FROM THE

Q: What would your I PPQ plate say? MANAGEMENT

2016 SEEMS TO have been a year of people finding their voices in a modern and personal way – sometimes by just being the best version of themselves. This month, we explore the concept of absolute self-love. For some, February is a favourite month; for others, it’s a cliché-exposing time. Whoever you are and whatever you believe, take the opportunity to love and love big! (Page 14) Managing different elements of our lives can be challenging, and I often find that a glass of wine with a few friends lets you unwind and regain your balance. During a much-needed coastal break with family, I carved out a few hours each day to go for a walk, take a long swim, hike up a mountain, chase a waterfall or read in the hammock. I realised the importance of finding time to press reset on one’s own health and fitness, and to escape the whirlwind of daily life to clear some headspace. Ash Daniec from Barre Brisbane graces our cover in a timely manner showcasing how to achieve your dreams and love doing it. (Page 30) We live in a world with a strong focus on achievement and constant self-improvement. As a result, sometimes we can chase our dreams so relentlessly that we forget to just be. I definitely succumb to this mindset on a regular basis so this year I am going to try and relax, set some achievable goals and take a page out of the holiday book. I hope that this issue serves as a guide. Whatever else is going on in your world, remember that taking the time to look after yourself is always the right choice.

SHOW WHAT YOU LOVE Are you driven by style? It’s time to get personal and let your love do the talking. SUMMER IS THE season of love and February brings with it the opportunity to indulge our appetite for the things we love most. Last year, we saw a massive rise in the popularity of personalised items, and the customisation trend doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon. It’s a new form of luxury: everyday items from our phone cases to our pyjamas can be customised with our favourite slogan, our initials, or a meaningful message. Making something more personal has become the perfect way to stake a claim and prove our affection. But when it comes to the most personal emotion of all, how can you express it? How can you broadcast your love for all the world to see? This month, Personalised Plates Queensland is giving

you the chance to show off what you love the most with limited edition I Prestige Plates. The plates offer you the opportunity to create, give or own something individual that will immortalise what you really love. The I Plates come with a standard I and a heart symbol, with a customisable section of two to five alphanumeric characters available on a white or black background on either slimline or regular-size plates. The plates will only be available for a limited time (specifically in February 2017) but there is the option of a PPQ LayBy available for seven months. Is there a limit to your love?

LOVE ME

LIKE I DO This Valentine’s Day, celebrate the love of your life: yourself. By Sarah Taviani.

SOME PEOPLE SPEND all year talking about how much they love being single, how amazing it is to be on their own... and then Valentine’s Day comes along and that once-confident person slides into a temporary pit of regret and self-doubt. It’s natural to feel a bit left out when everyone is pairing off like they’re boarding Noah’s Ark but that doesn’t mean you have to bow to peer pressure. Flinging yourself into a relationship just to shield yourself from your relatives’ remarks about how you’re “still single” probably isn’t going to end well for anyone. You know they’re just going to start asking you when you’re getting married, right? Many people still have this strange notion that there’s only one linear way to progress in life: grow up, date people, get married, buy a house, have children. But that’s no longer considered the norm. Partnering with Deakin University, The Australian Unity Wellbeing Index released a report entitled What Makes Us Happy? The most recent version of the report, published in 2015, outlines a concept called the “golden triangle of happiness”, which is comprised of three core elements: strong personal relationships, financial control, and a sense of purpose. But the report stresses that life is not just about romance and riches. According to findings in What Makes Us Happy?, “The relationship doesn’t have to be a romantic one, but closeness and support is the key.” That support could come from one person, or it could come from multiple friends and family members. At

the end of the day, all anyone really needs is to be reminded that they “are loved and valued”. What Makes Us Happy? also establishes that “people can achieve normal levels of wellbeing even with low income, so long as they feel in control of how they spend it.” Earning six figures won’t necessarily make you happy, however much that notion has been ingrained in us. You just need to be comfortable with your financial situation. And, like being in a relationship, buying a house won’t make you an adult. If renting is a better option for your lifestyle, why change? Entering into arrangements that aren’t financially feasible just to tick off some arbitrary box is ridiculous. And then there’s the question of children. Some people are not emotionally, financially or psychologically ready to be responsible for a child, but they decide to start a family because it seems like the next logical step in life. Just stop. Think about what you want. Not just from your love life; think about your career and personal goals, and what would make you feel fulfilled. According to What Makes Us Happy?, women’s wellbeing is much the same whether or not they have children, as “women seem able to more successfully maintain social connections in other areas of their lives beyond the family unit”. If you honestly do not feel the drive to spend your life with someone, that’s OK. If you definitely

