EDITOR’S NOTE If you love a little or a lot of luxury, this issue is for you. This month, our Luxe issue found us at one of the most spectacular hotels in Australia – the award-winning Halcyon House, where we shot our gorgeous cover story. Located on the beach at Cabarita in NSW, this was the shoot that everyone at Style wanted to assist on! And it’s no wonder. We’re very fortunate at Style to enjoy so many outstanding hotels and locations, but Halcyon House certainly raises the bar on luxury boutique hotels. It was also one of the easiest shoots because every room, and around every corner, is a picture perfect ‘shot’. Our day started at 6am, so we could get a few shots by the poolside before the hotel guests arose. The sunrise was sensational and we could easily imagine ourselves lounging on the blue and white striped pool chairs with a book and a cool drink in hand. We then moved into the divine Paper Daisy restaurant – which was perfectly enchanting with its colourful and whimsical decor. But personally, I loved the day spa with its stunning colour palettes in each treatment room. We chose the pretty pink room as it perfectly matched a divine pink Ganni dress that I was dying to shoot – check it out on page 4. (BTW, blue I’m told, is one of the fave room colours with guests, so be sure to book your preferred colour). High-end European fashion brands from Camargue in James Street, coupled with our stunning model Sofia, made styling this shoot a dream. I can’t wait to return to Halcyon House as a guest. This is the place of memories. And it certainly won’t hurt your instagram feed either – if you’re into that.

nterlacing coastal-inspired décor with luxurious statement pieces, is the essence of Hamptons interior design. Taking inspiration from this relaxed yet sophisticated lifestyle, Brisbane homes could be described in the same vein; incorporating white-washed furniture, natural textures and neutral tones with glimpses of vivid colour. We love nothing more than stepping into an inner-city oasis, only to be greeted by a lavish offwhite linen lounge peppered with textured cushions and throws, adding that extra layer of comfort. Breathing life into the space by introducing lush greenery, is the final step to tie the room together and with an abundance of light streaming into homes across the sunshine state, there is no better place in the country to enjoy a classic, yet modern Hamptons-inspired design.

old, sophisticated and effortlessly chic, a monochromatic design is synonymous with luxury. Investing in an elegant, plush lounge suite will serve as the focal point of the room, anchoring each of the surrounding elements and providing a deeply relaxing haven to return home to. Introducing a framed print or patterned rug in an ombre hue are simple ways to bring dimension to the room, before adding an extra layer of indulgence and character with a statement furniture piece. We’re loving the James Lane Cannes armchair! Our balmy, Brisbane climate has always lent itself to the necessity for fans, the difference is nowadays we have stylish alternatives to adorn our ceilings cinching the room together perfectly with some moody, pendant lighting.

hree years ago, two talented sisters decided to create a hotel like no other in Australia. Since then, Siobhan and Elisha Bickle have grown their boutique hotel to where it is today, having recently been named in the Condé Nast Traveller 2019 Best Hotels in the World Gold List, a testament of hard work, courage, and female empowerment.

Food Review WORDS BY LAURA FENDON

U

pon entering Paper Daisy through the gorgeous brick archways, you can’t help but feel a sense of familiarity. The exquisite restaurant was intricately designed by Brisbane’s own Anna Spiro, and it’s easy to see her quirky and eclectic touch wherever you look throughout the venue. It was a 29 degree day at Cabarita Beach, and the sun was beaming down as I pulled up to Halcyon House, the home of Paper Daisy. After a tour of some beautiful Halcyon suites and a quick peek into Halcyon Spa, I was seated at an alfresco table in, arguably, the best spot in the house. With the ocean in front of me, the pool to my left, and the bar to my right, it was only practical to order a cocktail. I decided on Money Penny’s Martini, a delicious mix of goji infused Grey Goose, lychee liquor, lime, and pomegranate, served in a glass coated in strawberry dust. Sweet and fruity and undeniably thirst quenching, it was the perfect start to lunch on a warm day. For entrée, I was recommended the green rice crumbed prawns with chilli and ginger pickle salad, and it didn’t disappoint. Full of citrus with just the right amount of tang, I was served three of the biggest prawns I’ve ever seen in my life, resting on a bed of carrot tendrils, fresh coriander, and cucumber

ribbons. Crispy prawns and zesty dressing made for the perfect combination, settling my hungry stomach before moving on to the dish of the day. For main, I was treated to a much-loved favourite from the dinner menu, the paperbark roasted fish with sugarloaf, potato, and kelp. Just as the name suggests, a juicy piece of freshly caught fish is served on paperbark, exuding a smoky, full flavour and paired with crispy shallots, fresh herbs, and just the right amount of spice. The fish was also served with two recommended chef sides of the day; zucchini and chives, and mesclun salad, making it a hearty dish that left me with no room for one bite more. Boasting Two Hats and recently named Best Hotel Breakfast in Gourmet Traveller, à la carte dining is what they do best, and with Jason Barratt recently announced as their new Executive Chef, we’re only expecting bigger and better things from here. Taking over from Ben Devlin who’s been at the helm of Paper Daisy since it opened in 2015, Jason is hoping to continue the impeccable quality diners know and love, and to take the heavy influence from what is grown in the northern rivers of the region. We’ve also heard there are talks of a new menu in the works, and can’t wait to see what Jason has in store for this gorgeous restaurant.

Fuelled up Finance We sat down with the director of Fuel Asset Finance, Chad Arenson.

What is the process you follow to ensure you get the best finance for each client? We understand that each of our clients is unique, so not only do we get to know their current financial situation, we also get to know their long term goals and how we can assist them in a way that is sustainable for their future. By taking all of these factors into consideration, we investigate the best options to suit their individual circumstances. At what stage of the buying process should a client contact you? A lot of my clients come to me before they’ve even looked at a new car. A huge portion of my business is referral based from my existing clientele, family and friends. Not only do I have a great knowledge of the automotive industry, due to my dealership and industry relationships, I have the ability to assist my clients with test drives, car sourcing, trading their existing vehicle, and most importantly, their finance. What sets you apart from others in your industry? We pride ourselves on being able to provide our clients a full circle service. We do not just stop at finance; we can assist the client from enquiry to driveway. We can liaise with the dealerships on behalf of the client to ensure we achieve the best outcome for them, and we can source the car for our clients, at no extra cost, while obtaining the best deal for them from our network of dealerships. We have the ability to save our customers not only time, but also money. How do you make the process of obtaining finance easier? We make it easier by taking out the research and work for the client by finding the most suitable product for their financial situation. This saves the client a STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

lot of time shopping around for the best deal, and can save them a lot of money. Our expert knowledge allows us to understand individual financial situations from a professional perspective, and find the most suitable loan option that they may have missed. What is one piece of advice you can give to someone who’s looking at buying their next car? It can take a lot of time and research to ensure you’re making the right decision when purchasing a car, so ensure you have someone working for you that has great knowledge, experience and market awareness of the industry. This will ensure a holistic and educated approach to your car purchase and finance. Do you offer any other services for your clients? Diamonds are forever We chat to the man behind Brisbane’s most bespoke jewellery designs.

