The recent Charles Heidsieck dinner was no exception, with head chef James Wu and his team offering guests breathtaking food matches to complement the amazing French Champagne House. Master of Wine, Ned Goodwin delighted Champagne lovers with his stories of adventures in Champagne, as well as the history behind the prestigious House. Guests were treated to four superb wines - the Brut Reserve NV, Brut Reserve 2005, Rosé NV and finishing with the Charles Heidsieck Rosé 2006.

Welcome to our sizzling Summer issue…
I
t's hard not to be excited…Summer is here, even if it rains - it is more exciting because they're summer storms - electricity courses through the air lending it's metallic aura to the heavy drops of liquid sunshine. People tend to find it fun to dodge the falling rain and jump the puddles, as steam rises from the roads. The beach looks more intense and the clouds add an air of artistic exuberance to the landscape. I actually like the occasional summer storm - maybe I'm just a little bit mad! This issue we bring you a glimpse into the life of Australia's award-winning actress, Cate Blanchett, as she talks to us about her eclectic acting choices, her husband and children - and how she manages to blend the two most important parts of her life together. Here is a strong woman, making strong decisions about her life and career. Mesmerising. Then we took an interesting detour to discuss life and work choices with some extremely interesting locals, including Peter Priest, whose amazing journey from his hometown of Noosa to the confronting vista of the Congo, for humanitarian and work makes fascinating.reading. We also introduce you to 'sea/tree changers' Peter and
Lydia, who have ventured from Brisbane to Doonan, to create a new life among the trees for their family, as well as showcasing their internationally-acclaimed German watch collections. This season our boutiques are showcasing the finest ensembles, shoes, handbags, separates and beachwear… sourced from local and international designers - just for you. With the gift giving season on-hand, it's the perfect time to visit our beautiful jewellers and art galleries to find that special present for the one you love. We have also sourced the best food and wines available for the party season, so whether you are dining at home, in one of our many fine restaurants - or entertaining friends and family over the summer season, be sure to check out our wonderful recipes and local producers for inspiration and products. We wish all our loyal readers, and wonderfully supportive advertisers and contributors, family and friends - a splendid Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year.
Please enjoy!

ne of the finest actresses of her generation, Cate Blanchett has exhausted practically every film genre. Her repertoire includes serious dramas (Carol, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Talented Mr. Ripley), fantasy films (Cinderella, Lord of the Rings), and comedies (Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, for which she won an Oscar). But as her eldest son Dashiell pointed out to her, she's never appeared in a Hollywood superhero blockbuster… until, that is, her recent turn as Hela, a gothic goddess of death who manages to crush Thor's hammer with one hand, in the box office stomper Thor: Ragnarok.
“It's a new kind of film for me and I was very curious to be part of that world,” she begins.“For years, my son Dashiell has kept asking me, ‘When are you going to do a blockbuster?’. He's probably more knowledgeable about my career than I am,” she muses. Not that the luminous 48-year-old’s CV is lacking in epic movies, but there is arguably something a bit special about the current crop of superhero extravaganzas that audiences are being treated to, not to mention the specific honour of being the first female villain in the Marvel film universe. “There had been many female villains in the comic books but they were a little late in getting around to including one in the films,” says Blanchett with a knowing look. “I’m glad that’s been corrected!” Indeed, the actress has always been rather frank about her views on female equality, speaking out about the gender pay gap, and her suggestion we stop referring to women-led films as ‘female
projects’. She has also played more than her fair share of bloodyminded heroines who more than hold their own in the company of men, and yet Blanchett has always maintained she is not a fan of ‘agitprop theatre’ and is quick to clarify that when she chooses to take on a role it’s for her own fulfilment as an artist, over any real political agenda. So what inspires her to keep taking on such challenging and diverse parts? “I like the unknown factor when it comes to choosing a role or a project,” she offers.“I'll usually turn it down if I find the character too predictable or I feel like I've been there before. “That's why I agreed to play Bob Dylan (in Todd Haynes’s I'm Not There) or the part of Carol,” she explains. “Not only is there some risk involved but there's also this excitement that comes from exploring new territory, and I love to surprise myself.” Apart from making life miserable for Thor, the Melbourne-born Blanchett has also been indulging her angsty, indie film tastes in the recent Manifesto, an experimental art house film that appeared at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, and her comedic side in Ocean's 8, the all-female cinematic riff on the Ocean's 11 film which is set for release in 2018. continues next pages

I don't get involved in that other side of things and that's why I'm not part of social media and I try to stay as removed from the interest the public might have in my life.” Still, it’s hard to go entirely under the radar when you are one of the world’s most-celebrated actresses, and at 1.7m in height with her almost ethereal looks

Q&A
On social media “I think the recognition is important as long as you don't let yourself get too carried away by it.You need to keep your feet on the ground even though the attention can be flattering. No one is immune to praise but in this business it can be a tricky thing to handle. That's one of the reasons I hate Twitter and selfies. “Using social media in that way can be huge source of rivalry and jealousy amongst friends and when you're taking selfies it's a way of seeing how much people like you. Social media can be a great way to communicate and connect with other people, but I think selfies and Twitter are often used in an exhibitionist way which isn't healthy, particularly for younger people.”
On painting & art “I like collecting art now. But I still enjoy all the visual arts, painting, architecture. I think if I hadn't become an actress I would have tried to pursue a career as an artist or writer.”
On always offering a sense of style… “My mother and grandmother have been my inspirations in terms of their sense of selfrespect and independence. And that was reflected in how they dressed and that had a big impact on me. I remember whenever I've been to Italy for example I've noticed how well women dress in cities like Rome, for example. It seems that elegance and good taste run in their DNA.”

Abby Rose Another new face in Noosa Junction is Abby Rose, whose new boutique opened amidst a flurry of balloons and excited well- wishers. The Noosabased handmade bikini designer was thrilled with the amount of people who found her boutique in Arcadia Street just in time for the Summer holidays. Travelling Kimono Forget the 'Travelling Pants' the Travelling Kimono has taken up residence in The Pavilion in Noosa Junction. Opening night the boutique was filled to capacity with other new traders within the centre, and well-wishers all eager to welcome Janelle and Tara, and check out the fashion. Guests were treated to a table of temptations to enjoy with their Moscato or Bondi Espresso Martini jars.

olex is introducing a new model in its Cellini collection, the Cellini Moonphase, featuring an exclusive display of the lunar cycle. The 39 mm Cellini Moonphase is offered in 18 ct Everose gold. The Cellini Moonphase also displays the date around the circumference of the dial, via a centre hand with a crescent moon at its tip. A little known fact is that the

