SENIOR DESIGNER Jade Russell

NEW ROMANCE

WELCOME TO OUR February edition. Love is in the air; with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it’s the season of proposals and wedding plans. Did you know that February 29 is traditionally a day for women to propose to men? I discovered this snippet of Irish history in a column from one of our new Style Experts, Karl Schwantes on page 36. Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting former Bechtel Corporation boss Andy Greig, who has recently retired from the corporate world and set up an investment company offering start-ups advice and mentoring. Many budding entrepreneurs have fantastic ideas that could change our world, so it’s great to see someone like Andy lending a hand. You can read all about Andy’s new company, page 22.

SENIOR DESIGNER Junita Hayes

THIS TIME OF year is brimming with expectations; it’s a time to live and love fearlessly. What more could you want? The feasting and fun of the festive season is over and stern resolutions have met with reality. “Exercise more and be a better you,” our inner critics whisper. But kindness can go a long way, so I’m trying a less punishing approach to my health and fitness journey this time around. Instead of gearing up for regret, I’m setting smaller, more manageable goals and trying to schedule some relaxing time with my yoga mat. In my world, a new year means a wardrobe revamp and it’s time to get started. No matter how chic your fashion, it’s not complete until you make it your own. The only limit is your imagination, so run wild and enjoy your surroundings. Life is all about the little moments and we are crazy for you, February. I hope you all find something you love in this issue. Spread the love by taking the time to pen a handwritten letter, give a friend an extra hug, swing by a colleague’s desk with a treat, and spoil your loved ones with memories. There are no limits.

Go vegetarian and forgo wine.

Have a great month. Paul Johnston

L OVE

IS IN THE AIR Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Hannah Doody takes a look at the chemistry of some of Brisbane’s most influential couples.

“NEVER PASS UP SOMETHING AMAZING. SAY ‘YES’ AND WORK OUT THE DETAILS LATER.”

“TREAT YOUR LOVED ONE LIKE YOU WOULD A FLATMATE; CLEAN UP YOUR PLATES AND DON’T LEAVE TOWELS ON THE FLOOR.”

BEN CUTTING AND ERIN HOLLAND Brisbane-born Australian cricketer Ben Cutting and former Miss World Erin Holland first met through friends in her home town of Cairns. Little did they know that, a year later, they would be flying halfway around the world just to see each other. Ben fell for Erin’s ability to quote the entire discography of Billy Birmingham’s 12th Man albums. For their first date, Ben prepared a homemade meal, including a dessert special. Spending more time apart than together, the pair say it’s easy to keep the spark alive. “When we are in the same city we like to spend as much alone-time together as possible,” Ben says. “We are always going out for breakfast somewhere together, or we crash on the couch to a movie or two.” The pair don’t fight too much, but if they do, they make a point of talking it over and never going to bed without resolving the issue. When it comes to love, Ben says not to sleep on it. “Never pass up something amazing. Say ‘yes’ and work out the details later.” 16

LI CUNXIN AND MARY MCKENDRY Plucked from extreme poverty at age 11 to study ballet and serve in Chairman Mao’s revolution, Li’s story is shared in his autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer. Mary, on the other hand, grew up in Rockhampton, where she began dancing at the age of eight. They found each other through their shared passion for ballet, first meeting while performing at the esteemed Houston Ballet in London. Now married for 30 years, Li and Mary have three children – Sophie, Thomas and Bridie. These days, Li is the artistic director of the Queensland Ballet; Mary works with him and coaches professional dancers. Li says it was her honesty, kind soul and curiosity for other cultures that made him fall for her, while his ability to talk to anyone from a car park attendant to a conductor first caught Mary’s eye. Despite their 30 years of marriage, they both have different ideas of the key to a long, happy relationship: “Be loving, caring and considerate,” Li says. “Be a good cook,” laughs Mary. “Li is a great chef; my idea of the perfect date is sharing Li’s home-cooked dumplings.”

“Be loving, caring and considerate.”

STAV AND KAT DAVIDSON They say love’s a funny thing. But when two comedians get married, the phrase takes on a whole new meaning. Stav (HIT105) and Katrina (612ABC) Davidson first met at a welcome home party thrown for Kat when she returned from Canada. Stav says it was love at first sight (“For her!”); Kat says it took Stav a while to figure out she was sending signals thanks to his lack of experience with women. “I nearly resorted to smoke signals!” Together 15 years and married for 10, the couple now have a daughter, three-year-old Lorelei. Stav’s tip for a long-lasting relationship is “to treat your loved one like you would a flatmate; clean up your plates and don’t leave towels on the floor.” Choosing to ignore Stav’s exaggeration of her bed-hogging ways, Kat says Stav’s most romantic moment was “shaking as he proposed to me – it made me feel like the most beautiful and important woman in the world.” Their go-to date night involves eating shabu-shabu (a Japanese dish featuring thinly sliced beef), and they keep the spark alive with flowers, gifts, lots of “I love you”s, and they both laugh as Stav mentions they “just put in a red room downstairs.” What is Stav’s one piece of relationship advice? “Happy wife, happy life – words to live by!” stylemagazines.com.au

ALL THE SINGLE LADIES...

