EDITOR’S NOTE

Hello! Welcome to our March edition. It’s been a while since we partnered with a jewellery brand for our cover shoot, so we were beyond excited to work with brother and sister team, Hannah and James White, of Robert White Jewellers this month, because, well, who doesn’t love beautiful jewellery?! We chose Donna Chang Restaurant as our location and some of our favourite Australian fashion brands, including Brisbane designer Isabella Longginou – we think you’ll agree that Donna Chang’s decor and architecture is the perfect setting for these stunning pieces.

This month’s Wellness themed mag includes chats with Nicole Hall who shares her Sunday rituals for success, we peek inside the bag of Emily Skye, meet Daina Lindsay of PONO Probiotics and other inspiring Brisbane women to watch in 2019.

Reclaim your SUNDAYS Health and fitness influencer Nicole Hall tells us how to successfully prepare for a productive week. @__NICOLEHALL

WORDS BY JASMINE ROLFE

W

way or another, though there are small things we can do to streamline and enjoy our week, as Brisbane health and fitness influencer Nicole Hall explains. Having a clear mind is Nicole’s key to managing her overflowing cup of busy, revealing her five Sunday rituals for refreshing her mind, getting a restful sleep and giving herself a boost of energy to start her week.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMMAJO HUTHMAN

earing our busyness like a badge of honour, oftentimes we find ourselves saying ‘yes’ to professional and personal commitments when we are already stretched for time and as a result, our health and fitness goals get pushed to the wayside. Nowadays we are all busy in one

SUNDAY RITUALS FOR SUCCESS 1. SLEEP (AND A LOT OF IT)

3. FOOD FOR FUEL

I typically start my Sunday by not setting an alarm; it can be so jarring to wake up to that noise, so on Sunday I’ll let myself wake up naturally. Besides, if I know I have extra hours to sleep I’m going for it.

When it comes to food for the week I’m an advocate for doing whatever works for your health goals. I know some women shop their groceries online while others are strict meal-preppers; I’m a bit of a mixture. I will often do a quick grocery shop but I’m lucky enough to have a meal-prep company deliver some fresh, tasty meals for me as well. I’m all about that convenience!

2. FRESH AIR Not checking my phone or social media on Sunday before getting some fresh air, is so important to me. We get so caught up in it during the week so I try to reduce my screen time first thing in the morning. My partner and I will then pack our fur babies into the car, head to the coast, jump in the ocean and just breathe. It’s almost as if the fresh air semicleanses our minds from the busy week. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

4. MAKE A PLAN By Sunday afternoon I’m already feeling fairly refreshed and I set about planning my week ahead. I’ll take out my diary and put everything that’s in my head, onto paper – my work commitments, travel time and even my meals. I always find that I have a clearer head if I have some direction and it makes me more excited going into Monday.

5. DON’T HATE, APPRECIATE My life, particularly over the past year, has gotten so hectic and it’s hard not to get highstrung and caught up in all of it. The way I stay grounded is by gratitude journalling because it’s super quick and reminds me what I have to be grateful for. It really changes my state of mind and brings me back to earth. We’re all human and there are some days when we’re just not feeling ourselves. It’s on those days that I read back over my journal and it instantly reminds me what I’ve accomplished and sparks my motivation again. The other game-changer for me that I’ve only just started this year is meditation. I know it’s a hot topic in the wellness industry but I use the App called ‘Headspace’ which has a timer and I don’t think I’ve ever heard the end of one, because I always pass out beforehand. I’ve never had a deeper, more restful sleep in my life. I love sleep if you couldn’t already tell.

Technology has now become so accessible that almost every person has an online presence. From businesses and brands to our next door neighbour, you can find out absolutely anything about anyone in just a few clicks. While it’s convenient when it comes to making connections, getting information, or simply getting to know someone whom you’ve just met, social media can hide some pretty big secrets, and create a façade that seems all too good to be true. WORDS BY LAURA FRENDON Karina Irby is the owner and founder of Australian swimwear brand Moana Bikini, the part-owner and founder of fitness program Bikini Body Burn, and an influencer and inspirational woman to over one million Instagram followers. While she’s incredibly inspiring due to her success at such a young age, Karina is also encouraging women all over the world to be comfortable and happy with their bodies and forget the filters and the photoshop. Her swimwear brand, Moana Bikini, represents her carefree spirit and inspires those who wear it to feel confident when doing so. Karina tries to embody this philosophy herself by sharing real and raw images on her social media channels, purposefully pointing out her flaws and imperfections to all her followers to

PAGE 8

realise that it’s perfectly normal to not look like the models on Instagram. Despite her confidence and bravado, Karina hasn’t always been like this and admits that she used to edit her photos herself when she first started out. Since then, she’s begun to take her own advice and no longer cares about what the online trolls have to say.

