Macdonald were more than a welcome relief for English-born Phillippa Watson and Australian husband Mark Pitman who lived on Lantau Island amongst the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. That was until Elly 13, broke her arm. At this juncture the decision was made to move to Australia permanently. The hunt was on and ten days later a single-level home on four hectares with a dam and a tennis court in Eumundi was theirs.

Inspired by travels throughout Asia and Europe, Phillippa explains many ideas for the renovation were influenced by places they’d experienced on their visits and she worked closely with builder Glenn Duncan. The pool, which went on to win a major award for Jordan Pools was the first step and it really belies its rural setting being raised with a trough around to allow for wet-edging, is finished with grey mosaics and slate and fringed in part by palm trees. and children’s bedrooms with bathrooms were added, with functional yet fun elements such as candy stripe Osborne & Little wallpaper. The main bedroom is enveloped in mitered glass, has Belgium linen Gliss blinds and features a large timber chest from Sumatra. The huge ottoman at the foot of the bed and floor-to-ceiling bedhead upholstered in plush velvet were designed by Warren Naylor from Add+ Noosa, who Phillippa met when she purchased outdoor furniture from him nearly three years ago. She now refers to him as a good friend. Phillippa, a former executive specialising in the spa industry for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, says she was completely at home designing the bathrooms: “I wanted opulence and helped by words of wisdom from Warren, used grey cement-look tiles on the floor and walls, softened it with pillars of Bisazza mother of pearl mosaics in shades of pink and purple which changes in different lights. “I love the Villeroy & Boch Aveo bath. It looks over to Mt Cooroy and is used every day. Above it sits a ‘loofah’ light which I bought in Hong Kong and is made from acrylic tubes.” Phillippa and Mark shipped two 60-foot containers filled with artwork and furniture from Hong Kong and much has been used including couches, a corian and stainless steel coffee table, cowhide ottoman, lacquered camphor boxes and eight massive Chinese screens. In the media room, a floral oriental-look wallpaper has a matt black

base with a silver fleck, is from English company Osborne & Little and is typical of Phillippa’s appreciation for the modern yet eclectic aesthetic and although “everything is big, we don’t like clutter and minimalistic”. Artwork from Vietnam accents the travertine fire place; abstract French art is in the kid’s rooms; and art from Russia in the main bedroom all complement the proportions of the rooms.” Warren Naylor’s expertise extended to adding furniture such as sofas, tables and water features plus bespoke pieces including a distressed bronze-look screen. This adds privacy to the front entrance which is ‘dressed’ by huge urns al fresco. Phillippa says she is thrilled with the results and she, Mark, Elly, Annabel, the two Labradoodles and the Spoodle never want to leave.

A prestigious new beachfront development on Hastings Street is offering buyers a unique opportunity to enjoy a new standard of luxury in Noosa.

O

ccupying 100 metres of prime beachfront, Firstlight Noosa will comprise 20 three and four-bedroom private residences, offering around-the-clock boutique resort style amenities and services. Director of Firstlight International, Joe Buchanan, said Firstlight Noosa was attracting a strong level of interest from both local and interstate buyers looking to purchase their second home. “Firstlight Noosa will introduce a level of international luxury to Queensland which hasn’t been seen outside of some of the world’s most coveted destinations, such as Aspen,” he said.

Luxurious new development offers a rare slice of Noosa beachfront “Put simply, we are setting a whole new benchmark for luxury home ownership in Australia.” Combining the talents of Arkhefield architects and Pike Withers interior designers, it is the first project on Hastings Street to receive approval from the Noosa Iconic Panel and will combine world-class design with unparalleled service. However where most beachfront properties price all but the wealthiest buyers out of the market, Firstlight Noosa’s unique co-ownership model is designed to make this level of luxury accessible to more people. “Co-ownership gives buyers the opportunity to own an architecturally-designed, fully-serviced luxurious private residence, at the price point of a second residence,” Mr Buchanan said. Under the co-ownership model, owners purchase a freehold title in a particular residence. They then have access to use any residence of the same type, providing greater flexibility and availability. A strict no-rental policy ensures that residences are available exclusively for the use of owners and invited guests. Having multiple owners also ensures the private residences are occupied year-round, which adds to the vibrancy of the landmark Hastings Street precinct. Mr Buchanan said growing understanding of the coownership model has resulted in a high level of buyer excitement and interest since the project’s sales campaign commenced in February. “This is the future of luxury property ownership. We are giving buyers a new way to own a slice of Noosa beachfront, without the astronomical price tag,” he said. Mr Buchanan said a limited number of co-ownership freehold titles remain for sale at Firstlight Noosa, currently

