hen it comes to versatility and originality in our world, it’s true that creativity is key. This edition of Style focuses on just that; it’s both entertaining and packed full of information. On page 16, Becky Lucas is providing laughter aplenty as comedy’s newest all-star who has it all. Plus, we chat to Brisbane-born Charli Burrowes, the photographer behind this months cover, about her first solo exhibition (pg.23). Turn to page 19 if you’ve ever been baffled by the cryptocurrency movement (confession: we have!), learn how to hold your own at your next dinner party as we dissect the buzzwords. Speaking of splurging, beware of your beauty bags because the Style staff have emptied theirs so you can get up close and personal with their tried and tested products (pg. 40). This month we reflect on what it means to be a powerful woman in 2018. We speak to some inspirational ladies to see how they harness their feminine power, find out what they had to say on page 12. Now that the band-aid has finally been ripped off and the new year is in full swing, it’s time to put your heels on and get into it Brisbane! FINDING YOUR
FEMININE WORDS BY TAMILLE HEAD
PAGE 12
MARCH 2018
W
hat does it mean to be a woman in 2018? Despite all the labels we’re given—career woman, working mum, stay at home mum, feminist—we’re complex creatures who can’t be pigeonholed or given one specific label. Being a woman is all about having different layers, that can be called upon when needed. We can be sensitive but strong, polite but powerful. Yet many women have spent their whole lives striving to succeed by making it in a man’s world. Adopting stereotypical masculine qualities in order to get ahead and come into their power. But things are changing. More and more, women are realising that this way of being is no longer sustainable. In the process of making our presence known in the boardroom and fighting for our rights throughout history, we have slowly stepped further into the power of the masculine and unknowingly lost connection to our natural and authentic feminine energy. While it was once about climbing to the top of the corporate ladder, now it’s more about pausing and making time for ourselves. Power is not about a corner office or a fast car, it’s about realising what is inside you and reclaiming the qualities that make us inherently feminine. If the start of 2018 is any indication, this year is all about women reclaiming their power. In the wake of the Weinstein watershed and the #MeToo movement that followed, and as we look to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, there’s never been a better time to talk about how we can reclaim our feminine power once more. P.E Nation co-founder, Pip Edwards, has adopted an
interesting method in order to reclaim her feminine power, citing Pilates as her saving grace. “It’s my new mantra. It has allowed me to connect with my female self,” she says. The modern woman lives in a time where her possibilities are endless and her potential ripe. She has the opportunity to create life on her own terms. For Melissa Ambrossini, there is no truer sentiment. She has built an empire from the core belief of living your truth and with close to 100K followers and two published books to her name, she’s inspiring a growing hoard of women to reconnect to theirs. This, she believes, is what power truly means. “Staying in your truth and speaking your truth. That’s powerful,” she says.“You can climb the corporate ladder if that’s your truth but burning yourself out in the process might not be. Staying true to yourself, your energy and your feminine power is so important because that’s why we are here.” Gold Coast woman, Angela Simson, is singing to the same tune. Her business, The Gratitude Project, has seen phenomenal growth, building a whole tribe of likeminded followers. “I think women have the ability to do anything, but in our essence, we’re more delicate and feminine than our male counterparts in the workplace. So, it’s important we respect that,” she says. “We tend to mirror and model those who went before us and the truth is, the world is changing and we need to be flexible to adjust with it and in ways that serve what we need also. So, checking in with what that means for each individual is super important.”
POWER. IT’S A FUNNY THING, ISN’T IT? WE GREW UP WITH THE BELIEF THAT MEN ARE THE MORE POWERFUL SPECIES. BUT WHAT DOES POWER LOOK LIKE FOR THE MODERN WOMAN?

With a $1500 IKEA voucher you’re winning more than just décor: you’re winning the home of your dreams.
A
s we embrace the Danish concept hygge and explore the Japanese art of tidying-up, it is clear we are, perhaps more than ever before, embracing the healing power our homes possess. IKEA Australia understands the challenge we face when trying to create a home that fulfils the needs of the soul as well as the practical needs we face every day. For example, the challenge of designing a home study that nurtures and feeds your creative spirit while still doing all the practical things we require of a study—such as providing plenty of natural light and easy, accessible storage opportunities. For the first time ever, IKEA’s team of interior designers worked with local Australian families to teach them practical styling solutions they can apply to their homes. Working with ten families around Australia, the interior designers uncovered four simple ways families of all kinds—whether homeowners, renters, double-income with kids, or young corporate couples—can make the most of their space.
GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR LAYOUT Consider how the space is used and how you can play with dimension.
CREATE IMPACT WITH COLOUR Your home is personal and unique to you, and the colours and furnishings you use are a reflection of this. Embrace a clean, neutral colour palette with pops of colour to create contrast.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT LIGHTING Natural light is ideal in your living spaces, so where possible ensure you are embracing light from windows and doors. When using artificial lighting, experiment with different layers— overhead, lamps, ambient lighting—to create lighting that is versatile enough to keep up with whatever you are doing.
LET YOUR PERSONALITY SHINE Adding the personal touches are what really make a house your home. Unpack the family photos, display the treasures you found abroad, and embrace greenery and nature.

