Foundation co-founders Kylie Perkin and John O'Leary with Rosemary Callaghan, Jo Johnston, Katrina Thorpe and Nick Pilditch
Fundraiser fun at Rickys A lavish long afternoon of food, wine, fashion and fundraising at Rickys River Bar + Restaurant, organised by local breast cancer charity, Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation, launched the annual Pinktober appeal. It was supported by generous businesses such as Ikatan Spa, Rose Callaghan Realty, Gibsons Homewares, Harvey Norman and of course Rickys. The sell-out lunch was hosted by Seven’s Rosanna Natoli and former Getaway presenter Ben Dark, fashions were by Angels of Noosa and $15,000 was raised to support Sunshine Coast women and their families living with breast cancer.
Maggie helps out Molly This year’s fundraiser for Alzheimer’s research was a Sunday brunch at Noosa Waterfront restaurant. The charity was set up by Libby Day in honour of her mother Molly and the name Molly’s Song recognises that participation in music activities at whatever level can bring so much joy into the lives of those who have Alzheimers or one of the many forms of dementia. ABC’s Mary-Lou Stephens was the MC and the special guest was renowned cook Maggie Beer, the second-longest Australian member of Slow Food who was named as senior Australian of the Year in 2010. Libby said she had the idea to ask Maggie after finding her name on the Fight Dementia website and she too is a Dementia Champion. As usual Maggie enthralled the sell-out crowd with her stories

Surfs up for Ainsley Harriott Special international guest chef for the Brisbane Good Food & Wine Show Ainsley Harriott, took time out to cook a barbecue breakfast between the flags on Kings Beach and help raise money for the Surf Life Saving Club. Ainsley said he loved the Sunshine Coast as it seemed to be a have-it-all location when it came to food. “In addition to plenty of fresh local produce, there’s beautiful weather and gorgeous locations for outdoor dining. What a perfect combination. “There are not many places near my home (in the UK) where you can stand on the edge of a beautiful beach and cook a barbecue!”

Bacchus hosts spectacular launch party… Matt Preston recently flew into Brisbane to officially open the city's newest 'must dine' destination, Bacchus at Rydges in Southbank. With a trapeze artist greeting guests who walked the red carpet by filling their flutes with Moét Chandon; Lamborghini cars, Canturi jewels, a host of celebrities - as well as different dining rooms filled with tantalising arrays of fabulous food, this was one event that we just couldn't miss. Bacchus the Roman god of food, wine and indulgence would have been so proud.

Welcome to our absolutely stunning Summer issue…
Kaylene Murray Group Editor
Once again Christmas has snuck up on me - and once again, I was not prepared.
G
ranted this year I have a proper excuse, as Tom (my husband and our intrepid Art Director/Photographer) has been in hospital recovering from major surgery. It has taken the glow away from this year's celebrations for our family, and after the weeks of chemo, radiation and now surgery - we will just be happy to have our lives return to some form of normality. Throughout our scary journey, I have met many others in similar situations, so I cannot feel that we are going through it alone. We have friends both old and new, relatives and business associates, who have travelled the same path - some with good outcomes, and some not so, but through it all - it is the support of friends and family, doctors, nurses and medical staff that gives us all the strength we need. In this festive season, our thoughts and best wishes are also with all the families whose loved ones are stationed overseas with the Australian armed forces - in far away places - who will have little or no contact over the festive season with their loved ones. To all of you - we wish you health, happiness, good luck and above all... love. For the summer season, we have created a fabulous magazine full of amazing goodies, to make it easy for you to accomplish your Christmas wish list and set in motion all those New Year's Eve resolutions (that you are definitely going to keep this year!). And, hopefully bring some sunshine into all your lives. In this issue we showcase the latest national
and international fashion trends; beautiful clothing and accessories; swimwear, fabulous home interiors, soft furnishings and lighting; exciting food and wine options, restaurants and recipes; stunning cars; and the perfect selection of prestige properties. We take a look at the upcoming theatre season; talk to world-famous photographers and artists; and offer our selection of books for the long summer months ahead. This issue we bring you an interesting mix of interesting people for you to meet, as we take a peek at the life of local vet Craig Marshall; discuss the transformation on saris into modern designer wear with Dui Cameron; learn about a life full of romance and adventure with Simon and Eva Manning; revisit the 50 Shades of Grey ideology with a smile; and introduce you to many other local identities. This coming festive season and New Year brings with it the possibility of new beginnings. We wish all our valued clients, devoted readers, writers, artists, printers and business friends and associates; family and friends - a wonderful Christmas and New Year party season. We thank all the skilled chefs and restaurateurs, expert wine makers, beer and cider brewers, liquor and liqueur masters; and local producers, who have filled our year with the taste sensations we have eagerly shared with our readers. We thank you all for your assistance and support over the past twelve months, and look forward to many more years to come. Please sit back with a glass of your favourite tipple in-hand, a piece of Christmas cake, read and enjoy…

'Right Here, Right Now' With a career that has kept the charts and the headlines busy for nearly 10 years, Cosima De Vito is one artist who never fails to deliver the goods. Not a lot needs to be said about the Australian Idol survivor; the girl with the huge voice has done it all…. and then some! Cosima is best remembered as one of the most popular contestants on the first season of Australian Idol (2003), who, after her controversial exit went on to slaughter the Australian music charts with her powerhouse vocals.
Among her many record breaking achievements , Cosima received an ARIA and best new artist award, as well as solidifying her place in the history books by becoming the first Australian indie artist ever to debut in the #1 spot! With a string of certified hit singles, albums and sell out tours, the multiplatinum selling artist, who famously re-did Cold Chisels 'When The War Is Over' is ready to once again take centre stage. After 3 years out of the spotlight, Cosima is excited to deliver new music to her army of
loyal fans - and not one to disappoint ,she's now armed with a hot new look, a new attitude and a thumping new song .. Cosima is back and better than ever! The new single titled 'Right Here, Right Now' offers an edgier and somewhat raw insight into Cosima's unique musical stylings. With infectious sounds, massive vocals and a hook that you can't get out of your head, the new single will certainly reaffirm Cosima as one of the countries most in-demand performers.

profile It’s been a life of romance and adventure, punctuated with mandatory hard work for Simon and Eva Manning accumulating their labyrinth of pottery, rugs, artefacts, jeweller and exotic beads from Africa, India and the Himalaya, writes Helen Flanagan
T
he collection of tribal objects plus antique and contemporary beads of which there are over 10,000 different types, the result of Simon and Eva Manning’s 20-year plus search, is considered the best in Australia. But let’s wind back the clock to their first adventure together - the day Swedish-born Eva met Simon. “It was a chance meeting in a youth hostel in the late 70s on the island of Santorini in the Mediterranean, followed by Egypt and a taste of Africa,” says Simon wistfully recalling it was love at first sight. “We married in Sweden both aged 19 and shocked our parents because we married in secret, then took off to Scandinavia and Europe across the Pacific Islands to South America and back to Europe a year later…ouch. Eva's father didn't speak to us for five years deciding excommunication was the only suitable punishment.” How fortuitous that Simon and Eva ‘found’ Noosa in 1988. They bought 12 acres
otic treasures from t-of-the-way places on impulse in Black Mountain on the outskirts of the shire. “Born in wild Tasmania I hated suburbia so we agreed perhaps the bush was the best compromise,” says the former theatre production manager. “Eva was taken by the views and rural quiet of our new land but there was only one problem - no house. So we built one. “Undaunted we built it with our own hands helped by only our account at the local building supplies. We lived on a steel yacht in the Noosa River during the build which took about a year. It’s a simple sturdy timber house and one of the most wonderful accomplishments of my life. We still live there today are both keen cooks of Asian-style fare using heirloom vegetables and herbs from my permaculture garden.” The passion for collecting turned into a business when the pair opened African Escape in Hastings Street. Nine years later they decided to diversify after discovering the wonderful tribal and ethnic riches of India and south and central Asia. They moved to a purpose-built gallery called Timbuktu To Kathmandu, the name dreamt-up whilst flying from Mali in West Africa to Kathmandu in Nepal, in fact Timbuktu to Kathmandu! continues next page...