priced at $1.8 million for three-bedroom residences, and $2.3 million for four-bedroom residences. A small number of residences are being offered for outright purchase between $12 million and $15 million. Firstlight Noosa residences will be fully serviced to the highest standards. Acclaimed Japanese architect, Toyo Ito bringing poetic design to the bathroom.... Renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito has joined forces with renowned bathware company Paco Jaanson to create a stunningly conceptual bathroom collection. Hailed as one of the world's most innovative and influential architects, Toyo Ito’s design philosophy centralises upon the idea of fusing the physical and virtual worlds into functional and lively space. Wanting to depart from conventional meaning, Toyo Ito’s bathroom collection for Paco Jaanson cleverly uses “flowing water” as the conceptual jumping off point. Toyo Ito (as the collection in aptly named) manifests movements of flowing water and the ensuing shapes found in the natural world, in to the collection. The vanity and basin use smooth, water worn shapes reminiscent of sand by the sea. The Corian surface has a sharp, defined edge near the outlet which fades away on the sloping side. The soap rest is a simple circle as if a single drop of rain had fallen. The basin mixer is a twisting looping form that arches over the basin as gracefully as a bird. lee brennen... creating a brand.

Every now and then a new talent emerges with an obvious passion for his craft. n a society of disposable commodities it is refreshing to see a young craftsman with a unique blend of creative style and respect for tradition. With the use of recycled hardwood from old buildings and derelict barns, canvases, oils and spray cans, Lee Brennan is capturing this in his furniture and art. Growing up on a farm in the hinterland of Noosa, Lee has spent his formative years surrounded by the life he portrays. With a family passionate about the arts it has been a natural progression to follow the path he has chosen. In Lee's words: "As humans we seem to possess an unquenchable hunger to progress for better or worse. With a desire to calm the machine that drives us I hope my use of recycled articles will offer, however minimal, a push in the right direction. Inspired by the honesty of natural materials and the layers of many landscapes framed in my mind." A skilled craftsman, Lee has a dual apprenticeship in building and joinery but since returning home from overseas his true talent is emerging. The major influences on his style have emerged from his extensive travels throughout Europe, Canada and the United States over the past two years, particularly the Great South West and the mountain regions.

Striking beauty in the bathroom At the 2009 Australian International Design Awards, which set a global benchmark for quality in manufactured goods, Methven’s Tahi Shower System was the winner in the housing and building sector. The Satinjet technology is a totally new way of using much less water in the shower and enjoying it more. It performs and feels very differently to all other showers, plus you can see the difference. Twin jets of water are propelled to collide, fracturing the surface tension and creating 3,000 droplets per second of Satinjet spray. Tahi hand showers also feature a rejuvenating massage spray which provides the ultimate shower experience. The Tahi Shower System is available from Reece stores nationally.

Her Majesty the King by Patricia O’Neill (New Holland $29.95) The first in a trilogy of works, this is the story based on Hatshepsut, gifted and beautiful daughter of the Pharaoh, who vows to accept whatever destiny the gods have decreed. When just 14, she kills a marauder, is betrothed to her loathsome brother and becomes the most powerful priestess in Egypt. She falls in love with Senenmut, the commoner who is torn between his yearning for Hatshepsut and his duty to protect her. When her father dies, she must make the ultimate sacrifice. Using painstakingly thorough research, O’Neill recounts one of history’s greatest untold love stories, chronicling Hatshepsut’s turbulent rise to power battling bigotry, heartbreak and betrayal in the glittering but treacherous world.