“It’s truly liberating when you start doing things for yourself, taking actions for yourself and loving yourself just the way you are.” MARCH 2019

“I’m passionate about FEMALES feeling

safe, confident, & comfortable in their own skin.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICHARD KOTCH

While she understands it’s not as easy as flicking a switch, Karina believes the first step is to simply believe in yourself. “I totally understand how people can get stuck in the negative feedback loop, especially when you throw social media comparison into the mix. “Like learning anything, it’s about repetition and positive reinforcement.” Since gaining such a large following, Karina is trying as hard as possible to incorporate her morals and views into the Moana brand. She wants both Moana and Bikini Body Burn to help girls all over the world feel and be the best versions of themselves and create an environment online that helps women completely and confidently be themselves.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

This is truly the meaning and goal behind Moana Bikini and Bikini Body Burn and is something I really strive for throughout both businesses, as well as through my social media account.”

Karina is proud to be a curvy woman, and voluntarily displays her scars and marks all over her body, which have been caused throughout her struggles with eczema. While she was once ashamed of them, Karina is now proud to flaunt who she really is and wants other girls to start to do the same. “Social media is such a powerful tool, but people often focus on its power for negative reasons and its ability to promote unhealthy comparisons, but I think it’s just as powerful for positive reasons and I am really trying to reinforce that!”

Preserve the planet Having recently announced a range of sustainable, slow fashion, Biome explains how we can make conscious decisions when it comes to filling our wardrobes. The fashion industry is currently one of the biggest polluting industries in the world. From textile waste to human rights violations, this “fast fashion” mentality is quickly killing our planet. As leaders in the eco retail space, Biome are offering their customers an easy way to become a part of the Slow Fashion Movement. Biome aims to support and showcase brands who are leading the way when it comes to ethical and sustainable fashion. As advocates for the environment, Biome want to become a part of the solution when it comes to the pollution created by the fashion industry. They now stock a variety of brands online, with the option to click and collect in store,

and frequently hold clothing swaps, mending workshops, and a number of other workshops to encourage people to make the most out of the clothing they are choosing to purchase. The small businesses and slow fashion brands Biome partners with are nothing but passionate about making positive impacts on the environment, and choosing to support them instead of fast fashion brands, can make a significant, long term difference. By purchasing from a slow fashion label, you are directly supporting a business that is trying to compete with conglomerate fashion brands. While it is more expensive, you can be rest assured you’re investing in a good quality garment, and more of your dollar is being

given to the people who made your clothes. Embracing slow fashion doesn’t necessarily mean buying new garments all the time from slow fashion labels. It means stocking up on quality, key pieces that you’ll want to wear time and time again, and choosing to swap and trade your clothes with friends, rather than throwing them away. Meet the

DOCTORS DR RAYMOND GOH “Our practice provides a collegial environment where each surgeon brings their individual experience, style, and approach to surgery.” What drew you to your area of specialty? Seeing the variety of challenging cases that required creative thought to be formulated and executed, from both a functional and aesthetic perspective. How do you stay motivated? My patients are my number one motivator - if their surgery has changed their life for the better, that motivates me to apply my experience and skills to others just like them. If you weren’t a surgeon, what would you be doing? A professional fisherman with my own travel fishing show.

DR MATTHEW PETERS “Dr Raymond Goh and I established VPS as we wanted a collegiate workplace that offered our patients outstanding care from exceptional practitioners.” How long have you studied for? I haven’t stopped. It took 17 years to achieve my formal plastic surgery qualification, but I continue to learn daily. What’s the most rewarding thing about your job? Working with great patients to achieve an outcome we are both happy with. If you weren’t a surgeon, what would you be doing? I would be a struggling artist with a paint brush. What is something you enjoy outside of work? Sunday lunch with the kids.

