f January has been anything to go by, 2018 is already proving to be the year of bold moves. We’ve seen women take resounding steps forward to forge exciting new paths, which led us to highlight all the Brisbane movers and shakers (pg. 17) you’ll want to keep an eye on this year. With that said, we haven’t forgotten the gents either. For our February edition, we’re thrilled to showcase the best in male fashion. Our collaboration with Wintergarden celebrates new-age men’s style at its finest and it couldn’t possibly look any better than against the backdrop of luxury retreat, Spicers Peak Lodge (pg. 28 & 34). With New Year’s Resolutions becoming a distant memory, hearing from cricketing champions Usman Khawaja (pg. 25) and Brisbane’s own Holly Ferling (pg. 16) is just the motivation we need to stay inspired. We draw back the curtain on two of the fashion industry’s leading ladies who’ve carved a name for themselves in the industry. Find out on page 20 why Amanda Shadforth and Brooke Testoni (pg. 32) are groundbreaking businesswomen in a league of their own. The wedding season is upon us, and there’s even more reason to celebrate love this year, thanks to the passing of the marriage equality bill in parliament. We couldn’t be more proud to present Scott and Ryan and Christian and Simon in this month’s edition as we celebrate every kind of love, in every setting. With love in our eyes, we’re gearing up for a Valentine’s Day that celebrates the little things and we can’t wait to share the love.

PASSION into PURPOSE
RACHEL AUST – OWNER, EAT RUN LIFT
PAGE 14
When it comes to starting your own business, it’s true that knowledge is power. But perhaps the one thing more valuable than knowledge, is passion. WORDS COURTNEY FRANK READ MORE ONLINE
A
small Instagram following and a blog are all it took for Rachel Aust to grow her audience into the hugely successful company, Eat Run Lift. Passion is key to starting a business. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about sharing thoroughly researched and science-based health and fitness information, in the most visually pleasing way possible. When I first began my own fitness journey I was finding so many articles stating contradictory things and I felt confused with where to go and how to find what would work for me. I wanted to combine solid information that can help women along their journeys to discover what works best for their body, and share it in a way that appeals to my creative side. Why did you want to start your own business? I’ve always been very self-motivated, even when I was working under other people. I find that I have a lot of energy and can pour laser-focus into tasks when I’m interested in something. I wanted to share what I was passionate about and also give myself more opportunity to create content (visual or written) on a daily basis.
Do you think having a strong passion for something is enough to ensure success? Passion is an important foundation, but not the ‘be all, end all’ to success, in my opinion. Along with it I believe you must bring modesty – to see where you’re falling short and bring other people on board who can help fulfil your vision with their skills. Patience, to recognise that sometimes things don’t work out and to keep trying if it’s what you truly want to achieve. I also believe that you must have morality, to ensure that you are doing right by your customers and audience. What keeps you going through the tough and tumultuous times? I try to remain grateful. I know I’m in a position that some people are working towards and I put a lot of work into getting there myself. So when I do encounter tough patches I remind myself they will pass and remember all the things I love about what I do. One piece of advice you’d like to share with Style readers: Listen to your gut! Some people (even those that are close to you) may think they have a great idea for something that will help your business, but if your gut is telling you no, don’t do it. FEBRUARY 2018
F
or Brett and Alison Hutley, the thought of sending out beautiful, healthy food into the community was the driving force behind their passion project, Botanica Real Food. How did you transform your passion into a successful company? It takes a lot of hard work. Passion is important but it’s taking action that gets you over the line. There are many sacrifices involved in creating a successful business and turning a passion into a company is a lot more work than play. Do you think having a strong passion for something is enough to ensure success? No. Of course, it is vitally important to have a passion for your business and be genuine in your drive. But no amount of passion will survive without the hard work and dedication it takes to get a business up and
running and thriving. When you encounter tough times, what is it that keeps you going? There is no alternative, if you don’t keep going, no one will do it for you. You just have to push on and learn what you can from the tough times. In six years of business we have had a lot of big lessons and each one makes us stronger and more passionate about Botanica Real Food. What do you know now, that you wish you knew back then? That it will all be worthwhile. When we opened Botanica I was three months pregnant with our first child. We had just left two high profile rewarding jobs in Sydney, relocated to Brisbane and had no idea if anyone would think our concept for a salad shop was as great as we did. I need not have stressed so much about that.

im Johnson spent over 20 years working in the hospitality business before making the decision to go out on his own. Now, he’s the Director of some of Brisbane’s most loved hospitality venues, Comuna Cantina and Corbett & Claude. Tell us about the passion that fuels your company: I think it begins with a genuine love for hospitality; making people feel good and creating a place they love to be is at the core of everything that drives us. It’s an addictive feeling making people happy and hospitality provides an opportunity to make this happen hundreds of times a day. What was your motivation for starting a business? I began working in hospitality when I was 13 and within a couple of years had become obsessed with the industry. Throughout my time working for other people, I became really passionate about the need for freedom of thought and creativity and the ability to create a culture I believed in, as well as providing an experience for the guest that I felt would leave them feeling uplifted and valued. Do you think having a strong passion for something is enough to ensure success? STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
“I think passion is what makes you begin, and then drives you each day.”
I think passion is what makes you begin, and then drives you each day. However, for a company to be successful and sustainable it needs detailed layers of systems and structure operating within a proven business model in order to be successful long-term. What do you love most about being a business owner? The ability to be creative without boundaries, working with a culture and team that I’m proud of and the fact that I’m constantly being challenged.

