n light of our love issue, the most important relationship we have is with ourselves. From confidence to appearance, the way we think about our own image has the ability to affect all realms of our lives. For this issue, we delved deeper than what’s on the surface in more ways than one. Our electric cover with Creating Beautiful Bodies BLVD (and one of our faves, the gorgeous Jess Kent!) showed us that natural beauty is where it’s at and to love the skin you’re in. This time of year is also when many soon to be brides start looking at wedding plans and what a city for a celebration! Consider your planning done with a flick through our Wedded Bliss feature on page 26. Speaking of love, if you’re in need of V-Day inspiration we have you covered on page 32. Sharing the love even further this month for the recent bushfires is Brisbane born Conrad Sewell on page 22, and for some serious insight into what these firies face, meet some of our local heroes on page 12. We applaud each and every one of them!

MORE THAN FACE VALUE

In the heart of Brisbane, tucked between Emporium and James Street is Creating Beautiful Bodies BLVD. Welcome to a unique collection of the best skin and body treatments from around the world.

T

he brains behind the brand (and beautiful bodies) is Griff Davies and Vanessa Griese – who are passionate about great health and have travelled the world seeking a range of skin, body and weight loss treatments that really work and weren’t available in Brisbane. Not to be confused with a day spa or a wellness clinic, CBB BLVD is one of a kind. “We wanted to bring together a luxurious experience with highly skilled skin professionals and unique cutting-edge treatments,” says Griff. Using state of the art technology and facial assessment techniques, the team at CBB BLVD take the time to really listen to their clients. After all – you only have one skin and it’s the most impressive covering you’ll ever encounter. It’s washable, stretchable, self-repairing and lasts a lifetime. With everyone’s skin being so different, they formulate exclusive treatment plans that fit all particular paces and prices. During a visit to CBB BLVD, through the double doors and into the luxurious waiting room with hints of electric blue, marble touches, and lovely staff you will be whisked away to the 3D body analysis and facial skin analyser to your desired treatments and finish in the LED relaxing room. The CBB BLVD approach is health and beauty as a whole, taking care of the skin you’re in. “We offer scientifically proven weight loss methods involving training and nutrition with our in-house gym next door – the first medi spa of its kind in Brisbane. We also have a full range of cosmetic injectables and IV drips,” says Griff. “These treatments are designed to lighten, tighten and brighten our clients to be the best version of themselves and look natural, without looking ‘done’,” he says. From the Metis skin analyser that can detect future skin growth trends to the exclusive Guinot non-surgical instant face lift treatments (found nowhere else in Brisbane), radiance peels for glowing skin and

comprehensive anti-aging treatments to BYONIK laser skin rejuvenation, Technispa anti-cellulite slimming treatments and more, the pièce de résistance of CBB BLVD is the Cryo T-Shock. “It’s a revolutionary device and is the most innovative and versatile anti-aging method on the market aimed at eliminating localised fat, reducing cellulite as well as toning and tightening the skin,” says Griff. “Our experienced aestheticians and nurses are trained to help you look and feel more youthful and uncover your skin’s natural glow without surgery and with minimal downtime,” he says. Great skin shouldn’t be a shortterm solution and CBB BLVD will work with you by tailoring unique packages to suit whatever stage of life you’re in. Whether it’s to fit around busy schedules or certain budgets, with the great skin team behind you, you can continue to let your natural beauty shine through.

THICK OF IT Meet some of our local heroes. WORDS BY GEORGIE MURRAY

W

e don’t need to tell you of the devastation from the latest bushfire season, as the affects and conditions continue. Across the country, we have herds of heroes putting their lives on the line like never before, both as volunteers and fulltime fire servicemen and women. So with that, it’s time we meet some of our local heroes. Meet Bonnie Deaves. Bonnie has been a rural firefighter volunteer based at Hazeldean near Somerset Dam for over two years, following the path of both her uncle and father. Seeing the struggles they faced with finding active volunteer members, Bonnie put her hand up. This fire season, the Hazeldean Rural Fire Brigade faced a number of heated situations, in particular the Monsildale and Jimna bushfires further north which have been the largest in the area. “They burnt for several weeks, destroying tens of thousands of acres,” Bonnie says. It was these fires that Bonnie 12

