or us, March is all about power play in many forms. Yes, it’s our Wellbeing issue, but it’s also an opportunity to highlight the femme force. Girl power has been stamped on every page of this issue. I mean, have you seen our cover? The partnership between Deena Lynch, Brisbane Street Arts Festival and Brisbane BMW is a force within itself. The innovation involved in this collab is energising and certainly drives our city down new avenues. With that, check out the women we have our eye on (and you should too) on page 30. Then, flick to page 41 to see the best of the best in Brisbane beauty – again, a collective of leading ladies changing the game. The term wellness and wellbeing seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue, but is it taking over all facets of our lives? WTF does it even mean? We went straight to the pros on this one to unpack the term on page 12. For me, wellbeing is an escape and immersing my senses is an experience and this is exactly what I did on a recent trip to Raffles, Phnom Penh, receiving the First Lady treatment (page 48). So, whether it’s business or play, be well and go get ‘em.

here are so many incredible women in this issue; I don’t even know where to start! From the inspiring Brisbane Lions Womens’ team (who may have recruited me to their next training session) to local business owners, artists and women in wellness, the highlight of this month has been speaking to each and every one of them to share the inspiring female achievement around Brisbane. We’re unstoppable! If you take anything from this issue, take empowerment; it’s clearly helping our city make major moves.

A
technicolour dream drive. This is the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and it’s got innovation and creativity written all over
it. Literally. With technological evolution and experience at the forefront, BMW’s fresh new wheels are a first-ever in many realms: technology, design, aesthetics and collaboration. Bright eyes look here because this adventure is driving into new territories. Teaming up with Brisbane Street Art Festival, Brisbane BMW – led by Dealer
Principal, Anthony Alafaci – saw the opportunity to provide a new platform. “We wanted to use the BMW brand to showcase the work of the incredibly talented artists and designers living here in Brisbane,” he says. Designed by multifaceted creative, Deena Lynch (Jaguar Jonze), the car wrap personifies the future of Brisbane BMW’s luxury mechanics through colour, creativity, innovation and exploration. “We wanted to work with a female artist on this project and Deena was the perfect fit as she embodies the BMW brand so well; she’s modern, edgy and super creative.” And, that’s just the outside, it’s the inside where the innovation shines. The driver-oriented cockpit exudes an ambience that is both exclusive and dynamic with illuminated interior trim finishes and sports seats. Now, meet your PA – the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is your go-to, offering advice and assistance on the road. Your voice is its command. Brisbane BMW’s collaboration with Deena and the Brisbane Street Art Festival is considered more of an immersion. It’s a double entendre; the bold features, forthcoming designs and aesthetics of the 2 Series, matched with the empowerment of Deena, is fitting with the timing of International Women’s Day. Each component of this sleek syndicate oozes boundary pushing and power play, and that’s just the beginning. “We see it evolving into something really special,” Anthony hints. Officially launching on Friday March 6, you’ll be able to get your hands on the 2 Series Gran Coupé wheel, with all of your aesthetics and personal designs considered. If Brisbane BMW’s signature blue is too electric for you, create your own interior aesthetic choosing from a range of colour palettes and interior customisations. Attractive from all aspects (including the price), Brisbane BMW is leading the pack to elevated experiences we’ve never seen on our city’s streets before. With Anthony at the wheel, your every day is about to be taken to vehicleworthy velocities. Take one for a spin to feel the difference yourself. defined Wellbeing: WELLNESS
promotion
The word ‘wellbeing’ is thrown around these days, but what does it actually mean? We asked these leading ladies in food, nutrition and health to define what wellness means to them.
JACQUI TOUMBAS Nutritionist and Owner of Miss Bliss Whole Foods Kitchen To me, wellness is a constant state of evolving. There is never a point of reaching the pinnacle of wellness. It is the process of being my best and managing my physical health, mental health, faith, fitness, happiness, stress reduction, and emotional balance. Wellness is important because it is the only way for me to evolve. My wellness affects every aspect of my life including work, creativity, and relationships.
TERESA CUTTER Founder and Director of The Healthy Chef Functional Food Range
LEE HOLMES
I truly believe that total wellness comes from within. What you eat, how you think, how you sleep, how you live as well as your lifestyle, will form the foundation to your wellbeing, and how your body feels. Wellness happens by making incremental changes that add up over time. Some of these changes can be small, like eating more vegetables, adopting a more plant-based wholefood diet or swapping coffee for matcha green tea. Other modifications may involve changing the way we think and taking a more positive approach to life. To me, wellness is the total balance of nutrition, movement, rest and mindfulness – the four pillars of health.
Wellness means feeling well and balanced in all facets of life, not just general health. I like to look at wellness holistically, because there’s no point being well in some areas and not in others. Generally speaking, wellness is also a way of looking at the world through a different lens and understanding that your health has its ups and downs and a balanced approach to wellness is an ongoing, lifelong practice. I am a big believer in the fact that food and love tie through every part of our lives, home and family, friends and community, career and passion, finances, health and longevity and spirituality. And, when we perceive a broader appreciation of food and its power, we can lighten up a little; connecting food with purpose and joy. I call these wellness principles my keystones for living a 'whole' life.