The FUTURE is FEMALE
Women in sport have come a long way, but there’s still a way to go, as Brisbane Heat Fast Bowler Holly Ferling reveals. WORDS BY TAMILLE HEAD
T
hey play, train and work like all sports professionals, but still, sportswomen aren’t paid on the same level or given the same amount of media coverage as their male counterparts. Now at the height of her sporting career, Holly Ferling reflects on her awareness of the inequalities growing up. “I remember writing speeches for English in year six about the pay disparities between women and men in sport as well as the difference in how each athlete was treated. As I got older, my eyes have been opened to the fact that it isn’t just an issue unique to sport,” Ferling says. “There’s that old saying that goes, you can’t be what you can’t see. And that was all too true for me growing up in a small country town. I had no idea at the age of 12 that girls played cricket, let alone at the elite level.” Fast forward ten years and Ferling is regularly approached by young girls telling her that they want to play for the Brisbane Heat one day. “It’s super humbling, but it’s all because the coverage has increased. This is where the next five years is super exciting, and those young girls starting out their careers will walk into something incredible in the future,” she says. Crediting the inspiring sportswomen of the past for paving the way for girls in sport today, Ferling wants to make sure her generation leave the legacy of women in sport in a better place than where they found it to inspire future female sporting heroes. “The exciting thing now is that things are changing. It’s an exciting time to be a woman.” READ MORE ONLINE

hether she’s looking through her camera lens or developing campaigns for international luxury retailers, you can spot the Oracle Fox aesthetic a mile away. Today, Amanda Shadforth, the founder and creative director of Oracle Fox travels around Australia and beyond with the kind of enviable dynamism that sees her acknowledged as a highly respected photographer, creative strategist, fashion illustrator and stylist. But it wasn’t always high fashion shoots and luxury label campaigns. From humble beginnings raised on a cane farm in Queensland, Amanda grew up as a tomboy with a family of civil PAGE 20
engineers and earth moving contractors. She always knew she was a black sheep. Throughout high school, she gravitated towards art and English but knew that the idea of becoming a fine artist in the future wouldn’t float well with her family. After finishing school, Amanda worked with a local signwriter for three years before starting her own business as a chalkboard writer. Working with clients all over Queensland for eight years; this is where she learned how to be a creative and run a business. “I knew there would be a timeline on the popularity of chalkboards.” She jokes.“I got to a point where I got sick of doing barbecue
chicken shops and would often be on scaffolding on the side of a highway painting truck yard signs, and would think, this is really not where I thought I would end up.” During that time, Amanda would often paint for herself and enter local exhibitions, which eventually gave her the confidence to become a fine artist and open her own gallery on the Sunshine Coast. The more inspired Amanda became, the quicker her studio walls would fill with endless mood boards, which led her to start a WordPress website as a side project. “I started my site as a space for my personal inspiration and also as a space for me to archive things that inspired me and to hopefully meet other creatives, mostly artists,” she explains. “When I realised I could monitor my following, I found I had 300 followers and that made me really nervous.” It didn’t take long for Oracle Fox to be recognised and promoted by sites like Bloglovin’. Within weeks the website gained a huge following, increasing by the thousands. From then, almost instantly, Amanda had brands contacting her to work with them and she began formulating a creative strategy, realising she could make a career out of her Oracle Fox work. “It’s not that I wasn’t loving what I was doing as an artist, I’d just hit a dead end in the space that I was at and I thought why not take the risk and move into the digital space.” READ MORE ONLINE FEBRUARY 2018
Going, GOING, GONE! We’ve got all the tips you need to know before it goes under the hammer.
S
o, you’ve finally found your dream home or investment property after months of trawling through listings and it’s up for auction. Forget what you’ve heard, buying a property at auction needn’t be a stressful ordeal. We spoke to Glenn Bool from Place Bulimba to get some inside knowledge ahead of auction day.
Do your homework I would always suggest that people do research on the area, know recent sales information, and attend as many open homes as possible to get really strong local knowledge. In most cases, the agent will be able to provide a building and pest report as well, these are done by registered companies and in most cases, are fully transferrable to the new owner.
Speak to an agent An agent is the main portal for information, use that resource. A good agent will have as much detail about the property as possible, all the information a buyer will ever need. Ask questions, there is no such thing as a dumb question. I personally like to have buyer’s specific questions to me in writing and I will source that information from the seller, if not already known, so the responses are direct and factual.
Bid with confidence Upwards of 80 per cent of the time, the first bidder at auction ultimately becomes the final bidder and secures the property. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
GLENN BOOL
Know your budget I feel that it’s important to understand your budget and have your figures written down so you can refer to that during the auction. Perhaps two figures, how much you would love to buy it for and also how much you are prepared to pay.
“80% of the time the FIRST BIDDER at an auction ultimately wins.”

