FROM THE

EDITOR THERE ARE FEW things in life more pleasing than starting a new year with fresh ideas and a relaxed mind. 2016 was filled with the best kind of disruption, fearlessness and fun, and I have no doubt that 2017 will be even more adventurous. We have a new feature in which two journalists debate a specific topic. This month is all about resolutions and whether to avoid or embrace them. January is Australia’s festival season – don’t miss out on these summer celebrations. Head to the Gold Coast for a week-long celebration of equestrian sports, from polo to horse racing with social events in-between. In keeping with the theme of summer sunshine, Gasworks Plaza graces our cover this month, boasting their Australia Day Seafood Festival – it’s one not to miss. Elsewhere in the mag, we have your accommodation needs sorted; whether you’re craving a quick getaway to the city, seaside or country this summer, there’s an option for you. We’re also focusing on the business side of fashion and meeting the Australian designers thriving at home and abroad. Brisbane’s dining scene is constantly expanding and we’ve discovered the top foodie trends that will be emerging in 2017. Culture plays a large part in January, with Australia Day being a significant moment to pay our respects to the people of our land. Enjoy the day and hold cultural diversity up high. On January 26, I’ll be officially accepting my Australian citizenship at City Hall – a day I’ll remember forever.

THE FUTURE OF FASHION Edda Hamar of Undress Runways sat down with Caitlyn Spanner to discuss the future of the sharing economy and how her newest project is set to revolutionise the fashion industry.

WE SHARE HOUSES through Airbnb and cars through Uber. And as of this year, a new and innovative way to share clothes will change the way we consume fashion. Edda Hamar, the founder of Undress Runways (Australia’s largest sustainable fashion runway event), will launch the Undress sharing platform early this year. Since its inception in 2011, Undress Runways has gone on to hold national runway shows, create sustainable fashion label Vihn, and publish a yearly magazine called Naked. A trailblazer in her field, Edda was named a UN Young Leader for the Sustainable Development Goals 2016-2017. Along with a dedicated team, Edda has shaped the way we look at sustainable fashion in Australia. Now, she’s turning her eye to transforming the global fashion industry. The Undress platform will be a seamless online peer-to-peer marketplace where users will be able to list, discover and borrow clothes. Open to users from all around the world, the service will also offer a review system much like Uber’s. “The future vision (hopefully not too far in the future) is that Undress will become a global community that can travel anywhere in the world,” says Edda. The Icelandic-born CEO says Undress users could visit her home country, for example, with 14

minimal luggage, and tap into a local’s climate-appropriate wardrobe. Edda also hopes to partner with Uber, allowing users to be picked up from the airport by a car carrying all the clothes they need for the duration of their stay. A car would also drop them back to the airport and return the clothes to the owner. “The idea is to bring back this value of quality and appreciation for good clothes,” Edda says. “We’ve lost the appreciation of the design process and loving a piece because it lasts.” Getting to this point has required Edda and her team at Undress Runways to adapt and evolve in order to remain relevant. In addition to the launch of sustainable label Vihn, Undress Runways has introduced technology to the business in order to keep up with current government focus on innovation and start-ups For Edda, it’s a simple matter: “Rather than getting people to change the way they behave, why don’t we just change the product?” After launching the Vihn label, Edda and her team felt that they still weren’t ticking all of the sustainable boxes. “While sustainable and ethical fashion is important and that’s the way everyone should be designing and producing, we’re still adding more stuff,” says Edda. “Everyone is still adding, and when you’re adding it’s going to end up in nature.”

EDDA HAMAR

“RATHER THAN GETTING PEOPLE TO CHANGE THE WAY THEY BEHAVE, WHY DON’T WE JUST CHANGE THE PRODUCT?”

JANUARY17

HOW UNDRESS WOR KS CREATE A PROFILE SEARCH FOR FASHION REQUEST TO BORROW GAIN APPROVAL BORROW AND PAY HAVE THE CLOTHES DELIVERED THROUGH RIDE-SHARE APP WEAR THE GARMENTS That’s why Vihn’s second collection will be exclusively for borrowing. This is an exciting concept for designers and consumers alike as it means there’s increased opportunity to create beautifully-crafted, one-of-a-kind designs rather than a small mass-produced collection that could end up as waste if it goes unsold. A concept like Undress was inevitable, and the adaptable attitude of the Undress Runways team only helped to speed up the process. Learning and evolving alongside the consumer has ensured that the needs of everyone involved in the supply chain are met. It has also allowed the goal of sustainability and ethical production to remain at the forefront. Edda hopes the sharing economy will change the rate of demand. With quick and easy solutions, stylemagazines.com.au

people will no longer need to look to fast fashion for a brand-new and exciting outfit. “The idea that people want something new to wear on Saturday night will never die,” says Edda. “Undress means that people can keep loving fashion without even realising that it’s sustainable.” Edda is unsure how the sharing economy will impact the developing nations that manufacture fast fashion. The luxury sector that relies on exclusivity may also see some changes with the introduction of shared clothing. Whatever the future brings, there’s no denying that a sustainable, streamlined and stylish method for buying and selling fashion is exciting. Welcome to Undress and the future of fashion!

HIT REFRESH IN 2017 Organisational experts Louisa Dyson and Helen Joy Butler share their top tips for getting your home, wardrobe and life into shape, writes Caitlyn Spanner. HELEN’S TIPS ON WHERE TO START YOUR HOLIDAY CLEAN: • The front door is a great place to start if you want to welcome new experiences and opportunities into your home and life. • You can create momentum by shifting the energy out from the centre of your house so that you are motivated to continue working through your whole home. • If you’re easily frustrated, start in the area of your home that’s causing you the most grief. • If you have low energy or are overwhelmed, try starting somewhere small. • Start anywhere! This is ideal for the procrastinator or perfectionist. HOW TO BE HEALTHIER, HAPPIER AND MORE ORGANISED, ACCORDING TO HELEN: • Have systems for everything, from when the washing gets done right through to when you open the mail. • Do things as you go (e.g. wash up while dinner cooks on the stove). • Constantly remove unneeded items and clutter from your home. • Get everyone you live with onboard to keep the home organised. • Think about what you need before you spend. • Slow down, pause, breathe. Your house doesn’t have to look like a show home. • Have one to-do list and use it. • Think ahead. This will help you see what’s urgent and what’s coming up, and help you see any potential clashes or changes you need to make to your schedule. • Connect with nature, create, move your body, daydream, meditate, do something you love, and show gratitude.

