orking on a magazine has its perks, but it will come as no surprise that our team sometimes find it hard to live in the moment, always looking ahead for the next big thing. This year at Style HQ we set ourselves a goal to stay present and explore more. We decided to start things off by rediscovering a favourite country spot close-to-home, Spicers Hidden Vale. Our cover collaboration saw five Style girls whisked away on an adventure of a lifetime with Brisbane City Land Rover, wearing an enviable wardrobe courtesy of The Myer Centre. Also in this month’s edition, we chat to a few of Brisbane’s favourite locals (pg. 14) as they reflect on the best of 2017. Plus, to help you kickstart your year we are showcasing the best of Brisbane, from fine dining to home styling, which you will find in our 2018 A to Z Style Guide (pg. 28). Enjoy!

n late November, Amazon launched its online retail service in Australia, much to the delight of online shoppers everywhere. or more than a decade Gail Sorronda has been a name synonymous with dark, innovative, and inspired designs. After launching her eponymous label in 2005, Gail then pushed herself to open her flagship boutique, Gail Sorronda, in Brisbane’s illustrious James Street precinct. Now, working alongside her partner Atlas Hardwood, Gail is gripping the international fashion community. How did you and Atlas realise that you had complementary skills? It has been a bit of trial and error and it is something we work on ongoing. Atlas is glass half empty and I’m glass half full so we balance each other out! What has been one of the most rewarding aspects of working together? Learning and growing together has been character building. Since launching in 2005 at Australian Fashion Week, what has been one of the greatest challenges you have been faced with? My own personal fears! Each collection is an exhale until the next wave. With your flagship boutique on James St, a thriving social media presence, and creating new collections, what has been the greatest challenge working across all aspects of the business? Time management and maintaining a balanced lifestyle! What is the most satisfying part of the work you do? Creating, storytelling and learning. What are you looking forward to achieving with the Gail Sorronda brand in the coming years? Evolving as a designer, and refining my skills and communication so I can better share it. For fashion designers who are thinking of launching their own boutique, what advice do you have for them? Resilience beats resistance. Try to be as involved as possible, as you learn so much more by being hands on and present. JANUARY 2018

t a time when many businesses are closing their doors or downsizing their services, Christine Curro’s boutiques are thriving, with the launch of her second store earlier this year. Having started her own business and working as the sole employee, White Bungalow and its sister store White Havana now employ more than 15 team members and offer a wide range of chic homeware goods, styling services, workshops, and even a florist. When you first launched White Bungalow, what were some of the biggest challenges? Probably adapting to social media marketing. I didn’t have an Instagram account until I opened my business and I have to say it has definitely played an important role in our success! Given our location, it was always planned that our store would become a “destination” store. The use of social media tools allowed us to reach people that might never have heard about us. Now overseeing two stores, how has your role changed? I now have a much larger team including strong management to help with the day-to-day running of the stores, which allows me to focus on buying, styling, merchandising and managing my business. For business owners who are just starting out, what advice do you have for them? I think it is so important to have a really clear vision of what it is you want your business to be. I know business plans can be boring, but they really can be such a valuable STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

aunching her successful jewellery business, Molten Store, at 23 years old, Jessy challenges the stereotype of how a business begins and flourishes. Her strength is her ability to captivate her audience and create an experience that is more than just purchasing a piece of jewellery.
When you first launched your company, what were some of the biggest challenges? Access to capital was a challenge so I started Molten Store with my personal savings and I’ve grown the business out of our revenue year on year with no external investment. How have you integrated digital marketing into your business plan? Our digital marketing channels enable us to showcase the physical manifestation of our brand in the online realm. We’ve started hosting regular interviews with creative women we admire and live stream them across our Instagram stories. We’ve found our niche as a brand that celebrates sisterhood. We’re a popular destination for women of all age groups, and our products are personal totems of self-expression, so we use digital marketing to amplify inspiring women in our community. For business owners starting out, what advice do you have for them? Don’t let perfect get in the way of better. Just begin and do the best you can with what you have – you’ll have to reinvent your business over and over again anyway!
CHRISTINE CURRO tool in making sure you have a clear picture of the direction of your business. And probably the most crucial advice I have is not to worry about what other people in your industry are doing. If you spend all your time worrying about competitors you will always be living in the shadows of other people’s success. Be your own biggest fan and the rest will follow! PAGE 13

