La Chaine des Rotisseurs Sunshine Coast Bailliage dinner... Australia's Bailli Délégué Norm Harrison and his wife Serena, flew in from Adelaide to support the night, and joined with members from the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast committee members, Léon Naus, Vice Argentier, Kaylene Murray, Vice Consellor Gastronomique; Andrea Ravezzani, Bailli, were all there to enjoy the festivities and guide new members through the ceremony of the world's oldest dining club. La Chaine has over 25,000 members around the world, and is represented in over 80 countries, bringing together enthusiasts who share the same values of quality dining, the encouragement of the culinary arts and the pleasures of the table. The distinctive character of the association is to bring together amateurs and professionals, from all over the world, whether they are hoteliers, restaurateurs,

Noosa Springs Peter Lehmann Wine Dinner Guests at Noosa Springs recent wine dinner were presented with an evening of fabulous food, exceptional wines, what more could a happy gourmand want? With a menu that included Seared Hervey Bay scallop in a half shell with petite herbs, finger lime, and candied peanut; Moya Valley chicken and pork terrine, pistachio, leek, asparagus puree and smoked fennel; Barnyard quail, wilted silver beet, pine nuts, poached pear, gorgonzola and a Spanish sherry reduction; Confit of duck maryland, saffron pumpkin, fennel spiced baby beetroot, confit cherries and crispy enoki mushrooms; the evening finished with a Chocolate mess, white & dark chocolate mousse, dark chocolate sphere and salted caramel fudge. This indulgence of exceptional food by Exec Chef, Aden Moriarty and his team was highlighted by seven perfectly complementing wines by Peter Lehmann. Can't wait for the next wine dinner - even if I didn't win the magnum of Shiraz on the night.

Johanna De Maine Exhibition at Cairncross Gallery Glasses clinked as visitors to the exciting 'Fragments of the Sublime' exhibition of Johanna De Maine's stunning works wandered around the gallery -admiring the delicate pieces and discussing the finer aspects of the new collection. Dutch-born De Maine has an international reputation for her finely created porcelain. Not bad for a Sunshine Coast local! Her latest works offer viewers a look inside the mind of a true perfectionist, an artist with a fine hand at sand carving, gold lustres, and fine brush and glazing techniques that go way beyond the norm. Her interpretation of her environment is depicted in the decoration - the Glasshouse Mountains, pineapple plantations, Woodford Folk Festival, and Pumicestone Passage. Johanna's works are always on show at Cairncross Gallery and well worth the trip to view them.

A STAR, BOTH HOME AND AWAY Isla Fisher on a life of laughs, love and little people.

S

Story: SIMONE LEE ummer Bay, from Thor heartthrob Chris Hemsworth to True Blood charmer Ryan Kwanten. In fact, so illustrious are the careers of Home and Away alumni, that their humble beached beginnings are often eclipsed by later work, as is the case with original Seven Network sweetheart Isla Fisher.

Blazing an early trail for Thor and co., Isla made a memorable impression as Shannon Reed on the New South Wales soap institution back in the nineties, though she reveals it is as the kooky and adorable Gloria in Wedding Crashers for which she is best known. “Like most people who have moved through that system, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Home and Away. It is still viewed as a brilliant platform on which to develop and move forward and I was lucky after leaving to get a few roles that worked for me… they kept me in the spotlight before I Heart Huckabees and Wedding Crashes came along.

“If you don’t get those roles, your shelf-life out in the ‘real world’ can be short, so fortune went my way there. Yet no matter what I do or where I go, I’ll always be a Home and Away girl. They were such fun times.” Since landing her first film stateside – as Mary Jane in the live-action Scooby Doo – the diminutive beauty has always ‘brought the charm’ in lighting up the screen alongside Tinseltown’s biggest names – the likes of Michael Caine, Leonardo DiCaprio and Amy Adams in Now You See Me, The Great Gatsby and Nocturnal Animals. However, Since meeting Sacha

Baron Cohen 16 years ago and giving birth to their first child (daughter Olive in 2007), family life has taken priority for the cool, collected actress. Marrying the British comedian in 2010, and subsequently welcoming Elula (seven) and three-year-old Montgomery into the world, her close brood has comfortably taken top spot in her life. “It’s strange, you grow up thinking career is the most important thing, and you make every possible move to give yourself the best chance of success. And you’re involved in the throes of that for a while, and it’s great. But when kids come along,” she continues, “ all that gets thrown out the window – it’s like the things you imagined would be the most important, in actual fact aren’t at all.” Subsequently, we have seen considerably less of the flame-haired beauty on our screens. And while her return in TV drama Arrested Development has set the tone for a busier 2019, with The Beach Bum and The Starling set for release, Fisher believes long-term plans are not for her.“There is no plan at all, is the truth,” she laughs. “I’ll only do work that I really love, and even then, I mightn’t do it because I don’t want to be away from my kids. They’ve always been my priority over work, and I can’t really imagine at time when that will change. “With my career now, I try to keep it all very relaxed and not put too much pressure on myself. I’m actually one of those people who thinks you can’t have everything. Something has to give; you can’t stretch yourself to the point where it’s impossible to live.” continues next page...

Still, it’s hard to imagine a life more desirable than Isla’s; even day-to-day, the Fisher/Baron Cohen household must be pretty magical given the comedic edge the couple possess. “It’s a really fun house with a lot of laughs, a lot of noise, I love that,” she confirms flashing that bright smile.“Sasha’s comedy can be very leftfield at times and it takes some getting used to, but he’s always got a joke in him.” Despite being something of a Hollywood power couple, Isla and Baron Cohen remain on the periphery of the Los Angeles circuit. Part of this is likely down to the nature of the Borat creator’s work, which requires him to retreat into a creative space for months at a time in order to be able to conjure deep, detailed, convincing characters. But their reclusiveness is also provoked to Isla’s inherent disdain for the spotlight as she doggedly strives to maintain that elusive boundary between private and public lives.

Despite being something of a Hollywood power couple, Isla and Baron Cohen remain on the periphery of the Los Angeles circuit...

“I honestly hold the opinion that you won’t get more people going see your movie just because they know what you ate for dinner,” she laughs.“It doesn’t affect anything. Or perhaps they know you’re dating, they know the personal details of your life, how your kids are doing. You know, it doesn’t affect your appeal in a movie. So why court that kind of attention in the first place - just live your life and do your job like everybody else does. “I really believe that. You get, ‘well it’s part of the contract as an actor,’ no it isn’t. It doesn’t matter at all,” she says, before adding dryly, “And there are plenty of people who crave the limelight, who want all that, even if they say they don’t. Give it to them, focus on them, let them shine. I wouldn’t want to steal from them.” Given Fisher’s natural luminescence, it’s likely the actress doesn’t quite appreciate the plight of mere mortals who don’t still possess a youthful glow aged 42, lighting up the screen without even trying. Not surprisingly, the prospect of ageing

ISLA’S QUICK FIRE Q&A: What drew you to acting? ISLA: It was a lot to do with moving around when I was younger. We lived in Oman when I was born, then went back to Scotland where my parents are from, and then on to Australia when I was six. It was quite the nomadic lifestyle. I guess acting has a lot of nomadic elements in it too. So then when I would go to a new school, and to make new friends you immediately rely on your ability to entertain and draw new people in, so acting came into that from a very early age.

A STAR, BOTH HOME AND AWAY

So you were the class clown? ISLA: I don’t know if I was the class clown, but yes, I liked clowning around! It’s how I made friends. I remember my report cards would always say, ‘she loves to makes jokes in class and is less keen on learning…’!

continued from previous page

doesn’t faze the actress; she admits to caring very little about appearances. Ask her how she maintains her figure after three children, she extols the virtues of breastfeeding. Try to extract her tips on how she keeps that Celtic complexion so vibrant – Isla was raised in her parents’ native Scotland until the family moved to Perth when she was six – and she will confess to often forgetting to even wash her face, let alone embarking on some complex nightly skincare routine. Isla does have one weakness however, fashion.“When you’re around Patricia Field from Sex and the City it’s difficult not start taking more of an interest in designers, styles and cuts,” she admits. “These days I’ll look out for Stella McCartney, Phillip Lim, Tom Ford and Vivienne Westwood. My size means many designers don’t work for me anyway, but on the high street stores like Top Shop and Mango do a great job in catering for any budget. “Ultimately, fashion is very reflective of life itself,” she concludes, “if a little less important – we’re all looking for good things, we all need to feel good. And we all deserve to feel good!” •

12

NoosaStyleLiving

What are your beauty secrets? ISLA: I’m rubbish at that stuff, don’t ask me! I was never the girl who sat at the mirror with all the lights around it... I don’t really care as long as I feel good and look as if I’ve made a small effort. That will do me.