|

also says has been the most difficult situation she has faced as a firefighter. “During the Jimna fires our crew was situated down the Louisvale end with a group of landowners and their families. Being a small community, we all knew each other. We had been working together all day fighting this fire and trying to hold it, then, in a blink of an eye, the wind changed direction and the fire came racing up the hill at us. I had never seen flames spiral like tornados like this – it was like the devil racing at us.” Bonnie says. Joining Bonnie on the ground was fellow volunteer and First Officer of Hazeldean Rural Fire Brigade, Rodney Kunde. With almost 43 years in the service, he signed up as soon as he was old enough, paying $1 to become a member. His role as First Officer has been his toughest job to date, “Having to deal with landowners who don’t like the rules that have to be followed,” explains Rodney. Agreeing with Bonnie, Rodney says this season has been a busy one for STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

the Hazeldean crew, noting the Jimna and Monsildale fires as the most significant. Rodney says the service is a great career path. His advice? “Listen to the fire fighters who have had many years on the fire ground. One thing I tell our new members is you don’t have to be on the front line to learn, stand back when you can and watch the fire as you will learn a lot by doing that because every fire is different.” Closer to home, meet Tom Hulbert, a new recruit volunteer based at Brookfield Rural Fire Brigade, balancing this with fulltime study and job as an electrical designer. This season, Tom has been nothing short of busy including two NSW deployments. Amongst these, he has been on the frontline at Gatton, Somerset, Kilcoy, Moreton Island, Jimna and Narangba, just to name a few. “All the incidents have been quite different to each other; the only constant has been the difficult terrain and extremely limited water,” Tom says. “Seeing lots of different scenarios definitely helps. Whenever

you’re presented with a new challenge, you can apply knowledge you’ve learnt from previous incidents. We’re constantly learning and teaching,” he continues, also noting the challenges of radio range connectivity and overnight blazes. From the country to the city, meet Tim Collingwood, a Senior Firefighter based at Roma Street Fire Station. While Tim’s a fulltime firefighter and has been for over 11 years, he also plays an integral role as a rural volunteer based at Clear Mountain (almost 20 years) and Air Observer with the State Air Operations Unit based out of either Toowoomba or Bundaberg during the bushfire season for eight years. “As an Air Observer (AOB) I am generally teamed up with an Air Attack Supervisor (AAS) and a pilot in a helicopter or small plane. While the AAS is conducting their primary role of coordinating the water bombing aircraft, as an AOB I produce an electronic map that will show things like the current fire location and direction of travel, the burnt area and threatened assets,” Tim says. More recently, Tim has been on the ground facing situations closer to home as we’ve seen one of the worst fire seasons to face the country. “This has been the longest and busiest fire season I have been involved in. I have been to nearly all the major fires we have had in the last five months starting at the fires in Stanthorpe back in September. The most challenging period was in November when we had the declared State of Emergency,” he says. When it comes to balancing his rural and permanent roles as a firefighter, Tim says we’re lucky that the dynamics between the two forces compliment each other which we have certainly seen across Australia in recent months.

ith fashion and design flowing in our blood, all we wanted to do was start our own label. Our mum is an interior designer and an extremely creative person, while our dad taught himself to pattern make and tailor make suits. Together, they had a men’s fashion label where they manufactured, did wholesale and ran five retail stores. Inspired by them and each other, we opened our first fashion store in Brisbane City in 2007. We love how Brisbane style means making your everyday wardrobe feel like a holiday because of our beautiful weather. When we started, the thought of e-commerce didn’t enter our minds, but the growth of it over the last few years 14

has been such a huge opportunity for us. The online part of our business quickly overtook our boutiques, which is what influenced our decision to change to solely online in 2013. Verge Girl is now 100% online with over 650k followers across the world. Our brand is effortless, chic and stylish, and we just purchased our second warehouse in Newstead. The best part about working as sisters is that we both have different strengths and take charge in different parts of our business. Expanding in the US is a big part of 2020 for us; everything is really exciting when we are seeing growth in so many ways. atasha Dodeja is no stranger when it comes to the fashion game, but her brand certainly is hitting its all-time stride. Fashion Paradisso is the go-to fashion destination when it comes to stylish pieces made with love – with each purchase making an impact on the community. Proceeds from Fashion Paradisso pieces are donated to Friends of Mithra benefiting mentally and physically challenged children. Buying a beautiful dress can make a world of difference, allowing students to have schooling where it's not afforded by families, within home and schools they can feel accepted and loved in a safe and secure environment. That's just one of the reasons why many are making Fashion Paradisso the one stop destination for gifts and beyond, automatically donating three dollars from every purchase with no extra charge to the buyer.