. . . e v o m y l e m i t A Story: Nicole Madigan
Growing up on opposite sides of the world, it was a mutual love affair with watches that brought Peter Petzold and Dr Lydia Dalle Nogare together, eventually leading to the creation of Noosa’s iconic time-piece boutique, Define Watches.
D
uring his early years near Frankfurt in Germany, Peter was introduced to the watch world at a young age by his father, an avid collector of time-pieces and board instruments. His first watch was an Omega from the 1960s, a gift from his father at age 9. Back in Newcastle, Australia, Lydia was also becoming enamoured with the watch and jewellery world, attending the Vicenza Oro
Fair held at her father’s Italian home town - as a young girl. Lydia received her first watch at 11, a small marquisate watch, given to her by her grandmother. After meeting by chance some 20 years ago while holidaying in

Asia, the pair quickly discovered their shared passion and before long, joined forces to become suppliers to some of the biggest the Swiss and German watch brands, mainly in the field of marketing, PR and product enhancement. “Moving from being a supplier to a dedicated watch importer and specialist was, in a way, a natural progression when we relocated from Germany to Australia 9 years ago,” says Lydia. The business began its life in Brisbane in 2009, before the couple packed up and moved to the Sunshine Coast, along with their four sons and much-loved dog Amy. “Brisbane was a good hub for national and international travellers and it made sense during the start-up years to be in a capital city along the east coast.” While the Brisbane base served its purpose, relocating to Noosa was always part of their long term business plan.
“Noosa is the perfect location for Define Watches, offering the ideal mix of business innovation, boutique retail/ser vice and luxur y lifestyle – presented in a relaxed, informal environment. “In terms of lifestyle, we come into our shop on Quamby Place and look out at the gorgeous ocean inlet each day with the wonderful smell of the local restaurants wafting our way – not bad for a day at the office.” For the family though, the decision was made to build their life a little further out, choosing Doonan as the location to create their dream

Specialising in only the finest handcrafted jewellery & clothing home. “We both love the buzz of a city but also appreciate the tranquillity of living in less urban areas,” says Lydia. “The Sunshine Coast has it all and Doonan is perfectly situated to allow us to make the most of the coast and the hinterland.” Engaging a local builder and tradespeople, the couple set about creating an environmentally friendly, German inspired home. “We like the idea of living off-grid as much as possible and have incorporated solar power, water tanks and other thermal materials to optimise efficiencies and reduce our footprint on the environment. “We tried to build a home that would be simple to upkeep and retain its appeal over time. “Simple lines, functional efficiency and minimalism guided the design – very German in that sense.” The couple’s four sons have also taken an interest in the family passion, often coming into the store to participate.
“Even our gorgeous dog Amy joins us each day at the office.” With Peter a true watch aficionado, and Lydia’s background in business development, the pair have successfully created a life of balance and shared passions - both at home and at work. “Our passion and knowledge come together in perfect synergy to form the backbone of our business,” says Lydia. “Everyone’s business goal is to be successful but what really drives us is the opportunity to work closely with highly skilled watchmakers to bring something truly unique to Australian watch lovers. “Our goal is to offer something unique.”

A few fabulous tips for your summer skincare…
Y
our skin is a highly complex functioning organ that reflects your total health and wellbeing. One of functions of your skin is to regulate heat via body temperature, adjusting blood flow and sweat production accordingly so as to maintain the body’s optimal temperature (around 37 degrees Celsius). So if clear skin and a glowing complexion is something that you desire, you can imagine how important it is to support the natural function of your skin before and after your workout, so that your body can eliminate sweat easily and be hydrated and nourished with plant extracts that are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids. How do you do this? 1: Choose natural plant based products, like AEOS, that encourage the skin to absorb the nutrient-dense plant oils within each product, whilst allowing the skin to excrete the urea, uric acid, ammonia and lactic acid in the form of sweat when you workout. 2: Effective daily cleansing with natural and organic products help to dissolve everyday dirt, grime, makeup and excess sebum (oil), whilst also helping to unblock clogged pores. 3: Weekly exfoliation with natural and organic products that are gentle on the skin. Extreme exfoliation methods expose under layers of immature cells, which have not completed their growth and journey to the outer layer. Due to these layers not being fully mature they are therefore far more vulnerable to damage from external pollutants and the sun, one of the major factors in ageing and dry skin. Extreme exfoliation can lead to redness and irritation of the skin. This is why the AEOS exfoliant is mild, offering the possibility to gently ‘polish’

Some skincare products can do more harm than good, by disrupting the delicate moisture and pH balance of your skin, resulting in redness, irritation, dehydration and premature ageing of the skin. The shores of Noosa’s Main Beach are jam-packed each year as visitors from far and wide come to witness the hydro-hounds and their surfing antics, and the phenomenally popular, much-loved event is watched all around the world by hundreds of
thousands of online viewers. The spectacular festival venue of Noosa’s First Point has been a bedrock of global longboarding for more than 50 years, and the festival upholds that reputation, as the largest surfing event in the world by competitor numbers, with the over 900 entrants spanning some 70 years of age and representing almost 20 nations and regions worldwide. 2018 will see a return of focus to what has always been the festival’s primary inspiration: that simple love of longboarding. The Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing takes place March 10-17 2018, with a wealth of action in the water all day, every day, and entertainment under the stunning Laguna Bay sunsets each and every evening. tarting out as a passionate 15 year old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, it wasn’t until Adrienne Luxton, the Owner and Designer behind Ajie, moved to Noosa in 2004, that the self-taught designers' dream of starting a jewellery label became a reality. With Adrienne’s designs being featured throughout publications such as Cleo, Cosmopolitan and Who magazines, as well as on the runway at the first Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival in 2008. For Adrienne, moving towards ethical sourcing of components, and creating pieces that will last the test of time, is a major drive and point of difference for her jewellery and homewares label. Ajie jewels are stunning and uniquely distinct in their design. Each piece has been individually handcrafted by Adrienne with these things in mind. The textural components used in her designs range from mixed metals, crystal, shells and earthstones, to fabrics, timber and resin - and are ethically sourced from around the globe. The jewels and homewares are designed to make a statement, with the focus on slow, high quality designs that feature oversized cocktail rings and earrings, neckpieces and wrist wear. After taking a large break to focus on family, it’s exciting to have Adrienne’s designs back on the radar and looking even better than ever. www.ajie.com.au

