Noosa Blue Resort Jazz’s it up... Pugsley Buzzard has a reputation for making ladies sigh and grown men cry. He is a consummate artist, performing hundreds of shows every year, from the jazz cellars of Berlin to downtown New Orleans. So it was a huge coup for the Noosa Blue Resort to garner his talents during the recent Noosa Jazz Festival to dazzle their guests in The Basement. The audience was enthralled by his unique brand of piano driven boogie, blazing stride - and deep, husky voice. J40 Happy 5th Birthday… As the lights twinkled over the Brisbane River and excited guests sipped on cocktails and champagne, Matt Moran was all smiles as he cut into Aria Restaurant's 5th Birthday cake. He and Peter Sullivan invited guests to join their celebration with an evening of fabulous food and camaraderie. The room was divided by an long seafood buffet brimming with all forms of crustaceans, and friendly staff circulated the room with never-ending platters of tempting delights, duck pithiviers, huge sesame crusted prawns, and melt-in-the-mouth wagyu beef to name but a few. It was definitely a night to remember, and guests received a lovely gift of embossed Riedel glasses as a memento of the night.

Artist Julia Carter @ Cool Art Gallery Opening A new Italian adventure… The wine was flowing, the pizzas fresh from the oven and with much fanfare, the new Italian Marina Restaurant has opened up right in the heart of Noosa Marina. Owner Michelangelo Cecconi welcomed guests to sit beside the water and enjoy a little piece of Italy and partake of the delights on offer.

Art and Wine at Coolum… The Art Series Wine launch and exhibition at the Cool Art Gallery in Coolum was a huge success. The man behind the idea of using the talents of local artists, Julia Carter, Michael Whitehead and Warren Salter, to design artwork labels for a boutique wine range from Trentham Estate, Roark Walsh, was there to showcase the wines. With the original artworks on show and the wine bottles opened for tasting, the launch was a winner. Guests enjoying opening night @ Italian Marina

Pizza For Paws…

P

izza for Paws was held at Taste in Brisbane, thanks to owner Jodie MacCauley and the help of a number of Brisbane’s leading food identities. Jodie explained that Fresh Start saves a lot of dogs from regional pounds...as far north as Rockhampton as well as the Sunshine Coast areas. Jodie's own dog was saved by a whisker, as was his brother who now resides in WA with her sister. But, the catalyst for this sold-out event was a pup named “Lucy”, a 10 month old Bull Arab who made headlines recently, as a result of her terrible injuries caused by abusers. In a shocking case of animal cruelty, Lucy sustained fractures to her skull and needed plates to support her two broken front legs after being bludgeoned and left for dead. Her attacker has not been found. “The story touched my heart and I knew I had to do something to help raise funds for this dog’s care,” said Jodie “Fortunately, many food lovers are also dog lovers, so I had plenty of support to get my idea off the ground” Guests enjoyed an all-you-can-eat pizza night made by a Naples

trained pizza chef. The chef and all ingredients were donated by Tony & Gordana Percuoco of renowned Ristorante Tartufo and Wine Bar Emporium. In attendance was Marvin a 1 year old Maremma sheepdog, fostered by chef Alastair McLeod. The well-known Brisbane identity donated his time as a MC for the night and gathered staff from his Alfreshco catering company to assist with the night. “I have been involved in fostering dogs for many years now, and there’s no doubt it’s been an incredibly enriching experience,” said Mr McLeod “If we can get more funds and more foster carers on board the event will be well worth the effort” We would like to thank our wonderful sponsors for the night who supported the event with fabulous food & boutique beverages. And the generosity extended to beautiful items and offers that were donated from kind-hearted animal lovers as part of the charity drive for Fresh Start Rescue. The total tally raised for the night was $ 3,500 For more information on how you can help the extremely worthy non-profit Fresh Start Rescue visit: www.petrescue.com.au

The rural realist... 8

NoosaStyleLiving

Rocking the global arts scene from his little studio in Cooran, Lew Brennan is putting Noosa on the map as a hub of creativity. Having spent the past fifteen years as Noosa’s councillor however, it’s not the only thing he’s done for the area, as Coco Seymour-Griffin discovers.

A former Noosa Shire councillor for 11 years and subsequent Sunshine Coast councillor for four years, Lew is very much a part of Noosa’s beating heart. Having stepped away from politics in recent times in favour of his first love – art – Lew is now forging ahead on the creative scene, basking in rural realism via the stroke of his brush, and gaining some serious traction in the international arts arena in doing do. A Brisbane boy born and raised, Lew had always enjoyed a love of the countryside, moving to Cooran when he was 19 to help work his wife Maurene’s family farm shortly after they were married. It was a different

time and a different place, back then. Noosa was in a development phase and the district was still very much devoted to farming. Dairies, timber, beef cattle, agriculture and horticulture were the staples of the local economy and Lew found himself in his element. With a young family of two boys, Lee and Marcus, Lew revelled in the local community feel, raising his hand for positions on the circuit, becoming president of the P&C at his sons’ school, as well as president of the Pomona swimming club. As a result, it wasn’t long before Lew was quite the figurehead, with those around him calling for his election to council. So in 1997, 20 years after first arriving in the area, Lew finally listened to his champions and put himself in the running. He got in. And so developed an even deeper love affair with his backyard. “It was an immensely exciting time for Noosa,” remembers Lew.“So many things were happening. There was huge potential, and I was grateful to be a part of it.” continues next page...

fter all my years in politics and business, I am as happy as I have ever been,” Lew Brennan confides, exhibiting a humility and softness rarely seen from someone of his standing. “This is what I have worked for my entire life – to focus on creating, and it feels so very good.”

With a hand in the creation of a whole host of successful projects, Lew’s feet hardly touched the ground. Introducing the first economic development policy for Noosa, implementing the first faculty of higher education for Noosa (through Central Queensland University, which resulted in the provision of one of the highest quality educational degrees in Australia as awarded by the Federal government), creating the Bendigo Community Bank in Cooroy, Tewantin and Marcoola (which grew within five years to become the second largest Bendigo Community Bank in Australia), helping form the renowned UNESCO Noosa Biosphere, and opening the $14 million library in Cooroy (the result of ten years of campaigning and hard work), Lew certainly achieved a great deal for the area.

been a more exciting age for a creative. The whole world has a say on my works, which is incredible. And I too can draw inspiration from that global contemporary market. It has blown the picture wide open.

It was not surprising therefore that after fifteen years at the forefront of constitutional life, the time was right for a well-earned rest, as Lew pursued his passion for art.

Having exhibited in America, as well as all over Australia, his pieces are held in collections internationally, with Lew testament to the notion that life is there for the taking, at any age, from any place – even from the tranquil Noosa hinterland.

Delivered to the earth with a pencil in his hand, as Lew claims, he had always been a talent when it came to expressing himself. Selling art by the time he was a teenager, winning prizes such as the Royal National Association award, his interest in artistic realism consumed his thoughts in an era when Australia was fixated on abstraction and representational styles. Progressive? Perhaps. Pre-emptive? Maybe. Either way, Lew nurtured his affection for his art genre, and waited for the world to catch up. And catch up it did. Now, using the landscape and the people surrounding him as his muses, Lew’s interpretation of rural life is causing a ripple on the arts scene – and one that is quickly becoming a wave. “I have been very lucky. In less than two years, I have built my art practice to such a level that I am now working on it full-time. With new media, there has never

“As a result, everything happens much faster and I am more in control of the creative process and my artistic persona, compared to the days when artists were solely reliant on galleries. I now have commissions globally, which is mind boggling.” With an equestrian exhibition taking place at the Manyung Gallery, Victoria, running in parallel with the Spring Racing Carnival currently, Lew is hot off the press, with the industry buzzing over his rise to prominence.

Which begs the question. Now a sought-after artiste of global acclaim, would Lew ever leave his beloved Noosa to feed his passion in the persecuted backstreets of Paris or brightly coloured street spaces of New York? “Never!” he laughs.“Why would I, when I can view the world from paradise? I love it here and look forward to watching Noosa progress further. Support for business across the Shire, support for higher education and an allencompassing community vision – in my view, that’s what Noosa needs to secure its future, with young people and families embraced. But it’s up to the new Noosa Council now. I’m behind the easel with a brush these days, and that’s the way I like it!”

Can Perennial Bachelors change into

Husbands? D. H. Barkley

As one of the most famous bachelors gets ready to take his wedding vows, the question seems rather per tinent. Can perennial bachelors like George Clooney change and become longstanding husbands - able to weather the rough seas that accompany the great times?

