Noosa Open Studios… Opening Night
W
allace House was awash with lights, and inside the celebration was in full force, as all the artists involved in the inaugural Noosa Open Studio event, gathered to share an evening wine and fine food, as they discussed their excitement at being involved in such an innovative event. Renowned artist Michael Zavros was invited to open the evenings celebrations and shared his excitement at the calibre of arts and crafts he had seen on his short visit to the region. As the NOS has already taken place as we go to press, we are thrilled to be able to share how well the weekend event went. The numbers of visitors was so high that it has ensured that the NOS will become an annual event. Time to sign up now for 2017!!

And, none so fine as the Palmer & Co Champagne dinner recently, where guests dined on Pan steamed Hervey Bay Scallop dumplings, pomelo & garlic chive butter sauce, with Palmer Blanc de Blancs Millesime; Grilled Fremantle Octopus, salad of lop chong, fresh melon & hand-picked beans with Palmer 2008 Vintage; Tea-cured Duck Leg, asian mushrooms from the wok, Jerusalem artichoke & soya with Palmer Blanc de Noirs; and finished the night with Fried brioche donut, strawberry & lemon curd, strawberry pearls and Palmer Brut Rosé. What a night!

MARGOT ROBBIE Story: CONNIE NUTTALL
D
espite conquering the movie industry and permanently lodging herself in male fantasies around the world, Margot Robbie still can’t quite believe her success. Having grown up in the small town of Dalby in Queensland, it’s been difficult adjusting to seeing her name in lights all over the world. “Sometimes I wake up and it’s like I’m living in this other world like being in a dream,” she says. “Just getting to be in The Wolf of Wall Street was a shock and ever since it’s been great and so exciting to have all these opportunities.”
It’s likely not so shocking for her family. As a child, Robbie was always creating talent shows and putting on plays.
“I would force my family to pay one dollar for each performance!” she laughs. “Then in high
school I took an acting course and that pretty much made up my mind as to what I wanted to do with my life.” Robbie’s breakthrough into the world of acting was as typically Australian as her flowing blonde locks and beach-babe image, as she spent a three year stint on Neighbours as kooky, confident Donna Freedman. The transition from soap-teen to Hollywood queen mirrors Robbie’s move from rural Queensland to the bright lights of the City of Angels. “I came to Los Angeles while I was finishing out my contract on Neighbours,” Robbie reveals. “I was saving my money and working with dialect coaches to get my American accent right, mainly hoping that I could find enough work and live cheaply enough that I wouldn’t have to move back to Melbourne.” Wherever she goes, however, Robbie will always be that same Gold Coast gal at heart. Whilst filming Suicide Squad with fellow countryman Jai Courtney, the 24-year-old made sure to put some time aside to indulge in some childhood treats and lend her support to her sporting statesmen. “We watched the State of Origin – Jai went for the blues, I’m with the maroons,” she recalls.“There were beers and vegemite sandwiches – because of the time difference we were having beers at 6 in the morning!” Such is the attitude we’ve come to expect from Robbie. In a world of A-list celebrities appearing as worlds apart from us mere mortals, Robbie stands out not just for her exquisite beauty, but also her down-to-earth nature. Not one to be embroiled in scandals or splashed across the front page, Robbie’s modus operandi revolves around a desire to keep her public image and personal life separate – mirroring her role model, the Melbourne-born Cate Blanchett. “I admire the way Cate has built her career,” she says.“You never read anything about her in the tabloids. I would like to follow that approach and keep my personal life as private as possible.” Of course for someone as recognisable as Robbie, this desire for privacy may well be easier said than done. But for someone who spent her first big pay-check on paying off the mortgage on her mother’s home, and currently resides in a London flat with her boyfriend and two housemates, it’s obvious that this star continues next page...

may not be quite so comfortable with the attention she receives. “I don’t want to be reduced to the clichés that come with being called sexy or a blonde bombshell,” she explains. “I’ve never thought of myself in those terms. I take it as a huge compliment, of course, and it helps open doors, but I grew up feeling very unattractive especially as a teenager when I had braces on and I was wearing glasses. I was very skinny and gangly and I always thought there were so many other girls in
Q & A: If you had to pick one bad thing to do, what would it be? I really like breaking things. Having a baseball bat and getting to smash that window was something I've always wanted to do my entire life, and I didn't get just a window - I got a whole glass wall! Is it true you all had tattoos done on the set of Suicide Squad?
school who were so much prettier than me.” Her latest role as the demented Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad – though effective when commanding the attention of comic-book aficionados – deviated from the norm in that the naturally gorgeous Robbie was hidden beneath a wig, full body paint and 21 temporary tattoos. “It’s so much fun getting into the costumes all the time; you can act however you want because you feel so separate from your normal self,” she reveals. “That makes creating a character so much easier. Having said that, when you come in three hours before everyone else, after six months of that you’re sick of it!” And going forward it appears that Hollywood’s hottest property has a desire to step out of the limelight and get behind the camera, possibly giving hope to the aspiring actresses of the Gold Coast who aim to emulate the success of their idol. “I’m excited to be able to step into the producer side of things at the moment,” she explains. “We’re trying to get a couple of projects together – all are female driven stories with female writers and directors, so that’s what the thesis is about.” We’ve witnessed the rise of Robbie – now get ready for her Hollywood reign.
Yes, it was my idea. I did everyone's tattoos except for Joel Kinnaman's – Will Smith did that one. I don't want Joel's tattoo to be confused with the tattoos that I've given people, because I pride myself on my work. If you want a tattoo that looks like a child did it - that's my style. What's next for you? I'm about to start a film in London. I’ve also started a production company. We're working on producing six films at the moment, so I'm really busy!

SoLEURS HITS THE AUSTRALIAN MARKET…
T
he creative mind behind the new brand SoLEURS, Dr Nathan Orbach was inspired by the harsh yet beautiful Australian climate and landscape, when creating the all-new sunglasses range. These glasses have been created with comfort and versatility in mind. The frames cut a timeless and elegant aesthetic, fitting perfectly into any occasion, whether it's a brisk morning jog, long leisurely day at the beach, or a business meeting in your favourite café. Each design reflects the need for everyday wearability. All SoLEURS’ sunglasses come with polarised lenses, which work to reduce glare and block intense light, which can be dangerous. The brand has set its sights on protecting consumers’ eyes and purse strings, as well as removing their blindfold when it comes to luxury designer sunglasses, by proving that a label doesn’t always mean maximum quality and protection. Available online RRP from $149.00 including free shipping in Australia. For more info please visit: www.soleurs.com
With summer on our doorstep, what will your sunglass style be this season? Are you a fashionista, keen golfer or perhaps you may just love to spend time at the beach? Whatever your needs, at Options Eyecare we have the right style and advice when it comes to choosing your next pair of sunglasses.
S
o where do you start? Aside from the obvious answer of sun protection, there are many considerations including frame style, lens colour and material, anti-reflective and mirrored coatings, plus polarisation. Functionality is also a key factor. Ask yourself are they purely for fashion or are they being worn for pastimes such as golf, fishing, tennis or cycling? Or maybe comfort and sun protection is high on your priority list? At Options Eyecare we have a variety of sunglass styles available in both prescription and non-prescription to meet your requirements. With new styles arriving regularly, the choice is yours. For this seasons fashion, take a peek at our range of designer brands such as Jimmy Choo, Fendi, Sass & Bide, Monkey and Oroton. Some of Jimmy Choo’s frames feature hand applied Swarovski crystals for a sophisticated and luxurious look, whereas the Monkey brand prides itself on being both trendy and environmentally sustainable. For a younger style take a look at the G-Star Raw range. Specialised frames and lenses that are sporting specific include Adidas or Bolle and will please athletes and golfers alike. For the fisherman the Mako range is a real catch. Maui Jim is a great all rounder for both fashion and sporting personalities and offers excellent protection for your eyes at the beach. Visit Options Eyecare Noosaville or Peregian Beach today and choose your sunglass style for this summer season.

