T

here’s one thing about January I love (apart from long days spent at the beach and time with my family) and that’s the sense of adventure it brings. Summer is a great time of year for road trips and new experiences and we’re truly spoilt for choice when it comes to places to visit close by to Brisbane. Our cover shoot with Destination Scenic Rim and Brisbane BMW shows just how beautiful and rich the Queensland landscape can be with no shortage of places to unplug, wind down and have fun. Staying at the quaint Greenlee Cottages in Sarabah was a highlight of our last week working on our cover and it didn’t hurt to travel in true style in

the brand new BMW X6 – what a ride! Brisbane really showed us who’s boss last year, stepping-up its game on all fronts. To get you in good stead for the year to come, we’ve compiled our A-Z guide showcasing the best of the best in food, adventure, health, beauty and of course, style (page 21). Well, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get amongst it!

With cafes and restaurants, charming country pubs, and accommodation with character also aplenty. Encompassing serious style and performance, put tyres to the tarmac and add some leisurely luxury to your escape and seize the opportunity to road test the new BMW X6 from Brisbane BMW. The ideal leader of the pack on every terrain, the X6 demonstrates its dominance on the road thanks to its powerful engine, precise suspension and features such as the xOffroad package. Cue the BMW Operating System 7.0. En Route GPS, destination: O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards where you’ll arrive not only in the utmost comfort but also in total safety. On your way to O’Reilly’s, it would be

rude not to hit play on the immortalised Australian band Redgum’s song “I was only 19”, as you pass through the town of Canungra. Nestled in the foothills of Lamington National Park, it is a bustling hub of activity with cafes, restaurants, a quintessential country pub and a burgeoning wine industry. Cruising into O’Reilly’s, take in the offerings in abundance. Immerse yourself in the surroundings, sample the local wine, roam the lush grounds, make friends with an alpaca from the Mountview Alpaca Farm (take it for a stroll, yep even with a lead) or have a picnic platter by the creek with treats from Kooroomba Gully, Greenlee Macadamia Farm, and a selection of fresh local produce. “Hey BMW, take us to Greenlee Cottages, Sarabah,” you’ll say as you step back into the X6 and be whisked away to your destination by its chic assistance system. For your complete experience in the Scenic Rim’s country escape, Greenlee Cottages is the perfect way to unplug, sit back, relax and breathe in a sigh of bliss from the surrounding nature and quiet ambience. Be treated to the wholesome local provisions with your complimentary breakfast hamper and wake up to wallabies on the hill amongst the macadamia trees. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, an adventure in the great outdoors or time to unplug, wave goodbye to the buzz of the city as these endless offerings across the Scenic Rim are just the beginning of a thriving slice of paradise just a drive away. Buildin’ on up From music notes to nail guns, founder of Front Porch Properties Rachael Turner made a leap to change a successful career and chase her dreams into a male dominated industry. This is how she did it.

S

ince she was a little girl, Rachael Turner has been passionate about houses and building. “I was always doodling and sketching floor plans and house elevations. After running my music school for 10 years, I had this fire inside me urging me to pursue my passion for design and construction,” she says. Years on, during the build of her own dream house with her husband and inbetween intentional disaster relief work, Rachael realised it was time to make the transition to different types of instruments and swap the white ivory keys and hammertime to a different type of hammertime, sawdust included. “After that, we bought, renovated and sold a couple of houses. They did quite well and I knew I was playing right into my strengths and just loved the entire process,” she says. The transition wasn’t easy, and we’re not

talking calluses and the physical demand, it was the mental grind that set the realisation of the change in stone. Entering a new industry or workplace can be daunting in itself and starting as fresh as a blank canvas came with its own challenges. “Starting again in an entirely new industry, with no contacts or family in the industry was definitely hard. I really had to mentally commit to the journey and not back down no matter what,” she says. This was one test, being a female in a male oriented industry was the next. “In the early days, being a woman in the construction industry, (a piano player at that!) was certainly intimidating and difficult. I definitely had to work hard to prove myself,” she says. Years on, Rachael has settled into the workforce and blokey environment, hitting home that women really can kick-on in any arena.

