Hello and welcome to our March Wellbeing Issue!
We are both very excited to share with you our March cover star, QueensPlaza. With a new fashion season in full swing and Australian fashion at its best, it was only fitting we featured the shopping mecca, aka, the home of Aussie designer fashion. We headed out to the Samford Valley for the cover shoot and boy did it deliver – the moody country skies coupled with Mikayla’s effortless beauty really set the scene. We also wanted to extend a warm thank you to the
beautiful Helena who welcomed us onto her property.
Ever wondered how some women just kick goal after goal? This month we’ve also shined a spotlight on 11 female powerhouses in our Women of Brisbane feature – we love nothing more than seeing women supporting women.
As it is the Wellbeing Issue, we’ve also looked into finding your perfect wellness retreat, why this gut-loving health food brand is making waves in Brisbane, and how to eat your way to glowing skin.
PS don’t miss our exclusive on Silk
EDITOR’S NOTE
Laundry’s stunning new collection and our interview with Brisbane’s very own real-life princess, Shubshri Kandiah, who plays Belle in Beauty and the Beast the Musical (now playing at QPAC).

See you next month.

Sean Chapman
You may recognise his work from some of your favourite restaurants in town.
MR HACKETT BARBER
Sean Chapman, founder and director of Tonic Projects, is a born and bred Brisbanite. The developer, who grew up on the northside, started his fit-out company in 2010, with his very first project being a small salon in Westfield’s Carindale. His business has grown dramatically since then, with some of his most iconic venues being Greca and Yoko at Howard Smith Wharves, Chu the Phat, Southside at Fish Lane, and the soon-to-open Emme on James Street.
“A lot of our fit outs are so bespoke and customised, so we spend a lot of time with clients going through every detail of the project to make sure it is the right outcome,” he says. “Great clients make the project so much more enjoyable.”
Sean adds the most rewarding part of his job is admiring the final result. “When finishing a hospitality fit out and seeing the clients getting ready for trade there is a certain energy that evolves.”
When he’s not busy putting the final touches on a project, you’ll find him trying to get in some exercise, or enjoying some well-earned downtime with his wife and two beautiful daughters. As for what he loves about living and working in Brisbane, Sean says, “It’s big enough to have its own identity, but not too big that
you get lost in the rat race.”
And as we move further into the new year, Sean, who has recently completed a development of four high-end architectural homes in Hawthorne, is looking forward to dabbling more in the residential space with new ideas on the horizon. “I am working through some ideas of further luxury developments,” he says.
He’s also gearing up to start a few more exciting hospitality projects. “Brisbane and the South East is really starting to establish some fantastic venues – stay tuned.”

RELAXED, DIVERSE, ICONIC. WELCOME TO QUEENSPLAZA.
AS HOMEGROWN DESIGNERS CONTINUE TO GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH, JOIN US ON AN ALL-AUSSIE EXPLORATION OF QUEENSPLAZA’S BEST.
It’s no secret Australian fashion is having a moment in the sun… with its understated, laidback sense of ease, and quintessential unpretentious nature, it’s no wonder that our little island nation is making global waves. And if there’s one destination that puts our wonderful Australian designers front and centre, it’s QueensPlaza, Brisbane’s leading destination for luxury retail.
The shopping mecca located in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD on Queen Street Mall is home to a slew of high-end brands and Queensland’s flagship five-storey David Jones department store (honestly, just riding the escalator and admiring the store is worth the trip alone). On Ground Level, you’ll find a range of international designers like Balenciaga, Fendi, Dior, and Chanel, but head up to Level 1 and you’ll be in Australian fashion design heaven.
Cruise through a sea of well-loved Aussie brands such as Aje, Viktoria & Woods, Zimmerman, Scanlan Theodore, and newcomer Rebecca Vallance (for all RV enthusiasts, this is the first-ever boutique in Queensland – no more shopping online!). Other favourites include Camilla, Gorman, and Sacha Drake.
your significant other? Fellas can expect a wonderful variety of Australian and international brands such as R.M. Williams, Country Road, Ted Baker, Rodd & Gunn, and Polo Ralph Lauren.
With the autumn winter season upon us and new arrivals dropping regularly, now is the perfect time to pop in store. In need of a new power suit? The Cedric Blazer, Vest, and Pants by Rebecca Vallance, which is featured on this month’s cover, is a favourite – talk about power dressing!
We already all know a little black dress is a wardrobe staple, but if you’re on the hunt for something a little bit different, the Escapism Dress by Aje (pictured, right) is a fabulous choice (you never know when you’ll be called up to attend a gala last minute, right?). The crepe ruffle detailing and semi-sheer bodice adds an elevated touch to the already-flattering silhouette. Add a trench (we’d recommend perusing Camilla and Marc in David Jones) and you’re covered on all weather fronts.
LOCAL FASHION AT ITS VERY FINEST, RIGHT HERE AT QP.
Now it wouldn’t be a visit to QueensPlaza without a wander through David Jones. From the beautiful display of cosmetics lining the entrance to the shelves upon shelves of homewares and gifts, the department store never fails to deliver, however, our happy place is on Level 1 where you’ll find the designer womenswear section. While they have favourites like Aje, Zimmermann, Sass & Bide, and Scanlan Theodore, there’s also a variety of other beloved Aussie brands to browse from such as Bianca Spender, Carla Zampatti, Camilla and Marc, Ginger & Smart, Leo Lin, St Agni, Bec & Bridge, Shona Joy, and Alemais, to name a few. There are plenty more new season arrivals to discover in store including this gorgeous chocolate set by Viktoria & Woods and the Rosemary Shirt and Manuela Jean by Camilla and Marc (this jean combo screams off-duty cool girl). PS, we also have our eyes on the Geanie Sequin Gown by Alemais – it’s the perfect slip-on style that you can either dress up or down depending on the occasion.
So, the next time you’re out and about in the city or need some retail therapy, pop QueensPlaza at the top of your list – you truly won’t be disappointed.