LOUISA’S WARDROBE DECLUTTERING TIPS: Clear a few hours in your diary to complete this task in full. You’ll need three bins or bags for the following piles: Donate, Ditch, Dry-clean. Create a space to pile up all the items that you want to keep and have vacuum bags or storage boxes on hand for any winter clothes. As you pull each item out of your wardrobe, ask yourself the following questions: Have I worn this recently? Have I worn it in the last two years? Do I have multiple/similar items of this style? Will this item last another season? Does it make me feel good? If you answer yes to the majority of the questions, then these items should either be going straight into storage for winter or they should be checked over to make sure they don’t need drycleaning/mending. If you answer no to the majority, then decide if the item is good enough to be donated to charity or if it should just be ditched. For any items you end up donating or ditching, make sure you keep a note of any wardrobe staples that you’ll need to replace in the future. (Did someone say shopping?) When putting your clothing back in your wardrobe, group similar items together and check on the condition of your hangers while you’re at it. To complete your decluttering, put the items to be donated and dry-cleaned straight into the car so they are ready to be dropped off. Put the ditch items straight into the bin. Label, seal and store the remaining items immediately so you aren’t left with any clutter or further tasks. READ MORE ONLINE

SOCIAL MEDIA OVERHAUL Instead of going on a digital detox, transform social media to suit what you value most in life, writes Hannah Doody. INCREASED GLOBAL AWARENESS of mental health and mindfulness has resulted in a shift towards critical assessment of social media. People are asking, “Is there a different way I could be spending those few minutes in my day? How is the content on my feed impacting my health and mental state?” The internet is flooded with articles about how quitting social media can change your life, but something about going cold turkey for this medium doesn’t resonate with me. Maybe it’s the fact that my work relies heavily on social media, or perhaps it’s because I’ve always

been told to set realistic, achievable goals (which, let’s face it, doesn’t include giving up Facebook). Social media is a part of our lives whether we like it or not. Instead of trying to remove ourselves from it completely, why don’t we force it to adapt in a way that supports our deepest values as humans? Design thinker Tristan Harris examined this idea in a TED Talk last year. He points out that technology often interrupts us from what we really mean to be doing. At work and at play, we’re constantly distracted by pings and pop-ups, and instead of helping us better manage our time, it often feels like our tech is stealing it from us.

Is 2017 the time to sell?

Tristan discusses a design concept that filters messages, depending on your state, to create conscious interruptions instead of mindless ones. While this movement is still in the early stages, we can start minimising the negative impacts of social media by turning off any immediate notifications. Without the regular prompt to check social media, we can carry on with our day. There are many ways that our tech can evolve, for better or worse. Personally, I hope we don’t continue down a road where apps compete for how much time they can take from us. Let’s focus on technology that encourages time well spent.

Place Agent Shannon Harvey answers four top questions about selling this year. What can we expect in 2017? The results of Brexit and the US election are rippling through the economy. We will have to see if America’s rise in interest rates is mirrored in Australia. Will the “housing bubble” burst in 2017? Housing markets always rise and fall. Do your research, if it’s your dream home and you plan to live there for years, maybe paying an extra $20k is worth it. But if you are looking to on-sell for a profit in the near future, perhaps hold out for the right price.

Is 2017 a good time to sell property? Yes. It will be a great time to upgrade. The modern family home with a small yard is soughtafter so 2017 will be a great time to cash in if you are looking to sell. What advice would you give to someone looking to sell? Stand out from your competitors and advertise to as many people as you can to find the best buyer!

THE OPINION GAMES Caitlyn Spanner and Sarah Taviani weigh in on New Year’s resolutions.

CON: [CAITLYN] EVERY YEAR ON the last day of school holidays, once I’d covered my diary in brown butcher’s paper and magazine cut-outs, I’d fill it with ambitious New Year’s resolutions (become school captain, make the State touch team, get a boyfriend). I promptly forgot about them until April, when I would cringe at how I’d failed my once-motivated self. This ritual followed me into adulthood until one year, while preparing for uni, I decided enough was enough.

I URGE YOU TO BE KIND TO YOURSELF IN 2017. BOYCOTT RESOLUTIONS THAT ARE ONLY GOING TO LEAD TO GUILT! Instead of setting unrealistic resolutions just because January had come around again (give up sugar, run every day, achieve High Distinctions at uni), I decided to be kinder to myself, and I urge you to do the same in 2017. Boycott resolutions that are only going to lead to guilt! Instead, be honest with yourself, set a goal in June just because, and don’t let the pressure of an unnecessary resolution hang over your head all year.

18

PRO: [SARAH] AT ONE POINT I swore off all soft drink for a year and emerged victorious, only to discover that my cousin had finished the lemonade (my prize) at 11.59pm like an absolute goblin. But not all resolutions need to be a black/white, win/lose situation. Think of resolutions as an end goal. You want to save money? Cut back bit by bit rather than just hoarding everything like Smaug at the Lonely Mountain. (Although you do look good in gold.) You want to take up exercise? That doesn’t mean you lace up your shoes and race Usain Bolt on January 1. Unless you have Usain’s number, in which case hook me up. Work up to your goal. Take things slow and accept that you’ll fail throughout the year at least a few times – the important thing is that you try again. Hot tip: have the Chariots of Fire song on hand to obnoxiously celebrate your victory.

ACCEPT THAT YOU’LL FAIL THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AT LEAST A FEW TIMES – THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU TRY AGAIN.