R

emember those snippets of advice our mothers offered on our love life? My mother’s wisdom was that you should never marry a longstanding bachelor, as they were set in their ways, too used to getting their own way, and unaccustomed to compromise. But leopards can change their spots, as demonstrated by Warren Beatty who, after a string of relationships with beautiful women, married in his mid-50’s. More than 20 years and four children later, he and actress Annette Bening are still together no small feat in Hollywood. Apparently many a middle-aged bachelor finally decides to settle down as they realise time is running out to fit in a wife and family before the ‘Grim Reaper’ calls. So if my mother’s advice on perennial bachelors is not universally applicable, what do they need for long-lasting love? In the end - they probably just need the same as the rest of us - although it may be harder to achieve when you have been single so long.

Seven All-purpose Ingredients for Long-term Romantic Success... 1. SIMILARITY - Research shows that if we want our romantic relationships to last, we should search for ‘homogamy’ in a partner – that means someone similar to us, particularly in values. Borne out by several studies, showing that similarity between partners for various characteristics, including age, background, intelligence, socioeconomic status, and values predict greater relationship success. 2. REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS - Realistic expectations of our partner and the relationship is another key ingredient for long-term success. It’s important we recognize that no one is perfect, it won’t

16

NoosaStyleLiving

always be plain sailing, and it is quite normal to feel we don’t like our partner from time to time. According to the so-called ‘Disappointment model’, if individuals start out with extreme positive beliefs, disappointment frequently ensues. And such feelings of disappointment do not bode well for the longer term. 3. FRIENDSHIP - Hardly surprising this one ranks as important – after all we will spend plenty of time with that ‘significant other’, so after the first flush of love is over, we need a true friend to weather day-to-day life. According to Franz Schubert, ‘Happy is the man who finds a true friend, and far happier is he who finds that true friend in his wife’. 4. EQUALITY - We need to believe we bring as many desirable qualities to the relationship as our partner. Equality means we have balanced power in the relationship, that we can act independently of our partner’s control, influence their actions, and participate equally in decision-making. 5. COMMITMENT - Commitment is the most powerful predictor of relationship stability. But it’s not about a marriage ceremony - it’s about making the relationship a priority and being willing to sacrifice for it, invest in it, link our personal goals to it, and seek the other person’s welfare, not just our own. It’s about having ties together, such as joint possessions and family, which help keep us glued together during rocky times. 6. UNDERSTANDING - As mentioned in the bestselling relationship book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, many of our relationship troubles start because men and women are more different than we may think. When women have problems we want care and understanding, but our partner offers solutions and resentment builds as we feel we were not listened to. To help solve his problems we try to be supportive by offer comforting, unsolicited advice, but our good intentions make him feel smothered and controlled. Then we have to contend with each other’s cycles. After getting close, men need to feel independent again and become distant for a time, whilst women go up and down emotionally like a Yo-Yo. We need to talk and talk around our problems, whereas men prefer to be alone to mull over solutions in their ‘cave’. 7. CONFLICT RESOLUTION - According to researchers ‘The mere presence of conflict may reveal less about the quality of a relationship than does the way in which the conflict is handled’. Conflicts are normal and inevitable in any partnership, and it seems that mutually satisfactory resolution to disagreements is key to the continued harmony, satisfaction, and even survival of the relationship. And for Mr Clooney and Ms Alamuddin?

She certainly ticks more of the boxes for similarity than many who have come and gone before. But he may need to work hard to ensure they are equal codirectors of their movie, given that he likes to be the ‘guy’ and his fame means that his partner’s identity inevitably becomes associated with him. In the past he didn’t seem to have a big appetite for commitment - it was once said of him ‘In marriage you’re bound by what’s expected of you, he doesn’t want to be expected to do anything’. But he is older and perhaps more ready for the sacrifice and constraints that are key to commitment. As a macho man, he could be quite far up the ‘Martian’ scale, so a good understanding of gender differences could come in handy. And maybe a bright young lawyer is just the ticket to hone one’s conflict resolution skills, given that in his first marriage ‘Instead of figuring out how to make it work, I looked for a way to get out of it. The truth is, you shouldn't be married if you’re that kind of person’. Only time will tell whether George Clooney can change from long-standing bachelor to long-standing husband. Let’s hope so, for their future happiness. To learn more about D. H. Barkley, visit www.clooneythebook.com.

From tragedy to triumph... “While we may not be able to choose what happens to us in life, we can choose the attitude we have towards it. So choose to win,” says Marayke Jonkers. From becoming paraplegic in a car accident to a three-time Paralympian, Marayke’s journey is certainly one of courage and determination, as Coco Seymour-Griffin discovers. arayke Jonkers: Paralympic swimmer, Paratriathlete and now founder of the charity Sporting Dreams. Here is woman who has not only overcome adversity, but has beaten it to a pulp, with relish. “You never know what you can do until you try,” nods Marayke. And it’s true. There are few such believers in this world who chase down their dreams with the unfailing conviction that they will come true. Yet Marayke has done so without a second thought. A proud Sunshine Coast local, Marayke’s love of life and spirit of adventure has seen her smash international records and inspire thousands, fulfilling her potential in a way some of us can only imagine. Having become paraplegic in a car accident when only eight months old, Marayke refused to allow her disability to hinder her success. In fact, quite the converse. Marayke’s resilience and approach towards getting things done is one we all could learn from, as she has embraced her condition and revelled in its challenges.

You never know what you can do until you tr y. When my mother was told I would never walk, she taught me to swim instead. I didn’t notice I was different to other people and I didn’t see a reason why I couldn’t be the fastest swimmer in the world. I figured that the mental pain of training for three years and not being able to compete outweighed the physical pain of continuing.

“When my mother was told I would never walk, she taught me to swim instead,” explains Marayke.“It was the most liberating feeling to be able to move through the water, and I instantly fell in love with the sport. “At the age of 5, I remember watching the Olympics and thought it was magnificent. I, too, wanted to represent my country. I didn’t notice I was different to other people and I didn’t see a reason why I couldn’t be the fastest swimmer in the world. As children, we don’t put limits on ourselves, and there is a lot to be said for that. So that’s what I set out to do.” And set out she did. Training every day as a youth, Marayke attended the Sydney 2000 Paralympic national trials at the age of 19, hoping it would be her destiny to one day qualify. Not only did she get through, she went on to carry the Olympic torch on the Sunshine Coast that year, and so marked the beginning of an incredible sporting career. “To compete at home for my first Paralympics was mind blowing,” smiles

Marayke. “Even living in the Paralympic village was an experience in itself. On a daily basis, I would witness people living differently to me. At the canteen, for instance, there would be athletes holding their knives and forks in their teeth to eat, while the blind would be leading the blind to find somewhere to sit. Yet these people were elite in their fields of expertise. There was an electric atmosphere of possibility. And when the Games finished, I was thirsty for more!” Having excruciatingly lost out to a bronze medal in breaststroke by a thousandth of a second, Marayke had the bit between her teeth, keen to settle the score in her next world event. The Athens 2004 Games was calling, but little did she know how hard it would be. “About eight months before my Athens trials, I woke up and couldn’t turn my neck. I figured it must be a short-term injury and continued to train, but it soon became apparent that this was going to be an ongoing problem. This was a frightening realisation. continues next page...

continued from previous page: “The greatest issue was that I couldn’t lift my head out of the water to breathe. I figured the mental pain of training for three years and not being able to compete outweighed the physical pain of continuing, and so I carried on – training with a snorkel! I wouldn’t be beaten. I even put a sign next to my bed reading ‘Get up for training! This is the Paralympics!’” Physically incapacitated (Marayke could barely move her head by the time the Games came around) and mentally exhausted, Marayke went on to win two bronze medals at the Athens 2004 Games in a huge feat of bravery, beating the Paralympian who had placed her fourth in Sydney, and putting her demons to rest. Even though she was injured, she still managed to be one of the fastest swimmers in the world, in one of the most successful swimming teams to ever compete outside of Australia. So what did Marayke do next? She backpacked around Europe (no easy task in a wheelchair), of course. “Travelling was just what I needed at that point. Skydiving, skiing and camelriding were the order of the day. And when I got back to Australia, I was ready to start training for Beijing.”

Marayke Jonkers: The Believer...

Named Queensland Young Achiever in 2005, and a finalist in the Young Australian of the Year awards, the pressure was on. But Marayke didn’t disappoint. Competing in her final Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008, still injured, Marayke astonishingly took home the silver medal for the 150m individual medley.