Being able to deliver and boast an eclectic curation of versatile and designer clothing items, trends and cuts with ethereal artistic ideologies, fashion is an art and it’s quite easy to see a symbiosis with the decorative and fine arts at Fashion Paradisso. Being asked, “What was your relationship with fashion?” growing up and immediately being able to answer, “It was a dream from early childhood and being devoted to make a sustainable women's fashion brand got me to where I am today,” says Natasha. Fashion Paradisso was established to make timeless pieces that are not about being popular for one season, but can be styled for many occasions and considered a good investment. An Italian

feast

WORDS BY FIONA WILLIAMS

From the restaurateurs behind Rico Bar & Dining and George’s Paragon comes Massimo – big on flavour and even bigger on servizio!

I

t’s a Monday afternoon and I’m sitting riverside at the old Groove Train space on Eagle Street Pier with the perfect perch to people watch. With a penchant for Italian cooking and fresh seafood, I know I’m in the right hands thanks to Michael Tassis’ latest venture. It’s hard to think this area was once such a moody setting with its now light and luminescent feel of the big beautiful blue Mediterranean surrounding me. Starting with thinly sliced zucchini fritters with pecorino cheese, these are complemented with a selection of fresh carpaccio – Kingfish, octopus and scallops drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with fine pieces of capsicum and lime. Of course, it wouldn’t be a European affair without an Apéritif in hand – Aperol spritz of course. Next, a plate of vegetarian gnocchi swimming

in a fragrant tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes and basil appears with stracciatella cheese that literally melts in the mouth with every bite. The softness! The texture! Mamma Mia! This is homemade cooking with exquisite detail. There are distinct traditional flavours throughout the menu and especially within the eggplant parmigiana plate that’s rich and delightful. What I love about Massimo’s offering is their fixed price lunch menu, making it possible to enjoy more delicious details a little cheaper for those professional patrons lunching while the sun shines. crab and prawn pasta (wound in a perfect nest with notes of chilli) and veal cotoletta with parmesan crumb and roasted potatoes that rival that of my grandma’s grandma. Finally, a whole juicy snapper is presented with fresh salsa verde and heirloom tomatoes. Words can’t describe how full my belly is feeling, but it would be rude not to order a cocktail to finish, amirite? An exquisitely balanced espresso martini ends in what can only be described as molto buono! The Life of Conrad:

THE STORY SO FAR It’s a big world out there and Brisbane boy, Conrad Sewell, is taking it on. WRITES DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA Embarking on an Australian regional tour, all the profits from his merchandise will be donated to Red Cross Australia and the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital in light of the bushfires. From growing up in a musical family, headlining Coachella and moving to L.A., Conrad’s life has been jampacked – so much so he put it into a song. We sat down with the perfect pitch to breakdown the lyrics of his latest single, ‘Big World’, from his debut album, Life. “I broke my collar headfirst.” When I was born, I was quite chubby, so I broke my collarbone when I arrived into the world. “Dolphin noises, I was different.” Mum would be in the kitchen and I’d duck behind the kitchen bench and start making dolphin noises. I’d pop up and say, “Mum, did you just hear that? I swear I just heard a dolphin.” She would look at me like I was completely nuts. “Middle child syndrome, I ain’t kidding.” My sister is super RnB – she’s very sassy and cool. My brother is jazz. He’s always wearing a three-piece suit and is very suave. I’m rock and roll. “Will Smith was getting jiggy.” I loved Will Smith in The Pursuit of 22

|

QUICK JAM

Happyness; I think that’s an incredible movie. But Fresh Prince is the classic Will. “And all the teachers didn’t like my long hair.” My hair tip is to make sure you have plenty of conditioner. A good leave in conditioner is great for men with long hair. “I guess the stage is where I do belong.” My favourite on-stage memory is Coachella. It was my 30th birthday, all my boys from Australia had flown out, and Kygo and I were headlining. We’d had Ariana Grande, Jamie Foxx and Ryan Tedder come out on stage, and I just remember standing on this big crane in the air, looking out and thinking, ‘What is life right now?’ STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

It’s a perfect Brisbane day – where are you? Kicking a ball down at New Farm Park, getting some Blue Smoke wings and hitting the Normanby for old time’s sake. Favourite song to perform? ‘Healing Hands’ – when everyone sings it, it feels like a big warm hug from the crowd. Dream collaboration? Kanye West Backstage must have? Manuka honey, red wine for guests and plenty of beer. Brisbane or L.A.? I love Brisbane and it will always be my home but L.A.