don’t want to raise a child, that’s OK too. Better than OK – you don’t need anyone else to give your life a stamp of approval. Some people prefer to cultivate platonic friendships rather than romantic interests. Some people are so genuinely happy with their own company that they don’t need someone else in their life every day of the week. Self-love isn’t selfish. It’s an incredible achievement. And instead of shaming people who prefer to be alone, we should be learning from them. They truly know themselves and what they want in life. So stop worrying about your plans for Valentine’s Day. It’s not the only day of the year you can show someone that you love and appreciate them (romantically or otherwise). Screw your courage to the sticking place and ignore the people who say, “Oh, that’s OK. You’ll find someone” when they discover you’re single. You’re not a jigsaw puzzle with a piece missing, or one half of a whole, or any other metaphor people use when they decide to settle down. If you love yourself, you’re never going to be alone. Through all the bad dates, breakups and terrible Tinder matches, you’ve always been there for you. Now buy yourself chocolate and flowers on February 14 (if you want) and ride off into the sunset like the champion you are. READ MORE ONLINE

WAGE WARS Need to negotiate your salary? Here’s how, writes Sarah Taviani. NEWSFLASH: A SIX-FIGURE salary isn’t going to make you happy. Well, it might. But it’s not going to solve all your problems because, just like the saying goes, money can’t buy happiness. Before you decide that money is the sole source of your work-related problems, ask yourself whether you would actually be happy in your current role with a pay increase. Do you like the environment you’re in and the people you’re working with? Do you get a sense of accomplishment after a full day of work? If you come to the conclusion that you’re overworked and undervalued, it might be time to negotiate a fair pay rise with your employer. It’s a daunting prospect but there are some ways you can take the stress out of the process. Before you even request a meeting, you need to prepare for the conversation. Gather some 14

statistics or information about your performance and have these on hand to validate your proposal. Next, write out a list of talking points and questions. Take this list into the meeting with you and ensure that you have notes or answers for every single question before you leave. Outline any plans you have for the future and how you see yourself and the company progressing. Mention any roles that you would like to work towards, or areas that could be improved in your own department (and how) to show that you’re thinking about the business as a whole, not just your personal journey. Mention any job-specific training that you feel would be beneficial. Many companies are willing to pay for professional development courses or contribute to university fees if your enrolment in a course could have a direct positive

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO NEGOTIATE? HAVE A CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT FIGURES YOU WOULD ACCEPT OR REJECT. impact on their company. Above all, know your worth. Spend some time researching similar jobs with other companies in your area and attempt to ascertain how much someone with your responsibilities and experience would be paid. Once you have a specific salary in mind, think about how much you would be willing to negotiate, and have a clear idea of what figures you would accept or reject. Now set up the meeting and get to it! READ MORE ONLINE

WHETHER YOU’RE BUYING your first property or looking to purchase your next home, there are a few key questions to ask. Buying a property requires a lot of patience, consideration, planning, research, and careful budgeting. That’s where the Commonwealth Bank Flagship Branch’s Lending Specialists can help. The Lending Specialists have local market knowledge and access to property insight reports, which can make finding, buying and owning your home faster and easier. They are happy to answer all of your questions about the home-buying process. Their expertise will make each step easy to approach and understand, and they can even assist in finding the best home loan for your changing lifestyle.

If you’re looking to buy or build your first property, you may be eligible for the First Home Owner Grant, a government scheme introduced in 2000 to offset the effect of GST on buying or building your own home. Some states and territories have additional grants for first home buyers who purchase or build a home, especially in regional areas. The Commbank Lending Specialists can help you apply for grants and any other benefits for which you are eligible when you apply for a home loan. If you’re already in the market and looking to purchase another property, knowing what to expect can make things easier. However, if you’re selling your current home at the same time there are a few extra steps to

consider, such as using the equity in your current home, understanding the costs, and working out what you can really afford. If you’re unsure where to start in your property search, make your first stop a meeting with an experienced Lending Specialist at the Commonwealth Bank Flagship Branch. They can even introduce you to the CommBank Property app, which offers information on property affordability, lifestyle suitability, and access to the property’s estimated market price, as well as property articles, tools, tips and sold data so you’re in the know. EMBRACING THE SIDE HUSTLE Saving for that overseas getaway? Emmy-Lou McKean explains why the side hustle could work for you. IF ANYTHING CAN be said about Millennials, it’s that we are quite a thrifty bunch. As well as being the largest generation, we’ve been referred to as the most entrepreneurial. But without a steady income or a great savings account, jumping ship to kickstart your dream job could prove challenging. Enter the side hustle: a project you have in addition to your full-time job. It will come as no surprise that the typical side hustle has transformed from the 7am market stall to the quick-fix app-oriented business on the side. We are a tech-obsessed generation, after all. Here’s how to find what side hustle is right for you: What best describes you? a) Thoughtful, caring, hopeful b) Hard-working, thrifty, creative c) Optimistic, productive, motivated

What do you do on a typical weekend? a) Hang out at home and relax b) Blow off some steam with a wine c) Go exploring and find new hotspots Why do you need a side hustle? a) Daily work is uninspiring b) After those dollar-dollar bills, y’all! c) Looking to test the waters of my dream job Mostly As: Pet-sitting Websites such as pawshake.com.au can connect you with pet owners in search of a sitter. Set your price for walks, doggy day care and/or overnight stays and you could soon be making up to $250 in a single weekend!