Having broken the world record for 100m butterfly, with over 70 Australian records also set for breaststroke, individual medley, freestyle and butterfly over her swimming career, Marayke had made her mark. But it wasn’t over. In 2010, Marayke added to this list by becoming Australia’s first female Paratriathlete and Paratriathlon medallist, winning bronze at the ITU World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. “If you are prepared to do something very hard which others are not prepared to do, you can stand out,” reveals Marayke, sharing her secret to success. After retiring from competitive swimming in 2011 when her condition was finally diagnosed as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (an overuse injury of the upper body), Marayke devoted herself to her charity, Sporting Dreams (sportingdreams.org), helping athletes with disability reach their sporting potential. With the 100th grant awarded this year, Sporting Dreams has made a huge difference to the future of sport in Australia, not to mention the lives of those it has helped, making Marayke a hero in more ways than one. Marayke Jonkers: a shining example that anything is possible. Here is a woman who has not only overcome adversity, but dances on its peak. And there is no other place she would rather be. If you would like to hear more from Marayke, she is available for motivational speaking at www.marayke.com

ecrets Spring/ Summer 2014 collection, Secret Garden, is an enchanting and unique series of exquisite jewellery designs featuring beautiful earthy colour tones inspired by the most classic blooms. The Secrets team wanted to create a collection that captured beautiful, quality fine jewellery designs that complimented this season’s floral trends. Secrets Managing Director Jane Meredith explains “We wanted to inspire women to find their femininity when wearing these vibrant and irresistible designs”. With a touch of modern glamour and vintage style, the collection embraces soft romantic and magical shades of rose pink, pink tourmaline, alexandrite blue and lavender. “We have also introduced a handmade statement necklet The History of Naturalistic Jewels The 19th century was a period of huge industrial and social change, but in jewellery design the focus was often on the past.

In the first decades classical styles were popular, evoking the glories of ancient Greece and Rome. This interest in antiquities was stimulated by fresh archaeological discoveries. Naturalistic jewellery, decorated with clearly recognisable flowers and fruit, was also popular for much of this period. These motifs first became fashionable in the early years of the 19th century, with the widespread interest in botany and the influence of Romantic poets such as Wordsworth. By the 1850s the delicate early designs had given way to more extravagant and complex compositions of flowers and foliage. At the same time, flowers were used to express love and friendship. The colours in nature were matched by coloured gemstones, and a 'language of flowers' spelt out special messages. In contrast with earlier periods, the more elaborate jewellery was worn almost exclusively by women. Available at Secrets (opp Aromas), Hastings St Noosa. www.secrets-shhh.com.

Santa's Classy Helpers… Helping others - one family at a time. This dedicated group of Noosa residents lead by local businesswoman, Lorraine Kenway from Noosa Classy Lady, has been formed with the single objective of making Christmas less stressful for struggling families in the local area. The group supplies them with food, clothing and household supplies that they would otherwise need to purchase. Throughout the year, Santa's Classy Helpers organise functions, where people meet for coffee, lunch or dinner and bring the necessary products along with them to be stockpiles and then distributed to the needy families. The aim is to have enough items to assist approximately 200 families. A member from each of the assisted families is invited to a special Christmas Shopping Day at The J, where they are able to select, at no charge to them, goods that they would like to the value of about $500.00. This Free Shopping Day is held in early December and helps these families to add a little extra happiness to the Festive season. All the products on offer have been kindly purchased and then donated by these wonderful Santa's Classy Helpers. Goods include necessities such as soap, toothpaste, washing powder and cleaning products; pasta, sauces, breakfast spreads, cereals, biscuits, baked beans, as well as toys, skateboards, sporting equipment, fishing rods, tennis rackets, CDs, children's and adults' clothing, Everything is new, which makes the whole shopping experience all the more exciting for the lucky guests. The Santa's Classy Helpers group is able to purchase extra goods that they find 'on special' - such as particular toys, games, towels and nappies with funds provided by the running of raffles and gold coin trails that they organise as part of their various functions. The families assisted are those in our local area of Noosa, Tewantin, Cooroy, Sunshine Beach, Eumundi and Pomona. These families being assisted are those who The Salvation Army, Saint Vincent de Paul, Cooroy Family Support and Chaplains at the local schools have identified as being people who can benefit from this assistance. If you would like to assist with donations for this worthy cause, they can be made at Noosa Classy Lady, 199 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. Designer & boutique owner Di Seith

What women want... Fabulous fashion that is flattering, wearable and affordable is what most women want. Tr ying to find these elusive items is another matter but Di Designs of Australia at Mooloolaba and Noosa Junction has it all.

D

i Designs is the creation of Dianne Seith, a talented stylist who creates her own designs and complements these with the best Australian labels. Di says it’s her mission to find fashions that are subtly flattering. “We choose beautiful fabrics and styles that show every woman to advantage. Mature women want to look sensational without being uncomfortable,” Di says. “I am a reactive designer; I listen to my clients and find the styles, colours and cuts they want to wear. Nobody needs to be a fashion recluse. We can all wear the latest looks and colours with understated elegance. The French call it soignée; it means a certain well cared for style. “My boutique is stocked with an all occasion range. Go casual or dress up, a small collection of

garments will take you through the day and into the evening. Easy care fabrics mean woman can enjoy travelling without worrying about tonnes of luggage and crushed clothes,” she says. Di Designs’ stylish garments and accessories are easy to wear and designed to flatter. Try the beautiful serayas; these adaptable dresses have the luxurious feel of silk, unique designs create casual elegance. Take a few easy pieces and combine dresses, tops and pants for a capsule wardrobe that works at home or on holiday, from the beach or pool to a café, bar or restaurant. Di says her business depends on customer satisfaction. “I work with a wonderful team who understand the importance of service. We have a fantastic range of garments and accessories, women can try on clothes they will enjoy wearing. “They may try a new look or opt for a colour they have never worn before. My team and I work with our clients to give them the service they appreciate and the style they want. It is important that women feel great and look good. We should never become fashion victims or feel as if the clothes are wearing us. “Opening Di Designs in Mooloolaba four years ago was a major milestone for me. I grew up in Melbourne and travelled extensively before settling down on the Sunshine Coast. My first venture into fashion began at Eumundi markets. “I realised the importance of giving people what they want rather than what designers think they should have. With the help of a great team of people I have sustained this philosophy in my boutiques. “Local people and visitors are my regular clients. We aim to please and ensure they return by offering service, advice when asked for and a great range of fashion for every occasion.” Enjoy a the Di Designs shopping experience and find everything your heart desires in the Sirocco Arcade on Mooloolaba Esplanade and on Sunshine Beach Road at Noosa Junction.

Sketa

Australian fashion doyen Adele Pernell is the woman behind Sketa, a leading label in fashion. Adele star ted Sketa in 1987. Her fashion empire expanded to include eight boutiques, a design studio and manufacturing operations.

S

he built her success on a solid foundation having achieved a Fine Arts Degree and a successful design career with two of Australia’s leading companies. Sketa flourished and developed a reputation for producing top quality, original garments. Adele stakes her reputation on beautiful fabrics, exquisite cutting techniques and that indefinable something called style. “We import wool from Italy

and linen from Belgium and some very unusual fabrics from France. “We start with a beautiful fabric, create concepts and design around it. The range is built as a whole. We determine how we want the colours to look for the season, we then look at fabric. We may have special colours dyed for us to ensure everything comes together as a story. “Sketa gives women gorgeous, exciting clothing that feels good to wear. We make a small number of original garments. Every garment is designed, manufactured and finished in Australia. About 80 per cent of Sketa boutique stock is our own label,” Adele says. “Sketa isn’t a mass market product. Women who wear our range know they won’t see dozens of the same design. We create small collections of limited edition individual prints. The Sketa hallmark is quality, style and fit but that doesn’t mean ridiculously high prices. “Savvy shoppers know they can buy a Sketa design for roughly half the price of many advertised designer labels. One of this season’s most popular dresses sells at a little more than $200, a similar dress in a similar fabric by a well know fashion house is more than twice the price. “Sketa caters for women of all ages who want fashion but are not slaves to whims and fancies. Designs are timeless and the quality ensures the garment lasts for years. Smart women calculate the value of fashion at cost per wear. “For example, a dress that costs $200 and is worn 20 times a year for three years works out at a little bit more than $3 per wear. If you pay $200 for a dress that falls apart after wearing it six times it costs $33.33 per wear. Quality always equals value. “We know people are tempted by cheap imported products but we also know they are not good value to the buyer or the country. Sketa is proud to be an all Australian manufacturing company, there aren’t many of us left,” Adele says. Visit Sketa at Noosa and see the latest looks in casuals, knitwear, race wear and mother of the bride fashions.

he Noosa River forms the natural artery through the heartland of the region and provides a haven for safe swimming and waterbased activities. Shady banks provide perfect picnic spots or departure points for leisurely cruises through myriad tributaries, wetlands and lakes that lead to the mystical black waters of the Everglades. Wildlife abounds especially in this protected habitat. Across the river on the North Shore, a four-wheel drive will take you along a pristine beach past the coloured sands of Teewah, the time-worn shipwreck of the Cherry Venture and eventually to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island via a short ferry ride. Closer to Noosa the Noosa Marina is a destination you shouldn’t miss. As the sun rises, it not unusual to see kids sitting on the end of the wharf wishing for more than a tiddler on the line, watching charter boats head to the outer reef for a serious day’s fishing and hoping one day they’ll be old enough to be on board.

peregian beach

Peregian Beach village....