They are inquisitive, elegant and capable of understanding culture and appreciating the true value of everything around us. They pay no heed to passing fads. They go straight to the heart of the matter and seek out the comfortable sensations that only a highly sophisticated material can convey. They are people who love restrained, timeless innovation and design.
THE COMPANY.. The parent company of TRANSIT is Tam & Company and it was founded in 1986 by Andrea Cozza, Who still runs the group today. It is still completely family run with no input from external managers or consultants, so everyone answers direct to the family. When it was founded the company had one knitting machine and one sewing machine in an area of 80 m2. Today it spans approximately 7000m2 and it has the very best production systems on the market. Tam & Company is something of a rarity because it is one of the few companies in Italy that still keeps its entire production cycle in house. Everything is conceived, designed and made on the company premises. It is a form of industrial craftsmanship . More than 100 people work for the company. They constitute the very heart of its existence.
THE PHILOSOPHY High quality raw materials, understated elegance, personality , freedom relaxation and a big focus on the quality versus price : these words encapsulate TRANSIT's approach to both clothing and life which it sees as a search for essence and quality. They firmly believe that people should be respected and dressed, but never covered by a garment or brand as they would like the personality of their customers to shine through. Hence the desire for the family to surround itself with people whose vast experience and long careers have taught them that the key to quality is not big names but outstanding raw materials, innovative but simple designs, lots of craftsmanship and work , and a passion for beauty.

Sunshine Coast’s most famous gemstone. It’s the opal, and it’s here to stay.
A precious gem... By Nicole Madigan IT’S THE GEMSTONE SYNONYMOUS WITH THE SUNSHINE COAST – THE OPAL.
B
ut not just any opals. Home to the city’s premier opal specialists, Opals Down Under, The Sunshine Coast has become known for its supply of high quality gems. Since its opening in 1985, Opals Down Under has developed an uncontested reputation for cutting and supplying superior opals. But it’s more than just a business – the gemstone is a passion for owners Immo and Louise Stein, whose love affair with opals began in the 1960s. “It’s a beautiful stone,” says Immo. “With all its glorious colours, I love the challenge to create and enhance the gems by cutting and polishing.” Immo first began cutting opals in 1963 in the South Australian Opal fields of Andamooka, moving to the Coober Pedy Opal Fields five years later after meeting and marrying Louise. Within two years the pair embarked on a decadelong adventure, travelling around Australia in a 31foot caravan, cutting opals from a mobile workshop, and supplying the gems to dealers and jewellery stores. In 1980, they moved to Gympie, setting up their first opal shop and five years later relocated to the Sunshine Coast where Opals Down Under was born. Fast forward 36 years and Immo and Louise are semi-retired, yet they can’t quite pull themselves away. “We travel quite a bit now, quite often taking our camper van, Harvey, out to the opal fields, sometimes on purchasing trips, but also to catch up with old friends,” says Immo “It’s an art form that is very involved, and hard to move away from… it can be an addiction.” But Immo and Louise are confident their business is good hands, with Manager and opal cutter Scott Coggan renowned for his exceptional opal cutting skills. “Cutting opal is a delicate art, and the slightest extra touch on the cutting wheels could mean a major difference in value,” Scott says. “It can become quite a rush.”

Like Immo and Louise, Scott’s introduction to opals was similarly romantic. “After working in the building industry, I needed to get away for a restart, and my father took me on a trip to the Queensland Opal Fields,” says Scott. “It was by chance, taking cover in an abandoned mine during a storm, that we found a large boulder with a green vein of opal. “Cutting through that rock was a turning point, which led to eventually starting a cutting and wholesaling business, and eventually meeting Immo and Louise here at Opals Down Under.” Now the manager of Opals Down Under, Scott cuts, repairs and values opals for clients, as well as providing custom design advice. He continues to cut and value opals for clients all over Australia. In Australia, there are four main types of opal, starting with the common Milky or White Opal, then the more vibrant but translucent Crystal Opal, the Queensland Boulder Opal and the rare, dark Black Opal. “Obviously, the rarer the opal, the more value it will have,” Scott says. “But there are other factors including clarity, brilliance, pattern.” Multiple patterns appear in opal, varying in rarity. The same goes for colour, with red being the most valuable, purple and blue the least valuable. One of the most intriguing thing about opals is their versatility. Opals Down Under sells a wide range of opal products, from rings and earrings to pendants and even watches. “Our showroom is quite large, with customers quite often surprised as they were expecting a smaller store. “We have a lot on offer, other than Australian Opal, such as semi-precious gemstones, fossils, souvenirs, and the famous Scratch Patch, where visitors can fossick for gems. Prices are incredibly varied, with some pieces selling for less than $60, while others are valued at tens of thousands of dollars. Which goes to show just how diverse this unique gemstone really is. “Nearly every day, we have customers walk in with little to no knowledge of Australian Opal, and we take great pride in being able to expand someone’s perspective of the gemstone, dispelling any myths associated with the stone, and developing an understanding of what makes an opal valuable.” “We’re open seven days a week, so there’s always someone around to help.”

Peter Chenoweth is a man on a mission. He has a vision, and he wants us to share it with him. The inaugural Noosa International Film Festival. The four-day event will screen new international and Australian feature length films and high quality short films from all corners of the world, and an instructive filmmaking event and intimate Q&A with an award winning Australian filmmaker.
Man on a Mission
K
But why a film festival in a town already, some might argue, over-subscribed with festivals? “There's something different about film,” says Peter. “There's definitely a magic to it.” That magic has already started to materialise in the shape of positive responses from filmmakers throughout Australia and from other parts of the world. A staggering 217 short film entries were submitted from 31 countries. Around half of all submissions have come from overseas. “The response from filmmakers everywhere has been absolutely incredible,” he says, adding: “I’ve been humbled by the high level of quality of the films being submitted. Over to feature films and already five Australian, one World and one Queensland film premieres have been scheduled, and the program provides for a total of seven World Cinema featurelength films to be screened.
An impressive line-up of top names in the world of international cinema has been recruited. The Australian premiere of Belgium film, Melody, will be the opening night screening. The French/English film explores surrogacy and adoption in contemporary Europe, starring award-winning Australian actress, Rachael Blake (Sleeping Beauty, Lantana, Truth) – whom will be in attendance. The Festival will also feature the Queensland premiere of Fell. An evocative drama set in the Australian bush and Kasimir Burgess' much anticipated debut film marking the emergence of a distinctive new voice on the Australian film scene. Closer to home, locally-made film, Ryder Country will have its world premiere on the big screen. Ryder Country was shot in various locations around the Sunshine Coast providing a stunning backdrop for the chilling drama that unfolds. Starring Conrad Coleby (Sea Patrol), and Australian screen icons Rowena Wallace (Sons and Daughters), and Peter Sumner, guests at the premiere will be accompanied by some of the cast and crew. An intimate "Inside the Actor’s Studio"-style filmmaking masterclass also forms an integral part of the festival, which kicks off on .....

