Out & About GREAT TIMES & EVENTS

Exhibition almost a sell-out…

W

ith organic wines and delectable hors d'oeuvres consumed by the eager guests at the Poeta art exhibition in Hastings Street recently. Artist Belinda Herford and Jeweller husband Gordon were the perfect hosts as guests eagerly viewed Belinda's new works and discussed the stories behind each piece. Red dots started appearing even before the doors had opened, and with most paintings sold and a couple of new commissions organised on the night and next morning; it will be exciting to see where Belinda's direction flows in future exhibitions.

2017 Noosa Food and Wine

A

ll eyes were on the new-look event this year, which turned Noosa into a frenzy of food and wine events.Visitors and locals alike were eager to take up the ticket allocation for foodie fun. Local Celebrity chef, Peter Kuruvita and our Editor and conscientious food and wine writer, Kaylene Murray were busy casting their watchful eyes over the set-up of the Hastings Street, Long Lunch. Highlights included: Noosa Waterfront Restaurant hosted the Porkstar lunch; Champagne queen Bernadette O’Shea and winewriter Ken Gargett hosted a Champagne Masterclass at Sofitel Noosa.

Snail of Approval Program launched…

I

t was an early call…to the Cooking School Noosa in Quamby Place recently, where Slow Food Noosa President, Erika Hackett explained to waiting food journalists, chefs and local producers about the new focus of Slow Food Noosa. Invitees enjoyed freshly baked scones with Cooloola Berries yummy strawberry jam and thick (but runny!) local cream (a bit of a challenge on a chilly morning!), as well as fresh mulberries from Honeysuckle Farm and lime in Bincho-tan mineral water. So healthy…so Slow Food!

Young mum the new face of Nine News Sunshine Coast... old enough to s a w d o o w th a e H porting it. t Samantha From the momennews, she wanted to be the one re understand the Story: Nicole Madigan

"I was so obsessed with journalism from a very young age and used to make all my friends do mock TV bulletins in my bedroom," says Ms Heathwood.

"I love the beach and the Noosa Heads surf, the glorious sunshine, the restaurants and delicious food (with a view!) – it’s just the whole vibe of the place!"

o to be named the new face of Nine News on the Sunshine Coast is a dream come true for the mother of two.

S

Of course, from a news perspective, the vibrant, buzzing Sunshine Coast continues to provide, with massive growth expected over the next 20 years.

"It’s an incredible opportunity, and I’m honoured to have been chosen for this position.

"I’m so excited to be a part of a brand new news team that’s going to be at the forefront of that, engaging with these communities as they grow and develop."

"I am a passionate proponent of regional news, I think the role of local news in small communities is vital – it helps form the fabric of those cities, making the issues of the day relevant to the people they impact." Since those early days of bedroom reporting, Ms Heathwood's love for television news has only grown. "The difference between television news and other media is the pictures and the people. "I love that we get to tell our stories through pictures, because we know a picture tells a thousand words – so we can convey so much more. "And being able to personalise a story, and find out the people whose lives are impacted and hear from them directly makes television so powerful."

Ms Heathwood's role will involve reading the news for 7 major regional Queensland cities and their surrounds. It’s a huge role. And one that Ms Heathwood intends to work around her two sons James, 6 and Henry, 3. "It’s hard doing the home/work/school/ juggle, and I’m a single mum so it just means I have to be super organised, and I rely on my family and my children’s dad for support. "I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them." For Ms Heathwood, despite the joys of her fast-paced career, her children come first. "Earlier in my career, I barely saw my eldest son because I was determined to ensure having a family didn’t make me a “less valuable” employee.

And what better place to do so than in beautiful Noosa? "I grew up going to Noosa for family holidays, so it holds very, very special memories for me.

"But when I had my second son I put my career on hold for 18 months." continues following pages

From the moment Samantha was old enough to understand the news, she wanted to be the one reporting it.

continues from previous pages

Ms Heathwood initially went back to work as a part-time reporter, with this opportunity coming up at just the right time. The nature of news means Ms Heathwood sometimes has to drop everything and get to work, leaving family to make the mad scramble to ensure the boys are cared for. Despite the difficulties, Ms Heathwood says the juggle is well worth it. "I love finishing the day and knowing you’ve done a good job, done something that’s helped or informed or impacted the lives of people in the community. "Helped right a wrong, pushed for questions to be answered, and brought about change – that’s why we love what we do."

INCREASING THE PACE IN NOOSA... Inspired by the iconic dance moves of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and the accompanying music with which he was raised, local foodie and owner of Rococo Bistro Noosa Richard Pace has plans to shake up Noosa’s dining scene, adding intimacy, late-night dining and a touch of cabaret to the menu... Story Nicole Madigan Photo Peter Trainer ICON Studio

H

aving grown up in Melbourne, the lure of Noosa life and the appeal of his family’s hospitality business prompted Pace to make the move up North, where he would eventually launch Rococo on Hastings Street. “Combining food and wine with ambience and design is what appeals to me. All my favourite restaurants/bars around the world are atmospheric, musical and represent their location. “I love the idea of a venue that allows you to not just sit and eat conservatively but rather offers all types of options from dining, casual drinks in the bar, dancing, mingling to late night coffee and dessert, live ensembles, super and street parties.” That’s exactly what Rococo does. And according to Pace, Noosa is the perfect spot to do it.

“Noosa is paradise and Hastings street is its pinnacle “I like how locals can interact with holiday makers, I love alfresco dining, I like the multiple dining precincts....the sunshine beach village, Noosaville and its riverside dining, the junction for something a little quicker and the buzz of Hastings street.” While Pace’s enthusiasm for Noosa is clear, he laments the unique character of the dining precincts during the 90s which he says has been lost thanks to continual increases in commercial rents. “As rents have increased, so has the decline in those cool personalised venues that gave Noosa a culinary status. “One thing I'd also like to see progress is late night dining. All over the world people choose to dine at various times in the evening and many post 10pm.” continues next page....

NS While Rococo is already a unique spot on Hastings Street, Pace says he plans to bring even more character to his corner. “Jazz, show tunes, cabaret....big events, fun and interactive.” As part of his long term goal to add a little spice to Noosa’s dining scene, Pace and Rococo are hosting a four day event as part of this year’s Noosa Alive festival. The event will showcase a variety of amazing performances and include cabaret dinners, workshops, beach parties and children's activities. “Events are important to me and each year Rococo puts huge emphasis on creating unique and quirky worlds for our local friends and Noosa visitors to experience. “The Rococo Beach Club Marquee will be like entering another world. “There will be colour and life.... pianos, orchestras, a string ensemble, ballet, flamenco, dance and song mixed with DJs, bars, cocktails, canapés, local personalities and spellbinding performers.” Pace says he planned the event in an attempt to liven up a notoriously quiet time of the year while giving the community a new perspective in entertainment.

INCREASING THE PACE IN NOOSA...

