Out & about GREAT TIMES & EVENTS

• Good Food & Wine •

Brisbane welcomed celebrity chefs from around Australia to join with our local food heroes, to entertain, entice and educate local foodies about the reasons why, we all need to support our regional producers and Australian wine and spirit makers. Maggie Beer, Matt Moran and Alistair McLeod were on-hand at the Wine Selector’s media breakfast to give us all a giggle, as well as a fun wine and food matching course (even if 8am in the morning was a bit heavy duty).

Seafolly @ SeaElements… What a great idea…a sunset shopping night in Hastings Street complete with antipasto platters and Chandon’s special Seafolly liveried Rosé and Brut. Just like the Pied Piper of Hamelin…the bubbles and bright lights attracted all the savvy shoppers to Sea Elements to check out the spectacular, new Summer ranges.

Forget the horses… there’s good food and great wine to be had Embassy XO in Sunshine Beach, hosted a fabulous Melbourne Cup luncheon, which gave all the fillies and stallions the opportunity to don their finest clothes and hats for a day of laughter, good times, some winners, some losers - but always happy and satiated diners. And with flutes of Laurent Perrier and a stunning 5-course luncheon, guests found it easy to forget that many of their horses were still running - well after the race had finished.

Santa flips the switch… Hastings Street came to a standstill at sunset recently, as Santa Claus visited Noosa to say hi to the little people and their families, and flip the switch to light the huge ‘Christmas’ tree at the roundabout. With presents for all the children, fairies on stilts, a blow-up walking Christmas tree, and carollers outside Secrets Shhh - the event was a huge success.

Spelling out creative and personal ambitions is so easy for someone as lucid and likeable as musician, husband and devoted father Keith Urban, as Noosa Style discovers.

Wed 6 Feb

Story: SIMONE LEE

You know, in some ways, it’s not easy being Keith Urban. In a music industry where the pursuit of credibility now seems to come before everything else, the 51-year-old Kiwi isn’t exclusively revered for his own efforts… more, he gets laden with the tag ‘Nicole Kidman’s husband’.

S

uch a lazy moniker is of course grossly unfair. His early years breaking through in the music industry predate film star wife Kidman’s time on the big screen - by the time her breakthrough role in 1989’s Dead Calm came about, Urban was already putting together the various parts of his self-titled debut album on EMI Records. And over the years that followed, the hugely talented guitarist and frontman would use an unrelenting passion for the country music genre to record with Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw and Dolly Parton, as well as showing a harder edge through collaborations and support work for the likes of INXS, Bryan Adams and Kid Rock.

Urban was born in Whangarei, New Zealand, but his family quickly relocated to Caboolture on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. It was there, in his parents’ convenience store, that he first picked up an instrument – a ukulele to be exact – and when local resident Sue McCarthy put an advert in the shop window offering guitar tuition, his pursuit of something special truly started. “I do sometimes wonder what would have happened if Sue hadn’t decided to take out an advert,” he begins. “I’m sure I would have found my way into this career, but perhaps it would have taken a lot longer, and maybe I would have needed to sacrifice a lot more than I have done.” Sacrifice is an interesting word, and it’s slightly remiss of Urban to suggest his path through the industry has been a smooth ride. It wasn’t until the release of his third album, in 1999 – after a decade as a signed artist, and before that, playing four hours a night, five nights a week in local clubs – did recognition outside of the country genre begin to come his way. By that point he also had to battle addiction demons, ones that would fleetingly return later in his career.

“I think all the work I have put in over the years has really been countered by the endless joy and satisfaction that music offers,” he says. “Perhaps if I was doing a job that was more repetitive or mundane then at this point in my life I might declare that I’d had it enough of it all; but music is so ever-changing, and it’s actually very difficult to ever get tired of something that evolves on every note and every chord. I probably underplay the hard work that I’ve put in, but the truth is it’s always been such a pleasure.” What also helps Urban in terms of compartmentalising the music industry is the incredible family life he has away from the bright

“My father certainly supported me, but there wasn’t ever an outpouring of love, and I guess my own parenting style is very different – I want to be as vocally loving and gentle to my kids, and I want them to know that the decisions they make are always the right ones, and it’s not a case of doing things to please their parents. I think that’s really important.” Urban is also outspoken about his thrill of having two girls under his watch. “I think as a father the natural assumption is that you want a boy to follow in your footsteps, but in truth to be able to care for and protect my girls gives me the greatest feeling I can describe.

“We consciously draw ourselves away from work and we are a very close-knit family who just concentrate on making time for each other”

“I live in a house of girls and there is so much kindness and creativity for me to feed off, so I feel very lucky to be a part of that.” At the heart of this showbiz couple’s ability to ride the course whilst ignoring the trappings and distractions of fame is a levelheadedness that ensures life in the spotlight is kept separate. “We consciously draw ourselves away from work and we are a very close-knit family who just concentrate on making time for each other,” he says. “Of course there is that separate world, but when we’re together we don’t invite it in.” lights. He and Kidman have two girls, Sunday, 10, and Faith, seven; they are, in short, his world. “My time with the girls is the most precious thing I could ever have. It’s interesting, because I think there was always a part of me trying to please my father and trying to gain his approval,” Urban admits, “and I know that’s not an unusual thing in kids, but it did lead me to strive to be the best I could all of the time.

While that loving homelife exists, Urban’s music career is no longer his top priority, so it’s somewhat ironic that his success, on a global scale, has never been greater. He is now a constant in the mainstream charts, not just specialist country listings, with this year’s Graffiti U album peaking at number two in Australia, after previous albums Fuse and Ripcord both hit the top spot. “The momentum is there and that’s great, and we do share in that continues next page...

KEITH’S QUICKFIRE Q&A: Does the material you write now reflect this part of your life where everything has come together? Keith: “Well I was in a meet ‘n’ greet recently where I got asked a similar question, and it was along the lines of ‘how do I write without any trouble or difficulty in my life?’. I had to correct the guy pretty quickly about the idea that I didn’t still have trouble or conflict! I think the bigger point is that, as a songwriter, you still have a huge well of material to draw upon; you still have all those life experiences and all that pain and emotion that galvanises you to be creative in music. I would never want to lose that, and I feel that no matter what happens around us, we all still have real challenges to overcome. Life is never easy, but it is rewarding.”

What morals do you and Nicole jointly pass down to your children? Keith: “For me, and this is so inspired by Nicole, it’s really the idea that you have to try something without fear or boundaries. It’s the message that everything is open and possible, but you have to go after it with 100% conviction, and don’t sit back and judge it until you are finished. We are in a culture of critiquing as we go, and that’s very dangerous because it kills the creative spark dead. The better way is just to play out the job to the very best of your ability, then judge it after the event, but consider anything as possible.”

What’s the secret to being happy? Keith: “For me it’s a lot about looking to the future but being grateful for whatever has happened in the past. I do like to think back, sometimes getting melancholy about events or people or actions, but I think that’s healthy because it grounds me again in the present and it shows me that everything moves forward it you allow it to.” continues from previous pages

as a family. The girls really enjoy the thrill of the music industry and the process by which things get done,” says Urban, who is playing 10 Australia dates across January and February next year in Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne, as part of a world tour that also takes in Germany, Netherlands, the UK and the US. “I see that excitement in their eyes, just as I had as a young kid when I was starting to learn how the whole thing worked.” And does he hope they might follow him into onto the stage?

“It’s all their decision – obviously they have a few choices in terms of which creative path they might want to follow, mine or their mum’s… or perhaps just something totally different. “I know as a father you cannot force it. I think back to the first gig I went to – it was Johnny Cash. Still recalling now what he did on stage gives me goose bumps. It was something incredible, but you can’t force that – it’s either there or it’s not. For us, as a family, the mantra is always ‘nothing to hide but everything to protect’, and I think most parents would agree with that message.”

NS TRANSIT PEOPLE... TRANSIT people are citizens of the world with their own personalities. They are inquisitive, elegant and capable of understanding culture and appreciating the true value of everything around us. They pay no heed to passing fads. They go straight to the heart of the matter and seek out the comfortable sensations that only a highly sophisticated material can convey. They are people who love restrained, timeless innovation and design.

THE COMPANY.. The parent company of TRANSIT is Tam & Company and it was founded in 1986 by Andrea Cozza, Who still runs the group today. It is still completely family run with no input from external managers or consultants, so everyone answers direct to the family. When it was founded the company had one knitting machine and one sewing machine in an area of 80 m2. Today it spans approximately 7000m2 and it has the very best production systems on the market. Tam & Company is something of a rarity because it is one of the few companies in Italy that still keeps its entire production cycle in house. Everything is conceived, designed and made on the company premises. It is a form of industrial craftsmanship . More than 100 people work for the company. They constitute the very heart of its existence.

THE PHILOSOPHY High quality raw materials, understated elegance, personality , freedom relaxation and a big focus on the quality versus price : these words encapsulate TRANSIT’s approach to both clothing and life which it sees as a search for essence and quality. They firmly believe that people should be respected and dressed, but never covered by a garment or brand as they would like the personality of their customers to shine through. Hence the desire for the family to surround itself with people whose vast experience and long careers have taught them that the key to quality is not big names but outstanding raw materials, innovative but simple designs, lots of craftsmanship and work , and a passion for beauty.