Mostly Bs: Dropshipper You get to be the middleman with all the power: store products for a retailer and when customers make a purchase, you send it on to them. Connect with a dropshipping supplier from a site such as dropshipaustralia.com.au and start building your online business. You’ll be making a profit from your lounge room in no time. Mostly Cs: You do you Do you have a grand idea? While you’ve got the stability of employment, start putting away some money to make your dream a reality. There might be a strict budget involved but save enough and your side hustle could become your full-time gig.

SHEPPARD LEADS AUSTRALIAN POP In the wake of Sheppard’s new single We Belong, Amy Sheppard spoke to Caitlyn Spanner about international success, onstage style and sticking to your guns. What were you all doing before you started Sheppard, and how did the band come together? Before the band, Emma was in high school contemplating a career in fashion, George was an actor living in Sydney and the rest of us were working hard to make some sort of living out of music. We realised we could probably do this as a career when George was back in Brisbane on holidays from drama school and decided to help me with a music assignment. We started singing harmonies on that song and our voices blended really well together, so we decided to give it a shot! We were a duo for some time, until we realised we needed to put a full band together. What sort of music do you all listen to? What inspires you? We all have very different tastes but a band we are inspired by is Coldplay. The way

they write and the way their live shows [captivate] their audiences is something to be admired. We also listen to a lot of music from the ’60s and ’70s. We thoroughly enjoy raw music and rich harmonies. Tell me about your new single, We Belong. We Belong was one of the first songs we wrote in LA. We were super excited to be there and the studio we were in was top-notch. We had party vibes running through us and I think that’s where the whole vibe came from. We were super excited to get new music out after Geronimo and we can’t wait for the world to hear more of what we’ve got in the tank. What’s it like working with your family members? We actually work really well together. It’s nice to be able to trust the people you work with. That being said, we do fight on occasion,

OFF ALL HAIR PACKAGES

but it’s mostly over in a second and we move on. Typical siblings! Michael, Jay and Dean are practically family too. We have all become quite close over the last few years. You and Emma have killer style! What do you look for in an onstage or film clip outfit? Do you have help from a stylist? Thank you! We usually style ourselves but we do get help for video clips and photo shoots. For onstage outfits we usually look for pants, shorts or jumpsuits – something we can move around in comfortably. We often look for upcoming designers and draw inspiration from the ’60s and ’70s. Cher is queen. In a recent interview, you mentioned you’ve “copped sh*t” in the past for being a pop band. What happened and how have you dealt with it? As an up-and-coming band, there was a popular belief in Australia that “commercial music” equals “sh*t music” and we felt judged for the kind of music we made, which wasn’t fun. We always found it quite unfair to [put] all pop music into the one basket. But we stuck to our guns and didn’t change our style to please anybody. It was an important lesson: never change who you are or what you believe in – no matter how much flak you might get for it. What was it like to have your new single chosen as the main theme song for the 2017 My Kitchen Rules promos? It was a pleasant surprise! This was a huge deal to us and we are so grateful that our music was chosen to help promote one of Australia’s biggest TV shows. What’s next for Sheppard? We have completed our second album so we are currently rehearsing to go on tour again. We want our fans to have a new experience when they come to see us perform again. This year you can most definitely expect new music and lots of touring from us. READ MORE ONLINE

EARLY-LEARNING URBAN OASIS The CBD isn’t just a place where you trek to work. It’s somewhere your children can learn through play and start to develop social skills. FLOOR-TO-CEILING GLASS, A rooftop playground and heritage-listed facade are all features of Goodstart Early Learning’s largest early learning centre located in Adelaide Street, Brisbane. The 207-place centre will be the newest of Goodstart’s 645 centres, and it is expected to open in mid-April this year. The mechanically-controlled sky light, private open rooftop and architecturally-landscaped play space are all part of the centre’s custom-built design, which will create a natural oasis within the heart of Brisbane’s CBD. The centre is directly above the Brisbane H&M store, with secure lift entry from Adelaide Street and a basement carpark for safe drop-off and

pick-up. Located in the middle of Brisbane’s vibrant shopping district, it is within easy walking distance of buses, trains and CityCat transport. An on-site chef will cook fresh and nutritious meals for the children, and a Queensland Government-approved kindergarten program will be delivered by Bachelor-degree qualified teachers. Centre Director Shaun Butcher, who brings a wealth of business experience to Goodstart, says subtropical rainforests and natural materials inspire the space they’ve created. “Children will experience the seven senses as they explore the atrium, where they can touch the