QUICK TOOLBELT TALK: Best place to cool off in Brisbane? Our new back deck we built at home this year. Beautiful breezes in the afternoons! Favourite road trip song? I’m actually more of an audio book girl! I hate the feeling of wasting time driving, so for me, long commutes are a perfect chance to multi-talk and to listen to a book/podcast and learn something! What is your most treasured possession? A couple of weeks ago I was in the Bahamas helping with the re-build after Hurricane Dorian. I spent several days helping an elderly lady clean out her very damaged home. There was one beautiful serving dish in her kitchen that was completely buried in mud but remained unbroken. She gave it to me as a gift to remember her and my time in the Bahamas. I will treasure this for many years. What’s something about you that would surprise people? I have my motorbike license and every year my husband and our friend go on an annual motorcycle trip somewhere in the world. Biggest building fail? On a job a few years ago, a crane truck was delivering a huge load of timber and building materials. He parked awkwardly on the curb, and in order to avoid the crane toppling over, he dropped the load he was carrying, right on top of one of my carpenters’ utes! Let’s just say the ute was ruined and I don’t think that guy still has his job!

grew up all over Brisbane, but my heart belongs to Bracken Ridge where I spent most of my years in a little brown brick Housing Commission house full of small holes and big love. I was drawn to journalism and writing because I wanted to find out about what made people do things, good or bad. If I learned why, then I might discover why some people did things in my own life. I spent one year studying at University of Southern Queensland, then one year at QUT Gardens Point and then I got a job at Brisbane News and I spent the next 20 years wondering if I should go back and finish my degree. Before working with The Australian, I wrote for Qweekend Magazine, writing big longform features about Queenslanders, which is kind of exactly what I have the joy of doing today

on The Weekend Australian Magazine. On a perfect Sunday afternoon you’ll find me kicking torpedoes in the park with my mates, Dan and Matty, and all our kids doing acrobatics across the cricket pitch. My career highlights have been spending days with my heroes Clive James and Les Murray as they faced their inevitable departures from this big beautiful rock. Both of those poetry giants are not with us anymore but that time with them has lodged them permanently in my heart. I decided to write Boy Swallows Universe because there were things inside that story that were just too darn glorious, thrilling, dramatic and comedic to resist. The greatest story characters I’ve ever written were outside my bedroom door for 20 years. WE CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF TRENT’S WRITTEN WORD AND THERE’S MORE COMING TO BOOKSTORES THIS YEAR. FOOD + DRINK

Aye , Papi! This Italian pop-up is here to stay.

WORDS BY GEORGINA MURRAY

O

nce upon a time along the pristine waters overlooking the city skyline sat an easy-going foodie hot spot, adored by locals, where Aperol spritz flowed, antipasti was aplenty and spaghetti far from regretti. No, we’re not talking Naples. We’re talking somewhere much closer to home, with no passport needed. The only requirement for these custom controls is to have a good time. This, friends, is Ciao Papi and we’re saying hello and benvenuto as this haunt is here to stay. Originally a temporary pop-up at Howard Smith Wharves, Ciao Papi impressed with their authentic eats and all-round good vibes that the higher-ups decided to give it a permanent and prime position on the New Farm end of the precinct to join the ranks of the Wharves. Whether it’s a complete dining experience, a romantic date night or early evening delight, like an Italian grandpa, Ciao Papi can do it all. But it’s their Aperitivo Afternoons that really puts them on the map. From 4pm – 6pm, Mondays through to Friday’s, do it like the Italians do and sip the afternoon away with a spritz in one hand and complimentary snacks in the other – it’s just like Nonna’s where

you’re more or less force fed, but happy about it. The restaurant menu features traditional meals you would expect to eat street-side in Positano, but with a gourmet twist. Their antipasti menu includes rock oysters, house made focaccia, olives, spicy Calabrese salami, Burrata, and perfectly prepared blistered peppers, just to name a few. Yet, it’s the mains that really have us feeling the amore (meaning love, but also pronounced ah-more-ay…get it?). With dishes to delight the whole famiglia like Fusilli with garden pesto, green beans and gremolata or grilled lamb cutlets with salsa verde, the bambinis to your most boring uncle, will be impressed. Don’t forget dessert. Don’t ever forget the dessert. And you’ll learn why, with treats like tiramisu, fresh figs with honeycomb and orange and Campari granita gracing the menu. Whatever the occasion, Ciao Papi will have you feeling as though you’ve been whisked away to the Riviera within your first sip of a spritz. No passports and no bookings required, bene! On a crest of success promotion