RANGE ROVER VELAR
Everyday luxury Fulfil your curiosity at Brisbane City Land Rover.
T
here’s no denying that when it comes to vehicles built for exploring, Land Rover are the ultimate choice. Off-road performance capabilities, rugged exterior, speed, handling, and enough added accessories to give any Kardashian sister a run for their money. But Land Rover is more than just a range of people movers built to transport the family across the country and off the beaten track. As is evident from the luxe new addition of the Range Rover Velar to the already impressive lineup of performance vehicles. It has never been more apparent that Land Rover is just as at home zipping around city streets as it is cruising on the open road.
The design philosophy of the Velar is revolutionary. Striking proportions, flush door handles and the integrated rear spoiler all work to improve the car’s aerodynamics. And when it comes to tech capabilities and added extras, the options are vast. Hello, airconditioned seats. Featuring the most innovative thinking, engineering and vehicle technologies, you’ll be more than equipped to manage even the most tricky of traffic or road conditions. At its core, the Velar makes for a comfortable, stylish and safe drive. Let’s be real, your vehicle—much like your life—should be anything but ordinary, and the Range Rover Velar is just that. Extraordinary.

The Range Rover Velar made a strong first impression. From the moment I sat behind the wheel, I felt like Land Rover had certainly answered to the STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

of this car and the diversity for any lifestyle is evident. One tip would be to opt-in on the full seat control menu, trust me it will be worth it. PAGE 15
THE OTHER GIRL We catch up with comedy queen, Becky Lucas, ahead of her Brisbane Comedy Festival appearance. WORDS BY TAMILLE HEAD
I
t’s no surprise that Brisbane-born Becky Lucas has been referred to as the most exciting and refreshing voice on the Australian comedy scene. We sat down with her to see what makes her so funny. ‘Cute Funny Smart Sexy Beautiful’ is said to be a nod to your low self-esteem. But seriously, where do you draw inspiration from for your shows? It’s usually a mix of things that I’ve noticed, things that have happened to me, or hypothetical scenarios that I’ve been thinking about. Basically, coming to one of my shows is just me spouting off about things that everyone else in my life can’t be bothered listening to, so... sucked in I guess? When did you realise you were funny? I get asked that a lot and I don’t really know how to answer it. Being funny was just always something that I prioritised over other things... it was always important to me to be funny or to have funny friends or to find what was funny about a situation. How was it co-writing The Other Guy with (your good pal) Matt Okine? Did the two of you ever clash creatively? Working on The Other Guy was a huge learning curve for both of us as we were on an extremely tight schedule. I love Matt though and he’s been a huge supporter of me in my career. We have a pretty similar sense of humour so I found the collaboration easy. I think the hardest thing for us (or at least for me) was PAGE 16
having to receive notes about what we had written. We’re both so used to just thinking about something and saying it that night onstage, so it was a challenge to suddenly have to defend our ideas. With stand up comedy you have complete control whereas with television you are working with a team and there’s compromise. In saying that, the people responsible for making the show happen are some of the most talented and wonderful people so I learnt so much. Are you confident we’ll see a second season of the series? I have never been confident in anything in my life, haha. Look, with television, until you’re on set and shooting it, anything can fall apart. Everyone involved with the show would love to make another season but at this stage I can’t give you an answer either way. Fingers crossed though! Do you have a go-to joke that always guarantees lols? Yep! I’m not telling you what it is though, or it won’t be a surprise...