What is the best thing that happened to you last year? The best thing that happened to me last year was becoming successful as a self-made businesswoman who is able to fuse everything I love into one. I also think making the transition from being a professional dancer into Method X has been incredible; I feel so happy with every aspect of my life.”

A peek at event styling trends in 2018
Have we been Trumped?
Slide into summer in style
With the arrival of the new year, it’s time to start thinking about what summer styling trends you’ll be heating up your next event with. Summer is all about relaxed holidays, fun in the sun and afternoon cocktails with friends. What better way to bring in summer elements for your next event than mixing Hampton’s style with modern tropical? Think white cane furniture with fun geometric prints and lots of lush tropical greenery. Want to take your tropical vibes to the next level? Choose a bright pop of colour to steal the show paired with natural elements such as coral, exposed timber tabletops and quirky botanicals to bring it all together. It’s important not to overcrowd – less is more! If you’d rather be enjoying drinks with friends without the stress of styling the perfect summer vibes event, enlisting the help of a stylist can ensure your summer soiree is on trend every time.
Third wave coffee is a global phenomenon. This movement focuses on producing high-quality coffee, and considers coffee an artisanal foodstuff, like wine, rather than a commodity. During my recent trip to the United States, I was intrigued by the residents’ increasing interest in the third wave coffee scene. Big jumps can be seen from Folgers to Starbucks, with most of the population still indulging in their supersized syruped mochaccinos. However, if one digs a little deeper you can truly engage in the specialty coffee scene. American pioneers such as Intelligentsia and Ritual Coffee Roasters truly led the way, but now in every state the shelves at specialty cafés are overrun with beautifully designed bags of single-origin and blended beans from small-batch roasters. One could say the USA is still playing catch up to our awesome specialty coffee scene Down Under. Proud to be an Aussie!
When it comes to exuding cool, casual confidence this summer, loafers are the shoes you should be wearing to every occasion. From rooftop parties to outdoor events, maintain the balance between style and comfort and give your wardrobe a well-deserved refresh. Pairing your chinos or linen shorts with a pair of suede loafers will embody everything daytime chic, and screams sunny summer weekends with a beer in hand. Although commonly viewed as a more casual shoe, the loafer (chosen correctly) can be worn with formal attire too. Find a high gloss, sleek leather pair to wear at your more formal occasions. The long debate over socks or no socks is still ongoing. However wearing loafers sans socks is heavily on-trend this season and paired with chinos, it’s definitely a statement look. Whatever your plans this summer, you can’t go wrong with a pair of loafers.

January always sparks our desire to reflect on the year that was and inspires endless possibilities for adventure in the year ahead. This month, Brisbane City Land Rover collaborated with The Myer Centre to send five Style girls on a road trip to explore Queensland’s best-kept secret, Spicers Hidden Vale. The girls took to the road in the allnew Range Rover Velar and the ever-popular Evoque Convertable. Arriving at the crack of dawn they were greeted by the rising sun and the wild wallabies that call Spicers home. With breathtaking countryside views and an enviable wardrobe courtesy of The Myer Centre, the girls explored the grounds to take in the exquisite landscape in all of its spectacular glory. After being treated to a taste of the seasonal Spicers menu, they are already planning their return for the Flavours of Summer Gourmet Festival later this month.

New Year NEW EYES The eyes have it. Follow these essential habits recommended by Madonna Rigney Optometry. • Avoid rubbing your eyes. The hands are exposed to a lot of dirt, dust and bacteria, and all of these can be easily transferred to your peepers each time you touch or rub them. • Protect your eyes from the sun. Turns out there’s more to wearing sunglasses than making a fashion statement. • Stay hydrated. If you are well hydrated, you prevent your eyes from getting dry and irritated. • Put down the smokes. Smoking also makes you more susceptible to age-related macular degeneration and other conditions such as cataracts.