My Mate Steve Irwin by Tony Below the Styx by Michael Frisby & Julie Gatehouse Meehan (Longueville Books $29.95) This is a heartfelt memoir and boy's own adventure story with neverseen-before images about growing up with Steve Irwin, by one of his mates, Tony Frisby: “I don't quite know how it all happened. One moment I was laughing with my teenage surfing buddy Stevo as he got hammered by the suckiest waves on the Sunshine Coast, the next I was grinning next to him in my best man's suit at his wedding in Oregon. “We would go camping, hang out at the beach and his family's wildlife park, play sport, and act like silly buggers. Then our friendship deepened as we trusted each other with our lives catching wild crocs in remote Queensland.”

(Allen & Unwin $29.99) Martin Frobisher a successful publisher and community leader, is in the City Remand Centre, awaiting trial for murder. What shadow has fallen across the comfortable lives of Frobisher, his ambitious wife Coralie and her flaky sister Madeleine? What has led a cultivated and reflective man, known to shoo spiders and earwigs out of the harm's way, to such reckless acts of violence? With the prospect of imprisonment for the Term of his Natural Life, can Frobisher and his research assistant Petra find guidance in the life and fortunes of a brilliant young Englishman, marooned in Australia, 'the land of vulgarity and mob rule'. Fiendishly clever, wickedly funny, intriguing, constantly surprising and a journey like no other.

Everybody's Fine

Alone after the death of his wife, and retired from his manual job in a wire factory, Frank Goode (de Niro), comes to the realisation that he is not in any way connected to his children. Although advised by his doctor not to take any long trips due to his poor health, Frank decides that he will set out across America in a pilgrimage to surprise all of his children and find out for himself who they have become. Frank's first stop is New York City to spend time with his artist son David. But after sitting on his doorstep for some time the closest he gets to locating him is sighting his art work on display at a nearby gallery. Next is Amy (Kate Beckinsale), a successful advertising consultant in Chicago. Almost immediately on Frank’s arrival, it is clear that tensions are high between Amy’s husband and son. Although successful, an embarrassing coldness has entered her life making it uncomfortable to have her father there. Bohemian sensual drama La Ronde 10 scenes. 10 characters. 10 sexual encounters. oosa Arts Theatre brings to the Sunshine Coast, a sensual, seductive and scandalous Adults Only production of the classic play, La Ronde.

N

A grungy period piece, La Ronde was written in the early 1900’s by an Austrian doctor, to educate Viennese society about the spread of venereal diseases in particular syphilis. The characters, from all levels of society, explore a series of sexual encounters between 10 different couples. Director of this sensual, seductive and scandalous adults only production, Sam Coward, (who most recently directed SHOUT! The Legend of the Wild One at Caloundra Events Centre), says “La Ronde is just as current, and as relevant an insight into class structure and society’s attitudes towards sex as it has always been.” “La Ronde is about sex - the expectations, the preconceptions, the misconceptions – and it is not always nice. Audiences will experience beauty but they will also cringe at the grittier, uglier aspects of sex that we don’t tend to talk about.” La Ronde, stars an exceptional cast, who are being pushed to explore

