Love
YOURSELF
Showing ourselves self-love has never been more important. Gold Coastbased health coach, Ange Simson, is on a mission to help you find your happiness. WORDS BY GRACIE CLOUGH
B
etween running a business and taking care of her family, Ange Simson knows life can be a juggling act. She founded The Gratitude Project in order to help women shift their perception on health and improve their relationship with themselves. Tell us about your journey and why you founded The Gratitude Project. ANGE: I used to suffer from awful migraines, and when I was pregnant with my first daughter I realised that not being able to function was not an option. I went and saw a doctor who had a holistic view on health and she got me eating more whole foods. I had that realisation that food can help how you feel, and I wanted to share that with people. What does self-love mean to you? I put this into two categories. Self-care is the things that make you feel good like doing yoga. Self-love is the way you speak to yourself. When you’re practising self-love it’s all about being mindful of how you speak to yourself and speaking to yourself in a way that makes you work towards feeling the way you want to feel. What are your best tips for women who want to incorporate more self-love and self-care rituals into their daily lives? Journaling is a great place to start. I recommend people start by writing down three things they’re grateful for or three things they’re proud of themselves for. Usually we end the day by thinking of the things we didn’t do right. So, taking the time out to focus on what you did well and the moments that were good in your day helps. Schedule time for self-care so it doesn’t fall down your list of priorities! It’s also important to know that selflove is something you have to work at. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
What are your own rituals? I go on a beach walk every day, it’s non-negotiable. So is spending time with my kids and loved ones. I do things that take up more time in the evening, while my kids are asleep, like journaling and reflecting. What are your favourite body-loving recipes for busy women? A lot of women struggle with chocolate and sugar cravings, so it’s easy to get packaged foods. My recipe books on my website are full of sweet treats that are full of superfoods. It’s not about thinking ‘what can I grab quickly’ but taking time and using it as an act of self-care by getting in the kitchen. For me, I can make a month’s worth of treats in half an hour! What is the core of The Gratitude Project? It’s about helping women take control of where their life goes. The site is to help empower women and improve the way they feel every day, and mostly their relationship with themselves. Keep up with Ange at @gratitude_project and the-gratitude-project.com PAGE 5

EDITOR’S NOTE Ahhh the LOVE issue, so named to coincide with Valentine’s Day. This month we shot our cover and fashion pages at The Westin Brisbane, which just quietly, offers many romantic options for those wishing to treat their partner (or perhaps indulge yourself!) Why not? If you haven’t yet checked out their day spa, swim up bar (a personal fave) or restaurant, add it to your priority list right away. It’s safe to say, The Westin Brisbane is fast becoming one of Brisbane’s most popular luxury hotels. Our fashion partner this month is Indooroopilly Shopping Centre – how romantic is this gorgeous Morrison dress? It’s timeless items like this that will easily take you from a sunset picnic in the park to cocktails by the bar this Valentine’s Day. In this issue we also talk to three Brisbane couples about how they manage the joys and (sometimes) tribulations of their marriages and relationships. We thank Kayla Boyd, Chontel Duncan and Rosie Luik (and hubbies) for sharing their raw and honest stories. As always, we love to share the love here at Style, no matter the day or special occasion – remembering that it’s just as important to share the love outward, as it is inward.

