ince Boxing Day, when we all heard the tragic news of the house fire that took the lives of Matt Golinski’s wife and three beautiful daughters, the Hospitality industry has been rallying and offering

Hop into the Ginger Factory During the school holidays the Ginger Factory is staging some very special holiday activities to keep the littlies occupied and give parents a moment to sit back and relax over coffee at the Ginger Café. The line-up of holiday activities has been designed to bring out childrens’ creative sides. From April 2 to 5, the Ginger Factory’s own resident cooking school chef, will be showing kids how to make their own Easter-themed treats they can take home. The classes are suitable for children 8 years and over and run at 10am and 1.30pm daily costing $25 per child. An added bonus parents receive a complimentary coffee while watching their children create their delicious masterpieces. support to assist Matt in the painful and long journey ahead of him. Cameron Matthews of Spicers Clovelly Estate in Montville and Daniel Jarrett of Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny are both chefs and fathers, who both incidentally also have twins. Matt's plight has hit a chord with both men - from a personal level as well as a professional one. When something happens to “one of their own” the fraternity is quick to respond. Spicers will therefore spearhead the Hinterland’s efforts by hosting a fundraising lunch to be held at Spicers Clovelly Estate in Montville on Sunday the 22nd of April from 12.00pm. This will be a three-course lunch in their award-winning restaurant “The Long Apron”, with guests receiving a welcome drink upon arrival; live music and a silent auction to further raise funds. Tickets will be $75.00 per person and prepayment will be required. Please do not hesitate to make your booking as places will be limited by phoning 1300 272 897. Event organizer, Leanne Matthews, can be contacted on 0417 733 768 if interested members of the public or local businesses would like to offer support through donation of goods or services for the silent auction.

Welcome Kaylene Murray Editor

this issue FRANKEE-LEE IS SPECIAL... ON MY WAY FROM HEAVEN, GOD DELAYED MY TRIP THAT DAY. HE SAID THAT I WAS SPECIAL AND THEN SENT ME ON MY WAY. BUT NOT BEFORE HE KISSED ME, RIGHT UPON MY EARS. HE LEFT HIS BLESSED MARK TO CARRY WITH ME HERE. HE WHISPERED IN THEM RIGHT THEN, THAT HE LOVED ME WITHOUT DOUBT. AND THEN HE SEALED MY EARS UP TIGHT SO THE WHISPERS WON'T GET OUT.

orn on 16th July, 2009, Frankee-Lee Shaw seemed a picture of perfect health. At 6 months of age her family moved to Noosa and there, at 19 months-of-age, doctor's suggested she needed grommets (just like many other young children). But that is where it all went pear-shaped. In the operating theatre doctors found that little Frankee-Lee didn't have any ear canals or ear drums. Specialists later diagnosed Atresia a rare condition affecting only 1 in 10,000 children. Thus began a journey through Auditory-Verbal Therapy. Now luckily, Frankee-Lee has been chosen as an excellent candidate for reconstructive surgery by Dr Joseph Roberson in America. To help raise the $100,000.00 in funds needed for the epic journey to recovery Frankee-Lee and her family need your support. There will be a Fund-raising Auction at Tewantin RSL on Saturday 18th April @ 7pm, and everyone is invited to come along and bid. The family need to raise enough money to cover the two trips to America for the separate operations, which will take place 12 months apart and require a minimum of 3 weeks stay and living expenses each time. Welcome to our fabulous Autumn issue...

W

hat a weird year we are having. The weather is simply erratic and sometimes downright weird! Every night that I turn on the television to watch the news there is a new and unbelievable weather pattern or event somewhere. I know that we should be grateful for small mercies; and, I suppose we should be pleased that watering the garden is now taken care of by nature but really - enough is enough with the rain! We are so pleased that local chef and all-around good guy, Matt Golinski is finally on his long road to recovery. His beloved family were laid to rest recently, in a moving day of heartfelt grief mixed with joy for four lives lived with love, compassion and undeniable spirit. Live butterflies were released in the chapel symbolising Rachael and the girls’ free spirited nature, along with the girls’ love of ‘all things with wings’ including fairies, angels, dragonflies and butterflies Then white doves were released outside to symbolise eternal peace, love and healing. Chefs around Australia are holding Plates for Mates' dining events to raise funds to help Matt over the coming months and years of recovery. Please check with your local restaurant to see if you can become involved. This issue is full of wonderful new season ideas and things for you to do, see, taste, experience and savour. We introduce you to some of our talented and immensely interesting locals. including Caitlen Heaven who graduated from being a 'wild child'

high school dropout into a business dynamo proving that if you have the drive and imagination you can accomplish almost anything; we also catchup with Matthew Tanner who now follows the road less travelled and explains to us why in his opinion, a plain old chair is so much more; and we talk to Sean Tretheway, who details the journey his imagination has taken readers on - with his rollicking adventure tale - Beyond the Road. We also introduce you to tiny Frankee-Lee Shaw, who desperately needs your help to raise funds for her to travel to America for two operations over the next twelve months, that will see a world-class surgeon give her the gift of sound. This season heralds the start of the cooler months with boutiques showing their latest collections; interior designers and home decorators heralding a new beginning for your home makeover. Easter is a traditional renovation time for most men. We showcase a spectacular home and property on Noosa's North Shore; take a look at the AC GT Zagato a motoring masterpiece; and take you on a culinary journey around the local dining scene. Wild child Caitlen Heaven was a high school drop-out who, Helen Flanagan discovered, has prospered as a business supremo and mumpreneur. rom newsagencies, a drafting office, convenience stores and Tadpole Early Learning Centres to involvement with the family business of shopping centres and taverns in Brisbane, it’s fair to say that Caitlin and David Comiskey lead a busy life. And what a big change it’s been for little Miss Caitlin Heaven who left school in year 11 to pursue her dream of becoming a hairdresser, which literally she wasn’t cut out for. ‘Rescuing’ the 18 year-old from the doldrums of working in mundane positions was David who eventually popped the question on the boardwalk of Noosa’s Main Beach. “Unfortunately it was the day Lady Di died so that was all anyone talked about,” says Caitlin, the Piscean.“Even when we called our friends and family with our exciting news they screamed, congratulated us and then said “hey, did you hear about Lady Di? We were married in the Noosa National Park and would you believe a koala ran down our ‘flower aisle’. The reception was nearby at Cocos which looked like fairyland. It was the best week of my life.” Armed with a drafting degree, David opened an office with five draft persons and Caitlin was his “cranky night time” bookkeeper. He branched into commercial developments, obtained a building licence and started doing small developments with his father and brother. After opening a convenience store in one of David’s father’s shopping centres and selling it 18 months later, the couple bought two blocks of land nearby, just down the road from the store, adjacent to Narangba State School. There had been government changes in the child care industry and it was booming so they opened the first two Tadpoles in 2002, built 36 more, sold half off a few years ago and the rest last November. David and Caitlin who have three “gorgeous rat bag” boys Harry 10, Charlie 7 and Dash 4, always dreamed about moving to Noosa. “My parents had their honeymoon here in 1969 staying in one of the few hotels on Hastings Street; David’s parents built their house on the beach at Sunrise in 1991 so we were up here nearly every weekend; and when Harry was 18 months and I was pregnant with Charlie, we decided to bite the bullet. That was eight years ago. David still drives to Brisbane every weekday. He did say he could save about 14 hours a week by flying, so he studied hard, got his pilot’s licence for a helicopter, bought an R44 chopper and started flying.

continued from previous page... “After renting three different houses in Noosa Waters while looking for a place to buy, we realised we were way too loud for a normal house block and also needed a decent yard for the boys, so found a beautiful block with ocean views in Tinbeerwah. Dave, being a builder with an architectural background, teamed up with Ian Gordon from Stephen Kidd Designs on the plans for our beautiful home.” Caitlin is a totally hands-on mum but likes to spend every spare second on Dashbaby which she started about four years ago with close friend Michelle. The mothers of invention concluded that attractive travel wipe containers were non-existent, yet there were cool designer nappy bags and gorgeous baby clothes. “Everyone used either a plastic bag or a Huggies container which you pull out and use 20 times a day,” says bubbly Caitlin who has a profound love of Noosa, its restaurants, beach, weather, Farmers Market and of course local Dashbaby stockists Noosa Classics and Captured Forever. “No wonder it got the better of me. Through sheer perseverance and a believing in what you’re doing I finally found a terrific industrial designer in Brisbane and after 18 months of sketches, 3D plans, prototypes and samples, the first Dash Clutch was made. Our next product was Baby/ Mum wraps which came about after seeing photos of Paula Yates carrying Tiger Lilly bundled in gorgeous zebra or coloured wrap. So the idea behind the wraps was no more colourful, cartoon, circus, train patterns, as half the time it ends up draped over mum breastfeeding or clashing with bub’s outfit so we choose a soft delicate material featuring the same 12 colours as the clutch. Two years on and we now have nappy bags which we like to say are fashionable, functional and affordable. We also have an awesome new range of 100 per cent organic cotton baby wear and accessories, more products are in the design stage and plans are in train for America, Canada and Europe.” Behind every mumpreneur is, in Caitlin’s case David her Superman. “Looking back over the last 10 years, I actually don’t know how he’s done it,” Caitlin says without hesitation although named a few runins with Council over developments such as the German restaurant, Sunshine Tadpoles and their house as getting in the way. “Not just work-wise but somehow Dave has managed to be a terrific father, an awesome husband, he maintains the house, mows the lawn, surfs, plays tennis and has a great circle of mates. He’s done a lot and has plenty on the horizon. We have a tavern in one of our shopping centres in Beachmere and the tavern at Eaton’s Hill, which is coming up to its first birthday, is the largest tavern in Australia. It has been awarded the Best Tavern in Queensland and boasts nine bars, a function centre, restaurants and a concert hall so we get to meet everyone from Jimmy Barnes to Marilyn Manson.”

PETER LIK

LAST SURF - Crystal Pier, Pacific Beach, California This evening was a pretty low tide and I wanted to capture the magic of California in a reflection. As the waves receded, the light I was chasing was perfect. A ripper sunset really kicked in on the horizon and I quickly fired off a few frames at the perfect moment. Composition was critical as I wanted the pier to carry your eye right into the image... to take you there.

MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER

International photographer Peter Lik

Photography. Love it! And I’m glad to share that feeling with you.