BRUSH UP, WINE DOWN

BEING SINGLE ON Valentine’s Day can suck, even if you’re perfectly happy being single every other day of the year. Solution: ignore Valentine’s Day and celebrate Galentine’s Day instead, à la TV’s Parks and Recreation! On February 13, ditch your husbands, partners and couches and come together with your gal pals to celebrate how much you love and appreciate each other by drinking too much, partying too hard, singing emotional romantic ballads with your bestie and eating whatever you want. Remember: your mates love you more than you love your diet-breaking self. So forget feeling sad or alone this Valentine’s Day and spread some of that Galentine’s Day cheer instead! Ovaries before brovaries, ladies.

BRISBANE’S NEWEST SIP ‘n’ paint studio, Brush and Barrel, is now open in Paddington. Impress your sweetheart with an out-of-the-box date idea this Valentine’s Day, or get a bunch of friends together and BYO wine to paint the night away! If you’re no Michelangelo, don’t worry; no skills are needed in this step-by-step painting experience! So if you’re looking for the perfect place for your next hen’s night, birthday party or just a good, old-fashioned great night out, book an evening at Brush and Barrel today.

PLACED FOR SUCCESS Place’s Alex Rutherford has more than 15 years of experience in real estate as a high-performing lead agent. She chats to Style about what to expect in the Brisbane property market in 2016. What are your market predictions for 2016? Growth in Brisbane this year will focus on houses rather than apartments or units. It won’t be as significant as we’ve seen in the past year or two, but there are still a lot of buyers around so there’s no doubt that the market will remain solid. As long as properties are being marketed well, we will continue to see good prices being achieved. When it comes to selling a property, what are your top three tips for marketing? It’s incredibly important that homes are priced, presented and promoted well. Prices need to be aligned with what is happening in the market;

Alex Rutherford and Laura Crust.

IT’S ALL ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT AS MANY PEOPLE SEE THE PROPERTY AS POSSIBLE, WITH MARKETING ACROSS ALL PRINT AND DIGITAL MEDIUMS. otherwise they’ll simply sit unsold. On-trend professional styling is absolutely critical. In terms of promotion, it’s all about making sure that as many people see the property as possible, with marketing across all print and digital mediums. What’s on the cards this year for the Alex Rutherford team? Growth! The team now includes Laura Crust and Emily Lambert, both firstclass professionals with considerable experience in the industry. It was important to me to make sure that our clients are provided with a strong team,

and both Laura and Emily are real estate admin superstars who have really driven the team to the next level. What are you up to when you’re off duty? I’m never really off duty! Although, on Sundays I do enjoy time with my husband and two-anda-half-year-old. We visit the organic markets, go swimming at the local pool and usually round out the day with a home-cooked family meal. It leaves me recharged for the busy week ahead! TAKE A RISK He’s learnt a thing or two from managing a $5 billion, 65,000 staff mining company. Now, after 35 years in the construction industry, former global boss Andy Greig has decided to put his own money where his mouth is. BRISBANE-BASED ANDY GREIG, 59, retired in May last year. But he wasn’t ready for a life of bingo and aqua aerobics. Instead, Andy dove into a new venture: angel investment company ACAC Innovation. If the term “angel investor” is unfamiliar, cast your mind back to TV’s Shark Tank. Remember people wandering in with great ideas and no idea how to start? Like the Sharks, ACAC Innovation offers start-up, development, advice, mentoring, and even a place for new entrepreneurs to work. Andy says his latest career move has been deeply satisfying. “I had people mentor, help, teach, encourage, forgive and advise me. Later in my career, I was able to do the same with young people coming through,” he says. ACAC Innovation candidates must have a unique

22

offering with potential to make significant returns and be fully dedicated to their business idea. “I expect to make a very healthy return for the risk I’m taking,” says Andy, “but at the same time I’m able to look people in the eye who have great excitement and energy and give them a hand.” ACAC Innovation has already invested in multiple companies such as Tooletries (a functional bathroom and travel accessory company), The Travel Bra (a travel product for females to use instead of handbags or money belts), and childsafety device the TicTocTrack watch. “You don’t invest in products; you invest in people. It’s about picking the right people who have passion and a solid idea,” he says of his decision-making process. “The aim is to invest in Queenslanders that will generate employment, economic returns and

YOU DON’T INVEST IN PRODUCTS; YOU INVEST IN PEOPLE. IT’S ABOUT PICKING THE RIGHT PEOPLE WHO HAVE PASSION AND A SOLID IDEA. operate in a sustainable way.” When it comes to gambling big money, Andy has a fair idea on how to place his bets, drawing on his experience from his former corporate life. “When I look at my previous construction career, it was all about picking the right people, in the right place at the right time, to win the project and execute it. When I look at this business, it’s the same concept; it’s investing in the right people, with the right ideas to execute it’. I’m thrilled to be a member of the company; they are innovative in marketing and technology but they always focus on community and customer service. My team is honoured to have been named a finalist in the Real Estate Industry of Queensland’s Awards of Excellence for both Residential Real Estate Agent of the Year and the Community Support Award category. What are your goals for 2016? I finished 2015 as the most recommended and the highest-selling agent in both Kelvin Grove and Herston and plan to continue delivering that same great service in those areas as well as expanding into Red Hill, Paddington and Ashgrove to assist people buying and selling in those areas too. I’m continuing my work with the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital fundraising for perinatal research and neonatal care for premature babies. I will also host the Harcourts Foundation Butterfly Ball again this year. We are looking forward to raising more money and awareness for these great causes. What has the new year brought to the