St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School is riding a wave of success with enrolments at an all-time high and nearing capacity. Principal Ros Curtis believes this achievement is because more and more families are looking for the holistic approach to education for which St Margaret’s is renowned. “We just don’t focus on one area,” she says. “For 125 years we have pursued a balanced approach to education across both academic and extracurricular pursuits and encourage students to fully embrace these opportunities. Our scholarships also reflect this philosophy with applications invited across a range of areas including academic and performancebased (visual and performing arts and sport).” To be considered for a scholarship, girls who will be entering Years 7 to 11 in 2021

must apply to sit the ACER Scholarship exam on Saturday 29 February 2020. Ms Curtis says academically, the school continues to excel. “For the third consecutive year, St Margaret’s girls recorded results within the top 15 schools in Queensland for all categories of NAPLAN testing, with the Year 3 girls ranking number one in the state. In addition, our Year 12 results are also consistently high, with 97 to 100 per cent of our students receiving university offers,” she says. In 2020, the school is celebrating its 125-year anniversary. “There will be much celebration as we honour our traditions, which we combine with an innovative approach to

preparing our girls for their best futures,” says Ms Curtis. “For the past two years, St Margaret’s has won an Innovation Award through the prestigious Educator magazine and in 2019 was named the nation’s Boarding School of the Year at the Australian Education Awards and was a finalist in two other categories.” Scholarship applications close Monday 10 February 2020, see stmargarets.qld.edu.au for more. BULIMBA DERMATOLOGY Dr Scott Webber and the team at Bulimba Dermatology have been offering patients the unquestionable benefits of HALO Hybrid Fractional Laser for several years. Now, a revolutionary new combination treatment is further building on the benefits of HALO laser.

K

nown for revolutionising skin resurfacing, the HALO laser was introduced in the U.S. back in 2014 and Dr Webber and his team have been treating patients with it since 2016. “HALO laser speaks for itself. It offers something consistent and unique to my patients. In Queensland, even from a relatively young adult age, many of us have accumulated sun damage. This damage causes discolouration, freckling and coarseness to the texture of our skin and a dullness that makes us look prematurely aged. HALO enables us to provide a dramatic improvement in texture and light reflexivity to our patients’ skin with a noticeable, renewed freshness to their skin’s appearance. All this with a short downtime of just a few days,” he says. Following ground-breaking results by leading dermatologists in the U.S., Dr Webber recently began treating patients with the combination of HALO and BBL (BroadBand Light) to further enhance the benefits to his patients. According to Dr Webber, HALO and BBL are two very different treatments for rejuvenation of skin. “What we have noticed is that by combining both treatments at the

same time on our patients, we are able to achieve levels of improvement to skin tone, fine wrinkling and pigmentation that we just can’t achieve with either laser system separately,” he says. Treating medical and surgical patients of all ages, Dr Webber required a laser system that rejuvenates the skin of younger clients in their 20s and 30s as well as more intensive results for older patients. “I have used many different laser rejuvenation systems including Fraxel, Laser Genesis, IPL and fractionated CO2. None of these lasers in my experience have been able to offer such consistent results safely and with such short downtime as the HALO. Now when combined with BBL we are getting even better outcomes for our patients,” he says. With any laser treatment, it’s important to ensure the operators have a solid knowledge of the skin and the conditions being treated. Safety of patients is paramount. To find out more about the benefits of HALO combined with BBL for your skin, contact Bulimba Dermatology. BULIMBA DERMATOLOGY LEVEL 2, 90-94 OXFORD ST, BULIMBA P 3399 1100 BULIMBADERMATOLOGY.COM.AU

PLASTIC SURGERY

We spoke to the five-strong medical team at Valley Plastic Surgery to learn their thoughts on what you need to consider when ‘plastic surgery’ is on your 2020 resolution list.

