WHILE I TRY not to play favourites, our May edition is one I always get excited about. It is the month I get to spend a morning at Eagle Farm Racecourse, indulging in high-end fashion, millinery magic, and the fresh buzz of carnival in preparation for our cover. The Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival is set to make an even bigger mark on our city this year as Kendall Gilding takes the reins on her ambassadorship. The South Brisbane foodie scene is really not helping with our winter waistlines (Page 49). From underground jazz clubs to poké bowl fun and Fish Lane festivities, it is time to eat your heart out and explore and support this growing scene. This Mother’s Day, honour the other nurturing influences in your life (Page 14) and take time to reflect on the tough love you wish you’d paid attention to as your younger sassy self. We also explore the girls kicking goals on and off the field, and how feminists are making their mark in every industry (Page 27). Fashion never lets us down in winter, with new tones, wardrobe overhauls and textiles to die for. We show you how to boutique shop on a thrift shop budget (Page 38). And we speak to mastermind Tilly Sinclair and the globetrotter herself, Lucy Folk.
Happy reading!

LUCY FOLK:
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW The leading Australian jewellery designer chats to Annabelle Beirne about inspiration, challenging herself, and breakfast in Paris. What inspired you to start your label? My love of precious materials and food were the catalyst for my brand. I couldn’t think of anything better than being able to wear what I create. Did you always want to work in fashion? I never really thought I would work in fashion. I am a trained gold and silversmith; the idea is that you have exhibitions and sell in a contemporary jewellery arena. I did this for some time until I realised I didn’t quite fit the mould. What made you want to expand the business beyond jewellery? One needs to challenge themselves creatively. I wanted to learn about other materials and products, and have a go at putting my own spin on them. What was the most inspiring thing about your recent trip to Tokyo? The attention to detail in all creative areas in Tokyo is perfection, from the wrapping of chocolate at Higashiya to the presentation of ceramic saké cups at restaurants. Where would we find you eating breakfast on a lazy morning in Paris? Wild & The Moon. It’s the healthiest cafe in the Marais. I am there every day when I am in Paris. Other than the bold and inviting pops of colour, what else warms your heart about Morocco? The architecture, the people and the food. I adore it. There is so much vibrancy in Morocco.
Designer Lucy Folk
What beauty product would you consider to be the most essential when travelling? I travel with a lot of toiletries: cleanser, toner, moisturiser, deep sleep spray, melatonin, vitamin C, magnesium, dry shampoo, face sunscreen, makeup... there are too many to name! What do you love most about Melbourne – will the city always be home? I love the city, the energy, the food, and my family. I will always be from Melbourne but I don’t call it home anymore. Where will your next international business trip take you? Marrakech. Then Venice and Paris. What’s next in store for Lucy Folk in 2017? There is so much in store that it’s hard to list: exciting brand collaborations, another store (fingers crossed) and a whole lot of new product! OTHERS
ON MOTHER’S DAY Honour your surrogate family, thank the villagers and remember the angels, writes Emma Carr.
HOW IS ONE supposed to celebrate Christmas without family, or New Year’s Eve without our closest friends? How can we possibly enjoy Mother’s Day without Mum? Mother’s Day is a celebration reserved for admiration and love; a day that encourages you to show gratitude for the woman who bravely brought you into this world. It’s never easy, but loss is inevitably experienced by all. For those who have lost a loved one, certain holidays can serve as excruciating reminders of the person we so dearly miss. I lost my mother in 1998, and as Mother’s Day approaches I’m reminded of her absence more and more. It took years to convince myself to view Mother’s Day the same way others do, when my mother (like many others’) is not here to be celebrated. But as time has passed and painful memories have become hazier, conversations about Mother’s Day no longer make my cheeks flush red or leave me staring at the floor. I may not be able to give a physical gift to my mother, but I have become aware that I possess what she gave me, and that I can give that back to the world. Along with the gift of life, my mother gave me boundless affection, elegance, resilience, pride, and, most importantly, an exceptional father. So this Mother’s Day I will be celebrating the person who cleaned my skinned knees, held my hand while crossing the street, and taught me how to strive for greatness: my dad. Single parenting is one of the most tremendous acts of sheer will and love. The world rested on my father’s shoulders and not only did he survive the experience, he knocked it out of the park.
14
My dad understood the things I said, the things I didn’t say, and the things I never plan on telling him. He answered my questions and fostered my inquisitive nature. He never told me how to live; instead, he lived and let me watch him do it. He taught me countless irreplaceable life lessons that I now live by. He is the example by which I measure the greatness of a person. His patience, quiet notion of complete understanding and unwavering love has shaped me into the woman I am today. The greatest thing a father can do for his daughter is to love their mother. My father did, he still does, and he always will. The sun still envies the way her smile could light up a room. For those of you who will be celebrating your mum this year, I ask one thing: that as you trawl through the shop displays in an attempt to find the “perfect gift”, you remember that you are the best gift your mother could ever ask for. Spend those few extra moments on the phone with her, take the washing inside the first time she asks you to, and listen to her favourite songs because you know it makes her happy. To anyone who has lost a mother, family member or loved one, know this: they are not entirely lost. And a mother’s absence does not make you “motherless”. Take the time to reflect on the comforting memories you are so lucky to have, and picture the summer days of your childhood. Whether the nurturing force in your life is your dad, your aunt or your closest friend, make the effort to celebrate them. This Mother’s Day, honour your surrogate family, thank the villagers, celebrate expectant mothers, and remember the angels. READ MORE ONLINE