I

nfluencing the Brisbane jewellery industry for over 37 years, Jason Withers is inspired by the work of his father as an international jewellery designer, beginning in the 1960s. Jewellery is in Jason’s blood, and to date, as a diamond grader, gemologist, and master jewellery designer, he’s designed over 1,000 engagement rings to date. Tell us a bit about some of your career highlights: I spent seven years between Russia, Belgium and London learning and dealing in the international diamond industry with De Beers Group and was invited to be a White Diamond Sightholder for them, which is a great honour. I also developed the first Australian iPhone and Android application software for my design catalogue and the ‘Ring Sizer App,’ which has been featured in Vogue Australia. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

Do you have any areas of specialty? I am a Diamond Grader, Gemologist and Master Jewellery Designer. At Jason Withers Original Diamonds, we provide a ‘while you wait’ design service, where clients can come in by appointment and have their dream ring created by me. We also do this for clients who want to combine their old heirloom pieces into a new, wearable item that can be passed down to their children. What sort of experience do you provide your customers? Each ring is as unique as the person it’s created for, and as such, each of the rings we design are made individually to fit with each client’s needs and specifications. We keep records of all of our designs so that over the years clients can add to their bridal sets, or create new gifts of love that complement their existing pieces. We only use high quality GIA Certified diamonds, gem stones and metals, which allows for a bespoke design, wearability, functionality and longevity. Tell us more about the different services you offer: We make bespoke engagement rings, wedding and eternity bands, earrings, diamond bracelets, necklaces and pendants to order, and also have a remodel service for clients’ old pieces they wish to give new life to. We provide a full after care service for all of these too, with free cleaning and polishing for life for all clients. We also give a complimentary centre diamond upgrade against competitor quoted diamonds. Can you explain the difference between yourself as a wholesaler jeweller, and a typical retail jeweller? When clients come to us the chain for a diamond is quite simple, as it goes from the international cutting and polishing house, to myself, and then straight to the client. Because of our integration with De Beers, as a white diamond sightholder we have

tm ppoin ent aw

Your

na

pi m a e

access to high quality diamonds before the retailers, allowing us to pass on the wholesale savings to our clients. They get the best quality and service for their money without diluting the quality of the end piece. What sets you apart from other jewellers? We specialise in top D – F colour GIA Certified, ethically sourced diamonds as well as Argyle Pink diamonds. We give clients a free upgrade to the quality of their chosen diamond, whether it be a larger size, or higher colour and clarity, and handle the process ourselves from start to finish, which means more efficient turnaround times and superior attention to detail. How has the business grown throughout the past decade? We now have three studios; our Brisbane location at Spring Hill, our Sydney location in the CBD, and a studio in Hong Kong. Our live diamond feeds provide clients with unprecedented access to the market, allowing them to get a feel for what they’re looking for, and establish a suitable budget. Over the last decade, designs and manufacturing capabilities have changed enormously, giving us more scope to make intricate designs and give superior finishes to our pieces. What has the business got planned for 2019? The jewellery industry is fast becoming like the retail fashion industry, cranking out repetitive mass-produced pieces that everyone has. We want to create your dream piece that’s just for you, and do so by taking into account your day to day activities, as well as your dream setting style. By choosing to work with an Australian family business, you are choosing to support local and will be given a lifetime of service. With the recent opening of the new Viktoria & Woods store in Brisbane, we speak to founder and creative director Margie Woods about her Aussie fashion label.

V

iktoria & Woods has been a cult favourite of ours for years; it has an effortless, pared-back, modern feel of wardrobe staples that ooze luxury. The brand was founded in Melbourne in 2004 and is proudly designed and made in Australia. As well as being accredited with Ethical Clothing Australia, their sustainable textiles and manufacturing methods make for a lighter footprint on the planet - a philosophy they’re committed to. The first Brisbane store has just hit QueensPlaza, and is sure to level up our fashion boutique game and help us embrace our relaxed city style. Welcome to Brisbane! What made you decide to open a store here? Thank you! We are so excited to finally be here, and part of the Australian designer floor of QueensPlaza. We have a growing number of Queenslanders that shop with us online and in our Sydney and Melbourne boutiques, so naturally we wanted to continue connecting with our customers here. The city’s growth and culture is definitely booming, and we love that we are a part of this exciting progression. What do you think of Brisbane women’s style? I am always inspired when visiting Brisbane; I love the light, effortless resort style the pleasant climate brings – definitely a contrast to Melbourne. When and where did you start your label? Viktoria & Woods was established in 2004 in my hometown, Melbourne. We are celebrating 15 years this year! Give us a bit of background on Viktoria & Woods The label was born from the idea of creating one signature merino wool piece and it’s incredible how the brand has evolved since. We now offer complete ready-to-wear STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

collections that include premium denim, footwear, lounge and occasion wear. The brand has expanded with seven boutiques across Australia including online, and we are supported by leading retail destinations. Describe your brand aesthetic? Viktoria & Woods is based on a simple approach to create effortless wardrobe staples with a modern feel. Our customer and style is always evolving, but we always remain true to timeless design, quality fabrications, and contemporary styling. We offer our customer an everyday essential uniform, which is anything but basic. Where did you draw your inspiration from for your latest collection, ‘NORDE’? This Winter, colours are drawn from our interpretation of natural elements including copper, ice and sand. We were inspired by liquid elements, forming effortless silhouettes. Layering this season is carefully considered from the outside in, with the idea of peeling back – we have included statement coating layered with our luxury knitwear. New offerings this season are lace, spliced with satin creating a modernity in our evening dressing. How is your clothing produced and where is it created? Proudly, the majority of Viktoria & Woods designs are made in Australia and accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia. We value sustainable textiles and manufacturing methods that leave a lighter footprint on the planet, a philosophy we are committed to. We have a core focus on sustainability both from an ethical view as well longevity in every piece. You’ve just celebrated your 15th Anniversary, congratulations! Have you got any exciting plans in the works for 2019? Thank you, it’s an exciting time. We

loved celebrating #VW15YEARS over the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, it was a wonderful opportunity to reflect and celebrate our journey with close friends of the brand. This year, we are focused on expanding our retail vision and continuously evolving the brand with our design. What’s your favourite piece in the collection right now, and why? My favourite look from our latest Winter 19 Collection ‘NORDE’, is the Niles Suit Jacket & Kensley Skirt Pant, this suit is effortless with an edge and very true to my style. Who would you love to see wearing your brand? Cate Blanchett, Meghan Markle, Lara Stone & Margot Robbie. PAGE 25

WORDS BY KIRI JOHNSTON a day-in-the-life of your business? I start at 7:30am and try to answer emails from customers and wholesale first thing, then I move into designing, PR or accounting. It’s hard to stay focused as things do arise that you need to deal with each day, so it’s not easy. But I try to schedule certain days of the week for marketing versus designing. I am always finished by 5pm; I work much better in the mornings! Some tips for aspiring fashion designers/business owners? Make sure you have a balance of business knowledge and not just creativity; it’s hard work running your own business so you need to have a very balanced mindset. Any 2019 goals or dreams you have? I really want to push F+H internationally. I have just secured my first luxury boutique in Korea, which is very exciting!

