AFTER MONTHS OF quiet anticipation and preparation, I can officially announce that I have taken the lead on my passion. This is my very first edition as Editor, and the creation of this magazine has been such an exciting ride. Today, a new month begins and so does a fresh chapter for Style Magazines. To start, let me re-introduce myself. I’ve been a magazine enthusiast for years, flipping through pages since forever. I fell in love with fashion all too quickly and had a dream to dream. But enough theory – let me tell you about the transitional pages of our March edition. Autumn/Winter has landed and we’re welcoming this new season with stories from the common denominator, #GirlBosses (page 16). In our pages, you’ll find unique nuptials, discover how to create your habitat, spotlights on booming suburbs and getaway features that are sure to thrill you. The architecturally-designed Hotel Urban and luxurious QueensPlaza have us revelling in everything Autumn/Winter on our cover. This season is a celebration of personal style mixed with statement classics and bold, sophisticated experiments. It’s only the first act, but I can’t wait to see what’s in store for years to come. Above all, thank you to my team for believing in me – and to you, the readers of my first edition at the helm, for making it all real.

Happy reading, Christie

OFFICE EXTENSION Want a striking space for meetings without the hefty renovation bill? We’re looking to The Corner Office for a little bit of luxury. STYLE MAGAZINES HAS grown exponentially since its humble beginnings on a kitchen table 15 years ago. Our office suite in Wilston became two suites, we’re plugged into all possible power outlets and we’ve established several hot desks. Simply put, we’re packed to the rafters. As our company has grown to include Digital and Custom Publishing services, so too has the calibre of our clients grown. When it comes to meetings and workshops, we need an impressive space to entertain and excite potential business partners. We want the space in which we collaborate to be as modern, forward-thinking and stylish as we are.

overlooked, the result is an incredible creative space in which to share ideas and impress your guests. There is a range of options available for hire as well as membership for ongoing clients. If you need some extra space for small functions, meetings, workshops or if (like us) you just need a few extra desks, check out The Corner Office.

Cue: The Corner Office. The Style team recently attended a leadership workshop at The Corner Office, and found it to have the full range of creature comforts you need on an all-day seminar: the latest in audio/visual technology, wi-fi, a large workspace and great meals and snacks to break up the day. It’s a luxuriously-designed, well-lit meeting space with a fully equipped boardroom and licensed bar and lounge (our two favourite Bs). With no detail

Caitlyn Spanner speaks to an inspiring group of Girl Bosses making waves in their respective industries.

ROXY JACENKO, SWEATY BETTY PR, WITH DAUGHTER PIXIE 16

MARCH16

LOUISE ROCHE, DESIGN VILLA

ROXY JACENKO OF Sweaty Betty PR, Louise Roche of The Design Villa, and Helena and Kristal of the Holistic Project all live vastly different lives, but they have one very important thing in common: they are all Girl Bosses. What sets these four women apart from their peers is the way they remain authentic, true to themselves and have a strong desire to succeed. “I wanted to do things differently, better and bigger than what anyone else was doing,” says Roxy Jacenko of Sweaty Betty PR. At just 24 years of age, Roxy stumbled into the industry to start her own company; today it’s one of the most renowned PR brands in Australia. Louise Roche, on the other hand, worked as a graphic designer for 20 years before creating photography and styling business The Design Villa in 2006. She has always stayed true to her brand and ensured that everything she puts out into the world is her own work. Roxy and Louise never had mentors, preferring to find the best versions of themselves on their own, through trial, error and a lot of hard work. Helena and Kristal of event management business The Holistic Project have many mentors and sources of inspiration, but Helena notes that she embraces all women who encounter challenges or adversity and strive for a positive outcome. “This determination and courage is what empowers me and is one of the biggest qualities I look up to in many women I know and have met,” Helena says. An increased sense of purpose (brought on by motherhood) inspired Helena and Kristal to start their individual businesses; but it wasn’t long before these two creative minds came together for the manifestation of The Holistic Project. The business offers events that aim to inspire others to lead positive, healthy and fulfilling lifestyles. “The internal call for us to bring our passion for creating positive experiences and purposeful

events was much greater than what we anticipated,” they say. From a young age, women have been taught that being bossy is a negative characteristic; that being passive and sweet will make us more likable and feminine. The Girl Boss movement, started by Sophia Amaoruso of online store Nasty Gal, encourages women to own all the qualities we’ve previously been ashamed of, such as being bossy, ambitious, independent, outspoken or serious. “Women are still, to some extent, breaking free of the traditionally passive, agreeable nature we’re supposed to possess,” says Roxy. “It’s not about being nasty or rude; it’s just about being assertive and possessing the qualities required to be successful in the competitive world we live in.” This ideology resonates strongly with Helena and Kristal, whose Pursue Your Passion suite of events supports people in pursuing a career that they love. The longstanding societal norm dictates that women should be hitting certain milestones at particular points in our lives. Although Roxy and the Holistic Project ladies are successfully juggling motherhood and thriving businesses (better than most), they will always have unrealistic expectations thrust upon them: Roxy has been criticised in the media for her commitment to her job and accused of putting her family second. “Yes, I’m busy. Yes, I’m driven,” she says, “but that’s my personal choice. If you want to run a successful business, then of course you’re going to be busy and you most certainly need to be driven.” Just last month, Roxy faced media scrutiny when edited indecent pictures of Pixie, her four-yearold-daughter, were circulated online in a vicious attack. Speaking to Roxy, or simply looking at her Instagram account, it’s evident that family comes first and she’s determined not to let this ordeal bring her or her loved ones down. Being married without children, Louise from

KRISTAL (LEFT) AND HELENA, THE HOLISTIC PROJECT

ADVICE FROM REAL-LIFE GIRL BOSSES: ROXY:

#GIRLBOSS The Design Villa has experienced similar expectations, but says those around her know she is happy with where she is in life. Growing up Louise admittedly “lived and breathed art,” but regularly copped a lot of criticism for her career choice. “People would tell me, ‘Art doesn’t pay the bills, Louise.’ I had to overcome their negativity and pursue my passion.” It was this ambition that propelled Louise to the success she experiences today. However, starting your own business will always come with struggles. Louise has always been skilled in design and creativity but found juggling her passions along with running a business was a learning curve. “Every day I try and do something differently or better to make the schedule flow smoothly,” she says. Our Girl Bosses agree that being a mother, wife, friend, partner and businesswoman is a juggling act. “I don’t really overthink it,” says Roxy. “I just deal with what’s happening in the here and now. My family is my biggest priority so I always make sure I spend some time with the kids each day and on the weekends. It often means late nights on emails but you do what you have to do.”

18

Similarly, Helena and Kristal put family first. “Whilst we have accountabilities and timelines, everything is flexible around them and their needs,” they say. “It took us more than 12 months to create balance with family life, work and extracurricular activities.” Helena and Kristal are very mindful professionals who aim to be present as much as they can in order to keep everything balanced. Yoga, meditation, affirmations, dancing with the kids, eating well and deep breaths are just some of the things that help to keep them grounded when dealing with such full schedules. When it comes to juggling their personal and business lives successfully, all four women agree: you need a strong work ethic, a determination to focus on the positive, passion for your career and a supportive network. Kristal and Helena learnt quickly that “not all people will understand what you are trying to achieve or want to come on your journey with you.” The girls say, “As long as you stay true to your calling, keep your goals in sight, and keep your intentions high, then what you’ll attract will far outweigh any negativity.” SWEATYBETTYPR.COM THEDESIGNVILLA.COM.AU THEHOLISTICPROJECT.COM.AU