The hero function of the event will be the 'FLYING down to Rio' party held on the Saturday night. “'Flying down to Rio' was the very first time Fred and Ginger met on the big screen....they were both playing supporting roles but their influence and on screen chemistry was so strong that they stole the show and paved the way to becoming musical and dance immortals. “Flying down to Rio on main beach will encompass everything from the 1930's 'Carioca' and 'Continental' to contemporary latin beats, DJs and dancers that encourages movement, crowd participation and most of all, fun.” So dedicated to the cause, Pace is funding the extravaganza himself. “I'm hoping to give non locals further reason to visit our great town in July and to soak up some winter sun while being engaged culturally with the Noosa alive program. “Participants can expect fun, decadence, interaction, music, song, dance, food, wine and cocktails!” So, with all of this on the horizon, what’s next for Pace? “A holiday.” A well deserved one at that. Ever ything you need by the river

T

he area reaches from Gympie Terrace and Thomas Street to adjacent precincts such as Gibson Road and Gateway Drive. Throughout this wondrous shopping precinct you will find almost anything your heart could desire, from the boutiques offering the latest local and international brands, imported shoes and accessories to restaurants that offer diners the best seasonal menus available; from interior design and homewares emporiums to hair and beauty salons waiting to complement your new season look; from quiet book shops to trendy bars with amazing mixologists waiting to tempt you. Add to that the natural beauty of the area, where from sunrise to sunset along the park that runs adjacent to the Noosa River (known as the 'golden mile') -, you'll see a passing parade of people walking their dogs, others taking the time to amble along watching the boats as they motor or sail past; devotees of tai chi and yoga carefully going through their movements; and others enjoying a quiet cup of coffee with friends; while mothers and holiday makers take their little ones for a walk or ride under the bowers of towering trees. Along the foreshore, helpful information centre staff will book tours for you to visit Fraser Island (the world's largest sand island, and home to Australia's purest dingos), as well as trips to the mystical Everglades, or themed cruises. Little brown ducks waddle along happily as they wait for a new friend to share their lunch with them; as seagulls squall high above and around any picnickers table. With playgrounds and exercise equipment, as well as electric barbecues, and covered table and bench seating positioned around the area, it is the perfect place for a family get together.

26

NoosaStyleLiving

The carefree nature of the area is mirrored by the gentle wings of the pelicans as they soar high above before coasting in to the shoreline in search of the prime position for sleeping or checking out the chance of catching a fish down below; as those wishing to spend some time on the water hire kayaks, paddle boards, small boats and pontoons from the local boat shed operators. If not so inclined, you can still enjoy the river by hopping aboard the ferry for a leisurely cruise. All this and only 10 minutes drive from Hastings Street. What are you waiting for?

Once thought of as a quiet riverside precinct, Noosaville has grown and evolved into a small, friendly metropolis of fabulous cafĂŠs and restaurants, and boasting an eclectic mix of stunning shopping opportunities for savvy consumers.

L

ouis Armstrong famously sang “When you’re smiling the whole world smiles with you” and he was right. Endorphins are released when you smile which make us feel happy and less stressed. Smiling also makes the people around you feel great. Children just naturally smile and laugh, but as we get older it’s easy to become conscious of stained and crooked teeth, and the smiling stops. Cosmetic

dentistry such as Whitening, Orthodontics and Veneers can be used to create the smile you have always deserved. If nature did not award you a beautiful smile, there is no reason why you can’t have one. At Divine Dental, our dentists have the skill and experience to help you achieve the perfect smile for you.

Smile Design Consolations are complementary and if you simply have not been to the dentist for a while, Comprehensive Exam, Scale and Clean is just $149, or Gap Free if you are in a health fund.

hen choosing new spectacle frames, first impressions are all on the frame choice. So who are YOU? Jimmy Choo, Fendi, Bolle, Maui Jim? You can whittle down your list by working out firstly what you need them to do. Are they purely for reading, workplace, full time or even for fashion, golf or fishing. Maybe comfort is high on your priority list. As with a pair of shoes, the same pair that you wear to the office won’t take you to the gym. Eyewear should repeat your personal best feature (such as a blue frame to match blue eyes). The frame shape should contrast with your face shape and be in scale with your face size. At Options Eyecare we have a variety of spectacle frames to meet your needs and with new frames arriving in store all the time, the choice becomes yours. Our experienced, dedicated team can assist you in finding the perfect frame and look you are wanting to achieve.

Eloise... a t s i n o i h s a f Our little

High Tea is all the rage, especially in the cooler months

New from Buckle Jr. 1922 The perfect Bow Tie for the perfect little gentleman. Our Baby Hipster, Emerson gives them his seal of approval on the fashion scene.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR FLYING WITH YOUR BABY… Family travel expert and inventor of award-winning product CoziGo, Emma Lovell, shares her top 10 tips for a stress-free holiday with your bub. 1. Research your airline – all airlines are not created equally when it comes to flying with a family, some really do go that extra mile! Check out their offerings with regard to the size of their baby bassinets and maximum weight of the baby that can go inside it, whether they offer specially designed children’s meals, activities for the kids and extra help whilst you need another set of hands. Some allow free infant checked in baggage allowance, child head sets and free stroller use on arrival whilst at their hub – it’s worth doing thorough research before booking your flights. 2. Consider the time of the day the flight leaves – try and book a flight (if you can) for when your child would normally sleep. Perhaps an evening departure would work best for your baby? Or if they’re great day sleepers, then a day flight might suit them better. 3. Give thought to how you’ll carry your baby and your hand luggage – by having bub in a baby carrier, and a backpack with your flight essentials, you’ll have two free hands to navigate security, manage older kids, and look after passports/boarding passes etc. 4. Be prepared for take off and landing by offering baby the breast, a bottle or a dummy. The change in air pressure can affect their little ears at these times and sucking will alleviate any pain. 5. When booking your airline tickets, make sure you book a baby bassinet

30

NoosaStyleLiving

Hipster Emerson prefers a bow tie to a bib when hitting the bars around town... doesn’t fall into his dinner apparently...

(bed provided by the airline at the bulkhead of the aircraft) – this leaves baby to sleep while you can look after older kids, or catch up on a movie yourself. Be sure to pack a CoziGo Sleep Cover. This nifty device is a domeshape pop up cover the clips to the bassinet, blocks light and all the crazy distractions on the plane and allows baby to sleep on their normal routine. It also doubles as a universal stroller cover once you begin your holiday so you can keep your baby on routine throughout the trip. 6. Pack spare clothes for baby and kids, but remember to pack a spare top for you too – accidents happen! 7. Create Nappy Packs – Rather than lugging a big nappy bag into the very small cubicle toilet every time a change is needed, I packed 10 nappy bags – each on containing one nappy and a few wipes. That way, when you need to change baby on board, you can quickly grab a preprepared bag of essentials. 8. Consider packing a small bag with your essentials for the flight that you can keep at your feet (nappies, wipes, toys, snacks etc). If the seat belt sign is on, you have everything you need within reach. 9. Planes can get very cold – dress yourself and baby in layers that can be easily added to and removed. 10. Take some comfort items for baby – toys that he/she is already familiar with, their sleeping bag, a blanket, and don’t forget their comforter. This way, they still have all their regular sleep cues at bedtime. Emma concludes: "Above all, try not to worry about flying with a baby – be as prepared as you can be, work off baby’s cues for feed/sleep/play, and remember that you’re doing all you can to keep baby happy on board. You got this – now go and make some memories!"

Winter Hair Guide By Liz Kramar Hairdresser & makeup artist Icon Studios

A

good diet and lifestyle is the foundation for having great hair, so if you know you've been slipping in this department, it's time to pay attention to your inner health. To grow your hair and have it healthy, you personally must be as healthy as possible to begin with.

