Complete Score - Performed Live with Film

The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers

The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers in concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra

O

n Saturday 5th October, Brisbane will host a truly magnificent orchestral film event, The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers in concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the stars at Brisbane’s Riverstage. It will be amazing … imagine Peter Jackson’s epic film on the big screen with Academy Award winner Howard Shore’s score performed live by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Justin Freer, with incredible soloist Kaitlyn Lusk (who has been the featured vocal soloist in this role with over 25 orchestras around the world) and the Brisbane Birralee Voices directed by Julie Christiansen, in the natural open amphitheatre under the stars on an October evening at the Brisbane Riverstage.

Following sold-out performances for the first instalment of this incredible orchestral-film experience, The Fellowship of the Ring in 2012, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, like Peter Jackson, was compelled to continue the journey – with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. According to Doug Adams, the Chicago-based musician and writer and author of the book The Music of the Lord of the Rings, Shore’s work is extraordinary. “The music of The Lord of the Rings is counted among film music’s most complex and comprehensive works. This unique performance sets the score to the film, but allows the music to bear the narrative weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic live concert experience.”

One Show Only There is one show only Saturday 5th October at 6.30pm. Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster on 136 100 or www.ticketmaster.com.au There is more at www.qso.com.au

this issue What do 2 million Australians have in common? Anxiety symptoms they don’t recognise.

ll through summer I fantasise about the cooler months to come; of snuggling up under a warm blanket while reading a good book and sipping a large glass of rich red wine, luscious muscat, tantalising port - or mug of hot chocolate with fluffy marshmallows on top. Of course, when the cold weather does come around, I once again dream of sitting under a palm tree sipping a mango daiquiri or watermelon martini. Oh how shallow I am! Luckily I live in 'paradise' so I don't really have too much to complain about. Southern visitors have always known that the Sunshine Coast is a fabulous winter escape but if you're a local you can enjoy these pleasures all the time. A morning walk along the beachfront savouring the warming sun on your face; a drive out into the hinterland, or perhaps a weekend away on the Blackall Range, where nature and nurture abound. Why not take advantage of the exceptional accommodation deals available this season, and enjoy a well-earned break away from the every day. It's time to play tourist. Noosa is regarded as a 'foodies paradise' so

oy Morgan research shows that in the last 12 months the condition has grown by almost 40% in the last four years. The research showed 13.8%, an estimated 2.44 million Australians, experienced an anxiety condition in the year to December 2012, compared to 9.9% in 2008. Beyondblue Chairman The Hon. Jeff Kennett AC said despite the high prevalence rate, most Australians are unable to recognise anxiety symptoms and so don’t get help because they do not know they are experiencing a treatable condition. “Anxiety is even more common than depression with one in four Australians experiencing an anxiety condition at some stage in their lives,” he said. “But while the Roy Morgan data tells us anxiety conditions are a growing problem, separate beyondblue research shows only 12% of Australians view anxiety as a major mental health problem, compared with

Open Enclosure for baby orphan Orang-utans built in Borneo‌

A

ustralia's The Orangutan Project has built a brand new enclosure for young rescued orang-utans recently, at the Ketapang Rescue Centre in Borneo, Indonesia. The new enclosure will allow young rescued orphan orangutans to roam safely in the trees within

the centre's enclosure, providing them with more freedom and independence whilst they are rehabilitated to one day return to the wild. The first 20 orphans have now been moved into the 'New Baby' enclosure and are doing extremely well. The young orang-utans at the centre were previously kept in smaller enclosures and cared for until they were deemed suitable for release into the wild. Thanks to the new open enclosure, they now have more space

abrics, colours, prints and Indian culture have always inspired Dui Cameron whose earliest foray into the fashion world was transforming traditional Indian saris into elegant one-off western style pieces then selling the oneoffs to foreigners at markets in Goa, where the saris had originated. India was in the Aussie girl’s soul and she wasted no time embracing the country wholeheartedly. Dui had previously lived in Thailand. where she was excited by the hustle and bustle of Bangkok also Japan where she admired its design attributes. “It runs through from clothing such as the kimono to fashion designer Issey Miyake, temples, Zen gardens and even paper,” elucidates Dui who shares an infatuation with other cultures appreciating the beauty in people, no matter how rich or poor with her elder sister Sally, a consultant with the United Nations. “Think origami and how Japanese kids are so adept at cutting, gluing, folding and drawing. I also love the street culture and the quirkiness, from those mad Harajuku girls to the glue used to hold up those big baggy socks that were fashionable when I was there. I made great friends in both places and we still meet up from time to time. Naturally I loved the food too and can’t go past tom kha gai and agadashi tofu.” Dui and her son Charlie10, spend about six months every year in India at a farm house built on land she acquired about six years ago. “It is in the state of Rajasthan in a town called Pushkar. It’s a beautiful tropical paradise in the

desert and quite breathtaking. We have a dog called Daisy and two cats Pippa and Minnie. We built a smaller house at the front of the land for our beautiful Indian family who look after everything when we’re not there. They are part of our family now. Charlie, who’s very funny has grown up in India where he’s gone to school and Australia where he’s now studying. Everyone in our small town in India knows Charlie.” Fashion label Boom Shankar, (Indian for ‘to bless’) started with Dui selling her tops from a small stall at the Eumundi Markets. Fifteen years later it’s defied trends, challenging times and is a national success story. Juggling the business, community projects, school and two homes however can be tricky. Dui acknowledges “we just do it. “The community projects we’re involved in are a large part of our business,” says Dui who has chosen a remote community on the Pakistan border.“I feel it’s important to give back to the communities where we manufacture so lots of projects have been in India.” “I give them fabrics for each collection and they do feature hand stitching and embroidery on these pieces. The village is really isolated – they are Pakistani refugees and live in very basic conditions. This work gives them their only income. “We’ve also done a great calendar to fundraise for the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. In addition I’m passionate about animal welfare and support a local Indian charity that vaccinates street dogs. Boom Shankar’s success has enabled me to really make a difference.” No matter the place or time, Dui never stops. Currently photography and co-ordination of the Boom Shankar summer photo shoot and 2013/14 catalogue plus the renovation of the Gabriel Poole-designed house at Peregian Beach, she bought last September, are parallel projects “The architecture is sophisticated but looks simple,” says Dui who’s adding a pool deck and is determined to put her own stamp on the makeover so it feels like home. “I love Poole's use of pavilions, sense of scale, the clean lines, high ceilings and strategies to maximise airflow and natural light. The interior is colourful, eclectic and warm.” Collecting bits and bobs has turned into a passion. From retro furniture to plastic cars, dolls, magpie carvings and shells are everywhere in shadow boxes and nooks. She says she’s a “mad collector, but that’s another story. They don’t call me ‘trinket girl’ for nothing!” Dui has no plans to stop travelling – ever. “It’s in my blood and I love it, although perhaps with a little more down time to enjoy family, friends, the natural beauty of my surrounds, maybe a massage and then more travel,” concludes the sometimes fiery Aries, who’s 39 but feels 21.

PETER LIK MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER

Photography. Love it! And I’m glad to share that feeling with you.

Top: ‘Enchantment’ - Above: ‘River of Zen’ - Peter Lik

L

ik’s journey had humble origins. Born in Melbourne, Australia, to Czech immigrants, it was his parents’ gift of a Kodak Brownie camera on his eighth birthday that set young Peter’s course. Entirely self-taught, Lik worked hard at his craft before making a life-changing decision: to go to the United States in 1984. A chance meeting with a fellow photographer in Alaska became a defining moment in Peter Lik’s life. He was introduced to the medium format panoramic camera and given the advice “Go big or go home.” Lik did both. He returned to Australia to photograph the vastness of the Great South Land. Peter then went on to open his own fine art publishing company as well as his first gallery in his adopted hometown of Cairns. He returned to the States in 1989 for another jaunt before undertaking a mammoth trip early in the new millennium to photograph landscapes of all 50 states. Fifty thousand miles and 1,000 rolls of film later, the “biggest challenge of my life” was completed. Highlights of Peter’s American odyssey can be found in his book “Spirit of America.” Lik’s stature as a photographer has been indisputably confirmed with his receipt of the award

of Master Photographer from both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He has also been awarded fellowships by the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) and The Royal Photographic Society (RPS). Now based in Las Vegas, where he oversees his company LIK USA™, Lik’s career continues to boom. He has sold in excess of $300 million of fine art photography, has 14 galleries of his own and counts presidents and celebrities among his many collectors. Early 2011 saw two more landmarks for Lik when he sold his photograph “One,” taken on the banks of the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire, for $1 million, and had his classic image “Ghost” included in an exhibition of Nature’s Best Photography in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Lik’s masterworks include “Ancient Spirit,” “Sacred Sunrise,” “Angel’s Heart,” “Tree of Life” and the highly acclaimed “Ghost.” Each Limited Edition release is greeted with great enthusiasm by collectors and this has been reflected in recent record-breaking sales. Now at the top of his game, Peter Lik is “loving it!” at full throttle and the animated Aussie is showing no signs of slowing down.

Well I am!... I was once classed as a 'white knuckle' passenger by a flight attendant; and over the years I have improved somewhat - but not to an extent that I could say that I actually like flying. If the plane experiences any turbulence en route to my destination - look out!

A

ll bets are off and I start to perspire and pray quietly, whilst desperately counting down the minutes to touchdown! So, when I was given the opportunity to test out, the new Fear of Flying course in Brisbane recently, I was eager to agree. And, as the flight education session was run by Qantas Check Captain David Evans, who was supervising Check Captain onboard Qantas Flight 32 – the infamous passenger flight that suffered an engine failure on November 4, 2010, and subsequently made an emergency landing at Changi Airport in Singapore. Well - I couldn't have been in better hands. Aviophobia, the fear of flying - can can take on many forms, from just a little anxiety to an incapacitating fear, and affects up to 25% of Australians. This often ruins family holidays and business opportunities that require travel by plane. Treating Aviophobia is the goal of a brand new Fear of Flying course launched nationwide by Flight Experience. Flight Experience has been operating since 2005, after taking off in New Zealand, and has quickly become a global leader in terms of flight simulation entertainment. The company has flown over 120,000 satisfied clients over the past eight years, and is now an international franchise offering amazing sensory experiences for consumers and CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) approved pilot training. Their latest project, ‘Fear of Flying’ helps people to overcome their fear of flying and make air travel bearable - even enjoyable. The unique course is designed over four stages, with each stage supervised by a psychologist, an airline pilot or a qualified Flight Experience instructor. Stage 1 – Psychological Session: A face to face consultation with a trained psychologist to identify the causes of fear and plan the most successful treatment process. Stage 2 – Flight Education: Interactive learning sessions with a professional airline pilot outlines the stringent safeguards that have been put in place to make plane travel safer than any other modes of transport. Stage 3 – Facing Your Fears: Further sessions with the psychologist to help mentally prepare participants to face their flying fears. This includes the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) strategies – a way of challenging participants’ thinking style and behaviour around flying. Stage 4 – Simulator Sessions: A Qualified Flight Experience Instructor takes participants on the ‘flight-deck’, where they get to choose whether to observe or pilot the aircraft as a way to practice their new CBT skills. "The course is designed to be tailored to every client, ensuring we address each person’s specific fears,” says Julian D’Arcy, Flight Experience’s Head of Flight Operations. “Using the Flight Simulator gives enormous insight into what happens in the cockpit of a commercial airliner, which has proven highly successful for those conquering their fears and flying with confidence." For more information go to www.flightexperience.com.au. The course is available in both individual ($1,495) and group ($750) sessions.