noosastyle “The catalyst to business is simple: we do everything together, dream, build businesses, boats, houses and gardens, make jewellery, laugh, cry and collecting nurtures our love of the wild worlds of this planet,” explains Simon. “The other non-Western civilisations are not easy to enter as a foreigner however these destinations have been our place of learning and trade for the last 25 years. An extraordinary gift really as our initiation into Africa was when it was just beginning to open up to foreigners. We were swept along in a whirlwind of excitement and challenge around every corner. Later, business took us to 20 or more African countries, India and the Sub Continent, Nepal and the Himalayan Plateau and parts of Central Asia and East Asia.” Eva is the creative force behind Timbuktu To Kathmandu from styling displays to design and crafting jewellery.“She has her own aesthetic that is borne of a love of beads, stone, precious metals and primitive cultures and when you walk in you’re not sure if it’s a museum or a shop,” says Simon recalling the numbers of times they’ve been to Kenya has been at least 50. “We love it. It’s a place where you can laugh all day long with the locals who have a great sense of humour. I think it's the true Africa, the essence of Africa, beautiful, frightening, awe inspiring and ultimately friendly. “Without a doubt the most interesting old pieces have come out of West Africa and from places just as interesting as the objects themselves. Ivory Coast was one of our favourite countries in Africa. Just the shear variety of material culture and colour, adornment and beading was incredible. It has many cultures converging within its borders and as a result it's a melting pot of beliefs and African spirituality all bathed in a thick syrup of mystic. We loved collecting there and made many lasting friendships. In all my time in the ghettos of Africa I have never been mugged or robbed, only shown respect and friendship and given help when needed. Unfortunately Ivory Coast has had a long and bitter civil war recently and the many great old markets have burnt down and with them a legacy of remarkable ethnic art and antiquities. “My absolute favourite place however was the Marche Rosa (Pink Market) in Bamako in Mail West Africa. It was like something from a thousand and one nights. Dark and mysterious and labyrinthine in nature, it lured you into its maze of crooked tunnels that penetrated deep into the ancient crenulated adobe building. The ancient market covered acres in the middle of town and was the hub of Bamako's activity. Bare light bulbs hung from the ceiling in some rooms and others were lit by kerosene lamps or candles. Our interests were in the section of the market where the bead and jewellery traders
“There were unbelievable finds to be made from ancient texts and beads from the Middle Ages, to exquisite hand-crafted ethnic adornments made decades previously. A cornucopia of absolute treasure…” worked. They would spread out on rugs sitting crosslegged bargaining in the flickering light of a candle with nomads from Timbuktu or Burkina or many of the ancient cities across the Sahara. “There were unbelievable finds to be made from ancient texts and beads from the Middle Ages, to exquisite hand-crafted ethnic adornments made decades previously. A cornucopia of absolute treasure. I still dream of the Marche Rosa - it'sFletcher embedded on my soul. Photos: Photography Unfortunately it burned down in 1999 never to be replaced.” Away from Africa and environs Simon and Eva are keen kayakers and sailors although the 11 metre catamaran they built in the shed at home has been sold, but Eva is often seen on her surf-ski while Simon is surfing the Noosa points. More water sports could be on the agenda when they hang the ‘see you mid 2014’ shingle on the door at Timbuktu To Kathmandu and head to wherever on another unencumbered romantic adventure.

International photographer Peter Lik
Left: Pacific Tides - Peter Lik
A chance meeting with fellow photographer Allen Prier in Alaska became a defining moment in Peter Lik’s life. He was introduced to the medium format panoramic camera and given the advice “Go big or go home.”
L
ik’s journey had humble origins. Born in Melbourne, Australia, to Czech immigrants, it was his parents’ gift of a Kodak Brownie camera on his eighth birthday that set young Peter’s course.
Entirely self-taught, Lik worked hard at his craft before making a life-changing decision: to go to the United States in 1984.

Lik did both. He returned to Australia to photograph the vastness of the Great South Land. Peter then went on to open his own fine art publishing company as well as his first gallery in his adopted hometown of Cairns. He returned to the States in 1989 for another jaunt before undertaking a mammoth trip early in the new millennium to photograph landscapes of all 50 states. Fifty thousand miles and 1,000 rolls of film later, the “biggest challenge of my life” was completed. Highlights of Peter’s American odyssey can be found in his book “Spirit of America.”

Lik’s stature as a photographer has been indisputably confirmed with his receipt of the award of Master Photographer from both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He has also been awarded fellowships by the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) and The Royal Photographic Society (RPS).
Photography. Love it! And I’m glad to share that feeling with you.
Now based in Las Vegas, where he oversees his company LIK USA™, Lik’s career continues to boom. He has sold in excess of $200 million of fine art photography, has 13 galleries of his own and counts presidents and celebrities among his many collectors. Early 2011 saw two more landmarks for Lik when he sold his photograph “One,” taken on the banks of the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire, for $1 million, and had his classic image “Ghost” included in an exhibition of Nature’s Best Photography in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Lik’s masterworks include “Ancient Spirit,” “Sacred Sunrise,” “Angel’s Heart,” “Tree of Life” and the highly acclaimed “Ghost.” Each Limited Edition release is greeted with great enthusiasm by collectors and this has been reflected in recent recordbreaking sales. Now at the top of his game, Peter Lik is “loving it!” at full throttle and the animated Aussie is showing no signs of slowing down. TM

napping up Indian wedding saris and turning them into tops to sell seemed an unlikely scenario but Dui Cameron loved the colour and texture of the fabrics and couldn’t stand to see them go to waste. “Fabrics, colours, prints have always inspired me,” says Kempsey-born Dui whose early memories are driving her father’s milk truck around the country town, surfing at Crescent Head, going to high school in Brisbane and holidaying at Peregian Beach, where she ultimately moved to. “I am also inspired by Indian culture, the femininity of Indian women and the way they embrace colour and
a traditional Indian sari into a western style fashionable piece that was a one-off.” Boom Shankar, Indian for ‘to bless’ was borne and on her return to Australia Dui sold her tops from a small stall at the Eumundi Markets. That was 15 years ago. “I have always felt that Australian women are a bit scared of wearing colour and it’s a shame because wearing colour can completely change your look and your mood,” says Dui who dressed her Barbie dolls in colourful outfits and later was continually questioned by her parents about an eclectic dress sense. “It’s great to see bold colour

It was the foreigners who loved them, beautiful Israeli, French, English and Australian women who loved the idea of reworking

and pattern in fashion, although I‘ve never designed collections around what’s fashionable. I design clothing and textiles that make women feel good. Often it’s a dress or a pair of pants that are fun, comfortable and a little out of the normal to what they would normally purchase and wear.” Suffice to say Boom Shankar defies trends and although there have been challenging times, Dui is ever mindful and has never taken anything for granted. “I do what I was put on this earth to do. business is my life and I have put my life into it. The markets grew so much we opened a warehouse in 2004 and began wholesaling. It was hard going at first. I remember walking the streets of Sydney and going into lots of gorgeous boutiques with a handful of dresses. The rejection was really tough. We now wholesale to over 200 boutiques across Australia and New Zealand and have almost a cult-following of Boom Shankar-wearing women across the globe. Our online store ships internationally and has become so busy we now have two dedicated staffers. We’re featured regularly in Vogue, have a list of fabulous celebrities who love our gear but most of all, we love the women we meet at the warehouse, the markets or online, all telling us how amazing our dresses make them feel. It is incredible that something as simple as a new dress can have such an impact. “It can be difficult to get that balance between designing and creating something from my heart that I love, yet designing something that will be marketable and sell well. Mostly I think people can just relate to a great colourful print on a well-made, flattering garment. That’s my basic design philosophy.”
Dui feels blessed to have a fortunate life filled with opportunities however with life such a struggle in other parts of the world she likes to give back. “I feel it’s important to give back to the communities where we manufacture so lots of projects have been in India,” says Dui who has chosen a remote community on the Pakistan border. “I give them fabrics for each collection and they do feature hand stitching and embroidery on these pieces. The village is really isolated – they are Pakistani refugees and live in very basic conditions. This work gives them their only income. “We also did a great calendar this year to fundraise for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation and that was really well supported with $2500 raised. I am also passionate about animal welfare and support a local Indian charity that vaccinates street dogs. Boom Shankar’s success has enabled me to really make a difference.” And what about the future? “I guess I’ll be still be designing clothes people love to wear, travelling to India plus enjoying my life and the blessings it has given me,” concludes the 38-year old normally fiery Aries.
“With Boom Shankar pieces, people can have fun and add that colourful quirky edge to their wardrobes…”

In a jungle of heat and humidity, this new makeup stays put. Anyone who suffers from oily skin understands the challenges of finding a foundation that offers the right amount of coverage, without feeling too heavy, or causing skin to look shiny and greasy. Some women turn to powders because they're concerned that liquid formulas will clog pores and cause skin to look dirty. However, on oily skin powders may not provide the full coverage needed or even set into lines and wrinkles. Thankfully, Clinique has created a revolutionary makeup that provides a beautiful, flawless finish that helps skin stay matte all day long. $50.00

Founder Cyril Callister
Vegemite facts: Today more than 22 million jars of Vegemite are sold each year, but when the salty black paste was first produced in 1923 the public wasn’t interested. In fact, it took another fifteen years and a world war before we embraced it. Cyril Callister was a passionate scientist and innovator, and his story is inextricably bound with that of Australia in the first half of the twentieth century, through two world wars and The Depression. He was the grandson of a gold miner who arrived in Ballarat in the 1850s. His own father, a widower, raised a small army of children, and Cyril was the first to go to university. He was sent to England during WWI and in the 1920s was employed by the flamboyant and entrepreneurial Fred Walker, charged with the task of creating a spread that would, in time, be named Vegemite. Cyril remained at Kraft until his death in 1949. The Man Who Invented Vegemite by Jamie Callister, Murdoch Books, $29.99