What’s Sacha like to work with? ISLA: He’s a perfectionist and he will do anything possible to get the joke, which is something I’ve never experienced before. And I know he’s my husband, my partner of 15 years - we have three kids together so I should know him pretty well but I felt I learned a lot from working together. I’d never experienced just how good he is at improvisation, there is no one better, and you have to up your game to keep up.

b u r c S . . . e f i L Not every creature is fun to play with… Story: Naomi Hansen

I

In the world of veterinary emergency and critical care - the onset of Spring comes with a foreboding, as all the venomous critters that Australia is infamous for emerge from their winter hides. The ticks and snakes are out in force this Spring and their venom is lethal, not only to us but also our curious, unsuspecting, four-legged companions.

Domestication has sheltered our pets and stripped them of their need for the basic instincts that keep them safe in the wild. In return, we have loyal, loving companions that see no harm in frolicking in the undergrowth, and curiously chasing the slithering brown snake into the dam. Life may still be ‘OK’ for them at this point, if somewhere in their brain the red warning light flickered on ‘danger, danger’ - but alas, our pets are all about the game - and they don’t understand that snakes are hungry and angry, and not interested in playing. This time of year the snakes are angry and the ticks are multiplying at an enormous rate, so we have to be aware of our pets living and playing environment, and actively protect them from themselves.

I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE ONE OF OUR PATIENTS WHO LEARNED THIS LESSON THE HARD WAY: BENNY

Benny

Benny presented to the AEC Noosa Civic around 10.30am Saturday 1st September (the first day of Spring) after following his nose to the shores of a local dam, harbouring an unwanted inhabitant. The amount of snake venom in Benny’s system was not compatible with life (i.e. a lethal dose), and within 60 minutes of presentation, Benny stopped breathing. The AEC team were quick in their response and Benny was resuscitated and placed on a ventilator, an artificial respirator. The snake venom detection kit confirmed BROWN SNAKE envenomation, and we started Benny on an intravenous infusion of polyvalent (tiger/brown) anti-venom. Benny stayed with us over the weekend as we continued to intensively monitor his progress. Monday evening, we gave Benny a stern talking to about the pitfalls of playing with snakes - and discharged him back to his family. Benny is very fortunate, his mother was quick to identify a change in his demeanor and acted appropriately. Please be hyperaware of your pets this Spring, and ensure your tick prevention is current and your pets are kept away from our slithering fauna.

An impressive line-up will be on offer, with the internationally renowned author, healer and energy medicine pioneer Inna Segal returning as a keynote speaker. The event is also excited to welcome for the first time, Hollywood actor and EMotion star Ty Hungerford to share his wisdom on

Shhh! Secrets previews ‘Celeste’: A divine ring collection... Luxe jewellery retailer, Secrets Shhh, has distilled the Milky Way into four heavenly dress rings we call the Celeste collection. Designed as one, two, three or four-rows a piece, each divine ring is a constellation of concentric halos formed from tiny diamond simulants. This cluster of “stars” amplifies the light bouncing off each luminous stone. “Every intricate detail is on show in these four truly luxurious designs, which are handfinished by our master jewellers,” Secrets stylist, Kim, explains. “She’s equally brilliant in yellow or rose gold,” Kim says. “The beauty of this collection is each of the four designs can be made-to-order in your ring size in 10ct or 14ct yellow, rose or white gold.” What is a Secrets diamond simulant? Secrets believes our diamond simulants offer the world a “better beautiful”. A simulation is an imitation, and we create only the best by combining the earth’s finest minerals and the latest in science and technology. Virtually indistinguishable from a mined diamond to the naked eye, our Secrets diamond simulants are equivalent to a D to F colour diamond. Considering diamond colour is universally graded from highest (D) to lowest (Z), visually, our diamond simulants share the same qualities as the absolute finest colourless stones in the world. They’re visibly whiter and brighter than most mined diamonds, which are generally a H or I colour (or less). So, you can see our diamond simulants are equivalent in appearance to the rarest white diamonds unearthed.

SWEET PERFUMES & MANLY SCENTS SCENTS

JOY by Dior "JOY by Dior expresses the remarkable feeling of joy by providing an olfactive interpretation of light. What I mean by that, is that this perfume resembles certain pointillist paintings that are rich with a precise, yet not too obvious, technique. Each of us perceives light, without thinking about it, in our own way. This perfume is constructed in a similar manner thanks to multiple nuances and myriad facets, which lead to a crystalclear fragrance expression. It required a lot of time, development and abstraction, but in the end, it has an immediate and lively presence." François Demachy, Dior Perfumer-Creator

Milk & Co Body Oil Milk & Co's luxurious new blend is lightly scented with lavender essential oil and features a combination of plant extracts and vitamins to nourish and protect skin from environmental stressors. Live brighter. Go native. Ultraceuticals for your Ultra man… Men’s skin is usually thicker, with larger pores producing more sebum and often resulting in an oily complexion. Despite increased sebum, the thicker epidermis also requires more hydration and exfoliation, as layers of dead skin cells build up, even resulting in areas of dryness. With the Ultra For Men skincare pack it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 to cleanse, treat and protect to keep your skin in the best shape possible with minimal fuss. Ultraceuticals salon partner, Face of Man Grooming Lounge says: “Men these days want to look younger and fresher - and have taken the time to educate themselves on the best way to do so. The majority of our clients request face peels because they are here for a result.” What do they find the top 3 skin care mistakes men make? 1. Not wearing sunscreen on a daily basis. 2. Not using a lighter, hydrating lotion over a heavier moisturiser if they have oily skin. 3. Over scrubbing their skin. This limited-edition pack contains: Ultra Balancing Gel Cleanser 200ml, Even Skintone Serum 30ml, Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ Mattifying 25ml in a stylish skincare bag. RRP: $165

nd while the journey’s destination can’t be changed, the experience can be made that little bit easier, especially for those who are unable to remain in their homes during those final

moments. At Katie Rose Cottage, guests are offered a ‘one step from home’ specialised palliative care service, in a beautiful environment - a stunning home set in three acres of manicured gardens. “A short while ago a lovely lady came to visit the Hospice, to make a donation in memory of her late husband,” says chairperson Carol Raye. “Her grandson was with her and whilst taking a look around he gently said to his grandmother,‘my memories of Pop dying would have been so much nicer if he had been here’ - what a lovely sentiment from a young man!” Katie Rose Cottage Hospice was established as a new company and charity in 2016, following the closure in December 2015 of the former hospice. “Our charity, which was able to secure the name ‘Katie Rose Cottage’, with the blessing of the original founders, commenced operations with two Op Shops in Tewantin and Cooroy in December 2016 to raise funds to re-open a hospice on the Sunshine Coast.” After receiving a generous donation of $1 million from a local family whose wish was for the charity to purchase a forever home, the Beddington Road, Doonan residence was purchased. Katie Rose Cottage also offers counselling and other allied health care services, and thanks to the generosity of many members of the local community, the service is free to guests. “We have been able to make the necessary bathroom renovations and house modifications, furnish the home and fit it out with medical equipment and supplies along with preparing the gardens.” Having been operating a Day Hospice service since October last year, this month Katie Rose Cottage has transitioned to a 24/7 nursing care service for the terminally ill. “We are all very proud of our achievement, this is what we have all been working toward.” The model of care offers 24/7 Registered Nurses, supported by volunteer Personal Carers and volunteer support staff. “Today we have almost 200 dedicated volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of our charity and we could not operate without their dedication and support. “Our volunteer gardening team, about 18 in the group, come along every Thursday to tend to the

gardens and along with planting and maintaining the garden, they also have plans to renovate and redesign the grounds. “A wonderful team who have great comradery. They have even established a lovely ‘garden café’ where they stop and enjoy their morning tea break!” Fittingly, the logo for Katie Rose Cottage is the Forget Me Not flower, chosen by the original co-founders. The new owners have carried on this tradition, through the use of the logo, but also through the introduction of an annual Forget Me Not day, where locals can remember someone they have loved and lost. “A great chance to reflect on our loved ones and raise money to support the hospice.”

. . . t S s g n i t s a H The iconic Noosa street has been abuzz with fashion for decades, known for its high-end fashion, local stores, quirky creations and beautiful beachwear.