Occupation: Owner and designer of Femme + Homme Jewellery @fandhjewellery. Fave F+H Jewellery pieces? The new Femme stud earrings I created for International Women’s Day and my Kashmir Pearl Earrings. What did you do before designing jewellery and starting F+H? I worked in marketing, PR and events. Can you tell us a bit about the production of your jewellery? It starts with sketching, designing in Illustrator and then handing the collection to my craftsman for sampling. Where do you draw inspiration from? Nature, vintage imagery, music and street style. How many people do you have in your team at F+H or is it just you? It’s just me! But I definitely outsource as much as I can to assist with advertising, PR and marketing. Who is the most famous person to wear your designs? Margot Robbie, she is a huge fan of the brand and loves all the crosses! Give us a little insight on

BUSINESS

Sum up a typical day for you. I start the day with a F45 class at 5:30am and then arrive at the office around 7:30am. A day could include designing, PR, planning shoots, researching or social media! I’m always out of the office around 5pm and ready for a beach walk, swim or surf. I definitely need some outdoor activities to help me wind down at the end of a busy day. Then once I’m home it’s pretty much just all about food and relaxing! Favourite town/city? New York, it’s just so inspiring. Go-to Aussie designer? I wear mostly overseas designers but Sir the Label is a great go to for relaxed beach wear. Drink of choice? Soy cappuccino for day and Negroni for night. Couldn’t leave the house without? My dog, Yoplait. First thing you did this morning? Had a matcha! Song on high rotation. Come Said The Boy by Mondo Rock. What do you like to do in your spare time? Read, surf, hike, chill at the beach, anything outdoors, I find if I stay inside too much I just think about work! Next holiday destination? Heading to Italy in October but before that a trip to Tassie for the Dark Mofo Festival in June.

Bundle of joy The bespoke gifting service created by Brianna Russo that’s bringing back authenticity and individuality to gift giving. How long have you been running The Bundle Collective? We started in January 2017 and recently celebrated our 2-year anniversary. What gave you the idea to start your business? I initially had an idea to expand into the bridal market as I was working at the time for a Melbourne events and styling company coordinating weddings and managing the marketing of the business. As time went on, the business pivoted and I found myself steering into the corporate market. I was always that ‘last minute gift buyer’ and struggled to find gifts that weren’t daggy, overpriced, impersonal or boring. I also struggled to find time to leave work and go to the shops to buy a gift. As time went on, I made notes of ways in which I could create a gifting service that would fill that gap in the market.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

How did you get your brand up and running? Everything takes a little time, especially when working full time. The first thing I did was write a business plan, which helped put all my ideas, goals, and thoughts down on paper and made things a little bit easier to start with. I then started ordering products from selectively sourced suppliers and setting up a website, before approaching a number of businesses, influencers, friends and family to try and start spreading the word as much as possible. What excites you the most about your business? When I get a new client and they want to do something different, cheeky, clever. I love coming up with different ways to market their business, event and/or brand. What future plans do you have for your brand? In 2019 I plan on seeing growth in our corporate gifting sector. Over the past year,

this part of the business has been unreal – the response we have had is pretty amazing, so I would love to focus on that area and work with even more corporates moving forward. Do you have any tips for up-and-coming business owners? Listen to people’s advice but follow your gut! Make mistakes, learn from them and keep working hard towards reaching your goals. If something doesn’t work out, don’t stop, perhaps just pivot in a different direction. I suggest using that negative experience and turning it into something positive. Lastly, believe in yourself and your brand! THE BUNDLE COLLECTIVE THEBUNDLE.COM.AU

Let’s talk business Brad Hagland takes us behind the scenes of the Australian Residential Group. Describe the business you do. ARG has two main streams to its business. The sales side is predominantly focussed on “business to business,” with the team working closely with professional partners across Australia. While we offer a large range of brand new property, we are not project marketers, but find the best solution based on our clients brief. This allows us to be incredibly agile, it only seemed natural working so close with developers and builders that our services would extend to development acquisition and sales consultancy. This is where my passion lies. What makes this business so special? Our ability to see opportunities where others don’t. Personal relationship building, listening to clients’ needs and offering solutions to the challenges faced in development acquisition, are key components to what we do. What kind of clients can you look after? I focus on the development sales and acquisition side of the ARG business. We are ideally positioned as the ARG sales business to work with everyone, from small boutique developers to larger national development companies. Our recent site sales have ranged from splitter blocks on the small end, to sites suited to 30 townhouse units, and right through to multiple amalgamated properties which will yield over 600 lots. Depending on the situation we can represent either the developer or the vendor. For example, a number of developers in Brisbane use us as an extension of their own internal acquisitions teams to source off market development opportunities, where a brief could include targeted suburbs and/or individual properties. In other situations, we take a more traditional approach and act on behalf of the vendor - either way we focus on positive results. What are you most passionate about when it comes to ARG? To be honest it’s the people – I know that sounds a little cliché, but PAGE 28

I’ve never been involved in a business where each individual is equally made to feel a part of the growth and success. Where do you see the property market in Brisbane in ten years? ARG work on a national scale across many markets. As such, we are able to step outside the box and observe trends and product types in various capital cities. Aside from the obvious affordability factors which Brisbane offers (certainly over Sydney and Melbourne), we truly are lucky here in SEQ, as Brisbane pushes towards becoming a highly desirable global city. I’ve lived here for most of my life and it’s never been such an exciting place to be. GUNTUR REID AND SEAN PORLIER BRAD HAGLAND

AUSTRALIAN RESIDENTIAL GROUP

BRAD’S FAVES Favourite bars? Eleven Rooftop Bar, Brooklyn Standard, Mr Mista, Blackbird Favourite restaurant? Montrachet, Stokehouse, Jellyfish, Honto, LongTime and The Fish House Favourite Brisbane icon? Story Bridge and South Bank Favourite weekend destination? Sunshine Coast, Sydney and Melbourne Favourite overseas destination? Europe and Asia Favourite bloke? My Dad