UNCONDITIONAL Three Brisbane couples share how hardship and pain has helped them to strengthen their relationship. WORDS BY LAURA FRENDON
“W E genuinely believe that our
marriage is unbreakable.”
W
hen we make our vows to our significant other, we promise to stick by them through the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly, the heart-warming and the gut-wrenching. We make a deal to stick things out no matter how hard they get, and to never let accidental shopping sprees, choosing what to have for dinner, or skipping ahead in a TV show you promised to watch together get in the way of living a happy life. But, as we all know, life sometimes enjoys throwing things at us from all angles to test just how strong our relationship is, and these three couples know all too well how challenging these bumps in the road can be. We chat to them about some of the biggest trials of their relationship, how they persevered, and how they’ve managed to grow, learn, and become stronger and closer as a couple. Kayla and Darius Boyd are no strangers to scrutiny on their relationship. Living in the public eye, every part of their day-to-day life can fall under the scrutiny of watching fans and followers. PAGE 8
But what many don’t know, is that the heartache and pain they’ve been through has only helped them to cement their marriage, in the knowledge that things can hit rock bottom, and they’ll still pick themselves up and continue to do life together. Kayla and Darius’ marriage broke down publicly in 2014, with Darius walking away from his career to undergo professional help, and Kayla walking away from the marriage entirely. “It was one of the hardest periods of my life, having to watch someone you cared for struggle,” she says. “When he made the decision to turn his life around and worked on bettering himself, we reconnected.” Since then, they’ve become parents to a beautiful daughter, Willow, which Kayla says has been her favourite adventure with Darius so far. “It’s been the most incredible experience – we’ve been able to connect on a deeper level and have a new-found respect for one another.” Despite going through hell and back in
such a short period of time, Kayla is adamant that she and Darius are stronger than ever. Their love has conquered more than its fair share of battles, and is only going to continue to flourish as the years go by. “We’ve been through what would tear most couples apart. We’ve come out the other side and have been able to connect on a deeper level – our love for one another was reborn,” she says. “Sometimes it takes the elements you think you love the most, to be taken away from you in order to realise what is most important in life.”
FEBRUARY 2019
Running a business with your partner is always going to be difficult, even at the best of times. But when you live and breathe what you do every day, even the biggest of roadblocks can be tackled with ease. Chontel and Sam Duncan have built a fitness empire in the form of HIIT Australia. Each and every day, they’re helping people all over Australia to become stronger and healthier, one sweat session at a time, and encouraging them to transform their lives for the better. While owning and running a business together has its challenges, Chontel admits the biggest challenge she and Sam have faced together was in the initial stages of dating. “A challenge for us was respecting our individual journeys as well as the one we were on together,” she says. “We’ve worked really hard over the years to prioritise our relationship, which hasn’t always been easy, but still to this day we are so in love and couldn’t think of a life without the other.” Chontel credits their continued success, both in and out of their relationship, to sharing the same values and having a strong view of what they want their life together to look like. “We hope to continue to grow our family our goal is a busy household with a full dinner table, busy Christmas mornings, jam-packed holidays and many family traditions. These are the things that represent wealth and happiness to us.” With such busy lives and two small children, it can be quite difficult for Chontel and Sam to connect as a couple. However, they manage to make time here and there to get some much STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
“CHALLENGES don’t
always have to be viewed as a negative, they are a way to strengthen who we are and allow us to grow as individuals and as a couple.” needed downtime, despite almost always being in work mode. “We make time when the boys are down, whether that be at night watching our favourite TV program together or on the weekend during the boys’ day nap, where we lay out the back and relax.” With Chontel sharing a lot of her everyday life to almost 600K followers on Instagram, she believes it’s important to always be real and honest about her relationship and family, and to be as transparent as possible across her platforms. “I always try to share positive messages through my social media channels, and I hope that by sharing our values we can help others to focus on the important components of a relationship.” PAGE 9
“W e know that no matter what, we have each other’s backs.”
Rosie Luik and her husband Adrian have a pact that’s like no other. Married for almost 13 years, they’ve been through the birth of six children, severe illness, and the loss of a business. They’ve stuck by each other while rebuilding themselves, each taking turns at pursuing their passion and keeping their family happy and healthy. Out of the good and bad times throughout their time together Rosie says she looks back on becoming a parent with Adrian as one of her most cherished memories together. “Becoming parents meant so much to both
PAGE 10
of us – it’s something we’ve always wanted from a young age.” As for challenges, Rosie and Adrian have been through every family’s worst nightmare, suffering the loss of their business over a number of years after the GFC. To make things even worse, at a time when they were attempting to rebuild and kick-start their career into a new direction, Rosie became severely ill, almost losing her life after suffering medical complications after surrogacy and giving birth to her fourth child. She was out of action for quite some time, with ongoing
surgeries and procedures, and mountains of medical bills putting pressure on their marriage and four young children. While it sounds almost impossible to deal with, Rosie says it was the love they all shared for each other that kept her going. “We reminded each other that what doesn’t tear us apart only makes us stronger as a couple, and we got on with looking for ways to move forward.” These days, there’s pretty much nothing that Rosie and Adrian can’t get through, but admit that a lot of compromise is needed in order to keep things running smoothly. “Compromise is, and always has been, a massive part of our relationship, and working together as a team to adapt to whatever is going on helps us to find solutions, rather than escalate things further by arguing.” Their continued strength together is not only credited to going through such a hard time together, but also allowing each other to grow as individuals and as a couple. “We understand each other and the way that we like to be loved and treated. It’s the little things we do to let one another know that we care.” FEBRUARY 2019

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… Spend a day in the shoes of Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Matthew Peters. 05:15 Alarm goes off. Exercise with my two older children until 06:00. Stove-top espresso machine packed and put on the gas. 06:30 Out the door with my two eldest children for school drop off. Ten minutes of conversation - mainly with my daughter while my son checks the cricket scores on his phone… 07:00 Ward round at the hospitals. I often have in-patients at both Brisbane Private Hospital and Northwest Private Hospital. Comfort, movement, observations, medications, drains, garments, wounds - there are many elements to consider with my patients, all of which are reviewed to ensure the optimal outcome is achieved. 08:00 Consulting at Valley Plastic Surgery – this place is my main hub. Dr Ray Goh and I bought the premises in 2013, redesigned it in 2014, and then opened the doors in 2015. Consulting involves meeting new people, reviewing immediate post-operative patients upon discharge from hospital, and reviewing longer-term patients to assess the outcome of my surgery. Communication is key in my line of work and I aim to foster an open line with every patient I meet. 12:00 The front-desk staff worry about me not eating, so procure some food and a coffee for me from a nearby café. I eat this while replying to emails from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. I’m the Director of Plastic Surgery there, and have to address issues regularly - I don’t know how I would’ve managed private practice and that position before the advent of the iPhone. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
12:15 In the car and off to Brisbane Private Hospital for an afternoon operating list. Car time usually gives me an opportunity to make phone calls to patients if there is an urgent result, or to staff at the Royal Brisbane if required. I get changed into surgical scrubs, say hello to the nursing and Anaesthetic team, and then move on to meet, review and mark-up the surgical plan for the first patient. Once done, I usually grab another coffee and some water and then undertake a five-minute surgical scrub to clean my hands. Depending on the cases booked, the operating list can last anywhere into the late hours of the night.
“Communication is key in my line of work and I aim to foster an open line with every patient I meet.”
20:00 Post-op ward round to make sure there are no concerns before heading home. 20:30 On the phone in the car, usually to a mentor of mine or my brother. I speak to both of them almost daily. 21:00 Home. My wife is an Eye Surgeon and is often arriving home around the same time. We have four kids and an amazing team of nannies they give us a rundown of the day at home and have usually prepared some food. We eat our food and chat about the day we’ve both had. Our lines of work often have similarities that allow us to debrief and de-stress. 23:00 Bedtime. Room To Grow Change is in the air and these developments are set to shape Brisbane in 2019. BY SOPHIE VENZ ARTIST IMPRESSION VIA FORTITUDE MUSIC HALL

