JANUARY 2019

EDITOR’S NOTE Hello and happy new year! Here at Style we’re refreshed, pumped and ready to take on 2019. Okay, that’s crap, we’d rather still be sipping cocktails and lazing at the beach ... But if there’s one thing that is motivating us, it’s the courageous and fierce women featured in this month’s Fierce Issue (pg 8). As far as cover shoots go, this one (of women’s rugby league player Ali Brigginshaw and her partner Kate), is right up there as one of my favourites. I love league and I’m in awe of female league players so it was incredible to meet Ali and hear about her rise to the top of her game. If you wanna talk about girl power, Ali is the epitome of fierce, yet is a quietly spoken and humble human being. (In saying that, I do NOT want her tackling me though!) How fabulous do Ali and Kate look?! We dressed them in The Aurum Collective tuxedo suits - yet another local designer that we’re loving. This issue also features our annual A-to-Z Style Guide for 2019, showcasing some of Brisbane’s best stores, services and businesses. There were so many fabulous additions to Brissy’s vibrant culture during 2018, and we can’t wait to see what 2019 brings. Wishing you a happy, creative and successful new year. Go get ‘em, tiger!

ALI BRIGGINSHAW & KATE DALY

QUICK CHAT We talk to Style’s co-founder, Tracy Sinclair, about being fierce.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLETRACY

Would you describe yourself as being fierce? I don’t know that I would call myself fierce, but I’m not a walk over and not much intimidates me, so in that respect, I won’t shy away from a challenge. Tell us about a time that you had to be fierce A couple of sticky situations back-packing through Portugal and Israel (which, by the way, is one of my fave countries). My girlfriends and I were at potential risk of physical harm. Being Kiwis we summoned up a haka-like attack and got through it. Businesswise, taking the leap to start Style with two kids under three, and having more ‘front than a rat with a gold tooth’ when in fact, I was actually shitting myself.

What’s your idea of ‘fierce’? I admire anyone who overcomes adversity or backs themselves. Fierce describes anyone who tries, fails, tries again, gets hit and gets up again. You know ... Rocky-style! How do you instil fierceness in others? I like to encourage confidence rather than fierceness. I’ll always try to pump someone up when I feel they can (or even if they can’t) do something. Humans are all the same deep down, so I often say “what’s the worst that could happen? Give it a crack.” I like the big pep talks. I’m also a fan of “you are entirely up to you”, in that you make your own success. Oh and, don’t make excuses - ain’t nobody got time for that.

Fearless FEMALES We talk to three women who epitomise what it means to be fierce, pushing themselves despite the hurdles life throws at them. li Brigginshaw is a self-confessed tomboy, natural-born athlete, and highly competitive woman. Growing up in Ipswich watching her father and older brother play rugby league, Ali vowed not only to be just like the boys, but be better than them. Playing throughout school and copping a bit of slack here and there, Ali was never really phased, always seeing it as something to keep her pushing to be better. “I’ve always had a competitive side to me and I think that stands out today.” While she’s always been a well-known name in NRL circles, Ali catapulted to fame with a front page photo of her kissing her partner Kate after winning the women’s NRL grand final captaining the Brisbane Broncos side. At the end of the game, she did something every other NRL player does. Ali went up to her family and thanked them for supporting her, kissing her partner Kate. But the loving gesture soon went viral, covering the front page of newspapers and swarming social media feeds. Today, Ali isn’t bothered by the occasional remarks she gets about her relationship. She’s proud to have her by her side, saying the positive messages outweigh the online trolls. “People say ‘what a beautiful couple’ now rather than ‘those disgusting girls.’” Despite continually having her career and relationship in the spotlight, Ali admits her biggest struggle has been finding the courage to unapologetically be herself. While she’s seen to be aggressive and powerful on the field, Ali can be completely the opposite in day-to-day life. “There are some things where I’m very strong and comfortable, and then there’s some where I’m really vulnerable.” Some words of advice from a friend helped her to step outside her comfort zone and make the most of every opportunity life throws at her. “Someone once told me that you should never stand in the corner of the room; you should always be in the middle, so two years ago I decided to start putting myself out there.” She hopes by continuing to be herself and succeed in her career, she can inspire a generation of young women to unapologetically be themselves. ith fitness always a priority in her life, Jacqui Bell has continually pushed herself to the limit in order to seek results. After continuously working long hours in the gym, she began to loathe her training, deciding to take her fitness outdoors. Struggling with mental health throughout her life, Jacqui found that the endorphins she gained through running helped lift her mood and change her mindset – allowing her to banish negative thoughts and take on whatever life was throwing at her. “I found trail running and being outside clears my mind and I am addicted to the post run endorphins - they make me feel like a new person.” After hitting rock bottom, Jacqui began to really focus on her training, deciding to push her body further to compete in long distance races. This helped her to start to make big PAGE 10