ff the back of the success of his breakout TV series, The Other Guy, Brissie boy Matt Okine is preparing to take his new stand-up show, The Hat Game, on the road later this year, stopping off in the River City as part of the Brisbane Comedy Festival. Last year was a massive year for the comedian, who won the hearts of many during his three-year stint behind the desk on Triple J mornings, along with co-host and good mate Alex Dyson. Fresh from a two and a half month-long trip travelling around Europe, Matt has had some time to reflect on his accomplishments. “I learnt a lot last year. In terms of how to write a show and the process around that, but also about managing myself and not wearing myself out. There were times where everything was going great, but I got tired. I got really tired in the middle there,” Okine muses. “I also got fat. I just ate and drank every day PAGE 22
(of the trip) without any regard for my body whatsoever, and it turns out my body keeps a tab on all these things and is not letting me go lightly. I’ll be paying the price of that trip for a few years to come.” With his sole focus for the start of 2018 being stand-up, The Hat Game promises to be peppered with the trademark Okine humour we’ve all come to love. “I’ve got a bit more time on my hands now to make a really good show. There are few things going on in the world that I want to get my hands on and flesh out. There are things in the last 12 months that I can’t not talk about. I try to ride the line between saying something worth saying and absolute stupidity. While I was thinking about intense things such as the national plebiscite, I also thought about how envelopes are basically just shit origami. There’s always an element of stupidity in everything I do.” It’s this element of stupidity that has fans of

his Stan series eager to see a second season of his semi-autobiographical show. “If it was up to me, and solely me, we’d be filming right now. There are so many different parties involved in making a TV show. All I can really do is come up with a good reason to make season two.” But for now, the multi-award winning comedian is just looking forward to getting back to his hometown to perform. “It never stops being fun for me. Brisbane is so my home. If my dad wouldn’t get so angry with me, I would get a #4000 tatt on my neck.” READ MORE ONLINE FEBRUARY 2018
Winn Lane Before 2010, Winn Lane was nothing more than an empty space. Now home to a variety of independent businesses, it has hosted many events from yard sales to dog shows, as well as being the backdrop for the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival.

Bakery Lane Bakery Lane started as an idea to revitalise an under-utilised laneway. The lane opened in early 2015, surrounded by heritage buildings from the 1800s which originally housed tailors, watchmakers and other artisan businesses. The lane’s namesake, Bragg’s Bakery, was a family run business that opened in 1864 and ran for over 40 years.

The newest development under the Apostolos family umbrella, California Lane, is currently under construction and due for completion in July 2018. After a few years of hosting a 7-11 in the late 90s, the café is now back up and running as part of the Apostolos empire.

Going for GOLD
A
Sarah Tayler chats to Delvene Cockatoo-Collins to find out the story behind the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games medals.
rtist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins has had many roles over the years. From working in retail to working at a university. And from modelling to youth work, and now raising her three boys. Starting out creating art and jewellery as a hobby, then expanding to sell her creations at local markets, Delvene is now a full-time artist with a permanent studio and retail space in her hometown of Dunwich on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). Delvene’s brand, Made in Minjerribah, began with ceramic whales; inspired by a sighting of Migalu the white whale with her family on Minjerribah in 2014. She then branched out into other ceramics, jewellery, screen printing and homewares. Despite her growing success, everything is still made by hand at her studio in Dunwich. For Delvene, her work is a family affair, taking inspiration from her Quandamooka ancestors, the history of the land, and spending time with her relatives on the island.
A lot of her work centres around recording stories by responding to them in a material form – whether that be sculptures, installations or ceramics. That way others can access and appreciate the stories and ensure they are passed down through the generations. Her days on the island are spent with family, creating works of art in her studio and spending as much time as she can in the natural environment that inspires her work. Delvene was approached to design the medals for the Commonwealth Games, which are being held on the Gold Coast in April 2018. The final medal design was revealed at a ceremony in November 2017. We caught up with her to find out about her life on the island and the story behind the medals. Can you tell us a bit about your design for the Commonwealth Games medals? The designs on the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games medals are the soft sand lines which shift with every tide and are symbolic of athletic achievement. In the
ribbon, the pattern is the woven strand of the freshwater reed ‘yungair’, it is three reeds woven together to form a series of triangles. The medals are partly inspired by the Gold Coast coastline – what is your favourite thing about living by the ocean? My favourite would be the choice to walk on the beach every day. It really is a privilege. Have you ever won a medal? Yes, I used to run. I always did ok at local and regional level. I’m pretty sure there were some gold medals in that mix. READ MORE ONLINE

A day in the life of:
USMAN KHAWAJA A sneak peek into the life of the Australian Test player and Queensland Bulls Captain. WORDS BY COURTNEY FRANK
W
e all love to know what a typical day in the life looks like for other people. Especially celebrities. When it comes to a national sporting icon like cricket player, Usman Khawaja, we couldn’t wait to lift the veil on his private life. The international cricketer has amazed Australia with his performance on the pitch, but when he’s not hitting sixes, Brisbanebased Khawaja loves the simpler things in life. MORNING: I typically love to sleep in, so if I have nothing on, I’m not an early starter. But during the season, I usually have training in the morning so it really just depends what I have on. As soon as I get up, the first thing I do is shower, get ready, and complete the first of my daily five prayers. After that, I make sure I get some fuel in! Breakfast is so important – I don’t function well on an empty stomach – especially in the morning. If I have a big fitness session first up I sometimes skip breakfast – otherwise it might come back up during training! I’m big on a low carb, high-fat diet so a typical breakfast includes eggs and meat protein or spinach. I live on the south side of Brisbane, so if I head out for breakfast, Bulimba or Camp Hill are my usual hangouts. DAY: There isn’t really a ‘normal’ day for me, it changes all the time. Cricket is a very rare game STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
where there are three formats. So my training is very specific in terms of what and how much I’m doing. For example when it’s pre-season and we aren’t playing, a normal training week consists of lots of gym sessions mixed in with anaerobic cardio and high-speed running sessions. On the flip side, if I have an off day, I love to get out and play a round of golf at Brisbane Golf Course. Other than that, I just try to relax, since we don’t get a lot of downtime or time at home during the year. EVENING: As soon as I walk through the door from training, I always greet my fiancée Rachel with a smile and a kiss and spend time with my favourite man, LeBron (our puppy). We typically stay in for dinner since Rachel is a great cook – she’s the chef of the house. My specialities are pretty scarce! My fian cée Rach After dinner, I usually watch TV el and our pupp y, LeBro and finish off my day with the n. last of the daily prayers and try to switch off my mind before heading to bed. I’m not really a man of routines so I don’t have any particular night-time habits. Every day in my life is different!
I don’t function well on an empty stomach! PAGE 25