their boundaries in this exciting play. La Ronde, with an accomplished local cast that includes Tim Murfin, Stephen Moore, Carly Partridge, Mary Eggleston, Xanthe Coward, Shane Ross, Sharon Grimley, Kay Ellsum, Meg Monroe and Nathan Hynes, is bound to get audiences talking. In various states of undress, the characters dance through a series of sexual encounters, of which we see just ten in succession, without an interval. La Ronde is dark and delicious new theatre featuring a superb soundscape by Cooroy’s Internationally recognised Sound Designer Leah Barclay. It is R-Rated and a little risqué and it opens at Noosa Arts Theatre on March 25th. Admire Rare Treasures in Buderim uring Autumn the pretty village of Buderim will play host to beautiful and rare paintings by Master Australian artists at Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery, the local gallery specialising in Fine Investment Art and works by Norman Lindsay. One of the stand out pieces art buffs will be sure to enjoy is a magnificent large watercolour by Albert Namatjira (1909-1959) featuring Mount Gillen in the ruggedly beautiful landscape of Central Australia. Gallery director, Tiffany Jones said: “This amazing watercolour is more than double the usual size of an Albert Namatjira painting. It’s impressive size not only makes it a rarity, but also very collectable. It is well worth a visit to our gallery to have the chance to see this one in a million painting.” “Also worth a visit is the opportunity to see a gorgeous oil entitled “Rita with Veil” by Norman Lindsay,” Tiffany said.“Rita was regarded by Norman Lindsay as his “perfect model” and her mixed Spanish and Chinese heritage accounted for her exotic appearance and regal aura, which is portrayed beautifully in this very collectable oil painting,” she said. To mark the occasion of the recently released film entitled “Banjo Paterson with a Paintbrush” the gallery is currently presenting a selection of oil paintings by the talented artist Hugh Sawrey, who is the subject of the new 52 minute film created by Broadoak Productions. “The Damper Maker”, a magnificent major work by Sawrey valued at close to $40,000, which is shown in the film is now on view at Tiffany Jones Fine Art. Born on the Sunshine Coast in Buderim in 1923, Sawrey went on to become one of Australia’s most collectable painters leaving a legacy of paintings that depict the life and history of outback people. As well as the oil paintings by Sawrey, Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery will also have available DVD’s of the recently released film on Sawrey’s life. Other collectable oils by Robert Dickerson, David Boyd, Margaret Olley, Tim Storrier, Jason Benjamin and Pro Hart are also on offer together with more sensual etchings and pencil drawings by Norman Lindsay. A range of fun and contemporary pieces by Kate Smith, Denise Daffara, Antje Collis and Rachel Carmichael are showing now. At the end of June new pastels by Kate Smith that evoke the glamour and elegance of the women in the Jazz Age will be unveiled in Buderim at Kate’s aptly titled 2010 exhibition “Jazza-belles”. She has also developed a discerning eye for quality and design. Whether for business or pleasure, Gillian researches her accommodation for something that stands out from the rest. "What I've noticed is the lack of vibrancy in the interior design of many accommodation properties. They fail to offer the guest an 'experience' in atmosphere. It might be 'magazine' perfect but it's the personal touches that can make a huge difference". The intimacy that comes from displaying original artwork can make your holiday rental stand out from the rest. Traveling to Asia, you notice the unique style that is often expressed in the furnishings and decoration. In Australia we should be embracing our heritage and putting it on show for our visitors. Your accommodation property can stand out from the crowd simply by choosing a few pieces of Aboriginal artwork, reflecting the depth of Australia's indigenous culture and instilling some of your own personality. Each unique piece of art comes directly from 100% owned and operated Aboriginal Art Centres in remote desert communities (Putipula proudly represents ten such art centres). The World's Only Formula One Night Race... 2010 Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix paradise wins... he Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix is the only Formula One pure night race and Asia’s only street race. The signature mix of lights, glamour, and non-stop action, returns to the heart of Singapore at the Marina Bay Street Circuit from September 24th to 26th, 2010. This year's event will also be easier to access, with the announcement of improved public transport. As a new incentive for early bookings, tickets are priced in phases - early bird specials which offer savings of up to 17%t until April 30th, and regular prices from May to race week. A three-day Zone 4 walkabout ticket for 24th-26th September will initially be offered at just SGD 168 (approximately $135.00 AUS). During the early bird phase, fans can enjoy 16% savings for the Pit Grandstand and Turns 1 and 2 Grandstands. TheStamford and Connaught Grandstands offer 11% and 14% savings respectively. In addition, a new three-day Premier Walkabout ticket will allow access to Zone 1, where fans can watch the action along Republic Boulevard where the cars approach the sweeping right-hander at Turn 5. To maximise viewing opportunities, Zone 1 will be equipped with specially designed bleachers. Premier Walkabout ticketholders will also

have access to the entertainment offerings in the rest of the Circuit Park. Access for all visitors to the Grand Prix event will be aided by three newly opened subway stations, which will service the major gates at the circuit park. There are now a total of five stations directly servicing the event, each offering convenient access to and from citycentre, or downtown hotels and nearby shopping and entertainment centres. What is unique about the Marina Bay Street Circuit is that cars race in speeds of about 300km/h along public roads in a bustling capital city at night. The circuit was developed in preference to a permanent out-of-town facility so that fans can enjoy the thrills and spills of a Grand Prix event up-close and right in the heart of the city. In contrast to the often isolated location of many Grand Prix venues, the Marina Bay Street Circuit is just a walking distance away from five-star accommodation, food and beverage options and entertainment centres. Of course, the most unique feature of the Singapore race is that it is the only pure night race on the FORMULA ONE calendar. The cars leave the starting grid at 8pm local time and race into the night, illuminated by over 1,500 specially designed projector lamps. Mounted low, to avoid disturbing the trees which lineSingapore’s streets, they combine with the balmy tropical evening.

thelast word...

