You’ve probably heard of feng shui but are unsure of what it means or how you can incorporate it into your own home. Feng shui can be summarised as a traditional Chinese practice that uses spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to energy and flow within spaces. There are many ways you can incorporate traditional feng shui values into your modern home and today I will share my favourite ways to do so.
One of the key principles when it comes to feng shui is to incorporate all five elements of wood, fire, metal, water, and wind into a space. It is believed that a space can feel off balance and out of alignment if there is an element missing. In decorating terms, we can relate metal and wood to our furniture pieces and hardware, fire and water can be seen in paint colours and the colours of finishes, and wind can relate to flow and how airy a space feels. I suggest observing the spaces in your home and taking note of the different finishes, the colour palette and the flow throughout. Be sure to explore what pieces you could add to bring more balance.
Another key feng shui principle I use when designing spaces such as home offices and living rooms is to ensure you are not seated with your back facing the doorway. It is thought that if you are seated with your back to the door you are in a vulnerable position and your mind will subconsciously know this and it may result in you feeling unsteady or slightly on edge whilst in the room.
Plants are another element I like to add to any space I design as they represent energy, life, and vitality – all good things you want to incorporate into your home! The best plants to use are ferns, bonsai trees, and palms for air purifying, prosperity, and protective energy. I recommend avoiding any spiky plants and being sure to cut off dead leaves as your plant grows.
While the term ‘romantic style’ may conjure images of crimson reds and heart motifs, the modern iteration of this aesthetic takes a more subdued approach, offering a more nostalgic yet sophisticated feel. The trend has recently taken off thanks to a resurgence of hyper-femininity across various industries. In the interiors space, classical furnishings are making a comeback, but with a contemporary and abstract twist. Essentially, the new romantics trend reimagines elements of the past, giving them a polished and updated look.
Achieve the romanticism trend by embracing four key elements; emotions, imagination, individual freedom, and nature. It’s all about creating a space that feels nostalgic – think delicate lace curtains billowing gently in the breeze, vintage-inspired furnishings boasting ornate detailing, and dainty accents that transport you to a bygone era. Be sure to stick with soft, muted tones of dusty pinks, pale blues, lavenders, and ivory.

Balance form and function by selecting furniture pieces that have embossed finishes, shakerstyle detailing, and plenty of drawer space for storage. I love selecting a bedside table or dresser in a feminine style and contrasting it with a simple bed head or bed frame for a contemporary look.
Once confined to industrial environments, polished silver and metallics are now making their mark as tasteful additions to many homes. A notable shift towards deeper colour palettes has prompted the inclusion of chrome to balance rooms, infusing spaces with a touch of contemporary flair. Think cool, sleek, and undeniably modern.
When it comes to pulling off the chrome trend in a fresh and modern way, it’s all about pairing. A room full of polished or unfinished aluminium can feel cold and sterile, but adding a touch of it can make all the difference. Select a focal piece of furniture or stick with smaller items such as lanterns and clocks.

Chrome, brass, and gold finishes add a sense of luxury and glamour to any space. I love using metallic finishes in entertaining areas such as living rooms and dining rooms to bring a pop of glamour to the space. Try adding a metal tray with a cocktail-making set and some beautiful crystal glasses to your buffet or keep it simple and opt for a beautiful brass table lamp.
For centuries, furniture has been designed with ruler straight precision and hard angles but in recent years, we’ve been seeing a shift to more subtle silhouettes featuring organic and sculptural elements. The trend brings with it a gentle and comforting vibe to interior winters – perhaps it’s the way that curved furnishings seem to hug and invite you in.
Rounded edges and curved silhouettes are becoming more and more popular each season. I always opt for round coffee tables in a living room as they create more flow within a space, encourage movement, and evoke a welcoming atmosphere. Marble or stone round coffee tables are huge this winter and we are seeing so many beautiful options in a number of our retailers.
There’s no denying that curves add visual appeal to just about any room, but for the most effective integration of rounded pieces, open-plan spaces are ideal. It’s these spaces that call for modular sofas, curvaceous dining tables, and statement lighting fixtures.

Instead, it’s more about embracing winter’s natural light and working to amplify it on those darker days.