Transit is all exclusively made in Italy and the Autumn /Winter ‘19 collection is available now at BELLISSIMA Noosa!

Summer in Australia conjures stereotypical images of red and yellow flags, golden pristine beaches, clear-blue waters with barrelling waves, long boards, short boards, board shorts, bleached hair and bikinis. Story: Naomi Hansen BVSc (Hons) MVS MACVSc

N

oosa epitomises every ideal of the Australian summer, and each year our beautiful town attracts a plethora of people and their pets escaping their reality for the postcard holiday. Hidden in the fine print of the postcard Noosa summer holiday is the reality of nature and the postcard holiday can end up with our pet(s) in the Animal Emergency Centre (AEC) if we are not careful. We are all aware of the ticks and the snakes that reside in the undergrowth and the beach dunes but did you know that salt water can literally blow your pets mind/brain? Salt water intoxication (aka hypernatremia) can sneak up on our pets as they try to quench their thirst with the salt water rather than fresh water. Salt is osmotically active and can cause abnormal fluid shifts within the body and fluid retention in inappropriate body fluid spaces. Interestingly, hypernatremia can occur in children as easily as in our pets, generally associated with eating playdough or drinking soy sauce… not your typical holiday read but 100% true. The moral to the story: Always take fresh, clean drinking water to the beach with your pet and if your pet starts acting a bit dull/depressed after a day at the beach contact your local veterinarian or AEC Noosa as this is an early indication that their salt water ingestion could be problematic. Another fun pet fact is that pets do not really sweat, panting is their primary means of cooling their bodies on hot days. This is easy for dogs with noses but really hard for squashed-face breeds (aka: brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs and pugs) they are, quite simply, inefficient panters. In the best interest of keeping your precious pet brachycephalic out of the AEC please refrain from exercising these canine kids on the beach during the day in summer.

Model: ‘Alaska’ Bull Arab-Pointer cross

18

NoosaStyleLiving

Heat stress: In the event that your pet sneaks out on a hot day, runs around and starts making horrible snorting/breathing sounds whilst panting you must start active cooling (cold wet towels) and load your family into the wagon for a trip to the AEC Whilst we are on the topic of pets at the beach please ensure you adhere to the local council guidelines regarding pet restraint at the beach. The local beaches are designated on/off/no pet beach areas and it is important that we respect these guidelines in the best interest of pet safety.

oosa Head has long been regarded as a fashion mecca for visitors from around Australia and overseas, those who travel to the region with only one thought in mind - let me loose in the high-end fashion boutiques, and local stores that offer worldclass, designer wear, intriguing local creations, and beautiful resort and beachwear. Noosa’s beating heart would have to be treelined boulevard, Hastings Street, a pedestrianfriendly avenue that is a magnet for visitors, who love our cosmopolitan cafés, designer shopping and al fresco dining venues. Noosa Council has worked hard over the years to ensure the low-rise profile of the town, and guarantee that our the beachside town will never become a metropolis . Surrounded by the calm waters of Laguna Bay, Noosa National Park and the ever-tranquil Noosa River, it’s no wonder Noosa Heads is a favourite holiday destination. With its laid back atmosphere, locals and visitors alike, have plenty of time to browse the bookshops for their holiday reading choices; try on some locally designed jewellery and accessories, or spend time in the local art galleries. dining options, whether its an early morning coffee start your day, a quick snack on the run before hitting the surf, or a leisurely lunch with friends and family. Upstairs you’ll find the new Hop & Vine Bar and restaurant, serving stylish asian tapas style sharing plates and boutique beers, as well as a great location above the shopping street. And, when you need a break from your retail therapy, just a short step from the avenue, you can meander along the boardwalk on Noosa Main Beach, licking an ice-cream from one of the parlours and taking in the bright blue ocean vista; before deciding on the perfect luncheon venue. If you are so inclined, you can also continue on this path to Noosa National Park. Along the way you can check out the pristine waters of Laguna Bay for dolphins and whales, or spot a koala in the trees. The National Park has many popular bays and surfing spots, not to mention walking paths for a short stroll or a longer hike. And, as the night falls you’ll find and eclectic mix of fine restaurants, live music venues, nightclub and bars - at your fingertips. Noosa has so much to offer.”

MP Life – Noosa Style!

I

n an MP’S world end of year is a mad rush of events, meetings, forward planning and tidying up! Loose ends, project overviews, updates via Noosa 360 and yes, a mail out to every household in the electorate covering the many diverse areas worked on during the year from river health and management to youth unemployment and transport, as well the progression of the ‘hit list’ including the decommissioned TAFE site. This ‘Connect’ also contains handy contact information for residents, and an overview in the confusing world of the various levels of Governments and who does what! There is also a link to the Your Say survey in order to source Noosa priorities for 2019, don’t forget, the collective ‘voice’ is very powerful! The December edition of our monthly newsletter is also inserted, and I look forward to your feedback, as well any suggestions for additions you would like to see in the future. End of year is also time of reflection, a time look at our blessings, and in Noosa we have so many. Every day I am deeply appreciative and inspired by our incredible people and organisations, and the impacts they have on our community. Those that tirelessly work to provide services voluntarily, that create awareness of an issue, and that look for ways to resolve a need. We would not have what we enjoy without them, nor the level of safety and security that is delivered by our front line service crews – they are very much our local heroes! To all who make our world a better place by being courteous, offering a smile, or assisting a neighbour, thank you so very much. What you create every day in the simplicity of doing a kindness to a friend or stranger creates a much better world right now, and into the future. This is both being the change you want to see, and seeing that change. The perfect circle of ‘paying it forward’ also generates self-perpetuating goodwill and goodness, helping to overcome the deeds of those that may not do ‘good’, and the sadness many people experience through sorrow, hardship and loneliness that is especially heightened at this time of the year. To all Noosa Style readers, may you have time with loved ones, and a bit of extra time to reflect on our blessings? Especially those that we may not appreciate on a daily basis, including living in a beautiful, caring community in a country that is not torn apart by war or famine. We have such a lot to be thankful for, and for this MP this Christmas, the bliss of being able to don my ‘crazy granny’ hat is my ‘Dear Santa’ wish. Merry, merry Christmas everyone. May your stocking be filled with good health, good will, and a ‘pay it forward’ moment from where you least expect it. I look forward to seeing you on the street, in the park or water side…or out exploring our wonderful Noosa countryside! Warmest regards

rom her home on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Nikki has developed a thriving and successful business doing what she loves to do best – creating feminine clothing using exclusive fabrics to flatter and define women’s silhouettes.

She first started selling her wares many years ago creating unique pieces out of vintage crochet and lace at Eumundi and Southbank markets. She developed a steady clientele and following that, she then started selling online.. The online business grew so much that she was able to concentrate on this side of the business and open her first boutique in Noosa. From there, the business has continued to grow, with another boutique along the esplanade in Mooloolaba and various pop up stores on the coast, including Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore.

Nikki’s relaxed and cheerful demeanour is a refreshing change in the sometimes uptight world of fashion. She is happiest at home, with her husband, Bill and two daughters, Bailey and Charlie, and her mischievous toy poodle, Frankie. She credits her success to the support of her family and friends, and her enthusiasm for her work is evident when she speaks of how gratifying it is to see women looking and feeling wonderful in her designs. She believes every woman of every age and every shape should feel beautiful in their clothing, and with that as her business motto, she is constantly adding to her collections pieces that are not only unique, but that cater to every woman. In her studio at home, she can be found hand sewing vintage crochets and laces whilst handpicking Italian linens and silks,

Indian cottons and myriad accessories and adornments to create her stunning collections. Nikki is a true Sunshine Coast local. She has a fierce love of fitness and the outdoors and is often seen running through the Noosa National park, and swimming in the crystal clear waters off Granite Bay. She competes regularly in the Noosa Tri, and is a firm believer in the positive results that an active, healthy lifestyle brings. Nikki and her family are seasoned world travellers, regularly jetting off to source fabrics for her collections; but Nikki says that coming home to the Sunshine Coast is often the best part of being away. And when you call Noosa home, it’s easy to understand why.

Donna Marie Lifestyle & Design decided to get back into the fashion industry around eight years ago, after having studied Fashion at The Gorden Institute, Victoria. “I try to offer our customers a selection of the finest of fabrics, which I source mainly from Europe, namely Italian Linens and Silk, but i’m now expanding into cottons, and with the help of our tailors, transform these fabrics into beautiful clothing for our customers.” The colour and print of the fabric is visually important, but more so the feel, texture and how this fabric will end up in a garment, is imperative in the selection of materials. With a shop at Peregian Beach and now at Noosa Junction, Donna invites you to pop in, look at her range - and have a chat with our friendly sales staff.

An Aladdin’s cave of possibilities in the Junction...

LOULOUAUSTRALIA

If you’ve ever meandered past the little Aladdin’s cave of mystery and delight, George Magasic’s Jewellery, Antiques and Collectables (near the cinema) in Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Junction, you’ve no doubt been intrigued by who and what might wait within.

I

t seems that a seachange from Sydney to Noosa some 18 years ago, brought George Magasic and his love of the unusual, quaint, interesting - and in some cases hidden treasures, to his quirky, old-world treasure emporium in Noosa Junction.