Left: Moonlight Reflections - La Jolla, California I have had a fascination with the moon for years and have always strived for the perfect shot of the moon over the ocean. I waited days for the right cloud cover in order to emulate a perfect reflection to compliment the moon which came to create a natural stairway. Moments after I pressed the shutter, the clouds concealed the beauty of the moon and the shot was gone forever. When you look at this image I hope you feel as I did facing the full moon. I live for these experiences where only the serenity and beauty in nature can deliver.

P

eter Lik stands at the summit of landscape photography. Worldrenowned, highly awarded, and boasting a huge international following, Lik’s journey had humble origins. Born in Melbourne, Australia, to Czech immigrants, it was his parents’ gift of a Kodak Brownie camera on his eighth birthday that set young Peter’s course. Entirely self-taught, Lik worked hard at his craft before making a life-changing decision: to come to the United States in 1984. A defining moment in Lik’s life came when he was introduced to the medium format panoramic camera. This larger-than-life camera compelled Peter to rise to its challenge to “Go big or go home.” Lik did both. He returned to Australia to photograph the vastness of the Great South Land. Peter then went on to open his own fine art publishing company as well as his first gallery in his adopted hometown of Cairns. He returned to the States in 1989 for another jaunt before undertaking a mammoth trip early in the new millennium to photograph landscapes of all 50 states. Fifty thousand miles and 1,000 rolls of film later, the “biggest challenge of my life” was completed.

Highlights of Peter’s American odyssey can be found in his book “Spirit of America.” Lik’s stature as a photographer has been indisputably confirmed with his receipt of the award of Master Photographer from both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He has also been awarded fellowships by the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) and The Royal Photographic Society (RPS). Two more landmarks for Lik were the world record sale of his photograph “One,” for $1 million and the exhibition of two of his iconic images, “Ghost” and “Inner Peace,” in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Lik’s masterworks include “Ancient Spirit,” “Sacred Sunrise,” “Angel’s Heart,” “Tree of Life” and the highly acclaimed “Ghost.” Each Limited Edition release is greeted with great enthusiasm by collectors and this has been reflected in recent record- breaking sales. Now at the top of his game, Peter Lik is “loving it!” at full throttle and the animated Aussie is showing no signs of slowing down.

Body art under the spotlight

T

he Australian Body Art Carnivale is centred on competitions related to full body art, of the temporary paint not tattoo variety, including face painting. “There are also competitions and exhibitions in wearable art, pavement/chalk art, vehicle/car bonnet art and photography and overall there are numerous opportunities for artists with backgrounds in visual art, make up and special effects, textile art, street art, graphic art, chalk art and more,” says event manager Danielle Taylor. “Artists can choose to paint their own model or we’ll supply one free of charge.” One of the best body artists in the business is Nina M of Nina&Brady, who’s wondering how she’ll interpret the competition theme of Under the Sea. “This will be the third year I’ve competed,” says Nina. “There really is nothing like the buzz of the Carnivale weekend. As an artist, it’s a thrill to be surrounded by so many other fabulous creative souls, doing what we love - bringing bodies to life with paint, colour and fun. “Every year there are people who’ve never tried body painting before – and really for any artist, it’s just applying painterly techniques to a different canvas – the human body. “I really encourage artists out there to get involved. We’ll be running workshops leading up to the Carnivale for artists and hobbyists who have never painted on the body and need confidence to enter.” The Australian Body Art Carnivale, will be held in Eumundi on 12 and 13 May. Noosa Longweekend

Anthony Garcia

Ian Mackellar, festival director for the Noosa Longweekend has devised another exciting program for this year with over 65 events and 35 per cent of the program will be free of charge.

T

he annual Noosa Longweekend Festival, a 10 day (and night) celebration of music, theatre, dance, literature, forums, film, food, visual arts and workshops will see the beachside playground of Noosa transformed into ‘culture central’ from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 June. Audiences will be treated to the crème de la crème of Australian talent including names such as John Bell, Bruce Beresford, Andrew Denton, Peter FizSimons, Jennifer Byrne, Anthony Garcia, William Barton, Expressions Dance Company and more, as well as an unprecedented line-up of Riannon McLean image by Fiona Cullen international performers hailing from Quebec, New York and London. He’s also hinted that audiences could be in for a few surprises as part of the festival’s eleventh year. “As we embark on our second decade of Noosa Longweekend Festivals, in addition to presenting firm festival favourites, such as classical and contemporary music, literary events and dance, we’ll be shaking things up a little with a number of acts that may be considered risqué or at the very least, thought provoking,” says Ian who is also looking forward to revealing the full program on Thursday 3 May. “However we intend to release some featured events ahead of that date in order to allow patrons to secure their tickets earlier and also whet appetites with a taste of things to come.” Continuing on the tradition from the first festival in 2001, patron and dramatist, David Williamson will present his latest play When Dad Married Fury. The black comedy will be presented directly after its Sydney Ensemble Theatre Company season and revolves around the significant birthday of family patriarch, Alan and the surprise introduction of his new foreign wife – much to the horror of his children and grandchildren. Visit www.noosalongweekend.com to keep up with festival news, program and ticketing information. Noosa’s Harrison Roach Photo courtesy Kristin/ASP.

LOOBIE'S STORY

I

ndulge in effortless silhouettes amalgamated with a colour palette reminiscent of crisp winter skies, cobble stone fire places and the quixotic winter sun. Exclusive

prints, recoloured and redesigned by designer, Laurinda Sutcliffe are a predominant feature in the collection, seamlessly developed to offer unique yet wearable garments. "As in previous seasons and in response to consumer demand, we work hard to give our customers alternatives to the predictability of black. So in addition to our signature indigo shades, we have added combinations of taupe and pewter, and stone and chocolate for a more sophisticated alternative to the more feminine colour palette that we are known for." This season Sutcliffe introduces luxurious leather jackets, a faux fur jacket and rabbit fur vests in a selection of styles, emphasising on the layering aspect that has rapidly become a key characteristic of the Loobie's Story design aesthetic. Add NZ Merino undergarments to this offer and the sheer silk prints that she is so well-known for, to create an outfit suitable for the mildest to the coolest winter days. And the venturing into new territory doesn't stop at fur. Due to popular demand, Laurinda has extended Loobie;s Story's offering to include a small selection of bohemian inspired necklaces to multi-task across any garment.

The Classics are Back. It's time to learn from the girls!

This season choose timeless pieces to update and invigorate your wardrobe, as Autumn 2012 is predicted to herald the return of the classic three-piece suit . Style never goes out of fashion - but sometimes when you're following the latest fashion trends you may forget that. Be sure to have a two-button suit jacket in your wardrobe, these work well when it comes to slimming the waistline and implying height. Charcoal is set to be 'the look' this season, but don't forget to accentuate it with a dash of colour. Try a colourful tie with stripes or polka dots or solid Colour - and be on the lookout for a matching pocket square (hankie) which will add a suave touch to your total appearance. You can learn a lot from old movies and of course, James Bond. Style never goes out of fashion - it just evolves. Slim cut shirts are still here, so check out your favourite boutique for the new colour palette. We have it on good authority that hues of blue, pink and purple will be scene stealers this season. And you can never go past classic black in suits, pants, jackets and leather accessories for Autumn and Winter.

Looking high brow

MAKE BROWS A STEALTH WEAPON NOT AN ARCH ENEMY.

F

ew things make you appear more groomed than well-plucked eyebrows but if you’re raising your brows at the mere thought, just follow the trend.

If you over-pluck, you're stuck. Unlike most hairs on your body, your brows won't always grow back once they're yanked. 20

NoosaStyleLiving

Women have their eyebrows tweezed or threaded professionally and the trend is so hot, eyebrow boutiques or brow bars are popping up everywhere. Why not make an appointment with a professional to do your eyebrows first to set a 'blueprint', then all you have to do is pluck where the hairs grow back. The biggest mistake people make is to tweeze too much. Avoid overplucking as it can take months for brows to grow back. Here's a simple trick to remember: The space between your brows should be equal to, or a little wider than, your eyes. To find where your brow should go, take a long eye shadow brush or pencil and hold it parallel to the side of your nose. Where the brush meets your brow is where your brow should begin. To find the end of your brow, extend the brush diagonally from your nostril, following the outside edge of your eye toward the brow. Where the inside edge of the brush hits is where your brow should end. The best brows have a slight arch. To find yours, hold the brush parallel to the outside edge of the coloured part of your eye (the iris). Where the brush meets the brow is where the highest part of your brow should be. Cleanse your skin. Exfoliating with a gentle scrub helps prep the area as well. And you'll need to invest in a good pair of tweezers with a slanted edge. Make sure you're near a window with light pouring in or under a bright light with a good magnifying mirror. Be sure and flip it over to see your overall effect in the regular mirror every now and then. Make sure to pluck hairs in the direction they grow. Don't grab too many hairs at a time. You can hold skin taut as you pluck. It's a myth that brows should never be tweezed from above. You want both the bottoms and tops to be smooth. So be careful, but tweeze the top and the bottom. If you over-pluck, you're stuck. Unlike most hairs on your body, your brows won't always grow back once they're yanked. Afterwards apply say an aloe vera gel to calm any redness. If you use a pencil to fill in sparse brows, apply with short, feathered strokes from the inside of the brow out. Then carefully rub brows with a brush or your fingertips to soften the effect. Brow gel helps keep your brows in place all day. Or if you don't have gel, apply a dab of hairspray to your finger and use it to keep unruly hairs in place

musical chairs...