Minutes in Tinsel Town In the studio with Brisbane designer, author and creative, Rachel Burke. WORDS BY TAMILLE HEAD
I’m obsessed with your tinsel coats. When did you start making things from unexpected materials? My first tinsel jacket was made for my good pal Patience Hodgson (The Grates) to wear in her Splendour in the Grass performance. I received such an amazing response from the costume and decided to begin experimenting with how I could make a simplified, more wearable version. I began uploading my designs to social media and the response was crazy! My next collection is a little more complicated in terms of design and pattern...I’m so excited to share it! Why the fascination with tinsel? Years ago, I used to make the occasional jacket out of leftover Christmas tinsel. This was just for fun, and I really never thought much of it, until one day I had some leftover lametta strips lying around. As soon as I began experimenting with the tinsel and realising the effect it created, I just became obsessed with the silhouette
it made. The more I used the material, the more I became hooked. It’s become somewhat of an obsession now. In a past life, I was a performer, and I guess I just really connect with the drama and spectacle that wearing one of these pieces seems to create. How long does a typical garment of yours take to create? The average tinsel jacket takes around three hours to make. The larger and more complicated jackets can take anywhere from six to ten hours depending on the complexity of my design. Where do you do all your work? It’s usually me sewing alongside my sausage dogs, Daphne and Daisy, listening to a podcast or watching something fun on Netflix. Sometimes my husband will come and work in the studio too. He is a lawyer, so we jokingly call it the ‘Craft and Draft’ room. It’s a name that has really stuck! READ MORE ONLINE
Who would you most love to see wear your designs? Karen O, Tavi Gevinson, Petra Collins, Lorde...Oh gosh, just so many powerful ladies! It’s hard to pick a favourite! Follow Rachel on Instagram @imakestagram

We may only be a month into 2018, but this year is already shaping up to be a seriously fashionable one. We’ve collaborated with Wintergarden to showcase the latest trends for men. When updating your wardrobe or shopping for a specific event, start with a staple colour. Navy, charcoal, and neutrals are enduring sartorial choices and it’s easy to see why. They are versatile, immune to the effects of fleeting trends, and are perfect for both summer and winter seasons. Starting with this timeless foundation means you can add some fun to your look by incorporating new-season features such as vintage checks and vertical stripes. Wintergarden is the ultimate destination for a fashion-forward look with brands such as M.J. Bale, Peter Jackson, Oxford, Rodd & Gunn, Aquila and OPSM. This season we’re seeing an influx of clashing prints. A floral button-up shirt or fresh new stripe may be all your wardrobe needs to update your existing looks. Pair a tailored jacket with a casual boat shoe or fresh white sneaker to give your look a more relaxed, street edge. Accessorise with a bold pocket square and round-frame sunglasses to further elevate your style. WGARDEN.COM.AU

Classic cool The birth of Rylan: we follow the journey from blogger to handbag designer. WORDS BY TAMILLE HEAD
B
rooke Testoni has built a career that many can only dream of. Her eponymous blog serves as a visual diary showcasing her ability to mould trends to fit her own personal style. With an extensive background in the fashion industry, it was only a matter of time before the Brisbane-born beauty added the title of ‘designer’ to her skill set. You’ve been in the fashion industry for over a decade, what prompted you to launch your label? Yes, time goes fast doesn’t it! About two and a half years ago, I was searching for my ‘ideal’ bag. That being: inspired by the past, classic in style, without statement branding, and underneath the $1,000 mark. Unfortunately, there weren’t any that I was excited about. This is how the Rylan brand was formed. How long did it take you to develop? From the initial concept to the launch of the brand in August 2017, it has been around two years. I had hoped to launch a little earlier, but it was important not to rush the process and to be sure it is exactly how I had envisaged the brand. Where do you draw your design inspiration from? Music and furniture design have always been my biggest inspirations. I could put on an Otis Redding or a Bill Withers record and instantly have new thoughts and ideas run through my mind. Growing up, my Dad was in a band, so I have always been around old music. It truly brings me so much peace and joy. My husband and I collect vintage furniture and art. Each piece has inspired me in some way. Your husband also works in the fashion industry, did he have some input? He definitely has input. For those who know him, he is such a great guy and is a mentor to a lot of people in the industry. I have been so lucky to have him mentor me on the business side of the brand. I personally am a creative type, and PAGE 32