A New Frontier Finally at the forefront of the global consciousness, ethically produced fashion is having a moment. Jade Horrobin chats to the local girl who’s redefining the game, one biodegradable piece at a time. With more brands investing in sustainable fibres, higher wage workers and carbon-neutral production lines than ever before, we thought it neigh impossible to break into a new frontier of sustainability just yet. Tasi Travels have done just that with a stunning line of completely compostable pieces. We chat to founder Jessica Abraham about her biodegradable clothing line based right here on the Sunshine Coast. The concept of biodegradable fashion is pretty ground-breaking. How does it work? One of the key areas that fashion is so detrimental to the environment is at the end of a garment’s life. Our Tencel will completely biodegrade in 6 weeks when composted properly, so its kind to the environment in every part of it’s life. What was your inspiration for Tasi?
I was travelling in Timor-Leste when I had the idea. I found it difficult to pack for the climate – nothing I owned was light and breathable but still covered me. If it did, it wrinkled, took forever to dry, or it was just ugly! Tasi combines minimalism, practicality and style. Since you launched in 2017, what’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt about the sustainable fashion market? It has been so amazing to see so many new brands popping up (and big, existing brands shifting) who are starting to talk about sustainability and ethics. The key to this is being transparent, it’s really easy for brands to throw the word “ethical” around. At Tasi, we always try to be 100% transparent about every element of our practices and values. fter a 16-year hiatus, Melbourne electronic act, The Avalanches, debuted their much-anticipated sophomore album, Wildflower, in what was touted the comeback of the century. Since its release in late 2016, the two-piece have played a string of live shows, including a Splendour In The Grass headliner. Now, they’re about to make their Brisbane debut with a one-off Sydney City Limits sideshow at The Tivoli. We caught up with frontman, Robbie Chater, to get the low-down. What made you stick with it in all the time between albums? It became disheartening at times, self-doubt can creep in. We knew there was a good record in there, we just had to sort of figure out where it was. It was more a struggle to pull it all together. It became something we wanted to do for us, to get it finished and out there.
THE AVALANCHES
You’re missing a few band members now, how did that happen? I have always been the core of music making in the studio. When you’re not touring for so long, that can happen. How did it feel to play Splendour In The Grass? We got thrown in the deep end with
new music and new band members, it was kind of like we were flying by the seat of our pants. What can we expect from your live show? You can expect…pretty much just a big party really. A bit more rock and roll than the records. It’s a really fun show. READ MORE ONLINE

BLOCK party Cryptocurrency, blockchain, Bitcoin. What’s the deal with these buzzwords? Lately, we’re seeing an increasing number of people invest in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. But what exactly is cryptocurrency? Aimie Rigas, who left her career in media to join leading tech company, Power Ledger, helps us cut through the web of jargon. What is cryptocurrency, in layman’s terms? The internet stores information in silos that hold data, let’s call them houses. By comparison, blockchain takes that data, breaks it into millions of pieces and stores it across a network of houses. So instead of breaking into one house, you have to break into a village, simultaneously, all with different keys. Further
AIMIE RIGAS
to that, if we use the Bitcoin blockchain as an example, imagine every ten minutes a new house is built, so now the village is a country. And every 10 minutes there are more and more houses, so it becomes more secure. Cryptocurrency is the digital asset attached to the various blockchain products, such as Bitcoin, that you can buy, hold and trade. Should I be investing? There’s lots of advice that says you should only invest what
you’d be willing to lose, and I agree with that. There’s also a famous Warren Buffet quote that says “Never invest in a business you don’t understand,” so that is worth keeping in mind. What are the risks involved? Ultimately, the risk is that you lose your investment to a dodgy cryptocurrency or company. What can I buy with cryptocurrency? Lots of things! Currently 100,000 merchants worldwide accept Bitcoin.

The Magic Of Mess Siobhan Taylor speaks to Sunshine Coast artist Amica Whincop about discovering the beauty of the broken. READ MORE ONLINE
Raised in a holiday park on The Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England, Amica Whincop spent her childhood exploring the island; foraging for oak leaves, feathers and acorns. Now, living in a 100-year-old Queenslander in the country town of Gympie, Amica draws on her childhood experiences surrounded by nature to create the minimalist, abstract paintings she has become known for. “Nature has a subtle beauty that manifests effortlessly. Both simple and complex, it creates harmonic designs and colour palettes with ease,” says Amica. “I work intuitively and spontaneously, so I literally don’t know what I’m going to do until I get there. I love this because I’m a perfectionist, so it gets me out of my head and places me in the moment.”
This is reflected in her medium of choice; fluid, water-based materials (watercolour, acrylic paint, or ink). “They are immediately responsive; reminding me that life does not allow for ‘do overs’. The fluidity of my materials allows me to be spontaneous, with no plan or obligation other than to react to what is happening with the paint, the canvas, the brush and the moment.” “Letting the work form itself, I move the paint around intuitively with water, gravity and spray paint. Layering with pours and washes imitates natural processes and formations. Once the chaos of the initial stages has been resolved, I regain control by working white paint into the composition to define edges and lift underlying layers to the fore.”