bark of the trees, walk barefoot over the stepping stones and admire the view on raised platforms,” Mr Butcher says. “No two days will be the same, with bike circuits, rope bridges, water play and sandpits as well as quiet reading zones and seating pods.” Goodstart Early Learning State Manager Dr Lesley Jones says the right childcare could inspire a love of learning in children to help them reach their full potential. Turkish towels will come in handy as a tablecloth and soft accent colour for the space. They will also act as the perfect backdrop when it comes time to accessorise and plate up your meal. ENHANCING STUDENT SKILLS STEM vs. STEAM... and now Loreto College presents STREAM. STEM EDUCATION IS a familiar concept for most, and the aim to enhance skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics has been a successful and popular one. Following further analysis, educators recently added an A to the acronym. It stands for Art, and this attention to inspired creative thinking has powered STEAM. Now, one of Brisbane’s premier independent girls’ schools, Loreto College, has taken these teaching and learning philosophies a step further with the launch of STREAM. With an added R for Research, STREAM drives cross-curricular teaching and learning to an entirely new level, unlocking creativity and incorporating planning to encourage students to explore inventive and artistic approaches to STEM applications and to fuel interest in prospective careers.

The driver of STREAM at Loreto College is Ms Tania Gallen, the Director of Professional Learning and Cognitive Education. Ms Gallen says, “The objective of STREAM challenges is to have students focus on creative problem solving, visible thinking [and] teamwork, and to encourage them to work as they would in a professional environment: researching, collaborating, designing, constructing, presenting and evaluating.” This modernised method of teaching and learning has reinforced the school’s commitment to excellence in education. Loreto is one of the top

academic schools in the state, with 99 per cent of OP-eligible students successfully securing tertiary placements at the conclusion of Year 12 in 2016. The comprehensive and vibrant educational program enables each student to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity, cementing the College’s reputation for empowering and motivating young women. Her advice for small business owners is simple: “The spectrum of highs and lows will be intense, but above all go for it and be bold. “DREAMS CAN COME TRUE, “Dreams can BUT THEY CAN ALSO come true, but UNRAVEL. YOU NEED TO they can also WORK HARDER THAN unravel. You need ANYONE YOU KNOW...” to work harder then anyone you know and back yourself even on the sh*t days.” 2017 will be even bigger and better for Ash and Barre Brisbane. Newcomers can take advantage of a special intro offer (a five-class pass for $50), and on March 31 Barre Brisbane will hold a 1st birthday party at Miss Bliss Whole Foods Kitchen. Following the success of a sold-out barre retreat in Noosa, Ash has teamed up with yogi master Patty Perlman for an all-inclusive seven-day Bali retreat in April, with places available for only $2900. Ash is also hoping to open a new studio on Brisbane’s north side in the coming months. She’s currently on the hunt for an exciting new location.

ASH DANIEC SPENT her childhood in dance studios, learning the ins and outs of ballet from her mother, a professional dance teacher. Though Ash went on to pursue a career in public relations and marketing, she always felt drawn to dance. In the end, the urge was too strong to ignore. At the age of 26, she took a risk and let go of her major marketing client to start her next chapter: Barre Brisbane, located in West End. Less than a year later, Ash’s studio has become a thriving fitness and dance business. Barre Brisbane now has five instructors, is open seven days a week, and holds classes ranging from Barre Cardio to Yummy Mummy. Barre’s ever-increasing popularity in the fitness world is due to its ability to lengthen and tone muscles all over the body, allowing you to feel strong in both body and mind. With an ultimate goal to succeed and make a positive mark on the world (starting in her local community), Ash’s drive and vision has helped her 31

OPULENT OPTICAL WARDROBE These days, spectacles are as much about being seen as seeing. OPTICAL EYEWEAR HAS given us one of the best fashion and utility combinations. These days, most people need glasses to better tackle daily tasks where their vision may be impaired. But, contrary to popular belief, eyewear has come a long way from being something we use to see better. Eyewear makes more of a statement now than ever before. Traditional eyewear says goodbye to the norm and embraces the peculiar. Recently, we’ve seen designers cast all boundaries aside and revel in the freedom to inject this season with utterly brilliant specs and sunnies that prove any style goes. Atypical colour treatments and never-done-before silhouettes have begun to set the stage for an entirely

new realm of fashionable eyewear. At Madonna Rigney Optometry, we enjoy exploring the fashion potential of amazing eyewear. We believe that glasses should be like your favourite lipstick or an excellent pair of earrings – an accessory that helps to make a look your own. Today, spectacles are as much about being seen as seeing. Perhaps that’s why people are using the term “optical wardrobe” to describe their eyewear collections. Shopping for a pair of great spectacles can be a lot of fun, especially when doing so in the right store with expert guidance. TAKE IT UP A NOTCH They’ve offered freedom and controversy in the past; now power suits are ready to take the lead, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. THERE’S SOMETHING EMPOWERING about watching a woman strut her stuff in a crisp suit. French actress Sarah Bernhardt became the first known woman to blur the gender rules when she wore a custom-made trouser suit in the 1870s. Since then, the power suit has seen a continued evolution, right up to Hillary Clinton’s beloved pantsuits that took centre stage in 2016. Mini or major, mixed or matched, there’s only one rule for this season’s go-to suit: wear it with confidence.