NURTURED IN THE NEST An innovative new model of care, Nest Private Maternity is making private pregnancy services more affordable. WHEN IT COMES to pregnancy care, one size doesn’t fit all. Not everyone can afford to pay top dollar to receive quality care – and now you don’t have to. That’s where Nest Private Maternity decided to do things differently. For some women with private health insurance, the out-of-pocket costs of private obstetrics are prohibitively expensive. Nest gives these women access to specialist obstetricians and private hospital services for their deliveries. Operating a shared-care model, Nest patients are cared for by midwives and obstetricians before and after their delivery. Nest is currently the only maternity clinic offering shared care between midwives and obstetricians at such a low cost. Nest discloses all fees online so you can confidently decide whether this model is right for you.

While your appointments and delivery may not be with the same clinician, the collaborative approach at Nest will ensure that you feel right at home with their highly-trained and experienced team members. Are you modern and open-minded and up for trying something a little different? Do you want to make use of your private health insurance, get exceptional care and know right from the start what your expenses will be? Nest Private Maternity could work for you. If you have a Medicare card, you can book a free, no-obligation initial consultation with one of Nest’s midwives, so you can get a feel for whether Nest is right for you. KEEPING BOOKS IN FASHION

“People want a physical object to carry, to keep, to read, and to give as a gif t.”

In the age of e-readers and inkless novels, the printed word prevails, writes Rachel Westbury. THERE IS A certain sensory magic that comes with reading a physical book: the feel of the novel in your hands; the movement of its pages; that enchanting bookish scent. “The digital revolution gave us a few frights in the beginning, especially when there was a triple digit growth in e-books,” says Fiona Stager, co-owner of West End’s Avid Reader bookshop. But according to Fiona, the e-book hype has plateaued and she’s seeing a steady return to the printed book. “People want a physical object to carry, to keep, to read, and to give as a gift,” says Fiona.

So how do independent bookstores such as Avid Reader help keep the printed word alive? Fiona says the key lies in fostering a community with a shared love of books. “We’re certainly doing a lot more events than in the past, and I think book clubs are an important part of keeping books alive,” she says. “I think people like to come together to talk about

books and to get the chance to see, hear, and meet an author.” After growing up with books, Fiona shares that she couldn’t imagine a world without print. “Books stay in fashion because people want them. People want bookshops in their communities [and] it’s great when they support them. It helps keep books alive.”

WHERE LOCALS MEET We sat down to chat with Gasworks Plaza Centre Manager Emmanuel Raissis. What can we expect from Gasworks Plaza in the new year? We are kicking off the new year with the Australia Day Seafood Festival on Thursday, January 26. Hosted by Reef Seafood + Sushi, Vogue Nationale Hairdressing and Gasworks Plaza, it’s sure to have your tastebuds dancing as we celebrate all things Australian. What’s something people may not know about Gasworks Plaza? We’ve just recently finished our car park upgrade with a new parking guidance lighting system – look for the green lights for available parking! We have also introduced a registration recognition system and easier car park access off Skyring Terrace. What do you love most about your job at Gasworks Plaza? Above all, the people.

stylemagazines.com.au

I love the diversity of the role, that every day is different. I enjoy the interaction with customers, retailers and commercial clientele. Meeting new people spices up my day. What’s your favourite thing about Gasworks Plaza? The green space in the Gasometer – a place where you can soak up the sun or the shade. As a newbie to Gasworks, I enjoy the Gasometer Light and Sound Show, which runs at 7pm and 9pm every Friday and Saturday night. Where will we find you on a Saturday night? Enjoying the culinary delights at Gasworks Plaza! Where will we find you on a Sunday morning? Relaxing with a coffee in hand and a good book in the other whilst enjoying some old school vinyl.

DEBATE TO #CHANGETHEDATE Should we rethink Australia Day? Kelly Forbes discusses why we need to create a new day to celebrate. WHEN SHOULD WE celebrate Australia Day? It’s a simple question, and one that will no doubt be asked many times as we dip our toes into the new year. The call for culturally-inclusive celebrations has been heard, and small movements of change have begun, with many determined to recognise and respect the tragic history behind January 26. The Fremantle Council led the way, announcing an alternative event on January 28 (a move later blocked by the Australian Government). But the question of Australia Day’s significance

BBQ SMOKING DAY!

Sunday, January 15th, 2017 See facebook page for details

remains unanswered. The debate is not about the celebration itself. We simply need a date that does not ignore the suffering that Indigenous people endured in order to recognise the formal colonisation of New South Wales by a bunch of Englishmen. With the advances we have made in recent years to promote multiculturalism and unity, we are now in a position to choose a national day of celebration that is not clouded by grief. Instead of a day of division, the Australia Day celebration and its ode to our freedom

and prosperity should sit equally with dates such as ANZAC Day – a commemoration of our harrowing journey and continued growth towards a strong and inclusive society. And, unfortunately, January 26 doesn’t offer this opportunity. While Australia Day currently enjoys convenient timing for a summer BBQ, it’s time to rethink when exactly our nation should be celebrated so that all Australians can enjoy it. With knowledge comes power to unite our spectacularly diverse nation – one sausage sizzle at a time.

CREATING WAVES IN PARIS Victoria’s Secret no more. Here’s how to achieve those luscious curls you’ve always envied, writes Annabelle Beirne. THE SOLUTION TO all our summer hair problems is here. The Beachwaver Pro, an amazing professional rotating curling iron, is now available in Australia so we can emulate celebrity waves with ease. If you’ve stalked snippet videos of the recent Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Paris and marvelled at Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid’s perfect waves while they strutted down the cheeky and OTT runway, this is the answer. The one-of-a-kind product emerged in the glamorous world of hair styling in 2010. Created by renowned celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa,

the Beachwaver Pro is to thank for the flawless locks that are sported by celebrities on the red carpet and covers of magazines. Sarah felt like she was constantly having to explain to editors how she created beach waves. So in 2010, she decided to sketch her idea. Two years later, it had come to life. The Beachwaver Pro went from the secret of celebrities and Victoria’s Secret shows to being a life-saver for women all around the world. If you’re looking for something to help you achieve those flawless beach waves, give this a whirl!

