You’ve probably heard of feng shui but are unsure of what it means or how you can incorporate it into your own home. Feng shui can be summarised as a traditional Chinese practice that uses spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to energy and flow within spaces. There are many ways you can incorporate traditional feng shui values into your modern home and today I will share my favourite ways to do so.
One of the key principles when it comes to feng shui is to incorporate all five elements of wood, fire, metal, water, and wind into a space. It is believed that a space can feel off balance and out of alignment if there is an element missing. In decorating terms, we can relate metal and wood to our furniture pieces and hardware, fire and water can be seen in paint colours and the colours of finishes, and wind can relate to flow and how airy a space feels. I suggest observing the spaces in your home and taking note of the different finishes, the colour palette and the flow throughout. Be sure to explore what pieces you could add to bring more balance.
Another key feng shui principle I use when designing spaces such as home offices and living rooms is to ensure you are not seated with your back facing the doorway. It is thought that if you are seated with your back to the door you are in a vulnerable position and your mind will subconsciously know this and it may result in you feeling unsteady or slightly on edge whilst in the room.
Plants are another element I like to add to any space I design as they represent energy, life, and vitality – all good things you want to incorporate into your home! The best plants to use are ferns, bonsai trees, and palms for air purifying, prosperity, and protective energy. I recommend avoiding any spiky plants and being sure to cut off dead leaves as your plant grows.
While the term ‘romantic style’ may conjure images of crimson reds and heart motifs, the modern iteration of this aesthetic takes a more subdued approach, offering a more nostalgic yet sophisticated feel. The trend has recently taken off thanks to a resurgence of hyper-femininity across various industries. In the interiors space, classical furnishings are making a comeback, but with a contemporary and abstract twist. Essentially, the new romantics trend reimagines elements of the past, giving them a polished and updated look.
Achieve the romanticism trend by embracing four key elements; emotions, imagination, individual freedom, and nature. It’s all about creating a space that feels nostalgic – think delicate lace curtains billowing gently in the breeze, vintage-inspired furnishings boasting ornate detailing, and dainty accents that transport you to a bygone era. Be sure to stick with soft, muted tones of dusty pinks, pale blues, lavenders, and ivory.

A room full of polished or unfinished aluminium can feel cold and sterile, but adding a touch of it can make all the difference. Use warm-toned globes in your lighting, especially in winter to create a cosy and comfortable atmosphere. Warm lighting instantly makes a space feel calming and creates a warm vibe even on the coldest of days.
Texture plays a crucial role in establishing mood and ambience within an interior. A space adorned with various textures exudes a richness about it, steering clear of any bland simplicity. While every season provides opportunities to embrace texture, winter tends to lend itself particularly well to cosy materials like velvet, faux fur, and chunky knits, perfect for snuggling up.

If you want to dip your toe into the postmodern madness trend, then I suggest starting with home décor pieces first. Add a bold artwork in an array of bright colours above a buffet or bed to create wow factor within a space or place a few brightly coloured vases or books in areas such as the coffee table or bedside table for a styled look.
There’s something to be said about styling a kid’s bedroom or nursery. The space should harmonise with the overall design of your home while also appealing to your child’s imagination. This is where the cottage core trend comes in – with its blend of rustic charm and whimsical details, cottage core offers the perfect balance.
Cottage core celebrates all things rustic and homely. So, to incorporate this trend into your nursery or kids bedroom be sure to display shabby chic frames, florals, wooden accents, patchwork, and woven baskets.
To achieve a cohesive and calming cottage core space I recommend avoiding darker tones and going all in with a pastel and neutral colour palette. Select timber furniture in an oak or soft walnut tone and pair with shades of pastel blue, green and pink for a whimsical look.