Brisbane real estate market? January was jam-packed. We started the year with a number of new properties up for sale and I had over $4 million worth of property go under contract during the first two weeks of the year alone. This is a strong indicator of buyer confidence in Brisbane’s inner-city suburbs. What are some things Style readers wouldn’t know about you? Every year I choose to study something new and different. One of my recent studies has been undertaking a yoga teacher training qualification through the awesome My Health Yoga studio. What are three of your favourite things? My six-year-old Pugalier, Pnau – she’s always happy to see me! Living in Brisbane – this city has giving me fabulous friends, a wonderful work environment and so many opportunities! Super grateful. My family – we are incredibly close. I have my father’s 60th Bbrthday this month; we think he looks like Tom Selleck so we’re having a “Selleckbration”! Can’t wait! RON YAP | 40 | PRIMETIME MARKETING CEO OF AUSTRALIA-CHINA INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Business strategist and all-round powerhouse Ron Yap lets us in on his personal style. How would you describe your style? Unassuming but with a dash of Bond’s “shaken not stirred.” When did you start becoming aware of fashion? When I was 12, I started working overseas in retail, dressing up mannequins. This showed me the world of fashion. How do you dress for work? Smart casual. Always a denim bottom and business shirt top unless I’m meeting VIPs. What’s your go-to item? Definitely my watch. Without it,

I feel like I have left something behind. Time is money, right? Any fashion faux pas? Back some 15 years, I wore a business shirt, jeans and flipflops. Not good at all. Your best budget buy? Casual wear you get in Asia – $3 shorts and shirts. Your favourite Brisbane men’s store? Ubermen is my flavour of the season. I am a big supporter of local fashion. Do you prefer… Boxers or briefs? Definitely briefs. It’s a tie between

Calvin Klein and Bonds. Short back and sides or a little scruffy? Short back and sides and a bit messy on top. Where can we find you… On a Saturday night? Down town Brisbane meeting new people and faces. On a Sunday morning? Having breakfast with the kids and taking a nice stroll around town, enjoying what Brisbane has to offer. On your next holiday? Definitely Europe. Going to see my sister in Frankfurt!

ARTS

IF THE SHOE FITS The Australian Ballet’s Amber Scott speaks to Brittney Deguara about living her very own fairytale as she stars in Cinderella.

SINCE THE AGE of 17, Amber Scott has been working hard within The Australian Ballet to make all her dreams come true. Over the years, she has added iconic roles to her repertoire, including The Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty and Odette in Swan Lake. Now, Amber is preparing to once again slip on the iconic glass slippers and bring Cinderella to life. Unlike any Cinderella production performed before, choreographer Alexei Ratmansky’s show uses significant upper body movement, constant flow and classical technique, which pushes the limits of the dancers. The non-stop production tells the much-loved story through beautiful shapes and mime, which Amber says is “quite real and very different.” “You’re never pausing in a position and holding it stylemagazines.com.au

for too long; there’s always something going on for the audience to watch,” Amber says. She describes working with Ratmansky as both a challenge and a pleasure. Since learning the production in 2013, Scott and the cast have “worked hard with him to create the ballet and learn his particular style.” “The ballet masters remind the cast of key messages he wanted to maximise,” Amber says. “We just all try to stay true to what he really wanted and try to develop a bit more each season.” Years may have passed since Amber first learned the stunning choreography, but she still remembers the gruelling effort she put in to perfect her performance. “I have a lot of memories of puffing and sweating and sometimes tears to get to the point of performing it on stage,” Amber say. “But it was all

worth it because it’s such a beautiful production.” Now entering her 16th year with the Australian Ballet, Amber has a fulfilling season ahead. After recovering from an injury last year, she is more than ready to take up the challenge of bringing this fairytale to the Brisbane stage. The Australian Ballet’s Cinderella comes to Brisbane after sell-out seasons in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Witness the beauty and poise of this production at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre from February 19 to 24. WWW.QPAC.COM.AU

You’ll get a standout display combining clever use of space with ingenious design concepts. This added wow factor can really capture the attention of your target market. With a plethora of concepts, custom designs and styled items to place your product or service in the best light, visual merchandising may just be the competitive edge you need.

SKINCARE IS SOMETHING that needs to be addressed throughout our whole lives, even in our early 20s. Here are a few tips to keep your skin’s youthful appearance: • Wear sunscreen. The sun is a surefire way to speed up the aging process, making it skin’s arch nemesis. Avoid sun damage with SPF 30 sunscreen every day to keep yourself looking and feeling younger. • Drink red wine (in moderation). Did you know that red wine has powerful antioxidants? Resveratrol will help fight the aging process while lowering your odds of getting cancer and a few types of heart diseases. • Eat clean and colourful. Another great way to combat the aging process is to eat as healthy as possible. Ditch the oily fast food for good and get some colourful vegetables on your plate. There’s a direct link between antioxidants and fewer wrinkles, with zinc, beta-Carotene and vitamin C helping to prevent and slow down macular degeneration.