READY TO RENOVATE?

SUPPORTING CHANGE

THE FITTING PROCESS

AFTER STARTING WITH the business in 1997 and being a proud owner for 15 years, I’m excited to say that this year Designer Kitchens will celebrate its 27th birthday. We have been designing, manufacturing and installing kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor kitchens along with all types of general cabinetry in Brisbane for nearly three decades and we are extremely proud of this milestone. It is evident that many of our clients look to us for kitchen design expertise, as they know that they can trust our extensive experience and longevity in the industry. All of our kitchens are made right here in Brisbane, and we have an exceptional team of dedicated plumbers, electricians and carpenters on-call to utilise whenever required. Already this year, we’ve had many interested renovators visit our West End and Newstead showrooms to talk about their options. We are predicting that 2017 will be extremely positive for Designer Kitchens and the renovating and building industry as a whole.

AT THIS TIME of year, young children and their families are often making changes to new childcare centres or schools. For many children, this is an easy transition, but for some it can produce feelings of anxiety and even fear. The good news is there are a few simple things that parents can do to help children manage. The old saying “practice makes perfect” is also true for helping young children cope with change. Find opportunities for your child to practise getting ready in the morning and packing their bags. This helps build familiarity and confidence in managing the daily routine. It is also very important to practise saying goodbye and separating from you without anxiety. Discuss when you will drop them off and return at the end of the day. Staying calm and positive is key, as children are incredibly intuitive when it comes to their parents’ emotions. Your child’s teacher and educators are well trained to assist both you and your child. Together, you can support your child to manage change well.

CREATING AN AMAZING suit requires six elements, with fit being the most important. For an online tailor-made suit costing between $200 and $500, you will be required to measure yourself. Achieving a perfectly-fitted suit with this process can be almost impossible. Made-to-measure suits from $600 to $1200 require trying on pre-made suits to understand the fit. MTM allows small changes such as sleeve length; however, the shoulders, first button and jacket length don’t always fit. In-store tailor-made suits (without skeleton baste) from $1350 will require measurements taken in-store and usually some alterations. For bespoke suits starting at $1500, a skeleton baste is made after measurements, body posture and fitting preferences are noted. Your first fitting will be with baste; modifications are noted, fabric is pinned and chalked with an understanding of how the fabric falls on the body. Wil Valor creates bespoke suits to achieve an impeccably-fitted suit that is customised to your body and its movements.

VALENTINE’S DAY Creole dry-rubbed North Queensland cobia with a blackened scotch bonnet, pineapple and young coconut sambal

HONEST AND INNOVATIVE With fresh ingredients at the heart of its new menu, the dishes at Spicers Balfour pack a serious flavour punch. FOUR YEARS IN the United Kingdom (three of them spent as head chef at Rooms on Regent’s Park and The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) has helped Carla Sullivan become the innovative chef she is today. Upon Carla’s return to Brisbane three months ago, her desire to share her knowledge and love of local fresh produce led to a role as head chef at The Balfour Kitchen at New Farm’s Spicers Hotel. For the past three months, Carla has created a dining experience at The Balfour Kitchen that allows guests to explore simple and honest food exploding with flavour. The verandah bistro setting makes the hotel feel like a home away from home. Carla is also committed to introducing new ingredients and evolving with the seasonal produce. The freshest local offerings will continue to influence the menus at Spicers Balfour

Her current menu includes innovative dishes such as whole baked Queensland Murray cod with a green papaya kaffir lime pickle. Marbled beef carpaccio, white anchovy emulsion, dried yellow peach, capers and Treviso utilise Australian and Queensland produce with complementary international flavours all while keeping it simple. In her short time as head chef at The Balfour Kitchen, Carla has already proven her passion for honouring her ingredients by meeting with the restaurant’s suppliers wherever possible. This personal approach ensures that Carla and the suppliers have a shared respect and pride for fresh and sustainable produce. With the belief that there should be a story behind all food, Carla relies on the simplicity of nature’s flavoursome produce to be the hero of her dishes.