The evening’s headline speaker will be none other than Academy Award-winning Australian cinematographer John Seale (Mad Max: Fury Road, Rain Man, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain), as he brings festival goers up close and personal to a life spent making landmark films. "Support like that so early on, before we've even staged the first festival, is amazing.” Just as there is a magic to film, Peter and his team of volunteer experts have come up with a magic formula of their own to make this film festival work. To ensure that the Noosa International Film Festival, or NIFF for short, will not be just any old film festival, Peter has brought on board a team of dedicated volunteers all of whom are experts in their chosen fields. “There's more than 20 people involved, all volunteers, each of them contributing their time and their expertise,” says Peter. And while he considers it unfair to single out any one individual, he is eager to highlight the commitment of some of his key players. These include Arnold Kopff, a recent recipient of one of the recent Queensland Day Awards; Campbell Corfe, who has been named the event’s President; marketing guru David Bell, in charge of revenue; Production
lead by Trent Harvison and Maree Thomson; volunteer coordinator Annie Guthrie, Carole Philipp and Alison Cooper and her marketing and PR team. “Without them”, he says, “there wouldn’t be a Noosa International Film Festival,” So what stands to make NIFF so special among the 3,000+ film festivals round the world? And why would the world’s film industry want to flock to Noosa to showcase its products or display its wares? “A lot people in the industry believe that, with our beach culture, our caring attitude towards the environment, our welcoming community and our understated elegance, a film festival is just right for Noosa,” says Peter. “That was our initial belief, and it’s one that appears to be shared by a lot of others as well – foremost among them our many sponsors, of whom there can never be too many!” And, he adds: “All we need now is for the people of Noosa, and our neighbours in the surrounding area, to support our first truly international film festival and embrace it with that

Turkish Murkish is a new company with new ideas about an old product from and old tradition. It is about towels. Turkish towels. They are the perfect towel as they weigh about a third as much as a normal bath towel. They don't pick up and retain sand like a normal beach towel and they don't take forever to dry. The magic is in the Turkish Buldan cotton, which is a tough fibre, with a density and length that makes it ideal for towels. Most of the range are loomed from raw cotton which makes it very stiff at first, as no chemicals are added to make them soft and absorbent. They just love being washed. And, the more you wash them the softer and more absorbent they will become. Because of the light weight and convenient sizings, they can be used for almost anything. Available at Mensroom Hastings Street. For all stockists visit: www.turkishmurkish.com

pring is here, bringing with it rising temperatures, longer days and floaty dresses. Races, weddings and formal occasions are all being booked into our diaries and while you might consider Spring/Summer to be about bronzed skin, barely there make up and low maintenance hairstyles,
into the roots of the lashes. By having the vivid blue shade both along the waterline and the lash line, the eyes looked much brighter and more defined.
50 Smudges of grey The use of the grey colour for liners and shadows is seen frequently this season, so
Make-up looks
by Elizabeth Kramar - Icon Studios we have news for you; this Spring things are about to get a little bit spicier. The lips are bolder, the eyes are brighter and lashes have us all in a flutter!
Red Alert Classic red lips are back in a huge way this Spring. This look works best by keeping eye makeup to a minimum in order to keep the look fresh and classy. Red always makes a big statement, be sure to line the lips first for precise application before applying your chosen lip colour.
Blue Illusion Out of the million different ways makeup artists applied blue eye shadow and liner this season, my favourite version was the major liner look. This look is achieved by lining the inner rims of the eyes with blue eye pencil and then tracing the top and bottom lash lines and adding extra oomph by smudging a bit of cobalt cream shadow

much so that we are considering really taking on this trend. It is a softer look to the smoky eye, while still managing to hold specific appeal as it brings the focus to the colour projected from within the ring around the eyes. Keep the look simple and sweet; and it will work famously. From light silver to a dark rock and roll charcoal this look can be taken from day to night.
Ombre pout One of the biggest looks seen this season has been the ombre lip with a neutral beige pink and no definition, literally appearing as if blood was spilling out from the inside, kind of like biting into a poison apple. Try blushing pink lips that have a slight ombre tinge, fading away at the edges while darker in the centre.
Lash out There is definitely a '60s revival on the Spring/Summer runways this season. Chunky twiggy lashes are a feminine
look that sits on the cooler side of the makeup spectrum. Pair chunky faux lashes with dusty mauve lips to keep your makeup going from going too dolly-looking, groom brows, keep skin as fresh as possible, and use the softest shade of pink blush you can find so you get definition but not an overt flush.
Pretty in Pink This is a flushed fresh faced look suitable to those who want a minimalistic look, just add transparent foundation or BB crème with glossy eyelids, matte pink flushed cheeks and rosy stained lips to complete your look.
Brow envy Beautiful bold groomed eyebrows are this seasons must have accessory; but unfortunately a lot of woman have over waxed or over plucked their brows in the past therefore brow kits, fillers, pencils, waxes, and putty will become your new best friend. If your brows are a good shape but require filling, pencils and powders are the best solution.
Line it up Double Wing-Add a little London vibe with 60’s flair with a full cat eye that has not one, but two separate wings. Separate the two with a white eyeliner drawn between them. If a full on cat eye is not for you but you want to try something fresh, make just the subtlest “V” at the edge of your top lid’s eyeliner to lift the eyes for a more youthful modern look

SPRING INTO SOME COLOUR FOR SPRING @ Global Male Trending… We uncover the 'modern male' with Stephen Handisides
100% COTTON AND LINEN MENS CLOTHING + HUGE RANGE OF GREAT ACCESSORIES
TV presenter Stephen Handisides is the grooming editor on Channel 10’s Cruise Mode and the brains behind the Global Aesthetic Awards. As a former model, journalist and an all-round male grooming expert, there isn’t much he doesn’t know about men’s style. In the lead up to party season, we spoke exclusively to Stephen to get the lowdown, on looking sharp and what women really want from men.
M
ale grooming has never been more important for us guys and just because Queenslanders are fairly relaxed, men can still be stylish and casual. MyFaceMyBody recently conducted a survey from a crosssection of women, from four different continents on what aesthetically they look for in a man. The results give a valuable insight into what many men can improve upon. The overwhelming response from women, was that when they met a man for first time, they instantly looked at shoes, smile, hands, hair and eyes. Basically a man’s overall appearance and presentation - so first impressions really do count! You don’t necessarily have to wear designer clothes to impress. It is all about how you present yourself. You can’t go past a sharp suit for style factor, but if the occasion and climate doesn’t allow for it, then a crisp linen shirt, casual chino shorts and good quality pair of leather sandals can look really stylish. Dress for the occasion; black tie formal, wear a sophisticated tuxedo; casual dinner date, smart shirt and dress jeans. Just remember, your look doesn’t have to be expensive. There are some great men’s brands around where you can emulate the high-end, designer looks for a fraction of the cost. Check out men’s fashion and grooming blogs and Instagram for men’s style tips and inspiration. Male grooming, is important, but spending hours in the bathroom isn’t essential for men, if you maintain the basics. A good haircut, crisp shave, or neatly trimmed beard, clean hands and short nails, no dirty fingernails please (this was a major complaint from the survey results). Your barber is your friend. Visit a good barber’s regularly and on the morning of, or the day before any important events. They’ll give you a great haircut, good shave and remove any of those mono-brow issues. Don’t be afraid of men’s grooming products. Men’s grooming is the fastest growing area of the beauty industry and there are some great ‘manly’ products out there. My personal favourites are Ultraceuticals, Dirt for Men and Aspect Dr, but experiment and find what you like. Moisturise, use deodorant, wax / pomade and find a great aftershave that isn’t too overpowering. A classic scent won’t date and won’t be too strong. You want them to remember your scent, not be knocked out by it. Manners, nothing says ‘gentleman’ more than good old fashioned manners. Open a door for a lady, offer your seat, say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, or compliment her on what she is wearing, and your mum would be proud! Lastly and most importantly, look people in the eye, smile and be confident. A friendly smile immediately breaks down barriers and lets the recipient know that you are open to conversation. For more male grooming tips and inspiration, check out Stephens Instagram @shandisides Twitter @shandisides and his website and blog on www.stephenhandisides.com