Toast to success... The Callisters, according to Helen Flanagan are the epitome of happy little Vegemites.
It was while walking along the Tanglewood Track of the Noosa National Park that Jamie and Libby first talked seriously about a book and a movie. Once Jamie had a publisher on board, he would take Nick (now 16), Sophie (18), Jamie and Lucy (14) surfing in the morning before school, come home and write during the day and go surfing again in the afternoon. “It was a great way of life and occasionally I would tell people that my grandfather invented ove blossomed on Phillip Island’s Penguin Reserve when Vegemite and they were astonished. t proved to be a propitious move from the Mornington Peninsula for Julie Holland and partner Greg Peeler. They were attracted by the warmer climes and beauty of Noosa, the children had left home, space at the Eumundi Markets confirmed their creative ideas were on the right track and the move to Hastings Street proved they were. “The dominoes just fell our way,” explains Julie who thinks the continuing thread of work is a sense of soul instilled by her watchmaker/jeweller grandfather Jordan Llewellyn Croucher and evident in a white gold and sapphire bracelet he made for her 18th birthday, which she still wears today. In the meantime, Greg put on hold his flourishing real estate career, Julie uses her background in public relations and writing to advantage and both embraced their new lifestyle and business. “We couldn’t shake my family jewellery connection, so Jewellery by Croucher was formed,” says Julie who wanted to further her writing from children’s readers such as The Big Green Caterpillar and adopt a more personal style. “We sourced a local jeweller to custom make sterling silver pendants and rings, Greg found ways to include my images with framed inspirational words and evocative photographic images on cards plus his original peg frames which were an immediate winner. It’s all been a wonderful progression. Sometimes you just have to walk down the other side of the street for a while to find another side of you.” “It was also important to us to include other original works,” explains Greg adding links with over a dozen Queensland and Australian artists have been made. “Kate Morrison makes our cute owl cushions and bunting; we stock the D’Vine Flavours range; Ellen Appleby provides a range of her amazing ceramics; and from Studio Sabinne come coasters and trays. Our jewellery is supplemented by Anita, a Brisbane jeweller, whilst Leanne Dew adds loads of colour with her wet felting range. The Babanees stools, made by local furniture maker Tim Scarce, have been a huge success. “Tom & Peggy, named after their grandparents by Tanya and Damien Lange, is a range known for their fun location and surf plaques. Some of the original art works are on the walls. In addition the Langes print Hearts and Minds Art t-shirts and tea towels for us. It’s a new printing technique using original photographs.” “There are so many clever local people with interstate and international visitors constantly amazed, “ says Julie, the ‘card lady’, adding their two dogs are a constant delight. “Roxy is a Rhodesian Ridgeback and B is a black lab whose real name is Black Betty Bamalam. Don't laugh! “We meet wonderful people instore, and hear many stories. Some happy; some sad. Many are drawn to my writing and my words actually do contribute to their lives and help express where they're at. There are many quotes around but people are looking for originality. “We really believe some things in life are meant to be.”

ased on over 22 years of expertise, 11 years of award wins, and Nioxin’s unique skin care approach to hair care - one that treats the scalp skin as well as the hair. It consists of six three-part systems and additional specific treatments that can be combined for a truly customised solution. When trialled, the three-part systems have been proven to successfully combat thinning hair, with 70% of users noticing their hair looked thicker and denser after just two weeks of daily use. Clinical testing also shows that the additional Nioxin Density Restoration Treatment is so effective that it helps reduce hair fall from breakage and environmental factors by an average of 54%. Researchers investigated the biological factors that influence hair thinning, revealing three factors that can impact the hair’s appearance and condition: • there is a clear link between a healthy scalp and healthy hair • hair and scalp needs vary throughout hair growth cycles • the hair changes in structure over time due to influences such as ageing For Nioxin, thinning hair equals hair that has less volume and fullness. • fewer hair strands from hair fall and breakage • finer hair strands due to the hair’s structure changing over time • a poor scalp environment due to product and sebum build-up Finding the right solution to your hair thinning needs is as easy as answering three short questions; firstly the degree of hair thinning; secondly, whether it is fine or medium/coarse; and finally, whether it is natural or colour treated. Each system contains custom technologies and ingredients that are specifically tailored to the individual needs of your hair and scalp to create thicker, fuller hair. Peregian Beach... Seaside chic melds with village hum...
A
bout 13 kilometres south of Noosa Heads, Peregian Beach is one of a string of lovely beaches between Noosa and Coolum. Just over the sand hills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of wallum heath which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in spring. On the western side of Peregian Beach is Lake Weyba National Park, and Lake Weyba itself, which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. Nearby, too, is the southern extension of the Noosa National Park with a rich mix of coastal heath and scrub and stately rainforest which provides sanctuary and support for a wealth of native flora and fauna. Peregian Village is sophisticated yet has all the charm of a coastal village. Stores are stocked with gorgeous homewares, stationary, office essentials, quirky and classy gifts and of course must-have accessories, beautiful boutiques for him, her and baby too, trendy surf fashion, beauty therapists who fully understand the meaning of serene and the many cafes are renowned for fresh, exciting fare. Two Sundays a month the Peregian Markets is a must visit – a hive of activity, creativity, fresh produce and fun. Many fashion labels start off here so keep an eye out. You could be wearing tomorrow’s look today. The park between the Peregian Surf Club and the lifeguard tower is a vibrant sight as locals and visitors stroll around the market and spill over into the village cafes and grassed area to read their Sunday papers and sip on a latte as the children lick the best ice creams around and play on the green. Earlier in the morning see walkers heading home along the road or the beach with a baguette tucked under one arm and a basket of local produce in the other. Need more convincing? Just ask Ange Takats, a Peregian-based author, journalist and musician who’s working on her second album called Arva: "As a musician who tours a lot interstate, I never grow tired of coming home to Peregian and I wouldn't choose to live anywhere else in Australia,” she says. “We have a spectacular beach, a vibrant village square, and so far we've managed to keep out the big developers, which has enabled Peregian to retain its quiet, beach town vibe. We've built an amazing live music scene here, thanks to some dedicated local musicians who set up Peregian Originals which is a minifestival, held on the first and third Sunday of the month, in the park next to the Surf
Club. There is no regular community music festival of its kind anywhere else in Australia. This makes me proud as punch. I also love that I can eat food from all corners of the globe, right here in Peregian – Moroccan veggie burgers, Thai green curries, French croissants and modern Australian cuisine...we're spoilt for choice." HTM - High Tide Mark is well known for their quality labels for both men and women. It has a great following on the coast and more exciting new labels and stock are in store for summer! Evolve-mum baby home is a store you arrive at, and take in the visual delight that surrounds you. Filled with treasures of the heart it is a challenge to leave without something gorgeous! Established in 2005 in the square at Peregian Beach, it is fondly known for exquisite baby wear, children's clothing, handbags you fall in love with, accessories, women's fashion, pregnancy wear, unique toys, books and crafty things that make your heart sing. A small taste of the labels you will find are, Purebaby, Peggy, Munster, Electric Boy, Chookleaf, Nancybird, Sisken, Elk, Wilson, Mesop, Song, Frey, Ripe, Soon, Bajo, Britt and Mae. If you are looking for something superb, something that feels beautiful, something that inspires make Evolve-mum.baby.home your destination. Wahoo Seafood’s alfresco dining and BYO experience is popular with families and couples alike with delicious meals such as crab risotto. The takeaway section is noticeably thriving as families, surfers and couples put in their orders for a night in or alternatively picnicking on the 'green' with such taste sensations such as calamari strips. Very more-ish. Carmel’s Designs label is a timeless, classical garment range designed for lifestyle dressing. "My inspiration is my natural environment. I live by the sea and I am influenced by that lifestyle." says Carmel The natural environment influences Carmel's choices - and her choice of natural fabrics such as linens and cottons, which are cool and light. With the addition of light knits for texture, silks for soft draping and elegance - her designs offer women the perfect mix of chic eclectic styles and simplicity of design. Even the four-legged members of your family are catered to in Peregian Beach with water and tethering stations dotted around the Square.