Headed up by Guntur Reid and Sean Porlier (pictured), ARG work with professional partners, whether it be planners, accountants or finance brokers to augment their businesses and provide them a turn key property service they can extend to their clients. Their focus is in understanding the partners’ business, client needs and sales process to ensure a personalised fit. Smooth clean transactions and high service levels has grown ARG’s relationships with top development brands, leading them to assist earlier in the development phase, specifically through site acquisitions where Brad heads up the Acquisition Team and has achieved over $50M in sales in the first 12 months. ARG’s rapid growth has been acknowledged in Australian Financial Review Fast Starters list in 2018. ARG.PROPERTY

The Coast with the most Style Media’s founder and magazine Editor Tracy Sinclair, lives on the Gold Coast and shares some of her fave local places to eat, drink and play. I love the new Harvest Buffet at The Star ‘cause it keeps both hubby and I happy. The weekend seafood buffet is excellent. It’s reasonably priced ($50.90) and also has an extensive selection of non-seafood dishes. Make sure you book in advance if you’re not a VIP card holder. My favourite weekend thing is a nice long bike ride to Burleigh and back. When friends and family come to town I take them to Rick Shores (and now I’ll add The Fish House - see my article on page 36). I’m yet to try the Burleigh Pavilion, but that’s on my list for a Saturday afternoon session. I really like the laidback vibe at The Island rooftop bar. It’s in my hood, so I can walk there and it is so relaxed -

and has amazing cocktails. I also love the funghi wood fired pizza at Goldie’s restaurant downstairs. Etsu Izakaya modern Japanese at Mermaid Beach is one of my all-time fave restaurants. You might have to ask a local where it is, because this popular restaurant and bar has no signage except for a red lantern (it’s hidden behind a nondescript barn door). Once inside the decor is super cool and the food is INSANE! (Another sensational Japanese restaurant is the iconic Yamagen restaurant at QT Hotel). With live tunes, jugs of sangria and tasty tacos, Frida Sol in Palm Beach is one of my favourite spots on the coast for a Sunday sesh. Hola!

nspired by the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, the owners of The Pink Hotel nailed the relaxed Cali style in the heart of Coolangatta with lit-up palm trees surrounding the hotel. The boutique 18-room hotel (formerly Coolangatta Ocean View Motel) received a fresh coat of pink paint and refurbishment back in October last year to restore the original building with a hell of a lot more character. Each room is filled with groovy interiors to make your stay ever so enjoyable, as well as matching flamingo robes, neon lights, record players with some classic vinyls, Yamaha speakers and Smeg fridges stocked with beer. Despite only opening its doors six months ago, the hotel has already been host to many epic parties on the coast including Tammy Hembrow’s Saski Collection Neon Party launch and the Abrand Jeans X TJ Swim End of Summer Party, which a few of our Stylers nabbed an invite to, and we must say they sure do know how to hold a party!

PAGE 34

@ADAMANONUEVO

Each weekend, the hotel comes to life with guests from all over keen for a good time! The Santeria rooftop with ocean views has cabanas for you to laze on while sunbaking and sipping on cocktails from their upstairs bar. If you’re not so keen on the sun, there’s a speakeasy piano bar disguised as a ‘Janitor’s Closet’ hidden in the building or head down to Eddie’s Grubhouse for a boogie, live music, karaoke and finger-lickin’ burgers. Although being an epic party pad, the laid-back vibe makes for a relaxing holiday too if that’s more your cup of tea! Escape to the beach only 50 metres away and be sure to go for a morning hike around the headland to catch the surfers going for their morning ride. t’s Friday afternoon at The Fish House. It’s bustling, even for an overcast day – they’re gearing up for the Friday afternoon crowd. I’m greeted by owner Ronnie Tarabay, who I haven’t seen in years. We take a seat and Ronnie brings me up to speed. He’s in property construction, but just like the guy who “loved the shaver so much, he bought the company”, Ronnie loved the Fish House, so he bought it. My girlfriends Janine and Jodie arrive and we are seated at a front table with a magnificent view of the beach. The restaurant offers fine dining, yet has an unpretentious groove. It feels like I’m sitting in a large Queenslander, with open windows letting plenty of light in and of course that view. “Why have we not been here before?” we ask each other. My answer is easy – my hubby doesn’t eat seafood, so sadly, it hasn’t been on our list (although now I know they do have a Wagyu steak on the menu). I, on the other hand, love seafood and can’t wait to see why The Fish House is one of the most awarded seafood restaurants on the GC. Head Chef Jon Nurninen and his team has created an enviable menu – it’s the type of menu where every dish sounds mouthwateringly divine, making it difficult to choose just one. Thankfully, the kitchen curates a selection of entrees for us while we scan the menu for our mains. The girls opt for Mahi Mahi Schnitzel and the Blue Eye Trevalla. I’m still stuck so Ronnie comes to the rescue, “Trace, try the Patagonian Tooth Fish, you’ll love it.” PAGE 36

We’re presented with a Simple Lemony Fish Soup to start. “I would come back just for this soup alone”, Janine says. The waiter explains that it is indeed a crowd favourite, having been on the menu since the founding owner, Simon Gloftis. It was his grandmother’s recipe and was so popular, it became a mainstay. Some things you just can’t mess with. The selection of entrees is sublime – Heirloom tomatoes with Burrata (I don’t know where I’ve been, but I’ve only recently discovered Burrata!), Raw Kingfish with a Squid Ink Cracker and my favourite – Pan Seared Scallops from Abrolhos Island, in WA. The seafood is super fresh (as you would expect), the spices are delicate and don’t overpower the seafood, so you can actually taste it. I grew up eating a lot of raw seafood, (my dad and uncles would go diving for fresh shellfish) so I really like to taste the seafood, not have it smothered with sauces. And Ronnie’s right – I do love the Patagonian Tooth Fish. It’s marinated in miso and sake – a beautiful combination, yet the fish shines through. Served with sides of roasted potatoes, seasonal greens and cos lettuce, the mains are light and delicious. Crumbed, char-grilled or marinated – each of our fish choices are outstanding. We opt for a cocktail over dessert – and why not? It’s Friday, I’m with my girls, we’ve enjoyed sensational seafood and it’s been a

lovely afternoon catching up. The Fish House has now been added to our list of ‘girl’s lunch’ favourites. And again, Burleigh has shown why its dining reputation is so enviable across the Gold Coast and beyond. THE FISH HOUSE 50 GOODWIN TCE, BURLEIGH HEADS P 5535 7725 THEFISHHOUSE.COM.AU

