love the manner in which an issue of Style Magazines comes together, how we work with a team to bring our vision to life and how choosing to follow a simple direction changes the game each month. For this month’s cover, we stepped into the fashion arena with Westfield Queensland to show how personal style is so much more than the latest fashion trends. #OwnYourStory is all about embracing individuality and expressing yourself. Every person in the world has overcome something in their personal journey. Even if you’re not a fashionista, you can use your wardrobe to tell your story and express your individuality. Be proud of your identity, because being different is beautiful. It can be tempting to think that the frivolous side of fashion is irrelevant, but when you look at how it can express someone’s personal journey, it becomes much more important. In this issue, we celebrate the best of winter headwear and trans-seasonal dressing for the Queensland climate. We also chat to the creatives and bloggers we have fallen in love with. As Mother’s Day looms large, we show our appreciation and love for the most important women in our lives with a piece straight from the heart. I hope you’ll find the pages of this edition brimming with ideas and inspiration to help you live the life you choose. You can be anything you want to be. Welcome to April...

NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL Kat the Label is attracting heaps of social media attention for stocking some of the most gorgeous little lacies on the market. The philosophy behind their brand is that lingerie should be affordable, and should be bought just for you – not for anyone else. Their super soft bralettes are too cute to not peek out under a sheer or cut-out top. KATTHELABEL.COM
WE LOVE While the calendar may have officially welcomed autumn, we don’t have to stop dreaming about balmy summer days. This month I’ve taken inspo from the easygoing, vibrant charm of Mexico. I’m taking a little warmth into the new season with an earthy colour palette – think terracotta, burnt orange, forest greens and hints of bronze.
CITY FRINGE I ADORE THIS COMBINATION OF SUEDE AND BURNT ORANGE – THE TWO TOGETHER CREATE A SHOW-STOPPING STRAPPY HEEL. THE STRAPS ARE VERY ON-TREND RIGHT NOW AND THE TASSELS ADD AN EDGY TOUCH, WHILE THE BLOCK HEEL WILL TAKE YOU FROM DAY TO NIGHT WITH EASE!

STAR TER S To celebrate Mother’s Day, we take a look at the inspiring mums of the Style Magazines office.
KIRI JOHNSTON AND TRACY SINCLAIR (JOHNSTON)
CHRISTIE AND KELLY SUTHERLAND What has your mum taught you? Christie: Being the inspiration that she is to me, she taught me lessons in real-life situations. She let me push boundaries and let me learn and was there to hold my hand if I ever needed her. I think my mum gave me my independence. What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from your mum? Christie: Be you because you are imperfectly perfect. Never back down. Strive to be the best version of yourself. I learnt that nothing is ever too big for me to tackle. What are your similarities? Christie: We definitely don’t look alike but I hope I share her youthful genes deep down. My mum is happy, optimistic, clever and a realist. I hope I share her love of life and her generous nature What’s your favourite thing to do together? Christie: We love to shop together! Mum gave me my love of fashion. She’s the one who kickstarted my passion and the one who led me into the career that I love. I really admire how she sees things for their potential rather than the things that could go wrong and how she takes risks with her style and completely owns all that she does. 14
“SHE WORKS HARD, HAS ENDLESS ENERGY, SEES THE FUNNY SIDE OF EVERYTHING AND ALWAYS BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN PEOPLE.”
What is a special moment you’ve shared with your mum? Kiri: Heaps of things come to mind, but whenever we travel to New Zealand (where Mum is from), we have the best time. We visit our family in Auckland and in Coromandel, where my grandmother grew up. It’s always nice seeing Mum with her dad, brother and sister. We do simple things like go to the beach to eat fish and chips and spend time with cousins. It’s pretty chilled and the best time to hear stories of Mum’s childhood. What life lessons has she taught you? Kiri: She’s always worked full-time and she started Style Magazines when my brothers and I were young, so she’s taught us through her business that it’s important to work hard but still make time to have fun. I’ve learned from mum that if you have a job you love, it’s not really work. What was the best piece of advice you’ve received from your mum? Kiri: Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks of you; do your thing and be yourself. Even when you aren’t feeling particularly confident, carry yourself confidently and you’ll be OK. What are your similarities? Kiri: People say I look like my mum. We both love a laugh, and we laugh a lot when we’re together. We like paying each other out (and other people). We both love shopping. Now that I’m working with Mum, I realise that we have a similar way of working. We both love animals; we’re dog crazy. Every time we see a dog on the side of the road, we nearly crash the car ’cause we’re too busy checking out the dog. Oh, and we both snort when we laugh! What do you admire about your mum? Kiri: She is always positive, has endless energy, tries to see the funny side of everything and she always brings out the best in people. APRIL16
HANNAH DOODY AND JENNIFER BAKER What is a special moment you’ve shared with your mum? Hannah: Our family spent four years living in the UK when I was in high school, so I have many great memories from that time. One that really stands out was when we travelled to Scotland and stayed in a lighthouse in the Isle of Skye. One evening, Mum and I sat together by the cliff, chatting and laughing as we watched the sun go down. What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from your mum? Hannah: If doing something scares you, then it’s probably worth doing. That advice has inspired me to travel the world and experience different cultures and locations that have made my life richer. My mum always backs me when I take some crazy chance and I really appreciate that about her. I don’t know what I would do without her constant love and support.
WE MUMS T R A HE What makes your mum unique? Hannah: Mum has a quirky sense of humour, which I actually found super embarrassing when I was young. But I’ve grown to love it and it’s now one of my favourite things about her. What do you admire about your mum? Hannah: She is incredibly brave and inconceivably generous. Also, she is pretty much a walking medical encyclopedia and she can stack a dishwasher like nobody’s business! What are your similarities? Hannah: People always say we look alike. We definitely share a sense of humour, and I constantly find myself using all her old sayings!
CANDICE AND KIM JACKSON What is a special moment you’ve shared with your mum? Candice: I remember helping Mum cook in the kitchen a lot. She’d always let me lick the spoon (or bowl) and put my own pastry designs on pies! What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from your mum? Candice: To take every opportunity that comes your way, even if it scares you. What makes your mum unique? Candice: She’s mothered five amazing kids (myself included), and is supportive of all of our dreams and aspirations. She can be tough, but she’s always fair. And as long as we’re happy, she’s happy. What do you admire about your mum? Candice: She is such a hard worker and is driven in everything she does. Even when she’s super busy or stressed, she’ll still make time to put aside her own workload to help you with what you need. She always puts other people ahead of herself. What are your similarities? Candice: Growing up, we were both into cross country running. She was better than me, though – without a doubt! We’re both a bit kooky and love to laugh. Her laugh is contagious. What’s your favourite thing to do together? Candice: I love every moment with my mum, but some of my favourite memories are made when the whole family is together and we’re playing board games, on holiday or doing something exciting together. stylemagazines.com.au

ONLINE ACTIVISM CAMPAIGNS SUCH AS #ASKHERMORE, #HEFORSHE AND GOOGLE’S #ONEDAYIWILL ARE STRONG TOOLS WHEN IT COMES TO FUELLING DISCUSSIONS.
HOW FAR WE’VE COME After International Women’s Day, Hannah Doody explores how social media can help us achieve gender equality. EVERY YEAR ON March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day. While the celebration may only be a blip on the radar for some, the conversation and state of world affairs makes this day more important than ever before. What started as a socialist day of celebration in 1909 New York is now a global affair that truly showcases the achievements of women. From Michelle Payne becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup to Malala Yousafazai becoming the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate, female achievements in the last few years have been pretty remarkable. Scrolling through Facebook on International Women’s Day, the momentum around the topic filled me with optimism. More specifically, I was in awe of the amount of men on my feed who were supportive about gender equality. “Whether it’s on the bus, in the lunchroom or at home, this is a topic that needs more awareness,” one said. Another wrote that he would honestly be lost if 16
it weren’t for the many amazing women who have influenced his life. This comment really struck a chord with me and made me realise the role social media plays in propelling these discussions into the public forum. The opportunities that social media presents for gender equality are endless. Elisa Camahort Page, founder of online community BlogHer, which inspires women to create and explore their passions, says that social media and online activism campaigns such as #AskHerMore, #HeForShe and Google’s #OneDayIWill are strong tools when it comes to fuelling discussions. She says the campaigns that have the most staying power and are the most effective are ones with deeper meanings. “People can make fun of armchair activism and hashtag activism, but it does open eyes and change minds,” says Elisa. She says these online campaigns are partially responsible for shining a spotlight on feminism and helping people to understand the fundamentals.
“Anytime something becomes more mainstream, there are two things that drive it: one is a business imperative, and the other is when people won’t shut up about it.” Elisa also points out that social media has a wider impact than we might realise. “It has helped us tell the people who are advertising or creating content what we want to see,” she says. While social media might be a double-edged sword, on International Women’s Day this year, I saw it foster meaningful and important discussions. We still have many hills to climb before reaching gender equality, but we now have a way to shed light on social inequalities and stimulate discussion with the broader community. If we want to be the change we wish to see in the world, social media is the perfect place to start. APRIL16