STYLISH SPACES A new retail concept in Nundah is set to change the face of the hair, beauty and wellness industries. STARTING A BUSINESS can be a daunting concept. Ever-increasing rent, staffing costs, and consumers looking for more intimate, personalised services are all factors which need to be considered when creating a new business. The Fifth Avenue Lifestyle Centre in Nundah Village is now making it easier for business owners to get their venture up and running. Hairdressers, beauty professionals and those in the health, wellness and fitness industries are able to lease a high-end, fully-equipped studio delivered on a turnkey basis from $295 a week – the same price many professionals are paying for a single chair or room in a salon! Each studio comes complete with all the necessary major equipment so you can move in

and begin trading immediately at a fraction of the cost typically required to lease and fit out your own retail premises. Fifth Avenue studios are individually metered for utilities, so tenants only pay for what is used. Rent is fully inclusive of outgoings and free wi-fi is provided. The studios also offer a fully-equipped communal kitchen facility with washing machines and dryers, and a deck is provided for use by all studio tenants. Inspired by a concept which is taking the world by storm, the Fifth Avenue studios offer

an opportunity for like-minded professionals to work under one roof while maintaining their independence and working the hours they choose. Dual occupation studios are also available to cater for two professionals who wish to work together. With such a successful formula in place, plans are confirmed to open Fifth Avenue studios in Hamilton and New Farm later this year. OUR CUSTOMERS LOVE LOOKING STYLISH ... THIS

Fresh from the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week, Lauren Holland chats to Hannah Doody about the eternal beauty of Joli Boutique. What is Joli Boutique? We specialise in European fashion for women who are over 40 years old and love looking stylish. I have owned Joli Boutique for more than eight years and we pride ourselves on providing the best customer service! What sets your boutique apart from the rest? I travel to Germany twice a year to source the best collections for my customers. We’re the only boutique in Queensland to stock Gerry Weber and Lebek, which are our top selling collections. We also specialise in pants and have an array of colours and styles to fit any figure from a size eight to a size 18.

CAN MEAN A PRETTY SLEEVE, A SKIRT ON OR BELOW THE KNEE AND A BEAUTIFULLY-CUT PANT.

What is the over-40s market looking for? Our customers love fashion but don’t want to look like “mutton dressed as lamb”. This can mean a pretty sleeve, a skirt on or below the knee and a beautifully-cut pant – while still looking fashionable, of course! Tell us something most people would not know about you? I have represented Queensland twice in the national Fashions on the Field final at the Melbourne Cup carnival and have won more than $150,000 in prizes over the years.

My mum makes all of my headpieces and also stocks her award-winning millinery exclusively in my boutique. What’s in store for you in 2016? I have just returned from Paris Fashion Week, which was amazing and so inspiring! I’m also focused on growing our online boutique, which launched late last year and is doing very well. Recently, I got offered an allexpenses-paid trip around Europe that I’d then make a few travel-style videos about.

VIDEO STARS

MRMOHOCK / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Whether it’s cooking, gaming, comedy or hilarious misfortune, making YouTube videos has become a serious profession for many ordinary Australians. Hannah Doody takes a look at some of the internet’s rising stars.

VLOGGING, YOUTUBING... CALL it what you will; for many people, posting videos online is becoming more than just a way to kill time. When video-sharing site YouTube was founded in 2005, video blogging (or “vlogging”) became the new way to voice your opinions on everything from beauty products to gaming and relationships. Within 18 months, YouTube had become one of the fastest growing websites, with 100 million videos viewed daily. These days, vlogging is essentially a less regulated form of advertising, and can make for a lucrative form of income. Twenty-year-old Brisbane local Brianne Worth has been vlogging regularly since 2012 and has amassed nearly 75,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel, Ruckuslike. After starting her vlog out of “pure boredom”, Brianne has done everything from dressing up as a man to calling her mum and telling her she was pregnant as a prank – all for her YouTube fans. 26

While Brianne has never had a particular goal to turn YouTube into a full-time career, she has picked up various worthwhile sponsorships since starting her channel. “Recently, I got offered an all-expenses-paid trip around Europe that I’d then make a few travel-style videos about,” Brianne says. “I know everything has to end at some point, but if it turns out I can make a living from YouTube one day then I’ll ride that wave for as long as possible.” The elusive Perth-based creator of HowToBasic has made a killing on YouTube from his absurd, messy and egg-filled “tutorials”. The channel “shows” its viewers how to twerk like Miley Cyrus or rap like Eminem, aided by revolting props such as chicken carcasses and urine. While some videos are not for the faint-hearted, HowToBasic’s winning formula eventually enabled him to quit his day job in pursuit of YouTube fame. The channel boasts more than four million

subscribers, and YouTube tracker Social Radar estimates that HowToBasic is raking in as much as $1 million each year. There are many theories as to why people gravitate to online celebrities such as YouTubers or vloggers. One thing is certain: all you need is an entrepreneurial mindset, a smartphone and an internet connection to start your journey. (And maybe a dash of luck to succeed.) Video may have killed the radio star, but YouTube has given everyday people a way to create huge personal brands while maintaining complete control over their own editorial content. With more vloggers joining the ranks on a daily basis, this is a phenomenon that’s here to stay. MARCH16

MEDIA MAESTROS Style chats to the co-founders of Surge Media about the successes, challenges and highlights that come with running an exceptional Brisbane creative agency. IT’S BEEN A crazy ride for Ben Trowse and Aegir Brands since founding Surge Media in 2009. The pair brings over two decades of combined experience to the venture, working together to coax a magical result from two unique visions. “I think my left-field thinking and Aegir’s grounded mentality has made us a force to be reckoned with and that is the key to the roots of a good partnership”, says Ben. “With Ben’s creative skills and my technical knack, I knew this company would go places,” adds Aegir. In just under two years, the team at Surge Media has grown from a humble team of three to a group of nine highly-skilled professionals who provide a creative agency experience like no other.

SURGE MEDIA’S TIP FOR CREATING VIDEO CONTENT: VIDEO IS LIKE “THE VIRTUAL HANDSHAKE OF THE INTERNET.” IT’S NICE TO E-MEET YOU BUT ONLY IF THE COMPANY’S MESSAGE IS INTERESTING ENOUGH!

Co-founders Aegir Brands and Ben Trowse.

With skillsets ranging from graphic design and web development to video production, motion graphics and animation, the team is helping entrepreneurial ideas and messages reach people locally, interstate and worldwide. When asked what makes the Surge team different to other creative houses, both gents agree that web and video work powerfully in favour of all businesses who execute it correctly. “It’s about listening to the needs of the client,” they say. “You have to use strategic planning,

think outside the box and work with the best in the industry to deliver a favourable outcome for those who engage us. It’s a winning method.”

Breaking up is never easy, especially when it comes to your clothes.

KNOW WHEN TO LET GO Does your annual wardrobe cull turn into a trip down memory lane? Ashleigh Houlcroft shows you how to master the art of decluttering. WE’VE ALL HAD this problem at some point in our lives. As we regard our over-stuffed wardrobes, a little voice whispers, “Don’t throw that out – you’ll wear it again one day!” And so the item of clothing returns to the wardrobe, never to be worn (or seen) again. When you’re culling your clothes, start with the simple questions. Firstly, does it fit? Not at some point in the distant future, not when you eventually lose that weight – does it fit you right now?

Can you remember the last time you wore it? If so, was it in the last 12 months? And do you own a skirt/shoes/anything at all to wear it with? The next questions are a bit more open-ended. Start by describing your personal style, or the style you aspire to. Then brainstorm how you want to feel when wearing these clothes, and the person you want to be. Revisit your wardrobe with these questions in mind; it’s time for the second culling round. Clothes

Passionate about transforming people’s health, Kayla embarked on her first World Bootcamp Tour last year, training nearly 20,000 women across five Australian capital cities

A TASTE OF HISTORY A heritage-listed site in Teneriffe has been given new life to reveal a trendy public house, The Dalgety. House.

