W

ow, what a whirlwind this month has been. Has anyone else noticed how Brissy feels like it’s really coming alive again? Every time I turn around there’s another fabulous restaurant or bar opening, a cool concert or festival, or a brand new development spanning our skyline. What a time to be a Queenslander, hey! This month marks our annual creative issue which is a real favourite of mine as it champions the trendsetters and go-getters throughout our city. On our cover is the Brisbane Lions Women’s players like you’ve never seen them before. Ally, Emily, and Orla are champions of not only our Brisbane sport-scene, but also the sisterhood. Which is especially important as we celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. Speaking of 6

ravelling the world and rubbing shoulders with global thought leaders on social projects is a proud career flex of mine, but nothing compares to the work I’ve done leading up to my dream role locally here at BEDA. It’s fast-paced and an extraordinary privilege to help deliver a vision for the city. Before my new appointment, I was the CEO at Youngcare for five and a half years. I believe that young people with a disability shouldn’t end up in aged care and I worked passionately on this advocacy throughout my career. It was an exciting time to be working in the sector – I told the story and worked on ensuring there are better outcomes. Now, I have the opportunity to influence the Brisbane

City community and to create a place we’re proud of across the board. My degrees in Arts/Economics and Education from The University of Queensland have helped shape me academically and socially. From being a teacher to an assistant principal, my roles have mostly involved words, but ultimately it’s been about action. My life’s work has always been about social enterprise and it helps to drive what I do here at BEDA. We just need to be creative and innovative – the way that we look at any aspect of society. It’s about taking your blinkers off and looking where the opportunities lie, and that will never happen by sitting at a desk. I’ve worked in disability, hit the streets with MARCH 2022

the homeless, and have been all over the world working with social change. One moment in my career that stands out was working just outside Nairobi in a slum. I was contacted to support a young girl that had been thrown in front of a train because she had a disability. She survived and my team were called to the hospital to help. The mother turned to me and said, “Can you please tell our story? No one cares about us.” It was that moment when I understood leadership is a genuine gift and responsibility to make positive change. Looking ahead, 2032 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Brisbane to host the Olympics. We look at it as a catalyst to building a city we can all be proud of. All eyes are on us!

oing all-in for 2022, the Brisbane Lions AFL Women’s team are well into the business end of their season. The reigning premiers are looking to defend their title and there are high hopes we’ll see Ally, Emily and Orla in action for finals footy come March! We chatted to these three golden players about life on and off the field and how they’re inspiring other young women to chase their goals.

“I’M A HUMBLE AND CARING PERSON BUT ALSO MOTIVATED WITH EVERYTHING I DO.”

ORLA You’re a gifted player, what has been your biggest learnings in this strong female position at age 23? I would say to be consistent with what I do and control what I can. As well as knowing that I’ve done all those little things like nutrition, extra training, gym, and getting good sleep. By doing all of those small things, the end result will take care of itself. How does it feel to be looked up to on the field and also on social media as a successful player? I’m really privileged that I can be a role model to younger players. I try and portray on social media and on-field that hard work, determination, honesty and being yourself are important traits. I just try and portray myself as I am. What is your advice for women who want to be successful? I think it’s important to believe that you can be successful. Being consistent with everything you do is really important too, as well as knowing when to reach out to people for help. At times I think I can do everything on my own but seeking advice and knowledge from others is key to success. Tell us about your involvement with The Sistergood… It’s a fantastic platform for younger people to see the kind of athletes that we are. I know AFLW is part-time and we all have lives outside of footy and The Sistergood is really great at portraying that. It also gives young people someone to look up to because there are so many different personalities. Through The Sistergood, they can find someone they can relate to!

EMILY You’re one of Brisbane Lions AFLW foundation players, what have these years been like? It’s been a dream to play AFLW because that’s all I wanted to do was to play footy at the highest level. There’s been plenty of highs and lows. We had the highs of reaching two grand finals, and then the lows of being hit by expansion, losing players, and having to build that list. And then rebuilding that list and winning a premiership. It’s been a journey of self-improvement and growth for me as a person and a football player. What are your top career highlights? Obviously winning the premiership, you can’t beat that! But getting to do it alongside some of the girls I started my AFLW journey with such as the Foundation Eight was a big highlight. We went through the highs and lows of it all and getting to hold up that trophy together was a moment I won’t forget. What’s your mission as a strong female leader? My mission, as cliché as it is, is being a role model to those girls who look up to us all and showing them that they can be strong, independent, and fierce people who can do whatever they want to do. It’s about inspiring that next generation and leaving them a league and a career that they can actually pursue, doing all those hard yards so that they can have a career that’s full-time.

ALLY How would you describe yourself in a sentence, Ally? I’m a proud Ghungalu woman who’s passionate about Indigenous education. I value kindness and I’m always motivated to try and be the best version of myself.

“BEING A PART OF THE SISTERGOOD IS ALL ABOUT BEING PART OF A MOVEMENT THAT EXISTS SO THAT WOMEN CAN EMPOWER EACH OTHER AND SHARE THEIR STORIES. SIMPLE AS THAT.”