e’re only two weeks into the year, but there are no doubts that 2019 is setting itself up to be the best year yet. There are plenty of exciting bars, restaurants and cafés opening their doors all over the city, as well as a cityscape that continues to change and evolve. As much as we love to report on new restaurants and bars, it’s these exciting new developments that have us eagerly looking forward to Brisbane’s future. 728 Ann Street | Fortitude Valley Have you ever wanted to watch Ed Sheeran live at an elevated car park in the middle of the Valley? That concept may be too far-fetched for your daydreams – but it isn’t for LVS Nominees Pty Ltd. The Seymour family company purchased 728 Ann Street, the 4,572sqm elevated car park site, back in 2013 for over $44 million. While no developments have taken place yet, it’s become increasingly obvious that its positioning makes it the ideal candidate for a large entertainment-based development. So maybe Ed Sheeran on a rooftop is a dream that isn’t actually too far from reality…
Brisbane Metro | Across Brisbane With most modern cities boasting a metro system, it’s no surprise that Brisbane is updating their public transport offerings with its own Brisbane Metro Subway System. Already in development, the system will see reliable high-frequency transport throughout the CBD and inner-suburbs, from Woolloongabba to Herston. With an aim to reduce CBD congestion, cut travel times, and the ability to better direct public transport, the Metro will be able to carry up to 30,000 passengers per hour. Fortitude Music Hall | Fortitude Valley Located in the middle of Fortitude Valley’s Brunswick Mall, the long-awaited new development is set to open its doors by July. The Fortitude Music Hall is the brainchild of former Powderfinger bassist and Triffid owner, John Collins and Australian music entrepreneur Paul Pittico, who is best known for his work in organising Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival. With Live Nation signing on as a “principle partner” in the project, investors have assured the venue will attract many big-name acts. PAGE 15

Slip into something comfortable
Aimee Kendall, creator and designer of Aimee-Cherie Intimates, chats to us about ethical fashion and comfortable lingerie for every woman’s body.
STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
How was Aimee-Cherie Intimates started? It started in my Mum’s garage in Perth about five years ago. It was a side job while I was working at a couture bridal shop, and with the help of social media, things started to take off. I took a turn into lingerie as my graduate collection included gowns that had sheer tops which needed some modesty for the young models. Also, I personally have never liked wearing underwired bras with padding, so started making little bralettes, leading to a business model in Aimee-Cherie Intimates. Who did you create these pieces for? Our pieces have always reflected my personal taste; underwear that is beautiful to own and to wear, but in no way over the top or impractical. Bralettes don’t have a wire in them – they are purely lace, or in our case, sometimes ribbed cotton or power mesh combined with soft elastics. They aren’t designed for a tonne of support, but as someone that has a small cup size, I’ve always wanted to design something that’s flattering and suitable to my wardrobe. We’ve recently added more cup sizes to our range though, which all come with adjustable bands, so you can mix and match depending on your cup size. What’s different about your pieces compared to the ones we already have in our wardrobe? We keep it simple without compromising on quality or fit. Aimee-Cherie Intimates is made completely in house in Australia, and actually a lot of it by me. It’s lingerie that’s ethically made, lasting years when treated with care. Our cups are designed to give you that perfect rounded shape, and the bands are completely adjustable, so nothing ever digs in. The same goes for our new bottoms, which can be worn under your slinkiest silk skirt without a line in sight, by simply
adjusting the side bands to create your perfect fit. We’re not mass produced, and we’re not here for the sake of having a fashion label with a cool Instagram account. Why is it so important for you to keep your business completely based in Australia while maintaining a sustainable and ethical brand? It’s been easy for me to run the business completely out of Australia, and therefore also maintain my support of our local industry. I think it hits home for me as I’m quite hands on during the production of our collections. I have a lot of respect for people that have the talent to produce a piece of clothing from start to finish. I want to be able to support people locally where I can, just the way that so many Australians have supported my dream and business. Is Valentine’s Day the perfect opportunity to treat yourself to a new intimates set? Absolutely! But I don’t save my pretty bralettes or cute bottoms for weekends or special datees. While they can be a beautiful touch to a lightweight slip or singlet on a night out, they also make you feel just as good getitng up in the morning and mixing together a set for under your work uniform, or jeans and band tee. What’s coming up for Aimee-Cherie Intimates in 2019? We’ve recently relocated from Perth to Melbourne, so are currently getting to know a new city and meet people we previously only knew via email. I’m excited to collaborate with more creatives, and release styles that we’ve been developing over the last few months, including a new bridal concentrated capsule collection. While 2019 feels big already, I’m so ready for new challenges and having a go at things that possibly didn’t work out in 2018 as I’d planned. My motto for 2019 is to do better, not bigger. PAGE 19