As a visual artist for the digital age, it’s no surprise that when it comes to tackling her many creative projects, Charli continues to push the boundaries and learn unique new skills to stay ahead of the game. Last year Charli launched Me Oh My Girl films, which saw her explore the limits of her comfort zone. When asked how cinematography compares to her photography, Charli explains how she adores video work. “Motion is incredibly time consuming, but I feel like you have an opportunity to
tell bigger visual stories. Last year we shot a music video that ended up getting picked up by MTV for full rotation, so that was pretty rad!” she says. On the back of a huge year, there is still no slowing down for Charli as she has gone back to her roots in photography and is planning to host her debut exhibition, AWOL next month. “As a young girl attempting to navigate adulthood, I often feel particularly at war with myself and what it means to be a woman. AWOL explores the confusing world of youth and Identity.” says Charli. On Saturday, March 10, AWOL will see Albion’s French warehouse, Vielle Branche, transform into a romantic military wonderland for one night only. READ MORE ONLINE

Get back to SMART Wearable up-to-the-minute looks from Wintergarden for the weekend, the workplace and beyond.
M
en’s fashion seems to have taken a turn for the better this season. Due in part to the garish Hawaiian prints that saturated the market last year having been left behind. We partnered with Wintergarden to take a look at the latest in this year’s autumn/winter trends. Formal wear is a category of clothing that has traditionally moved slowly when it comes to adapting to seasonal trends. But the notso-humble suit has been at the centre of a style revolution of late, meaning men are now officially spoilt for choice. These days, there is quite literally a suit to suit any budget, event and personality.

In theory, starting with a neutral base might sound bland and boring, but in practice, these creamy colours are extremely palatable.
“THIS SEASON, we’re urging you to be bold.” Head-to-toe neutrals work when you play with various tones such as camel, coffee and off-white. The easiest way to pull off the trend is by picking two shades and building a tonal look by using staples. Neutrals are versatile, lend themselves to colour and they allow you more room to play with textures. PAGE 24
When it comes to keeping it classic, a white button-up shirt is an effortlessly flattering option to create a more relaxed, modern look. Or to add some colour to your layers, a light blue shirt has unique versatility worn with anything from jeans to a full suit it creates a softer look than a white shirt but offers contrast to a mainstream look. Generally, it’s common for men to steer away from colour during winter, instead favouring neutrals, blacks and deep navy. But if you do want to introduce some form of colour,

it’s best to ensure the bright hue is worn on the top half of your outfit, leading the way into a monochrome bottom. If you are nervous about introducing colour, do so by starting with a fail-safe neutral shell and playing with a more vibrant pocket square or tie.
find a home in every wardrobe. Ideal for office wear, formal events and casual occasions, how you style it is what will set you apart from the crowd.
WEEKEND
N AND & G UN
A fun way to experiment with seasonal trends is to embrace prints. No longer should you stick to block colours, this season we’re urging you to go bold, be brave and get acquainted with the check. In past seasons, checks have been limited to accessories. However, this winter, expect to see checks, inspired by the aristocracy, take centre stage. Drop a windowpane jacket to chime in with blue trousers for a conservative look or go check on check. But remember, if you do go full-body check, make sure every piece is the same pattern. Pare it back with a plain tee or jumper as a buffer against the gridlock.
RODD
When it comes to the fit, pay special attention— this is where you do not want to compromise. While slim fits reign supreme, especially for slender men, we’re also seeing the introduction of a more relaxed fit suit. The style that sits somewhere between gangster and an ‘80s power suit is being embraced everywhere you look. Now more than ever, it’s about finding the perfect fit for your body type. Regardless of the price point, finding a suit that fits perfectly in all the right places will ensure you always look a million dollars.