34

|

any of us make New Year’s resolutions, and in this modern era of self-love and care, it should come as no surprise that over the next few months, the Valley Plastic Surgery team will spend many hours converting moments of midnight madness into real actions. Dr Matthew Peters, FRACS specialist plastic surgeon and co-director of Valley Plastic Surgery, feels that it is important to make sure his patients are seeking help for the right reasons. “All of our patients present with genuine concerns. At this time of year, though, it is important to determine the motivation behind the request. Thankfully, most see the new year as ‘their’ year to finally do something for themselves. They have often been considering plastic surgery for some time, and the change in year can be the trigger to finally seek an opinion,” he says. Dr Raymond Goh, FRACS specialist plastic surgeon and another one of the VPS directors reports that with the right motivation, a well-constructed plan can be made. “Plastic surgery is not just the procedure itself. The recovery period is equally – if not more – important. It is vital to listen to the advice provided and to consider how the recovery plan and timeframe fits into the year ahead,” he says.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

Dr Peters agrees. “Most of my operations are elective and require up to six weeks of activity modifications to achieve the desired result. Surgical garments are another consideration, especially for my massive weight loss and breast patients who have to wear these supports non-stop during this time – juggling these with work uniforms and an existing wardrobe can be tricky, especially in the warmer months,” he explains. The entire team, including FRACS specialist plastic surgeons Dr Alys Saylor and Dr Drew Cronin, and FACD specialist dermatologist Dr Kate DeAmbrosis, all support the notion that patients should discuss their requirements with suitably qualified doctors. The start of a new year can see patients make quick decisions with permanent consequences, some of which can be less than ideal. VPS recommend that patients build upon their holiday thoughts to construct a list of questions relevant to them, to give them the confidence that the treatment they seek is being done for the right reasons and by a practitioner with the right qualifications. VARICOSE VEINS

Step into 2020 with newfound confidence from The Leg Vein Doctor. Nearly 65% of the blood in your body is held within veins as it slowly circulates back to the heart. Veins are elastic vessels and have the ability to stretch and contract depending on whether you need to lose or conserve heat. Small valves inside the veins point their leaflets in the direction of the heart preventing back flow. In your legs, veins are confronted with the problem of returning blood back up the leg against the force of gravity. Nature has designed an ingenious method of

overcoming this problem. As you walk, the calf muscles act like a pump and compresses the deep veins pushing the blood back up the leg (“the calf muscle pump”). But this affect only applies to the deep veins inside the muscles and not the superficial veins outside the muscles. Superficial veins rely entirely on the ability of the valves to do their job and not allow blood to reflux back down to your feet. This is where people with varicose veins have a problem. They inevitably become larger and more extensive

W

over time and the increasing back pressure begins to cause congestion and swelling around the foot and ankle. Symptoms of the legs feeling heavy and congested are common. People often report cramps and “restless legs”. Depending upon the severity, skin changes cause symptoms such as rash, itch or pigmentation and then eventually breakdown of the skin surface causing ulceration. BODY

IF ANYTHING SEEMS DIFFERENT, NEVER BE AFRAID TO SHOW A DOCTOR”

CHECK YOURSELF It’s easy to forget that our body requires routine maintenance every now and again but if there’s anything we have learned from one of Australia’s favourite doctors, Dr Jill Forer, it’s that there are easy steps everyone can take to get our health in check!

GET SKIN DEEP There’s a very important, safe, small to moderate dose of sun that everyone needs, but in Australia, we often get more than we bargain for. Self-checks are beyond crucial for healthy skin and make sure to get a partner or friend to check your back. Act quickly if something new appears or if a spot changes shape, colour or texture. Remember, melanoma can be red too, not just black! Get your skin checked yearly by a GP, skin cancer clinic or specialist and always be cautious – it pays off.