All the standards of good health apply - a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting substantial rest and exercise are the best ways to start. Whatever goes through your body goes through your hair and it's the balance of overall health and nutrition that makes up the foundation for healthy hair. Include plenty of essential fatty acids in your diet as this will help improve the lustre of your hair, you need these good fats for a healthy scalp and hair, as a deficiency will leave your scalp flaky and your hair dull and dry. Salon care Regular trips to the salon will help keep your hair in peak condition all year round. It's important to keep your hair trimmed at all times, but in winter the extra styling and blowdrying can encourage split ends, so keep regular appointments at your salon. If you colour your hair be sure to add regular deep treatments to your regime; as this will also keep your hair healthy. I highly recommend Keratin smoothing treatments; these treatments repair the hair by 90% and eliminate frizz making the hair healthy, smooth and frizz free for 3-5 months in one sitting. At-home maintenance Hair is most susceptible to drying out in winter, due to a combination of dry indoor heat and cold outdoor air. These conditions strip the cuticle of moisture, so it's important to try to combat this. Use a mild, nourishing shampoo that's gentle on the hair and avoid washing your hair every day to prevent stripping it of natural oils. Try washing hair every 2-4 days if possible. In between visits to the salon, maintain your hair health by applying regular intensive treatments which are moisture based. Nourishing oils such as Argan oil are also very beneficial to the hair. Soothe your scalp Cold weather and hot showers can wreak havoc on your

poor, fragile scalp. Like your hair, your scalp can suffer from lack of moisture. Using treatments will help your scalp as well as your hair when it's feeling sensitive, specialist moisturising shampoo and conditioners can help treat dryness and flakes. Ask your stylist for best recommendations. Choosing your winter colour Deciding between blond, brown, and red is tough enough without considering the spectrum of tones that exist within those hues. And then you have to think which of those shades works best for your complexion? But understanding undertone can actually make the difference between choosing a good hair colour and your most flattering shade ever—and with a little help, it's actually not that hard to figure out. Understanding your skin tone Before taking your pick of hair colours, you need to ID your skin's undertones. Most people fall into one of three categories: warm, cool, and neutral. Figuring out where your complexion lies can seem confusing, but there are a few tricks: Look for specific colours- Cool-toned skin has pink and olive undertones, while warm-toned skin has yellow and gold; a combination of any of the above? You're probably neutral. Match yourself with a celebrity- When you're looking for A-list colour inspiration, try to pick out people with similar skin and eye colouring to your own. It will give you a much better idea of how the colour choice will actually look on you in the end. Your eye colour If you have a lot of gold specks in your eyes, usually your undertones are warm; if you have a lot of blues and greens, then you are usually cool." Hair colour that will flatter your complexion-Pick a tone that's opposite from your skin's undertones. Those with warm undertones might opt for a cooler colour, and vice versa. The degree to which this matters varies from hair colour to hair colour, but it's a good guideline to remember. And if you have neutral skin, you're a lucky minority as everything looks good on you.

With one of the world’s highest rates of dog ownership, Australia is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the health benefits of owning a dog.

M

ore than 40% of households in Australia own at least one dog and with this comes a whole host of health benefits. For one, dog owners are better at dealing with stressful events, and this helps them avoid anxiety-related illnesses. “Dogs really are man’s best friend!” says clinical psychologist and dog owner, Dr Samantha Clarke. “As well as being wonderful companions, research has shown that owning a dog can have a number of psychological benefits. Dog owners report less depression and cope with grief and stress better than non-dog owners. A dog can lift our spirits when we feel low.” Dogs encourage their owners to stay active and get them outdoors through regular walks. Kids with dogs also spend more time doing moderate to vigorous physical activity than children without dogs. The recent International ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day’ gave employers the opportunity to open their businesses to pet dogs, and it proved to be a very positive experience for both workers and for dogs alike. “There are so many benefits for having your pet at work, such as reducing stress and opportunities for exercise and movement. Having your dog at work encourages small mindful breaks, which are all linked to reduced burn-out and increased productivity. Dogs can also promote connection and communication between staff members building team cohesion. It creates a work place that is warm, flexible and open.” says Dr Samantha Clarke. CEO of pet food company Ivory Coat, Steven Deveraux-Stanford, champions a pet friendly office and brings his own dog, Cooper, to the workplace every day. “We invite all our staff to bring their companions into our office, especially the well-behaved ones. We notice that it has a positive effect on morale in the office, decreases stress and tension, and is also a great ice-breaker with visiting clients,” says Steven. “I would always encourage employers to consider animals in the workplace, as it really does offer positives in an office environment. Cooper has recently been doing visits to aged care homes, and we've seen first-hand the sheer

joy he brings, as well as aiding some residents to open up with facility carers. I believe Cooper loves it too!” Nicole, owner of Nicole Horn Hair in Noosa, brings her dog Jess to her workplace most days. “Having Jess at work is great for myself and staff as well. Jess keeps us on our toes but also brings so much joy, and it's always a much more relaxed environment for both staff and clients. Our clients love seeing Jess’s wagging tail and find her presence calming. She’s pretty demanding of pats - so they don’t really have a choice.” If you dine at the iconic Rococo Bistro in Hastings Street, you'll no doubt have seen Gypsy the Border Collie quietly sleeping in the corner, as her human (Rococo owner) Richard Pace goes about his business. She is definitely always ready for a pat and friendly word.

ier! h t l a e h s u e k Dogs ma And, of course NOOSA Style Magazine has always had a dog-friendly policy. We couldn't produce our beautiful magazine without the canine assistance of our Labrador Suki, and Art Director Joshua's Bull Arab, Alaska. Things to keep in mind when bringing your dog to the office: • Check with your office to see if bringing your dog to work is allowed. Some work environments may not be appropriate. • Ensure your dog is healthy, up to date with vaccinations, and identified with tags and microchip. • The dog should be well trained and socialised with other dogs and people. • Ensure the office environment is safe for a dog. • Supervise your dog and make sure they won't be able to escape, or get into anyone’s lunch! There are many business that have already adopted a policy of letting their employees take their dogs to work, and they have found that it has increased the productivity of their workplaces as well as the happiness of their employees.

2017 Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival celebrates 10 years… If you are a fashionista, fashion tragic, or simply a lover of clothes… there will be something to tantalise you at this year's 10th anniversar y Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival.

W

hat began as a fashion parade poolside at Surfair Resort, Marcoola all those years ago, with the support of just twelve local labels - and the uber-cool fashion name of the time - Ed Hardy, has grown and evolved to become Queensland’s only premiere fashion event. Now in it’s 10th year, the Festival promises to be bigger and more stylish than ever - and its events are on target to sell out quickly. Since 2008, the event has grown from strength to strength, now incorporating Catwalk Shows, a Trade Lounge (pop up spaces with brands selling wholesale) an industry Q & A, plus The Sunshine Coast Style Awards, the Sunshine Coast Design Awards - and Hall of Fame. Founder & Director Jacinta Richmond says;“the organic growth of the event, along with the strong support of designers, dedicated volunteer organisers and the media, is what has gotten us to our 10th year.”