Co-owners David Orange and Mic Uebergang

PICTURE THIS: IT’S the year 1920 in Brisbane. Railways have just been developed, and primary industry is set to boom. Over the next few years, wool will make up 50 per cent of Queensland’s total exports. By this time, Dalgety & Co. Ltd. has been in the woolstore precinct for nearly 15 years; it was the first pastoral company to move into Teneriffe and a name that would go down in history. Over the years, the site has seen many changes, transforming itself from Ice Bar to Liquid Bar. Now the site is being taken back to its historic roots as a tribute to those who first lived there. While the micro-brewery feel is popular in the Tenerrife area, The Dalgety Public House is taking things in a different direction, capturing a nonpretentious local gastro-pub vibe.

Co-owner Mic Uebergang says the venue hopes to cater to a vast range of people and is all about an atmosphere of inclusiveness. “It’s all about sharing – there’s huge concrete communal tables where people can get together and share food… there’s even share cocktails,” says Mic. The menu showcases simple, modern Australian pub fare, with grass-fed steak, lamb racks and pork belly among the offerings. The beers on offer are mainstream favourites such as Melbourne Bitter and Fosters. The Dalgety Public House will open its doors to the public on Tuesday, March 1. THE KEY REST WAS CREATED WHEN GEORGINA FOUND HERSELF FRUSTRATED WITH “OUT THE DOOR” ITEMS.

BIG UPS FOR LOCALS Georgina Goddard and Morgwn Wilkie of Work Shop Objects chat to Caitlyn Spanner about their awardwinning homewares business. AFTER A TWO-YEAR professional sabbatical spent sailing around the Whitsundays in their yacht, Georgina Goddard and partner Morgwn Wilkie returned to Brisbane bright-eyed, bushytailed and ready to fill a hole they noticed in the design and manufacturing industry. With backgrounds in architecture, building and woodwork, and a successful design and construction company under their belt, the pair was thrilled to open the doors of Work Shop Objects in Newstead in November of 2013. Since then, the business has thrived, with its Australian-made ethos appealing to a large and supportive audience. stylemagazines.com.au

“We have the backing of the design community – people who appreciate practicality in what we produce and those who want to see industries like ours expand.” Georgina and Morgwn look to source all their materials from Australian makers and collaborate with local interior designers, industrial designers and architects. The Bike Rest is an example of their local creations, with its leather-detailed sling developed with Melbourne-based Made Measure. Everyday consumer needs are a large driver for their products. Another popular piece, the Key Rest, was created when Georgina found herself frustrated with “out the door” items. In addition

to a key rack, the indoor wall-mounted product provides storage for mail and other loose objects. The marriage of practicality, beautiful design and conscious ethos stood out to the judges of the 2015 Optus Small Business Big Up Awards, with Georgina and Morgwn winning $15,000 to boost their business profile and tell their unique story. Georgina says the award will help generate interest in Work Shop Objects in the wider community. It will also allow for continual development and help to extend their new product lines, coming soon! A whole new wardrobe for under $55? I’m hooked on this new hobby!

MACKLEMORE! CAN WE GO THRIFT SHOPPING? If you told Lou Parker a month ago she’d be getting thrifty, she would’ve told you where to stick it.

I WAS WORRIED I’D HAVE TO START ATTENDING SHOPAHOLICS

I ALWAYS THOUGHT I was pretty laidback. But I had to draw a line when it came to searching through musty second-hand goods and 80s-throwback frocks. Op shopping was just not for me. Then, when I turned 25, it began to dawn on me that frivolously spending money on clothes and living from payday to payday might not be the most sensible way forward anymore. I needed to find a way to keep my wardrobe current without having to live off tinned baked beans and packet noodles. After all, what’s the point in buying beautiful and expensive clothes if you can’t afford to wear them anywhere? While scrolling through Instagram, I started noticing that various local fashion bloggers had filled their wardrobes with pre-loved clothes. The result was a far cry from the stylemagazines.com.au

drab look I envisioned it to be. I decided to put my preconceived notions aside and see if it was possible to create a killer wardrobe entirely from op shop finds. This was all in the name of journalism, obviously. Not at all because I was worried I’d have to start attending Shopaholics Anonymous meetings. I rounded up some dedicated wing-women from the Style office, enlisted stylist and op shop guru Chermene Castle, and ventured into the world of used goods, slightly excited and slightly terrified about what I might find. We hit six op shops, mainly in the Logan and Paddington areas, learning where to go for everyday grabs and what to look for at higherend stores. My fears were soon forgotten when I started sifting through my spare change, handing over gold

ANONYMOUS MEETINGS.

coins for pretty dresses. I’m talking designer brands priced anywhere from $5 a pop! Turns out Macklemore might have been right: “One man’s trash, that’s another man’s come-up.” We all managed to find some big brands and one-off pieces to complement our style and current wardrobe. I ended up buying a top, a dress, two skirts, two pairs of shoes, a cardigan and a genuine leather satchel for only $55!

Brisbane op shops, look out! I’m hooked on this new hobby. Sure, some of my new clothes might look like something your grandma wore, but everything old is new again at some point. When those fleeting fashion trends flit by, I’ll still look fabulous. The only difference is that my appearance won’t be sponsored by tinned foods and packet noodles; if I keep saving this much, I could be back to eating Ritz in no time! 33

20 YEARS OF HARMONIOUS HUMOUR

TRIPOD WILL BE PERFORMING TRIPOD: 101 HITS DURING THE BRISBANE COMEDY FESTIVAL AT THE BRISBANE POWERHOUSE FROM MARCH 8 TO 13.

As Tripod returns to the Brisbane Comedy Festival for their 20year anniversary show, Candice Jackson chats to them about the hilarious and chaotic tour to come. MUSICIAN, COMEDIAN AND one leg of Tripod, Scod (Scott Edgar) says Tripod: 101 Hits will be a totally unique show that will randomly mix their hits in a fun night of music and stories. How has your act changed over time? For ages we were this weird harmony cover band. Writing our own stuff came later, and pretty much hard on the heels of that we got tangled up in the comedy scene. If you’d told me that 20 years later we would be playing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra or writing songs for Assassin’s Creed, I would have said you were on drugs and “Could I have some, please?”

Would you call yourselves comedians or musicians? I like “cabaret artist” but in the sense of “interesting combinations of music and theatre” not in the sense of “Marina Prior in a sequinned dress”. We tried to coin the phrase “musedian” for a while but people just wanted to punch our smug musedian faces. What’s the humour in Brisbane like? You guys have such a thriving arts scene that you tend

Steven Gates, Scott Edgar and Simon Hall of Tripod

to get a pretty literate, comfortable, up-for-anything crowd. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the city that has the Go-Between Bridge. What can we expect from your 20-year anniversary show? We’re bringing one of those bingo spinner barrel things and we’re going to randomly choose an hour of songs to perform from our new songbook 101 Tripod Hits spanning our 20-year career.

FIFTY-ONE SHADES OF BRIGHT IT WAS GROWING up in the colourful state of Queensland that inspired artist Vicki Corser’s vibrant, crisp, modern impressionist style. Now the owner of Gallery Fifty One, Vicki uses simple lines, repetitive brush strokes, shapes and texture to form a complexity of layers that stimulates her viewers. This evocative style has resulted in Vicki’s artwork being featured in various Brisbane showings and even a few local London galleries. BIG FAT GREEK SEQUEL It’s been 14 years since My Big Fat Greek Wedding hit theatres; screenwriter and lead actress Nia Vardalos gives Style an insider’s look into the highly-anticipated sequel just in time for its March release. SET A DECADE after the hit 2002 film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 finds Toula still married to Ian (John Corbett) and dealing with the prospect of daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) graduating high school and choosing colleges. Nia Vardalos, who plays Toula, says the original cast immediately signed on for the sequel, and many of her relatives are in the movie again. “We wondered if the cast were getting older until we saw them partying on set and we were not worried!” Nia is often asked why it took so long to write the sequel and she explains she said no to producers for so long because of her desire to write from experience. “I’d written that John Corbett’s character Ian and Toula were parents at the end of the first movie, and it was wishful thinking; I was in a very private struggle to become a mom. “It would have been impossible for me to 38

write the emotions of motherhood not having experienced it. And when I became a mother so suddenly and instantly, I realised what everyone was talking about. And I understood all the panic, all the fear, all the emotions. “On my daughter’s first day of kindergarten, someone mentioned how quickly they’d grow up and go to college and I got the idea for the sequel.” During the writing process for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Nia realized it wasn’t just the motherhood aspect everyone could relate to, it was everything. “I don’t just write about a Greek family anymore. I know that now. I’m not that smart, but I discovered it after the first movie. That suffocating feeling that I have sometimes when my family knows everything about me and I can tell them something and they just nod sagely and say, “I know.” – well, that’s true of every family. There are no secrets,” she says.

