Modern CHARACTER We spoke to the creative minds behind The Design Duo, Alisa and Lysandra, about their top styling tips from their latest project – the Albert Park terrace home.
Bed linen
Y
our bed will always be the focal point of the master bedroom, so choose textures, tones and colours that bring out your bedrooms’ design theme. Bed linen is a great way to introduce textures and layering to your bedroom, so don’t be afraid to try different sizes and shapes to create heights with your pillows. Alternatively, you can use different materials from natural French linen, to luxurious velvet to add some desirable ‘oomph’!

Soften your bathroom
W
ith so much glass and so many tiles in one space, a bathroom can often come off as quite cold, or even clinical. By adding some aesthetic touches such as indoor plants, and some timber grain as an option for a shelf or vanity top, the entire space can be softened with some added warmth.
All in the details Take some time researching the latest in bathroom design, as the small features can often make the biggest impact. An example of this is shower drains! Previously thought of as a simple hole in the middle of the shower area, nowadays we have access to a wide range of floor grates that give a modern twist.
8.
INSPI R E D L I V I NG
Maximise storage space Make as much use of the available space in your kitchen as possible! Efficient storage will reduce clutter and mess, allowing for an easy-to-use space. Where possible, use overhead cabinets to store the items that you might not need everyday, which still need a home. Consider using deep drawers to store cooking pots and crockery as this can often be a more functional way to store items.
Your personal gallery Long hallways are essentially your own personal gallery and are just screaming out for beautiful artwork to adorn their walls, and if permitting, a full size mirror. We love a combination of family and personal photos as well as a beautiful piece of art that says something about the people that live in the home, whether it be colours, or a landscape piece depicting your favourite holiday destination. Let your hallway tell the story of your home and set the tone for what’s to come. alisaandlysandra.com.au FB /AlisaLysandra /alivebodyau IG @alisa_lysandra @al.ive_body Photography: LISA COHEN

READY, SET, RENOVATE! 12 reno tips from Three Birds Renovations by Bonnie Hindmarsh, Lana Taylor and Erin Cayless

4.
Create a vision board – this is crucial to nailing the style of your renovation and keeping on track throughout the renovation process. We teach budding renovators exactly how to do this in our six-week online course, The Reno School. We also get our inspiration from Instagram, Pinterest, holidays we’ve been on and hotels we love, the list goes on.
Confirm your budget – you’ll need to have a good handle on your budget right from the start. There’s no point engaging with trades before you have some idea of the budget you have to work with. They’ll be able to help you with quotes to make it more accurate.
10.
INSPI R ED L I V I NG
Don’t skimp on planning – renovations can be daunting, but with enough planning and ensuring you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, it can be really enjoyable. You only get one chance to get it right so nailing the layout and considering if you want areas like a built-in outdoor BBQ , is essential in the planning stage. No house is un-flippable – believe it or not, you can turn any house around – sometimes the more dilapidated the better. We know from experience – the first renovation the Three Birds ever did was a hoarder’s hovel; the garden was so overgrown you could barely see the house and the neighbour swore the same bed sheet had been hanging on the Hills Hoist for over 10 years! As long as everything’s structurally sound, it’ll stand up to rehab.