NURTURED IN NATURE Mother-daughter duo Mieke and Charlie De Deyne of Mas & Miek chat to Caitlyn Spanner about the beauty of family businesses, and an obsession with ceramics. Charlie & Mieke
16
MIEKE AND CHARLIE De Deyne are just like many mother-daughter pairs: they’re close, and have the same taste in almost everything. What sets the pair apart is their unrelenting creativity, which is brought to life with their ceramic business, Mas & Miek. You may have already seen the amazing wares by Mieke and Charlie splashed across various social media platforms; they’ve made quite a name for themselves in Brisbane with their striking creations inspired by natural forms. With painterly effects and unique shapes, the designs are just asking to be picked up, touched and admired. You can tell a lot of passion and experimentation goes into the vessels that Charlie and Mieke create, and they both speak of ceramics as if it were another member of the family. “We continuously chase the fleeting moments of elemental chance; the slight change in temperature or atmosphere in the kiln that splashes unexpected effects across a glaze and can create amazing colours,” says Mieke. Originally a painter, Mieke turned to ceramics 15 years ago and never looked back. “Ceramics is an endless craft so you can spend your whole life working in the medium and always have another avenue to discover and another skill to learn. However, that being said, I have often combined painting and ceramics.” Charlie inherited her mother’s creative flair and obsession with ceramics. “I used to come and intrude her studio as a kid and play on the wheel or make little monsters, so clay was always second nature,” Charlie says.
But it wasn’t until a few years ago that Charlie decided to adopt ceramics as a more integral part of her life. “We have been collaborating under the name Mas & Miek for around five years now,” she says, “selling our work at GoMA Design Markets and various pop-up shops we held.” While working with family is bound to come with the occasional disagreement, Charlie says she and her mother don’t clash creatively and work well together thanks to their very similar personalities. Mieke agrees, and strongly endorses family businesses, provided everyone gets along. “Nearly 70 per cent of Australian business have their foundations in family-run organisations,” says Mieke. “You trust and know each other better than anybody, and who better to share the fruits of your labour with?” Brisbane locals are set to see a Mas & Miek store in Newstead in the near future. The space will feature a large studio for hosting classes and workshops alongside an onsite café and shop. “Students can either learn to throw on the pottery wheel, or hand-build on the work tables in an individualised program that evolves with their progress,” says Charlie. “We’re really excited for our opening this month, and to share this workspace with others.”

THE PLACE TO BE Glenn Bool of McGrath Estate Agents talks the very best of Bulimba. What do you think attracts buyers to Bulimba and the surrounding suburbs? The vibrant riverside suburbs of Bulimba, Balmoral and Hawthorne are extremely sought-after for young couples, families and professionals. The area offers a unique combination of suburban living and urban flair, with the heart of the community being Oxford Street; a constant hub of activity.

The choice of great schools including Lourdes Hill College, Bulimba State School, Anglican Church Grammar School and Balmoral State High School appeals to families when making the decision to move to the area. What other exciting facilities does the Bulimba area offer prospective buyers? A wrought-iron arch presents a formal entrance to popular Memorial Park. With weeping figs lining the footpath, this local asset is ideal for family outings, picnics and sporting events. Balmoral Cineplex – originally an open-air cinema from the early 1900s – is just a great place to enjoy time out in trendy Bulimba. What are some of the area’s go-to foodie and lifestyle spots? Savour a craft beer at Barcadia and enjoy Wings Wednesday, where you can grab wings for just 50 cents each! Barcadia owner and good mate Ben Pullen has thought of everything – what better way to get through hump day? in the stunning view. You will forget you are even exercising! Come Friday, kick off your weekend and unwind while enjoying live music at Oxford 152. Bulimba recorded extremely strong sales in 2016. What do you put this success down to? Families and couples have bought and renovated in the area, which has had a positive impact on housing prices. There is renewed interstate interest and the market is continuing to gain momentum. Due to its riverside location, the Bulimba area has consistently outgrown many other Brisbane suburbs. With the buyer activity we are seeing, I feel that our market will grow steadily throughout the year. GLENN BOOL P 0400 120 999 GLENNBOOL@MCGRATH.COM.AU

GENERATION ANXIOUS Why Australian millennials are worried about the future. By Emma Carr A RECENT GLOBAL survey has found Australian millennials (those born after 1982 who are currently older than 18) to be among the most stressed and unhappy in the world. How promising. The 2017 Deloitte Millennial Survey is based on the views of 8000 millennials across 30 countries. The 300 Australian participants exhibited a general lack of optimism regarding social and economic progress. The survey found that, as a specific issue, the prospect of unemployment continues to worry many millennials. Also known as Generation Y, millennials are part of the first generation to be raised with internet. With so much knowledge at their fingertips, they
should have it easy, right? In reality, Australia’s most educated generation is facing the worst job prospects in decades. From an early age, millennials have been taught that interdependence is weak and individualism is to be celebrated. This generation has been told to stay in school, go to university, and work hard to secure a satisfying and fulfilling life. But many 20-somethings are experiencing a rude awakening because there simply aren’t
enough jobs to go around. The Deloitte Millennial Survey also found that only eight per cent of Australians in this age group believe they will be better off than their parents, and only four per cent believe they will be happier. While the majority of their parents enjoyed unprecedented peace and prosperity, an increasingly tense world is leaving this generation feeling especially bleak about the future. READ MORE ONLINE

BUILDING COMMUNITIES PDPR Marketing and Creative are setting themselves apart from the rest. WITH A STRONG focus on the property industry, PDPR Marketing and Creative is proud to represent a wide range of corporate clients from architects and developers through to interior designers, hotel brands and builders. While we produce branding suites, websites, sales material and launches, our community consultation and public engagement strategies are what really set us apart. Our stakeholder engagement concepts are unique, with each event, launch, lunch and familiarisation specifically designed and tailored to represent the very essence of the project. For example, a beachside resort may benefit from hosting a sunset soirĂŠe, while an inner-city apartment block could
be better suited to a breakfast meet and greet just prior to the launch of its off-the-plan sales. We identify upcoming community events and sporting groups to sponsor and support, devise strategies to engage with the locals, and deliver openings that are fitting yet inspired. We also hold open days to inform and educate the public while gaining invaluable feedback and insights that can then be used to shape and refine future proposals. Community liaison is a broad area but no matter the focus, we pride ourselves on delivering engagement strategies that are insightful, meaningful and results-driven. IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S LIFE Emma Carr discusses the saga of adult friendship. LIKE EATING FAIRY bread without being judged and doing the splits without pulling a muscle, successfully maintaining friendships is something that becomes increasingly difficult with age. The mysterious social stage that arrives after you graduate from university and land a real-world job is seldom spoken about, because there’s a sad side to it. In the hierarchy of adult relationships, romance often steals the spotlight, leaving friendships on the bench (except in the case of Oprah and Gayle). Given the rapid pace of adult life, finding
new people to complain to and eat with is not as easy as when we were kids. That’s why most of us would rather hold on to what we know. Whether you scaled the social ladder in high school or kept a small group of friends, the dynamic of friendship inevitably changes and you can’t always be the glue that holds together an “unbreakable” lunchtime tribe. After graduation, each year seems to add a new element to the equation: careers, romance, children, and even distance become barriers in the attempt to spend time with one another.
The voluntary nature of friendship also makes it subject to life’s whims. Sure, there will come a time when we can easily go months without seeing friends we once saw daily, but that doesn’t mean we should give up on them altogether. Great friends are few and far between and, for better or for worse, friendships can largely determine our happiness. Those truly amazing friends help us to see through the harder times, and they’re there to celebrate the better times as well. If you’re lucky enough to find the great ones, make the effort to keep them around. READ MORE ONLINE