No trip to Noosa is complete without a visit to the famous Noosa Marina in Tewantin. The hear tbeat of the Noosa River and a firm favourite with locals allyear-round. During the holiday season, the Wharf is bustling with visitors enjoying the views, the food, the wine, and the company that makes this par t of Noosa such a great place to spend time.
S
ituated on the picturesque Noosa River, which is the lifeblood of this beautiful shire, it is just a short drive by car from Hastings Street. Or take a leisurely sightseeing trip on the Riverlight Ferry, stopping at many points along the Noosa River. It is one of the most relaxing ways to see and arrive at Noosa Marina.
Although the forty-berth marina is suitable for boats from small tinnies to forty-foot catamarans, it is much more than just a harbour. It plays host to music and festivals throughout the year. Boasting an array of eateries including the award-winning restaurants, Rump House Steak & Seafood along with The River Deck; not only an award-winning wedding venue but also one of the best north facing dining locations in town. Sit back and enjoy the views of bobbing boats and clear skies from the health-conscious Café VinCino, or visit Italian Marina, an Italian delight and the perfect place to go for traditional wood-fired pizzas prepared in full view of the diners. Many a local will direct you to the Noosa Marina for some weekend fun. The place truly comes alive on Friday nights with diners tucking into fish and chips from the Noosa Harbour Fish Market, while wine glasses are clinking away to the beat of live music on offer at The Harbour Wine Bar. The Village Square, the heart of the beachside town has interconnecting lanes and pathways to everything and provides a shady area for locals and visitors. Picnic tables designed by Richard Newport are popular with families and friends to enjoy take-out fare from the nearby eateries and for shoppers who are in need of a coffee and momentary respite from retails therapy. Market Day is held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, when live music attracts large crowds to the lawn in front of the Peregian Beach Surf Club. "We've built an amazing live music scene here, thanks to some dedicated local musicians who set up Peregian Originals, says Ange Takats, a Peregian Beach-based author, journalist and musician.“There is no regular community music festival of its kind anywhere else in Australia and this makes me proud as punch. Just over the sand hills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of wallum heath which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in spring. On the western side of Peregian Beach is Lake Weyba National Park, and Lake Weyba, which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. Nearby, too, is the southern extension of the Noosa National Park with a rich mix of coastal heath and scrub and stately rainforest which provides sanctuary and support for a wealth of native flora and fauna. ou’ll find everything from stunning jewellery and beautiful boutiques to exciting homewares and gifts-with-a-difference, boogie boards, bikinis and board shorts, shells, cappuccinos - and crayfish to cocktail wear and candelabras. Noosa’s hub and central business precinct stretches from the post office and bowls club, along Sunshine Beach Road, into Lanyana Way and is intertwined with interesting arcades, sidewalks and a veritable treasure trove of diverse options and an eclectic mix of shopping, dining and entertainment choices. What a remarkable change from the 50s when according to local Col Wheeler “These were times when Tewantin was better known than Noosa, and
the dirt road that joined them, sometimes made travelling dangerous. David Low Way did not exist.” The Junction houses banks and lending institutions, professional, medical and government offices, radio stations, cinema complex, the J, the Junction Station, a transit centre for bus services. There are over 200 businesses in the area to assist with most needs. With the influx of new dining establishments like Padstow's, Village Bike and Noosa Boulangerie & Patisserie, the area is constantly evolving and reenergising its persona to meet the needs of all. With it's annual Junction Festival and other family events planned for 2016, Noosa Junction is definitely the place to keep watching.

Having spent her adult years living in the hear t of Noosa city, Anna Henbur y yearned for the farm life of her childhood. After packing up her family and embarking on a dramatic tree change, Anna now runs an iconic sustainable farm, tucked away in the Noosa Hinterlands.

aving grown up enjoying the fresh country air and wide open spaces of a sheep and cropping farm in South Australia, the urban life of Noosa left Anna Henbury with a sense of longing she couldn’t quite shake. “Looking out of my kitchen window into my neighbours laundry just didn’t rock my boat,” says Anna, though that’s exactly what she did for more than ten years, running local business Noosa TV with her husband Mike. “Having grown up on a farm, the confines of urban living were just not me, so we started to look for some space,” says Anna. Still running Noosa TV, the couple were initially looking for about five acres when Mike decided to drop into an auction on Lawnville Road in the Noosa Hinterlands. “You could have knocked me over when he called and asked me to come and sign the forms because he had bought a 150 acre farm!” Little did they know, that overwhelmingly large property would eventually become Melsted Park, a stunning family farm dedicated to sustainability and the development of a biologically diverse ecosystem. “Initially there was panic – how were we going to look after all of this land, animals, four children and both continue to work full time?,” says Anna. “Once we were living on the farm we gradually settled back into everyday life, with picnics in the paddock, fencing and exploring added as a weekend activities.” It wasn’t until the couple’s eldest son, Lachlan, was diagnosed with – and survived - Stage 4 Lymphoma, that the plans for Melsted Park

began to evolve. “During this time our whole life was turned completely upside down, we were in survival mode,” says Anna. “After facing a life threatening illness as a family I believe that your perspective changes, it certainly did for us. “We sold Noosa TV and decided that we would make a full time living on the farm and spend more time with our kids, and eat food that we knew.” At the heart of Henbury’s goal was to manage the farm with the least amount of chemicals, while also reducing tick numbers. The answer? Chickens. “We knew that by having house chickens we had reduced the tick numbers in the house yard, so why wouldn’t that work in the paddocks? “Slowly we have been building our flock to capacity over the past two years, we’re not quite there yet but hope to be in January 2017.” Melsted Park now sells pastured eggs, pastured chicken, pastured beef and seasonal vegetables’ from Gus’ Garden, run by the couple’s son Angus. They also trade stock with other local farmers, and also offer beef from Eumundi Beef, pork from Tamworth Flyers, and fresh honey and honey comb from another local farm. “All of the products we sell at Farm Shop are local and as chemical free as possible. “All animals are grown in an ethical way. moved onto fresh pasture daily, as are the cows.” In addition to chemical free farming and the ethical treatment of animals, soil regeneration is a key priority for Melsted Park. “The idea is that if our soil is healthy and balanced then the food we grow will be healthy and balanced. “Human health is about what we consume – if we improve the quality of what eat, we improve our health. It all comes back to the soil. “By improving the soil we improve the pasture, by improving the pasture we improve the diversity, by improving the diversity we improve our ecosystem.” A few years ago Melsted Park became members of Landcare, who visit the property regularly, providing advice on what trees to plant during the Henbury’s annual Spring plant. “Our goal is to plant at least 300 trees each year, last year we planted to stabilise a bank that had a tendency to slip. “This year we will begin to create a corridor from an adjoining piece of land through our creek and up to another property.” Though Anna admits farming life is demanding, she says the tree change has been both a literal and figurative breath of fresh air for her and her family. “It’s great to see the kids enjoy the space on the farm, one of their favourite things to do on the weekend is to go exploring,” she says. “They pack a backpack with all of their essentials and head off, we see them again when they are hungry for more than they have taken with them.” While things don’t always go to plan, the Henburys believe it’s important to visualise what you want out of life and make it happen - and they’ve created a vision board to achieve just that. “If life doesn’t feel right we read this and tweak it, it’s amazing how one small word can change so much. “My motto is: be brave to make it different – change the things you can and let go of the things you can’t - make your life your own.” Melsted Park’s Farm Shop is open to the public each Saturday morning from 8-11am, and farm walks are held throughout the year.