If you’re looking for a hearty home cooked meal, the SMC Porchetta is it. Rolled pork belly stuffed with provolone cheese, herbs, garlic and Italian porcini mushroom served with roasted potato cooked for 14 hours in the finest of flavours. The Risotto Al Funghi Con Scaglie Di Pecorino was addictive and soothed the soul. The hefty portion could’ve easily fed an Italian family, but I wasn’t sharing. After the overindulgence of the main event, and even though the thought of dessert made me want to roll off my chair, I couldn’t go past the mouth-watering vanilla pannacotta with mixed berry sauce. alt Meats Cheese is the perfect antidote to a steamy Brisbane summer, combining passion and fine food. The new casual Italian eatery has made its home in the heart of Newstead, opposite Gasworks, and is ready to take you on the food journey of a lifetime. The family-owned restaurant oozes passion and flavour with an incredible outdoor space, in addition to the beautiful indoor restaurant, cocktail bar and pizza bar. The interior has a chic modern feel complemented by leafy green surroundings, mosaic finishes and bustling table service. The bar is such a visual focal point, with bottles of Italian wine and Aperol just waiting to be snapped for your next Instagram post. A carefully curated selection of the best imported and local products truly gives your meal an element of authenticity. We started with entrées of fried prawns and calamari with fresh chilli, shallots & lime mayo and Gnocco Fritto with wild rocket, parma prosciutto and stracchino cheese. The prawns and calamari were moreish to say the least; incredibly light and crispy with the perfect amount of chilli, suitable

From the school run to the shopping centre, brunch with the STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
girls in Ascot or a dinner date in Fish Lane; Euro Black Plates simply stand out. Already the epitome of suave, PPQ have taken the plate game up a notch and included a crest to mark each plate in the Euro range.
“The epitome of suave”
A Southern Cross image adorns each plate to celebrate home and is combined with the distinguished “Salvat Itiner” crest. For those who haven’t extensively studied Latin phrases (à la all of us), this translates in English to
“safe journey”. The stunning classic colour and crest combination emulates the kind of internationally inspired flair that French dreams are made of. The allure of personalised plates lies in the individuality injected into each one. Euro Black Plates are not only timeless, but the classic monochrome palette matches any colour, meaning your plates will last through the years with you, even if you upgrade your car. Featuring a fixed Q, two letters, two numbers, and a fixed X or Y, Euro Black Plates are available in the classic Euro plate size, or sleek slimline. Modern dining and locally sourced produce meet traditional Japanese cooking techniques. At Saké, the fusion is explosive. Amidst a buzz of trending techniques and experimental degustation, the art of fine dining has Brisbane in its grips. Eagle Street’s Saké Restaurant & Bar leads the pack thanks to the creativity of Executive Chef Shaun Presland and Head Chef Daisuke Sakai. Combining traditional Japanese cooking methods with contemporary cuisine, Saké Restaurant & Bar is a riverside experience not to be missed. Starting his career in the kitchens of fine dining restaurants in Osaka before moving on to the Ritz Carlton, Chef Sakai has been designing and executing world-class menus for the better part of the last decade. After making the move across the pond, Saké Restaurant & Bar has been lucky enough to benefit from his PAGE 30
culinary wisdom and expertise since 2014. Chef Sakai’s drive for perfection and exploration is infused into every bite and his passion for local cuisine has transformed the Saké menu into something every Brisbanite can be proud of. “With Australia being one of the best places to get fresh vegetables, seafood and meat we source all of these items from producers all over the country,” he said. From the Harvey Bay scallops to the miso reduction it’s paired with, the menu tells a love story between modern Australian produce and timelessly classic Japanese cooking methods. The mind-bending saké list is the perfect complement to the menu and is definitely worth exploring your way through. If that isn’t