THE TASTE OF THE
Amalfi Coast
COTOLETTA DI VITELLO
The 4th generation restaurateur who followed his heart to Brisbane, bringing the magic of the Amalfi Coast with him. The Restaurant
T
here is nothing more quintessentially Italian than dining seaside on the Amalfi Coast. Fresh seafood, seasonal produce, local flavours – these are the culinary hallmarks of the Amalfi Coast. One iconic establishment of the Amalfi Coast is Marina Grande, a 4th generation family restaurant that is known for the best views (and dishes) of the region. This is where Arturo Buonocore, owner of Teneriffe and Chelmer restaurants Tocco Italiano, hails from and the legacy he continues to cultivate right here in Brisbane. Despite his deep love for his homeland, Arturo decided to follow his wife, an Australian woman, and settle down in Australia. Working alongside Michelin-starred Executive Head Chef Enzo Ninivaggi, Tocco Italiano is his way of sharing the traditional flavours and dishes of the Amalfi Coast here in Brisbane. Cooking with lots of love and passion, dining at Tocco Italiano is like sitting down to a family meal at nonna’s house.
The Experience When you dine at Tocco Italiano, alterations to dishes are not allowed. This is the decision of a man who lives and breathes Italian cuisine and PAGE 30
wants you to experience dishes that are as authentic as possible. Trust your taste buds in their hands. You won’t regret it.
The Food Befitting the Campania region Arturo hails from, the menu offers a wide range of vegetarian options. If you’re a vegetarian, this will obviously be a delight; however, even if you’re a strident meat-eater, you’ll find these dishes so wonderfully prepared that you won’t even notice the absence of meat. One such example is the Spaghetti al Pomodoro with San Marzano tomato sauce, which is a classic, untouched grandmother’s recipe. Another standout dish that is well worth your appetite is the Risotto con Rape Rosse. The vibrant purple colour is a result of the rich beetroot reduction, which is complemented by the sharp flavour of blue cheese. Keeping in theme with their Amalfi Coast origins, the Scialatielli Costiera Amalfitana is a homemade egg pasta with seafood ragu, traditional to the Amalfi Coast. Moving away from pasta-based dishes for a moment, the Cotoletta di Vitello (traditional Milanese breadcrumbed veal served with pickled vegetables) shines light on a side of
Italian cuisine not often seen in Brisbane. If you enjoy seafood, the Aragostelle con pak Choi is a tantalising, cross-cultural combination of Moreton bay bugs, Asian pak choi, and buffalo mozzarella. And of course, what is an Italian feast without handmade desserts? Whether you choose a selection of cheeses, the devilishly indulgent Tutto Cioccolato (chocolate platter), or what I am calling Brisbane’s best Tiramisu, Tocco Italiano’s dessert menu is a fast track to nirvana. SWEET
5 minutes with General Manager of Ovolo The Valley, Daniel Meek. Where are you from? I grew up on a farm just outside Blayney before relocating to Bathurst when I was eight. I moved to Ghana in West Africa at the age of 12 where I lived on a remote mining site studying via distance education through Dubbo, before returning to Bathurst to finish the last three years of high school at All Saints College. How long have you been in the hotel industry? 12 years - 2 countries, 6 cities, 7 hotels and 3 redevelopments. How did you get into it? I studied a Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality at Southern Cross University in Lismore before starting my first hotel job as a Hotel Management Cadet with Rydges in Queenstown, New Zealand. What do you love most about your industry? Working with truly amazing and passionate people - no single day is the same and always full of excitement. What can guests expect at Ovolo The Valley? A frenzy of rich colour, a hint of quirkiness, commissioned art pieces, vivid wallpaper and playful furniture that radiates personality and a whole lot of fabulous. Personal philosophy on life Always challenge yourself. What do you love most about Brisbane? Brisbane is the perfect mix between country Australia and a vibrant cosmopolitan city. The hospitality scene has come so far in the past few years, becoming known for having some of the best restaurants, bars and hotels in the country with a future brighter and more exciting than ever. Light it up Neon signs are making a resurgence as ‘must-have’ décor, and Benga Designs are leading the way in custom made designs in Brisbane.
D
anny Sinclair created Benga Designs in 2003 with three founding clients, Muffin Break, Jamaica Blue and Brisbane BMW, all of which are still a major part of the business today. Specialising in retail signage for National Franchises and Shopfitters, they also service a diverse range of local and national clients, such as Grilld Burgers, Ferrari, Café 63, HelloWorld, Alpha, Jimmy Rods, Volvo, Burberry, Rydges and CPL just to name a few. The start of the design process is based around the clients logo, and then continues on to reflect who they are and what they do. Every client wants the best value for money, and Benga Designs prides themselves on spending the few extra hours getting things just right, without worrying about the money side of things. Benga Designs has recently received an increase in the demand for neon signs, making them believe they’re about to have a comeback in the retail industry. Danny believes this is due to their timeless nature and ability to stand out and grab the attention of passers-by. “Every fitout needs an edge or a look that reflects who they are. Neon has a nostalgic yet natural feel, but at the same time, adds ambience, class and impact.”
