WELCOME to autumn winter 2016 at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. Autumn winter 2016 caters to every fashion personality. From the Victorian touches of lace collars, ruffles and longer skirt lengths, to impactful graphic prints and exotic influences from Shanghai to Marrakesh, our Australian and international designer friends and favourite brands have interpreted this expertly this season. The trends are distinctive and strong, with florals staying prominent but reinvented this time with a darker edge. A 90s influence is felt through pared back slip dresses, androgynous looks and easy, long-line coats and cardigans. A presence from the 80s can also be felt in bold graphics and print-driven mod pieces. If you’re looking for colour to update your wardrobe this season, deep shades in burgundy, red and navy will see you through this winter from Manning Cartell’s lace dresses to Country Road’s knits, leather bags, shoes and felt hats. Menswear too sees touches of red and look to signature denim with alpine-inspired chunky knits as a key look for winter. From the minimalist to the style eccentric this season, fashion prevails this autumn winter and Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is your leading destination for style.

BEHIND WORSHIP WINTER As a photographer, there is nothing more rewarding than when you first put your eye to the camera and find the focus on your model. The pre-shot camera checks, makeup, hair, styling, props and lighting has been completed and then suddenly there, in front of your eyes, is this vision, this beautiful image that you were creating in your subconscious. That thought started as a simple idea about tone, warmth and the intimate nature of autumn winter as seasons, suddenly takes physical life. This beautiful autumn winter 2016 campaign, Worship Winter, is all about the strength in fashion and our relationship with the tones and emotions of winter. It’s about the intimacy we embrace as the weather gets cooler and our sudden urge to cover ourselves and be hugged by layers of the most beautiful fashions of the year. Embrace the beautiful imagery, the fashion, and worship winter this season. Celebrate the best time of year to wear beautiful clothes. PHOTOGRAPHER, ISRAEL RIVERA

Australian designers take the
INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT While Australian fashion was believed to be once only led by internationals, a string of home-grown designers flourishing offshore are changing that perception.
There are a myriad of names achieving traction globally as our labels come into high acclaim. Some of the most notable being Zimmermann, Camilla and Alex Perry, now recognised as celebrity favourites, household names and taking centre stage at international fashion weeks. Nicky and Simone Zimmermann’s highfashion swim and resort wear line is one of the labels shining above the rest. Starting out in a stall at Sydney’s Paddington Markets in the early 90s, the company’s base of operations is now
located in New York City, where collections are a highlight at New York Fashion Week every year. As one of the most successful modern Australian labels, the Zimmermann sister’s twist on typical swim and casual wear has made them a favourite amongst celebrities such as Beyoncé and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. Another Australian designer that has caught Beyoncé’s eye is that of Camilla Franks, the innovator and creator behind boho brand Camilla.
10 / Autum n Winter 2016
The colloquially named ‘Queen B’ is so captivated by the brand that she once spontaneously organised to meet Camilla in her Sydney store, and has since exposed the brand to her Instagram following of 60 million. “She is the most beautiful and humble person. It was a really fun, magical experience and one you never think you’re going to have when you’re a young designer,” said Ms. Franks. Like Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, Franks has built her international customer

“It certainly is a validation of the brand and testament to my philosophy of dressing strong, powerful, assured women,” he said. Sydney born designer, Alex Perry has created an empire out of his sensual, dramatic gowns, which have been chosen by the likes of Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner. E! America’s host Giuliana Rancic recently shone in a stunning orange Alex Perry gown at the Golden Globes. It’s not the first time the glamorous presenter has flaunted Perry’s frocks, often choosing ‘The King of Australian Couture’ for red carpet events. With many other Australian labels also finding their place on international red carpets, Australian designers are cementing their well-earned position in the international market. base over a number of years, going from travelling around the world at her own cost, to achieving world-wide recognition after stylising the common kaftan with her unique and distinctive designs. Camilla Franks says her loyal celebrity and influencer following have helped contribute to her international success, now with over 220 international stockists, and the U.S being their biggest export market. “These strong and passionate women embrace the ethos and soul of Camilla, and often inspire others to enjoy the Camilla brand,” she said. The label has also been chosen by A-listers including Jennifer Lopez, Kate Hudson, Sofía Vergara, Vanessa Hudgens and Oprah Winfrey (who sported Camilla pieces almost daily on her Australian tour) to name a few.
“Our international tribe is definitely growing and blossoming, which is very exciting for both the team and I,” said Ms. Franks. Red carpet events also give Australian designers the opportunity to be placed in the spotlight they so greatly deserve, indicative of the rising profile of Australians in fashion. Since launching in 2000, Perth’s Aurelio Costarella has built a strong celebrity clientele, dressing everyone from Rihanna to Charlize Theron and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark for red carpet events, TV shows and award ceremonies. The brand now has New York PR agencies showcasing their collections, helping to continue to grow their international success and support their growth. Mr. Costarella says he is flattered to have high profile women wear his designs.