Another crowd pleaser will be Monica Trapaga, known for her work on the television series Play School but also as an accomplished jazz singer, actress and author. Who can forget her as the femme fatale role in the 1940’s Pardon Me Boys, alongside her brother, the notorious ex-punk rocker Ignatius Jones. With a genuine love of jazz, Monica formed Monica and the Moochers and released two Arianominated jazz albums. If music is a celebration of life, Australian musician-producer Ant Aggs’ life has been one big neverending party. He has toured with musicians and bands such as Tony Royster Jr, Afro Dizzi Act and Resin Dogs and these days leads his own trio, performs original material as well as music from Miles Davis, Sting, John Lennon, Donny Hathaway and more. This year’s festival begins with concerts on the Main Stage in the Festival Village and continues with events at various venues. The introduction of new Festival Season Ticket will enable patrons to access all shows on the Main Stage as well as participation in a Masterclass series with headlining artists. The Festival, which began as a community event 22 years ago would not be complete without the original Noosa long lunch, Tastings on Hastings, when the sophisticated boulevarde is turned into a pop-up restaurant for 500 guests, who are wined, dined and entertained by roving jazz musicians and buskers. King of Jazz James Morrison‘s love of Noosa is undeniable. He is always wowed being able to play jazz in the intimate surrounds and appropriate setting of berardo’s restaurant and bar. His dates have corresponded with the Noosa Jazz Festival since 1999 and this year is no exception. His band includes Gordon Rytmeister (drums) Phillip Stack (Bass) James Muller (Guitar) plus of course the inimitable Emma Pask, fresh from The Voice will perform. Who can forget her rendition of Sergio Mendes’ Mas Que Nada, which had the judges out of their seats and her coach Latino bon bon shaker Ricky revealing ''I'm going to throw a bomb right now…I am recording a Brazilian album and I would love for you to be a part of it.'' Will Noosa experience a little Viva la Vida Loca too? The Noosa Jazz Festival runs from Thursday 29 August to Sunday 1 September. Push for health and happiness.. Noosa River Smoked Trout Salad with Pomegranate, Avocado and Coriander Salad

Down-to-earth Rebecca Mugridge shoots the breeze with Helen Flanagan about a Guinness World record attempt and her wholehearted zest for life.

F

airies live at the bottom of every little girl’s garden except for Rebecca Mugridge, who couldn’t find any in the lush vegetable patch or amongst the massive floral displays of her parent’s house in rural Western Australia. With four generations of professional cooks and passionate foodies it seemed like Rebecca would follow the same garden path to the kitchen where she often became totally absorbed by the aromas of baking and helping her mother chop, mix and of course taste. Along the way her writing was recognised and aged 11, a story was published in a newspaper; her keen interest in nature was inspired by the Bush Tucker Man and David Attenborough; and inevitably making a final career choice proved a dilemma. Horticulture and her green thumb finally won out. “I worked and supported myself through studies and some days had to walk over 8kms to get to the TAFE farm,” recalls Rebecca who lives in Maleny. “Food and gardening have always been my first loves. I worked in a fish and chip shop at 14 and also washed dishes in a restaurant, but my favourite job was running the plant section at a Bunnings Warehouse. I started a garden club, shared my passion for plants on radio and with the general public at displays and events. “When I had a big garden in Bundaberg, I gave fresh produce to the neighbours and the same happens today only the land is smaller. Nothing beats seeing my kids Lily 7 and Violet 2½ picking and eating fresh, healthy vegetables straight from the garden. Favourites are organic kale, spinach, kang kong, silverbeet, Asian greens, lettuce and snow peas; herbs such as coriander, basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary and mint; heirloom varieties of vegetables; strawberries in hanging baskets; and growing herbs amongst the flower beds. “Incorporating edible plants into the average home garden shows off how beautiful they are and don’t have to be grown in a patch down the back. “It’s also fortunate having community gardens, schools and day care centres with gardens too, so making growing food is more accessible and fun for everyone.” Life wasn’t always healthy and happy for Rebecca who constantly battled weight and selfesteem issues. But thanks to elder daughter Lily she turned her life around. “Knowing this little person had to look up and learn from me was a huge sense of responsibility and the strongest motivation ever,” extols the 33-year old single mum. “The best way to teach her to live a healthy, happy life was to lead by example. “I started growing food, exercising every day, taking Lily with me in the pram, looking into the foods I was eating and preparing and adapting

them, so they were healthier but just as tasty. “For many years I thought you had to starve yourself and follow diet fads to be slimmer and look good, especially in my teen years when it was all about being as thin as possible at all costs. I even took up smoking. It was all about being a certain dress size. My health suffered from yo-yoing. I went from very underweight to very overweight then back and forth for years. Later I realised the best I’ve ever looked was when I was exercising and eating well every day. “I lost 30 kilos after my first baby and kept it off for five years then 22 kilos after my second, but it was the 15 kilos gained through stress that were the hardest to lose. Our emotions are tied to our weight and can affect our health and happiness. Balance is the key. And it’s OK to want chocolate especially if it’s organic, dark or Noosa Natural’s gorgeous chocolate-covered goji berries.” Pushing a pram was integral to Rebecca’s health regime. It spawned the Pram Diet book, received extraordinary media coverage as did The Pink Pram Push a charity event for breast cancer, and attempt at the Guinness World record. “I created the event with fellow mum Lara Hodgson,” says Rebecca, who garnered the support of 200 mums, the local IGA, media and the Prime Minister Julia Gillard, whose opening speech was delivered by Senator Claire Moore. “It was so humbling. As the author of The Pram Diet, I am a huge advocate of pram walking and pram running for health and fitness. Kids get used to the active time each day and see it as normal even when I progress them to push trike, walking with me and riding a bike. Pram walking got me through post natal depression and was the highlight of each day. And what a great stepping stone to staying fit, perhaps joining a gym or taking up sport.” Rebecca’s passion for food extends beyond her diet book to demonstrations, recipe creation, cooking classes, presenter/speaker, blogging, horticulture and photography. “I support and promote local producers, teach people how to create healthy, delicious food for all the family and encourage families to grow food. I get excited about real food, fresh ingredients, amazing produce and seeing kids experience the joy of growing, cooking and eating it. “I want to be a great role model to my girls and am inspired by my mother who was also a single mum and like my stepmother, aunt, grandmothers and great grandmothers, such a strong, talented woman. “Remember to always go forward positively even if you do have setbacks. It’s important to forgive yourself, remember noone is perfect, let go of any negative thoughts and move on. Yes, even if you’ve gained weight, been stress eating or stopped exercising. Today is a new day, so start with a fresh attitude and learn to smile in the mirror again. I know what it’s like because I’ve been there,” concludes Rebecca whose new Healthy Happy Mums book will be on the shelves soon. Three children’s picture books about the wonders of an edible garden, trees and their forms and Bernie the Bush Turkey plus a novel are words and work in progress. This Wonder Mum is unstoppable.

ashionista or not, find out for yourself during International Fashion Week, the premier fashion show on the local calendar. It was created in 2008 as the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival by Jacinta Richmond who sought to provide an all-inclusive and affordable forum for emerging designers to showcase alongside established designers, whilst garnering the attention of the public, buyers, agents and the fashion media. Plus, it opened the doors to a global forum for local talent that was never previously affordable or available to emerging or even established labels on the Sunshine Coast and nationally. The role of director for this year’s International Fashion Week from 12 to 14 September has been passed to Courtney Thorpe. Jacinta said it was time to let go however she has set up a dynamic and professional team to support the International Fashion Week going forward. “Courtney Thorpe, with a background in modelling, styling, event coordination and media is an excellent fit for the role,” says Jacinta adding Courtney was also a finalist in Miss Universe Australia 2013 and is no stranger to hard work, dedication and the sustainability of standards. This year’s event, hosted by Palmer Coolum Resort, will showcase local, national and international labels in a range of shows including Swim, Indigenous, Ethical Design, Ready to Wear and Couture. Health benefits by Cassandra Carlopio

Psychologist, BSocSc(Psych)(Hons), MPsych(Clinical)

The popularity of yoga is growing day by day. Celebrities such as Jennifer Anniston, Madonna, Sting, Matthew McCongaughey and Miranda Kerr are often snapped with a yoga matt under their arm, and it is socially acceptable to wear yoga clothes almost anywhere.