Adjusting to Noosa’s ‘Fruity Fickleness’ Scott Mathias CHHC. AADP – Author & GoVegan Deli Founder
Spring is full of clichés; suffice to say IT IS a time for physical and spiritual reinvigoration. What program you might ask?
I
love it when folk around me talk about spring in Noosa when in fact this winter just past has been ‘spring all along’ – in the 16 years I have been here I cannot remember such a warmer winter. This means when spring officially arrived it was a ‘seamless’ transition from one date on the calendar to another. This ‘state’ in itself, can present issues for the physical because traditionally the body clock resets itself based on the seasons – this aside I decided to play ball with this ‘seasonal fickleness’ and adopt SPRING FOOD status anyway. Spring food in Noosa looks like bananas, grapefruit, lemons, Asian greens, avocados, papaya (paw paw) pineapple, strawberry, kiwifruit, spring onions and spinach. One just has to go to the famous Noosa Farmers market on Sunday mornings to see exactly what’s on offer and you WILL be amazed. We don’t suffer the massive seasonal variations they do down south, in-fact our summers are the poorest growing season. Spring IS the best time of the year, ‘me thinks’. Just take a look at our GoVegan Deli edible flower, herb and vege-wall – its nearly new, but already it’s ‘going off’. We pick a few morsels each day to go into our green salads, wraps or as accompaniment to our famous gluten free vege-burgers, gluten free savoury ‘pumping waffle’ as I call it (because its full of healthy pumpkin, dehydrated to retain maximum nutritional impact). Our visitors are amazed all the flowers are actually edible and form part of the ‘spring retinue’ of colourful entrants at a time of year where flowers struggle to have a place, aside from daffodils. Full of antioxidants – free radical scavengers – flowers should play an important roll in your daily intake of plant based nutrients. We grow a lot of pineapple sage – its hardy and gives a plate a total lift in colour and appeal. We have garlic chive flowers at this time of year along with nasturtium and lots of flowering rocket and pink geraniums.
In many ways spring personifies beauty and invigoration. It sets the tone for the arrival of summer, which takes on a completely different hue – for another edition.

I start my spring day with spring fruit; a simple banana, orange, kiwi, pineapple and strawberry smoothie. In fact I can honestly say that a 300ml glass of mixed fruit really puts spring into my step and my colon – the enzymes on fruit actually support the release of yesterday’s unwanted food waste. On that interesting fact I bid you a kind welcome to spring in Noosa and look forward to seeing you at ‘Noosa’s Great Growing Wall’ – GoVegan Deli in Thomas Street, Noosaville for all beautiful vegan, gluten and dairy free, sugar and grain free food. Tea-smoked Trout This dish is one of our old flames, literally. A studio kitchen was almost burnt down the last time Will smoked trout on national television! It all turned out well in the end and with that kind of experience under our belts we’re sure you’ll feel safe in trusting us to guide you along the way with this recipe. Prep & Cook Time: 2 1⁄2 hours Serves: 4 To smoke your trout, you will need a simple metal smoking box. 1. Place the fish in a dish large enough to lay them flat, then cover with the brine Ingredients. Cover the dish with cling film and allow the fish to brine for at least 2 hours in the fridge. 2. Soak the woodchips in the apple juice for 1 hour. 3. Drain the woodchips and scatter them thinly over the smoking box tray. Add the tea leaves to the smoking box and seal with the lid. 4. Remove the trout from the brine and pat them completely dry inside and out with paper towel. 5. Take the smoke box outside but keep it away from any direct wind. Light the burner on the smoking box and allow the smoke to develop, this will take about 10–15 minutes. Remove the lid and place the fish in the smoking box. Close the lid and smoke for 12–14 minutes until the skin darkens and can be easily peeled from the flesh. 6. Remove the fish from the smoking box and allow them to cool slightly before peeling off the skin. Try to keep the head and tail intact. Serve the fish on a large plate with a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkling of dill and a few slices of lemon. 2 rainbow trout, cleaned and gutted 2 cups small cut woodchips 2 cups apple juice 4 apple and elderflower teabags, tea leaves only extra virgin olive oil, to drizzle dill fronds, to serve 2 lemons, sliced BRINE: 4 tablespoons sea salt flakes 2 tablespoons brown sugar 4 apple and elderflower teabags (feel free to flavour the brine with any kind of teayou like) 2 litres cold water or enoughto cover the fish

Green Banana Som Tum Thai Salad

T
his is a great way to use green bananas in a salad. The natural sweetness of Australian bananas balances the chilli. Use a food processor or mortar and pestle to crush the dressing ingredients for best results. The secret of this salad is to shred and chop all the ingredients well - except the bananas. Prepare this just before you want to eat and serve as a side dish with seafood or chicken.
Ingredientts: 2 green or just ripe bananas, sliced (last minute) 60 gm or 1/3 cup light palm sugar 2 tablespoons boiling water 2 x cleaned coriander roots and some stems, chopped 1 clove of garlic 1 small red chilli, chopped ¼ cup lemon or lime juice 2 teaspoons fish sauce 1 x 250 gm punnet cherry tomatoes, chopped into odd large and small pieces - add the seeds and juices to the bowl ½ a small Spanish onion, shredded very fine 1 ½ cups Lebanese cucumber, sliced or 1 large Lebanese cucumber, shredded ¼ cup dry roasted peanuts, crushed
Method: Place the palm sugar and boiling water in a bowl and set aside to cool. Place the coriander, chilli, lemon juice, sugar, water, fish sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until fine. Pour into a medium sized bowl. Add the chopped tomatoes, Spanish onion and cucumber to the bowl. Then add the finely sliced green banana. Toss well. Sprinkle with peanuts and extra coriander.

Wine’s ‘indie stars’ headline Iconic Winemakers launch...

Lindts Steve Loane left & John Quinn

ine expert John Quinn and Lindt Australia CEO Steve Loane have launched a new wine retail concept that has assembled a virtual Dream Team of Australia's most decorated winemakers. Iconic Winemakers is a new “prestige over price” online venture that is the first retailer to focus solely on Australian wine from elite independent winemakers. Quinn has held top management roles for Penfolds, Wynns, Coonawarra Estate and Lindeman’s among others.
Loane’s influence on chocolatier giant Lindt in Australia has been profound since taking the CEO role in 2001, taking sales from $5million when he started to $200 million in 2015. Lindt was voted most trusted chocolate brand in Australia by Readers Digest after 15 years of Cadbury Dominance. “An Iconic Winemaker is one of Australia’s best credentialed winemakers, who has made their name building many of our most-loved brands before going on to produce wine under their own label,” Quinn explained. “If you picture the great Max Schubert, who created Grange, leaving Penfolds to start Schubert’s Wines – that’s an Iconic Winemaker. “Our talent has excelled with Lindeman’s, Penfolds, Hardy’s, Houghton’s, Orlando, Rosemount, Seppelt, Tyrrell’s - the list goes on. They have typically also advised in the ‘old world’ wine regions of France, Italy and Germany. So career-wise they are at the top of their game.”
THAI ME UP BABY Fill a tall glass with crushed ice, fresh lychees, lime wedges, sliced chilies, then pour in 20ml Domaine de Canton; 20ml Paraiso; 20ml Havana Club then top with ginger beer. The perfect cocktail to enjoy on a bright and breezy Spring day!
RED SOUR A new take on a New York Whiskey Sour Take a mason jar and sugar the rim then dip into toasted almonds. Add ice, 30ml Dissarano; 30ml Grand Marnier; fresh lemon juice and a dash of Merlot. Finish off with a maraschino cherry and enjoy.