an interview with
COLLETTE Iconic fashion designer Collette Dinnigan has been creating beautiful clothing for more than 25 years. Photography by Holly Blake
On the eve of a new exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Collette Dinnigan: Unlaced, she spoke to Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences curator Glynis Jones about her background, inspiration and changes in the industry throughout her career. See a pop-up preview of the exhibition on display at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre from 30 March to 10 April 2016. Visit www.indooroopillyshopping.com.au for details.
Your early years growing up in South Africa seemed to be full of adventure. How do you think your upbringing shaped your principles and career? What I remember most was always being in a family filled with love and laughter. My parents were both very creative and social, and we met many different and interesting people from all nationalities. My mother was very much against apartheid, so we often had visits from the local police reminding my parents of the laws, which were totally disregarded in our home. We spent a lot of time out in the bush and on my uncle’s game reserve. I can remember feeding orphaned giraffes, left behind by poachers, from large milk bottles. Our time in Mandini, Zululand, was mostly spent with Dad building our yacht in the front garden. My parents and upbringing instilled in me the sense of adventure I still have today. They also taught me to be independent and, most importantly, to follow my heart and be kind to others.
What originally made you want to study fashion design and start your own label? I have always been creative and I guess I never considered doing anything administrative, so from a very early age it was clear I had only two directions to follow: art or animals. I wanted to be a vet or marine biologist and being impatient I took the shortest degree! I think my own label happened as I was too stubborn to work for anyone; I didn’t agree with most fashion companies and how they copied international designers. So in a nutshell I went out on my own.
You have had the honour of being invited to show your collections on the official ready-towear schedule in Paris since 1995. Can you tell us about your first fashion show in Paris? It was not at all contrived! I had no real expectations but of course I secretly dreamed all the world would take notice. The energy was like nothing else I had experienced and just the countdown to the show was like living in a bubble. The show was very successful and the response from the international press endorsed the brand, which I am sure helped us with being invited to be on the calendar. Godfrey Deeney from Women’s Wear Daily recently told me how he had wanted to write about the show but his editor-inchief had said no, as I was unheard of and therefore of little interest; however, when he saw the images he approved the story.
12 / Autum n Winter 2016
What advice would you offer those starting in the Australian industry? Be original, focus on good quality, welldesigned products, and be passionate about what you are doing – it is a lot of hard all-consuming work so you need to be enjoying the hours you spend working, especially the early days. I believe Australia has a huge potential in the resort and swim market as it fits seasonally on the international calendar. I think it’s a missed opportunity.
What does the future hold for you? My eyes will always be wide open and sparkle when there is an idea that inspires me, and no doubt a new project awaits me. First published in MAAS Magazine, Winter 2015.

COMFORTS Station Road Dining is warming up for the cooler months with palatable produce and decadent dishes. We caught up with the chefs of Station Road Dining to find which menu items will be too good to resist this winter.
OLÉ FUEGO A heart warmer from OlÊ Fuego is the Fideua con Setas, a Spanish pasta dish with mushrooms and chestnut custard. This rich dish matched with a pale ale balances the creamy flavour and earthiness of the mushrooms with a slightly bitter and crisp beverage. Another dish to try this season is the Puerro Ahumado, made up of smoked and charred leek, almonds, hot pimento with a glass of semillon sauvignon blanc to complement the sweet, smoky flavour of the leek. PIG ‘N’ WHISTLE BISTROT A generous tender eye fillet grilled to your liking, topped with porcini butter, has a place in everyone’s heart. Pig ‘N’ Whistle Bistrot serves this dish with sarladaise potatoes, a decadent French style potato bake. Not ignoring the vegetables, this dish features spinach puree using fresh spinach from the markets and slow roasted field mushrooms. Pair with a Kaesler Stonehorse Shiraz - its savoury and spicy palate work well with the earthiness of this dish. Using high quality Queensland beef from their own cattle farm and in-house butcher, and pastry from their full time French pastry chef, the Beef & Guinness Pie is beyond satisfying. Slow cooked in Guinness and gravy and baked in buttery puff pastry, the dish is completed with creamy mashed potatoes and vegetables, a dish that will satisfy every time in the cooler months. CORBETT & CLAUDE Every pizza on Corbett & Claude’s menu includes a refined selection of quality ingredients, wood-fired to perfection. The pork and fennel sausage pizza with a light cream base and mozzarella cheese includes crumbled pork and fennel sausage, shredded red cabbage, topped with a fresh julienne of green apples. This pizza gives us classic autumn flavours with a light fragrance, giving the dish its freshness and crisp texture. Savour with the “Cloudy with a Chance of Apples” cocktail, a perfect blend of green apples, lemon juice, mint, elderflower liqueur and vodka. P 07 3378 8899

HARAJUKU GYOZA With the cabin-like design of Harajuku Gyoza, and the lively atmosphere of the restaurant, you will feel like you are being transported to downtown Tokyo. Enjoy the sharing nature of Japanese Izakaya dining, with winter favourites including the grilled duck gyozas with chives, onion, garlic, ginger, and cabbage paired with traditional saké. Izakaya dish, pork katsudon, is a popular winter dish in Japan made from fresh panko crumbed fried pork over a bed of rice. This dish pairs well with Umeshyu, as the crisp sweet plum wine complements the richness of the pork. Japanese plums are harvested in late summer and the short fermenting process means that it is a drink enjoyed particularly in winter.
NANTUCKET KITCHEN & BAR Using Queensland’s own Moreton Bay bugs, Nantucket Kitchen & Bar do amazing things with garlic butter and steamed rice to create this popular dish. A New Zealand sauvignon blanc complements the seafood with its crisp favour.