According to Mr Whimpey, “The 2016 Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival will again deliver decadent food, extravagant fashion and lavish décor that will appeal to a wide range of racegoers.” Mr Whimpey says the Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival is the centrepiece of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. “It’s so popular because it perfectly blends pride, prestige and tradition with entertainment, fashion, first-class hospitality and heart-stopping action.” This year marks the historic return to the newlydeveloped track at Eagle Farm Racecourse for Treasury Casino & Hotel Ladies’ Oaks Day on June 4

UNITA GROUP STARTED OUT WITH JUST ONE RED UTE AND A LOT OF HARD WORK. NOW, THE COMPANY EMPLOYS MORE THAN 250 PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND IS STILL GOING STRONG.
BUSINESS MAKES BOLD MOVES Unita Group’s growth proves that the key to success is boldness and a commitment to making a difference in the industry. ROB ROWE HAS a reputation for doing things differently; with predicted growth for the company and some major developments underway, the founder and managing director of Unita Group is on the move with his team. Unita Group is comprised of nine Brisbanebased enterprises, including Tu Projects, a national market leader and the largest interiors fit-out business in Brisbane. Through its affiliates, Unita Group offers a variety of property services from shopfitting to joinery and steelwork. The company has had an incredible trajectory in recent years, resulting in consolidated group revenues of just under $100 million, all from right here in Brisbane. Rob says that he’s blown away by the achievement; the business started out with just one red ute and a lot of hard work. Now, the company employs more than 250 people across the country and is still going strong. 18
In true Unita fashion, the new location at the Pellicano development in Woolloongabba is set to be cutting-edge and unrivalled in the market. Tu Projects is also building the laneway, public spaces and some of the restaurant and retail premises on the ground floor. From the very beginning, Rob has been passionate about creating a solid company that builds incredible and long-lasting businesses and brands for its clients. Unita Group’s new premises is set to play an important role in the continued realisation of this dream. “The new premises will showcase all of our abilities in the laneway itself and our own offices,” says Rob. “I hope it will signal our commitment to continued growth for our trades, clients and the larger market. It’s an exciting time.” Ryll Burgin-Doyle, the newly-appointed CEO of Unita Group, explains that growing pains are to be expected for such quick expansion with
any company of this size. In order to make the transition as seamless as possible, the Unita Group is relying on a combination of senior professionals and strong processes to deliver the same level of quality to its clients. Rob Rowe, Ryll Burgin-Doyle and in-house developer Cameron Blacker have also partnered in a new software venture. The team will soon be commercialising Unita Group’s best-kept secret: its own proprietary technology, which has been 10 years in the making. According to Unita Group, there’s nothing like this software on the market. It will be a “complete game-changer”. With the relocation and release of proprietary technology, there’s no doubt that 2016 will be Unita Group’s biggest year yet. UNITA GROUP P 1300 659 399 UNITA.COM.AU

DESERT WANDERER
The ethical brand has wholeheartedly embraced the boho fashion revival.
An Aussie fashion label is launching a new collection of Autumn/Winter threads for the modern bohemian. FIGHT FOR A VOICE Chelsea Stutchbury tells Style about being diagnosed with cancer at age 17, finding her voice and releasing her debut single, Vincristine. FOR MOST HIGH school students, good grades and invites to the hottest parties are common concerns. But not for Chelsea Stutchbury. During her final year of high school in Bundaberg, Chelsea was diagnosed with lymphoma – cancer of the lymphatic system. Chelsea says the news shattered her, and was especially hard to bear as it came during the most important year of school. “The first sign that something was wrong was the night of my 17th birthday, when I came home with swollen ankles,” says Chelsea. “I was supposed to be figuring out what I wanted to study at uni and working hard to get the best OP score I could, but that all became the least of my worries.”
ow Vincristinleethisronugh availab ic. Hear it for Sony Msueslf on iTunes your Spotify. and But Chelsea chose to take it all in her stride and work hard to deal with what life had thrown at her. Taking a positive attitude towards her chemotherapy regimen, she continued to pursue her dream of being a singer by studying Jazz Voice at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Chelsea has now released her debut single, Vincristine, which is named after a medication she required for her chemotherapy battle. One of the
side effects of the treatment Chelsea experienced was hoarseness of voice: Vincristine explores her fear of whether her singing voice – her most precious gift – would return. “When I was at my worst in hospital, my lungs were close to three quarters filled with fluid so it’s taken time to get them working like a singer’s lungs should,” Chelsea says. “It feels great to sing; I feel like me again.”

BRISBANE SUITS UP
LOVE IT!
Lads, get ready to bring your suit game up a notch! MENSWEAR BRAND JACK London opened the doors to its first Brisbane standalone store at Wintergarden in late February and it’s already packing a punch. The Melbourne brand’s signature look of rock ‘n’ roll attitude mixed with classic tailoring is inspired by the British and European mod rocker scene of the 1960s. This edgy appeal has struck a chord with the general public and the range has taken residency in men’s wardrobes all over the country. So what’s the recipe for success? Add one part rocker attitude, two parts sharp tailoring and mix in a pinch of simple elegance. Finish with a dash of testosterone and pour over the rocks for a taste of timeless menswear. The new store in the Wintergarden Precinct now gives Brisbane customers the opportunity to view the full collection just in time for the season

THE CLASSIC WATCH IS SLIMMER THAN A SWISS DESIGN, USES QUARTZ TECHNOLOGY, HAS A SECOND HAND, AND INCLUDES A COMPLIMENTARY LEATHER TRAVEL CASE AND AN EXTRA CASUAL STRAP.
CLOCK ON The search for the perfect watch inspired Brisbane-born Chris Pilton to create his own and launch his business, DeMontbrayPilton. A PROJECT MANAGER and engineer by trade, Chris Pilton loves watches. “I have collected several rather nice ones over the years,” he says. “But in my collection I didn’t have the ‘perfect’ watch for every occasion. I’m big on solving problems, so I set about making myself the perfect watch.” The company’s website officially went live in January of this year, following a Facebook teaser campaign leading up to the launch. The first design available for purchase is the Classic, in gold or silver. This narrow focus is a promising indicator that Chris is set to favour quality over quantity in business. So how does DeMontbrayPilton compare to the other giants in the watch world? The Classic watch is slimmer than a Swiss design, uses quartz
technology and even includes a second hand. Each watch purchased includes a complimentary leather travel case and an extra casual strap. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the ability to alternate straps, with the Classic’s attractive unisex design appealing to a wide variety of customers. Though the Classic watch costs only $250, Chris personally ensures the quality of each timepiece. “The components of the watch are shipped to me in Brisbane,” says Chris. “I pop my white cotton gloves on, make sure everything is perfect,
set the time to wherever the watch is heading, write a personalised note to our customers and send off by express post.” This attentive and personalised approach to customer service has seen DeMontbrayPilton receive positive international attention and gain nearly 20,000 Instagram followers within a week of the account’s creation. If you’ve been searching for the perfect watch, turn your attention to DeMontbrayPilton for exceptional service and stunning design. DEMONTBRAYPILTON.COM

H&M IS JOINING forces with artist and singer M.I.A for their latest global initiative World Recycle Week, aiming to collect 1,000 tonnes of unwanted and worn out garments from customers worldwide in its more than 3,600 stores. To raise awareness, music video queen M.I.A. has filmed an exclusive new music clip for H&M highlighting the environmental impact of clothes going to landfills around the world and is set to debut on the H&M website on April 11. Taking the phenomenon of haul videos - a clip that shows how many items and how much a person has spent on a shopping spree- and putting their own recycling spin on it, bloggers and characters from M.I.A.’s film clip will record ‘rehaul’ videos showing the pieces they will recycle through the H&M Garment stylemagazines.com.au