he has more of an analytical approach. Who is the Rylan girl? To me, the Rylan customer loves her fashion, yet isn’t one to label herself with obvious branding. She has a love for the mid-century era and has a classic yet effortless style. How would you describe your own personal style? My style is quite classic, effortless, androgynous. Lately I’ve been adding a bit of femininity. What’s your go-to outfit? High waisted denim, RM Willams boots, a t-shirt, gold jewellery and the small black Rylan satchel. However, for Summer, I would opt out of the jeans for a mini skirt and flats.
THE STORY BEHIND THOSE BROWS
“These brows are from my Dad. He probably has some of the thickest eyebrows I have ever seen! Don’t let them fool you, a lot of maintenance has to go into them unfortunately! They aren’t the cheapest asset to have, haha! In regards to product, I don’t need to fill them in, but simply use a clear eyebrow gel or some hairspray to keep them in place,” Brooke says. f there is one story that transcended all the political and social dialogue in Australia during 2017, it was the journey we took towards legalising samesex marriage. For the LBGTQI community it was a celebration of their love and rights, and for the nation, it was a major leap towards equality and fairness for all. Officially signaling the beginning of a more inclusive Australia. This win belongs to us all and is reflective of the Australian culture – fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect for all of its citizens. In partnership with Spicers Peak Lodge, we are celebrating everything that this pivotal moment in our nation’s history stands for. Style is a strong believer in equal rights, and we’re proud to present our first ever cover featuring a samesex couple. 3 Months Before Get serious about skincare. The occasional cleanse here, and less-than-enthusiastic scrub there, is simply not going to cut it. Even if you’re fairly happy with your skin, now’s the time to implement a consistent regime. Consider consulting an expert dermatologist or making monthly facial appointments if you’d like to have dark spots and pigmentation treated.

1 Month Before Invest in a Keratin treatment for your hair to up the shine factor, get your eyebrows professionally shaped and get that tan situation sorted. Opting for a spray tan just before your wedding can be risky. Like a knight in shining armour, this is where gradual tanners come to the rescue. Start now so you have time to figure out exactly how often you need to apply gradual tan to achieve perfect sun-kissed skin. If you’re considering eyelash extensions, now’s the time. Modern
LOVE
A (somewhat) rational modern woman’s approach to Valentine’s Day.
S
hop windows fill with pink and red hearts, Facebook ads urge you to shower your lover with expensive gifts and Hallmark clichés reign supreme: Valentine’s Day is on the horizon once again. Despite the plethora of things that have changed since this time last year, the expectations of February 14 remain exactly the same. In fact, not much has changed at all since we started celebrating Saint Valentine’s martyrdom back in the fourteenth century. Most of us have the introspective ability to see the commercialised version of Valentine’s Day for what it is – a ploy to sell chocolate and overpriced roses. It’s not all bad though. Although Valentine’s Day is mostly just a repetitive series of obligatory gestures, expectations and inevitable disappointment, it does give us a chance to stop and smell the metaphorical roses. Love is beautiful. It’s intimate, complex and fills us with the kind of giddy joy that’s mostly reserved for five year-olds holding pink fairy floss. It’s finding someone who makes your soul happy. Love gives you the confidence to actually write that previous sentence, knowing how horrendously trite it sounds.
V-Day is more than just an excuse for freshly loved-up couples to grope each other in public. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in the love bubble of a new romance, sitting pretty with your long-term sweetheart or enjoying the unadulterated pleasure of starfishing across the entire bed that comes with being single. February 14 isn’t an “entry by invitation only” affair; it’s for everyone. When it comes to actually celebrating Valentine’s Day, think beyond the basics. The most romantic gifts will always be the most thoughtful. Whether it’s for your partner, best friend or your “this might actually be going somewhere” Tinder date – don’t just follow the formula. Be original, thoughtful and imaginative. Don’t think of Valentine’s Day as an obligation, but instead an opportunity to remind ourselves of all the little things we can do to show intimacy and sincere affection to those we love. Buying someone an expensive piece of jewellery doesn’t make up for being an awful companion the other 364 days of the year. Throw the store bought roses in the bin. Turn off your phone and give your person your whole self. Listen. Kiss tenderly. Say “I love you”. Actually mean it.

THE NAKED WHISKY BAR Over 300 whiskies adorn the shelves of this Woolloongabba bar. Hidden within the Morrison Hotel, you’ll find at least one bottle from every Australian distillery, a whopping 18 Aussie drops in total.
Whisk(e)y ROMANCE Nothing says romance like a tipple for two. Champagne is for celebrating, but whisky is for lovers, writes Jade Horrobin.
Sipping a sparkling or two with your beau may be as synonymous with Valentine’s Day as Cupid himself, but as with many of February 14’s cliché tropes, some rules are made to be broken. Valentine’s Day is a time to cheers to love, and there’s no better way to do that than clinking together two glasses of Glenlivet on the rocks. While champagne is the elixir of giggles
and dancing, whisky is the beverage you sip when wistful gazes and dark romance are on the menu. Whether you’re partial to a whiskey (Irish and American drops) or a whisky (Scottish, Japanese and Aussie tipples) is irrelevant. Brisbane is overflowing with incredibly stocked bars that are guaranteed to have you seeing through rose-coloured glasses this Valentine’s Day.
THE GRESHAM Sinking into a deep chesterfield couch for two while slowly sipping a whisky or three is a foolproof recipe for romance. The whisky cocktails are a stellar option for those not quite up to sipping it straight.
COBBLER Sure to keep you entertained for hours, Cobbler is a West End bar. This side street bar is the epitome of cool. Keep an eye out for their annual Valentine’s Day event and bring along your lover or “friend” for an afternoon filled with trillions of tipples to try.