George’s love of selling, buying and trading antiques and collectables, whether they be fine jewellery, comic books or artworks, porcelain or rare pieces with historical significance - you will find something to suit all penchants. With over 37 years experience in the trade, George is also the perfect person to evaluate your ‘possibly’ priceless treasures, handed down by family members over the years. Your grandmother’s porcelain vase or grandfather’s war memorabilia could be more than just another item on your mantlepiece gathering dust - they could be your opportunity to take that long-planned overseas trip or set you on the path to retirement. And, George is always happy to take a look and give you an honest estimate of their value, whether great or small. So, if you’re ready to step inside and be delighted by the shelves and cabinets overflowing with possibilities, be prepared to take your time and explore. Find us on Google Maps You never know what George may have just discovered.

Ronel with her children Ella, 6 and Christiaan, 5 outside their store in Kenilworth

A

fter spending 25 years in South Africa, and nine in New Zealand, it was a trip to the Sunshine Coast for work that prompted Ronel and Christiaan Van der Berg to pack up their family and move to their forever home.

“I came over to the Sunshine Coast for a course I was doing, went home and said we’re moving to the Sunshine Coast,” says Ronel. “I think my husband saw in my eyes that something in me had changed and I am so grateful that he allowed me to move our family over.” Ronel and Christiaan grew up in the North Eastern part of South Africa, right on the doorstep of the Kruger National Park. “My life growing up in South Africa was surreal,” says Ronel. “When I think back now it all feels like a dream.” In the late 1960’s Ronel’s grandfather and father bought a farm that had a beautiful, 7 kilometres deep cave on it, and together the pair developed the Sudwala Caves, which became a well-loved tourist attraction in South Africa. “Although developing the caves was a big part of his life, my father’s true passion was always Nature Conservation and he spent most of his life creating a farm big enough to accommodate elephants. “Alongside like-minded farmers, he created the Karongwe Game

Reserve in the Limpopo province, working alongside my brother.” Although they didn’t yet know what the future would hold, Ronel’s brother worked and filmed with the Sunshine Coast’s muchloved Steve Irwin. “Steve came to the farm to film a leopard that had to be darted and operated on.” At the time, Ronel was a teacher of 45 children, many who had lost their parents to HIV or were raising baby brothers and sisters with the help of a relative. Christiaan studied agriculture and worked on Lychee, Mango and Sugar Cane farms growing up.

“South Africa, like Australia is incredibly beautiful and diverse. “What I like least is the fact that with that diversity comes different views and it breaks my heart that until today there is so much hatred amongst its own people. So much so that we can’t be there.” Before starting a family, Ronel and Christiaan decided it was time to leave South Africa for the safety of their future children. They relocated to New Zealand, before a trip to Kenilworth sealed their fate. “Everything about the Mary Valley reminds me of the part of South Africa that we grew up in. “The mountains, the lush green trees, the creatures and even the snakes. “When we got off the plane

in Brisbane, we drove straight to Kenilworth to collect our keys for our rental home. “I remember getting out of the car, looking up and down the street and feeling an overwhelming sense of relief, like I’m finally home.” RONEL SAYS THE MAIN CULTURAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HER NEW AND FORMER HOMES IS ACCEPTANCE AND TOLERANCE.

“Steve came to the farm to film a leopard that had to be darted and operated on.”

“I love the fact that there are so many people from all over the world that have made the Sunshine Coast their home. “Many people like me loved the life here on the Coast so much that they moved their whole life here.” Earlier this year, Ronel and Christiaan went about launching their boutique shoe shop Sole of Africa in Kenilworth. The Tsonga shoes are hand stitched shoes that are made close to where Ronel grew up in South Africa. While Ronel runs the store, Christiaan works on a Macadamia farm in Cedar Pocket. The couple’s goals now are for the store to remain open in their small, country village, and to raise grateful and happy children. “I would love to take my children home to spend time with their family on the farm and to see the beautiful caves their grandfather brought to life, but until things stabilise in South Africa we are so honoured to call the Sunshine Coast our home.”

Profile THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT

mans best friend! Words: Nicole Madigan After spending two years searching for a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Assistance Dog for her husband Roger, who was experiencing PTSD, along with depression, alcohol dependence and chronic pain - the result of 14 years in the air force - Angie Weeks decided to take matters into her own hands.

T

here are only a handful of training organisations for PTSD dogs, and all are at crisis with supply versus demand,” says Ms Weeks. “Seeing the chronic need and hearing from a cross section of the emergency service sector and ADF, I just knew we were not alone.” And so PTSD Dogs Australia was born - a non-profit organisation sourcing and training dogs to help mitigate the effects of PTSD within an individual person. “Our dogs predominantly come from dog shelters and refuges, and through an extensive temperament test, we find those dogs who are gentle, intuitive, intelligent and empathetic,” says Ms Weeks. “These dogs come in all shapes and sizes but the one common denominator is their ability to read a human’s emotional state and act on it.”

PTSD Dogs Australia also trains dogs already owned by individual PTSD sufferers, providing they meet the same criteria. “It is well recognised that the unconditional love of a dog helps lift the dreaded blues, even reduce blood pressure - a PTSD Dog does all this, plus can help veterans remember to take their medication, or even wake them during a nightmare, turn on a light and return for a cuddle. “In the situation of an anxiety episode or white-out, the dog will lead their handler to their car, or they can alert a person for help.”

56

NoosaStyleLiving

Local refuges are becoming increasingly aware of PTSD Dogs Australia and will reach out if they feel they have a dog who fits the bill. “We want the dog that wags whilst working, the happy dog who is not concerned by sirens, other barking dogs or strange smells.” Once the dog is purchased, it’s matched with a veteran, who has completed a detailed questionnaire relating to their needs, and the training of the team begins. Training covers physical pain, nightmares and flashbacks, self-harm avoidance therapy, deep pressure therapy, hypervigilance and blocking and medication alert. The organisation was launched at Hervey Bay but recently relocated to the Sunshine Coast, home to Australia’s largest retired police and veteran community. “It is only early days but we have six dogs on the ground - soon to be another four. “All our people are having awesome experiences with their dogs. One Veteran has reduced his medication by half, another is learning to connect with his family again, through the unconditional love his dog gives him. Another no longer feels suicide is an option.” Unfortunately, funding is an issue. Each dog takes between 12 and 18 months to train and can cost up to $40,000, which covers the initial temperament assessment to the intensive training of all required skills. “Presently, as Founder and Director I wear every hat imaginable, from trainer to poo-picker-upper to administration and marketing. “To top this off - I have a care position for my husband and the dog and human teams. I am currently funding it via a small business I also operate.” If you’d like to help PTSD Dogs Australia, you can sponsor a dog and handler team, which includes naming rights. The group is also seeking volunteers in marketing and social media, community liaison and market support. www.ptsddogs.com.au

Cooroy THE BIG LITTLE COUNTRY TOWN

This family-friendly, hinterland township boasts an impressive list of dining, cultural, heritage and natural experiences for everyone.

Just like all small townships in the hinterland, the ‘local’ hotel usually takes pride of place. A meeting place for locals to grab a drink, talk about their day, and get together with friends and relatives in a convivial location. And, just so, the Cooroy Hotel sits in the middle of the town, on Maple Street - the beating heart of the town originally called Coorooey (an indigenous name derived from the language of the Gubbi Gubbi people), and meaning Possum taken from Mount Cooroy. THE BIG LITTLE COUNTRY TOWN

T

his historic township, sits where o n c e the land was covered in art cooroy jude tulloch’ billowing ‘ thick rainforest and magnificent stands of tall timber, before the arrival of Europeans, and has a rich history in the timber industry, The town has strived to maintain a number of its heritage buildings and sites, which make it an ideal day or weekend drive destination.

Now a full time gallery, and workspace for art classes, workshops and exhibitions. The perfect place to nurture the community’s cultural and creative vibe.

I love long country drives on the weekend, but those in the know also make the time to visit during the week, when it is usually a little bit quieter. As Cooroy has an impressive array of cafés, restaurants and healthy alternative eateries, bakeries, French restaurant, and even a trendy pizza parlour, there isn’t the necessity to pre-plan where you’ll be lunching. There is a vast array of options to suit all budgets and dietary needs.

The Noosa Botanic Gardens also share the same precinct, sitting on the foreshore of Lake MacDonald and offering nature lovers and opportunity to wander through a cornucopia of trees and plants, with over eight hectares of native and exotic plant species, and over 94 species of birds to see. Beautiful water views over the lake make this site the perfect location for a leisurely stroll or family picnic, with tables and shelters available throughout the gardens, graded pathways and restrooms (incl disabled access) and bench seats positioned throughout the area, offering visitors a place to sit quietly and reflect. Each year the gardens play host to musical recitals in the Greek-style amphitheatre, and weddings in the open-air bush chapel. A perfect day out for you and your family.

And, if you decide to linger longer…there are many B&Bs in the area waiting to welcome you, and evening dining is so romantic in a country setting. Shopping in the cute boutiques around town is a pleasure, there’s so much to choose from - many would be just as at home in Hastings Street. You can find beautiful shoes and accessories at Cooroy Shoes and Accessories, where owner Maree Millar is always ready to assist with styling tips; and high-end leather goods and mens attire are available at Cooroy Country Mens Wear & Jeanery (don’t worry women are catered for as well)., where owner Kerry Martin has years of experience and anecdotes to share with customers.