changes to her life, as she so desperately wanted to get the most out of every moment. Jacqui then decided to take her running to the next level, vowing to compete in the Big Red run in Queensland. Upon planning for this, she discovered 4 Deserts, one of the

“I thought, ‘If I can do

this and achieve it, I’ll know I’LL BE CAPABLE OF ANYTHING.” toughest endurance challenges in the world. “I thought, ‘If I can do this and achieve it, I’ll know I’ll be capable of anything.” The 4 Deserts ultramarathon is a brutal outdoor footrace set across the world, forcing runners to complete a series of treks. The

Sahara Race spreads across Egypt, Jordan and Namibia, the Gobi March covers China and Mongolia, the Atacama Crossing makes its way through Chile, and The Last Desert goes through Antarctica. Each leg covers 250km, and must be completed in just seven days. Competitors must fend for themselves throughout the entire course, only being provided with a tent and water. After setting her sights on this grueling race, Jacqui completed the race at the end of 2018, and has now become the youngest woman in the world to complete the race dubbed “the world’s toughest ultramarathon.” “I wanted to achieve this, but also needed this huge undertaking to get my life on track – this experience has definitely given me a new perspective.” Along the way, Jacqui has raised almost $17,000 for the White Cloud Foundation. As their newest Ambassador, she hope to inspire others and keep making a difference. JANUARY 2019

mma Carey has one of those ‘that can’t happen’ stories. Nicknamed ‘the girl who fell from the sky’ her journey has been one of pain and true determination. In a freak accident five years ago, Emma was involved in a sky diving incident, causing her to be paralysed from the waist down. Through months and months of rehabilitation, Emma eventually learnt how to be herself again, though still had to make massive life changes to her day to day life. She continually pushed herself to her limits, gaining back all the things she thought she lost in order to go about her day almost like normal. When meeting Emma, there’s no way you’d ever think she’d been through the rollercoaster journey of learning to walk again. As a humble and happy young woman with a zest for life, she exudes positive vibes, and when Style Editor Tracy Sinclair spent a day with her at a Self Love Festival, she couldn’t help but be captivated by her infectious personality. Emma certainly fits the description of ‘fearless’ and admits her accident has helped her to embody this, and continue to live her life to the fullest every day. “For me, being fearless is having trust and faith in yourself to know that you can get through anything.” She hopes by sharing her story, she can help others to understand that it’s STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

okay to hit rock bottom, and it’s okay to feel hopeless, because she too thought it would be impossible to get through. “If someone told me about the accident before it happened, I would have told them that there is no way I could get through that.” While life can be messy and it can be hard to push through, Emma is adamant there’s nothing you can’t pull through. “No matter what life throws at you, you’ll be okay.”

Start your new year with a fresh mind and new goals with Grace and Grind.