Trousers are on the rise
Navigating the world of jewellery sales
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, what better way to celebrate all things love than to show you how to add those romantic touches to your soirée? Whether you’re creating an intimate dinner for two or a wedding for two hundred, these tips are a sure-fire way to create the perfect romantic atmosphere for your special day. Nothing says romance like the warm glow of candlelight and lots of it! Try adding pillar candles in vases of varied heights to your table – it will create a softness in the room and make even the largest of function spaces feel intimate. Want to give the traditional pink and red Valentine’s Day colour palette a new twist? Deep berry tones and smoky purples contrasted against blush pinks and soft apricot will create a sophisticated colour palette with depth. Incorporating these tones into your floral arrangements will stand out in your guest’s memories.
The high-waisted trouser is circling back into fashion. Men are getting their trousers tailored to sit higher, a vintage look reminiscent of a bygone era. Fashion labels are running the line between formal wear and casual wear, and the runways are surging with this high-waist sensation, which is currently a major source of inspiration in men’s fashion. More men are starting to appreciate the personality that your style can express; chasing individuality and something a little different, these high-waisted styles are booming. Not only does the trouser itself offer a new look, but the styling opportunities it opens up are endless. Low-rise trousers will always have a place in the tailored world but for those who want to be a little adventurous – high-waisted is the way to go. As long as the lines and shape flatter your body and style – there is no reason not to bring back an old school look.
Want to sell your unwanted jewellery but aren’t sure how to go about it? Here are some tips to get you started: The first step is to obtain a current valuation certificate so that you know what you have and its potential worth in today’s market based on a percentage of the value. Prepare your jewellery for sale like you would a house – invest in some minor cosmetic improvements like cleaning and polishing and where possible, undertake small repairs so that your jewels look attractive and saleable. The next step is to choose a selling platform that you feel comfortable with. Generally speaking, you will receive the best price for your jewellery by selling it privately to another member of the public, for example a friend or a family member. If you are comfortable with online trading platforms, then eBay or Gumtree could also be a good option.

Can’t stop that mercury rising
Keep your stress levels down
The long and the short (sighted) of it
Summer has certainly arrived in Brisbane. As the mercury rises, so too does the interest in cold brew coffee. In the past, hot coffee sales lagged during our hot summers and rose again during the winter months. However, the love of a good cold brew is alive and kicking in our town, attracting a new audience of youngsters, millennials and hipsters who are now making this their drink of choice. The Cold Brew preparation involves steeping coffee grinds in ambient water for twelve hours, creating a delicious concentrate that can then be diluted with water, milk or sweetener added before bottling. This process creates a very different flavour profile to hot coffee, which is less acidic with more variance in sweetness. At Wolff Coffee Roasters we are delighted to offer a range of Cold Wolff as our cold brew alternative. Bottled, iced cold and ready to go. Enjoy!
Planning an event can be a stressful ordeal. Here are some tips for how we manage the stress surrounding events: Make a checklist: This is vital to the success of any event. It is also super satisfying to physically cross things off a list. Delegate: If you are lucky enough to have a team around you, delegating tasks based on your team’s expertise helps take some of the pressure off. Allowing you to concentrate on other areas. Deadlines: With so many moving cogs to an event, it is imperative to set strict deadlines for each sector. Setup: Allow as much time as possible to set up an event. Don’t be afraid to ask your venue for early access. Calculate your timings and, if possible, add an extra hour. Smile: There are so many ways to destress but at the end of the day, as long as you are able to smile and release some endorphins, you are doing well.
Myopia is a common condition that affects millions of Australians. Patients experience blurred vision at long distances and generally require glasses, contact lenses or surgery to correct the problem. Most young myopic patients will experience increasing blur as the eyeball grows longer. Lenses required for higher prescriptions are aesthetically poor and more expensive. In 2018 there are a number of myopia control strategies aimed at reducing the rate of myopic progression in children. Specialised spectacle lenses, hard contact lenses, soft contact lenses and specially compounded eye drops are all proven strategies for myopia control in children. The take-home message? Early intervention is key. Regular eye testing is a must for young people with blurred vision or myopic parents.

Local school with a global outlook With cultural literacy and international excursions, St Margaret’s is doing things differently. Preparing students to engage with and operate in an increasingly global world is an essential competency schools must impart. Core to this is cultural literacy and expanding the horizons of students to develop this global way of thinking. St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Ascot is committed to providing the right opportunities and environment in which to achieve this. “Whilst we are in one sense a very local school, located in a beautiful and safe and secure enclave in Brisbane’s inner north, we

draw students from all over Brisbane, and, being a boarding school, from all over Australia and the world,” says Principal Ros Curtis. “This diversity adds a cultural richness to our smaller sized local school, creating a unique sense of community and enhanced cultural awareness.” In addition, there are many opportunities for students to gain overseas experience, as well as language trips and music tours.
Primary students can participate in a cultural trip to Japan, while the school’s unique Global Exchange Program offers year 10 students the chance to study for a term in one of ten schools worldwide. Other opportunities include language trips and music tours. Families can learn more at the school’s Open Day on Saturday, March 10. ST MARGARET’S P 3862 0777 STMARGARETS.QLD.EDU.AU

alking into the perfectly positioned Queenslander on a corner in Kangaroo Point, a pink swept skyline made for the perfect evening. Banter Bar, owned by Craig Singleton, recently opened its doors with a fresh, fun and youthful demeanour. Born with the love of locals in mind, Banter is an eye-catching venue suited to every occasion. The polished yet textured weatherboard flooring, rose gold accents, neon blue features and white wall canvas most certainly set the expectation for some fine fish and chips – Hamptons Style. The bar is open and inviting and sets the pace for an evening of delving into craft beer or a cucumber gin spritz and a plate filled with beer battered chips. The wine list was carefully curated and the half bottles of champagne were a delight to see on the menu! With experienced seafood chef Daniel Miletic at the helm, the food was guaranteed to keep us coming back. The catch of the day was kingfish, an all-time favourite of mine. It had a perfect crispy delicate skin and was served with chips, dill-infused tartare sauce and a Greek salad. Before that though, there had to be half a dozen seasonal oysters with a pomegranate vinaigrette as well as the classic prawn cocktail with crisp cos lettuce, fresh prawns and drool-worthy seafood sauce for the entrée. Back to the mains – the seafood taster is a great option for the indecisive diner who appreciates all manner of great food. Filled PAGE 48