DRIFT INTO STYLE Cool and flowing bohemian fabrics epitomise Adrift’s unique character. WHEN REBECCA PULLAR noticed a gap in the market for cool, chic clothing for a middle-aged audience, the idea of Adrift was born. This “non-judgemental” label began in Rebecca’s garage, where she spent her time packing and posting orders. She has since transformed Adrift from a mini project to a beloved label for women of all shapes and sizes. When her Chelmer shop opened in 2012, word of mouth saw Rebecca’s collection sell out in the first week. This success led her to open two more locations around Brisbane. Rebecca says the idea behind Adrift is to foster kindness to people and clothes. “We are not trying to be cutting-edge fashion ambassadors. We’re trying to be kind, ethical manufacturers that allow women to be themselves, feel beautiful and join the Adrift community together.” Rebecca is now focusing on the digital aspect 42

of the brand; customers can expect to see a new live chat room and a customer responsive tab added to the website this year. “Over the years what I have worked on is building an online store that provides the customer with an experience that they can have walking into a shop with friendly staff,” Rebecca said. Rebecca hopes that the Adrift website will soon become every customer’s one-stop shop, especially with the inclusion of the new Mahlii label – a young, fresh, laidback range inspired by Rebecca’s daughters.

Whether you’re a tech-spert or a gadget novice, Sarah McAlpine shows you what’s to come in wearables. WE ARE LIVING in a digital world, but I’m still a material girl. And while we may not have (real) hoverboards just yet, society is steadily moving towards a futuristic fashion fusion of tech and textiles. Designers and developers are working together to create wearable technology, with the industry set to grow 64 per cent within the next three years. Slowly but surely, the fashion world is catching on, with collaborations between big brands like Huawei and Swarovski, and Fitbit and Tory Burch coming out of the works. Huawei (China’s biggest smartphone manufacturer) presented their Huawei Watch for Lady at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, unveiling a luxe yet traditional design coupled with a seemingly impossible number of features. Synced to your Android mobile phone, the device displays call and message notifications, acts as a fitness tracker and contains a number of customised screens so you can adjust your watch face to suit your ensemble. Last year, Tory Burch designed a custom range of bracelets to cover the wristbands of the Fitbit Flex,

allowing consumers to camouflage the basic design with fashionable wristwear. Household name Kate Spade also teamed up with start-up Everpurse to create a line of clutches and handbags that charge your phone. The accessories are virtually indistinguishable from those without the feature, blending fashion and function seamlessly. The wearable we most want to get our hands on? The Leaf by Bellabeat is a pendant available in silver and rose gold that measures sleep, tracks activity, monitors reproductive health and contains built-in breathing exercises to help reduce stress. There’s even a smart alarm feature to remind users to take their pill on time or change their tampons. When it comes to gadgetinspired trends, we love that the products are technically (pun intended) two in one, giving you twice the reason to invest.

Synced to your Android mobile phone, the device displays call and message notifications, acts as a fitness tracker and contains a number of customised screens so you can adjust your watch face to suit your ensemble.

LAST YEAR, TORY BURCH DESIGNED A CUSTOM RANGE OF BRACELETS TO COVER THE WRISTBANDS OF THE FITBIT FLEX, ALLOWING CONSUMERS TO CAMOUFLAGE THE BASIC DESIGN WITH FASHIONABLE WRISTWEAR.

colour, using trends that interstate hair stylists are already embracing. “Dip dye is the new craze!” says Rebecca. “It mixes the best of balayage and ombre together to create a ‘stop and start’ colouring technique worn by celebrities such as, Jessica Alba and (my alltime favourite) Gwen Stefani.” Rebecca says that under-layering will remain popular in 2016 due to the style’s versatility and

ability to add dimension to one’s face shape. When asked what she loves about Queensland, Rebecca says, “The heat! I’m not one for the cold! Work-wise, I just love how the people of Brisbane embrace their age in fashion and hair. It really reminds me that age is just a number.” BUTTERWORTH & CO SHOP 4/267 GIVEN TCE, PADDINGTON P 3367 2262 BUTTERWORTHANDCO.COM.AU

EASTER ENTERTAINING

INTRINSIC VS EXTRINSIC AGING

START YOUR JOURNEY AT HOME

THE EASTER LONG weekend makes the most of everything Brisbane has to offer with gorgeous weather, the beautiful outdoors and, of course, plenty of time to come together with family. This time of year calls for statement alfresco furniture pieces, bold prints and all things “garden party chic”. Add a little summertime colour for good measure and you’re all set. Our Chippendale furniture range is the perfect option for outdoor entertaining with multiple configurations for any event space. Throw cushions, bowls of magnificent blooms, festoon lighting and hanging lanterns also fit the brief. Whatever the location, be sure to work with your chosen space and complement existing features. The crook of a tree, an outdoor arbour and poolside settings all provide strong foundations for fabulous theming concepts. When presenting food and drinks, think about varying the heights of dishes to give a fuller feasting look. Oversized timber boards laden with fresh ingredients, platters atop riser boxes and punch bowls all deliver bountiful beauty.

THE AGING PROCESS takes place in two ways. Intrinsic aging is the “good” type of aging that we really can’t do anything about. It happens slowly and is often referred to as chronological aging. Intrinsic aging accounts for roughly only 10 per cent of the whole aging process in our skin and the signs begin to appear more prominently at around the age of 60. Extrinsic aging is caused by the environment and our lifestyle choices such as smoking, drinking too much, spending too much time in the sun without proper sunscreen and not taking care of our skin. These extrinsic aging factors account for roughly 90 per cent of the entire aging process. The good news is that we can control extrinsic aging by taking better care of our bodies. Apply sunscreen when faced with UV rays, take up a healthier diet and quit drinking and smoking. While you are making these positive changes, it is a good idea to get yourself checked by a skin practitioner to alleviate any concerns.

IMAGINE THIS: A private chauffeur is waiting to transport you to the airport. Upon arrival, you pass time waiting for your flight in the comfort of the business class lounge. Fancy a glass of champagne? Or perhaps a tasting of the latest Neil Perry menu? Take to the skies in your luxury lie-flat bed; where your peaceful oasis awaits the moment you step on board. Arrive at your destination refreshed and ready to hit the ground running. Sounds too good to be true, right? Wrong! Global Jetsetting can make this dream a reality with their business class airfares at premium economy prices. Don’t forget you can fly from Brisbane with Emirates on the Airbus A380, with Etihad and Air Canada on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and with Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines on the Airbus A330. Before you head off on your next holiday or business trip, pay a visit to Global Jetsetting. Our friendly team of luxury travel experts is ready to make your travel dreams come true.