NS Sweat for your skin… We know that sweating is our body’s way of keeping cool but turns out there are other health benefits that sweating brings. "Exercise increases the level of endorphins (feel-good) hormones released in our body," says Samantha. “Whereas, the 'stress hormone’, cortisol, contributes to the breakdown of collagen in our skin, so when endorphins are released in our body and cortisol levels are lowered, we are helping to reduce the appearance of premature ageing and Samantha suggests using AEOS’ gentle cleansing lotion (pink), post work-out to ensure clean and hydrated skin. CULTURE SHOCK!
From one extreme to the other... Story: Nicole Madigan
Growing up surrounded by jewellers and jewellery, there was every chance Peter Priest was going to make his mark in the industry... despite an early lack of interest. 28

from Noosa to the Congo...
I
''I’ve always been around jewellery, as (my parents), Charles and Ingrid bought into the family business before I was born, so I literally grew up at the jewellery shop in Gunnedah,” says Mr Priest. The business has been running for over 70 years, and the family decided to relocate from the small rural town to the Sunshine Coast, before the words 'Sea Change' had become part of our modern vocabulary. Since then, Noosa Village Jewellers has become somewhat of an Noosa icon, having been based in the beach-side city now for over 22 years. Still, a young Peter Priest was yet to develop an interest in jewellery and did his own thing for more than ten years following the end of secondary school. The turning point came in 2015, when Mr Priest was on a trip to Queenstown. “I met expat South African, Craig Miller who established the Passion8 Diamond Brand and thus began my fascination and passion for diamonds,” he says. “I really never saw myself coming back into the family business. Of course I always had a view to keeping it going, considering it was established by my Grandfather, Alexander Priest in 1946 on his return from Changi Prison after WW2.
“It hit home when I began to appreciate the supply chain of the precious gems, particularly diamonds, finally I saw a way that I could combine my humanitarian work with the family business, which was basically me coming full circle.” Peter’s first brush with the Congo was in 2008 at the World Peace Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he met Aloise Makoule Goma, an African man from the Republic of Congo. “The Republic of Congo is a wholly separate country from the Democratic
Republic of Congo, separated only by the great Congo River, the most powerful river in the world. “Aloise and I were both speakers for our respective countries at the Congress." “I met Aloise because he had his bag stolen at the airport, spoke little English, and thus was left without his passport and other essentials; little did I know that on taking him under my wing - this would begin a direction which would shape the rest of my life.” As fate would have it, a close friend of Peter reached out to him, six months before she passed away - another moment in time that would change the course of his life. continues next pages...
Far from the Congo... enjoying time with fiance Kristy on the Noosa River
NS continued from previous page “The last thing she did for me was offer me a gift in the form of an introduction to my colleague Randy, who served in the White House in both the Bush and Obama administrations. “Randy had Presidential contacts in the Congo, who were looking to foster Western business, so in March this year, I took my first trip to the mighty Congo. “I met all the VIP's and was treated with great respect by the country. “I think the business highlight so far - has been signing an exclusive option, which has been signed off by the Ministry of Justice for 800 square kilometres of pristine mining land in the Sankuru region of DRC.” But while there are indeed financial and business gains to be made through diamond mining, Peter’s motivation lies within his humanitarian work. “Sure money is important, but if it was just about the diamonds and the mining I wouldn't be in Congo, there are far easier and safer ways to make money. “The loss I have experienced in my life has really created an indelible sense of human value, particularly for children, given their innocence. “In looking at the diamond supply chain, the Kimberly Process which has done much to ensure that diamonds are conflict free, has done nothing to address the slave labor conditions experienced by the Congolese people. “They may be on $1 USD a day for digging in the hot sun for what could amount to a million dollar haul. For me this inequity is unacceptable.” Peter says a certified supply chain must be established in the Congo, protected by state-of-the-art, block-chain technology for
transparency - to ensure miners and their families earn a fair and equitable minimum wage. “By cutting the fat out of the supply chain of middle parties that neither produce or cut the diamond, we are able to redistribute this wealth back towards the people who really have earned it.” So far, Peter has been on three trips to the Congo totalling four months of work, and holds a 12 month Business Visa and a residency. He’s also been invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Congo to become an Honorary Consul between DRC and Australia. Next year, he hopes to bring several Kimberly Certified 10 carat stones back via Dubai to have cut in Australia.
“This would be a real testament to our success as a family jeweller in the international market.” “This would be a real testament to our success as a family jeweller in the international market.” While Peter grew up in Noosa, his return to the city he loves after his visit to the Congo was shell-shocking. “It was very difficult when I first arrived back in Noosa, coming from such hardship to such a paradise really rocked me. “When I return now, I'm used to it, but it’s given me a far greater appreciation for Noosa - and especially of all things real coffee, which is impossible to find in the Congo. “ I wish everyone could experience what I've seen - as the blessing is, that with the small problems we have in Australia, I can always keep in perspective the hardships of Central Africa. “Life has become easier and more manageable here as a result of this new insight.” When he is at home, Peter can most often be found at home on his computer or phone. “But in my spare time I really just enjoy a cold craft beer and spending time with my fiancee Kristy Elle chatting with friends over a coffee in the relaxed cosmopolitan atmosphere of Hastings Street. “I still come into our jewellers three days a week, to make sure I'm still able to contribute and stay abreast of what’s happening. Otherwise you'll find me climbing Cooroora (Mr Pomona), or walking my slightly 'flighty' labrador Barley along the Noosa River. Life is always perfect in Noosa.”
Peter Priest has also been invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Congo to become an Honorary Consul between DRC and Australia.

FASHION When Natalie Hanley approached her mum to help her launch a fashion boutique back in 1997, Lorelei Bedford only ever intended to assist in the setup. Her true love, after all, was ceramics...
B
ut 20 years, three boutiques and an online store later, the mother/daughter duo at the helm of high-fashion label Zambezee are still going strong. The pair’s interest in fashion goes back to Ms Haney’s childhood when she would pour over magazine fashion pages, in awe of the design and glamour coming off the international runways. “Mum always had an amazing sense of style and a keen eye and was a very accomplished ceramic artist, so I was lucky to be surrounded by inspiration. “Mum was always more interested in fabrics and the techniques of dressmaking rather than fashion which has really helped shape what Zambezee is today as we have a huge focus on simplicity and quality.” Ms Hanley’s entry into the fashion industry was at Robyn’s fashion boutique in Mooloolaba, where her enthusiasm for the industry was most welcome. It was when one of Robyn’s three stores went onto the market that Zambezee was born. “When one of the locations went on the market right as I was finishing high school I convinced mum to become my business partner in what is now Zambezee today 20 years later. “She only ever intended to help me get the business started and then get back to her first love, ceramics, but the business grew rapidly and offered more to her both mentally and artistically then she expected and of course the chance to keep working together which we loved.”
“One of the most exciting changes to the business has been launching the online business five years ago which has made Zambezee available worldwide, and to our international clients long after their holiday finished on the Sunshine Coast.” For Ms Hanley, running a high fashion operation is a dream come true, but it’s about more than simply fashion. “It has been an amazing gift really, we have got to spend 20 years together working side by side and embracing opportunities like travel that have taken us to the fashion capitals of the world,” says Ms Hanley. “And the quality time raising my three boys and taking them along on this journey just would not have happened had we not embarked on this adventure together. “We have really walked the path together through growing the business, but as the business has grown our roles have separated by necessity somewhat. “However to this day we still do all the buying and travelling together, which is still one of our favourite things.” And of course, there’s the joy of working in one of Australia’s most iconic cities.
Bella Lido 'Molly' Dress now available at Tangerine Beach Noosa Marina
Ms Hanley says both mother and daughter are passionate about the way fashion can impact how someone feels. “I love nothing more than seeing someone walk out of one of our Boutiques walking taller and smiling broader than when they walked in because they have found a look that enhances them and the way they feel.” Upon the launch of the business, the goal was simply to provide fashion that complimented the local lifestyle, but could also be taken globally. “Having our first boutique together was a monumental moment and one which we never really looked beyond at first,” says Ms Hanley. “We certainly could never have imagined growing the business to what is now, with 3 Boutiques and our online business, when we were back in our little Mooloolaba beachside boutique in 1997.” While the Mooloolaba boutique still exists, the pair have since opened two boutiques in Noosa. “The Sunshine Coast has such an eclectic mix of both locals and tourists which keeps business moving all year round. “The Boutiques have prime locations in amongst everything that is happening with stunning outlooks to the Sunshine Coast lifestyle.