Winemakers include Tasmania’s Samantha Connew, who was crowned International Red Winemaker of the Year, former Penfolds senior winemaker Daryl Groom, who is now making a big mark in the US, and celebrated former Hardy’s senior winemaker Larry Cherubino. Referencing common discount-led online retailers led by major retailers, Quinn explained what Iconic Winemakers is not. “Discounted wines, old label clearances or pushing mixed dozens to move dormant stock is not us. What makes Iconic Winemakers unique is that we’re driven by quality, not a price point,” he said. “Our selection is not available in bottle shops or big retail chains. It is free to subscribe and there are no obligations or compulsory delivery cycles, so you don’t have a mixed case turning up on your doorstep every three months and an unwanted credit card charge.” Loane sees similarities between the Iconic Winemakers premise and what has made Lindt a giant in the FMCG space.
“When I came to Lindt 19 years ago, everyone was a milk chocolate person and we were told by major customers ‘Australians don’t want to pay that amount of money for chocolate, and dark chocolate is never going to be a main player in the market place’, ” he said. “We now have 15% of the block market share with dark chocolate because the market has changed. Consumers are more educated and prefer just a few quality pieces of chocolate at night – less is more. “The wine market is similar. Local consumers are more educated than ever about wine and don’t buy solely on price. This changing consumer will appreciate our proposition.” Iconic Winemakers will introduce new winemakers regularly, with wines currently ranging from $20-75. NS Noosa Springs has kept the best for last. After the sale of 270 prestige home sites over nearly two decades, Noosa Springs’ final residential precinct is about to go on the market. It’s the Oasis, the most exclusive stage of the award-winning Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort.
T
he Oasis, overlooking the golf course’s spectacular 11th and 17th hole, comprises a range of homes unique in their quality, luxury and prestige. Ten of the landscaped allotments, each at least 800sq m in size, are already built on. Three of these homes are for sale with the remaining 17 lots being sold as house and land packages. And they are certain to be snapped up. Each home is designed by Noosa Architect Peter Hull, who has developed a reputation for the homes he has already designed in Noosa Springs – residences that reflect the lifestyle and liveability of modern Noosa. They will be built by Noosa Building Company Ian Layton Constructions, whose attention to detail and quality of work is renowned. Both Architect and builder encourage owners to raise their own design ideas and are keen to discuss how they may be adapted to suit the lot of their choice. The Oasis residences offer luxury on a grand scale. The homes already completed comprise a mix of a single story and double story. The single story homes have four bedrooms and four bathrooms, generous indoor and outdoor living areas, and outstanding views over the golf course and the tropical woodland. The double story homes have five bedrooms, each with its own ensuite, and offer even more spectacular outlooks over the golf course and lakes. Then there’s the resort itself – only a few minutes away by golf cart - where residents will find the clubhouse, bar, award-winning restaurant, spa and fitness centres, tennis courts and heated swimming pool. If you are interested in securing a lifestyle that most people can only dream about, arrange an inspection with Bron Collins, in the Real Estate Sanctuary beside the waterfall outside the clubhouse. The front-mid-engine concept with transaxle, the twin-turbo V-8 engine rated at 430 kW/585 hp, the extensively modified suspension, the new aerodynamics and the intelligent lightweight construction lay the foundations for an especially dynamic driving experience. Even from afar, the exclusive "AMG green hell magno" special paintwork leaves no doubt as to the sports car's origin, having spent most of its development time in the "Green Hell" of the Nurburgring racetrack.
S
itMercedes-AMG continues to grow and is expanding the top end of its product range with the introduction of the new AMG GT R. "Our sports-car and performance brand AMG has its roots in motorsport and, ever since its formation, has repeatedly faced up to the competition on the racetrack. These genes are particularly prevalent in the new AMG GT R. Boasting a wealth of technological innovations, the new top-of-the-range model is proof of the close collaboration between our constructors of racing cars and road-going vehicles," states Professor Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
This road-going sports car with motor-racing genes and innovative technical solutions offers an ultimate driving experience that allows people to feel our motorsport origins in every fibre. It combines the driving dynamics of our AMG GT3 racing car with the everyday practicality of the AMG GT. Those with petrol in their veins will be thrilled by the radical longitudinal and lateral acceleration, the precise turn-in, and the sensational grip. We have modified all performancerelevant components and linked them together intelligently for maximum driving dynamics," says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. More power, more torque, faster response: the engine The heart of the new high-performance athlete is pumping stronger than ever: the AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine in the AMG GT R has an output of 430 kW (585 hp), which is 55 kW (75 hp) more than the previous top-of-the-range engine in the GT S. The peak torque of 700 Nm is available between 1900 and 5500 rpm. Figures such as 3.6 seconds from zero to 100 km/h and a top speed of 318 km/h, combined with the outstanding driving dynamics, will undoubtedly translate into extremely fast laps on the racetrack. The new exclusive colour "AMG green hell magno" alone establishes a visual link to the "Green Hell", the nickname for the legendary "North Loop" of the Nurburgring, emphasising that the car's roots are firmly embedded in the racetrack.
"With the new AMG GT R, we have reached the next level of driving performance.

Cape York... more than red d Wild horses visiting at Seisia Holiday Park Our luxurious Land Rover complete with tools on bonnet & one of the many river crossings along The Old Telegraph Track
Adventure TRAVEL TICK ONE FOR THE BUCKET LIST TRIPS
An adventure loving (to a point), four-wheel driver’s secret dream is a trip to the ‘Cape”... That’s Cape York the northern most tip of Australia. Words & Photos: Tom Murray
H
aving thought about it for a few years now, Josh, my son (who is a Land Rover fanatic) and I decided in-between deadlines that July 2016 was now-or-never time. Despite being a member of a Land Rover drivers’ club with 90 or so members, we were the only ones ready to rock and roll (literally). Not being satisfied with a perfectly comfortable Range Rover with air-conditioning, air bag suspension and lovely sheepskin covered seats, we decided that an ex-army Land Rover with no refinements would be better, well at least it started out that way. Me being a little more of a luxury lover demanded air-con be installed and power steering added, as I’m not as strong as I used to be - and some sound and heat proofing so the crocs (that’s the shoes, not the snappy type) don’t stick to the metal floor. A few more modifications, a built in kitchen, fridge freezer, hot water maker (didn’t work after it was installed) extra fuel and water tanks, endless trips to BCF, Bunnings and Super Cheap - we were ready for action. Without boring you with all the details, the trip just just under 6,000 klms from the Noosa and return to Gold Coast took about 21 days. We drove straight to the Cape up the Peninsula Development Road which starts up past Mareeba, surprisingly apart from horrendous corrugations it’s a relatively easy drive, as demonstrated by the amount of grey-haired nomads making the trip in their new Land Cruisers with a range of caravans, camper trailers, boats etc swaying on the back. If you don’t like a little red dirt and dust it’s probably not going to be enjoyable, having said that, it’s a pretty comfortable trip if you take your time. Fuel, food, camping spots and hot showers are readily available every few hundred klms so there’s really no need to go overboard with equipment and extra water etc - unless you are going well off the beaten track. The scenery - red dirt and dust, eventually turns into spectacular aqua blues as you reach the ‘tip’, beautiful sunsets, white beaches, crystal clear rivers and waterfalls open your eyes to the beauty which is hidden in this northern paradise - just waiting for you to find it. A trip over to Thursday Island from Seisia just 35klms approximately south from the Cape is also a must, the tranquil blue waters are home to the beautiful blue painted lobsters, which you can see on one of the many guided tours around the island. Unfortunately like most of our best Australian produce they’re exported live to China, although some frozen meat is available for around $55 a kilo. Just make sure you take an esky. We didn’t and Kaylene will never forgive us! Also a must-see is the Green Hill fortifications on top of the hill, which were built in 1891 to hold off the possible invasion of the Russians at bay. total with a 5 klm range, they made sure we weren’t going to be drinking vodka for a few more years to come! Lunch at the Torres Strait pub at $15 for a beautiful fresh piece of Spanish Mackerel and salad is a great deal, unfortunately for some - beer is actually cheaper than a bottle of water so be prepared... Preparation for the trip is still a major planning exercise so to help with that we have enlisted the knowledge of a local who has written the ultimate guide to the whole of Cape York, some 300 pages as an E-Book available on the internet, see the details at the end of story. Katrin Holmsten is the author and a resident of Bamaga which is around 32kms south of the ‘Tip’. She is also the partner of the local RACQ man Mark O’Hagan, who has the unenviable task of covering near on 600 klms of territory.
The inside knowledge from local and author Katrin Holmsten In late July 2016, I had just got home from doing some Cape York tracks, when Tom and Josh Murray turned up at our place in Bamaga, at the tip of Cape York Peninsula, where my partner Mark owns the RACQ towing and mechanical services business Cape York Spares and Repairs. Needing their diffs replaced after the crossing of Nolans Brook, we had a good chat and I was inspired to write a bit about our part of the world.
I
t is a beautiful part, very different from the rest of Australia. It is wild, it is a lot less developed, it is rich in nature and culture. Dominated by the culture of Torres Strait Islanders, there is also the Aboriginal, the European, and (mostly in the past) also the Asian - mainly in the pearling history. Pearl diving used to be huge, today there are still a few working farms left on a couple of islands that you can visit. The whole trip to the Tip is ideally done in a four wheel drive, even though you can also fly to the Tip and also the Torres Strait - there is no reason why everyone of us would not be able to turn it into their own great four wheel drive adventure. The thing is, you don't need to do the hard four wheel drive tracks, even if you do the tracks, you don't need to do the hardest parts, there are bypass roads and bypass tracks around all the hard stuff, and you can take it exactly to the level that suits you, your gear and experience. You can rough it or stay in resorts, you can fly it or have an adventure on the tracks, it is entirely up to you, but the best fun is to be had if you drive all the tracks