W

hile many of us have career hopes and dreams at a young age, it’s fairly common to end up in a career or lifestyle-rut that doesn’t fulfill us. Subsequently, we may crave a new adventure, new skills, or a new environment as we grow. Career and life coach Suzanne Williams knows the struggle well and spends her days helping others find a new direction in their life. Suzanne knows that every situation is different and tailors her service to each individual. What advice do you have for those who don’t know where to start? People often want to change industries and careers but don’t know where to begin. They worry it will mean starting from the bottom and aren’t sure what skills they have that are transferrable to other roles. Sometimes a fear of change can be due to investing heavily in a past career, so changing feels like a waste of past study and work – but this is not the case. For example, a lawyer, who even though despises their job, continues to work in the field as they’ve invested four years of study and many more years working in the field.

Up your GAME How would you guide those who no longer believe in what they do? It’s common to get to a point and realise that you’ve sacrificed life at the expense of work. Gaining more purpose in your work, feeling a sense of contributing to something bigger than yourself, and creating new priorities can help people gain some perspective. There comes a point where people realise that working excessively and slaving away at a job doesn’t necessarily offer fulfillment. How do you encourage people to take a step up in their career? Many lack confidence in their ability to do their job well, and often feel an overwhelming sense of self-doubt. In reality, most of this negative self-talk is built upon a rocky foundation and not even remotely true. The trick is using some well-established techniques to help people build their confidence, know their worth, and know the value they offer. Lucent Bottle Premium crystal infused water bottles by Emily George

Bake:Time Customised cake art by Telina Philben How long have you been running your business? Bake:Time has been around for years as I’ve always baked for friends and family. It wasn’t until May this year that I decided to put the time in and properly get my brand up and running. How did you get your brand up and running? I’m also a Graphic Designer, so creating a brand was the easy part. After creating a logo and business cards I then made sure my social media content looked fresh and was always up to date with treats I had been baking. From there I slowly started building followers and with that came clientele and the word soon spread. What future plans do you have for your brand? Continue to grow clientele and maybe one day have a pop up store in Brisbane.

Pixie Dust Calligraphy Handwritten modern calligraphy, brush lettering, and workshops by Charlotte Chan Who gave you the idea to start your business? One of my girlfriends! I learned calligraphy specifically to do my own wedding stationery, but I ended up getting married overseas. Since then I’ve been putting my calligraphy videos on Instagram, and then one day my friend asked if I’d teach people, so I set up my very first workshop. What do you love most about running your business? I receive such lovely inquiries from all over the world! The furthest I have sent my agates place cards for a wedding was to Austria! It’s always such a wonderful treat to see my work published, whether digitally, in print or in physical product (when The Daily Edited approached me to print my calligraphy script onto their personalised items). Some tips for up-and-coming business owners or people who want to start up a label/brand? Just do it - don’t be intimidated. If you don’t at ask the question, there is no way you can know if somebody might say yes.

Who/what gave you the idea to start your business? I actually just started by looking at untapped niches in Australia and I saw that crystal infused water bottles were very popular overseas but there was a lack of suppliers in Australia so I decided to run with it. What did you do before starting up your brand? I have dabbled in everything online from fashion blogging, freelance web design, social media management, affiliate marketing and drop shipping, but found my true passion in e-commerce. Whilst trying all these fields I have been completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Business at QUT and also working in Real Estate. What excites you the most about your business? I think more and more people are beginning to realise the benefits of spiritual awareness in their daily lives - manifestation, meditation, crystals etc. It is so exciting that my business is able to provide beautiful products that people can enjoy on their journey. (through products, packaging, our team and community) means that we are proudly apart of the slow fashion movement. For us as brand, collections don’t exist because we believe that by providing staple styles that can transcend through time and season, for all genders is a product that can only get better over time. We want to step back from ‘trends’ to focus on quality over quantity by finding new ways to make each staple hat an even better design with a lower footprint, every, single, time. Will & Bear exists to inspire a life lived outdoors, but the great outdoors wouldn’t be much if we weren’t doing anything to improve the environment. And so from the very beginning, we partnered with Trees.org to plant 10 trees with every 1 hat sold and still do to this day. We are also currently working on our Keep It Slow range, a product line made from up-cycled materials…. Stay tuned!

