It was an absolute thrill shooting our March cover with Brisbane Racing Club this month – I can finally tick getting a horse and float down to Howard Smith Wharves off my list of things to achieve this year! Cover model, Ghost, absolutely rocked it in the hands of fellow model and jockey, Steph Thornton, who made each iconic part of Brissy a seriously cool statement. How cool does jockey Steph Thornton (aka the best smile in racing) look on our Brisbane Racing Club cover with Ghost? The team hustled all around town shooting at BNE’s most iconic locations to bring this one to life – even getting Ghost down to Howard Smith Wharves!

We’re also super excited to introduce the wickedly talented Jordan Kahu, who captured the essence of our covershoot so beautifully on video. He’s truly a gifted storyteller and we’re stoked to be working with him. Another exciting launch this month was the opening of Gucci in QueensPlaza, where our team rubbed shoulders with former cover model Deena Lynch, The Veronicas, Mimi Elashiry, Kerrie Hess, and other VIPs. I

’ve always had a passion for construction. It’s not just the buildings that interest me, but the design process as well as the management of projects. When I was younger, luxury building was a dream of mine, so I started my apprenticeship in carpentry and it was a clear progression path from there (with a lot of hard work in between). My roots started in Auchenflower and I spent my childhood growing up in beautiful Brookfield – Brisbane has always been home to me. It’s no surprise that Paddington is my favourite suburb, with its rolling greenery and picturesque feel, plus views for days over the city and beyond. Many people ask me which area will be the next to make a statement in development and I believe Bardon will have its time to shine soon. It hasn’t taken off yet and geographically it has a lot to offer, so it’s a real upand-coming area.

ARCOS VILLA

A typical day at Graya is very front end – we’re always working three to 12 months ahead so we are always busy planning away. When it comes to the most memorable moment I’ve had so far at Graya, it would hands-down be finishing my dream home, Arcos (pictured), and starting construction at our new project, Maison. Because I’m always thinking ahead, a beachfront development on the Gold Coast would definitely be a bucket list project. I am a self-confessed people pleaser, and I find one of the toughest parts of the job is keeping everyone happy – especially neighbours during busy construction work!

On the weekends you’ll find me at either SK Steak & Oyster or Hellenika having drinks with work colleagues, in Paddington having brekky at Kettle & Tin, and spending Sundays at New Farm Park. This year I’m looking forward to completing Maison and amongst that, maybe even starting a family!

here are few simple pleasures in life better than stepping outside to get some fresh air, and while the notion that spending time outdoors is good for your health is nothing new, its importance has certainly been highlighted more than ever, especially during lockdown periods.

To step outside for daily exercise, to walk to local parks with your children, to potter and prune the garden, and listen to birds chirping, these were all things that we previously took for granted but have become some of the more cherished experiences and thrills of late. So, given our newfound lust for nature, it comes as no surprise that 2021’s biggest health craze is ‘human rewilding’ – the act of immersing yourself in nature and reaping its health benefits.

In the field of nature conservancy, the term is used to describe the process of allowing land to return to its natural state to restore and rebalance its ecosystems. But, in recent times, rewilding has made its way into the human health sphere, too. Such is the power of nature

in fact, that researchers from the University of East Anglia in the UK gathered evidence from 140 studies of more than 290 million people from 20 countries, including Australia, and concluded that time spent in the fresh air close to nature had far-reaching benefits beyond making us feel happy and relaxed. “We found that spending time in, or living close to, natural green spaces is associated with diverse and significant health benefits,” says lead author of the study Caoimhe Twohig-Bennett, from the UAE’s Norwich Medical School. “Until now, the impact on our long-term wellbeing hasn’t been fully understood.”

Rewilding has been proven to lower your heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety, and increase feelings of wellbeing, improved immune function, and lower risk of cardiovascular disease. How wild is that?!

“People living closer to nature also had reduced risk of type II diabetes, premature death and preterm birth, and increased sleep durations. We found that exposure to greenspace significantly reduced people’s levels of salivary MARCH 2021

cortisol – a physiological marker of stress.”

You know that moment after you come up from a dive under a wave in the ocean, or how watching the sky turn shades of pink, orange and yellow as the sun sets can sometimes feel overwhelming?