A friendly village atmosphere... Peeking out through the dunes of the striking coastal stretch from Coolum to 13 kilometres south of the Noosa Headland is Peregian Beach. ecognised by a cluster of tall Norfolk Pine trees, and surrounded by National Parks that make up the world recognised Noosa Biosphere Reserve, is Peregian Beach. The Village Square, the heart of the beachside town has interconnecting lanes and pathways to everything and provides a shady area for locals and visitors. Picnic tables designed by Richard Newport are popular with families and friends to enjoy take-out fare from the nearby eateries and for shoppers who are in need of a coffee and momentary respite from retails therapy. Each market day on the first and third Sundays of the month, live music takes over and draws large crowds to the lawn in front of the Peregian Beach Surf Club. "We've built an amazing live music scene here, thanks to some dedicated local musicians who set up Peregian Originals,” says Ange Takats, a Peregian Beach-based author, journalist and musician. “There is no regular community music festival of its kind anywhere else in Australia and this makes me proud as punch.” Just over the sand hills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of wallum heath which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in spring. otted amongst banks and lending institutions, professional, medical and government offices, radio stations, cinema complex, the J, the Junction Station, a transit centre for bus services and within designated shopping areas at Noosa Junction are over 200 businesses. From galleries, specialty and department stores, supermarkets, delis and providores of fresh food, plus restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes, it really is the beating heart of the area. You’ll find everything from bank loans to block busters, stunning jewellery and beautiful boutiques to exciting homewares and gifts-with-a-difference, boogie boards, bikinis and board shorts to baked beans and bargains, shells, cappuccinos and crayfish to cocktail wear and candelabras. Noosa’s hub and central business precinct stretches from the post office and bowls club, along Sunshine Beach Road, into Lanyana Way and is intertwined with arcades, sidewalks and a veritable treasure trove of diverse options and an eclectic mix of shopping, dining and entertainment choices. What a remarkable change from the 50s when according to local Col Wheeler “These were times when Tewantin was better known than Noosa, and the dirt road that joined them, sometimes made travelling dangerous. David Low Way did not exist.”

Colour Blocking

What more can we say. Red, black, blue and white are epic. And believe me - there will be lots and lots of white this season. Also think solid jewel colour dressing with embellishments. Statement dressing is here to stay.

Midriffs are the New Black

Midriffs and cutouts are huge this season - so maybe we'll need to forget about the dessert for a while. There will be lots of flesh on show.

Layering

Loose layers will be mega this season. Wear short shorts under softly draped skirts. From street length - to opera length - to full length. Multi layered designs showing lots of leg. Think Angelina Jole!

Lace

Is everywhere - whether as an embellishment or the total package. From sexy see-through tops and shorts to beautiful full length dresses.

Pastels

Are still a key trend. Choose a beautiful soft palette of sherbet colours, mint, baby pink, eggshell blue, apricot and watermelon. So spring and summer sensitive.

Florals

Think bright shiny fabrics sprinkled with flowers. So beautiful for the Spring racing season, High Teas and garden parties.

Noosa Marina

must go

Relax& Unwind…

Where do you go when the weather starts getting warmer this Spring? I'm heading down to Noosa Wharf, where there is plenty of parking and the boardwalk offers visitors lots of cover from the sun. Then I have the option to do a little retail therapy... shopping at the many boutiques offering customers a plethora of opportunities to purchase flowers, a unique gift, article of clothing, and that special something for a friend or loved one. For those looking for a personal indulgence - there's a day spa for the girls while the boys enjoy a fishing charter, and lots of special wining and dining options are also available.

N

oosa Marina has all this to offer, and you don’t even have to drive here. Your day to relax and unwind starts with a trip on our unique ferry cruise that will gently meander down the Noosa River from either the Sheraton, Hastings St or any of the other stops along Noosaville foreshore. A commentary will enlighten you on the

historic elements and points of interest on your journey, all the while enjoying the warmth of the sun on the top deck with a perfect 360 ˚ view. If you have arrived on a Sunday take some time to stroll around the Sunday markets, of the 65 stalls on offer there are plenty of tempting massages, clothing, exotic items from the south pacific, local artworks and even special creams and oils to resist the aging process. Enjoy a coffee, tea or go all the way with breakfast at any one of the restaurants and café’s on offer. If you arrived later in the day, a glass of wine or beer enjoyed with a lunch of fish and chips while listening to the live music and overlooking the boats gently rocking in the 40 berth marina is a must. There are also lunch and site seeing cruises on offer to enjoy the far reaches of the river. For the ultimate water front holiday our charter house boats can give you piece, quiet and solitude that you may just be looking for, whilst still having access to the best restaurants in town.

Asparagus

Serves: Four Ingredients: • 8-12 thin asparagus spears, woody ends removed • 2-3 tsp olive oil • 1 garlic clove (optional) • Salt and pepper • 8-12 baby Cos lettuce cups • 8 thin wedges of blue cheese • 1/2 cup roasted walnuts

Place the asparagus on a tray or in a large bowl. Combine the oil with the garlic (if using) and add to the asparagus. Using your hands, toss the asparagus to coat with the oil or brush the mixture over the spears using a pastry brush. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Heat a BBQ or grill and cook the asparagus over a medium - high heat until just tender. Immediately remove from the heat to prevent further cooking. Arrange the baby Cos cups on a serving platter (or plates) and place a wedge of blue cheese in each one. Top with the BBQ’d spears and sprinkle with the walnuts.

Tips: This makes a delicious starter or snack. Roast walnuts in a heavy based fry pan over medium heat, shaking pan frequently, taking care not to burn them. Alternatively, Recipe courtesy Australian Asparagus spread walnuts evenly over a baking tray Council www.asparagus.com.au and roast in oven at 175C 10-15 minutes. Try drizzled with a little balsamic glaze available from at delicatessens and supermarkets. Method:

Seasonal availability Australian grown asparagus is available from September to March. Selecting asparagus Look for firm, bright, smooth spears of uniform size with closed, compact tips. When you snap freshly harvested asparagus, it should be crisp, moist and juicy. Storing asparagus Asparagus is best eaten as fresh as possible. If not eating straight away, wrap it in a damp tea towel, pop in a plastic bag and store in the crisper compartment of your fridge. Remember it needs to be kept cool so it’s good to do this as soon as you return home from shopping. Preparing and cooking green asparagus Most green asparagus is ready-togo. Simply snap off the coarse ends with your forefinger and thumb. Alternatively, run a knife along the stalk until it meets less resistance, and then cut the end off at this point. Varieties Green Asparagus is the most popular variety - and therefore the bulk of asparagus grown - in Australia. A small amount of white asparagus, (long been considered a delicacy, particularly by Europeans), is produced to satisfy customer demand. Purple asparagus has a delicate fruity flavour and tender crisp texture. It derives its colour from naturally occurring pigments called anthocyanins (the same pigments that give blueberries their purple/blue colour). When you see purple asparagus appear from mid October to mid November, grab it because supplies are limited. Bunch sizes Asparagus not only comes in a variety of colours, but also in a variety of sizes including the popular 180g standard bunch, 500g bunches of thick spears and 100g bunches of trimmed and ready to eat spears marketed as ‘mini’ or ‘baby’ asparagus. A host of delicious recipes can be found in the Australian Asparagus Council’s Recipe Library.

tastings Local restaurants and cafes are welcoming Spring with new menus designed to celebrate the season's finest offerings. Continental Café… I was sitting sharing a cup of coffee with Wendy at Wendy & Hollys in Noosaville recently, when a friendly, Continental Café representative walked through the door offering us a tantalising choice of fresh salads for lunch from her cane basket! Loving the initiative of this Noosa Junction eatery. They are now visiting local businesses offering daily fresh salads in glass jars. And you get to keep the handy check-topped jar as well! Embassy XO… Loving the new menu designed by exec chef Joo Kim, and the subtlety he shows in all his dishes at this popular Sunshine Beach restaurant. Diners can also enjoy a weekly changing, special 3 course 'locals' menus on Tuesday and Wednesday nights with 'special' price wine to complement. We recently attended their Duck Lovers Dinner where guests were treated to a stunning 4 course dinner with matching wines that pitted Victoria against Tasmania! On arrival guests enjoyed Josef Chromy NV Sparkling, before being seated for the gastronomic affair. 1st course was a Duck neck dumpling, bean shoot and duck soy consommé with 2013 Stonier Chardonnay. 2nd course: Crispy duck breast, kumquat, grape and Patchun sauce with 2012 Stonier Pinot Noir. 3rd course: Tea salted duck leg, sesame horfun, wokgreen and spiced chilli broth with 2012 Josef Chromy Estate Pinot Noir. - 4th course: Duck egg brulee, walnut rum paste and berries with Stanton and Killeen Muscat. What a night. Can't wait for their next wining/dining event. Italian Marina… All that's missing is the Vespa.

