Family music festival returns with its best line up yet

Family music festival 'Milnrow Calling' returns for a third year on Saturday 2nd September 2023.

The line-up of artists for the event, held at Milnrow Cricket Club, will consist of up-and-coming artists, top tribute acts, local bands and community groups.

Acts already announced include Ellie Sax, Eltonesque, Manchester Ska Foundation, Shenanigans and Funktion and Co.

Food and drink vendors include Benjamin’s Italian Pizza, Bombay Brew Kebabs, Hoof Flipped the Toastie, Mamma Chilli's, Yankeeshire Diner, Penguin Cakes and Tony’s Ice Cream.

Children's entertainment will include a comedy magic show from Britain's Got Talent’s Steve Royle, Greatest Showman duo, bouncy castles, face painting and festival glitter.

Festival organiser Ben Wright described the project saying:

"This is set to be the best Milnrow Calling yet! I’m over moon with the lineup we have put together.

"Nothing brings people together like brilliant live music, great food and drink in the summer. The demand for tickets has been incredible since we went on sale so we know there will be a good crowd there to enjoy a great event."

Organisers are keen to hear from local bands interested in performing at the event. In the build up to the event they will be hosting a 'Battle of the Bands' competition with a slot at the festival up for grabs to the winning artist. Artists can apply via the website: www.milnrowcalling.co.uk

JIMMY MCNULTY

Rochdale Football Club have announced their new Head Coach Jimmy McNulty, on a two-year contract.

McNulty had two interim spells in charge of the team during the 2022/23 season, including their final eight games of the campaign, which yielded a return of three wins and three draws.

The 38-year-old, who has represented the club for eight seasons as a player, joined Dale in the summer of 2015, following spells at clubs such as Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Brighton & Hove Albion, Barnsley and Bury.

He has made 237 playing appearances for the club, more recently transitioning into a player/coach role.

Style caught up with Jimmy to discuss his plans to kickstart the season ahead...

Style: After two spells as interim manager, how does it feel to have been given the Head Coach role permanently?

I feel incredibly lucky. It’s an amazing feeling. It probably won’t quite sink in until it’s all over – because I’m so busy in the midst of it all. Hopefully it’s not all over for a long, long time in the future! It feels surreal but I do feel very fortunate. It’s the fulfilment of an ambition that I’ve had for a long time.

You've had a long playing career - how do you feel that will benefit in your first Head Coach position?

It will be invaluable because I’ve felt what it’s like to be out there first hand. I’ve felt the pressures, felt the fears. I’ve got to know what playing against certain opponents feels like. A lot of people who haven’t played get a feeling about certain players being selected or not selected. But there’s also a real feel that you get out there from playing against certain people and against a certain type of opponent. The mental imprint that a player can have playing against a certain player, I’ve had that experience for a long time. They would be the key factors to take from my playing days into my management days.

What's the benefit of being named Head Coach instead of Manager?

Hopefully a Head Coach is spinning much less plates than a manager is spinning! There will be less fires to put out I would think.

One of your previous clubs, Bury FC is coming back this season, it must be nice to see them return since they were expelled from the football league?

It’s brilliant. I’m really happy for the fans over there and the people that gave their life to the club. Certain key stakeholders come into the club, make key decisions and then disappear having ruined everything at the club that those people care about. People are the most important thing in football clubs. Good people got hurt and lost a big part of their lives when they lost that club. So, I’m genuinely happy and it’s a great thing that they’re back.

What are your fondest memories of Rochdale AFC?

The one that sticks out to me is probably surviving relegation on the final day of 2017/18, when Joe Thompson scored the goal to keep us up against Charlton Athletic. The FA Cup runs as well were great moments, especially the Tottenham Hotspur games. There are other good memories too, such as challenging up at the top of League One, upsetting some of the big teams. There is a collection of moments and memories.

With the unfortunate relegation last season what are your aims and ambitions for the coming season?

My aims and ambitions are to provide the club with the stability that we’ve not had for a few years, first and foremost. We have to improve bit by bit, day by day, and see where that can take us. I’ve got private ambitions beyond that, but they are my upfront ambitions that I’m willing to share right now.

Rochdale's academy have had a known pipeline of talented players coming through, such as Ethan Brierley and Luke Matheson - are you hoping to continue this?

We’re hoping to restart it this season. We’re right at the end of the production line with that, because we’ve lost the connection between the first team and the academy. We need to reconnect that and restart it. There might be a shortage for the coming season or two on that, but hopefully we will start to see the fruits of our labour once we reconnect those parts of the club.

Which managers or coaches have had a biggest influence on your coaching and managerial career so far?

A few for different reasons. Jim Gannon for how he was tactically...

Gus Poyet for how he was ruthless and all about winning. He did everything possible to win a game – and I mean everything. That opened my eyes and I thought a lot of him. Nigel Adkins for how he managed people. Everybody wanted to play for him. And Keith Hill had an influence on me having worked with him for many years. He had the ability to reignite certain people’s careers that they thought were lost.

The National League is notoriously a difficult league to get out of. What is going to be the difference to get Rochdale back to the Football League?

We have to find our identity again and stick to it. We have to become something again. We’ve not known what we are for a few years, so we have to find our identity and be brave enough to stick to it. We have to do that for a sustained period and we will begin to find the levels that we once had.

Outside of football, What do you do to get away from football and relax?