ONE OF THE best things about the change of seasons is seeing what the designers have in store for us. Morgan Braithwaite, an interior styling guru with one of the coolest jobs around, says there are plenty of ways to incorporate a simple, transseasonal style into your home. “Layering textured materials and neutral shades brings interest, warmth and depth to a room,” Morgan says. “Incorporate some of your summer style into the winter scene with rattan and wicker looks and continue to layer with knitted greys, textured rugs and knitted throws.” Morgan says bright summery whites will be replaced by moody, dark tones and more masculine interiors. 28
“Try complementing a grey colour scheme with different shades of navy, deep midnight blue, indigo and even peacock to give it a fresh burst of colour,” Morgan says. “Wine tones will also be popular – pair them with pastel pinks, shades of grey and metallics to add depth and sophistication.” Sometimes all you need is a fresh eye, and Morgan is now available for complimentary styling sessions to help you create the perfect interior space. ARE YOU ADDICTED TO TECH? Is social media your drug? New research shows it can have similar effects and symptoms to other harmful addictions, writes Candice Jackson. A THIRD OF the world uses social media. And recent research has shown that excessive social media can have damaging effects on the brain, similar to drug or gambling addictions. If you use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat or Pinterest, you may have exhibited one (if not ALL) of these five signs of having a psychological addiction to social media: WITHDRAWALS Have you ever felt your phone vibrate or heard it beep when nothing was there? This sensation is called “phantom vibrations”. It’s your brain’s way of feeding your addiction. ATTACHMENT Do notifications give you a sense of satisfaction? A social media addiction can release dopamine to your brain’s reward centre. As a result, you’ll want to post more or check back frequently to continue getting that happy high.
DEPENDENCY Does scrolling through your feeds before you’ve even rolled out of bed help you function in the morning? If you feel like social media can wake you up more than a shower or a coffee, you might have some dependency issues. ANXIETY Does leaving your phone at home or having no reception make you downright uneasy or give you serious FOMO? OVERUSE When you’re addicted to social media, you could be spending up to four hours on it per day without even realising! How many times do you open your apps each day? Can you relate to these common addictive behaviours? We explore the effects of a social media addiction on your brain and how you can detox the digital drug in our full story online!

MICHAEL ZAVROS – A FAMILY AFFAIR One of Australia’s most prized artists, Michael Zavros speaks with Caitlyn Spanner about his extraordinary career and family influences. The Poodle
A DAY IN the Zavros household starts much the same as your own: manic but ordered. Michael and wife Alison rise early with their three children to feed their farm animals, make lunches, share big breakfasts and get ready for school. Once the kids leave for school, Michael will begin painting, drawing or sculpting in his studio and continue until well after dark. Born in 1974, Michael grew up knowing he was destined to be an artist. “As a child, I loved to draw and was good at it,” he says. “Nobody asked what I would be when I grew up. I was just this thing: ‘an artist’.” Since then, Michael’s hyperrealistic style of art has won him countless awards, from the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize to The Archibald Prize. His personal career highlight, however, was his first solo exhibition in the US at Art Los Angeles Contemporary just months ago. Michael spends hours, days and even months perfecting his pieces. “I was always good at recording what was in front of me,” he says, “a visual retention from what I was seeing down to my fingertips and creating the illusion of reality on a canvas is certainly one kind of end point.” Taking inspiration from everything, Michael says 34
he was surprised by how much his family and specifically his children began to influence his work. “My work now exists as a kind of performance between what I make and how I make it, what my life looks like and what is happening in our lives,” he says. One of his artworks depicting the death of his daughter, Phoebe, won him the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. “At the time I was losing sleep worrying about Phoebe and her little sister – those anxieties all parents have about losing their kids. Painting Phoebe as if she was dead seemed the perfect way to articulate this paternal love and to confront this anxiety. Of course, Phoebe is only playing dead (as children do) and her cheeks are still rosy.” Michael’s wife, Alison, is also heavily involved in the Brisbane art scene, but he says they prefer to concentrate more on their lives when they are at home with their children. With six paintings currently featured in the Adelaide Biennial Magic Object exhibition at Art Gallery of South Australia and upcoming exhibitions commissioned portraits in the making, Michael’s career is going from strength to strength. Michael recommends that locals check out the fast-growing Brisbane art scene.
“QAGOMA is the envy of every state museum and Queensland Ballet rivals The Australian Ballet now,” he says. “Our university museums are excellent and the new Museum of Brisbane is a new jewel.” Take Michael’s advice and experience some local art; there’s something for everyone in the booming Cultural Centre in South Brisbane. #OWNYOURSTORY Creative, confident and playful: the Westfield stylists share their stories.
IF YOU COULD go back in time, what would you change? You might be brimming with advice about your love life, education or financial position, but what about your personal style? Editor Christie Sutherland sat down with some of Westfield Queensland’s in-house stylists to find out what has influenced their style, and what advice they would give their younger selves. So what is “style”? It’s an elusive concept and everyone has a different interpretation. But one thing is clear: style isn’t just someone’s outer appearance. It’s more character than clothes, more attitude than affluence. It’s all about making your inner self visible to the world. In the words of Diane von Fürstenberg, “Style is something each of us already has, all we need to do is find it.” As you grew up, did you ever notice that your style was influenced by your favourite singer, movie or book character or group of friends? Style is inherently influenced by our individual life experiences and surroundings. It’s true that there is beauty in hindsight, and when we look back on our younger selves it’s common to see the things we cherish as well as the things we wish we could change. Westfield stylist Jules Jackson says her advice to her younger self would be to always be yourself and not to take yourself too seriously. “The pressure on young women can be enormous and I remember, at times, feeling judged or like I should conform,” Jules says. “But overall I had a good sense of self that allowed me to make choices that made me happy.” Reflecting on her childhood, Annabel Falco says that she was always fearless in the name of fashion, and never afraid to explore new trends or trial fleeting fashion fads. “But sometimes I wish I hadn’t explored every trend so publicly and stuck to what was a little more ‘me’,” Annabel admits. The Westfield stylists make a living out of
36
being impeccably stylish but (believe it or not!) they have all suffered a cringe-worthy fashion faux pas at some point. Molly King was a victim of bright neon colours, while Letitia Gaskell’s low-rise jeans and kitten heels still haunt her. “At least they provided some absolutely hilarious fashion moments to look back on!” Jules laughs. When shopping for the new season, Molly King says it’s best to buy strategically. “Don’t send yourself broke by buying a whole new wardrobe,” says Molly. “I like to pair older jackets and washed-out jeans with a new pair of boots. Vintage shopping is fun for winter.”
“BUT SOMETIMES I WISH I HADN’T EXPLORED EVERY TREND SO PUBLICLY AND STUCK TO WHAT WAS A LITTLE MORE ‘ME’.” Letitia says that Autumn/Winter is all about classic shapes such as structured white shirts, midilength skirts and tailored trousers, while Annabel’s advice is to invest in bright jackets, a pair of statement shoes, and experiment with interesting layering techniques. Have you ever found your wardrobe dull and uninspiring? Do you feel like you can never find the clothes you’re looking for? Maybe you’d just like an objective opinion? Clothes are about making you feel amazing, and this Autumn/Winter, Westfield’s in-house stylists can help do just that. Book in with a stylist today at your favourite Westfield centre for a fun shopping experience that will help you embrace your natural beauty and unearth your individuality. WESTFIELD.COM.AU

GIRL ON FIRE From the runway to street style, there’s a new must-have accessory in town. This season, no outfit is complete without head-turning confidence. Here are our favourite bold looks for Autumn/Winter.
1. BANG-BANG
2. MILLION DOLLAR BABY
3. IN LINE
With the change of the season comes that overdue hair appointment, and as we slowly but surely slip into the cooler months, there’s no better time to opt for a confidence-boosting chop. Lash-skimming bangs, the cool-girl bob and above-the-shoulder blunt crops are the best excuses for a little hair TLC.
Our favourite childhood trend, braided pigtails, is packing a punch this season and we can’t get enough! This effortless hairstyle has been making waves in the fashion world, even appearing at recent Fashion Weeks. Wear them loose or tight and they’ll take your outfit from day to night!
Having a fresh manicure can make anyone feel a million bucks and this season it’s all about block colours and fine lines. We’re loving the look of matte white with a single fine line down the left side of each nail, or clear polish with a bold colour line at the tip.
4. LESS IS MORE
5. FIZZY FACE
6. OIL SLICK
When it comes to makeup and hair, the “less is more” approach never fails. Whether you’re sporting a fresh cut or loose long waves, a soft blow-out is essential. For makeup, think curling natural lashes with a coat of mascara and giving the eyes, cheeks and lips a healthy pink flush. A spritz of perfume and you’re good to go!
Ever dreamt of leaving the house makeup-free with a healthy complexion without the expense of top shelf products? Well, why not give the carbonated water facial a go? This effervescent face-firming trend, made popular in Japan, is said to remove dead skin cells, purify the pores and even give the skin a burst of oxygen with every bubble.
Nothing says sophistication like a dark glamorous lip and slicked-back hair! This season the runways proved that punk’s not dead. The ultimate trick to this trend is to layer up on shine! Apply your lippy twice – mattifying with a tissue – then lacquer on the gloss. And for your locks, use a sleek mousse or spray to tame the game.