W

hen Bay Village was first established back in 1986 with a number of classic, exclusive stores, such as Josephine’s Exclusive Swimwear, T’Arnos Ladies Fashion and Armano Menswear. Another original tenant of Bay Village was Diana’s of Noosa. While Josephine’s T’Arnos and Armano have all left the building, Diana’s of Noosa remains as one of the few originals from the area. “Shops in Hasting Street were mostly locally owned in the early days, not many are left,” says Diana’s current owner Rhonda Bedford. “Many have been taken over by multinationals “There are a few stores still left, such as Signature, Isabella's, Go Bananas plus a few more.” Diana’s of Noosa was named after the exclusive shoe store’s original owner, and purchased by Rhonda in 1994. “I moved from Sydney in 1990 to retire but felt that I needed to do something,” says Ms Bedford. “I always had a passion for fashion but not for shoes, but you learn very early when it is your own business. Rhonda travelled overseas to purchase for the store for the first time in 1997. It was during that trip that she discovered that the biggest sellers were Stuart Wietzman and Arche. “The brands from overseas are exclusive to Diana’s, most of them can not be found anywhere else in Australia.” Ms Bedford says she has her customers front of mind when she buys stock during her overseas visits.“I buy for all our regular customers, who come from everywhere - Noosa, interstate and even overseas. “They all come in when they first arrive to see if we are still here - and always say they will pop in and see us as soon as they have unpacked “I buy Stuart Weitzman, Arche, Attilio Giusti Baldinini, Gardenia and many more.” It’s not just the locals that love Diana’s shoes - many celebrities have

Rhonda Bedford of Dianas Shoe been spotted wearing the stores exclusive brands. “Stuart Weitzman are worn by many celebrities,” says Rhonda. “Plus Royals, including Kate and Meghan.” Rhonda says her staff have been pivotal for growing the business, having been with the company for more than 11 years, and getting to know all the regular clients who frequent the store. They also help keep up with the technological changes to the fashion and shopping scene. “Things have changed a lot since 1994, when there was no social media,” says Rhonda. “Of course, we now have Facebook and Instagram and have a great website which we update daily.” Diana’s of Noosa is one of the longest-running retail shops to stay in the one spot in Hastings Street, and one of very few that have the owner working instore. “It’s hard work but very rewarding.” said Rhonda “As for the future, I am not sure what is going to happen. Will have to wait and see. “For now, I am off to Milan to buy for Summer 2019.”

e p g n i r i Insp Sandy Bolton MP Independent Member for Noosa

MP Life – Noosa Style! To kick off the first of many conversations, the dilemma of a challenge – quick fixes versus solutions, is one that applies to every realm of our world.

T

he ‘behind the scenes’ world of an Independent MP differs greatly to one attached to a political party. Unfettered, unfiltered and undiluted – the balancing of schedules to address the current and emerging issues impacting residents, against improvement of policy and legislation to diminish or address issues in Parliament. It is during the midnight hour that thought must go into the important development and implementation of solutions to address our challenges. Prevention is far more cost effective than looking for and managing cures. To tackle one of our historical problems, I recently hosted a pilot to test run an innovative process of thought combining rapid and human centred design. 30 stakeholders – from representatives of our key industries to school principals, impact investors to social innovators, were thrown into the Peregian Hub with a task – to come up with a solution to our youth unemployment. Easy? Definitely not, as it has been a challenge that has alluded Noosa for at least 3 decades. Solvable. Yes. Led by an ‘agile attitude’ task masker, Noosa ignited with panellists Matt Golinski, Michael Donovan, Chris Boden, Michael Roelofs and Gary Swaneopol who roamed the ‘personas’ to challenge change-makers to come up with actions that formed the solution. Time limit? 4 hours. Now one could say it is impossible to resolve long standing, historical issues in a decade, let alone 4hrs. However, we need to ask why? With all the statistics, analysis, research, initiatives and time taken in not resolving this – it makes perfect sense to challenge even that concept – doesn’t it? The secret ingredient in this process is called community activism. No – it is not waving placards, it is about taking the very simple aspect of ‘if it is to be, it is up to we” and tweaking it with the capabilities and acceptance of innovation as the igniter, not a by-product. When you have 30 stakeholders who all form part of the equation, and with their commitment, action and will – you have a very good chance of success. Community activism, innovation of process, human centred design and 240 minutes of chaos. Sounds like a perfect day (or midnight moment) in an Independent MP’s life! Until next time….

Santa’s Little Helpers - Lorraine Kenway and friends

And now, for something completely different… Monty Python would have tagged this situation perfectly. When Noosa Classy Lady owner and Santa's Classy Helpers driving force, Lorraine Kenway decides to do something for others, there is no stopping her determination and resolve.

A

nd so it was, that on a cold and yes, wet - Saturday night recently, Lorraine and her trusty cohorts Anne, Natalie and Robin, placed their cardboard 'mattresses' on the cold, hard footpath outside Lorraine's classy boutique, and settled in for a night of sleeping rough - to highlight the plight of families in need in our region. Each year, Santa's Classy Helpers work tirelessly to raise money. They hold an annual golf game at Noosa Springs; several lunches, dinners, movie nights, and of course their monthly afternoon teas, where attendees bring along non-perishable goodies as requested, to add to the storeroom in anticipation of the December 'shopping day', held at The J, where 300 families in-need are invited to fill a shopping trolley with food, bathroom and washing necessities, clothing, fresh fruit and vegetables - and presents for children, all to make their Christmas a little more special.

The footpath evening raised a staggering $9,000.00 for the annual Christmas event, but more funds are desperately needed to accomplish the annual appeal, so if you are passing Noosa Classy Lady in Gympie Terrace at any time, please make a donation of either cash (no donation is too small), or new goods, groceries, toys etc to add to their collection for Christmas.

e ople... Noosa Heads mum and daughter win national Sustainability AusMumpreneur Award... Noosa local, Sharona Webb, co-founder of GreenAddict is a mother to three kids aged 2, 8 and 11, who before relocating here, used to live in Perth, where she started a local cleaning company with her mum.

A

fter having my second child in 2010, my mum Tara and I started a little cleaning business in Perth, before we knew it we had 10 staff.” she explains. Our cleaning business used the usual cleaning products to clean our clients' homes. Sharona and her team including her Mum found that they were starting to get become ill. “Initially we were using all the typical chemical cleaning agents - bleach, spray and wipe etc. Then we noticed that we and our staff were always getting sick; my mum even contracted shingles." she said This led the mother and daughter to search for a natural commercial cleaning solution. “We trialed everything on the market - and each product was either not 100% natural, it didn’t work, or wasn't commercially viable". Tara, who has a chemistry background started mixing up different formulations in her own laundry, and over a few years, developed a range that worked. The brand was born out of a need for a safe, green product for Sharona’s commercial cleaning business. Sharona sold a few products to family and friends, and clients would love the products smell and how they cleaned, so they would want to purchase them for daily use too. Life got busy. Tara studied yoga and Sharona was a full-time mum looking after her two daughters, while her husband was in the SAS and deployed overseas numerous times. Fast forward to 2017, and Sharona had just had her 3rd child, Jake; when she decided to make up a batch of ‘here, there & everywhere’ purely at that stage because her family wanted some. She then began supplying her family and friends, and started slowly working on the business part-time, while Tim worked fifo overseas in oil & gas. Sharona then worked on packaging, website, testing and implemented process, and at the beginning of this year she started stocking her products in a local eco-friendly business, Bio Shop Noosa. Sharona says that she will always be grateful for the support of local small businesses. GreenAddict is now stocked in pharmacies, gourmet groceries, online retailers, boutique eco retailers and have a commercial distributor. All stockists have the same sustainable ethos and values that Sarona and the brand have. GreenAddict is used in Resorts, cafes, day cares, homes, restaurants and offices. “Our approach is 'because good planets are hard to find', we believe in cherishing and honouring this one. I believe that is our responsibility to make changes today for a better tomorrow.”

An Aladdin's cave of possibilities in the Junction... If you’ve ever meandered past the little Aladdin’s cave of mystery and delight, George Magasic’s Jewellery, Antiques and Collectables (near the cinema) in Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Junction, you’ve no doubt been intrigued by who and what might wait within.

I

t seems that a seachange from Sydney to Noosa some 18 years ago, brought George Magasic and his love of the unusual, quaint, interesting - and in some cases hidden treasures, to his quirky, old-world treasure emporium in Noosa Junction.

George’s love of selling, buying and trading antiques and collectables, whether they be fine jewellery, comic books or artworks, porcelain or rare pieces with historical significance - you will find something to suit all penchants. With over 37 years experience in the trade, George is also the perfect person to evaluate your ‘possibly’ priceless treasures, handed down by family members over the years. Your grandmother’s porcelain vase or grandfather’s war memorabilia could be more than just another item on your mantlepiece gathering dust - they could be your opportunity to take that long-planned overseas trip or set you on the path to retirement. And, George is always happy to take a look and give you an honest estimate of their value, whether great or small. So, if you’re ready to step inside and be delighted by the shelves and cabinets overflowing with possibilities, be prepared to take your time and explore. Find us on Google Maps You never know what George may have just discovered.

Brace yourself with Buckle | 1922 Once serving as a purely functional item, as a replacement for a belt, men’s braces have been around for centuries. In the 17th century, Frenchmen would tie straps of cloth to their undergarments to hold them up and in Britain, braces made their commercial debut in 1820. Tropical trends Pineapples are a must-have print in both men and women’s fashion and these funky braces are no exception. Pair with a plain white shirt and chinos for a fun daytime look. a fairy tale weddi They say a picture is worth a thousand words… and that is why we are going to let these stunning photographs tell us the story of an amazing journey of love and shared dreams. Words: Kaylene Murray

Sunshine Coast newly-weds, Lisa Curry and Mark Tabone tied the knot last May - in a romantic ceremony held on the grounds of their beautiful 25 hectre property, in the lush countryside of Maleny, on top of the Blackall Range.