A

lbert Einstein once said “A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy.” In Matthew Tanner’s case he’ll just take the chair but not any old one. Chairs have never taken a back seat in your life have they? When I was an expat kid in Germany in the 1960s my folks acquired a lot of beautiful Danish teak furniture and it didn’t take long before I also had the bug for well-designed timber furniture. As the 80s came and went, I began to notice how Australian furniture of the 50s and 60s had its own particular style, although with a Danish influence. Years later in Noosa I was between jobs, collecting more and more chairs and my wife, Lynne, was hand-printing fabric. I was thinking about my collection of unrestored 50s and 60s chairs and suddenly it just clicked . . . use her take on fabric design on MY beautiful chairs . . . brilliant! A match made in heaven. Why on earth hadn't I thought of it before? Describe the first chairs of note and the beginning of your ‘love affair’? The first real retro chairs were a pair bought from a pre-loved furniture guy in Eumundi Road in 1992 and we still have them. They had fabulous bones under the dowdy upholstery and with their eccentric architectural shape, parabolic arch legs and weird jelly bean side panels, they were crying out to be rescued from ignominy. I didn't see another example of them until last year when my scout from Gympie brought a pair in. I found out by chance, recently, that they are very rare and were made by a tiny company which operated in Rocklea [Brisbane] for a few years in the early 50s. They have been recovered twice and now have pride of place in our living room. Those two chairs by an obscure manufacturer kick-started my passion for what was then the ubiquitous Australian TV chair. In those days you could find TV chairs everywhere. You could bludge them off Nana, pick them up by the side of the road or find them at the tip. If you paid more than 20 bucks for them, you were mad. The sheer variety of styles and timbers used in these chairs was astonishing and made me curious about who made them and why they were produced in such numbers. We all know the big high-end names like Fler and Parker but there were many other mass market manufacturers like Don Rex and smaller, local companies such as La Fay and Vuer. Many other names have been lost to time. Had any funny experiences or met any odd-balls in your chair quests? When you buy from Ebay you never know who you're dealing with. One of the first vendors was a toothless couple in suburban Brisbane. From the road it looked like their highset home was perched on an exploding mound of old furniture which was spilling across the garden and into the street. Their extremely fierce, ugly dog was freaking out behind a fence and there was a constant stream of vans, trailers and utes picking up bargains. With a naked shop window mannequin perched atop a severely bent but massive birdcage, the atmosphere was edging surreally towards the carnivalesque. I imagine the neighbours were not best pleased. During a council pick up, I spied a three piece bamboo suite by the side of the road. Two well-dressed elderly ladies were debating the impossibility of getting it into their tiny car and the option of hiding it in the bushes to come back later

with a station wagon. I overheard them and told them it wouldn't be there when they came back and so they good naturedly let me take it. Which ones do you love most and is parting with them difficult? My favourite chairs are Australian from the mid 50s to mid 60s - my current thing is for recliners in premium timbers. But almost anything by Fler or TH Brown or Danish Deluxe will get my blood pumping. It's the attention to detail and the skill of the designer that gets me every time. Also, because there were so many obscure makers and designers around then, you never know what unsung gem you'll find tomorrow. These chairs are unique in the wider world and we all have a duty to preserve our national heritage for future generations. Honest! The original makers put a lot of effort into creating them and a lot goes into resurrecting them. It gives me a thrill to see them happily fitting into people's homes, where they can begin a new life with their adopted families. What’s missing in your 100 plus collection? My current chair obsession is finding a complete Fler SC58 lounge suite. It's so cool, it would look completely at home in an episode of The Jetsons meet Mad Men. Chair peep Matthew Tanner and wife Lynne moved to Noosa in 1991 after spending the '80s art directing national weekly magazines. Freed from the constraints of nine to five office work, Lynne was able to indulge her interest in textile design and Matthew continued in graphic design before teaching it at the University of the Sunshine Coast for 11 years. They started Social Fabric Chair Gallery in Doonan three years ago to pursue their combined passion for colour, design and the Australian TV chair.

Blessed with a magnificent waterway, Noosaville has an esplanade and side streets of chic stores, eateries, accommodation options and popular riverside green spaces.

F

rom sun-up, the Noosa River provides the perfect backdrop for Tai-chi and yoga enthusiasts. Joggers, walkers and cyclists are out in force while well behaved pooches big and small and owners strut their stuff, some a little weary after a tear around the leash-free park and Frisbee catching in the shallow water across the Noosa Waters’ canal bridge. Here the path continues to the Marina at Tewantin or go the other way towards Noosa Heads and the Noosa National Park. Meanwhile other locals and visitors prefer to sip their lattes and juices at the many cafes serving breakfast. The tranquil broad stretch of the Noosa River is edged with sand and runs parallel to Gympie Terrace. It has been charmingly landscaped, dotted with plentiful barbecues, gazebos, playgrounds, exercise equipment, timber picnic tables and bench seating under shaded trees from where lorikeets belt out birdsong in the late afternoon. Watch families playing cricket, swimmers enjoying the cool briny and anglers hoping they’ll hook a whiting or flathead. In the 1920s the centre of the sleepy riverside village was the only café The Favourite. It was owned by the Massouds and was the meeting place for troops during World War 11 when they drove their amphibious army ducks out of the river to collect their fresh fish and chips, cooked on a tiny wooden stove. The restaurant Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club remains but is named after the

Massoud matriarch Maisie. Today’s Noosaville is a thriving area with notable precincts, a kaleidoscope of crowd-pleasing shopping, dining and leisure options, all just a five-minute drive from sophisticated Hastings Street. Along the foreshore, info centres book tours to the Fraser Island, the Everglades and jazz cruises. Ducks waddle and pelicans flap their wings and thrust their beaks under water looking for a feed of fish or join seagulls onshore hoping for leftovers from the numerous barbecues. There are boat sheds for hiring a kayak or jet ski, chartering a barbecue pontoon, fishing tinnie or stand-up paddle board. The gondola cruises by and spells romance. Hailing the Riverlight ferry from one of the jetties is a must. It wends its way from the Noosa Marina to the Sheraton. On the other side of Gympie Terrace and just around each corner are places to hire a bike, side-by-side boutiques, book shops, cafes, takeaway food, gelaterias, day spas, hairdressers, homewares shops, liquor supplies and art galleries. At each end of the esplanade are smart restaurants and at the Tewantin end is the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, not only a social hub but a hit with kids wishing to learn how to sail. The system of waterways from the Noosa River includes clear lakes, dark tannin-stained waters and sand dunes form the gateway to the world's largest sand island and heritage-listed Fraser Island. Cyclists can use the dedicated pathway which extends from the Noosa River, looping around Noosa Waters or via the mangroves and creeks to Noosa Junction. Life down by the riverside and environs exudes a casual elegance and relaxed ambience and with its smorgasbord of restaurants, alfresco eateries, organic produce, well-made coffee, ice creameries and takeaways, plus at the not-too-far-away Sunday Farmers Markets, there's a culinary tour of the world to suit all tastes and budgets. From Gympie Terrace and its environs to other precincts such as Gibson Road Gateway Drive, the Noosa Marina and hot spots inbetween and numerous munch palaces to those with a serious penchant for retail therapy, you’ll need plenty of time to peruse the Noosaville scene.

he brains behind the highly acclaimed Surrender Dorothy brand is Louise Starr, who has reopened her award-winning hair salon and training studio. Reminiscent of a stylish living room with retro dressing tables and comfortable lounge chairs, Louise is focused on listening to her clients and learning about their lifestyle and hair styling ideas. “I want people to feel relaxed, unintimidated and when they leave, feel like the Queen”, says Louise who completed training and certification in the UK before becoming the artistic director of Toni & Guy Hairdressing in Brisbane. Memorable moments included being stylist on Powderfinger’s video. Whilst focussing on precision cutting of natural hair textures and hair colour to suit face shape, skin tone and lifestyle, Louise says the trend at the moment is bright colours on the tips of the hair. “It’s all about very grown-out raw fade colour with chocolate roots, caramel and cool blondes like Drew Barrymore. Hair

colour should always be designed to suit skin tones and cuts more individual. “Haircuts are no longer super straight but have root-lift and movement - lots of blow dry body and softness. Blow drying bars are popping up all over London and we have a one here, so you can look amazing between haircuts or for a special night/day out. “Real feather hair extensions are a strong trend on the catwalks and worn by many celebrities of late. Sëan Tretheway, known to many as Sëan the Prestidigitator, sets sail with another rollicking adventure tale, writes Helen Flanagan.

eyond the Road, based on Sëan’s semiautobiographical adventures, follows the journey of Jack Slack, a socially inept computer programmer who is swept up into a series of adventures with the eloquent and mysterious Blazer Madison and the enigmatic, sexy Hollie. And when the last page is turned and the book put down, “something stays with the reader - something that will stay with them for the rest of their life,” Sëan, says about the feelgood story of one man’s journey off the road and onto the high seas. In an attempt to run away from his past, Jack joins Blazer on a homebuilt cement sailboat headed for the South Pacific. Once there Jack has to face all his demons, learning that one’s reality is whatever you decide to make it. “There are shades of my past. When I was eighteen, my sister, Roxanne and her then husband, Jeannot had just returned from Tahiti where Jeannot was born and they had met. They invited me to help them build a cement boat in their backyard to then sail back to the South Pacific. As I described in the book: ‘On the voyage, everything that could go wrong,

B

Sëan is thrilled with the feedback from the book with many saying it reminds them of Eckhart Tolle’s writing. “The launch of Trio’s was a great venue as half the book takes place on a boat and I’ve known the owners Geoff, Julia and David since I first came to Noosa thirty years ago,” adds Sëan whose sons, Alex and James are equally creative especially with hip-hop music. These days Sëan likes to think of life as an adventure, whether it's walking to the shops or going on a road trip in his campervan named Beyond.“It's all about attitude. In everyday lives, we can get bored by the repetition of day to day, but it doesn't have to be that way. There are things happening all the time which are exciting and fun. Just open your eyes and look for them. Albert Einstein nailed it when he said: ‘You can live your life as though nothing is a miracle, or you can live your life as though everything is a miracle.’ I know how I choose to live mine.” With the book in stores, Sean’s adventures will continue around Australia. Launches in Vanuatu and New Zealand are

on the road again... hinted and there’s a planned spin-off book about Hollie and Cynthia, characters from his two books. It has been over five years since Sëan worked his magic as a prestidigitator to diners in Hastings Street restaurants and now he’s back, every Friday and Saturday night as the house magician at Gaston. “It's a great venue with just the right vibe for what I do,” an excited Sëan explains. “You can expect to see lots of cards appearing on the ceiling there over the coming months. “Another reason why I love working there is the history. When I first came to Noosa in 1982, Gaston was in Sunshine Beach and everyone in town gathered there every Monday night. Such a special time.” New tricks are on the cards and up Sëan’s sleeve following his attendance last year at two huge magic conventions in Las Vegas. “I mingled with some legends of magic as well as a lot of the young upand-comers who will one day become famous, or a like many magicians I admire most are known to every magician in the world, but are not necessarily in the public eye. I did however meet famous magicians such as Kris Angel, Siegfried and Roy, David Copperfield and the Amazing Jonathon. What an inspiration.” Photographer: Tilly Hinton Sëan Tretheway

did. We lost the use of our engine which meant we had no electricity for light and keeping the deep freezer going. We lost the use of our main sail which slowed us down considerably. The hydraulic system for the steering broke so we had to tie ropes to the rudder which we pulled on one side or the other to steer. A trip that normally takes about twenty days, took over forty! As a young twenty year old city boy, it was an amazing adventure which shaped the rest of my life. Once we got to Tahiti, I had many adventures living there for six months and then moved on to New Zealand, where I lived for a further six months’.”