zambezee “Noosa is a rare gem as it has become an absolute icon yet has kept its natural beauty and is such a unique, lovely place to visit or live. “It is never lost on me how beautiful Main beach or Hasting St is on sunset when all the lights come on and you hear the local music coming from restaurants and cafes and the sound of people laughing and enjoying life fills the street.
“The Sunshine Coast definitely embraces cooler fabrics and a more relaxed approach but still favours, without a doubt, a very stylish look.”

n w o s ’ a s o o N ady... Classy L The life of leisure and lattes awaited Lorraine Kenway when she retired to Noosa 21 years ago, but a tranquil lifestyle wasn’t for this powerhouse. Within six months she was bored and looking for a new direction. So, to fulfill a lifelong dream and create the challenge she desired she opened her first boutique, ‘Noosa’s Classy Lady’ on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville.

his summer Lorraine celebrates 21 years in the retail business and in that time she has done anything but rest on her laurels. Over the last two decades, ‘Noosa’s Classy Lady’ has gone from strength to strength and a second shop,‘Classy Lady on Gibson’ opened in 2015. The latest boutique specialises in swim and resort wear as well as homewares, furniture, and gifts. Both stores are open seven days a week and when Lorraine isn’t onsite serving her loyal customers she is out, buying international and local labels to keep the offer current. As if that wasn’t enough to keep anyone busy, Lorraine also works tirelessly on her charity ‘Santa’s Classy Helpers’. Her year-round

fundraising efforts spend each month sourcing supplies, clothing, and gifts and then at Christmas, care packages are distributed to 300 local struggling families. This continued charity work and commitment to the Noosa community, combined with her dynamic personality have cemented Lorraine Kenway the title of Noosa’s own ‘Classy Lady’. We asked Loraine to give Noosa Style the insider tips on swim and resort fashions for the summer and find out, who is the classy lady customer? ‘Our customers are a 50/50 split between locals and tourists and they are very loyal. Our local ladies come in often for a chat and a browse, to see what new pieces I have in. I change the stock on a regular basis to keep the store fresh and exciting. I have a regular tourist trade as well, with many of my ladies coming in every time they come to Noosa for a holiday. I even have clients from Melbourne and Sydney that phone in an order before they arrive and then collect their shopping before they check in!’ ‘This summer one of our biggest selling collections are from European swim and resort label, SUNFLAIR®. The collections cater for our customers who tend to be in the 30 plus age bracket, that want a good fit but to still look stylish and fashionable. SUNFLAIR® has a great range of sizes, styles, and shapes to suit every woman, at every time in her life. As well as swimwear there are mix and match dresses, kaftans and skirts, great easy to pack cruise wear pieces. One of the most popular designs are the multi-style skirts which can be worn long or short, as a dress or even a wrap. A great versatile piece especially when you have to pack light. The big trends to look out for this summer are vibrant and exotic prints, with tropical or tribal influences,’ said Lorraine. So, if you get the chance, pop in a say hello to Lorraine and her team and support a local, independent business. Plus you can shop for complete and stunning outfits that will take you from Noosa main beach to sipping cocktails on Hastings street. arly school pickup, hockey practice, dance lessons and the upcoming Christmas school holidays…kids have a lot of places to be. For working single parent Simon Bishop, racing around trying to get his nine-year-old daughter to each place made it impossible to be everywhere at once. So, he developed an app to improve the lives of parents who were similarly overwhelmed, offering parents and their trusted network of family and friends the ability to arrange pickups, drop offs and temporary care of their children through one streamlined social platform called The Hug App. Available nationally and free to download and use, The Hug App is a secure, private online community that connects parents, family members and friends in need of transport or care for their little ones. Whether its team sports, a school concert or after school pickup, the app allows users to group family and friends into any group, or event type their child is involved in, before submitting a request. The service is a complete end-to-end platform and once a parent signs up, they need only set up their profile and their child’s profile with basic information like their home and school locations. Being the first of its kind in Australia, The Hug App puts an end to the worry of whether a parent’s child has been collected safely, with geo-location abilities enabling users to share and see where their children are at any time, and multi-

layered security ensuring parents are only able to connect with their network of trusted contacts. With instant response and notification technologies on Android and iOS mobile operating systems, users can also communicate and support other families and friends by offering assistance. “As a single working parent, I share custody of my nine-yearold daughter - and found it increasingly difficult to manage the daily responsibilities of transport and care for her,” said Founder of The Hug App, Simon Bishop. “I always felt guilty for asking the same people and like most parents, would rely on the same friends and family members to help out when they could. I got fed up with the unnecessary pressure I put on them, and after searching the globe for an app that could solve my requirements, I designed one myself.” Providing an intuitive and user-friendly experience, The Hug App allows users to show their appreciation through a collection of animated ‘Bailey Bears’, named after Simon’s daughter. “The Hug App is a technology platform that solves all the issues parents face around family management, by providing forward planning that is safe, easy to use, and allows you to expand your network of carers. There is no greater peace of mind than knowing your child is in safe hands with people you know and trust,” said Simon. For more information go to www.thehugapp.com.au. An audio-visual introduction to the App can be found here, as well as a video on the safety, trust and security of the App.

ith its towering Norfolk Pines nestled along the shoreline park, and the many wonders of nature in the surrounding National Parks and pristine beach, that form the world-recognised Noosa Biosphere, it is now wonder that Peregian Beach is so popular. Just over the sandhills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of Wallum Heath, which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in Spring. On the western side is Lake Weyba National Park and Lake Weyba which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. The area is rich with native wildlife and flora. Its friendly village atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle, makes Peregian Beach a favourite destination for savvy locals and clever tourists, who are seeking a quiet shopping experience away from the bustle of Noosa Heads. Peregian Beach offers visitors an excellent selection of casual and trendy restaurants, bars, cafĂŠs and take-aways dotted all around the central, village square - all inter-connected by quaint lanes and pathways. Visitors are free to choose the perfect spot for a coffee, luncheon or dinner. And, those wanting a picnic or fish'n'chips in the park are well catered for as well. Tables and seating are dotted around the area to make it easy to take a little break, when seeking out the bargains on offer at the surrounding boutiques. A market day is held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, when live music attracts large crowds to the to the lawn infront of the Peregian Beach Surf Club. It's definitely a family-friendly little beachside town.