WORKING OUT WARRANTIES

BIGGER AND BETTER

LEADERSHIP AND LOVE

A COMMON MISCONCEPTION among trade services – especially painters – is that all warranty types are the same. The paint manufacturer, such as Dulux or Resene, issues a product warranty which guarantees that the paint will not fail due to manufacturer error. Some clients assume that this warranty period covers their property against all issues. In actual fact, it only covers the paint products applied. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission legislation requires a minimum 12-month warranty on painting projects, which is often drastically below the product warranty. Without an explicitly-stated workmanship warranty by the contractor, all work is deemed satisfactory at the end of the 12-month period, and liability of any required rectification works falls back to the client. When you start gathering quotes and discussing projects with contractors, make sure you have an open discussion about warranty to avoid running into problems later on.

APARTMENTS IN CAPITAL cities are traditionally located in the CBD or within a two-kilometre ring. JLL noted that, in Brisbane, 19,800 potential apartments are being constructed and marketed over the 2015-2018 period, with 71 per cent of these being located in the inner-city ring (West End, Newstead and Hamilton). Many of these are classed as investment grade stock; smaller, lower-quality fixtures and finishes, minimal natural light and tiny balconies. Due to this, purchasers are now in a position to demand higher quality, larger apartments in boutique developments in areas with predominantly detached housing. BIS Shrapnel and NAB Economics teams forecasted that Brisbane is set to outperform the nation’s residential detached housing market. Given these forecasts, consider focusing on areas located within a two- to 10-kilometre radius of the CBD, where detached housing is the predominant urban form and tougher planning regulations restrict the future supply levels of investment grade developments.

RICK WARREN ONCE said, “Great leaders genuinely care for and love the people they lead more than they love leading itself. Leadership without love degenerates into selfserving manipulation.” The leaders who bring out the best in people are those who care about each team member’s personal wellbeing; they know that relationships really matter. When you are a leader, you should nurture the relationships with your team as much as you would with your family. This isn’t about all that mushy stuff; this is about respect and concern. Love inspires loyalty and commitment. Love binds. Love can turn even the most dysfunctional individuals into a high-performance super-team. Most importantly, when you love your people, they’ll love working with you. When a team knows that they are just as important as the work (if not more), they will be motivated to do an exceptional job. So remember to listen, talk, and give your time generously. Lead with love.

HOW TO SAVE THOUSANDS

THE PERFECT PROPOSAL

AN EVENT TO REMEMBER

THIS ISN’T A trick or a gimmick. Saving money is as simple as comparing services. If there is competition in the market, there’s a chance your current provider can offer a better deal. Give other providers a call and ask what deals they can offer. Take these deals back to your current provider and see if they can match the offer. If they can’t match it, switch providers. Remember, the new provider may not allow you to switch if you have a previous debt. Tips when comparing services: • Using the same phone/internet provider for all family members can save money and can give access to each other’s data allowance. • Ensure you are getting like-for-like services. • Packaging your home, contents, vehicle and pet insurance with one provider can give you significant savings. • Some providers (e.g. utilities) offer discounts for direct debit and long-term contracts. • To save yourself time, there are a number of comparison sites that do all the hard work for you.

PROPOSING CAN BE a daunting experience: you want to make sure everything’s perfect leading up to that heart-stopping moment when you present her with a diamond ring. When it comes to sweeping your partner off her feet, the best and most memorable proposal will come when she’s least expecting it. Amazing proposals don’t just happen; you have to do some ground work, do a bit of planning and use your imagination. In the end, it boils down to these four steps: 1. Research how she would like to be proposed to. (Remember to be subtle so you don’t spoil the surprise!) 2. Plan the proposal. 3. Rehearse what you are going to say. 4. Choose the ring! Looking for more inspiration? For the definitive guide on creating the perfect proposal, pick up a copy of my book, Rock Her World. The handy tips and tricks inside will set you on the path to a happy ending and make you look like a hero in your partner’s eyes.

AT PDPR, WE specialise in creating unique, memorable events with serious “wow” factor. With these fundamentals and your budget, our experienced team creates an event like no other: A unique theme. We look to the world around us to create a concept that is on-trend. A specific colour palette is an economical option. An impressive media wall. This is a great way for your guests to take photos with your brand on show. Think outside the box and make it fun with lights and greenery. A fabulous centrepiece. Bring your theme together with one standout installation. A dynamic guest list. Whether it’s guests, VIPs or the media, don’t forget anyone! Food and beverages. It doesn’t have to cost the earth; a self-serve antipasti buffet can still look amazing as long as it fits your theme. Entertainment and gift bags. Options such as live music, travelling palm readers and fireworks add an element of the unexpected. A surprising brand activation will bring your event to life and keep everyone talking.

EASILY DISRUPTED?

UPCOMING TRENDS

ANSWER YOUR ANGER

HOW VULNERABLE ARE you to the fastmoving world of work? Do you see opportunities ahead of the pack, adjust your thinking accordingly and make your own destiny? Do you see the signs and still have no idea how to navigate your changing course? Or do you completely miss the cue that change is brewing? Common issues: • You haven’t taken a hard look at how you do your work. There are still inefficiencies in your system and you need to nut out how to do your job in a seamless manner. • You’ve become complacent and forgotten that others are always looking to climb the ladder. How to avoid these issues: • Be vigilant: stay aware and understand market trends and how you can implement them to your advantage. • Understand your value and remember to brand yourself accordingly. • Don’t just wait around for winds of change; look for opportunities to learn and grow.

THESE DAYS, TECHNOLOGY allows us to access and understand trends from all over the world and bring them to Australia earlier than traditionally possible. In the past month, we’ve seen New York, London and Milan Fashion Weeks displaying the upcoming Autumn/Winter trends. Some labels, including Burberry and Michael Kors, are already starting to make select pieces available online, selling them direct from their websites. With Brisbane’s warmer climate, we tend to delay thinking about A/W until June, when the cold finally hits. Autumn actually starts in March, giving you plenty of time to be ahead of the traditional fashion curve. If you can’t find a label that suits your personal style, try talking to a dressmaker or tailor about unique pieces that fit with the colour trends. I am looking forward to seeing varying degrees of olive and warmer tones of grey this year. A popular upcoming colour trend for men is blue suits with purple hues. So don’t wait until 2017 to wear these looks; start now!

WHAT HAVE YOU lost in your life that you’re still angry about? Perhaps it’s the loss of respect, quality time, health, trust, physical, financial or emotional security or intimacy in a relationship. Acknowledging the loss of something we valued is the first step to healing our grief and strengthening self-respect. Anger is a reminder that we need to heal our heart’s pain. Ignoring the questions anger asks of us compromises our emotional fitness and restricts our ability to feel emotional security in any relationship. I use a simple acronym to help process anger in a healthy and constructive way: Answer Neglected Grief Eating Respect Remember, don’t neglect anger and risk compromising respect: addressing anger is part of every healthy, honest relationship that we have, including the one we have with ourselves.

IN THE DETAIL After 14 years as an industry leader and trendsetter, The Styled Group’s Brendan Cummings knows how to add the “wow” factor to Brisbane events. ADDING TO HIS already busy 2016, Brendan Cummings has recently opened The Styled Group’s new warehouse and meeting facility in Fairfield. The warehouse will give corporate clients the opportunity to see, touch and experience their styling range first-hand. Adjacent to the warehouse, a new studio space has also been created with styled tables, lounge settings, arbours and staging to give visitors a fullscale appreciation of the installations available. “The new warehouse space gives us immense scope to offer even more to our customers and corporate clients,” says Brendan. “With a complete studio space, meeting facilities and our entire inventory on display, the process of coordinating styling for any event or visual installation is efficient and stress-free.” 56

Shelves packed with a multitude of props, chairs, tables lighting, and linen en masse, the warehouse and studio space provides an unprecedented experience for wedding planners, conference organisers and event coordinators. I DO, I DO, I DO.