Footloose and fancyThere’s an aura of being a freespirited soul but as Helen Flanagan discovered Cindy LeBrun is very grounded… well some of the time.
international celebrities, you could be forgiven for thinking that Cindy LeBrun prefers to cut loose and not follow a particular career path. True. “I wanted to do lots of things,” confesses Sydneyborn Cindy, a Gemini, aged 25 whose ethnicity is Mauritian.“It’s the waste of a good adventure for me to do otherwise. And just going with the universal flow has led me to some amazing situations.” At the triple zero emergency centre in Brisbane, executive assistant Cindy witnessed an accident in front of the building. “The driver had overdosed on heroin, was dying and couldn’t breathe so I pulled him out of a car full of needles to open his passage way, then run into triple zero to make a call to triple zero,” recalls Cindy, who then moved on to became a talent booker for an American-based acting and model agency owned by Lou Pearlman the manager of Backstreet Boys and NSync. Back in Noosa she successfully created and published a black and white art house coffee table rom producing a book called xposure, and followed with a stint at an coffee-table book, advertising agency with clients such as Hanson starting a pop-up corporate, the largest aggregate company in the shop, studying for a world. “I experienced the most unusual photo shoots Bachelor of Metaphysical including wearing full hazard gear to head Science to underground and capture the construction of marketing a Sydney’s cross-city tunnel. Noosa “That was great fun until the newly refurbed Rolling night Rock offered me the role of marketing and club and entertainment manager after I’d complained to one of pressing the owners on opening night, that the makeover was the flesh out of sync with the branding. During my year there, with international entertainment included Benny Bennassi and regular national number one DJs from Ministry of Sound and RnB Superclub plus we were in the national finals for nightclub of the year (2005) alongside some of the best new establishments in Melbourne and Sydney. That was big.” Next stop USM in marketing and sponsorship for events such as the Noosa Tri, Jazz Festival and the Noosa Longweekend. A serious taste for the events industry meant a move to Sydney and within two weeks she’d secured a job at SIBOS, the world’s largest financial event, wining and dining with CEOs and schmoozing with the likes of Kylie Minogue. The Sydney Opera House proved a learning curve into the world of ballet and opera, and whilst meeting Dame Joan Sutherland was a thrill, she felt the need to return to the bosom of Noosa. Out of the blue, leading celebrity agent Max Markson requested she join the company. “I worked on gala events with famous people such as Al Gore, Sugar Ray Leonard and Olivia Newton John, Eddie McGuire, Ita Buttrose, Ray

free Martin, Marcia and Deni Hines, The Veronicas, Dean Geyer, Tara Reid, Mark Beretta and more,” says Cindy recalling her excitement. “I once flew to Melbourne to have lunch with Australian boxing legend Barry Michaels and gangster Mick Gatto. Then there was the time I had too much to drink with Leo Sayer and told him I loved his song Wired for Sound … big mistake! And pulling out all stops for a client who wanted Prime Ministers to sign a bottle of Grange for a charity auction was a huge mission during election time however somehow I managed within a week to get four. I still don’t know how.” In-between gigs, Noosa was never far off Cindy’s radar, doing bits and bobs from promotional work for Zinc FM, organising events at the Boathouse’s Sunset Bar and opening Liquid, a pop-up bar in Hastings Street with owner of Franks Gym, Kym Everett. We were bored of the same old places to socialise so created our own for just six weeks in summer. These days life is far less frenetic at the Lexis English College, monitoring her fashion accessory website, freelancing for designer Richard De Chazal, plus completing her degree, which involved healing therapy and psychic development. Cindy values her social life with friends and family but is open to the next thrilling episode.“I’d love to go tornado chasing in Colorado, also meet a tall, dark handsome local man. Let me know if you fit the bill,” sighs effervescent and ever hopeful Cindy.

1. Catch him doing it right, praise and reward. If you like the way Christian Grey keeps Ana’s desire bubbling along all day with attention and affection, plant this idea in your man’s mind. So, for example, if a morning cuddle sets up your day, wake up and snuggle back into him. After a while say ‘God wake up cuddles turn me on. I’m going to throw myself at you tonight.’ Then – and this is crucial – make love to him that night. I guarantee you, that man will be ‘cuddling your brains out’ every single morning from then on. I know it seems a bit like training a dog, but if you reward ‘good behaviour’ you’ll get what you want and he thinks he’s ‘cracked the code’ and he’s your hero.

or Mr Grey 2. A third person in your bedroom Many women say they love how Christian Grey is obsessed with getting better and better in bed. But if you just say to your bloke ‘I’d like us to learn more about sex’, many will think you’re just saying ‘You’re crap in bed.’ A great way to plant new ideas into a man’s mind – especially with touchy subjects like sex – is to suggest things in the third person. So mention in passing that one of the girls at work read Fifty Shades with her boyfriend, and he said: ‘I get golf lessons to be better at golf, and read books on business, why don’t we try to learn more about sex?’
3. Everybody’s doing it. Christian encourages Ana to explore every aspect of her sexuality in a safe environment. If you’d like a bit more of this without your fella getting annoyed, use the technique that marketers have been using for years called ‘Social Proof.’ That’s when ads say ‘Brand X is the most popular detergent’ so we think if everyone is using it, it must be great. (Lets face it, you probably read Fifty Shades of Grey is because everyone else was.) So fib a bit and tell your man you read an article saying ‘thousands of women’ have reported feeling totally accepted by their lover is what they need to turn on their desire and have lots and lots sex.’ Then watch him blurt out ‘There is nothing you could say that would turn me off you. I love you and just want you to be thrilled with our sex life.’ Sure, that last technique is an out and out fiction, and a cynical manipulation of people’s desires just to get a selfish result. But then again, so are the Fifty Shades books. ;)
'Fifty Shades of Blokes Trilogy' by L.O.L. James Fifty Shelves of Grey, Fifty Spades of Grey and Fifty Shades of Grass These hilarious gift books follow the story of handyman Dave, who does some work for a young entrepreneur named Christina, and discovers her desire for something ‘a bit rough’. The unworldly, innocent Dave – like almost every man before him – has no idea what’s going on, and believes Christina simply shares his passion for sports, DIY and gardening. With every story written the way men would like it – incredibly short – this series is a parody that will leave you asking, “How do men and women ever get together?” Available from Big Sky Publishing RRP $14.99 each www.bigskypublishing.com.au

Fast forward from the classic TV series All Creatures Great and Small, which was based on books written by veterinary surgeon Alf Wight under the pseudonym James Herriot, to all things bright and beautiful veterinary-wise today.
W
ith a father in the mining industry Kalgoorie-born Craig Marshall, his mother, two sisters and a younger brother were always on the move. To Weipa in Cape York, Castlemaine in Victoria and then to Wau in the goldfields of Papua New Guinea, the 9-year old thought he had arrived in the promised land - horse riding through the coffee plantations, playing on the abandoned (and immense) gold dredges, collecting insects and other wildlife and living a fairly unrestricted and adventuresome life in the cultural and natural smorgasbord of the country. “They were the best years of my childhood,” Craig, an avid fan of wildlife documentaries such as Attenborough and Harry Butler, recalls. “The wealth of wildlife was a catalyst for an interest in biology and the natural world, and it set me on the path to the pinnacle of animal studies, veterinary science. “We always had dogs and cats growing up, augmented in PNG with tree snakes, cus cus gliders and other wildlife rescued from being sold live for food at the markets. Most of these refugees were released although I did keep the python.” After graduating in veterinary science at the University of Queensland, Craig’s first job was in a very mixed practice in South Australia. “We handled a lot of sheep and cattle as well as the usual run of dogs, cats and horses. This was around the time of the ostrich industry and a large farm which had set up locally, became my responsibility. The manager was an AFL player who would

habitually practice tackles on these Jurassic Chooks as he called them. It was quite an experience coming to grips with these 70 kilograms birds which are powered by a brain the size of a walnut. There were some unexpected outcomes but fortunately neither of us were seriously hurt!” Back on the east coast after three years, to Wauchope on NSW’s mid north coast to another mixed practice, this time attending to dairies cattle, horses and beef producers and in his spare time wooing Michelle who swears she’d been set-up initially by mutual friends. “She saw through it immediately however after bothering her a lot she eventually conceded to a date,” he laughingly confesses, adding “I took her to all the romantic places I could think of and eventually managed to win her over. After the big day we lived and worked in England and also did community work in Fiji desexing animals through the local SPCA.” Back in Australia he set up a small animal practice in Port Macquarie and Eva, now 8 and Rosa now 5 were born. After hitting the reset button in 2009, the Marshalls headed north to Pomona to where Craig’s parents had retired. A year ago James was born, little Ace, a long-haired Jack Russell terrier who is now a teenager moved in, while Michelle who has a hardwired Irish affinity with horses, indulged her passion with Sunny, Cienna and Tessa. Spending days as a locum in a practice gave him itchy feet and the idea of combining the roving nature
of the farm work he enjoyed so much with the less time demanding aspects of small animal practice, seemed the way to go. Besides large animal work and the after-hours load associated with it didn’t dovetail with family life. “I’ve found that consultations in the home environment are much more relaxed for all involved and it is good to be able to give each case the time and attention it deserves, without the pressure of a waiting room full of people and pets,” explains Craig who set-up Get the Vet house calls. “I enjoy being in charge of my time, meeting people and the relationship that can develop with clients is something I’ve never experienced in a clinic setting. “A sense of purpose is derived from achievement and in a veterinary setting, this manifests itself when a patient that has been struggling for quality of life or has a debilitating condition is returned to being comfortable and happy. It amazes me how well bodies will take to the healing process given the right conditions. Some of the most traumatic presentations while allowing for perseverance will return to health. I remember a horse that had effectively ringbarked its lower limb and after a month or so of intensive treatment, I got her back into action. The change in the owner from despair to relief and delight was priceless. “Ironically, part of the role of a veterinarian is to provide relief through euthanasia and the most glowing endorsements are often from clients who

have had to make the wrenching decision to have a pet put to sleep. It’s surprising how appreciative people are when the pain of loss is at least partly assuaged by a peaceful goodbye.” Craig admits to treating most animal species from pet rats to removing lorikeets from fingers (his). “I’ve treated snakes with skin disorders, desexed ferrets, vasectomised tomcats, repaired prolapsed ducks, facilitated free sex in a priapic Staffy, splinted the fractured leg of a chicken, removed a drumstick from the windpipe of a Chihuahua and a tennis ball from the intestines of a Labrador. And inevitably I’m dealing with the person at the end of the lead or holding the cage and there-in lies some characters. A client came to me with his dog and requested we consult ‘somewhere private’. I took him into a darkened back room where he looked about furtively before leaning over conspiratorially, saying in a low voice between clenched teeth “he eats his own s--t!” When time permits Craig enjoys a strum on his guitar or ukulele, exploring on his mountain bike and sketching landscapes, fishing, martial arts plus a hit of Clandestino coffee from Café Le Monde, lunch in Cooroy or seafood from the Red Emperor, with Michelle is always something to look forward to. Craig believes he’s found nirvana where lifestyle and business go hand-in-hand: “There is no dress rehearsal for life so we try our best to enjoy each day and make the most of our family times”.