HERE AT POCO Posy, we love February, the month of lovers! In 18th Century England, lovers expressed their love for one another by gifting flowers, confectionery and calligraphy cards. This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday – the most relaxing day of the week! Here are some affordable gift ideas that will hit the mark with your loved one: • A relaxing, romantic picnic at New Farm Park • A love letter presented in a glass bottle • A planner with a love note for each week • A beach trip with a lunch of fish and chips • A candlelit dinner at home • Flowers (of course!) Poco Posy will be delivering flowers for the entire Valentine’s Day weekend, right up until Sunday, February 14. So you have plenty of time to make your special someone feel love! THE HONEYMOON GUIDE

WATER OR SOLVENT?

A KEY PART of planning your honeymoon or destination wedding is to investigate the ideal time of year to visit your dream destination. January: Ski the beautiful Canadian snow fields. February: Sip on rum cocktails in Jamaica. March: Tango with wine-tasting in Buenos Aires. April: Explore the beautiful islands of Hawaii. May: Unwind in the beautiful tropical Maldives. June: Drive the Chianti region in Tuscany. July: Zip by endless fields of lavender and sunflowers in Provence, France. August: Scuba diving, natural wonders and shopping await you in Aruba. September: Hike ancient ruins and soak in Santorini’s beautiful caldera view. October: Take a safari tour in the Serengeti. November: Celebrate Hanal Pixán with amazing off-season all-inclusive deals for Cancun. VARNISHED OR STAINED timber can instantly improve the look of your home. Being semitransparent, varnished or stained timber needs more attention than paint, but regular maintenance can extend the life of the coating and the underlying timber. Water-based or solvent-based (oil) products can be used when coating timber. Water-based products are generally more affordable and may have a greater life expectancy; however, the drawbacks include visible strokes of the applicator. Additionally, failure to maintain will require complete removal of all coatings. Those looking for a high-end finish may prefer solvent-based, which has greater self-levelling properties and gloss level. Damaged areas on solvent-based products are usually able to be feathered out, significantly reducing maintenance or restoration costs. Surface inspections should occur every six to 12 months. The surface should be kept clean at all times, and exposure to the sun should be as limited as possible.

MANY ECONOMISTS AND investors often refer to maximising the “effortless advantage” of residential property investment. In layman’s terms, it’s a way for owners to capitalise on land value through improvements in public infrastructure, such as a new transport network. This key factor is just one reason why Brisbane represents an appealing market for property investment. This city’s strong vision for the future includes a commitment to invest in infrastructure that will continue to transform the city. Brisbane Marketing says $11.5 billion has been invested in Brisbane infrastructure since 2010. Brisbane is also set to be a key beneficiary of the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program that will deliver $18.1 billion in transport infrastructure across local, state and national networks over the next four years. In order to maximise the “effortless advantage”, your buying strategy should identify existing and proposed future infrastructure projects and boast close proximity to amenities and transport.

WHO DEFINES YOUR SUCCESS?

CUT YOUR CREDIT CARD DEBT

LADIES, POP THE QUESTION

EVERYONE WANTS TO be successful. That’s just logical; who would want to be a failure? But ask people what success looks like and you will get some very different answers. It’s enough to make you wonder who actually defines success for us. Did we learn about it while growing up? Does it involve high salaries, world travel and freedom? Or is it a 40-year career spent with one employer? As I look around the coaching and consulting spheres, I’ve noticed that often the programs involve a preconceived definition of success and I know that can’t suit everyone. True success is whatever makes you happy and gives you the life you want. If success to you means creating a happy family life and flexible lifestyle, who cares if it doesn’t involve high salaries? If climbing the corporate ladder enriches your life, why should you stop that to adhere to someone else’s expectations? Don’t let anyone else tell you what success looks or feels like. Trust your own judgement, always, and pursue your own dream.

CHRISTMAS IS LONG over, so why are you still feeling the financial pinch? It’s not an uncommon problem; while a credit card sounds like a great solution to all your problems, it can do more harm than good. Most people don’t realise that making minimum repayments on their $2000 spend could cost $5186 in interest over a 20-year period. Here are a few tips for dealing with your credit card debt: Stop the leak. Stop charging things to your credit card immediately and commit to paying if off ASAP. Look for interest-free options (beware the fine print!), and if the situation is beyond your budget, consider consolidating your debts. Cut your expenses. Remember: short-term pain for long-term gain. Look for better deals and stick to a budget. If you are struggling with multiple debts and meeting all of your payments on time, it sounds like it’s time to get help. You can either ask for hardship or engage a professional debt negotiator for a better deal on your behalf.