38

NoosaStyleLiving

With local, national and international labels involved, the event is recognised globally for its discovery of emerging talent, and the opportunities they have to network with national and international established brands. The choice of the 2017 Model Ambassador was another bold move for this ever-evolving event - Charles Anthony Hall, of Factor 1 Models Australia and Chadwicks Models. The catwalk line-up announcements are already creating ripples within the fashion industry, with models wearing creations by big names including Nicola Finetti, Sunflair (Germany), NVK Daydoll (Milan), Myer and a host of others from the Sunshine Coast, Australia and Internationally. This year also includes the launch of a coffee table book in celebration of the last 10 years. “A focus on quality national and international brands will see us into our 10th anniversary year. It’s a brilliant opportunity for a select few emerging talents to showcase alongside established labels. With applications to showcase coming in fast from designers around the Sunshine Coast and internationally, it won’t be long until we have filled the line up for 2017.” Ms Richmond said The Sunshine Coast International Fashion Festival, held in the millionaire’s playground that is the Sunshine Coast, is not to be missed. Applications to show and pre-sale tickets are now available. Open to both industry and public, the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival offers an exciting, fashion and style for everyone. 2017

Noosa Food & Wine Festival...

. . . . e r e h e r e w Wish you

From the moment it began the 2017 NF&W event was on-target to get foodies excited about the region's fabulous local producers, ocean-fresh seafood, meats, dairy and artisan goodies. lthough the weather was a bit of a worry at the start - Friday was the only day touched by wet weather. For the rest of the weekend the sun shone brightly as if to crown the event and give it her blessing.

A

With a multi-layered array of events at this year's Noosa Food & Wine - from the Opening night party in the huge white Tippi on the beachfront (rain optional) - to the host of luncheons, dinners and regional tasting tours, attendees were able to satiate their inner chef/winemaker/new age producer. Local restaurants opened their doors to interstate chefs to work in unison with their own chefs and kitchen teams, to create memorable dining events that worshipped our region's capabilities. The influx of big names included Frank Camorra, Adriana Zumbo, Ben O'Donohue, Tony Percuoco, Spencer Patrick and Ben Williamson.

Some highlights of the event included: Porkstar Lunch at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant When is too much pork a bad thing? Never obviously. Guest chefs Spencer Patrick from Harrisons Port Douglas and 'Buddha' Lo from Matteo's in Melbourne, joined Chef/owner Andrea Ravezzani to create five fabulous courses of pork that would not only bring a 'grown man to his knees' but also have a 'grown woman' attempting to break into the Guinness Book of Records for the consumption of pork. Ha Ha.

52

NoosaStyleLiving

With the addition of beautiful wines from Seven Hills in South Australia we were able to tackle the mammoth meal that included Pork Hocks, Pork Belly, Suckling Pork and two exceptional desserts that unbelievably were created with pork as well. Salmon at Sunset in the River Lounge at Sofitel Resort Noosa If you've ever wondered how to fillet a pristine King Ora Salmon, then you should have been at the Sofitel, to see how an expert can re-imagine a fish and then create a deconstructed one in the blink of an eye, to create a few oh-so-fresh taste sensations from salmon sashimi to grilled salmon

floating in a tantalising Asian-inspired broth. The Long Table Lunch in Hastings Street. It's not often that you have the opportunity to shut down half of frenetic Hastings Street on a Saturday - but that's just what happened for lucky diners. Twelve of Noosa's favourite restaurants took to the streets to serve and deliver lunch and wine on a beautiful Sunshine State day. Guests were dressed to impress and definitely ready to party, eat and raise a glass to the gods of food and wine.

Words: Kaylene Murray Photos: Tom Murray & Kaylene Murray

Champagne Masterclass at Sofitel Resort Noosa Australia's doyen of Champagne, Bernadette O'Shea (the most decorated female authority on Champagne) had lucky guests falling off their seats with laughter, as she guided us through a bountiful bevy of exceptional Champagnes - and treated us to her opinion on Sauvignon Blanc - blah! spit spit!! "How can anyone drink a wine that can be in a bottle for only four months before drinking?" "Champagne ages for years and years to achieve its rightful place as the world's most adored wine!" she said. Co-host and accredited wine writer, Ken Gargett was careful to remain silent. I just loved this class and was so sorry to have to rush off to another event instead of staying behind to finish any open bottles with my longtime friend and teacher of all things Champagne. Can't wait for next year, I'll plan my time better. Oysters and Sparkling at CafĂŠ La Monde Where a multitude of bivalve mollusks devotees scoffed what must have been thousands of Wapengo Rocks Oysters, as Shane Buckley and team added a diverse range of tasty toppings. Luckily Helen McCarthy from Mountadam Wines was there to fill glasses with quality sparkling and help to wash down the curious little critters. The Woods Precinct What better way to spend a weekend than wandering around a park, listening to music, tasting interesting food and savouring a glass of wine carefully chosen from an eclectic array of sensational Australian wineries. It didn't matter to anyone that the ground was a little damp - sensible shoes and a penchant for good fun was all that was needed to make a great day out for families. If you missed it this year, be sure to mark it in your iCal - and if you're returning for another taste of Noosa, we'll be waiting to impress again in 2018.

The highly anticipated, first restaurant from celebrity chef Matt Sinclair and his teammates Jeremiah Jones, Michael 'Moe' Rickard and Dylan Campbell has opened in Sunshine Beach. Matt told guests at the recent opening night party, that the restaurant is a dream come true for the four lifelong friends; and although it was incredibly tough getting the whole restaurant finished on such a tight schedule, the fact that they had the assistance of family and friends pitching in to help, gives these 'yung' guys the confidence and drive to succeed.

FOR LOVERS OF FOOD & WINE

Australia’s largest Slow Food convivium, Slow Food Noosa, will take the region to the world with the arrival of the “Snail of Approval” recognition program.

Above: Wasabi co-owner Danielle Gjestland Left: Kim and Jason Lewis, Cooloola Berries

T

he program is designed to inspire producers, chefs, restaurant owners and food outlets to produce, use and promote good, clean and fair practices and ingredients from the local area – and to recognise and highlight the ones who already follow this philosophy. An Australian-first, the “Snail of Approval” is expected to reach more than one million global Slow Food supporters in more than 160 countries as well as provide a quality assurance guide for residents and visitors on the local leaders. Slow Food Noosa President Erika Hackett said the program would incorporate farmers, producers, food artisans, chefs, restaurants and food providers from the Sunshine Coast to the Cooloola Coast. Successful applicants also have the opportunity to be registered on the Slow Food Planet App for free. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said “I applaud Slow Food Noosa on this new initiative highlighting the Noosa’s producers, food outlets and restaurants that are using seasonal ingredients,

56

NoosaStyleLiving

sourcing local food and taking responsibility for their carbon footprint through waste management and highlighting low food miles”. “Noosa has long been recognised as a serious food destination and our brand research into our key interstate markets shows food is a stand out part of Noosa’s visitor appeal with sought after experiences ranging from dining, food markets, cooking schools and visiting farm gates, showcasing locally grown and made food, creating authentic Noosa experiences. I encourage Noosa operators to get onboard with the Snail of Approval program which will undoubtedly further enhance Noosa’s appeal as a great food destination”. The criteria for recognition is based on the Slow Food overarching philosophy of good, clean and fair. In addition to the global recognition through Slow Food’s membership and the Slow Food Planet App, successful applicants will receive a certificate and window sticker or building/farmgate sign to assist locals and visitors to easily recognise those who have the “Snail of Approval”. Founder and co-owner of The Wasabi Group (which includes the esteemed Wasabi restaurant, The Cooking School Noosa and Honeysuckle Hill Farm) Danielle Gjestland said receiving the Snail of