REALISTIC RESOLUTIONS Break the cycle this year and make a commitment you can actually keep, writes Sophie Catsoulis. AS THE CLOCK strikes midnight on January 1, many people start to (drunkenly) profess grand plans for the year to come. These ridiculous resolutions can include everything from regrettable (but so on-trend) haircuts to soon-to-be-unused gym memberships. But there’s a way that you can save time and energy, and I’m going to let you in on the secret: resolutions should be realistic. While the new year brings with it a sense of hope and the perfect time to begin to better yourself, setting unfeasible (or unappealing) objectives is simply setting yourself up for failure and disappointment. Instead, why not strive for something more suitable? For the workaholic: Forget setting your sights on stacks of extra work; aim to set aside some

time each week just for you. Put down the phone, pack away the proposals and marvel at your increased productivity. For the newly-single: Try out a new hobby or pick up an old passion. It could be playing music, running marathons or baking – just put the past out of your mind. You could even meet someone like-minded along the way! For the ambitious athlete: Don’t lock yourself into a contract at the gym. If you’re keen to get fit, start with something free and fun. Grab a (furry) friend and take a hike, or download an app and get active at home. For the family-focused: Shake your home-life rut and mix up the activities on the family front. Spend time with loved ones doing something totally new. Go-karting? Count me in!

BYE-BYE, IMPULSE BUYS This new app is about to revolutionise the way we buy, wear and shed our clothing, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.

32

DISCOVER THE SMARTPHONE APP THAT IS CHANGING THE WAY WE BUY AND SELL OUR WARDROBE.

Here is a list of my Shedd commandments to ensure you’re successful when selling your wardrobe: DON’T use images that are blurry or misleading. DO take photos of your ironed item being worn or hung neatly on a hanger. DON’T take a photo of your item with a crowded or messy background. DO write a short and descriptive caption. The more detail the better but a novel about where you’ve worn the item is unnecessary. Overall, I found Shedd really easy to use and I loved the approval process of the Shedd team, which keeps the standard of the items relative.

HERO IMAGE: FLAUNTER

THE PROCESS OF dealing with our preloved clothing has always been daunting. Until now. Mobile auction app Shedd has recently been launched in Australia. The buy, wear, shed ethos of the app encourages you to sell your preloved fashion and buy someone else’s, so you can be part of a seamless sustainable cycle of fashion. In the past, I’ve tried flipping my impulse purchases in every way possible: eBay, Depop, markets, Facebook... at one point I even created a pop-up boutique in the spare room of our house. So I decided to put this new app to the test, and I learnt some very helpful lessons along the way. Uploading images and using hashtags for Shedd will be familiar territory for anyone who has ever used Instagram. I quickly found out that the image you take is everything! I scrolled straight past any images that were dimly lit or blurry. And I always wanted to see what the clothing looked like on someone else before buying it for myself. Most importantly, it’s good etiquette (and in your best interest as a seller) to respond to potential buyers promptly and lock in a sale before they find someone else’s preloved items.

DUTY OF CARE Is the fashion industry serious about social responsibility or is it all smoke and mirrors? By Hannah Doody. THE FASHION INDUSTRY is worth a ridiculous $3 trillion globally and it accounts for two per cent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product. So it’s reassuring that the industry as a whole has started to wake up to its social and environmental responsibility in recent years. In the last year alone, Adidas created a shoe out of ocean garbage, and Miu Miu began offering an orthopaedic sandal for the health- and fashionconscious. The notion of fashion for fashion’s sake is being superseded by a need to embrace fashion’s duty to society.

Adidas x Parley ocean plastic shoes In fact, it has become so commonplace for companies to position themselves in this light that the terms “sustainable” and “ethical” have become somewhat of a cliché – umbrella terms used to indicate that a company is committed to being environmentally, economically, and socially aware. This wave of social awareness is largely due to the demands of consumers. As a direct result of the outpouring of public opinion, companies have begun using social responsibility as a marketing tool, though some continue to do so with only partial implementation.

New styles and colours in store and online now.

ANN3470

IN 1963, PANTONE founder Lawrence Herbert created a system for recognising, matching and communicating colours. His insight led to the innovation of the Pantone Matching System; a book of standardised colours in fan format. Today, Pantone is globally recognised as the official language for accurate colour communication in a variety of industries. This summer, Melbourne label Gorman has joined forces with the world’s authority on colour to create an 11-piece collection. You’ll find a selection of classic Gorman summer staples featuring the brand’s iconic polka-dot print in an array of bright Pantone colours. The collection is available in-store and online now.

Sure, sustainability improves the image of many companies, but there is a danger that this approach could turn into “greenwash” – false claims used only to gain a competitive advantage. The issue with this approach is that the main purpose of all this (accepting responsibility) will be overshadowed by its profitability. It’s for you to decide the authenticity: are ocean garbage shoes and ortho-chic just PR stunts used to create an illusion of social responsibility? Or are they a sign of truly responsible acts to come from the fashion industry? Only time will tell.

NEW-YEAR NATURALS

IS YOUR RING AN INVESTMENT?

GET MORE FOR LESS

THERE HAS BEEN a worldwide shift towards going “natural” in beauty products and food, and even home design. But using natural products in home design and interior styling is not totally new – it’s a trend that comes back into fashion, time after time. Earthy, natural textures such as timber, granite, marble and metals seem to work their way back into interior styling, and will certainly continue to do so in 2017. In particular, natural stone is a product that always looks stylish. Whether used in a modern or traditional kitchen or bathroom, it always exudes timeless elegance. For anyone looking for a style that won’t go out of fashion, our advice is to incorporate natural products somewhere in your project, whether that be a marble splashback or earthy timber accents. Designer Kitchens is celebrating 27 years of business in 2017. A long-standing West End business, we are also celebrating one year at our Newstead showroom!

AN ENGAGEMENT RING is one of the few life purchases that is rarely sold or traded. As a result, we don’t often think of it as being an investment piece. But it’s time for us to change that thinking. Certain engagement rings are proving to be excellent investments that will become valuable heirlooms for the future generations. The last five years have seen Argyle pink diamonds increase in value by (on average) 25 per cent every year. And while you may have once assumed you needed a substantial sum to purchase one, you can own an Argyle pink diamond engagement ring from $5000. Whether the pink diamond is in the centre, in a surrounding halo or in the band of your engagement ring, incorporating pink diamonds is a great way to personalise your ring and make it totally unique. But be sure to come in and see the range soon; the Argyle pink diamond mine is set to run out sometime between 2018 and 2020.