Creativity abounds in the quiet township, which supports the Mill Place Precinct (Lower Mill site); a creative learning precinct in the heart of town, which includes the Cooroy Library, the Ceramics Workshop, the Cooroora Woodworkers, a group of over 100 woodworking devotees; and Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Initiative, a liaison between several workers who formed their group after the Cooroy Timber mill closed over 10 years ago; and of course, the highly respected, Butter Factory Arts Centre, sitting in the original Cooroy Butter Factory which was built in 1930.

Lake MacDonald sits in an idyllic rural setting just minutes away from the township, and is home to a wide range of wildlife. If you’re in to fishing, then this is the place to test your skills with the chance to catch, Bass, Saratoga and Perch - you might even find an iconic Mary River Cod, but be sure to place them back in the water afterwards, for the next fisherman to try their hand. You’ll often find bird watchers by the lake, and energetic canoe paddlers gliding by.

So be sure to drive the short 40 minutes from Noosa and check out this little village of dreams in the near future. I think Santa has Cooroy on his ‘must visit list’. COOROY Country Menswear & Jeanery

FOR ARTIST, PHOTOGRAPHER AND CONSERVATIONIST JUSTIN BRUHN, ART REQUIRES MORE THAN THE SIMPLE GOAL OF MAKING A SPACE MORE BEAUTIFUL.

Nature at it’s best...

I

n fact, Justin believes an artist should use their talent to speak directly to the world, in a way that doesn’t get drowned out by the rest of society’s noise. “Art has a way of connecting people’s emotions to other worlds and

“Here I worked with the amazing marine life on our Great Barrier Reef, including the giant potato cod on the Ribbon Reefs.” transcending one’s thoughts and feelings into a space where ideas for positive change can be born,” says Justin.

“The purpose behind my work as an artist is to inspire conscious thought to marine conservation and encourage people to take more care of our oceans,” Justin’s deep love of the ocean and all that dwells within began when he was just a little boy. “I first developed an interest in marine life when I was a small child playing in rock pools on family holidays by the beach in South Australia. “The small fish and crabs fascinated me.” Justin would don a mask and snorkel, and dive into the water at every chance, in the hope of viewing as many ocean-dwellers in their natural habitat as possible.

64

NoosaStyleLiving

“I wanted to find a way to express my love of the ocean, and this was the perfect way to do it.” It was during a stint on a liveaboard dive boat where Justin was first able to combine his two loves, working as a photographer and videographer, capturing stunning marine moments, as the boat travelled out to the Coral Sea off Cairns.

And he doesn’t just talk the talk. Justin creates art specifically to facilitate his passion for marine conservation, in the hope that his stunning photography will reach people in a way that direct activism may not.

dives in a 6 month period.” Of course, there was also his other passion photography. “I’ve always had an interest in photography.

In his early twenties, Justin’s love of marine life would also become a way to make a living. “I decided to take off on an around the world adventure and found myself working as a Dive Master on a tropical island in the gulf of Thailand, where I accumulated around 400 scuba

During those early days, Justin began entering photo competitions, and it was those successes that gave him the confidence to seriously consider artistic photography as a potential career. “My success gave me the confidence to get serious about investing in the professional equipment required to capture high quality images. Justin’s first big break was being accepted into the David Hart Galleries here on the Sunshine Coast back in 2013. “This gave me a fantastic opportunity for exposure in the art world. “The mentoring that I received from David Hart himself was invaluable.” The rest, as they say, is history. In 2018, Justin Bruhn was awarded the Sunshine Coast Business Award for Creative Industries for his current artwork collections. His next goal is to open his own gallery on the Sunshine Coast, featuring exhibitions aimed at raising awareness, along with much needed funds, for marine conservation in Australia. “I have been privileged to have so many breathtaking encounters with marine life over the years. “I want to encourage a love of our oceans through my work as an artist and a photographer. “As Jacques Cousteau once said, ‘We protect what we love’.”

to experience a taste sensation of the Sunshine Coast region. To mention a few, award winners Cooloola Milk and their cream is used to make our luscious butter to serve with our sourdough. Forage Farm provides the free range and pastured eggs that are poached at breakfast, to the ones that set our cheesecake. Winners of the ‘Delicious Award for 2018’ Rhodavale Pork, located North West of Gympie, are passionate on raising their animals in an ethical and humane way and they supply the pork belly and scotch fillet. Located in the same region is Bendele Farm Poultry, providing succulent spatchcock and chicken. They have been supplying butchers and restaurants over the coast for more than 20 years. Along with keeping the local produce real, Matt’s priority is to keep it real in the kitchen. He has a yearning to spend as much time as possible training the younger generation chefs, and is passionate about this. His calm, encouraging manner has already become evident in the kitchen with the apprentice chefs benefiting from Matt’s confidence building attitude. The kitchen is rewarded with his energy and grace, while the guests benefit with a memorable culinary experience.

Sunshine Beach FOOD, FUN, BEACH & COFFEE

With its eclectic mix of boutiques, quality restaurants, relaxing bars, al fresco cafés and fabulous coffee shops, a coastal surf culture feel - and friendly village vibe… Sunshine Beach has something for everyone. Kulfi Cardamom Iceblock Region: Pakistan | makes 10 - 12 if using shot glasses | Prep time 20 mins + overnight chilling Cooking: 15 mins | Difficulty - Easy

The subcontinent’s favourite ice cream, kulfi is cleansing, cooling and invigorating. It is flavoured with beautiful spices from its Persian origins, and can also contain fruit such as mango or banana. When it is very hot and you need to cool down, the energy hit from this frozen dessert will get you moving again. 6 green cardamom pods 500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) milk 500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) thick (double) cream 300 g (10½ oz/1 scant cup) condensed milk 50 g (1¾ oz) blanched almonds, ground 50 g (1¾ oz) pistachios, ground 1 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 teaspoon rosewater 50 g (1¾ oz/⅓ cup) roasted crushed pistachios, to garnish

Remove the cardamom seeds from their pods. Using a mortar and pestle, crush the seeds until they resemble freshly cracked black pepper. Set aside.Place a heavy-based saucepan over medium heat. Add the milk, cream and crushed cardamom seeds. Bring to the boil, then add the condensed milk, stirring constantly. Add the almonds, pistachios and ground cardamom.Once the mixture returns to the boil, reduce the heat to low. Cook gently, stirring every 5 minutes or so, for about 10 minutes, or until the mixture has reduced by half. A skin will form on top; just keep stirring it in.Remove from the heat and stir in the rosewater. Allow to cool for 15–20 minutes. Slowly pour the mixture into iceblock (popsicle/ice lolly) moulds or shot glasses, then place in the freezer. After about 30 minutes, when the kulfi is starting to set, place popsicle or ice cream sticks in each mould or glass. Return to the freezer and freeze overnight, or for at least 8 hours; the kulfi will also keep for a few days, if making ahead. To un-mould the kulfi, quickly dip each mould or glass in warm water to loosen them, then turn out onto a small plate. Sprinkle with the roasted crushed pistachios and serve.

Farmgate to Plate OUR FANTASTIC PRODUCE

By Petra Hughes Summer brings with it the gorgeous array of fresh tropical fruits that we are so lucky to be blessed with in the Noosa region. Lychees, mangos, berries and citrus; there is no shortage of healthy options and accessibility is becoming easier than ever, with many retailers focusing on locally grown produce, which is really great to see.

W

ith Christmas, I encourage everyone to support local and stock up with seasonal supplies that are grown or produced locally – I guarantee that they taste better – and you will be supporting local farmers! With that in mind, I love discovering new products and one I have recently become enamoured with is

Electropops. Essentially Electropops are as the name suggests; electrolyte rich natural popsicles. Now, it probably sounds like it is something for children being a popsicle and all, and they are, but as an adult, they are my post-garden, postwork out and my ‘I am hot and thirsty and feel like a healthy treat’ go to. Though I am not one to look for excuses… Electropops was born through a passion for healthy natural treats by founder, Annabel Langley. Annabel was trying to find healthy enjoyable options for her family, and through a journey of discovery, came up with these refreshing ice treats, that ticked all of the boxes when it came to healthy, nutritious, natural, and low in sweeteners. While the merit for children is obvious, as an adult, I love them and since my discovery, always keep a stash in the freezer. Summer is the time of year where it is really important to keep hydrated. While drinking copious amounts of water is important, even more so, is replacing electrolytes that we loose through perspiration, which is what makes these so perfect as a post workout and ‘all of the above’ treat. Annabel played around with a few different flavours – her final flavour range coming down to Pomegranate (my favourite), Raspberry Coconut, Mango Passionfruit and Pineapple Lime. All are high in antioxidants, no added sugar, gluten free, dairy free and use natural fruit juice (not concentrates). Developing the recipes were one thing, expanding from an experimental home kitchen to a purpose built production facility, with specialist machinery was quite another! But they are now settled in and operating from their facility in Forest Glen. The stockist list is growing, with many fitness studios and health food stores throughout Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, stocking Electropops but you can order directly from Electropops, with several pick up options, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect healthy treat to get me through summer. www.electropops.com.au

And then there are the holidays…

It is always difficult to find fun things to do with the kids and visitors over the holiday period. However, if there is one thing that you have to do this summer, that both you, and the kids (big or small) will absolutely love, it is a visit to QCamel Dairy.