igh-profile neighbours in the much-desired area of Sunshine Beach include zany former Hey Hey star Jackie MacDonald, tennis aces Pat Rafter and Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, former prime minister Kevin Rudd, playwright David Williamson and author wife Kristin, business identity Bob Ansett plus familiar faces from television Daniel McPherson, Jo Beth Taylor and Sally Jenyns. Similarly countless business folk and celebs from Brisbane and south of the border, even overseas call it their home away from home. So what is the magnet? They all cherish the laidback lifestyle and privacy yet consider the Sunshine Beach village is their backyard and are avid fans of its eclectic meld of places to shop, eat and drink without paparazzi and autograph hunters.. Sunshine Beach, once known as Golden Beach, is also a popular choice for visitors who choose to stay in apartments with salty summer breezes or spread out and luxuriate in multi-million dollar mansions with access to the beach.
“Living here is like heaven. I try not to take it for granted and savour every moment. To have it all at your doorstep, beautiful beach, spectacular walks and a great restaurant culture to enjoy with people from all walks of life is a blessing Robert Mrozowski, long time local.

“I visited Noosa for work a few months back and went for dinner at Pasta Pronto because they were offering a meal/movie deal. I at down waiting to be served and had a nice chat with the lovely waiter. I ordered the fresh pasta with pesto – my way and sipped on the complimentary glass of shiraz. Whilst looking at the nice décor my eyes stumbled across a painting on the back wall of the restaurant. To my surprise and delight I saw my own village hanging right there, staring at me, calling me to shout ‘wow’! Of all the things I would expect, the least was to see my tiny Italian village …so far away from home. I was ecstatic … My village called Vernazza is one of five fabulous towns north-west of the Riviera called Cinque Terre. That is where I met my wife who brought me to this wonderful country. “Thank you for making my day, also the wonderful freshly made pasta. Tomorrow I think I’ll have the carbonara.” Salute Pasta Pronto. Praise indeed from Valentino Giannoni who was taught the art of making traditional artisan gelati by his father Giuseppe at the family-owned gelato bar in Vernazza. Just how much little Valentino really learned though is debatable. There is however no disputing his palate for fresh flavours.

or the past five years, Gavin and Angela Piper at Costa Noosa have created some of the finest coffee on the Sunshine Coast based at their boutique coffee shop in Sunshine Beach (Noosa). In a relatively short time, their efforts have been rewarded by an impressive array of medals for their high quality coffee roasts. In the 2010/11 CSR Golden Bean Roasting1 competition, against more than 1000 competitors around Australia, they were awarded a silver medal in the Golden Bean Overall category, silver in the Espresso category for their signature Espresso Noosa blend and bronze in the Australian coffee category. This follows the success in the same competition in the previous year where Costa Noosa won two bronze medals in the Australian Milk-Based and Filter categories with their Capricorn bean. In 2012/2013 they won a bronze in the espresso category for their Noosa Espresso, a second bronze for their Capricorn in the syphon/filter category and a third bronze for their Capricorn in the Australian grown coffee category. “Our Espresso Noosa blend is 100% Arabica and delivers a rich, velvety crema and full-bodied flavour. The Capricorn is a single origin bean grown on the Atherton Tableland and has a smooth, rich custard and chocolate palate. Arabica beans grown in high altitude, high rainfall tropical climates give a sweeter flavoured coffee," said roaster Gavin. "Someone described us as ‘laid-back coffee nerds‘," said Gavin with a grin. "And I take that as a compliment. We are absolutely passionate about our coffee.” 1.The CSR GoldenBean Coffee Roaster Competition creates ‘golden’ opportunities for the Australian coffee industry. very visitor and local knows Lindoni’s Ristorante Italiano in Hastings Street. It’s the benchmark of fine Italian dining and next year marks its 25th anniversary. What an achievement especially considering that Rio and Amanda Capurso bought it in 2007 from the original owner and Rio managed the restaurant for ten years before that. These days there’s a greater emphasis on traditional regional specialities and given there are four Italians all from different regions working together, that’s hardly surprising. “The diversity of regional heritage means that we can draw inspiration from various regions depending on the season and the availability of fresh produce,” explains Rio who hails from the South so he leans to the lighter side where there’s an emphasis on vegetables and seafood. “Andrea Ravezzani from Milan heads the kitchen team which comprises Davide Benati from Emilia and Nicola Cisilino, both from Fruili, who have

The Hart of cheesemaking Silky textured buffalo milk haloumi and delicate, milky, fresh mozzarella, handcrafted by Trevor Hart are on the menus at some of Australia’s hottest restaurants.
M
aleny’s Trevor Hart is a bespoke cheesemaker and jazz trumpeter who’s had music imbedded in his psyche since he was four. From his teens he’s played professionally, leading his own band the Trevor Hart Quartet also an orchestra plus he’s a composer for theatre, cabaret and film. “Cutting curds and music are both about balance,” explains the owner of Maleny micro producer Cedar Street Cheeserie who spends about 10 hours at a stretch in his tiny cheese room lovingly hand-crafting cheeses which “take on a beautiful rhythm. With food, the elements can be contrasting but they also need to be in balance. Like jazz, a certain amount of improvisation is required to deal with seasonal changes. Also milk is like wine. It has terroir and changes all the time too. You need to be able to work with these changes when making quality cheese. “I am just happy to be part of a long tradition making mozzarella di buffala, haloumi and bocconcini from pure and unadulterated fresh buffalo milk which comes from Mal and Margaret Thompson's dairy in Witta, just five minutes down the road. “The Thompsons have a small herd of about 40 buffalo. The milk has a sweetness and texture that cow's milk doesn't have. It’s beautiful to work with and its superiority is obvious when you compare buffala to fiore de latte although making it is simultaneously simple and difficult. To handmake with consistency a delicate fresh product takes lots of practise and failures. Apart from mozzarella, bocconcini and haloumi I also make the very creamy burrata which I call A Love Supreme!” Starting out Trevor experienced hiccups. At his first cheesemaking course

"I kept dropping the cheese and mine turned out all lopsided. But it ignited something in me and I thought, 'this isn't going to defeat me'… Cedar Creek haloumi and watermelon salad with Queensland cheese guru Graham Redhead five years ago, Trevor says he was the worst student. "I kept dropping the cheese and mine turned out all lopsided. But it ignited something in me and I thought, 'this isn't going to defeat me'. Later producer Richard Mohan, a pimientos de Padron grower at Midyim Eco Resort, suggested I send cheese to Melbourne for some chefs to sample, the result being it went on the menus at some of Melbourne's hottest restaurants such as Cutler & Co, Cumulus, Bar Lourinha, The Press Club and Alla Wolf-Tasker’s Lake House. I also supply Maggie Beer. “My wife, high profile ceramist Shannon Garson and I love haloumi with watermelon and Persian rice, mozzarella with pimentos de Padron, also Love Supreme with roasted pumpkin and caraway seeds.” Famed foodie Lyndey Milan says “Trevor makes the only haloumi you can eat without cooking – though it is delicious cooked too. The fantastic artisanal product is soft and pliable rather than firm and squeaky.” At this year’s delicious magazine’s Produce Awards, Trevor’s Cedar Street Cheeserie won the artisan dairy section. “Haloumi has traditionally been done better overseas, but we’re now hitting the mark in Australia,” said judge Simon Marnie. Martin Duncan thinks the Cedar Street haloumi and spiced spinach dish which Christine Manfield demonstrated at his Freestyle Escape cooking class was superb and Sails’ executive chef Paul Leete says haloumi grilled and torn through a tabbouleh style salad of fried chick peas, organic black quinoa, charred lemon, parsley and mint with a peri peri basted Moya Valley chicken is one of the best-selling chicken dishes he’s ever had on the menu. Belmondos’ chef Patrick Williams regards buffalo mozzarella on a Mediterranean vegetable stack as a beautiful combination as is sliced or cubed in a range of salads from Greek to Italian. Shane Bailey, the executive chef of berardo’s has been a huge fan since meeting Trevor at the Noosa Farmers Market. Currently he has a haloumi, compressed watermelon, duck prosciutto with a grapefruit gel dish on the current menu but it’s his recipe for haloumi and watermelon salad that’s proved to be a winner in the request stakes since it was demonstrated at the Noosa International Food & Wine Festival and on Ten’s Yes Chef.