N

iche yoga for target audiences are becoming prominent, such as yoga for men, yoga for war veterans, yoga for mums and bubs, yoga for professional athletes, yoga for children. Research is catching up with popularity of the yoga practice with the health benefits of downward dog and other animal poses becoming apparent in medical journals. And while most people associate yoga with strengthening and toning, less is commonly known about the other aspects of this ancient practice. Yoga originated in India centuries ago. The term 'yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj' which means to join or unite. This union is often interpreted as an individual uniting with Cosmic Consciousness or the Universal Spirit. In other words, yoga can be seen as a way to become aware of ones deepest nature, rather than identifying with the limitations of the body, mind, and senses. While there are differences in semantics depending on what school of yoga you choose to explore, one common understanding of yoga outlines eight limbs of yoga: Yama or Ahima (non-violence); Niyama (obersances e.g., purity, contentment), Asana (the postures); Pranayama (the breath); Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses); Dharana (single-pointed attention/concentration); Dhyana (meditation); and Samadhi (liberation -

of yoga merging consciousness). In the Western world, the focus of yoga is primarily on the Asanas - the physical poses. This is where the bulk of the current research is taking place. Research demonstrates that the health benefits of yoga stem much further than toning your midsection, and stretching out tight muscles. The research shows that yoga can help us decrease levels of stress, improve physiological responses to stress, improve chronic back pain, decrease anxiety and depression, improve general well-being, and improve Rheumatoid arthritis among many other things. Other aspects of yoga, such as meditation and mindfulness are coming popular also (Dharana and Dyana) and we are starting to embrace the peace of mind and sense of well-being that comes when we start to train the "monkey-mind". And these practices are as much a part of yoga as downward dog. The other principles of yoga ("the eight limbs") are worthwhile contemplating. Take the principle of non-violence Ahimsa, literally meaning to do no harm. This is more to this than the literal interpretation of not hurting anyone physically, and it extends to other forms of "violence" and harm. One layer of this is the teaching of respect for all living things, and avoidance of verbal violence, which includes gossip, judgment, putting people down, and speaking negatively about others. Not something we generally think of as ‘violent’. And further still, extending this idea of non-violence and kindness towards ourselves, so not being judgmental, self-critical, or comparing ourselves to others which is something women are very good at doing. “My legs don’t look like

Miranda Kerr’s...” and other comparisons that ultimately leave us feeling unsatisfied with who we are and where we are in life. So in summary, the benefits of yoga are far reaching beyond a strong and supple body. Not only do we receive an increase in physical and mental wellbeing, decreased anxiety, stress and depression, and improved physical health. With potential 'side effects' that include, but are not limited too, loss of interest to judge self and others, decreased tendency to compare self to Miranda Kerr, be nicer to people in general, decrease in mental chatter, frequent attacks of smiling and, frequent episodes of contentment.... it is easy to understand the appeal of the infamous downward dog. What are you waiting for? Disclaimer: This is a general and short overview of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. If you are interested and want to know more, there are many wonderful books published on the Yoga Sutras and the Eight Limbs of Yoga available.

Surprising, mystical and breathtaking...

noosaville Jade: “What a beautiful natural environme nt to relax and enjoy a massage on the water – literally”

The slow but cer tain hand of nature can be found at work on the often breathtaking beauty of the impressive Noosa River.

T

he Noosa River forms the natural artery through the heartland of the region and provides a haven for safe swimming and water-based activities. Shady banks provide perfect picnic spots or departure points for leisurely cruises through myriad tributaries, wetlands and lakes that lead to the mystical black waters of the Everglades. Wildlife abounds especially in this protected habitat. Across the river on the North Shore, a four-wheel drive will take you along a pristine beach past the coloured sands of Teewah, the time-worn shipwreck of the Cherry Venture and eventually to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island via a short ferry ride. Closer to Noosa the Noosa Marina is a destination you shouldn’t miss. As the sun rises, it not unusual to see kids sitting on the end of the wharf wishing for more than a tiddler on the line, watching charter boats head to the outer reef for a serious day’s fishing and hoping one day they’ll be old enough to be on board.

Adjacent to the 40-berth Marina, skateboarders ramp it up before school in Spray Park, the Noosa Ferry prepares to leave for all-day and evening services to Noosa Heads with drop-offs and pick-ups along the way, while aromas of coffee, bacon and toast pervade the salty air. The Noosa Marina is almost ready for another busy day. Set against the backdrop of the tranquil blue-green waters of the Noosa River and with picturesque views whichever way you look, the Marina’s naturally nautical look and village atmosphere are complemented by 20 specialty retailers, five boat cruising options from charter boat hire and self-drive house boats to leisure specialists plus eight restaurants and cafes. Boutiques are filled with elegant fashion and casual resort wear. Specialty stores overflow with must-have homewares, eclectic gifts, chocolates and sweet things, canvases, framed photographs and sculptures, fresh flowers, foot wear, eye wear and toys. It’s heaven times three at day spas for beauty treatments, massages, hairdressing and detox programs Along the pathways from the Marina, across the Doonella Bridge and the Noosa Waters’ canal bridge, or just one ferry stop away, is Noosaville and part of the Noosa River, which in the main

runs parallel to Gympie Terrace. From sun-up along the river or the “golden mile” as it’s known to the locals, taichi and yoga enthusiasts welcome the day, joggers, walkers and pooches on leads share the pathways, and cyclists sweat it out on a dedicated track which extends from the river, loops around the canals of Noosa Waters or via the mangroves and creeks to Noosa Junction. Landscaping and maintenance of the green spaces is constant and appreciated by locals and visitors who from morning to after sunset make excellent use of the plentiful barbecues, gazebos, playgrounds, exercise equipment, timber picnic tables and bench seating under shaded trees where hundreds of lorikeets belt out late afternoon choruses, before heading to the hills. Families playing cricket, swimmers enjoy the cool briny in summer and the not-so-cool briny in winter and optimistic anglers hope to hook a tailor, whiting or flathead. Along the foreshore information centres book tours to Fraser Island, jazz cruises and the romantic Gondola, ducks waddle along the water’s edge, flapping pelicans thrust their beaks under water looking for a feed or join seagulls onshore hoping for leftovers. Hiring a kayak or jet ski, charter a barbecue pontoon, putt-putt, fishing tinnie or stand-up paddle board. Massage Noosa’s Jade Mason, says she’s moved her business to the Boathouse, such is the infatuation for the area. “What a beautiful natural environment to relax and enjoy a massage on the water – literally.” Along Gympie Terrace and around each corner are bike hires, side-by-side boutiques, book shops, world class restaurants, cafes, takeaway food, gelaterias, day spas, hairdressers, homewares shops, liquor supplies and art galleries. At each end of the esplanade are smart restaurants and the Tewantin side has the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, not only a social hub but a hit with kids wishing to learn how to sail. Other precincts nearby such as Gibson Road and Gateway Drive offer wideranging options from homewares, sporting goods, pamper places, a supermarket and a large national brand selling computer equipment and furniture to warehouse-style shops selling high-end fashion, recycled furniture, classy jewellery and a well-known art gallery. Not-too-far-away the Sunday Farmers Market flourishes and pockets all around Noosaville have a plethora of places to stay, eat and shop. 3 -Time Winner of the Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo, Australian Colour Technician of the Year Award, Matt Clements shares his thoughts on this season's colour trends.

H

air colour is always interesting - and this season is no different! Contrasting warm and cool tones used side by side, accents of muted colours such as soft powder pinks & lilacs with grey/whites are still very much an on-trend look. Customers are looking to the likes of celebrities such as Nicole Richie and Kelly Osborne for hair direction and their use of colour tones to make a bold statement, these hues are still very much in fashion. The sixties influence is also still being felt in hair as well as on catwalks, and that’s resulting in colour blocking large sections and panels of contrasting shades to create beautiful finishes. Regardless of which colour trend you want to follow, one thing I can’t stress enough is to consult with a professional before you undertake a major colour change. A lot of people don’t realise how much hair colour can change your whole appearance. Choosing a hair colour that is complimentary to your skin tone is paramount to achieving a successful and long lasting result. Big colour changes and corrective colour needs in-depth consultation before you begin, to make sure the change you're after is realistic, not only about the condition of your hair but also the investment and maintenance you are prepared to make. As well as refreshing your colour at the salon, it’s so important to invest in properly prescribed products that suit your hair needs - if you want beautiful hair you must take care of it!

Never Stop Believing by Sally Obermeder, Allen & Unwin, $29.99 When Sally Obermeder woke up on 13 October 2011, she thought her life was perfect. She had a glamorous, successful career as a television reporter, a wonderful husband and she was about to give birth to her baby who had conceived through IVF following years of struggle to conceive naturally. Finally, she had everything she had ever wanted. Or so she thought. During a routine appointment with her obstetrician, Sally was told she had a severe form of breast cancer. The star of the Seven Network's Today Tonight shares her truly inspiring story of triumph over almost unbeatable odds in a wonderfully warm, funny and honest memoir about her struggle to succeed in the cut-throat world of commercial television and the courageous fight for her life.

Long & winding road to redemption It was a precarious journey to forty for Mary-Lou Stephens. Aside from a cataclysmic childhood, memories of a bitterly cold albeit beautiful Tasmania are few.

my parents would still have loved me and looked after me. I went through life proving it to be true.” In one form or other the stage was central to Mary-Lou, with writing and performing music her preferences. “I loved playing in bands. They were my family, although sometimes very a oing to the beach in the middle of summer, the water was freezing so dysfunctional one especially when all members used heroin. It made rehearsing we’d ‘get used’ to it first before diving in otherwise the shock would be a bit tough and doing a gig even tougher. But as I moved away from that scene I too great and often result in cramps,” she recalls. “Tasmania does have found people who encouraged my songwriting, wanted to tour and record. proved another life-changer for Mary-Lou. “Less than two weeks after the first ten day meditation retreat, I was at a dinner party where my friend and her husband had invited a spare man. I was incensed about the match-make, but being a sophisticated and mature woman I decided to ignore him. Unfortunately, or fortunately as it turns out, he was just too darned interesting, funny and entertaining to ignore. We had a cup of tea together the next day and I felt, for the first time I’d met my equal. I was so used to feeling greater-than or less-than in relationships, I thought that was the way it was supposed to be. Meeting Ken gave me a new perspective in so many ways.” Getting married was a given but it was tinged with sadness. Mary-Lou’s brother died and her mother didn’t have long to live. “When people congratulated me on the upcoming nuptials I’d burst into tears. I was getting married because my mother was dying and we were having the ceremony in my dead brother’s back yard. It was the saddest as well as the most joyful time of my life.” Mary-Lou and Ken, who works in the insurance industry, have been married for nine years and always wanted a dog. “On the RSPCA Noosa website we fell in love with Maddie, who has a big nose and slightly crossed eyes like Barbra Streisand, is a Malinois, a type of Belgian Shepherd but smaller and prettier than a German Shepherd. When adopted she was six and had neurosis so we’ve learnt to keep her away from other dogs and be careful when meeting new people. “We really enjoy the relaxed coastal lifestyle, going to the beach, shopping at the farmer's markets, gardening, visiting the Hinterland and walking Maddie through the cane fields, where thankfully there are no other dogs. Life is pretty laidback in the Stephen's household. If you dropped in, you'd probably find Ken reading, me writing another book and Maddie snoring gently,” says a contented Mary-Lou, who also enjoys the social scene.“My husband drinks. My friends drink. It doesn’t bother me. I am so far past ever wanting a drink it’s just not a problem. I remember being in a pub one night watching a band and someone twigged I didn’t drink alcohol. ‘Wow,’ he said, ‘I guess you never drink unless you’re thirsty.’ It’s a radical thought.”