A HUGE MYTH in workplaces is that working more hours will help you achieve more. In fact, over-working can actually lead to you being less productive. This year, my resolution is to help people understand how to be productive and successful at work, as it is the biggest return on investment for you. Here are my productivity tips: • Focus on what you want to achieve every day to create a positive mindset and momentum. • Reset and start again. The reality is, our brains can only pay attention for 45 minutes at a time. Allow yourself to take breaks throughout the day to stay engaged. • Being happy results in increased work productivity. Happy people get more done as their positive energy can translate to activity. • Figure out your energy flow rather than setting yourself a strict task list. Focus your energy on what’s important. • Do a meeting audit and, wherever possible, opt out of time-wasting meetings that you really don’t need to attend.

WHAT IS PLAYBASED LEARNING?

WEDDING WISH LIST

BRIGHT WHITE EYES ARE BACK

YOUR CHILD CAN learn so much through play. At Goodstart Early Learning, our educators embed elements of teaching within the play experiences that children are naturally drawn to, and therefore more likely to stay engaged with. Queensland State Manager Dr Lesley Jones says Goodstart explores different aspects of early numeracy and literacy with the children by encouraging those who are exploring gardening to chart how their veggie patch has changed. Another group of children may be supported to draw a “menu” for their pretend restaurant, while yet another child who is deeply interested in dinosaurs may be encouraged to discuss and document the similarities and differences between the various dinosaurs they come across in their play. This gentle and encouraging avenue of introducing children to early literacy skills such as pre-writing and drawing, and mathematical concepts of classifying and charting is explored through play in ways that are authentic to each child at Goodstart Early Learning.

SINCE 2005, WE have fit out over 3000 weddings. From this, we have been able to develop an extensive wedding supplier list. Brisbane is fortunate to have some many great wedding vendors, from world-famous photographers to Australian and world-renowned designers. So with the new year upon us and this being one of the most popular times for a proposal and engagements, make sure you have your wedding priorities in order. People and places usually book out up to 12 months in advance, so I would suggest the following priorities: • Photographer • Reception venue • Ceremony venue • Celebrant • Wedding dress Wedding suits should be organised after the bride and bridesmaids’ dresses have been organised, yet still three to four months before the wedding. Pop into the store to have the perfect suit fitted.

ITCHY, DRY, IRRITATED eyes: something you need to live with, or a condition that can be easily managed and treated? Dry eye syndrome, or chronic dry eye, is a common condition that affects more than 75 per cent of people at some point in their life. Aside from causing great discomfort and irritation, it can interfere with your daily lifestyle and give the appearance of tired, unhealthy eyes. Air pollution, artificial lighting, smart phones and medications all make dry eyes a challenge. Unfortunately, you can’t always overcome these difficulties with short-term relief treatments such as lubricating eye drops. However, a new non-invasive long-term treatment has finally been made available. At Madonna Rigney Optometry, we offer our clients the innovative IPL technology service to put an end to irritated eyes. Three gentle, 20-minute treatments stimulate the oil glands in the eyelid, reactivating and preserving them, resulting in whiter, moisturised and more comfortable eyes.

IT’S ALL ESSENTIAL Enjoy everlasting summer with resort fashion in 2017, writes Caitlyn Spanner. RESORTWEAR WAS RECENTLY introduced to the fashion calendar as a pre-collection to the traditional two seasons of summer and winter. As a result, we’re now seeing collections all year round to meet consumer demand. Which means more choice for everyone! So what exactly is resort fashion? Well, think of it as those special items you’d pack for a resort holiday; swimwear, beach cover-ups and hats. Think lightweight and breathable fabrics including linen, beautiful textures such as straw and crochet, and fun, holiday-inspired shapes in the form of jewellery, sunglasses and bags. Play with primary colours and classic shapes for a sophisticated take on beachwear. The best thing about living in Australia is that it’s acceptable to wear resort fashion all year long! Here are the essentials to keep you inspired for a breezy 2017.

FOOD+DRINK Madame Rouge interior

Cocktails

FRENCH AFFAIR

Poulpe: chargrilled octopus, kipflers, roast peppers and paprika

Inspired by candlelit old-style bistros in France, Madame Rouge has stolen our hearts and tastebuds, writes Christie Sutherland. E’CCO BISTRO MANAGER Mary Randle has opened a classic French-inspired restaurant in the Fortitude Valley space that once housed Gordita. Madame Rouge Bar & Bistro is a handsome and moody venue with draped curtains hiding the charismatic interiors from the outside world. Upon entry, we were met with a striking red carpet, chandeliers, cosy bench seating, dark wood tables and a marble bar. The French soundtrack drifting through the speakers takes you away within moments, filling you with excitement. The menu was created by Mary’s partner, Philip Johnson, owner of E’cco Bistro. Served up by Head Chef Matt Short, highlights on the menu include gratinated goats’ cheese soufflé that just melts in your mouth, chargrilled octopus with kipfler, slow-cooked duck leg on a bed of Puy lentils and kale, and a John Dory special. The traditional and curated cocktail list is something to be reckoned with, and it’s hard not to swoon at the sight of the cocktail bartenders; add a few nibbles while you wait and time will fly by. The predominantly French wine list hits all price points and is well matched to the food. As for the desserts... order them all. Jokes. But do not stylemagazines.com.au

leave without having tasted the crème caramel, the vanilla bean ice-cream profiteroles, and the nougat glacé with fresh raspberries. In addition to the dessert offerings, the liqueur delights are a sensation to keep you in the world of Madame Rouge even longer. I recommend the Montenegro, a digestive that will complement all of the goodness that you have savoured. In keeping with the mood of the venue, Mary Randle and Philip Johnson provide a level of hospitality like no other, and from the moment you walk in the door you are treated to service that is oh-so-French. Madame Rouge Bar & Bistro is a top-shelf addition to the Brisbane restaurant scene, and one that I will keep retreating to for an evening or lunchtime rendezvous. There is nothing old about this old-style French bistro; the infectious culture and desirable delights are yours to enjoy.