hef/owner Frank Boulay of Periwinkle Restaurant in Peregian Beach, seduces diners with a taste of authentic, French bistrostyle cooking using fresh, locally grown produce, supplemented by the very best ingredients available. With a leaning towards delicious fresh seafood, hand-crafted sourdough breads, char-grilled beef and local seasonal vegetables, as well as poultry and vegetarian options, the menu offers a tantalising taste of France without the price of a plane ticket. We were excited by the menu which offered such delights as Alsacian Specialty (a French pizza); Assiette de Charcuterie with duck rillette, parma ham, finnocchiona, cacciatorini, cornichon and grilled sourdough; Plump Scallops that were sweet and succulent; Steak Fritte a char-grilled Cape Grim sirloin steak, caramelised ĂŠchallote, pomme frittes with truffle oil and parmesan, green salad and bordelaise sauce; and finish off with a traditional Crepes Suzette. The casual but classy inside/outside dining options and comprehensive wine list, fit well with the beachy seaside village feel of Peregian Beach. The perfect spot for a relaxing breakfast, leisurely luncheon or romantic dinner.

LAND AND SEA NOOSA BEER COMPANY If you've been checking out the new building in the street behind Bunnings in Noosaville, you'll no doubt know by now that Noosa is
getting its very own boutique brewery. Well good news - it's just about ready to explode onto the marketplace for Summer. The region's latest boutique brewery will be opening hopefully in time for Christmas or at least the summer holiday season, with their 150 litre pilot plant. They'll be serving Coastie Common Lager that has been fermented warmer to bring out the best of the Lager and Ale styles. Full of fruity flavours with a crisp clean finish. The boys say it is their take on the Californian style originated in the mid 19th century when German brewers immigrated to the West Coast. And, now the perfect brew for Noosa.=
PARADISE ARCADE I am hearing nothing but great things about new Mexican restaurant, Paradise Arcade. Sydney boys Dylan and Colin have made their 'sea change' to our sunny shores to fill the gap they saw in our restaurant scene. Great Californian-style Mexican food - with their wall decorated with a huge wall art of Frida Kahlo, pineapples, copper piping and neon signs - the feel is 'too cool for school'. Love it. BEEF TACOS SIRLOIN ORANGE TACOS
e p i c e R Serves: 6 Ingredients: • ground pepper and salt, to taste • 3 oranges, zest • 2 spring onions (scallions), chopped • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 800 g (1lb 10oz) sirloin steak • 4 corn tortillas To serve: • 1/2 white onion, chopped • 50 g (2 oz) coriander (cilantro), chopped • add Salsa Verde or Salsa Roja (see sauces)
TACOS authentic mexican tacos the Playa Takeria way. By: Ricardo Amare del Castillo Published by: New Holland RRP $39.99 Enjoy tacos the authentic way; full of the freshest ingredients and bursting with the taste of South America. All the recipes are sourced from the heart of Mexico and show readers how to create the fillings, sauces, and tortillas, which make store-bought tacos look dull and tasteless by comparison. Perfect for summer evenings with friends.
Method: In a bowl mix together the pepper, salt, orange zest, spring onions and olive oil. Mix thoroughly and set aside for 30 minutes. On a hot grill, roast the sirloin until it is cooked to your liking. Cook the sirloin on a hot grill or in a frypan. Brown on both sides and cook to your preference but we recommend medium rare. Remove the sirloin from the grill, pour over with orange zest mix and rest for 10 minutes Cut the sirloin into thick strips and serve over hot tortillas with onions, coriander and your favorite sauce. Heat tortillas in the oven for 1–2 minutes. Alternatively, heat a frypan and add the tortillas, one at a time. Cook for 1–2 minutes each side. Keep warm while you heat the rest of the tortillas. Serve the steak on the tortillas with selected sauce/s.

The drive to Mary Valley and Kandanga from Noosa is about 40 minutes, a beautifully scenic trip on some of the best roads in the State. It is the perfect destination for wonderful weekend drive or midweek sojourn into the countryside. And, of course you'll be subject to some of the best food you'll ever have the privilege to taste. NS m… a e t s e th n o g n Bri Electrolux invited a very happy media contingent to join them at The Cooking School Noosa, at Quamby Place, Noosa Sound - to test out their sensational Steam Ovens and experience 'the ultimate steam cooking masterclass'.
And, what a cooking adventure it was.
W
e met in the foyer of The Sebel Noosa, where we would be staying the night, and then ventured down to the dock and stepped aboard the water taxi on a beautiful Spring morning to traverse the river to the school. From the moment we arrived we were treated to an experience that would be remembered long after the event. To ensure that everything ran smoothly, they brought in the 'big guns' in the form of Electrolux Chef Ambassador and Executive chef for the Stokehouse Group (Brisbane & Melbourne), Richard Ousby, to take this band of eager novices through the basics (and not so basics) of preparing a restaurant quality luncheon - for ourselves. Meaning we had to do all the work under expert supervision, using just a recipe book. Hang on a minute! Now I understand the saying "there's no such thing as a free lunch". The class was larger than usual for the school, and owner Danielle Gjestland was on-hand to see that everything ran smoothly, and we could find all the right utensils, cooking implements and local produce along the way. We worked at a frenetic pace, probably because we were slower than actual chefs, and taking instructions from Richard, who was doing his best impression of a 'bee' buzzing from student to student to offer advice and assistance. We were broken into small groups and given our tasks and recipes to follow from peeling and coring pineapples to slicing fresh Swordfish…making dressings and rum caramel - to smoked mussel ragu and fresh crab tarts. But, along the way we learned, prepared, and accomplished the seemingly impossible; a fabulous array of dishes to satiate the eighteen, by now, hungry workers. When the cooking was done, we were allowed to leave the washing up to the wonderful staff of The Cooking School, (that's a plus), as we ventured over the Wasabi Restaurant & Bar to indulge in our day's creations. Our perfectly prepared (if I do say so myself ) 3-course meal was plated for us by Wasabi's staff - so it was presented to us looking just as if it had been prepared by professionals which by now we thought we probably were. Each course was matched be fine
wines chosen by the restaurant's sommelier. As our adventure came to a close - and the sun began to set on the horizon, we decided it was about time to leave our great escapade away from real life and return to our beds…dinner was definitely not on the menu, as we were all too full and too tired. The life of a chef is definitely not an easy one. On the serious points, The Electrolux Steam Oven incorporates the very best in technology, including their unique Intuitive Oven Interface, smart food temperature probe and the enhanced Full Taste steam oven setting. This ensures that the succulent flavours are locked in, by utilising just the right amount of steam, moisture and heat. Personally I was more excited about the pyrolytic cleaning! NS s... e o g n ma More r... e m m Su e r o m The taste of summer is here... Calypso Mango season is now in full swing.
T
hese deliciously fragrant mangoes are at their peak from October through to the end of January. Calypso Mangoes are the 'daughter' of Kensington Pride and Sensation mangoes, combining the best parts of both varieties. Boasting more flesh than other varieties thanks to their smaller seed, their flesh is firmer and fibrefree, they have a more mild, sweet taste. Known for their gorgeous blush skin colour, and also have a naturally longer shelf life than other varieties. Nutritionist and co-founder of Health Synergy Jennifer Murrant says not only are Calypso Mangoes delicious, they also pack a serious health punch. “Just one cup of chopped mango contains 100% of your daily vitamin C needs. They also contain carotenes, which boost eye, skin and lung health, and are a source of potassium and fibre,” said Ms Murrant.
PRAWN, CALYPSO MANGO & QUKES SALAD WITH CHILLI COCONUT