Brisbane’s creative scene is continually on the rise, and in particular, the fashion scene..

THE NEXT GENERATION
Hannah Dalglish’s graduate collection
All eyes are on Australia’s emerging fashion designers, writes Gabbi Briner. THE AUSTRALIAN FASHION industry has suffered a startling loss in recent years, with the closure of Collette Dinnigan, Lisa Ho, Josh Goot and Kirrily Johnston boutiques, and the shock cancellation of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane. Until now. Brisbane’s creative scene is continually on the rise, and in particular, the fashion scene is swarming with a new crop of young, driven designers whose cutting-edge ideas will go on to shape the future of Australian fashion. QUT graduate Hannah Dalglish has already made a profound impression with her use of handpainted fashion items as an avenue to explore memories and feelings. A standout piece from Hannah’s graduate collection was a floor-length hand-painted coat. Featured on ABC News, Brisbane-based blog Aesthetic Fixation and fashion magazine Frock Paper Scissors, the coat takes inspiration from Comme Des Garcons’ Flat collection. “Painting the coat was the best bit,” Hannah says. “The final painting on the front is actually an abstract depiction of one of my favourite spots in 46
New Zealand called Banks Peninsula. If you look closely at the front, you can see a smudgy row of poplar trees. “I repainted it three or four times until I finally arrived at the colour I wanted. I went crazy throwing paint and pushing it into the felt. The layers make it so heavy.” Arkie Barton, another QUT fashion graduate, is also turning heads in the fashion world. Her unique aesthetic is influenced by Indigenous Australian imagery, which she transforms by injecting vivid splashes of colour. Arkie has recently been selected to take part in QUT Creative Enterprise Australia’s intensive five-month fashion accelerator program. Only six applicants are selected to take part in the program, and five of these young entrepreneurs, including Arkie, are Brisbane-based. Arkie says that she will be focusing on developing her concept and the aesthetic of her label throughout the program. She hopes that her time with QUT Creative Enterprise Australia will help her to properly grasp the financial side of starting a fashion business

and help to get some of her creative ideas off the ground. The Australian fashion industry may be undergoing a paradigm shift, but with promising talent constantly emerging, it’s clear that will always be space for young designers with unique ideas to explore their creativity. APRIL16

• Try pieces such as A-line skirts, blouses with pussy bows, chunky shoes and, of course, over-the-top accessories. AUTUMNAL EVENT STYLING
THE A TO Z OF SKIN TAGS
BONJOURNO, AMALFI COAST!
HERE AT THE Styled Group, we love the approach of cool weather and the opportunity to give events a cosier and more intimate feel. From a styling perspective, warm, autumnal tones give spice to lounge settings, backdrops and centrepieces, not to mention the immense scope afforded by large-scale productions. Add interest with wall draping, cushion clusters, floor covering and some more unique elements – think giant trees with ombre foliage, festoon lighting and the glow of candlelight. Illuminated dry bars, display plinths and food and beverage settings can also work in a functional yet highly visual capacity, lending additional lighting to darker spaces. We love including unexpected extras such as knee rugs (casually draped on the backs of lounge chairs) or pashminas at wedding events for guests to help themselves. Thankfully, the days of hiring giant dowdy heaters for alfresco events are long gone. Now, fire pits, vertical and overhead heaters are readily available to heat up your next function.
SKIN TAGS, ALSO known as “acrochordons”, are small parts of hanging skin that tend to appear in areas where skin rubs against skin such as the eyelids, armpits, groin and neck. If you have a skin tag, don’t worry – about 46 per cent of people do so you’re not alone. Those who are pregnant, overweight or diabetic are more prone to skin tags. Usually harmless, most range in diameter from two millimetres to one centimetre, with some reaching up to five centimetres in diameter. If clothing or jewellery is continually rubbing against a skin tag, the area will become irritated and uncomfortable. If this happens, there are way to have the skin tag professionally removed: • Ligation: cuts off blood supply to the skin tag • Excision: skin tag is cut out • Cryosurgery: freezing with liquid nitrogen • Cauterisation: burnt off using electrolysis If you suffer from this condition, visit Integrity Paramedical Skin Practitioners; we are able to remove skin tags with minimal to no scarring.

IMPORTANCE OF SPECIFICATIONS
GO FOR GREEN SUBURBS
WHAT’S YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN?
THE TERM “PREMIUM quality paint” is commonplace on contractor-developed paint specifications. Unfortunately, overuse has undermined the term. Now, many medium-level paint products (including tier two brands of major paint manufacturers) also carry the term. When assessing a painting quote, it’s important to clarify what your painter means by “premium quality” to avoid a misunderstanding before you sign a contract. Each paint type has varying properties and, as such, can result in a differing number of necessary coats, the type of finish/colour and, ultimately, its longevity. To ensure you obtain a quote reflecting your needs, ask your painter to provide their preparation methods in detail, as well as specifying the actual products used and how many coats will be applied. If you obtain a specification directly from a manufacturer, exact paint types are listed as standard. This allows applicators to provide similar quotes, so you can understand them and choose your applicator more easily.
TREE-LINED STREETS AND leafy suburbs are visually pleasing, but did you know that they could add value to your property? Choosing a street with an abundance of lush green surroundings can improve visual appeal, potentially increasing the value of your property. Fortunately, Brisbane has a number of suburbs with statistically large amounts of tree cover. With tree cover at 41.37 per cent, St Lucia is the leader in greenery, closely followed by Bardon at 39.46 per cent and Indooroopilly at 35.97 per cent. The Gap and Ashgrove are neck and neck, with tree cover at 34.62 per cent and 34.25 per cent respectively. These suburbs are all located in Brisbane’s inner west, creating a beautiful green corridor. Real estate agents agree: a good streetscape can add up to 30 per cent to the price of a property. The overall verdict from property buyers is to buy from developers that have chosen streets with big, leafy trees, which will create a lasting contribution for the future.
THE AMOUNT OF people who wait for a white knight to fix their finances is astounding. Rather than altering their individual habits, some look to a partner to alleviate growing financial stress. There are so many resources out there to help you get out of debt, without having to rely on that second income. Here are three tips to get out of debt: • Own up to it. Sit down and work out exactly how much you owe and to whom. • Write it out. Work out a budget and see how much you can afford to pay back. Use this written budget as your debt buster plan • Get backup. If your quality of life is affected by your debt repayments, call a professional debt negotiator and ask them to get a better deal on your behalf. There may be a small one-off fee, but you will save more than that in interest charges alone. It’s time to take charge and get your finances under control. Don’t jeopardise your long-term financial happiness by waiting for someone else to swoop in and save you.

You may also discover that your pieces are worth a lot more than you previously thought. Remodelling jewellery, especially when done by a reputable jeweller, can add a lot of value to the piece. Jewellery doesn’t belong in a drawer! Gather it up and visit us for a complimentary design consultation to see how we can help you create something amazing from your unworn pieces. You never know – you could discover thousands of dollars in value!
AT PDPR, THERE’S nothing we love better than working with clients to bring two brands together. Be it a luxury car dealer and a bespoke beverage brand or a health food company and an activewear label, collaboration will often yield the best results for all involved. In addition to doubling your marketing research, collaborative partnerships can also help to minimise advertising costs and other associated expenses. When looking to work with another company, consider your end user – who are they and what do they want from you? Will the collaboration provide an additional service or a more complete end result? Remember to look for a business with a similar ethic, outlook or vibe to your own, as this natural synergy will usually provide an easier, more rewarding path for everyone involved. Whether it’s to produce an event, foster advertising, create a sponsorship deal or undertake a new venture, a collaboration could be the solution you’ve been looking for.
I WAS RECENTLY reminded of the Seinfeld episode where George walks into the diner, exclaiming his life is a disaster and a big fat joke. He decides to do the exact opposite of what he would ordinarily do in the hopes this might kickstart a better life. He orders the opposite of his usual lunch and a chain of events unfolds that leads to him dating a gorgeous girl he thought he couldn’t land. In reality, there is some truth to this concept. When innovators are trying to discover a new idea, this is a tactic they use. Picasso’s most famous artwork was a result of straying from traditional trends, and Steve Jobs’ decision to have just one home button on the iPhone changed the face of mobile technology. Something simple like changing a lunch order or responding differently to a colleague might lead to a whole bevy of new opportunities. The more you open yourself up to seeing things differently, the more synapses in your brain fire! Try this tactic for just for one day and see what changes you could make to your life.