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA
“Le Tooth gave me my confidence back.” - Tristan
Dr Le of Le Tooth talks veneers, teeth whitening and cosmetic dentistry. LE TOOTH’S EXPERIENCED team is dedicated to creating beautiful, natural-looking smiles. Which new materials have changed cosmetic dentistry the most? Advances in new ceramic materials (replacing traditional porcelain) are stronger and more aesthetically pleasing. Crowns with metal substructure are no longer used. In addition, dental implants have become revolutionary. Traditionally, missing teeth were replaced with dentures and bridges; this method has been superseded by dental implants. What cosmetic dentistry services does Le Tooth offer? At Le Tooth, we offer a variety of cosmetic services including dental implants, aesthetic ceramic crowns, veneers and various tooth whitening systems. What are the benefits of cosmetic dentistry? Cosmetic dentistry has many benefits

including improving the appearance of a person’s teeth and smile. It also increases confidence, improves function, and can be life changing. What types of problems do veneers fix? Veneers correct discolouration, as well as misaligned and malformed teeth, significantly improving overall shape and appearance. Is teeth whitening for everyone or will it not work for some people? Generally, teeth whitening is suitable for most individuals.
A thorough consultation with a dentist will assess your suitability for teeth whitening. Do cosmetic dentistry procedures have any common side effects? When thoroughly assessed and performed properly by a qualified clinician, one can expect predictable and desirable outcomes from cosmetic dentistry. BEAT THE BLUES Survive the season of sadness, writes Emma Carr. WINTER IS SET to wreak havoc on our happiness levels thanks to the combination of low temperatures, a lack of sunshine, and an inability to eat ice-cream without shivering. When the cold weather comes around, most of us just want to curl up and hibernate. Not having the same get-up-and-go attitude as you might have in the warmer months is normal, but it’s important to keep your health in check. STAY ACTIVE If you can’t quite bring yourself to brave the winds (or even leave the house, for that matter), try a workout DVD. This way you can complete your workout in the comfort of your own home. It’s important to stay physically active come June, to keep your mind clear and body in check.
Maximise your results in the current market.
WARM THE SOUL Bring out the slow cooker and embrace your inner Nigella. Warm, hearty meals will delight your tastebuds and provide the perfect excuse to host a mid-July dinner party. Cosy up your home by adding pops of bright décor and freshly-scented candles. Bringing some greenery inside will also help to keep the air clean and fresh.
IN THE SUNSHINE There’s nothing quite like a sunny winter morning. But if it’s simply too cold to head outside, there are other ways to get your daily dose of vitamin D. Good sources of vitamin D include milk, fatty fish, mushroom and eggs. A supplement can also be consumed, however, it is best to consult your doctor about this dietary change first.

GET IT, GIRL
Women's March on Washington 2017
In every industry, feminists are making their mark, writes Sophie Catsoulis. FROM SUPERSTAR BEYONCÉ to presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, young girls are never short of a female role model on the global stage. And on the runway at New York Fashion Week and in the streets of Washington D.C., women strive to inspire others and enact change. Even outside the scope of politics, high fashion and music, we’re blessed with ample inspiration right here in Australia. The sporting arena is brimming with women kicking goals both literally and figuratively, and the recent success of the inaugural AFL Women's season is a prime example. Captain Sharni Williams of the rugby sevens, Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne, netball player Laura Geitz and Matildas captain Lisa De Vanna serve as excellent female role models – and that's just the start of a long list.
The influence of these incredible athletes will continue long after their many sporting successes. Whether athletically-inclined or otherwise, every young girl enjoys the gift of inspiration and the knowledge that anything is possible for her if she puts her mind to it.
5 Buyers’ Hints From an Agent.
2017 has already been a groundbreaking year for women all over the world: every movement is a step towards the abolishment of stereotypes for future generations. Both on and off the field, the future looks bright for little girls with big dreams.
Place Estate Agent Shannon Harvey reveals her top hints for people looking to buy. 1. Wear slip on shoes! Laces are for amateurs when visiting an open home. 2. Organisation is key. You can now sync open house dates and times to your calendar with the new ‘Book Inspection’ button offered at Realestate.com.au. You will be sent date reminders and maps directing you to the home; saving you valuable time and effort on your hunt for the perfect property. 3. Help agents help you. Make an effort to offer positive and constructive feedback. If you can tell the agent exactly what it is you love and don’t love about a home, you will be able to find ’the one’ quicker.

4. Make friends. Build a relationship with an agent in the area you want to buy in by always responding to their suggestions and calls. Be seen as a serious buyer and you will likely gain insight into what homes are coming up for sale - before they even hit the market. 5. Be prepared. Sometimes a better rate from a different bank will help you buy your dream home.

THE OPINION GAMES Sarah Taviani and Eliza Crisp weigh in on the merits of taking a gap year.
CON: [SARAH] I NEVER TOOK a gap year. I went straight from high school to university, and straight from my undergrad to a Master’s degree. I ditched my retail job and began working in my chosen field, fully-qualified, at the age of 21. I’ve known so many people who begin university after a gap year, only to discover that the course they’ve been anticipating isn’t what they expected. It’s a disappointing realisation, and some take that hurdle as the cue for another break. Almost everyone I know who has taken a gap year says it’s the only way to truly learn self-reliance and problem-solving skills.
STEP OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE. WORK HARD. LEARN MORE. DO BETTER. THEN PLAY WHILE YOU’RE BEING PAID FOR ANNUAL LEAVE. But there are no regular parent-teacher conferences about your overdue assignments at university, and your parents can’t ring up and complain that not everyone is pulling their weight during the group project. Well, they can. But no one will listen to them. You have to take responsibility for all that stuff, and that’s how you learn. Step outside your comfort zone. Work hard. Learn more. Do better. And then you get to play while you’re being paid for annual leave. 28
PRO: [ELIZA] I FINISHED YEAR 12 with high marks, and easily scored my first-preference university course. The following years should have been pretty straightforward for teenage me, but were instead marred by a period of utter agitation. After changing my degree three times in three years, I had to admit that I was clearly unfocused, so I deferred my studies and moved to London. It took seven years (and moves to both Melbourne and Vancouver) before I had the desire to return to tertiary education. Now I’m 29 years old. It has taken a little longer than expected, but I’m just a few subjects shy of finally finishing the degree I started 11 years ago: a Bachelor of Journalism. Although I’ve had some incredible adventures, I can’t help but wonder how different my life could have been. If I had just taken a gap year immediately after high school, perhaps I could have avoided some heartache and indecision. I may have even been able to start my university career with the comfort of clarity that I now enjoy.
IT TOOK SEVEN YEARS (AND MOVES TO BOTH MELBOURNE AND VANCOUVER) BEFORE I HAD THE DESIRE TO RETURN. MAY17

