“INSPIRE” HAS BECOME somewhat of a theme in this month’s magazine. It all started with setting clear intentions and putting them out there; when you are courageous enough to put pen to paper, anything is possible. Women in our world ignite human potential and that is as simple or as complex as it gets. Pulling back the curtain on women succeeding in incredible ways has been our stage to showcase a point of difference. We put the spotlight on Juiced TV founder Pip Russell, who is as determined as they come. (Page 14-15) In saying that, our cover is graced by something different this month. We joined Goodstart Early Learning to launch the new and largest tropical oasis in the heart of the city – a state‑of‑the-art childcare centre set to inspire young minds. Located in the middle of Brisbane’s shopping district, the new space is surrounded by brands such as Crumpler, Jack London and Jan Logan on the vibrant Adelaide Street. (Page 31) Twists, turns and changes happen without warning in this vibrant world, and at Style Magazines we use courage to create without boundaries. Strategy, focus and commitment are the secrets to time management, which is ultimately the act of speeding up or slowing down. The best result is to make sure that in the end, however you get there, it is always with euphoria.

THE HIGHLIGHT REEL One Brisbane creative reveals the truth behind her social media channels, writes Caitlyn Spanner. FACEBOOK IS 13 years old this year, Instagram is seven, and Snapchat launched six years ago. Now that you feel sufficiently old, consider what your life would be like without social media. Pretty different, huh? It’s revolutionised the way we consume content; it acts as a source of news, inspiration, and, in some cases, income. Social media is also a way for us to share parts of our lives with friends and family. We’ve become accustomed to using our chosen platforms as highlight reels, working to curate the “perfect” version of ourselves that in most cases doesn’t align with the real-life version. This behaviour comes as no surprise, with a Harvard study finding that the action of sharing something about oneself has the same effect on the brain as having sex or eating chocolate would. Brisbane creative Jasmine Dowling has a cool 186,000 followers on Instagram. She knows a thing or two about the negative and positive 16
aspects of social media, as it has played a major part in her success and is Jasmine’s main form of communication with her audience. While Jasmine’s feed has been carefully curated with beautiful imagery and content, she uses Instagram Stories as a platform to show the human behind the feed. In her Stories, she swears, talks about her sleep patterns, discusses the pain of tax and BAS, and is a generally down-to-earth person with a story very similar to yours or mine. “I really like using the different media to show the full picture,” Jasmine says. “I feel pretty strongly about the negative effects of social media on those consuming it and I personally feel it would be unfair to only show the curated feed.”
Jasmine adds that the Instagram Stories give her a bit of a reality hit. “It’s very easy to get lost in a perception of yourself,” she says. “Being a lot more open and less critical of what I am posting on Stories allows me to not take the whole thing (and myself) as seriously.” Of course, Jasmine has learnt a few lessons along the way; being so open about the creative process has led to some people replicating her work. “It’s very disheartening,” Jasmine freely admits, “but you take the good with the bad. I may open my life up to be judged or replicated but I always keep in mind that what someone does with that is none of my business.” READ MORE ONLINE

AS THE NEW year commences, perhaps a resolution is also in order. Have you considered making a commitment to dress head-to-toe in Aussie style? And no, I’m not just talking about slipping on a singlet and a pair of thongs. Australia is home to an incredible array of remarkably successful designers who are inspired by the country’s natural surroundings, so it makes sense to trust their judgment when dressing for almost every occasion. Whether it be pairing the textbook set of swimmers with a bold beach bag or matching a spot-on choker with the ultimate jacket, homegrown designers provide you with infinite choice. STYLING OUR HOMES for a seasonal change can often seem all too difficult, especially when it comes to sprucing up your interior space for the cooler months. Interior stylist Morgan Braithwaite says there are plenty of simple ways to approach autumnal design. “The illusion of warmth can be achieved through ambient lighting,” Morgan says. “This can include a table or floor lamp, or a collection of candles to be lit on a cool evening.” Morgan explains that layering with textiles and soft furnishings will also give your home a cosy feel. She suggests commissioning custom ottomans or floor cushions made with a plush, moody fabric. We often reach for gleaming golds and rich reds in autumn, but Morgan says these bright colours will be replaced by moody tones and metallics in 2017. “Navy is going to be a hit in interior colour this season,” Morgan says. “It is a great alternative for dark charcoal and black if you need a dark tone to bring contrast into your interior scheme. Navy looks fresh against white and creates a bold, dramatic palette when paired with metallic tones.” A little inspiration may be all you need. Morgan is available for complimentary styling sessions at Homemaker The Valley to help you welcome autumn into your home. KICK LIKE A GIRL FOR YEARS, PEOPLE have worked to prevent gender from limiting career paths, and 2017 has seen a major breakthrough in Australian sport. I’m talking, of course, about the introduction of the AFL Women’s competition. Little girls around Australia can now pull on their footy boots and hope to one day follow in the footsteps of their new female sporting heroes. “I want girls to be able to see me and think, ‘If she can do it, I can do it’,” says marquee player Sabrina Frederick-Traub. The inaugural round of the AFLW was a hit, with spectators spilling from jam-packed arenas, keen to get a glimpse of history in the making. The Lions ladies won their first round; a testament to their incredible effort on and off the field.
PHOTOGRAPHY: DANIEL CARSON/AFL MEDIA
The Brisbane Lions women are kicking goals on and off the field, writes Sophie Catsoulis.
“I want girls to be able to see me and think, ‘If she can do it, I can do it.’” “Stepping onto the field to play the sport you love at the highest level – no one can take that away from you,” Sabrina says. But this euphoria once seemed entirely out of reach. “I never thought I’d be playing in a semiprofessional league and getting paid for it,” Captain Emma Zielke admits. The AFLW is combating sporting stereotypes
one incredible pack mark at a time, opening up the game and the entire AFL culture to a wider, more female-inclusive audience. But in the whirlwind that is the first season of AFLW, Sabrina insists that there is one goal that surpasses all others: all she wants is to enjoy every moment of the experience. READ MORE ONLINE