I don’t!!

Who would be in your dream 5-a-side team?

Gianluigi Buffon, Paolo Maldini, John Stones, Ronaldo (Brazilian), Lionel Messi.

Do you have a message for the fans?

We appreciate your support. We can’t achieve anything with you, so your direct input genuinely affects the output of your club. I hope you can support us as much as possible in this new, exciting chapter for our club.

LOOSE, FAILING OR MISSING TEETH? DON'T LIKE DENTURES?

DR ANDREW PARASHCHAK PROVIDES A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO DENTAL IMPLANTS...

WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

A dental implant is the most tooth like replacement for a missing tooth. They can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. The titanium implant is a bit like a screw and is surgically placed in the jawbone, replacing the tooth root, and is attached to a dental crown, bridge or denture depending on your individual needs.

WHO CAN HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible for dental implant treatment to restore their smile, provided they are in good general and dental health and have adequate remaining jawbone. Even where bone loss has occurred we have procedures which can help rebuild it. There is no upper age limit for dental implant treatment. In-fact, in patients struggling to eat and speak with loose conventional dentures, implant solutions are life changing.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL PROCESS FOR IMPLANT TREATMENT?

Initially a consultation visit is made where you can discuss your needs and perform a detailed examination of your mouth. We would also take any X rays or other records at this stage. Following a 3D Xray (CBCT scan) taken in house, we would proceed to the surgery.

After a healing period of approximately 3 months, your implant(s) will be restored with a crown, bridge or denture. Treatment is usually completed in around 4 and 12 months depending on complexity.

HOW LONG WILL AN IMPLANT LAST?

You can expect your dental implant solution to survive up to 25 years depending on maintenance of excellent oral hygiene regime, good general health and regular review with your dentist and hygienist. Implants, like teeth need to be maintained, as they can be susceptible to gum disease.

EXCITING LINE UP FOR NEW FEEL GOOD FAMILY PICNICS

The line-up has been revealed for the new Feel Good Family Picnics being held in Rochdale, Heywood, Littleborough and Middleton, from 25th July to 28th July.

Visitors to the free family events will be able to experience over 20 amazing different attractions during each day, including live performances, music, theatre, sports and shows for children of all ages.

Spectacular outdoor performances include ‘Do what your mamma told ya’ by Just More Productions, billed as a vibrant comedy circus show with a feast of food fusion and storytelling across geography and generations. Circus artists Blaze and Fatina star in the plate spinning, food juggling, fire blazing show, bringing the family kitchen and its recipes to life culminating in a hula hooping finale.

Theatre Temoin will perform ‘FLOOD’ their interactive outdoor spectacle highlighting the health of the world’s ocean. Utilising circus, music and acrobatics it features an epic adventure to understand how our coastline and communities have become ‘seasick’.

Standing under your own personalised sound umbrella, ‘FLOOD’ is designed to take you ‘beyond your front door and into the eye of the storm’.

Live music will be provided by festival favourites including Flat Cap Brass, who play fun and friendly brass as you’ve never heard it before. The Ski Band will play a selection of tasty ska, calypso, reggae and rock ‘n’ roll tunes and there will also be an appearance by Northern Dholis; who play traditional Indian drums called dhols to blend folk sounds with modern pop hits.

Master storyteller Gav Cross presents his hilarious ‘Twisted Tales for Terrible Children’ show – revealing the terrible, silly and the downright incredible ’truths’ behind famous classic tales.

At 1.45pm each day it will be time for a real Feel Good picnic, with visitors encouraged to bring their own supplies and tuck in while a stunning carnival procession travels around the parks led by international carnival arts company Global Grooves featuring giant puppets, costumes, funky drumbeats, flags and high energy dance.

Visitors can also try a range of popular sports and games including boccia, rounders, tennis, dance and football with staff from Your Trust. Look out for workshops and taster sessions where you can take part, covering a range of fun activities including circus skills, yoga, and martial arts.

Organisers want the event to reduce its impact on the environment as well as showing visitors ways to reduce your carbon footprint and be kinder to our planet so there will be lots of sustainable activities including upcycling, health and wellbeing, nature based craft activities and water saving tips. You’re encouraged to take your picnic waste home, and bring a water bottle as free refills will be available all day.

PICNIC IN THE PARK

HAREHILL PARK, LITTLEBOROUGH (OL15 9BG)

• There are places to park on Inglis Street, Sale Street and Town House Road, but please be mindful of residents

Our favourite park, whatever the weather, is Harehill Park… but it’s even better in the summer when you can sit and enjoy a picnic (as well as the view).

It is such a pretty park, with lots of things to explore, including an old waterwheel and the grave of a monkey! You will find paths suitable for bikes and scooters and also spaces suitable for ball games or frisbees.

There are two playgrounds, one aimed at younger children, including a cute fake road, and one for older children, complete with a skate park.

To make your picnic even more fun, there will be brass bands playing on 6th August and 3rd September!

The Feel Good Family Picnic arrives in Harehill Park on Thursday 27th July 11am to 4pm. Visitors to the free family events will be able to experience over 20 amazing different attractions, including live performances, music, theatre, sports and shows for children of all ages.