IT’S SOMETHING THAT only happens once every four years... and no, we’re not just talking about getting an extra day in February. According to Irish legend, St Brigid was tired of men taking so long to ask women for their hand in marriage. She struck a deal with St Patrick, allowing women to propose to men on a specific date – one that only occurred once every four years: February 29. These days, it’s still the societal norm for men to plan the surprise proposal. Some people have forgotten all about St Brigid’s arrangement, while others have chosen to extend the time frame and include the entirety of the leap year in their proposal plans. Whether a woman chooses to keep with tradition and propose on February 29 or pop the question at any time during a leap year, all the men out there who have been dragging their feet should keep their eyes open! If getting engaged was one of your goals for 2016, it just might turn into a race to see who can pop the question first.

BE A SPONGE, LIKE BOB

A HABIT FOR SUCCESS

CLUSTER HEADACHES?

ONE OF THE most important aspects of working in a creative industry is inspiration. Whether it’s creating a new brand or producing an event, it’s the key to delivering surprise and wow factor. Inspiration comes from many sources. This year, PDPR is travelling to New York, Japan and Europe to visit local restaurants, iconic department stores and little-known museums. Dining out is always a great source of inspiration. Whether it’s a new cuisine, menu design, serving style or décor, we study every element – especially the wine list! Already we’ve noticed whisky bars and craft gin distilleries making their mark. Finally, don’t forget Instagram: this social media juggernaut offers a world of beautiful, insightful and innovative ideas for every industry. Inspiration can be fickle, so the best way to ensure it hits is to lead a culturally-rich existence and be a sponge. By soaking up everything you find insightful, engaging and stimulating, you’ll be better placed to constantly deliver new and exciting things in your work and personal life.

AS WE MOVE into the second month of the year and time starts to get away from us, many New Year’s resolutions have become a distant memory. So this is a timely reminder to bring our goals back into focus. According to psychologists, people who successfully form habits have one trait in common: the ability to effectively say no. By this, they mean that a person is able to articulate and reinforce the behaviours that they feel fit into their values and beliefs. The simple act of saying no to something helps you to identify what you truly want and prevent bad habits from creeping back in. Think back to your resolution: what did you want to achieve? When presented with an opportunity, you need to reflect on whether this supports the habit you’re trying to form. If not, say no! So next time you say yes to something, think about the implications. Are you really just saying no to yourself and putting off fulfilling your ultimate resolution?

IF YOU SUFFER from cluster headaches, it will come as no surprise that they’re more excruciating and debilitating than migraines. Cluster headaches affect one to two people out of every 1000 and are five to six times more common in men. Pain is excruciating, lasts between 30 to 60 minutes and can occur up to eight times a day during a bad cluster. The pain. Females report that the pain is worse than childbirth. Pain can be described as if a hot iron pick is being pierced through one eye. That eye can become red and watery, and the eyelid becomes swollen and droopy. The nose can also become congested or watery. Triggers. Alcohol, strong smell (for example, perfume, bleach and petrol), exercise or becoming overheated and smoking. Treatment. Oxygen therapy and medication can ease the pain during an attack. We recommend discussing your symptoms with our headache clinicians to find out what the best solution is to manage your headaches.

I DO, I DO, I DO. MAKING A MASTERPIECE Jack Sullivan, the Brisbane-born Romeo of bridal design, takes Style behind the scenes to reveal the marriage of dreams and dedication required to create an exquisite gown for every blushing bride. CRAFTING THE PERFECT wedding dress is no easy feat. Just like any relationship, it is a complicated and intricate journey filled with hard work, commitment and, of course, love. The process begins with an idea, the etchings of a pen and paper sketch, and a life-size pattern. Fabric, volume, detail and texture are all carefully considered to give each gown an exquisite, unique character. Seamstresses work tirelessly for hundreds of hours to bring the gown to life by embroidering, embellishing and adorning the fabric. Only then can they

begin to assemble the gown. With a fitting, the gown is tailored to perfectly complement the bride’s figure and the creation is complete: all that’s left is for the gown to accompany the bride down the aisle and make her feel fabulous on her special day. Jack Sullivan became familiar with the design journey at a young age; Brisbane-born and -bred, he is the son of award-winning bridal designer Wendy Sullivan, who began designing under the Airs and Graces label. While Jack’s interests initially lay in the financial side of his mother’s business, he soon discovered he had a knack for design when one of his sketches was discovered and featured on the cover of Queensland Brides Magazine. Under his mother’s guidance, Jack studied the art of wedding dress design for several years. With an irrepressible sense of humour and playful spirit apparent in all aspects of his work, Jack is not just your typical bridal designer. Each of Jack’s pieces perfectly embodies his own unique style: a combination of old-fashioned elegance and modern-day playfulness. Based in Brisbane’s buzzing West End, Jack Sullivan Bridal has firmly established itself as one of Brisbane’s great design icons, with gowns now stocked locally, nationally and internationally. Jack’s new designs (pictured) showcase the best of this season’s bridal trends with the inclusion of French and Italian inspired Guipure lace and fine tulle. Recently celebrating its fourth anniversary, Jack Sullivan Bridal continues to make dreams come true for beautiful brides all around the world. THE FLOWER OF LOVE

HISTORIC ELEGANCE

BOUQUET BOUTIQUE’S GERALDINE Hore says when it comes to gifting flowers to that special someone, no matter what the occasion, it’s best to choose seasonal flowers. Fabulous in-season February florals include roses, lisianthuses, cluster roses, tulips, dahlias, lilies, hydrangeas and orchids. Make flowers last longer during the warmer months by unwrapping bouquets to place them in fresh water, changing it regularly; if your flowers arrived in green foam, remember to water the foam every few days to maintain moisture. Recutting the stems and storing flowers in a cool space will allow you to enjoy your beautiful gift for as long as possible!