They also contain antioxidants and flavonoids, which are antiinflammatory and immunity boosting compounds. Why not try these little tips: • Sweeten your smoothie: Add a cup of chopped mango into your favourite smoothie to add a sweet summer flavour. • Ice block fun: Turn your mangoes into ice blocks for a healthy and refreshing treat. Simply blend mango and banana with coconut milk or coconut water, transfer the mixture into a popsicle mould, freeze and enjoy on a scorching summers day. • Mix it up: Add mango into your favourite recipes to give them a tropical twist this summer. Think salads, salsas, barbequed dishes and Acai bowls. • Slice to impress: Serving mangoes as a table or fruit platter centrepiece is a sure-fire way to impress a crowd this silly season. Get creative with your cutting techniques and slice your mango into a beautiful edible flower, or stick to the classics with the simple slice and dice technique.

“The 100 Chefs” 2018... It is not an extra classification! It is the only worldwide classification of the chefs by the chefs!
A
rising from a vote made by the starred chefs of the entire world who have chosen among their peers those who best represent the values of their profession, the french chef MICHEL TROISGROS (Maison Troisgros – Roanne) reaches the first place in the classification, thus succeeding to the French chefs Alain Passard (2017), Michel Bras (2016) and Pierre Gagnaire (2015). Announced on Sunday November 26th at 6.30 pm at the Chefs World Summit 2017 in Monaco. Launched in 2015 by the French professional magazine Le Chef, “The 100 Chefs” is the international version of one of the titles which is the most recognized by the profession and the media : “Le Chef de l’Année” which gathers the votes of the chefs appearing in the Michelin Guide France. Between end of August and November, the 582 2* and 3* chefs of the Michelin Guide of the whole world were asked to answer, freely and anonymously, this question : Who are, according to you, the 5 international chefs who : • best hold high the values of the Chef Michel TROISGROS profession • create a great cooking • and in the restaurants of whom it is a must to have been. In a period when a prize, a trophy or a classification of chefs comes out every month, the classification “Les 100 Chefs” stands out from the others thanks to this distinctive characteristic which gives it all its meaning : it is the only worldwide classification established objectively by the chefs themselves. Thus, after 4 classifications, “the 100 Chefs” has become a professional reflection of the gastronomic dynamism of the different countries thanks to the presence of their chefs in this classification. A wonderful place for announcing the 2018 classification : the 2nd Chefs World Summit in Monaco. International meeting of the Chefs, the Chefs World Summit has invited Le Chef magazine to reveal the classification “Les 100 Chefs” during the opening evening on Sunday November 26th at 6pm. 2016 Turkey Flat Grenache to be precise, which was recently named Best Young Red Wine in Australia at the prestigious Melbourne Wine Show. It is also the first time a Barossa Valley wine has won since 2003. Turkey Flat winemaker, Mark Bulman said the suitability of Grenache in the warm Barossa climate, and the savoury, complex and tannic characters in the resulting wine were what attracted him to the area, and he is extremely excited to have won the award. "The hot, dry conditions of the 2016 vintage, combined with the timely 30mm of rainfall in January, and our extraordinary old vine material, set us up in the winery to create something truly exceptional" he explained. The Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy is the most prestigious and sought-after wine award in Australia. It's also the perfect destination for a romantic weekend getaway at a quiet B & B, or to visit a winery or boutique brewery for a taste of something special, before venturing onto one of the tantalising restaurants or coffee shops that can be located all over the mountain. There's a particularly fabulous bookshop in Maleny that will have anyone who loves books like me, excited by boundless choice.
T
he area is a photographers paradise, as every turn boasts glorious views out over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, large expanses of lush farmland and glimpses of cattle and goats grazing there happily. With parks and gardens always in bloom, as well as a lake, national park, waterfalls, and lily ponds with friendly ducks and geese waiting to be fed. Day-trippers and visitors to the area are provided with a wealth of unique and historical homes and buildings, from old Queenslanders to cute cottages, and sprawling homes - there's enough to satisfy any architecture buff or history lover. Montville and Maleny are well-known for their back-to-nature culture and fine restaurants, cafés and artisan communities, the whole region is an extremely popular destination for those wishing to get up to the mountains for some super-fresh air and get-back-to-nature adventures. The perfect spot for an idyllic picnic or mountain-top wedding.
Maleny & Montville A COUNTRY EXPERIENCE
The region is full of design studios, artisan galleries, potteries and quaint shops, full of wonderful treasures that will always delight and sometimes mystify. It's the perfect place to come in search of that perfect present for a special person or occasion - or a treasured art piece for your home.
It's the perfect place to enjoy a devonshire tea on a pleasant afternoon, before venturing to your B&B, or luxury accommodation with all every convenience you could possibly want on a perfect getaway.
With the Blackall Range's close proximity (it's just an hour's drive from the heart of Noosa and one and a half hour's drive from Brisbane), it's no wonder that it is the perfect getaway destination for those wishing to take a break from their hectic work schedules, or simply escape the everyday! And, did I mention it is a favourite destination for those wanting a wedding 'with a view'. www.hinterlandtourism.com.au