Annika Launay & Brianna Cicchelli with children
FAMILY IN FOCUS Briana Cicchelli and Annika Launay of PDPR Marketing and Creative share their story and explain the importance of economic empowerment. ON ANY GIVEN day, you’ll find sisters Briana Cicchelli and Annika Launay in their Milton marketing office, keeping an eye on their restaurant, Fromage [The Cow], or juggling babies, school pick-ups and home renovations. Business partners and best friends, Briana and Annika describe their busy life as a beautiful adventure. Their hard work is also driven by a desire to build a great future for themselves and their daughters. The sisters were private-school educated and from a stable, loving home. At the age of 30, personal tragedy meant that Briana suddenly found herself with two mortgages, a toddler and no way of paying for the lifestyle she had come to know. “I’ve always worked, but to effectively triple your stylemagazines.com.au
salary overnight is a challenge,” says Briana. “It has taken three very hard years to build back some semblance of normality. Becoming independently financially-sound has been a huge learning curve.” The PDPR team has come a long way in a short space of time. They believe their success is largely due to a series of carefully-calculated business decisions and an ability to trust each other implicitly. “Annika is detail-oriented and procedural, while I look at the big picture,” Briana says. “We make a seamless, highly-effective team.” When it comes to establishing a work/life balance, the working mums see it as constantly making a choice. “I feel torn when other little girls are playing
dress-ups and mine has set up her own office and is pretending to write emails to clients,” Briana tells us. “Annika is still finding her feet as a new mother, but we are in this together and we help each other out when we need to.” Marketing is a competitive field, but the driven duo does have some advice for young women who are considering work in the industry. “Work hard and stay humble,” Briana says firmly. “You need to be considerably strong yet always act with empathy. MINIMALISM FIRST GAINED popularity in the mid-1960s, when it was introduced to the world by artists and sculptors who avoided obvious symbolism and emotional meaning in their work. The meaning of minimalism has now crept into
modern language, and it has become a distinct trend in fashion, music, design and architecture. With this trend, there’s only one key question to answer: do you need it? If an item is a want rather than a need, it doesn’t belong in the space.
Jade + Amber Ladurée Beauté Paris Amadine candle $85
The minimalist movement will continue to thrive in 2017, and pastel shades are also set to make a comeback. If you’re ready to embrace some flossy pink and aqua tones into your home, keep minimalism in mind and use only what you need.

GENERATION AUTHENTIC WHILE STREET STYLE has always existed, the phenomenon has only become globally-recognised in recent years, thanks to the internet and social media. Now, even the most powerful fashion publications are unable to ignore its influence. Bill Cunningham is a trailblazer of street style photography; he first started snapping candid photographs for The New York Times in the late 1970s. For years, the self-taught photographer gained international recognition for his work, as he preferred to document authentic personal style to celebrity fashion. This movement has changed the way we observe trends; cutting-edge fashion is no longer reserved for the pages of glossy magazines and the runways of fashion shows. These days, it seems as though street style photography may be just as important as traditional fashion mediums – perhaps even more so. Some of the biggest labels in the fashion industry have recognised that there is value in aligning with stylish social media influencers. Many brands have made a splash by lending items from their latest collections to popular fashion bloggers and Instagrammers, hoping that the social media

superstars will be snapped outside fashion week shows while wearing the gear, thus achieving the ultimate instant street-style status. But has the evolution of street style taken away from the reality of this fashion documentation? Late in his life, Cunningham famously explained, “I am not fond of photographing women who borrow dresses. I prefer parties where women spend their own money and wear their own dresses... When you spend your own money, you make a different choice.” These views align with those of longtime top-tier fashion editors and critics, who recently dubbed the new wave of fashion influencers peacocking outside the runway shows as “desperate” and even “embarrassing”. These opinions, expressed after Paris Fashion
Week in September last year, are said to have instigated a war between journalists and bloggers. The comments were addressed in a number of lengthy blog posts and open letters explaining the influencers’ shock at how nasty and biased the comments were. Zanita Whittington, an Australian model turned popular blogger, wrote to The Daily Beast and explained that there was no acknowledgement of how much the blogger scene is “valued by magazines and designers, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many photographers making incomes out of it. [Fashion publications] are the ones supplying the demand. That’s the definition of hypocrisy.” READ MORE ONLINE