Pong is the epic new gaming lounge tucked away on Kessels Road, MacGregor. Making use of the very latest gaming technology, iPong incorporates PongConnect™, an app and interactive gaming table system that allows you to play Beer Pong in a brand new way. As the first of its kind to hit Australia, this is a venue where enthusiasm is encouraged, letting you battle it out with your mates and hone your beer pong skills into the early hours of the morning. So, how does it work? Styler Emily and I took our chances at a game of our own, ready to unwind after a busy day at work. First up, we downloaded the PongConnect™ app and created our own accounts. They then appeared on the screens around us, as we began stretching, getting ready for the biggest battle of our lives. We chose ‘count-up’, a point-based system rather than the traditional challenge that we were oh-so accustomed to. Laughter filled the neon venue as we switched between turns, throwing as if our life depended on it. While my aim wasn’t overly straight, it was seriously entertaining fetching balls from around the room. Either way, I came out on top with a digital beer pong victory under my belt. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

If a game of digital beer pong isn’t thrilling enough for you, you can up the stakes and enter into iPong’s round robin competitions and win cash prizes. Still buzzing after our game of digital beer pong, we were ready for another challenge. In between nibbling on popcorn chicken bites and onion rings, we decided it would be criminal to leave without a game of darts. We headed over to the DartsLive2™ dart machines, our hearts set on getting a bullseye. The challenge was real, and the pressure was on as we switched turns, getting used to this new and exciting digital experience. I definitely didn’t expect the plastic darts to whizz through the air faster than I could say kill-shot. This neon venue is a gaming wonderland and is the perfect location for your next night out. With a private function room upstairs with its very own PongConnect™ table, you can seriously level-up your next beer pong competition. Officially open to the public on 26 April, round up the team and enjoy an evening of digital gaming, delicious bites, cocktails, and tap beer. Instant coffee is making a comeback

Connect more, live longer

Keeping your teeth tackle-proof

Wolff Coffee Roasters is delighted to announce the release of a limited edition Specialty Instant Coffee ready for purchase in April. Wolff introduced “Instant Wolff ” in November last year, selling out in just a few days, and breaking down perceptions that instant is for the non-coffee aficionado. This coffee is convenient, low fuss, and can produce a beautiful liquor that can be made to your liking at home or work, while camping, or over the Easter long weekend. Wolff Coffee Roasters takes the highest quality beans from coffee farmer Boyce Harries at Chania Estate in Kenya, and roasts them with care and attention at their own roastery in Hendra. It is then rested, brewed and freeze dried, before being decanted into small batches and stored in airtight jars ready for your procurement. Flavours you can expect include stewed fruits and light berry acidity, dry cocoa, with a delicious treacle and dark caramel viscosity.

Social isolation can put your health and wellbeing at a significant risk. Humans are social animals and have a primitive, biological need to be in contact with others. How you stay connected to extended family and friends in the community can often be a strong predictor for how healthy you are and how long you’ll live. These connections involve face-to-face personal relationships, not connections in the digital space. In-person interactions release a range of neurotransmitters, which increase positive feelings, reduces stress, and improve health. Establishing and maintaining these relationships takes effort, but is definitely worth it. To decrease loneliness and enhance social integration, reconnect with old acquaintances and extended family, join a club, enrol in an education course, spend time at local hangouts, get out and about exploring, or volunteer.

While contact sports are a lot of fun to play, they can unfortunately come with the risk of injury. By playing a contact sport, you are increasing the risk of severe damage to the lips, teeth and jaw. Not only can these injuries be very painful, they can also be quite expensive and incredibly difficult to fix. Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard is the best way to ensure your teeth are safe from damage, and are protected from the type of injuries that can be caused by forceful contact. By wearing a mouthguard during contact sport, any force directed to the mouth area is absorbed, helping to disperse the intensity of the impact and prevent injury. James Street Dentists can make mouthguards specifically designed for any mouth shape, allowing you to breathe easily throughout your game, keep maximum comfort, and most importantly, protect your teeth, lips and jaw from damage.

VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp

PLASTIC SURGERY with Dr Matthew Peters

But wait, there’s more

Are they just old wives tales?

Preparation is always key

Do you get frustrated when someone you know is talking, and you can’t wait to get a word in? Are you always keen to talk over the top of people, or end their sentences for them? Or perhaps those around you are annoyed at you for your lack of patience? Here’s a little tip; count to three before you speak. By doing this, you might be surprised to learn that a lot of what someone wants to say is often at the end of them speaking. When you think they have finished, just wait on the count of three and see if they have anything else to say. You could learn something new, you might hear something you like, or perhaps find out something you need to hear. Pausing before responding gives the other person the impression you care and are listening. It shows them that they matter, and that what they have to say is important. You’ll feel this same way when others give you their attention.

People frequently wonder if crossing their legs causes varicose veins, or if their veins will become more visible if they wear heels every day – so here’s what you need to know. While the act of crossing your legs does not cause varicose veins, predisposition to other factors may cause a minimal increase of risk. If you stay healthy and active you can defer veins from forming. However, wearing high heels can increase your risk of venous disease, as high heels change the natural walking motion, shifting weight to the forefoot, causing calf muscles to remain contracted. This results in blood pooling in the leg and placing increased strain on the valves in your veins. If you constantly cross your legs or wear high heels, try to make an effort to stretch and massage your legs, mix up your footwear, and walk for a least 30 minutes a day. This will ensure your calves are pumping blood back up your circulatory system.

Undergoing a breast reduction is a personal decision, and for most women it can be life altering. Your breast size, shape, and position evolve throughout life, and the decision to do something about heavy, oversized breasts is often made at a point of frustration. To achieve the best results from this procedure, it’s important breast and body size are stable. Pubertal development, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations and menopause can all affect the outcome of your reduction, so it’s important to undergo this procedure when factors are constant. A thorough enquiry into these factors should be undertaken during your consultation with a specialist plastic surgeon, and a good result from breast reduction surgery is always expected if the conditions are right. Any surgery or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified medical practitioner.

Trainer to the STARS Celebrity trainer Amber Walker, reveals the 10-minute health habits that you can start today. WORDS BY JASMINE ROLFE

I

PAGE 46

10-MINUTE HEALTH HABITS Move it or lose it The primary principle is to make the best of what time is available to you. Whether that be 10 minutes in the morning to quickly walk around the block, just do it. It’s typical of us to say “oh but I only have ten minutes, I’m not going to bother”, but what’s the alternative? You lose 10 minutes sitting around when you could’ve quickly moved your body. A few of the celebrities I’ve trained would only have a short amount of time between takes and their schedules are often jam-packed but they get it done anyway and it all adds up. AMBER WALKER WITH TESSA THOMPSON

t’s not every day that a Hollywood heavyweight film shuts down half of Brisbane CBD but when Thor: Ragnarok rolled into town, the city flocked to get a piece of the action; and that’s exactly what they got – action. Training for a blockbuster movie such as Thor is no walk in the park, as Celebrity Personal Trainer Amber Walker reveals, though achieving Chris Hemsworth’s Adonis-like physique is not necessarily the goal for individuals on a day-to-day basis. “I’ve worked on movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean [Dead Men Tell No Tales] and Thor: Ragnarok and would be training some of the actors and actresses in their house first thing in the morning before shooting, in-between takes and again in the evenings,” Amber says. “But the intense training and nutrition regimen involved in preparing for a movie, particularly superhero roles, is just not achievable for the majority of us. Unless you’re flying around on wires for long periods of time, then you don’t necessarily need it.” However as Amber explains, there are certainly many underlying healthy habits that she upholds regardless of whether she’s training a celebrity, one of her day-to-day clients or herself.