VALENTINE’S DAY

DITCH THE CLICHÉ Sick of the lovey-dovey Valentine’s Day traditions? Mix it up with something that will test your resolve and your relationship, writes Sarah Taviani. FLOWERS. CHOCOLATES. JEWELLERY. Proclamations of love. This Hallmark holiday isn’t for everyone. If you want to try something different that could end in hilarity, I’ve got you. JUMP OUT OF A PLANE I’m talking about skydiving. Stop being morbid and get some adrenaline pumping for a fun and exhilarating date experience. TAKE A CLASS What skill have you been wanting to cultivate? Cooking? Whittling wood? Calligraphy? Improvisational acting? It’s a great time to learn something new with your partner.

38

PLAY CARD GAMES “I’m going to deal you a Draw 4 card in Uno.” It’s the new way to tell someone you love them. ASSEMBLE FURNITURE Really want to test your relationship? Assemble a flat pack. If you’re still together by the end, you know this is marriage material. HIT UP BUNNINGS Who needs a bouquet when you could start your own garden? If there’s a sausage sizzle going on, you’ve nailed your romantic Valentine’s Day lunch.

DO SOMETHING FOR CHARITY Someone amazing once said, “To love is to be selfless.” Just kidding. I made that up. But it’s true and donating your time to charity is a great idea. GET YOUR ART ON Why get professional photos taken when you could draw them like one of your French girls? Get a sketchbook and charcoals or an obnoxiously large canvas and oil paints. Hang it up in your house no matter how terrible it is. READ MORE ONLINE

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE.

AFTER “I DO” We all know the basic wedding prep steps, but what about the things that happen after your big day? By Sarah Taviani. GET A COPY OF YOUR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE While your officiant will supply you with a copy on the day, you actually need to head to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages to get the official document that can be used as proof of a name change in the future. CHANGING YOUR NAME Cool fact: if you get married in Australia, changing your name is covered by your marriage certificate. But you’ll need to let some government agencies, your bank and utility suppliers know about the change.

40

PRESERVE THE GOWN Dry-clean ASAP, wrap the wedding dress in acid-free tissue paper and keep it in a box away from sunlight. SEND THANK-YOU CARDS Mail out personalised cards thanking your guests for their attendance and for their gift. Make sure you note down the correct gift for each person to avoid mix-ups! REVIEW WEDDING VENDORS The venue, the catering, the photography and everything else – write up a review of your experience while it’s fresh in your mind. This way,

both the vendor and future couples can learn from your rating. BE PREPARED FOR THE CHANGE Even if you’ve been with your partner for years, some things will change on a personal level. Elizabeth, who has been married for just under four years, says, “[Everyone has] their own opinions of what you do right and wrong. But the fact is every marriage will grow and develop along with the couple. As long as they keep growing along the same path, it’ll always be fine.” READ MORE ONLINE

FOOD+DRINK DEFY TRADITION

Christopher Tope and Leslie Mclauchlan brought their dream to life in New Farm with The Long Road Bar & Eatery, writes Christie Sutherland. CREATED IN A renovated workers cottage, The Long Road Bar & Eatery holds a distinct appeal. With a large feature table to prompt a communal experience, the venue has a relaxed European vibe that is complemented by Head Chef Phoebe Mille’s obvious love for modern Parisian dining. Phoebe’s menu holds an experimental yet simple offering, with a focus on carnivorous mains and share plates that will please any meat-lover. The small share plates open the doors to a setting of laughter, good company and great food. The Moreton Bay bugs with carrot and orange puree, passionfruit and roasted carrot really set the tone with exciting fresh flavours. Next, the milk-poached lamb sweetbreads arrived, paired with roasted parsnip, caramelised

fennel puree, milk foam and crumb. I couldn’t take my eyes off the beautifully-plated slow-cooked and charred octopus. Complete with roast purple carrots and beets and a charred carrot puree, this is one dish you need to try. The wine list offers wonderful accompaniments for many meals, with drops from European areas as well as Australian vintages. And if you’re in the mood for an impromptu treat, the restaurant’s array of meats and cheeses is the perfect solution. Sitting on the deck, watching passersby and soaking up the European atmosphere was the perfect way to finish the experience. FACT OR FICTION?

DEALING WITH PROBLEM PERIODS

SKIN BEAUTY BOOSTER

ARE THE OLD wives’ tales true? Does wearing high heels and crossing your legs really result in visible veins? FACT: High heels change your natural walking motion, shifting weight to the forefoot and toes. This causes the calf muscle to remain contracted, which results in pooling of venous blood. The used blood is not moved back up the leg as the muscle “pump” fails. FACT: Crossing your legs, sitting or standing still for long periods can also cause a disruption to the venous system. FACT: For the most part, varicose veins are hereditary. However, your lifestyle can make veins appear sooner than expected. If you wear high heels or are sedentary for most of the day, there is an increased risk of venous disease because the vascular system is not working as it is designed to. FACT: You don’t need to stop wearing heels or crossing your legs altogether. Just be mindful of those veins; mix up your footwear, remember to stretch, and walk for at least 30 minutes a day.