HOSTING EVENTS IN TENTS
HOW TO MAXIMISE INVESTMENT
EYESIGHT MYTHS BUSTED
WHEN IT COMES to hosting an event, everyone wants that “wow” factor to give their guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A marquee provides the ultimate blank canvas, allowing you to create your ideal event in any location – in your backyard, a rural property, or the beach. If you can imagine it, we can build it! We’ve built thousands of structures for personal celebrations as well as large-scale corporate events. Here are a few points to keep in mind when considering hiring a marquee: Budget and planning: Be realistic about your budget and ensure you factor in all expenses. Service: Use a company that has quality equipment and structures, exceptional service, is reliable and understands your vision. Leverage off their network: A marquee provider who collaborates with the industry’s top wedding planners, caterers and stylists is key. Reputation: Work alongside the biggest brands, festivals and service provider names in the industry. This will help to emphasise the trust and accountability of a business.
INVESTING IN PROPERTY can be daunting, especially for beginners. You need to ensure you’re getting the best return from your investment. Here are some tips to remember: • Find the right property: Know your budget and stick to it – think with your head, not your heart. Research the neighbourhood and understand the current climate, trends and future predictions by consulting a professional. • Know your numbers: Rates, body corporate, repairs and maintenance costs all factor in. • Think long-term: Property is an investment and if you’re looking to make fast money, it is probably not for you. • Get your loan structure right: There are more loan varieties today than ever before and finding the right one for you is key. • Find a good property manager: They will assist you in getting the most from your investment. Chat to a Ray White property specialist today about how you can start making your property dreams become a reality.
KNOWING HOW TO take good care of your eyes is the first step to protecting your sight for life. We hear all kinds of eyesight myths – some are harmless, but some can be more damaging. Here are a few harmless myths that you’ve probably heard about: • Looking at a computer screen can damage your eyes. • Sitting too close to the TV will ruin your vision. • Reading in dim light is bad for your eyes. • Eating carrots will improve your vision (it probably won’t!) Unfortunately, other myths can be harmful, such as the belief that children will outgrow a lazy eye or that there is nothing you can do about vision problems as you age (there is). So if you’ve ever wondered whether wearing spectacles will weaken your vision, or if you can do anything to help prevent vision loss, we can help to answer any questions you might have. We recommend an eye check-up at least once a year to help you debunk the myths and learn the truth about your eyes and vision.

UNWANTED SUITS?
WINDS OF CHANGE
LIVING BY THE BAY
ARE YOUR OLDER suits being crowded out of the wardrobe by new arrivals? Brisbane’s Suit of Change program asks men to donate unwanted suits in good condition to those less fortunate. A suit that you haven’t worn in years could be the key to helping someone feel confident enough to secure a job and turn their life around. Since launching last year, Suit of Change has received over 3000 garments to assist unemployed men, refugees and the homeless. We hope to increase this number through Suit of Change Day, which will be held on May 19 this year. Professionals can bring any unwanted suits, shirts, ties, trousers, belts and shoes to drop-off points, with the major collection point in the foyer at 111 Eagle Street. This year, Australis College is kindly donating scholarships to assist in further educating these unemployed men. Dressed to impress and equipped appmen could see the start of a new era all thanks to your donation to Suit of Change. Read the full story at suitofchange.com.
WHILE AUTUMN IS the season of change, this change is not easy or for the fainthearted. Feelings of anxiety and confusion are often signs that some changes need to be made But unless we are willing to address our fear of change, we cannot make new ground or find any sustainable enjoyment. What changes do you need to make this month? What fears are preventing you from making them? Do you need to be kinder and more compassionate to yourself and others? Perhaps you need to listen to and honour your appetite for food and sex with more integrity. Maybe you need to master the art of calm assertion and eliminate passive-aggressive tendencies. In order to face your fears, you must first learn self-respect and self-love. Live with integrity and embrace a heartfelt commitment to facing your fears head-on. When the winds of change blow your fears around this season, you need to ask yourself one question: will you build walls or windmills?
WHEN PEOPLE FIRST visit Sandgate, they feel like they’ve discovered all there is to know. They bring their family, move in, and set up shop. Three quarters of the homes we sold in the last 12 months at Jim McKeering Real Estate were sold to people from outside the postcode 4017. With a history as a popular bayside town, Sandgate served as the CBD of Brisbane’s northern suburbs. As large shopping centres have changed the face of this village, it has taken time for Sandgate to find its identity again. But now, Sandgate has evolved into an eclectic hub of boutique shops, cafés, pubs and bars loved and owned by the locals. In addition to the stunning location, bayside sports and available activities such as kite surfing, sailing and kayaking have been attracting crowds of all types: artists and sport fanatics, young families and singles. Only 30 minutes from the Brisbane CBD, the nearby tunnels and motorways also give Sandgate locals easy access to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

STYLE | MOTHER’S DAY
YOU GOT THIS Her first Mother’s Day is only a blink away! Make your partner’s day one to remember with a special game plan. SHE’S PROBABLY WRAPPED up in the new addition to your family and that precious bundle of joy might be the best present in the world. But since she’s braved pregnancy and childbirth, you are the second in command on the battlefield that is parenthood. Your mission: create an amazing Mother’s Day. If you need a couple of hints on how to pamper, never fear: we’ve pulled together some of our favourite ideas to get the inspiration flowing.
LIGHTEN HER LOAD Treat your partner to a chore-free day! Whether you choose to take on the workload yourself or hire someone to do the dirty work for you, it’s the little things that count.
PUT IT IN WRITING Take the time to put down in words just how significant and special your partner is and how much you admire her work as a new mum. Hearing your praise will make her feel like a queen, especially with a message straight from the heart.
GIVE HER A BREAK As much as she loves the little one, she needs some time to herself. Book her a spa day to help her feel like the beautiful woman that she is. Even being able to shop without the baby in tow could be a wonderful experience.
BREAKFAST IN BED Let her wake to the smell of fresh croissants and coffee with a quiet morning in bed. A beautiful bouquet of flowers will earn you some serious bonus points. OUTSIDE THE BOX If she says she has everything she wants, then trust her on this. Instead of spending money on a gift she won’t use, take her on a picnic to a favourite spot for some quality family time.
BLISSFUL INDULGENCE
Make her Mothers Day Spoil the special woman in your life this Mothers Day. One Wybelenna has a variety of rituals and indulgences for mums in mind. Try our Marma Mama Ritual, or indulge in the Zen Wybelenna Mama Ritual. You can also spoil a mother-to-be with our Expectant One Wybelenna Ritual. Call us today to book her in for one of these luxurious treatments, or purchase one of our beautiful gift certificates so she can choose her own blissful package.

MUM LOVIN’
CHRIS2860-V3 - Brooklyn Beauty Bar - CHRIS Brooklyn Beauty Bar BROOK01
Give the gift of beauty on Mother’s Day, writes Brooke Jesberg. NOW THAT I have my own beautiful baby, I finally understand what my mum has been telling me for years: Mother’s Day isn’t just about chocolates and flowers. I mean, that’s a lovely (and yummy!) gesture but your mum probably just wants to spend time creating memories with her kids. Picture this: you and your mum (and some other female family members, if you want to make it a group outing) head to James Street in Fortitude Valley to sit back and sip a glass of champagne while enjoying a manicure and pedicure. After the pampering is complete, you can head out to lunch or dinner, have a wander around the shops or maybe take in a movie to cap off the day. If you traditionally like to spoil your mum on her special day, then this plan might not seem extravagant enough to you. But for Mum, it’s pure heaven and another happy memory made.
Editor Christie and her beautiful mother and grandmother and being pampered at Brooklyn Beauty Bar.
Here at Brooklyn Beauty Bar, we’ve put together a beautiful Mother’s Day package, including a manicure, pedicure and Glow and Go facial for just $175. Let Mum have a day of pampering all to herself or join her for a day of truly magical memories. Love, Brooke xx BROOKLYN BEAUTY BAR 5/15 JAMES ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 0421 202 447 BROOKLYNBEAUTYBAR.COM.AU
TIP: GATHER THE LADIES IN YOUR FAMILY FOR A PAMPER PARTY! GROUPS OF THREE OR MORE PAY AS LITTLE AS $59 PER PERSON. A SWEET DEAL FOR A SWEET LADY: MANICURE, PEDICURE AND A GLOW AND GO FACIAL FOR JUST $175PP.