QUEENS PARK, HEYWOOD (OL10 4AL)

• There is a car park opposite the entrance on Queens Park Road

Another fabulous park is Queens Park in Heywood. The kids especially like the castle themed playground and the BMX track, but there is also a large lake to see, complete with lots of different birds, often a land train to ride and a large stage to perform on (if you so wish…)

The Feel Good Family picnic arrives in Queens Park on Friday 28 July 11am to 4pm.

DENEHURST PARK, SPOTLAND (OL11 5AF)

• There is a small car park next to Denehurst Stores on Edenfield Road

Again, only a small park, but a good one! It has a little playground, including a separate toddler area, and also a perimeter park to walk road or bike road… but beware of the trolls hiding under the bridge!

On Sunday 20th August the Denehurst Park Dog Show will make a return so why not enter your dog to show off its best tricks!

PADDLE & EXPLORE

EALEES

• The nearest car park is the pay and display at OL15 0AQ

• In the car park you will find the new Woodlands Café and also a small playground

Whilst everyone knows about Hollingworth Lake, not everyone realises that if you head slightly off the beaten track you will find a much quieter, but equally as beautiful, place… Ealees.

Follow the lane to the bottom of the car park, and carry on then turn left onto the path. Here you will find a dipping pond to investigate, a charming woodland area to explore and some picnic benches to relax on. If you carry on along the path, and cross the “troll bridge”, you will then find a cute little stream to dip your feet in, or simply throw stones, and lots of green space to play.

The path follows Hollingworth Brook and Ealees Brook all the way into Littleborough, which is about a mile, so it makes for a lovely little stroll through the countryside. It is even pram friendly, if not a little bumpy!

CHEESDEN VALLEY

• The nearest place to park would be the lay-by close to Owd Betts pub (OL12 7TY)

If you head away from Owd Betts, towards Edenfield, you will see a small opening in the wall on your left. If you climb over the stile and then follow the path down into the valley, you will stumble across the ruins of an old mill. The waterfall next to the mill falls into Cheesden Brook, and this can be explored and splashed in. A delightful hidden gem!

IRON WATERS

• You could park at the top of Dewhirst Road in Syke (OL12 0AG), but be mindful of residents, or park on Rydings Road (OL12 9PS) and follow the marked footpath across the fields

Hidden away to the north of Rochdale, the tiny Fanny Brook offers paddling opportunities for even the smallest of adventurers. There are also small hills to venture up (and roll down) and trees to climb (or even swing from if you are lucky). For bigger explorers, you can walk up to the Healey Stone Circle from here or check out Hamer Pasture and Brown House Wham reservoirs.

MAKING A WILL OR LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY IN 5 EASY STEPS

Fiona Daly, launched her client-focused, Rochdalebased company in February 2021. Since then, Wills & Wishes Legal has grown and thrived, helping individuals and families throughout the borough and beyond to have peace of mind for the future.

Making a Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney is something many of us put off for one reason or another, but it's vital to ensure your loved ones and assets are protected. Fiona offers a complete service from start to finish, making the process straightforward and completed in a matter of weeks.

Over the past two years, Wills & Wishes has gained over 75 five star Google reviews which are testament to the fantastic service Fiona provides.

Here, Fiona simplifies the process of making a Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney into 5 easy steps...

1. Initial chat - We’ll have an initial chat on the phone so I can find out more about you and what documents you’re wanting me to prepare for you. I’ll give you an idea of the cost of my services so you have my costs upfront.

2. Home visit - I come to you. My clients love this part of the service because they don’t have to find my office or pay for parking. The appointment dates and times are flexible to suit you. I have daytime, evening and weekend appointments.

When I come to see you, we have a chat about what you want to put in your documents and I’ll advise you about your options.

I have 20 years experience of working as a solicitor, I’m a member of the Society of Will writers, hold the 'safe to do business with' accreditation and I specialise in writing Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney so you’re in safe hands!

3. I prepare your documents - I go back to my desk and prepare your documents in simple language and within a matter of weeks. There’s no legal jargon.

4. ConfirmationYou confirm that you’re happy with your draft documents and we arrange a day and time for signing them.

5. Second visit - I come back to your house and sign your documents with you. I don't charge extra for witnessing the documents as this is all included in the original cost. I arrange safe storage of your Will and Lasting Powers of Attorney for you so you know that they are kept safe for when they are needed. I also arrange for your Will to be added to the National Will register so there’s no chance that an earlier Will will be used when it is needed.

And that's it! Peace of mind in 5 simple steps.

GOOGLE 5 STAR CLIENT REVIEWS...

"Fiona was extremely professional, responsive and guided us through the process from start to finish. This was very helpful given that we've never had Wills written in the past. Fiona was able to schedule our appointments around our working hours and even came to our house to do this. I strongly recommend Fiona for anyone who is looking at having a Will made."- Callum

"Fiona provided a thoroughly professional service, drawing up new Wills and Powers of Attorney for both of my parents. She was friendly, approachable and patiently took the time to explain everything clearly to us. Highly recommended." - Lindsay

VISIT

April this year saw Castleton based children’s charity Jolly Josh, celebrate a year since opening its doors to welcome children and families living with complex medical needs and physical disabilities.

"This year has flown by", said Centre Manager, Sarah Ford. "It only seems like yesterday that the Mayor of Rochdale, Cllr Aasim Rashid, cut the ribbon to officially open Jolly Josh, and we were able to welcome families into the Centre’s safe, inclusive and accessible space."