5.
Invest in quality appliances – there’s no two ways about it. Tapware, sinks, and appliances are an investment in your home that will instantly enhance the look and feel. Always do your research, particularly with appliances, to make sure they meet the needs of your family. Our go-to for appliances for House 13 was Electrolux. There’s nothing worse than a dishwasher or washing machine that’s too small for your family’s needs!
6.
The secret to a pristine kitchen lies in a little help behind the scenes – if you have the space, adding a butler’s pantry can be handy to prepare food without messing up your main kitchen and for storage of appliances and larger items like platters that might clutter your main kitchen. You could go all out, like Bonnie, and include an extra oven and fridge in there, which might be handy for a large family.
7.
Putting money into a kitchen will always pay off – if you can only afford to renovate one room, make it your kitchen. Create window and door openings that connect the kitchen with the outdoors and upgrade the bench tops with engineered stone.
8.
Consider your non-negotiables – storage is always a biggie. You can never have enough storage, so think creatively about how to add more. For example, dead spaces, like along the side of an island bench where the stools go, is a great place for cupboards for things that don’t get used regularly. We especially love the Electrolux 501L Stainless Steel Refrigerator because it lets you customise the storage spaces for bulky or small items. W IN T E R 2 1
11.
Think about the purpose of your home, not just the look – the main objective of creating a vision board is to capture not only how you want your family home to look, but also how you want your family to feel in the home. The layout, functionality, etc. all have a massive impact on family life.
11.
Avoid fads and short-lived trends – we prefer to keep our bold design choices to features that can be changed over time, like paint and furnishings.
9.
Identify the focal point of a room – it can be a structural element, like a picture window or fireplace, or a piece of statement furniture or artwork. Once you’ve determined that, build the rest of the room around it, starting with big-ticket items like large furniture pieces. Without homewares, trinkets, books, and candles, a room can end up looking more like a hotel than a home. But it’s best to leave these items until last, after all the major furniture and soft furnishings are in place.
12.
INSPI R ED L I V I NG
10.
There is such a thing as too much open space – Australians love openplan living. But we learned the hard way that there is such a thing as too open-plan. One of our renovations saw us having to add walls back in between exchange and settlement because buyers were concerned about noise travelling between the two open living areas. It was like residential reverse psychology – the exact thing we thought made the house more liveable had, in fact, done exactly the opposite. Not a mistake you make twice!

HOW TO CURATE CURB APPEAL by Katrina Chambers
T
here are many ways to jazz up your front entry (painting your front door pink like mine, for example!). But a simple way to increase your curb appeal that you can do right now, is grab some large pots plus a hardy outdoor plant or two, and place them by your entryway. They will instantly transform the space and create a welcoming feel for yourself and your guests. This was a no-brainer styling idea when we were on The Block.

LILLY PILLY
or a topiary of any kind will be hardy and green all year round
CITRUS TREES
always look excellent and kumquat trees bring good wealth I am told!
STYLE
a formal entry by placing a pot either side of your door. For a casual look, place a group of pots on one side
FERNS
in planter boxes are great if you want something low either side of your door
A FIDDLE LEAF FIG
in a geometric pot looks striking (though, I’d personally be very careful with a fiddle outside being exposed to the elements – a faux fig might work better if you want that look)
LAVENDER
or Petunias work well for that pop of vibrant colour
SUCCULENTS
in bowls and stands grouped together are super low-maintenance

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Our desire to feel calm and relaxed in our home is understandable. It’s also practical to include softer edges in our homes, especially for those with little ones. Which is why we’re loving the resurgence of curved interiors – the 60s home trend making a contemporary comeback in 2021.

eef Wellington is possibly the ultimate indulgence when it comes to a main dish and the perfect recipe to ‘wow’ your guests at your next dinner party. The decadence comes from the ingredients and process where a centre cut tenderloin of beef is coated in mustard and a mushroom duxelles, which is then wrapped in prosciutto, a chive crêpe and then finally covered with puff pastry and baked. Long story, it’s absolutely delicious! Try it for your next special occasion – perhaps a Christmas in July?