NS Time to Hop … up to Maleny
B
EER… the dictionary refers to beer as simply an alcoholic drink made from yeastfermented malt flavoured with hops.
It is the drink that has been around since the dawn of civilisation - a drink that was consumed before tea and coffee had ever been considered… So it is probably no wonder that the Sunshine Coast now has its fair share of boutique breweries popping up. The Maleny region however, seems to be dominating the Sunshine Coast's race to have the most boutique breweries in Australia! And, their perfect positioning on the Blackall Range high above the hot coastline, seems to have created a local love affair with hops and yeast. Local lads - beer whiz-kid, Matt Jancauskas and Toby Stodart at Brouhaha Brewery are making quite a name for themselves with beer drinking connoisseurs. You'll easily find the brewery just a couple of street turns from the main street of
Maleny. This modern facility has a large and airy restaurant attached to the bright and shiny brewing tanks area, so you can enjoy your meal while contemplating the taste of the contents. I'm guessing this makes Brouhaha a 'gastropub' by today's definitions. Its trendy, hip and a great meeting place for gettogethers with friends and families. With its industrial inspired fit out, and timber accents everywhere, as well as a huge balcony area with hinterland views - it's fast becoming an 'inspired' wedding venue for those looking for something a little different to the standard high-end hotel venues. They're big on flavour and freshness, and they're keeping it local as much as possible, with their 10-tap menu. A few of the more avant garde flavours include the Raspberry Saison, Strawberry and Rhubarb Sour, and Mango Passionfruit Wheat Ale, which all marry well with the popular share-plate dining, that Head chef James
Ostridge creates with flair. The menu boasts locally-sourced produce and James has fostered great relationships with the local suppliers to showcase what's in season and at its best to their diners. I suggest you check out the Tasting Paddle of four signature brews to get a good feel for what the boys are all about.

hether it is relaxed al fresco dining on the terrace, an intimate table on the verandah or dine within the restaurant, Flaxton Gardens can ensure quality throughout. With such a wealth of wonderful produce right here on the Sunshine Coast, one can be assured that everything on the menu is always freshly prepared by their experienced and well-trained chefs. Alan’s approach – Honesty on a plate – demonstrates a sophisticated,
yet honest style of cooking that comes from the heart. A true example of using local seasonal produce is the exciting new dessert, Camel Milk & Vanilla Bean Panacotta with Rhubarb. Flaxton Gardens recently partnered with local Sunshine Coast Camel Milk dairy, QCamel, to bring their customers this new dessert with a difference. The sweetness of the Camel Milk balances well with the tartness of the Rhubarb.

s e n i w e t i r u Your favo ars.... are in the st Y
our favourite wine is written in the stars! According to the inaugural In Vino Stats Veritas – Cellarmasters Wine Lovers Report from Cellarmasters, sales data shows there are differences between star signs and wine preferences. For instance, the report shows the spontaneous Aries drinks more Champagne than any other star sign, while sensitive Cancer opts for delicate Pinot Noir and earthy Taurus enjoys a bold Barossa Shiraz. Here, is the full breakdown, so you can see if you're Star Sign is representing your drinking habits correctly.
Aries (March 21-April 19) Aries are full of spontaneity; they are known to be impulsive, direct and courageous, as well as daring and energetic. So it may not be that surprising that they drink more Champagne than any other star sign – every day is a celebration if you’re an Aries! When it comes to red wine, they prefer a fruity Cabernet from the Barossa Valley, while white wine drinking Aries opt for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough.
Taurus(April 20-May 20)
Libras are known for looking out for everyone’s needs above their own, and are known to be kind, gentle, peaceful and full of love. So perhaps it is this loving nature that makes them love blends! Red wine drinking Libras love a Cab Sauv, and they drink more of the varietal than any other star sign. When it comes to white wine, Libras enjoy a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc from South Australia, or a sparkling Australian wine.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Scorpios are known for being intense. They are strong willed, driven, ambitious and dedicated. When it comes to red wine, Scorpios prefer a big, bold Shiraz from Barossa Valley. They are also big fans of Rosé wine, and enjoy the fruity Rosé from South Australia rather than the crisp, French Rosé. As far as white wine is concerned, they like to enjoy a chilled glass of big flavoured Margaret River Chardonnay. Scorpios are big fan of bubbles – they drink more sparkling wine than any other star sign, and prefer their bubbles from South Australia or Tasmania.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
Sagittarians are free spirits, and full of optimism and courage. They are also known to be impatient and reckless. After Cancer, they are the star sign that enjoys Pinot Noir the most – and their favourite one comes from Marlborough. When it comes to white wine, they enjoy a South Australian Pinot Gris or Chardonnay.
Geminis are known to be quick-witted and expressive with two different personalities. One side of a Gemini is fun and sociable and the other side is suddenly serious and restless. Perhaps it the restless side that make Geminis favour imported red wines more than any other star sign, and they have a particularly soft spot for Sangiovese from Italy. White wine-loving Geminis will grab a glass of bold South Australian Chardonnay or a crisp Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Arguably the most determined sign, Capricorns are ambitious, practical and always willing to help. They are secure in their own place, and are known to be sensible and full of wisdom. Perhaps it is their self-confidence that makes them stand out in the stats – they are the biggest white wine drinkers of the zodiac, and their favourite white tipple is Chardonnay – in fact, they drink more of the varietal than any other star sign. In other words, they know what they like. If they are drinking red wine, a South Australian Shiraz is their top choice, followed by a fruity Merlot from the same region. This star sign will happily sip on a fruity Rosé from McLaren Vale as well.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Cancer is one of the more emotional signs, and Cancerians are known for being very sensitive and sympathetic towards other people. Perhaps it is that sensitivity that makes Cancerians love Pinot Noir, a complex, light bodied red wine. When it comes to white wine, they are one of the biggest Riesling drinkers, and they are huge fans of a crisp, dry and complex Riesling from South Australia’s Eden Valley.
Leo(July 23-August 22)
Leos are born for the spotlight. They are action-orientated and have a need to be loved and admired by all. So perhaps it’s not that surprising that they like it bold and unique when it comes to red, Leos drink fruity McLaren Vale Merlots – the region is known for producing Australia’s best Merlot. When it comes to white wine, Leos like it crisp yet fruity. Leos drink more Riesling than any other star sign. They also enjoy Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris from the Marlborough region.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
Unlike other star signs, Virgos dislike being the centre of attention. They are also kind, hardworking and are known to think analytically. NoosaStyleLiving
Libra (September 23-October 22)
Tauruses are known to be reliable, generous and practical, although they can also be self-indulgent, lazy and stubborn. Taurus is an earth sign, so it makes sense that they prefer a big, bold Shiraz wine from the Barossa Valley. They also drink more Merlot wine than any other star sign. The white wine drinking Taurus tends to prefer sipping on a Margaret River Chardonnay, or a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc from the Hunter Valley.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
82
Red wine drinking Virgos prefer an elegant, medium bodied Clare Valley Shiraz, while white wine drinking Virgos prefer a subtle Pinot Gris from South Australia. Of all the star signs, Virgos drink the most Sparkling Shiraz, a great Aussie sparkling red wine to enjoy with food. In other words, a practical bottle of bubbles, which is quite fitting to Virgos’ practical nature.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
Aquarius(January 20 to February 18)
Aquarians are open minded, over thinkers, unpredictable and independent – they tend to be visionaries and leaders, and like to do things their own way. When it comes to their wine choices, Aquarians are big red wine drinkers, and more than half of Aquarians prefer Shiraz to any other wine varietal – which might come down to their need to analyse things and use their mind. Trying the endless range of Shiraz wines, the variety that Australia is famous for producing, keeps them on their toes.
Pisces (February 19 to March 20)
Pisces are known to be generous, compassionate caring and faithful. They are more intuitive than other zodiacs, and often have an artistic talent. Pisces are big white wine drinkers, and are one of the top drinkers of Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. They also have a soft spot for a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc from Margaret River. When it comes to red wine, they enjoy a Cab Sav from Coonawarra, or a Cabernet blend from the Limestone Coast.