Who or what inspires you? In a way, the whole team inspires me. Just to see them do so well and to see what they do on and off the field, it makes me want to be better. 12

What has your journey been like on and off the field as one of Brisbane Lions AFLW foundation players? It’s been a journey! I started off my first year not in great shape and it was hard trying to keep up. When I came back for my second year, I was determined to improve and knew I had more to give. Going through pre-season, I ticked off all the things I needed to be doing and had a decent run that season. Since then, I have tried to continue to build; I’ve had to work hard to get where I am now. A big highlight for me is the premiership, that’s always number one hands down. I remember that grand final in the first year, but I didn’t feel like I contributed and felt pretty disappointed, and then the second year, losing the grand final again was still frustrating. So, to finally win it last year meant a lot to me and I felt like I really made a difference.

Can you tell us about your design for the 2022 AFLW Indigenous guernsey? What history does it tell? The inspiration comes from having our totems on the men’s guernsey and having that feeling of pointing to it and being like, “oh there’s me!”. I just wanted everyone to have that feeling of being included. It’s a guernsey not only for the players, but for the fans, family, and support staff on our AFLW journey. What do you love about being a part of The Sistergood? I wanted to be involved with it from the start because of the empowerment element of it, and being able to tell our stories. We all know each other on a personal level, but we want to be able to share it with the outside world, and that’s where The Sistergood comes in.

There will be no rest for the girls as they’ll be leaving the boots at home when they head back to the Gabba and cheer on the boys for their AFL season opener. The Brisbane Lions will take on Port Adelaide in Round 1 on Saturday 19 March at 7.10pm. ALICE BARBERY CEO, Universal Store

L

ike many others motivated by the same reason, Alice Barbery chose a career in retail due to its flexibility. But unlike many others, she fell in love with the industry which would go on to take her all over the world. “Serving people who serve people either feels like a dream job or a nightmare. For me, it’s a joy,” says Alice. For the young CEO of the Brisbane-born Universal Store, Alice has plenty to be proud of in her career to date. “I’m proud of three central things. One, that I dared to back myself – we need to see more women in business showing the courage to fail and to win. Secondly, I’m proud of the culture we have crafted and that I was able to be a key architect of this. Finally, I’m proud that we have been able to demonstrate that winning in business is more readily achieved when you have a great culture. Too many people think these concepts are at odds,” she says. Inspirational women have been at the core of everything Alice has achieved to date, citing her grandmother as her greatest inspiration growing up. “She was incredibly bright and was limited by the social restrictions of her generation. She really encouraged me to be brave and to always put a hand down to bring others with me.” This month, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, female empowerment is at the core of Alice’s drive and determination in the industry. “As a woman in Brisbane, I’d like to be known as someone who proved that you can be both peoplefocused and successful. That I helped other people unlock their potential and achieve success beyond their initial personal beliefs about themselves,” she says.

LEANNE BRYANT Owner and founder, Rinse & Repeat

T

here’s no doubt the last few years has thrown more challenges to poke a stick at for businesses around the world. Closer to home, Leanne Bryant of luxury laundry service, Rinse & Repeat, has dealt with her own share of confronts and come out the other side still sparkling. In addition to the retail laundry trade, Leanne started working in the commercial space, namely within the airline industry. They invested heavily in additional factory space and machinery only to have COVID completely shut down the industry overnight. With additional rent and leases to finance, pivoting their business to keep it afloat had to be done quickly. Launching into the product of 2020 – sanitiser – it proved hard to source, but thankfully, Leanne had industry connections. It soon became apparent that the airlines weren’t resurfacing anytime soon and so Leanne began to source other industries and adapted their customised washes in addition to opening a new services-only shop at Ascot and launching into home deliveries. Keeping a strong marketing presence during the past couple of years has also been paramount. “I knew that when businesses did return, people needed to know we made it through and were raring to go when they were,” she says. Attending network meetings and speaking at National Australia Bank International Women‘s Day 2021, Leanne was recently engaged to be a keynote speaker in July at the Business Educators Association National Conference. “Educating in business is a passion of mine and stems back to my days in accounting. Now I live, breathe, and pivot my way through my own business challenges and triumphs, and can truly say that I completely understand how lonely it can be at the top even with amazing support around you. Wife, mother, physiotherapist, Pilates instructor, and co-founder of Studio Pilates International and Studio Pilates Education are just a few ways to describe Tanya Winter. Starting at a young age, her introduction to Pilates blossomed while splashing in the water – being a cross-training tool at swimming which is serendipitously how she met her husband and co-founder, Jade. Going on to compete in the Olympic Team while Tanya studied a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, they both completed their Pilates instructor training out of their sheer love for it. “Our experience and backgrounds gave us a distinct point of difference and we were able to design a safe and effective workout that eventually became Studio Pilates,” says Tanya. F POP ART PANACHE With an eclectic style combining pop art and expressionism, Gold Coast artist Courtenay McCue is full of sass, chaos, and fun – just like her art. By ANNA WALL

rom metre-high installations and collaborations with some of the region’s biggest breweries, to murals gracing the streets of Queensland and now a new textile design project, artist Courtenay McCue is no onetrick pony, with a unique style that’s caught the attention of HOTA, Foxtel’s primetime show Selling Houses, and even the likes of Mecca Maxima and Nine Lives Bazaar.