STYLE | MOTHER’S DAY Sarah Jane Young
“We’re normal people . . we’re just fighting a battle inside our heads. We still smile. We’re still loving mothers.”
“My priority is raising a happy, healthy daughter.”
EVERYDAY HERO As Mother’s Day approaches, three successful businesswomen and lifestyle bloggers share their views on the challenges of parenthood and encouraging other women, writes Leith Wilson. SARAH JANE YOUNG, Sally Obermeder and Lauren Patterson have each built a mass social media following from talking about the good, bad and ugly of motherhood. Poop and all. Their success largely stems from encouraging other women and emphasising that you don’t have to be perfect to be a good mum. Lauren Patterson, creator of MadMaxMum, says, “There is no use in me putting glitter on poop. I don’t lie and I’m honest as hell. People appreciate this because I’m relatable and I have the same struggles as they do.” Diagnosed with postnatal depression in January this year, the mother of three-year-old Madiysn and seven-month-old Max knows all too well what it’s like to feel worthless. But she refuses to let the illness rule her life and encourages other women to join in the fight. “We’re normal people ... we’re just fighting a battle inside our heads. We still smile. We’re still loving mothers. It is nothing to be ashamed of, I can guarantee you that,” Lauren wrote in a recent blog post. Sally Obermeder is mother to four-year-old Annabelle, CEO of family and lifestyle blog Swiish, 64
co-host of The Daily Edition and author of The Good Life. She knows that, like many working mums, she doesn’t always get the balance right but understands she is doing her best. “Don’t beat yourself up if you have to plonk your kids in front of the TV to get them to stop crying. At the end of the day, what matters is how much you love them and making sure they know that you value their mental, emotional and physical health and safety above anything else,” Sally says. Sarah Jane Young, creator of lifestyle blog She is, Sarah Jane agrees with this. “My priority is raising a happy, healthy daughter and the rest just needs to fit in around that – but it’s 100 per cent possible with good time management and a supportive network around you.” Talking to these inspirational women, one thing is abundantly clear: each loves and cares for their family unconditionally. As Mother’s Day approaches, let’s take some time to celebrate our mums for who they truly are, including all their triumphs and failures. Through any rocky periods or disagreements over the years, their main goal has always been the same: to give us the best life possible.

FOOD+DRINK SEVENTH HEAVEN Uncover a café gem that brings a trendy city vibe to the suburbs, writes Elizabeth Best. YOU KNOW THAT feeling when you accidentally stumble across a great foodie find? Where you kind of want to tell everyone about it but you also want to keep it on the down-low so you can always get a table? Yeronga’s newest café, Seven South, is one of those finds. So named for being just seven kilometres south of the city, this gem is far from your average suburban café. It’s owned by the same couple behind Home Store Café in Ashgrove so you know you’re in excellent hands. When we popped in around midday on a Friday, the place was already packed with diners indulging in a lazy lunch with a side of trendy atmosphere. The décor exuded a close-to-nature vibe, with plants adorning various surfaces from the tables to the walls. A reclaimed-wood 3D feature wall (also covered in plants) really adds depth to the space, while the simple white wireframe chairs and copper fixtures combine to create a glamorous, trendy feel. The lunch menu features a bevy of relaxed yet impressive dishes, including slow-roasted Wagyu rump cap sandwich with a bourbon glaze, and gnocchi with pancetta, clams, white wine and fennel. After a long, drawn-out decision-making process, I decided on a confit duck salad with stylemagazines.com.au

grapes, orange, parsley and fennel, and the Seven South Wagyu burger with smoked tomato, pickles, Gruyère, grain mustard and hand-cut chips. My fellow Styler had the house-smoked salmon cakes with avocado aioli, pickled beetroot, asparagus and fennel salad, chased down with a raspberry and watermelon crush. The duck was fall-off-the-bone tender, with a full robust flavour perfectly offset by the fresh grape and zesty orange. The Gruyère cheese and mustard combination gave the Wagyu burger a gourmet richness not usually found in mainstream burgers. And can we just take a second to appreciate the chips? The hand-cut beauties are as thick as planks, soft and fluffy on the inside, crispy and golden on the outside. My fellow Styler said the fish cakes tasted incredibly fresh and light, and she couldn’t get enough of the crush. The refreshing beverage was like sunshine in a cup but it wasn’t overly filling, leaving her with plenty of room for lunch. Tucked away from the main road, Seven South is brimming with relaxed suburban vibes only a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the city. Just make sure you get in quick to make the most of your lunch break – tables here will fill up fast!

DINE WITH GRANDEUR Gorgeous river views and simple, unpretentious seafood characterise this new Milton restaurant. FOR 30 YEARS, the heritage-listed building at 249 Coronation Drive in Milton has continued to operate as a restaurant while undergoing six huge transformations. Owner Brandon Clarke says that, at the end of last year, the space was reborn once more. Now, the concept harks back the venue’s most popular time during the mid to late ’90s. “We believe that Brisbane has been missing an upmarket seafood restaurant for a long time,” says Brandon. “Our belief in first-rate service, along with the incredible reputation of our Executive Chef Sunil Savur, who is well-renowned for his exceptional seafood, will really make the venue standout.” Complete with an oyster bar, marble detailing and chandeliers, the 128-year-old building is rich in old-world charm and caters for functions,

Look red carpet-ready with makeup from the stars, writes Elizabeth Best. WE’RE DYING TO know how to get that flawless celeb complexion. We stare at their perfectly-lined eyes, glowing cheeks and full lips and wonder, “How do they do it?” So whenever a star releases their own beauty line, we clamour over each other to grab a slice of what makes them shine. URBAN DECAY X GWEN STEFANI This stuff is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S. If you can get past the drool-worthy packaging, there’s an even more covetable product beneath. From her signature bold lips and a shadow palette that runs the full gamut of colour to a brow kit and a heavenly blush palette, Gwen’s beauty line is nextlevel. The best part? All the powders are highly pigmented, which means a little goes a long way.

Bobbi working on the brand’s celebrity face, Kate Upton
Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara $44
BEING BOBBI Sarah McAlpine chats to one of the biggest names in the beauty game. Bobbi Brown reveals her top tips and journey to success. WITH OVER 25 years as an established brand and makeup artist, Bobbi Brown knows beauty. Her commitment to embracing natural makeup and creating quality cosmetics to empower women has seen her author eight books, launch a charity initiative and create 650 products sold in over 70 countries. How have Bobbi Brown and the beauty industry evolved in 20 years? When I debuted my line in the 1991, women really embraced these uniquely flattering shades and my realistic approach to beauty. The women who came to our counter were quintessentially modern - very busy (like I am), and weren’t afraid to speak out about what they wanted. Today, women want the same thing – simple and effective products that will help them look and feel their very best and crave the knowledge of how to use them. Women have become so much more knowledgeable about products and application techniques. We’ve definitely moved away from the idea that there’s only one definition of beauty. We’re starting to realize that what we should all strive for is a very personal definition of our own beauty. 70
Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge For Lips & Cheeks $45
Tell us about your creative process for designing new products. My inspiration comes from a variety of places – from travelling to colorful fabrics to everyday women I see on the street and also out of sheer need. Developing the LongWear Gel Eyeliner is a great memorable moment. A few years ago, I was doing my own makeup for a shoot, and I realized I forgot to bring eye liner. I reached into my bag and found waterproof mascara so I took a Q-tip and lined my eyes with the mascara, and it lasted till that night – that’s how Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner was born. What does it mean to be a modern woman in business? Over the last 20 years, I’ve learned to find time to do it all – run a company, raise three kids and lead a happy marriage. If you know what’s most important to you, you will always make the right decisions. Strict prioritizing has been my greatest tool. My family is the most important thing to me and I fit everything else around them. Love this excerpt from our interview? Read the full version online! READ