WILL YOU… When you’ve found the one, writes Lou Parker, there’s a service to help you put a ring on it. BEFORE YOU CAN even think about planning your wedding or saying “I do”, there’s one little thing you need to do: propose. Or accept the proposal – but we’ll leave that finer detail up to you. There’s a certain cloud of ambiguity surrounding proposals; someone gets down on one knee, there’s usually a ring and maybe some crying. (In a good way!) Everything else is a bit of a mystery; there’s no set formula as there is for a wedding. And if you want the proposal to be just as memorable as the wedding day, you might need to enlist help to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. In response to this growing need, proposal planners are surfacing across the country in droves to help people tackle the latest trend in the wedding world. Lavish surprise getaways, intimate

picnics with wine and cheese, hot air balloons, helicopters, cruises, enchanted forests, professional photographers, white doves and live entertainment – proposal planners have everything you need (and more!) for this unforgettable moment. However, these caring fairygodmother-like gurus are not hired because their client lacks imagination or romance. Claire Whelpton, owner of proposal company Buy The Cow, says it’s a misconception that men are lazy. “These are extremely romantic guys,” she says. Big or small, the most important part of any proposal is conveying how much you love your partner. The tricky part isn’t knowing how you feel about someone; it’s being able to distil all those emotions into a few words or actions. In Claire’s experience, clients look to proposal planners for help honing

their ideas. “Often clients have great ideas but the logistics of bringing it all together is tricky,” Claire says. But all the time spent planning and stressing is worth it when the big moment arrives and they finally see their darling’s face light up at the grand gesture. “The ladies often cry when they see how much effort has been put in,” Claire gushes.

Claire says there are a few rules that nervous bachelors should keep in mind before asking for their love’s hand in marriage. “No selfies; get a professional to capture the moment. Make sure the proposal reflects the relationship. Keep it on the low – the surprise factor is important.” “And remember to wear deodorant on the day,” she laughs.

Enjoy a day of sparkling, canapés, entertainment and exquisite styling, with take-home cake for every blushing bride!

I DO, I DO, I DO.

NEW NUPTIALS If traditional isn’t your style, Ashleigh Houlcroft knows just what you need to bring your wedding ceremony into the 21st Century. THE THEME It’s not just about picking a wedding location; these days, couples are going one step further to prioritise décor. Some couples opt to match the décor with everything from the food to the gown, while others prefer a more stripped-back, minimal look. Every element should be a reflection of the couple’s personal style. Let your life be the guide; from laidback festival vibes to that glam-luxe feel, there is endless inspiration on offer. THE TECH While some couples are opting for phone-free wedding, others are heading in the opposite direction. A special Instagram hashtag will gather your guests’ photos in one easy-to-find place. Drones are increasing in popularity, providing a way to catch your special day on film from a bird’s eye view, and a whole lot of other angles as well. Don’t be surprised if you find one buzzing above your head at the next ceremony. You could also consider using a GoPro: tack it onto the end of that selfie stick you hardly ever use and let it float around the dance floor to catch all your guests enjoying themselves on camera.

58

THE GROOM Trendy tuxes are evolving, giving the groom and his party an opportunity to be more colourful and daring with a personal touch. Think a pop of colour in the form of a pocket square, some kooky socks, bright cufflinks or a unique tie. With less focus on a perfect match and more on effortless coordination, men can have fashionable fun on the big day too.

THE TASTE These days, couples are ditching a formal dinner in favour of a more relaxed vibe. If you’re struggling to work around dietary requirements, there’s a solution! It’s becoming increasingly common to incorporate modern ideas such as food trucks or laidback buffet-style feasts to allow guests to make their own choices.

THE BRIDE You can’t beat the swoon-worthy traditional white gown. Or can you? These days, brides are trying jumpsuits, stylish separates and several outfit changes on their big day. Another shopping trip? Yes, please! Brides are also deviating away from the traditional wedding white, with bone, beige, cream and even gold catching on.

THE SEATING Instead of positioning the bridal table at the end of the hall, place a (circular) table in the middle and surround yourself with family and friends. Let people sit where they please – no more stressful seating charts! With new wedding trends popping up every day, all you have to do now is stick to the budget!

Three years ago, Renee opened her own window and soft furnishing business, Thimble and Co. Her aim was to provide a fresh new approach to manufacturing high-end quality products. Renee says this quality is the driving force behind her business, and it is easy to achieve when she loves every aspect of her work. “I love playing with beautiful fabrics, the feeling of walking away from a happy client, and I find the manufacturing side of things really therapeutic,” says Renee. 60

70 YEARS YOUNG The team at Jim McKeering Real Estate chats to Style about reaching a milestone in the industry. So your company is turning 70 this year? We like to describe the business in real estate terms: a solid post-war structure with great bones, charm and character that will see it stand the test of time. What do you think sets your business apart? The difference is the sum of our parts. John McKeering is the master builder; our special weapon. There’s nothing more valuable in real estate than having a builder on staff. Though reluctant to be caught on camera, he instils confidence in all – buyer, seller and landlord. Then there’s Siobhan Cowell, the connector. Her innate ability to listen and understand people’s needs helps Siobhan think outside the box and solve any problem that may arise. Her nursing background and consulting business have given her the perfect skills to make order from chaos. Jacqui McKeering

HOW TO DITCH THE DVT

THE EYEBROWS’ ENERGY

EMBARRASSING BODY ISSUES

THROMBOSIS OR BLOOD clotting can lead to serious complications such as heart attacks, strokes, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), or (the most serious) a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). So what is a blood clot? It’s a mass formed by platelets, which are held together by fibrin, a protein which acts like glue. 50 per cent of blood clots in deep veins go unnoticed until they cause complications. Diagnosis is determined by a Duplex Ultrasound Scan, and treatment requires anti-coagulation drugs, compression and mobilisation. How to reduce your risk of a blood clot: Travel. Avoid sitting for long periods without walking periodically. Surgery. Discuss the risks of DVT with your doctor and whether anticoagulant medication is appropriate to reduce the risk. Lifestyle. Stop smoking, lower high blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise. Research. Know your family history and talk to your GP if you think you may be at risk.

YOUR FACE CAN reveal a lot about your personal wellbeing and the direction of energy. Each facial feature is connected to a specific body part, with the eyebrows being the representation of arms. Your brows can say a lot about manipulating energy and impacting lifestyles positively. The quality of your brow hair is an indicator of how much energy exists and where the energy is focused. On the other hand, the direction in which the hair grows can reveal how the energy works. For a calm and balanced energy flow, the eyebrows need to have a strong shape with a small curve. When the end of the brow is nice and even, and finishes after the curve of your brow, there’s a healthy flow of energy to your heart. The brow must also sit just above the brow bone; otherwise the energy cannot flow. What do your brows look like? Book a consultation with one of our Arch Angels today to find out how you can benefit from healthier brows!

ANAL OR RECTAL skin tags are (usually) harmless growths that appear around the anus. Sometimes mistaken for warts or piles (haemorrhoids), these growths can be embarrassing and annoying. With one in two Australians suffering from haemorrhoids, this is a common but rarely-talked-about problem. The issue may arise due to a lesion, anal injury or the skin left behind after haemorrhoid treatment. Although not a health risk, anal skin tags can make it difficult to maintain cleanliness after using the toilet. They may also become irritated through rubbing of clothing or movement during exercise. Anal skin tags can be removed with a radiofrequency diathermy machine. This is a simple local anaesthetic procedure which takes approximately half an hour. Please note this is not a treatment for haemorrhoids and if rectal bleeding has occurred, a clinical assessment by a general practitioner is necessary to exclude a potentially more serious underlying condition.

TOUGH LOVE

WHY DO YOU TRAVEL?