DARING. DAZZLING. DIAMONDS.
Tiffany & Co. at QueensPlaza has a new look and it’s everything you’ve ever dreamed of and more.
Everyone remembers receiving their first little blue box, maybe it was for your Sweet 16th or from your now-husband (eek, every girl’s dream, right?), whatever the occasion, there’s something so special (and exciting!) about unwrapping a Tiffany & Co. box, from the bag to the lavish white ribbon, and of course, the box and it’s contents!
Well, now you can relive the magic as the new and improved QueensPlaza Tiffany & Co. store, which marks the House’s ninth store in Australia, has been unveiled – and it’s everything we ever dreamed of and more.
Right from the first glance, passers-by and incoming shoppers alike are drawn into the glittering world of Tiffany & Co. Boasting an impressive refurbishment made to celebrate the brand’s centuries-old legacy of timeless craftsmanship and exquisite design, the store’s exterior, designed by Hugh Dutton, features a kinetic light sculpture resembling the brilliance of the iconic diamonds of Tiffany & Co., offering a captivating experience before you even set foot inside the store.

Upon entering, custom textured silk wall panels (designed by Peter Marino for Rubelli) line the walls. The store also features an eye-catching blue bird wall with glass gems inspired by Jean Schlumberger’s iconic Bird on a Rock designs. Meanwhile, within the love and engagement salon, a bespoke handblown glass chandelier made in collaboration with LASVIT shines overhead, adding to the ambience of the store and exuding charm and luxury.
The all-new fit out, which showcases everything from Tiffany High Jewellery and Love & Celebration to designer jewellery, Tiffany Icons, and Home & Accessories creations, even includes two uniquely designed private enclaves (complete with gold raked plaster walls commissioned by contemporary artist Casper Jansen) for esteemed clients of the brand.
Finally, those familiar with the brand will also be delighted to discover Australia’s first Elsa Peretti® gallery – home to some of the most beloved and organic Tiffany & Co. designs from collections past, such as the iconic bone cuff and fashion-forward bean pendant. If that’s not enough to warrant a visit, then we’re not sure what is!