WORKING WELL ON LATROBE Are you passionate about holistic health? A revamped natural health centre in Paddington is looking at the bigger picture for its clients. ROBERT DEANE HAD a vision for Latrobe Health Centre. Undaunted by the ugly duckling nature of the site, the Paddington local and property owner took on the task of transforming the space into something new and exciting. Robert created The Work Well to provide the existing practitioners with a reinvigorated, functional and engaging workspace to better cater to their client’s health and wellness needs. With an aim to revitalise body, mind and soul, The Work Well provides inner-city dwellers with a dynamic health-focused community in the heart of Brisbane’s vibrant Paddington precinct. Providing an abundance of health and wellness services, The Work Well offers acupuncture, body psychotherapy, career psychology, general practice, kinesiology, midwifery, naturopathy,

osteopathy, psychology, relationship counselling, remedial massage, spiritual healing, sports nutrition and traditional Chinese medicine. Podiatry is also on offer at adjoining Shoes Feet Gear who combine footwear, podiatry services and training gear conveniently under one roof. A long-time supporter of alternative medicine and natural therapies, Robert understands the importance of holistic health. “I strongly believe optimal health and wellness is based on a positive mindset and must take into account the whole person; body, mind, spirit and
emotions,” says Robert. “Sadly, conventional medicine is all too often concerned with treating the condition when it develops, as opposed to preventative measures adopted as part of a more holistic approach in a health centre like The Work Well.” A forward-thinking health centre, The Work Well is forging the creation of a vibrant, health-focussed community in Paddington. WESTSIDE WELLNESS One of Brisbane’s most popular hot yoga and Pilates studios has opened a second exciting location! THERE’S NO DOUBT hot yoga is one of the most popular fitness trends around today – it seems like a new studio pops up every time we blink! But there’s one name that has been pioneering the industry: it’s Harlow Hot Pilates and Yoga, and a brand-new studio has just opened in Milton. At just two kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, studio owner Jacklyn Robb says the new Milton location will offer clients greater flexibility. “It’s quite challenging to get from one side of the city to the other in peak time,” Jacklyn says. “Having the new studio on the opposite side of the city to our existing studio in Newstead will make it convenient for young professionals who either work in the city or in the western suburbs to attend.” The fresh new fit-out is all about creating a serene, friendly environment where clients are 72

LOVE THY SELF
SELF-COMPASSION MEANS NOT AIMING FOR PERFECTION OR LIVING BY RESTRICTION.
Most things in life that are worthwhile will involve the occasional setback as you move towards your goal. Wesley LifeShape Clinic explains why achieving a healthy lifestyle is no different. WHEN IT COMES to your weight loss efforts, it’s unrealistic to think setbacks won’t occur. Rather than giving up altogether, it is recommended to approach these moments with a little selfcompassion. You’ll soon realise that most setbacks simply require you to re-evaluate and refocus. Self-compassion means not aiming for perfection or living by restriction. A lapse in your weight loss journey followed by a positive action will achieve a far better result than simply giving up. Learning how to recover from setbacks is the best way to achieve long-term health.
A LAPSE IN YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY FOLLOWED BY A POSITIVE ACTION WILL ACHIEVE A FAR BETTER RESULT THAN SIMPLY GIVING UP.
The Clinical Psychologist at Wesley LifeShape Clinic has a few tips to help you commit to your long-term weight loss goals: Commit to self-compassion. If self-criticism is not working, it’s time to change your mindset. Don’t dwell on the past. Accept setbacks and move forward with your goal in sight. Stop negative self-talk. Notice how you speak to yourself. Turn negative selftalk around by imagining what you would say to a friend in the same situation. Be mindful. When eating, take a moment
to analyse the situation – are there any emotional triggers for your choices? Share the love. By encouraging your friends and family to move past their setbacks, you will help change the way you view your own. Talk to an expert: If you feel you need extra support, the team at Wesley LifeShape can help you identify your eating cues for a healthier, more compassionate approach to weight loss. MEET THE LEG VEIN DOCTOR Dr Nicholas Kemp sat down with Style to chat about why he’s dedicated to helping people of all ages combat varicose veins. How did you come to be The Leg Vein Doctor? I was born in Brisbane and studied medicine at UQ. When I graduated, I decided to go into rural general practice and worked mostly in North Queensland and Mount Isa. I suffered from varicose veins in my 30s and had them surgically removed. The veins recurred 10 years later and I was disappointed to be facing surgery again. I was exploring the option of modern alternatives for myself so I decided to do further training in the field of phlebology. What is your philosophy behind your work? I wanted to specialise within a small area of medicine so that I could offer my patients the best treatment possible. Personally, I enjoy working in stylemagazines.com.au
Dr Nicholas Kemp
this field because it’s so challenging. I see patients of all ages, each person is different and so is the way I choose to treat them. What are some common problems that your patients face? We only treat leg veins and see patients with varicose veins, recurrent veins following surgery, spider veins and venous ulcers. What advice would you give to someone thinking about having their legs checked? Don’t leave it until you get ulcers! Once you start
getting skin damage, treatment becomes much more difficult. Being proactive in getting an assessment on your varicose veins can be a good course of action. The treatment plan you are given at the initial consultation lasts for a year and you are under no obligation to book in for a procedure straight away. FEELING TRAPPED BY the guidelines of her modelling career, Brisbane model Chloe Szepanowski started a YouTube channel in 2015. A year later, she boasts more than 300,000 followers across various social media platforms. Passionate about sharing her beliefs on a balanced lifestyle full of great food, exercise, and self-love, Chloe chatted to us about her recent makeover at Toni & Guy. What made you choose Toni & Guy? I went with Toni & Guy because of the reputation they have with high fashion. I got a little too comfortable with my old salon and perhaps they did with me too. I was getting bored with my hair, so I jumped in headfirst at Toni & Guy and the service has been second to none. They suggested a change, and I’m so happy I went with it.

WHAT IS A VAMPIRE FACIAL?
IF YOU’RE WORRIED about your leg health, April is a great time to book in at our clinic for a consultation. You will receive a complete medical examination and ultrasound investigation on your legs, as well as the findings and suggested course of action. Most patients require multiple sessions, usually over a few months, to achieve optimal results. From start to finish, you will be taken care of by me (Dr Nicholas Kemp); we also offer complimentary post-treatment reviews for a year to ensure a procedure’s success. Booking in advance offers you the freedom to choose treatment days and to accommodate work and family commitments. Our after-hours sessions are very popular and the nature of the treatments means there is no downtime. Early booking allows you the opportunity to complete your treatment in the cooler months, which is a more comfortable time to wear the compression stockings. Most importantly, it means that your legs will be gorgeous and summer-ready before the next heat wave hits!
BROW PRODUCTS ARE a godsend, but in the wrong hands they can do more harm than good! The “sharpie brow” occurs when too much product has been used to paint on the brow, making it look flat, unnatural and typically discoloured. When you plaster on product, the eyebrow can lose its lovely natural shape and make the brows look too heavy above the eyes. Naturallooking brows enhance youthful beauty, which is why it’s so important! Don’t fall into the trap of plastering the product on because it doesn’t last; try The Brow Bar’s SuperWear Brow Definer to get that natural detail by using light strokes to fill in the brows. Our SuperWear Brow Definer is a long-lasting pen-like applicator, made specifically for accuracy. Finish the brows with The Brow Bar’s Brow Set and you’re ready for a full day of looking beautiful! Visit The Brow Bar today for a consultation with an Arch Angel about how to get the best youthful-looking brows.
THE VAMPIRE FACIAL, also known as plateletrich plasma or PRP treatment, is an increasingly popular method for facial, hand, eye, décolletage and neck rejuvenation. Used by celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian, this simple procedure involves taking a normal blood test and spinning the blood down in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelet-rich plasma. This clear fluid is then infiltrated into the desired areas of the skin. For best results, experts recommend a series of three treatments one month apart. Platelet-rich plasma has many rejuvenation benefits and is also used in the treatment of burns, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and physiotherapy to accelerate healing. As we age, the collagen and elastin in our skin becomes depleted. PRP treatments are designed to help skin become progressively thicker, tighter and more supple, therefore reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Book an appointment now to find out whether a Vampire Facial is right for you.