Lannah Dunn 18ct French pearl, diamond and enamel pendant circa 1860 $10,500
The pieces stand the test of time and their beauty cannot be surpassed. Historically, the standard of workmanship is high; the pieces stand the test of time and their beauty cannot be surpassed. Imagine antique diamonds, completely cut by hand to maximise their sparkle in candlelight; turquoise pieces set in sentimental jewellery; multi-tone gold forget-me-not pieces – the ultimate token of love from one to another. Moving into the 20th Century, platinum and diamond pieces were favoured in the 1920s and ’30s. These metals of choice were the ultimate creation for the woman of style and sophistication as fashion changed to a streamlined and less ornate style of classic elegance. This luxurious style is still sought-after to this day.
Lannah Dunn complements the romanticism of historic jewels with a contemporary and classic collection designed to sit well together for ladies who like to create their own fabulous collection. The latest and much-anticipated design in the Lannah Dunn collection is the 10-year anniversary marquise and round, diamond continuum bands. THE SWING OF THINGS In a sea of DJs, musicians are now finding foothold. By Sophie Catsoulis. AS A SINGER, I could never get my head around why people paid to see a DJ. Their skill set is incredible but (unlike most others my age) I would much prefer to see a band. And not just any band: a jazz ensemble. Ignoring the pleas of my club-crazy friends and feeling as though I’d been born in the wrong era, I would set out in search of a swing trio or big band, only to realise I was the youngest person in the room by at least 30 years. Now, years later, we’re finally seeing a live music resurgence – and yes, that means jazz. Jazz clubs and music festivals have been thrust back into the spotlight, and while the bands may not always be playing the standards, classic music is once again taking the main stage.
Ignoring the pleas of my club-crazy friends and feeling as though I’d been born in the wrong era, I would set out in search of a swing trio or big band. Maybe you enjoy the smooth sounds of a saxophone as you sip through a sophisticated Sunday sesh at a concert in the hinterland, singing along to artists your parents used to play.
Or maybe you’re a fanatic like me, and you take pride in pulling apart the complex harmonies at a gig. Whatever you like, jazz is back in a big way, and we can only hope it’s here to stay.

INTERVIEW: TILLY SINCLAIR Annabelle Beirne sits down with Brisbane-based jewellery designer Tilly Sinclair. What inspired you to create your jewellery label? My senior art teacher John Honeywill, who is an accomplished artist, mentored and inspired me to design and create. Since then, I have pursued my passion and (through hard work) I have turned it into a small business. Why did you choose to collaborate with Tony Bianco? Finding bricks and mortar stockists is not easy in this industry so I jumped at the chance to collaborate with an iconic Australian brand. They have been an amazing company to work alongside. What sets the Tilly Jewellery collection apart from the Tilly Jewellery X Tony Bianco collaboration? I have put more statement designs in the Tilly Jewellery collections and more subtle everyday pieces in the Tony Bianco collaboration. Who are your favourite jewellery designers? Lucy Folk, Bulgari and Sophie Buhai. What makes your jewellery designs distinct? I play with asymmetry and always include a statement piece, which is generally the best seller. A minimalist, contemporary aesthetic is what my brand is about. Has travel influenced your design techniques? If so, which places in particular? In my travels, I tend to seek out other jewellers and we often discuss trends and technique. However, I think it is more inspiration that I draw from my travels. Circles, squares and cylinders are featured in my Resort 16/17 collection, The Primary Collection, which was really inspired by my last trip to New York. I was influenced by the industrial yet elegant cityscape, the effortless no-care approach to fashion and the reinvention of old purpose to new. You have a great sense of style! What’s your typical attire on a crisp winter’s day in Brisbane? Flared high-waisted jeans, an Acne turtleneck knit, and my shearling coat with my Tony Bianco X Volley sneakers. 40

FLATTERY OR THEFT? Is imitation in the fashion industry just part of the game? By Emma Carr.
PHOTOGRAPHY: @LAURENBRITLOVES VIA THEANNAEDIT.COM
IN THE WORLD of fashion, the act of copying is news to no one. There is an entire spectrum of replicas that ranges from cheap knock-off pieces to accurate reproductions of high-end garments. While much of the growth and creativity in the industry depends on inspiration, when does inspiration become imitation? We can’t condemn chain stores for giving everyday shoppers access to the kind of style that once only the wealthy could afford. After all, that’s the point of fast fashion – to offer high-end trends at an affordable price. But today’s fashion industry is constructed in a way that makes it very easy for mass brands to replicate designer items with impeccable accuracy.
Images from runway shows are plastered on social media within minutes of their unveiling and, thanks to the efforts of teams of high-street designers, mass-market versions appear on shelves within weeks. In many cases, specialist pattern-makers will be on standby, ready to create runway replicas within hours. Most designers, especially up-and-coming names, are not protected by copyright. Without this legal protection, anyone is free to jump onboard with a style and rework it. For this reason, it’s no longer enough to be a talented designer: you must also be a smart business person, and you must investigate the legal tools that are available to protect your expression of art.