CULTURE ME UP! You can experience a weekend of culture right here in Brisbane, writes Sophie Catsoulis. ARE YOU SICK to death of doing the same thing every weekend? There are only so many bars and 24/7 McDonald’s, and even Netflix has its limits. Ditch the sloppy stereotypes and spend your next day off in style. FRIDAY Say goodbye to crowds, uncomfortable chairs and overpriced portions at your usual after-work watering hole. Instead, pack a Parisian-inspired picnic and enjoy it under the stars. All you need is a baguette, a blanket, some bubbly and a big tree, which you can find at our very own New Farm Park. A little Édith Piaf on the playlist wouldn’t hurt!
UNLEASH YOUR INNER ART CRITIC. YOU MIGHT JUST SURPRISE YOURSELF!
GOMA
SATURDAY Wake up and smell the art! Head on down to GOMA and feast your eyes on their latest exhibit – there’s always something incredible to experience. From an adult-sized slide to a furry wall and a room bursting with balloons, you’re sure to be enthralled for hours. And the best part? You’ll be far too tired to hit up the same old clubs after such a jam-packed day!
Booming Brisbane suburbs you need to invest in now.
SUNDAY Did someone say brunch? The Brisbane Jazz Club serves up a tasty selection of Sunday-morning essentials with smooth sounds and a view to boot. Gaze out at the river and chow down on everything from eggs to pastries. Be sure to applaud loudly and click along in true jazz style – but only on two and four, please! A weekend of culture is even easier than it sounds. Start Monday hangover-free and with a weekend full of impressive stories to share. Eat your heart out, Parisians; Brisbanites are on the rise. Place Estate Agent Shannon Harvey reveals Brisbane’s best investment suburbs for 2017. Which Brisbane suburbs should people be investing in right now? The blue-chip suburbs that are walking distance to the CityCat, buses and trains; these areas will attract tenants for yield and buyers for capital growth. The eastern suburbs of Bulimba, Balmoral and Hawthorne just so happen to tick all of the boxes! Is 2017 a good time to invest in property? The best time is whenever you are ready. If you are waiting for the bottom of the market before jumping in, the only way you’ll know is because prices have increased and by then, it is too late.

What advice do you have for people wanting to invest? Look for a featured main street that brings attention to the area. Also, consider access for jobs and recreational facilities. Invest when you can and hold the property for as long as it takes to make a profit. I don’t know of anything in real estate that is cheaper now than 10 years ago!

TICKETS ON OURSELVES
Kristen Goldup & Jan Martin
Local Tickets, a Brisbane-based ticketing service, is transforming Australian event ticketing. FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES Kristen Goldup and Jan Martin share a love and passion for local events. It was this shared enthusiasm that led them to launch Local Tickets in 2011. Do you believe Local Tickets has had an impact on national tourism? Every city and town has their much-loved tourism events. We developed the software and services to assist the tourism industry, particularly in regional areas – to expand their market and collect valuable data. Do you think event-goers feel good about using an Australian-owned and -operated company? Our biggest competitor is an American owned conglomerate, which can be daunting and exciting at the same time. Our goal is to be Australia’s best mid-sized ticketing company. We support many small businesses and our customers
can feel good knowing that shopping with us means their dollars are being reinvested back into the Australian economy. What have been some of the largest events for Local Tickets? The best part of our job is that we get to work with a variety of events, from big to small, glam to budget and mainstream to grassroots. Our culture is not about bigger is better, but rather about highlighting how great an event is for the community. We are currently
ticketing the Brisbane River Jazz Festival, various International Women’s Day events and the Gold Coast International Marine Expo to name a few. Local Tickets has launched 49 websites in five years. What’s next? Our own office space in Queen Street Mall, a national marketing campaign and an improved Door Ticketing APP. BRISBANE TICKETS P 1300 855 580 BRISBANETICKETS.COM.AU
ALL THAT JAZZ Enjoy a glorious afternoon of music and fine wine at the Brisbane River Jazz Festival this autumn. THE JAZZ GENRE covers a wide stylistic musical range from traditional and mainstream to modern and avant-garde. The genre took the Australian music scene by storm following the sensation created in New York City in 1917-18 by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. While there was a distinct lull in popularity, a new generation of musicians in the ’80s and ’90s marked a resurgence in the interest of jazz. With a long history, the medium continues to be a valid and visible form of expression in Australia. On April 8, the Brisbane River Jazz Festival is set to attract 2000 people to Newstead’s picturesque Waterfront Park. Music-lovers and jazz enthusiasts of all ages will witness spectacular live music from a number of talented artists, including Australian music royalty. 30
One of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Kate Ceberano has achieved global success in soul, jazz and pop genres. Anthology, Ceberano’s 24th album, was released last year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her first album’s release. Ceberano is currently entertaining Australian audiences on her national tour, and she will delight the people of Brisbane when she headlines the River Jazz Festival next month. The upcoming event is set to be one of the biggest and best in Brisbane’s jazz calendar. As well as showcasing a world-class line-up, the festival will feature an array of culinary delights including food, wine, and craft beer pop-up bars. BRISBANE RIVER JAZZ FESTIVAL RIVERJAZZ.COM.AU