DON’T JUST CROSS YOUR FINGERS
RECOVER FROM INFIDELITY
A PROVEN METHOD
WOMEN HAVE MORE choice than ever before when it comes to contraception. Options range from the pill to implants, injections, intrauterine devices (IUDs), condoms and vasectomy. When choosing the right contraceptive, there are many things to take into consideration, including lifestyle and convenience. For most women, the contraceptive pill remains the most suitable choice, the main reason being that it has other benefits, such as control of the cycle and heavy bleeding, and reduction of acne. Every method of contraception has pros and cons. For example, the pill is not appropriate for some women who are lactating or who suffer from migraines, depression, high blood pressure or previous breast cancer. In most cases, your GP is well-equipped to discuss contraceptive choices. However, a small number of women require a gynaecology review and expert treatment of their particular problem before deciding on a method of contraception. If you fall into this category, ask your GP for a referral.
AFFAIRS ARE DAMAGING; they can sound the death knell or be a wake-up call. If you’re committed to repairing your relationship, there is a way back. But you have to make that decision. Trust is the cornerstone of relationships. When trust has been broken due to infidelity, a structured process needs to be followed to save the relationship and recover quality trust. After the affair has stopped, there needs to be an explanation (not excuse) of how and why the affair started and was maintained. This history will also be useful when it comes to working out what changes need to be made to insulate the relationship. If the faithful partner has questions, they must be answered honestly before forgiveness can be sought and given. During recovery, both partners must contain sadness, anxiety, anger, and hopelessness. Feelings are natural, but extreme expression of them will hijack the necessary discussions. Finally, partners need to recommit by negotiating what the new version of the relationship will look like.
OUR EIGHT-WEEK CHALLENGE has yielded some amazing results for its 16 participants. In just four weeks, the group has lost a combined 56 kilograms and 205 centimetres with our unique in-studio services. So what is the secret? It’s the Hypoxi method, which is renowned for being three times more effective at targeting stubborn fat and cellulite around your hips, thighs, bottom and stomach than conventional exercise. REAL RESULTS: The InBody 570 scanner tracks muscle mass, water weight, fat percentage, minerals and metric centimetres, and allows specialists to make necessary tweaks to diet and exercise to improve results. NUTRITION: By obtaining an optimum metabolic rate, a nutritional plan is provided, ensuring results are maintained long-term. INFRARED SAUNA: De-stress, detox and improve your health in just 30 minutes. MUCH LIKE FOOD, beauty products have an expiry date. However, because they’re not as clearly outlined, these expiry dates are sometimes ignored altogether. So how do you know when it’s really time to toss that product? Your mascara should be updated every three months, while experts suggest restocking your lipstick around every 12 months. Bacteria favours wet conditions, so it’s best to toss your liquid foundation after six months. Eyeshadow could last up to two years as long as it hasn’t crumbled. “I DON’T KNOW IF AN INTERIOR DESIGNER WOULD SAY IT WORKS, BUT IT WORKS FOR US.”

WHERE THE ART IS
CLAIREC2807
BRISBANE-BASED HELEN BAYLEY launched Lovestar in 2013, driven by her love for flowers and a unique style that people have come to adore. Over the past few years, Lovestar has received incredible support from the public, with Helen’s products being featured in design blogs and prestigious print publications alike. Helen says that her eclectic mixture of vintage and sentimental pieces and vibrant colour could be potential for a complete styling disaster. But somehow she manages to make it all flow seamlessly, bringing the same infectious joy and vibrancy to her interior design as she does to her Lovestar range. Helen says that a neutral background, such as white walls, is the key to accommodating colour pops and lots of different pieces. “I don’t know if an interior designer would say it works, but it works for us,” says Helen She’s also a big fan of collecting vintage items and has a blast giving items a new lease on life. “I love the idea of beautiful old things being recycled,” says Helen. “We recently had our council

clean-up for our suburb, and I was out trawling the streets! I found a beautiful old cane double-seater, a beautiful wicker chair, the sweetest porcelain rose embellished lamp, and a Persian rug! Just about enough to style one whole room! It’s amazing what people throw out!” With such a creative mindset, it’s no wonder Helen’s business is booming. In addition to her Queen of Hearts range, vases featuring icons such as Frida Kahlo and Beyoncé are proof that a combination of simplicity and eclectic style can go a long way. LOVESTAR.COM.AU

SUBURBAN SANCTUARY Living in the suburbs is becoming increasingly appealing for Brisbane buyers. Here’s why. WITH ITS WIDE, tree-lined streets, beautiful Queenslanders and a friendly community vibe, Clayfield is a haven for buyers looking to get a head start in the Brisbane market. Luke Bird and George Kezilas, directors of Stanford George Developments, say Clayfield is quickly establishing itself as an affordable, vibrant hub. Their latest development, W81 Boutique Apartments on Wagner Road, makes the most of all the suburb has to offer. Although Wagner Road offers an ideal location for unit blocks, Luke and George say that limited unit development has taken place thus far. They were conscious about ensuring that their project should reflect the character of the area. “The street is a combination of units and houses which blend wonderfully with the trees and

appearance of the suburb. The double block area gave us the space we needed to focus on our large interiors.” Luke and George say the success of W81 Boutique Apartments has been astonishing so far. “As of March, we’ve sold seven out of 10 apartments, over half of which are to local buyers, with more on the way. This has been really encouraging and convinces us that our strategy of quality over quantity resonates with our buyers.” According to Luke and George, the units’ affordability and proximity to the city has also been a popular feature with buyers.
“Apartment dwellers love the easy lifestyle but they also want peaceful living and large dwellings. W81 in Clayfield offers this,” they say. “They provide access to established amenities like local businesses, schools, restaurants and parks. As a result, they become a more exclusive place to live and therefore a wiser place to invest.” For more information on the Clayfield development, contact Harcourts Solutions Selling Agent Bridget Gabites. TRAVEL YOU CAN DRIVE, HIKE OR HORSEBACK RIDE AROUND HALEAKALĀ NATIONAL PARK
HAWAIIAN DREAMING
PHOTOGRAPHER: ROB MCALPINE
TO VIEW MAUI FROM ITS HIGHEST POINT!
With so many enticing adventures to choose from, Hawaii should go straight to the top of your travel list this year, writes Sarah McAlpine. LAST YEAR, AT 25 years old, I sat my entire family down and pitched them the ultimate family holiday. Return flights to Hawaii were around $650 (although you can now often find them even cheaper) and it had been years since we’d headed overseas altogether. The result was an unforgettable 10-day stay in Maui and Waikiki packed with the perfect balance of relaxation, picturesque backdrops, food and festivities. We flew into Honolulu (about a nine-hour flight) and then straight onto Maui. You can pick up a return trip for around $US170 and there are multiple flights daily. Each of the six main islands that you can visit offer a different feel, and you can even take personality tests online to find the island best suited to your holiday preferences. There are two additional main islands that are not accessible to tourists. Maui gave us a more authentic Hawaiian experience, with beautiful seaside towns, snorkelling, whale watching and unspoilt beaches. The highlight of our trip was a helicopter ride over the mountains to where Jurassic Park was filmed. There’s this really odd practice where you can cut all of your entertainment bills significantly by watching a two-hour Timeshare demonstration, so 86
we saved thousands of dollars all up by going to one of these. We also unsuccessfully embarked on the Road to Hana. The infamous Hana Highway boasts an incredible 600 turns and 54 bridges, most of which are blind and single-lane. The journey through lush mountain rainforest is only about 85 kilometres, but it can take up to four hours one way. It was a little bit scary at times with our massive rental car and we were racing against the daylight, so we opted to turn around about two and a half hours in. Once we returned to Honolulu, we rented an Airbnb apartment at Waikiki, which has a much more lively, tourist feel. Here we ventured out to the eerily beautiful Pearl Harbour, the bargain-packed outlet shopping malls at Lahaina, Pipeline on the North Shore and enjoyed an unforgettable luau at the Hilton Hawaiian. The Hawaiian people are kind, helpful and their connection to the land is awe-inspiring. Although the accommodation can be quite pricey, it’s an all-round affordable holiday for the family and we hadn’t even left before we were planning our return. APRIL16

BOOK A MOUNTAIN BLISS PACKAGE AND RECEIVE AN UPGRADE WHEN
Less than 40 minutes from Brisbane, the Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge was the perfect vacation for Caitlyn Spanner and sister Alicia. INTENT ON SECURING the ultimate weekend getaway location, I found that Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge offered the perfect place for my sister and I to bond, relax, laugh and indulge. The refurbished rooms, sporting chilled Chandon and the most glorious cushions, look out upon charming bushland, which gives way to the divine blue water of Lake Samsonvale, The Glasshouse Mountains and, way in the distance, Brisbane City. Dinner at Mandy’s on the Mountain was filled with the sights and tastes of the sea. We enjoyed freshly-picked micro herbs, edible sand and Moreton Bay bugs while overlooking the twinkling lights of Brisbane’s northern outer suburbs. After a buffet breakfast the next morning,
we took some time to explore the grounds and prepare ourselves for an experience at Stephanies Mountain Spa. We were lucky enough to try the steam treatment, which had us covered from head to toe in mud and relaxing in a star-strewn room, giggling and sharing conversation. This enchanting location, combined with the perfect weather and the company of my beautiful sister, had me returning to work full of joy and tales of Clear Mountain, spa treatments, wine and delicious food. Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge is a must-do on your Brisbane bucket list. MERCURE CLEAR MOUNTAIN LODGE 564 CLEAR MOUNTAIN RD, CLEAR MOUNTAIN P 3298 5100 CLEARMOUNTAINLODGE.COM.AU