We chat to the talented team from Valley Plastic Surgery to discover what drives them to change lives through plastic surgery, and what motivated them to enter the profession

DR ALYS SAYLOR “Having decided I wanted to be a surgeon in my teens, and having spent 24 years studying and working as a plastic surgeon, I can’t imagine doing anything else, nor would I want to.” What drew you to your area of speciality? I’m fascinated by the history of the profession, the artistry involved, and the privilege of being part of a patient’s need or desire for undergoing surgery. How do you stay motivated? I don’t find it hard at all, especially as a breast specialist. The patients I see each day motivate me, and present me with an infinite variety of canvases to work on. What would you do if you weren’t a surgeon? My friends tell me I should become a chef and open a restaurant ‘in my spare time!’

READ MORE ONLINE

DR DREW CRONIN “Whether it’s recreating a breast for a woman that’s had a mastectomy, or performing a tummy tuck on a mother after she’s had her family; we have the ability to give people back something that, for whatever reason, they had lost.” How long have you studied for? Forever. Plastic surgery continues to evolve and techniques are refined all the time. It’s exciting to learn about new developments and changes as they occur. What do you find most rewarding? Being able to create lasting change in my patient’s life. It’s enormously rewarding to see their self-confidence return and they often find a new zest for life. What do you do in your spare time? Spend time with my wife and daughter. Preferably at the beach.

DR KATE DE AMBROSIS “There are many facets to my job - I help families treat children with eczema, surgically manage skin cancers, and prescribe and explain the science behind topical treatments in skin diseases.” How do you stay motivated? The balance between home and career is a work in progress, but the wonderful staff at VPS are my second family, and are always ready to support me. If you weren’t a surgeon, what would you do? Growing up I wanted to be a journalist – I’d love to create an ‘all things skin’ magazine for patients at our practice. Something you enjoy doing outside of work? Enjoying time at home with my husband and our twins aged 7, toddler 2 and newest addition 8 week old Jack!

Rich history Sue Gaylard of Avenue J Jewellery explains why antique jewellery should hold a special place in your collection. Along the beautiful Mooloolaba beachfront you’ll find a jewellery store like no other. Offering an extensive range of antique, modern, and handcrafted jewellery, Avenue J Jewellery has something in-store to suit everyone, even the most sophisticated of jewellery lovers. Owner and curator, Sue Gaylard, has over 20 years of industry experience in sourcing, selling and discovering unique and timeless collectible treasures from around the globe. Her passion for antique jewellery sparked from a love of all things antique as a young girl, and was nurtured through her time at Kellies Antiques in Brisbane where she worked as store manager for 15 years. Sue works closely with all of her customers, developing an understanding of their particular style and sourcing unique one-off pieces specifically PAGE 14

suited to their requests. With Kellies closing its doors in recent months, Sue is hoping to reconnect with many of her original Brisbane customers. Whether your preference is for antique or modern jewellery, there is a very unique sense of excitement and nostalgia that purchasing jewellery evokes. When buying antique jewellery in particular, there is an overwhelming sense of sentimentality that comes with owning a piece that has a beautiful history. In a modern world, what can be more impressive and exciting than becoming a part of the story that an antique jewellery piece has to tell, creating an heirloom for generations to come?

Avenue J Jewellery has the most extensive collection of antique jewellery in Queensland, including pieces from the Georgian, Edwardian, Victorian, and Art Deco eras. They also house an exquisite modern collection including diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, morganite, opals, Tahitian and Australian South Sea Pearls, and handmade designer pieces from an in house jeweller. Sue’s beautiful selection of antique, modern, and handmade items are worth venturing up to the coast for. AVENUE J JEWELLERY 47-51 MOOLOOLABA ESPLANADE, MOOLOOLABA P 5444 4422 AVENUEJCOUTURE.COM.AU

Animal Lovers UNITE Styler Kiri Johnston shares the story of the lady she met last year in Bali who inspires her daily by saving neglected, abandoned and abused dogs.

O

ver a year ago, I came across Bali Rescue Dog Squad on Instagram, which is a privately owned, not-forprofit animal welfare organisation that focuses specifically on dogs based in Bali. Alison Gray, a 47-year old Malaysianborn Australian stepped out of her comfort zone and left her six-figure salary behind to make the move from Darwin to Bali, around six years ago. Alison always knew she’d end up in a third world country helping others, however she didn’t expect to gain such a strong passion for helping dogs. Over the past five years, Alison has rescued and rehabilitated around 500 animals. Her main goal is to give these animals a second chance at life and find them a loving forever home. She’s truly an inspiration to me and many others around the world. As an owner of two beautiful dogs (one rescued from RSPCA Noosa) and a regular Bali visitor, Alison’s story resonated with me on a deep and emotional level. So, in June last year, when my boyfriend and I visited for a holiday, I got in touch with Alison and made a plan to visit her and the dogs whose journeys I had followed so closely for the past six months. We scootered 30 minutes away from Ubud, through the bumpy roads amongst the rice fields to visit one of Alison’s safe houses – with absolutely no tourists in sight. Although I’ve visited Bali plenty of times, it was quite a culture shock seeing a different area where the locals lived, away from all the glitz and glamorous beach bars, Insta-worthy cafes and stylish boutique stores that the island has PAGE 18