Take ten to plan An advantage of training for a movie role is the personal chef whose focus is on planning out and providing you with wholesome, nutritious meals for the week (a girl can dream right?). Obviously most of us don’t have that luxury, however the principle remains the same. It’s all in the planning which may only take ten minutes on a Sunday to accomplish. Take this time to decide which meals you’ll have for dinner each night, as this is where many individuals become unstuck after a tiring day at work.

10 greens in 10 weeks Consuming enough crunchy, nutritious greens is a sticking point for many people. My challenge for you is to try and consciously add one (extra) veggie into your diet each week, for 10 weeks and physically feel the boost in your energy. Not only that but rich, deep greens like spinach and kale are known to do wonders for brightening your complexion. Try coating some kale in extra virgin olive oil and Himalayan salt, before baking them in the oven. You’ll find the texture is similar to potato chips and you could even dip them in some hummus!

Total rejuvenation Bespoke treatments to enhance your skin, and renew your inner confidence.

A

s a premium and bespoke medical aesthetics brand, Artisan Clinics offers luxurious skin treatments that use the latest science and technology to achieve significant results. With a medical focus behind everything they do, each clinic employs a trained and knowledgeable team of doctors, nurses and dermal therapists, rather than beauty therapists, to ensure the treatments you receive not only make you feel good, but will help you achieve targeted and ongoing results. Breaking into the Australian market last year, Artisan Clinics established themselves with a philosophy in mind to empower people to look and feel confident in their own skin. Their main focus is always on achieving the results you desire, and they do so by conducting in-depth and scientifically backed consultations, before creating a completely tailored treatment plan. It’s incredibly important to Artisan that your treatment does more than make you feel relaxed and refreshed. Your treatment, whether it involves microdermabrasion, LED light treatment, or a chemical peel, will work through each layer of the skin, ensuring specific areas are targeted, and you leave with the best results. By taking into consideration factors such as your current skincare routine, previous health history, day to day life, and the medications and vitamins you may take, they will work with you to achieve your desired result, focusing on the medical elements, as well as the aesthetic.

THE TREATMENT Styler Laura put Artisan’s knowledge to the test. Upon entering the spa, I was greeted by a bubbly clinic manager who directed me to the cosy waiting area to chill out with a warm STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

cup of tea before starting my consultation. After a brief chat about my treatment with a few small details entered into an iPad, I was led by my dermal therapist, Tali, through the beautifully designed clinic to my private treatment room. The clinic itself was breathtaking, covered in beautiful green colours and plenty of plants, reflecting the leafy suburb of Rosalie which they are located in. With touches of gold and brass here and there, and an incredibly crisp and clean finish, it’s exactly what you’d expect from such a luxurious space. Once settled in the room, Tali discussed my skin concerns, and educated me on how even the slightest external factors can have an affect on how my skin will react to various treatments. I learnt that the products I was using were only skimming the surface of my skin, creating more of a film than actually penetrating into the deeper layers, and Tali showed me an incredible diagram that illustrated the various layers of my skin, and how different types of skincare can only reach so far. I explained to Tali that my main concerns were dryness and dullness. She recommended we use a few Rationale and DMK products throughout my treatment, and mentioned I should incorporate them into my current skincare routine to achieve further results. While my skin is still quite young, our objective for the session was to increase clarity and brightness, and essentially have me leave with glowing skin. To achieve this, Tali recommended we begin with a AFTER Rational cleansing facial and a mini peel to remove any dead skin and dirt, followed by an ultrasound to promote blood flow, increase hydration, and give my skin a youthful glow. To finish, I underwent an LED light facial for 15 minutes, to give some much needed TLC and bring back the vibrancy to my skin. TO FIND OUT HOW THE TREATMENT WENT, READ MORE ONLINE.

Body contouring

DR RAYMOND GOH

Dr Raymond Goh from Valley Plastic Surgery explains how the body can be reshaped after significant weight loss. Obesity has become one of modern society’s inevitable epidemics. Thankfully, there is now a rise in the number of people who are bucking the trend and accomplishing significant weight loss in their lives, whether through natural means of diet and exercise, or after undergoing weight loss surgery. Although weight loss contributes positively to general wellbeing, it can also cause the body to deflate, resulting in loose and saggy skin. This can cause tremendous cosmetic deformity, as well as pain and discomfort, as the skin begins to fold and rub on itself, and psychologically, can often be more harmful for the patient than when they were overweight. Body contouring surgery encapsulates a range of surgical procedures aimed at STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

improving and restoring the body’s shape after significant weight loss. Common procedures that fall into this category include tummy tucks, lower body lifts, breast lifts, and arm and thigh lifts. These procedures generally involve the removal of large areas of skin, therefore extensive scarring is often one of the trade-offs patients need to accept. As a silver lining, though, these scars will fade, and are usually placed strategically to minimise their visibility. Body contouring is considered major surgery, and is not without its risks. In preparing for this type of surgery, it is best that the patient has reached and is stable in their goal weight, lives an active healthy lifestyle, and has eliminated risk factors such

as smoking. They should maintain a positive mindset during recovery, and be focused and motivated by the final outcome, which will close the final chapter in their weight loss journey. READ MORE ONLINE VALLEY PLASTIC SURGERY 51 BALLOW ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 3488 8118 VALLEYPLASTICSURGERY.COM.AU

Expert hair Owner of Revolution Hairdressing, Andre Faiva, chats to us about 2019 hair trends, hair care, and cult must-have products. What are your current MVP products? Sebastian Dark Oil! It’s a beautiful conditioning oil that leaves the hair feeling luscious and smooth. It’s great for balayaged ends and it smells divine. What are your favourite trends this season? Volume, curls, natural waves and layering are the looks that are rampant through the catwalks and magazines. Because of this, perms are making a comeback for those fashionistas looking to really embrace the movement. Think Natasha Lyonne from Netflix’s Russian Doll. What’s your most valuable tip for caring for your hair? For me, the most important one is to always work with what you have. The more you stray away from your natural texture, the more effort and time you have to put into your hair. This usually means more blowdrying and more heat styling, which will always PAGE 50

compromise the condition of your hair. What is your biggest career achievement? Opening our Revolution Salons has been amazing, and I’ve also won QLD Hairdresser of the Year and worked backstage at New York Fashion week. But the biggest, personally, would be being named as a finalist for Australian Hairdresser of the Year at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards and Hair Expo, as it’s the biggest competition in our industry. What excites you about owning a hair salon? It’s so rewarding for us as a salon to watch clients transform in front of our eyes, and then bounce out the door feeling a million bucks. The ability to make a real change in people’s lives is incredibly rewarding and exciting. Should you arrive at appointments with clean or dirty hair? As long as it is not filthy, most stylists don’t mind. For me personally,

OWNER ANDRE FAIVA

I like my clients to turn up with how they would normally style their hair. It gives you an idea of what they do and what they can do with their hair. Your hair...should work with you and your lifestyle. Who do you dream to work your magic on? Cara Delevingne, because she is fearless with her style and can pull anything off. Or Anna Wintour, I’d love to get rid of that helmet like bob she’s had for 30 years. APRIL 2019

Argan brilliance After relocating her family to Brisbane from the UK in 2002, Shirley Piscina’s mission was to change lives through the power of argan oil. We chat to Shirley about how she started Silk Oil of Morocco, the brand that’s revolutionising the beauty industry.