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:
SASS & BIDE
Head Designer Sophia Berman chats to Annabelle Beirne about the inspiration behind the latest collection, Moon Shadow. What do you believe to be the aesthetic of the Sass & Bide Design Collective? Innovative and interesting, with a focus on the new while remaining true to the core values of Sass & Bide. We are a group of designers who all have different strengths and skills, but a unified vision of what Sass & Bide style is. What is your view on the importance of fashion in day-to-day life? What we wear has the power to change our day and our mood – it can comfort us, give us strength, attract others, and communicate without words. As Head Designer, how do you manage your work-life balance? I have been fortunate to work with many amazing women, including the founders of Sass & Bide, who have inspired me in having both a career and a family. There is certainly not much time for procrastination at home or at work,
34
but creating beautiful things makes it worthwhile! How would you describe the Sass & Bide woman? She is confident and creative, with a unique sense of style. We design with not just one woman in mind, as I think Sass & Bide can be worn by many different women and in different ways. It is her love of life and her freedom of expression that makes her a Sass & Bide woman. How do you think audiences will connect with the Moon Shadow collection on an emotional level? There is a really evocative and alluring mix of unexpected textures – pleated metallic lurex fabrics, copper sequins, velvets, leather and romantic sheer georgettes. The Moon Shadow collection is inspired by a Cat Stevens song, which was a 1976 hit; which ’70s icons did you look to for inspiration when designing the collection? We were more
inspired by the feeling of the song and the time. The ’70s were alive with social change; there definitely was an influence of the women’s liberation and bohemia. Both the song and the time were filled with optimism – a new lightness. Velvet is set to make a huge comeback in Autumn/Winter fashion; what are the biggest benefits of wearing this fabric? It’s a beautiful soft texture – a little bit nostalgic or rock and [roll], depending on the styling. What 2017 Sass & Bide projects are you most excited about? One super-exciting project (that unfortunately I can’t talk about right now!), and the development of new designs and techniques for an always-evolving Sass & Bide. WITNESS THE FITNESS With so many fitness trends to choose from, excuses to avoid exercise will become a thing of the past, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. THEY SAY THAT a new year brings a new you, so there’s no better time to explore some of the emerging fitness trends that are set to dominate in 2017. We reveal the workouts that are going back to basics and those taking fitness to the future. UP IN THE AIR AntiGravity Fitness is a new and exciting low‑impact fitness trend. Combining exercise inspired by yoga, Pilates, calisthenics and aerial acrobatics in a hammock-like apparatus, you’ll achieve a gentle total-body workout. Think Cirque du Soleil for gym-goers and yoga buffs. 36
RAISE THE BARRE There’s been a slow but sure increase in hybrid classes, with many established fitness regimens making their way to the ballet barre. Brisbane-based company InspireCycle has just added Australia’s first BikerBarre class to an already impressive schedule. With a few big fitness-streaming studios making waves in the USA and the latest virtual reality technology becoming increasingly popular, who knows what could be next? MARCH17

There’s an art to adding biker brilliance to your wardrobe, writes Emma Carr. Here’s how to enjoy this enduring piece. LEATHER WEATHER, AT long last, is almost upon us. Built for utility and durability, the international symbol of cool has become a sartorial icon that continues to smash all of its competitors. There are, however, a number of factors that are worth consideration on the ever-so-difficult hunt for The One. MATERIAL GIRL The most important variable of all is the jacket’s leather. Opting for a subtle texture will ensure that the jacket is going to wear well, creasing and softening with time. Are you conscious about what’s covering your shoulders? Fear not! There are plenty of ultra-cool faux leather options in the moto-inspired trend. stylemagazines.com.au
ASOS Leather jacket with spray print $391
RIDING CROP Despite looking great when paired with secondskin jeans and fierce pumps, a hip-length jacket fails to team well with a dress. Your best bet is a slightly cropped piece. This choice will shape and tailor your entire look. TAILOR THAT Unless you’re ready to swim in your jacket, it is essential to make sure that your shoulders line up perfectly to create structure and rev that leather up to full throttle.
METAL MUST If you’re solely dedicated to either gold or silver, make sure the hardware on your jacket aligns with your jewellery collection. IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL While some would question the choice, if you’ve fallen in love with that bedazzled masterpiece, maybe its rightful home is inside your wardrobe. READ MORE ONLINE

COMPASSION IN FASHION
Stella McCartney Copper Elyse star shoes $1,185
That handbag you’re admiring may be more than just fashion-forward, writes Emma Carr. ONCE UPON A time, cutting-edge fashion meant fur, leather and wool. Today, however, consumers are much more aware of what they’re really supporting with their purchases. This shift of consciousness has made “cruelty-free” and “sustainable” more than just marketing buzz words. Many conscious creators are aiming to achieve one giant leap for animal kind without compromising on style.
STELLAR PERFORMANCE Stella McCartney has long held the torch for ethical treatment of animals in fashion. The British fashion designer (and daughter of Sir Paul) is a committed vegetarian and uses no animal products in her designs. McCartney’s label, owned by the Gucci group, has eponymous boutiques in Paris, Hong Kong, London, New York and Los Angeles. In the early days of her fashion career, Stella was criticised for refusing to produce clothes with leather, fur or feathers. Today, she remains at the top of the fashion game, and is applauded for sticking to her convictions.
Matt & Nat Dwell Central wallet $91
CRUELTY-FREE COOL Created in Montreal in 1995, Matt & Nat eschews the use of all animal products and any materials that aren’t environmentally-friendly. One would assume the brand name is the melding of two first names, but Matt & Nat is actually derived from Mat(t)erial and Nature. The design-centric accessories brand has a simple motto (“live beautifully”) and the creatives are constantly endeavouring to find new sustainable practices.