INSPI R ED L I V I NG
METHOD 1. Start by making your mushroom
9. Time to assemble your Beef Wellington!
duxelles. Peel your onions and garlic and place into a food processor to chop into fine pieces. Heat a large pan with oil and once hot, add in your onions and garlic and stir on medium heat for five minutes until soft and translucent.
Place two of the crêpes down onto a chopping board overlapping each other so you have a rough rectangle crêpe surface. The length of the crêpes needs to be long enough to wrap entirely around the Beef Wellington. Now place down 5-6 slices of prosciutto down onto the base of the crêpe, carefully overlapping each other.
2. Whilst the onions and garlic are
softening, add your mushrooms into the food processor and chop into fine pieces. Tip the mushrooms into the pan, add the thyme and stir to combine. Add the brandy/whisky and continue to cook for five minutes on medium. The mushrooms will absorb all the liquid, shrink and then release the moisture back into the pan during the cooking process. 3. Continue to cook on medium-low to
evaporate as much moisture as possible. Transfer to a bowl and allow to cool down. Refrigerate if you don’t plan to assemble this the same day.
Jessica Nguyen’s Beef Wellington Serves 6 Ingredients 16 Cooking time 3 hours Skill level Medium to difficult
INGREDIENTS
1kg centre cut tenderloin (chateaubriand) of beef 4 tbsp of Dijon mustard 6 slices of prosciutto 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, defrosted 2 egg yolks 1 tbsp of flaky salt
MUSHROOM DUXELLES 500g of white mushrooms 2 small brown onions 1 small bunch of thyme 2 tbsp of brandy or whisky 5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 tbsp of butter
CHIVE CRÊPE
4 tbsp of all purpose plain flour 150ml of milk 1 egg A pinch of salt 2 tsp worth of chives, finely chopped 1 tbsp of butter
4. Now it’s time to sear your beef. Season
the tenderloin with salt and pepper all over and place a large pan on high heat with a tablespoon of oil. The pan needs to be super hot so allow the pan to start smoking before placing the beef in the pan to sear. 5. Sear every side of the beef including the
ends for 1-2 minutes maximum. You want as much char and caramelisation on the outside but not really cooking the meat inside at all, as this will be cooked in the oven during the baking process. 6. Remove from the pan and transfer to a
tray. Immediately spread the Dijon mustard all over the beef whilst it is still hot. This prevents the meat from drying out and allows it to absorb the flavour of the mustard into the meat. Allow to cool, cover and refrigerate if you are not planning to assemble that same day. You can do this up to two days in advance of serving. 7. Now make your crêpe. Add all
ingredients into a bowl and whisk to combine until smooth. 8. Preheat a large pan with a teaspoon of
butter and once melted, pour in one ladle of the crêpe batter, just enough to coat the surface of the pan. Cook on medium for 1-2 minutes before flipping and cooking for another minute before placing onto a plate to cool. The first crêpe never works, so now cook a further two crêpes that you will actually use to roll the beef. Allow to cool, cover and refrigerate if you are making this in advance.
10. Then carefully and evenly spread the
mushroom duxelles all over the prosciutto, making sure there is enough to evenly coat the beef when rolled. 11. Now place your beef along the base of
the mushroom duxelles and gently begin to roll the beef into a ‘burrito’ so that the crêpe, prosciutto and mushrooms are completely covering the beef. 12. Then cover with cling wrap with enough
excess wrap on the sides to twist and seal off the ends. Place into the fridge to chill for one hour. 13. Now roll your puff pastry onto your
bench top and brush the top with some egg wash (two egg yolks mixed with a dash of water). This will help your beef stick to the pastry. Then slowly roll the pastry around the beef until the edges meet. Cut off any excess pastry on the sides and then using your fingers, pinch close the ends of the pastry, making sure the beef is fully encased in the pastry and there are no holes. 14. Brush the entire surface of the pastry
with the same egg wash from before. 15. You could now place this into the oven
to cook or you can alternatively score the pastry or add a lattice over the top to make it look like a spectacle! 16. If so, take another sheet of pastry, large
enough to cover the exposed surface of the Beef Wellington and using a sharp knife cut vertical slits/dashes down the pastry to create a lattice effect. 17. Carefully drape the lattice over the
current pastry and spread it evenly, cutting off any overhang on the sides. 18. Finally, gently brush the lattice and
pastry again with the same egg wash. Sprinkle a generous amount of flaky salt over the top of the pastry. 19. Bake in the oven at 220 degrees
Celsius for 45 minutes or until the pastry is nice and golden brown. 20. Remove from the oven and allow to rest
for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

How to pick the perfect
WHITE PAINT
Power couple Zac and Roìsìn of ‘Geebungalow’, are currently renovating their post-war home in sunny Queensland, and know a thing or two about choosing the perfect white paint to suit any room.
Home: @GEEBUNGALOW | ZAC AND ROÌSÌN Photography: MORGAN KELLY