enough to tempt you to wet your whistle, the cocktail list is dizzyingly delicious. On the surface, the interiors are contemporary, yet inspired by tradition. Training
Gone are the days of slogging it out in the gym on your own. The cool kids on the block are changing the way we move. There’s no denying that fitness crazes come and go, but we’re happy to report that F45 is here to stay. You can make yourself a brand new workout playlist, treat yourself to Lululemon tights or flash new Nikes, but no matter how you sugar coat it, we bet your 2-year-old gym membership will still bore you to death. Forget the fitness ruts of yesteryear and put your trust in the phenomenal Nina Studenko and Drew Woodhouse. This Brisbane-based power-couple are the best in the business when it comes to health, and are primed and ready to take on all the new challenges this year has to offer at their three studios in Newstead, Stafford and West End. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
Nina and Drew conquered mountains in 2017, taking over the West End studio midway through the year, making them the leading franchisees in the River City. “I thrive on helping others achieve their goals and become the best version of themselves. In our West End studio, clients are personally supported through each workout they undertake by owner/operator Kat Taylor and our team of dedicated coaches,” Nina says. F45 is a far cry from the soulless muscle machine factories you may be used to. It’s the fusion of different training styles, variation in the workouts, the motivation that comes with group sessions and personal trainers that’s convincing even the laziest of couch
potatoes to get themselves motivated. F45 is comprised of 3,000 different exercises targeting all muscle groups, expertly compiled into 27 different workouts, guaranteeing you’ll never do the same workout twice. It’s true what they say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. The variety of F45 training, coupled with Nina and Drew’s professionalism will keep you challenged and have you busting out of your fitness rut for good. Afterall, if it’s good enough for Hugh Jackman, you can bet your gluteus maximus it’s good enough for us too. NEWSTEAD, STAFFORD & WEST END F45TRAINING.COM.AU/WESTEND

You only have one chance to make a first impression. With exactly seven seconds up your sleeve, every detail counts. In an age where striving for success means looking the part, faking it will only get you so far. The Executive Stylist, Elle Lavon, has been suiting up Brisbane’s top movers and shakers for over a decade. One of Australia’s only exclusively male stylists, to say Elle’s expertise in high-end menswear is highly sought after would be an understatement. Dressing businessmen and entrepreneurs is something no one does quite like Elle. With a no bull attitude and an eye for the creative, cultivating daring, bold and wearable style profiles for her clients is what Elle does best. “In today’s world, achieving your goals means you have to create a consistently memorable impression everywhere you go. If you neglect your image, you will get left behind” she says. Elle takes into consideration everything from an individual’s physical attributes such as body type and colouring, different aspects of their personality and lifestyle and of course their personal and professional goals. Crafting authentic style, rather than “fashion” dressing is Elle’s focus, and it’s why her voice remains a resoundingly clear influence in the industry. Achieving authentic style is all about using clothing as a tool of empowerment – achieving complete congruence between who you are and the way you look. “When you become unapologetically authentic and honest with yourself, you become naturally magnetic and inspiring to others. Taking pride and investing in their style is a great way for men to get behind the driver’s seat and set the pace of their own success,” she says. As Brisbane enters an age ruled by self-made trailblazers, it’s Elle you can find behind the scenes transforming boardroom-bound gents into the ambitious, confident men who are taking the world by storm one well-tailored blazer at a time. DRIVING MACHINE
What we drive is more than just something to get us from here to there. It’s a representation of who we are.
When you think about it, we spend quite a large fraction of our lives in our vehicles. To work, from work, across town, across the country; and everything in between. We trust that they will transport us and our loved ones safely from A to B. It makes sense then, that when it comes to selecting a new car, we want to ensure that we’ve got the ultimate driving machine. A veteran of the automotive industry, BMW, is just that. With a rich history as one of the most admired and trusted car manufacturing companies in the world, few brands come close to matching the ethos of the German retailer. With a lineup of impressive vehicles, spanning from hybrid, fuel-efficient vehicles to off-road, high-performance SUV’s. Oozing luxury and style at every touch point, with no detail spared, each vehicle has its own
individual features, while still remaining true to the BMW brand. Take the all-new BMW X3 for example. Full of possibilities, she is the leader in her class and equipped to go anywhere you wish, and do it in style, redefining the benchmark for midsize SUV’s. Versatile on and off road, it’s the vehicle for every occasion. If being ahead of the game is your thing, get ready to make an impression when the first-ever BMW X2 hits the road in March 2018. With a bold athleticism and agile performance that is unmatched in its class, the BMW X2 is instantly recognisable as a BMW. Whether you’re ducking to the shops, or ducking down to Byron for a day trip, make your move in the ultimate driving machine.