ike any woman with a likeness for the finer things in life, I was frustrated at the lack of second-hand designer handbags and accessories online, and so was inspired to start my own business in Brisbane buying and selling luxury pre-owned items. Before I founded Luxe.It.Fwd, I was a commercial lawyer for almost ten years. Whilst working full-time, I started my side hustle and would work on it in the early morning before work, during lunchtimes, nights and on weekends. I juggled crazy hours, but the hard work paid off when Luxe.It.Fwd had over 100% year-on-year growth. From this success, I was able to step away from my law career and focus on the business full-time. We now have a team of six behind us
making Luxe.It.Fwd what it is today. My aim has always been to bring accessibility to luxury, coupled with the same experience you would expect if buying new from the boutique. I think that some people might have been perplexed as to why I left a successful legal career to start an online fashion company when I had no prior experience, but I really felt I had an amazing opportunity. Being in business is the wildest of rollercoaster rides. In managing a growing business and having a very energetic two-year-old boy, my work-life balance is still a work in progress at times, however, on a perfect Brisbane weekend you’ll find me somewhere at Howard Smith Wharves with a wine in hand.

The Bare Road From the barefoot, sun-drenched heritage of Byron Bay.
T
he Bare Road is the ultimate basics lifestyle and resort wear brand, with a focus on quality, texture and long-lasting staples that translate seasonally. This month, the brand releases their autumn 2020 collection, Noon. We chatted to founders Katie and Ayla about the inspiration behind their brand. How was The Bare Road born? Katie: From a love for basics and easy-going staples with our lifestyle here in Byron Bay. Ayla and I were friends since primary school. Ayla finished school and studied fashion while I travelled, which inspired me to come home and start the fashion label. We started selling our designs locally in Byron. Tell us about the autumn 2020 collection… “Noon” is an honour to summer's seasonal transition and the shift in light as the days become cooler. Drawing inspiration from the gradient of light that comes with the transition from morning to noon, the collection is designed to make you feel comfortable, confident and effortlessly stylish. Favourite pieces from the collection? Katie: My favourite two piece from the Noon collection is the linen suit set (Adley coat and Nadia pant). It’s such a versatile outfit and I can’t wait to wear just the coat with some denim cut offs and sandals for a casual Byron look. I’m also going to live in the rib
cotton pieces. Ayla: I can’t wait for the hemp basics – these will be on high rotation in my wardrobe. What is 1% for the planet? 1% for the planet is an initiative that allows our business to give back, something we feel is a vital necessity in the fashion industry. We support the movement, Take 3 For The Sea as the ocean is a huge part of our lives here in Byron Bay. What’s something people wouldn’t know about the brand? Ayla: We are a very small team. We bring our kids to work with us and are always juggling the two. Katie: We are both getting very used to working with one hand and a baby on the hip at all times, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Our office is loud and always full of kids, babies and lots of love.
WE ARE INFLUENCED BY THE AUSTRALIAN OCEAN PARADISE WE CALL HOME.”
What is your biggest influence? We are influenced by the Australian ocean paradise we call home. The pace, climate and environment have inspired us to create a relaxed yet refined line of basics and resort wear. What does the future look like for TBR? We can’t wait for 2020. We feel like we have our mojo and know exactly who we are and what we want to produce and portray to the world. Sustainability is always at the forefront of our minds and we plan to explore more of this in 2020. THE BARE ROAD 1 PORTER ST, BYRON BAY THEBAREROAD.COM