Mary-Lou is currently on leave from ABC Coast FM to concentrate on a promotional and speaking tour for her darkly funny and beautifully told memoir Sex, Drugs and Meditation, published by Pan Macmillan.

Dr Cyrus Mills reluctantly returns home to rural Vermont to revive the failing veterinary practice of his recently deceased and long estranged father. A reclusive pathologist, Cyrus is more comfortable with cold clinical facts than living animals…not to mention their owners. With the help of a black Labrador gifted in the art of swallowing underwear, a terror whose days are numbers, a Persian cat determined to expose her owner's lover as a gold digger, and the allure of a feisty, gorgeous waitress from the local diner, Cyrus gets caught up in a new community and its endearing and eccentric residents, both human and animal. most likely to cheat. P&G – the company behind many of Australia’s favourite brands, commissioned the study of 1,000 Australians to explore the influence of hair care, colour and style on men and women. It also marks the release of the new head & shoulders for men collection. As it’s revealed that 91% of Australian’s surveyed claim that hair is a key element to a person’s sex appeal, it’s no surprise that women find dirty hair (79%) and dandruff (64%) two of the biggest turn offs. Women are also far less likely than men to pursue a relationship if their potential partner turned up with unclean, unhealthy or unkempt hair. Hair style is also a key factor for a man’s sex appeal; For younger women (18-24), men with styled cuts are rated sexiest and older women (35-44) prefer men with short back and sides. Men with mullets are considered most likely to cheat (25%), proving this dated hairstyle is more trouble than it’s worth. As well as contributing to a man’s sex appeal, hair is also important as a projection of success; The majority of 18-44 year-olds (84%) believe that the way a person takes care of their hair is reflective of the way they take care of themselves, and 39% consider that the condition of a person’s hair reflects how successful they are in their career. Despite these revelations, 1 in 2 men (53%) spend less than five minutes a day on their hair. However, it’s clear that hair is clearly still of importance to men as almost half (45%) are concerned with hair loss. head & shoulders for men Hair Retain provides an easy solution to help protect against hair damage and fall.

ecognised by a cluster of tall Norfolk Pine trees, and surrounded by National Parks that make up the world recognised Noosa Biosphere Reserve, is Peregian Beach. The Village Square, the heart of the beachside town has interconnecting lanes and pathways to everything and provides a shady area for locals and visitors. Picnic tables designed by Richard Newport are popular with families and friends to enjoy take-out fare from the nearby eateries and for shoppers who are in need of a coffee and momentary respite from retails therapy. Each market day on the first and third Sundays of the month, live music takes over and draws large crowds to the lawn in front of the Peregian Beach Surf Club. "We've built an amazing live music scene here, thanks to some dedicated local musicians who set up Peregian Originals,” says Ange Takats, a Peregian Beachbased author, journalist and musician. “There is no regular community music festival of its kind anywhere else in Australia and this makes me proud as punch.” Just over the sand hills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of wallum heath which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in spring. On the western side of Peregian Beach is Lake Weyba National Park, and Lake Weyba, which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. Nearby, too, is the southern extension of the Noosa National Park with a rich mix of coastal heath and scrub and stately rainforest which provides sanctuary and support for a wealth of native flora and fauna. Peregian Village has all the charm of a coastal village. Stores are stocked with classy homewares, stationary, office essentials, quirky and must-buy gifts and of course must-have accessories, beautiful boutiques for him, her and baby too, trendy surf fashion, beauty therapists who fully understand the meaning of serene relaxation and many cafes, all renowned for fresh, exciting fare. Triumphs, traged

The stark contrast between two magazine mavens is evident in early scenes of the ABC’s Paper Giants: The Magazine Wars, but as Nene King tells friend Helen Flanagan, other battles ensued changing her life dramatically.

T

he four-hour mini series Paper Giants:The Magazine Wars was largely (some close to the action might say loosely) based on the autobiography of Dulcie Boling’s adversary Nene King. New Idea editor Boling, played by Rachel Griffiths, confronts her deputy King (Mandy McElhinney, who you many will remember as Rhonda in the AAMI insurance ads and as Kerry Packer's longsuffering secretary in Howzat!) in the newsroom because the latter is hurling withering insults at a junior reporter. It's a pivotal scene because it prompted a desperately disenchanted King to storm out of New Idea to head up arch rival glossy Woman's Day. The sequel to Paper Giants:The Birth of Cleo, is about the two

magazines' bitter fight for readership between 1987 and 1997. It was a scoop by salacious scoop chequebook journalism-driven war for exclusive stories about the royal family - the Sarah Ferguson toe-sucking scandal and the infamous Charles and Camilla tapes - plus international and local celebrities “For 12 years I edited Woman's Day and the Australian Women's Weekly (owned by the late great Kerry Packer), and became the first woman on the board of Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd (Nine Network and Australian Consolidated press magazines),” recalls Nene from her cottage in Victoria’s Ballarat. “It was a time when my career was exciting and successful. Woman's Day dethroned New Idea to become the number one weekly magazine in Australia.

noosastyle

ies, Nene & Noosa “To my amusement the press began calling me the magazine queen – move over Dulcie Boling and Ita Buttrose” Magazine Wars depicts King as someone who wore her heart on her sleeve, unlike the more reserved Boling – chalk and cheese really. But the battle royale did take a personal toll, which unfolds in part two, after Nene became editor in chief of The Australian Women's Weekly and Woman's Day, with a salary of $275,000 and a combined readership of a staggering six million. In May 1996 Nene’s magical life changed forever when her beloved husband Patrick was taken by a shark while scuba diving off Bondi. “My downfall, my depression, my struggle to recapture a passion for life has been much documented…warts and all. I sold my charming free-standing terrace in Sydney and drove to Noosa with my two dogs and a cranky cat in a cage. I bought a lovely sunny house with a pool overlooking hills, forests and winding rivers. It was time for healing. “The sun warmed my aching bones and slowly I began to regain the confidence I lost when Patrick left the building. “Walks along picturesque beaches with my dogs, coffee on Hastings Street, Cosmos at the bar at berardo’s and riotous lunches, dinners, wedding anniversaries and birthdays at the house of Flanagan. The locals were friendly and I enjoyed giving talks at breakfasts and lunches, relating the extraordinary events of my time running mass circulation women's magazines. “I spoke at a dinner for brave Olympian Raelene Boyle to raise money for cancer and launched Ita's first foray into fiction at Bistro C. “I lived in beautiful Noosa for three years – a welcomed sea change from Sydney, a city with memories of great joy and great sadness.” Author Peter FitzSimons spend many months (on and off ) in Noosa writing Nene, the book for HarperCollins. To coincide with the ABC’s mini series, it was recently released with a new final chapter – the Afterword, penned by Nene. “It’s the last (final chapter) I hope to write,” she cheekily remarks.“It covers my return to Melbourne (my hometown) to care for my elderly mother Emily for seven years, to lose all my money to a couple of conmen, to lose my house to the bank and re locate to a cottage in Ballarat. “The peaceful reclusive life has allowed me to lose 30kgs by walking every day with the dogs in beautiful bushland, to dye my brassy blonde hair dark brown and to enjoy living alone.” But Nene’s tranquillity was shattered when Southern Star decided to follow up Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo. “I still shake my head that my obsession, do-or-die desire to make Woman's Day number one, would interest anyone,” she says in disbelief. “It’s ancient history. “And it’s so hard to describe how I felt watching a preview of the two part series at the ABC. I think Ita Buttrose summed it up recently: ‘They know how to write fiction at Southern Star.’ I found the series one dimensional. Yes I yelled, and screamed, and swore too often but nice Nene was lost in the telling. But hey I’ve survived much worse.” As winter descends on Ballarat and the temperatures drop to single figures, Nene longs for Noosa. “I’d love to return to this amazing part of the world, to warm my bones, to reconnect with generous, caring Helen and Tony, drink cocktails with Greg and Jim and hug my friend Christopher Brinkley. “I hope the old girl has another move in her and when I do, I promise not to harass the newsagent on Hastings Street, demanding to know how the mags are selling this week!”

“I lived in beautiful Noosa for three years – a welcomed sea change from Sydney, a city with memories of great joy and great sadness” -

orget colouring-in books for little miss Yvette Swan. Her first foray into art was copying Picasso, Lee and Matisse. On scraps of paper? No, beside line drawings and images in her headmaster father’s treasured art books! Sculpture, photography, film, printmaking, drawing, painting, collage and mixed media eventually became part of her artistic psyche but not before years of dabbling. “It’s amazing what you can do with scraps of paper, ink, a pen and lots of glue,” recalls shy Sydney-born Yvette who took up painting seriously as a teenager and was buoyed by accolades from her teacher and doting parents. Armed with a degree in fine arts, Yvette hit the backpacker trail to London, joined Working Title Film as a production runner, turned her attention to photography back in Sydney and finally her first love - painting. Determined to triumph commercially, Yvette hired gallery space in Paddington for a solo exhibition. It was not a raging success, but she now had the self-confidence to promote herself.