ALL THE BREAST You should know your breasts like the back of your hand and monthly self-breast checks will make sure of that. Make sure to examine them when you’re sitting or standing and lying down, as certain parts of the breast are better felt in different positions. Don’t forget to examine your

JANUARY 2020

armpits, which are where your lymph nodes are hiding! Get in front of a mirror and look for colour changes, shape changes and any rashes or discharge from your nipples. Lift your arms above your head and then press them firmly on your hips, looking at your skin texture – it should remain unchanged in both positions. If anything seems different, never be afraid to show a doctor.

DOCTOR DOCTOR Some things are best left to the experts, so it’s important you’re regularly paying them a visit. Cervical screenings – once called pap smears – should be done every five years beginning at the age of 25 if you’re receiving normal results, but it’s important to pop in for checks between this period to be safe and ensure clinical signs don’t get missed. This includes breast checks, skin checks, blood pressure checks and important key blood tests like checking your iron levels, which is the number one nutrient deficiency in the world, especially among women.

WATCH YOUR MOUTH As the entry to your entire gastrointestinal tract, your mouth is integral to good health. Many diseases will show their face in your mouth like ulcers and blisters so yearly dental checks are vital. Take daily care by eating a wholefood, unprocessed diet and paying attention to oral hygiene.

FIT BUSTERS Have you ever been given advice that you wondered has any truth to it? This month we looked at some of the most common myths in the health and fitness sphere and broke it down with our local experts to bring you the ultimate truth bombs.

MYTH:

“Pilates is only for women”

Director of Pilates Studio 64, Jordanna Smith, debunks a common misconception about the effective strengthening and conditioning practice. While it’s true that Pilates is very popular for women, it was actually developed by a man called Joseph Pilates! I have been exposed to many men in in this space, such as my teachers and mentors, with the first being my now husband who was extremely keen to learn Pilates after sustaining an injury from karate. These days, there are so many public male and female figures from around the world who use Pilates as part of their training regimes and overall wellness – such as LeBron James, Maria Sharapova, Christiano Ronaldo and Stephanie Gilmore just to name a few.

What type of person suits Pilates? Pilates is suitable for everyone! More often than not, our group classes and small groups are with all age levels, fitness levels and abilities. The ultimate goal in the practice of Pilates is complete and total well-being. From the post-partum mother to a mature aged client to a young or professional athlete, it is suitable for everyone. Do you have to be a certain body shape to benefit from Pilates? It is important as an instructor to assess the many differences between individuals such

as age, body type and general flexibility. Pilates allows instructors adaptability to create programs and to use a repertoire to creatively compile a program that will benefit different body types. PS64 has been thriving since 2005 and continues to offer small individual and personalised studio and group-based Pilates classes. Jordanna and Shayne Smith are also BASI Pilates teaching Facilitators and conduct Pilates teacher training courses around Australia. MYTH:

“Gyms are intimidating”

Gym anxiety is a common feeling, but Genesis Health and Fitness Lawnton and Winsdor franchisee, Brenton Williamson, is here to weigh in on your fitness fears.

Our club places a lot of pride on being the gym for everybody. Although many people would argue that gyms are intimidating, we debunk this myth through the quality of our members and staff. We provide an environment that our team would like to work out in, starting with a warm and friendly greeting when you arrive to assistance with your training in a group fitness class, personal training or Coaching Zone session. 44

What’s offered to Genesis clients to make them comfortable? Starting a fitness journey at a new gym can be daunting, so when members join, they are offered assistance with their training and introductory packages with one of our 15 highly experienced personal trainers or in our Coaching Zone, which is a small group-training program with an expert coach using the latest MyZone heart rate technology to track your progress. We provide easy access to our team members, who are always available to answer questions. We also offer a Kids Club Crèche STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

“Personal training can be daunting”

Personal trainers may seem like they thrive off of your pain, but they are actually more approachable than you think, as the Training Gym Head Coach at Jetts, Bart Walsh, shares. The moment you have a conversation with one of our friendly personal trainers, you’ll understand we’re here to help, not judge. It’s not about status quo or elitism; it’s about helping you achieve your goals in a way that works for you. What do Jetts’ personal trainers offer clients to make them comfortable? Our trainers meet their clients where they are. Every person is unique, and our PTs know this. We will build a plan based upon your fitness and lifestyle. It’s all about health and fitness for life, so we take our time if we need to. We’re humans too! All of your questions will be answered with a simple, down to earth conversation. Our vocation is to get you fit and healthy – all you need to do is reach out.