Galleries & ART WHAT’S HOT ON THE ART SCENE
A night in Italy... Local artist, Helen Peel opened her solo exhibition 'La Dolce Vita' to the sounds of champagne corks popping and happy chatter from the throng of happy art lovers meandering through the Julia Carter Gallery in Noosaville, reminiscing about their trips through Italy. Helen's paintings offered rich portraits and life scenes that drew the viewer into the romance of Italy, and induced recollections of past passions and adventures.
Reimagined Australian Collection Stanley Place, Cultural Precinct South Bank, Brisbane Queensland 4101, Australia FREE ENTRY www.qagoma.qld.gov.au An exciting reimagining of the Australian collection opens this summer. Our curators, along with Director Chris Saines, have taken this rare opportunity to re-present the Gallery’s Australian art holdings, collected for more than 120 years, in new and innovative ways. The reconfigured spaces capture major historical moments from first contact to colonisation, and exploration to immigration. Bringing the Indigenous and contemporary Australian collections together with the Gallery’s historical holdings, the display emphasises stories about Queensland and Brisbane from the region’s own perspective. The Australian Collection is our first step towards returning the Queensland Art Gallery building, as closely as possible, to the intended vision of architect Robin Gibson AO, an expansive, open space with clear sightlines throughout, lending each gallery a beautiful sense of connectedness to the whole. The plan to open up the building enabled us to think of the space in an expansive way. Passersby in the Whale Mall will again be able to look down into the Gallery through our reopened windows. Bringing together art from different times and across cultures, we trace narratives of geography — as country, as landscape, as the place we live and work — and we share stories of traversal and encounter, of immigration, colonisation and the expatriate experience. Visit the Australian collection hub to delve into the stories and connections between the artists and artworks on display.

rom his life as an artist to that date, maybe he should have chosen Braveheart, as nothing daunted Weaver Hawkins. Following a wonderful 4 years studying fine art at Camberwell School of art in London, Harold and many like him, enlisted to fight in WW1. He served in a signals unit, and finally went into the first and most dangerous attack by the allies at the Somme. Harold was very badly wounded , and after 3 years of very painful surgery he recovered, but minus any use of his right arm, and

successful exhibitions already to his credit, this year Michael confined his painting largely to commissioned pieces and produced a record number of paintings for private and corporate clients all over Australia and New Zealand as well as Hong Kong, Germany, the US and the UK. Now back home after a long sojourn in his native England to his hinterland home and studio, Michael has been preparing a new body of work for show at Jive Art from late December. He says that on his trip he ‘indulged in visits to the places that musically and artistically I was drawn to in my youth. They say you can’t go back, but I did and it was even better than I imagined. Or maybe I just understand and appreciate it more now. The art scene in London was incredibly vibrant and it wasn’t just constrained to the major public and private Galleries. Even the street art was amazing!’. Michael has returned itching to put this inspiration to good use and noted that while that the
spark for a painting can come from many sources, it can be difficult to extend this into a coherent body of work without serious preparation and thought. He says, his travels, the Noosa National Park, the beaches, the river or long ride on his Harley through Queensland’s stunning country towns all feed into his work, but once he lays a blank canvas down, it is his mind and music that lets his brush truly soar. When not painting Michael indulges in his other love – buying and renovating houses with his wife Lorraine. While others do most of the work, Lorraine laughs that it can be hard to reign him in when he’s got a brush in one hand, a can of paint in the other and is facing a blank bedroom wall. So far though, he has contained his creativity to just the odd door mural or two. We say, lucky new owners! See Michael Whitehead’s art at Jive Art, 2 Hastings Street, Noosa Heads. www.jiveart.com.au

Craig McLachlan is returning to his Helpmann Award-winning role as Frank N Furter in the perennial rock'n'roll musical, The Rocky Horror Show.

Get in on the Act at Noosa Arts Theatre Noosa Arts Theatre - What's On Storytelling is at the heart of what we do.
Stories to make you laugh a little, sigh a little and cr y a little. Stories with the widest possible variety, from pantomime to engage the wide-eyed youngest, to plays holding a mirror to Australian society, to giving a voice to new playwrights—from outrageously entertaining to heartfelt tribute.
udiences and critics alike were won over by Craig's exuberant (and deliciously camp) portrayal of the 'mad' scientist (come party boy), and the love affair with the media and audiences continues. From the moment Craig hits the stage to thunderous applause - in his black fishnets, high heels, and sexy undies - he simply oozes charm, cheekiness, with a good pinch of evil ostentatiousness thrown in for good measure. With every flirtatious wink, sideways look and flick of his tongue across his rouged lips, Craig McLachlan becomes the masterful and flamboyant (yet slightly insecure) Frank N Furter. With a soundtrack that has stood the test of time and still gets the audience singing along in their seats - The Rocky Horror Show is as relevant and entertaining today as it was 42 years ago. I can't think of any other show that has run as long, or created such a cult following. And, if you haven't guessed by now that I'm a Rocky Horror Show tragic - you haven't been paying attention. I even made the trip to Sydney in 2015 for the 40th Anniversary production and managed to sit in the front row, so that I could enjoy every word, look and feather. Once thought of as a quiet riverside precinct, Noosaville has grown and evolved into a small, friendly metropolis of fabulous cafĂŠs and restaurants, and boasting an eclectic mix of stunning shopping opportunities for savvy consumers.
F
rom sunrise to sunset along the park that runs adjacent to the Noosa River (known as the 'golden mile') you'll see a passing parade of people walking their dogs, others taking the time to amble along watching the boats as they motor or sail past; devotees of tai chi and yoga carefully going through their movements; and others enjoying a quiet cup of coffee with friends; while mothers and holiday makers take their little ones for a walk or ride under the bowers of towering trees. Along the foreshore, helpful information centre staff will book tours for you to visit Fraser Island (the world's largest sand island, and home to Australia's purest dingos), as well as trips to the mystical Everglades, or themed cruises. With playgrounds and exercise equipment, as well as electric barbecues, and
covered table and bench seating positioned around the area, it is the perfect place for a family get together. The carefree nature of the area is mirrored by the gentle wings of the pelicans as they soar high above before coasting in to the shoreline in search of the prime position for sleeping or checking out the chance of catching a fish down below; as those wishing to spend some time on the water hire kayaks, paddle boards, small boats and pontoons from the local boat shed operators. If not so inclined, you can still enjoy the river by hopping aboard the ferry for a leisurely cruise. All this and only 10 minutes drive from Hastings Street. What are you waiting for?