BEHIND THE MAGIC Amber Moratti of Brush and Blush talks hair and makeup trends and wedding must-haves. stylemagazines.com.au
FOR YEARS, WE’VE followed the Kardashian trend of heavy contour, defined brows and a smoky eye. But let’s face it: this look does not suit everyone. In 2017, brides are instead choosing naturally flawless skin complemented by peach tones and a soft highlight. At Brush and Blush, we specialise in bridal beauty, offering mobile and in-studio hair and makeup services for your special day. We also offer spray-tanning, lash enhancements, hair extensions, hairdressing and eyebrow grooming. Our stylists and artists embrace the individuality of each bride. We listen to their story and create a look that complements their style, hair texture and skin type. From achieving dream brows to preparing your locks for your special day, a bride-to-be’s beauty regimen can be overwhelming – but it’s also the perfect excuse for a little pampering!
EVERY BRIDE DESERVES TO FEEL BEAUTIFUL. AT BRUSH AND BLUSH, WE LOVE OUR BRIDES, AND OUR BRIDES LOVE THEIR LOOKS. IN THE LEAD-UP It is extremely important that you stay hydrated in the days and weeks before your wedding. Drinking water is the easiest way to make your skin look radiant, and your makeup artist and photographer will thank you. Talk to your brow groomer about how best to clean up your brows. Settle on a shape and tint as soon as possible to avoid last-minute mistakes. Visit your hairdresser to retouch your roots and remove dry ends. Also, consider an in-salon deep conditioning treatment. ON THE DAY To stay camera-ready, it is a good idea to carry must-have beauty products in your clutch. Brides (and bridesmaids) should carry blot powder and lip products for touch-ups throughout the celebrations and photography. Custom-made pieces by Starfire Diamond Jewellery DECODING DIAMONDS
GIFT THE GROOMSMEN
THE FOUR CS of diamonds make up the universal method for assessing a stone’s quality. The characteristics are carat (weight), cut (diamond’s interaction with light), colour (based on absence of colour) and clarity (number, nature and position of blemishes). The Starfire Showroom is a reflection of Director and Owner Shweta’s 20 years of industry experience. Shweta’s extensive knowledge and love of quality diamonds, engagement rings and bespoke jewellery allows her to create pieces that clients are able to cherish forever.
SAYING THANK YOU by giving gifts is an age-old practice. Make the groomsman gift your way of thanking your friends for renting their tuxedos, assisting in farewelling bachelor life, ushering Grandma Anne down the aisle, and not saying anything (too) obscene during your reception toast. When it comes to giving a gift to your favourite men, opt for an item that will serve a purpose; the gift doesn’t have to be generic but it definitely shouldn’t be tacky. Personalised gifts are usually well-received and can certainly be taken up a notch with a fond memory or inside joke. These mementos immortalise the bond of brotherhood during one of the most important events of any man’s life.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE.
WHERE WILL YOU GET MARRIED? Finding the perfect location for your wedding day can be quite overwhelming. Take the quiz to find out where you will get married: How many guests will you have? a) Just close family and friends. b) Family – lots and lots of family. c) Everyone you know will be there. What’s your dream honeymoon location? a) A private bungalow in a remote location. b) A tropical island. The hotter, the better. c) Wherever you go, it’ll be first-class all the way. What is the cake situation? a) One giant dessert station. b) A traditional cake covered in candied flowers and intricate piping. c) Red velvet naked cake. Choose your music: a) An acoustic guitarist. b) Classical, through and through. c) A DJ! What are you wearing? a) A flower crown. b) An embroidered veil. c) Statement lace sleeves.
MOSTLY AS: UNIQUELY RUSTIC Your wedding will be a relaxed, meaningful affair that will give you a chance to let creativity flow. You will tie the knot under a large fig tree and hold the reception in a rustic barn or under twinkling fairy lights in a giant tipi. MOSTLY BS: TRADITIONAL WEDDING You’ve always had a clear vision for your wedding, and whether it is glamorous or modest, you like to keep things traditional. Ideally, you would love to be married in a church or a chapel near the ocean. MOSTLY CS: GLAMOROUS AFFAIR There is no denying you love a good party and when it comes to your wedding day, you’re prepared to go above and beyond. For you, it’s all about the location. Whether you decide to rent out a luxurious private property or hire a large marquee and host it in a remote location, one thing is for sure: your wedding will be unlike any other.
DECIDING ON A DESTINATION FOR YOUR UPCOMING NUPTIALS CAN SEEM A BIT LIKE THROWING A DART AT A MAP AND WAITING TO SEE WHERE IT LANDS.

TAKE THE FUN OUTDOORS
KEEP UP WITH IT
ADVENTURES ENHANCE LIFE
DINING ALFRESCO IS only half the fun – things really heat up when you bring the entire cooking experience outside. Whether your style lies in contemporary country or monochrome charm, cooking in an outdoor kitchen is a great way to take advantage of the sunshine. To maximise the hours you can spend using and enjoying your outdoor kitchen, you’ll need to plan for varying levels of light. It is also important to remember that outdoor surfaces must be able to withstand Queensland weather conditions. Select durable materials such as stainless steel and make sure all cooking surfaces, countertops and hardware are recommended for exterior use. Perhaps most importantly, you must plan for storage and organisational necessities for your outdoor kitchen. Even the smallest of spaces will benefit from amenities to accommodate food preparation and clean-up. If you’re not within easy reach of your interior kitchen, you’ll also need to include cabinetry for utensils.
AUSTRALIAN MEN ARE generally slower on the uptake when it comes to new fashion trends. There are some obvious reasons for this, including differing climate, the availability of trends, and the willingness to experiment. Those who do wish to evolve should opt for the following styles: • Wider lapel suits, with at least three inches on the notch lapel and three and a half to four inches on the peak lapels. • Ties between eight and eight and a half centimetres wide. Complement a wider lapel with a wider tie for balance and proportion. • High-waisted pleated trousers. Full-cut trousers have been popular in Europe for some time, and a tailor will be your best point of contact in Australia. • Side buckles rather than belts. This option has been gaining popularity for the last four years. This great detail will ensure you are on trend. Look to your European menswear stores, and your tailor, for these trends. They are sure to be in style for the foreseeable future.
TREKKING THE HIMALAYAS, parachuting, scuba-diving, eating ethnic foods, and motorbike riding are activities I’ve enjoyed. This is because, to me, adventure is less about risk and more about pushing personal boundaries. Some people mistakenly think adventures are a method of courting danger, and that this continued desire reflects a lack of self-care. Others recognise that these sensation-seeking exploits can help a person develop holistically, allowing them to learn more about themselves, others, and the world. While I prefer to push my limits to learn more about myself, I do understand that others prefer an element of familiarity to even modest thrills. If you wish to develop an openness to experiences and go beyond your comfort zone, start by discovering different activities, visiting new places, eating different foods, or engaging in vigorous debates that test your knowledge. Lives that are experientially rich enable one to live more fully. Without challenges you will never find out what you are truly capable of.