“This was the key. Confronting people, possibly being rejected, not taking it personally and realising how life worked. “Follow your intuition, listen to suggestions, let people work with you to open more doors and ultimately more fun. How people connect is the key to business, money, work, careers and indeed life. “I have a huge admiration for Van Gogh. Very creative, ahead of his time yet his life was so challenging. I can relate to that – never feeling the same as those in the mainstream world. I’m happier spending money on art supplies, film stock and photographic equipment, and enjoying the natural surrounds of my new home rather than living in a material world. “These days I choose different mediums at different times to express happiness and as I don’t have a lot to say, art is a strong form of communication. “Creative energy is what we all have in our heart and when it opens up it can be infectious and bring people together.” With gallery representation in three states, Leeuwin Estate incorporating an image of an artwork onto a wine bottle label,

and The Lost Horizons canvas selected in the exhibition for the Wynne Landscape prize, Yvette decided to reconnect with her art teacher, who coincidentally had viewed the 2002 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman exhibitions. “She loved my large abstract painting and couldn’t believe it was mine. The six years doing art obviously built more of a connection than I realised. Maybe she could feel me in the gallery through my painting.” During three trips to the USA, Yvette fulfilled numerous ambitions from seeing motivational speaker Wayne Dyer in New York; going Out on a Limb with Shirley MacLaine in California; and meeting actress and painter Jane Seymour at one of her exhibitions. “I enjoy tuning into people but felt nervous meeting Seymour until her eyes lit up when I mentioned the words ‘inner love’ and ‘truth’. It struck a chord. “I love New York –the look and feel, its people, the hustle and bustle, art galleries and exhibitions such as Cy Twombly’s which took my breath away. I feel as though I’ve lived there at another time. It’s so familiar, a metaphysical shift within me like thinking about jumping off a cliff and believing I can really do it.” Joining close friends in Noosa was next on Yvette’s radar. “It’s similar to a GPS map. You set the main co-ordinates and work life around it. This is what happened when I found work at Hearts and Minds Art in Hastings Street. I really clicked with [owners] Julie and Greg who asked me to create small (30x30cm), affordable oil paintings and most recently they agreed to be stockists as well as host the launch of my new self-awareness book The Beauty Within: Who We Truly Are. Yvette gives Noosa’s natural surroundings the big tick of approval, ditto Eumundi and Noosa Farmers’ Markets, festivals such as the Noosa Longweekend, yoga plus coffee riverside with friends. “I love the ducks, pelicans, seagulls, sunshine, an early morning swim, going to Bistro C and looking out to the ocean. There is something special about Noosa. Some say it is the natural look which is very beautiful but I also feel it has a peaceful, loving energy. “Noosa has a pink, high yet gentle vibration. It’s easy to see why creative, open-minded people are drawn here and understand the bigger picture. What we believe is real, is only a dream we are now waking up from.”

Yvette’s book The Beauty Within: Who We Truly Are, will be launched at Hearts and Minds Art, 1 Hastings Street Noosa at 6pm, Thursday 27 June, 2013.

Doris Jablonsky tells Helen Flanagan her life-changing experiences, from engineering to swimwear, really are poles apart.

A

s a kid growing up in Bavaria, Doris Jablonsky remembers her father working for a German company in Saudi Arabia, eating pizza on family holidays in Italy and a degree in business being shelved in favour of civil engineering. Whilst studying she met many American and English people who remarked her command of English language was better than their German. “I liked their openness and spontaneous attitude to life,” says Doris who had dreams of living in another country however when the wall came down in Eastern Germany engineers were in high demand so even before leaving university, she’d secured a position as a construction engineer with a large company. “I loved working on building sites and being in a male dominated field was never a problem. “Unfortunately things changed drastically 1996 with many companies going bankrupt or like mine cutting back on numbers. I was devastated.” Girls were discriminated against on building sites and despite perseverance she gave up opting instead for a casual job as a ski instructor where she met partner Bodo. After several years of adding to her skill base including event management, Doris and Bodo’s holidays to Australia planted the seed for the new life she’d wished for. But the visa process was difficult. “Documents were translated, our jobs were assessed, I wrote essays and had them analysed to meet Australian standards,” Doris exclaims. “We sat for our English test, had medical examinations and finally received our visas. It was unbelievable.” On their first visit to Australia, Black Rock in Melbourne, where Bodo was competing in the world championships of contender (dingy) sailing, proved to be the acid test of where the couple would not be residing. “We both love hot weather but when the temperature dropped, if emigration to Australia was successful, it wouldn’t be Victoria,” recalls Doris adding after the championships they explored Airlie Beach to

Brisbane, Sydney to Melbourne and a year later on another trip, went to Perth.“It was too ‘brown’ for Bodo so we returned to Queensland this time the Gold Coast. It was too busy; too many high rises. On the way to Sydney we stayed in Coffs Harbour with friends and quite liked it but it’s too far from an International airport. “Next visit we stayed at Sunshine Vista apartments at Sunshine Beach and fell in love with the area. Beautiful beaches, good restaurants, not too many people, and a lovely hinterland. We knew Noosa was what we were looking for. “Our house in Noosaville backs onto the bush so we have nature on our doorstep. We’ve renovated and added a pool which I swim in every day, so it’s now our little oasis. We’re vegetarians who love to bake bread and cakes also entertain. Gini our adopted cuddly cat is the only meat eater.” Work since arriving eight years ago has had its high and low points. From logistics in Germany, Bodo now works as a floor associate for Woolworths and also distributes Sacred Grounds coffee. Doris worked as a fitness instructor, casual night filler, sold made-in-Australia shirts at markets and became totally frustrated. Market research confirmed her ‘light bulb’ moment. Fashionable high quality swimwear for all ages especially the not-so-young and the more voluptuous, was virtually non-existent. A 60 year-old German company with labels Sunflair, Opera, Sunmarin and Olympia co-incidentally needed a representative in Australia and Doris fitted the bill. “The ranges suit every lady,” describes Doris, who admits establishing a brand wasn’t easy. “When I look back, all the hard work has paid off plus often we’ve been able to combine business with pleasure exploring places such as Perth. “Whether plain or patterned, sexy or reserved, the cozzies are made in premium European lycra in various sizes and cups and are available Australiawide, including Classy Lady in Noosaville. “We miss family in Germany, sailing on Lake Chiemse in summer and driving to Italy in a few hours, but this is our home and since a Citizenship ceremony recently, we’re now very proud Australians”.

It cemented its reputation as one of the best food, wine and lifestyle events in the nation after showcasing a world class program to almost 30,000 patrons over the four day festival. What a difference to 10 years ago when the festival started as a salute to producers with a dinner and trip to the hinterland for several hundred participants. Today there are seven on-site kitchens, 50 fridges, 30,000 pieces of crockery, 20,000 pieces of cutlery, and about 25,000 glasses. And that’s just for the food side of the massive production. Festival director Jim Berardo has vowed to pull out all stops with more surprises and culinary creativity for the 11th annual Noosa International Food & Wine Festival, from 15 to18 May 2014.

Perfect weather for patrons of Noosa International Food Michael’s new menu, mention View’s great $59 dining deal, (as per the ad in this edition) of a three-course a-lacarte dinner – your choice from the full menu. From herb crusted lamb rump with gratineed cauliflower and brussel sprouts, drizzled with cabernet and bacon pan juice gravy; to confit duck leg served with parsnip puree, eschallots, asparagus; and pecan crumble, Michael’s menu is brimming with comfort food and seasonal pride. His trademark gnocchi dish has been tweaked, adding baby spinach, caramelised fennel and roasted butternut pumpkin. It marries beautifully with a walnut and goats cheese nage which Michael says is a flavoured stock generally used for poaching. “Some of the stock is used to blanch the gnocchi, which is reduced then flavoured with the goats cheese and walnuts.” Desserts to warm the soul include caramelised quince custard tart with rhubarb semi-freddo, jelly and reduction; Calvados crème caramel with poached pear and biscotti; and a rich melting chocolate pudding with chocolate crumble and white chocolate cream. A nod to the Mediterranean

O

pening a restaurant in Noosa was a dream-come-true for Sydney friends Chris Evanges, a chef who’s worked in restaurants such as Flying Fish, and Gina Reeve, a front-ofhouse supremo, who most recently worked at Grennys. Chris’ background is Greek and Gina’s Italian, so contemporary food with an emphasis on the Mediterranean plus seasonal local produce was a natural at Jellyfish on the River, where effective lighting plays homage to the gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell with trailing tentacles. The kitchen brigade prefers organic produce where possible and make everything from scratch including fettuccine with squid ink, Tin Can Bay prawns, cuttlefish and black mussels, which Chris says is one of the most popular dishes on the menu. Others are the wonderfully wintry 12 hour cooked lamb shoulder with potato gratin, confit carrots, broad beans and roasted garlic purée; and slow cooked duck with pumpkin purée, red cabbage, bacon and hazelnuts. Enticing entrees include whiting fillets baked in vine leaves with bread crumbs, pine nuts and lemon aioli; confit of salmon with pea purée, Pernod and orange sauce; and paella-stuffed slow cooked calamari with spinach and tomato. Warm soft-centred chocolate fondant with vanilla anglaise, pistachio praline and vanilla bean ice cream; also espresso crème brûlée with cumin biscotti and fig Kahlua sabayon are two of the dessert delights. Ricotta pancakes with leatherwood honeycomb and caramelised banana; and eggs royal which are poached eggs with confit salmon, avocado, spinach and hollandaise sauce are standout breakfast dishes. Jellyfish on the River uses Pure Life ph-balanced water, caters to kids, has al fresco dining and is located opposite the Noosa River on Gympie Terrace Noosaville. NoosaStyleLiving

dd ‘vibrant café society’ to Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows everything…the title of Lesley Gore’s classic song and you could be excused for thinking she’s referring to Sunshine Beach. Once known as Golden Beach, Sunshine Beach is a popular choice for visitors who choose to stay in apartments with slide-away doors to let in the salty summer breezes or spread out and luxuriate in multi-million dollar mansions with beach access. Waking up to the sounds of rolling surf is a treat; so is breakfast at the Surf Club but get up at sparrows if you want a table directly overlooking the sand so budding ironmen and nippers can watch the action. The wide, open coastline hosts a variety of banks for an endless, uncrowded surfing session and the section in front of the Surf Club is patrolled year round. The beach acts as a runway to nature walks and trails through the National Park, all the way to Noosa via breathtaking views, a dip at Little Cove and a surf break at the unspoilt Alexandria Bay. If coffee is something you can’t do without, experience a barista-made espresso – the organic coffee beans are roasted on site – and spend an idle hour under a broad umbrella with a magazine or property guide. A breakfast alternative is to find a spot on a sun-drenched wide deck or in the shade on the pavement which spills out from an al fresco café - perfect spots too for brunch or late lunch. Maybe also a late afternoon cocktail, beer or other refreshers as you watch the world go by from one of the bars. Book at one of the many restaurants or cafes where imaginative seasonal fare is served; order takeaway such as fish and chips, pizza and home-made pies; and call in to the bakery, deli or general store for fresh local produce and pantry supplies, snacks, ice creams, cakes and sweets; and how about a picnic pack to take to the park or the beach foreshore. The retail mix and specialised services on offer are cosmopolitan yet varied from savvy boutiques, surf shop, hairdresser, pamper specialists and homewares to architects, art galleries and property management companies that look after holiday accommodation. Whatever you’re after, you won’t be disappointed. The laidback cafe society of Sunshine Beach is always ready to please. And you never know who you’ll bump into!