Big Bob Abbot – Battle weary? Never. IN NOOSA STYLE MAGAZINE’S FIRST ISSUE MAYOR BOB ABBOT SAID “NOOSA IS A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE AND WE WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. WE ARE ALREADY AWARE THE MAXIMUM POPULATION THAT CAN BE SUSTAINED IN THE NOOSA SHIRE IS ABOUT 55,000...” A DECADE AND AN AMALGAMATION OF COUNCILS LATER, THE BATTLE CONTINUES. When did you arrive in Noosa, from where and what were your first impressions? I visited Noosa in the 1960s with my parents and moved to Cooran in the hinterland to start my own family in 1978. My first impression was of a small rural community - a place where I wanted to raise my kids. Why did you enter local government and what year did you become mayor? I come from a very community-minded family and we were always involved in clubs and community organisations such as pony clubs, fishing clubs and football clubs. Council was a natural extension of that. I was first elected in 1982 and became mayor in 1997. How challenging were those often controversial days of reshaping of Noosa and did you ever think the town might be loved to death? They were some of the most difficult days of my political career, but the intensity of the battle never changes, just the issues. If it wasn't for what happened then, we wouldn't have a Noosa Biosphere Reserve today would we? The 70s, 80s and 90s certainly laid the foundations for establishing the Noosa Biosphere organisation. Close to half the former shire is either State forest or National Park and will remain permanently protected. How different is Noosa today, what have been some of the more memorable moments/decisions, and It is a different Noosa today. When I was first elected there were 12,000 residents in the Shire. It was a small fishing village on the edge of a very large rural area. I think the most critical battles of the day were fought around the North Shore and Noosa River and successive planning schemes have continued to deliver significant protection for both the environment and the lifestyle. How did you feel when you were resoundingly elected mayor of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and what's it like going from being an electrician to constantly being in the spotlight or should that be limelight? When I was first elected Mayor, I felt an enormous sense of pride and responsibility and that continued with every successive year I have been in the job. The pressures and responsibility that come with being Mayor of the first Sunshine Coast Regional Council are more obvious. It is a very different job the bureaucracy is much larger, the culture is very different and the pressure

112 NoosaStyleLiving

from communities, business and other levels of government is constant and more intense. I knew it would be a big job and I put my hand up to do it – no one forced me to. It was a decision I didn’t take lightly but I received a lot of encouragement to stand and I did so knowing full well that it would be difficult and demanding. The job can be incredibly physically and emotionally draining but it is also very rewarding and the tough times only strengthen my resolve to work harder to achieve the best possible outcomes for our community. What is it about today's Noosa that you love so much? The same thing I have always loved – the river and lake system. These are critical arteries that keep the coastal region alive and the fact that we still have very vibrant rural communities in Noosa, unspoilt by overdevelopment, is an attraction in itself. I have the best of both worlds where I live – the Noosa Hinterland and the Noosa River. How do you relax? I love to take my little boat out on the lake and go fishing and crabbing with friends. Playing music is also a favourite pastime.

In Noosa Style 2000 it stated: “Before the new attitudes were translated into development law, Noosa suffered. People who visited the region during the 70s and 80s remember the campsite on the beach, the tatty shops and takeaway food outlets. This image of Noosa is now almost forgotten but serves as a warning to future generations who may confuse financial ambition with sustainable capabilities." Does that statement still hold the key to Noosa's future? And how do you see Noosa in 2020? I think Noosa is close to its carrying capacity now and there are no plans to change that. Due to the limits on development, I believe Noosa in 2020 will be not too dissimilar to Noosa in 2010, aside from some modernisation along the way. This year to celebrate a decade of publishing NOOSA Style, the lifestyle magazine for those who enjoy the good things in life, Last Word will feature other Noosaphiles who have made a difference.