A little bit of Italy has arrived at Noosa Marina with the opening of the all-new, Italian Marina Pizza - Restaurant. With the addition of a 3 tonne pizza oven the restaurant is providing diners with a taste of Italy - 7 days a week. Diners can delight in jugs of Sangria, wines and beer enjoyed on the deck with freshly made pizzas delivered straight from the searing heat of the huge white pizza oven, handmade pastas, salads, bruschetta and share plates that will make Spring dining a pleasure. Florence-born owner, Michelangelo Cecconi is now a local Tewantin resident who thrives on the local landscape of calm waters and fishing boats that front his marina boardwalk location. Drop by for your little taste of Italy. River Cottage… Chef Marc Wohner is always tweaking his menu to showcase the season's finest produce. One of his menu's new offerings is an entree of Braised Eumundi veal shank tortelloni, pea puree, mushrooms and leeks.

River Cottage

Thomas Corner Eatery… Has launched its new spring menu with offerings that celebrate the season's bounty. Try the entree of Raw fish (on this occasions Kingfish), radish, finger lime and green mango with lime and ginger juice. Also Jason's smoked fish (on this occasion Trout), crispy dutch creams, horseradish, radishes and beetroot. Bohemian Bungalow… This is Eumundi's answer to Byron Bay. A fabulous piece of paradise offering diners a haven from the mundane. More than a café, it's a new twist on a restaurant/bar - this dining precinct offers a tantalising menu designed by head chef Bryce Davis, for breakfasts, luncheons, morning or afternoon teas and dinners. It's a magical place for a wedding or special occasion - almost any reason you can think of to enjoy the ambient open-air charm of this magical eatery. And with Spring upon us, the tranquil garden area with its tinkling water feature is the ideal al fresco setting for shared dining at lunchtime or sunset. Village Bicycle… Loving the vibe. Everyone is talking about the friendly ambience of this casual little eatery in Noosa Junction. With a menu designed for casual dining, delicious burgers, tempting tacos and share plates to enjoy with a cold brew and good friends, this is an eatery sure to delight.

Brisbane Good Food & Wine Show … Get up close and personal with your favourite chefs at this much-loved three day foodie event.

N

ow in its 10th year, this year the theme is showcasing undiscovered local food labels from around Queensland with the creation of a new Local Artisan Alley. There will be lots of local produce and samples available to tempt you, whether you love to cook, want to be the next Master Chef or just want to be inspired by something new; this is your opportunity to gather recipe ideas, sample new products and old favourites, and talk to the producers about the best way to cook their products. This year visitors are also invited to support their local producers and vote for their favourite Qld food or wine labels as part of a project Local Labels We Love. There will be cooking and wine masterclasses to attend and celebrity chefs onhand to pass on their expertise. This year they include Matt Golinski, Matt Moran, Maggie Beer, Adriano Zumbo, Alastair McLeod, Matt Stone and Sammy & Bella (My Kitchen Rules Series Two winners). Regional Heroes class description: Australian winemakers aren’t constrained by archaic dogma, they can plant what they want, where they want it. This masterclass will explore the ‘hero’ varieties of a region, a variety that has excelled over time in a region and in turn the region has become synonymous with that variety, almost ‘Appellation Australia’ if you will. This year the event will run at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre in Southbank, Brisbane from October 17 - 19 . H

is journey started at the age of nine, when his digestive system began ‘rebelling’ and he couldn’t eat meat, wheat, dairy, processed foods and sugar. Scott’s body was unable to break down proteins properly so his body rejected them as soon as he ate; a symptom know as gastric reflux. The family doctor had no idea of the link between meat protein and his stomach’s inability to break it down. Not surprisingly at an early age he began to doubt mainstream medicine. He also found that doctors generally were predisposed to look at the symptoms Scott suffered and treat those rather than find the cause of the ill health. Visits to a naturopath also proved unsuccessful. The catalyst to finding a solution to his ill health was two ‘near-death’ experiences. On both occasions, during sleep, the contents of his stomach flowed into his lungs. Each time he dreamt that he was choking, and thankfully woke myself up. While researching online, he read about the proteolytic (protein hungry) nature of the enzyme papain, which is derived from green papaya. I tracked some down, in its dried form, and began using it. The first night he took a level teaspoon dissolved in water and was able to lie completely flat for the first time in years and without a bout of reflux or discomfort. With prolonged daily use of the green papaya his symptoms began to disappear. Papain seemed to make the gut muscle stronger and less prone to the influences of poor food. Scott felt more and more comfortable in his stomach and knew he was onto something. Researching what a RAW food lifestyle might look

like. he already had a comfortable relationship with fruit and vegetables, then several years ago decided to commit to a 100 per cent RAW plant-based lifestyle. Choosing to replace old nutritional habits based on meat, wheat, dairy, processed foods and sugar. Scott removed from the pantry any foodstuffs that weren’t ‘alive’, meaning all wheat, dairy and processed foods, and threw the lot out. In their place he worked out a new diet formula that could be comfortable eating based on his research. Scott wanted a new lifestyle to be 100 per cent comfortable to maintain. Finding the new eating habits did not have to be difficult to put into practice just because he was choosing NOT to eat from troublesome food categories and neither did it have to be difficult to source the foods he choose to eat. “Using my food knowledge to prepare some of the tastiest food I have ever had the privilege to take into my body, including beautifully prepared fruits and vegetables, capturing the sweet, sour, salty, crunchy and creamy attributes of locally grown or sourced produce” says Scott. “Each month I open my Noosa home to a dozen guests and I prepare a seven-course RAW food meal for them, showing them each step of the recipe preparation process.” What is a RAW plant based lifestyle? RAW food means any plant food such as fruit or vegetables, including sea vegetables such as wakame or dulse, as well as nuts and oils. Eating a RAW food diet literally means that the food that you choose to put in your body is not cooked in any way’. When you eat RAW plant-based food, your body receives 100 per cent of the nutrients in the fruit and vegetables. Those nutrients ultimately enter the blood stream and I believe that the quality of my blood determines the healthy efficiency of my body – plain and simple. When food is cooked, its structure is changed. Much of your food’s nutrients are therefore lost or compromised when cooked. Most of the enzymes present in foods are destroyed at temperatures as low as 115F (42.5C). These food enzymes aid the digestive process and become active the moment food enters the mouth the initial digestive process begins when we chew food). Eating enzyme-depleted food causes the digestive function to ‘stall’ and may create a state of trauma as well as reflux, bloating, indigestion and heartburn. In general RAW food is much easier to digest, passing through the digestive tract in half to a third of the time it takes for cooked food to make the same transition. The age-old wisdom uttered by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, ‘Let food be thy medicine – medicine be thy food’ is true. I healed myself as a result of the food I began to eat. Extract from Let’s Eat RAW published by New Holland Publishing and available at all online and offline bookstores as well as scottmathiasraw.com

Fatoush is a classic Middle Eastern dish that is easy to make with easily accessible RAW ingredients. Use your Sunny Seed Bread as the alternative to the more usual fried pita bread. Ingredients: 6–8 Sunny Seed Bread snacks (see recipe Let’s Eat Raw) 6 cherry tomatoes, halved 1 red or Spanish (Bermuda) onion, roughly chopped 1 teaspoon sumac powder 1 Lebanese cucumber, roughly chopped 3/4 cup mint leaves 1 cup parsley, roughly chopped ½ cup coriander (cilantro), roughly chopped 3 garlic cloves 3. fl oz (100 ml) olive oil Juice of 1 lemon Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Method: Place the cherry tomatoes, onion, cucumber, mint, parsley and coriander into a bowl. Sprinkle the sumac powder over these ingredients. Season with salt and pepper. Add the small bite-size pieces of seed bread to the salad and stir through. In a mortar and pestle, grind the garlic with the salt into a fine paste. Then add lemon juice, olive oil and pepper. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Pour over the salad mixture and gently mix together. Tip: If you do not have a mortar and pestle then use a small blender to blend spices. Leave to sit for a few minutes to allow the garlic and salt to infuse through the liquid before pouring over the salad.

Leogate Estate Wines “Len Evans would be delighted. His favourite vineyard has been honoured as having produced the grapes for the World’s Best New Wine” say Bill and Vicki Widin of Leogate Estate Wines and Brokenback Vineyard. The 2014 International Wine Challenge in London, recently awarded the James Rodgers Trophy for the Best Wine in its First Year of Production to Leogate Estate’s 2011 The Basin Reserve Shiraz. When accepting the award at the gala dinner, Bill and Vicki Widin attributed the Trophy both to Len Evans’ attention to detail in establishing Brokenback Vineyard, and to Mark Woods’ superior winemaking skills. The Basin had earlier also been awarded the Trophy for the best Hunter Valley Red Wine. Leogate Estate’s Brokenback Vineyard in Pokolbin was one of Len Evans’ Rothbury Syndicate vineyards planted in the 1960’s. The Shiraz vines are all original, and situated on a low hill with direct east and west facing blocks. A substantial section of the east facing blocks is known locally as 'The Basin' and forms somewhat of a natural amphitheatre. The vines there are protected from much of the Hunter Valley late afternoon summer sun, and have developed over the years rather differently from the vines on the west facing blocks - primarily by being more luxuriant in both vine size and canopy. This difference in the vines is entirely environmental, and results in a slightly different berry taste.