Many women think weights are only for men. What do you think of this? This is a common myth we wish would be put to bed! Weight training will build your metabolism, shape your muscles and allow you to push harder in your cardio sessions. It won’t make you bulky, we promise. Ask someone you admire for their workout and we can almost guarantee they use weights. If you don’t know where to start, you know where we are!

What type of people get involved at Jetts? Everyone! From teenagers to senior superheroes, our clubs cater for all humans. Best of all, this diversity builds a community that spans age and demographic. You have to feel it to truly understand it. JETTS VARIOUS LOCATIONS JETTS.COM.AU

MYTH:

“Barre is just for ballerinas”

We bet you thought Barre was only for dancers. Think again! The top myths busted by the owner of Xtend Barre Stones Corner, Shay Stafford. Yes, you’d be correct in thinking that Barre = a full-body workout + elements of dance and ballet. However, what we’ll have you know is that Barre is not restricted to people with ballet experience, in fact, you don’t need dance experience at all. Here to put the Barre x ballerina myth to bed is Shay Stafford of Xtend Barre Stones Corner. Many people believe that some knowledge of ballet is required to do a Barre class. Is this true? Not at all! Most people who do Xtend Barre have never done a dance class. Many newbies

say they have two left feet, are “unco” and can’t touch their toes. Anyone can do Barre. People pick up the moves very quickly and become addicted fast! For a beginner, can you explain what Barre is and what to expect? Xtend Barre is a full-body workout done to music. It’s an exhilarating and fun group fitness class held in a boutique dance studio. Anyone can do it! We use dance movements and Pilates fundamentals, so it is safe and effective. The results that people achieve with Barre workouts are toned arms, back, glutes JANUARY 2020

and thighs, improved cardio fitness, core strength, flexibility and better posture too (hello, desk job). Is Barre only for women? No! Men can absolutely do Barre and really benefit from it, especially when combined with their existing training. Mixing up your workouts is important, and we see many men improving their flexibility, core strength and coordination due to Barre. RELATIONSHIP ADVICE with Paul Baker

STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson

WHOLESOME DENTISTRY with Dr Anne-Maree Cole

New Year’s resolution

The relaxed suit

Healthy holiday

When making your New Year’s resolutions, do you consider your relationship and the positive changes you could make to it? Most people want the best for themselves, and a healthy relationship should be no different. Investing in your relationship can have amazing outcomes and can set you up for an intimate and better year together. Put relationship coaching at the top of the to-do list this year. Seeking professional relationship coaching should improve your communication and support, help you gain a greater understanding of each other’s thoughts and feelings, and increase intimacy and romance. Make improving your relationship one resolution you want to keep this year. The benefits of coaching will set your year up for bigger and better returns on your investment. You will thank each other for the gift. Remember, the more you invest, the bigger the return. Get the best returns by being motivated in improving the most important relationship you have.

The idea of an ill-fitting suit doesn’t make any sense, but this is one of the current suiting trends. The relaxed suit – as it has been appropriately named – has been front and centre in recent months and has even been adorned by celebrities at the top of the style tree, like David Beckham. Designer Kim Jones and Dior have come together to create a double-breasted, singlebuttoned, relaxed suit, which pushes the boundaries of the relaxed suit. There are also four buttons with two close, double-breasted suits. The looser trend is much better in a double-breasted jacket rather than the singlebreasted option. Be ready for this in both men’s and women’s suiting. In regards to design, think fairly well fitted on the shoulder, bigger through the mid section, a little longer in the jacket length and a full trouser with extra length. Proceed with caution, as this is not for everyone. This should not be your business style but instead your go-to for a cocktail party or fashion event.