ETHICALLY SOURCED BEANS
ATTRACTING THE GOLDEN TENANT
MENOPAUSE AND DRY EYES
RECENTLY I TRAVELLED to Kenya to visit Boyce Harries, producer of Chania Estate and Oreti Estate coffee farms. Something that resonated strongly with me was the importance of creating authentic coffee connections, reinforcing our holistic commitment to quality. At Wolff Coffee Roasters, these connections incorporate more than just product quality, economic accountability and environmental leadership. I believe an even more powerful prerequisite is social responsibility. Quality relationships are built on face-to-face meetings – not just with the producers but also those who directly link with local farming communities. As a qualified teacher, I was delighted to spend time at Makwa Primary School in Thika, Kenya. The love from all 430 students touched me deeply, and as a result we have established several initiatives to give back to this school community. How can you help? Purchase coffee beans that are ethically-sourced from roasters that care about their communities at origin.
OTHER THAN YOUR choice of agency, the most important decision in determining the success (or failure) of your rental property will be the tenant you choose. Consider the following factors when choosing a tenant for your property: • Ability to pay. The tenant’s job stability is a crucial part of supplying rental payments. • Punctuality. The potential tenant should have a history of on-time payment. • Rental history. Have these potential tenants had any issues with other rental properties? Attracting the “golden tenant” requires an agency that delivers consistent results important to each individual home owner. Therefore, it is important to use strict qualifying and screening processes when selecting an agent. This will ensure they meet your standards and marketing strategies. You’ll need an agent who matches the promise of your property; a brand that differentiates itself and demonstrates leadership in the industry will help add value to your property.
AS MOST MENOPAUSAL and perimenopausal women will attest, going through this life event can result in a world of unwanted symptoms and complications. Dry, itchy eyes are common symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome, which (unbeknownst to many) can often be attributed to the hormonal changes that occur during menopause. Artificial tears can provide temporary relief, while omega-3 fatty acids can help tackle the condition systemically with a range of dry-eyespecific formulations. A revolutionary new treatment for this condition uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to stimulate the dysfunctional oil glands in the eyelids and encourage the production of a healthier and more protective tear film. After four gentle treatments, patients will notice improvement in symptoms, with their eyes looking healthier and feeling more comfortable. At Madonna Rigney Optometry, we offer the latest in IPL treatment for dry eyes. Call us today to schedule an appointment.

FOOD+DRINK Crab, prawn and squid ink linguine with red chili and scallions
BETWEEN OCEANS The former head chef of Jellyfish is reinventing Mediterranean cuisine with innovative expertise, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. NESTLED AT THE base of the Capitol Apartments is South Brisbane’s newest bistro-style restaurant, 35 Bar & Bistro. The refined yet cosy open-plan dining area has an inviting atmosphere – everything is in sight, from the bar to the chefs in the kitchen. After we’re seated, there’s no question that the Mediterranean-inspired menu has been assembled with precision and expertise. You’d expect nothing less from Head Chef Sean Caliste, who previously led the team at Jellyfish. I can’t go past the crab, prawn and squid ink linguine with red chili and scallions. With each bite, the heat from the chili grows stronger, perfectly cutting through the saltiness of the pasta, just as I’d hoped. Soon after we finish the dish, the cocktails arrive. Just one sip of my House Peach Bellini tells me that this is the perfect combination of a palate cleanser and thirst quencher – the ideal end to any delightful dish. As the name suggests, 35 Bar & Bistro doesn’t just focus on food, and that is evident in the extensive and carefully-curated selection of beer 44
and wine on offer in the bar. The first main meal to be set down is the Salad of Bugs, and I’m intrigued by the look of the dish as well as the name. Lightly battered baby squid, roasted watermelon and shellfish sauce sit atop a colourful bed of octopus carpaccio. It’s safe to say I’ve never seen or tasted anything like it before, and it is an exceptional and innovative marriage of textures and flavours. Next, we try the corn-fed chicken breast, which comes highly recommended by the waitress. The chicken is slightly crisp on the top and perfectly succulent underneath, and the meal is complemented by the addition of parmesan soft herb gnocchi, sweet potato, buttery wilted spinach and salsa rossa. 35 Bar & Bistro is a top-shelf addition to the South Brisbane dining scene. I can definitely see myself visiting this venue again and again for an evening or lunchtime rendezvous and an afternoon tipple or two. 35 BAR & BISTRO CAPITOL APARTMENTS, 35 PEEL ST, SOUTH BRISBANE P 3846 2780 35BARANDBISTRO.COM.AU