SHIRLEY PISCINA

Tell us about how Silk Oil of Morocco began? It all started when I stumbled upon a bottle of pure argan oil that helped me with some of my own skin issues. Fast forward to now and we have an amazing product and very loyal customers who are just as passionate as us. What are the benefits of argan oil? Argan oil is one of the most versatile, lightweight and pure oils available on the market today. Our argan oil is cold pressed and certified organic, meaning it is not boiled like many traditional oils. Therefore, the nutrients are kept super rich and full of vitamins, antioxidants, omega-6 and omega-9 and deliver incredible results when applied to both hair and skin. Do you have a favourite product to recommend? My daily routine consists of our Argan Gel Facial Wash, followed by the Pure Argan Oil (which is perfect as a night cream or intense moisturiser). For a full and flawless coverage, I love our Cream Compact Foundation! How do you keep things fresh, and continue to find the inspiration to bring out beautiful products? My inspiration comes from my customers! Their comments inspire me to continue developing new products all the time. I also keep up-to-date

Call us on 3375 9896

with today’s consumer. It is so important to listen to what people are asking for. For people just starting to try argan oil, what do you think they should try first? Our bestselling product is the Silk Argan Hair & Skin Treatment Serum. It’s super versatile and so unique, I don’t know any other serum that does both! Tell us a bit more about the charities you support? We are huge supporters of charities that empower and elevate women like the National Breast Cancer Foundation and White Ribbon Australia. Both organisations do incredible work and are ones that resonate most with our brand ethics. We have also developed a series of cause products too, with a percentage of sale profits going back to these charities. What’s next for Silk Oil of Morocco? We are really excited to be launching a brand new ecommerce solution at the beginning of April where industry trade professionals will be able to ‘drop ship’ product to their customers from the comfort of their home or salon. We’re also working on a new innovative skincare range, including an argan men’s range. Watch this space. SILK OIL OF MOROCCO SILKOILOFMOROCCO.COM.AU

ADVENTURE

ANGKOR WAT TEMPLE, SIEM REAP

Styler Melissa Myrteza travelled from Brisbane to Cambodia, to follow the work of the Bodia Group.

A

s we booked our flights, destined for Phnom Penh, Cambodia, I couldn’t help but think about the stigma surrounding voluntourism. Cambodia isn’t your usual Asian destination, with the majority of holidayers choosing Bali and Thailand for their budget getaways. But we were on a more directed mission. We were there representing The Bodia Group, a Brisbane based not-for-profit organisation that supports education and invests in sustainable social enterprise in Cambodia. Established by the Sinclair siblings in 2015, their Cambodian trips have become an annual occurrence, the development of which can be followed

DRAGONFLY BAR, KOH RONG SANLOEM

through their Instagram handle @TheBodiaGroup. I arrived in Phnom Penh with six friends, there to support the Bodia Group. Travelling alongside the founder of the organisation, our goals were to finalise university scholarships, evaluate the success of their first farm development project, and to engage in English and conversation classes for nine days. Our very first tuktuk through the bustling, underdeveloped city was an accurate introduction to the Cambodian lifestyle. It was easy to understand Cambodia’s failing government in the unpaved streets, the makeshift homes THE BODIA GROUP’S FARM DEVELOPMENT PROJECT, TAKEO PROVINCE

PAGE 54

and the scattered mounds of rubbish. With this in mind, we left our hostel and began the hour-long tuk-tuk to SCCDO, the Save the Children Community Development Organisation. We were ready to make a localised, tangible difference on the ground by encouraging development through learning. It was humbling to know that English, being a powerful skill to these young Cambodian’s was something we were able to provide. SCCDO was filled with 15 smiling faces aged 9 to 19. All at different stages in their lives, these children were there for various reasons, equally benefitting from their improved access to quality schooling, shelter and brighter future prospects. English is used in the majority of Cambodian industries and makes for better job opportunities. So, we spent the next 10 days following a succinct English curriculum, spending several hours a day teaching and reinforcing sentence structure, pronunciation and readability. It is these skills and this type of volunteering that can give disadvantaged children an advantage in the future. However, the poverty was something we only really understood when faced with the confronting reality of a makeshift room bursting with bunk beds and a large rice cooker filled daily only from the generosity of two senior Norwegian philanthropists. APRIL 2019

—EXPLORE

For our next stop, we began the two-hour drive to the Takeo province, visiting the farm developed by the Bodia Group. Built with funds raised from the 2017 Bodia Ball to render the local organisation financially independent, we were taken on a perimeter tour to evaluate farm updates, taught to fish with rice balls and fed fresh farm-grown chicken, Cambodian-style. Back in Phnom Penh, we continued exploring the city by day, indulging in traditional meals like Fish Amok and Morning Glory. To mix things up we even decided to opt for a night of luxury at the end of our Phomn Penh stretch on Valentine’s Day. Having our own private pool was a luxury that was both affordable and tranquil. From there on out we said our goodbyes to SCCDO and Phnom Penh to get to know Cambodia a bit better. We soon arrived in Siem Reap, experiencing one of the wonders of the world at sunrise. Walking across a bridge and through an ancient temple with hundreds of others in the dark hours of the morning was an experience I won’t forget any time soon. Neither will I forgot the soft glow of the morning sun first illuminating Angkor Wat. Koh Rong was our next stop, but we now had a few additions. We brought along the manager of SCCDO and his wife to accompany us on this island adventure, for a break from their daily routines of looking after the children. For a true island experience, we all stayed in raised beach bungalows just metres from the water. Sandy beaches and translucent water paired

with fresh seafood barbeques made for a relaxing end to our trip. On the island, we took a boat trip led by a pirate (one eye, no joke), and a lot of whiskey. Snorkelling at nature reserves with colourful coral and small fish was definitely a highlight, as was the surprise blood moon on our return home! As we walked the beach with our bags, beginning the long journey home, we were reminiscing on the best moments, already planning our return trip. We were missing SCCDO but thankful for the work we did and the adventures we had.