Pla

What inspired you to start your label? After spending time in raw, wild nature we had tons of inspiration which birthed the concept of our brand. It also got us thinking about how we can give back to the land, not just Tasmania but in general. How long have you been running your label for? Three epic years full of adventure, travel, trial and error. An incredible ride so far and we hope for many more years of this journey to come. What is your brand philosophy/vision? We aim to inspire a life lived outdoors, deepen the connection to our environment and help create awareness of giving back to the places we explore. Who/what inspires your designs? When life’s on the road it’s so hard to ignore the beauty of your surroundings and in the people you meet. We aim to personify our hats as part of the australian landscape by mirroring the colours, textures and experiences we’ve had during our travels. We base the shape of each hat on traditional styles whilst standing for simplicity and yet still acknowledging what came before us. These factors help us to create functional, high-quality headwear and help us give back to the land. If so, how is your brand sustainable? How often do you release collections? We believe that quality and long-lasting go hand in hand so we focus a lot on that during design and production of each piece whilst keeping our footprint as minimal as possible. By using 100% natural fibres, personally visiting each factory we work with and constantly finding ways to improve our impact

A mixture of crisp and bitey parmesan pieces, prosciutto san daniele, capocollo, mortadella, spicy cacciatore, pancetta, marinated mixed olives and artichokes alla romana, it was a delightful mixture of flavours that was the perfect dish to satisfy hunger cravings before mains arrived. For mains we had to try a pizza and a pasta, because who really orders just one dish when they go to an Italian restaurant. The pizza we tried was the classic Margherita, which more than exceeded our expectations. With a rich, tomato base, dollops of melted bocconcini, a crispy crust and a sprinkle of basil, it was

everything our pizza dreams are made of. For pasta, we stepped outside of our comfort zone a little, ordering spaghetti ai gamberi. A scrumptiously salty dish infused with garlic and hits of chilli, the dish combined black squid ink spaghetti with juicy tiger prawns and blistered cherry tomatoes, topped with anchovy infused toasted breadcrumbs. While we were far too full to sample something from the dessert menu, we hear the pannacotta and tiramisu di casa are absolute crowd pleasers. If you ever find yourself craving a little slice of Italy, but can’t afford the plane ticket, stop in at Il Posto, the place to be. COFFEE MASTERCLASS with Penny Wolff

Planning your wardrobe

Making a new years resolution

The art of tasting coffee

Life is full and it can seem like every moment is taken up. On top of the priority list is family, work and so on, and your wardrobe is most likely a fair way down on the list. What most people don’t realise is that not making time to organise your wardrobe is actually costing them money and affecting efficacy. It’s important to start the year fresh, so spend January cleaning out and organising your wardrobe. If you haven’t worn an item for 12 months, it’s time for it to go, unless it’s a sentimental piece. Look for discoloured and frayed shirt collars and holey socks – these can be thrown out. Stained ties and damaged garments can go in for a good dry clean and some repair work, and tattered shoes can be re-soled and polished. It’s also important to ensure each garment fits properly. It’s amazing how much clarity you receive by reviewing and organising. It takes just an hour of your time with much greater return.

When making your new years resolutions, do you consider your relationship and the positive changes you could make to it? Put relationship coaching at the top of the to-do-list this year and get ahead of the curve. Most people want the best for themselves, and a healthy relationship should be no different. Investing in your relationship can have amazing outcomes. Seeking professional relationship coaching could improve your communication and support, help you gain a greater understanding, and increase intimacy. Make improving your relationship one resolution you want to keep this year. The benefits of coaching your relationship far outweigh the ‘wait and see’ approach. You will thank each other for the gift. Remember, the more you invest, the bigger the return. Get the best returns by being intentional in the most important relationship you have.