While there aren’t any rules as to how and where you should put a neon sign, Danny says there are ways to make them have a greater impact and improve your business interior or exterior. “It must be exposed so you see the glass, see the hand blown artistic features and feel the glow of light that no other light source can reproduce.” In 2019, Danny sees Benga having an influx of neon sign orders, as it’s now more affordable than ever to give your business that ‘wow factor.’ He believes that while LED lighting has tried to replace neon over the last few years, it’s most definitely here to stay. Experience St Margaret’s You’re invited to take a look at the Brisbane girls school leading the way in education. St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Ascot will host its annual Open Day on Saturday 9 March. The occasion will showcase the school’s subjects, Flyers program for elite performers and extracurricular activities, as well as its award-winning academic advising model and development plans for a new sports precinct opening in 2020 – the year the school celebrates its 125th anniversary. Principal Ros Curtis says St Margaret’s enrolments are currently at a historical high due to their holistic approach to education. “We’ve stayed true to the vision of our
founders all those years ago who saw a good education as a means of gifting the students with both the heart and the mind to make good decisions in life.” In 2018, their students achieved exceptional academic results with 41.09% of St Margaret’s OP eligible students receiving an OP 1-5 and 98.63% achieving an OP between 1-15. Their NAPLAN results have also continued to be strong, with St Margaret’s being in the top 15 schools in Queensland in all four year levels in the past two years. Visitors to Open Day will be able to learn
more about the diverse extracurricular opportunities across sport, music, the arts and clubs, such as the Drone Academy and Robotics Club, and will also have a number of opportunities to interact with the St Margaret’s community, including staff, parents, students and Old Girls. Open Day will be held between 9:30am and 12:30pm and guests are invited to register online. St Margaret’s is now confirming enrolments up to 2022. Cold brew coffee just got better
What can your feelings tell you?
It’s time to evolve your style
As a coffee drinker, there is plenty of hype around flavour in the cup. But, have you ever considered the texture as well? The feel, texture, and viscosity of the cup are all of equal importance. Whether it’s a hot or a cold caffeinated beverage, the way the liquid feels in your mouth plays a significant role in your drinking pleasure. With ready to drink coffee on the rise, Wolff Coffee Roasters have texture, flavour, and formula at the forefront of their minds. Cold Wolff offers a barista brewed concoction of delicious flavour and texture in an easy and convenient way, with options including straight black, milk, and sweetened milk all available. Beyond traditional hot coffee and bottled cold brew, there is also a rise of coffee jellies, carbonised ice-creams, and nitrogen infused drinks carving out a larger corner of the coffee beverage space. It is an exciting time to innovate with texture. Watch this space...
Many people allow their feelings to guide what actions they take. For instance, if you’re feeling energetic, you’ll get out and do things. If you’re feeling happy, you’ll enjoy the day. If you’re feeling positive, you’ll make the sale or ask that person out for a date. The reverse is also true. If you’re feeling flat, you’ll stay in or hit snooze. If you’re feeling tired, you’ll sit around doing nothing. If you’re feeling negative, you won’t even try to get out and take the action to get what you want. There is a saying that goes, “Where focus goes...energy flows,” and essentially it means you can exercise your mental power to choose what you focus on. Focus on something positive, or something good that is happening for you. Write down a list of these things, both past, present and things that are coming, and do it sincerely, always being aware of the positive change in the way you feel.
Hopefully by now you have decluttered your wardrobe and know which pieces are your favourites, their estimated life span, and the gaps you still need to fill. It’s now time to give some serious consideration to your style for 2019. Will you stick with the same direction or are you going to evolve? In business it’s often quoted, “if you don’t evolve you die.” While the same can’t be said for your style, it can become irrelevant or boring. Your personal brand is more than your knowledge or expertise – your presentation is very much a part of how people view you. Clients, associates, and friends might expect you to wear certain colours and patterns, so it’s important to change it up and add some excitement into your wardrobe. A subtle change can make the world of difference. If you don’t feel a million dollars every time you put on your clothes, they’re not doing their job.