Mark Woods, to his eternal credit, noticed this difference and for the 2011 harvest decided to keep separate the parcels he selected from each east and west section, to be the 2011 Shiraz Reserve wines, naming the two parcels The Basin and Western Slopes. The London judges described the 2011 The Basin as “refined, cool Shiraz style with bright fruit, savoury notes, supple tannins and great drinkability. Lovely freshness on the palate which lifts and lengthens the overall flavour”. The judges also described the Western Slopes, for a Silver Medal, as “sweet, ripe berries and vanilla on the nose. Peppery, roasted flavours with a concentrated great length and well balanced tannins”. James Halliday in his 2014 Australian Wine Companion gave the 2011 The Basin 96 points and a cellaring date of 2050, and gave the 2011 Western Slopes 97 points and a cellaring date of 2060. Although only recently bottled, Leogate Estate’s 2013 The Basin and Western Slopes Reserve Shiraz are already magnificent drinking and have outstanding cellaring potential. Brokenback Vineyard had a great season for the 2014 vintage, and both wines in barrel look very good at this stage. Leogate Estate Wines are distributed in Australia by Estate Wines and available through the Leogate Estate website and Cellar Door. angria is as Spanish as paella or a sensual flamenco dance - and the perfect drink for the upcoming party season. W

hen Grant Burge and his Chief Winemaker, Craig Stansborough prepared the 2012 vintage summary, they agreed 2012 could potentially be a benchmark year for the Barossa. In the same year, they also decided to upgrade the packaging on the Grant Burge Vineyard Range to truly reflect the super premium nature of these classic Grant Burge Wines. “I am so proud to be releasing these ‘new look’ amazing red wines from such a memorable vintage. Looking back for comparisons, 2010 was terrific for most reds, 2006, 2004, 2002, 1999 and 1998 all have their highlights, but for consistency of quality across all of our varieties, 2012 really tips the scales”, Grant said.

2012 Hillcot Merlot | RRP $24.75 Grant Burge was a pioneer of Merlot in the Barossa Valley, planting the Hillcot vineyard in 1982. Named after one of the villages in Wiltshire where his ancestors came from, the Hillcot Merlot continues to be one of Australia’s top selling Merlot’s. The exceptional ripening conditions in 2012 have produced a deep red Merlot with concentrated flavours of red berries and sweet mocha with a long fine grained tannin structure.

2012 Daly Road Shiraz Mourvèdre | RRP $24.75 Daly Road runs alongside Grant’s vineyard of the same name. Areas of the Barossa have deep red, sandy loam soils, perfect for producing finely textured wine with great complexity. Shiraz and Mourvèdre thrive in the region, where the finesse and character of the south of the Barossa shines. The near perfect ripening conditions in 2012 have produced a wine with an exceptional fruit flavour profile made up of 78% Shiraz and 22% Mourvèdre.

2012 Cameron Vale Cabernet Sauvignon | RRP $28.00 When Grant’s mother’s ancestors migrated to Australia,

they left behind a property called Cameron Vale. It seemed fitting to name a wine and a vineyard after the prized property. This rich, supple and complex Cabernet Sauvignon has a lovely array of blackcurrant and dark fruit aromas, with a generous and elegant palate of cassis and dark cherries finishing with fine, savoury tannins.

2012 Miamba Shiraz | RRP $28.00 The Miamba Shiraz and the vineyard of the same name, has a long viticultural history; however when Grant purchased the property in 1983 it was completely bare. Careful planting and sustainable practices has returned this block to its former glory. This elegant full bodied Shiraz has concentrated flavours of spiced plums, blackberries and pepper all perfectly interwoven with savoury, silky tannins and a long finish. The 100% European oak provides a refined structure to the wine and with careful cellaring this wine will age gracefully for up to 10 years. The Grant Burge Vineyard Selection is distributed by Burge & Rathbone Fine Wine Merchants 1300 853 544 or orders@ brfwm.com.au and is available in restaurants and fine wine stores nationally.

ANGUS... Primed to Perfection Welcome to a whole new era of The Bull. Approaching its second decade with more brightness and vibrancy than previous vintages, the 2012 Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon is the first vintage produced exclusively from Central Victorian fruit. This marks the 11th vintage of the Cabernet Sauvignon created by winemaker Hamish MacGowan to provide the ideal accompaniment to prime beef. And while his 2012 Bull is notably more poised than in previous years, he is eager to reassure fans that the wine they know and love has not evolved beyond recognition - it’s just a little more sophisticated. This very bright and fresh wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from Central Victoria (58%), Goulburn Valley (28%) and the Strathbogie Ranges (14%). It exhibits lovely varietal characters of ripe black fruits with rich dark chocolate and vanillin smoky aromas. A medium to full-bodied palate weight is characterised by firm tannins and a savoury, masculine finish. The resulting 2012 Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon is the most food friendly example that MacGowan has made to date and could be considered an even more appropriate evolution of his signature food matching with beef proposition. 750 ml – RRP $19.95 per bottle; 375 ml – RRP $12.95 Available nationally at independent fine wine retailers, Vintage Cellars and First Choice wine retailers.

he original hotel at the corner of Etheridge Street and Memorial Drive in Eumundi has been a focal point in Eumundi on and off since 1911. The property was reborn in 1926 after a major fire and over the years seen several revamps. Now renamed and reborn as The Imperial Lionheart Hotel, it has now been lovingly restored by new owners Caroline and Michael Arnett. Caroline planned the uniquely British concept and design to give local people and visitors a great venue with a traditional yet modern English pub theme and feel. Caroline says they were sympathetic to the heritage and worked with local craftsmen and local products to ensure its place in history. “The Lionheart – named in honour of King Richard the Lion Heart - is not a Heritagelisted property but we wanted to make it special,” she says. “We started with an idea based on a heritage and conservation report as well as a selection of original photographs. We used local hardwood throughout and added a few inspired touches - huge glass entry doors, comfortable seating around a central fireplace, upholstered booth and table seating, lots of fretwork and wide open windows. The Fleur de Lys emblem is burnt into the floors and the solid timber and glass entry doors bear the royal crest.

The bistro has already gained a reputation for great food and generous servings. Kids are welcome and there is a play room so parents can relax while they enjoy a meal and a drink. W

e are pleased to present two opulent residences within prestigious “The Enclave” gated estate in Noosa Heads. This is the first time the properties have been presented to the market, and are part of a very limited release of residences eight and eleven. Suited to permanent living, both properties have been finished to an impeccable standard, with suspended concrete floors, plush hardwood throughout the living areas and state-of-the-art kitchen appliances. No. 8 is the larger of the two, sprawling across 380sqm of under roof living space, including an oversized garage with two separate storage rooms and the capacity to hold up to three cars. Entry into the property is via a pivot door into the foyer, where a light filled void reaches up to the second level, from where a striking pendent light hangs. Open plan living zones envelop the beautiful kitchen and open on to a large balcony via bifold doors. Banks of timber louvres open to enhance the natural air and light flow. cabinets and self-closing drawers, provisions for a plumbed fridge and an array of Miele appliances, including a five-burner cooktop, are on offer in the kitchen. Towards the rear of this level is a spacious media room, with nearby access to the main bathroom. All of the bathroom and ensuites throughout both properties feature marble vanities and floor tiles – no expense was spared in the development of these properties. This level has a well-equipped laundry, with a stone benchtop and laundry chute from the upper floor. Access to the upper level sleeping quarters is via the lift from the garage of first floor, or the timber lined staircase. All three bedrooms are of generous size; including the master retreat with its own lavishly appointed ensuite with spa, wellequipped walk-in robe and separate retreat/home office. The room opens on to a balcony with views across to the hinterland, which only get better when you access the rooftop terrace. The remaining two bedrooms on this level have built-in robes, balcony access and nearby access to the second bathroom.