Peter Wolff started his coffee career in1984 while on a train ride home after derailing his university study. He had a clear picture of what he wanted to do, and now, 34 years later, he’s built a roasting business that has provided him with the opportunity to work alongside many coffee producing families, co-ops and communities. He has now created a unique forum to share his expertise, known as Coffee Tasting Sessions. These sessions give customers the opportunity to taste coffee and get a better understanding of the connection between the farmer, the roaster and the consumer. On the first Saturday each month, Peter provides a free Coffee Tasting Session from 9-10am to explore coffee varieties, and taste a varied selection of espresso and milk based coffees. This allows tasters to refine the flavours and understand their own coffee palate, plus walk away feeling caffeinated and educated by a master and veteran of his field.

What is your hair telling people?

Recognising your success

Positive pregnancy, positive parenting

Each one of us has a different personality, style profile, face shape, colour tone and profession. Asking for a new hairstyle to suit all of these is always going to be an experiment, unless your hairstylist understands how to create a look that directly reflects your personality. Naturally everyone’s taste is different, but a variety of techniques can be used to increase results and allow the client to feel more confident. Bouche Boutique offers insight into what women can achieve with their hair, ensuring whatever they choose suits their look. The wrong hairstyle or colour can make you look aged and not blend with your overall style profile. What’s the point of spending money on quality clothes if your hair doesn’t match the overall theme? Your personal style isn’t separate from your hairstyle, they should work together to make up the perfect version of you, so perhaps it’s time for a hair makeover that suits you.

If you continually strive for perfection it may lead to incessant wondering about what else is possible. Although this might be motivating, it may also inhibit satisfaction. Everyone has a different idea of what success is to them, and many consider success to mean that you make less mistakes, are balanced with your emotions and relationships, have the ability to change people’s lives, or can contribute to a better world. To others, success means not being self-conscious, collaborating with others, complaining less, having faith in your mentors, satisfying your needs and wants, enjoying self-satisfaction and positive feedback, or feeling loved and happy. If you routinely review your efforts and outcomes you can track your success. See your failures as opportunities – gratitude is fundamental to recognising and enjoying achievements; practice daily!

When planning a pregnancy there’s much to consider, however research shows continuity and collaboration are most important. Continuity in care providers has been identified as the most influential factor in both optimal clinical outcomes and positive experiences in maternity care. It means unbroken and consistent care from known professionals, which promotes autonomy, self-efficacy, and increased satisfaction through enabling informed decision-making. Working collaboratively in maternity care is paramount. Midwives and obstetricians have skills and knowledge that complement each other, and when used with likemindedness to support women and families it results in more optimal outcomes. Feeling well supported to make decisions that you feel are best for you in a collective nature with your care providers has immense impact on facilitating a positive pregnancy and a positive transition into parenthood.

Refresh with a chemical peel

Easing into the pain

Using healing lasers in dentistry

Towards the end of the year our skin can start to look dull and less vibrant from a variety of stressors and external factors. A chemical peel is a brilliant low downtime way to freshen up your skin and keep you looking bright and awake right through to the new year. Chemical peels help to improve skin tone and skin quality, and are an ideal way to rejuvenate the face. They can also be applied to the neck and décolletage regions. Chemical peels work by removing the dead outer layer of the skin to leave a refreshed and revived after effect. The strength of the peel can vary, and can directly affect the depth of penetration and downtime. Some peels are low strength and can be performed in a lunch-hour, however other treatment modalities can be combined with other treatments for further enhanced results. Chemical peels can be worked into a treatment plan specifically devised for your skin type and the results you want to achieve.

When considering treatment for leg veins people often ask, “How much do the needles hurt?” This is quite a difficult question to answer as each person has a different pain threshold, however there are some points that might help expectations. The needles used in sclerotherapy are very fine. They’re a slightly larger gauge than acupuncture needles, but much smaller than vaccination needles. Pain may also arise from tissue expansion. If the needle isn’t accurately placed inside the lumen of the vein then the injected sclerosant spills outside the vein and causes the tissue to expand. Small amounts of spillage will occur, but skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment. Some areas tend to be more sensitive than others, but this can be alleviated by using fine needles and selecting sclerosants least likely to cause pain.