Over the last 12 months the team at The Jolly Josh Centre has introduced eighty families to a variety of play and social sessions for 0–19-year-olds, including Early Years, Sing and Sign, Sensory Touch and Music, and a range of warm waterbased sessions in the Centre’s Hydrotherapy Pool.

"It’s heart-warming to know that by opening the Jolly Josh Centre, children, young people and their families now have a special place to connect with and support each other, giving them so many more opportunities to live their best lives and thrive, and hearing our families feedback is reward in itself", enthused Sarah.

Circus and Carnival Fun

Hydrotherapy Lead, Natalie, and Session Facilitators, Anna and Rachel, are continually exploring how they can expand children’s horizons and recently celebrated two big social successes.

At the beginning of June, Jolly Josh families enjoyed the tumblers, trapeze artists, roller-skating acrobatics, singing and dancing when they visited to the Circus Starr Big Top at Daisy Nook Country Park.

Fresh from their circus experience, two weeks later Jolly Josh families had another opportunity for a fun day out, this time with a fundraising twist.

Community Fundraiser, Lillie Winterbottom said:

"The charity was honoured to have been chosen as the Charity of the Year by the Committee of The Milnrow and Newhey Community Carnival, and we wanted our carnival float to stand out! By enlisting the help of Jolly Josh supporters including Manchester based architects, PRP, transport specialist Graham Poole Road Transport, and building contractor H Bell & Sons, together we were able to create an amazing ‘Sunken Treasure’ themed, wheelchair accessible float."

"The carnival parade was a wonderful experience for us all and was a great opportunity to tell everyone that Jolly Josh is here for our community, and importantly, that we will do all we can to make the seemingly inaccessible, accessible for our families", added Lillie.

"Being part of the Jolly Josh float in the carnival parade was epic! We had bubble guns, music and all sorts of inflatable sea creatures hanging from the roof, and even a shipwreck with treasure chests", said Dawn who accompanied her daughter Francesca and P.A. Kat on the float. “Dawn added, "It was truly an amazing day."

Jolly Josh has again been honoured by the communities of Milnrow and Newhey, having been chosen as the Carnival’s Charity of the Year for 2024 – save the date for next year’s extravaganza on 15th June!

Look out for Team Jolly Josh at October’s Williams BMW Half Marathon, 10k and Fun Run and if you would like to join the team of runners contact Community Fundraiser, Lillie Winterbottom lillie@jollyjosh.co.uk

What's On in the Arts

As always, there is plenty of arts and culture to look forward to in and around Rochdale in the coming months. Here's just a taster...

ART

As we continue to celebrate our flourishing local artist scene the spotlight falls Ebor Studio, Littleborough.

Artist and director, Kara Lyons, was the guest speaker at the latest FRAG [Friends of Rochdale Art Gallery] meeting, giving a fascinating illustrated talk on the evolution of Ebor Studio in Littleborough. A story of creative vision, courage, and sheer hard graft.

Beginning as a 4-storey Victorian cotton mill, the Ebor Mill was semi derelict about 15 years ago when Kara and her husband decided to ‘repurpose’ it.

It has evolved to accommodate a community of 17 professional painters, sculptors, sound artists, dress designers, furniture makers, video artists, ceramicists, glass makers, performers, and photographers; and houses Gallery FRANK. It now contributes to the cultural life of the local community and beyond with contemporary exhibitions and events, including workshops and classesvisit: www.eborstudio.co.uk

As FRAG’S Dr Joe Dawson commented: "A thrilling local powerhouse and with a recent £30K Arts Council Grant for support, let’s hope that it continues to flourish".

FRAG’S next meeting, Thursday 13th July will be a follow-up visit to the Ebor Studio Littleborough from 13:00.

Touchstones Art Gallery

Prior to the 12th August closure for refurbishment [for about 18 months] we have two excellent exhibitions to enjoy.

Helene Appel: Among Trees, Among Sand Grains until 12 August in Gallery 3 & 4.

Helene Appel creates images that straddle the threshold between realism, sculpture, and abstraction. Using paints and different techniques allows the close emulation of each individual subject she paints.

Depicting ordinary objects from everyday life, her work sees the inherent aesthetic qualities of trees, seashores, fishing nets, headlights, and loose folds of fabric. Whilst never avoiding the less pleasant details of domestic life, we may also encounter discarded vegetable peelings ready to be thrown onto the compost pile or a kitchen sink full to the brim of murky washing up water.

This exhibition will feature key works from Appel’s career alongside a new series of paintings inspired by the streets of Rochdale.

Shezad Dawood: Leviathan: From the Forest to the Sea on until 12 August in Gallery 1 & 2

The latest episode in Shezad Dawood’s epic film series, Leviathan Cycle, which considers some of the urgent issues of our time such as climate change. Episode 8 was developed remotely in collaboration with Guarani scriptwriters, directors, and activists.

Set in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest – one of the most ecologically diverse and threatened biomes on earth –Episode 8 blends indigenous cosmology with fictional narrative, shot footage and animation, to chart a spiritual and ecological journey along the age-old Guarani path that links the forest to the sea.

Toad Lane Concerts

The Toad Lane Concerts series (TLC) is Rochdale’s weekly 'music at lunchtime', every Wednesday at 12:30.