How are you feeling about Brisbane Comedy Festival? I’m really excited. This feels like the show that’s closest to what my friends and I feel is really funny. I want to show everyone what I’m laughing and thinking about. Where does the name of your show, ‘My Neck, My Back’, stem from? There’s a story in my show that will make it very clear. Basically, there was a point when there was a song with those lyrics that was on the radio and it made a bunch of people, like me, who were in the car with their parents really uncomfortable. What’s the best heckle you’ve ever heard? One time someone told me my fly was open, which was actually really helpful. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

All stirred up Stanley Restaurant Executive Chef, Louis Tikaram, let us in on his sizzling secrets of the season.
When did you know food was going to be such a big part of your career? Definitely cooking with my Grandma in Fiji as a young child. I used to love sitting on the bench top watching her prepare roti, curries, fresh seafood and travelling to the markets with her to shop. Where has food taken you around the world? I have travelled the world two times over in search of different cuisines, cultures and flavours. I have worked as a private chef in South Hamptons, cooked at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada, run a restaurant in Los Angeles, three months discovering Mexico and 29 more countries in between Norway to Indonesia eating and exploring everything on offer. What can people expect to find at Stanley this season? Exciting exotic fruits from Suncoast produce on the dessert menu, some awesome local Noosa Scallops and some of the most tender squid caught from around Bundaberg. What’s your favourite aspect of Cantonese style cooking? I fell in love with Cantonese cooking as it’s the perfect cuisine to showcase the best produce in the world. We can find right here within a few hours of Brisbane, a subtle sauce or a quick stir fry is the perfect application to let the beauty of the produce shine. 24

What dishes are you looking forward to cooking the most over autumn/winter? Winter for me is soup, Congee and Dan Dan noodle weather so keep a look out for these on the menu soon. Where do you see the food scene in Brisbane heading over the next year? I have only lived in Brisbane for six months and the food scene is unfolding before my eyes. It is already fast becoming a food destination for Aussies to travel to and will definitely grab a lot of international attention soon. Where do you get your inspiration from in the kitchen? Honestly I get it from being outdoors, cycling, surfing and bushwalking! Clearing my head and letting my imagination flow is when I usually start to think about dishes, flavour combinations and produce. Being back in Australia, it is very difficult not to be inspired. The quality and flavour of the produce here is mind blowing, it truly is the best place to cook in the world. What ingredient can you not get enough of right now? Stockyard beef from the Darling Downs is some of the best beef I have ever tasted and to receive our meat direct from the farm is amazing. Sweet or spicy? Spicy.
What celebrity would you love to cook for? Patty Mills (Aussie NBA Player).
Thai Wi-Rat, Little Valley, Watany Manoushi, Glamorous Wok, sAme sAme and Little Smirk.
Best memory from Stanley so far? Bringing 30 chefs together who have never worked with one another and forming friendships that will last a lifetime.
Best kitchen hack? Oyster sauce! It is an umami bomb so don’t only use in Asian cooking! Add a few tablespoons to spaghetti bolognese sauce, stews and anything else that needs a pump up in flavour. You will thank me later.
What are some of your favourite places to eat in Brisbane? Gerard’s Bistro, Mirchh Masala, ARC, 1889 Enoteca,

WOMEN WATCH TO
Ladies first! From CEO’s to the creative types, we’re celebrating all the Brisbane movers and shakers.
LINSEY NORRIS Brisbane Lions GM of Marketing With a background in tourism, Linsey started with Brisbane Lions in 2013. Climbing the ranks in various roles, she worked on the original women’s team pitch and was recently promoted while on maternity leave. “The Brisbane Lions organisation is so supportive for a working mum; the hours and maternity policies – it’s a great place to work for a woman,” she says. “For women’s football, the change in society currently is massive, and for us to go out to schools and see stars in students’ eyes when they see our players is amazing – it could be them one day. There’s a way to go but we’re making amazing progress.”
ALLY ANDERSON Brisbane Lions AFLW player Ally is one of Brisbane Lions’ original players and life’s been nothing short of empowering since. “It’s definitely changed my life for the better. I get to travel and work with communities through Red Dust, a not-for-profit organisation in NT, where we deliver healthy living programs to students. I would have never been able to do this unless I was playing,” she says. These days, the young fans have female role models and knowing she’s contributing is humbling. This year she’ll be working on a Lions’ program called Inspire, running footy and education programs within a three-week program and she’s also excited for more women’s games to be held at The Gabba. 30