LOST YOUR STYLE M O O ? J
Are micro trends the death of personal style?
We ask one of Brisbane’s leading fashion names, Samantha Ogilvie.
By BIANCA LICINA
As a society, we are guilty of believing what we see on social media. Whether it be fake news, photoshopped images or unsubstantiated health advice, you name it and we’re guilty of believing it. The same goes for fashion. Where once we turned to monthly magazines for the latest trends and tips, now we open our phone and find the latest trend of the week and trust it like Vogue.
From tomato girl to ballet core, 2023 was the year of never-ending microtrends perpetuated by social media. Blindly following whatever the Hailey Bieber’s of the world are wearing, us younger gens are constantly enamoured by ‘what’s hot’ whilst totally disregarding what we may actually like.
As a fashion lover myself, I am not immune to the pull of micro trends, having sampled a few myself. That was until I stopped and asked myself, does anyone truly have their own sense of style anymore?
We chatted to one of Brisbane’s leading fashion names, Samantha Ogilvie, to get
her take on this phenomenon.
“Personal style comes with confidence and working out what looks best on you and what you feel best in that isn’t necessarily a trend,” Samantha says.
“Everyone is following something blindly without thinking ‘does that actually work for me?’ Everyone ends up looking like clones and it’s boring!”
With extensive experience in the fashion industry owning her own boutique on James Street, Samantha’s words of wisdom on how to find your personal style amidst social media are simple; do your research to find what looks best on you.
“Like anything it’s about educating yourself,” she says. “Research trends and look at their source such as runway shows, rather than turning to celebrities. Think about what actually suits you and your body. What people suit is often what they feel best in and that’s what people need to consider.
Stray away from the norm, experiment, research, and dig a little deeper to find yourself and that, my friend, is the way to finding your personal style.

LIVING MINDFUL
TDid you know that regulating your nervous system will lead to a more mindful life?
By LAUREN PAYNE
his year, it’s time to slow down and ensure we’re taking care of ourselves inside and out. It’s time for us all to live slowly and mindfully by prioritising rest and ensuring our nervous system is balanced, so we can be fully present and ready to tackle whatever new and exciting adventures life sends our way.
The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves, and controls how our body communicates and adapts to both internal and external changes.
If your nervous system isn’t working the way it’s meant to, it could cause a variety of health issues and eventually lead to burnout.
Naturopath and Whole Health Studio Founder Tia Miers says it’s become more important than ever for people to regulate their nervous systems and find time to restore their energy each day.
“A dysregulated nervous system can interfere with your energy levels, focus, and make you feel generally depleted,” Tia explains.
“It’s also really common for this to impact relationships at home or in the workplace because you have a lower tolerance to stress, which can then lead to overwhelm and impatience.”
Other signs your nervous system may need rebalancing include low energy, irritability, reliance on coffee (three cups before 11am is a red flag!), trouble sleeping, anxiety, and feeling uncomfortable when it comes to rest or slowing down.
So, how can we take a step back, rebalance our nervous systems, and ensure we’re
living mindfully?
Tia believes meditation is a great way to help slow down your breathing and regulate your heartbeat. She recommends using the app Insight Timer for calming, guided practices.
Tia also advises taking adaptogens to help improve your body’s response to stress. Her Energy and Stress Support capsules are formulated with a blend of three mushrooms and a series of adaptogenic herbs to assist with stamina and cognitive function.
Another way to prevent burnout and regulate your nervous system is by scheduling in moments of rest. “Rest is productive too, so set aside time in your week for some slow mornings and relaxation,” Tia says.
Tia also recommends eating blood sugar balancing meals that include a carb, protein, and fat source at every meal (including snack time!).
When it comes to exercising, Tia says low impact movement is best. “Sometimes when we are in a state of stress, intense exercise only makes things worse,” Tia explains. “Instead try something like Pilates, yoga or just a nice beach walk.”
Finally, if you’re wanting to balance your nervous system, one of the easiest ways to do it is by getting enough good quality sleep.
“The brain and nervous system need time to rest and restore themselves,” Tia explains. “Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day as this can help to reset your circadian rhythm and creating a night time routine is just a nice way to allow your body and mind to slow down at the end of the day.”

GET GIDDY WITH IT
Everything you need to know about BNE’S booming health food brand, Giddy Citizen.
By TEAGAN WITHEROW
In the world of health and wellness where fads come and go it can be difficult to spot something you know will last, that is until you come across a brand built with integrity and backed with science-based knowledge – a brand like Giddy Citizen. We sat down with Founder Georgina Woods to find out more about how it all began.
Like many of us joining run clubs at the moment, Georgina caught the running bug after completing the Great Wall of China Marathon (followed by all six world marathon majors). Around the same time, she also hit the books, studying a New York-based health coaching program. It was this program coupled with her love for running that opened her eyes to the wonders of nutrition for both the mind and the body.
“Twice a week, I’d join forces with a running charity, pounding the pavement alongside some incredible youths facing homelessness and complex challenges,” Georgina says. “Every stride with them felt like a shot of positivity, boosting the mental
resilience of these amazing kids and young adults. We’d chat about nutrition and discuss how food impacts our health and mood.”
It was this passion for wellness that led to the birth of Giddy Citizen – a brand hoping to make healthy living accessible for all. From Water Kefir Sodas and Kefir Krauts to Apple Cider Vinegar Gut Tonics, Giddy Citizen offers a range of nourishing goodies.
“We create products that do more with less,” she says. “Our super-dosed and thoughtfully-sourced low-sugar and plant-based ingredients make our delicious and functional foods and bevvies have that ‘feel good’ factor.”
With new products and developments in the pipeline, the future of Giddy Citizen is looking as bright as a rainbow (minus the pot of gold, but who needs gold when you’ve got gut-loving goodness instead?).