The non-profit voluntary setup is based at the Grade 1-listed St Mary in the Baum Church, Rochdale, OL16 1DZ. The name Toad Lane Concerts reflects the proximity of the original Rochdale Pioneers Co-op shop and museum.

TLC was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2020. It provides a platform for singers and instrumentalists of all ages. Distinguished pros also pop in from time to time – because of the friendly atmosphere and superb acoustics and there is an 'eclectic mix' in programmes.

For example, the month of June brought the Telemann Baroque Ensemble with oboe and bassoon soloists, string quartet and harpsichord; local soprano Louise Taylor soprano; solo piano recitalist Jonathan Ellis piano; and international artists Johanna Leung clarinet (Hong Kong & RNCM) and Ashley Lum piano (UCSI Malaysia & RNCM). Each month is a bumper month of variety and excellence.

The Friends of Tourcoing return from eagerly-awaited trip

Rochdale has been twinned with Tourcoing - a similar town in Northern France - since 1956. The Friends of Tourcoing is a longstanding twinning group and friendship association that exists between the two towns.

Having just returned from their first exchange visit to Tourcoing since the pandemic, Claire Bayman, Chair of the association, shares her fond memories of the trip...

"After four long years, our group finally made its return to our French twin town. We were met at the Tourcoing Town Hall for an official reception where we presented the French Chair with a beautiful marble stone, hand painted by an artist from Todmorden with the Rochdale logo. We also took with us local honey from Springfield Park Bees and they are keen to visit the beehives of Springfield Park when they come to visit us next spring.

"We had a full programme of events as always – which involved lots of food, drink and merriment. A competitive start with a boules competition, which we are current 2:1 down to the French (wait until next year's rematch). Our next was a trip to the Town of Gravelines, a fortified town on the North Sea coast just up from Dunkirk. We went on a flat-bottomed boat trip around the moat and walls with a historical guide.

"Next up was a fabulous three-course meal facing the sea and the beautiful white sands, where we took part in a seagull impression competition (who doesn’t). Of course, a Rochdalian won the day. You have heard of the Rochdale Cowboy – well now we also have Lisa, the Rochdale Seagull.

"We moved onto another boat trip – this time on dry land – the Jean Bart. This is a 17th century warship in restoration stages, a bit like our Tudor ship, the Marie Rose. It’s being painstakingly restored, and they think it will take another 30 years.

"More food, BBQ’s, and visits to canal side restaurants and all in the safe care of our amazing Tourcoing friends.

"Our friendship group started 65 years ago. We meet 7-8 times a year for meetings to organise the visits, to have socials together and ensure that the twinning stays alive. We have events like cheese and wine nights, basics of French lessons, boules and crown green bowling, as well as pub quizzes throughout the year.

"We are always looking to welcome to the group new members and you don't have to speak French! It’s a cross channel friendship group in a nutshell and new members are more than welcome at any meeting or event."

Celebrating one year of The Circle, Bacup

The Circle, Bacup, is a beautiful former church and listed building that has been transformed into a vibrant community hub, cafe and venue by owner and valley resident, Freddy Khattab.

Formerly St John The Evangelist Church, the iconic building, built in 1877 re-opened its doors last year as an exciting multi-use venue.

In May 2023, The Circle celebrated its 1st birthday with a packed day of food, drink and family entertainment.

The Circle, set in the heart of Bacup, is a place where the community can meet to relax and enjoy breakfast, brunch, handmade artisan pizza, lunch, superfood latte’s, speciality coffees, daily desserts or even watch a film! Their diverse menu caters for all dietary requirements. There's also a garden and outdoor seating area.

The venue is also a beautiful, inclusive, community event space that hosts a jam-packed calendar of events for all ages and genders, frequented by musicians, comedians, artists, dancers, bargain hunters, moviegoers and even sportspeople!

There's a cinema club, playgroup, dance classes, regular makers & artisan markets, themed musical nights, karaoke nights, vocalists and even an upcoming performance & magic show. Recent events have included everything from a ballet performance and a puppet show to a wrestling event! There really is something for everyone.

Owner, Freddy has brought together a team of like-minded people who live or work in the area in order to set up this unique organisation, with the venue creating a buzz of excitement in the town and proving increasingly popular with locals and visitors from across the UK.

Freddy was recently awarded third place in the 'Pride of the Valley' category at The Pride of Rossendale Awards. The Circle was also named as a finalist for 'Supportive Business of the Year 2023'.

The Circle is a licensed wedding venue, hosting beautiful non-religious ceremonies and wedding receptions within the stunning church setting and grounds. They can provide a bespoke and memorable day to suit your budget.

Earlier this year, The Circle offered couples the chance to win a wedding and the public voted for a wonderful and well deserving couple. They have collaborated with lots of small local businesses to make this exciting day possible.

The wedding will take place on Saturday 22nd July from 1:30pm and will be one with a difference as the happy couple will be joined by members of the public along with their invited guests so that the community can share in their special day... everyone is welcome!

Upcoming events, groups and the latest mouthwatering menus are regularly posted on The Circle's Facebook page @thecirclebacup.

MENTAL HEALTH: 5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER YOU!

In today's fast-paced and demanding world, taking care of our mental health is crucial. Prioritising self-care and adopting healthy habits can significantly improve our emotional and psychological state. Here are five practical tips to help you maintain good mental health and lead to a happier YOU!