Poh Ling Yeow Following the Spice of Life… Prawn and Pineapple Curry Serves 5-6
Prep Time 30 minutes
Cooking Time 30 minutes
Ingredients • 1kg prawns de-shelled and cleaned OR 650g of a firm fleshed fish • 500g pineapple, cut into 6mm triangles 500ml water • 3 pieces dried tamarind 5 kaffir lime leaves 350ml coconut milk • 2-3 tsp salt • 3 Tbs caster sugar • 2 Tbs lime juice for balancing Rempah (wet spice paste) • 15-20 dried long red chillies*, deseeded*, soaked in boiling water until soft, drained and chopped 2 1/2 tsp belacan • 3 cm fresh galangal, peeled, sliced finely • 4 stalks lemongrass (white part only), sliced finely • 300g red eschallots OR Spanish onion, peeled and sliced 3 large cloves garlic, peeled and halved • 5 candlenuts or macadamia nuts • 170ml vegetable oil * Dried chillies – There are several types of dried chillies. For this recipe, please choose the type that are about finger sized. The smaller ones are very hot and the broader, larger ones mild. Also please never replace dried chillies with fresh ones as they don’t impart the smokiness of flavour and depth of colour required for this dish. * Deseeding dried chillies – To easily deseed the dried chillies, cut them into quarter segments with scissors and drop them into a colander with large holes and then shake the seeds out. Method Blitz all rempah ingredients in a blender until you achieve a fine paste. Heat rempah in a large, heavy based saucepan or wok on medium heat and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring continuously until caramelised and fragrant. At this point the rempah should have turned a darker red and the oil will begin to separate from the rest of mixture. Add pineapple, water, tamarind, kaffir lime leaves and bring to boil, then reduce heat to simmer for another 10 minutes. Add coconut milk, salt and sugar and bring to boil, then add prawns/fish at very end to cook for 5-10 minutes or until cooked through. Taste just before serving. More salt, sugar or lime juice may be required to balance flavours at the end. Serve with steamed jasmine rice and wedges of cucumber just in case your lips need cooling! • Place 10ml olive oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat and sear haloumi for 40 seconds each side until lightly golden. Drain on paper towel for 30 seconds then place on top of salad. Serve immediately.

A fruity twist for summer... Giesen release three new Strongbow Summer Fruits vintages from The Brothers
A
The History Of Australian Wine by Max Allen, Melbourne University Publishing, $49.99
T
here’s a story lurking inside every bottle,” are the opening words to the beautifully illustrated fascinating inside account of the Australian wine industry including first-hand recollections from winemakers, cellar hands, business leaders and grape growers plus personal insights into how Australian wine has received its phenomenal international reputation. From the horse-drawn plough to innovative winemaking technology and changing tastes as a nation of wine drinkers, the stories reveal plenty of larrikins and pioneers. Charismatic leaders mentored each generation and imbued a strong sense of collaboration and mateship, and bloody-minded individuals fiercely steered their own course and inspired many. At the heart of it all beats a powerful sense of resilience. Vignerons have always faced challenges, but it has been in times of extreme adversity that the industry has taken its greatest leaps forward and allowed us to reflect on an everevolving and complex industry.

These three new vintage wines come from small blocks in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley. Each vintage the winemaker selects the season’s premium grapes which truly reflect the unique characteristics of the vintage and these create The Brothers wines. Nothing says Summer like Champagne... NV Champagne Duperrey Premier Cru Brut ($44.99), based on chardonnay and pinot noir, is derived from select parcels of premier cru and grand cru vineyards from the Vallée de la Marne. It is aged on yeast lees for at least three years, which results in extra fruit complexity and depth of flavour. Typically it possesses white flower, dried apricot, hazelnut, brioche aromas, plenty of mid-palate creaminess and richness, fresh acidity and underlying yeasty complexity. NV Duperrey Rosé Champagne ($44.99) is a blend of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier and based predominantly on premier cru vineyards. Aged on yeast lees for around three years, this classic style is arguably the best value champagne rosé in the Australian market. It has a lovely salmon pink colour, light strawberry/ red cherry/ yeasty aromas, plenty of fruit complexity, richness and crunchy long acidity. 2005 Duperrey Vintage Champagne ($59.99) is a refined and elegantly proportioned style based predominantly on premier and grand cru vineyards. This seductive chardonnay pinot noir blend typically shows intense lemon curd/ white peach/ pear/ honey aromas, fresh creamy lemon curd/ biscuity/ yeasty flavours, light chalky texture and crisp refreshing acidity.

enowned for its quality and consistency, The Grant Burge Wines Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV is now a leading Australian sparkling, and is widely recognised as a premium, authentic sparkling wine. Grant and his wife Helen, have always focused on one simple philosophy for the family owned business; to create wines of character and value from the beautiful Barossa Valley and surrounding regions, on which they would be proud to put their names. So it was no surprise to learn that their Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay beat an impressive field of entries to be voted the nation's Best Australian Sparkling Wine recently, at the Australian Liquor Industry Awards. he new release champagne from Pol Roger is a rich salmon pink colour with a fine stream of small bubbles. The rosé has aromas of ripe fruits, with elements of citrus fruits, pomegranate and red berries. With creamy ripeness and a hint of vanilla, this beautiful rosé is an ideal match to salmon and delicate meats. Better still it’s a great start to lunch with friends and family. Revered around the world and regarded as the ‘gentleman’s champagne’, the House of Pol Roger represents excellence, independence and integrity, much like the modern gentleman. The Big Pineapple There are about 150 ‘big things’ around Australia from Big Banana, Big Merino and the Big Beer Can, to the sweetest one of all, the Big Pineapple which, according to general manager Brendan Weatherill, remains the centrepiece of the once popular attraction as it’s being returned to greatness.
The Big Pineapple went through a rough patch, so what’s the latest? The now heritage-listed 15 metre high, fibreglass Big Pineapple was built in 1971 but after several owners, the flagging 400-acre Big Pineapple plantation, working macadamia farm with train, cafe and tourist shopping was eventually sold to Brisbane businessmen in 2011. The Big Pineapple itself continues to provide a grand lookout via an internal staircase and a platform at the top and for the first time in four years pineapples have been planted by local growers who’ve also become the custodians. Visitors can see they don’t grow on trees or under the ground! This is all part of the focal point or hub for food-based businesses that also includes the macadamia plantation and the macadamia processing shed. Apart from the markets, the main building is also a large capacity function centre and entertainment venue.
What are some of the other things to do and see? The place comes alive with foodies, artisans and local growers plus live music every Saturday from 6.30am to noon with the biggest all-weather market on the coast. The animal farm with llamas, alpacas, donkeys, ponies, miniature horses, cows, sheep, pigs, goats, ducks and chickens is a natural extension to the markets. It’s also interactive and informative with the barn and its displays of animals and their products, working as an educational tool for families and schools. The ‘stars’ of the farm seem to be Ebony a beautiful, black alpaca orphan and Babe, a miniature razorback pig, who thinks she’s a dog. The pineapple train ride is a must and of course the parfaits are still the best.
Some of Australia’s and New Zealand's hottest acts, booked for one almighty music festival on 20 April 2013 include Birds of Tokyo, Aussie rock legends Grinspoon
What are your plans for an annual Indie/ Rock music festival, equal in scale and national impact to Splendour in the Grass? Some of Australia’s and New Zealand's hottest acts, booked for one almighty music festival on 20 April 2013 include Birds of Tokyo, Aussie rock legends Grinspoon, Regurgitator, British India, New Zealand powerhouse Black Seeds, Hermitude, multi award-winning Ash Grunwald, as one of Australia’s finest live performers, has been deservedly credited with bringing blues and roots to a new generation, also OKA, Bobby ALU, Kingswood, Sticky Fingers, Chance Waters, Dialectrix, Cheap Fakes, Andy Dub, The Leisure Bandits and many more. Festival co-director Mark Pico and I are absolutely stoked at the line-up we’ve pulled together with a healthy serving of Rock, Roots, Reggae and Electronica. In an effort to drive extra tourism to the Sunshine Coast, we’ll be giving away 100 double tickets to New Zealanders who want to jump on an Air New Zealand plane to the Sunshine Coast and get amongst the festivities. The plan is to throw open the entire site for the Big Pineapple Music Festival with purpose-built amphitheatres on both sides of the Nambour Connection Road, as well as a camping site.
Brendan Weatherill Brendan Weatherill is a fourth generation local whose family go back to the pioneering days of Eumundi and Nambour. An uncle drove the train at the Big Pineapple and second cousins worked in the cafe and the parfait bar. As a chef and restaurateur Brendan has travelled extensively and worked nationally and internationally in restaurants and hotels, on super yachts plus as a consultant. His was the owner/chef of the extraordinarily popular Dish in Thomas Street Noosaville for many years and has a flair for events such as the Golden Days Music Festival in Coolum, which he has organised with business partner Mark Pico for the last two years. Brendan says he is determined to drive everything related to the Big Pineapple.“I won’t be told what or what not I can’t do because I know anything is possible.” NoosaStyleLiving