SMOOCH READY
Method:
Directions:
Get ready to pucker up this Valentine’s Day with our DIY lip scrub recipe.
1. Find an old lip balm/lip scrub tub to re-use. 2. Clean the tub out so that it looks brand new. 3. Mix all of the ingredients together in a small bowl until it resembles a scrub paste. 4. Add organic honey if your lips have been particularly dry. 5. Add peppermint oil for a minty flavour. 6. Voila, an ‘au naturale’ lip scrub for soft, plump, kissable, hydrated lips!
1. Apply scrub on lips with your fingers and scrub away gently to exfoliate and deeply moisturise. 2. Use maximum once a week, as using more often can make your lips over sensitive. 3. Because of the lips’ sensitivity, make sure you don’t scrub lips for longer than around a minute.
What you’ll need 1/2 tsp raw sugar or brown sugar 1/2 tsp olive oil 1/4 tsp coconut oil 1/4 tsp organic honey (optional) 1/4 tsp peppermint oil (optional) PAGE 36

Recover with ease Queensland’s only hotel and hospital in one has recently opened in Brisbane.

hile specific treatment practices and techniques are required for a successful surgery, often the most important part of any procedure, big or small, is the aftercare processes that occur once the patient has been discharged. Essence Suites Taringa and Westside Private Hospital are leading the way when it comes to ensuring patients receive the best possible care after their procedure is complete, and have created a space where patients can easily transfer between the operating room and private accommodation. Brisbane Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Eddie Cheng, owner of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, frequently performs procedures at Westside Private Hospital and believes the opening is a great addition to the hospital, as it allows for a seamless transition from being a patient in a day surgery, to a guest of Essence Suites Taringa. He firmly believes that recovery is just as important as the surgery itself, and looking after yourself post-surgery can help with achieving the desired and planned end result. He is STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
incredibly passionate about patient well-being as well as the care patients receive before, during and after surgery, so is proud to be a part of such an incredible new development. The modern accommodation space is not only for recovering patients, but can be enjoyed for any conventional purpose. Offering a convenient location for local, interstate, and overseas guests, the integrated medi-hotel is making it easier than ever for patients to get back on track after day surgery at Westside Private. The combination of the two spaces also means both rural and Brisbane-based patients will be able to experience the highest quality treatment, as leading nurses and doctors will be able to provide private health services in a more flexible and affordable way. Never again will patients have to worry about planning a way home after undergoing a procedure. It is now easier than ever to relax and recover after surgery in a brand new, beautifully appointed accommodation suite. RISE BlissSilk Silk eye mask $39
BlissSilk Luxury pure silk products for skin & hair by Diana Petrovic What gave you the idea to start your business? I have always been fascinated by this lovely, organic fibre, and have owned many beautiful silk pieces over the years. However, when I purchased a couple of silk pillowcases for myself, I truly fell in love. This sparked the beginning of my research of the amazing benefits silk has to offer for skin, hair and overall wellbeing. What did you do before starting up your brand? I worked for Qantas Airways for 23 years. How did you get the brand up and running? With a lot of hard work, perseverance, research and tremendous support from family and friends. I had to learn how to run a business from scratch – everything from web design, social media, product design and regulations. What are some of the biggest issues you’ve faced while running Bliss Silk? Starting a business from scratch was difficult. The technical side of the business, such as developing a website, and understanding the ins and outs of social media and marketing are all a huge challenge for me. What future plans do you have for your brand? We have wonderful new products and prints coming out and I’m really excited to see if everyone else loves them as much as I do. Any tips for up-and-comers who want to start up a label? Don’t be afraid to give it a go. Do your research, do the work, persevere and don’t give up.

When did you start BeautyXTD? We officially launched our own beauty branded products in November 2018, releasing eight unique, faux mink, reusable strip eyelashes, along with an exclusive eyeshadow palette. Since then, we have continued to expand our business, growing a larger variety of beauty brands and continuing to plan future BeautyXTD products. What did you do before starting your brand? I was in the beauty industry with my own beauty salon. As it grew, I opened my own wholesale lash supplier and trained students to become lash artists. What excites you about your business? I am so excited by all of the possibilities that BeautyXTD has opened. Starting the wholesale store has already given me the opportunity to develop my own products and explore the makeup industry. It has given me the chance to network with amazing people and expand my business. What is the most amazing thing you’ve encountered whilst running Beauty XTD?? Launching the Care Stare Eyeshadow palette was definitely the most exciting part over the past year. It was amazing to see all our hard work come to life and to see how creative people could be with the palette. Any tips for up-and-coming business owners? My main tip to potential entrepreneurs is to take the leap. As long as you have a vision and a plan, everything else can be achieved with hard work. FEBRUARY 2019

Stay golden We chatted to Brooke Jesberg of Brooklyn Beauty Bar to find out her top tips on keeping that summer glow going, even though the holidays are over. How do we get our spray tans to last longer? Getting your body ready is key. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. The better you exfoliate before your spray tan, the better and more even it will be. In order to allow your skin to settle, always book your spray tan for half a day after you exfoliate and shave. It is also important to arrive with a perfectlymoisturised skin base. Sorbelene is a great product to use as it’s water-based, allowing the tan to still penetrate the skin beautifully without those alligator scales! To ensure your tan will last longer, avoid using perfumed or oil based moisturisers. If we’re timing the spray tan for a big event, when will it look best? I always find three showers after application
BROOKE JESBERG
gives the best look. Brooklyn Beauty Bar is renowned for even toned tans. What’s the secret? We’ve developed a unique blending technique for a beautiful, even look, and this is what makes Brooklyn Beauty Bar tans the best. Why do some spray tans suit us better than others? Different spray tans have different PH levels, and using the wrong moisturiser or tan extender can make your tan go orange or even greenish – check with your technician and only use the products they recommend. Tan extenders are great for a longer lingering gorgeous tan. BROOKLYN BEAUTY BAR 5/15 JAMES ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY 61 PETRIE TCE, THE BARRACKS 0421 202 447 BROOKLYNBEAUTYBAR.COM.AU

Normal circulation involves blood carrying oxygen being pumped from the heart into the tissues via arteries, and then returning de-oxygenated blood carrying other waste products from the tissues back to the heart through the veins. Your arteries might be in good health, but if your veins are not working properly and leaking back into the tissues due to varicose veins, you could be at risk of varicose leg ulcers later in life. Walking compresses the deep veins in the leg muscles and this pumps the blood out of the legs. This is the most important mechanism to improve clearance of venous blood out of the legs. If you sit on an aeroplane for a long flight you might be aware of some ankle swelling. People with venous disease will often find relief from their swollen feet and ankles and alleviation of tired and aching legs by elevating their legs at the end of the day.
Our bodies contain millions of microorganisms that are busy working away, ensuring that we stay healthy. They work in harmony with each other, and operate in order to maintain an equal balance between good and bad bacteria. Biofilms are a webbing like structure made up of micro-organisms and a sticky substance where bacteria are organised into a coordinated biological system. When there is an ecological shift away from the balanced environment, due to a sugary and acidic diet or a dry mouth, the biofilms in the mouth can be hard to control. This leads to dental disease such as gingivitis and decay. To maintain a healthy mouth we need to disrupt this unbalanced eco-system. There is currently new dental technology available in the form of gentle Biofilm Disruptors, which take dental hygiene visits to a new 21st century level.
Valentine’s Day is here again, and for all you romantics out there, it’s a time to shower love on the one you love. To make it memorable, find out what love language they speak and then design your special evening all around that. If you’re thinking of buying them a gift, make sure it’s something meaningful. If you’re thinking of spending the evening together, make sure you devote every moment to them. If you’re planning to do an act of service, arrange to do something you know they’ve been meaning to try for a while. With just a few tweaks here and there, you can make Valentine’s Day a day to remember for all the right reasons. And because it comes around every year on the same date, you can continue to make this day a ritual of connection. Being intentional with this day will provide an anchor and build meaning all at the same time, so it will be a win for both of you.