Q

e t a g m ar F late to P

Camel would have to be one of the most unique farm tours that you can do on the Sunshine Coast; camel cuddles are pretty special. I was first introduced to Lauren Brisbane from QCamel a number of years ago, but the dairy has gone from strength to strength and they are now open to the public on a regular basis for farm tours.

There is a bit of a perception that camels can be a bit temperamental – and they have been know to spit – but that is not what you will find at QCamel. I put this down to the QCamel’s ethos and farm ethics. At QCamel it is all about kindness and caring. These ‘girls’ are absolutely loved and treasured. They all have names and come milking time, they venture up to the dairy for a feed and a cuddle. They are incredibly curious and loving, and it really is quite special. QCamel came about through Lauren’s quest for alternative farming options. Camels came up, and their first camels were introduced to their property at Bells Creek in 2006. The dairy has come a long way since then and they now play host to a wonderful extended family of over 80 camels and their gorgeous calves at various stages of growth, all as equally curious as their mothers. QCamel recently gained organic certification, making them the first Camel Dairy in Australia to achieve organic certification (in conversion). The milk has become a hot topic of conversation amongst those seeking alternatives to cows milk, as camel milk is absent of the whey proteins that are usually the cause of adverse reactions to those intolerant to normal dairy products.

Of course camel milk is nothing new, camels have been milked for over 5000 years and even in Australia there is a huge demand for camel milk, which has resulted in QCamel also developing an amazing range of camel milk products – smoothies, quark and an insanely divine range of camel milk chocolates in a collaborative project with another Sunshine Coast producer, Kokopod. Their range is ever expanding with various other camel milk products in development – there is a lot more to come. QCamel Farm Tours are by online booking only. Farm tours sell out quickly, so book early. I can guarantee that everyone will love this school holiday outing. www.qcamel.com.au And don’t forget to #supportlocal this Christmas. Maleny & Montville A COUNTRY EXPERIENCE

Porcelain by Johanna De Maine available at Art on Cairncross Gallery

Summer is here and there’s no better time to venture up the Blackall Range for a scenic drive around the rolling hills. The air is still a little cooler on the range, so it’s the perfect spot to escape the heat, as you drive through the picturesque villages of Mapleton, Flaxton, Palmwoods, Witta, Montville and Maleny. It’s also the perfect destination for a romantic weekend getaway at a quiet B & B, or to visit a winery or boutique brewery for a taste of something special, before venturing onto one of the tantalising restaurants or coffee shops that can be located all over the mountain. There’s a particularly fabulous bookshop in Maleny that will have anyone who loves books like me, excited by boundless choice

T

he area is a photographers paradise, as every turn boasts glorious views out over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, large expanses of lush farmland and glimpses of cattle and goats grazing there happily. With parks and gardens always in bloom, as well as a lake, national park, waterfalls, and lily ponds with friendly ducks and geese waiting to be fed. Day-trippers and visitors to the area are provided with a wealth of unique and historical homes and buildings, from old Queenslanders to cute cottages, and sprawling homes - there’s enough to satisfy any architecture buff or history lover. Montville and Maleny are wellknown for their back-to-nature culture and fine restaurants, cafés and artisan communities, the whole region is an extremely popular destination for those wishing to get up to the mountains for some super-fresh air and get-back-to-nature adventures. The perfect spot for an idyllic picnic or mountain-top wedding.

The region is full of design studios, artisan galleries, potteries and quaint shops, full of wonderful treasures that will always delight and sometimes mystify. It’s the perfect place to come in search of that perfect present for a special person or occasion - or a treasured art piece for your home. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a devonshire tea on a pleasant afternoon, before venturing to your B&B, or luxury accommodation with all every convenience you could possibly want on a perfect getaway. With the Blackall Range’s close proximity (it’s just an hour’s drive from the heart of Noosa and one and a half hour’s drive from Brisbane), it’s no wonder that it is the perfect getaway destination for those wishing to take a break from their hectic work schedules, or simply escape the everyday! And, did I mention it is a favourite destination for those wanting a wedding ‘with a view’.

Kenilworth BURSTING WITH LIFE!

Country drives through the hinterland… destination… Kenilworth. There is nothing better than setting out on the Noosa Eumundi Road early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, intent on making the most of your country drive experience.

WEST N COLOUR has a unique range of imported western gear, work wear and great gift ideas...

I

t’s always a good idea to pack an overnight bag when you venture out along the country road to Kenilworth, with thoughts of generous serves of country food swimming around your mind; and dreams of shopping in the cute township - and perhaps deciding to stay overnight and do the same thing all over again the next day. There’s so much to see and do in the town with its multifaceted array of cute boutiques, cafés, restaurants Don’t forget to try the bakery and bakeries, and of course, the country pub! And throughout the year the town plays host to some great events, a Kenilworth ArtsFest; Cheese, Wine and Food Fest; Sunshine Coast Ukulele Fiesta; Kenilworth Show and Rodeo, Campdraft; Quilt and Craft show and so much more. As I’ve wandered around the township talking to the locals, traders and visitors to the area, one thing has become apparent. The people who come to Kenilworth love the true country feel of a warm welcome, helpful and willing service - and the prospect of one-on-one communication, so lacking in big city shops and venues. It’s no wonder that homes and properties are highly sought-after in the region. Just ask Ron Jeffrey from Ron Jeffrey Realty to spell out all the positives with living in the area. He is an encyclopaedia of useful information and facts. The region is also a drawcard for those looking for a true country experience, with a good selection of B&B’s in the area, as well as natural wonderlands for campers to explore and enjoy. And, for those looking for a ‘farm to plate’ experience. On the edge of the shopping precinct, sits the iconic Kenilworth Dairy, Established in 1950, as one of the many rural chefs factories owned by the Kraft Corporation, until in the late 80s, when Kraft moved to centralisation and closed regional factories. At that time, two employees and a local businessman decided that perhaps some of the workers could buy the

factory. And they did, renaming it to Kenilworth Country Foods, now Kenilworth Dairies. Now, times have changed - new owner but the dairy is still a local attraction for lovers of fine cheeses, yogurts and the like. With an onsite café serving fresh lunches, morning and afternoon teas in the undercover entertaining area and surrounding gardens. Four wheel drivers love the region, as do the ‘real’ motorbike riders who visit the area on a regular basis. Groups of baby boomers visit looking for the good old days - and XY geners looking for a retro break from the high tech world.

up the road offering 4-wheel driving and camping facilities, that have become extremely popular with weekend trekkers and serious drivers. And, just 8 km from Kenilworth, you’ll also find the State Forest that harbours four perfect camping areas. No bookings are required just self registration. 16 km up the road, just below Lake Borumba, is the working Borumba Deer Park, offering a unique family enjoyment and relaxation experience - with friendly hosts. There are modern amenities and BBQ facilities for visitors. In other words, you’ll be glad that I suggested packing that overnight bag, as there’s so much to see and do in and around Kenilworth.

For those looking for a bit of ‘back to nature’ here’s the small town of Imbil just

The Sole of Africa story... The Sunshine Coast is my home now, but I grew up in South Africa not to far from where the Tsonga shoes are made. I’ve worn these beautiful shoes myself for 18 years and loved shopping up a storm every time I went home to South Africa to visit my family. I would buy 4 pairs of shoes, a new bag and some accessories for friends. I came across the Byron Bay Tsonga shop while on holiday in November of 2017, I was in heaven. I bought a pair of shoes and a bag and went home buzzing with excitement for having found what felt like the biggest gift on earth... pure joy!! I’m still not exactly sure how it all happened, but a few months later I opened up my own store in Kenilworth, QLD where I have created a beautiful new home for the Tsonga range and I get to share these unique shoes with everyone that comes to town. The days here in Kenilworth are sunny and slow, which allows me to make my customers a cup of coffee so that we can sit down and talk about shoes, travel, life & everything in between. IF A TREE FALLS…

Bill Dorman: Where Child Meets the Sky

Forests are be big places. Trees fall all the time and they often fall without witness. As the philosophical quandary goes, if there’s no one present to hear the tree as it comes crashing to the ground, it’s questionable as to whether the falling tree makes any sound. The argument is that sound is a quality of sensory perception. Sound happens in our head. When physical disturbances in the air become electrical signals in our brain via sensory organs, these, in turn, are transformed by our brains into perception and experience. But what this dilemma also reminds us is that events in the world only take on meaning when there is someone there to make meaning from them.