A new year is the perfect time to refresh your home, redecorate a room, or replace tired, shabby furniture. Worth a trip down the M1 to the Gold Coast, Biku Furniture is an impressive furniture and homewares destination; a store large enough to offer a vast range of products to choose from, yet still has a boutique feel. That’s because the owners source their collections globally, hand selecting many products exclusively for Biku. Biku also specialise in interior design and commercial fit-outs including resorts and hotels, recently working with Jamala Wildlife Lodge. This makes sense as the Biku aesthetic encompasses many natural elements. Beat the heat this summer
They tried to make me go to rehab…
Will I get spider veins?
The Australian summer has a tendency to dehydrate your body, and on your skin, this may manifest as dryness, loss of elasticity, and a sallow complexion. To keep your skin looking fresh drink lots of fluid, pick a moisturiser suitable for your skin type, and apply it regularly. The harmful effects of the sun in terms of increasing the risk of skin cancers and progressing the signs of ageing cannot be overstated. Pick a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen, suited to your skin type and lifestyle, and apply daily. Try to get your eight hours sleep a night to let your body and skin replenish and regenerate. Fuel your body with a balanced, nutritious diet, and take a good dose of multivitamins. In the heat, keeping cool is also vital, especially for those with sensitive skin conditions such as rosacea. Try to stick to the shade where possible.
Eyebrows create or suppress expression and a person’s point of view. The hair growth itself plays a very important part in what the eyebrows whisper to us about someone’s personality and nature. Natural brow growth is super important. Some untrained therapists will pluck or wax too wide in between brows because they are unsure of how to tame natural brow fans. Your natural fan style fronts need to remain to give youthfulness to your face. They also symbolise the head and heart connection. If you’ve been over-waxed and your natural brow fans have been compromised, a Brow Growth Plan from the Arch Angels can help you recover over three visits. You should never take to your own brows with a pair of tweezers, but if you are a repeat offender perhaps the time has come to check your scrawny brows into the Brow Rehab Program.
There are many factors that predispose a person to varicose veins and spider veins, and it’s not just genetics. Varicose and spider veins are seen more often in women than in men. Some of the more common factors that induce varicose veins include: Weight Gain: Excess weight and obesity can put extra pressure on your veins which may lead to varicose veins. Hormones: During puberty, pregnancy, and menopause women often develop varicose veins due to changes in the production of progesterone and other key hormones. Immobility: Sitting or standing for a long time may force your veins to work harder to pump blood to your heart. This can be a bigger problem if you sit with your legs bent or crossed. Age: Often the older you are the more common the condition, as over time the valves in your veins may weaken.