INSPI R ED L I V I NG
W
e’re Roìsìn and Zac and we have been renovating our home for the past three years! We both work in full time corporate jobs with no trade experience but we will always give anything a try. Our weekends are filled with endless trips to Bunnings, lots of painting and usually a margarita or two after a day working on the house!
What is your process for choosing the perfect white paint?
The colour palette in our home is bright but warm, so for us, we were looking for a very neutral white. We didn’t want it to throw any cool blue or grey undertones and we didn’t want it to be too warm so that it looked yellow. The key to finding the right white for your space is first understanding if you want a cool or warm look and then testing a lot of samples in a few different spaces in the house! Your paint will look different depending on the natural light in the space and the time of day. Our other tip is testing your sample up against your ceiling white. Often a colour will look a certain way in a sample
and then once you have it up against your ceiling white it starts to throw undertones you didn’t see before.
How do you like to inject colour into the home after creating a beautiful blank canvas? When you’re creating a neutral colour palette like our house you need to look at texture as much as colours. Although we have a lot of white, cream, and timber tones we make sure to mix up fabrics and finishes to add interest and depth to a space. We also like to inject colour through artwork and soft furnishings like bedding! A blank canvas means the options for colour combinations are endless.
What’s the biggest mistake someone can make when choosing white paint?
Thinking all whites are the same! They are so different and make such a big impact to the look and feel of your home. Be sure to have an idea of the kind of style you’re going for in your home before selecting something as important as paint as this will help you choose what kind of undertone you are going for!

“There are so many rules in the interiors space that are allowed to be broken, so mix-and-match! It’ll bring visual interest to your wall and bring personality to your collection.”
When designing a room would you start with furniture and choose art to complement, or vice-versa?
It’s best to design your room around your furniture first. Spatial planning is key when assembling your home. That’s not to say art doesn’t sometimes dictate your choices in furniture. Colour palettes and mood can be influenced from a key piece, just be mindful of the end product.
How did you select the art for your home and does it hold significance for you? When I moved into my home, I
had always dreamed of owning a ‘George Byrne’ style artwork. I was really drawn to his minimal, colour blocked compositions of LA but never thought there would be the opportunity to afford one of his pieces. I ended up at an exhibition of his and had a chat with the man himself, got utterly convinced to buy one and with fantastic programmes such as Art Money set up, I was able to pay off the artwork incrementally. Byrne’s artwork now sits proudly on my wall.
Everyone has a unique interior style. What kind of art would you recommend looking for if you have the following taste:
Maximalist: op shops are best to find those one-of-a-kind, unique and quirky pieces. Coastal: steer clear of the obvious shells and sketches of coral. Try something atmospheric with shots of stormy seas and landscapes. Scandinavian: it’s all about simplicity and colour palette. Black and whites make for a simple yet impactful impression. Contemporary: abstract art can be very subjective but try and find the right pieces that suit your taste. Dark, bold colours really give a modern, moody aesthetic when done right.
Does size matter? When it comes to
art, it all depends on where you’re hanging it. Large artworks can make a great impact in the home, but you don’t want them to overwhelm a space. Small pieces are great accents but can look lonely on a wall by themselves. It’s a case-by-case situation but most of all, trust your judgement and go with what makes you feel inspired in your home.
Canvas or frame? Mix-and-match! There are so many rules in the interiors space that are allowed to be broken. Try different timber frames, a mix of tones, whites, blacks or a
mix of framed prints with canvases. It’ll bring visual interest to your wall and bring personality to your collection.
Are there any rules around where to hang the art? E.g. Space from ceiling – does it matter? I say throw all the rules
out the window. I’m currently putting together a gallery wall in my home and I’m approaching it perhaps a bit more haphazardly than desired, one artwork at a time. It can take a while to acquire a full collection, so I’m slowly adding one piece at a time, drilling them into my wall as I see fit. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to hanging art.
What are some out-of-the-box ways to introduce art into your home? One
thing I’m loving introducing to my home at the moment is sculptural pieces. Vases and objects that take on the form of sculpture are a great way to introduce three-dimensionality to your collection. Clay Canoe is an Australian ceramics team that are making the most stunning sculptural vases, one of these in your home will become a standout focal point for sure!
What home trends are you loving in 2021 and do you have any predictions? Whilst trends come and go,
there’s definitely an emergence in smaller scale artworks. People are loving to style art in unexpected areas of the home, the kitchen, the laundry, even the bathroom! Smaller scale canvases are easy to move and change when it comes to styling so keep an eye out for some cute vintage finds or little postcards you can frame. Think small! I recently released a range of smaller scale artworks. All of them are limited edition prints, fully framed and easy to stand on their own or hang with sticky hooks. Check them out at palettebyjonofleming.com
Style your bedroom like a

A footboard is a simple way to add another layer to your room and enhance the aesthetic of your bed
Ever wanted to know how interior designers style a bedroom to look plush, layered and inviting? There are a few tricks of the trade, like including a large rug and various textures for an added layer of comfort.