Details, details This winter’s ultimate trend is pairing your sharp suit with brandspanking new white sneakers, and no socks! Rolled suit leg cuffs are oh, so 2018 and an exposed ankle will have you right on trend. Where silhouettes are taking a more relaxed turn, other details are refining. This year, jackets have embraced a more simple aesthetic with additions of personal flair on the lapel pin or in the top pocket. If there is one thing for sure, accessorising is king for this autumn/winter season.

and in hand with organising a wedding comes an overwhelming number of decisions to be made. The people you need in your corner in the lead up to ‘I do’. WORDS BY JADE HORROBIN

lanning a wedding isn’t just stressful, it’s full-blown rocket science—a kaleidoscope of options, opinions, appointments and arguments. If you’re already engaged, you will have come across a little uncanny phenomenon we like to call The Opinion Apocalypse. This is when every single person you’ve ever met suddenly becomes a professional wedding planner and gives their two cents worth; even if you don’t ask for it. Trying to avoid arguments amongst your nearest and dearest is one of the most difficult tasks a bride will undertake. Instead of locking yourself in a white padded cell of solitary confinement, or folding to the unnecessary opinions of Great Aunt Mary; be selective with the people you trust to help craft your wedding day into a legendary celebration of your love.

PETAL AND PEACH
1. The One Who Knows Everybody
3. The One With Good Taste
We all have that friend who can’t walk down the street without seeing several people they know. Need a wedding car? They know a guy. Need fireworks? They know a guy. Can’t pick a wedding band? They know four. Need a food truck? You get the gist.
You need someone with an exceptional palate to help taste test your way to a fab menu. Once the mains are sorted, reward them with a wedding cake from Petal and Peach. These babies are something even the most refined food critic won’t stop raving about.
2. The One Who’s Been There
4. The One Who Can Tell Your Mother/ Mother-In-Law To Stand Down
No matter how much you plan, there’s guaranteed to be moments where it feels like the world is going to collapse beneath your feet. This is when you need a recently wifed-up bestie to tell you everything will be okay when you get to the end of the aisle.
Just like eighteen-year-olds after four tequila shots, mothers of brides are notorious for getting a little out of control. Make sure you’ve got someone who can reign them in without triggering tears.