GET YOUR GLOW ON Brooklyn Beauty Bar gives us the nitty-gritty secrets behind glowing, healthy-looking skin. FIND THE ONE Many exfoliants contain broken almond shells and even crushed pebbles. These might be OK for your feet but they’re bad, bad, bad for the delicate skin of your face, neck and décolletage! You need an exfoliant that’s not so nitty-gritty – preferably jojoba-based with wax beads. I love the Dr Spiller Jojoba Peeling Crème (RRP $71). It is so gentle you can use it every day. Not only does it hydrate as it exfoliates, it also helps to defuse any redness in your skin tone.
Our Mini Herbal Peel contains traces of over 250 natural herbs and minerals - perfect for glowing skin.

BE THE RULER As a general rule, exfoliating every three days or so is sufficient. This schedule will allow enough time in-between treatments to allow your acid mantle to naturally reform itself. CARE FACTOR If you are suffering from acne or breakouts, you should only ever exfoliate around the problem areas. Never exfoliate directly on top of the lesions or acne, as this will lead to further spreading of bacteria and slow down the healing process.
TREAT YOUR SKIN Once a month, treat your skin to a natural herbal peel. Our Mini Herbal Peel contains strains of over 250 natural herbs and minerals. The treatment is $179, takes 45 minutes, and will leave your skin with a natural glow. It’s time to shine, my beauties. LET ME GUESS. You forgot to use your ridiculously over-priced shampoo and conditioner for the third night running, didn’t you? We’ve all had to deal with flat, greasy or dry hair at some point – not to mention that strip of regrowth that’s a little too noticeable for anyone’s liking. Believe it or not, there are products on the market that take less than two minutes to apply, and they could be the solution you’ve been searching for when it comes to giving your hair body and texture. Whether it be an essential oil or a salt water spray, if there’s a will, there’s a way. And none of these products involve the dreaded (and lengthy) wash and blow-dry process!

EMBRACE THE CHANGE
A MODERN METHOD
BEST TO DE-STRESS
HOT FLUSHES AND mood changes are some of the most well-known symptoms associated with the onset of menopause. One of the less common symptoms, however, is varicose veins. During menopause, many hormonal changes occur, including a natural decline in the production of oestrogen and progesterone by the ovaries. These hormones have positive effects on the circulatory system, and fluctuations can result in the relaxation of vein walls which, in turn, lessens the force at which blood moves to the heart. If blood begins to pool downwards, this can lead to back pressure and varicose veins. As well as these hormonal changes, your metabolism slows down during menopause, leading to easier weight gain. Excess weight is closely associated with an enhanced risk of vein disease due to additional pressure. Prevention is always better than cure, so it’s important for all women to be aware of any potential complications that could arise from circulatory-related conditions.
THE MIRENA IUD is a modern and long-lasting approach to female contraception. The thin, T-shaped device is inserted into the uterus and can be used as a contraceptive and/or to control heavy periods. Mirena contains a synthetic female hormone (levonorgestrel) that interferes with the entrance and function of sperm and reduces the monthly growth of the lining of the womb. With no requirement for anaesthesia, the Mirena can be inserted by your doctor, and it remains effective for a maximum of five years before it must be removed. Your fertility will rapidly return to normal after removal. While the Mirena is extremely effective in the prevention of pregnancy, it is important to remember that no contraceptive method is 100 per cent reliable. If you are thinking of updating your contraceptive method, or looking for a way to better manage heavy periods, discuss your options with your gynaecologist to determine which method is best for you and your lifestyle.
WATER HAS BEEN used as a spiritual cleanser throughout history, with Asian and European communities regularly visiting spas and onsens for bathing rituals. These rituals remain at the heart of Japanese beauty today, as a method of helping to calm both the body and mind. The stresses of day-to-day living can take a significant physical, emotional and mental toll on us, and high stress levels can easily affect our general health, appearance and relationships. We have discovered countless ways to manage stress; however, one that is known to give instant benefits is simply making regular time for oneself. Half an hour may be all you need to rejuvenate your mind with the benefits of water therapy. Many people now engage in daily bathing rituals, in hot and cold plunge pools, as well as dry Finnish sauna and steam room sessions. For $30, you can access all these wellness facilities in the Bath House at Cosmetic Image Clinics and experience the wonders of water therapy.