T

he couple were surrounded by their blended families, friends and celebrities, including several cast members from Lisa's time on I'm a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, and Lisa's first swimming coach, Harry Gallagher - in a magical ceremony under bright blue skies.

Lisa's three children, daughters Morgan and Jaimi, son Jett, (even baby grandson Flynn was on-hand), - as well as Mark's son Jesse (his best man), and daughters Tahlia, Aliana and Leticia, were part of the all-white ceremony, adding a very warm element to the proceedings. Triple Olympian swimmer and now health and fitness exponent, Lisa proved that opposites definitely do attract, when she fell in love with professional entertainer, Mark Tabone. Their love grew through a shared love of VW Kombi vans (they have a matching set - pink for her and blue for him). Not quite the picture we would have envisioned. No slow-motion running along the white, sandy beach at First Point in Noosa Heads; no athletic diving through the waves and coming up with

beads of saltwater slowly dripping down their faces - not even a quick morning surf. But love won out and their shared adventure began. As Lisa explained, "Mark gets me…he makes my heart sing." "He even listens to my stories, laughs at my jokes, and best of all he fixes things." And, Mark chimed in to tell us about his unconditional love for his wife, "Lisa is beautiful both inside and out; we share the same dreams - she is my soul mate." After two years of searching for the right property to call home, checklists - and wish lists - a wedding was planned. Lisa chose local seamstress, Marilyn Crystelle to create her stunning wedding gowns - yes there were two - from three incredible lengths of stunningly beaded, French lace fabric, that had been bought in the hope of them being perfect for her gown. Marilyn added silk ribbon flowers for the bodice and 15 layers of beautiful French tulle in every shade of pink for the ball gown skirt. Many of you will have seen Lisa's first wedding gown in the Women's Weekly feature, but you probably haven't seen her second wedding gown, which even Mark didn't see until Lisa's big reveal in Gozo, where Mark grew up. Their exotic travel book, honeymoon took them to New Delhi, Agra, Cairo, Gozo, Malta (where Mark grew up as a child) and Abu Dhabi, with the ever-

ing.. But love won out and their shared adventure began...

Lisa&Mark romantic Mark constantly photographing the mind-blowing locations as a backdrop to his beautiful wife. These spectacular shots have been shared with us by Lisa and Mark, and all were taken by themselves - with the help of a trusty tripod and the remote on their iPhone. Now that they are back home on the Sunshine Coast, Mark is back entertaining at functions all over the coast and around Australia, with his acclaimed Legends Show; and Lisa is back to her motivational speaking role, as well as running her online business 'Happy Healthy You', and offering health and fitness programs. And the love affair continues‌ as does the story.

ith its towering Norfolk Pines nestled along the shoreline park, and the many wonders of nature in the surrounding National Parks and pristine beach, that form the world-recognised Noosa Biosphere, it is now wonder that Peregian Beach is so popular. Just over the sandhills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of Wallum Heath, which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in Spring. On the western side is Lake Weyba National Park and Lake Weyba which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. The area is rich with native wildlife and flora. Its friendly village atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle, makes Peregian Beach a favourite destination for savvy locals and clever tourists, who are seeking a quiet shopping experience away from the bustle of Noosa Heads. Peregian Beach offers visitors an excellent selection of casual and trendy restaurants, bars, cafĂŠs and take-aways dotted all around the central, village square - all inter-connected by quaint lanes and pathways. Visitors are free to choose the perfect spot for a coffee, luncheon or dinner. And, those wanting a picnic or fish'n'chips in the park are well catered for as well. Tables and seating are dotted around the area to make it easy to take a little break, when seeking out the bargains on offer at the surrounding boutiques. A market day is held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, when live music attracts large crowds to the to the lawn in front of the Peregian Beach Surf Club. Food &Drink GOOD FOOD AND WINE NEWS

Loving the local Brews… So many beers, so many choices, so little time. McLeod's Brewery It's definitely worth a drive up the mountain to visit Maleny Wines and their boutique brewery McLeod's. One of the best things about the rise of small-batch brewed beers is the return of the 'local' brewery. At McLeod's the fact is made evident by their 9 medal wins, including 4 Gold, and a trophy for Best International Lageer (for their Longboarder Lager) at the 2017 Brewers' Guild of New Zealand Awards. Why not also try the Heathen session Pale Ale, or their Great Migration India Pale Ale - my favourite. Their Far North Chili Pilsner is also a taste tingler.

Eumundi Brewery It's been 12 months since the Eumundi Brewery set-up shop in the iconic Imperial Hotel, in Eumundi. A perfect fit for both. Brewers Chris Sheehan and Allan Tilden have been hard at work creating 'signature' brews, including seasonal brews to complement their popular Eumundi Pale Ale and Eumundi Lager. The boys were a big hit at the Noosa Food & Wine Festival with their shiny silver van!

Another boutique brewery set to open… Heads of Noosa Brewing Company For all those who have been watching the construction progress in Rene Street, of the Heads of Noosa Brewing Company we're happy to announce it is nearly finished and should be open late October or early November, with brothers Craig and Lance Masterton at the helm. Then later in November they will open The Taproom with a menu to enhance the beer experience.

Delicious bites:

The Boathouse River Festival… The 7th Annual Boathouse River Festival will take place on Sunday 25th November, in Gympie Terrace at Noosaville. You are invited to join the family and dog-friendly festivities on The Boathouse lawn from 4.00pm. There will be live music, street food, Stone & Wood beer, wine, and fish and chips. Entry is free. So bring along your bestie, a hat and some bug spray - and join in the festivities. Info:www.boathouseriverfestival.com.au

Loving the vibe at French & Gorgeous

There is nothing better than a country drive experience. Of course, if you add in a charming café with an eclectic mix of shopping adventures - all under one roof into the mix, it becomes even more satisfying. Just a pleasant 20 minute drive from Noosa, you'll find the charming township of Cooroy, where the old-world charm of French & Gorgeous awaits. The café offers indoor and garden dining options, and pet dogs are welcome to join you in the garden. Inside, large, wooden farmhouse tables boast fresh flowers in coloured jugs, and ample room to either partake of a little shared camaraderie or host a group of your friends for a pleasant morning, afternoon tea or luncheon. There's plenty of room to indulge in home baked delights, such as buttery croissants, fruit filled muffins, hot Bonsai Brewhouse - Cooran - A rustic country style property scones with lashings of jam and real cream, with great curries on offer as well a great selection of brews flaky cherry pie, or perhaps something savoury from the cabinet. Winners of the ‘Delicious Award for 2018’ Rhodavale Pork, located North West of Gympie, are passionate on raising their animals in an ethical and humane way and they supply the pork belly and scotch fillet. Located in the same region is Bendele Farm Poultry, providing succulent spatchcock and chicken. They have been supplying butchers and restaurants over the coast for more than 20 years. Along with keeping the local produce real, Matt’s priority is to keep it real in the kitchen. He has a yearning to spend as much time as possible training the younger generation chefs, and is passionate about this. His calm, encouraging manner has already become evident in the kitchen with the apprentice chefs benefiting from Matt’s confidence building attitude. The kitchen is rewarded with his energy and grace, while the guests benefit with a memorable culinary experience.

WORDS & PHOTOS: PETRA FRIESER petra@mousedriven.com.au

I think spring is my favourite time of year. With the stunning spring weather we have had of late, my garden has had beautiful spring blossoms emerging everywhere. Everyone is thinking of fitness and health and moving away from the heavier comfort foods of winter to lighter healthier options to lead the way into spring.