I do crew
It’s time to pop the champagne! So your bestie is about to tie the knot and you’ve been entrusted to plan an epic last hoorah for her before she officially becomes a Mrs. People assume a hens party has a prerequisite to-do list that involves scavenger hunts, shiny poles, feather bowers, and Magic Mike-inspired gentlemen. But, it’s 2018 and things have definitely changed for the better. If you’re planning to gather your bride-to-be bestie’s favourite ladies, this is your time to go all out. Make the most of your time together by planning a staycay for the weekend, and get creative with the party plans.
IN THE DETAIL When it comes to decorations and presentation, a little detail can go a long way. If you’re hosting at home, in an apartment or at a restaurant, balloon garlands and flowers can instantly elevate the event.
GET HANDS ON If you’re planning a long dinner as your main event, why not kick things off earlier by organising a craft session or round of hens games. If you have a smaller group, an impromptu flower crown making session is the perfect idea to get everyone relaxed and chatting.
The devil is in the detail First comes the rock, then comes the celebration. Marking your engagement should be a memorable occasion. The Palace Supper Club is home to a myriad of different event spaces, offering the perfect setting for every occasion. From the private function room for up to 20 guests to the terrace which overlooks Chinatown Mall, the intimate function spaces ooze charm. If you’re more inclined to grandeur, the Palace Bar is suitable for larger functions; and the newly enclosed Palace Restaurant can be set up as an exclusive space for a seated or cocktail style engagement party. The Palace Function Packages overflow with canapés, set menus and banquet menu options. With pricing starting from as little PAGE 30
as $35 per person, the standout staff pride themselves on tailoring the perfect package. Those who are well versed in event planning will know the devil is in the detail. Offering a dash of elegance, and that extra touch of luxe, The Palace Supper Club will take care of everything. t’s undeniable that big weddings have their charm. Labyrinthine locations, ivory ball gowns and five-tiered marzipan cakes have adorned the pages of bridal magazines and the scrapbooks of twelve-yearold girls for aeons. While the enigma of the ‘big day’ will always live on, more couples than ever before are instead opting for a more elopement-style affair. Answering the prayers of all low-key couples, The Soul Pantry has partnered with the best in the biz to provide an all-inclusive ceremony filled with heart. Instead of focusing on crafting a fairytale wedding, The Soul Pantry places the importance on nurturing a beautiful foundation for your marriage. Situated on the edge of Grange Forest Park, right beside the Kedron Brook, The Soul Pantry has been a local favourite for all things flowers and food since 2013. With outstanding florals custom-made by That Flower Shop, coupled with an intimate and fun ceremony by The Hitching Post Co., The Soul Pantry is your answer to getting hitched without the hassle.
There’s a multitude of reasons to forego a larger-than-life wedding, costs being merely one (a big one none the less). With the average Australian wedding now costing upwards of $60,000, it’s easy to see why trading in all the fuss for a boutique and personalised celebration is gaining popularity. Packages at The Soul Pantry start from $3500, meaning you can focus on your ‘I do’s’ instead of taking out a second mortgage. As owners of The Soul Pantry and general aficionados of all things weddings, Patricia Foley and Kimbra Spurgin proudly celebrate every kind of love and will inject a beautiful purpose into all aspects of your day. From the photography to the cake, sit down dinner and touching ceremony, The Soul Pantry team will take care of everything for you and up to 20 of your loved ones. It’s not worth it if it’s not Insta-worthy
The value of your inheritance
Root to Ristretto in 2000 hours
In the world of styling, it’s becoming ever more important for weddings and events to be Insta-worthy creations that are the envy of all your friends, family and strangers across the globe. So here are some simple styling tips to help make your next event social media ready. • Creating visually interesting areas within your space for guests to enjoy is a perfect way to ensure your event is memorable. Think artisan market carts, bespoke bars and long grazing tables. • Layering is everything. It not only creates texture on a table but adds depth which makes for great photographs. Adding an elegant charger plate under your serving plates can make such a difference. • Lastly, organise with your photographer to arrive at your venue an hour early to ensure they can capture every last detail that you’ve put so much time and effort into creating.
Your beloved Aunt Ethel has passed away and left you with a substantial amount of jewellery. What to do now? You have little to no paperwork on the items and no clue as to what is fine jewellery as opposed to less valuable costume pieces. Family lore might suggest that Aunt Ethel’s much-beloved collection contained expensive jewels from faraway lands; however, be prepared to accept that it’s just as likely to be a mixture of fine and costume jewellery of varying quality and value. Get a qualified gemmologist and registered NCJV valuer to inspect each item and separate the costume jewellery from fine jewellery. Each item of specified value or over can then be valued according to your wishes; depending on whether you intend to keep the items and insure them, sell them, or simply scrap them for gold. Take the guesswork out of the whole process by leaving it to the pros.
No matter your preferred style of coffee, every bean takes an extensive journey to make it to your cup. The coffee bean begins by shooting roots and growing into a coffee bush. Approximately four years later is the first viable harvest of coffee cherries. When they turn bright red, they are ready to be picked. The flesh is removed and the beans are cleaned, the green coffee can now be graded, packed and prepared for export. Next up, coffee roasters will analyse samples of the beans for quality and taste before purchasing. Then the roasting happens, green beans are turned brown using a roast profile to suit the origin and the brew style intended. The final step in the bean’s journey is grinding and extracting to create that delicious cup. Next time you order your morning brew take a moment to appreciate that this process takes 2000 hours, and you drink it in less than five minutes, incredible!

cabbage with miso, daikon and pickled ginger offered the perfect amount of crunch and developed flavour. The eggplant dish was where we got to grasp the coal infusion being explored. The pickled shitake mushrooms, red pepper crisp and wakame oil had an incredible effect on the morish flesh of the eggplant. Next was poached octopus and it was sublime. Served tender with succulently charred caramel flavouring from the seasonal plums on a bed of stracciatella with fermented chilli; a true testament to local fresh ingredients. The suckling pig porchetta was perfect, deboned Berkshire pork from Shultz farm with cabbage and caraway seeds alongside sweet notes from the brine and lemon. The rotisserie meat was simply seasoned and finished with a barbecue sweet and sour sauce with chimichurri to taste. Accompanying the food is a funky wine list with 72 varieties ranging from imports to Australian favourites. Wines will change with the menu and are sure to offer something new, just as the food specials will. The menu is fresh in keeping with the E’cco ethos and will most certainly have you returning week after week. The new location has reinvented the enduring E’cco Bistro, that truly does stand the test of time.