The remarkable qualities of Jojoba... JOJOBA HAS A LONG HISTORY, AND HAS BEEN USED SINCE THE 1700S BY NATIVE AMERICANS AS A TREATMENT FOR ALL KINDS OF SKIN CONDITIONS AND AS A MEDICINE. IT'S HYPOALLERGENIC AND SUITABLE FOR EVEN THE MOST SENSITIVE OF SKIN TYPES - EVEN BABIES.

C

ontrary to popular belief, Jojoba is not an oil, it is a liquid wax ester, the only plant in the plant kingdom to produce wax esters rather than oil. Wax esters are what naturally occur in young skin and as we age, they begin to diminish, so jojoba puts back what age takes away. Jojoba is a 3-4 metre shrub that is drought tolerant and salt tolerant, and as it has no serious pests or diseases in Australia, there is no need for chemicals to be used on the shrubs. The plants and beans are not eaten by insects, livestock or wildlife and no cultivation of jojoba plantations is required, making jojoba a Carbon Negative crop, with each hectare drawing in 1.66 metric tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere each season. The Jojoba Company, proudly Australian owned and made, has created a natural skin care range based entirely on the remarkable qualities of pure Australian golden jojoba. Their collection uses the unique molecules of their own, pure Australian golden jojoba to protect and nurture skin. The way nature intended. 50% of the mass of the jojoba bean is a luxurious golden liquid wax that is released when the beans are cold pressed. In the

process beans are gently and slowly cold pressed under certified organic protocols to protect precious nutrients Australian cold pressed golden jojoba is naturally antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, is rich in powerful antioxidants and contains Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, Vitamins A, D and E - all in ideal balance for healing skin and scalp Jojoba moisturises lips, face, hands, cuticles, body and hair, leaving skin smooth and hair silky. You can apply jojoba to wet or dry skin, hair and nails. To see & feel the range of Jojoba products call in to: Organika on Weyba Road Noosaville

Blossom Goodchild

Blossom Goodchild reveals to Helen Flanagan how she has successfully woven acting and channelling into her life.

V

ivid memories of life in north England’s Bognor Regis are clouded by boarding school days and the convent nuns. Not surprising really, given Blossom Goodchild had been given the starring role in an award-winning film made by her father. She was two and hooked. She wanted to be an actor just like her parents.

After three years at The Guildford School of Acting, roles in Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and musicals such as Godspell, Guys and Dolls, and Cabaret followed. “I love straight acting too and was very fortunate to have some meaty roles with the Repertory Theatre Company,” she reminisces, although when theatre was scarce she earned a crust waitressing, cleaning, as a nanny or playing the guitar in restaurants. “I can’t say in all honesty I really starred in anything in those days. To get a job in the chorus was enough to feed my soul and as long as I could have ‘the smell of the greasepaint…the roar of the crowd’, I was more than happy. One of the most memorable times though was performing in a play called Stepping Out. My mother was also in the cast and travelling to rehearsal and working professionally with her was a wonderful experience. “Another memorable time was at drama college. I had the lead role for our final shows, where all the agents and casting directors come to scout for new talent. I was ‘killed off ‘in the first act and had to lay dead on a plinth in full view for the entire second half. All went well in rehearsal. Unfortunately when it came to show time, I became a little too relaxed and must have drifted off to sleep. I woke in the middle of the act, sat up, saw the openmouthed audience staring at me in disbelief and promptly lay back down again in a cold sweat.” Blossom, son Ritchie and second husband Goody who she met on a love-at-first-sight blind date moved to Noosa after holidaying with her sister.“I love Noosa, she says with a sigh.‘It has an amazing energy and I intend to remain here for the rest of my days.” One of the first roles she was offered was Shirley Valentine. ‘It’s a one woman play which goes on for over two hours, so it took me about five months to learn. I love it, it’s an actresses’ dream play. Funny, sad and most importantly it has a great message about living life to the full. A lady on depression medication wrote to me after seeing it and said she threw away her pills the next day deciding instead to get on with her life. To reach souls through entertainment and assist them on their journey is indeed an honour.”

“When I’m on stage I feel I am home … I always say performing is my passion and spiritual work is my mission”

Other memorable roles include Evy Mera in The Gingerbread Lady for which she won Best Actress and also Performer of the Year for the Sunshine Coast Theatre Alliance, and Cassie in Moments, a musical that Noosa Longweekend festival director Ian Mackellar wrote for both of them. “When I’m on stage I feel I am home. My soul misses it greatly when not on the boards. I always say performing is my passion and spiritual work is my mission,” says Blossom who unravels the mystique of channelling as “when an earthly soul is able to receive messages from those no longer/or never have been on earth. The messages assist us in ways to live our lives and become who we truly are. The world is awakening rapidly and this poignant year of 2012 is one of great change. We are at the end of a 26,000 year cycle and there is to be a huge shift in consciousness and here we are, privileged to be alive, slap bang in the middle of it. It is wonderfully exciting.” For 20 years Blossom suffered a peculiar ailment which, despite collapsing into a semi coma, could not be identified even after numerous tests for epilepsy, having brain scans and taking pills. She became interested in the spiritual movement and was aware that she had a Native American Guide with her called White Cloud. “I met a very gifted clairvoyant, White Cloud appeared to her, opening and shutting his mouth but becoming frustrated because he could not be heard,” explains Blossom, who is known as a direct voice channelling medium.“He asked her to ask me if I would get a pen and paper because he’d like to speak to me. No sooner had I picked up the pen, words came flooding into my head. He told me he’d like to use me as his channel and actually speak through me. So it began and from that day, my illness simply disappeared. We have been working together now for 12 years doing readings for souls to help them on their journey and also holding White Cloud channelling evenings and workshops called Love Light & Laughter to get souls to lighten up. It was not always easy for me to speak about this as I have been ridiculed many times over the years, but I’m happy to say that so many are now on board the Peace Train and loving the ride. As White Cloud and The Federation of Light say: There is only Love - nothing else, only Love”.

Award-winning Ways.. S

taff at The Spa at Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort were understandably excited, when Spa manager Julie Narouz was awarded Best Spa Manager 2011 at the 2011 ASPA Spas of Excellence Awards, and The Spa was chosen as one of five finalists for Best Destination Spa – Resort. Ms Narouz said she was delighted to be recognised by her industry peers. “I have won awards overseas for spa management but this is the first time I have won an Australia-Pacific award and I’m very proud of it,” she said. Ms Narouz believes her award reflects positively on The Spa. “We’ve always known The Spa is a special place, the ambience is 5-star and this award is recognition of what we provide,” she said. “A spa manager has to be the facilitator for a great spa experience, to create an atmosphere that is safe and therapeutic. “I put a lot of effort into staff training and quality assurance. We give our clients a ‘heaven on earth’ experience.” Under Ms Narouz’s direction The Spa

has tailored a number of spa packages that are hugely popular, such as the Half Day Spa Escape, where clients enjoy a HydroMassage and Steam Experience, including blitz shower and infrared sauna, followed by their choice of a tropical enzyme facial, sugar scrub or full body massage. The Spa’s inground flotation pool is quite possibly unique in Australia. Clients can feel the total relaxation of weightlessness within minutes of floating in highly mineralised water and enter a meditation state by gazing at the starlit ceiling. Ms Narouz said she was proud that The Spa was a finalist in its awards category. “Our clients constantly give us excellent feedback and our repeat custom is testament that The Spa is a very special place to visit.” To view The Spa’s comprehensive menu, or to find out about spa specials, visit www.noosasprings.com.au or phone 5440 3333 to book your spa treatment.

H

ow do you define a village? A cluster of dwellings within a community? Well yes it is that, but more. In the case of the near perfect Sunshine Beach village it is the heart and soul of the southern end of Noosa. “I think it’s an eclectic mesh of chic meets laidback,” describes Noosa Style’s sales manager Meta Georgeson. “The Duke Street strip thrives on the beat of a village drum, offering great coffee, good food and wine bars to boot. “Locals say that living here is surreal, to be surrounded by nature’s beauty, coupled with a cosmopolitan vibe is no less than perfect, but it is the excitement of being a

part of a village family that sets it apart with the locals treasuring their community and surroundings. “Mornings start with salt and sand stained beach dwellers ordering coffees and enjoying it on a timber bench while the dappled sunlight peeks through old fig trees. The only disturbance is children hanging off racing scooters and skateboards but in a way this adds to the innate village spirit and sooths the soul” “The smell of bacon and eggs pays homage to bare foot mornings along with the essence of fresh coffee as Meta joins the throng of people chatting with gusto and watches retailers open for the day. “There’s a varied retail mix from surf shop to seafood, hairdressers to homewares and restaurants to a convenience store. It’s a buzz, it’s alive, and with a corridor view of the Pacific Ocean only dispersed by the tall pine trees, it’s no wonder people from all walks of life reside in one of Australia’s most prestigious areas. “The spectacular beach acts as a runway to the nature walks and trails that run across the Noosa headland, breathtaking views and sacred sites - which generations have gone in search of the perfect break at

Martin is looking forward to his Straw and Strings event and cooking with Mark Jensen, Jonathon Barthelmess, Cameron Matthews and his favourite food doyenne, Stephanie Alexander. River Cottage’s Marc Wohner has decided on his ever popular Noosa spanner crab linguini for his top local produce demonstration with Pitchfork’s Craig Galea and for the dinner with Sydney’s Flying Fish and SBS series presenter Peter Kuruvita, expect the menu to feature a trio of crab dish, lamb and smoked duck, matched with wines from great vineyards such as The lane, Woodstock and Fraser Gallop. There’s a perfect match at Embassy XO when clever Brendon Barker once again shares the kitchen with Teage Ezard from Ezard in Melbourne, however this time it’s Brendon’s kitchen. Highlights of the multi course dinner include a Japanese inspired swordfish shooter served with Ruinart Champagne; 5-spiced smoked ocean trout, watercress and green chilli; red roasted duck, pineapple, bean shoots, candied garlic and ginger dressing; eight plus score wagyu beef with soft white polenta, asparagus, sticky shallot sauce, fresh shave truffle and mache salad; and steamed chocolate buns, chilli raspberry dipping sauce. Blue Angel’s Catherine Farrelly is excited. The new autumn menu features delights such as chicken three ways – prosciutto-wrapped supreme on crushed kipfler, Swiss pie and confit leg finished with roast jus; barramundi on Spanish chorizo and pea fricassee; charred eye fillet blue cheese gratin on Swiss mushrooms and masala reduction with sweet potato fries; and slow roasted cooked crisp belly pork, seared scallop and capsicum coulis finished with apple veloute. Plus she’s looking forward to her first festival and hosting True South Dining’s Ben Battersby as a guest in her restaurant. “With my New Zealand background and Queenstown being one of my favourite places I know there’ll be outstanding dishes at Sunday’s Lake and River dinner,” Catherine says.