and creek and river crossings. Planning: People often don't know where to start as there is not so much information available. A good start for planning is the FREE Pocket Guide at http://www.cape-york-australia.com/cape-yorktravel.html - a Cape York website business that I run from an ideal location - the Tip of the Peninsula. It gives you an idea what is there and why most people visit Cape York. It discusses in depth the advantages and disadvantages of each month, so you can work out which time of the year is best for you to visit. It gives you a short overview on what are the best options to get here and get around, and what kind of accommodation is available. It gives you a short description of places and how much time you should plan for the whole trip, and gives you advice on how to count your budget and work out roughly how much you would expect it all to cost you. Preparation: The most important part of the preparation is the preparation of your vehicle. And the key thing

don't want to hang around and wait for up to a week for the parts to arrive from Cairns. We live remote, everything costs more time and money up here. According to my partner Mark O'Hagan who does the vehicle recoveries in northern Cape York, including the Old Telegraph Track, you should bear in mind the following: Your vehicle should have: •High clearance •Snorkel •Low range gear (particularly if you drive manual) •Good suspension • A dual battery system if you run a fridge from car batteries General parts to bring: •Selection of basic tools, nuts and bolts, fuses and globes •Jumper leads •Fan belts; radiator hoses •Oil for diffs, gearbox and the engine • Insulating tape •Wheel bearings • Fuel, air and oil filters •Cable ties and tyre wire • WD40 or similar; tarp to put across the front of the vehicle for deeper river crossings •Puncture repair kit and two spare wheels Recovery gear to carry: •Compressor to let your tyres down and up

Tips on how, where and when to spot that crocodile, cassowary and tree kangaroo. Come and see our famous palm cockatoo the largest and smartest of all cockatoos and found nowhere else in Australia. Only thanks to the land bridge that existed between Papua New Guinea and the tip of Cape York millions of years ago, we also have Eclectus parrots, green tree pythons, and cuscus. Human history also started here - not only did the first Indigenous people approach Australia from the north - the early seafarers did too. While the First Fleet and the first British and Irish settlers started inhabiting Australia from the south - the north had long before been the starting point of it all. Then there were the land exploration, the gold rushes, the first settlers at Somerset, and the Second World War - all of which have left plenty of landmarks and some very interesting areas to discover. And the Torres Strait is a completely different world again. Whether you are a travel, history, wildlife or track junkie, or just want to get away to a place completely different from most of the rest of Australia - Cape York has it all.
Beautiful crystal clear waters of Fruit Bat Falls is - if there is anything that needs fixing, actually anything that even could be fixed - do it while you are still at home. That leak, that worn out battery, the tires that are getting old - it will all be a lot more costly and time consuming once you are on the road. n March this year, Julia was part of an amazing, almost sell-out show at the Hong Kong Asia Contemporary Art Show. She then returned to her home town of Noosa and back to her studio with an amazing list of commissions, many ordered by returning clients. Julia has now been invited back for September 2016 show, a staggering 5th time for this hard-working artist! She was also invited to the Art Expo New York in April, where she exhibited for a 3rd time, and was additionally invited to be on a special discussion panel that exchanged views about the “Secrets of a Successful Artist”. When Julia returns from Hong Kong in late September, she intends taking some well-earned personal time to enjoy Noosa and be at her Studio Gallery in Noosaville. Julia will need a little rest in between commissions, as she's also been honoured by an invitation from the selection panel to exhibit at the prestigious international show, Florence Biennale October 2017. NS Jean Cocteau French (1889 - 1963) ‘Study of Bull Fighter El Cordobes
As a bullfighter... he was a daredevil... The first half of the 20th Century saw Europe, and in particular Paris littered with genius in the arts. Some practitioners had one arrow in their bow string, others had a quiver full of arrows.
N
one more than Jean Cocteau (French 1889-1963) writer, poet, philosopher, designer, playwright, film maker and artist. Most of the well-connected Cocteau's artistic output surfaced as decorative works in all manner of drawn media. As a practising bi-sexual, he had two markets - straight and gay. Openly gay drawings proliferated in Paris from the twenties onwards. Cocteau had numerous affairs with both sexes, from Princess Natalie Paley to actor Jean Marais, which lasted 25 years until Cocteau's death in 1963. Around 1959 a young man from a murky background of poverty and crime in Cordoba Spain, took Europe by storm as a bullfighter. Manuel Benitez A.K.A El Cordobes (The Cordovan) turned traditional bullfighting on its head. This ruggedly handsome man was no stylist as a bullfighter. He was a daredevil, gutsy fighter who proved it by leaving blood on the sand of almost every Corrida he fought. Panned by the fight Cognescenti, media and critics, he became the people's champion. He was world famous even before his first bullfight at Spain's bullfighting mecca 'Las Ventas' in Madrid in 1964.
Cocteau, who died in 1963 idolised and championed the young Spaniard. He was one of the first to laud his bravery in articles, also drawing him several times. The first fight at 'Las Ventas' against the bull 'Impulsivo' ended in a severe goring nearly ending El Cordobes' life. Undeterred, he was fighting again three weeks later. He finally retired in 2000. Today, aged 80-years he lives in seclusion near Cordoba in Spain. Leigh Murphy - 2016

atching Cinderella – is like stepping into a wonderful world of magic where your inner child will run free. This pantomime is the anticipated annual panto to be brought to audiences by Noosa Arts Theatre and it looks poised to follow in the success of the Theatre’s 2016 pantomime, Old Mother Hubbard. Cinderella is ultimately a light and fun show full of colour and splendour and is an adaptation of the classic fairy tale and rags-to-riches story. Pantomimes are traditionally a mix of music, theatre and dance and they typically encourage the audience to interact with the actors. The actors often encourage everyone to boo and hiss at the bad guys and to support and cheer on the good guys as well as keep a watchful eye out for evil characters and the like. Pantomimes are traditionally pitched at children but there are enough jokes and fun things so that it can appeal to anyone aged 3 to 103. Cleverly directed Susan Dearnley and featuring musical direction by Diana Thomson, Noosa Arts Theatre’s production of Cinderella will feature twists and turns, music, mirth, magic, mayhem and madcap audience participation to ensure a wonderful and entertaining afternoon / evening that the whole family will enjoy. Noosa Arts Theatres’ production of Cinderella will envelop you in memories of Cinderella’s magical transformation, the splendour of the ball, the handsome prince, the dramatic exit as the clock strikes midnight, the hunt for the owner of the sparkling slipper…. And the glorious happy ending. Cinderella, a must see production at Noosa Arts Theatre, January 2017.