From beach fashion, to the bright lights and the serious business of big city hotels, Cate Young tells Helen Flanagan about her entrepreneurial ways and devotion to ultimate interior design.
W
ith a voracious appetite for design, fashion and textiles, enhanced by a natural talent, it was no surprise to friends and family when Cate Young, aged 19, launched her own resort wear label. Intrigued by the broader scope of design outside of fashion, Cate swapped beaches for buildings and began studying interior design. This soon led to her first interior design project, the sought-after commission to renovate Noosa’s Sails restaurant. Not long after, the All Seasons Hotel Group beckoned her services. It was an offer too good to refuse, so she moved Sydney to head up the interior design team. An exciting time ahead for a girl who was brought up on a lucerne farm outside Rockhampton. “With fashion and interior design I don’t see them as being exclusive to one another,” Cate says with a smile, adding she did think about being a psychologist but the closest she came was marrying one! “I do see design as a universal pool from which we weave and create things. I’m fortunate to have worked in a few different parts of the design industry. My approach is very multidisciplinary so being able to blend skills is a really exciting way to design.”

After three thrilling years renovating 33 hotels, plus design concepts for three new ones, Cate had the confidence to branch out on her own launching Cate Young Design (CYD) with the sole premise of appreciating the existing energy of any site, embracing and nurturing existing good elements - the “aura of a site”, and working to create sublime spaces with soul. It is this very principle that drove Cate to launch Australia’s first ever Design Concept Gallery ’cyd.concept’ in 2003. The gallery mounted installations informed by the history of design, investigating new design concepts. As curator and contributing designer, she collaborated with international and Australian artists and designers on each exhibition. Young used the gallery
Reflections of a Life in Film… Peter Lik stands at the summit of landscape photography. World-renowned, highly awarded, and boasting a huge international following, Lik’s journey had humble origins. Born in Melbourne, Australia, to Czech immigrants, it was his parents’ gift of a Kodak Brownie camera on his eighth birthday that set young Peter’s course.

ntirely self-taught, Lik worked hard at his craft before making a life-changing decision: to come to the United States in 1984. A defining moment in Lik’s life came when he was introduced to the medium format panoramic camera. This larger-than-life camera compelled Peter to rise to its challenge to “Go big or go home.” Lik did both. He returned to Australia to photograph the
vastness of the Great South Land. Highlights of Peter’s American odyssey can be found in his book “Spirit of America.” Lik’s stature as a photographer has been indisputably confirmed with his receipt of the award of Master Photographer from both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He has also been awarded fellowships by the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) and The Royal Photographic Society (RPS). Two more landmarks for Lik were the world record sale of his photograph “One,” for $1 million and the exhibition of two of his

to explore concepts across all design bases: interiors, architecture, graphics, advertising, media, fashion and textiles. The premier installation, Opening, included Akira Isogawa, Schamburg + Alvisse, FY2K, Norman & Quaine, Korban/Flaubert and Spirit Level.. “Less is more and sometimes more is less, is my credo,” she explains, “with Andre’ Putman, France's legendary design doyenne, being somewhat of an inspirational mentor. Similarly internationally renowned French designer Christian Liaigre, who also welcomed me into his Paris studio.” Both designers show a willingness to combine unusual textures, materials, perspectives and histories in their design applications drawing on diverse disciplines such as dance and theatre as well as architecture and design - a willingness Cate exercises in her own approach. “From a design perspective, hotels, like bars, are all about temporary inhabitation. There’s the incidental and accidental interaction with other guests and patrons and the ritual acquaintance with staff that
means the design must have those kinds of encounters written into its fabric. It’s all about the language of contained chance“ The Water Bar at Sydney’s Finger Wharf for the Taj Hotel and Palace Group, the ‘installation’ approach allowed maximum impact for minimum spend. Using existing sculptural fixtures and furniture refurbished in a dark silvery palette, a crystal curtaining, perforated screening strategy and a canopy of chandeliers, the space was segmented to create intimacy and soft illumination despite size and volume. In-between times Cate found time to fully renovate her home in Balmain and design furniture, fittings and even uniforms for her corporate clients.. Time spent in Noosa re-energising the Lobby and River Lounge of the Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa with a long overdue makeover to give it the wow factor, was also a cathartic experience. “Working on the Sheraton was such a delight and in many ways a full circle experience for me having left
iconic images, “Ghost” and “Inner Peace,” in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Lik’s masterworks include “Ancient Spirit,” “Sacred Sunrise,” “Angel’s Heart,” “Tree of Life” and the highly acclaimed “Ghost.” Each Limited Edition release is greeted with great enthusiasm by collectors and this has been reflected in recent record- breaking sales. Now at the top of his game, Peter Lik is “loving it!” at full throttle and the animated Aussie is showing no signs of slowing down.
Noosa 17 years earlier. I think in some ways this planted the seed for us to move back. “Two years later my soul mates - wonderful partner Ambrose, our beautiful daughter Louella and I made the seachange.” What’s next for the 44-year old, who admits to a touch of Aries’ fire? “I’m taking my summer&salt designed UPF 50+ rashies to the next level, opening a fashion and homewares pop-up concept store in Hastings Street and going on more family holidays, like the last one in a great little cabin on Clarkes Beach. It was bliss as we love nature and doing simple things. It’s also very grounding and nurturing. I’m also in the midst of talks with the Peregian Beach Retailers Association about curating a summer festival. I’m very passionate about bringing people together in a creative way”.
And, it doesn't stop there - Peter is keen to give back to society. His philanthropic donations in Australia have been very generous, and amongst his larger donations he supports the Cerebral Palsy Alliance of Australia, as well as the Sony Foundation's 'You Can' Wharf4Ward, which raises funds for youth cancer wards across Australia.

ummer is just around the corner which means cocktail parties and alfresco dining. Japanese Sake is the perfect accompaniment for that fresh salad or delicious sushi platter. Sake or ‘Nihonshu’ is a traditional Japanese rice wine. Unlike our grape wine which generally contains 9%-16% alcohol, Sake usually contains 18%-20% alcohol. When it is served chilled, Sake has a very refreshing and crisp taste. Traditionally Sake is drunk from small cups called ‘choko' and poured from a small ceramic pot called ‘tokkuri’. Impress your friends while entertaining this summer with Concept Japan’s exquisite new pastel coloured Tama Sake cups and pots. Made in Japan from the finest quality ceramic the Sake pots and cups are available in a pastel mint green or a pale Sakura pink. The delicate coloured glaze melts into the round pot creating a freshly-painted look. The pot holds 320ml and the cups are 5 x 3.8cm. Tama Sake pots and cups are exclusive to Concept Japan. want to use the garden primarily for i.e. entertaining, a vegetable garden, children’s play area or perhaps an outdoor room. • Preparation is key – getting drainage right is absolutely essential, then determine soil type, and consider any built structures/landscape construction that’s required i.e.. retaining walls, paving, decking, screens, water features and rockeries. • Planting – walk around your neighbourhood and observe what your neighbours have and what plants work. • Mulching and fertilising – keep as much moisture in the soil as possible and keep weeds at bay. • Styling – finishing touches with attention to detail, complete any look - such as decorative edging (rocks or other forms), outdoor mirrors and outdoor/feature lighting
A visual reference to best 500 plants. These are the tried and tested, the popular cultivars, the ones that won’t turn up their heels and die on you – and are available commercially. Over the last few decades, Australian gardeners have come to see native plants as an opportunity to introduce a sense of place to their landscape, and to link it with the indigenous landscape. Improved cultivars, a better palette of plants to use in garden design, and a new-found pride in the classic shapes, forms and textures of many of the wild species of banksias, grevilleas, gum trees and wattles have opened the eyes of many gardeners. Fully illustrated, there is something for every Australian garden, no matter what climate or soil type.

Complete History of Surfboard Riding in Australia by Phil Jarratt (Hardie Grant $59.95) The complete, no holds barred history of both sides of the story. With forewords by Mark Richards, Layne Beachley and chair of Surfing Australia, Norm Innis, this book tells not just the half century of organised surfing, but of the years of adventure and experimentation that preceded it. Asked to reveal some of the more amazing facts, author and Noosa’s Phil Jarratt said “I was able to uncover and publish for the first time some photos of the first Bells Beach surf event (1962) and the first world championships in Manly (1964) thanks to an interesting Noosa connection. “Local surfing pioneer Lyn Jones found a bunch of very old Kodachrome slides at a junk shop and purchased them for a dollar. On closer examination, she saw that they were of some historical significance, so she cleaned up a selection and donated them to the Surf World Museum in Torquay, where they were soon identified by old timers as being the work of early 60s grommet (and well known Noosan) Warren Evans, who had played a small but important role in the creation of the Vic branch of the Australian Surfriders Association. Warren had also driven to Manly for the first world titles and hung around the competitors tent like a groupie and got some great candid shots of Midget Farrelly and the other heroes of the day. When Warren married and left home, the photos remained in an archive box at his parents' home, and moved with them to Noosa when they retired. When Mr Evans Sr was downsizing to a small unit, he had a merciless clean-up and threw a lot of old stuff out. Warren Evans hadn't even thought about those photos for half a century.”