Approval would provide an avenue to receive global recognition and to reach discerning diners who are interested in seasonal, regional and responsible dining. “It has always been a goal to make a positive difference and to act responsibly in everything that we do,” she said. “They are a leading example of paddockto-plate-to-paddock and are one of the region’s shining lights because of this. We are proud to have them as part of this program.” Mrs Hackett said Cooloola Berries offered a great example of how responsible and ethical farming can benefit the whole community. She said. “They share their passion for farming with school children, tour groups and visitors to the farm. The successful recipients for Round One “Snail of Approval” were announced at an official ceremony on 20 June.with Slow Food Noosa casting the net wider for Round Two applicants closing on 30 August. More information and the online application form can be found on the Slow Food Noosa website www.slowfoodnoosa.com and while it is free to apply, applicants should be Slow Food members which costs around $90 per year.

hef/owner Frank Boulay of Periwinkle Restaurant in Peregian Beach, seduces diners with a taste of authentic, French bistro-style cooking using fresh, locally grown produce, supplemented by the very best ingredients available. With a leaning towards delicious fresh seafood, hand-crafted sourdough breads, char-grilled beef and local seasonal vegetables, as well as poultry and vegetarian options, the menu offers a tantalising taste of France without the price of a plane ticket. We were excited by the menu which offered such delights as Alsacian Specialty (a French pizza); Assiette de Charcuterie with duck rillette, parma ham, finnocchiona, cacciatorini, cornichon and grilled sourdough; Plump Scallops that were sweet and succulent; Steak Fritte a char-grilled Cape Grim sirloin steak, caramelised échallote, pomme frittes with truffle oil and parmesan, green salad and bordelaise sauce; and finish off with a traditional Crepes Suzette. The casual but classy Chef/owner of inside/outside dining options and Periwinkle Frank comprehensive wine list, fit well with the beachy seaside village feel of Peregian Beach. The perfect spot for a relaxing breakfast, leisurely luncheon or romantic dinner.

ith its towering Norfolk Pines nestled along the shoreline park, and the many wonders of nature in the surrounding National Parks and pristine beach, that form the world-recognised Noosa Biosphere, it is now wonder that Peregian Beach is so popular. Just over the sandhills at the southern end of the beach you'll find Peregian Environmental Park, an area of Wallum Heath, which bursts into a colourful profusion of wildflowers in Spring. On the western side is Lake Weyba National Park and Lake Weyba which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. The area is rich with native wildlife and flora. Its friendly village atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle, makes Peregian Beach a favourite destination for savvy locals and clever tourists, who are seeking a quiet shopping experience away from the bustle of Noosa Heads. Peregian Beach offers visitors an excellent selection of casual and trendy restaurants, bars, cafés and take-aways dotted all around the central, village square - all inter-connected by quaint lanes and pathways. Visitors are free to choose the perfect spot for a coffee, luncheon or dinner. And, those wanting a picnic or fish'n'chips in the park are well catered for as well. Tables and seating are dotted around the area to make it easy to take a little break, when seeking out the bargains on offer at the surrounding boutiques. A market day is held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, when live music attracts large crowds to the to the lawn infront of the Peregian Beach Surf Club. over the top and seal with the lid. Bring the cooker up to pressure, then reduce the heat to low and cook for 45 minutes. Remove from the heat, release the pressure on the cooker and allow the contents to rest with the lid on for 5 minutes. Note: if you do not have a pressure cooker, use a stockpot in its place and cook the lamb curry on a low heat, simmering for 2-3 hours.

CUCUMBER SALAD: 1 continental cucumber, deseeded and diced ½ cup unsalted peanuts, toasted and coarsely crushed ½ cup desiccated coconut, toasted 1 tablespoon lemon juice ¼ bunch of coriander, roughly chopped ½ teaspoon black mustard seeds 6 curry leaves 1 long green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

SPICED POTATOES: 5 large desiree potatoes 1 tablespoon of butter 1 teaspoon brown mustard seeds 2 tablespoons curry powder freshly ground black pepper 1 long green chilli, thinly sliced 4 spring onions, finely sliced Method: • Remove the cooked potatoes from the fridge and cut into large dice, heat a drizzle of oil and the butter in a large fry pan over high heat, add the potato and sauté for 2 minutes, before adding the mustard seeds, curry powder and a large pinch of salt and pepper. Continue frying for another 5 minutes, tossing regularly. Finally, add the chilli and spring onion, toss to combine and transfer to a serving bowl. • Remove the lid from the pressure cooker, carefully take out the lamb shanks, keeping the bone intact. Set aside while you finish the sauce. • Using a slotted spoon, fish out the cinnamon stick, curry leaves and cardamom pods from the curry sauce. Add the remaining coconut cream and blitz with a stick blender until smooth. Season with salt. • Set out four large serving bowls, place a lamb shank in each and evenly cover with the curry sauce. Serve with the potatoes, coconut cucumber salad and mango chutney.

NS Spice Up Your Winter Health With The Amazing Turmeric By Scott Mathias CHHC. AADP

I

n the spice rainbow, the bright yellow is the curcumin, or as you may probably know it – the turmeric. Adored in the world of modern natural health and nutrition, turmeric's popularity is currently in its ascendancy. With its ancient traditional history of Chinese and Indian medicine and with outstanding healing properties, no wonder people all around the world have turned to turmeric and they just can't get enough! The Secret Is In The Pigment More potent than its volatile oil is the yellow / orange pigment of turmeric; numerous studies have shown turmeric to be comparable and even more effective than over-the-counter drugs, but without the side effects. Why, because curcumin produces no toxicity.

clean green vegan cuisine

A Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Symptoms Turmeric may provide an inexpensive, effective treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. Relief for Rheumatoid Arthritis Clinical studies have confirmed that as an antioxidant, curcumin is able to neutralize free radicals – chemicals that travel through the body and cause damage to healthy cells. This is important in many diseases, such as arthritis, where free radicals are responsible for the painful joint inflammation and eventuate in great damage to the joints. Cancer Prevention Turmeric's medicinal properties enable it to protect the body from free radicals that can damage cellular DNA—a significant benefit particularly in the colon where cell turnover is quite rapid. Because of their frequent replication, mutations in the DNA of colon cells can result in the formation of cancerous cells more rapidly. Turmeric Halts Prostate Cancer Researchers have found that the combination turmeric and cruciferous vegetables including cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, kohlrabi and turnips, may also be an effective therapy to not only to prevent prostate cancer, but also to inhibit the spread of established prostate cancer cells. Improved Liver Function In a recent study conducted to evaluate the effects of turmeric on the liver's ability to detoxify chemicals. Researchers commented, "The results suggest that turmeric may increase detoxification systems in addition to its anti-oxidant properties...Turmeric used widely as a spice would probably mitigate the effects of several dietary carcinogens." Protects Cardiovascular and Lowers Cholesterol Turmeric may be able to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the body. In research published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, when 10 healthy volunteers consumed 500 mg of curcumin per day for 7 days, not only did their blood levels of oxidized cholesterol drop by 33%, but their total cholesterol dropped 11.63% , and their HDL (good cholesterol) increased by 29%! TRUE FRENCH CREPES SUZETTE ‌are thought of as a decadent dessert, but we know that they are just perfect at any time! Ingredients: 1 cup plain flour 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup less 1 tablespoon water 2 eggs 2 tablespoons butter, melted 2 teaspoons fresh orange juice 1 ½ teaspoons orange zest 1/4 teaspoon salt Butter Orange Syrup: Orange syrup: 250g butter, chopped 4 tablespoons granulated sugar 4 ounces Grand Marnier Vanilla ice cream/ fresh whipped cream