WELLNESS
You’ll need:
Fresh tea leaves (from the camellia sinensis tree species)
Steamer
Baking tray
Coffee bean grinder
Fine mesh sift
Sip, sip, matcha bliss!
A cup full of zen.
Hands down, matcha is the superfood of tea and you cannot convince us otherwise. Not only is this green goodness rising in popularity, but its health benefits are elite. Matcha uses the nutrients from the entire tea leaf and contains more antioxidants than a typical green tea. Plus, it’s known to help protect the liver, boost brain function, and promote heart health. But have you ever wondered how it’s made (you know, the process that comes before the powder)? Here’s how:
Method:
Preheat the oven to 175°C fan forced.
Steam the leaves for 1-2 minutes to allow the tea leaf to get soggy. This process is important to achieve the green colour.
Spread the leaves in one layer on a lined baking tray and let sit for 10 minutes.
Bake the leaves for 5 to 10 minutes
to dry them. Make sure they don’t turn brown.
Remove any steams and veins from the leaves and crush them using your fingers.
Grind the leaves into a powder using a coffee grinder.
Store the powder in an airtight container in a cool, dark place or make your preferred matcha; iced or hot.

SUPER SPECIAL FEATURE
EMILY ZHOU AND NEENA CARTER
Founders, Ambedo Beauty
Everyone says, ‘never go into business with friends’, but besties Emily Zhou and Neena Carter are proof that sometimes going against the norm pays off.
“It really was two peas in a pod situation; two friends whose passions and interests moulded together to create Ambedo Beauty,” Neena says. “It has only made our personal friendship stronger, and we always consider how lucky we are that our interests and strengths complement each other so much!”
Emily, who has a background in business, and Neena, who is beauty obsessed, founded Ambedo Beauty on the basis that everyone deserves access to high-quality, affordable, and fun nail products. So, the duo created a 6-in-1 solid gel nail polish palette, which they like to call ‘nail shadows’, that can be easily applied at home.
“We found that many people find it hard to apply liquid gels at home, so we wanted to create a solid textured gel that anyone from beginner to pro can use in the comfort of their home,” she says. “Whether it’s mums with young bubs who want an easy-to-use product or someone who wants to take their nail art to the next level, our product can suit everyone’s needs.”
As for who does what within the business, Emily lives for behind-the-scenes, crunching numbers, while Neena loves handling the more front-facing elements of the business, aka social media.
“We just ‘gel’ incredibly well together and find that our respective roles in this business intertwine perfectly,” Neena says.
We can’t wait to see what this female-founded business does next!
WE LOVE building amazing connections with our customers.”

After two years as the International Group Sales Manager for Fairmont The Palm, Christine took a role as the Sales and Brand Marketing Director for her now-husband’s business, and as they say, the rest was history. “Nothing felt impossible in Dubai, and we brought that mentality back home with us.”
Christine and Ross have since opened seven successful businesses in Brisbane (they’ve sold off two), with a few more in the works this year, including one at the highly-anticipated Queen’s Wharf – the details of which are still under lock and key.
When Christine is not busy organising content shoots and dreaming up out-of-the-box events with her team as Director of PR and Marketing, she likes to spend her days off walking her dog and catching up with friends over a movie.
“Building and operating venues at this level and at this pace can quickly become your everything,” she reveals. “Now I have learnt that balance really is key, and that rest and relaxation is as important as the fast-paced grind.”
As for what it’s like being a female business owner in the hospitality industry, Christine says, “For the longest time I really worked in the shadows, building our brands up in the background, but never writing myself into the story. What I’ve learnt though is that we need to see more women out there kicking goals.”