LEARNING THE A TO Z OF PCOS

RELATIONSHIPS ARE TOUGH; they require give and take, as well as an investment of energy, and motivation to ensure fun, meaningful times. Seldom is a relationship equal in every way, but if one person finds themselves making the majority of the sacrifices then they can begin to wonder if the relationship is really worth it. You may have heard the term “enabling” used in relation to addiction, but it can refer to any unproductive behaviours that a person engages in that can increase the relationship inequality. Accommodating a friend’s harmful or disrespectful behaviour can result in that friend being shielded from logical consequences that normally result from self-serving behaviours. It’s not easy to put a stop to this cycle, but it is possible to put boundaries in place. When you’ve exhausted ideas or energy, or been hurt too much, you can withdraw support from someone’s poor relationship conduct until they choose more appropriate behaviours. It might sound harsh, but maintaining reasonable standards is part of practising tough love!

THE THOUGHT OF travelling brings with it the promise of happiness. Philosopher Alain de Botton suggests we should consider travel as being as much about the inner journey as the outer destination. Before planning that holiday, ask yourself the following questions: Why do you want to travel? Is it to learn something new about a place, culture or yourself; to meet interesting people; to try unusual foods; or to simply relax and unwind? Who do you want to travel with? Are you happiest following your own path, or do you revel in the whirlwind of group journeying? What do you hope to achieve? Do you want to return home wiser; more self-aware; more knowledgeable; or fitter and healthier? Which destination suits your goals? Are you curious about the world, or do you find happiness in the nature on your doorstep? How will you travel? Are you seeking thrilling adventures; sedate cultural endeavours; backpacking simplicity; or the aesthetic beauty of luxury?

POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS) is a glandular condition of the ovaries that affects approximately 10 per cent of women and up to 25 per cent of infertile women. Every woman with PCOS experiences a different set of symptoms, which may include irregular periods, lack of ovulation, acne, hirsutism (excessive facial and body hair), anxiety or depression and infertility. You don’t have to experience all of these symptoms to have PCOS; in the long-term, women may experience great difficulty maintaining a normal weight, develop diabetes or even develop uterine cancer. Treatments are available (both hormonal and non-hormonal) that can be tailored to a woman’s specific set of symptoms. For those with difficulty falling pregnant, there are simple and inexpensive fertility treatments that will help the majority of couples start a family. Less than 20 per cent of women with PCOS will need IVF. If you have any of the above symptoms, talk to your GP about a referral.

BODY

BODY AND SOL Ready to clean out her insides, Elle Raison does a Style Trial of the Sol Cleanse juice detox. FOOD IS LIFE... well, more accurately, food is my life. After a year gallivanting around the world, settling back into reality has been hard. And more importantly, it has been hard on my gut. In 2016, I decided it was time to put my health and wellbeing first. And what better way to kickstart my journey than with a Sol Juice Cleanse? Organic, cold-pressed and nutrient-dense, Sol’s juices aim to cleanse your body, eliminate toxins and leave you energised. Thanks to my “go hard or go home” mentality, I found myself signing up for a five-day cleanse – the longest detox on offer. For the next five days, my life would consist of six liquid meals

a day: one green smoothie, four different juices and one nut mylk. Easy, right? Days one to three saw my food envy soar to new heights. Lusting over colleague’s meals, I was hangry and boy did they know about it. I couldn’t concentrate and was exhausted by 8pm every night. I caved on the second day and bought some unsalted nuts and fruit to get me through work. On day four, the coffee cravings were starting to fade and I was feeling alive! By the time the cleanse was over, I felt lighter, brighter and craving-free. The biggest change I saw was in my skin. It was brighter, clearer and even had a bit of a glow to it! SOLCLEANSE.COM

PERFECT YOUR POUT! Brooklyn Beauty Bar is all about pampering! Brooke Jesberg tells us how their makeup artists will have you brushed up on beauty.

I COULD WRITE for days about manicures, pedicures, facials, lashes, tans, brows – you name it, we do it! But after giving some careful thought, I realised that the most pampering thing we do at Brooklyn Beauty Bar is makeup artistry. Our in-house makeup artists, Taylah and her team, are experts in their field and there is nothing these artisans love more than transforming our clients with their expert beauty skills. Having your makeup done can feel like an stylemagazines.com.au

indulgence, but when professional contouring skills make you look and feel like a movie star, it takes pampering to a whole new level. We use only the best products. For your perfect pout, we use BITE, an edgy and edible lipstick released by Louis Vuitton that contains no parabins or other nasties. As founder of BITE Beauty Susan Langmuir says, “You eat what you put on your lips, so your lipstick should be good for you”. The fact that it looks fabulous doesn’t hurt, either!

Next time you’re attending a special event or are in need of a little pampering, make an appointment at Brooklyn Beauty Bar for a professional makeup application. COMMITMENT, 30 YEARS’ industry experience and advanced technology is what drives the team at Irena Morgenstern Skin Management to achieve skin confidence for their clients. Company founder Irena Morgenstern says their industry-leading cosmetic and laser techniques aid the body’s ability to heal and rejuvenate itself, slow down the aging process and achieve results that cosmeceutical products cannot deliver alone. “The industry has changed substantially over the years,” says Irena. “Modern technology and science now allows us to look at the skin holistically and offer solutions that are natural and safe, and work with the cells to deliver a complexion that one can only dream of!” Since establishing the clinic over 20 years ago, Irena has had a strong vision and philosophy for her work, aiming to combine science and natural therapies to “reactivate” the skin to regenerate

BROW BRILLIANCE Beauty enthusiast and Style journalist Lou Parker discovers that growing out your eyebrows can lead to picture-perfect face-framing. GROWING OUT YOUR eyebrows usually takes around six months. After that, you’re left with Mother Nature in all her glory. When I started my Style Trial, I had a wide bristle of hairs at the beginning of each brow, which tapered off into many strays – hardly the bold arch I was hoping for. I’m also blonde, which made my brows look more washed out than striking. There are ways to make the growingout phase more pleasant. If nothing else, invest in a good eyebrow pencil and brush to help maintain shape. And don’t neglect your brows entirely; experts can get rid of any fluff or the odd hair that’s growing too far above or below the brow line. After months of growing out the girls, you want to know they’re in good hands.

So now is the time to seek professional help. I contacted Chernae Silk, owner of The Brow Bar; with her reputation as a brow whisperer, I had no doubt she could coax these babies back into shape. In less than an hour, Chernae had transformed my thick, drawn-on lines into a fuller brow. She even graced me with a new lift point, honouring the upward lines on my face for a younger look. To complement my ash-blonde hair and cool blue eyes, Chernae took me from a warm reddish-brown to a soft charcoal – a sweep of custom-blended colour instantly changed my entire face. LIKE MANY YOUNG creatives, 26-year-old Siâna Cork was looking for a way to profit from her passion. While cooking up beauty products in her kitchen, she stumbled on the recipe for success. The day Siâna chose to start her own business, she made two other big decisions: she wanted to branch out on her own, and she wanted the business to be completely environmentally friendly. “It took a really long time to get it the way I wanted it. I wanted it to be environmentally friendly and I really wanted to support Australian companies,” Siâna says. “I think that businesses have the opportunity to really say, ‘No, I’m not going to take the cheaper way out; we have to look after the planet.’” Today is Ours uses solar power where possible,

FERTILITY FACTORS

Could your weight be making it harder for you to fall pregnant? Take control of your fertility with Wesley LifeShape Clinic. BEING OVERWEIGHT OR obese not only reduces the chance of conceiving naturally, but also means fertility treatments, such as IVF, are less likely to be successful. Other pregnancy-related concerns that are directly linked to excess weight include: • increased risk of high blood pressure and pre‑eclampsia; • gestational diabetes; • higher rate of miscarriage (if your BMI is over 30, the risk is 25 per cent higher); and • greater need for caesarean sections. Achieving a healthier body weight before you start trying to conceive will increase your chances of becoming pregnant, and help reduce the possibility of any complications throughout your pregnancy.

imagine looking like yourself only better Shedding excess weight can even help you avoid the need for IVF and other fertility treatments altogether. A recent Australian study found that losing just a small amount of weight can improve the chances of overweight women conceiving by almost fivefold. Women who lost more than five per cent of their body weight were 4.75 times more likely to have a baby in the following four years. If you are having trouble falling pregnant, it might be time to make some positive lifestyle changes to assist with conception and improve your overall pregnancy health.