Method: Whisk all the ingredients vigorously until the crepe batter is completely smooth; allow the batter to rest in the fridge for at least 20 mins. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a crepe pan or large skillet over a low-med heat. Add 3 tablespoons batter to pan and swirl to form a thin coating over the base of pan. Cook crepe for 1 minute or until it is slightly moist on top and golden brown underneath. Loosen the edges of the crepe, slide the spatula under it, and then gently flip it upside down into the pan. Cook for 1 minute and transfer the cooked crepe to a plate to keep warm. Repeat the process with the remaining batter. In a large pan set over medium heat,

melt half of the butter until it foams. Remove the pan from the heat and sprinkle the half the sugar over the melted butter. Add half the Grand Marnier, handling the pan carefully because of the flame, and then add the crepes to the pan to coat both sides in the orange syrup. Fold the crepes into quarters, roll them into cylinders or simply arrange artistically around plate. Melt the remaining butter in the pan, remove it from the heat, and then add the sugar and Grand Marnier to make more orange syrup. Place a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream next to each creape and drizzle with lusciously alcoholic orange syrup. Makes 6-8 serves

unshine Coast winters are a glorious time of year, and a particularly bountiful time as far as produce goes. But with the emergence of a few cooler nights of late, thoughts turn to ways to warm the mind and soul. While most would turn to the warmth of a fire or perhaps a traditional winter warmer in the way of soup or other such comfort food, others, like me, will turn to the warmest of friends – chocolate. Indeed, not just any chocolate will do, and with the recent discovery of Kokopod Chocolate, I have lifted my chocolate bar even higher. Kokopod Chocolate is deliciously divine. Made by the lovely Brigid Woolnough in her Buderim based chocolate studio, she brings a decadent golden touch to her chocolates that make them not only taste exquisite, but also appease the eye. The Gold Digger Honeycomb is extravagantly dusted with shimmering gold, the Raspberry Fever with a ruby red scattering of real raspberries, and the Macnuts coated with a fabulous thick layer of chocolate on a caramel crunch. Winter will never feel as cold again! Another recent discovery was that of Caz Owens’ Organica Floret Rose Farm in Eudlo. Caz grows chemical free heritage roses for the food industry (and anyone who loves heritage and Dave Austin roses). Those magnificent wedding cakes and decadent desserts with full frilly rose blossoms; chances are they come from Caz’s garden. The roses are not only edible, but they are incredibly fragrant – not to mention breathtakingly beautiful. While the rose farm is not open to the public, they do occasionally have open days, so keep an eye open for that as this is one incredibly special garden. With the topic of food waste on everyone’s lips it is great to see so many local initiatives, one in particular is Spare Harvest.

64

NoosaStyleLiving

Now, this is an initiative that everyone can take part in. Helen Andrew, the passion behind this community food/garden surplus sharing resource, created Spare Harvest as a way to share the bountiful harvest of her own backyard. There are dozens of amateur (and not so amateur) growers on the Sunshine Coast alone, growing or producing wondrous bounties that would otherwise go to waste. Search the website for what is available in your area, or share, swap or sell your own excess fruit, vegetables, herbs, or whatever your backyard may produce.

going joy as compost for the garden.

It is a wonderful way of connecting with other growers and it will, if not reduce your own food waste, help to eliminate the food waste of others. A novel approach to dealing with food waste is that of Noosa Earth. Noosa Earth grows its oyster mushrooms on a substrate of barley straw and used coffee grounds that are provided by a number of local cafĂŠs specifically for Noosa Earth. But that is not where it ends. Once the oyster mushrooms are harvested, the semi-spent substrate finds itself the nutrient-dense home base for a variety of leafy greens, and then finishes the cycle as compost. Michael Baulch and Simon Jones are the passion behind Noosa Earth supplying restaurants with mushrooms that has ultimately landed them a State winner of the delicious Magazine Produce Awards as well as acclaim for their efforts in chemical free, sustainable urban farming. Restaurants can purchase the oyster mushrooms direct while locals can enjoy the third flush oyster mushrooms bags that provide some momentary joy with the appearance of a final flush of oyster mushrooms, and then on-

On the topic of coffee, Noosa hinterland does in fact have its own coffee plantation; Noosa Black Coffee, in the beautiful Kin Kin region. It is a family owned plantation, with 5,000 plus coffea arabica trees enjoying tropical Queensland bliss. A healthy harvest, grown without pesticides and naturally sun dried, has resulted in Noosa Blacks own range of specialist roasts. Processing the coffee beans is a laborious and time-consuming process, and Noosa Black only uses its own home grown beans, so stocks are limited. Occasionally they open their farm to the public, so look out for that, but in the meantime, enjoy a 100% grown and roasted Sunshine Coast brew that will help you navigate your way comfortably through Noosa’s winter. Any time of the year‌ You'll find deliciously healthy Papaya and Pawpaw available in your favourite fruit shop in Queensland.

lot of people think that they are one and the same - but they're not. Red papaya is sweeter with orange-red flesh and a yellow- orange skin, and the yellow papaw has a distinctive yellow flesh and pale orange skin.. The red papaya has a pear-shaped body and the yellow pawpaw has a rounder and larger body. The fragile fruit is soft when ready to eat (a bit like checking an avocado for ripeness), and flesh is soft with a distinctive smell that a sprinkle of fresh lime or lemon juice will help reduce. It is perfect to add to breakfast fruit smoothies and fruit salad, as they are extremely good for you and full of vitamins. And, their versatility means that they are just at home in your savoury dishes as your sweeter ones. Why not try this dish next weekend:

ENJOY THE FRUITS OF THEIR LABOUR

Henschke Hill of Grace 2012 A VINTAGE GRACED BY JOY… If you weren't lucky enough to be at the Henschke cellar door, in the Barossa's Eden Valley, for the first tastings of the new release Hill of Grace, then be sure to make a quick trip to your favourite bottle shop. A wine presenting with a deep crimson colour with hints of violet. Captivating blackberry and mulberry aromatics, complemented by exotic five spice, star anise, black peppercorns, and notes of herbaceousness with thyme and dried basil. The palate offers incredible length and purity, with a central base of blackberry and plumy fruit, enveloped in layers of silky tannins. Perfection in a bottle. RRP $825.00 With James Halliday awarding the vintage 99 points you can be sure that stocks won't last long I'm sure.

Shaw + Smith always a sure winner on any occasion… Shaw + Smith Pinot Noir Adelaide Hills A wine that is delicate, fragrant, light to medium bodied with deceptive power, firm tannins, and medium term ageing potential. The wine is a lovely, light red in colour with a bright nose, offering a luscious fragrance of juicy cranberries, cinnamon and bergamot. On the palate there is lots of rhubarb and earl grey tea on top of a fine, savoury core of cured meats, stems, sap, and spice. Nice acid cut and grippy tannins follow through to the long finish. Of course, it is one of my favourite choices to accompany any duck dish, especially twice-cooked duck with red berries or figs this season..

68

NoosaStyleLiving

Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay Adelaide Hills The winemaker was definitely aiming for elegance, while showing restraint and the ability to age well. The acid brings a rich freshness and there’s a definite generosity of flavour. Typically this chardonnay shows white flowers, citrus, and nectarine notes. The 2015 vintage is true to the style, with a palate that is long and flavoursome, offering connoisseurs of quality chardonnays a mid-palate texture and bright acid finish. A note of brioche adds to the wine's complexity. Perfect to savour with just about any dish on the menu of your favourite restaurant.