come to be known for by Westerners. Along the way, we stopped in at Sunset Vet Ubud to grab some food and supplies as a special gift for the dogs. Alison met us at the end of the street and directed us down a rugged road to the safe house, where we arrived to excited dog barks and her staff member’s friendly faces. The humble safe house was mainly outdoors, had three rooms and there were around 30 dogs being cared for when we visited. We got lead into the isolation room, where some of the dogs are kept whilst they are being treated. Alison also has a team of staff who live at the safe house, although she lives in another house where approximately 12+ dogs live, too. I have always loved animals and I truly believe that these dogs, although living in third world countries, deserve caring homes as much as our beloved pets are lucky enough to have here in Australia. Visiting the safe house and talking with Alison has given me a completely different perspective. Alison believes she has lived the good life whilst in the corporate world in Australia and is happy to live a humble and peaceful life ensuring the dogs have everything they need. For the past year, I have donated and supported Alison’s rescue and believe that her cause is one that deserves more attention. So, when I saw Alison reaching out for volunteering help via Instagram, I was quick to offer my services, being that I work in social media management on a day-to-day basis. I wish to spread Alison’s story and promote Bali Rescue Dog Squad in the hopes that more

ALISON GRAY, FOUNDER OF BALI RESCUE DOG SQUAD

people will fund and support organisations like hers. She funded her rescue independently for the first four years and now solely relies on donations, fundraising and social media awareness to continue running her passion. Without these donations, she cannot continue the amazing work she is doing. Alison hopes to one day open a third safe house to rescue more dogs to care for and she needs our help to get there. I believe that we all have a real purpose as to why we are here today – we just need to find what our passion is and what sparks joy for us. Everyone that knows me well, knows I have always wished to open my own animal sanctuary and hopefully I will end up doing that one day! In the meantime, I will continue to support people who dedicate their lives to saving animals, just like Alison. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

Here comes the bride Put your best foot forward as you walk down the aisle, with these tips from Dr Nicholas Kemp on how to rid your leg veins well before the big day. How soon before saying “I do” should a consultation be booked? Most patients require multiple sessions in order to get the results they desire. With treatments usually spaced between four and six weeks apart, you may need up to five months of treatment after your initial consultation. Make an appointment as soon as you get engaged to ensure your legs have healed and all bruising has settled down before saying “I do.” How can healthy legs give an added confidence to someone on their wedding day? Organising a wedding involves a lot of running around beforehand and often standing on your feet for the entire big day. If you have your heart set on those blue Manolos, but

know you get painful symptoms from your veins, have them treated so you feel confident when taking photos. Who needs to be prepping their legs for the big day? Unfortunately, venous disease can be hereditary, so you may need to bring the mother of the bride along with you. Booking concurrent appointments will give you time to brainstorm everything else on the long, wedding to-do-list. You also might need to use the wedding as an excuse to get your hubby-to-be to pay attention to his own legs, and book his own appointment before his veins worsen. What can be done to maintain perfect legs from the wedding day through

to the honeymoon? Consider mixing up your footwear on the big day and remember to always stay hydrated and keep active to maintain venous health. Should you be planning a long haul honeymoon, make sure you pack compression socks for the plane flight to reduce your chance of ankle swelling, ensuring you look your best on the beach. aunching one impressive venue after the other, Howard Smith Wharves is fortifying itself as the ultimate dining and beverage precinct of 2019. Cue the unveiling of their latest venue, the longawaited riverside establishment ARC Dining and Wine Bar. With its white-washed walls, chapel-like peaked ceiling and eclectic décor designed by none other than Anna Spiro and her team, the light-flooded venue seems to float above the Brisbane River. Strolling past the olive trees and into the restaurant solo, I was at first apprehensive of being in my own company. That was until I was seated at arguably the best table in Brisbane, with floor-to-ceiling views of the Story Bridge hugging the city skyline. Infamously indecisive I asked the friendly waitress for her meal recommendations. Suggesting I order the Barbecue Squid, Preserve Lemon and Salt Bush to start, I’ll admit I wouldn’t have ordered it if she didn’t insist but I’m oh-so-glad she did. The entree was beautifully presented and let me tell you, it was like an evolving flavour explosion. Smokey at first, the dish took a zesty turn before the squid itself shone through and I’ll go as far as saying this was the hero dish of the experience. I fan-girled over the entrée for a little while longer before my main arrived; Saddle Tail Snapper, lemon buttered corn and wing beans