How did he propose? 2018 in Greece. He planned a mountain hike; we woke at sunrise, packed some fruit and left with our close family and friends. He ran ahead gasping and I wondered why he was so determined to be so far ahead. At the peak was a little white and blue church named Profit Elias. As I walked in taking in the view of the surrounding islands, I turned around to see him on his knee!! I burst into happy tears! It was a beautiful surprise at the end of a twohour hike! Ceremony and reception venue? 12 Apostles Church & Arginonda. Foti’s father’s cousins wedding venue, of course! Describe the location and why you chose it... Kalymnos is the island Foti’s family are from and where all the families meet every year for their annual holidays. I myself was always smitten with the idea of a Mamma Mia wedding so of course we chose Greece! Favourite moment? Our Boat Day! Welcoming all of our family to Greece at our gorgeous villa and then throwing them all into a day and night long boat and house party visiting secluded bays and returning to the villa for sunset. Where did you honeymoon? The Carian Hotel Kalymnos – we had always said we’d love to go on a retreat for our honeymoon, and it turns out we ended up running one! We had been traveling all 2019 with our Good Vibe Getaway Retreats in Europe and Asia.

Ace the Aisle What you need to know in order to ensure your legs are looking their best on your wedding day with The Leg Vein Doctor. When it comes to booking your big day, there’s no doubt that time is of the essence. And when it comes to looking after your leg veins, patients need to consider that the treatment all up may take five months following initial consultation. Ideally, you need to leave at least a month for bruising to have settled before your wedding day. So, call The Leg Vein Doctor as soon as you get engaged! It’s not just the bride that might need treatment either. Venous disease can be hereditary, so if your mother’s legs are giving her problems, now might be a good time to suggest to her to get something done so that she can buy the MOTB dress of her dreams. Increasingly, men are also seen visiting the clinic in the lead up to their wedding. Beach weddings and honeymoons may mean he will be in

shorts for most of the photos so he might want to fix his veins before his legs go on public display. In the final countdown to your wedding, if you haven’t been able to start your treatment one week before, then consider a spray tan. The Leg Vein Doctor recommends Brisbane brand ‘La Beach’ for providing a natural looking glow that conceals both spider and varicose veins well. On the day, mix up your footwear and try to do some walking or dancing. For your honeymoon, if you are heading off long haul, don’t forget your compression travel socks. Wearing them on the plane and in transit can control swelling as well as reducing the risk of DVTs. THE LEG VEIN DOCTOR 465 MILTON RD, AUCHENFLOWER P 3720 9912 THELEGVEINDOCTOR.COM

YOUR INVITATION:

St Margaret’s Open Day

With 2020 set to be a milestone year for St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, now is the perfect time to visit the inspiring campus. This year, St Margaret’s will celebrate its 125th anniversary of educating young women – commencing the school year with a record number of students. And in July, it will open a new sports precinct, which includes a new pool, gym, tennis courts and classrooms. From humble beginnings in Nundah, where they first opened as Eton High School, the school has transformed the lives of thousands of young women who can now be found in all corners of the globe,

making a positive impact on their local and global communities. Principal Ros Curtis says the vision held by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent, who established the school in 1895, has never wavered. “The Sisters wanted to prepare young women for both further education and for life, believing a well-rounded education, with a focus on the arts, sport and community service, as well as academic excellence, were all equally important for the growth these