P

ondering spring and foods with natural goodness, it’s not too hard to find the healthy options. There is an abundance of local producers creating just that, starting with my morning breakfast favourite; granola crunch, drizzled with natural raw honey. It is no surprise that these are produced by two of my favourite Sunshine Coast producers – Hum Honey and Pip’s Real Food. Honey needs no introduction. Pure, raw and natural, it is the ambrosial nectar that flows freely from hives that we have come to rely on as a natural sweetener. What sets Hum Honey apart from other honeys is Leisa Sams’ dedication to the industry. Where bees have become something of an endangered species, Leisa is passionate about the environmental aspects of beekeeping – preserving nature, replenishing bee stocks and ensuring that her beekeeping is done ethically with the environmental footprint at a minimum. Spring sees hives being split and new locations sought around Sunshine Coast, so these little helpers can go to work. Leisa is selective about where the hives are placed to ensure hives are not contaminated by nearby chemical spraying and other detrimental factors. Additionally, Leisa looks for biodiversity. Hum Honey hives are stationery, which is important. It means that they are

72

NoosaStyleLiving

The wonderful thing about Pip and Leisa is they both collaborate with other growers and producers on the Sunshine Coast, and wherever possible, source their ingredients locally. Pip’s Real Food uses Hum Honey, and so it goes on. exposed to nature’s natural cycle of pollen and nectar. The pollen vital in providing the protein component of the young bee’s diets so they remain healthy and strong. Hum Honey does not blend their honey. It is single origin and cold extracted, meaning that it is a blend of the natural changing flora in a region from that one hive, and is extracted from the honeycomb without heating. Different flowers and different regions can produce varying flavours. The exciting part is that Leisa is in the process of developing a honey batch locator in which you will be able to look up where your batch of honey is produced and the flora that has influenced its flavour. Stay tuned… The other thing that makes Hum Honey special is their ‘Cold Fusion’ range. Lemon myrtle, lavender, cinnamon, vanilla and truffle are among the existing flavours, and rose, chilli, turmeric, fingerlime and black garlic are the exciting new, soon to be launched, flavours. And they are spectacular! The honey is natural honey with ‘infused’ natural ingredients. Again, no heating or blending – just honey and its primary flavour source – cold infused over time. Black garlic is not something you would think would go hand in hand with honey, but drizzled on some local Brie… wow! The rose is pretty special too. But I can’t get enough of the vanilla, using Australian grown vanilla pods.

T

describes her crunches as a bit of an indulgence – they are sweetened, but naturally, and the premium ingredients are chosen for nutritional value and taste. There are currently 5 flavours – Honey and Macadamia, Pecan and Maple, Chai, Fig and Cashew, Brazil Nut (which is also low carb and low sugar) and, my favourite, Cacao and Hazelnut. While the crunches are more typical as a breakfast, they are quite voluminous, so great as snack or trail pack. Having said that I more often than not sprinkle them on my desserts and smoothie bowls… that is, when I am not just eating it out of the pack. So the springtime breaky bowl goes like this… a big dollop of Coyo natural coconut yoghurt, fresh, seasonal and local fruit, a (very generous) sprinkle of Pip’s Crunch and a (very generous, again) drizzle of Hum Honey, maybe even a bit of honeycomb and perhaps topped with a pretty edible flower… because you can.

And there you have a very healthy, very delicious, very beautiful, all local breakfast!

e t a g m r a F late to P

hen comes Pips Real Food’s amazing granola crunch. I have never been a big fan of breakfast cereals, but Pip’s crunch – it can be a breakfast, lunch, snack or a ‘sprinkled on my dessert’ kind of thing. It is a wonderful combination of nuts and seeds, and best of all, is gluten, grain and dairy free, so particularly friendly to those with gluten, grain and dairy intolerances.

I try and support them all by eating it Both are available at select retailers on the Sunshine Coast as well as online. www.humhoney.com.au www.pipsrealfood.com.au For more local producers visit www.sunshinecoastregionalfood.com.au

Pip’s Real Food is based in Cooroy. Competing in triathlons, Pip was looking for healthy breakfast and snack options for herself and her family, but she also wanted it to be something she would enjoy. She

2016 William Wilson Coonawarra Shiraz Cabernet A fitting tribute to Coonawarra's Founding Father. One of the unsung heroes of Australian wine was recognised in September, when two of Coonawarra's most famous families - the Balnaves and Redmans - released the 2016 William Wilson Coonawarra Shiraz Cabernet. A unique blend of families and varieties, presented in a limited edition $300.00 a bottle 'traditional Claret'. Making it the most expensive wine ever released in Coonawarra. The collaborative project is a tribute to the humble Scottish garner, who not only sired both families, but is also credited with the discovery of the region's terra rossa soils. History has it that, Wilson advised fellow settler, John Riddoch to establish his Penola Fruit Colony on what we now know as the terra ross a cigar, laying foundation for the region's reputation for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The wine is available by direct mail order or by visiting Redman's and Balnaves' cellar doors. www.balnaves.com.au www.redman.com.au

The Opalcutter Montville

A COUNTRY

Spring is here and there's no better time to venture up the Blackall Range for a scenic drive around the rolling hills. The air is still crisp on the range, so it's the perfect spot to escape the heat, as you drive through the picturesque villages of Mapleton, Flaxton, Palmwoods, Witta, Montville and Maleny. It's also the perfect destination for a romantic weekend getaway at a quiet B & B, or to visit a winery or boutique brewery for a taste of something special, before venturing onto one of the tantalising restaurants or coffee shops that can be located all over the mountain. There's a particularly fabulous bookshop in Maleny that will have anyone who loves books like me, excited by boundless choice

T

he area is a photographers paradise, as every turn boasts glorious views out over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, large expanses of lush farmland and glimpses of cattle and goats grazing there happily. With parks and gardens always in bloom, as well as a lake, national park, waterfalls, and lily ponds with friendly ducks and geese waiting to be fed. Day-trippers and visitors to the area are provided with a wealth of unique and historical homes and buildings, from old Queenslanders to cute cottages, and sprawling homes - there's enough to satisfy any architecture buff or history lover. Montville and Maleny are well-known for their back-to-nature culture and fine restaurants, cafés and artisan communities, the whole region is an extremely popular destination for those wishing to get up to the mountains for some super-fresh air and get-back-to-nature adventures. The perfect spot for an idyllic picnic or mountain-top wedding. The region is full of design studios, artisan galleries, potteries and quaint shops, full of wonderful treasures that will always delight and sometimes mystify. It's the perfect place to come in search of that perfect present for a special person or occasion - or a treasured art piece for your home. It's the perfect place to enjoy a devonshire tea on a pleasant afternoon, before venturing to your B&B, or luxury accommodation with all every convenience you could possibly want on a perfect getaway. With the Blackall Range's close proximity (it's just an hour's drive from the heart of Noosa and one and a half hour's drive from Brisbane), it's no wonder that

it is the perfect getaway destination for those wishing to take a break from their hectic work schedules, or simply escape the everyday! And, did I mention it is a favourite destination for those wanting a wedding 'with a view'. Clock Shop What surprises people the most is the huge range and sheer number of clocks available at the Clock Shop in Montville. While they're well known for traditional cuckoo clocks and mechanical chiming clocks from Germany, their modern range of clocks is just as impressive. And while you’re there, be sure to grab a cuckoo whistle for the (big) kids. Available at Clock Shop Montville Rosetta Books is a unique bookshop nestled in the beautiful hinterland town of Maleny for the past 16 years. They offer a broad range of interests, support for local authors and an atmosphere of imagination and anticipation that makes us all love bookshops. As an independent bookshop, they have the freedom to choose their books including some very beautiful coffee table books from around the world, books you will not see in any other bookshop. Porcelain by Johanna De Maine The Sole of Africa story... The Sunshine Coast is my home now, but I grew up in South Africa not to far from where the Tsonga shoes are made. I've worn these beautiful shoes myself for 18 years and loved shopping up a storm every time I went home to South Africa to visit my family. I would buy 4 pairs of shoes, a new bag and some accessories for friends. I came across the Byron Bay Tsonga shop while on holiday in November of 2017, I was in heaven. I

help. Their children’s section is a treasure trove of award winning picture books and fiction, and activity books to intrigue and entertain. Settle into the cosy atmosphere of the cafĂŠ within the shop, breathe in the aroma of really good coffee, and indulge in this wonderful accompaniment to a good read. We also pride ourselves on our collection of stunning coffee table books. Art on Cairncross presents Johanna De Maine Johanna De Maine is a Sunshine Coast ceramicist with a world-class reputation, who works solely in porcelain. SOUL OF AFRICA - Kenilworth bought a pair of shoes and a bag and went home buzzing with excitement for having found what felt like the biggest gift on earth... pure joy!! I'm still not exactly sure how it all happened, but a few months later I opened up my own store in Kenilworth, QLD where I have created a beautiful new home for the Tsonga range and I get to share these unique shoes with everyone that comes to town. The days here in Kenilworth are sunny and slow, which allows me to make my customers a cup of coffee so that we can sit down and talk about shoes, travel, life & everything in between.

F

ollowing several years successfully showing her work internationally, including New York, Hong Kong, London, Paris and Italy, Julia, a proud Noosa local of nearly 30 years, is enjoying time reconnecting and recharging her energies in our very own special paradise. “People visit this unique beautiful place from all around the world, and we’re lucky enough to call it home. It has biosphere status, minimal development, the climate is perfect, it’s clean, well cared for and the people are so friendly. It’s just such a wonderful community to be part of. I feel so incredibly lucky,” the artist said. Connecting with people and place, and the synchronistic moments that occur are common threads in her work, seeing her paintings as “landscapes of the soul”. Her paintings celebrate life and inspire the viewer to follow their dreams, live their true purpose and shine their unique light. Julia’s paintings are dynamic, colourful and vibrant, interwoven with intricate textural layers and symbols, certain to uplift the spirit and delight the viewer. Opening celebrations are on Saturday 22 September 3pm-5pm and all are welcome. The exhibition continues until 6 October 10am-4pm, 6/33 Gateway Drive Noosaville.