LESSONS OUR MUMS TAUGHT US Even in the closest relationships, some lessons have to be learnt the hard way, writes Sarah Taviani. PHYSICAL INDEPENDENCE IS NOT THE SAME AS FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE You might feel like a freaking god because you’re not living under your parents’ roof, but how godly is it to ask your parents for a cash loan because you can’t cover your bills? Sometimes you have to make hard sacrifices to live the life you want. YOU HAVE TO KISS A FEW FROGS BEFORE YOU FIND YOUR PRINCE OR PRINCESS Even the seemingly amazing partners may become mere anecdotes in the future, and eventually you might regret spending so much time and effort on them. That makes it so much more satisfying when you find the right person.
LISTEN TO YOUR MUM: MAKING YOUR OWN MISTAKES IS THE BEST WAY TO GROW. EVEN IF THE SITUATION SUCKS.
DON’T LET A BOY USE YOU LIKE A BUCKET Harsh, Mum. And kind of graphic. But it’s true: your pleasure and emotions matter just as much as someone else’s. STOP PAYING FOR THEM AND SEE IF THEY STILL WANT TO HANG OUT It’s an awkward situation, but if your friend keeps conveniently forgetting their wallet and expecting you to pay, maybe it’s time to pay the tough love forward. Try forgetting your own wallet or only carrying enough to pay for yourself. NOBODY OWES YOU ANYTHING You don’t get to avoid working your way up through the industry just because you think (or know) you’re smarter than other people. Deal with it. Everyone has to start somewhere, so work harder than you ever thought you would or should, prove yourself, and keep moving on. READ MORE ONLINE

2017 WEDDING TRENDS
YOUR CHILD AND TECHNOLOGY
NEW ON THE SCENE
A COUPLE’S WEDDING day presents the perfect opportunity to combine their styles and create a unique and truly memorable experience that represents their personalities and their love. By incorporating aspects of the latest bridal trends and some of your favourite colours, your true sense of style can shine through. 2017 weddings have seen a resurgence of colour. Neutrals and pastels have paved the way for a total return of brights. Expect to continue to see pops of bold shades and bright pairings this wedding season. Green is consistently on-trend. Pantone named Greenery the colour of the year – it’s vibrant and earthy, making it perfect for all seasons. Brides continue to embrace copper, rose gold, and pewter. These tones are so versatile and complement other colours beautifully, but be careful and use metallics strategically. Metallic tones on every table can be too overwhelming. It is always key to bring a little bit of your style into your overall look. After all, it is your special day!
TODAY, MANY FAMILIES are concerned about the use of technology with young children. Many fear that their children will miss out if they don’t have sufficient technological skills, while others worry about how much is too much. As with most things, moderation is the key, as is consideration of why and how children access technology in their everyday lives. Learning is a holistic process; as such, technology should be woven into everyday experiences in meaningful ways. Children should still have significant periods of time to engage in a range of different types of active, creative and social play, during which children establish and grow social relationships with others. Technology has become an embedded and integrated aspect of high-quality early learning programs. Skilled educators use technology to deepen children’s engagement in topics of interest through methods such as supervised internet searches for projects.

EASY ON THE EYE
SOME LIKE IT HOT
RENOVATE OR BUILD?
WITH THE HIGHEST incidence of skin cancer in the world, Australians know a thing or two about sun safety and the damage that harmful UV light can do to our skin. What many of us don’t realise is that excessive UV light can cause the same irreversible damage to our eyes, putting our eye health and eyesight at risk. The tissue that makes up the human eye is some of the most sensitive tissue in the body. UV light (especially UVB rays) plays a role in the development of pterygium, cataracts and even macular degeneration. A pair of 100 per cent UV-blocking sunglasses are as essential as your 50+ sunscreen when outdoors during the day, particularly in Queensland. Prescription polarised lenses offer the perfect solution of crisp vision and ultimate glare, as well as UV protection. Most importantly, UV protection for eyes is especially necessary in young people, so be sure to instil a healthy sunglasses habit in the little ones as early as possible.
WORKING WITH A handcrafted product like specialty coffee is a rewarding experience. Baristas who take their career seriously strive to be masters of their craft: a made-to-order product comes with a conscious stream of procedures to efficiently work through. Blend/single-origin beans, correct grind, weighing, tamping, shot time, milk temperature, latte art – each cup has been precisely made to the customer’s specifications. However, tailor-made specialty coffee does come at the cost of efficiency. You may order a simple skinny cappuccino, but the three customers before you may have ordered very complex coffees, which will ultimately cause the service to slow. Again, this is the joy of working with a handcrafted product – if you like it hot, ask for it hot; if you like it weak, ask for it half-strength. At Wolff Coffee, we pride ourselves on being masters of our craft and providing exceptional coffee experiences where desire meets expectation with every cup.
ONE QUESTION THAT those in the interior design field are most often asked is whether to renovate or build. This is never an easy question to answer, as there are many factors to consider before making a decision. Renovation and building are two of the most stressful things a home owner can do in their life. However, there is one important rule that will make the process much smoother and easier. That rule is to plan. If no real plan of outcome is established, a number of things can happen: money can run out; jobs can be incomplete; or a mismatched, disjointed space can be created. To avoid the detrimental effects of failing to plan, it is worth engaging an interior designer. A designer will assist with the overall design process, engage a building designer to generate plans, obtain quotes, help to plan your budget, and advise on any potential challenges or pitfalls. Also, if they have the right qualifications, a designer can ensure you don’t over-capitalise for your neighbourhood.

WINTER RACING
POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
PRINT VS DIGITAL
JAMES BOAG’S PREMIUM Doomben 10,000 Day, May 13: Dress to impress for the first major race day of the Winter Racing Carnival. Work with fabrics that have a high lustre. Grey or blue suits are also a great option. Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup Day, May 20: Push boundaries and opt for patterned shirts with textured ties. Different jacket and trouser combinations are also encouraged. Darley Kingsford Smith Cup Day, May 27: Be bold and creative, and show some personality. Combine rich winter tones with colourful accessories. Treasury Brisbane Ladies’ Oaks Day, June 3: With the white rose as the signature flower, your outfit is open to many combinations. Think sophisticated style with a three-piece suit, and mix up the waistcoat with a different colour, pattern or texture. UBET Stradbroke Day, June 10: The biggest day of the carnival. The signature flower is the red rose; opt for darker reds as they are much more sophisticated.
I DO NOT smile 24/7, and I don’t believe others need to either. Rather than trying to completely eliminate the negative aspects of life, positive psychology deliberately builds a flourishing life through the framework of P.E.R.M.A.H. Positive Emotion: Generate productive emotions such as gratitude, satisfaction, pleasure, hope and curiosity, and enjoy each moment. Engagement: When you’re engaged with work or hobbies, time seems to stop; you lose a sense of self when you concentrate. Relationships: We’re social animals; quality connections have a significant impact on our contentment and wellbeing. Meaning: Purpose comes from serving a cause bigger than yourself, whether that’s helping family, friends, or the community. Accomplishment: Strive to better yourself by using your strengths, and mastering goals. Health: Managing sleep, nutrition, movement, and alcohol consumption is critical. Go ahead – develop the flourishing life you want to live!
PRINT IS DEAD. I couldn’t tell you how often I’ve heard that catchcry being thrown around. But is it really? With the ability to achieve immediate results, digital advertising is powerful. But print will always have some characteristics that digital mediums cannot match; print demands reader focus and has a tangibility that digital does not. Today, traditional print publications are producing online versions that offer yet another avenue through which advertisers can connect with their audience. Print and digital, working together in harmony, can promote your brand for maximum exposure. Advertising campaigns that work to combine printed collateral and internet advertising can achieve a much higher response rate than an internet-only campaign. Print is not dead and the internet is not killing it. Print publications are in fact just as popular today as they were before the digital revolution. What the interest is instead doing is making us expand our creativity.