Loving a glass of good red wine this Winter… I've been eagerly tasting my way through some amazing Aussie red wines, looking for the perfect bottle to accompany my winter roasts, beef bourguignon and slow roasted lamb or glazed pork belly.

The Margarita Guide cocktails for every occasion By: Steve Quirk Published by: New Holland RRP $24.99 The Margarita Guide features a wide range of cocktails with 50 delicious drinks, that will add a twist to any home or party. There isn't anything difficult about making a Margarita - but with this handy guide, you'll take them to a new level of deliciousness! Fabulous photographs and tantalising recipes to make your next party a definite hit.

Mandarin Margarita 45ml gold Tequila 20ml Mandarine Napoleon 15ml Cointreau 30ml fresh lemon juice slice of fresh orange Prepare a margarita glass with a salt-frosted rim. Pour tequila, Mandarine Napoleon, Cointreau and juice into a blender over cracked ice - then blend. Strain into prepared glass and garnish with a slice of orange, then serve with a short straw.

These two rich South Australian reds are perfect for complementing your favourite cold weather comfort food. 2014 Taylors Shiraz The wine has complex and enticing bouquet of dark berry fruit along with juicy black plum, spice, cedar and hints of liquorice, chocolate and roasted coffee. Wine Palate On the palate, the wine is rich and complex with layers of flavour. Dark berry fruits combine with lashings of coffee, chocolate and spice from high quality oak. The fruit and oak weight create a multidimensional palate which is defined with well-balanced, elegant tannins. This is a very generous wine with textural complexity and long, persistent flavours.

2014 Taylors Cabernet Sauvignon The wine has an enticing, lifted aroma of ripe blackcurrants, choc mint, subtle spice and a hint of dried tomato leaf. The overall nose character is one of richness and elegance. Wine Palate On the palate it is a very well-balanced wine with ripe blackcurrant characters, along with chocolate and mint intermingling harmoniously with oak characters of cedar and subtle tobacco. There is an understated power to the wine, with layers of complexity building across the palate and then finishing elegantly with long, fine tannins. It is a generous wine yet retains poise and the elegance of great Cabernet Sauvignon.

YAYOI KUSAMA… A career-spanning survey of work by leading contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama (Japan b.1929) opens at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in November. "Now in her late 80s, Yayoi Kusama is one of the most recognisable artists working today. We are thrilled to be partnering with National Gallery Singapore on this vibrant survey of her incredibly productive career,’ Mr Saines QAGOMA Director said. ‘Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow’ explores key motifs in Kusama’s work since the early 1950s, her engagement with the body, and her expansive conception of space. ‘It includes more than 70 works including early painterly experiments, a multi-decade presentation of the celebrated ‘net’ paintings, soft-sculpture and assemblage, performance documents, iconic ‘infinity rooms’ and largescale installations from later in her career. ‘The exhibition culminates in an immersive presentation of Kusama’s most recent paintings from the visually arresting ‘My Eternal Soul’ series (2009 – ongoing),’ ‘When Kusama began her epic painting series ‘My Eternal Soul’ in

2009, she initially intended it to comprise 100 canvases. Still ongoing, the series of works in a riot of bright colours now includes more than 500 paintings, 24 of the very newest of which are featured in the exhibition,” he said. Paris in the

Good memories can last a long while, as can bad ones. My memories of Paris in the 1980s were mainly good, especially of two particular days.

H

aving miraculously managed to stockpile some money, I took a tip from my old friend Kurt Barry from Barry’s Gallery at Surfers Paradise. Kurt had purchased serious European art in Paris some years earlier. It was a sunny day in Montparnasse when I knocked on the door of one Gil Romero, Kurt’s old contact. When the door opened ajar, the well worn face of an octogenarian looked at my then 6 feet five Anglo form up and down, and said, ‘’ I ‘hope you are not from zee Sotheby’s or zee Christie’s , I ( h ) ate zee Sotheby’s and zee Christies. Inside the apartment Gil explained dealing in Paris had forever centered around the multiple sales held daily by the auctioneers at the Hotel Drouot, until the big internationals arrived in Paris. In the early days the mixed sales at the Drouot were full of good European lots, plus works by the many from overseas who had studied in Paris between 1850 and1950 . Sales at which allcomers with knowledge could secure a bargain. After the internationals offices opened, top end stock diminished greatly. In various guises, Gil, first as an employee at the Durand Ruel Gallery in the 1920s, then as a freelance dealer had operated in Paris for 60 years . Durand Ruel handled all of the major impressionists and many post impressionists,

later he dealt much with Daniel- Henry Kahnweiler, supremo dealer of the early moderns. Gil explained the turmoil in Paris, firstly in the Great Depression, and how the sales at the Drouot were feeding half of Paris by clearing goods cheaply. Later from 1937 to 1939 like all wealthy Jews, the Jewish dealers fled to safe havens, Kahnweiler to Switzerland . The dealers sold their stock. Operators with serious cash, some from overseas such as Peggy Guggenheim, were securing major works for a few hundred dollars U.S. Gil whose budget was more modest purchased mainly drawings and lithos, many from Kahnweiler in folio. After the war he sold some back to assist Kahnweiler to re open.

PICASSO Black Wash Drawing

Gil held his works mainly in folio (unframed )condition in plan drawers , making it perfect for me to carry from France . Now almost 35 years on works purchased from him during his nearly 10 year retirement sale, are being sold by the descendants of those who bought from him back then. Recently a Man Ray ink drawing with his provenance sold through Swanns a major New York gallery. Illustrated on these pages, and available in the gallery are some of the drawings procured by me on those two balmy days in Paris in the eighties.

Save the dates! Friday August 18 – Sunday August 20

This August, more than 40 visual and creative artists in over 40 studios - from the beaches of Noosa to its lakes and hinterland, will be offering visitors the opportunity to talk to and experience their creative world.

T

his is the second year of the extremely popular, Noosa Open Studios (NOS) project, that gives visitors the chance to discover regional artists at work in their own spaces, and to discuss their creative processes and ideals - personally. You'll see works in progress, finished works and breathe the essence of the artists at work. Noosa is home to a plethora of artists, artisans, sculptors, ceramic artists, textile weavers, jewellers, photographers, woodworkers, printmakers and multi-media specialists - who don't always have the opportunity to engage with the people who love their works, which quite often are purchased through other galleries. So this is a perfect way for both sides of the art world - artists and art lovers to come together. Be sure to visit The Hub of NOS, at Wallace House , 1 Wallace Drive in Noosaville, before heading out on your day of discovery. There will be a 'pop-up cafĂŠ' onsite, as well as a display of works from the participating artists and video display to whet your appetite pre-departure. There is no need to self-drive, as buses will be departing at regular time on set routes - with pick up and drop off points in Hastings Street and Gympie Terrace. To ensure your seat we suggest you pre-book your tickets for tours. Of course, if you are driving - why not make a special day of it and pack a picnic to enjoy the full experience - art, culture and the Joie de Vivre of life along the way.