Tell us a little bit about your art… I started painting and being interested in art when I was in high school, I had a collage/layered technique which reminded my teacher of Jean-Michel Basquiat, an artist I was unfamiliar with at the time, I started studying the works of Jean-Michel and Andy Warhol and from that starting point, I evolved into my own style. My artwork themes and colour palettes constantly change but mainly always focus on the woman’s face and figure. I am inspired by the illustrative technique used in vintage comic books using simple

You’re not just an artist, but a fashion designer too. Tell us about Duck & Otter… Over the last couple of years, it has always been on my mind, and I finally came up with the label’s name and vision. The name Duck & Otter is inspired by the uniqueness of a platypus; the combination of a duck and otter creates a platypus! Fashion is such a huge platform to express yourself. You can tell a lot about someone by what t-shirt, dress or hat they decide to wear that day.

Do you have a favourite piece of work? My recent collaboration with my good mate Dion Parker. It was such a fun piece to work on as we just added whatever we felt inspired us at the time over a month, which evolved into a chaotic but harmonised artwork. We named the piece “I think it was a Tuesday...”

As a local, the quirks of our city can go completely unnoticed when you’re used to a familiar feeling, but it’s those back alleys and busy thoroughfares that are some of the city’s best-kept secrets. Since its launch in September, the Brisbane App run by Brisbane City Council has had almost 150k downloads from locals and visitors alike searching for and creating their very own bespoke guides around town. On a sunny weekend in January with my husband in tow, we downloaded the app to experience ‘The Best of Brisbane’s Hidden Gems Fortitude Valley’. The best part? No car needed!

Check-in at Ovolo The Valley Known for their whimsical design and quirky pops of persona, we checked the car into valet (where it remained all weekend) and made our way to the city view room. One of my favourite things about Ovolo is the unconventional loot bag and complimentary minibar.

Tucked along McLachlan Street within a historic 120-year-old building, Rosmarino is brimming with casual elegance. Come for the unique interiors straight out of Europe and stay for the incredibly delicious food. Freshly made pasta with rich sauces, cured meats, quality cheeses, and Wagyu beef are brimming with flavours straight from esteemed chef Dario Manca.

Botanical wreath workshop at Helena Rose Arriving in Helena’s teeny tiny minimal waste florist in California Lane, we were treated to champagne and charcuterie before getting our hands busy to create our own wreaths with dried flowers. Daunting at first (what flowers to choose? What colour scheme to pick?) but once the glue gun was in hand it was like an episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race – combining charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.

Dinner at Hôntô Don’t be fooled if you think you’re heading to the loading dock of Lounge Lovers on your way to find the door to this eatery – hidden along Alden Street, Hôntô’s dark and moody motif will have you feeling like you’ve escaped the city for a worldly sojourn. How do you explain creativity?

What may seem like a small problem to an adult, could feel catastrophic to a child or adolescent. Helping children evaluate the true scale of their problem can teach them to analyse the severity of the issue and build resilience around a solution. I recommend assessing this while acknowledging and validating how they are feeling with questions such as, how would you describe the size of your problem? Can your problem be fixed with the help of another person? Or, can you solve the problem on your own? If we avoid the temptation to jump in and rescue our children every time they come to us with a problem, we are teaching them valuable skills to become strong young people with perspective.

The answer is: ‘show me paint the fence’. In the movie, The Karate Kid, Mr Miyagi directs Daniel-san to paint a fence. He thinks he is only doing that, but filled with resentment, conflict ensues between them. It is only when Mr Miyagi commands ‘show me paint the fence’ that Daniel-san instinctively performs the immortalised actions of ‘wax on, wax off’. From a career coaching perspective, this analogy is the equivalent to thinking back to a time when a colleague presented an innovative idea to you that was a bit unusual. Mr Miyagi invites us to think outside the box; to lead us to new ways of thinking. As an employability skill, creativity packs quite a karate chop. ROOM Shameless workaholic, creative director, and interior designer of Design & Co, Grainne Devlin, let us into her brightly-lit Brisbane home to share her style secrets – along with pup, Maggie.

Why is this your favourite room? The sitting room is very much a connecting room within our home, it leads to the dining room and extends onto our outdoor living. The room holds a lot of our favourite artwork, and we feel is a true reflection of our personality; bright, colourful with a hint of eclectic. It is very much a space where my husband, Seamus, and I can relax and switch off. Our puppy Maggie likes to sit on the deck just off the sitting room, keeping an eye on the birds in the garden.

Best career advice you’ve ever received: Back in my footy days an old coach told me a quote by Theodore Roosevelt: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood.” I won’t be held back now by anyone – especially critics!