TRAVEL

UNEXPECTED

Luxury

Sometimes you don’t have to travel long distances to experience luxury. Styler Gracie Clough recently visited Townsville’s multi-million dollar resort and discovered that luxury can be found in unexpected places.

I

n the heart of the Queensland tropics sits a town recently ravished by mother nature’s forces. Only a matter of weeks ago, floodwaters left sunny Townsville underwater and unrecognisable. The usual turquoise skies turned dark grey, homes and memories were washed away and – tragically – precious lives were lost. Because of this, holidaying in Townsville felt bittersweet. While the raw emotion of utter devastation is still alive, I felt the town deserved, more than ever, to be put on the map again. Although Townsville may not be a top-of-mind destination for luxury holiday seekers, the town is home to one of Australia’s most deluxe resorts – The Ville Resort and Casino. Recently having undergone a transformative $43 million redevelopment, The Ville showcases unbelievable views of Magnetic Island and the Coral Sea and boasts world-class interiors for the ultimate resort feel.

PAGE 56

DAY 1 I was welcomed to The Ville on a cloudy Friday afternoon with 90-something-percent humidity in the air. The resort’s paradiso décor and genuine greetings from the friendly staff instantly transported me worlds away to a tropical nirvana. It was almost hard to believe I had only spent two hours on a plane to get here, and who could blame me? My thoughts about luxury destinations were typically reserved for the exotic countries that clog up my social media feeds. To set the tone for a weekend of indulgence, a DIY Tiki Cocktail and delicious cheese spread was left in my suite for my arrival. Not one to turn down a beverage, I poured in the fruity cocktail mixture, clapped in a sprig of mint and scoped out the room. I appreciated the spacious rooms that perfectly combine traditional Queenslander style interiors with clean modern elements; a style which is constant throughout the resort.

A trip to The Ville isn’t complete without tasting the Asian cuisine from Miss Song’s. The restaurant has made a name for itself by taking guests on a culinary journey by re-creating traditional dishes in a fresh and flavourful way. Combined with impeccable service, a chic restaurant layout and buzzing atmosphere, Miss Song’s is a must-visit for an all-round satisfying dining experience. Top food picks: Dishes such as duck san choi bao, salt and pepper calamari with spicy chilli salt, steamed barramundi with ginger and light soy and a scotch fillet hot plate with Cantonese sauce leave a lasting impression on the taste buds.

DAY 2 My first official day in Townsville began on the gloomy side, making for the perfect excuse to spend the morning indulging in fresh local produce at The Palm House restaurant’s breakfast buffet. The Palm House’s aesthetically magnificent light tones and gold finishings truly set the scene for what was to be a culinary showcase. With an interactive live cooking station, a fridge full of freshly squeezed juices, and all of my usual simple breakfast favourites, The Palm House buffet proved to be in a league of its own. Once the sun finally shone over Townsville, I embarked on a five-minute walk to the ferry that would take me across to Magnetic Island. After twenty minutes of admiring stellar water views from the ferry window, I made it to dry land and was ready to explore Horsehoe Bay. With magnificent views of natural wonders, an average of 320 sunny days each year, endless watersport offerings, twenty-three beaches and delicious cafes like Barefoot Art Food Wine,

one can see why Magnetic Island is a global tourist hotspot. Tip: If you are feeling the heat, cool down with a few scoops of sorbet from Adele’s Café – just be sure to eat it quickly before you wear it. To recharge after a day of exploring, I made my way back to The Ville’s laid-back Saturday night watering hole, Quarterdeck. Overlooking the resort’s show-stopping aqua infinity pool and Magnetic Island, Quarterdeck was the perfect afternoon spot to enjoy a few cocktails and a tapas plate while watching the sun disappear for another day.

DAY 3 To top off a weekend of indulgence, I spent my final morning around one of The Ville’s decadent poolside cabanas. With a jug of Pimm’s in one hand and a platter full of cheese and fruit in the other, there was no way I was complaining. Just to add that personal touch, each cabana came fully equipped with Bluetooth sound systems to ensure that the vibe was always just right. The odd green tree frog cameo provided that much needed reminder that I was – in fact – still totally immersed in some of nature’s greatest offerings.

Jetting off Brisbane Airport is changing the way Brisbanites fly, with a new runway set to open next year. The latest Brisbane Airport news may have flown under your radar, so we thought we’d share the excitement. That construction you’ve been driving past on your way to Arrivals is, in fact, a new runway that’s been in the works since 2012. Officially announced as one of the largest aviation construction projects in Australia, Brisbane’s new 3.3-kilometre runway is set to take off in 2020, meaning even more flights will be able to come in and out of our airport. This $1.3 billion aeronautical project has been funded by Brisbane Airport Corporation, with full approvals from necessary environmental assessments, received back in 2015. This 24-hour gateway is set to increase flight traffic to the airport, putting Brisbane on the

map to our international friends heading down under. Forward planning was heavily at work here, with the preparation actually beginning in the 1970s, where land was allocated for the future expansion of the airport. Being the largest capital city airport by size in Australia, the new parallel runway is only two kilometres in distance from the existing

SHORT

runway. This taxiway means that vehicles won’t have to cross runways, and that flight capacity can essentially be doubled. As it will be operating independently, this will allow for further terminal development down the spine between the runways, meaning more retailers are set to be introduced as well. Watch out Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane is growing.

5 mintues with International Floral Designer at Maison Fleur, Bart Hassam. Where are you from? Bundaberg, Qld. How long have you been in the floristry industry? I made my first wedding bouquet for a family wedding when I was 13, and have been working in florists since I was 17. I’m now 42. How did you get into it? My grandmother had a huge garden and we would garden together every Saturday. She’d teach me plant names and how to arrange flowers. Top pick for Mother’s Day? Flowers that she really loves. It’s usually the older ‘garden’ flowers that evoke the most emotions and bring back memories, like dahlia, stock or sweet pea. Will you be gifting your mum flowers? A florist’s mother knows they’ll be lucky to even see their child near Mother’s Day – let alone get flowers. But, she loves oldPAGE 58

fashioned roses, so I usually go with those somewhere before or after. Mothers are understanding! Best piece of advice you’ve been given? Trust in the process. Any plans for 2019? Having won the World Cup of Floral Design in the US this month, I have invitations to teach all over the world. I’m hoping to travel to Japan, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, America, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Estonia. We are also looking to open a third studio later in 2019. Sum up Maison Fleur in 3 words: Classic, stylish, elegant. Why do you think people love giving and receiving flowers on Mother’s Day? Giving flowers reminds us of nature and of the kindness in giving a gift to someone that actually has emotional weight. APRIL 2019