Lift, implant, or both?
Celebrating with your Valentine
Transitioning into the fourth trimester
Gravity, breast feeding, weight changes, and genetics can all contribute to breast appearance over time. Thankfully, there are now modern techniques and technologies available to help restore what was present. Depending on the amount of breast tissue and skin present, where it lies, and the desired appearance, surgical rejuvenation involving lifting and reshaping existing tissue can help to achieve a more youthful look. Whether this is done with implants is case dependent, as they can often lift and fill the skin envelope. If you have too much skin, the nipple position sits too low, or implants are not desired, correction involving wider yet discreet scars can be performed to achieve your desired result while following a thorough and customised treatment plan. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
“I LOVE YOU” is what we all want to hear from our significant other. Loving and being loved is a basic need, and Valentine’s Day is a time to reassess how we nurture our relationship, ensuring we maintain and improve the quality of our bond. Like anything we want to be successful at, relationships require regular, deliberate practice. Building a healthy emotional bank account is critical to relationships, and can be developed by seeking connections (via bids) with your partner, and them positively turning toward your bids. These bids and turns for affection can be expressed in many ways, including kind words and regular praise, gifts and surprises, romantic adventures, quality time together, physical touch, acts of service, or spiritual and soulful experiences and rituals. Use Valentine’s Day this year to reassess your relationship and make strong connections with your significant other.
The time has finally come and your baby is in your arms. While this anticipated event marks the end of your pregnancy, it’s in fact not the end, but rather just the beginning. This is a time that, while incredibly challenging, is very special and holds immense value for both you and your baby. The first few months are all about learning what it means to be a parent, and similarly, your baby is working out what it means to be in this world, and parents need to be aware of the fact that it’s a colossal adjustment for your baby to make. They rely solely on you to make this world a more familiar place. Considering this time as a ‘fourth trimester,’ with just as many changes as the three that have come before it, allows it to be a time of transition, for both parents and babies. Engaging with a midwife to navigate through this ever-changing time is highly recommended.

We chat to Natalie Gruzlewski about being announced as My Holiday Centre’s newest ambassador, and her tips on planning the very best island getaway. What’s your favourite thing about a beach getaway? It’s so easy to slip into holiday mode on a beach getaway. Sun, surf and sand—simplicity at its best. Who’s your favourite person to go travelling with? My husband Jack is great to travel with. We’ve enjoyed many family trips with our daughter, Olivia—from camping to tropical getaways in Fiji and skiing in Japan. What’s one tropical destination everyone should visit at least once? If you like the idea of wining and dining along the French Riviera, but at a fraction of the travel time and cost, make a visit to New Caledonia! Only a 2.5-hour flight from Sydney, this South Pacific paradise is the vibrant, close-to-home archipelago with its feet in the water and heart in Paris. What does being My Holiday Centre’s ambassador mean to you? I chose to partner with My Holiday Centre because they not only create holidays the way I would do them, but they’re proud and passionate about delivering unique and unforgettable experiences for their customers. This brand is forever digging deep to help Australians not only find their perfect holiday, but discover
an amazing way to travel that is truly one of a kind. What do you think is the best thing My Holiday Centre can offer to eager holiday-goers? I love the level of detail that goes into creating every exclusive package, each designed with a level of detail and care that is truly unique. Their dedicated experts hand-pick curated holidays that are bursting with unbeatable value. Their perfectly packaged holidays encompass flights, accommodation and exclusive inclusions that simply cannot be found anywhere else, taking travellers to some of the most renowned resorts around the world. We know it’s a tough choice, but if you had to choose just one, would you go to Hawaii, Fiji, or the Maldives? Fiji is a favourite destination—it has so much to offer. A personal favourite: the beautiful Mamanuca Islands, lying west of Nadi. The diving, snorkelling and surfing are worldclass, and Fijians are some of the most hospitable people in the world. IT’S NOOSA Dubbed ‘The Relaxation Capital’ of Australia, Style’s Editor, Tracy Sinclair, finds that even a short sharp getaway is enough to truly relax and rejuvenate in beautiful Noosa. Friday 2pm We arrive at Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas, located on the forested hillside within Noosa National Park. I’ve stayed here several times before and aside from the breath-taking views across Laguna Bay, I like the location as it forces you to walk every time you want to pop down to Hastings Street. There’s a resort buggy to transport you back and forth, but I personally like the walk, particularly along the tree-lined boardwalk. Our apartment is spacious with modern decor and a fullyequipped kitchen. It also has my hubby’s holiday apartment deal-breaker – a good sized balcony – where we settle in to enjoy the welcome cheese platter with a glass of bubbles and take in the view. Hubby devours the box of Mother Meg’s Almond Butter Balls. Relax-mode is now on! VIEW BY MATT GOLINSKI
Friday 5pm
Saturday 10am
It’s Happy Hour at the resorts View by Matt Golinski restaurant and bar. It’s a large open space overlooking the resort, with chic furnishings, established plants and a laidback tropical feel. And live music! An ex-The Voice contestant is pumping out banger after banger of old school favourites – the ones you can sing along to, which I do, while we enjoy a cocktail. The bar is busy, there’s a friendly vibe and the cocktails are so good! Celebrity chef and Noosa local, Matt Golinski, heads up the kitchen as the hotel’s Food Ambassador and Advisory Executive Chef and the extensive menu features local seasonal produce.
Nothing says ‘relax and treat yourself ’ like a visit to Noosa’s ikatan Spa, a short 15 minute drive from Peppers. The Balineseinspired day spa is set in lush and tranquil gardens and it feels like the world has slowed down around me. The treatment rooms are heavenly and calming – a lot of thought has gone into every detail of this beautiful day spa. I opt for the two hour Nirvana Package which includes a 60-minute facial and 60-minute deluxe pedicure. We start wth a personalised consultation with my Spa Therapist who selects an organic Botanical Facial for me. My facial is best described by the fact that I fall asleep halfway through – it is sooo relaxing and includes deep cleansing, exfoliation, mask and massage to face, neck, décolletage and scalp. She then applies eye cream, moisturiser and a complimentary Inika organic, vegan mineral makeup application for a natural glow and sun protection.
Friday 9pm After dinner we wander down to Hastings Street where we hit up some of the bars and as often happens, we contract ‘first night fever’ and find ourselves in a club. We meet a couple who are travelling around Australia in an RV. They don’t usually stay anywhere for longer than a few days, but they’ve been in the Noosa region for a month now and don’t want to leave. Neither do we, so we bond.
Saturday 8am My hubby has simple needs on holiday – the aforementioned balcony and a buffet breakfast. He’s a big brekkie guy so View’s buffet hits the spot. It’s an impressive spread with plenty of healthy options. PAGE 48