H
aving based itself on Boundary Street for over 22 years, E’cco’s new space has enabled an experimental redevelopment for the bistro. Philip Johnson and his team have not left one garnish or plate unturned and in my opinion, have set an incredible standard for the progressive dining scene in Brisbane. The new space in Newstead’s Haven is a mixture of formal and alfresco dining, with the large open plan kitchen being the focus of the conversation. The upstairs private dining area is set to seat 36 and in amongst seated tables, on the ground level, there will be an option of kitchen counter seats as well a unique private booth sunk into the floor to dine in with a group of 12; this is where ordering of magnums of their finest will be appropriate. The interiors have been designed to show off a dark yet fresh, clean and texture filled space with 10-metre high ceilings draped in greenery. Head Chef, Simon Palmer’s new menu has been created for sharing, the dishes you combine and how you share is up to you. The menu has the same bistro feel that we have come to love yet there are more textures, simple garnishes, fresh infusions, more vegetables and subtle coal smoked accents in the dishes. Sit back, pour yourself a glass and get better acquainted with happy hour’s popular kid. Words Tamille Head. There’s no denying that the demand for gin has reached new heights of late. New and exciting variations on the drop means the humble G&T is no longer where it stops. So what’s the skinny on all things gin? • Drinking gin can actually speed up your metabolism. We’ll cheers to that! • Gin is British, not Dutch. The juniper distillate of the Netherlands, genever, is a malted spirit. Gin was developed in London and is a unique and much purer spirit.
• Far from being the refined, delicate spirit we know today, the 18th-century gins of London were produced on the cheap, often with dangerous ingredients such as turpentine. • Desmond Payne, the master distiller at London’s Beefeater Gin, is currently the most experienced gin creator in the world. • Ink Gin, produced just south of the Gold Coast is opening up its doors to the public later this year and we cannot wait!

The art of the spray tan As we say goodbye to the last of the warm days and balmy nights and head into autumn, Brooke Jesberg shares her all-time top tips to achieve the perfect sunkissed glow. Tan Tip 1: Wait for half a day after exfoliating and shaving, this will allow your skin to settle down. Tan Tip 2: Apply sorbelene cream all over your body the day before. Never use perfumed or oilbased moisturisers. Tan Tip 3: Remember, your tan will be at its best three showers after application. Tan Tip 4: Make sure your tan is blended. Our experts at Brooklyn Beauty Bar have developed a unique blending technique for a beautiful, even look.
This tanning dress can be worn multiple ways.
Tan Tip 5: Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. Everyone knows this, but the better the job you do exfoliating

Tan Tip 6: Different spray tans have different PH levels. Using the wrong moisturiser or tan extender can make your tan go orange. Check with your therapist and only use the products they recommend. Tan extenders are the bomb! Tan Tip:7 Invest in a great tan dress, designed for preand post-tanning. They are gorgeous and you can wear them to work or out and about any time. They have been specifically designed for post spray tan, the fabrics are soft, won’t rub and you can retain your modesty while still going commando. Turning back the clock
What a difference a tint makes
Hopelessly devoted to your legs
The desire for healthy skin is having widespread impact in the beauty world, and it’s not only skincare that’s moving away from anti-ageing jargon: cosmetic medicine is following suit. Celebrities may have thrown cosmetic procedures into the spotlight but despite pop culture’s influence on the beauty world, these Hollywood-inspired trends are nothing new. We’ve had the Monroes, the Twiggys, the Hepburns and the Taylors– that will never change. Some celebrities might continue to influence trends to some extent, however, cosmetic practitioners agree that natural beauty is making a comeback. With facial aesthetics, we’re definitely reverting to a more natural look. It’s all about volume replacement and redistribution. The trick is to look fantastic for your age. We are rejuvenating and enhancing existing structures – not changing or recreating.
Brow tinting is often overlooked. If you have had a bad eyebrow experience it could be the solution you have been looking for to enhance your brows. Whether your brows have been waxed too thin or the summer sun has bleached your brow hairs—getting the right colour brows for your hair colour and complexion can make a huge difference to your overall look. No matter what condition your brows are in or what style of brow you desire, with an eyebrow tint and shape from one of our Arch Angels, you can achieve a fuller-looking, defined brow, resulting in an amazing organic facelift. Since 2003, we have been transforming women to be more confident with our luxury treatments, trusted by celebrity clients such as the Veronicas. This month, The Brow Bar are offering a complimentary lash colour with every Premier Brow Experience.
A phlebologist (phle·bol·o·gist) is a medically qualified doctor who has undergone further post-graduate training to expertly diagnose, treat and where possible, prevent any form of venous disease. Seeing a phlebologist means you will get advice from a medical professional who is an expert in all things vein related and receive internationally-recommended treatments using state-of-the-art technology in order to provide optimal results. As Brisbane’s only devoted full-time phlebology practice, we offer a wide range of non-surgical treatment options. At the Leg Vein Doctor, we are passionate about consistency when it comes to patient care and I personally see each patient from the initial appointment to the completion of their vein treatment. Whether you have concerns around varicose veins, spider veins, or other vein problems put your mind at ease with a visit.