Local Chefs show off talents Queen of Bubbles and champagne expert Bernadette O’Shea is a big admirer of the festival and the way it has evolved or as she so succinctly says “a new layer of extra glow every year. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and this adds to people's enjoyment. “I look forward to spreading the word about the greatest wine on earth on Saturday and Sunday and working with a delightful Frenchman Julien Marteau, who is the brand ambassador for Mumm champagne. Seven years ago Shane Bailey cooked a lunch for 250 people at Lions Park. Today, he patiently co-ordinates all the chefs, recipes and food ordering. “It’s not about egos, even though l think some of these guys are superstars of the culinary world, it’s a chance for everyone to learn something, and have a damn good time doing it,” says berardo’s executive chef Shane. “We will be serving 120 guests each night for the degustations so that’s nearly 3000 dishes over three days and this year with added events we will be cooking at least 3000 more dishes than last year. That’s in addition to the extra food we will be cooking at festival village. I’m looking forward to working with all the chefs, especially the internationals.”

n support of Queensland burns victim and celebrity chef, Matt Golinski and burns research organisation, The McComb Research Foundation, Plates for Mates is a national fundraiser conceived by a group of Australia’s leading chefs as a way of expressing their care, concern and support for friend, celebrity chef and caterer, Matt Golinski. Matt tragically lost his wife, Rachael and their three daughters, Starlia, Willow and Sage Golinski in a home fire on Boxing Day 2011. Matt sustained third degree burns to over 40 per cent of his body and continues to receive treatment at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital where is condition is now listed as stable. Funds raised will be in aid of the Matt Golinski Recovery Fund Trust, a financial trust fund set up to assist Matt’s emotional and physical recovery, and shared via a donation to The McComb Research Foundation, a charitable organisation set up by plastic and reconstructive surgeon and former Australian of the Year Dr Fiona Wood along with friend and scientist, Marie Stoner to aid burns research. Plates for Mates spokesperson and executive chef of Brisbane’s Bretts Wharf and Tank restaurants, Alastair McLeod said that Plates for Mates was developed in conjunction with fellow chefs including George Calombaris, Manu Feildel, Damian Heads, Gary Mehigan and Janelle Bloom. All are friends of Matt. “After initially feeling powerless about how to help our friend as a result of this tragedy, we had the idea to combine our love of cooking with our love for Matt and his family and so Plates for Mates was born,” explains Alastair. “George, Manu, Damian, Gary, Janelle and I call on our fellow restaurateurs and eateries to join us in devising fund raising activities to be held during the month of April. It is up to the individual business to determine how they wish to participate, for instance, they can hold one event, stage several events or do something every day. Some ideas include inviting every customer to donate one dollar, creating a special dinner event, asking staff to donate their tips and the restaurant matching that, or a simple competition or raffle. We of all people know how tough the restaurant game is, so we want this to be as simple as possible for all types of food and beverage related industries to be involved - it might be as simple as adding 20 cents to the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of beer, and donating that. There is no pressure as to the value of the donation. “As an industry we are ‘hospitable’ by nature and one of our own has had this terrible tragedy happen.

I hope that as an industry we can band together with the help of our loyal customers and really get behind this concept. “Matt’s injuries are severe and his physical and emotional recovery will be a long one. We are hoping that some financial support will help to ease the burden and at the same time assist the needs of other burns sufferers.” Alastair said that sharing the proceeds of Plates for Mates with the McComb Research Foundation by way of a donation in Matt’s name would mean that other burns victims would benefit from funds raised. Dr Fiona Woods of The McComb Research Foundation was delighted about the initiative. The response so far has been outstanding with the most recent being utterly inspirational and overwhelming. Justin Miles, former executive chef at Noosa Springs who these days is executive chef and general manager of the three star rated Windy Point Restaurant and Cafe in Adelaide, organised a degustation for 110, with all wine donated as well as the staff’s time plus about 90 per cent of the food. USM’s Andrew Saunders was the games show hoststyle MC and Matt Schwab who was Matt Golinski’s sous chef at Ricky’s, flew from Beechworth in Victoria to assist in the kitchen. “We had a silent auction and raffle with 30 plus items such as magnums of wine, accommodation, dinners, a specially made glass platter, sporting memorabilia, 365 days of coffee and a dinner at Icebergs in Sydney with Layne Beachley and Kirk Pengilly,” says an elated Justin. ‘It was an amazing success due to the generosity of so many and the commitment of individuals and businesses. We have great pride in announcing that $21,044.63 was raised from the dinner, auctions and raffles with 100 per cent deposited into Matt’s fund to assist his physical and emotional recovery. Coming up locally is Bistro C’s Plates for Matt fundraiser organised by executive chef Dayle Merlo, offering yummy tapas platters with all proceeds going to Matt plus Noosa MV Queen owners who are organising a fundraiser lunch. Restaurants, cafes, suppliers and all food related industries or groups can register to become involved in via the official website www.platesformates.com.au Members of the public will also be able to access the site to view details of events and activities. For those unable to participate a donation tab has been set up on the website.

Only four hundred years ago, England and tea were barely acquainted but once introduced, tea lust changed the history of the world. espite the 8000 kilometres distance between England and China, the British demand for tea quickly became insatiable. So much so that while tea was sipped from delicate bone china cups and dainty fingers waggled, it was being purchased at the price of drug addiction in China. The tea trade was tightly entwined with opium sales. In the eyes of the Chinese Emperor the English trade hopefuls were looked down upon with indulgent curiosity. The English were described as ‘monkeys in suits’ and not received as equals. The Chinese would sell them tea, porcelain and silk as a contribution to advancing the culture of England but they wished to buy nothing. Silver was the only commodity with which tea could be traded. To finance the purchase of tea, the British brought opium from occupied India to China. It was then sold illegally for silver and traded for tea. Many port officials in China also took the opportunity to profit and appeared to enforce the opium ban by playing out mock battles with English ships using fireworks for sound effects. Tea comes from the plant Camelia Sinensis, native to the forests of China. Around 2000 BC Emperor Shen Nung accidentally boiled tea leaves that had fallen into his water pot. He wrote that he noticed the brew “gave vigour of body, contentment of mind and determination of purpose.” The Chinese first noticed what science has since proven. Tea contains an Amino acid called theanine, the effects of which are not imaginary. It increases alpha brain waves and has been compared to getting a massage or meditating. Theanine, unlike sedatives doesn't interfere with the ability to think. This is the concept behind the tea ceremony that causes a person to focus on the moment. Cloud and Mist Green Tea is one tea that can be traced back to the second century spiritual practise. It is a wild tea until plucked and crafted by monks in Lushan Mountain in Jianxi province, then shared with guests who climbed the mountain for philosophical conversation and inspiration. This tea forest is now UNESCO heritage-listed. Local tea aficionados Trudi Cauley and Marc King offer this tea on their menu at Metal Tiger Tea Emporium. “Despite there being more than a thousand different teas crafted in the world there are broadly three main categories of tea, green, black, and oolong,” comments Trudi. “All three kinds are made from the same plant species. The major differences between teas are a result of the different processing methods they undergo. Black teas undergo many hours of oxidation; oolongs receive less oxidation, and green teas are steamed to arrest oxidization as quickly as they were picked, the Chinese developed recipes for hundreds perhaps thousands of unique black, green and oolong teas. Each tea influenced by the soil type, altitude and local area where it’s grown.” By the mid-19th Century tea production in China was on the decline. Decades of opium trading had passed, more than a quarter of China’s male population were addicts and the country

D

was in turmoil. More tea was being produced and exported out of India and the thousands of unique hand crafted teas from China were overlooked. Today there are more than 25 different tea producing countries around the world but the main producers are India, China, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Indonesia. When Marc and Trudi first discovered their common passion for tea, they began to question why, when tea was enjoying sexy status around the world, it was so difficult to find ranges of amazing teas on the Coast. As they discovered small batch, hand crafted, organic and fair trade teas sourced direct from growers, Marc and Trudi realised there were other people wanting to experience tea drinking beyond Indian black tea. They began to envisage a world where “imaginations and the reality were not so far apart, where those who recognise tea as the stylish, sensual and exotic drink that it is, could come out to play.” They found numerous suppliers including Scott Wilson who treks into the mountains in China’s Yunnan to buy directly from small family plots at the price they ask for, and organic and biodynamic estates like Maikabari in India, which provides schools and health services for families. Most refreshing The over whelming response to Metal Tiger Tea Emporium has proven also what they long suspected – people are thirsty for an alternative to coffee. Dragon Pearls is a tea sensation amongst the 87 fair trade and organic teas from across the world on offer. It’s a green tea with a jasmine scent, having been rolled into small balls and laid out on drying mats with fresh jasmine flowers. Metal Tiger also serves Yum Cha daily and has a small menu of savoury and sweet dishes including creative Metal Tiger co-owner Marc King vegetarian dishes which are all vegan so have no egg or dairy. Selected items are also gluten free. To finish try the epitome of cool Bubble Tea, the Taiwanese ice tea specialty which has a super-sized straw designed for slurping.