REBECCA TAYLOR
Brand Photographer, Rebecca Taylor Photography
Rebecca Taylor’s mission has always been to inspire women to step into the spotlight and to have their contributions recognised. Visual communication, especially portrait photography, has been a theme throughout her creative career and is clearly the secret weapon to her success.
“Beyond the commercial and business benefits of having professional portraits taken, the real power lies in the deep personal transformation that can happen during the photoshoot,” Rebecca explains.
Rebecca Taylor Photography launched in 2010 and her business now includes leadership branding photography, visibility mentoring, and brand strategy to further support her clients in building a public profile with impact.
“One of my biggest insights as a personal branding photographer has been understanding the insecurities that arise whilst being photographed. I then coach my clients through the process of bringing their authentic self into the photoshoot.”
Rebecca, who spends her downtime almost always surrounded by good music, great food, and inspiring conversation, is gearing up for another exciting year ahead.
“I am partnering with Brisbane leaders for branding photo experiences and touring my signature photoshoot events in Sydney and Melbourne,” she says. “I also can’t wait to facilitate my Leadership Visibility Breakthrough program in 2024.”

AMELIA JANE
Founder, Milly The Space
When Amelia Jane first started The Milly Space from her garage in 2020, she never envisioned it would evolve into what it is today. Not only is she the owner of a popular Gold Coast hair salon, but she also runs online masterclasses for aspiring hairdressers, which has seen her travel all around the globe, and is the proud owner of The Milly Club, a chic apparel business for creators (if we weren’t already in the publishing business, we’d make the jump to hair and makeup just to wear her fabulous aprons, they are that chic).
“After a year of working from home, I craved a team environment and there was so much demand from other stylists for me to share my education –this meant I needed a much bigger space!”
As for how she manages all three businesses, Amelia says it’s quite the juggling act. “There is always a lot to juggle, but I love that no day is the same,” she says. “I service clients and manage Milly The Space and the beautiful team. I curate, film, and create content for my education platform, as well as plan and teach masterclasses online and globally. I also design and manage The Milly Club.”
And this mum-to-be isn’t slowing down anytime soon. She’s not only welcoming a baby boy in July, but is also gearing up to launch a clothing brand later this year – so it’s fair to say Amelia doesn’t do things by halves.
“I have worked hard and achieved a lot in the past two years and this year I want to focus on celebrating my achievements with the hope I can inspire others to do so too.”
My vision for Milly The Space was to create a beautiful, calm, and homely experience.”

SAMARA SEARLE
Company Director, Beauty Boost Aesthetic Clinic
Samara Searle always knew she wanted to open her own aesthetic clinic. She had a passion for both medicine and beauty, so it was a nobrainer she’d eventually go down this path, however, before she made the move to the cosmetic world, she was working as an intensive care nurse.
Since 2018, Samara, who has seven years’ experience as an advanced cosmetic injector and trainer, has been slowly chipping away at her dream. She first started Beauty Boost Aesthetic Clinic as a side hustle before turning it into a full-blown business in 2022, and she’s now just relocated to the beautiful suburb of Teneriffe.
“I feel a stigma has been built [around] injectables from society and celebrities, when really, if placed correctly in the face, you can enhance someone’s natural beauty,” she says. “I love the trust clients put in me with their faces!”
A normal day for Samara starts with a leisurely wake up, before getting stuck into the work day, which includes everything from client bookings and appointments to social media content.
As for what’s in store for the year ahead, Samara is looking forward to seeing what the new space brings and hopes it becomes a onestop shop for all your beauty needs – watch this space.