1. Practice

Self-Care

Slow down. Set aside time each day for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Engage in hobbies, practice mindfulness or meditation, and prioritise adequate sleep. Taking care of your physical health, such as regular exercise and a balanced diet, also contributes to a positive mindset.

2. Limit Social Media Use

Take a look at your social media use - is it distracting you, causing you anxiety or even disrupting your sleep? Consider a social media break or at the very least, unfollow anyone who makes you feel bad about yourself, even if unintentionally. Instead, try following some of the following accounts which are guaranteed to put a smile on your face...

Good News Movement - daily feelgood news stories from around the world.

The Happy Newspaper - a real newspaper celebrating only positive news.

Last but not least, Rochdale Style - we share happy, uplifting news about our borough and its wonderful people!

3. Manage Stress

Identify stress triggers and develop effective coping mechanisms. Incorporate stress management techniques like deep breathing exercises, journaling, or engaging in creative outlets to alleviate tension. Prioritise time management, delegate tasks, and learn to say no when necessary.

4. Seek Support

Don't hesitate to seek professional support when needed. A licensed therapist or counsellor can provide guidance and offer coping strategies. There are also some fantastic support groups in the local area. If you'd prefer to share your thoughts with a stranger, confidential services such as the Samaritans are always at the end of the phone or email.

5. Practice Gratitude

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can have a transformative effect on mental health. Take time each day to reflect on things you are grateful for. Keeping a gratitude journal or expressing appreciation towards others helps shift focus to the positive aspects of life.

Remember, mental health is a journey, and everyone's experience is unique. Implementing these tips consistently and adapting them to suit your needs can make a huge difference in maintaining good mental wellbeing. Advice & support

WHEN RHYTHM CAME TO ROCHDALE

Bo Diddley will not be a familiar name to many Style readers but he is one of the few people who has had a musical rhythm named after themselves - and one that you will almost certainly recognise.

Think of songs such as Faith by George Michael, Mona by Craig McLachlan from Neighbours, Born To Hand Jive from the musical, Grease, and Not Fade Away by the Rolling Stones. They all have that same syncopated Bo Diddley rhythm.

It is known in the music business as "shave and a haircut, two bits". Try saying this phrase aloud and you will inevitably be feeling the Bo Diddley beat!

If you are still unclear, think of how tradespeople used to knock on your front door – five knocks, a slight gap and then two more! That, dear reader, is also the Bo Diddley beat.

Opinions differ widely about the origins of this extraordinary rhythm. It has been traced to sub-Saharan Africa, but also has links to drumming styles in West Africa and Cuba.

There are also links with the "ham-bone" folk tradition of street performers where they slapped and patted their chests, arms, legs and cheeks. This was used by Bobby McFerrin on his 1988 classic Don't Worry Be Happy.

Bo Diddley himself was an unlikely star. Born in Mississippi in 1928, Bo was signed to Chess Records in the mid1950s. His first hit was actually called Bo Diddley and this led to a string of hits, all having pretty much the same rhythm!

Bo developed a reputation as a dynamic live performer with his rectangular electric guitars, distorted sound and, unusually even these days, a female guitarist playing alongside him. This fellow guitarist was known simply as The Duchess, her real name was Norma-Jean Wolford. Bo and the Duchess made an unlikely but highly effective partnership.

Bo made his British debut in autumn 1963 as part of a tour headlined by The Everly Brothers and, much lower down the bill, a new English group called The Rolling Stones.

Bo was accompanied on the tour by The Duchess whose skin-tight gold lame catsuit fascinated both the press and the audiences!

During the tour no less than three of Bo's albums entered the British charts. His influence went further; many British pop groups such as the Kinks, Manfred Mann, the Moody Blues and the Yardbirds were covering Bo Diddley songs in their live sets and recordings.

Early the following year, the Rolling Stones reached Number 3 in the singles charts with their version of Not Fade Away, performed, of course, to the famous Bo Diddley beat! Just think of the first line: "I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be..". The rhythm is both inescapable and unmistakeable.

Bo Diddley returned to the UK in autumn 1965 and had The Duchess with him again, starting in the Lancashire town of Nelson on September 25th.

Bo reached Rochdale's Cubiklub on Thursday 7th October, having played Bristol the previous night and headed for London the next day.

Style readers need to remind themselves that in 1965 there was only a small fraction of today's motorway network in Britain. Pop musicians toured the country in vans with no luxuries, often sitting alongside or on top of amplifiers and guitar cases. Bo Diddley travelled separately in a car, but this was apparently not a very reliable vehicle. At a show in Portsmouth, 2000 people had their entrance money refunded as the artist's car had broken down on the way!

Happily, Bo Diddley returned to the UK in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. In 1982 and 1984 his British tours were successful and Bo attracted hip young Londoners to venues such as Dingwalls and the Lyceum.

There are quite a lot of Bo Diddley's performances on YouTube. Check him out on 1964's T.A.M.I. Show performing - what else? - the song named after himself! You will find yourself - as Rochdalians must have done all those years ago - joining in on the refrain: "Hey, Bo Diddley!" and tapping out the rhythm: "shave and a haircut, two bits!"

Summer beauty: holiday essentials

Multi-use products are perfect for those summer holidays where you want to travel light or free up room in your suitcase for that extra pair of heels! We all have the following essentials in our handbag but did you know their multiple uses?