with battered prawns, calamari, scallops and baby whiting fillets, it was to die for. The batter on the seafood was filled with flavour and perfectly highlighted the seafood. When coming to the end of the platter, mac and cheese stole our attention in the sides selection, and let me tell you, the carbs were worth it. Dessert was not needed, but how do you go past a deep-fried Mars bar and a signature pavlova, so dainty and light. The Mars bar was gooey, hot and just as heavenly as the pavlova. The perfect end to a great dining experience. Make sure your next meal has a side of Banter. BANTERBAR.COM.AU

Is it really all in the genes?
Facials usually come with a ‘no pain, no gain’ mantra. However, new HydraFacials are changing the game with the VortexFusion technology that replaces the harsh exfoliation and extractions of traditional facials. The three-step process can reveal new, healthy and rejuvenated skin with very limited downtime. The treatment begins with a cleanse and gentle exfoliation. Debris from pores are extracted with a painless suction technique. The area is then nourished with intense moisturisers to give it back its freshness. To finish, the skin is saturated with antioxidants and peptides to maximise the glow. HydraFacial is a treatment designed to improve skin texture, decongest skin, eliminate enlarged pores and revive dehydrated or oily skin. Immediately following treatment, the skin looks refreshed, hydrated and glowy. The perfect treatment for skin that is due a bit of TLC.
Cutting brows results in unnatural blunt cut brow hairs, this can create inconsistencies and gaps. You want better brows than that! So, number one rule...no cutting or hedging brows with scissors. If you suffer from long, unruly, bulky, wire-like brows there are several techniques that can give you the look you want without going to town with a pair of scissors. The Brow Bar’s Brow Lift-Shaping Experience can tame your eyebrows without cutting them at all. They use a combination of techniques including their secret ‘Brow Debulking’ tweezer method which is a must for fuller-looking weightless brows; while their coveted ‘Brow Tipping’ tweezer procedure lightly feathers, shortens and shapes your long brow hair. You won’t find the use of stencils or cookie-cutter brows at The Brow Bar. Simply free-hand artwork, creating individual, natural, fuller looking brows.
The development of varicose veins is all about your genes. That’s DNA genes, not the blue ones! In 1892 Dr. Osler stated that “varicose veins are the result of an improper selection of grandparents.” Varicose veins develop due to vein incompetence, which is largely caused by leaky valves in the vein. If you have leaky valves, chances are you inherited this from your parents and grandparents. If both of your parents have varicose veins, you have a 90 per cent chance of developing them. Lifestyle choices can help reduce the risk and slow down venous disease for example moderate exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. Thankfully there are now more treatment options available to help get rid of them. With endovenous laser ablation, vein glue and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy even the most severe varicose veins can be treated in a minimally invasive fashion.

Romance and new love at every age
Time to spit the dummy
Decoding the 5 love languages
Love in later life is not something that should be dismissed. The wish for love is a psychological need that happens at 40, 50, and beyond. Although people midlife and later may have some psychological baggage, midlife allows for clarity. One sees the big picture; life is finite and a desire to have fun, friendship, intimacy, and a connection is what really matters. Romantic relationships midlife and beyond are freed from stressors associated with raising children, developing a career, accumulating resources, and accruing novel encounters. The focus is on appreciating experiences and relationships that are pleasurable and meaningful in the moment. You have the relationship you think you deserve, so do the work to make yourself available to romance and love by focusing on what really matters. As Browning said, “Grow old along with me; the best is yet to be.”
A recent newspaper article recommended avoiding cross-contamination with dummies, but should a dummy be adopted at all? Much of our growth and development is occurring in those very early years. The body unfolds its genetic template depending on the function of the soft tissues attached to the bones. Habits like thumb sucking ultimately change the jaw development, facial appearance and may lead to a bad bite. In very early primitive times, our survival depended on breastfeeding. There were no artificial dummies or bottles. The function and soft tissue stimulation is dramatically different between these actions. With breastfeeding, the breast tissue changes shape to fit the function and shape of the mouth but with bottles and dummies, the mouth changes shape to adapt around these artificial devices. Think about the developmental aspects when considering the use of dummies.
Whilst some Valentine’s dates go swimmingly, others can have the appeal of soggy sandwiches. To ensure the date goes well, consider the five languages of love, and which language your date might speak. Acts of Service: This could be anything as simple as opening the door for them. Gifts: These people enjoy giving gifts as much as they do getting them. Physical Touch: This language is not just physical intimacy, but rather closeness and connection such as a hug or holding hands. Words of Affirmation: Being told you are loved, caring and valued can do amazing things for these lovers. Quality Time: These people just want to spend time together, talking, listening, and connecting. Make sure to give them your full undivided attention. So, take the time to understand the love language of your special someone. Trust me, your Valentine’s Day will be better for it.