DRAWN TO ATTENTION

M

ost people agree that drawing is an essential skill for artists. It sits front and centre in the creative process as a means of shifting ideas out of the imagination and onto paper. It’s fair to say that few other creative activities capture this primacy of artistic expression. Drawing gives us direct access the artist’s mind and hand – an unmediated translation of their thoughts into gesture and mark. As I write these words, Noosa Regional Gallery has just finished compiling a shortlist of finalists for the Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize 2018. This much anticipated annual prize was established in 2015 with the generous support of Noosa Shire local, John McCrea. John’s idea for the prize was to create a recurrent event as a way to honour the late Lyn McCrea’s passion for art, and in particular, drawing. As a visual artist, art educator and art collector, Lyn considered drawing to be the foundation of a visual arts practice. The idea of the prize therefore represented an opportunity to promote this passion while celebrating excellence in contemporary Australian drawing. The Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize has become a highlight of the Sunshine Coast art calendar and this year has attracted unprecedented interest and entries from around Australia. With such a strong field of artists selected as finalists, the exhibition will give audiences a chance to take in a survey of the best of contemporary approaches to drawing, all gathered together in a single venue. A new addition this year to Noosa Regional Gallery’s celebration of drawing is a concurrent art prize open to year 9 to 12 students living on the Sunshine Coast and in the Gympie region. With the first prize philanthropically supported by local art enthusiast, Bruce Dahl, DRAW has itself attracted more than 40 entries. It is clear that drawing remains important, even to younger artists. Alongside these ‘of the moment’ surveys of contemporary approaches to drawing, Noosa Regional Gallery is thrilled to also be presenting a focussed look at the work of the celebrated Australian artist, Godwin Bradbeer. Bradbeer is widely recognised as a leading figure in the field of drawing in Australia. He has staged major exhibitions both in Australia and internationally and his work is represented in

many important public and private collections. Another considerable milestone has been achieved by Bradbeer this year with the release of a major monograph about his practice, written by Janet Godwin Bradbeer, Arrival of the Moment – Blackbird McKenzie and published by Thames & Hudson. This beautiful publication will also be available at the Gallery during the exhibition, while Bradbeer will be visiting Noosa during his exhibition to deliver an artist talk and conduct a masterclass with local artists. What this suite of exhibitions clearly shows is that drawing remains as relevant today as it ever has been. It is the way artist have embraced it for contemporary subjects and utilised new methods and mediums for its execution that is so exciting about what Noosa Regional Gallery has on show. We are thrilled to be giving drawing the attention it deserves. Michael Brennan Gallery Director, Noosa Regional Gallery

Qiu Zhijie among the artists announced for APT9... Leading Chinese ar tist Qiu Zhijie was in Brisbane recently to create Map of Utopia 2018, an enormous ink painting that will be a major highlight of the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporar y Ar t (APT9).

uiBorn in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province in 1969, and now living and working in Beijing, Qiu Zhijie is one of the most important Chinese artists of his generation, and a leading figure in conceptual and new media art globally. Other exciting highlights of the Triennial include a display of large, circular sculptural forms created from Nassa shells, known as Tutana or Loloi by members of the Gunantuna community of Nangananga village from East New Britain in Papua New Guinea. Premiering at GOMA, these objects were specially created for APT(, and will tower above visitors as they enter the building. tender to acquire goods and exchange items, as well as to enact relationships during major rites of passage, such as marriages, initiations and funerals. Indonesian artist, Zico Albaiqunizico's vibrant figurative and landscape paintings play with aspects of Indonesian art history and notions of painterly representation, in particular, he deploys references to various Indonesian traditions, such as Mooi Indie (beautiful Indies') painting - a genre of painting capturing romanticised scenes of the Indonesian landscape and its people under Dutch colonial rule. The APT9 is exclusive to QAGOMA, Brisbane, the latest chapter in the Gallery’s flagship exhibition series will include new and recent work by more than 80 emerging and established artists and collectives from more than 30 countries. APT presents a wonderful opportunity for visual artists from across Australia and the Asia Pacific to collaborate and share works that are a powerful expression of their cultures and experiences. Free, and curated for audiences of all ages, APT9 will be presented across key spaces in the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and the entire Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) at South Bank from 24th November 2018 until 28th April 2019.

There is much which is inspirational about the Sunshine Coast…the wonderful walks and great beaches; the beautiful scener y and delicious produce, but the area has also been a recognized hub for ar t and culture over the decades and this is still one of the prime attractions for many visitors.

T

he visual arts scene has continued to evolve and expand since the 1970s and has sometimes been difficult for visitors to navigate, but that has now been addressed through the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail. This co-operative venture between the many galleries, studios, artisans and artists of the region continues to be co-ordinated by Tony Gill from Art on Cairncross. It allows everyone to plan ahead or search for just the right thing and given the thriving diversity of disciplines, it gives access to works by contemporary painters and bespoke furniture makers, fine porcelain artists and exclusive jewelers. Previous printed versions had to be more contained and were soon out of date as businesses came and went, so

Tony saw the opportunity to take the guide online to expand its coverage and keep it consistent and current. The website can be accessed via the QR code (by scanning on a smartphone) or by searching Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail. It has a simple layout, clearly giving names, addresses and opening hours and an outline of the visual feasts to expect and then a link through to each business’ own website for yet greater detail. Geographically, the trail covers from Caboolture to Gympie, from the coast through the hinterland, allowing for planning before setting out and also considering places to stop en route. The website spans from the larger, public (council-run) galleries through commercial galleries to artisan spaces and artist studios, allowing each person to customize their own tour. A section is also dedicated to specific exhibitions or events which Red Cedar sculpture by Jack Wilms may include from major touring collections to small art groups to open studios. The information can be particularly helpful for families or groups, as so many tastes can be accommodated, but also new ideas explored. Each venue will be happy to assist with further suggestions or directions. As Tony explains, “This is a great example of the practical uses of the digital age. The old printed trails used more resources and could be incorrect in a short time, but this version can be easily updated. It is a dynamic document, which keeps evolving as new information arrives. It also shows great co-operation between all levels of the visual arts industry”. The array of places to experience proves that plenty of time needs to be allocated (and probably several different trips over time), as this should be a leisurely pursuit and obviously include enjoying the landscape and the eateries along the way too! ''Andy Warhol the bellwether of the art market’'

Andy Warhol

The Economist 1994.

Andy Warhol

It’s hard to believe had he still been alive today Andy Warhol would have been 90 in August.

His famous personality icons such as Monroe , liz Taylor, Elvis , Brando and Mao Tse Tung, survive well in the painted form, but are loosing their desirability as screen prints. Although they were put together design wise in the factory they were mainly printed externally in large editions of 200 / 250, and in a variety of photo print methods. After 40 years hanging in the worlds boardrooms many have ‘Coca-Cola’ Screen Print 6/10 - 27 x 23cm - Andy Warhol faded, and the fading of the Icons themselves doesn’t help . op art still seems so young and In twenty years time Liz taylor on your wall will fresh,Warhol’s iconography taken from probably be as popular as having Fanny Bryce on it today . the world of advertising and a cavalcade

of then famous celebrities and Roy Lichtensteins borrowings from the comic world will never die ,or will they?

In the case of Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) his major paintings are amongst the most expensive of the twentieth century, and are mostly racked away in important institutional galleries . They will endure, but what of the output of ‘ The Factory ‘ the legendary manufactory of his multiples ?

Although his career commenced in the 50s, it was in the sixties it blossomed with American Icons. Campbell’s soup cans being the greatest of the early icons, but eventually the humble soup can was revisited more times than Syd Nolan’s Ned Kelly, but like Kelly it has endured as a good seller in the market place ,likewise the Coca Cola bottle( seldom revisited ). The Coke bottle’s prints were smaller, in low editions, with the screen work overseen by the master, print editions were identified by the number of bottles displayed . The three bottle version illustrated here is print no 6 of an edition of 10 , and is available from ' the collection ‘ . As the Warhol legend grew ‘The Factory ‘ relied on it’s twenty or so employee’s to expand on the thoughts of the master. He was more often or not,, following other pursuits .A rock group called ‘ Velvet Underground ‘, several book’s, films and doco’s mainly about himself . As well as endless hours at studio 54

Rhys Muldoon and David Williamson

NEARER THE GODS: David Williamson meets Isaac Newton on the verge of his greatest scientific discovery.