UNIQUE, UNMATCHED AND unforgettable: celebrate your wedding at one of Brisbane’s most sought-after function rooms. The magnificent architecture of Customs House makes for a stunning wedding reception venue, with the Brisbane River providing a picture-perfect backdrop. Customs House will ensure that your wedding reception is the icing on the cake of a glorious day with its years of experience, great food, quality service and attention to detail. inspired her to create the brand. With a double degree in public relations and journalism, Natasha knows a thing or two about steadfastly establishing her simple, elegant and timeless brand in an industry known for following the latest trends. “I am not a huge trend-follower myself; I try not to think about it when I design because I love to challenge people with new ideas.” Inspiration for Natasha’s designs comes straight from her own imagination, brought to life by a childhood spent admiring the family business. As well as designing original pieces, Natasha takes reference from the jewellery her mother created in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

“I have revived many of her old designs, and brought to life sketches that never came to be.” As a new business owner, Natasha credits the successful running of her brand to a good night’s sleep and meditation. The most difficult part? “Time management,” Natasha laughs. With this said, you’ll often find Natasha in her staple outfit of Tod’s loafers, jeans and a turtleneck, working alongside her family and friends to bring her designs to life – her favourite part of the Natasha Schweitzer journey thus far.

IN JUST OVER a year, bespoke pieces from Natasha Schweitzer – designed and handcrafted in Australia – have graced the cover of Elle, made an appearance in Vogue and been spotted in outfits donned by Nadia Fairfax and Margaret Zhang. Born and raised in Brisbane, 24-year-old Natasha Chipman is the modern-day creative behind this premium jewellery brand. Though she grew up watching her mother, Marion Schweitzer, design and create exquisite pieces, Natasha never planned to carve out a career in the industry. “I started designing pieces for myself and suddenly people started to notice,” says Natasha. It was this positive response that

The authentic nature of the brand has seen it become a local, national and international success with almost 50 per cent of sales shipped internationally. “It’s high-fives all around when I receive an email from a customer who loves their new swimsuit,” says Kate, who has been blown away by the response and positive feedback that TCOS has received. Kate has some big goals in mind for this year, and TCOS is ready for the ride.

BREAKING INTO THE fashion industry is no easy feat, but local swimwear designer Kate Webster saw a gap in the market and jumped to fill it. After walking into a swimwear store to find a wall of lycra push-up bras, she decided to take action. “It really caught me by surprise and it got me thinking, ‘What message are we giving young women?’” Kate says. In that moment, The Call of Summer (TCOS) was born, giving women with smaller cup sizes the option to feel comfortable and natural at the beach. Now entering its second year, TCOS has released a new collection: Water x Colour. Seeing the popularity of watercolour in typography, Kate decided to incorporate this in her

DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE Visitors are invited to discover the St Margaret’s difference and further explore what makes this day and boarding school so unique. THE PARENT OF a recent year 12 graduate praised St Margaret’s as being “grounded, more personal and more realistic”. St Margaret’s small size (825 students from pre-prep to year 12) and capped classroom numbers allow us to know and nurture each child and maintain a personalised approach to their learning. In the words of another parent, this is “a local school with a global outlook”. Our year 10 global exchange program and significant Australian and international boarding population bring a genuine and enriching diversity to our community. St Margaret’s has educated many academic

high-achievers and those with elite aspirations in sport and the performing arts. These students can benefit from our Flyers Program, which extends our scholars and offers flexibility around the intense training and rehearsal schedules of athletes and artists. Our Supervised Study Sessions program further supports students, allowing them to stay at school after hours and complete their homework under the supervision of tutors before being

CIRCULATION BOOSTING!

GET YOUR FLIRT ON!

RESURFACE AND REJUVENATE

WE ALL KNOW that the heart pumps blood into the tissues via arteries. But did you know that, if you have varicose veins, all the de-oxygenated blood and other waste products destined for the heart could be leaking back into the tissues? This could result in long-term tissue damage to your lower legs, as well as risk of varicose leg ulcers later in life. People with venous disease and varicose veins often find that elevating their legs at the end of the day will help relieve swollen feet and ankles and alleviate the feeling of tired and aching legs. There are many medications marketed as circulation boosters, such as medical graduated compression stockings, which have evidencebased medicine supporting their use to improve leg vein circulation and improve leg vein health. But it’s important to remember that these methods only provide temporary relief rather than preventing long-term tissue damage. An ultrasound investigation can establish if your aching or swollen legs are a result of poor venous circulation.