THROUGHOUT HISTORY, WOMEN who were having problems with their periods were commonly told that they “just had to put up with it”. Or, if they were old enough, they were told to have a hysterectomy. Thankfully, we’ve come a long way since then, and there are many ways for gynaecologists to help with problem periods. Heavy periods, painful periods, irregular periods – there is almost always something that can be done and many of the solutions are either non-surgical or minimally invasive and have very high success rates. Depending on the underlying cause of the problem, options might include: • Appropriate and monitored use of some anti-inflammatory medications • Hormonal management (sometimes through the use of the contraceptive pill) • Long-acting reversible contraceptives • Day procedures to reduce future bleeding • Hysterectomy Don’t put up with periods that are making you miserable. Seek advice from an expert!

SIGNS OF AGEING and sun damage, along with other lifestyle choices, can contribute to unhealthy-looking skin. So what can you do to help hydrate and repair your skin besides using a moisturiser? Skin Beauty Booster is a new treatment to hydrate and moisturise the skin. This hydration and therapeutic needling treatment uses the Vital Injector 2 (V2 Injector) and needling to nourish and help repair the skin. Fibroblasts are triggered, encouraging new collagen and elastin in the skin. The goal is to treat the skin, not to fill lines or increase volume like anti-wrinkle muscle relaxants or dermal fillers. By coupling a needling treatment with small deposits of an injectable substance, you have the advantage of two treatments in one. This injectable compensates for the natural loss of hyaluronic acid in the skin and can also assist in stimulating the production of collagen. This treatment replenishes your skin to help it glow, smooth out wrinkles and restore volume.

IMPROVING YOUR FERTILITY

INVESTING IN YOUR GIFT

KEEPING IT LIGHT

HIGH STRESS LEVELS, poor nutritional choices, smoking, and drinking to excess are all factors that can negatively affect fertility. While it can be frustrating if conception takes longer than initially thought, lifestyle tweaks can often increase your chances of falling pregnant. A protein-rich diet filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, and foods high in vitamin C and D, zinc and iron is encouraged, with men especially benefitting from increased selenium intake. It’s important to discuss the most appropriate medication for improving your fertility; there is a wide range available for both men and women. Simply cutting back on caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes will increase your chances, while pesticides on food and working with harmful industrial chemicals, jet fuel and radiation can hamper pregnancy. Research shows that men who keep their phones in their pockets or computers on their laps tend to have a lower sperm count, but the jury is still out on whether boxers or briefs lower quality and quantity.

IT’S FUNNY HOW the more something costs; the more likely we are to look after it. That expensive car is lovingly cleaned and polished, driven, regularly serviced and maintained. So how do you look after your $148,000 gift? If you’re thinking no one has ever given you a gift that expensive, you’re mistaken. Those 28 teeth in your mouth are worth at least that much. Your teeth may be just another part of your body, but if you had to replace each tooth with individual implants and crowns, it could cost at least that much, if not more! Everything that enters our bodies for nutrition gets there through the mouth. Our teeth never get a rest. They’re part of the body’s gateway and central to our communication with the outside world. So let me ask again: how do you protect your $148,000 gift? Do you scrupulously clean, polish and floss your teeth every day? Do you protect them at night from clenching and grinding? Do you get them regularly serviced and maintained? If not, maybe it’s time to start.

ONE OF THE most attractive things you can do with your eyebrows is make them a couple of shades lighter than your hair. My Arch Angels take a professional cream brow lightener and apply it to the eyebrows, leaving it on for anywhere from one to 15 minutes, depending on how light you want your brows to be. It’s an amazing brow-lifting trick! We all know Kim Kardashian loves changing up her look as much as the next limelight-lover, so we get a little bit excited when Kim channels a softer, lightened brow. A professional brow lightening instantly adds warmth to your look and can actually draw more attention to your eyes. Those super-strong dark brows that were so popular last year can steal the attention and be overbearing. In 2017, it’s out with fully-graded dark brows and in with full, fluffy, more natural-looking brows! Try our customised Brow Lightening. It will transform your look with a colour-lift and enhance the warmth in your eyes. You’ll look like you’ve had a great summer dose of vitamin D!

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE Dr Anne-Maree Cole shares how she hopes to change the face of a typical dental experience, one smile at a time. I LOVE BEING a dentist. Our profession provides us with the opportunity to interact on a very personal level with so many people from all walks of life, and it is a privilege to be entrusted by the people who choose to come to us for care. Sadly, many people are fearful of going to the dentist and they neglect their dental wellness as a result. Like most things we fear, that perception comes from mental horror stories. My vision for the design of my practice was to rewrite those stories. I wanted to create a space that was so unlike a typical dental practice that those unpleasant memories fail to be evoked and the mind is opened up to a new and enjoyable experience. As beautiful as our building is, it is nothing without the wonderful Aesthetic Excellence team. Recently, we celebrated our 10-year anniversary of opening Aesthetic Excellence and I find milestones like this are a good time to reflect and refocus on where we are heading. Part of our 10-year reflection was to look at our business name, Aesthetic Excellence, and see if it still reflected who we are and what we do. We felt it was too narrow a focus to reflect the diversity of the range of practice services we offer.