Pete Evans Recipe

A

few years ago I found myself in LA cooking with Curtis Stone and the legendary Wolfgang Puck’s catering team for ‘G’Day USA’. We had to cater for 800 people and the following recipe is one of the canapés I created for the night. When I serve this at a function, I normally present the fish salad on betel leaves (edible leaves from South-East Asia that have medicinal qualities). However, on arrival in LA, I found that betel leaves weren’t available, so I decided to serve the fish on crispy fried won tons as an alternative. To be honest, I think the won tons worked better as they are easier to handle and add great texture to the end result. For a larger serving, just add some finely sliced green mango, papaya or glass noodles for a refreshing salad.

n a L i r S , d o o f a e S A burning desire for top chef status is just one of Peter Kuruvita many claims to fame.

P

eter Kuruvita is charismatic, easy-going and known for his culturally inspired cooking. He was influenced by his Sri Lankan father and Austrian mother, also his grandmother whilst he and his brother were growing up in Colombo and before the family moved to Australia.

As an apprentice to the renowned Greg Doyle, he was hit with pots and burnt by hot pans for not getting it right. “I was sick of having the living s*** beaten out of me but came to terms with it, learned so much, found serenity in the kitchen and eventually became Greg’s trusted side-kick,” Peter says with a laugh. After work experience with the “monster” Roux brothers in London, he worked at the 1-Michelin-star Rue St Jacques, later secured a chef role at the 3Michelin star, Waterside Inn in Bray, followed by resorts and hotels all over the world. Sydney’s Bilson’s and Flying Fish were both awarded two hats and at the latter, he successfully juggled being the head chef with television presenter, author, loving wife to Karen who’s also his manager plus a devoted dad to Jai 14, Marley 11 and Taj 6. Today he has even more on his plate. A third television show is currently being filmed in Mexico, and three classy locations now have Peter’s moniker with the Noosa Beach House on the site of Cato’s Restaurant & Bar at the Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa, the latest. It has an all-day menu in the bar and a lunch menu that flows into the evening plus an a la carte menu and well balanced wine list in the restaurant. At the helm, making Peter’s dream of food of “no fixed address that’s designed for holidays in Noosa”, come true, is Tony Kelly, a well known Coast resident, former head chef of the 2-hatted Stokehouse in Brisbane and long-time mate. “I love Noosa, and Tony who I worked with on Hayman Island, is an great fit,” extols Peter who’s reinvigorated his passion for pastrymaking and believes the top restaurants in the town all have a niche. “Where can you have a live mud crab, a modern Sri Lankan curry, Mexican-style chicken with salsa, a contemporary take on surf and turf, simply prepared, cooked to perfection and all under $40, except for crustaceans which are market price. This is my style of place. “Working with Tony is chef de cuisine Katie-Beth McKay who worked at Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir aux Quart Saisons, and I met at Taste of Australia when she was on a busman’s holiday in Australia from Ireland, with partner Gary Whyte, our restaurant manager. very day is Yum Cha day so lovers of Asian food no longer have to wait until the weekend. Located on the upper level of the Village Square, The Smiling Duck specialises in fresh flavours direct from the wok, authentically cooked in the open kitchen by south-east Asian chefs, headed by Alex Wee. From 11.30am until 3.00pm enjoy traditional dishes such as steamed pork buns, steamed chicken and chive dumplings, chicken and corn soup and of course the ever-popular crispy spring rolls. Just as appealing as the food is the price. Five courses, a glass of wine and a pot of green tea is only $30.00 per person for a minimum of two people. The term ‘yum cha’ literally means to drink tea, but the custom has evolved over time to include the serving of delicious light snacks, or ‘dim sum’, to satisfy guests and demonstrate hospitality. In English ‘dim sum’ means ‘to touch the heart’ - such is the care and craft that goes into making the treats. Lavish menus of a glorious era and the world’s most famous ship, the RMS Titanic, will be recreated during Titanic 11 Culinary Journey celebrations, with a Third Class Lower Deck Awash Party on Friday 9 August in the Village Square ($95 per person all inclusive), and a First Class 11-course Captain’s dinner ($150 per person all inclusive) on Saturday 10 August. Delectable menus, imagery and entertainment will be part of the extravagance which was experienced during maritime travel in the early 1900s. "If this book was on My Kitchen Rules it would be called Come Back Kitchen because it puts more bums on seats," he said at the launch. Editor Natascha Mirosch, who with the help of a team of talented reviewers has eaten her way around the state, says changes in the food scene have been reflected in the hats awarded. "Some restaurants have taken their foot off the pedal and have lost a hat, but there have been gains as well from large established places that have stepped up.” Special guest Matt Golinski said Plates for Mates had generated a lot of money which has been passed on to help other burn victims but it was the support of hospitality friends and the industry which had helped him through the some of the tough spots. The second Queensland edition included a total of 500 new reviews from old favourites to new entrants, ranging from Northern NSW to the Far North. “It’s an exciting time to be dining out, particularly in our capital, with many out-of-state restaurateurs choosing Brisbane as the second and third locations for their world-class dining venues,” commented Natascha Mirosch, who was co-presenter alongside Alastair and was emphatic that restaurants and cafes were visited anonymously and all meals were paid for. “From our very best hatted restaurants to our cheerful casuals, Brisbane is one of the most exciting places to eat and drink in the country right now. “As for key food trends over the past 12 months, if you like a bit of the Red, White and Blue, you’ll be

The line between bar and restaurant has also become more blurred with bars upping the ante in their food offerings, while restaurants began offering drinkfriendly snacks and starters. “When it comes to liquid offerings, it’s been dubbed the ‘Year of the Beer’ with several craft beer joints opening and restaurants adding artisaninspired beer from around the world to their menus. “Wine was following the same artisan trend with natural and ‘low intervention’ wines popping up on menus and poured into happy diners glasses around the state.” Amongst the winners and grinners was Restaurant of the Year - Esquire, Brisbane, for the second year in row and a stand -out on the Brisbane dining scene. It was also awarded three hats. Chef of the Year, Alejandro Cancino, Urbane - a bright new star on Brisbane's dining scene, delights diners with innovative food and amazing degustations. Owners Andrew and Clare Barry are very excited and proud. Not only is it the only restaurant in Queensland which made the final three but it places it alongside well known stalwarts in Melbourne and Sydney. "We can't believe our little regional pasta place is up there with the likes of Bottega in Melbourne and The Botanic Gardens in Sydney,'' says Andrew who heads the kitchen brigade. “Bottega may have plush leather seats and soft lighting and be a favourite haunt for CBD diners, and The Botanic Gardens might boast wisteria-draped verandas and spectacular leafy views but can they compete with Pasta Pronto's quadrucci which is a delicious concoction of parsley pasta, sundried tomatoes, capsicum, shallots and caramelised bacon in a cream sauce.”

Rave reviews for Loubet’s fare...

orn in Bordeaux in South west France, Bruno Loubet is a legend in the food world. With an impressive culinary CV spanning illustrious establishments including Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and The Four Seasons Inn on the Park, he has been described by the renowned chef Raymond Blanc as being “one of the most talented chefs” he knows. In 2001, after nearly 20 years running some of London’s busiest kitchens, Bruno moved with his young family to Brisbane. Who will ever forget his standout dishes of beetroot ravioli and the game charcuterie plate at Bruno’s Tables and berardo’s in Noosa, or at Bistro Bruno Loubet which he opened to rave reviews after his return to London? If that’s the case, it’s a reason why you should include Bruno’s latest cookbook Mange Tout (Random House $49.95) in your repertoire. It is inspired by his upbringing and travels, and combines the traditional and familiar with ideas and ingredients taken from around the world. With recipes for his signature dishes including maple-crisp duck breast, Indochine braised beef with mango, prune and armagnac sticky pudding, and his version of his grandmother's ‘île flottante’, Bruno offers a delicious mix of accessible and aspirational, all delivered with a dash of Gallic flair.

wi n e & drink Australia’s First Families of Wine at the Hilton Hotel masterclass event

The families literally 'unlocked' their family cellars to present the wines that they considered the 'keys' to their success - and then discuss their merits and history with the audience.

Reidel Glasses at the Ready…

T

he Hilton Hotel in Brisbane recently played host to the most comprehensive tasting of Australia's wine icons the city has seen in years. UNLOCKED was the 'key' to a wine opportunity rarely given - presented by the patriarchs of 12 of Australia's most iconic family-owned wineries, the custodians of over 1200 years of collective winemaking experience - Australia's First Families of Wine. This was an amazing chance for wine connoisseurs and industry stalwarts to sample some of the greatest wines Australia has produced in fine Reidel glasses. The families literally 'unlocked' their family cellars to present the wines that they considered the 'keys' to their success - and then discuss their merits and history with the audience. Henschke, Taylors', Brown Brothers, McWilliam's, Tahbilk, DeBortoli, Jim Barry, d'Arenberg, Campbells, Yalumba, Howard Park and Tyrell's were all on-hand to discuss their chosen wines in a panel forum and then personally over luncheon. And, if that wasn't enough - then the families' Next Generation winemakers (some now 5th generation) showcased their 'new direction' wines and discussed their visions for the future of their family wineries in the coming years. All in all this was a wine lovers dream come true. Hosted by local media identity Rupert McCall, “UNLOCKED” featured the patriarchs of 12 of Australia’s most iconic family owned wineries with a combined 1,200 years of wine making heritage who literally “unlocked” their family cellars and presented the wines they considered the ‘keys’ to their success; some for five generations.

2012 Rolling Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre Each year the Grenache and Mourvèdre planted in Block 53 and Block 56 respectively at Cumulus Estate Wines’ Rolling vineyard are the very last varietals to be picked (last year being harvested on 11 April), being carefully hand-selected late to ensure maximum fruit flavours are achieved. Planted back in 1999, it is only now, a lucky 13 vintages later, that the winemaking team have decided to craft the fruit into the brand new 2012 Rolling Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre . Senior winemaker Debbie Lauritz says,“I’ve always had great faith in the quality of Grenache and Mourvèdre from our vineyard site but each vintage something hasn’t quite hit the mark for red wine production. Either crop levels were too high or too low, or the quality wasn’t quite there. In 2012 the vines seemed to come of age with beautifully balanced canopies, a moderate crop and fruit full of flavour. And it is looking just as good for 2013.” At the winery, the Grenache and Mourvèdre were co-fermented together and pressed off skins within a week of finishing ferment, maximising the fruit and gentle structure with fine balanced tannins. The wine is then blended with Shiraz (picked nearly a month earlier and fermented separately) to create a blend of 48% Grenache, 40% Shiraz and 12% Mourvèdre. No oak maturation was used for the new blend. “Our Rolling brand philosophy is minimal intervention to let the pure fruit flavours shine, and with GSM in particular I feel the structure and texture can be overpowered by oak. We wanted a warm and inviting wine for this winter season so have left it alone,” explains Debbie. RRP $18.95 www.cumuluswines.com.au

Mandala Wines

Cool conditions allowed the grapes for the 2011 vintage to ripen slowly, retaining their natural acidity; while the high rainfall demanded complete attention to vineyard maintenance and canopy management to protect fruit quality. Handpicked from the north facing slopes of Mandala's home site at Dixon's Creek, the grapes for the 2011 Chardonnay came from the estate's 20-plus year old vines. While 20% of the grapes for the 2011 Pinot Noir were picked from the clay loam soils of the Dixon's Creek site, and 80% from the volcanic soil of the Yarra Junction vineyard.