LET’S GET PHAT
ROLL UP
The masterminds behind Olé Restaurant Group have combined their skills to create sushi burritos. Why, you ask? Well, why not? Pair that with cultured Hawaiian goodness and you get Suki: a place where the food looks and tastes as incredible as it sounds. The quick, fresh and fascinating foodie hotspot has nailed the launch into our city. The interiors boast a curated colour palette and eye-capturing branding fit to gather the crowds. The only question you have to answer is bowl or burrito? I went with bowl and I am officially addicted. The freshness of the seafood, spices, rice and fruit counterparts were bursting with flavour. A healthy and tasty option is just what we have been craving.
The latest addition to the Fish Lane precinct is Chu the Phat, straight from the geniuses behind Madame Wu. Think adventurous Asian, an unexpected twist on the humble Chiko Roll, and Nutella espresso martinis. The striking and energetic urban atmosphere is one to get excited about! With casual bar spaces and intimate dining areas, it is an alleyway overhauling Asian food as we know it in Brisbane. Crispy pork dumplings are a must, alongside group banquets to treat. Asian street food is either a hit or a miss and Chu the Phat has risked it all and put on the show worth seeing! Paired with a great wine list, this is a must-do for lunch or dinner, opening early May.
This one is for both the health-conscious and the lovers of lavish treats! NYC Bagel Deli landed in West End this month, and to our delight the bagels are freshly baked. From a cream cheese smear to the most decadent Sweet Tooth Bagel with espresso butter, poached pear and berry compote, you cannot go wrong or feel bad for devouring both. Outstanding bagels start and end with proper technique, and it is this aspect that makes for a perfect bagel shop. Being a highlighted first for our city, I would highly recommend a lunch run right about now! Trust in the new and different flavours that the dream team has created. Push the bagel boundaries and delight your tastebuds.

TATTS ALL, FOLKS Brooklyn Beauty Bar explains the benefits and techniques of eyebrow tattooing. Brooke Jesberg
I LOVE A good brow. I’m mad for them. At Brooklyn Beauty Bar, we offer every kind of eyebrow treatment known to womankind: shaping, threading, waxing and extensions. We also offer eyebrow tattooing. Eyebrow hair loss can result from years of over-tweezing, medical conditions, medication or simply genetics. Tattoo treatments for eyebrows help women whose eyebrows are lightly-coloured, thin in places, sparse overall or nonexistent. Eyebrow tattoos eliminate the daily use of pencils or powders to reshape or recolour brows, and improve the attractiveness and definition of a person’s face. Eyebrow shape, thickness, colour, density, height, balance and symmetry can be corrected once and for all with eyebrow tattooing. There are three common eyebrow tattoo
techniques. The first technique is called feather touch; a hair-stroke technique where ink is applied with a sterile handheld tool to create the illusion of naturally-shaped brow hairs. The block technique is a deeper, more defined way of colouring. Here, the desired brow area is completely filled in to create a defined backdrop. The third brow tattooing technique, shading, is an ombré technique that is perfect for people who want a subtle shade behind their brow hairs.
Eyebrow tattooing can even work wonders when creating a complete brow where little to no hair exists. And tatts a fact! Love, Brookie BROOKLYN BEAUTY BAR 5/15 JAMES ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY THE BARRACKS | 61 PETRIE TCE, BRISBANE P 0421 202 447 BROOKLYNBEAUTYBAR.COM.AU

How do you prepare your skin for a long flight? Stay moisturised! I usually don’t wear makeup on the plane. Instead, I bring my best moisturiser and a super hydrating lip balm to keep those smackers in top shape! What’s in your travel beauty bag? My travel beauty bag isn’t as glamorous as you may think. It usually consists of a travel-size Miss Dior perfume, my beloved brow pencil and brush from Benefit Cosmetics, a BeautyBlender, Stila Stay All Day concealer, deodorant, pawpaw ointment and a MAC lipstick or two (because they stay on so long). Do you mix up your fragrance each season? I’ve tested so many perfumes, sprays and body mists over the years and nothing
quite compares to my beloved Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet perfume. It’s the perfect scent to complement any outfit. What is your skincare secret? I make sure to keep my skin clean and hydrated. I use an exfoliant at night and a gentle cleanser in the morning to refresh and brighten my skin. And how could I ever forget my new love? Sunday Riley C.E.O Protect + Repair moisturiser – it’s honestly a must. How do you avoid hair disaster by the end of the third day? OK, ladies, listen up because what I’m about to tell you will blow your minds. Cordless hair straightener! I recently found one from LoLa. I’ll throw that, Batiste dry shampoo and a paddle brush in my bag and I’m good to go!