I

n September 2015, an ancient tree fell across Eumundi Noosa Road. This 50 meter tall Forest Red Gum was estimated to have taken root at least 250 years ago. It was quite likely much older. When Noosa Shire artist Anne Harris followed the fallen trunk of this ancient tree to the local rubbish dump and made the decision to salvage it rather than watch it be chipped, she gave meaning to this particular occurrence of a tree falling in a forest and in doing so, provided the catalyst for 26 separate creative projects that have been brought together for the exhibition, Tree Place, at Noosa Regional Gallery this summer. Tree Place is the culmination of three years of collaborations, workshops and community exhibitions where stories about trees, people and their connection to environment have been shared. With many of the artists in Tree Place living and working in the region, there is a real sense of connection to, and respect for, the local environment in this collection of works. The projects are various in their medium and form – including sculpture, ceramics, assemblage, installation and a range of other approaches to creative engagement with this venerable piece of wood. Collectively, they ask us to think about our relationship to the landscape, the environment and the living things that make it such a wondrous, thriving and animated space. Artists often make us notice things that we take for granted. We are lucky – in Noosa – to be surrounded by lush landscapes populated by soaring trees. And while they are in our line of site almost every time we step outside, for most of us, we often take for granted the space they occupy in sustaining a healthy planet. We like to think people are what define the planet – that the earth is a place for humanity before it is for anything else. The fact is, some of these trees will outlast each of us. We certainly don’t live to be 250 years old. Noosa, sadly, and its commitment to protecting the natural environment, is an exception rather than the rule. The pressing concerns around climate change brings this sharply into focus. Maybe the question should be, if we make the planet uninhabitable for people and there’s no trees to witness our fall, will we make any sound?

Marc Kalifa arrived in Australia from France in 1974 and survived Cyclone Tracy later that year. He even stayed on working as a jeweller in Darwin, until re-locating to the Sunshine Coast in 1977 to concentrate on creating stained glass (which has the interesting comparison to jewellery of combining metal and coloured glass).

F TOP: “First There is a Mountain…” cast glass on a light box by Marc Kalifa ABOVE “Terra Australis U Vase, hand blown glass by Marc

or nearly a decade Marc worked on pieces from historical monuments to homes, with skill and detail, but then on a study tour in France got the opportunity to blow glass and never looked back, being captivated by this fascinating art form. Marc established his own hot glass studio outside Maleny in 1988 and ever since has been melding the colours of the Australian landscape with classical European forms to wonderful effect. The outback of big skies and spiritual wealth to the misty lush hills of the hinterland have provided much inspiration and he masterfully introduces these tones into vessels, bottles and other art works. Marc is especially known for his Terra Australis and Dreamers series. These evocative scenes are built up with dexterity and experience as well as imagination. Glass blowing is not for the fainthearted. It requires planning, physical strength and great attention to safety when working with molten glass coming out of the crucible at 1200 °C. There are rare second chances if an idea doesn’t work according to plan and only moments within which to make any changes. This can make glass blowing a performance art as well as a visual art. Marc explains, “Making

Art on Cairncross ‘Director’s Choice’ January 5—27

‘In Harmony’ - Dawn Lewis & Tony Lewis March 3—25

Artworks include paintings, ceramics, sculpture, glass, leather masks, steam punk and unique gifts.

“Marc Kalifa removing molten glass from the crucible” glass is for me an alchemical process, where I need to apply my understanding of the fire and the way it transmutes basic raw opaque materials into a translucent medium”. It is apparent from the results that he has mastered this. Over recent years, Marc has created plenty of sculptural pieces and has worked more with cast glass. This requires the same skills in essence, but relies on form and texture to convey the final image. Marc creates his concept in sand within a box frame, into which the molten glass is poured. As “Starlight Dreamers, hand blown it settles, it takes on the design glass with gold leaf by Marc Kalifa” around it and after cooling and being removed from its ‘shell’, the play of light can bring a myriad of images to life. In ‘First There is a Mountain…’ he says “I really like the neat cycle this creates. Over eons of geological time mountains steadily erode and create sand and because glass is made from silica (sand), through the casting process I can make this sand again become a mountain, in artistic form”. Kalifa hand blown glass has been exhibited continuously Australia wide and as far afield as Taiwan, the USA, Singapore and Germany, but Marc’s artistic talents have also been greatly utilized over many years at the Woodford Folk Festival where he built many major props including a 7 metre wide eagle and a 9 metre high lantern, for the fire event. It is interesting to note that again light and fire are involved even in these creations! Please see www.sunshinecoastartgallerytrail.com.au or scan the QR code.

It’s never always a smooth ride Chris says, but perseverance, along with changing with the times - and our amazing new technology, internet & social media etc, have opened so many new doors. Chris last year joined 160 other international artists in London for a 2 day Art Fair. An incredible experience to be part of Chris says. 2 years ago Chris was chosen from the world wide net to help fit out super yachts. He has worked on two substantial vessels (80 & 90m) to date, supplying the original artwork. At present the journey continues for Chris , as he races to complete a new series of works for his two-day Expo in mid January. “Stained Glass Window” Mixed Media - Eric Smith 1919 - 2017

fine art gallery

Understanding Provenance ON SECOND MARKET WORKS At least once a week somebody walks into my gallery, looks at a painting and asks “ what’s the “PROVENCE” (sic) on this‘’? Always polite, I let it pass. Three times a week someone stands in front of a painting and asks “what’s the provenance on this” ? Provenance, the most overworked word in the Art Industry. n 1963 Peter Wilson, CEO of Sotheby’s London decided along with new glossy catalogues and coloured illustrations, he would re introduce, in a major way, the age-old custom of provenance. The practice of listing ownership and history of fine objects previously owned by Royalty, and the titled socially elite. He added a new twist, following on from the old socially elite was to be identifiably added, the goods and chattels of all and sundry, whose name had ever entered the media, in almost any shape or form. He deemed it important that a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe from Hollywood purchased for $300 from Macey’s, should be estimated at ten times an identical dress from Macey’s purchased by Fred the gender-bender from Queens. And lo and behold - the gullible moneyed auction goers agreed. Back to my gallery, when I inform the provenance hunters that around 90% of all paintings and drawings belong to ordinary collectors, who they have almost certainly never heard of, and that most of the original owners are probably deceased, they seem perplexed. When I further explain that provenance has nothing or little to do with authenticity, their brows furrow. In excellent T.V. shows of this century such as ‘ Fake And Fortune’ from the BBC, it can be seen authenticity when finally proven comes from around 50% science from the front of the painting, 25% from the back of the painting, from almost hidden inscriptions, dates etc. Around 25 % from stylistic experts on the painter looking at brush strokes, colour pallet etc, who then combine that with the science and the rear of picture info, and make the needed yes or no decisions . Only on rare occasions does provenance play a part. The program’s presenters rushing around the country hunting provenance adds the drama to the show to entertain the masses. Just as ownership by Monroe, Presley, or Elton John adds drama to an auction, but cannot help prove authenticity, unless a receipt from the artist, or a photo of them receiving the work from the artist, can add to the other authenticity points. For centuries wishy-washy stylistic assessment by academics writing books to floor earlier publications by their peers, have had the say. Thank God, art science, although expensive, is taking over. Recently in a Sotheby’s catalogue, under a lotted painting I saw written. Provenance: purchased by the vendor from Christies in 1986. This of course, is not to any degree a social or exhibition history of the painting. It is possibly its last known public point of sale, and little else, not provenance. Back in the 1920’s when the British nation finally realised the Royal collections were actually owned by the people, and not the Royal family, a cleansing stocktake was undertaken. It was subsequently discovered that several of the Animalier paintings by Queen Victorias favourite animal painter Sir Edwin Landseer RA ,were proven not to be by the hand of the master. They were auctioned off, listed as by a follower of Landseer, with low estimates. Yet they fetched record prices for Sir Edwin. The pictures were wrong but the provenance wonderful, silly but true. Conversely if a magic John Constable had been stolen from the artists easel in 1825, and held for a hundred and fifty years in the worst thieves kitchen in the east end of London, when it finally emerged, it would have dreadful provenance, but still be proven as a great Constable. Remember provenance is not authenticity, it may add considerably to the price you pay, but very little to the authenticity of the item you buy.

a home for the senses... Loving this bold extension to a simple family home, that has added a more appealing presence and stronger street appeal. It proves the point that you don’t always need to give up somewhere you have always been happy, just because you need more space.

A

ny home can become a showstopper with the right renovation - and inclusion of ‘smart’ additions that will create a more family-friendly atmosphere that can quickly become an entertainer’s delight when the party mood takes your fancy. House 9 presented the Three Birds Renovations trio with the challenge of transforming an average sized, Aussie suburban eye-sore, into a glamorous family home. Faced with outdated colours, a flat front and countless hurdles along the way, the ladies had to use every trick in the book to get the job done. What was once one of the most unattractive houses on the street, is now a gorgeous little home that overflows with charisma and street appeal. Check out the makeover and the Luxaflex window covering solutions selected for each specific space.

FRONT OF THE HOME For example, on the front facade, which is the most important focal point for any property, you just can’t go past the charming Luxaflex Awnings that were used to add character and dimension to property.

LIVING ROOM In the all-important Lounge Room, the inclusion of Luxaflex Veri Shades throughout the home was an exciting first for the Three Birds Renovation Team. These blinds were used to dress the doors and windows in the front Lounge Room, Sitting area, Guest Bedroom and Master Suite. A contemporary take on a classic window covering, the Veri Shades combine the versatility of a vertical blind with the elegant appeal of a soft window furnishing. Featuring the premium Luxaflex EDGE Vertical track system and soft sheer fabric, Veri Shades provides the perfect balance of style, durability and child safety features, and was a perfect solution for this gorgeous family home. Another key benefit of Luxaflex Veri Shades is the light control that they offer. The individually curved fabric vanes feature an alternating light filtering, and room darkening fabric panel that can be simply rotated for sheer light control or total privacy. Furthermore, the use of Veri Shades, especially over doors, helps to promote seamless indoor-outdoor living, as you can conveniently walk through the individual fabric vanes whether they are opened or closed. This was ideal for the French doors, particularly those included in the extension, which were designed specifically to open up the space and provide a smooth flow out to the deck.