pursuits developed in students,” says Ms Curtis. “This remains the hallmark of a St Margaret’s education and, in 2020, we will have the opportunity to celebrate the wonderful achievements of many of our Old Girls, whose achievements in all fields of endeavour are a constant testament to a vision which has been realised through the decades. Open Day on Saturday 7 March will celebrate our past, present and future, and we invite guests to join us from 9.30am,” she says. Headache hero Are migraines, tension headaches, facial or neck problems making your life hell? Do you suffer from the type of headaches that are crippling and you just have to curl up in bed in a quiet, dark room for hours or days until it goes away? Or perhaps you get the throbbing tension headaches that tend to set in at the end of the day. Have you ever woken up in the morning to a headache that seems to rob you of zest and vitality? Most headache sufferers have seen many health care practitioners, had multiple tests and have tried numerous diets, exercises, pills or devices they have been recommended and nothing has changed. Spending more money with little chance of success is a big and understandable fear for many. Some headache solutions can help address the symptoms

and make you feel better temporarily but aren’t necessarily getting to the root cause of the issue. Addressing these pain problems requires a thorough history taking, complete physical examination of structure and function, good diagnosis and a team approach. The team at James Street Dentists are world experts in the area of headaches and neck pain and have a multidisciplinary approach with their care. They work closely with many other health practitioners, with a common goal of improving their patients’ quality of life and getting to the core of the problem. The Pyramid Facelift

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS What were your main concerns before the treatment? My skin was sensitive with breakouts, hormonal congestion, redness, dehydration and overall dullness.

Beauty enthusiast and Styler, Madeline Smith, stopped by The Brow and Skin Studio for a Pyramid Facelift treatment that proves all good things come in threes. The Brow and Skin Studio have a reputation for achieving glowing and ageless skin. Enter their latest treatment, the Pyramid Facelift. In three steps, you’ll be enjoying radiant skin that’s plump in all the right places in only one hour and 15 minutes! Starting the amazing treatment is with Light Therapy to accelerate results. Step one is Tripollar radio-frequency. Radio frequency is no stranger to the beauty game, but the third generation of the family is revolutionary. By encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, Tripollar Radio-Frequency removes fine lines and wrinkles.

Step two is Dynamic Muscle Activation. Like a mini gym for your muscles, DMA causes light contractions and pulsations to achieve a firming and uplifting effect. Safe and noninvasive, it increases muscle density, volume, definition and tone. Step three is Voluderm. This isn’t your average micro needling. With the help of radio-frequency, Voluderm achieves maximum penetration to the dermal layer, enforcing a natural wound healing process that naturally produces hyaluronic acid and collagen. THE BROW AND SKIN STUDIO 469 WATERWORKS RD, ASHGROVE P 3366 0002 BROWANDSKINSTUDIO.COM.AU

How did you feel during the treatment? You feel a warm sensation with a small pinch, it’s quite pain-free. The therapists at The Brow and Skin Studio make you feel at home and comfortable. What were your results 24 hours after the treatment? Honestly? Bloody amazing! Would highly recommend to anyone two days before an event. My skin was plump like an instant facelift, which was from the radiofrequency. I had reduced puffiness around the eye area, a more firm/sculptured jawline and lifted cheek bones.

What are the costs of plastic surgery and how does this differ between surgeons? Why? Plastic surgery can sometimes be reconstructive, meaning that Medicare and private health insurance can contribute if the procedure is eligible. If not, all aspects of the treatment needs to be paid by the patient, including hospital, surgeon and anaesthetist fees. Pricing differs between surgeons based on training and expertise.

Answered

Plastic Surgery: If you have ever considered plastic surgery, it is safe to assume you have a lot of questions. We sat down with Dr Matthew Peters at Valley Plastic Surgery to answer your most pressing questions.

Mentally, what should be considered before undergoing plastic surgery? Patients should develop a clear understanding of what their problem is and what impact they are hoping surgical treatment will have. They need to be realistic about the outcome and appreciate that physical changes may or may not improve their quality of life. Is it painful? Pain is subjective, however, some procedures can be more comfortable than others. Pain medications and other recovery techniques exist to make short-term concerns more tolerable. Will I scar badly from certain procedures? Scarring is a normal physiological response to trauma. Genetics play a role, but so does surgical technique, planning and recovery. Regularly looking for problems when they are small to execute early treatment helps. What do I need to consider post-surgery? Recovery, recovery, recovery. It’s very important to take the required time off and to follow the activity plans recommended by your surgeon. How do I make sure I’ve found the right surgeon for me? Talk to friends and family about what you are considering – quite often someone in your social circle has had the same operation. Speak to your GP as they often know who is around and what they are best at. Social media, plastic surgery forums, surgeon websites and patient galleries can often give you more information plus context for what you can expect. Meeting with the surgeon and their team is key – make sure they understand what you are trying to achieve and that they have a plan considering this from all angles. Be my Valentine