It’s the perfect antidote to digital fatigue and artificial lighting we expose ourselves to endlessly on a daily basis.

our years on from her departure from Sass & Bide alongside co-founder and close friend Heidi Middleton, Sarah-Jane Clarke waded back into the fashion industry in 2018 with a debut collection under her own name.

However, rather than bombarding us with a wash of new product season after season, the eponymous label is a new chapter for Clarke, who has built a brand that mimics her newfound satisfaction with life, in which simplicity and freedom are commemorated.

“I had a desire to create a brand that reflected a more graceful pace of life,” she says. Having explored the

Christina I proposed… on Valentine’s Day. Corny I know! But, I normally suck at surprises so it seemed like a day I could get away with it. We went for a cute picnic out at Wellington Point. I ended up popping the question after Christina got bitten by a green ant (ouch!) and we were about to pack up the picnic. Of course, she said yes!

Our ceremony… was held on the marquee deck at Victoria Park. We were planning on having a church wedding, but when we went to look for venues, Victoria Park had exactly everything we wanted!

Our favourite moment of our wedding was… the whole day.

We were so grateful it was even able to go ahead due to all the restrictions. Although some restrictions meant we couldn’t have everything we wanted, it didn’t affect how amazing and beautiful our day was.

We both agree that… our first dance definitely was the most touching part of the reception! In the couple months leading up to the wedding, we had a first dance choregraphed to ‘All Of Me’ by John Legend.

They were tired of only seeing activewear on one type of body. They believed that women deserved better and thought, “Someone needs to do this, and why not us?” So, they launched their brand of stylish activewear that fits and flatters diverse women of all backgrounds. What really hits different is that they never photoshop their images, ever. What you see is what you get!

What started as 100 pairs of tights in a plastic tub, now looks like a team of six, almost 60K followers on Instagram, a cult following online, and a large warehouse in Capalaba. Their growth is testament to a more diverse representation of women in fashion, however, when they were just starting out, local business advice and support was not easy to come by.

Take us back to where it all started and what business advice you followed…

We started Active Truth with no experience in fashion or business. We are self-taught and aren’t afraid to think outside the box and work differently. Our first Google search was “how to start an activewear brand” – we used the information we could find. The local business community is so lucky to now have a free resource like the Brisbane Business Hub (The Hub). An initiative by the Brisbane Economic Development Agency and the Brisbane City Council which offers support to businesses to transform, grow, and network. Professionals can attend events to connect with local business owners and be inspired by others success.

There is a lot of information out there and it can take some wading through to find sound advice.

Using reputable sources like The Hub is a great way to get expert advice and free training.

ealthy isn’t just about the way we look or what we put into our bodies – it’s our views on life and how we live day-to-day.

Whether that be mentally, your relationship with friends and loved ones, your working environment, wellbeing, and your overall outlook at life. These all contribute to having an enjoyable and healthy life not only for yourself, but for everyone around you. As life gets in the way, we often forget to take care of ourselves. With all the stressful and uncertain times we’ve had recently, it really puts things into perspective how important it is to make sure all those healthy practices are in check.

o me, being healthy means having a body and mind that maximises both the quality and quantity of time I can spend doing things I’m passionate about, with the people I love. Great relationships, positive self-image, and regular challenging exercise are all important ingredients in what I consider a healthy life, and it’s important that I maintain these things – plus a freedom from unnecessary pain – as long as nature will allow me to.

think it’s important to make a distinction between ‘healthy’ and ‘body positive’. The two get blurred and while it’s fab to have both – I don’t think it’s fair to say that they’re the same thing. I’m all for body positivity – you do you! But if you’re classified as obese, that isn’t healthy. I won’t get into specific stats (you can look those up for yourself) but the risk of significant health issues dramatically increases for those who are overweight. And that’s what I take issue with.

eing healthy to me is about being strong mentally. Inner peace is really important to me, and the state of your emotions does reflect back on your health. If you feel sad, you tend to feel sluggish, unmotivated, and probably hit the snooze button at least ten times before you get up in the morning.

Happiness allows you to feel energised.

You want to eat well, exercise, and jump out of bed excited about your day.

Mental health is really important too, and if we don’t intuitively listen to our emotional needs then we pay the price through our physical wellbeing.

ince 2006, Skin Revision has been a leader in the industry when it comes to cosmetic services. In particular, facial rejuvenation and non-surgical body sculpting. But going into lockdown in 2020 gave me the time to really focus and make this a reality,” says Owner and Director, Dr Jo Turner. “The rebrand came about because of the changes in knowledge that have emerged over the last 15 years (which is when Skin Revision came into existence).