with a side of whey and chamomile Dutch carrots and tomatoes, pickled blueberries and perilla. The fish, while mouth-watering on its own, was only made more delicious by the buttery, sweet corn bed it sat on. It was a perfect dish to enjoy by the water. Now to sip back and wait for dessert. Resembling a Snickers Bar with flaky chocolate, roasted peanut ice cream, caramel and chocolate Crisp, it was an indulgent feast for the eyes and tummy and lasted a grand total of three minutes. Tucked away at the far end of the Howard Smith Wharves precinct, ARC Dining and Wine Bar is an elegant and Insta-worthy venue you’ll want to make a reservation for ASAP. Food for thought Passionate foodie and practicing nutritionist at JCN Clinic, Jessica Cox, gives us her best tips on what to eat to keep our guts and brains healthy. What are some great foods we should be eating to improve brain function? Foods rich in essential fatty acids such as salmon, cod, tuna, and sardines, cold pressed flaxseed oil, extra virgin olive oil and walnuts are a great place to start, as our brain is made up of these types of fats. We also want foods rich in amino acids to support cell structure and neurons, which includes a diversity of protein found in meat, fish, eggs and legumes. Choline rich foods also support neurons, and can be found abundantly in eggs and liver. Can our gut and brain health be linked? A healthy gut is also essential for a great brain function. Poor gut function and gut inflammation will place pressure on our capacity to think clearly, often referred to in nutrition terms as ‘brain fog’. There is a ’neural highway’ between the gut and the brain that is fundamental in keeping our gut STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

brain connection in check. Should we be eating these foods at a particular time? It doesn’t matter when, just aim for a diversity of these foods within your dietary intake throughout your week. What are some great brain food snacks to choose instead of a chocolate bar or extra coffee? You want to go for snacks that provide long lasting energy to your brain without providing blood sugar spikes that initially pep you up, but then drop you back down. Nuts, seeds and their butters are wonderful – you can eat them alone or use the butters smeared on fruit wedges or vegetables. Homemade protein balls are wonderful as well, also legume based dips, boiled eggs or wholefood muffins and biscuits. BULIMBA

SPOTLIGHT ON:

BULIMBA Explore the Brisbane suburb boasting riverfront views, top end property and a bunch of foodie hot spots.

BELLE PROPERTY BULIMBA In a short period of time, Belle Property Bulimba has become the second highest performing agency in the 4171 postcode. In terms of relativity, their agents now out perform all competition, boasting quality over quantity, with four agents rather than 40. Tony O’Doherty and his team at Belle Property Bulimba highly regard culture within the business, believing you cannot have a healthy and happy working environment if you are forced to compete internally. From a market point of view, he believes clarity around who the local experts are is essential to success, making them less at risk of becoming a volume agency, which is against Belle Property’s core values. Tony enjoys working within the industry, due to the incredible people he meets on a daily basis and knowing that when his job is done successfully, it can have an immeasurable effect on the buyer and the seller. What really sets them apart from the rest is that they’re a service based agency. This means they don’t try to sell an unsuitable property to a buyer, because they will never pay a premium and the transaction will not be optimal. Instead, they always remain honest and take the time to match the highest and best buyer with the most suitable commodity. 2/171 OXFORD ST, BULIMBA P 0466 442 674 BELLEPROPERTY.COM/BULIMBA

STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson

A coffee a day keeps the doctor away

Custom content will always be King

Sneakers with a suit?