Counterpoint to food traditions Slow Food stands at the crossroads of ecology and gastronomy, ethics and pleasure. It opposes the standardisation of taste and culture. roponents of Slow Food believe everyone has a fundamental right to the pleasure of good food and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that makes this pleasure possible. The association believes in the concept of neo-gastronomy – recognition of the strong connections between plate, planet, people and culture. A non-profit member-supported association, Slow Food was founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food we eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. Slow Food is a global, grassroots organisation with supporters in 150 countries who link the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment. Today, there are over 100,000 members joined in 1,300 convivia or local chapters, worldwide, as well as a network of 2,000 food communities who practice small-scale and sustainable production of quality foods. Erika Hackett, dedicated foodie and president of Slow Food Noosa says her involvement with food started at a young age: “My parents were Estonian, arrived here in the early 50s and my mother would drag us to the Queen Victoria Market [in Melbourne] to shop. She had a budget, as well as an eye for a bargain. Our kitchen was a hive of activity all weekend, making biscuits, bread and desserts. My father tended the back garden, there were chooks and ducks to look after and the Vacola set was in constant use preserving peaches, nectarines, apricots and quinces. Bread and bottled milk were delivered fresh daily. Entertaining was done around the kitchen table sharing casseroles made by friends and family. When I left home I worked in restaurants and at home maintained my passion for food. Ten years ago my husband Chris and I moved to Noosa and were introduced to Slow Food Noosa and loved giving back to the community in a small way and making a difference. As president, I love the challenge of being involved in helping raise funds to establish the school kitchen garden project. The underlying belief is that by introducing this holistic approach, we have a chance to positively influence children's food choices.” Gail Rast, who has a business called Life’s a Feast shares the Slow Food movement’s philosophies of good, clean and fair food, supporting local farmers and producers, replacing ‘fast’ food with real food and reigniting people’s interest in the food they eat. “I joined the committee of Slow Food Noosa in an effort to make a difference to the way the local and broader community look at their food choices and to inspire them to take pleasure from food and cooking which is also the fundamental philosophy behind my cooking classes,” explains Gail who is a big supporter of the monthly breakfasts with inspiring speakers such as Mark Tully from Blue Hills Poultry Stud and Louisa Raven from Cocoa Chocolat. “I also enjoyed the Heritage Potluck Dinner when some members prepared a dish from their cultural background and the feast was enjoyed as a shared table. I’m looking forward to hearing Graeme from Witjuti Grub Bushfood Nursery who will share his knowledge and experience in growing native food plants and Susan from Eumundi Beef who will tell us about her approach to healthy living and eating as nature intended. In the pipeline is a coffee appreciation course, Bastille Day dinner, luau, a visit to a local farm and our annual Terra Madre day celebration. All of our events are open to members, guests and non-members alike. For more information, visit www.slowfoodnoosa.com.”

Lindauer's Pearl Anniversary... Lindauer’s impressive sparkling wines are the perfect addition to any occasion. Whether you choose their delicious strawberry infused Fraise, or their more serious Special Reserve Brut Cuvee you will find them a delight. Appropriately for a sparkling brand, where it’s all about the bubbles or ‘bead’, Lindauer has also just celebrated their 30 year - ‘Pearl’ anniversary. To allow everyone to join in these milestone celebrations, Lindauer is running a 30th Anniversary Special throughout until the end April 2012; simply purchase a 750ml bottle of Lindauer Fraise or Lindauer Brut and visit www.lindauer30years.com.au for a chance to win a week in New York.

H

Lindauer Fraise NV For someone that loves something unique, a sparkling wine infused with natural strawberry. Full on the palate yet with an elegant finesse; the result of careful blending of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay base wines. The result is a vibrant but classy sparkling with a hint of sweetness and lingering finish. Just perfect for breakfast when you want to impress. And, I'm sure that your Mum would love to be woken up this Mother's Day with a flute of Lindauer Fraise served with a bowl of strawberries and her favourite cereal or pancakes. RRP $14.95

Lindauer Special Reserve Brut Cuvée NV This wine is made from Pinot Noir (75%) and Chardonnay (25%) from the mature Lindauer vineyards in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. The long, cool maritime influences here produce natural acidities in the grapes, ideal for the production of superior sparkling wine. Fruit chosen for this wine comes from the sites with strong silt and clay soils, as they provide the natural vigour and water holding capacity required to quickly ripen crops early in the season, before it loses its valuable acidity. The cuvée is held for 2 1/2years on lees before release. It is the predominance of Pinot Noir and this extended maturation time that leads to a complex full bodied wine, often described as “unexpectedly Champagne-like”. RRP $19.95

Grant Burge 2008 Shadrach OMG!! This wine is stunning. Grant Burge's 2008 Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon is a game-changing wine, that will definitely raise a few eyebrows. Grant worked with senior winemaker Craig Stansborough to obtain inspiration from the old world. He says that they have learnt a lot from the winemaking styles of Bordeaux, the cooler climate and the use of French oak, to create a more elegant

Cabernet with pure blackberry and blackcurrant flavours. The 2008 Shadrach is 80% Corryton Park Cabernet and 20% Barossa warm, floor fruit. The wine was aged in 75% new French oak and 25% one-year-old oak for 21 months, then kept in bottle for 12 months to produce a wine with a full and generous palate with great structure, finesse and superbly balanced fine grain tannins. Grant says "I always knew this little patch of dirt in Eden Valley at the historical Corryton Park vineyard had the potential to make one of Australia's great Cabernets - but it has taken until now to see it come to fruition." Definitely one for the cellar with over ten years recommended ( but perfect to drink now if you just can't wait!) CLASSIC WINES. from Campbells Campbells’ wonderfully rich, complex wines are cherished during the cooler months, yet they undoubtedly shine when the sun is out.

2011 Campbells Moscato The newest wine in the Campbells’ stable, the delicate yet vivacious Moscato is the perfect accompaniment to a long luxurious brunch, a cooling afternoon watching the world go by, or start to any good celebration. Perhaps the most cheerful wine style of all, Moscato’s freshness and low alcohol means it can be enjoyed throughout the day, from brunch to dessert, or enjoyed on its own - just because you want to. This elegant wine displays typically flamboyant muscat grape characters, a riot of citrus blossom, sweet summer berries, musk, rosewater and crushed grapes, balanced by natural spritz and cleansing acidity. (7% Alc./Vol. Available at cellar door and www.campbellswines.com.au and select retailers. RRP $18.00

NV Classic Rutherglen Muscat Rutherglen Muscat is the traditional match to rich fruit cakes and decadent chocolate desserts. What better time to indulge in this luscious, golden honeyed delight than in the cooler Autumn and Winter months? Oh that's right - Spring and Summer too - because this is my pick for a wine for all seasons!! It is a brilliant end to any dinner party and if you keep a bottle in the fridge you can add it to your dessert course as well by pouring it over ice-cream. It also makes a fine cocktail (with soda, crushed ice and fresh mint). The Classic classification is a matured style; wonderfully unctuous at room temperature, it transforms into a viscous, cooling delight when chilled. Rich, ripe raisin aromas follow on the complex palate; powerful, intense fruit characters are balanced by mellow oak on the lingering finish. (17.5% Alc./Vol. Available at cellar door and www.campbellswines.com.au and nationally at leading retail outlets. RRP $44

gardening Feijoas are prized around the world as a super food, yet are virtually unknown in Australia – until now.

Fragrant & smooth O Feijoas

“I can’t think of too many fruits as addictive and healthy as feijoas … you can smell their distinctive aroma a mile away and really crave them”

86

NoosaStyleLiving

ne of the first commercial feijoa orchards in Australia was Hinterland Feijoas which was established several years ago by Peter Heineger and Sally Hookey in Belli Park near Kenilworth. Feijoas originated in the forests of South America and are fragrant smooth-skinned green tropical tree fruit with creamy sweet jelly centres. They are part of the Myrtle family, which includes other fragrant plants such as eucalyptus, allspice, guavas and cloves. Their distinctive complex flavour has been likened to a mix of strawberries, pineapple and guavas, with undertones of quince, lemon and mint. In Australia they are sometimes known as pineapple guavas. The unique complexity and fragrance of the feijoa is the reason they are so versatile and addictive, with uses ranging from just munching them by the dozen to making beautiful perfumes. “They ripen in autumn providing an excellent fresh fruit option full of nutrients and especially Vitamin C to build immunity for the cooler months ahead,” says Sally proudly adding that in 2012 Hinterland Feijoas achieved certified organic (in conversion) status, and the quality of the fruit has been outstanding. “In New Zealand they are a major horticultural industry and most homes have a feijoa tree in their back yard. Aussies pronounce the fruit as “fay-jo-ahs”, Kiwis say “fee-jo-ahs”, but it’s really a Latin word that should sound something like “ f-jho-as” with a husky voice. “They are an extremely versatile fruit with very little wastage, being scooped out and eaten as fresh fruit and in fruit salads, used in juices, smoothies and ice creams, wines and vodkas, jams and chutneys, salads, in savoury dishes, salsas and especially in baking. They are also easily frozen for future use and are even used in perfumes and skincare ranges. The question should really be "What can't you do with a feijoa? Most customers Sally Hookey & Peter Heineger have mentioned that the feijoas taste just like they remember as kids, and have been so thankful to be able to get feijoas in Australia. As farmers it has been extremely rewarding to hear such positive feedback, so we are excited about future crops and the increasing awareness of the fruit.” Peter and Sally both have farming backgrounds and since planting in 2008, they have progressively added trees to 700, with 300 more planned. “We have had two commercial fruit seasons, launched a gourmet jam and chutney line created by local chef Peter Wolfe, with other products in the pipe-line, including frozen puree, feijoa balsamic glazes, feijoa hand-made chocolates plus this year we opened our farm to visitors. I can’t think of too many fruits as addictive and healthy as feijoas. If you have had them as a child you can smell their distinctive aroma a mile away, and really crave them. Even though any farmer will tell you it’s hard work, it feels great to be growing a food that fulfils so many needs and makes everyone so happy. We are very glad we’ve persevered through endless rain and knockbacks to achieve sell-out crops and are so proud to be building a new industry in Australia,” conclude Sally and Peter. Feijoas are available at Belmondos at Noosa, The Cooroy Fruit Bowl and Greenacre Organics in Doonan.