Take a road trip to see artists in their studios - Meet over 40 emerging and established artists and artisans - Painters, ceramicists, mixed media artists and more - See their private studios and learn about their creative processes - Invest in original art or just be inspired by it! - See an exhibition of participating artists at Wallace House, Noosaville

Some of the participating artists include:

In recent years, she has also developed a passion for glass slumping and fusing, creating beautiful platters, jewellery, homewares and 3D work from coloured glass. This is a complex process, involving extensive experimentation with various glasses, firing temperatures and techniques to create the final pieces. Annie also runs workshops to share her love for glass work and the use of her studio with interested students. THE STUDIO Annie's studio is based next to her home in beautiful Black Mountain. Tucked away out of the elements, she has a large workshop with working space and storage for her many glass supplies. They cling to life despite the droughts, pestilence, floods, winds and heat and have provided the needs for animals, birds and the people for thousands of years. They certainly provide inspiration for so many painterly stories.’ www.trevorpurvis.me

“The good life, full of pleasure and indulgence.”

HELEN PEEL THE ARTIST Rich portraits and life scenes reveal a powerful colouring technique and an eye for detail from this contemporary Australian artist.

F

rom an early age, Helen Peel had an unstoppable need to pick up a pencil or a paintbrush and express how she sees the world – a world rich with colour and radiant light. Throughout her careers, first as a hairdresser and then interior designer, Helen was drawn to colour. Work commitments kept her from using her artistic talent as little more than a hobby, dabbling in different techniques and subjects including sculpture, life drawing, pottery and oil painting.

On retiring to Noosa, Helen travelled extensively and found the time for her passion to paint. Starting with pencil sketches in the streets of Florence, she discovered her strength in portraiture and village scenes - drawn from the people and places she saw throughout Europe, with each painting inviting one into the life of its subject. Working exclusively with oils, Helen is an accomplished realist, bringing stories to life with light, shade and movement, in exquisitely delicate brushwork and luminous, vibrant colours. On each canvas she lays the foundation of a pencil drawing, likening her technique to building a house – layering for perspective depth – that leads to works of detailed architecture, vivid florals and luxurious fabrics, all conjured with a variety of brushes, palette knife or rags. Helen’s love of portraiture reveals a talent for expressing a light in the eyes, and a life in the lines, as each canvas conveys the true character of her subject. But it is her use of the complicated and dramatic “ruboff “ technique that shows her intimate knowledge of light and detail at its best. Already in private collections throughout Australia and overseas, Helen Peel staged her first solo exhibition in 2010. Her latest exhibition will be held at the Julia Carter Gallery in Gateway Drive, Noosaville on 27th - 28th October, 2017.

Get in on the Act at Noosa Arts Theatre Noosa Arts Theatre - What's On Storytelling is at the heart of what we do.

ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL

JACK OF HEARTS

Since 1978, Noosa Arts Theatre has been running the National One-Act Playwriting Competition. With The Nimmo Prize for Best Play ($5,000), it attracts entries from playwrights throughout Australia, and many other countries. Scripts are judged anonymously by a professional panel of three industry experts. The three finalists are selected on the quality of the writing, not on subject matter; and the winning order is decided before the plays are presented in this Festival. During the Festival, the audience is asked at each performance to vote for the ‘Nancy Cato Audience Choice Award’. Presentation of awards takes place after the final performance. Noosa Arts Theatre is proud to offer this rather unique opportunity to aspiring and established playwrights and showcase the finalists as part of the Noosa Long Weekend Festival.

acchus Restaurant’s decor is full of rich chestnut hues, mahogany and cool marble that perfectly harmonise with the gilding and Asian treasures around the walls, and fresh flowers that adorn the tables and cocoon the room. The seating is comfortable and luxurious, and the soft candlelit ambience creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for diners. Bacchus boasts a spacious and comfortable bar stocked with premium spirits, and a wine list offering over 200 exceptional wines curated by Head Sommelier Andrew Giblin. On the all important food front, Head Chef Massimo Speroni brings an expertise garnered from years of working in multi Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy. He recently delivered a new menu featuring a Raw and Cured component, offering a fresh approach to the restaurant's flavour profile. While the intrinsic nature of the Bacchus menu remains focused on inspired modern Australian flavours. I love his celebration of all things, fresh, clean, and local - and interpretation of light classical dishes with a twist, now presented on all-new Pordamsa textural and sculpted, white ceramics imported from the north of Spain, that perfectly mirror the art on a plate philosophy. The highly imaginative menu offers diners a selection of Degustation options, designed to offer a number of dishes in smaller proportions, with or without perfectly matched wines to showcase the kitchen teams talents. The a la carte menu offers inspired classics that never fail to delight. My favourites from the new Raw and Cured menu were the freshly shucked Coffin Bay oysters with lemon; and the A grade Tuna carpaccio & tartare presented with sesame oil and petit herbs. I then chose an entrée of Textures of Beetroot, goats curd, crispy amaranth & Xeres vinegar - a masterpiece. To add a sweet finish to our evening I chose the Peach with lemon & basil syrup, strawberry parfait, lemon cake and peach jelly. What a perfect ending to a perfect evening. We started our evening in the newly renovated Verandah Bar, with delicate canapés and soft pink Rosé. The bar now boasts a dedicated Whisky Bar for devotees of the golden spirit, and we were then led on a passage of discovery with guest Whisky ambassador of Beam Suntory Australia, Matt Barnett. Matt was so keen to deliver a 'real' experience that he even hand-cut huge ice cubes to sit in our crystal glasses of 12 and 17 year-old Hibiki Suntory Whiskey. There was no need for a fire crackling in the fireplace, as we were all looking rather rosy by now.

We then carefully meandered down to a candlelit dinner on the Lagoon Beach, to savour a progression of exceptional offerings from Matt and his kitchen team at the intrinsically rustic The Fireplace, where diners enjoy the theatre of dining with chefs working in front of the huge wood-fire ovens. Additions from the Resort's own native kitchen gardens were a crowning glory on the dishes, the practice stems from a philosophy founded on sustainability, to help connect diners with local produce; with the menu evolving to celebrate the bounty of each season. Although this was a private occasion, the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort is famous for its spectacular Weddings and Corporate Events. They are constantly improving and refurbishing the Resort's assets to keep ahead of the market and ensure that every occasion, from a small intimate dinner for two, to a high-end corporate event or stunning wedding is perfect. And, luckily we were staying the night in one of the Resort's wellappointed rooms, because we definitely couldn't have driven home. What a night…what a Resort! **(and if you didn't notice, yes there were 3 Matts - a bit confusing but lots of fun!).

T rainer Peter has also given many local models the chance to be published, in the highly competitive world of modelling getting work is no easy feat “if I have done a models portfolio I can see how she/he works in front of the camera, how they take direction, if they are good I recommend these models to my commercial clients as I like to give people a chance to get a foot in the door; there is so much talent around and many never get the opportunity so where I can I like to help”. Fifteen years ago Peter met his partner Elizabeth Kramar; Liz is a qualified hairdresser and grand make-up artist who is considered to be amongst the top 10 in the country in her field; 2013 2014 2015 saw Liz named as finalist in the Australian makeup artist of the year awards. “I owe some of my success to her with her ability to create flawless make up. Together we started up a photography studio with a hairdressing salon and a make-up bar which combined our skills.” The studio based in Noosa QLD is Icon studios. “QLD is my main base however we regularly travel to Sydney, Melbourne and internationally for commercial and editorial projects.” Peter has moved from strength to strength; his magazine clientele and commercial clientele continue to grow- and he is grateful and fortunate to say “I have met some wonderful people doing what I love to do best!” www.iconstudios.com.au