Wax On, Wax Off In the month that has become known as the month of love, we’re talking Brazilians. Brooke Jesberg and the team at Brooklyn Beauty have literally done bazillions of Brazilians. Which is what you want in a therapist. Experience is the key to great waxing. You do not want any hesitation or inexperience when it comes to hair removal, especially Brazilian waxing. The quicker and more efficient, the better. The pain that’s sometimes associated with waxing is mostly caused by the anxiety and tension you feel in anticipation. The more relaxed you are, the less painful the experience will be. For this reason, the girls at Brooklyn Beauty recommend a little G&T or glass of bubbles at their bar beforehand. The hair to be waxed should be about the length of a grain of rice, to allow the wax to grip around the hair. To prevent ingrown
hairs, exfoliate vigorously but gently the night before and apply a non-perfumed moisturiser. Avoid tight underwear – wear cotton seamless knickers on the day of your wax. For 48 hours after your Brazilian wax, avoid anything starting with the letter S – sport, sweat, sun, sauna and solariums. And whatever you do, don’t exfoliate the waxed area for one week afterwards. If it is your first time waxing, or a long time since your last wax, refrain from shaving for at least two weeks before your appointment. After your first wax, it is recommended to wax every three to four weeks. Then go home and throw your razors away, because you’ll never have to shave again. As the ancient proverb goes, ‘new year, new me’. Balayage is nothing new, but the technique has evolved and moved away from the heavy two-toned effect into a more three-dimensional effect with the contrast in the colours being a lot softer. The lighter tones are much higher and spill through to the rest of the hair, to create movement and texture. There’s no denying that balayage is the ideal colour for summer, but it’s best to have it applied by an expert.

That Hamptons feeling Style My Home expands as demand for Hamptons style grows.
A
n Australian furniture and décor retailer, Style My Home is inspired by all things Hamptons. Originating in Sydney, they’ve made the move to Brisbane, recently opening their doors in Newstead in February 2017 and Noosaville just last month. We spoke to one of their most loved customers, Kristy Giumelli, who has recently built and furnished a dreamy Hamptons family home, to get some tips. How can we achieve the Hamptons aesthetic? Remember to leave room in the budget for wall panelling or wainscoting to take your space to another level. Plus, lots of doors and windows to let in plenty of natural light and bring the outdoors in. When decorating use natural fibres and textures and choose coastal colours such as blue and white. Add classic furniture and lighting pieces that will stand the test of time. What’s your favourite new piece in the house? I adore the ‘Bobbin’ linen and oak armchairs as they are so comfortable and timeless. Also the Jessica glass display cabinet I have used in the main bathroom. What’s your top tip to minimise spiralling costs? I would have to say, preplanning is crucial. I have designed the entire space from start to finish and I am so happy with how it’s all turned out. I took control of ordering and buying absolutely everything and I think this kept the cost down immensely – especially if you have expensive taste like I do! I have been speaking to our suppliers and STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
Style My Home in particular for more than a year throughout the build. I think the best decision I made was to build in their beautiful cabinets into the wall and I also used their consoles as vanities. We are so thrilled with the overall result and it was less than 50 per cent of custom cabinetry. What was your favourite aspect of working with Style My Home? My experience has been exceptional from start to finish. They have the most beautiful range of furniture and décor, but the stand out for me
was their personalised service. The in-store team is so accommodating and helpful – I will be a lifelong customer! STYLE MY HOME 32 DOGGETT ST, NEWSTEAD P 3666 0324 4B/1 GIBSON RD, NOOSAVILLE P 5447 1972 STYLEMYHOME.COM.AU

KOTOR’S CATHEDRAL OF ST TRYPHON
MONTENEGRO
A
LADY OF THE ROCKS
ll the little coastal towns along this winding and protected part of the Adriatic Sea have a similar theme. Orange rooftops stacked from the shore to the amazingly high and rugged mountains. The fortified town of Kotor itself, thought to be built in 168 BC and later fortified in the early Middle Ages, is equally as spectacular as the entrance of the bay. A few steps through the ancient arched gateway we found Kotor’s Cathedral of St Tryphon standing proudly in the centre of the main square and surrounded by quaint cafés and restaurants. We stopped for a coffee in the square for a rest and one of my favourite pastimes – people watching. Afterwards, we headed into the labyrinth of cobbled streets and laneways. Discovering tiny spaces for doorways and stairs to where the locals live and even tinier spaces for street-level shops below. Offering everything from ‘I Love’ t-shirts and souvenirs to antique rugs. If you love cats, then this medieval town is the place for you. They’re not my favourite animal, but how can you resist the descendants of seafaring felines that bask in their hundreds beneath the morning sun. Balancing lazily on tiny windowsills or lolling around on cool cobblestones in the

shadow of wedged-together buildings and towering church steeples. After our maze adventure amongst the narrow thoroughfares with lines of fluttering laundry above, we went to the lido where we discovered a bustling boat-hire trade. Available by the hour, half-day, or full-day. We opted for a halfday speedboat tour with our very own handsome Montenegrin skipper. He sped us away to the Blue Cave on the Lustica Peninsula, a few hours boat ride from the Old Town. The iridescent blue in the cave is created from sunlight hitting the sandy seabed and reflecting up through the oh so clear water, just divine to dive into. We then sped back to Perast, a tiny township not far along the coast from Kotor. With its palm tree-lined lido and lively restaurants and cafes along the waterfront. We were there to visit the unique and quaint Our Lady of the Rocks church – jutting out of the sea on a manmade islet a literal stone’s throw from Perast’s waterfront. With the first stone thought to have been laid in 1452, the little church and museum sporting vibrant blue domes, were a welcome calm away from the busy tourist crowds on the mainland. Montenegro, meaning black mountain, is anything but … its mountains are rugged and majestic, its shoreline villages vibrant and bustling. It’s a must-do destination where old is cool – and cats are cooler! FEBRUARY 2018