Artists in Conversation By: Janet Hawley Published by Slattery Media Group: $39.95 "The big difference about my interviews, is that they are very personal meetings… I encourage the artist to speak, in their own words, about why they do what they do. Janet Hawley Artists in Conversation is a beautifully presented collection of essays examining the creative output of some of the greatest Australian artists over the last century, including Ben Quilty, Bill Henson, John Brack, John Olsen, Albert Tucker, Adam Cullen, Sidney Nolan and many more. It also includes chapters on international artists including Picasso's muse Francoise Gilot.
Drawn from thousands of interviews by Janet Hawley, each essay offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the people behind the canvas, exploring all aspects of the creative process including the motivation, the fear, the struggles and the triumphs. he Bolshoi Ballet season comprises 12 performances in QPAC’s Lyric Theatre from 30th May to 9th June, and this outstanding company will present two works never before seen in Australia, the spectacular 19th Century classic Le Corsaire and The Bright Stream, the first revival of this light-hearted ballet since 1935.The company brings with it two magnificent ballets, one representative of the 19th century imperial Russian classical tradition and the second a masterwork from the 20th century. Le Corsaire is a swashbuckling, romantic tale of pirates, slaves and intrigue and is typical of the exotic and ambitious ballets created during the Tsarist era. It is also one of the most spectacular (and expensive!) productions ever staged by the Bolshoi and is a showcase of the company’s talent. The Bright Stream, features an original score written by one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century, Dmitri Shostakovich. A comedic rural romp that incorporates dazzling Cossack and other ethnic dances as well as a hilarious crossdressing spoof of classical ballet, The Bright Stream will charm, delight and surprise Australian ballet lovers. The Bolshoi Ballet was founded in 1776 and is based in the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow. Power of synchronicity and individuality Award-winning artist Julia Carter has exhibited widely and her work is hung in many private and corporate collections around the world.
E
njoying an experimental approach, Julia Carter captures the natural world in breathtaking form weaving textures, symbols and vibrant colour in paintings that overflow with optimism, energy and a sense of celebration. They mirror her attitude to life. “I see connections in nature and my own experiences and love to explore the power of synchronicity and our individual purpose,” explains Julia. “My paintings are landscapes of the soul.” The artistic committee of the International Creative Energy Exhibition, Estense Castle, in Italy’s Ferrara, who invited her to take part, agreed citing “vitality, experimentation, multi-coloured yet harmonious pattern, freedom of thought, purity of expression and above all, the creative energy of life.” The prestigious exhibition opened many international opportunities for Julia including shows in London, Paris and Vienna, however inspired by the beautiful wildflowers of Western Australia, Julia’s recent solo exhibition in the idyllic winery region of the Margaret River was an outstanding success, as was her participation in the Asia Contemporary Art Show in Hong Kong last October for which she has been reselected for next year.

‘Journeys’
Julia has had a life-long obsession with making things, but it wasn’t until she was recovering from an accident she turned to painting. “I felt such a freedom, my cares disappeared and I lost myself in the beautiful colours and textures of the paint,” she describes preferring to mix mediums such as inks, acrylics oil pastels and charcoal, also collage such as skeleton leaves and text and embellishments such as metallic pigment, gold and silver leaf. “I explored many techniques and mediums, studied life drawing and attended workshops and really loved bringing together the many things I learnt. In many ways so many of my dreams or aspirations have already been fulfilled and so I often tell myself to be careful what you wish for. As the ramifications can be pretty challenging, but I know they are part of my personal growth. I definitely have goals and the next major one on my list is to exhibit in New York which I’m doing in March, with gallery representation at the Art Expo New York 2013, Hudson Pier. I’m really excited about the opportunity.” Julia’s goal long term is to have her work in medical ‘healing’ institutions around the world, where she can bring something positive and uplifting to those who need it. “Last year I painted a large triptych of the Western Australian wildflowers, called Eternity representing the spirit of love which never dies. From the beginning I knew it was destined for a special place and through some amazing connections it found its way in the foyer of the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane. I feel completely humbled and grateful.” Julia’s work may be viewed at Gallery Beneath Mooloolaba, Main Street Gallery Montville, or at her Noosa studio. IN BETWEEN CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES SUCH AS THE PROPOSED TRAVESTON CROSSING DAM, UNITYWATER, DEVELOPERS AND TO A FAR LESSER DEGREE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND EARTH HOUR, PUBLICITY MAVEN DEB CARUSO HAS FOUND A BALANCE BETWEEN LIFE AND LOVES.
I think Noosa will always be a distinct area and if we can achieve the benefits of being part of a larger council without losing our identity, then that is the way to go
Deb Caruso
You like to ‘give back’ to the community. In what ways are you involved? With a heart in Noosa, being brought up in Brisbane and I assisted in the establishment the Reed Charity Foundation, work often pulling both ways, have you settled? been involved in the Mater Foundation, AEIOU and WWF, am In 2000, my dreams came true (in the short term as it currently on the Noosa Biosphere Social Board and in training to happened), when I worked for Maroochy Shire Council as go on air for the Noosa Community Radio ‘Voices of the marketing manager delivering events such as CHOGM, the Biosphere’ program plus I’ve signed up to support United inaugural PGA and the original Freedom Air Flights between the Synergies and partners in the delivery of the Noosa Community Sunshine Coast and New Zealand). Since then, I’ve lived in the Garden. Recently I was a judge for the Sunshine Coast Business region on and off and in between lived in Brisbane’s Teneriffe Excellence Awards. I loved meeting local businesses and while husband John worked for Triple M. Meanwhile before uncovering their success stories. Maximus (now aged 3½ was born, I was in corporate Being on the Biosphere Board I hope to engage with the communications with clients such as Brisbane International community in understanding the significance of being in a Airport, The Brisbane Festival, Universities Australia, Abigroup, Biosphere Reserve. It’s all about a healthy community and healthy Reed Property Group, Pauls Milk and National Earth Hour. environment and working together to promote harmony between people and nature through education, conservation and sustainable activities. It can be as simple as saying ‘hello’ to people you meet on the street, looking after each after as well as nature. It can also be quite complex. Some of our best local brains are working on research and development programs which are world-class and ensure the prosperity of future generations.
Deb Caruso The trickiest times however involved water. Working with the Mary Valley community running the community engagement for the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam, showed me what a strong sense of community was all about with a group of people whose way of life had been turned upside down yet they were open to a complete stranger trying to guide them through a formal bureaucratic process. Lucky for them the process worked, their voices were heard and the dam was refused. Some years later I was asked by Unitywater to assist with some issues management. I hadn’t returned to work at this stage after having Max but felt ready to dip my toe into the water again, so to speak. That was like swimming the English Channel with me staying on for 18 months to recover the brand, build trust with customers and the community and establish a communications team to educate and assist customers with areas of concern. better relationship was established but working 60 hours a week to meet all the community groups was exhausting. I’d enough and besides I was missing Max and John had a busy role as regional content director at ABC Coast FM. People may recall his seven years as the Sunshine Coast’s controversial and beloved JC from SeaFM’s Breakfast Show.
What do you think of deamalgamation? Is it possible to wind back the clock when so many dynamics have changed? There are so many conflicting views and sometimes it’s hard to get the full picture. I think Noosa will always be a distinct area and if we can achieve the benefits of being part of a larger council without losing our identity, then that is the way to go. Surely we are strong enough as a community to stand together and maintain our character. Sometimes you have to look at the motivations behind those who claim to ‘speak for us all’. Power can come at a price.
The plight of our koalas! What can we do? I’m horrified about the dwindling numbers of koalas in the Noosa National Park. Gosh it wasn’t that long ago when we’d see one in Hastings Street. I’m really surprised that there are no koalas where we live on acreage in very leafy Doonan. I’d love to introduce and care for koalas on our property. Of course, like any adoption there would need to be a qualification, a screening process and the koalas would require strong support for relocation. So why not use the locals as koala custodians? Life has its wake-up-and-live moments. What’s been yours? When I was struggling with the demands of Unitywater, a very close friend, who also had a 2 year old, was diagnosed with breast cancer. That was a big wake-up call. I quit work, took time to recover, reconnect and rediscover what was important to me. I wanted to also set a good example for Max and to show him that success is not measured in how much you get paid or how important your job is. I now work within my community, have a boutique PR business with my ‘boardroom’ overlooking the pool and some of my best work done under the swaying gums. I spend time at the beach, have rediscovered cooking and am establishing a herb and vegie garden – with Max as a willing assistant. By the way my girlfriend survived her mastectomy and chemo and we’re about to celebrate her 40th birthday!