G

enius, bastardry and heroism. These are the three words Williamson uses to describe Nearer the Gods. Given this powerful summation, it's fortuitous that director, Sam Strong has cast some of the best and most exciting actors in the country in Matthew Backer who plays Edmund Halley, the much-loved Queenslander William McInnes will play King Charles II, and Rhys Muldoon who plays Isaac Newton. Williamson said the play had been in the back of his mind since his University days. "I was the first mechanical engineering graduate from Monash University, and Newton's Laws were the foundation of everything we learned, and I was astounded and awed at how one man took us from total ignorance of the laws of the universe, to an almost complete understanding in one giant leap. One of the truly great geniuses of all time." "But when I started researching him, I found to my amazement that but for Edmund Halley, who drew him back from delusions that God had chosen him to reveal his plan for humankind, to solving the problem that no one else could, mankind's single most significant leap forward in knowledge may never have happened. My playwright's instinct was 'what a great story'. Everything in the play, based on a great amount of research, either happened or could have happened. The actual sources are sparse, so some conjecture was necessary. Nothing to my knowledge is not plausible." "This is a fascinating and blackly funny study of how the deep and ancient emotional impulses urging us to attain power, and status - and to belittle and vanquish our rivals, can be at odds with our advanced capacity for logical reason. You see the opposing forces at work every day in the jugular political and business worlds." he said. When: 6th October - 3rd November Where: Bille Brown Theatre, Queensland Theatre. WHAT’S ON IN NOOSA & BRISBANE by a lusty bellhop who wants the same position. Throw in a government inspector, cross-dressing and slamming doors, and the laughs keep coming in this relentlessly funny comedy. By Joe Orton - Directed by Tania Nash Comedy First produced in 1992, COSI has become one of the most successful Australian plays. A terrific story about madness, illusion, sanity... and theatre. In a mental institution in 1971, Lewis, a young director, takes on the task of mounting a production of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte in a burnt-out theatre while protests against the Vietnam War are being outside. Semi-autobiographical in nature, COSI explores a life lesson for Lewis. As his life is touched by these extraordinary people and his operatic production (Cosi Fan Tutte) lurches forward, we learn, along with Lewis, that when chasing your dreams it helps to be a little crazy. On one level, COSI is a poignant look at life through the eyes of patients at an insane asylum. On another, it's an hilarious take on the madness of creative endeavour and the chaotic terror of getting up there and making a fool of yourself. By Louis Nowra - Directed by Jane Rivers Cut price preview: September 13 at 7.30pm, all tickets $23.00 Evenings: Sept14,15, 20, 21, 27, 28, 29 at 7.30pm Matinees: September 16,22, 23 at 2pm

She is not happy about this. Still, she agrees to undergo an experimental treatment sure to provide excellent research for the future of oncology, but with no guarantee for her. Once the teacher, Professor Bearing is now the student, learning more than she ever wanted to know - about sickness and regret, about human kindness and medical progress, and of course, about that which she has studied so fastidiously in the teaching of Donne's work, "Death, be not proud." W;t is a humorous and poignant look at the journey we're all on, about what it means to face the issues of life, purpose and death while discovering beautiful poetry and compassion along the way. Global, timeless, coll Part of an extensive renovation of a tropical Noosa home. We pushed out an existing window to create a perfect niche for a beautiful old Chinese sideboard to sit opposite the dining table. Contemporary artwork, crystal decanters and silver tray complete the look.

These three words sum up the design philosophy of Jan Cormie, interior designer and founder of The Collected Interior.

A Melbourne inner city apartment completed last year for a young professional. The brief was for an urban tribal feel with a sophisticated edge. We roughly painted the old bricks white to add texture and added African artefacts, a fabulous zebra hide under a glass coffee table and a pop of colour with the fabulous red egg chair.

“It’s wonderful to walk into a client’s home many years after the work was completed and find a home that is still contemporary. “Many trends come and go, but good design of any genre, whether it’s a beach house, city apartment or country home stands the test of time.”

A

designer for more than 30 years, Jan Cormie says she feels privileged to still be creating beautiful spaces for clients. “My experience is wide ranging from small budget beautiful single rooms through to grand budget apartments, city and country homes with the odd luxury yacht and helicopter interior thrown onto the mix. “My late husband was a builder and we designed and built many homes both in New South Wales and Queensland, so I have extensive experience in creating from the ground up…..and staying on budget!” After moving to the Gold Coast in the late 80s, Jan worked for

After Before famous rock band…. an interesting experience! “I have worked with so many wonderful clients who remain friends and I am now working with some of their children on their own projects.” Jan moved from Brisbane to Noosa just over two years ago, working with developer Barry Bladon to help create The Pavilion development in Noosa Junction.

Following its completion, Jan Cormie launched her iconic retail store The Collected Interior. “The Collected Interior is a showcase for the beautiful art, furniture and decorative pieces I use in my work, and are all available for purchase in store. “The mix of fabulous pieces carefully selected from China, Africa, India, Europe as well as locally produced bespoke products provide a wonderful choice to create your own sophisticated and collected home.”

Jan says one of the most satisfying aspects to her job is the joy of helping her clients style and create a beautiful and sophisticated spaces. “Along with our styling services, we also offer a full design and consultancy service. “We liaise with clients, architects and builders on renovations and new builds, from initial concepts through to completion.” Ms Cormie says when it comes to high quality design, it comes down to a few key pieces of furniture, art and decorative items to transform an ordinary space into something extraordinary. “The trick is to start with a very simple base and then add layers of form, colour and texture to create a home that is as pleasing to your spirit as it is to your eyes. “An important thing to remember is that not every piece has to have a wow factor, it’s often the final singular details which complete a room. “Adding those final pieces is like accessorising an outfit - a beautiful lamp, a stunning artefact or cushions in a fabulous fabric make an enormous difference to a simple background space. “As with any product, large or small, it’s the fine details which do most to create a beautiful and functional home.” NoosaStyleLiving

“I am yet to meet someone who hasn’t been left breathless by the beauty of orchids.”

As one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants, their elegance, colour and longevity of flower appeals to amateur, enthusiast and black thumbed gardeners alike.

W

hile the stately Phalaenopsis and the strappy leaved Cymbidiums have traditionally been the most readily available orchids, we’re now seeing a greater range become more widely available, including the fabulous dendrobiums – reminiscent of holidays in south-east asia for many of us, delicate Oncidiums and even the alienlike Lady Slipper orchids. While having a reputation for being difficult to keep alive, with a little understanding of their natural origins these problems can be overcome. Over-watering is the most common cause demise of orchids – most orchids live their natural life above ground, attached to trees or rocks or clinging on to crevices – as such they are very efficient water users and don’t need much. That said it is best to touch their growing media to assess whether it is time for a drink rather than stick to a calendar. When it is time – run the pot under the tap until water flows freely through the pot then let it drain before putting them back on display – and whatever you do – never let them sit in water for more than a few minutes. On the coast we rarely have prolonged periods of dryness such that lack of humidity becomes a real issue, nevertheless it doesn’t hurt to give your orchid a little mist both during cool months when the air is dry and also during hot dry spells – just makes sure this doesn’t translate to saturation. Another frustration many people have is the time it takes for orchids to reflower – all I can say about this is that good things are worth waiting for! While I am waiting I always cheat a little… by popping an artificial flower stem into the pot to help me bide my time…. it has fooled many a visitor to both my home and the shop!

he beautiful Spring sunshine brought the families out in huge numbers to enjoy Father’s Day in the picturesque Botanic Gardens on the banks of Lake Macdonald. And it appears they didn’t go home empty handed either with many a departing car’s back seat and boot filled with plants. Jill Brownlee, President of the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends said “the support from the local community and the wider region has been amazing. The attendance each year keeps on growing as did the plant and raffle sales this year.” This assessment was affirmed by stall holder Wendy of Wendy Britton Ceramics. “This was only my second year and it was certainly busier than last year. Lots of happy people enjoying the sunshine and what we all had to offer”. “We increased the number of stall holders this year”, said Jill “and provided even more diverse plants and gardening items”. Net proceeds from the Plant Fair are redirected back to supporting the Noosa Botanic Gardens. This amazingly green, garden city is the perfect destination for Australian travellers wanting to visit Asia. It's nowhere near as busy as Bali, Bangkok or Hong Kong, and offers a sense of security that many of us look for these days.