To get your skin in shape for the big day, see your dermatologist early to address concerns such as acne, redness, pigmentation, dull skin and wrinkles. Allow several months to address the big issues and discuss these with your dermatologist well before your wedding. Remember, acne may take months to get clear. Topical or tablet treatments may be required but a good skin care regime and diet is also important. Irregular pigmentation on your hands, face and décolletage may also require several treatments such as BBL or IPL to achieve best results. Dull and tired looking skin can get a glowing boost from treatments like Dr Webber’s favourite - the HALO fractional laser. Vascular lasers and IPL can also wipe away facial redness. If you are trying anti-wrinkle injections for the first time, test these early to achieve the perfect result and top up if needed. When wedding day nerves hit, don’t let excessive sweating spoil the day. Effective treatments are available so you can feel confident in your skin and enjoy the special day.

Once upon a time, the groom had very little to no idea about what he wanted to wear on his big day. Of course, there are still grooms like this and while that’s okay, the majority of the guys now know what colour, style and fit they want. Our role is now more about guiding rather than instructing on the groom’s attire. We work with the couple to guide the groom toward a complimentary outfit while ensuring he differentiates himself. Differentiating yourself the correct way is about balance and is the key to looking stylish together. It can be done through colour, fabric texture or style and by understanding the theme and colour palette of your wedding, which includes the bridesmaids, flowers and venue. If you’re just having a groom and best man, the suits should be very similar, if not the same with only minor details, like accessories, being the difference. Trust your tailor or clothier – they should ask to view a photo of your fiancé’s dress to make sure you look perfect together.

Relationships need deliberate effort to stay vital. If you expect the joy and satisfaction experienced early in a relationship to continue without any work, good luck with that. The great news is that with energy, love and affection can be enhanced. Tips to stay in love, or fall back in love are: hug and kiss when leaving the home and arriving back, eat together nightly and check-in as to what each of you is doing. Overlook minor negative stuff that peeves you about your partner, explore fun new places, hobbies, adventures together, discuss your hopes, dreams, expectations, remember your partner’s best qualities by considering what their friends would say about them. Have sex regularly as it increases attraction and attractiveness, write reminders about what you value about them and regularly express gratitude for the things they do for you and the relationship. We shape our emotions, and romantic feelings and love are no different. Go on, take the challenge, it’s certainly worth it!

Alternatives to amalgam

Love your legs

We’ve all heard about beauty sleep, but did you know a doze has a lot to do with the health of our relationships? While we all know sleep is important, we’re still not catching the zzz’s we need to make us the best versions of ourselves, especially in our relationships. Sleep helps the brain process emotions and memories from the day. Waking up well-rested means you have enough mental space to both create and log new memories and work through your daily experiences. When you don’t sleep, your brain’s ability to do things gets whittled down to the bare basics of human survival. So, conversations with your partner, social outings, and patience for your kids take a back seat. When we have a good night’s rest, we are more patient, less prone to risky behaviours, and have a greater ability to listen and concentrate – all components of a healthy relationship. PBR Coaching can help with a variety of issues to get your relationship back on track and better than ever before.

When there’s a need to fill a dental cavity, silver fillings are no longer the go-to for most dentists. Gone are the days of removing excessive tooth structure to accommodate a large amalgam filling; dentistry has certainly moved towards minimalistic and more aesthetically focused treatment since then. Patients often mention their concern for their old amalgam fillings and are also surprised to hear that these large silver fillings can expand over time, possibly contributing to the cracking of teeth. In some cases, the cracks are so extensive that the tooth simply cannot be restored with a filling but requires more extensive treatment, like a crown. Being proactive with your teeth can potentially save you from the annoying drama of an emergency broken tooth. Replacing amalgam fillings using the best practice techniques is a common procedure requested by our patients. If you have a question regarding your older dental work, please book at the time of your appointment.