A number of studies have now confirmed that coffee has a number of health benefits, including the prevention of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes and liver disease, including liver cancer. Recent studies also suggest that coffee appears to make you smarter, improve cognitive function, and decrease the risk of depression. And it’s no surprise, as coffee is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. But it’s not all positive, as there are a few health risks associated with drinking coffee. Coffee lovers are encouraged to keep in mind their beverage choices, including size of cup, milk choice, and the necessity of adding cream, syrups and sugar, which of course add fat and calories. It’s important to remember that this can add up to hundreds of calories per cup in some cases. Try to seek out specialty coffee that’s naturally loaded with flavour and texture, minus the unnecessary calories.

Unfortunately, custom marketing content is not something that’s utilised by many companies. Often, businesses will repurpose existing material, whether this be through a re-share on social media, buying blog posts or hyperlinking to websites. Whilst this might seem like a quick and easy solution, it’s not going to get you anywhere; it’s 2019 and you really should be producing quality and unique content, completely personalised to you and your brand. Which is where we come in. Did you know that we are a full-service creative agency that can help you create personalised content. Whether that be a customised gift guide featuring your products, a blog post, bespoke social media content or a printed advertorial, we’re here to shine a light on your business, in the best way possible. Personalisation is no longer just a buzzword used in the marketing world, it’s imperative to the future success of your business. Call us, we can help.

While many may disagree, it is now considered stylish to wear sneakers with a suit. Like anything that’s not quite the norm, it has to be done with particular attention to detail. Firstly, pick the right occasion. Your white collar corporate job generally won’t accept sneakers. Consider a cocktail party or a Friday long lunch. When it comes to style, your Asics or other running shoes are not acceptable. Choose a dress sneaker that’s either Gucci, LV, Fendi, or Wil Valor. White is also a great colour to choose, as the idea behind wearing a sneaker is to make it stand out while complimenting the rest of the outfit. They must be clean to the point of almost spotless, and be worn with a tapered trouser or chino with a shorter hem, separate trouser and jacket combinations, or a solid white, baby blue, or white pink shirt. If you are fashion relevant, you will be seriously considering this style. If you have your doubts, maybe it’s time to evolve.

Luscious lashes Give your eyes a dramatic and voluminous look for longer, with a set of eyelash extensions from Brazilian Beauty. Wispy, dark, and perfectly curved lashes are something that every woman chases when wanting to create the perfect eye look. While multiple layers of mascara can help to achieve length and colour, it’s almost certain it will end up smudged, flaking, and faded after a few short hours. Eyelash extensions are the perfect replacement for mascara, and while once considered a luxury treatment reserved for A-list stars, it’s now more available than ever, with Brazilian Beauty offering $99 lash extensions throughout March and April. While they’re a great alternative to slathering on mascara every day, they need to be cared for appropriately to ensure longevity. There are a number of ways to help your lashes stay put for longer, as well as maintain

their shape, length, and texture for the duration of their wear. Firstly, it’s important to avoid water for the first 24 to 48 hours after application, to ensure the glue is completely dry and your lashes are going to stay in place. From then on, you need to make sure you’re fanning your lashes dry after hopping out of the shower or pool, or after a sweaty gym session to keep the glue set. Throughout their wear, try to avoid touching your lashes, or applying moisturizer or facial oil too close to the eye area. You can keep them in shape by combing them every morning to brush out any stray lashes and kinks, and apply lash extension sealant to keep them looking picture perfect for that little bit longer. Finally, try to avoid applying mascara to your

lash extensions, they’re beautiful on their own. Aim to have them refilled every two to three weeks so you’re never left with sparse areas or twisted lashes. BRAZILIAN BEAUTY 13/104 NEWMARKET RD, WINDSOR P 3357 4081 BRAZILIANBEAUTY.COM.AU

VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp

Going under the radar

How to break the pattern

Keeping your veins healthy

There are many ways to remain discrete about the personal choice to undergo plastic surgery and transition into the new you following your procedure. Choose your time wisely, so you can recover and recharge before returning to work. De-clutter your schedule and reduce your commitments. Consider the season, as the cooler months will allow you to layer clothing in order to hide your post-operative surgical garments. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and vitamins can help to reduce bruising and swelling after surgery, and improve how your wounds heal. In addition to this, ensure you use silicone gel to protect fresh scars, foundation with sun protection to eliminate damage, and high quality skin cleansers to help manage inflamed wounds. Any surgery or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified medical practitioner.