THE ART OF face reading can reveal a lot about a person, with certain facial features giving subtle hints about secrets and desires. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, this could make a big difference in your love life! For a long time, eyelashes have played a role in creating temptation, flirtation and seduction. Studies show that longer eyelashes are generally associated with a gentle, more romantic, and calm individual. On the other hand, full and neatly-shaped eyebrows are commonly associated with good relationships and passionate love. Here at The Brow Bar, we’re all for eyelashes and eyebrows that make you look and feel great while positively reflecting your lifestyle. With our bespoke eyebrows and eyelashes, you could increase the allure and sensuality in your life this Valentine’s Day. Book an appointment with one of our Arch Angels to start discovering your inner flirtation and find that spark you didn’t even know you were missing!

IT CAN START when you’re just 20 years old: skin cells begin to turn over at a slower rate, causing skin to appear duller and thinner. In addition, the skin structures responsible for keeping your skin firm (collagen and elastin), relax and become less elastic. This can cause wrinkles, coupled with saggy, less-radiant skin. There are a number of ways we can treat this. One of these is fractional rejuvenation and resurfacing. It’s an effective procedure that has been proven over the years to vastly improve the appearance of ageing skin, so you can look and feel younger. At Cosmetic Image Clinics, we use Fractora, a matrix of micro-pins that resurface the skin and provide superior results with minimal patient downtime. Radio frequency energy heats the skin in a controlled way to remodel deep collagen and improve the appearance of wrinkles. With the skin resurfaced, you’ll notice an improvement in skin tone and texture for a more radiant appearance. Book an appointment today and see why everyone is raving about Fractora!

REMEMBER THE OLD SCHOOL DAZE

HOW TO REACH YOUR GOALS

OFFICE-FRIENDLY FASHION

AT SCHOOL, WE learn about the world, ourselves and relationships, and develop what we assume will be lifelong friendships. But over the years, as we move away from our hometown for study, work and travel, we can lose contact with our schoolmates. A school reunion might be the first time we see those friends in years. For some, the words “school reunion” are a source of terror. For others, like me, the term evokes wistful nostalgia and contemplative sentimentality! My Bundaberg school days were enjoyable, marked with high jinks rather than dedicated studies. If you want to reconnect with those from your childhood and adolescence, consider organising a reunion of your own rather than waiting for the next milestone. Social media makes it easy to find people and spread the word. Meeting at a pub or café is an easy option; just grab some photos and yearbooks to prompt the storytelling and old memories. I’ve turned my high school reunion into an annual event!

ARE YOU FINDING it difficult to stick to those New Year’s resolutions? If your dedication to your health or saving for that trip of a lifetime is lacking, here are some tips to help you get back on track. Create a 10-year vision. How do you want to live your life in the long-term? Visual motivation is important: create a mood board and place it where you’ll see it every day. Chart the milestones. One year, two years, five years... overnight success is a myth, so be realistic about the steps you need to take to reach your ultimate goals. List the things you need to do to get there. Break it down into categories to make it easier: financial, educational, spiritual, emotional, and physical. Find your stepping stones. Choose one thing from each category above and try to achieve it in 12 months, reviewing your progress regularly to see how you’re going. Tell people about your plans. Ask your friends and family to check in with you regularly!

UNTIL RECENTLY, WHEN people asked me about appropriate workwear for men, I would have said a suit and tie. These days, however, a sports jacket with a chino or jean isn’t just for the “creative types”. With many corporate companies becoming increasingly accepting of versatile fashion in the office, men are now free to show more of their personal style. But greater flexibility doesn’t mean that all the rules go out the window. When dressing for the office, it’s important to remember some of the dos and don’ts in 2016: • When mixing patterns, ensure they are the same size. • If you have a short hem, it’s acceptable to forgo socks. • The cuff has to be tapered. • A sports jacket should cover your seat but shouldn’t be as long as your suit jacket. • A natural shoulder is best; minimal or no shoulder padding creates a more relaxed look. • Be open to different patterns.

BROOKLYN BRIDE PACKAGES

BRIDAL BEAUTY Brooke Jesberg of Brooklyn Beauty Bar dishes out some expert beauty tips for the big day. How does a bride get beautiful dewy skin? She needs to start three months prior to the wedding with regular facials and peels. Our Herbal Aktiv Peel is natural, twice as strong as microdermabrasion, and delivers amazing results. What about brows, lashes and nails? Start focusing on the framework of your face three months prior – that’s when eyebrow sculpting should commence. We recommend both threading and waxing for perfect brow shaping. Lash extensions are a godsend – no mascara needed, they last for weeks and still look perfect for the honeymoon. Remember to test lashes one month before the big day to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to glue or lashes! For glossy, chip-free fingernails and toenails, go for shellac. This will also last for the honeymoon! When should spray tan be applied? Always spray tan half a day after exfoliating and shaving; this will allow your skin to settle down. To ensure a perfectly-moisturised skin base, I recommend

INCLUDE THREE MONTHS OF SKINCARE AND EYEBROW SCULPTING PLUS LASH EXTENSIONS, SPRAY TAN AND SHELLAC NAILS FOR LESS THAN $450.