As the immediate Past President of the theatre, she oversaw the extensive renovations carried out over the past 4 years, and in 2016 she was made a Life Member of the theatre for her outstanding contribution. Dylan Thomas died in New York in 1953, aged only 39. The melancholy coda to Under Milk Wood’s 20-year gestation is that Thomas would never hear a Welsh cast perform his final work and would never be aware of the impact his play would make on the radio. A Whale of a trip TO THE RICH MARINE TREASURES
Raja Ampat, donned the 'Galapagos of Indonesia', is located near Australia and is one of the richest marine environments on Ear th - it's such a spectacular travel location, one of our guests is coming back for the second year in a row! Vessel Pindito
O
ne of the trip's greatest highlights will be the chance to track Sperm Whales and pods of Killer Whales (watch the video), as well as False Killer Whales, Melon-headed Whales, occasional Blue Whale, Bryde's Whales ... in fact, a monumental 16 species of whale and dolphin were seen on last year's trip!!! This is all within a stone throw of an island paradise where we have chance to see and photograph exotic creatures like the resplendent Red Bird of Paradise and snorkel with Manta Rays. Edi Frommenwiler was a mechanic, long-distance lorry driver, then adventure tour guide for 10 years, before he decided to embark on the journey of his life and build a 38m long sailing ship in one of the world’s most remote places. It was 1991 on the island of Pulau Laut off Kalimantan when he and his team dug a dry dock and on 31 March, laid the first timber keel of the Pindito. Before crowd-sourcing became all the rage, Edi garnered support from friends and families, to fund the ship’s construction - despite having no previous expertise in ship-building. A team of 25 people endured ten months of hard work before the Pindito was first floated in January 1992. Edi was attracted by West Papua’s wilderness and for 10 years his was the only tour boat in a region which is barely populated. Raja Ampat has been referred to as Indonesia’s Galapagos. Scientific research expeditions, supported by Edi, have found a level of species diversity rivalling anywhere on Earth. The islands were formed from old coral formations, atop limestone, that has been lifted above the seabed by geological processes. The dense network of currents and tides, undersea formations and islands, create an amazingly complex ecosystem. Since his first dive, Edi has been particularly fascinated by the tiny creatures that live among the coral reef and its animals - Skeleton Shrimps, Nudibranchs, Hairy Octopuses and Pygmy Seahorses - and from up to four dives a day for the last 25
years, has amassed an unrivalled catalogue of film and photographs. The diving and snorkelling in Raja Ampat is extraordinary. Gorgonian fans and soft corals reach the surface, where elsewhere they’d be in the depths. Currents from offshore attract giant Manta Rays as well as an incredible diversity of whales and dolphins. There are between 80 and 90 species of whale and dolphin in the world. Indonesian waters have about a third of these and a quarter are seen in as little as one 12-day trip on the Pindito: Pan-tropical Spotted Dolphins, Spinner Dolphins, Fraser’s Dolphins, Sperm Whale, Blue Whale, Killer Whale, Melon-headed Whale, False Killer Whale and Beaked Whales, to name but a few.
“When I star ted in 1992, I saw dolphins in the area but had no idea there were big whales around in Indonesian waters”, says Edi. “When I encountered the first whales, for me, it was a real ‘wow’ experience … in 1992. A very exciting experience”. Despite spending his life on the sea, Edi never had time to watch them so he has the idea for a trip and was introduced to whale expert Benjamin Kahn, when he decided to see if he could combine diving and whale-watching together. It turned out to be a very successful idea. “Nowadays we know we have Orcas and even Blue Whales in the area”, says Edi, I have seen Orcas 8-10 times in the Banda Sea and Raja Ampat. The reaction of the guests is like, Blue Whales, Orcas .. this is something very special! Even Sperm Whales … on every trip. We can hear them, and often see them”. When we visit a place, we can look at it like a picture, in two dimensions. When you visit somewhere with such depth (literally) and diversity, and do this with a passionate network of guides able to reveal secrets of the tiniest to largest inhabitants, culture and environment, numerous dimensions interweave to create a bewildering but magical fabric - experience isn’t about knowledge, it’s about getting to know a place. The first Wildiaries expedition with Edi to Raja Ampat sets sail in February 2017. Led by Sea Turtle Foundation’s Tim Harvey and Wildiaries’ Simon Mustoe, it will join Edi to experience Raja Ampat’s miracles of nature … seek out the tiny colourful inhabitants of Edi’s world, search for the largest predators that ever lived on Earth and discover rare birds of paradise. If you've wondered about what it would be like joining a Wildiaries trip, this would be a superb way to start and both Tim Harvey and I would love to have you along. www.wildiaries.com

By Nicole Madigan Andrew Lloyd Webber, Julian Lennon, Elton John, the King and Queen of Spain, the Sultan of Brunei, Claudia Schiffer, Kirsty Bertarelli – these are just some of the names in a throng of diplomats, royalty and celebrities, who have enjoyed meals prepared by Noosa’s own Brendan Weatherill.
T
he most memorable meals I cooked were for someone I cannot name, who ate on the back deck of a superyacht with a private performance by Pavarotti on a Private Croatian Island in a 1000 year old stone amphitheatre,” says the renowned chef, turned events planner, turned real estate tycoon professional. From the age of 5, Brendan knew he was destined for cooking fine cuisine.“My Great Grandmother was a cook on a shearing station and my Auntie is a chef so cooking must be in my blood.” Apart from cooking I have always loved entertaining. Brendan was working in hospitality by the age of 8. He studied home economics in secondary school, leaving at 15 to commence a chef’s apprenticeship. “I completed my apprenticeship in three and a half years and worked in over 37 restaurants in Noosa and the Sunshine Coast in the early years of my culinary profession,” he says. “My goal was to travel the world with a trade, become well known and respected in the industry and then own my own restaurant.” And that’s exactly what he did. After enjoying immense success working in more than 20 countries, he returned to Noosa to open Dish on Thomas, which was acclaimed as 'Best BYO Restaurant' by the Australian Good Food & Travel Guide in 2003. Despite preparing frequent meals for celebrities, business tycoons and royalty, Brendan says the highlight of his cooking career was being able to enjoy his success with his family. “I have so many great memories of working all over Noosa and the broader Sunshine coast restaurants. “I have worked with so many great chefs, and hospitality professionals, travelling the world with my wife and working along the way. “We have together had so many experiences and sharing these with my wife and children is the biggest highlight.” While he was undoubtedly a talented chef, it was Brendan’s tenacity and communication skills that enabled him to quickly develop a solid reputation, allowing him to cook for, with and surrounded by the world’s finest. “Everything that I have set out to do I have accomplished. pursued every career with determination and professionalism and set myself high goals to achieve.” It was through his position as a restaurateur, that Brendan discovered a flare for sales, prompting him to venture into a wide variety of alternative careers outside of cooking. Brendan is also recognised as being a major event Promoter and Producer of his own Music festivals, Golden Days and The Big Pineapple Music Festival, and having recently worked for Ironman Asia Pacific as Operations manager. “As a restauranteur you constantly need to sell your product. I was selling events to major stakeholders and always got the outcome I envisaged. “Selling myself to secure international jobs proved to me that sales was an attribute that I possessed. While Brendan acknowledges the large leap between careers, he says the characteristics required to succeed - business acumen and communication skills - are common to all industries, including his most recent as a real estate sales agent with Richardson and Wrench Noosa. “I knew that my local knowledge and diversity throughout multiple industries would be a benefit and the local, national and International network that I have will prove to be an asset in this business. “ “I sold the first property in 16 hours from getting the listing, the second property was sold within 48 hours of getting the listing which sold for the area record. “I have already had a successful start and there will be many more to come.” According to Brendan, whether he’s cooking or selling, his best trait is being able to create and coordinate the outcomes that he envisages. “I have chosen a lifestyle change, the flexibility with the work and obviously the income.” “I get to network, achieve successful outcomes and promote the region that I believe is the best in the world. I am able to relate to people on so many different levels. I am selling a quality product that everyone wants and find this quite easy to do.” So far so good. “You never know what the future holds, I always keep my options open, but at this point in time I am aiming to be the best in the industry in the area. “I continue to list quality properties every week and this is growing my reputation with trust and respect from my clients and buyers.” “Watch this space.”