No. 11 is a smaller version of No. 8, and only set over two levels, as opposed to three. “The Enclave” is accessible via RACV Resort, Noosa Heads, and as part of living within the gated estate owners have access to the resort facilities. While both residences feature their own private plunge pools, The Enclave has its own heated pool and barbecue facilities, plus residents can access the resort’s lagoon style and beach entry pools, with children’s water splash park. The resorts spa and restaurants are within meandering distance, and it’s not too much further to Noosa Junction and Noosa Farmers Markets, which are held at the AFL grounds each Sunday. All of the garden maintenance is done through the body corporate, which makes these ideal for a “lock-up and leave” style of accommodation. Also, given its proximity to the resort and use of those facilities, it would be suitable for holiday letting. Featuring: • 3 bedrooms • 3 bathrooms • 2+ carspaces

Pieces of the puzzle: finding or creating the right inclusions Once you’ve edited and made sure all your finds suit your brief, the mood, the budget and reflect your style, then, and only then, can you buy the pieces you’ve found. Having a sensible, detached view of purchasing things will really be beneficial and can also give you time to deliberate on price, and perhaps even to work out a negotiation tactic to get a bargain here or there. If you find a piece has gone by the time you go to buy it, it was not meant to be. Don’t fret, just find another option: use your reference as your guide and be sure to look at all your intended purchases together, in one Pinterest board or scrapbook so that you can see they all work harmoniously. This is the only way to achieve a congruent look. You don’t want to end up with a house full of beautiful things that don’t get along. EASY LUXURY An expert guide to creating your perfect home By: Darren Palmer Published by: Murdoch Books $39.99 Renowned Australian designer (and wellknown judge on The Block), Darren Palmer shares his insider’s knowledge to help you get the most out of a space with luxe results. Lavishly illustrated with photographs of Darren’s own interior design projects, ranging from apartments to larger family homes, it provides key styling ideas to create a big impact for a realistic investment of time, energy and money.

Renowned Australian designer (and well-known judge on The Block), Darren Palmer shares his insider’s knowledge to help you get the most out of a space with luxe results.

Rooms for consideration I always get nervous when people ask me for their opinion on their home and I’m confident those same people get nervous when having me into their homes for exactly the same reason. This may be why I don’t get many dinner invitations. That or my table manners need some work, but I’m going to choose to believe it’s the former. The reason I hesitate to offer an opinion when I’m in someone else’s house is because people tend to really want you to like what they’ve put together in terms of the inclusions and layout, but quite often I see the same old issues played out time and time again, taking the shimmer off otherwise lovely spaces. With a view to making myself more comfortable by spreading the word so everyone can mend the errors of their ways, here are my thoughts on key points, room by room, for your consideration.

The book moves from large-scale practicalities and planning through to the elements of design, and takes a detailed look at styling room by room (and the goals, opportunities and potential pitfalls involved). Whether you are styling a new home, getting a property ready to sell, or simply redecorating, Easy Luxury provides expert design tips and solutions for creating a home that encompasses a luxe, designer aesthetic while still embodying comfort.

A CHANCE TO WIN! We have 3 Darren Palmer’s EASY LUXURY coffee table books to giveaway. To enter send an email with your name, address & phone no to WIN@NoosaStylemagazine.com.au. Winner notified by email 15th November 2014, Good luck!

Aussie Design Winner... The spotlight is on Australian design, with Melbourne-based Adam Cornish winning the prestigious 2014 New York Design Awards recently. Adam’s Trinity bowl designed for Italian based company Alessi, received first prize in the homewares category, putting Australian design back on the global map. Trinity bowl was born from self-initiated research into lightweight structure of the Nautilus shell. “Each year the Nautilus adds an extra chamber to its shell, a process that eventually forms a beautiful spiralled structure that is strong yet very light in weight,” says Adam. “My aim was to create a hybrid product that was not only visually inspired by nature, but also a product that uses the inherent logic of nature.” In conjunction with New York Design Week, Adam is among top leading industry experts selected to showcase his designs through the “Alessi Research Lab’ initiative, as part of the WantedDesign 2014 exhibition. The workshop displayed a selection of projects that highlight a specific topic and the related research developed around it; ranging from research in the working of metal wire by Pauline Deltour, LED lighting by Giovanni Alessi Anghini through to nature observation based design by Adam Cornish. Platform 72 - Mr Wolf Clock… Designer Lachlan McLaine had always been fascinated by machines and in particular, timepieces. It occurred to him that there was a possibility for a radically different type of flip clock - and he set about creating Mr Wolf. The artistic images on the clock are a mix of photographs, collages, old paintings, propaganda posters and computer-generated graphics – and each image represents a number. “I drew inspiration from numbers I found around Sydney, different numbering systems (including Roman numerals and binary), and art and imagery that I found beautiful, intriguing or funny. Many of the hour designs reference the time of day: 3am is dream-like and surreal, 8am is a cheery suggestion to embrace the day, the sun takes a starring role at 1pm, while a map of the stars comes out at 10pm. For the minutes I often drew inspiration from the numbers themselves, referencing common associations or setting little puzzles: Churchill’s ‘V’ for victory sign becomes 5, an unlucky black cat appears at 13, Sydney’s line of latitude on a map is 34, Brisbane’s XXXX brewery sign is 40, and – one for the plane-spotters – 52 is represented by a flying B-52.” Available in-store and at www.platformstore.com.au. RRP $180.00 – available in black, white and red.

limited outdoor space due to increasing pressures of urbanisation, the popularity of the outdoor room is growing rapidly and Hodges predicts it will become the most valued room in the house. “The outdoor room is the most versatile room in the house and there has never been a better time to invest in yours,” he explained .“Not only can an outdoor room increase the value of your home, but the health benefits of spending time outdoors are undeniable. The backyard is quickly taking over as the favourite gathering space for cooking, entertaining, relaxing and spending time with loved ones.”

TV landscaper Justin Hodges Increase the value of the home.. The outdoor room can provide a major contribution to the value of your home investment and property sales research has shown that spending 5% per cent of your home’s value on quality, low maintenance landscaping could increase the resale value of your home by up to 15%. It can also increase the speed of resale by as much as six weeks. A recent survey of homeowners found that Australians are using the outdoor area of their home far more frequently than any other room in their house for entertaining and relaxing. When asked how much a well-maintained outdoor entertaining area could add to the overall value of a property, 47% of respondents felt it could increase the price by up to $20,000.

is your outdoor space...

Creating the perfect outdoor room for your family... “The beauty of the outdoor family room is that it can be anything you want it to be; you are only limited by your imagination,” Jason said. “Whatever size outdoor space you have, there are countless ways to create an exceptional room to entertain, relax and spend time with family.” Jason offers some tips on creating the most impact in your outdoor family room:

Paving Paving is the foundation for a good outdoor room. It sets the theme for the whole space and can determine the look, feel, colour palette and much more. Coloured concrete pavers can completely transform the look and feel of any space. Pavers are available in a range of shapes, sizes, colours and prices to help create the outdoor family room of your dreams. The opportunities with paving are endless and can create a big impact in a small area. Water feature Introducing a water feature to the outdoor room can enhance the aesthetic appeal of your space. There are some fantastic water feature options on the market today. Water features can also serve a functional purpose such as blocking out noise from traffic or neighbours, and add a peaceful ambiance to the garden. A stone feature wall will add some texture and make a water feature pop making the greatest impact. Furniture selection Choosing the right furniture is imperative to maximising time spent in the outdoor room. Start by considering your lifestyle and how you anticipate the room will be used. Lounges and deep seaters are perfect for those who like to relax, whereas dining settings are best for those who love long family meals. Furniture selection can even facilitate conversation and increase social interaction. Choose pieces that encourage togetherness, pieces that are multi-functional, flexible and can be easily moved around to create an alternative setting for parties and get-togethers. An outdoor family room with seating facing each other will create an environment where conversation and interactivity will thrive.

eter’s landscape art is positioned at a very select end of the photographic marketplace, consistently receiving national and international acclaim. Born in 1959, in the outback town of Broken Hill he now lives in Noosa with his wife, two cats and seven chickens (at last count). Originally self-taught, learning the technical side by reading all the literature he could lay his hands on from second hand book shops, libraries, magazines and now the web, he is always seeking that illusive art book, painting, sculpture or painting to deepen his understanding of his craft. Peter invests countless hours in the creation of unique masterpieces. It is from this synergy of instinctive flair, craftsmanship, and Peter’s soulful interpretation of light that unreservedly unique masterpieces of true exclusivity and genuine character emerge. Peter only produces one original image from any particular landscape - normally photographers sell many copies of a print. With Peter’s art any purchaser is guaranteed that they own the original. There are no limited edition print runs – the print is authenticated as 'One of One'. Peter is the only accredited Australian landscape artist whose work is authenticated by Art Trust, an international certification and authentication system to value artworks. Peter has established ‘Gallery 734’ in Noosa, in his award-winning, architecturally designed gallery, where he showcases the original art on display and provides an ideal setting for visitors to the region to view his internationally acclaimed art. What you see is what you get with Peter; art is at the core of his life.