applying Sorbelene cream all over your body before your tan. It’s water-based so the tan will still penetrate the skin beautifully but you can say goodbye to alligator skin cells! Remember: tanning is at its best three showers prior to the wedding. This will ensure no excess tan is left on your skin and prevent discolouration on the gown. We have also developed a unique blending technique for a beautiful even look. What about wedding night preparations, if you get my drift? Oh yes, waxing pots definitely get a workout to whip away unwanted hair. For a more permanent solution, IPL is the way to go. Our machines have the latest technology with excellent results across the board, from blondes right through to darker skin tones. How much should brides budget for? We’ve just created some fantastic Brooklyn Bride packages which are amazing value. For three months of skincare and eyebrow sculpting, lash extensions, spray tan and long-lasting shellac on

fingernails and toenails just before the wedding, you’re looking at around $450 in total. Any other advice? Have fun! Beauty shouldn’t be a chore. THE WEIGH-IN Each year, new weight loss trends emerge. Bariatric surgery has started to gain popularity due to its medical background, but what does it do and is it right for you?

HAVING A STRUCTURED, BALANCED PLAN THAT IS TAILORED TO YOUR LIFESTYLE AND ENERGY NEEDS IS A SAFER, MORE EFFECTIVE WAY

BARIATRIC SURGERY INCLUDES a variety of medical procedures, all of which involve surgically making your stomach smaller to limit the amount of food you’re physically capable of consuming. Like many surgical procedures, these operations do entail some serious potential health risks. These can include excessive bleeding, infection, adverse reactions to anaesthesia and blood clots. Most importantly, neither the surgery itself nor the initial weight loss delivers a sustainable solution for long-term health. In fact, in many cases there is a limited impact on long-term weight loss. Will the surgery change your relationship with food? Will it uncover why food is a motivation or

FOOD+DRINK TAKE A BAO

MEET RICK Deputy Editor Christie Sutherland travels to Rick Shores, where Southeast Asia and the Australian coastline become one. THE MODERN ASIAN shared dining menu is described as predominantly Thai-based with influences drawn from India, Vietnam and Japan. Open for lunch and dinner, the share plate, bar snack and banquet options create a social atmosphere; like the food, this space was designed to be experienced and shared with those around you. Deep leathers, dark timbers and leafy greens with gold accents set the scene perfectly.

With fresh seafood and locally-sourced ingredients, it’s clear why this beachfront location was the perfect match for chefs Ben Bertei and Jake Pregnell. There’s a world of knowledge between the two, as well as experience in some of Australia’s best kitchens. My first trip to Rick Shores was filled with flavours and spices reminiscent of my recent overseas trips. Starting with the bar menu, we chose betel leaf, soft shell crab and apple slaw, the barbecue-roasted duck bao with plum and cucumber, and Rick’s fried bug roll with hot and sour slaw. The dishes kept coming: kingfish sashimi with avocado, white soy, ginger and horseradish; egg net salad with pork belly, cuttlefish, green mango,

Sheppard

Elle Raison chats to singer-songwriter Amy Sheppard about her travel must-haves, keeping fit on tour and her future music plans. HAVING CLOCKED UP over 70 flights in 2015, Brisbane band Sheppard is no stranger to security lines, tour buses and long-haul travel. After being on the road for so long, Amy Sheppard has learned to live out of a suitcase, sneak in workouts and perfected the fine art of packing only the essentials. If you could only take three things onboard in your hand luggage for a long haul flight, what would they be? I’m all about comfort so I would take a Peter Alexander eye mask, a Wild Fox Couture sweater and Bert’s Bees Cucumber and Sage Cleansing Towelettes. What are some things you can’t travel without? A cool pair of Nike Free sneakers that I can wear for a workout or with casual day clothes. And I never forget a pair of bathers; whether it is at the hotel pool, an exotic beach or a hidden waterfall, one of our favourite things to do in our downtime is to source a place to swim. My latest bikini is from Klams. You and your sister Emma manage to keep in shape even though you never seem to be in the one place for very long. Do you have a fitness routine while you’re travelling? We just try to do the best we can. Some days there is no possible way we can fit in a session but we commit to two sessions a week at the very least. We have been known to do workouts in our hotel room with the Seven Minute Workout app. Do you have any tips to help keep the travel kilos off? When travelling to different countries you (of course) want to taste all of the delicious foods that are on offer. I would recommend cutting portion sizes or sharing meals, and walking everywhere. What’s your favourite thing about travelling? I just love experiencing so many different cultures in a short amount of time. Even when we return to a country, it’s never the same experience twice. It keeps life thrilling. Do you have a favourite destination? If so, what do you love so much about it? My favourite destination so far would have to be Costa Brava in Spain. We were lucky enough to have a rare mid-tour stylemagazines.com.au

break there. We spent five days snorkelling, exploring and drinking sangria. What’s at the top of your travel bucket list? I would love to explore more of South America. So far I’ve made it to Peru and Rio de Janeiro but there is something so exotic and mystic about South America that keeps attracting me. What does 2016 have in store for Sheppard? In 2016 we are focusing on writing and recording our second album. We are taking the whole year to make sure it’s the very best it can possibly be. We want all album artwork, video clips ready to go also. It will be a very busy year behind the scenes. READ