T

he streets are always clean, tropical flowers abound on every street and in every tree-lined park; the people friendly and helpful, and although shopping in the multitude of leading, world brand boutiques is not particularly cheap, there are always bargains to be found in sales, and visits to Little India and China Town. The city is also mecca for diverse dining possibilities, which was the reason for our trip anyway. From street food to succulent seafood; fine dining to delicious heritage dishes, night markets and so much more. The options are endless. Unfortunately, on our visit the Raffles Hotel was still under renovation, so we had to be content with a Singapore Sling, in the temporary Long Bar around the corner. Luckily we could still purchase our bottle of their signature Raffles Chilli Crab Sauce to take back to Australia. Not quite the same as eating it in the hallowed halls of the Raffles dining room, but in this instance it will have to suffice. Luckily in this city of diversity, it wasn't the only heritage building with an exceptional dining pedigree. We found the 5-star, Goodwood Park Hotel just 5 minutes away from our hotel, and stepped back in time to the Colonial past. High ceilings, impeccable furnishings, glass cabinet-lined hallways with memorabilia and artefacts from another era. We decided to try the Traditional English High Tea with Champagne, which opened us up to a sweeping array of cloche covered silver trays and terrines, offering everything from tiny fish and chips with malt vinegar, devonshire scones, tiny sandwiches, chocolate fountain and so much more. On our next excursion we ventured on to The Fullerton Heritage precinct, home to a selection of the city’s most sought-after tables, situated in spectacular buildings in the heart of Singapore, with the best views of the Marina Bay and the infamous Singapore skyline. This is Singapore’s focal point for waterfront dining. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore are unique elements of the precinct, alongside The Fullerton Waterboat House, One Fullerton, The Fullerton Pavilion, Clifford Pier and Customs House. Dining your way around the precinct requires some planning - and is best done on an empty stomach. The culinary teams at this one-of-a-kind precinct, are geniuses at showcasing the connection between the best of a bygone era and modern-day Singapore. We chose The Fullerton Hotel's Town Restaurant on a beautiful Sunday, where they hold a lavish Sunday Champagne Brunch, offering lashings of fresh seafood, traditional dishes, the infamous Hainanese chicken rice, free flowing Veuve Clicquot and my favourite - a Bloody Mary station with all the fixings, where you could make your BM to your personal taste. Our dining adventure to the unbelievable Marina Bay Sands including a breathtaking ride to the 57th Floor, where we dined at Spargo by Wolfgang Puck. Now here is a room with a view - looking out over the infinity pool - across the city skyline, orchid floating happily in my cocktail. What more could a girl want? At night the foreshore comes alive with an animated lightshow to dazzle the gathered crowds and cruise boats. No matter how many times you return to the MBS precinct, I defy anyone to say that they saw everything. It's so big!! So many shops, restaurants, cafés and my favourite the Singaporean TWG Tea Shops. So much to see, so much to do - I think we need to go again next year. www.fullertonhotels.com www.goodwoodparkhotel.com www.marinabaysands.com www.raffleshotel.com Photos: Top right - Marina Bay Sands Hotel - Writer lunching at The Fullerton Hotel - Below: Infinity pool in front of Spargos Restaurant atop Marina Bay Sands Hotel

ston Martin’s first all-electric production car - the Rapide E progressing apace, the luxury British marque has confirmed a raft of technical details for the strictly limited 155-unit special edition. Working closely with Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) as its development partner, Aston Martin has utilised the hugely successful leader in Electric Vehicle (EV) technology to kickstart a new era for Aston Martin’s power train technology, and overcome the technical challenges associated with packaging the battery system and motors within the space available. Throughout the development process, the

We care for some of Noosa’s most admired cars!

engineering team have focused on achieving effective cooling of the batteries and motor to ensure consistent performance, while strict weight targets have been stringently observed using lightweight alloys and carbon composite materials. Rapide E will be powered by an 800V battery electrical architecture, with 64kWh installed

capacity using over 5600 lithium ion 18650 format cylindrical cells. These are mounted in a bespoke battery pack where the original 6.0-litre V12, its gearbox and fuel tank were located. This battery system powers two rear mounted electric motors producing a combined target output of just over 610PS and a colossal 950Nm

of torque. Rapide E’s range target is over 200 miles under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), while the model is capable of charging at a rate of 1851,2 miles of range per hour, using a typical 400V 50kW charger. However, the car’s 800V high-voltage battery system enables faster charging of 3101,2 miles of range per hour, using an 800V outlet delivering 100kW or higher. Being an Aston Martin, the Rapide E is being developed with a highperformance objective. Projected top speed for the Rapide E is 155mph, with a sub-4.0sec 060mph time and a 50-70mph time of just 1.5sec. It’s important to stress that these figures are not restricted to a narrow window only when the batteries are fully-charged. Instead the target is for maximum performance on-demand throughout majority of the battery state of charge window, as would be expected from a conventional internal combustionengined car. This includes the ability to drive a full lap of the Nürburgring with absolutely no derating of the battery and the ability to cope with the daily demands of repeated hard acceleration and braking.

NOOSAVILLE - SHOP - EAT - CRUISE

F

rom sunrise to sunset along the park that runs adjacent to the Noosa River (known as the 'golden mile') you'll see a passing parade of people walking their dogs, others taking the time to amble along watching the boats as they motor or sail past; devotees of tai chi and yoga carefully going through their movements; and others enjoying a quiet cup of coffee with friends; while mothers and holiday makers take their little ones for a walk or ride under the bowers of towering trees. Along the foreshore, helpful information centre staff will book tours for you to visit Fraser Island (the world's largest sand island, and home to Australia's purest dingos), as well as trips to the mystical Everglades, or themed cruises. With playgrounds and exercise equipment, as well as electric barbecues, and

covered table and bench seating positioned around the area, it is the perfect place for a family get together. The carefree nature of the area is mirrored by the gentle wings of the pelicans as they soar high above before coasting in to the shoreline in search of the prime position for sleeping or checking out the chance of catching a fish down below; as those wishing to spend some time on the water hire kayaks, paddle boards, small boats and pontoons from the local boat shed operators. If not so inclined, you can still enjoy the river by hopping aboard the ferry for a leisurely cruise. All this and only 10 minutes drive from Hastings Street. What are you waiting for?

The Last Word KEITH JACKSON

W

RITING this en route from Italy on that 14hour final DubaiBrisbane marathon. How on earth did we do those 30-hour cattle class flights on noisy, polluting 707s in the 1960s? Flying home from a few weeks away and a bit of R&R in Do-Buy gives plenty of time for reflection. These include the ills of this world: Noosa parking, for example, the scarcity of which seems purpose-designed to keep visitors at home (which some locals consider a good thing). In fact those same locals believe Noosa would be an even superior place if most other locals would become locals of some other part of the world. Barcelona perhaps. BARCELONA is an arty place and its powers that be have made an art of underground parking. Wide tree-lined avenues and plenty of vehicles stored well out of sight so people can enjoy rambling along La Rambla and dining al fresco in one of those beautiful plazas that were so lacking in ancient Noosa. Meanwhile our town elders equate underground, multilevel parking to the development of leprosy. Almost as odious as additional toilets along Gympie Terrace. In both cases, I suppose, the pooh-bahs believe the fewer car parks and toilets there are, the more it encourages walking, very swiftly in the case of the latter. Though, to be fair, the two kilometre riverside promenade does have two signposts advising in metres how much agony awaits as you seek to clutch your way to the nearest facility.

NOOSA Council, I read from Venice in the online version of a local newspaper, has had a long and secret discussion about utilising the former and now steadily deteriorating TAFE site. This is the site about which local folk have lots of ideas and no money. The article helpfully quoted the views of each councillor present (you can’t keep secrets in this internet age). It showed each councillor having a different view on the matter which they had clearly arrived at after thinking deeply for the past five years since the site’s future use first began to be talked about.

MEANWHILE one of my field agents – I’d guess he has an education in the history of the vacant lots of Noosa – reports that back in early 21st century a bunch of idealistic citizens tried to stop the TAFE vocational facility being built "because of the environmentally significant flora and fauna". My agent’s conscientious research revealed that as a result a compromise was reached in which a couple of aged gum trees were saved from the depredations of TAFE. The reason for this scanty return turned out to

be that the site had been the location of the Tewantin town tip. For mine, I think its immediate future lies as an archaeological dig. I think I’ll stand for Council. POMONA is a hinterland town of 3,000 located at the base of Mount Cooroora half an hour’s drive from Noosa. It had the distinction of being the administrative centre of the shire when it was established in 1910. But in 1985 someone had a brain snap and moved the local government to Tewantin, where it remains. Pity, as Pomona (originally named Pinbarren Siding for the timber trains) is the most historic town in the shire (the old council chambers now a fine museum). In April, Prince Edward visited the town generating more excitement since the signed history walk was opened. DELIGHTFULLY, it’s almost impossible to walk more than 200 metres through most of Noosa without happening upon a pretty little park or even more imposing acreage carefully peppered with trees and shrubs and sometimes perched beside a canal or river. But the shire’s Administrator of Benches and Seating (Outdoor) really needs to keep a closer eye on our ageing statistics. The average age of seniors (as we’re politely called) is escalating fiercely in Noosa and I can inform ABS(O) so are associated back problems. Unfortunately the park/bench ratio remains painfully (sic) high. I further advise ABS(O) that once an arthritic lumbar spine travelling solo eases itself on to soft grass to take in the view, there is no getting up. If I were ABS(O), I’d ensure that every one of those pleasant spots had its own bench or even, if deserving, a real seat with a backrest.