2011 Mandala Chardonnay

The 2011 comprises four chardonnay clones that were picked, fermented and matured separately, each receiving identical treatment in the winery. As in previous years, 50% wild yeast ferment was retained, however for this vintage the proportion of malolactic fermentation was increased to build palate weight and texture. The wine was matured for nine months in French oak, 20% in new barrels and the remainder in one, two and three year old barrels.

To protect the fruit from potential issues arising from the wet season and to maintain the clean, fresh fruit characters, the traditional four day cold soaking was forgone in favour of immediate fermentation. Grapes from the Yarra Junction vineyard particularly showed thin skins and light colour, leading to the delicate colouration of the finished wine. The wine was matured for 12 months in French oak; 20% in new barrels and the remainder in one, two and three year old barrels. Sour cherry, lifted floral aromas and spicy oak overtones combine with soft raspberry, cherry and strawberry fruits in the palate. Precise acidity, fine oak tannins and some earthy, savoury notes provide length and balance. This wine will build weight through the mid and back palate with age. Drink now to five years. RRP $28.00

Penfolds 2008 Vintage According to Penfolds' vintage notes, 2008 was marked by the longest heat wave recorded. A 15 day run of 35 degree plus heat between 3rd - 17th March 2008 made it a vintage of two halves. Penfolds managed early ripening Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from precious older, lower yielding, self regulating vines. Rigorous harvesting and meticulous classification resulted in generous volumes of pristine fruit from Penfolds prime vineyards in the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra.

T

he deep colours, superb aromatics and dense ripe tannins all point to a classic Penfolds vintage - resulting in outstanding wines. Penfolds Grange 2008 was given a perfect score of 100 points by Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, in what is arguably the world’s most influential wine review collection, Robert Parker Junior’s ‘Wine Advocate’ from the USA. The Wine Advocate review said: “This is clearly a wonderfully opulent and a magic vintage for this label.” While for many a taste of the ‘magic’ 2008 Penfolds Grange may be unattainable, Dan Murphy’s is remaining true to its founder with an early Cellar Release to allow wine lovers to try cabernet sauvignon from this much-lauded vintage. Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 is available in store and online for $299 a bottle. Bin 707 isn’t the only aged Penfolds wine to grace the shelfs of Dan Murphy’s, they also hold a collection of every Penfolds Grange released from 1951 to 2008, which is available with price upon inquiry. For those after single bottles, they also have the first experimental vintage of Grange - one of the rarest bottles of wine in the world - Penfolds Grange 1951 for $65,000. Additionally, Penfolds Grange 2003 is listed for $499.99. Drawing upon its founder’s belief that great wines improve with age, Dan Murphy’s has more than 3 million bottles of wine ageing in its Melbourne cellar, including many of the finest wines from Penfolds. They have also expanded and developed their Cellar Release program, which has an annual early August release of fine Australian wines which have been aged for at least five years.

O

rientated towards the Pacific Ocean at Sunshine Beach, renowned architect John Mainwaring’s design concept for the two-storey holiday house on Belmore Terrace was to maximise space yet avoid being a large glass box that framed a solitary view. The Hong Kongbased owners wanted a living space that offered a variety of moods. It was conceived in two main zones: the children’s wing, a tapered shape, comprises bedrooms on the ground level and an informal lounge, bathroom and guest bedroom upstairs. The second wing has the main bedroom downstairs, the kitchen, dining area and formal living area are upstairs with the kitchen and dining focussing on the ocean. With scale-like polycarbonate awnings framing the space

there’s a feeling of protection. On the walls of the entrance area, which has been described as like an oriental teahouse, are clear opaque panels of corrugated polycarbonate sheeting, like a patchwork which manipulates the views while the numerous doors, windows and louvres pull prevailing breezes into the interior. Throughout the house a volcanic material consisting of mostly silica shards, called Hinuera stone has been used. “Barefoot it feels as though you are walking on sand,” says Mainwaring. “There’s a certain contemplative feel to the lounge area,” comments interior designer Victoria Clayton of Aha Design, referring to the sumptuous, neutral coloured Minotti lounge suites and the Philippe Starck -designed floor lamp with its hanging fabric diffuser. “There are comparisons with the famous Marilyn Monroe scene when the breeze shoots through.”

nappropriate landscaping of residential land near natural coastlines runs the risk of turning beachside destinations into suburbia. If you are planting a new coastal garden, retain indigenous vegetation. A coastal look is often based around curves, which are created naturally when water meets the sand and by exposure to wind. Draw inspiration from the beach, plants and colours and as coastal gardens tend not to have large paved areas, a simple and cost-effective surface for paths and driveways is local gravel, such as crushed granite, which also allows rainwater to soak into the ground. For decks, take inspiration from piers and use wide decking boards. The wider the board the greater the thickness required to prevent them cupping. Look for timber recyclers who often sell reclaimed pier timber.

noosastyle Boston ferns, a striking effect against the white colour scheme Beach colours are typically simple in palette and commonly include blue, grey and white. Other useful colours are sandstone, olive, khaki, aqua and shades of blue and green. Bright colours may be used as highlights, such as those you see in beach towels, but best kept to a minimum. Sculpture can play an important role in beach gardens but make sure the materials and story of the sculpture fit in with your garden's purpose. A beach garden should look relaxing and restrained, so if you are not sure about a piece of sculpture or garden art, don't use it. Taking on a beachside chic transformation is the Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa. Global design company Woods Bagot has selected natural white for the façade with balconies painted grey and appointed Outside Noosa to refurb the gardens as well as greening al fresco and some interior spaces such as the resort’s new restaurant Noosa Beach House Peter Kuruvita, which since opening recently, gives a hint of the work going on behind the scenes. “The overall vibe is casual, beachside chic, a style that lends itself just as easily to a residential application,” explains Outside Noosa’s John Scomparin. “The restaurant’s ambience is enhanced by clean, crisp lines and the inclusion of organic elements draws the outside in. We custom-coloured the sleek, lightweight fibre stone self-watering pots to match the décor and potted them with a selection of Raphis, Kentia and Bamboo palms. At street level we also added a new type of dwarf Philodendron. “Adding character to the restaurant space are multiple hanging baskets which again were custom-coloured, lined with coconut fibre, fitted with stainless steel fittings and planted with Boston ferns, a striking effect against the white colour scheme. “A herb garden is underway. The seasonal selection, also trees such as curry and bay, will be visible from the restaurant and bar. Sandstone slabs with thyme creeping between them will be used as steppers to match the rear retaining wall. Revamping the garden beds will add a green element to the accommodation suites, elsewhere Stormy-seas Lomandra will add a pop of blue to the droughttolerant Australian native grasses while the gardens and pond in the porte cochere will complement the hotel’s overall chic new look.

Stone cladding helps build garden of resilience... In a design inspired by Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian, a student entry at this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show has incorporated Boral Cultured Stone cladding as a key design element. ne of four emerging garden designers chosen to participate in the Landscaping Victoria competition, Peta Donaldson of Mount Martha, Victoria, used Cultured Stone in Country Ledgestone Aspen to add dimension to her grid garden design. Sponsored by the Country Fire Authority, each entry in the competition had to create a garden that incorporated bushfire management in the design. “When I design a garden I want to provide people with a love (or renewed love) for their own space, to invigorate them and make them yearn to be outside. Boral Cultured Stone is realistic in shape, texture and colour and provides garden designers with solutions for unique, visual displays. The wall was built using fire retardant blueboard then clad in Cultured Stone. I feel it gives the garden interest and definition. I did a lot of research on stone cladding and in my opinion Boral’s offering is the most realistic on the market.” Boral Cultured Stone cladding has been cleverly engineered to look like traditional stone and is an affordable and adaptable manufactured stone product for internal and external projects. www.boral.com.au/culturedstonePR or call 1300 134 002.

New Sunshine Coast Art Prize could rival the ‘Archibald’ The Sunshine Coast is set to host a major international art festival that will offer the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest international art prize.

L

ifeArt Worldwide will light up the Queensland tourist mecca this Spring as more than 100 global and Australian artists compete for the $25,000 prize pool. The festival will be held at Sunshine Coast TAFE Mooloolaba campus from 25th October to 3rd November. Emulating world-famous European Biennale art spectaculars, it will combine artist exhibitions and workshops with other cultural showcases including food, wine and fashion. Award judge and internationally acclaimed Indigenous artist Lloyd Hornsby said LifeArt Worldwide could one day sit alongside the Archibald Prize as one of Australia’s most prestigious art competitions. “It’s not the Archibald yet, but it certainly could be because there’s nothing else like it in Australia,” Mr Hornsby said. “The event provides a fantastic opportunity for international recognition that will draw the most talented established and upand-coming artists in the world. “The combination of a blending of global and local art, the internationally competitive prize pool and the integration of other cultural activities is highly original. “The result will be one of the world’s finest contemporary art marketplaces and is sure to capture the imagination of the mainstream art world.” Artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and sculpture are invited to apply for the competition, including a $15,000 first prize – the biggest open category international art

award in the Southern Hemisphere. Other prizes include an $8,000, four-week artist residency at Sunshine Coast TAFE’s picturesque Noosa campus and $1000 worth of art supplies. Mr Hornsby, who has had his work exhibited across Australia and now owns a gallery in Brisbane, said holding LifeArt worldwide in S. E. Queensland would provide a platform for lesser-known local artists to build their reputations. “This is enormously positive for the region’s developing artists,” Mr Hornsby said. “LiveArt Worldwide will give them an opportunity to come faceto-face with leading international publishers, galleries and collectors and demonstrate their talents. “They will have the opportunity to be identified with their work, which is extremely important for upcoming artists looking to build a profile.” Co-judge and LifeArt Worldwide Director Cathy Condon said the winning entry will be judged on how artists embody the event’s ambitious theme: the meaning of life. “The significance, purpose, and ultimate fate of life is a central concept around the world that is questioned in science, philosophy, religion and art,” Ms Condon said. “As there is no unequivocal definition of life, this is the chance for entrants to offer their interpretation of how their life as an artist relates to their existence and consciousness.” "Although the closing date for artist entries has officially passed, Ms Condon said late entries of high quality would be considered." Artists can enter LifeArt Worldwide via the event website: www.lifeartworldwide.com

“This is enormously positive for the region’s developing artists,” Mr Hornsby said.