TAKE A NEW TURN The Leg Vein Doctor’s Dr Nicholas Kemp explains recent advances in the treatment of varicose veins. VARICOSE VEINS ARE abnormally swollen veins that are visible just beneath the skin. Without treatment, they can become problematic and painful. In the past, varicose veins have most commonly been treated with the surgical procedure of vein stripping; however, recent advances now offer people less invasive options. Last month, Dr Nicholas Kemp, Medical Director of The Leg Vein Doctor, had an informative article discussing these advances in the field published in the Australian Family Physician journal. Can you briefly summarise your recent paper? The take-home message of the paper is that surgical stripping of varicose veins is now being displaced by minimally invasive procedures that are performed in an office environment. This worldwide
Dr Nicholas Kemp
advancement is now supported by current international guidelines. What are the most recent advances for the treatment of varicose veins? The modern treatment options for varicose veins include endothermal treatment with laser and radiofrequency devices, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy and, most recently, the use of cyanoacrylate glue. What are some benefits of these advances? The major benefits are that people do not require hospitalisation, and short-term quality of life is
significantly improved [due to fewer] complications and the ability to return to work earlier. Importantly, these procedures can be used to treat patients who have recurrent varicose veins following previous unsuccessful surgical stripping. Which method to use is best determined by the doctor combining clinical assessment with the use of venous colour duplex ultrasound. Every patient is different. COME TO A HEAD The causes, symptoms and treatment of chronic migraine with the Migraine Specialist. What is chronic migraine? Chronic migraine is a debilitating condition where a person suffers from a headache for at least 15 days out of a month. These headaches last for more than three months, and will have the features of a migraine on at least eight days out of the month. Migraines are associated with light and noise sensitivity, as well as nausea. The discomfort can be severe and can lead to a reliance on pain medications to function. Are some people more susceptible than others to chronic migraine? Migraines are extremely common. Chronic migraine affects approximately three per cent of the population, with statistics showing that women are proven to be the most susceptible. trauma, the frequent use of pain medication, excessive caffeine consumption, poor sleep, stress, depression, thyroid disorders and obesity. Can chronic migraine be successfully treated? Chronic migraine is a treatable condition. The aim of effective treatment is to achieve remission back to the episodic form of the condition. For many patients with chronic migraine, this is the state they recall, at times several years prior, when relatively infrequent and treatable events were occurring. What types of services are offered at Migraine
Specialist? At Migraine Specialist, we specialise in the management of chronic migraine. Each of our patients has had a unique migraine treatment journey, and we approach each individual case with this in mind. Together with the patient, we work actively to find ways to control the impact of chronic migraine on their lives. Nicole Prance
PUT IT IN INK Nicole Prance of Pro Cosmetic Tattoo explains the medical side of tattooing. NICOLE PRANCE BEGAN her successful career in cosmetic tattooing 15 years ago. After studying Fine Arts, the talented tattoo artist qualified as a media makeup artist and went on to work in film and television in the UK. Nicole now runs Pro Cosmetic Tattoo in the Mater Private Clinic, and offers medical and cosmetic tattooing services to her Brisbane clients. Medical tattooing is used to improve the appearance of damaged skin. Nicole can camouflage many different types of scars by using flesh-coloured inks to help disguise imperfections. This clever technique is achieved by gradually building colour over the area until it blends into the surrounding skin. Nicole has worked on burns, birthmarks, hypopigmentation and scars. Nicole also specialises in 3D areola and nipple tattooing; a service for breast cancer survivors who
have chosen to have reconstructive surgery. Nicole customises colours, shapes and sizes for each individual in order to create a 3D areola and nipple that looks incredibly realistic but is flat to touch. This small tattoo helps to make a significant difference in the lives of many women. Nicole also offers services such as feather-touch brows, lips and eyeliner. WHY PRO COSMETIC? What makes you one of the best for cosmetic and medical tattooing? I take my job very seriously and want the best outcome for my clients. Skin is a complex thing that takes years to understand. My knowledge and experience puts you in the best hands.
RISE OF THE ROLLER The bombshell bounce is making a comeback, writes Emma Carr. WE USED TO think hair rollers belonged exclusively to the era of perfume atomisers, handheld mirrors and those big movie-star powder puffs. But if the parade of well-coiffed women sauntering down runways or out of your local salon is any indication, the bounce is certainly back. Forget what your grandma taught you about hair rollers – this is the new way to get big, modern, ultra-cool waves. Of course, you can use Velcro rollers and dry your hair manually if you want to enjoy the true vintage feel, but hot rollers can provide the same effect with half the effort. stylemagazines.com.au
VS Sassoon Big Hair Hot Rollers $37.95
• Make a deep side part. This is much more glamorous than a centre part. • Use a heat-protection serum or mist. The ends of your hair must be smooth, otherwise they will crinkle in the heat. • Roll from the ends up. This will ensure a heavy curl at the bottom. • Place the roller vertically. Horizontal gives major volume à la Marilyn Monroe; vertical gives a soft, tousled effect. • Patience is key. It all depends on how well your hair holds a curl, but you should generally leave hot rollers in for a minimum of 10 minutes. • Lock in shape. Pin your hair into a similarly cylindrical shape to let it cool. • Use a dry texturising spray. Regular hairspray will make your waves look a little too perfect. 57

MORE THAN YOU THINK
PRIVATE VERSUS PUBLIC
NEED A LITTLE LIFT?
VARICOSE VEINS OCCUR when the veins become visibly twisted and swollen beneath the skin. As a result of varicose veins, 15 per cent of people develop high blood pressure inside the leg veins. This circulatory problem is also known as chronic venous hypertension. Unlike arterial hypertension, venous hypertension causes tissue damage. This is due to an accumulation of waste metabolites and a build-up of fluid leaking into the subcutaneous tissues under the skin. Inflammation of the subcutaneous tissue leads to damage to the lymphatic system and degeneration of the fat tissue where the skin becomes darkly pigmented, thin and susceptible to injury. Unfortunately, up to two per cent of people will develop skin ulceration as a result. Unbeknownst to many, this condition can occur at an early age. Treatment of varicose veins will abolish venous hypertension and prevent any skin damage from occurring.
THERE IS ALWAYS debate about private obstetric care versus the public system. Ultimately, you should choose the option that best suits you. Some benefits of choosing private maternity care with Eve Health include: Your obstetrician of choice. You can choose from 10 highly-experienced Eve Health obstetricians, who deliver at either the Mater Mothers’ Private or the Wesley. Empowerment of women. Eve obstetricians will offer you a personal delivery plan. Your individual birth preferences will be considered throughout your pregnancy. Delivery by expert obstetrician. Your baby will be delivered by a highly-experienced obstetrician. If your birth does not go to plan, or if there is a complication, then it is your obstetrician who will be there making decisions with you. Eve Health also offers antenatal education classes, midwife consultations, mothers’ group and physio and, of course, a private hospital stay with your newborn baby.
THE BROW LIFT-SHAPING Experience is offered exclusively at The Brow Bar, and is known for consistently delivering exceptional brow results. The magic is in the shaping and alignment technique used by our Arch Angels. Firstly, our Angels ensure that the brow begins in line with the bulb of the nose. The tail point is then measured from the side of the nose, on an angle to the outer corner of the eye. If the brow’s tail exceeds this point, it will drag the eye down, failing to enhance the natural Lift-Lines of the face. At the completion of our Brow Lift-Shaping Experience, an informative Coaching Class is offered for our clients to learn how to make their brows appear fuller and more elongated. During this class, our Arch Angels explain the concept of Lift-Lines and how to enhance these facial angles when shaping your brows. With the help of our talented Arch Angels, you can achieve beautiful, youthful brows today.

