WINTER FENG SHUI with Eliza Grace
You’ve probably heard of feng shui but are unsure of what it means or how you can incorporate it into your own home. Feng shui can be summarised as a traditional Chinese practice that uses spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to energy and flow within spaces. There are many ways you can incorporate traditional feng shui values into your modern home and today I will share my favourite ways to do so.
One of the key principles when it comes to feng shui is to incorporate all five elements of wood, fire, metal, water, and wind into a space. It is believed that a space can feel off balance and out of alignment if there is an element missing. In decorating terms, we can relate metal and wood to our furniture pieces and hardware, fire and water can be seen in paint colours and the colours of finishes, and wind can relate to flow and how airy a space feels. I suggest observing the spaces in your home and taking note of the different finishes, the colour palette and the flow throughout. Be sure to explore what pieces you could add to bring more balance.
Another key feng shui principle I use when designing spaces such as home offices and living rooms is to ensure you are not seated with your back facing the doorway. It is thought that if you are seated with your back to the door you are in a vulnerable position and your mind will subconsciously know this and it may result in you feeling unsteady or slightly on edge whilst in the room.
Plants are another element I like to add to any space I design as they represent energy, life, and vitality – all good things you want to incorporate into your home! The best plants to use are ferns, bonsai trees, and palms for air purifying, prosperity, and protective energy. I recommend avoiding any spiky plants and being sure to cut off dead leaves as your plant grows.
01THE NEW ROMANTICS
While the term ‘romantic style’ may conjure images of crimson reds and heart motifs, the modern iteration of this aesthetic takes a more subdued approach, offering a more nostalgic yet sophisticated feel. The trend has recently taken off thanks to a resurgence of hyper-femininity across various industries. In the interiors space, classical furnishings are making a comeback, but with a contemporary and abstract twist. Essentially, the new romantics trend reimagines elements of the past, giving them a polished and updated look.
THE NEW ROMANTICS
Achieve the romanticism trend by embracing four key elements; emotions, imagination, individual freedom, and nature. It’s all about creating a space that feels nostalgic – think delicate lace curtains billowing gently in the breeze, vintage-inspired furnishings boasting ornate detailing, and dainty accents that transport you to a bygone era. Be sure to stick with soft, muted tones of dusty pinks, pale blues, lavenders, and ivory.

Stylist tips
When selecting furniture in the ‘New Romantics’ style, opt for pieces that have shaker style detailing and embossed finishes. Function does not have to go by the wayside with this ornate trend as you can still achieve a beautiful look whilst having an abundance of storage.

02 TIME TO SHINE
Once confined to industrial environments, polished silver and metallics are now making their mark as tasteful additions to many homes. A notable shift towards deeper colour palettes has prompted the inclusion of chrome to balance rooms, infusing spaces with a touch of contemporary flair. Think cool, sleek, and undeniably modern.
TIME TO SHINE
When it comes to pulling off the chrome trend in a fresh and modern way, it’s all about pairing. A room full of polished or unfinished aluminium can feel cold and sterile, but adding a touch of it can make all the difference. Select a focal piece of furniture or stick with smaller items such as lanterns and clocks.

Stylist tips
Metallic finishes help to add a bit of glamour and shine to any space. Go bold by adding a brass and marble side table to your living room to add a sense of luxury to the space. Metallic finishes work well paired with softer elements, so ensure your space is also decorated with rugs, cushions, and curtains for balance.
03 LET’S ROUND OUT
For centuries, furniture has been designed with ruler straight precision and hard angles but in recent years, we’ve been seeing a shift to more subtle silhouettes featuring organic and sculptural elements. The trend brings with it a gentle and comforting vibe to interior winters – perhaps it’s the way that curved furnishings seem to hug and invite you in.
LET’S ROUND OUT
There’s no denying that curves add visual appeal to just about any room, but for the most effective integration of rounded pieces, open-plan spaces are ideal. It’s these spaces that call for modular sofas, curvaceous dining tables, and statement lighting fixtures.

LIGHTEN UP
When considering lighting in the darker months of the year, it isn’t about trying to recreate summer sunlight. Instead, it’s more about embracing winter’s natural light and working to amplify it on those darker days. Here are some of the best lamps, candles, and hanging fixtures offering ambient light ideal for winter.
Stylist tips
Use warm-toned globes in your lighting, especially in winter to create a cosy and comfortable atmosphere. Warm lighting instantly makes a space feel calming and creates a warm vibe even on the coldest of days.
THE POWER OF TEXTURE
Texture plays a crucial role in establishing mood and ambience within an interior. A space adorned with various textures exudes a richness about it, steering clear of any bland simplicity. While every season provides opportunities to embrace texture, winter tends to lend itself particularly well to cosy materials like velvet, faux fur, and chunky knits, perfect for snuggling up.
ADAIRS04 POSTMODERN MADNESS
Postmodern design arrived on the scene in the 60s as a rebellious response to minimalist aesthetics. Today, it dominates the interior design industry with its hallmark features of vibrant colours, bold patterns, and stark contrasts. The style epitomised by the saying ‘less is a bore,’ is really all about a departure for minimalist principles, moving towards a more dynamic and expressive approach.
POSTMODERN MADNESS
Bright, bold, and slightly absurd – to achieve the postmodern aesthetic, you’ll need to embrace a palette of vibrant hues and eclectic decor. Think quirky decorative pieces, an array of bright colours, hyperrealistic artwork, and unconventional furniture.

Stylist tips
If you want to dip your toe into the postmodern madness trend, then I suggest starting with home décor pieces first. Add a bold artwork in an array of bright colours above a buffet or bed to create wow factor within a space or place a few brightly coloured vases or books in areas such as the coffee table or bedside table for a styled look.
05 COTTAGE CORE
There’s something to be said about styling a kid’s bedroom or nursery. The space should harmonise with the overall design of your home while also appealing to your child’s imagination. This is where the cottage core trend comes in – with its blend of rustic charm and whimsical details, cottage core offers the perfect balance.
COTTAGE CORE
Cottage core celebrates all things rustic and homely. So, to incorporate this trend into your nursery or kids bedroom be sure to display shabby chic frames, florals, wooden accents, patchwork, and woven baskets.
Stylist tips
To achieve a cohesive and calming cottage core space I recommend avoiding darker tones and going all in with a pastel and neutral colour palette. Select timber furniture in an oak or soft walnut tone and pair with shades of pastel blue, green and pink for a whimsical look.
IN EVERY KITCHEN
You’re likely going to choose staying in rather than going out in the winter months – so cooking at home is a given. And what’s more enticing to cook at home than having a picture-perfect pantry?
Ensuring you have the right pantry essentials on hand not only streamlines meal preparation but also adds a touch of charm to your storage space. Here are some must-have products to keep your pantry organised and inviting throughout the chilly season.
STACKABLE STORAGE CONTAINERS
Maximise your pantry space and keep ingredients fresh with stackable storage containers.
LABELLING ACCESSORIES
Stay organised and on top of your pantry inventory with labelling accessories.
WIRE BASKETS AND SHELVING UNITS
Create additional storage space and enhance accessibility with wire baskets and shelving units.
HANGING RACKS AND HOOKS
Make the most of vertical space in your pantry by incorporating hanging racks and hooks. Install sturdy hooks on the inside of pantry doors to hang aprons, kitchen towels, and utensils for easy access.