The White House

Stylish, individual & unique

MAIN BEDROOM The Master Suite was the perfect backdrop for the Luxaflex Veri Shades in the colour ‘Slate’ - chosen to dress the French doors. The bold choice in colour, paired with the soft fabric finish of these shades, worked perfectly with the retro, ‘old school glamour’ style of the room. The ability to walk through these blinds, even when closed, was ideal as the doors opened out onto a private deck.

BATHROOM Luxaflex PolySatin Shutters were the window covering of choice in the master bathroom. A favourite of the Three Birds team, these shutters add a touch of simplistic elegance to any home décor and are undoubtedly the ultimate solution for wet areas, such as bathrooms and laundries. Backed with a 20 year warranty, PolySatin Shutters are impervious to moisture and will not blister, peel or fade, ensuring a quality finish for years to come.

NURSERY When selecting the window covering solution for the nursery, light control and child safety were crucial factors to consider. Luxaflex Duette Shades were recommended for the nursery and certainly proved to be the perfect solution for the space. The Duette fabric in blockout opacity provides complete room darkening and zero view-through when closed, creating the ideal environment for a baby to sleep, even during the day. The pleated fabric design of these shades also means they can be stacked tightly up into the head rail to allow light through when open, ready for play time! The ‘Top-Down/Bottom-Up’ style of these shades also provides complete versatility, allowing the shades to be open from the top, from the bottom or anywhere in between, for the perfect balance of light and privacy. HOW TO CREATE A MEDITATION SPACE AT HOME The idea of home as sanctuary has never been more precious than now as we enter the busiest time of the year. When the festive season hits, it’s all too easy for stress and anxiety to shadow us in the form of little sleep, demanding schedules, and financial strain.

quiet corner you can dedicate solely to be your meditation area.

2. Find an object that speaks to you Introduce an item to your space you can focus on without distraction. Keep it limited to one, and consider something that speaks to a sense of the sacred and spiritual (if that’s your thing).

3. Welcome nature Turn to the four elements for contemplation. Represent earth with a crystal or plant, air with incense, fire with candle, or water by adding it to a beautiful ceramic bowl.

O

ne way to keep check of your stress is with meditation. Since the mind is the root cause of stress, it makes sense to direct our attention here, and meditation has a more powerful beneficial effect on the mind than any other known activity. According to Bala Meditation founder and qualified meditation instructor, Belinda Crestani (DipBSoM), meditation slows life down and teaches us to be grateful of life’s moments. ‘Meditation is so simple that anyone can do it. It’s also very natural – it requires no drugs or equipment and costs nothing.’ The beauty of meditation is that it can be practised wherever and whenever you feel the need to create a quiet moment. While it’s not necessary to establish a special room to meditate, there are benefits from having a regular spot at home for it. ‘Having a dedicated meditation space helps you to establish a routine and break the initial resistance most people have to sitting still and staying silent for more than a

few minutes,’ says Crestani. Not all areas at home are ideal for meditation. ‘One of the main problems I see when someone is developing a meditation space at home is that they choose a place that has a lot of foot traffic such as the living room, instead; pick a space with an adjoining door you can close, or an area where you feel like you won’t be faced with too many disruptions,’ she adds.

Perfect your meditation space at home with this essential checklist: 1. Spend time de-cluttering The goal of meditation is to gain heightened concentration and total absorption in a single idea or object, a feat that will be tricky to achieve in a room that is cluttered. Assign yourself a clean and

The best meditation space is clutter-free, clean, cosy, beautiful and private. 4. Make your zone safe If you are using candles, always make sure they are secure and in a place where they won’t be knocked over.

5. Consider comfort Your meditation room needs to be comfortably warm and well aired, particularly if you are using candles or incense, which use up oxygen and can leave you feeling tired. Prop yourself up on a cushion or keep something soft close by to lay down on if you feel the need.

6. Infuse a soft sound Wind chimes, soothing music or natural sounds can help create a beautiful atmosphere for you to meditate in. If you opt for music or pre-recorded visualisations, be sure to vary them from time to time to prevent being tied to one particular theme or exercise for too long.

Outdoors ENJOYING THE GREAT OUTDOORS

“Just to prove how hardy the beautiful Frangipani tree is... even I can grow them!” Frangipanis always make me think of Hawaii and Elvis Presley singing in Blue Hawaii . Of course, they do come from tropical regions, so it’s no surprise that they perform best in the tropics and sub-tropics. Lucky Queenslanders.

T

he Frangipani is a small tree with richly fragrant flowers, that appear in the warmer seasons. The most common flowers are white with a yellow centre, but there are also vibrant pinks, yellows, pink-yellow-orange mixes (often called fruit salad) and dark shades of deep mahogany. Some reds are so dark they’re sometimes described as black. With age, the plants develop a broad, spreading crown, with the branching often starting just above ground level. If protected from cold winds and frost, they will can also grow well, although more slowly, in cooler States. Whether grown in the ground or in big pots, to create a resort style feel in your garden; no Balinese or modern coastal garden is complete without a Frangipani or three. The trees grow best against sunny walls, providing cooling summer shade, while letting winter sun flow through. It can also be a real problem solver, as it will thrive in sandy soil that many plants can’t handle. And if you only have a balcony, you can still have a Frangipani. They can do very well in large pots and planters too. Frangipani is a very easy-care plant. If conditions are dry in the warmer months, water the plant as the leaves and flowers are developing. Avoid watering your tree while it is dormant (leafless). Fertilising isn’t necessary, but will improve performance. Apply a controlled-release fertiliser around the edge of the canopy line in late spring or early summer.

r e w o l F The . . . s c i p o r t e of th

Occasionally, you may need to prune your tree to restrict size, tidy a broken branch, or to remove an inconvenient branch. On older trees, look for any branches that have started rubbing or crossing over, or have stopped producing foliage or flowers, and remove them. Frangipani grows very easily from cuttings. Your cutting should be a growth tip at least 10–15cm long. Ensure the cutting is cleanly cut, not crushed and put it somewhere warm and shady until the sap seals. Once dry, fill a suitable-sized pot with a free-draining potting or propagating mix. Put the cutting in and support it if required. Put it in a warm spot and only water when dry. You can grow a new plant from even very large cuttings, if you ensure they have adequate support as they grow. That said, I should say that I have cuttings that are now almost tree size, growing in my fish pond. I was going to plant them out about 18 months ago. Go figger. These images are from my Frangipani trees. Words: Kaylene Murray

The top four tips for saving water in your garden: 1. Beat the heat Plants absorb water through their roots, so it makes sense to deliver the water as close to the root zone as possible. Watering wands with a long handle allow you to easily hold the spray down low, to deliver water efficiently to where it’s need most. And be sure to water early in the morning before the sun heats up to reduce water loss to evaporation.

2. Making the most of valuable rain water. 3. Checking hose fittings 4. Reuse/reduce waste Finally, grey water hoses allow efficient watering by reusing the wastewater from showers or washing machines on your garden. The hoses are easily connected to household appliances to drain grey water from the machine to buckets or directly into your garden. Just be sure to use plant-friendly detergents and powders. s n o i t a c o l g n i r a e p p a s Di Four places around the Globe to visit before they disappear... Some of the world’s most beautiful destinations - from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, to the once vast ice glaciers of the Rocky Mountains - are under threat of extinction. If no urgent measures are taken against global warming, time will soon run out for some of the most unique places on earth. Smart Lemur, a travel site that offers smart travel advice, has selected a list of destinations to see before they disappear altogether:

#1: French Polynesia, Pacific Ocean French Polynesia is made up of 118 dispersed islands and atolls, covering an area of more than 2,000 kilometers in the South Pacific Ocean, including the islands of Bora Bora, Tahiti and Kiribati. This extremely popular tropical tourist destination is under extreme pressure from rising sea levels, and it’s predicted that the majority of the low-lying islands will disappear altogether by the end of the century.

116

NoosaStyleLiving

#2: Venice, Italy Venice, a city in north-eastern Italy, celebrated for its contributions to art and architecture, is situated across a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. In October of 2018, storms hit the area and a reported 75% of the city was underwater, with many tourist destinations closed, or unreachable. Venice, one of the most unique and romantic destinations on earth, might soon be underwater - and sites such as St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Grand Canal, and the Piazza San Marco could soon be gone forever.

#3: Glacier National Park, Montana The Glacier National Park in Montana Rocky Mountains, north-western USA, has long provided visitors with breathtaking scenery, trekking opportunities, and an all-round retreat; but one natural feature is under real threat from rising temperatures. The park, dubbed the ‘Crown of the Continent,’ is losing its glaciers, with only 25 of the original 150 left intact. The park has been fighting a losing battle - and is now resided to the fact that it’s too late to save the remaining glaciers, with scientists predicting them to be gone completely by 2030.