GRACE MAHER OF HUMMINGBIRD THE SHOP, MELITA BURTON OF STYLE ME LUXE, TINA WORLAND OF ANTICA STYLE, LESA PODBURY OF DRESSED AT WINDSOR, AND SUNSHINE FITZGERALD OF OUR SUNROOM
THE SISTERHOOD OF FASHION
Grace, Melita, Tina, Lesa, and Sunshine are proof there’s nothing more important than building a supportive network of like-minded women around you.
There’s nothing more refreshing than seeing women supporting women and we absolutely adore the comradery between these five leading fashion ladies. With stores all around Brisbane, we couldn’t help but wonder how Tina Worland of Antica Style, Lesa Podbury of Dressed at Windsor, Grace Maher of Hummingbird The Shop, Sunshine Fitzgerald of Our Sunroom, and Melita Burton of Style Me Luxe, became friends and why their friendship is important.
“After surviving Covid, it became increasingly necessary to check in with fellow business owners to see how we were holding up,” Sunshine says. “Lesa and I were already the best of friends, and I regularly ran into the other girls in West End picking up stock.”
Grace, whose store resides in Paddington, took it upon herself to start an Instagram group. “It has really only been in the last year that we have actively come together to just hang out, unwind (and be wined), and talk all things fashion, business, and life,” she says. “The five of us have very unique and individual styles and instead of seeing competition, we have all embraced our differences and really appreciate and admire what
each of us do.”
Lesa, who has been a friendly face in the Windsor community since 2017, agrees, saying, “I believe it’s important for the community to know that although we operate similar businesses, there is no competition between us, only respect and support.”
As for why they love what they do, Tina from Antica Style believes it comes down to one thing, “The transformation on a woman’s face when she is happy with her reflection in the mirror is priceless.”
While Melita says, “I love changing women’s views about loving their body no matter what size or shape and pushing their boundaries when it comes to fashion and style.”
Grace on the other hand, loves the passion Brisbane women have for fashion, saying, “What I love most about Brisbane and fashion is the love of colour and fun, and that women really do love expressing themselves through what they wear. From a jazzed up pair of sunglasses to a fabulous sequined dress, fashion should be fun and I think Brisbane really understands and embraces that.”
We can’t wait to see what these wonderful ladies do next!

HEART ON SLEEVE
St Joseph’s Nudgee College is breaking down barriers to mental health support.
The daily life of an adolescent male is complex; a delicate balance of school work, hobbies, and social interactions all whilst the world rapidly evolves around them. Pandemics, natural disasters, and social media pressure have become the norm for adolescents in these times, and with this, an undeniable rise in mental illness. In studies conducted by Beyond Blue and the Queensland Government, one in seven young people aged 4 to 17 experience a mental health condition in any given year. Despite men being at the greatest risk of suicide, they are least likely to seek help due to the stigma attached to it, with 62.9 per cent worried about what other people might think.
With these statistics in mind, St Joseph’s Nudgee College began spearheading Mental Wellbeing Week. Dedicated entirely to putting mental health at the forefront of all students, staff, and the wider community, the week focuses on students engaging in meaningful dialogue around learning how to express their feelings, wearing their hearts on their sleeves,
and understanding where their mental wellness sits at all times.
Each year, the College’s senior cohort wears a heart badge on their sleeve to prompt conversations amongst the students and staff. Throughout the week students are given a heart to write messages of support and notes on their personal struggles to then be hung on the College’s Spirit Tunnel for all to read.
Although this is a dedicated week, the College runs a yearly program designed to champion all of the students through content focussing on men’s health. The program encourages students to reflect, learn, and develop better attitudes and behaviours and ensure they are going out into the world with love, respect, trust, dignity, and kindness.
Be a part of the Nudgee Spirit and join them for Open Day on 18 May.

Path to success
Planning to buy your first home or property? Below, I’ve shared a few tips to help you secure a property in a sellers market.
1. Never get emotional about a property, there will always be another one.
2. Get to know the market you are considering purchasing in. Market knowledge will give you the confidence to move quickly when the right property comes along.
3. Introduce yourself to real estate agents, ask them questions, and build relationships with them. Agents you have relationships with will help you and give you access to off-market options when they trust you.
4. Make sure you have a core group of professionals on your side. Get finance pre-approved, have your building and pest inspector ready to go, and arm yourself with a quality conveyancing solicitor who will be there to answer any legal questions you may have.
Purchasing property isn’t about digging your heels in and refusing to budge on price, it’s about relationships, communication, and making sensible concessions to get the best outcome.