If we observe our own behaviour, we begin to notice the patterns in what we do. This could be the routine we do to get ready for work, how we solve our problems with the same approach, or how we react to challenges in the same way. However, not all of our patterns of behaviour are positive. Smoking, over eating, stress, anxiety, fear, and under performance can all be detrimental to our lives. Before developing new patterns of behaviour to improve your enjoyment of life, it’s important to break old patterns and interrupt the mind and body connection. For example, you may notice that you speak or hold your body a certain way when you “stress.” After identifying the pattern, try to change things up. Alter your posture, hold your arms by your side, or look up to the ceiling. Breaking a pattern is a powerful way to take control of how you feel.

As temperatures remain high throughout March, additional challenges can become present for those who suffer from venous disease. The heat can cause veins to dilate, which in turn can lead to increased discomfort and swelling. Other patients report sensitivity of the skin on their legs, including itchiness and dry skin. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is especially important to decrease the risk of vein swelling, as well as walking later on in the day to help relieve venous congestion. Swimming and aqua jogging are also great activities to help symptoms, as the ‘antigravity’ movements take the pressure off your legs, relieving symptoms such as aches and throbbing. Compression therapy is another option to help support your legs. While you may have some concerns wearing them in the heat, new materials allow the stockings to breathe better than those previously available.

Sleep healthy for your brain’s sake

Pop psych vs. self help

Gaining a better perspective

Experts are considering sleep as the third pillar of health, alongside diet and exercise. While some sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnoea have long been associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and impaired daytime function, there’s now accumulating evidence that poor sleep can be associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Dental practitioners are like the gate keepers of the airways, so are in a good position to screen patients for potential sleep disorders. They can play a vital role in the joint care of improving sleep quality through the use of oral appliances, jaw development orthodontics, and orofacial myofunctional therapy. The experienced team at James Street Dentists hold sleep health in high regard, with Dr Anne-Maree Cole completing her Masters Degree in Sleep Medicine. James St Dentists applies a whole body approach to dentistry.

Popular psychology started in the 1960s, and describes human endeavours purportedly based on psychology, finding credence among the populace. This pseudo-psychology is often promoted by authors, consultants and entertainers whose opinions are based on their experiences and biases. Sometimes, these people are perceived as being psychologists, not due to their credentials, but because they have projected that image in their work. They often make promises or guarantees, and have simplistic explanations of complex issues, with a focus on selling. Self-help columns, as well as books and programs, are a useful addition to professional services, as they have supporting evidence. So the next time you invest energy, time, or money into programs or people, ask about their qualifications, evidence, and expertise – you deserve quality.

We’re all guilty of staying so fixed on a thought that we fail to see other points of view. In the interest of helping you change your perspective and your relationship, try to remember the handy saying, “If I change my thought, my attitude changes, if I change my attitude, my behaviour changes, if my behaviour changes, my perspective changes.” An example might be the way your partner removes themselves from difficult conversations. If we challenge our thought regarding why they do that, we might find ourselves with kinder explanations. If you find they’re getting overwhelmed, try a soothing strategy or let them take a moment to collect their thoughts before responding. Our perspective now changes on their behaviour, therefore we are more prepared to listen to them. Challenge the thought and gain a better attitude, better behaviour and a kinder perspective. Your partner will thank you for it.

or me, there are a few buzzwords that come to mind when someone mentions Port Douglas – tropical, relaxation, serenity and nature to name a few. It’s casual yet sophisticated, lush and inviting, tranquil and relaxing – which makes it the perfect destination for a wedding, honeymoon, babymoon or romantic couples’ getaway. Or in my case, a three-day break from my crazy, chaotic everyday life!

We arrive at Cairns Airport and are whisked away to the beautiful Thala Beach Lodge for a tour of their picturesque eco and wildlife retreat. We’re treated to lunch at Osprey’s Restaurant, where we dine amongst the treetops, overlooking the magnificent 58-hectare reserve. It’s the perfect start to what’s sure to be an amazing weekend.

Top pick: an afternoon spent relaxing at the private-access beach, sipping on a fresh coconut. Next, we head into the heart of Port Douglas for the part of the weekend I’m most excited about. An afternoon spent sailing on the Great Barrier Reef. I’m a North Queensland girl, so I’ve been lucky enough to venture out to the reef on several occasions, but I must admit, my past experiences were nowhere near as special as this because Sailaway Port Douglas has really nailed their afternoon sunset cruise. Departing at 1pm, we ventured out to the Low Isles where we explored protected Coral Cay, snorkeled in crystal blue water and lounged underneath the coconut palms. I promise you, it was every bit as relaxing as it sounds. With salty beach hair and sun kissed skin, we check into the incredible Niramaya Villas MARCH 2019

& Spa, which will be our accommodation for the night. Immediately, I wonder if I’ve somehow been transported to Indonesia, because these villas are the very definition of tranquility. There are frangipani trees, soaring pavilions and lillipad dotted lakes and my private villa is almost as big as my apartment back home. I’m officially in heaven.