PUTTING A MODERN SPIN ON TRADITIONAL GREEK CUISINE, THE LAMB SHOP IS A DESTINATION WHERE FAST FOOD IS DONE WELL. KING STREET, BRISBANE’S NEW DINING HUB, WILL WELCOME THE LAMB SHOP’S SECOND LOCATION IN LATE JANUARY. THELAMBSHOP.COM.AU

FASHIONABLE FOOD 2016 was the year of the freakshake, fancy doughnuts and pasta-filled cheese wheels. Here are the food trends that will be taking over menus in 2017, writes Hannah Doody. No more kale: Remember when kale was a representation of all that is healthy? Seaweed will take over as the greenery of choice for its ability to pack umami flavours into broths such as ramen. Meanwhile, look out for moringa, the latest superfood. Grown in Haiti, Africa and parts of Latin America, these leaves are drawing interest from trend-watchers for their nutritional content. Vegetarian comfort food: According to Pinterest, “veggies” rose by 336 per cent in searches for comfort food last year. This means people will be opting for healthy comfort food – think vegetarian pizzas or lasagna with eggplant instead of meat. Bowls: First there were acai bowls. Then there were poke bowls. This year, eating from bowls will be more popular than ever as restaurants jump on this food trend. Keep an eye out for more servings of Korean bibimbap and other hearty meals during your next dinner date. 38

Meat substitutes: As vegetarianism, veganism and plant-based eating becomes more mainstream, we will see a shift away from meat. Instead, there will be more “meat‑like” vegetables such as jackfruit, chickpeas, fungi and legumes to provide extra protein. Food-waste frenzy: Consumers and companies alike are working to reduce food waste by repurposing what would normally be thrown away. For example, watermelon rinds are being made into pickles, and you can explore new ways to make rice using cauliflower stems. Dosha dining: Who doesn’t love Indian street food? And if it has turmeric, all the better. But there’s another trend from India that’s gaining popularity: ayurveda. According to ayurveda, the three mind-body types (doshas) express energyunique blends of physical, emotional, and mental characteristics that will help to identify the right food choices for your constellation. new year.. NEW YOU Our body language can change other people’s perceptions, and even our own body chemistry.

BE YOUR OWN INSPIRATION

BODY LANGUAGE As revealed by social psychologist Amy Cuddy, our body language can change other people’s perceptions of us. It can even affect our own body chemistry. Keeping your head held high, shoulders back and puffing out your chest can all help to reduce mental anxiety.

WE ALWAYS INTEND to make this year better than the last, and it is universally acknowledged that confidence can often be the key to success. Contrary to popular belief, confidence isn’t something that will instantly appear as soon as we acquire an impressive bank account, an enviable wardrobe or a six-pack. Confidence is something that comes from our mind and it is directly linked to how we perceive ourselves. Be your own inspiration this year and emulate that enviable confidence with these tips to help you achieve your 2017 goals.

Now is the time to start kicking goals with new-found confidence, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.

MIND OVER MATTER We all experience hurdles in life, some bigger than others, but focusing on the positive when things are less than perfect will help you to overcome or make the best of your situation.

IN GOOD COMPANY Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people is important. If someone else believes you can accomplish something, you’re more likely to believe in yourself as well. With that being said, treating yourself the way you would treat your friends and loved ones will elevate you to become your biggest supporter. SWEAT IT OUT Proven to help minimise stress and anxiety, exercise is the best way to sweat out the small stuff and release endorphins, which trigger a positive feeling in the body. READ MORE ONLINE

NEW YEAR, NEW SMILE Let Le Tooth help you dazzle the new year with the pearly whites you’ve been dreaming about. JANUARY BRINGS AN opportunity to reflect on the year that was, and make resolutions for the year ahead. Many aim to improve their general wellbeing, but what about your dental health? The owner of Le Tooth, Dr Hieu Le, explains the impact that your dental health can have on the rest of your body. “Dental health is a huge contributing factor to your overall health,” says Dr Le. “Your dental health can affect your body in many ways. Bacterial buildup and decay in the mouth can lead to lowered immunity, bad breath and poor chewing function. This can impact your diet, your confidence and your overall wellbeing.” According to Dr Le, when you have dental disease in your mouth, your body is constantly fighting it. This leaves you with a lowered immune

response and makes you more susceptible to colds and flus. Many people avoid making dental appointments for as long as possible, but the new year is the perfect time to break that bad habit and revamp your dental health. “If someone has been putting off getting dental treatment, we recommend coming for a consultation; this means meeting the dentist and getting to know them before you proceed with any treatment,” says Dr Le. “Also, do your research. Ask friends or family if

they can recommend a dentist,” he adds. Le Tooth offers a range of treatments to ensure that your pearly whites are kept in peak condition. According to the team at Le Tooth, the most popular services in the new year are cosmetic treatments and tooth whitening. Kickstart the new year and book an appointment online today and redeem a promotional offer for all new patients. LE TOOTH 3/73-77 RUSSELL ST, WEST END P 3117 9900 LETOOTH.COM.AU

STAY COOL AND LOOK HOT! The trouble with long summer days, scorching heat and humidity is that your melting makeup can have you looking like a hot mess by midday.

Brooke Jesberg

HOT SUMMER PACKAGE $145 (SAVE $55) HERE’S HOW YOU can stop the summer melt and still look fab: • Forget about diamonds because lash extensions and tints are a girl’s best friend. Extensions and tints remove the need for mascara while helping to frame and open up your eyes. The extensions last for weeks, giving you extra volume and va-va-voom. You’ll be gorgeous and smudgefree for pool parties and days at the beach, and you’ll stay looking fab and fresh all day, every day, even first thing in the morning! • Eyebrow tints are the ideal summer statement, as brows frame and define your face. With a combo of perfectly-defined brows and lash extensions, you won’t need shadow or liner.