This includes understanding that the health of your skin, preventing skin ageing, and weight control are linked to a healthy gut and diverse gut microbiota. Inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and rosacea, skin ageing, hair loss, and weight gain are related to inflammation from poor diet and gut health. The experience of wellness, and feeling energetic and happy also starts with gut health,” she says.

As the team transition to a new name (Pearl being a classic symbol of natural beauty and wisdom), the science-based integrative cosmetic medicine clinic is also now a sustainable salon since January, with waste being recycled and not ending up in landfill. It’s just another way the team are committed to a healthy and holistic approach to beauty and business.

Remaining within their delightful signature offerings will be their doctor-only cosmetic injectables, thread facelifts, dermal filler treatments, and non-surgical fat reduction treatments. With this, Pearl Medispa has introduced a new range of wellness offerings that the team has spent six months studying.

These range from gut healing protocols with Cellogic – a science-based approach to repair gut cells and lining (leaky gut), nutritional supplements essential for healthy skin, a naturopathic approach with a referral for more complex conditions, and gut microbiome testing

“The application of this is easy, but the science behind it is very complicated, so it has required a lot of training, as none of this is included in mainstream medical or therapy education,” says Dr Jo. “The whole team has evolved in this process – even our head receptionist Lizzie is into wellness and nutrition! The key team members in the transition have been my amazing practice manager Olivia, who is passionate about nutrition and an advocate of a vegan diet, Dr Sara, our lead cosmetic physician, who is an accredited clinician for prescribing the nutrigenomic gut healing protocols, and Emma our lead laser therapist, who is studying naturopathy and passionate about an integrative approach. Our whole team is amazing and our talented physicians are always learning and evolving,” she says.

Skin rejuvenation 101 Skin rejuvenation is all about two things: dead skin and collagen. The skin surface collects layers of dead skin cells that turn over rapidly when we’re young. As we age, this process slows, making our skin look dull, flaky, and patchy like a dirty windscreen. Removing these cells is vital for a radiant result. We can achieve this with facials, chemical peels, gentle exfoliants, and good quality skincare.

Glowing skin needs more collagen. This is the elastic that makes our skin look plump, thus decreasing fine lines and wrinkles (think of an old pair of knickers when the elastic “goes” compared to when they’re new). The solution?

chilli-lime beef tacos Serves 4 You’ll need: 600g skirt steak Finely grated zest and juice of 3 limes, plus extra wedges to serve 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil ½ red onion, finely diced 1 avocado, diced 1 tomato, deseeded and diced 1 handful of coriander leaves For the chilli and cumin spice rub 2 tsp sea salt 1 tsp each of dried chilli flakes, coconut sugar and ground cumin ½ tsp each of ground coriander, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and black pepper For the tortillas 2 large eggs, beaten 1 cup coconut milk 1 cup arrowroot or tapioca flour 3 tbsp coconut flour ½ tsp sea salt 2–3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil or butter

Method Place the steak in a bowl, pour over the lime juice, and leave to marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature. To make the tortillas, whisk all the ingredients except the oil or butter in a bowl to form a smooth batter. Heat a little of the oil or butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Pour ¼ cup of the mixture into the pan, then tilt and swirl the pan to spread the batter into a 10cm circle. Reduce the heat to low and cook for one to two minutes until sturdy 58

enough to flip, then cook for the same time on the other side until cooked through, puffed up and golden brown. Transfer the tortilla to a plate and repeat this process, adding a little more oil each time, to make eight small tortillas.

Meanwhile, to make the spice rub, combine all the ingredients and the lime zest in a small bowl. Coat both sides of the steak with the spice rub, using your fingers to press firmly to ensure that the rub sticks to the meat. Preheat STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

the barbecue grill to hot and grease with a little of the olive oil. Place the steak on the grill and cook for about 5 minutes on each side. Transfer to a wooden board, cover loosely with foil, and leave to rest for 10 minutes.

Once rested, cut the steak into thin strips.