Let’s start with bronzer. Bronzing palettes are great for adding colour to warm up your complexion and leave a sunkissed glow to your skin - but did you know bronzer can be used anywhere on the body? It looks lovely swept down the shins for a touch of tan on those legs or as a quick fix to deepen the colour of your legs on an unexpected sunny day. Bronzer can also be applied to eyelids as an eyeshadow which really complements a sun kissed beach look.

If your bronzing palette has different shades then why not try using the lighter shades to highlight the under brow and the deeper shades in the eye crease for contour and definition? I would recommend St Tropez Bronzing palette.

Next is the highlighter pencil which has so many uses. Applied to the brow bone it can make your eyebrows appear more defined and make your brow bone pop. Applied to the centre of the upper and lower lip gives the illusion of fuller lips. Try it over your existing lip colours to alter and lighten and transform them into completely new shades; have a play and be creative.

Use on a blemish as a concealer, down the centre of the nose to contour or above the lip in the cupid’s bow to create a fuller looking top lip. You can even apply to your inner eye along the water line as an eye opener to make the whites of your eye look brighter.

Did you ever think you can use a lipstick as a blusher? Apply to the apples of your cheeks and blend well using your fingertips. If you have red/orange lipstick you can use under the eyes to conceal dark circles! Less is more and blend well, try it and see!

If you have a setting powder, you can use this to set your foundation and remove excess shine. It can also be applied over a lipstick to mattify or can be used under eyes as protection when applying a smokey eye.

We all need an SPF to protect our skin all year round. To save space for your holiday essentials why not use a CC Cream with a Factor 50 SPF (I would recommend PAYOT or Juliette Armand). This can then be used as a tinted moisturiser with a light coverage and at the same time protect you from the sun and its harmful rays.

Can you be a Can you be a Hospice Hero? Hospice Hero?

"Our Hospice is facing a £1 million shortfall and I am scared we will have to end vital services."

Springhill Hospice has been a lifeline to countless patients and their loved ones for the past 30 years, as thousands of people have found solace through the specialist free services, care and compassion they provide. However, the future of palliative care in Rochdale looks bleak, as Springhill Hospice entered a £1million shortfall in 2023.

The Hospice is continually looking at new ways to generate income and ways to tighten expenditures to prevent the reality of having to stop some of its services. Springhill has launched a regular giving appeal to help secure funds. Those who are able to give a regular gift to the Hospice can help to provide tailored end-of-life care to patients and their loved ones. Every gift, no matter the size, will help Springhill Hospice to continue to provide care and support to patients and their loved ones, who are going through the most challenging time of their lives.

FAMILIES ENJOY SUN-SOAKED EVENT AT HOPWOOD HALL'S COMMUNITY FUN DAY

Hopwood Hall College and University Centre opened its doors to thousands of visitors as it held an action-packed Community Fun Day.

The bustling event featured a number of family-friendly activities for the more than 1600 people who made their way to the sprawling Middleton Campus.

This included face painting, sports tournaments, samba dancing, virtual reality demonstrations and tours of its renowned animal enclosures.

A member of the Animal Care team, technician Jamie Caldwell, even had his dreadlocks chopped off in the name of charity.

In addition, young children tried their hand at technical skills as they rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into a number of interactive construction activities.

All in all it proved to be an unforgettable afternoon as people of all ages explored the sun-soaked campus and got a taste of the wonders that students get to enjoy on a daily basis.

This includes seeing the large variety of endangered creatures that are homed in the college’s animal enclosures.

Just some of the rare and wonderful animals that visitors had the opportunity to witness in person were flamingos, wallabies, meerkats, snakes and more.

Everyone from toddlers to grandparents flocked to see this wildlife before later supporting Jamie as he endured his first haircut in eight years to raise money for the Cikananga Wildlife Center.

This organisation works to protect endangered animals such as Bali Starlings, which while native to Indonesia are also cared for at Hopwood Hall.

Julia Heap, Principal and CEO of Hopwood Hall College and University Centre, said:

"We were over the moon to welcome so many families to the Community Fun Day at our Middleton Campus.

"The college is only getting bigger and better, so we relished the opportunity to give families a glimpse of some of our extraordinary facilities – as well as hear from the talented staff that we have working here.

"There were so many smiling faces and we’ve had such incredible feedback from those in attendance.

"I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who join used on the day because we’re so pleased they had fun!"

WHAT'S YOUR STYLE PERSONALITY?

Hey, Mollie here, the owner and founder of Pretty Parade, women’s boutiques. More recently, I have started my journey as a certified Personal Stylist!

For this feature, I thought I would do something a little different with you all. We often hear about knowing and dressing for your body shape, but we rarely hear about knowing and dressing for your style personality. So today I am here to give you a little glimpse into the different personality styles!

A style personality enables you to express yourself through the clothes you wear. You may be just one style personality or you may be a mix depending on your mood or occasion. Nonetheless you will most likely have a dominant style personality and while fashion changes season to season, true style personality will likely stay the same.

THE SIX STYLE PERSONALITY’S: CLASSIC STYLE PERSONALITY

Chic, elegant, well put together and rarely under the influence of fashion. Her colour palette tends to consist of many neutrals, including black, grey, navy, beige and white, and mostly she doesn’t like her clothes to shout.