THE TEAM ARE IMPROVING EVERY GAME; THERE’S NO LIMIT TO WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE.” BREEANNA BROCK Brisbane Lions Women’s CEO Since 2016, Breeanna has been front and centre as Brisbane Lions’ first women’s team CEO – a far cry from her days as a tennis coach. When it comes to the AFLW, Breeanna says she feels blessed to have created something from nothing. “It’s been a privilege to be a part of history and shape this incredible team.” And, it transcends further than just the Lions, with the foundations of footy giving women everywhere an opportunity to trust each other. “Footy allows women to do things they haven’t experienced such as protecting each other, tackling and being aggressive – all without negative connotation,” she says. It’s no surprise women are coming in droves to the game due to the empowering opportunities.
PHOEBE PARSONS Podcaster, publicist and NOVA 106.9 radio host Once upon a time, there was a naive young girl who had the audacity to enter a Nova podcasting competition called ‘Podquest’, despite never having made a podcast before. By some insane stroke of luck, that naive young girl won the competition, ended up number six on iTunes and Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, is now 110 episodes and 11 seasons deep with Confessions of a Train Wreck. That naive young girl was Phoebe Parsons. “I didn’t choose the podcasting life; the podcasting life chose me. I’d actually started writing a book about what a train wreck my life was, and in a case of art imitating life, the USB I was writing it on snapped in half and I didn’t have the patience to write it all over again, so I took the lazy girls approach and spoke it instead. Turns out that USB snapping was the best thing that could have ever happened to me,” she says. Phoebe’s career goals are just like anyone else’s – to be on Dancing With The Stars (if any casting directors are reading this). Now as Nova 106.9’s most recent Sunday morning voice along with fellow hosts Shad and Tom, her best advice? Out grind, out hustle and out work everyone. @PHOEBEACP

ELISSIA CARNAVAS Director, Studio Pilates Coorparoo An injury that took her out of the Olympics could have been her downfall, but Elissia turned it into an opportunity to highlight her power to help. The former Australian athlete began Pilates as a rehab tool post-pregnancy and was so thrilled by the craft’s ability to regain personal strength, she was determined to share it.
LEANNE BRYANT Owner, Rinse & Repeat Luxury Laundry Leanne always knew life had big plans for her, but she didn’t know those plans involved luxury laundry. When her husband proposed the idea of starting their own laundromat, the laundry business’ grimy reputation didn’t have her thrilled until she realised she could revolutionise the industry all together. Her laundromat would be beautiful, fully serviced, completely cashless, have auto injected detergent and softener, offer dedicated animal garment machines, have a drive through facility for laundry services and dry cleaning plus a commercial arm with very
reputable clients. This is Rinse & Repeat. Since March 2019, Leanne has transformed a menial chore into an exceptional experience based on building genuine, long-term relationships with her clientele. Through her vision, doing laundry creates an opportunity for more ‘me time’ without compromising on quality and with an extra touch of extravagance. This year, Leanne will continue to defy the stigma of the traditional laundromat and commercial laundry experience by using the friendly determination her clients have come to expect as often as she hears, “This is the best laundry I’ve ever seen,” from within the walls of Rinse & Repeat. It’s about being able to instil confidence in them every day and encourage them on the road to their personal goals – that is my favourite part of the job,” she says.

ALISON HUTLEY Co-founder of Botanica Real Food Before motherhood, Alison spent five years at university desperately searching for a career she could dig her teeth into. Little did she know she would soon be battling such a male dominated industry. “I had always loved working in the hospitality industry, it just never occurred to me that I didn’t need a degree to be a success,” Alison says. When she started her apprenticeship, she was the only female working in the entire restaurant. “I put my head down and got to work, I made it so that if anyone was talking about me, it would be about my work ethic, standards and dedication,” she says. At the time she launched into the market, there was an incredible demand for the product but no one quite realised how to meet it. “Everyone wants to make healthier choices, but make those options delicious, time efficient and great value too, and you have created a product almost impossible to resist,” she says. With her seventh year of Botanica, Alison says it has been a patient pursuit with 2020 set to be a big year launching another site and continuing to bring beautiful fresh produce to the people of Brisbane.