• Fingers and toes painted in fun, bright summer colours always make you look well-groomed. Shellac is your answer to a chip-free mani and pedi as it stays gorgeously glossy for days. Cute coral, bright pink, cool lime and baby blue are my picks for flirty and fun summer nail colours. • Treat yourself to my all-time favourite skin treatment: a natural herbal peel! It will leave your skin smooth and glowing, without the need for any cosmetics. • Of course, you can’t go past a natural-looking spray tan in summer. Be sure to exfoliate with an oil-based scrub and apply a water-based moisturiser to get the best results from your spray tan.

FOR HALF SET LASH EXTENSIONS, BROW TINT, BROW SCULPTURE AND SPRAY TAN. • And lastly, use the extraordinary tinted mineral BB cream from Alex Cosmetic. This product heals and nourishes your skin, evens out skin tones, and doesn’t clog your pores. It even provides sun protection. Be cool, look hot with a bright lippie! Happy 2017! DO THE NEEDLES HURT?

RECOGNISING ENDOMETRIOSIS

COSMETIC MOLE REMOVAL

“HOW MUCH DO the needles hurt?” This is a common question but not one that is easy to answer, because everyone has a different pain threshold. Here’s what you need to know. The needles used in sclerotherapy are very fine. They are a slightly larger gauge that acupuncture needles but much smaller than vaccination needles. Pain may not arise from tissue expansion. If the needle tip is not accurately placed inside the lumen of the vein then, rather than running through the vein, the injected sclerosant can spill outside the vein and cause the tissue to expand. This will cause pain in the same way that a “boil” does. Small amounts of spillage will always occur, but skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment to help minimise pain. Some areas tend to be more sensitive than others, such as behind the knee and around the ankle. Here, the doctor will always use the finest needles possible and select sclerosants least likely to cause pain.

IF A DISEASE affects one in 10 women worldwide, you would expect to hear a lot about it. But awareness of endometriosis – a chronic condition affecting female reproductive organs – is so low that many women go without a correct diagnosis for up to 10 years. Endometriosis occurs when cells similar to those lining the uterus (the endometrium) grow outside the uterus. This can result in a range of symptoms that can be experienced to differing extents; some women experience none. See your GP for a referral to a gynaecologist if you have been experiencing: • Painful periods that interfere with normal life • Pain during or after sex • Heavy bleeding during or outside your period • Bladder and bowel issues, including diarrhoea, constipation, frequent urination and bloating While it cannot be cured, endometriosis is able to be managed, and early diagnosis and treatment can help to reduce the severity of the disease. If something doesn’t feel right, make sure you seek help as early as possible.

DO YOU HAVE a mole or skin tag that causes irritation or makes you feel self-conscious? Don’t let it bother you any longer! We remove moles and skin tags on a daily basis and you don’t even need a scalpel or stitches. Cosmetic Mole Removal is a delicate radiofrequency shave procedure that removes benign (non-cancerous) moles or skin tags. In the sunny Australian climate, moles are quite common. The vast majority of moles that appear on the skin before the age of 30 are commonly non-cancerous, but they can cause irritation on the skin, or they may just be a cosmetic nuisance, especially if they are located on the face or neck. At Cosmetic Image Clinics, we use the hightech gold standard Ellman Surgitron machine so there is no cutting or sutures required, unlike surgical excision. Cosmetic Mole Removal is a walk-in walk-out procedure, with little aftercare required, so you can return to your normal activities the same day.

BUSTING BROW MYTHS

YOUR RIGHT TO OPTIONS

TREAT YOUR BODY WELL

“DON’T PLUCK FROM above; only pluck from below the eyebrow.” I’m sure you’ve heard this directly from your mum or read it in a magazine at some point in your life. The theory behind this method is that if you want to lift the eyebrow off the eye, you have to take the hairs from underneath. But we’re not living in the 1920s anymore. Scoopedout, tadpole-like brows are a result of years of miscommunication within the beauty industry. In truth, every brow is different. We can’t all achieve the perfect face-framing shape by taking hairs solely from the underside. To get the best out of your brow, you need to look at what kind of eyebrow you actually have before changing it. Is it thick, sparse, long, short, straight or angular? One brow might only need three hairs taken away, where another might need 50. Our Arch Angels are our secret to success. They can combine what your brows are like and what you want them to look like to create the perfect brow just for you!

WOMEN CHOOSE TO preserve their eggs for a variety of reasons; they may be undergoing treatment for cancer or looking to focus on their career, or maybe they have yet to meet someone they want to have children with. Each individual reason is valid, and consideration of the issue recognises a desire to be a parent at some point, or to at least have the opportunity. Preserving eggs involves removing the oocytes (female egg cells) then freezing them, so that they can later be thawed, fertilised and transferred back into the woman’s uterus. Although it is still considered a “developing technique” and there are no associated guarantees, egg freezing is an exciting and rapidly progressive area in which success rates have been demonstrated. For us, it is rewarding to see the joy of a much-wanted pregnancy. Perhaps the most heartbreaking moment is having to tell someone that they have no options left. This is why I see egg freezing as such a valid endeavour; it gives women the options they deserve.

SELF-ACCEPTANCE IS A key factor in healthy, long-term weight loss. Unfortunately, we can think negatively about our bodies and take for granted just how many functions they perform for us. Poor body image and chronic dieting are attitudes and behaviours that are destructive to your self-worth. Instead of focusing on what you have to lose, why not focus on what you could gain from a healthier outlook? It’s common to feel trapped in the dieting cycle. Finding support to help you realign your relationship with food will help you achieve a happier, healthier lifestyle. A positive mindset can work wonders for your self-image. A comprehensive and structured approach to nutrition, exercise and mindset such as the one offered by the Wesley LifeShape program will help you develop a balanced and positive relationship with your body. If you’re looking for a way to break the dieting cycle, Wesley Lifeshape Clinic will tailor a program to your needs.

WHICH INJECTABLE CLINIC?