Dr Anne-Maree Cole

“Many people are fearful of going to the dentist.. I wanted to create a space that was so unlike a typical dental practice that those unpleasant memories fail to be evoked and the mind is opened up to a newer, happier and more enjoyable experience. As a result, we are proud to announce that our new business name is James Street Dentists. This change in name reflects the fabulous James Street Precinct in which we work and the extensive range of services we now offer our clientele, which is far beyond our initial vision. We are proud to offer exceptional care in all areas of dentistry, from routine general and preventative dentistry to the highly specific and complex care areas, such as help for TMD sufferers, treatment for sleep apnoea,

jaw development, orthopaedic orthodontics, and beautiful smile makeovers. Our mission is to change the face of dentistry by who we are, what we do and how we do it. We welcome the opportunity to delight you and your family with your dental experience at James Street Dentists in the future! PUTTING YOUR HEALTH FIRST How are your resolutions going? Wesley LifeShape Clinic reveals its approach to tackling challenges and sticking to a healthy lifestyle. WE OFTEN BEGIN the new year with a determination to implement healthy changes to our lifestyle. However, by February, many people are struggling to keep their motivation high and start to give up on their resolutions and good intentions. Each month offers an opportunity to try something new. February is a great month to reassess your approach to your personal goals. If losing weight or getting fit was at the top of your to do list in 2017, how are you going with making a lasting change on your own? There are no arguments that losing weight can be challenging. In order to achieve healthy weight loss, we need to target all aspects of our lifestyle. Once we have identified key areas of change, we can move towards strategies to maintain positive habits and break the cycle of unhealthy behaviours. Sometimes we just need to enlist a little help to do this successfully. Think about what didn’t work when you were

50

trying to make a change on your own. Was having someone to keep you accountable missing from your strategy? If the resolution is still important to you, and you just need a little help to correct the method, evidence shows that a multidisciplinary approach to losing weight, such as the structured program offered by Wesley LifeShape Clinic, is more effective than persevering on your own. The end goal of each LifeShape program is to ensure every client is able to internalise accountability, to achieve a mindset shift and practise the techniques from their sessions in order to maintain healthy weight loss over the long term. It’s not time to give up on your resolutions; it’s simply time to find a supportive approach that works for you. WESLEY LIFESHAPE CLINIC P 1800 567 348 WESLEYLIFESHAPE.COM.AU

BRUSH UP From lip brushes to beauty sponges, Hannah Doody finds out which bristles go where. FOUNDATION BRUSH Available in flat or round varieties, these are used for smooth, easy application of liquid foundation. Tip: Use the round brushes in a swirling motion and the flat brushes in a painting motion (but be careful to avoid streaks!). LIP BRUSH Most of us ignore lip brushes completely and just apply straight from the lipstick tube because it’s quicker and easier. If you have the patience for a lip brush, the tapered bristles will give you better precision while using far less product. Plus, a thin layer with a lip brush has more staying power than a thick swipe on the go. BEAUTY SPONGE This little miracle has quickly acquired cult status. Once you master the dab/bounce motion, you’ll be able to enjoy flawless application of primer, foundation, concealer and liquid highlighters. CREASE EYESHADOW BRUSH Use this brush to lightly dust eyeshadow along the crease of the eyelid, and blend colours to avoid harsh lines.

KEEP ON MOVING Is your activity causing your varicose veins? ATHLETIC PEOPLE (PARTICULARLY runners and cyclists) frequently present with varicose veins. This is to be expected because of the huge increase in load on the venous system in the legs during intense physical activity, which can damage the vein walls in people with a predisposition to varicose veins. At The Leg Vein Doctor clinics in Brisbane and Toowoomba, we see a number of patients who have deferred treatment for their varicose veins because they worry it will interfere with their sporting schedule. But the longer the delay in treating varicose veins, the higher the risk of microcellular damage to the skin around the lower leg and ankles. In the long-term, there is a risk of the skin ulcerating and causing varicose ulcers. Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA) or Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) are walk-in/walk-out,

non-invasive treatments offered at The Leg Vein Doctor. These clinic-based procedures don’t require any hospitalisation and are therefore easier to schedule into a busy life. They have been likened to “keyhole” varicose vein surgery, but with no downtime as there is no admission to hospital and no need for general anaesthetic. You are back on your feet for a 30-minute walk immediately after the procedure and you can then drive home.

At the initial consultation, you will be provided with a treatment plan, which is valid for 12 months. The reception team at The Leg Vein Doctor will happily work with you to find appointment dates that fit around your training schedule and any other events in your calendar.