Nailing loose waves at home
Energetic entrepreneurship
Gum disease & throat cancer
One of the most common questions we get asked is how to perfect those lush loose waves at home using a hair straightener. We’ve put it into six easy steps for you. • Start by applying a heat protectant spray to your hair. • Section off your hair into two sides then take the side you’re working on and divide it into top and bottom. • Close down and start turning the straightener away from the face. • After you’ve flipped the straightener put the longer end of the hair over the straightener and hold on to it as you run the straightener through your hair like you normally would. • Don’t run your fingers or brush through the curls until they have cooled down. This will help them stay in longer. • Repeat the process on the opposite side. Pro Tip: for beach waves run straightener through the ends of the hair only.
New ideas and ventures are rarely successful immediately. Creating a business from the ground up requires boundless energy, motivation, and the ability to bounce back from mistakes. Be ready to do the heavy lifting, as there are seldom shortcuts. To make the leap between startup and success you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Persist through the tough times knowing most give up because they don’t realise the sacrifices involved. Accept things out of your control and develop mastery over unproductive emotions. Focus on goals, be organised, have a fighting spirit, and be okay with the many failures that come. We all have 24 hours a day, and what you do with it defines you. Treat everyone with respect not because it’s good for business, but it’s the right thing to do. As my Dad says: With time and patience you can achieve anything.
Recent research unveiled by the American Association for Cancer Research has found a strong association between certain types of bacteria found in gum disease and the incidence of throat cancer. Throat cancer is often not detected until it is quite advanced and consequently has a very low survival rate of less than 25 per cent over five years. The mildest form of gum disease is called gingivitis. It is 100 per cent reversible and 100 per cent preventable. The earliest sign may be spitting out some blood-stained froth after brushing. If this early sign is ignored that mild form of gum disease can progress to a more destructive form of gum disease. Regular dental health examinations and preventive care appointments are essential in the prevention and treatment of gingivitis and periodontal disease. The mouth truly is the gateway to your overall health. Don’t let it create havoc in the rest of your body.

Finding Your Balance in the New Year One size does not fit all, when it comes to weight loss. Research shows that being overweight has similar health risks to being a long-term smoker – which can reduce your lifespan by up to 8-10 years. The new year often brings with it resolutions to lose weight and a menagerie of fad diets. CEO and Founder of LifeShape Clinic, Neil Holt, is aiming to break the cycle of crash dieting and help people create healthy habits. “Losing weight isn’t just about the numbers,” Neil says. “Our professional team of doctors, dietitians, exercise physiologists and psychologists work together to help each client complete their weight loss puzzle. As a result, 75 per cent of clients maintain their weight loss when following a support program.” With such great results, Neil and the team are continuing to improve their service

GETTING THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BLOW DRY BUCK:
• Ask your stylist for a deep cleansing shampoo and ask that they not use any products in your hair if possible. • Wear a shower cap (yes, we know it sounds daggy but you can get cute turban caps now). • Sleep on silk pillow cases and/ or wrap your hair in a silk scarf. • Make friends with dry shampoo and use it for a quick refresh.

LASHES THAT KEEP ON KEEPING ON:
• Clean your lash extensions. Yes, this sounds a bit odd, but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Eyeshadow particles and normal dust can weigh your lashes down, causing them to droop or fall out. Treat them with a little TLC and they’ll last longer. Way To Wellness This could easily be your best year yet says Courtney Frank. If you do nothing else this year, follow these three steps to help you live your best year yet.
Reflect on the year that’s passed We’re always on the go. Life is busy, right? Finding a quiet moment of self-reflection in a world full of craziness is important. What did you learn? What would you do differently? Not only will this process be therapeutic, but it will also allow you to let go of the past and completely focus on the year ahead.

Chill the heck out
Set goals & create a plan of action
Ever floated in darkness for an hour? I have and it was the most relaxed I’ve ever been. If you’re trying to work out what I mean, let me make it easy for you: float therapy. If 2017 was the year to try new things, 2018 is the year to chill the heck out. Taking care of your mind, body and soul is paramount, and at Bliss Float Brisbane, you can achieve the trifecta in one simple float session. You’ll feel like you’re floating on cloud nine when you walk out.
“When I achieve my goals, I’ll finally be happy.” I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that you’ve either said or heard that phrase in one form or another. It’s important to set goals so that you have something to work towards, but if you think you’ll instantly become happier once you reach said goals, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. In order to have the best year yet, set small attainable goals so you can celebrate the little wins more frequently.