Getting the spark back at work
Is a clicking jaw joint normal?
The needs over the wants
The grand adventure of work fades after a while and, if you stay, effort is required to transcend the ho-hum. Having satisfaction and fulfilment at work decreases fatigue, dissatisfaction, and burn out. To turn your job back into joy here are some things you can do: • Identify the benefits your job brings you and be grateful. • Introduce the elements of your perfect day via bite-sized, doable chunks. • Connect with a passionate ally or mentor. • Celebrate the accomplishments of yourself and others. • Remember your job is something you do, not who you are. • Start a new project that will improve your role, tasks, or workplace. • Cease doing things that don’t contribute. Given you spend a third of your weekday at work, it’s critical you take steps to have a meaningful and joy-filled day.
Clicking in any joint is not normal and certainly not in the jaw. The jaw joint, known as the TMJ, has a protective disc that sits between the jaw and the skull. The disc is attached to muscles in front and blood vessels, nerves and other sensitive tissue at the back. When it is functioning normally, it travels with the jaw as it opens allowing it to glide smoothly, silently and without pain. Sometimes a knock to the jaw can cause a shift in this relationship but most commonly the click comes on without warning. The earlier it is treated the better. The click itself happens as the jaw moves back onto the disc, and is travelling with the disc, which is good, but each click, crunch and clunk is highly traumatic to the joint space. This can lead to swelling, inflammation and pain and further degeneration, none of which are good. Jaw health is a high priority at James Street Dentists.
You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that much of the requests made to our partners are actually a need, hiding behind a ‘want’. So, the statement ‘I want us to spend more time together” could be heard as “I need closeness and intimacy in my relationship to feel secure”. Of course, that is what you might want to say, but the fear of being vulnerable with your partner prevents you from doing so. In relationships, we often skirt around the need we have for fear of upsetting our partner and creating conflict. At the same time not expressing our needs leads to tension and misunderstandings. When you do start to discuss the real needs behind the wants you get to experience real communication. Stop playing the mind-reading game and saying things like, “you should know what I want”. To create real intimacy, we need to allow ourselves to be vulnerable.

When it comes to Australian beauty brands, there’s no bull. Living in one of the harshest environments in the world means us local girls know a thing or two about looking after our skin. Homegrown skincare and cosmetics brands forgo the unnecessary fluff and instead focus on maximising nourishment using natural ingredients. Partially thanks to our botanically diverse fauna (but mostly thanks to the brilliantly creative Aussie brains who’ve decided to solve their own skincare woes by launching a brand), our little slice of paradise is now amongst the world leaders in skincare and cosmetics. From innovative brands like Frank Body, to organic and vegan products like INKA and SALT by Hendrix, and tried and true Aussie legends Aesop—we don’t need to look too far afield to find the best beauty buys in the game.

EXPLORE Like a local There is nowhere quite like Cape Town, writes Christie Sutherland, let me show you around. LLANDUDNO BEACH
F
or me, Cape Town was home for twenty-one years before immigrating to Australia. And it is true what they say: you take where you live, or in this case, where you lived, for granted. Cape Town’s beauty is quite extraordinary and the long flight is more than worth it. Especially when, as Australians, the exchange rate is on our side. The choice of what to do and where to go is an overwhelming one. So I thought I would break things down like a local. Stay: Don’t settle in one place, each neighbourhood has a unique culture and charm. If you are staying in an Airbnb look for places in Vredehoek to get you started. Explore: Sightseeing will take you on a journey like no other; venture up Table Mountain, have a picnic on Signal Hill or take a boat out to Robben Island. Town’s very first modern art gallery—a true architectural feast! Camps Bay, Clifton, Kalk Bay and Llandudno are all beaches worth enjoying a granadilla (passion fruit) ice-block at and waiting for the sun to set. Camps Bay is known for its bar culture and beautiful coastal restaurants, namely Cafe Caprice and The Round House. If you are wanting more of a city feel, head over to town and enjoy Kloof Street House or Long Street. Oranjezicht Food Markets are worth the weekend stroll and The Old Biscuit Mill and Green Market Square will be able to show off African crafts and local produce. Eat: Cape Town’s dining scene is one to be reckoned with! Be sure to try Pot Luck Club, La Calombe, Osteria Tarantino and Test Kitchen! Visit local wineries in Steenberg, Constantia and make the trip to Stellenbosch. Stop for a long lunch at Babylonstrone’s Babel—it will blow your mind. Make the adventure your own!