MIGRAINES AND WEATHER
PIERCING REPAIRS
SLEEP APNOEA CANCER RISK
A MULTITUDE OF triggers can set off an attack in migraine patients. Examples of triggers include foods such as wine, chocolate and caffeine, stress, changes in sleep patterns, and hormonal fluctuations. A number of migraine patients will also report that weather change can be causative. Migraine sufferers who are influenced by the weather can be sensitive to temperature and humidity. Many patients will also state that changes in barometric pressure are triggering. Humans can be exposed to low atmospheric pressure during air travel, and some migraine patients (particularly cluster migraine patients) consider this a trigger. Flying is associated with several other potential triggers, including poor air circulation, uncomfortable positions, alcohol, change in time zones, and insufficient sleep. In such susceptible patients, migraine medications taken in preparation for a low pressure weather event may be a worthwhile treatment strategy.
TIMES CHANGE AND, for some people, the piercing that they had done in their youth no longer suits them. Thankfully, cosmetic improvement of a piercing scar is now available. Piercing repairs can be performed anywhere on the body where a pierced hole has become stretched or torn, or is simply no longer wanted and the jewellery has been removed. At Aquarius Health & Medispa, we offer two common methods of piercing scar repair. A surgical re-excision of the scar can be performed, otherwise a chemical acid can be applied to the piercing to help re-heal the hole and stimulate new collagen growth. The latter approach is called the Cross Technique. If surgical re-excision is required, local anaesthetic is injected with a very fine needle before the damaged holes are surgically removed. The remaining hole is then repaired using fine suturing. If you’re having piercing regret, visit us at Aquarius Health & Medispa today.
MILLIONS OF AUSTRALIANS suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and most people are unaware. We don’t usually struggle to breathe when we are awake, but the low muscle tone that occurs when lying down makes people more vulnerable to airway collapse. A closed-off airway is life-threatening, so our automatic protective reflexes jump in to rouse us, disturbing sleep. This reflex often doesn’t occur until the oxygen in the blood has dropped precariously low. Sleep should allow us to remain in a calm, restorative state, but with OSA it becomes disrupted and highly stressful. Most serious consequences of OSA are related to the heart; however, new research points to an increased risk of developing cancer, and there is a decreased survival rate in cancer patients with sleep apnoea. Don’t take the risk. Let the highly-educated and experienced James Street Dentists help you get the care you need for your sleep apnoea.

TRAVEL River Graze Festival
THE FLAVOUR OF MELBOURNE From floating food to a fiery six-course barbecue degustation, Emmy-Lou McKean shares the highlights from the 25th annual Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. WHEN I SIGNED on for a trip to the opening week of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (MFWF), I had no idea it would be the biggest culinary adventure of my life. During its 25th anniversary celebration, the 10-day Melbourne Food and Wine Festival also hosted The World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards. As a die-hard foodie, I was ecstatic at the thought of meeting restaurateurs, lovers of all things food and wine from all over the globe, and the world’s greatest chefs, From the moment we touched down in Melbourne early Friday morning, we were on the move with a jam-packed itinerary that had us wining and dining for every meal until our departure on Sunday evening. 64
After checking into our luxurious room at The Langham, Melbourne, we were on our way to the most anticipated event of MFWF: The World’s Longest Lunch. A record-breaking 1772 diners stretched along 600 metres of the iconic Italian dining strip of Lygon Street in Carlton. The godfather of Italian cooking, Antonio Carluccio, curated the menu for the lunch, which treated diners to culinary delights including a whopping 122.5 metres of pizza, 2000 stuffed heirloom tomatoes and 2552 kilograms of Osso Bucco. Before we knew it, our long lunch had finished and we were on our way to The House of Food & Wine. This home and heart of the festival played host to a number of events over the 10 days,
Mozzarella Balloon by Grant Achatz
receiving a bold and exciting face-lift with each new event. To celebrate the opening night of MFWF, and the first day of our culinary adventure, we attended the Italo Dining & Disco Club. This affair saw MFWF legend Maurice Terzini (Icebergs Dining Room and Bar) partner with Giovanni Paradiso (Fratelli Paradiso) to transform The House of Food & Wine into a kitsch fine-dining Italian street party. From drinking fine wine in a paper cup to eating takeaway tiramisu on the dance floor while listening to the DJ spin vinyl, this party was unlike anything else I’d experienced. And I loved it! 24 HOURS IN SINGAPORE Singapore offers the perfect place to a break up that long-haul flight, writes Eliza Crisp. ALTHOUGH SINGAPORE’S CHANGI Airport is continuously voted one of the best in the world, this dazzling city offers plenty of reasons to venture past the arrivals gate on your stopover.
11AM Time to discover Orchard Road! Home to the famed Singapore Shopping Festival, this bustling strip is a mecca for shopping addicts all year round. For lunch, head to Michelin-starred Din Tai Fung for a generous serving of xiao long bao dumplings.
9AM Beat the tropical heat by hitting the streets early, and make your way to the top of the Marina Bay Sands Casino complex. The expansive rooftop SkyPark features multiple restaurants, landscaped gardens, and an impressive infinity pool. This architectural wonderland cost a cool $8 billion to build, and provides sweeping views across the island.
2PM You deserve a drink, so head to the luxurious Raffles Hotel Singapore for an obligatory Singapore Sling. Established in 1887, the colonial architecture of this iconic hotel is a photographer’s dream.
5PM Treat that grumbling tummy to some traditional hawker food at Lau Sa Pat food markets. The chili crab is considered Singapore’s national dish, but more adventurous foodie types might like to try the spicy stingray. 8PM After dinner, stop by Gardens by the Bay for the nightly light show, starting from 8pm. This choreographed spectacular showcases park highlights such as the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest and the Supertree Grove, and provides the perfect way to wind down after an adventurous day.