It is well known that lasers have been used in dentistry for a number of years for various procedures including the removal of decay, reshaping gum tissue or the release of a tongue tie. It is perhaps lesser known that ‘healing’ lasers are also a valuable tool in dentistry, and can be used in order to reduce inflammation, promote cellular growth, or reduce swelling and pain in the mouth. Lasers can also be used in a variety of other ways, including to help settle sensitive teeth, heal cold sores, assist with gum disease, eliminate fungal infections, reduce tooth pulp pain, speed up the movement of teeth during orthodontic treatment, improve bone healing after implants, reduce swelling and bruising, and can relieve muscle tension associated with head, neck and jaw pain. With the appropriate tool and in the right hands, laser therapy is very effective at easing pain and discomfort seen on a daily basis within a dental practice.

Embracing opportunities St Margaret’s offers a personalised and holistic approach to educating young girls. The year 2020 will be an exciting time to join St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Ascot as it celebrates its 125-year anniversary of educating girls, as well as opening its new sports precinct which is currently under construction. The school invites girls entering Years 7 to 11 in 2020 to apply now for the scholarships offered in the categories of academics, mathematics, arts and sports performance. Principal Ros Curtis says St Margaret’s is well known for its balanced approach to education across both academic and extracurricular pursuits, and seeks students who are prepared to fully embrace these opportunities. “St Margaret’s enrolments are at a historical

high, and I believe this is due to our holistic approach to education and strong sense of community. “Academically, we are strong with continued excellent NAPLAN results, placing in the top 20 schools in Queensland for the second consecutive year across all four year levels,” says Ms Curtis. An innovation in the secondary school in 2018 brought St Margaret’s to national attention as one of the top 40 innovative schools in Australia, as selected by the prestigious Educator Magazine. “We introduced academic advising across Years 9 to 12, whereby small groups of

students are assigned to a teacher who is their academic advisor. “Each week, students meet or communicate with their advisors who help them set academic goals, assist in tracking their progress through the Learning Analytics Program, and check in on their general wellbeing,” says Ms Curtis. The academic advising model is part of the school’s personalised approach to each student’s learning and is very popular with both teachers and students. Michelle Scott A mother-of-two and Greek Islands lover. Oh, and the Sales & Marketing guru behind one of Brisbane’s most prestigious hotels. @westinbrisbane

Describe a turning point in your life

What’s your occupation?

Director of Sales & Marketing for The Westin Brisbane and Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane.

How did you get into the hotel industry?

I was initially attracted to the ‘glitz and glam’ of luxury hotels and resorts. I used to dream of hotels such as the Savoy in London and the Ritz in Paris. I quickly learned that the glitz and glam is a perception and the industry is full of hardworking and passionate people. I’ve now been in the industry for 20 years.

Describe your personal style Corporate chic with a hint of savvy class.

The first thing you did this morning

My twenties were about chances and choices, and I definitely took some risks while having fun along the way. My thirties have been about passion and possibilities. A lot has contributed to this, especially being a career mum where you need to be passionate about what you do to make the time away from your family worth it.

What’s your favourite restaurant for dinner? Stokehouse Q.

On your days off what do you like to do? Days off with pre-opening hotels are scarce, so when I have one, it usually starts with breakfast out with the family, maybe a pilates class or bike ride, and then some time at one of Brisbane great parks such as New Farm Park, and then it’s usually finished off with a vino.

Zimmermann Corsage Lantern blouse $1,203

Zimmermann Belted zebra print maxi skirt $902

Favourite place in Brisbane? New Farm Park – I love the farmers markets, dog park and being by the water.

Describe The Westin Brisbane in three words Rejuvenating urban oasis.

If money was no object, what would be your dream holiday? Sailing through the Greek Islands on a luxury yacht.

Can’t do without regular beauty product or treatment Brightening Vitamin C Peel - this is one of the best high performance facials on offer at our Heavenly Spa, and my personal favourite.

SANTORINI

Cuddle my children, Sibella aged 7 and Stirling aged 5, then make coffee!

Go-to Aussie designer I have always loved Zimmerman. They use high quality fabrics and the resort style design is perfect for QLD.