CONSUMING PUNGENT FOODS such as garlic and raw onion can make us less pleasant to be around, but these are usually temporary problems that are easily fixed. Some other causes of bad breath may not be so apparent. The most common cause of regular bad breath is gum disease. Even if your gums only bleed occasionally, something is wrong. Our mouths are full of both good and bad bacteria but the longer it hangs around, the more harmful this bacteria becomes. Old plaque produces a bad smell and even brushing twice a day is not a sufficient solution. Be sure to remove plaque daily with thorough brushing and flossing. Breathing through your mouth also dries out the mouth and acidifies the plaque, irritates the tonsils and leads to “morning breath”. Enlarged tonsils can also be a major trap for bad breath. A mouthwash may help temporarily mask the problem but it is not a cure. Make an appointment today; once we find the cause, we can help with the cure.
DID YOU KNOW that dermal filler treatments can last from six to 24 months? Our dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which retains water and helps to add volume and hydration to the skin. We offer only the best products to ensure longevity and maximum results. Popular treatment areas include the lips, cheeks, tear troughs, jawline and nose-to-lip lines. Treating these areas instantly creates a refreshed, plump and hydrated appearance. These procedures are very safe when administered by a professional cosmetic injector. Many other areas are also suitable for dermal filler treatments; you can discuss all of your options with our passionate and friendly registered nurses. Skin Savers Beauty has partnered with Malouf Pharmacies to add trust to a valued profession. We offer competitive anti-wrinkle and dermal filler pricing, with no prepayment required. Our registered nurses would love to meet you, so make your booking for a free consultation in our private clinic today.
ROUNDED OR HALF-MOON shaped brows are magnifying fine lines and robbing Australian women of their youth. A semicircle eyebrow shape actually mirrors the shape of under-eye bags, drawing attention to a loss of elasticity and leading to a lacklustre, drier-looking complexion. Rounded brows reveal too much skin between the eyeline and brow, exposing the part of the eyelid that ages the fastest and drawing attention to wrinkles. Straighter brows will give your face a natural lift and a younger look. There’s no point researching botox, face lift surgery or microdermabrasion if your current brow shape doesn’t suit you; even the best face lift will be a total waste of money and time if your eyebrows are failing to complement your face shape. At The Brow Bar, we aim to help you achieve the brow shape that perfectly suits your face before you even begin researching other anti-aging options.

GIVE A LIFT The Brow Bar CEO, Chernae Silk, explains how to embrace your natural facial contour. AUSTRALIAN WOMEN HAVE long been searching for an organic solution to maintaining a youthful look. The discovery of your natural facial Lift-Lines is just one of my secrets to beating the most obvious signs of aging. The Lift-Lines phenomenon is an exclusive technique that I teach my Arch Angels at The Brow Bar. Lift-Lines refer to the five natural lines that contour the face and create a subtle lift. Our technique involves following the line of the client’s eyebrow upwards, as well as the parallel lines of the under-eyeline, cheekbones and jawline, assisting in lifting the face naturally and defining the features.
LIFT-LINES CONTOUR AND CREATE A SUBTLE NATURAL LIFT. To achieve your desired youthful look, it’s also important to consider your Lift-Lines when applying makeup. You may be inclined to use a lot of product in an attempt to cover lines and dark circles. Try not to do this – it will only age you even more! Another common mistake is the use of metallic frosted eyeshadows. This formula dramatically draws attention to wrinkles on the eyelid. Lastly, when it comes to the base, it is best
to use a tinted moisturiser (with SPF) and apply the product in upward motions. To cover imperfections, gently pat concealer on the required area. Be sure not to apply concealer to the lighter areas. A matte bronzer will also help to give your face a fresh and lifted look. These simple tricks can achieve a natural makeover. THE BROW BAR P 1800 BROW BAR (1800 276 922) BROWBAR.COM

STYLISH LIVING Home stylist Sam Cook shares her tips on decorating your living room and preparing for an open home. Sam Cook
YOUR HOME IS your happy place, but how can you make your living room more visually appealing? Sam Cook offers her expert advice. Living rooms often lack colour. Should we bring more brightness into our entertaining areas? Too often people select neutral-tone furniture and paint the walls white. [They] are then surprised to feel nothing when entering the room. Colour and light are what gives feeling to a room; don’t be afraid to use it and enjoy it. How can you maximise space in a smaller living room? Be smart when selecting furniture. People often try to squeeze too much into the room. If you’re finding it difficult to fit in all of your favourite books and DVDs, there are many fantastic storage solutions to help avoid clutter.
French Provincial Lorraine chair $253.95
What is the biggest mistake people make when putting their house on the market? Preparing your house for sale is a tricky business and most agents are focused on getting the home on the market as quickly as possible. People often fail to declutter and depersonalise. A professional
stylist can add thousands to the final sale price, and the service is not as expensive as you may think. Sessions start from $250 for two hours. SAM COOK DESIGNS SAMCOOK.COM.AU P 0481 948 567 FACEBOOK.COM/SAMCOOKDESIGN

BANISH THOSE WINTER blues! When seasons change and temperatures drop, it’s only natural to want to spend more time indoors. Just like with winter fashion, winter decorating is all about layering fabrics. Reorganise accessories, and add pillows and an extra throw to your sofa. You can also bring your focus inward by rearranging your furniture. Although wood floors create a sophisticated style statement year-round, you’ll need to cosy them up for the cooler months. Add an understated rug for warmth and texture. Instantly transform a room and bring life to neutral palettes with soft accent colours. For the final touch, a winter seat offers the perfect perch for everything from an afternoon nap to a day spent with a good book. stylemagazines.com.au

SOMETIMES THE BEST TRAVEL COMPANION YOU CAN HAVE IS YOURSELF. YOU’LL MAKE MEMORIES TO CHERISH FOR A LIFETIME!
THERE SHE GOES First-class and fancy-free. By Annabelle Beirne. WINTER IS FAST approaching Down Under, and we all know what that means: our social media newsfeeds will be full of snaps from the European summer before we know it. If it’s time for you to make your adventure of a lifetime, it makes sense to book sooner rather than later. The hardest part is often deciding where to go. My advice? Pick three close-together dream destinations in Europe to visit. If you take advantage of trains and other transport, you’ll only need to book flights into the first city and out of the third!