The perfumed garden T

he dynamics of growing roses in a sub-tropical climate have changed and the intensely fragranced blooms are eye openers. Have you ever wanted to grow peonies but live in a hot climate? These days you can grow a rose and achieve the same effect and they flower in flushes every eight weeks. “Once in a lifetime we all have the chance to enjoy something really different,” says John Gray from Brindabella Country Gardens, which is two kilometres north of Toowoomba, referring to the Australian release of what is a generational change in roses. “It’s something utterly unique and it has ‘Eyes for You’. This first in a series of Eyeopener Roses is almost beyond the imagination for a rose. Strongly perfumed flowers up to 10 centimetres wide with a beautifully formed eye at the base, literally gaze up at you. Plus it is one of the Blackspot Buster roses, specially breed for low or no blackspot, so you can plant them with confidence. They don't sulk with bad bouts of defoliation caused by blackspot like other roses. They have the vigour to flower more and always look good in the garden. They have a strong, sweet, old rose perfume and are very free flowering, repeating every seven weeks.” Outside Noosa’s John Scomparin is a big fan of roses – understandable as the landscape gardener is an ex Melburnian.

wife nine years ago. It produces flowers year-round and can be relied upon to bloom in February.” Roses are ideally suited to pots, being quite hardy and drought tolerant. That said, you do need to be mindful that the soil in pots will dry out quicker than for roses planted in the ground, so need to be watered accordingly. In terms of care, the main things to attend to are pruning which should be done after flowering, and enhancing the soil with a once-a-year slow release fertiliser. John is also impressed with the variety of Blackspot Buster “My personal favourites include Julia’s Rose, an unusual coffee Roses. “The vibrant colours are very striking, especially the yellow and fawn colour, Just Joey, a hybrid tea rose that has a large, and orange varieties and are able to be incorporated very easily decorative bloom in coppery orange, and Crepuscule with apricot into a sub-tropical landscapes they do not suffer from regular to yellow blooms. It is virtually thornless and is a fantastic climber. bouts of blackspot. This is a huge breakthrough and changes the My own garden features a Valentine’s Rose which I planted for my whole dynamics of rose growing here.

he new AC 378 GT Zagato, is also the latest in a long line of collaborations with the very best British car manufacturers during the Milanese Atelier's 93 years history. These include not only AC but also Aston Martin, Bentley, Bristol, Jaguar, MG, RollsRoyce and Rover. AC and Zagato first cooperated in 1957, creating the AC Ace Bristol Zagato one-off, a pure racing GT Berlinetta today considered an instant classic in the AC model portfolio. It was designed with the typical Zagato doublebubble roof and equipped with a 2 litre inline-6 engine. This sought after car will be back at Pebble Beach 2012 for a special event featuring AC Cars. The AC 378 GT Zagato and the AC Ace Bristol Zagato will be there to celebrate this historic association. After two years of testing, about ten AC 378 GT Zagato pre-production units have been completed in Port Elizabeth, South Africa where the AC 378 Zagato's

manufacturing facility is based. The cockpit's layout is entirely defined by perfectly matching the body's smooth lines, according to the typical Zagato's minimal design cues. Throughout 2011 the AC 378 GT Zagato has undergone heavy track testing in order to optimize handling & performance and maximize the vehicle's response thanks to a very favourable power-toweight ratio. While first deliveries are foreseen starting from mid 2012, AC and Zagato are already conceiving a new roadster concept that follows the tradition of the instant classic roadster. That means a design that is not simply derived from the coupe version but is more in line with the heritage of the classic Cobra. It is expected to be very different from the AC 378 GT Zagato CoupĂŠ. The 378 GT Zagato is powered by a GM sourced 6.2-litre V8 engine tuned to deliver a total of 325kw With a total weight of 1468k, the car will sprint from 0 to 100kph in under 4 seconds and will be capable of hitting a top speed of 297kph. In Europe, the AC 378 GT Zagato will be priced at $137,000 - at the current exchange rates. The coupe version will be immediately followed by a roadster. The AC 378 GT Zagato will be displayed at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours next to the classic AC Ace Bristol Zagato.

Partridge, puddings and Piccadilly...

T

here are many compelling reasons to visit London even in winter, when short days and oft blustery weather produce beautiful light. When it fades and turns to a dark, Dickensian albeit a romantic hue, the cockles of your heart and more are best warmed in museums, theatres, galleries, pubs and swish stores. If you need to make the most of limited time and get a true feel of the old and new, hop on a Big Bus tour and hop off as often as you like to check out historic landmarks such as the Tower of London with its Beefeaters, ravens, Traitor’s Gate and Crown jewels, the mediaeval majesty of Westminster Abbey and Christopher Wren’s masterpiece St Paul’s Cathedral, Marble Arch, London Bridge, the working stables of the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. A trip on the Thames is included in the ticket price with a stop-off recommended at Greenwich, where tea clipper the Cutty Sark has sat in dry dock since 1954 and the Royal Observatory is home to Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian, the line that divides east from west at longitude 0”0’0”. Enjoy views extraordinaire from the world’s tallest observation wheel, the slow-moving London Eye; look out for the Swiss Re building otherwise known as the Gherkin as well as the super tall skyscraper The Shard; be fixated by hedonist’s heaven Harrods, the terribly refined Fortum & Masons, the still absolutely fabulous Harvey Nichols and equally-so Selfridges; amble along the famous Bond, Carnaby, Regent and Oxford Streets, through Soho past the famous Ritz Hotel; and before the blisters start screaming, stop at El Pirata in Mayfair, which serves brilliant tapas and the bill doesn’t give indigestion. Master the Underground with stations such as London Bridge, reached in a snip. Here a culinary adventure awaits. Around 1014 the area attracted traders selling grain, fish, vegetables and livestock but in the 13th century traders were relocated to what is now Borough High Street. Today over 100 traders at the Borough Market sell world-class produce such as geese, gammon, cockerel, wild boar and seafood; truffle cheese and white truffle honey; Moroccan black-stone-in marinated olives; clementines, satsumas, chestnuts and gin additive sloe berries; brussel sprouts attached to their stalk; a wonderland of mushrooms; beautiful loaves, pastries, the sweetest delights; and so much more. After all that salivating and sampling, fortification is a must at Fish which is within the market. What to have? The nation’s one contribution to world cuisine of course - fish and chips. Verdict? The wafer crispy battered, bright white cod, thick-cut chips all soused in malt vinegar plus the mushy fresh peas were sensational.

London’s East End, once shabby and run-down with grimy streets filled with cheeky cockneys and 60’s-style gangsters, has morphed into a trendy artistic and cultural hub with places such as Clerkenwell, so named because of Clerks’ Well, which was rediscovered in 1924. It’s now a mecca for hip hoteliers and savvy restaurateurs such as Bruno Loubet who has the food critics in a whirl at Bistrot Bruno Loubet, where the ambience is buzzy, décor eclectic and a wall of windows look out to St John’s Square. Amongst the chorus of praises for his distinctive modern bistrot food has been: “Bruno’s back with a bang”; and it “is the most exciting comeback since Jesus appeared on the road to Emmaus just after the Crucifixion…” The sheer joie de vivre of Bruno’s menu is evident in every dish. Guinea fowl boudin blanc on winter cassoulet beans shows a deft hand; beetroot ravioli flirts with caramelised balsamic and tangos perfectly with a rocket salad, fried breadcrumbs and parmesan; roasted partridge, fresh choucroutte (Alsace sauerkraut with wine, sausages, pork, and juniper berries), sautéed cauliflower and apple is a sublime classic; and hare royale has Bruno’s rich rollicking moniker. Bruno took London’s fooderati by surprise when he, Catherine and their daughters Laeticia, Laura and Chloe moved to Australia for eight years. “We had heard so many good things about it especially from Stephanie Alexander and decided on Brisbane, which at the time wasn't the culinary scene it is now,” admits Catherine. ”Bruno wasn't the name he was in London but as Bruno’s Tables became established he slowly introduced his better known dishes.” Selling the restaurant enabled him to take up an offer at berardo’s in Noosa where the family also became Australian citizens. The ever-broad-smiling Bruno, who may have grayed around the temples of his thick, black wavy hair, still retains a soft spot for the seaside playground. In the latest Observer Food Monthly magazine he says that Berardo’s Bistro on the Beach is his favourite breakfast haunt in the world. The Loubets intend to move back eventually, however in the meantime the Bordeaux-born technically masterful chef looks happy. As he heads back into the kitchen to oversee potentially another 300 covers, it’s time to float off into the afternoon to our London ‘home’ in its arguably premier location on Piccadilly, across from Green Park in Mayfair. The five-star, family-owned Athenaeum Hotel & Apartments accents its ultra-English style with quirky art that alludes to its long history as host to film industry insiders and other creative types. It really is a luxury hotel like no other with every accoutrement you would expect and in keeping with the best traditions has a Whisky Bar with over 270 choices, a luxe Laduree Pink Afternoon Tea plus a Pudding Parlour. Although ‘up to pussy’s bow’, convivial GM Simon Wakefield’s invitation to indulge in a glass of Taittenger, proved irresistible. C’est la vie.

The French Dog

Sicily, It’s Not Quite Tuscany

by Rachel McKenna, Hardie Grant, $29.95

by Shamus Sillar, Allen & Unwin, $24.99

Rachael McKenna's unique viewpoint has made her one of the most successful animal photographers in the world today. When she recently embarked on a new life in France, it was inevitable that she would turn her insatiable photographer's lens to capturing the unexplored world around her. The French Dog, is the follow up to the successful The French Cat, it includes atmospheric and glowing images of the countryside, buildings and canine inhabitants of France. Rachael's intense feeling for her subject matter positively radiates from her images, delivering a book which is a joyful and uplifting visual tapestry, bound together in an exquisite padded hardcover format. Rachael's beautiful images are accompanied by her own narrative, making this a heartfelt personal record of her journey of discovery.

This is the story of an Aussie couple who sought a Mediterranean sea change only to find themselves in the sprawling Sicilian city of Catania - the 'antiTuscany' of Italy. There, any romantic visions they'd had of restoring a villa or stamping their entwined feet in vats of Chianti grapes disappeared faster than the chief witness in a Cosa Nostra trial. Their tiny apartment in Catania was located in a grim neighbourhood opposite a triple-X cinema and a shop selling coffins, nearby Mount Etna erupted soon after their arrival, a mystery ailment left Shamus in a neck brace, they crashed a Vespa and had regular dealings with at least one Mafioso. It’s a story filled with grit, optimism, humour and so much more.

errie & David are from Melbourne & began their love affair with Peter's work when they came into The Peter Lik Gallery in Noosa in 2004. They have been loyal to Peter's only Australian gallery in Noosa ever since, often commenting that if Peter's Australian collectors want a gallery to remain in Australia then they should always do their business with the Noosa Gallery. Their extensive collection holds some of Peter's most famous work. One of the highlights of their years as collectors came when they went to Vegas last month for the exclusive Grand Opening of the new Mandalay Bay Gallery on Feb 25. Peter was so impressed that they had travelled from Australia to be there. In the following days he made sure they received extra special VIP treatment, arranging for them to be collected from their Mandalay Bay Hotel & chauffeur driven in his new limo to the Head Office where he gave them a personal tour of the printing & framing facility, introducing them to the VIP's behind the scenes.