Brow Game: Strong Meet the new brow treatment from Brazilian Beauty clinic. Need to up your brow game? Brow lamination is the latest brow treatment on the block, but what actually is it and is it our final solution to breathtaking brows? Beauty school drop-out or not, with the aesthetic and beauty industry elevating and introducing a plethora of new treatments, it can be bamboozling. And, thanks to the likes of Cara Delevingne, the industry’s sights have set on brow behaviour with striking shapes. Now, we may finally have found the answer to acing arches like never before; the final verse in the brow bible. Brow lamination will soon be offered at all Brazilian Beauty clinics and is the painless answer to brow precision which follows a similar pattern to lash lifts. If your brows aren’t up to par, nor sitting pretty in proportion,
the treatment promises to tame the two. Put down the pencil, because your brows will look ultra-symmetrical, thicker, fuller and allround flawless. Such perfection works like a perm, with the process involving straightening eyebrow hairs using a chemical solution to ensure each strand of hair is standing in formation. Followed by a wax and tint, brows are left looking bold with a natural arch, opening the eye. Taking just under an hour, the process is said to be relaxing and comfortable as well as painless. Brazilian Beauty suggests scheduling appointments five to six weeks apart for maintenance, depending on personal hair growth cycles and routines. Ageing well
A simple and inexpensive skin care regime is something everyone can achieve. Paired with a healthy lifestyle, the single most important way to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun, so use a quality SPF 50+ sunscreen product every day. If you smoke, consider quitting or reduce how much you smoke. Smoking makes your skin look aged and wrinkled. Our skin is generally robust but treat it gently. Reduce wash times and avoid hot water. Excessive washing with hot water removes natural oils and dries your skin. Gentle, soap-free cleansers used once or twice a day are best. After washing, apply a moisturiser that suits your skin type, preferably one containing broad spectrum sunscreen. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in refined sugars, carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats may promote younger-looking skin. Finally, maintain a healthy stable body weight, manage stress, sleep well, exercise regularly and moderate alcohol consumption. Your skin will be looking better in no time!
There is always an extensive sartorial list to conquer when organising your wedding. When it comes to the outfits, these are usually tasks assigned to each person. Luckily, we have a great timeline to-do list to consider leading up to your big day. Six months out: consider your design, colour and style options, the dress code of your wedding and how this relates to your suit, the formality of your partner’s dress/ attire and how this relates to your suit and, finally, is your wedding party easily fitted? Three months out: action selecting a tailor, choose fabrics and styles of shirts, suits and jackets, get measured and consider a tie and accessories. At this stage the tie may not be necessary as sometimes it is better to see your outfit on before you accessorise. One month out: it’s time for your final fitting of the suit, your finishing accessories and shoes. A week before: we recommend getting a great haircut and a final pressing of your chosen suit. You’re now ready to marry the love of your life, enjoy the day.
Healthy and happy is how we want to age, but what makes a difference in enabling us to live longer and be happier? An environment that’s safe, quiet, and connected to nature, as well as having access to services is a great foundation for a good life. This includes the home, garden, street, and community. Your job needs to be challenging, be close to home, pays at least an average wage (enough to save for retirement), and is good enough to be at for 40 hours per week. It really helps if your job has meaning and plays to your strengths. A yearly vacation is useful for recovery too. Socialise with friends who have a good sense of humor, share your ups and downs, stay positive, and nurture your romantic relationship. Having effective interpersonal skills in all contexts is critical. Moving regularly is imperative; include walking, gardening, and chores. Have a diet that has a plant-slant and avoid over-eating. Keep well-hydrated and consume alcohol moderately. Also, get eight hours of sleep and practice regular stress-busting strategies.