FOOD+DRINK The seafood platter is bursting with colour!

DEEP SEA, BABY An old favourite sporting a fresh new look and menu, Fresh n Wild is still dishing up the ocean’s freshest flavours to Brisbane foodies. Hannah Doody checks out Portside’s haven for seafood lovers. WITH A SPACIOUS interior, and rustic wooden tables sprawling out into an alfresco dining area, I can imagine making my way to Fresh n Wild for a long lunch before a movie or a casual dinner catch-up with friends. After 10 years in the seafood business, it’s obvious that the family-run team at Fresh n Wild knows a thing or two about fish and chips. We’re greeted by Sam Demetriou, who has recently rejoined father Michael (founder and owner) and brother-in-law Greg at Fresh n Wild after years of studying and working as a pharmacist. In February, Fresh n Wild swapped takeaway packaging for custom plates and silverware. The venue now boasts a modern gourmet menu with the fresh and tasty Australian seafood that customers have come to know and love, served up in unique ways. But don’t worry – there are still plenty of classic fish and chip options available to satisfy your cravings. The first dish to arrive at our table is a seafood platter. The vast stone plate is bursting with colour and smells as fresh as the ocean; the oysters are rich in flavour, as if they’ve been plucked straight stylemagazines.com.au

from the sea and freshly shucked. The Moreton Bay bugs and prawns are meaty and flavoursome, but the highlight of the platter has to be the octopus immersed in a delicious garlicky, smoky marinade. As a burgeoning sashimi connoisseur, I have high expectations for our next dish and I am not disappointed: the salmon sashimi is firm and full of flavour. Sam explains that the tuna poke is a traditional Hawaiian dish that made it onto the menu when a staff member returned from holiday and couldn’t stop raving about it. It is salty and delicious and we eat every last bit. The last dish, fish tacos and soft shell crab bao served with a tasty slaw, leaves us incredibly satisfied and wishing we could find room for just one more dish. The venue is working to secure a liquor licence this month in order to serve craft beers and quality wines alongside their fresh local fare, I’m already planning another visit to try the rest of the menu and I can’t wait to see what else the future brings! WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Convenience, that’s what. Fitness and nutrition gurus from FivePointFour, Youfoodz and Fitaz Functional Kinetics chat to Leith Wilson about the trend towards pre-packaged food and meal plans. PROMISING TO SAVE you time (and even a few kilograms), healthy meal plans and pre-packaged foods hit the sweet spot for anyone wanting a quick, easy and healthy food fix. Beni Doolan, nutrition consultant for prepackaged meal company FivePointFour, puts the increased interest down to a surge in the health and fitness industry. “People are becoming educated around their nutrition and many people are increasingly timepoor. The combination increases the likelihood of services such as home-delivered meals and plans,” Beni says.

But with so many options available to choose from, what should you be looking for? Aaron and Georgio, creators of the revolutionary 28-day fitness and meal plan guide Fitaz Functional Kinetics, say convenience is crucial. “Ask yourself whether it will fit into your daily routine and lifestyle, and whether it is achievable.” With meals designed by Head Chef Christian Andrew, Youfoodz offers fresh meals cooked with local ingredients that are great for any lifestyle. “Our menu is designed to suit people from all walks of life, from professional athletes to parents simply trying to save time in the kitchen.”

FITAZ’S FAST FIVE FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE • Prepare. Dedicate an hour to prepare your meals for the entire week. • Intensity over duration. Dedicate 30 minutes to complete your workout. • Visualise your goals. • Acknowledge your achievements and reward yourself as you reach your goals. • Test and retest; reset your goals as you achieve them.

So get ready to ditch that late-night chocolate when you stagger home from the office, and stick to FivePointFour, Youfoodz and Fitaz’s healthy meal plans instead! It’s fast food at its healthiest.

PEDESTRIAN PARADISE Thinking of visiting Tokyo in winter? Christie Sutherland writes that it’s just like the chaotic fairytale she imagined, for all the right reasons. I HAD NO idea how much I would truly fall in love with Tokyo. This city was at the top of my mustsee list for years and I wish I hadn’t waited so long. For first-time visitors to Japan, like me, I have to warn you that it is very addictive. I love how Japan still protects its traditional culture while maintaining its status as one of the most modern countries in the world. Tokyo is a powerhouse; a pulsating megacity that contradicts itself at every turn. Shibuya, Harajuku, Roppongi, Shinjuku are just a few districts that truly show this and ones I recommend immersing yourself in. The Japanese capital is full of neighbourhoods made for walking, a food scene that satisfies even the hardest-to-please gourmet traveller, more history than you can poke a samurai sword at and the guarantee of a strong dose of culture shock. A trip without any plans, commitments or 80

constraints, full of nothing but time and freedom sounds like an awesome adventure. But even with a flexible schedule, I couldn’t take full advantage of the unlimited possibilities without first figuring out where to start and where to go. Every single street you walk down is an adventure. From the sky-high designer fantasies lining the streets and one-of-a-kind hidden alleyway boutique stores to the bustling fish markets and five-Michelin-star restaurants, every aspect is mind blowing. There’s no bad time to visit Tokyo, with every season offering an intriguing atmosphere and a packed calendar of events that makes for a memorable vacation. I travelled to Japan for a skiing and snowboarding adventure in Niseko, but it was Tokyo that stole my heart, with its endless streets to explore and stories to tell. MARCH16

A DOLPHIN OF A TIME If you and your partner are seeking a romantic escape, writes Christie Sutherland, you need to add this unique destination to the top of your list. SPEND A WEEKEND chasing sunsets with your special someone; the unique attractions and countless activities at Tangalooma Island Resort serve romance and enjoyment on a platter. It’s hard to believe that this slice of paradise is right on our doorstep, only 75 minutes away from Brisbane and easy to reach aboard any of Tangalooma’s high-speed catamarans. Filled with amazing natural adventures, you might not think to pair this protected area with a romantic weekend getaway – but you would be wrong. The laughs and magical moments we experienced were all thanks to this uniqueness; Moreton Island really is as picture-perfect as it seems. With an abundance of tours and activities both on land and in the water, this island has everything you need to keep you busy and relaxed. Determined to experience all that the resort had to offer, we donned life jackets and laughed our way out to sea on stand-up paddle boards. The water was the perfect temperature, which meant 82

falling in was all part of the hilarity. We also toured around the old wrecks and enhanced our marine skills by frolicking with an amazing array of sea life, including rainbowcoloured fish, stingrays, puffer fish and (from a distance) a green turtle. From there, each moment kept leaving us breathless, from a sunset cruise with nibbles and drinks to relaxing massages with the sound of waves crashing nearby. My favourite part has to be the dolphin-feeding. It’s hard to explain the feeling that I got when I saw these animals; it was like my soul was swooning. This was an absolute one-of-a-kind experience that left me feeling totally in touch with nature. The Tangalooma staff were incredible; they were fun and chatty, and their knowledge really topped off each adventure, making the experience both educational and enriching. Constant excitement really works up an appetite. Out of the many options, Fire and Stone made us

never want to leave. The beachfront pagoda-style hut set in a lush garden is home to an Asianinspired restaurant with a menu that will take your tastebuds on an incredible tour to match the rest of your experiences. The spectacular palm-lined beach views of Tangalooma Island Resort are hard to beat. Most rooms feature a private balcony overlooking the island, as well as a large ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower. Our Hotel Deluxe booking included a delicious welcome of chocolates and wine on arrival, plus comfy bathrobes and slippers to relax in after a long day of adventuring. Make time to sneak off for a weekend of romance at Tangalooma Island Resort. This spectacular location will make all your island dreams come true, with everything you need and more to leave the rest of the world behind.