WORKPLACE WELLBEING

GET FIT FAST

HAVE YOU BEEN contemplating having a cosmetic injectable treatment to kickstart the new year? There are three main points to consider when finding a reputable injecting clinic: • Look for qualified and experienced registered nurses supported by a prescribing doctor. The cosmetic injector must be fully-trained in a range of procedures to deliver the best results. • All anti-wrinkle and filler products should be of a premium quality. The products should not be diluted and the maximum dosage needs to be injected for a long-lasting effect. • Ensure you are getting value in what you are paying for in service and product selection. Skin Savers Beauty has partnered with pharmacies such as Malouf Group to add value to a trusted profession. Visit in-store today for a tailored individual treatment plan that will help you achieve your desired results and enhance your natural beauty. Our registered nurses would love to get the relationship started today, so make your booking for a free consultation in our private clinic.

WORKPLACES FOCUS ON productivity. Employers and managers keep costs at a minimum as a way of improving the financial bottom line. Sadly, this can mean they fail to focus on employee satisfaction and wellness. There are, however, some quality employers and smart leaders who know that providing excellent leadership, a psychologically safe work environment, targeted employee benefits, and staff wellbeing programs will significantly increase productivity, engagement, creativity, and capability. If employers and leaders structure workplace systems in psychologically-minded ways, staff will be happier and more industrious. All it takes is some thought and few strategic resources. Likewise, as an employee, you have a responsibility to arrive fit for work, and engage in tasks to meet expectations. This means having a balanced, flourishing life that enables you to be a productive worker. When employers and employees take shared responsibility for productivity and wellbeing, great things happen.

I AM OFTEN asked questions like “How long does it take to get fit?” or “How long does it take to lose a beer gut?” Everyone’s journey is different, but here are four tips that could help you achieve greater success: • There’s never a perfect moment to do something; you have to create that time for yourself. There will always be a more fun and comfortable alternative to that fear of failure. • Visualise your goals. Each time you hear that voice of doubt in your mind, try to picture yourself as you want to be – fitter and healthier. Block out that voice with the sound of your own heartbeat. Remember what you are fighting for: a better you. • If you want to get fit fast, a small change can make a big difference. Go for a 10-minute walk after work or do some quick push-ups before your morning coffee. • Don’t give up. Remember, the only person standing between you and your most fit self is you. Know what you want, and decide whether you’ll wish for it or work at it.

ART FOR AMATEURS How do you start an art collection? James Bolton from Jan Murphy Gallery shares a few important tips with Hannah Doody. What’s the first step for beginners who are looking to invest in art? Do your research. Look at as much art as you can, visit galleries and get to know who is making what and why they’re driven to do so. Find out what really grabs you. Establishing your budget will also really dictate how you can start your collection. As a general rule, is it better to invest in pieces by emerging, established or completely unknown artists? Generally, established artists will be out of budget for someone looking to start collecting. Finding new or emerging artists who excite or spark interest is a

‘The ups’, Lara Merrett 2016, acrylic and ink on linen, courtesy of Jan Murphy Gallery

great starting point. Look out for artists who have shown to be building a good exhibition history, and inclusion in prizes and sometimes grants and residencies. Works on paper are generally reasonably-priced and are a great starting point for a collection. Would you recommend buying for enjoyment over trying to make a smart investment? Definitely. Only ever buy what you like. How do you know when something is going to increase in value? Look for artists who have gained representation by reputable galleries, been included in exhibitions at galleries and museums

and have been included in or are winning prizes, residencies, grants and commissions. What are some common mistakes people make when buying art? Expecting a return on their investment within 10 to 12 years. It takes time or it never happens at all, which is exactly why you should only ever buy what you like. Instead of buying many small pieces, buy one significant work and a couple of smaller pieces. Any other tips for beginners? Sign up to mailing lists, read, go to galleries and meet the staff and find out about the artists they exhibit and learn as much as you can.

TRAVEL ISLAND ESCAPE Living in Brisbane, we are so lucky to have plenty of island getaways close to home for a weekend trip. Put down your phone, pack up the car and escape reality, writes Kiri Johnston. Tangalooma Island Resort

NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND Fondly known as Straddie, this popular island getaway has something for everyone. Once you hop off the ferry, pay a visit to Amity Point for some fresh, local seafood to start off your trip. Point Lookout is the best place to stay for families with kids, and there’s plenty to do, from hanging out at Cylinder Beach and going for a hike along the Gorge Walk to beating the heat with some gelato. Finish your day with sunset views and dinner at the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel. PEEL ISLAND If you’re wanting to visit one of Moreton Bay’s best-kept secrets, you’d better start buddying up to your friends who own a boat or a kayak because that’s the only way to access this exclusive spot. Peel Island is great for a day trip; just anchor at Horseshoe Bay and enjoy a day of swimming in the crystal-clear ocean. Camping facilities are available but there’s no water so make sure you pack a cooler full of food and drinks. 50

MORETON ISLAND It takes just over an hour to get to this beautiful, seemingly untouched island. But once you’re there, the relaxed vibe makes it feel like you’re in a different world. Forget shoes: your swimmers and a sense of adventure is pretty much all you need! Visit the lighthouse at Cape Moreton for some whale watching, feed the dolphins at Tangalooma or swim in the freshwater lakes at Blue Lagoon. You can also go tobogganing down the sand dunes and snorkelling at the wrecks – the possibilities are endless. DOUBLE ISLAND POINT With ferries going across the Noosa River every 10 minutes, you’ll be at Double Island Point in no time. The 4WD-only policy means there’s a good chance you’ll have the beach to yourself! It’s perfect for campers, fishermen and surfers. Keep an eye out for the Coloured Sands along the magnificent sandy cliff faces.

These amazing destinations are right in Brisbane’s backyard BRIBIE ISLAND You won’t have to fuss about with ferry trips; Bribie is connected to the mainland by bridge. Round up your pooch for a fun day at Red Beach’s off-leash dog area, or visit one of the many other beaches with the family. And why not visit the bowls club for a great pub feed and a game of lawn bowls? COOCHIEMUDLO ISLAND Just a quick ferry trip from Victoria Point, this small island is wrapped in sandy beaches. This is a great place to go for a stroll and unwind, especially since the island is only five square kilometres in size. READ MORE ONLINE