School holidays are often a welcome reprieve from busy, weekly routines, but they shouldn’t be a time for kids to stray from their daily oral hygiene habits. Often these breaks in routine can lead to teeth not getting brushed regularly and diets not being as healthy as they should be, which is definitely not ideal. Extra fun over the Christmas break means extra care and attention should be paid to our teeth and mouths. As well as keeping up with twice-daily brushing and daily flossing, be extra careful not to crunch on hard lollies or pork crackling and avoid using your teeth to open up present packaging. A lot of chipped front teeth are caused by mishaps around the swimming pool, on trampolines and whilst riding skateboards. Have fun on the holiday, but just be mindful of your teeth. If you do run into trouble over the break, please call James Street Dentists to get your smile back on track.

VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp

Belongingness

Leg up, ladies!

Belonging is a universal, powerful, unique and subjective experience related to a yearning for connection with others, a human need for positive regard, and the desire for interpersonal interaction. Belonging is a fundamental motivation with a compelling need to fit in. We are conditioned to provide belonging to others as well. Our sense of belonging shapes the way our relationships with each other, groups, and communities function. An absence of belonging has devastating effects on us. Social isolation and loneliness have significant effects on health, wellbeing, pose a greater health threat than smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise, and can lead to premature death. Quality social belonging involves face-to-face personal relationships; not connections in the digital space. It releases a range of brain neurotransmitters that increase positive feelings and reduce stress. Establishing and maintaining relationships takes energy, but it is worth the effort.

There are many factors that predispose a person to venous disease and it’s not just down to genetics. Varicose veins and spider veins are seen more often in women than in men. Some of the factors that can put ladies more at risk are: Weight gain: excess weight and obesity can put an additional load on your venous system. The extra pressure can cause valves in the veins to fail sooner. Hormones: during puberty, pregnancy and menopause, women can often develop more noticeable veins due to changes in the production of key hormones. Immobility: standing for long periods can be a requirement of many female dominated vocations – think hairdressing, teaching and nursing. Immobility forces the veins to work harder in order to return blood to your heart. Age: as your body ages, the venous system can weaken. For example, elasticity in the vein walls can decrease, leading to veins that begin to bulge more noticeably.

BEFORE AFTER

BODY promotion

Tis the season to be tanned and thanks to Brooklyn Beauty Bar, styler Fiona Williams experienced her very first professional golden spritz this month. I often self-tan each week religiously for events and especially now that clothing calls for less layers. Call me crazy, but I just feel more confident with a tan. With an opportunity to have it done by the incredible team at BBB James Street, my usual Thursday night tanning ritual was replaced with no sticky skin on the couch or awkward attempts at covering my back. There’s only one thing better than feeling bronzed and boujee before an event this summer, and that’s when two spray tans for one is on offer, making it easier and safer to have that go-to glow. Thanks to Brooklyn Beauty Bar, over January and February you can experience two tans for the price of one when mentioning “Style Tan” next time you book in.

Getting ready for your spray tan is key in order for it to last longer. The better you exfoliate before your spray tan, the more even it will be. In order to allow your skin to settle, always book your spray tan for half a day after you exfoliate and shave. Like me, if you’re timing your spray tan for a big event, you want to ensure it will be at its best. Usually three showers after application gives the best look. The secret behind the BBB even toned tan is that they’ve developed a unique blending technique for a beautiful, even look, and this is what makes Brooklyn Beauty Bar tans the best. Once you’re sprayed, your technician will blend your hands, arms and feet with a blending brush to ensure no lines or harsh colour difference. One of the best parts is that these tans are express. After two hours the tan will develop and you’re encouraged to shower, leaving you with a beautifully even tan that will last up to a whole week. OFFER ENDS 28 FEBRUARY 2020, SIMPLY MENTION “STYLETAN” WHEN BOOKING. BROOKLYN BEAUTY BAR 5/15 JAMES ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY 61 PETRIE TCE, THE BARRACKS P 0421 202 447 BROOKLYNBEAUTYBAR.COM.AU