#4: The Maldives, Indian Ocean The Maldives, rising just 1.8m above the Indian Ocean south-west of India, is officially the lowest country on earth. A favourite with honeymooners, eco tourists and backpackers, this collection of 1,192 coral islands offers visitors a real taste of paradise on earth; but is in serious risk of being washed away by rising sea levels. If the effects of global warming can’t be slowed in the near future, the Maldives will incur serious reef damage and land erosion, and it’s predicted that it could disappear altogether by the end of the century.

Saving the Dingo... Fraser Island is well known for its high numbers of dingoes, but the Sunshine Coast hinterlands have also provided a home for dingo families for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

W

hile you can still find dingos across the Sunshine Coast, numbers have dropped vastly, as a result of active poisoning to kill one of Australia’s most iconic animals. “The numbers of dingoes here, in South East Queensland, has vastly dropped to extremely few numbers,” says Marie-Louise Sarjeant, owner operator of Connect 2 Wildlife 4 Environment. “There is still the occasional sighting, which is encouraging. Dingoes were frequently seen not only in the Hinterland but near Mt Emu towards Coolum to Mt Timbeerwah in Tewantin, and right up the coastal district. “Not now sadly.” According to Ms Sarjeant, that’s because of twice yearly drops of what’s known as 1080 poison baiting, which she says is neither humane nor painless. “Because they are listed as a pest under Queensland law - and are not protected, they can be killed legally by any cruel method. “If they were listed as a native species, as they should be, there would be better protection for these beautiful iconic Australian, unique animals.” As well as being simply sad, the loss of dingo numbers also impacts the environment and ecosystem. “Dingoes play a very important role, as all apex predators do, in the environment to balance the ecosystem. “Extinction of dingoes can therefore have detrimental effects on the balance and health of Australia’s biodiversity. “They are a natural pest management 24/7 - as they are a predator for wild cats and foxes, who keep well out of their way. “So leaving the dingoes in an area that needs to keep the health and balance of native species is essential. “The saddest part is that dingoes are being wiped out in areas, where they work well with nature, acting as they should in the environment as our only apex predator.” Ms Sarjeant says she’s hoping for a more compassionate conversation around the management of dingo numbers. “There is now a massive campaign to wipe-out dingoes using 1080 - a chemically manufactured artificial Super Toxin - especially targeting the sensitive biosphere on the Sunshine Coast. “There clearly needs to be a paradigm shift in our approach to conservation and threatened species recovery, the dingo offers the best way forward for biodiversity management - that is cost-effective, sustainable - and ethical. “I would like to see larger hectare tracks of protected land created for the dingoes by conservationists or environmental government departments. “Even hybrid dingoes can perform the role of apex predator with the dingo genetics coming through. “The dingo is unique to Australia. It is a special animal and deserves to be protected. www.facebook.com/Connect2WildLife4environment

reversible electric motor for your

aston martin With interest in classic cars growing every year and values of heritage models at all-time high, Aston Martin Lagonda has pioneered a bold new plan: to future-proof these increasingly precious machines by creating the world’s first reversible EV powertrain conversion.

Rapide E and future planning of the all-new range of Lagondas, the Aston Martin Works’ Heritage EV conversion employs state-ofthe-art thinking and technology. Production versions of the revolutionary EV cassette will include key components from the Rapide E programme.

sympathetic to the integrity of the original car. The cassette system offers the perfect solution, offering owners the reassurance of knowing their car is future-proofed and socially responsible, yet still an authentic Aston Martin with the ability to reinstate its original powertrain if desired.

onceived as an integral part of the company’s wider EV strategy, the Heritage electrification concept has been led by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell. Developed around a so-called “cassette” EV powertrain, the objective is to mitigate any future legislation to restrict the use of classic cars by offering a zero emissions conversion.

The first car to receive the radical new EV powertrain is an original 1970 DB6 MkII Volante, which would have been originally hand-crafted at Newport Pagnell. Sitting on the original engine and gearbox mountings, the cassette is enclosed within its own selfcontained cell. Umbilical cords from the power unit then feed the car’s electrical systems. Power management is operated via a dedicated screen, which is discreetly fitted to the car’s interior.

Having handled the initial concept evaluation and build of the proof-of-concept DB6 Volante, Aston Martin Works will also be responsible for completing customer Heritage EV conversions, which are expected to commence in 2019.

On the river NOOSAVILLE - SHOP - EAT - CRUISE

F

rom sunrise to sunset along the park that runs adjacent to the Noosa River (known as the ‘golden mile’) you’ll see a passing parade of people walking their dogs, others taking the time to amble along watching the boats as they motor or sail past; devotees of tai chi and yoga carefully going through their movements; and others enjoying a quiet cup of coffee with friends; while mothers and holiday makers take their little ones for a walk or ride under the bowers of towering trees. Along the foreshore, helpful information centre staff will book tours for you to visit Fraser Island (the world’s largest sand island, and home to Australia’s purest dingos), as well as trips to the mystical Everglades, or themed cruises. With playgrounds and exercise equipment, as well as electric barbecues, and

covered table and bench seating positioned around the area, it is the perfect place for a family get together. The carefree nature of the area is mirrored by the gentle wings of the pelicans as they soar high above before coasting in to the shoreline in search of the prime position for sleeping or checking out the chance of catching a fish down below; as those wishing to spend some time on the water hire kayaks, paddle boards, small boats and pontoons from the local boat shed operators. If not so inclined, you can still enjoy the river by hopping aboard the ferry for a leisurely cruise. All this and only 10 minutes drive from Hastings Street. What are you waiting for?

The Last Word COMMENTS FROM KEITH JACKSON

I

LIKE traffic lights / I like traffic lights / I like traffic lights / No matter where they’ve been’ went the lyrics of a Monty Python song that had fleeting fame in 1980. But it was never popular in Noosa, where – no matter how unsafe or congested an intersection may be – a ‘no traffic lights’ policy was implemented by former mayor Noel Playford, who now lives in heavily red, green and ambered Brisbane. But his brainwave continues to dominate more prudent considerations of safety. For Noosa, there’s no ‘Twinkle twinkle traffic light / On the corner shining bright / Red means Stop / Green means Go / Yellow means Drive very slow’. None whatsoever.

ON THE subject of hazards while driving, your correspondent was delighted to learn that the authorities recently acted to protect our local leash of deer (yes, leash is a whole bunch of the exquisite creatures) in an effort to save them from the threat posed by fast-moving vehicles on one of our main roads. I hope Bambi and others of his ilk (or elk) appreciate the thought that went into reducing the speed limit from 100 to 90 kph, at which velocity I reliably understand stopping distance is reduced from 98 to 83 metres on a dry road. But spot a deer in your lights at less than 83 metres and I’m afraid Bambi gets it.

NOOSA is booming with well over two million visitors a year pumping money into the economy through tourism and a property boom that’s going gangbusters. The town has the most expensive units in Queensland and boasts one of the most highly priced housing markets. Property prices in Sydney and Melbourne are in steep decline and Brisbane remains flat. Meanwhile Noosa has delivered the strongest performance in Queensland over the past 12 months, growing at nearly

seven percent with a median house price of about $700,000. And demand is forecast to further strengthen, with real estate agents scratching around for new listings. “Supply is quite limited,” says Real Estate Institute CEO, Antonia Mercorella. “The demand is always strong because it’s such a special place. It’s clearly now the state’s most prestigious property market.” LIKE rust, the Noosa River never sleeps.

One big storm could mean environmental and commercial misfortune. Noosa Spit, home to the popular walking tracks of Noosa Woods, was constructed some 40 years ago when the mouth of the river, which boggled around for millennia, was artificially contained to a northern course to create more land for development. As John Lobb wrote in the Open Noosa website, “Life since then has been a constant battle between the forces of Nature and the ambitions of Man. It’s a struggle Nature seems to be winning.” Noosa Spit is experiencing serious erosion, losing 50 metres over the past three years and exposing Noosa Sound residential properties to risk should the river break

through. That’s a cool $250 million of real estate. If the river breaches the Spit, it could mean a dire outcome for property owners and the perfection known as ‘the Noosa brand’.

INTERNECINE warfare has broken out at Peregian Beach where agitated local denizens are engaged in a campaign of vituperation against their neighbours at Peregian Breeze (four minutes away) and Peregian Springs (eight minutes) – who have the dumb luck of living outside Noosa Shire. These unwelcome cross-border dwellers, to whom the romantic Peregian patois is a foreign language, assemble in Latin American style ‘caravans’ to invade shops, beaches and, more importantly, car parks in Peregian-By-Sea. The chauvinistic Peregians are spitting so many chips local seagulls have been put on the Atkins diet. Offers by the hinterland tribes to smoke the pipe of peace have only further enraged their coastal cousins (many times removed) into writing a torrent of infuriated letters to editors, the rest of Australia’s apprehension about a Chinese incursion paling into paltriness. OUTDOORS at sundown, at the invitation of my friends Bettina and Desiré, I was staring at a small watercourse surrounded by a tangle of bush and awaiting the arrival of glossy black cockatoos – a rare species that comes to this particular spot each year to feast on new fruit offered in the old Wallum habitat. The mosquitoes had arrived previously. The protection of this stretch of otherwise nondescript bush has become urgent since an old folks home emerged to grab a chunk of surrounding land. The birds eventually arrived to drink and eat in an impressive squawking, chortling flurry of crimson and black. I hope Blue Care and the conservationists reach an agreement to ensure they continue to thrive.