Wardrobe Heroes: Blazer, Shirt Dress, Loafers

CREATIVE STYLE PERSONALITY

Showcases her creativity and her preference for unconventional fashion. She loves to combine different styles and will use unusual prints with striking colours. Her style can represent various elements of fashion - rock glam, quirky, artsy, vintage across decades.

Wardrobe Heroes: Slogan Tee’s, Detailed Clothing, High Shine PVC

NATURAL STYLE PERSONALITY

The easy-going girl next door, who will always choose comfortable, easy to maintain clothing with a natural, informal or beach look. She prefers light tailoring, not too many details or accessories. Her colour choices are usually inspired by a natural palette. Wardrobe Heroes: Birkinstocks, Soft Knits, Cami Dresses

URBAN/CASUAL STYLE PERSONALITY

Continuously evolving. She tends to be influenced by sub-culture rather than major trends. She makes feeling comfortable a priority. She will lean towards blacks, khakis, neutrals and white with pops of colour.

Wardrobe Heroes: Oversized dresses, Investment Sneakers, Denim

ROMANTIC STYLE PERSONALITY

Feminine and charming in her appearance, vocal in her adoration for everything pretty. Her overall appearance is soft and girly, with ladylike elements, anything with whimsical girly details, including ruffles, lace, pleats and florals.

Wardrobe Heroes: Denim, Floral Dresses, Ruffle Maxi Skirts, Headbands

DRAMATIC STYLE PERSONALITY

Likes to make an entrance and be noticed. She is glamorous, and confident. She likes to create drama in her looks, and is drawn to strong statement prints and vibrant, deep and intense colours. Practicality is not her priority.

Wardrobe Heroes: Structured Garments, Glam Shoes, Bold Jewellery

This is just a little glimpse into style personality. If you feel you need more direction in highlighting your style personality please just reach out.

Thank you so much for reading, Mollie x

Every month this year, Springhill Hospice is teaming up with a local solicitor to allow you to create a Will. These solicitors are kindly choosing to waive their usual fee, meaning you are able to donate this to Springhill instead; furthering vital patient care in your community.

NEW MURAL UNVEILED

A striking mural funded by Rochdale South Township has been unveiled at The Landings on Oldham Road, Rochdale; the culmination of a project which enabled people with lived experience of mental health conditions, learning disabilities and autism to revitalise the railway bridge.

The artwork was carried out by the creative tenants of Blue Pits Housing Action and Newbarn Limited. The letters were also designed by the individual tenants.

ELSIE'S SWIMMING SUCCESS

A huge well done to Elsie who recently completed 21 miles of swimming - that's 1344 lengths of the pools at her local Your Trust venues - and has raised over £700 for Springhill Hospice.

Elsie completed her last 10 lengths during her school swimming lesson at the end of June to finish the challenge with her parents, school friends, teachers and leisure centre staff all there to cheer her along as she finished.

The determined youngster wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported her along the way and donated.

COLLEGE’S GLITZY AWARD CEREMONY CELEBRATES STUDENT STARS

Hopwood Hall College and University Centre held its glitzy Students Awards 2023 – hot on the heels of being praised by Ofsted for making a strong contribution to meeting skills needs.

The annual event saw students and staff gathering on a gloriously sunny evening for the ceremony held at the Middleton Arena.

Presented by Principal and CEO Julia Heap, as well as members of the college’s Senior Leadership Team, it celebrated the young people who had shined the brightest in the recent academic year.

Julia Heap commented: "Our Student Awards 2023 saw us celebrating both our amazing students and the success of skills training at Hopwood Hall!

"Our entire college community has bright futures ahead of them, so it was our pleasure to hold this ceremony for those who had stood out from within a sea of stars."

This year marked the first ever T-Level Gold Star Award, which went to Design, Surveying and Planning student Kacie Bush. Meanwhile, the coveted Gold Star Award went to Health and Social Care learner Gina Khan.

RUN FOR FUN - WILLIAMS BMW ROCHDALE FUN RUN RETURNS

Entry for Williams BMW Rochdale one-mile Fun Run is now open, with walkers and runners invited to register for the event that returns this autumn for the first time in two years.

Before the half marathon and 10K runners set off on Sunday 8 October, fun runners will be under starter’s orders on The Esplanade in front of Rochdale Town Hall.

The event is chip timed and will retain its existing route, climbing up into Broadfield Park and taking a scenic route around the historic grounds. There’s a short rise past the statue of Rochdale’s political giant John Bright before entering the beautiful park. Once at the bandstand it’s all downhill to the finish line back on The Esplanade.

The one-mile fun run starts at 10am on Sunday 8 October, entry is £7 and finishers will receive a Williams BMW Rochdale Fun Run medal. Suitable for children aged 4+.

In 2021 the fun run saw over 150 runners taking part, and more are expected this October, so early booking is advised.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for events at Rochdale Borough Council who will be taking part in the fun run for WHAG - the charity that provides housing and support to vulnerable homeless women in Rochdale said:

"Our fun run is something for all the family to enjoy and the atmosphere is always fantastic. It’s a really friendly event that almost everyone can take part in. You’re welcome to walk, run, hop, skip or jump and wear fancy dress if you like. If you’re just beginning your journey to being more active, improving your fitness, looking for a relaxed and fun challenge or a fast sprint, then this is perfect!"

Jolly Josh, Maggie’s Manchester and Springhill Hospice are the official charities for the event. You are welcome to run to raise money for those or another charity of your choice.