Wedding ready skin
Wedding ready smile
Period veins
There’s no doubt a wedding is one of the most exciting times in every girl’s life. But long after the dress has been packed away, the decision to have your skin wedding ready will remain. Having your skin managed by a professional is vital and the results will continue long term. Polished skin, this means make-up application is flawless, photos will be stunning and it’s a decision no bride has ever regretted. The query most brides-to-be ask is how far out they should start. If there are concerns such as pigmentation or congestion, six months prior to the wedding is a must. These concerns do take longer, however, with specialised treatments the outcome and effort is incredible. For brides who don’t have as many concerns but still want a glowing canvas, there are many options such as Radio Frequency, Collagen Induction, LED Light Therapy and skin resurfacing at three months out minimum. These results will live on long after your fairy-tale.
When it comes to having an attractive smile for your wedding, there’s more to it than just having white teeth. We tend to assume that pearly whites mean that they’re healthy, and while they might not have any visible signs of tooth decay, some areas are hidden from the eye. For example, all teeth need healthy gums for support. Gums should be light pink in colour and not red, puffy, swollen or bleeding. Healthy gums fit snugly around the crown of the teeth and if you suffer from gum recession (where the tooth root is exposed) this can change the appearance of teeth and make them look too long. The position of the top teeth in relation to the bottom teeth is also important. Do teeth look ‘bucky’ or is there an underbite? The effects of misalignment can include eating and chewing difficulties, headaches, tooth decay, chronic mouth breathing, speech issues and halitosis (bad breath). Regular check-ups are paramount for healthy teeth and with professional dental care you can have a smile that is truly healthy.
Although it is widely understood that varicose veins can be hormonal, research has been fairly limited, with just a few international studies undertaken in the last two decades. However, the data demonstrates a change in the diameter of the Great Saphenous Vein (a long superficial vein that runs the length of the leg) at different times of the menstruation cycle. About 7-10 days prior to menstruation, the production of progesterone increases. This surge loosens the vein’s walls to carry more blood. However, valves in the leg veins that transport blood back to the heart may strain from this excess blood flow, thus causing varicose veins to form or worsen. Once the progesterone decreases, the vein diameter reduces and with this the symptoms can disappear. Women who observe that their varicose veins become more bothersome with their period may want to consider wearing compression wear during their premenstrual stage to support venous sufficiency.

Post Valentine’s Day blues
Breast reduction
According to IBISWorld, Australians will spend around $1.09 billion on V-Day gifts, but these expectations are straining relationships. Social media has raised the bar too high, and this is having detrimental effects for long term couples as the day can bring up buried resentments building up from the holiday period. Ignoring the buzz is impossible and can cause lot of pressure on individuals and their relationships. When it doesn’t live up to expectations, February 14 can be the catalyst for a split. To avoid this, ditch expectations around the Hallmark holiday and get back to basics. Valentine’s Day can easily highlight the lack of romance in a relationship, so instead of celebrating your relationship on one allocated day, make time once or twice a month to just be together. Seeking help may feel like admitting defeat, but it’s the opposite – it means you both recognise something worth fighting for and that’s more romantic than any card or flower arrangement.
When people hear the words, ‘breast’ and ‘plastic surgery,’ they are quick to assume that this means an augmentation. However, this is not always the case. Breast reduction operations are becoming more and more a part of a plastic surgeon’s day. Augmentation (making breasts larger) is still popular but requests for reduction surgery are becoming equally as common, and this is due to the fact that the operation has functional outcomes that can be beneficial. Macromastia (large breasts) is often associated with neck and shoulder pain, bra strap shoulder indentation and skin rashes. An inability to effectively exercise is described too. Patients and the medical literature report post-operative improvements in these functional concerns. If these symptoms are affecting you and your everyday life, perhaps breast reduction could assist. All surgery carries risks. Before proceeding you should obtain a second opinion from a suitably qualified surgeon.

Dermal rollers seem to be rolling out all across the beauty world, but what’s the hype? This month, Deputy Editor Fiona Williams went rolling in the deep with Australian Skin Institute’s Dermal Roller device. Being able to bring advanced skin treatments home seemed too good to be true and yet with my new go-to gadget, I saw results immediately. I had never used one before, but reaping the benefits was easy. All it takes is asterisk motions on the skin over your whole face for the diamond tip needles to create channels in the skin, stimulating collagen production. You only need to treat yourself two to three times a week and I highly suggest doing it at night with a soothing serum (I opt for the ASI Pure Hydration Concentrate) as skin can become a little red. Surprisingly gentle but giving me noticeable results, I’ve had zero breakouts since starting the treatment combo – just smooth, beautiful skin. AUSTRALIANSKININSTITUTE.COM.AU @ASI_SKINCARE