Hot tip: located just across the road from St Mary’s Chapel, Salsa’s is the perfect postceremony location for cocktails or a relaxed and intimate wedding reception.

Friday night concludes with dinner at Zinc Port Douglas, an extremely stylish (and popular) local restaurant that happens to host many wedding receptions and celebrations. Their menu is extensive and delicious and we feasted on fresh local seafood and expertly crafted cocktails.

It’s 3pm and we’re off to our accommodation for the night, which I’ve heard is an absolute showstopper. And oh my goodness, it did not disappoint. ReNewell is an Executive Retreats property and is located on Newell Beach. The house is unassuming from the outside, but when you step through the front doors, you’re greeted with the most magnificent open plan home filled with natural light and a beautiful sea-breeze. There’s a huge infinity pool where we spend the rest of the day lounging and looking out over our private beach with a glass of wine in hand. Later, we’re treated to a private dinner by Port Douglas Catering which now sits in one of my top five favourite meals of all time. I go to bed a very happy girl.

SATURDAY

Need to know: ReNewell is a very popular

Today is all about meeting local wedding vendors and exploring the beautiful town of Port Douglas. After checking out of our accommodation, we start the day by visiting St Mary’s by the Sea; a historic 1880 fully restored non-denominational church that literally overlooks the Coral Sea. It’s an icon of the town and with its high ceilings, huge glass altar window and stained-glass windows, it’s easy to see why it’s a popular venue for wedding ceremonies. Today’s lunch is at the iconic Salsa’s Bar & Grill which we learn is a local favourite. We feast on some many delicious dishes, but the standouts were easily the Barramundi spring rolls and the pulled pork piquillo poppers.

retreat for weddings and special events, but it’s one of Australia’s most sought-after holiday destinations, so book quickly.

Highly recommend: the villas at Niramaya are perfect for the loved-up couple. Honeymoon accommodation, sorted.

SUNDAY It’s our final day in paradise and whilst I’m devastated to be leaving, we have one final destination before we jet back to Brisbane and back to reality. We head up to The Daintree where we spend the morning zip-lining through the canopies and exploring the wonder of the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest in the world. It’s an incredible experience and the perfect way to finish three days in paradise. VISITPORTDOUGLASDAINTREE.COM

Daina Lindsay A Brissy wife and mum with a passion for probiotics, gut health, and living a healthy and full life. @daina.lindsay

Do you have any advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle? What’s your occupation? Founder/Director PONO Probiotics

Tell us a bit about PONO Probiotics PONO is an ancient Hawaiian term that means rightness, correctness, alignment, goodness, excellence and well-being. These are things that we hope for in life for ourselves, our families and also our health. PONO is a fun family friendly probiotic range that tastes delicious, in a format that is able to be incorporated into smoothies, cereal, yoghurt, puddings, bliss balls, or even taken straight off the spoon.

For me it’s really about living a healthy balanced lifestyle. I always follow the basics of eating my fruit and veg, drinking plenty of water, exercising and also getting enough sleep each night.

What’s your heritage? I was born in South Australia, as were my parents, however all my grandparents are Latvian.

Favourite restaurant in Brisbane?

Gut health! As they say, your gut is your body’s second brain.

On Sunday you’ll find me...

PONO Probiotics Lychee Iced Green Tea Tonic 500ml $35.95

At Milton Markets or Charlie’s Fruit Market picking up my fruit and vegetables for the week, then a quick trip to Bunnings to pick up something for the garden...

My all-time fav is Spice Den, and then heading to Mr Percival’s for a cocktail.

Instant pick-me-up

What does a day on a plate look like for you?

My morning smoothie.

I always start the day off with a smoothie to get me going, consisting of a shot of coffee, a frozen banana, a scoop of protein powder, a teaspoon of our Coconut Plus Probiotic Powder, Almond Milk, Cinnamon and Ice. For lunch, I have a salad with tuna, for an afternoon snack I have carrots or rice crackers with hummus, and for dinner, some kind of poke bowl or buddha bowl.