FLIRTING with the BARMAN

Most Australians live in cities, clinging to the coast and looking outwards towards the ocean. Yet almost all of us feel closely connected to the country, even if we hardly ever visit it. Many of us dream of moving to rural areas, even though there's a harshness to much of the Australian landscape, we still feel a sense of romance about it. For Rural Australian Homes, Leta Keens travelled around Australia to find the 18 homes featured in the book - a wide-ranging and appealing selection that includes a sheep station that has been in the same family for 100 years, a converted general store, an adapted shed, and award-winning architect-designed contemporary houses. Covering every State and the Northern Territory, this book gives a compelling insight into contemporary life in rural Australia, and offers a glimpse into some of the history that has defined it.

rease is the number one party musical, featuring all the unforgettable songs from the hit movie including You’re The One That I Want, Grease Is The Word, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Sandy, Greased Lightnin’ and many more. In Australia Grease is still the word, as the country’s best known theatre producer and double Tony Award-winning John Frost reveals why he brought back his new multi-million dollar production. “I’m constantly asked when I’ll be producing Grease again – it’s possibly the most requested musical in the back catalogue of the Gordon Frost Organisation,” says the impresario. “When the TV series Glee celebrated the music of Grease on one of the recent episodes, and Olivia Newton John and John Travolta reunited for a charity Christmas album in December, I knew the time was right to bring Grease back to Australia. I’m thrilled that Rob Mills will be our Danny, straight from his success in Legally Blonde, and that we have found a new leading lady in Gretel Scarlett. Both Rob and Gretel gave sensational auditions, and our UK creative team knew instantly that they were the ideal Danny and Sandy. And it’s wonderful to be working with the clever Todd McKenney again, also the talented Anthony Callea and, for our sixth musical together, the irrepressible Bert Newton. With this top draw cast of musical theatre stars I have no doubt Grease will again be everyone’s favourite party musical. “What can I say about this cast? You’re The One That I Want!” Besides Rob Mills, who also made a name for himself in musical theatre performing Fiyero in the Broadway blockbuster Wicked in Melbourne and Sydney for two years, Bert Newton returns to his radio roots to play the role of slick veteran disc jockey Vince Fontaine; Todd McKenney dusts off his dancing shoes to star as Teen Angel, the good-looking, falsetto-voiced, Fabian lookalike; Anthony Callea is in the role of All-American, rock-star student at Rydell High, Johnny Casino; Rizzo, the leader of the Pink Ladies, will be played by Lucy Maunder; and Kenickie will be played by Stephen Mahy. The cast also includes Francine Cain (Frenchy), Chris Durling (Doody), Sam Ludeman (Sonny), Duane McGregor (Roger) and Laura Murphy (Jan). Curtains up at Noosa Arts “How do you solve the problem of Maria” is just one of the memorable numbers in West Side Story, which takes to the stage of the Noosa Arts Theatre in September.

T

he exciting musical is directed by Sam Coward whose previous productions include the smash hit Shout! The Legend of Johnny O’Keefe, Jesus Christ Superstar, La Ronde, Influence, plus Erotique. The current president of the Sunshine Coast Theatre Alliance and coartistic director of XS Entertainment, Sam’s aim is to attract new audiences to the world of theatre by making edgy and challenging new works such as in 2011, when he directed the sell-out season of David Williamson’s Influence for the Noosa Arts Theatre, receiving high praise for the production from the playwright himself. Sam will breathe new life into the timeless West Side Story, with strong emphasis on the music written by Leonard Bernstein and choreography by Stephanie Fisher. There’s no doubt the production will be a bold and cutting edge with Sam staying true to the stunning musical score, which includes Maria, America, Somewhere, Tonight, Jet Song, I Feel Pretty, A Boy Like That, One Hand, One Heart, Gee Officer Krupke, and Cool. The dark themes, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre, making this one of the great classics. Mark your diaries for West Side Story performances from 11 to 28 September, 2013.

Opening next month is the winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for best comedy in 2009...

God of Carnage "Yasmine Reza's God of Carnage is a comedy of manners – without any manners whatsoever" says director by Simon Denver. "This sparkling and incisive script is therefore its own genre – a comedy of bad manners. “What ensues is riotously funny as their social veneer of process and resolution slides rapidly away to reveal that the parents are actually more immature then the children. The frightening thing is the more their civilised polish disintegrates – the more we see ourselves in the world of brutal truth they create. You'll laugh so much you'll almost feel guilty. “‘Comedy is a speaking picture of the follies and foibles of a nation’ said Voltaire. You have to admit – when we fail we fail spectacularly! You never quite realise just how high the high moral ground is until you are tumbling from it!” This internationally sensational comedy captures this decline frame by frame and more importantly – laugh by laugh. Frank Wilkie, Sharon Grimly, Brett Klease and Kate Cullen share equal leads in this four hander. Since opening in London 2008 it has taken the world by storm because its themes are universal. It’s the third longest running play of the new millennium. It opens at the Noosa Arts Theatre on 10 July, 2013 Bookings: 5449 9343 or www.noosaartstheatre.org.au NoosaStyleLiving

Louise Terry …a beautiful, accessible ‘wilderness’ where I’ve seen turtles, whales, dolphins, wallabies, koalas, kookaburras, black cockatoos, lace monitors…

FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS, LOUISE TERRY HAS THRIVED IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY, HOWEVER AFTER A SIX MONTH “MID-LIFE ADVENTURE” DRIVING SOLO AROUND AUSTRALIA, IN HER 35 YEAR OLD KOMBI, THE DESTINATION AND MARKETING SPECIALIST RETURNED, BURSTING WITH GREATER CONFIDENCE ABOUT NOOSA’S FUTURE.

What initially attracted you to Noosa? I wanted to chase the sun and flee the chill of Melbourne. Thirteen long cold winters were getting me down and I had a hunger to see the horizon every day. What I immediately loved was that any direction you looked it was green and blue – trees, grass, sky, sea, river, mountains – so calming and centring. It also offered the things I loved about Melbourne – amazing restaurants, great events and a sense of style plus warm year-round weather, clean air, great beaches and a sense of community. Growing up in a small town on the Murray River, I was excited to live in a smaller, more connected place again. What was the notion behind travelling solo around Australia? Approaching 40 and comfortably single, I was not having a mid-life crisis as some suggested, rather a mid-life adventure. I thought about things that if I didn’t do now whilst I was debtfree, had health and independence, I could regret later in life. And I kept coming back to a desire to bring places in Australia to life. I’ve travelled a lot overseas but wanted to know about Darwin, Katherine, Broome, Exmouth, Esperance and the Nullarbor. Instinct guided a lot of my thinking and planning, such as travelling anti-clockwise and leaving in winter to get across the top end before the wet season. Apart from that, the rest of the 21,000kms was just day to day. I’m happy in my own company and knew no-one else would be able to take six months out from the ‘real world’. I loved it. It brought me confidence, trust and a process for working through fears, like driving alone as a female in the middle of the outback in a 35 year old car, with no phone service and 300kms to reach the next semblance of a township. Highlights included Etty Bay, south of Cairns, Coral Bay in WA,

Margaret River, the Great Ocean Road plus crossing the outback up north and the Nullarbor down south also felt like big achievements. The plan was always to come back to Noosa and the experience certainly crystallised how and why our region undoubtedly has the full package, as a place to live and holiday. In a Noosa nut shell how would you describe the region to visitors? It’s always a challenge to convey the Noosa message in a few minutes to people who have never been but for me the combination of world class nature, the Noosa National Park, Noosa Everglades and nearby Fraser Island, all within easy reach of some of Australia’s best restaurants, most popular beaches and shopping from local surf to fashion labels, is what makes Noosa distinctive and a perfect base for internationals especially to visit. Domestic visitors from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are attracted to the same elements but are also motivated by events. Does being a Biosphere make a difference? Being a Biosphere Reserve is one of the reasons why Noosa is so popular and inimitable: the combination of nature and lifestyle. Visitors can walk from their hotel under a canopy of trees to enjoy retail therapy and dinner overlooking the beach; stroll to a national park or cruise along pristine river system. The fact UNESCO recognised this balance between ‘man and nature’ gives us a creditable global endorsement to reinforce our marketing message. What can be done about the declining koala population? One of Tourism Noosa’s key objectives as outlined in our Sustainable Destination Action Plan 2013-2016 is to establish a sustainability program with key partners. We’ve engaged with all wildlife and environmental groups requesting an update on their current and future projects to determine how Tourism Noosa can provide support. We’re particularly interested in learning more about the proposed koala sanctuary in the Noosa National Park. What’s the Nature Coast all about? Australia’s Nature Coast is a collaborative project between tourism organisations from the Fraser Coast to Gympie-Cooloola, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast. It aims to leverage the combined appeal of our natural assets – from World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the Noosa Everglades, two adjoining Biospheres (Noosa and Great Sandy) and the Glasshouse Mountains to name a few, by encouraging product development that is eco-focussed and creating more relevant experiences for visitors. Noosa has many attributes. What’s top of mind? A passionate and progressive community and tourism industry thanks to those who shaped the Noosa landscape and to those contributing now. Every time I run through the Noosa National Park I think what a gift it is. It could have looked like any other built up headland around Australia but instead it’s a beautiful, accessible ‘wilderness’ where I’ve seen turtles, whales, dolphins, wallabies, koalas, kookaburras, black cockatoos, lace monitors and of course bush turkeys. I love our villages. At any given time I can choose a mood or ambience from river bliss and country charm to surfside celebration and be there between five and 25 minutes. What are your favourite things to do? A run along the Tanglewood track in the Noosa National Park, back along A-Bay, over to Sunshine Beach and a big breakfast at The Deck; Sunday lunch and music at Bohemian Bungalow in Eumundi; picnic rug, friends and dancing in the sun at Peregian Originals; tennis beside the Noosa River (where else can you volley with a view like that); plus canoeing and camping in the upper reaches of the Noosa Everglades. The night sky, moon and stars reflect as sharply in the ‘river of mirrors’ as the daytime landscape. There’s nothing like it.