hat do Jacqueline Kennedy and I have in common? Sadly, nothing. However, the transcendent style icon has always fascinated me and for a sweet moment in time, I could envisage what it might have been like to be Jackie when she visited Cambodia in 1967 at the invitation of the King. Our presidential treatment starts with the airport transfer. Travelling along the wide avenues of Phnom Penh in our chauffeured BMW, a Raffles flag flutters on the hood and, for a brief flicker, I imagine that we’re part of a VIP motorcade. We should feel special, as we are en route to Raffles Hotel Le Royal. Yes, THE Raffles – the luxury hotel brand synonymous with unparalleled service, the well-travelled and an era of luminous movie stars, famous writers, royals and heads of state. Pulling into the circular driveway of Raffles Hotel Le Royal, its grand French colonial facade is breathtaking. Shuttered windows, breezy verandas and a red carpet lead up to the impressive entry. moment. The exquisite lobby is an intoxicating blend of Khmer, Art Deco and French colonial style with dark timber decor, a stunning chandelier and exotic orchids overflowing from vases. We are introduced to our personal butler. The butler thing is not really our scene (hubby is squirming at the concept), however it is very much a part of Raffle’s exceptional service as we are led to our room for the next two nights – the Charles de Gaulle suite. It is one of several ‘personality’ suites and is a gorgeous room featuring a four-post bed, elegant decor and tastefully integrated mod cons. There’s no balcony on this one, which I would recommend for those romantic balmy evenings. The hotel has arranged a tour of the property – for anyone who appreciates history, it’s a must. From its beginnings in 1929, Raffles Le Royal has been a part of Phnom Penh’s history for the past 91 years and it is one hell of a history. I spent flight time listening to podcasts about Cambodia, gleaning an insight into its rich and tragic past. in the city centre, it’s a major player in today’s business and social scene. The hotel is wrapped around a central courtyard, which features PHNOM PENH SLING two stunning pools lined with established trees and sun lounges. Pool boys (their words, not mine) are on hand to take drink and food orders. Mental note: make time for lunch and an ice-cold G&T poolside – we did this the day of our departure. But it’s The Elephant Bar that captures my imagination. The decor is both timeless and romantic, adorned with whimsical paintings of elephants, each of particular significance. It’s no wonder
that locals and visitors alike flock to the bar for its elegant yet relaxed ambience, and I can imagine Rudyard Kipling whiling away the time, seeking inspiration over a Gin Sling or two. This is a truly beautiful place to enjoy happy hour, pre-dinner drinks or a late-night tipple – it’s my favourite place in the hotel. The cocktail list is impressive and so enthralled with the former First Lady, the hotel created an honorary cocktail for her - The Femme Fatale with crème de fraise des bois, cognac and sparkling wine. PippaHannon Embodying the quintessential Australian summer style, we meet the woman behind Palm Noosa – personifying the good life through dreamy, feminine, contemporary and carefree pieces. @PAL M.NOOSA PAL MNOOS A.COM.AU
Have you always been in fashion? How did you get into it? One sentence to introduce yourself? A secret romantic and very determined person with a salted caramel cookie obsession.
Describe Palm Noosa in three words… Fun, feminine and timeless.
What was the inspiration behind the brand? To create unique pieces that make you feel special when you’re wearing them, whether that be at the grocery store, to lunch with the girls or to a wedding!
How did you develop your creative style? For me, each collection starts simply with the notion of “What do I want to wear?”, then I go back, lay all the designs out, think of all the important women in my life with all of their unique lifestyles and body shapes and make sure there is a piece for everyone.
From a young age I’d beg Mum to buy me Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. When I was 13 I begged my mum for a sewing machine for my birthday, and most afternoons were spent at Spotlight. Fashion is always something that has made me feel good. There is nothing better than finding a piece and it being love at first sight.
Favourite piece from your current collection? The Grove Street Dress for a special occasion and The Horseshoe Bay Dress for everyday wear.
Who is your style icon? Gwyneth Paltrow, Anna Dello Russo and my mum.
What celebrity would you love to see wearing Palm pieces? Margot Robbie.
Signature scent? Chanel Paris-Deauville. Chanel Paris-Deauville Eau de Toilette Spray 125ml $115 David Jones
Can’t stop watching/ listening to/reading? I’m a creature of habit and very nostalgic, which means I’m constantly watching my favourite shows on repeat. My go-to’s will always be Friends and The Office. I’ve also been playing The Handmaid’s Tale soundtrack on repeat.
Last place you travelled to? India – to finalise our upcoming fourth collection!
It’s a perfect Sunday afternoon, where are you? On a boat with my friends and family eating prawns and oysters with an Aperol spritz in hand or getting take away truffle pizza from our local, 250 Grammi.
Can’t live without beauty products? Pawpaw cream, Bobbi Brown hydrating face cream and Issada mineral foundation.
What’s in store for Palm Noosa in 2020? We’re in the middle of production right now for our 2020 autumn/winter collection and in the early stages of design for next summer’s range.