Place the red onion, avocado, tomato, and remaining oil in a bowl and mix well. Top the tortillas with the avocado mixture and steak, scatter over the coriander leaves, and serve with some lime wedges.

cheat’s peach salad with smashed raspberry dressing Serves 4 You’ll need: 4 yellow or white peaches, stones removed and flesh cut into wedges 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive or avocado oil 2 loosely packed cups of watercress 1 treviso radicchio, leaves separated and roughly torn 1 tbsp baby capers, rinsed and drained For the smashed raspberry dressing 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive or avocado oil Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 small handful of chervil or flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely chopped 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 100g raspberries Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Preheat the barbecue grill to hot. Coat the peach in the oil, then cook for one to two minutes on each side or until slightly softened and beautifully charred. Set aside on a plate. In a large bowl, toss the watercress, radicchio and capers.

To make the dressing, place the oil, lemon zest and juice, fresh herbs, and vinegar in a bowl or jar and either whisk or shake well. Add the raspberries and use a fork to roughly mash them. Whisk or shake well, until you’ve got a lovely pink dressing with some chunky raspberry pieces. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Add the peaches to the salad, pour over the dressing, and toss gently to ensure everything is well coated. Pile onto a large platter, and serve.

WILD COUNTRY Lisa Alexander @lisa_alexander_photography Tell us why you decided to call the Outback home?

The Queensland Outback has always been home for me. My family has been in the Blackall area for five generations and I am thankful every day that I get to raise our family on the land.

How would you describe the Outback lifestyle?

You can take the girl out of the bush, but you can never take the bush out of the girl! The challenges and extraordinary moments this lifestyle offers defines me as a person, along with a deep love of the land and all that goes with it. To live in a small community, especially as one gets older, gives me a sense of place and connection, and this reinforces my sense of belonging. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

QUICK FIRE: Where would you take visitors for the best your town has to offer?

The first stop would be our very own Hollywood sign on the outskirts of town. The eight individual letters of Blackall stand seven metres high! I would follow this by heading to Ram Park for a morning of being entertained by Stewie (the former stockman turned guide) as he talks us through the old buildings and artefacts of Blackall’s history. The afternoon would then be spent at Blackall Woolscour, learning about the only working steam powered wool scouring plant that still exists in the southern hemisphere.

Favourite weekend activity?

Heading into town to share a great coffee and chat with friends.

Best hidden gem?

Lake Dunn at Aramac. A 200km art trail of 40 unique and diverse sculptures are dotted alongside the road. These are all made from recycled metal pieces sourced from the local area.

Best view in the Outback?

Mt Slowcombe at Yaraka. 360 degree views of the surrounding landscape and what a magical place to view a typical outback sunset.

Beautiful weather, friendly people, and perfectly situated between the Gold and Sunshine Coasts for outdoor adventures.

How would you describe the Brisbane lifestyle?

It’s very laidback; we enjoy a good work-life balance and spend a lot of time outdoors to make the most of the climate.

You’ve got out-of-towners coming for visit, where would you take them for the best Brisbane has to offer?

I’d show off our sunny skies with a riverside walk at Southbank then head to GOMA to admire the amazing artwork from our Queensland creatives.

For lunch, we’d take a trip on a CityCat and dine at Howard Smith Wharves. After a few ciders at Felons Brewing Co., we’d stroll to James Street for some shopping before checking them in to The Calile Hotel for the night.

THE FARMER’S LIFE Fiona Malcomson @ourfarmtales Tell us why you call the Mary Valley Region home?

As soon as we started having kids, we knew we wanted their childhood to be immersed in nature surrounded by wide open spaces. We’d been looking for acreage for a while and although the Mary Valley was never originally on our radar, when this property came up we instantly knew it was home!

Brunching!

How would you describe the farm lifestyle?

Everyone is very friendly. The laid back, old fashioned way of life truly is the best. Most places aren’t open on Sundays which is kind of great.

Best hidden gem?

Saturdays at Halo Ground Fortitude Valley for the live music and great coffee.

Tell us where you’d take your friends for a visit?

I’d start our day with a coffee run to Kenilworth Bakery, followed by a delicious brunch at one of our faves, Soma Soma. We’d then take them for a scenic ride on the Mary Valley Rattler – a beautiful old steam train! For lunch we’d head to Kandanga Farm Store Cafe, the best place for real farm-to-fork dining. Their bacon and egg burger is a winner. We’d end the day by heading back to the homestead, taking a tour of our new veggie patch and then a delicious home cooked meal for dinner. Our signature roast brisket (with the best meat from Shaw’s Meats), with roasties, a hint of rosemary, greens and gravy!