STYLING TIPS
with Mark Ferguson
Look good, feel good
As the age-old saying goes, ‘if you look good, you feel good’. How we choose to dress is not just an aesthetic choice, but a profound engagement with the self. For example, what we choose to wear and how we present ourselves are not superficial decisions, but deeply ingrained practices of self- expression.
By aligning our external image with our internal state, we invite a positive perception that can, in turn, influence our interactions. This synergy has the power to alter not only how we view ourselves but how we are viewed.
To look good and feel good is to harness a form of silent communication, a signal to the world (and to us) that we are not just present, but profoundly engaged in the narrative of our own making. This is not just about aesthetics, it’s about wellbeing, the intricate dance between appearing powerful and feeling empowered, and leading not just with words but with presence.
SOCIAL MEDIA
with Lisa Cameron
Level up your game
With over 79 per cent of Australians on social media and 57 per cent of brands using it for marketing, social media has become a key player in sales growth. It’s no longer just an extra – it’s essential for success. But keeping up with changing algorithms, content trends, and the complexities of paid advertising can be daunting.
That’s where a digital agency can come in handy. Instead of struggling to master everything yourself or leaving it to one person, trust experts who specialise in strategy, content creation, ads, copywriting, photography, and design. You wouldn’t re-wire a house without an electrician, and your digital marketing is no different.
Working with the right agency means partnering with multiple people whose job it is to be the very best in their field. Their skills and expertise will save you time and (if they’re doing their job well) money in the long run.
So, if you’re ready to level up your digital game hassle-free, slide into my DMs. Your business –and your bottom line – will thank you later.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY with Dr John Barletta
Farewell, arrivederci, goodbye
Elle Macpherson and I are both 60 this month, and it heralds a change for me. After 13 years of writing for this fabulous magazine, this is my final column. I’ve covered the range of wellbeing topics, consistently offering easy-to-apply, practical advice to enhance quality of life. The favourable responses I’ve received have been appreciated. As a health practitioner, it’s gratifying to know that I’ve made such a positive difference in people’s lives.
Over my 40 years of professional work, mental health and wellness have shifted significantly from being a taboo area tinged with stigma, to a topic many discuss openly, being psychologically-minded because of self-help books and media coverage.
Enjoying retirement in my rural retreat by spending time with interesting people, doing fun and meaningful stuff (I recently joined the social club Maleny Men’s Shed), enhances my healthy, happy, productive, good life. I wish the same for all of you. Oh, and happy birthday Elle!

VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp
Exercising with varicose veins
If you suffer from varicose veins, do you need to give up high impact exercise?
No, all exercise should be encouraged as the health benefits outweigh the risks. However, there are adjustments that can be made in order to reduce pressure on your venous system. For example, with weight lifting, you should get training to make sure you have good technique with postural form and breathing. Or if running, pull on those compression socks and explore off the pavement on to softer surfaces like grass or running tracks. No matter what your fitness jam is we recommend that you:
• Get supportive shock absorbing shoes designed for the sport you are participating in
• Remember to warm up and stretch correctly prior to a session and always do a cool down post work out
• Mix up your routine with some low impact exercise like yoga, cycling, or swimming
• Have a rest day each week and give yourself a gentle leg massage.

JULIE ADAMS
Shubshri Kandiah has a penchant for playing princesses. She’s portrayed Princess Jasmine (a role that propelled her to national stardom), Cinderella, and now she’s starring as Belle in Beauty and the Beast the Musical. The Brisbane-based performer, who grew up in Perth, has shared a glimpse into her everyday life and why she’s so excited to share this reimagined version of Belle with the world.
Hi Shubshri, thanks for chatting with us and congratulations on landing the leading role as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast the Musical. How has it been?
Thank you so much. We’ve just finished a wonderfully successful season in Sydney. That was the first stop on our tour, and it was great to see how much people loved the show. It makes me very excited to now be sharing it with a Queensland audience.
You’ve played Princess Jasmine, Cinderella, and now Belle, how does it feel to have represented so many iconic female characters? They really are all iconic in their own ways and I feel very privileged to have had the chance to play so many great roles. Especially with those three characters, there are specific qualities that each character has that I admire and have tried to bring myself closer to. For Jasmine it is her strength and ability to speak her mind, for Ella I loved that she always had the courage to be kind even when it wasn’t the easiest route, and I love
Shubshri
Kandiah talks theatre,
diversity, and all things ‘princessing’. that Belle is so fiercely caring and independent. Favourite role to play and why?
By PENELOPE PELECAS
I think my favourite role was Princess Jasmine. It was my first professional theatre role so that was extremely special. She was such a strong, wonderful character to get to play every night, the music was just a dream to sing, and the costumes were some of the most beautiful I’ve ever worn.
How does your Belle differ from the original?
I love how this reimagined version of Beauty and the Beast has been reworked for today’s audience. Belle no longer wears an apron for one thing, which I love! She also wears glasses when she reads. One day I looked into the audience at the end of the show, and I saw a young girl in her yellow Belle dress with her glasses on, and I thought, this is for you.
Why do you think it’s important for Australian musical theatre to embrace diversity in casting? It’s important because it reflects the world and the Australia that we currently live in. Whether it’s ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or neuro diversity, it’s so important to feel seen and be included.
Who was your favourite Disney princess growing up?
I didn’t have a favourite, but I was a big Disney girl and there were so many films and characters that I just loved – Ariel, Mulan, Pocahontas to name just a few.
Do you have a favourite scene?
I love my scenes with Maurice mainly because I love working with ‘Dobbo’ (Rodney Dobson). I love the father-daughter relationship we’ve created, and those scenes are always so fun and easy with him.
What inspired you to pursue a career in musical theatre?
I grew up loving performing. I was introduced to dance and song at a very young age but found musical theatre at school. The first musical I did was in primary school, and it was Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. After that I started singing lessons and then it was a progression into joining all my high school choirs, performing in the school musicals, and choosing to take music and drama as school subjects.
What are your interests outside of theatre?
Yes, I’m a bit of a nana! I love gardening and spending time outside. I love going on little hikes and walks. And I love winding down after a show with a great book.
What’s next for you?
After we finish up in Brisbane, we are off to Melbourne and I’m very excited about that. As for after, who knows! But that’s also the joy of being a performer and never knowing what’s around the corner.