This month can often see the temperature hit its peak in Brisbane, and for those who suffer from varicose veins it can almost be unbearable. The heat causes veins to dilate which in turn can lead to increased discomfort and swelling. Many patients report sensitivity of their skin on their legs throughout the summer with increasing itchiness and dry patches exasperated by sun cream and sand. Fortunately, some of the best activities for venous health are very easy to do in our city. Going for a walk along the river is a great way to relieve venous congestion and stay cool. You should aim to walk for 30 minutes every day preferably in comfortable flat shoes. Swimming and aqua aerobics are also fantastic ways to help reduce symptoms and temporarily reduce the appearance of veins. Don’t have your own pool? There are many public pools located around Brisbane. The “anti-gravity” movements in the water help take the pressure off your legs and have been reported to reduce restless legs at night.

ILLUMINATOR Know the nose

Event planning like a pro

One of the most commonly requested procedures at Valley Plastic Surgery is a rhinoplasty. In laymen’s terms: a nose job. Clients request this procedure because they don’t like the appearance of their nose usually due to a hump or bump on the bridge and a bulbous tip. A rhinoplasty can also be performed to assist with breathing. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes between two to three hours. In terms of recovery, it’s entirely dependent on the extent of surgery and quality of the patients’ skin. The patient will usually have a splint on the outside of the nose and a couple of internal splints for a week. Swelling and bruising is normal and should dissipate by six weeks post procedure. However, it can take up to a year for the final result to be reached. Our team at Valley Plastic Surgery is full of highly skilled surgeons who are focused on helping you achieve your aesthetic goals. Book an appointment to discuss how we can help you.

Event planning is not an easy task, but there are a few things you can do to ease the stress and chaos. My one overarching piece of advice would be to establish a clear and obvious goal. What are you planning the event for and what do you hope to achieve? Many of the events I have planned have been for charity, so my driving force is always the strong emotional desire to help wherever I can. I believe if you’re truly passionate about something, you’ll always find a way for it to succeed. Secondly, leave nothing to chance. As the age-old saying goes, failure to plan means you plan to fail. Think of every little detail, assign people to tasks and keep them accountable. Prioritise the most important tasks and work on nailing them first. Finally, talk about the event as much as possible. Promote it everywhere. After all, you can’t underestimate the power of positive PR. Finally, grab yourself a drink on the night! You deserve it.

There’s no doubt that bright skin and a flawless complexion is welcome in any woman’s beauty regime, so it won’t take much for us to try something that boasts just that. Deputy Editor Fiona Williams reviews Australian Skin Institute’s Vitamin B3 ultimate illuminator. It may be small in size, but holy hydration this potent serum brings a punch to my skin’s natural glow. Am I so used to products that aren’t penetrating deep enough? Because there’s a clarity here I haven’t noticed before, and I’m not complaining. The ASI Vitamin B3 Ultimate Illuminator is a key player within the full ASI regime. After cleansing, the potent cosmeceutical serum formulated with highly active Vitamin B3 delivers a targeted treatment to my fine lines, breakouts, scarring, redness and my uneven skin tone. H abso-para-lutely. I think it would be naive to believe that there’s nothing out there beyond human existence. I do however, believe that it all has to do with your mindset and that believing will make you more susceptible to experiencing paranormal activity. When I was fifteen years old I started playing around with ouija boards after watching scary movies,

my mother was furious with me when she found out. She told me endless stories about spirits and ghosts and that the paranormal world wasn’t some joke to play around with. I think from that moment my whole perspective changed. Over the years I have had so many paranormal experiences that there is simply no logical explanation for, it’s freaky. I’ve seen a ghost – a little girl standing in the middle of the road

– I was with a friend at the time and we both described the exact same figure. I’ve also visited a highly renowned psychic and my experience was insane, I hardly said as much as my name and she could talk to me about my life just from reading my energy. I find the whole concept of the paranormal world so incredibly interesting and I’ll admit, at times, a little scary.

A real

I

’m just going to come right out and say it. I had never stepped foot on a cruise before this particular weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I never ruled it out, just never took the plunge. So when my partner and I were fortunate enough to be invited for a three-day getaway on P&O Cruise’s Pacific Explorer, I think I had a preconceived idea that bingo and strictly timed organised day trips were the norm. How wrong I was. Picture this. Strolling onboard to be greeted with a piña colada (bags were kindly taken onboard and already making themselves comfortable in our ocean view room). Nightly reservations for a bit of floating fine dining at Luke Mangan’s newest restaurant, A Taste of Salt, and a seven-course degustation with matching wines. Brunch every morning with views of the Pacific Ocean literally on the other side of the window. And couple’s spa treatment at Elemis Spa so relaxing that we basically melted into the table. Sound like your cuppa tea? Yeah, ours too.