Travelling North by David Williamson A bittersweet journey into love, tears and laughter... Directed by Steven Tandy

T

his marvelous play will be the first production in the newly refurbished Noosa Arts Theatre. It is appropriate that this play should be chosen because it is one of the best loved plays by the patron of Noosa Arts Theatre, David Williamson. One of its central themes will resonate with those who have "travelled north" to seek a better life in beautiful warm surroundings, but who still have family obligations which take them away from their cherished retirement retreat. Also ill health can shatter dreams of an easy life. How do we struggle to balance family obligations with personal desires and should we keep promises when circumstances change? The main characters Frank and Frances have a twilight love affair and travel north to find a new life together away from burdensome family obligations. Their escape is short lived when family issues and ill health intrude on their idyll. They also score a pesky over friendly neighbour who pops in to their secluded retreat at any time. This is David Williamson in top form with sharp, spiky and witty dialogue in abundance and themes that are at the heart of all our lives, particularly as we get older. This play is being directed by Steven Tandy who is best known for playing Tom Sullivan in the hit TV series The Sullivans. Steven has directed many plays in Brisbane and the Gold Coast and performs regularly on stage and screen. Steven has chosen a very strong cast with Tim Murfin playing Frank and Yvie Somerville playing Frances and with Frank Wilkie, Xanthe Coward, Stephen Moore, Andree Stark and Julia Verburgt in the other roles. Enjoy Travelling North in our wonderfully renovated theatre. No more long wash room queues at interval and a refurbished foyer and patio area. Performances are on April 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 at 7.30pm; April 8 and 15 at 2pm; April 4 is Gala Night Opening. Adult $26, Conc $22, Group $20, Child $15; All tickets to Gala Night on 4 April are $50. CIRQUE DU SOLEIL... is bringing an exciting new show to Australia...

B

risbane has been chosen to host the Australian premiere season of OVO, Cirque du Soleil's critically acclaimed, family-friendly new show, that will be presented under their trademark blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau (big top) at Northshore Hamilton. Since its world premiere in Montreal, Canada in April 2009, OVO has visited more than 15 cities in Canada, United States and Mexico, delighting over 2 million spectators. The Australian tour will be the first time OVO has toured outside North America. OVO, meaning “egg in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life - where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye (and the feeling is mutual). The cast of this high energy show is comprised of 55 performing artists from 14 countries, specialising in many and varied acrobatic acts. One highlight of OVO is the stunning Flying Act, in which a group of scarabs soar high above the stage, from both edges to the middle landing on a platform. This breathtaking act combines many circus disciplines: banquine, Russian swing and swinging chair. Get ready to be inspired, entertained and amazed as the Cirque du Soleil team once again delight audiences around Australia with their flair, ingenuity, skills and finesse. Autumn Art Treasures to find at Buderim Village

T

his Autumn and over the Easter holidays Tiffany Jones Fine Art at Buderim are focussing on quality and beauty with an amazing array of paintings on offer that reads like a “Who’s Who” of the Australian art world. Now on show for art buffs and collectors is an eclectic exhibition of 80 paintings by some of Garry Shead - Black Stockings Oil – 122 x 92 cm Australia’s best known artists which has just been hung in preparation for local and visitors to enjoy over the next few months. Gallery director, Tiffany Jones explains that the focus of this Autumn’s season is the representation of high end works by eminent painters who will be represented by beautiful paintings from their best periods. Collectors with an eye for colour will be delighted to see two large and very striking oils of tropical north Queensland by respected 90-year old painter, Ray Crooke AO, a former winner of the Archibald Prize. One of the most evocative and valuable paintings in the Autumn exhibition is a richly toned work by Garry Shead entitled “Black Stockings” which evokes the sensuality of tango. The suited male dancer guides his female partner on the dance floor and she is dressed in nothing but back suspender stockings! Catching everyone’s eye with its intoxicating colours and immediately visible textures is a magnificent John Perceval still life oil of glowingly golden sunflowers set against a vibrant blue background. Also showing are a fun and very entertaining selection of pastels by the figurative painter Geoffrey Proud which show his highly imaginative character and wit in a series of pastels depicting rabbits in fun antics holidaying at the beach, playing in flower laden gardens, rowing on lakes and whizzing by in high speed race cars! Tiffany Jones Fine Art also specialise in paintings by outback painter and stockman Hugh Sawrey CBE (1919-1999). Aptly portraying the history and people of country Australia, one of the oils by Sawrey “Ah Fong the Green Grocer” depicts a Chinese grocer in his coolie hat arriving in town with his horse driven cart laden with groceries to deliver to townsfolk. Also being the Queensland specialists in art by Norman Lindsay, Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery have a special room in their gallery devoted to this legendary artist and as part of their ever changing display are now showing a sensual oil of a female nude entitled “The Drape” which shows Lindsay’s mastery at capturing the female form. Accompanying the collectable Lindsay oil are also rare watercolours from the 1920’s and 30’s which is the period Lindsay created his best watercolours. Some of these works are illustrated in a well known book featured Lindsay best watercolours. Other highlights of the current showing at Tiffany Jones Fine art include a painting of Orpheus by Charles Blackman, landscape watercolours by Sir Hans Heysen and Albert Namatjira, a wonderful mustering scene by Patrick Kilvington, early charcoal portraits by Robert Dickerson, oils by David Boyd and Pro Hart, sassy new works by Kate Smith and Denise Daffara and a selection of intriguing hand painted trinket boxes by the naive artist Rachel Carmichael. Too see all of this and more, take a trip to leafy Buderim village, which is now celebrating it’s 150th year. Visit Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery, regarded as one of Queensland's most delightful galleries, and then explore the cafes and boutiques, enjoy magnificent hilltop views to the coast and bush walk through the centrally located rainforest to see the beautiful local waterfall. at: www.tiffanyjonesfineart.com.au or call 07-5450 1722. the last word

the last seven years I have travelled the country and the globe promoting Noosa in the first instance and have stressed for years that our link with key places such as Fraser Island, provides a unique point of difference for Noosa plus it adds value. Remember, the Barrier Reef is a 1.5 hour boat ride from Cairns; Fraser Island is a 1.5 hour drive up the beach from Noosa. Both the Barrier Reef and Fraser Island are in the top five most visited destinations in Australia. Everybody associates Cairns with the Reef but Noosa?

the last

word: wade batty Wade Batty

THROUGH CONSISTENT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL MARKETING OF THE DISCOVERY GROUP, WADE BATTY UNDERSTANDS IMPLICITLY THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTRACTING TOURISTS TO NOOSA HOWEVER IS IT IN DANGER OF CHOKING ITSELF AS A DESTINATION? Why did you choose Noosa to set up your business? My perspective on life changed dramatically in the 90s when a mate and I bought a Landcruiser, grabbed our swags, fishing rods and rifles and took off for a year to travel around Australia. On our way back, down the east coast we stopped at Fraser Island and Noosa where I realised I could develop a sustainable business showing people what I love most. I’m passionate about all things Australian - our country, culture, the freedom it provides and every day I relive that feeling seeing the faces of guests returning from a Discovery tour. Our community thrives and survives on tourism however what are some of the major hurdles and how can they be overcome? Noosa’s economy and pure existence naturally relies heavily on tourism. I sat on the board of Tourism Noosa for three years with a view to being involved in the current and future strategic plans of the region, but sadly the majority of my term was focused on repairing and restructuring the fractures in the regional industry. Undoubtedly as an industry, we took our eye off the ball. My feeling is that Noosa is in danger of choking itself as a destination and it’s widely recognised in the broader industry of being quite insular. A mass exodus of outbound tourists doesn’t help either. In my view council has lost its way with how it views our industry. That needs to change and change quickly. The Discovery Group is one of very few that continues to support and promote the region nationally and internationally. In

We should be communicating to the world: Noosa – beautiful one day – better the next!

NoosaStyleLiving

How is Noosa viewed internationally? Fortunately or unfortunately, we have a ‘clean slate’ internationally as we are reasonably new. This offers our destination the opportunity to get it right and start building the brand. It is critical to our forward growth plan as it attracts high yielding clients and spreads the heavy reliance and risk our industry has on the domestic market. We’re also looked upon in these markets as ‘too hard to deal with’ for a variety of reasons such as lack of products willing to be involved and sold through distribution networks, unreasonable length-of-stay periods and rate hikes by some in the accommodation sector at certain periods. The tourism trade will simply not sell or promote the destination heavily until this is resolved. Air New Zealand flying into the Sunshine Coast Airport shows confidence in the region doesn’t it? Success for a destination comes down to three things: Access, Affordability and Attractions. Access is the most critical and we are fortunate to have the airport on our doorstep, however we certainly need to strengthen this asset in years to come with ongoing excellent work by Peter Pallot and others. I would also like to see flights from Cairns and Hamilton Island to bolster our position as a ‘must see’ east coast destination for our international markets. It is great to see the flights from New Zealand being trialled. I hope they succeed and stay. This will assist not only the NZ market but provide a vital link with the US markets as funnily enough the Americans look upon NZ as a must-see on the way to Australia. If Maroochydore can be the link to Australia, that is exciting. The developments at and growth of our airport is the single biggest factor that can assist our industry in the future. Will de-amalgamation help or hinder tourism and better business? Comment re Noosa being smeared with the ‘insular’ tag by many in the industry, is real. I love Noosa but am not convinced that de-amalgamation will have any impact on tourism either way. I truly believe the tourists don’t care or don’t even know. What they do care about is the experience that Noosa offers them. And that is what we need to protect, whether it be within the broader council framework or a Noosa council. We should be communicating to the world: Noosa – beautiful one day – better the next! Tell us about you, your family, business and winning awards. I am a builder by trade and wife Kelly a hairdresser who at 20 owned her first salon, I developed my own construction company at 23 and both of us have a very disciplined work ethic, which I truly believe is built into you. We live in Doonan with William 8, Oscar 5, and Georgia 2, and moved here from Sydney in 2003. In 2005 we began building the Discovery Group, initially under the house at home and today have over 22 staff, two commercial properties, support a national and global distribution network bringing people to Noosa plus we’re continually building a strong brand which promotes consistency, integrity and valuefor-money. Wins include an Australian Tourism Award and we’ve been inducted into the Queensland Tourism Hall of Fame. Recognition has contributed immensely to the company attracting significant commercial investment in our products and the Noosa region.