CITYto SERENITY
By KIRI JOHNSTON
Escape city life with a scenic retreat to Highgrove Farm – a haven of nature, animals, and relaxation.
As a city girl at heart, I thrive on urban life. Yet, every now and then, I crave the great Aussie outdoors – a breath of fresh air and a quiet space to reflect and reconnect after a busy week at work. That’s why my partner and I recently escaped to Mount Mee.
Just over an hour drive from Brisbane, this serene location offers lush forestry, rolling green pastures, with views of the Glasshouse Mountains putting on a show. Our destination was Highgrove Farm, a picturesque property featuring a cosy Airbnb cottage nestled atop 46 acres of lush mountainous scenery.
Upon arrival, we dropped our bags and explored the property, greeting the friendly residents that inhabit the land, including the most majestic Highland cows and Icelandic ponies – a highlight you don’t see every day.
As the evening rolled in, a misty haze added to the magic. We lit up the fireplace, prepared dinner, and nestled ourselves on the couch to watch movies. Later, we visited the outdoor bathhouse – a haven with a tub full of bubbles and a fireplace for extra warmth under the stars. That night, I slept like a log. The combination of a big comfy bed and peaceful surroundings made for the ultimate night of rest.
Our stay not only consisted of patting every animal we could find but also simply reconnecting with nature, allowing us a tranquil escape from the urban grind and immersing ourselves in an environment where life follows a gentler rhythm, which is said to offer a profound effect on overall wellbeing. It’s a holistic health boost, allowing you to recharge and rejuvenate completely.
The cottage is fully equipped for everything you need, whether it’s an overnight or long stay. But there’s plenty to explore in the area. Head down the road to Bronnie’s coffee stand for specialty coffee, dine out at Birches Restaurant, take a freshwater dip at Rocky Hole, try the local vino at Ocean View Estates, or go for a hike through D’Aguilar National Park to soak up the woodland with a view.
I recommend packing a pair of boots or wellies to get around the property and leaving your best kit at home if you plan on spending time with the animals. Just like the residents, you can roam freely around the farm and enjoy everything it has to offer. I’m already plotting my next getaway to enjoy the landscapes up there a little longer.

@WELLNESSWJ
Once sentence to introduce yourself:
I love all things wellness, teaching yoga to girlies, having deep conversations, and navigating the journey of motherhood.
Drink of choice:
Lately I’ve been obsessed with watermelon Hydralyte (it saved me when I was breastfeeding).
Go-to Aussie designer:
Activewear is my uniform so I’m going to say Lululemon.
Signature scent:
Le Labo Santal 33
Instant pick-me-up
Moving my body to a beautiful playlist.
Next bucket list holiday:
I’ve always wanted to visit Hawaii.
On Sunday, you’ll find me... Normally near the beach with my family.
Can’t-put-down read:
The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma.
What’s the last thing you binge watched?
Nine Perfect Strangers.
Who or what is your biggest influence?
Feeling abundant, peaceful, and content all at the same time, as often as possible.
Where do you seek inspiration?
I’m surrounded by so many incredible women who inspire me – the females in my family, the girls who come to my classes, queens I work with or know of… they all inspire me endlessly.
What are you most proud of?
As a new mum I think there’s so much to be proud of everyday, the growth, the constant challenges, the evolution. I go to bed most nights so proud of this new version of myself.
Last time you really laughed:
This morning, with my son. He’s started making the most heart-melting and hilarious noises.
Best career advice you’ve ever received:
Know your why and the rest will follow.