PEPPERS NOOSA RESORT & VILLAS IKATAN SPA
I feel brand new and although I’m pretty sure I’ve dribbled while I slept, my Spa Therapist doesn’t seem to mind (surely she’s seen that before, as that was one of the best facial treatments I’ve ever experienced). After my facial, I’m escorted to the Garden Room (which is surrounded by nature) for a Deluxe Pedicure, a soothing ritual for the feet. I’m invited to choose a complimentary ikatan nail polish for my nail colour (which I also get to take home). The Garden Room is absolute bliss and ideal for a Hen’s weekend or small group. He’s a patient bloke, but hubby is nonetheless hangry – he’s waited for me for two hours, after all. So we head to Woodfire Grill for lunch. Woodfire Grill is the sister restaurant to renowned Noosa restaurant Rickys. Set beside the Noosa River, it’s stylishly rustic and comfortable and features a wall of timber logs, a wood fire and banks of windows and doors that open out onto a shaded park. There’s a family group celebrating a birthday and young kids run back and forth from the table to the park, within their parent’s view. Hubby orders what I call ‘the man steak’ – a 600g Wagyu Cross Rump. The steak, served with potato gratin, chiodini mushrooms, quindilla peppers and cheese crisp “is one of the best I’ve ever tasted and cooked to perfection” he says, beaming from ear to ear. I settled for two entrees – the confit pork belly, caramel apple sauce, jus, ginger raisin and crackling and the Creole soft shell crab, chipotle, green papaya, coriander and lime. Could this day get any better? It does! We spend the afternoon walking off lunch along the beach and exploring the boutiques in Hastings Street. Happy Hour finds us back at View for a pre-dinner cocktail.

As if we need more food, but what the heck, we’re on a short break! We head to Season Restaurant, situated beachside on Hastings Street. We are shown to what I deem to be the best table in the restaurant. Mind you, being this close to the beach, every table is good. A cluster of candles set the mood on each table and I can imagine many anniversaries being celebrated here. Naturally, seafood features a lot on the menu and I tuck into oysters and scallops, and grilled barramundi, creamy mash, confit smoked garlic, Noosa tomatoes, pine nuts and basil oil. Hubby has the crispy beer battered fish and chips. The food is absolutely beautiful, however I’m struck by the slick service and easy ambience. The wait staff have just got it – the restaurant hums with good natured banter and bursts of raucous laughter. We leave the restaurant with a smile on our faces. We’ve truly overindulged, so we walk up the hill to Peppers and have a relaxing night in.

SEASON RESTAURANT
Sunday 7am Noosa National Park never disappoints and although we’re short on time, after breakfast at View we manage an early morning walk along the coastal track. Simply stunning!
Sunday 10am Our last stop before we head home is Land & Sea Brewery, Noosa’s First and Original Craft Brewery in Noosaville. Their restaurant is open seven days a week, and they make all their food from scratch. But of course, if it’s beer you’re here for, you can drink in or take away. Grab a Growler – a 950ml or 1.89L reusable brown glass vessel to carry your favourite bevvie home. It’s reusable so you can take it back to refill it, over and over again. Or there’s the Canimal – a 1L can which they fill from the tap, with a beer of your choice. They then seam it right before your very eyes. It’s a cool, laid-back place, with dogs, kids, hipsters and surfers – a place for everyone to meet. Noosa is always a good idea, but particularly when relaxation, great food and a little indulgence is high on your agenda.