Contemplating hitting cruise control? Styler Jasmine Rolfe set sail onboard P&O Cruise’s Pacific Explorer that is set to make waves in Brisbane.

I think what really sparked joy in my mind too, was the fact that everything was in one place. No ordering Ubers to the restaurant. No struggling with a map trying to find somewhere for breakfast. No need to organise tickets for a show, because the comedy club and nightly performances in the atrium were just a few floors away. I didn’t even have to wash my hair after a swim (in the kiddie-free pool by the way), because there was a salon onboard – talk about boujee. And possibly the most special and quintessentially Aussie part of the cruise (that I was surprised by, to be honest), was the hospitality. No word of a lie, it was the best I’ve ever experienced. The second we walked out of our room the attendant would be there

smiling with a warm, “Good morning Ms Jasmine!” and “Good morning Mr Dean!”. They didn’t miss a greeting, not once! That kind of service is second-to-none in my opinion. Not to mention the icy bottle of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries we’d find in our room each evening, after moseying back from the pool, cocktail making classes and/or a few sips at one of the nine stylish bars and lounges. Talk about turning up the romance! It was the ultimate quick getaway to slow down and take a moment to reconnect with each other. And as of October 2020, the Pacific Explorer will make a new home in Brissy, so be sure to say g’day when she cruises into town. WANT TO SET SAIL IN 2020? A MOMENT WITH CHEF LUKE MANGAN How did you come up with the name of your restaurants, ‘Salt’? When the restaurant opened in 1999 it was originally called Alchemy. But I then decided it needed to be more approachable. In the ancient Greek days, they used to give salt as a sign

FEBRUARY 2020

of hospitality and friendship. Salt also enhances the flavour of just about anything. And so, ‘Salt’ was created as a welcoming dining experience. A no fluff restaurant to answer all of the formal dining options in Sydney at the time. Your must-try dish? It has to be my signature dish, Liquorice Parfait. A dense liquorice ice cream served with lime wedges and lime syrup.

CRUSH

miriam palmer Brightening boutiques, luxury hotels, offices and Insta-feeds across Brisbane and beyond with her artistic floristry, this local creative is bringing an otherworldly vibe to the mix with Wildplay Flora. @W I L DPL AYF L OR A

One sentence to introduce yourself? A travel-obsessed Brisbane native who recently returned from Sydney to pursue my artistic vision through Wildplay Flora.

MYANMAR

Describe your work in three words... Unconstrained, romantic and bold.

Favourite project you have ever worked on? In recent times it has to be the Mecca/ Kiehl’s installation in Queen Street Mall. I got to create a ‘bursting from the boot’ effect in a gorgeous vintage New York taxi using spring blooms, cascading foliages and citrus fruits.

What do you love about floristry?

Music to listen to whilst working?

I particularly adore seeing seasonal changes and flower availability throughout the year, collaborating with clients who have fun briefs and I even enjoy waking up before 4am in winter because I know I’m going to see something stunning at the flower markets!

If I have a whole day to work on a big event, I enjoy listening to something chill like Winston Surfshirt, Bob Marley or the Spanish guitar. If I need to work quickly and stay creatively amped, I love INXS and Queen.

Your all-time favourite flower?

Last year I went to Myanmar. Bagan is an ancient city there which is imprinted in my heart.

The banksia! There are literally dozens of sub-varieties but I’m particularly in love with the Baxteri, Teddy and Serrata variations.

Favourite breakfast/coffee spot in Brisbane?

Who is your style icon? Aussie journalist Jan Fran. She totally rocks colour and daring patterns! She also recently pledged to no longer buy new clothing and only wear pre-loved/vintage clothes for sustainability reasons.

One fashion brand to wear for the rest of your life? Gorman, always. The more colourful and bold the print, the better!

Last place you travelled to?

Industry Beans in Newstead. The space is so light and inviting, the food is innovative and it just happens to be where I hold flower pop-up shops a couple of times a month.

What’s in store for Wildplay Flora in 2020? Growth in many areas. This year I have many more beautiful wedding flowers to plan, installations to design for my fashion brand clients and many more inspirations from nature’s bounty to apply!

What celebrity would you love to arrange flowers for? The amazing Frida Kahlo.