ndian Motorcycle, America's first motorcycle company, has announced the launch of the all-new Indian Scout; a contemporary yet classic interpretation of one of motorcycling's most famous and coveted bikes. With a DNA that will appeal to riders of multiple skill sets and abilities, the new Scout was unveiled at the 2014 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, USA, and will arrive in showrooms later this year. One of the lightest bikes in its class at 253kg, the all-new Indian Scout was derived from a clean sheet design, creating a potent and precise middle-weight cruiser that continues the spirit of innovation that made it one of the most storied bikes of all time. It is the first truly new Indian Scout in more than 70 years, and marks the return of the legendary bikes that conquered the infamous Wall of Death and carried the legendary Indian Wrecking Crew motorcycle race team to multiple victories. A 1920 Indian Scout earned the title of the 'world's fastest Indian' as proven by Burt Munro in 1967 and technology and designs derived from Scout models played a significant role for Allied Forces in World War II. Boasting advanced technologies, design and engineering innovations, it offers lightweight and rigid cast aluminium frame coupled with a low 642mm seat height for

exceptional comfort, balance and manoeuvrability, making it appealing to riders of sizes and experience levels. Powered by a liquid-cooled, 100 HP V-twin engine, the all-new Indian Scout is powerful yet approachable - the high horsepower and superior handling will thrill even the most experienced riders. "Over the course of 30 years of countless innovations, racing wins, world records and industry firsts, the Scout earned its reputation as a versatile, multifaceted bike that appeals to just about every rider and every riding style, with superior handling, balance, performance and craftsmanship," said Peter Harvey, Indian Motorcycle Australia Country Manager. "Our designers and engineers have taken that heritage and those characteristics and fused it into the 2015 Indian Scout, and we think just about everyone who rides this incredible bike is going to feel like it was built just for them." The 2015 Indian Scout will arrive in Indian showrooms around the country in the fourth quarter of 2014 for a Recommended Ride Away price of $17,995 and is backed by Indian Motorcycle's two-year unlimited-kilometre warranty. Designed for the track; developed for the road

T

he connection between Formula 1 and road cars at McLaren is a natural process of experience, knowledge, principles and process transfer. Through the integration of 50 years of Formula 1™ racing expertise and knowledge, and over 20 years of heritage in producing landmark sports cars, McLaren Automotive designs, develops and builds a range of technologically advanced and groundbreaking high performance sports cars which are designed to be a no compromise drive on both road and track. The bodywork is ‘shrink-wrapped’ around the carbon fibre MonoCage chassis behind the front wheels, and is designed to channel the air from around the wheel well. An additional aerodynamic blade is located behind the wheel-arch to clean the air from the front tyres. This aero device flows

seamlessly along the bottom edge of the dihedral doors, along the flank of the carbon fibre bodywork, to an additional side panel at the rear which ducts additional air into the high temperature radiator and improves the aerodynamic performance of the rear floor. The profile of the McLaren P1™ GTR design concept remains as dramatic as ever, hunkered down on to the race-prepared suspension with a fixed ride height, lower than the standard car. The snorkel air intake, inspired by the design of the original McLaren F1, is still present within the roof structure of the carbon fibre MonoCage chassis. The wing mirrors have been repositioned to the A pillars, to put them closer to the eye line of the driver and reduce aerodynamic drag, while the trailing edge of the door-mounted radiator channels have been

extended to draw more air down through the cavity within the door, and into the engine to aid cooling. A set of lightweight 19-inch motorsport alloy wheels are fitted – 10.5-inches wide at the front, 13inches at the rear – and are secured into place with quick-release centre locking nuts. Tyre changes are made easier through an onboard air jacking system, similar to that seen on the McLaren 650S GT3 racer. Design concept previews the dramatic look of the ultra-exclusive track-focused racer One clear goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on track Increased power to 1,000PS (986 bhp) from the motorsport-optimised 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine and lightweight electric motor Want one? For the classic lover.... Jaguar designer Ian Callum puts his personal twist on the famous Mark 2

I

an Callum is a British car designer who has worked for Ford, TWR, Aston Martin, and is currently the Director of Design for Jaguar Cars and largely responsible for the current models of Jaguar. Ian Callum said: “This is a very personal statement. A long held notion that, although the Mark 2 has always been a beautiful car, it could be even more exciting in shape and performance. Whilst maintaining the purity of the car’s form, I wanted to add a number of modern twists to the design. Simplification and clarity was my objective.” The car has been redesigned by Ian for his own personal use and, working with CMC's engineers, it now boasts a huge number of aesthetic and technical modifications that make this a practical, reliable, enjoyable and exciting everyday vehicle. Featuring a modified and uprated 4.3 litre XK engine, 5-speed manual gearbox, unique independent rear suspension and upgraded front brake, Ian said: “The

stance of the Mark 2 is already excellent, but I wished to make it even better. The car’s form is now 30mm lower and sits on 17” split rim spoke wheels. The bumpers are now part of the overall form. It is a fine balance of extracting and adding. “I have always loved traditional louvres as seen on many older race cars. Four louvres appear on the side of the car to add to that sense of power and ‘something different’. Norman Dewis said:“I have been associated with Jaguar for more than 60 years and was their Chief Development Test Engineer for 33 years. Mark 2 by Callum is something special and I was delighted when I was asked to unveil the car. It is something that both Ian Callum and CMC should be very proud of”. Since being built so much interest in the car has been received that a small production run of cars will be built with a starting price in excess of $500,000. www.classic-motor-cars.co.uk/

Hanging Ten

Surf Photographer: Andrew Carruthers Rider: Nic Jones - Current Team Rider, No 2 Australian Longboard Champion

The cool and the mighty are drawn to the Noosaville surf shack where the magic takes place, giving Noosa the salty cultural mix it is known for.

When Peter and Janet White launched the Classic Malibu label some 26 years ago, they were the only manufacturers of surfboards in the Noosa region. Now two and a half decades on, the name is recognised around the world as a purveyor of expertly crafted traditional and progressive longboards, as Coco Seymour Griffin discovers.

W

hen you hear the word ‘Malibu’, what comes to mind? The coconut infused rum responsible for the sun always shining when it’s poured? Or perhaps the affluent beach city in California? What you might not realise is that it is also the name of the racy longboard found in abundance on Noosa’s famous point breaks, being ridden by surfers from all over the world. The Malibu board is a favourite amongst experienced surfers globally, so it is little wonder that Classic Malibu Noosa has become an iconic part of the ocean-dwelling community, having been going now for over 26 years. Run by surfboard craftsman Peter White and his wife Janet, Classic Malibu is the surfing jewel in Noosa’s crown, offering bespoke boards made by hand from scratch – the ultimate surfer’s treat. Raising the bar of Noosa’s surfing scene, Peter and Janet are known and loved on the international circuit, making surfboards of all shapes and sizes for iconic clientele, and exporting their boards to such countries as Europe, Japan, Taiwan and New Zealand, as well as shipping all over Australia.

With some forty-five years of shaping experience under his belt, Peter brings every year of that knowledge and talent into each and every board he creates. The cool and the mighty are drawn to the Noosaville surf shack where the magic takes place, giving Noosa the salty cultural mix it is known for. Originally from Victoria, Peter began making surfboards when he was 14 years old, a man who loved the salt, sea and sand in his hair more than most. “Peter lived and breathed the surf,” reveals Janet. “It was his passion. It still is.” Travelling in their early twenties all over the world, Peter and Janet made surfboards everywhere they went, including America and Europe, and in Spain helped set up a surfboard factory which went on to become one of the biggest in the country. Moving to Noosa in 1987 with their three children to enjoy the quality of life that it provides, Peter and Janet brought their talent with them, and before long Classic Malibu was up and running.

How to choose a surfboard Janet and Peter's top three things to think about when choosing a surfboard: • CONDITIONS – Know the conditions where you will be surfing – what are the waves like? • STYLE OF SURFING – Know what type of surfing you want to do – do you want something relaxed and chilled out, or something a little more high adrenaline where you can complete tight twists and turns? • GET THE RIGHT FIT – Choose a board which will comfortably carry your body weight, and know your own ability, allowing you to enjoy each and every ride

Right: Peter & Janet White “Having seen the waves in Noosa, it was clear that longboards were going to suit the area, and hence Classic Malibu was born,” explains Janet. “Initially starting in the industrial area, business soon picked up and it was not long before we were able to move into the current premises we are now at.” Providing a strong hand in getting the Noosa Festival of Surfing off the ground in 1992, with Classic Malibu one of the only sponsor for many years, Peter and Janet have lived and breathed their cause, intent on Noosa reaching its potential as the surfing mecca it is. “It’s a lifestyle,” smiles Janet. “Surfing is a lifestyle, and making surfboards is even more so. Peter becomes a part of each board he makes, and every single one is unique. It’s art. Some surfers come in and sit for hours to see their boards being crafted. The love, attention to detail and skill that goes into it is incredible to witness.” With the creation of a board taking up to four weeks on average, the creative process is certainly one to be respected, much like the sport itself. “Surfing is not just about catching as many waves as you can,” explains Janet. “It’s also about respecting the ocean, respecting nature and respecting your fellow surfers. With longboard trends often starting in Noosa before catching on around the world, it is not surprising that Peter and Janet have become such an integral part of the gnarly vibe. “Surfing is an addiction, but it’s a good one. When you find yourself riding a wave in azure waters, under the sun, looking back on the white sands of the coastline, you’ll know exactly what I mean.”!
