WHILE I TRY not to play favourites, our May edition is one I always get excited about. It is the month I get to spend a morning at Eagle Farm Racecourse, indulging in high-end fashion, millinery magic, and the fresh buzz of carnival in preparation for our cover.

The Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival is set to make an even bigger mark on our city this year as Kendall Gilding takes the reins on her ambassadorship.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW The leading Australian jewellery designer chats to Annabelle Beirne about inspiration, challenging herself, and breakfast in Paris.

What inspired you to start your label? My love of precious materials and food were the catalyst for my brand. I couldn’t think of anything better than being able to wear what I create.

Did you always want to work in fashion?

I never really thought I would work in fashion.

I am a trained gold and silversmith; the idea is that you have exhibitions and sell in a contemporary jewellery arena. I did this for some time until I realised I didn’t quite fit the mould.

What made you want to expand the business beyond jewellery? One needs to challenge themselves creatively. I wanted to learn about other materials and products, and have a go at putting my own spin on them.

What was the most inspiring thing about your recent trip to Tokyo? The attention to detail in all creative areas in Tokyo is perfection, from the wrapping of chocolate at Higashiya to the presentation of ceramic saké cups at restaurants.

Where would we find you eating breakfast on a lazy morning in Paris? Wild & The Moon. It’s the healthiest cafe in the Marais. I am there every day when I am in Paris.

Other than the bold and inviting pops of colour, what else warms your heart about Morocco? The architecture, the people and the food. I adore it. There is so much vibrancy in Morocco.

What beauty product would you consider to be the most essential when travelling? I travel with a lot of toiletries: cleanser, toner, moisturiser, deep sleep spray, melatonin, vitamin C, magnesium, dry shampoo, face sunscreen, makeup... there are too many to name!

What do you love most about Melbourne – will the city always be home? I love the city, the energy, the food, and my family. I will always be from Melbourne but I don’t call it home anymore.

Where will your next international business trip take you? Marrakech. Then Venice and Paris.

What’s next in store for Lucy Folk in 2017?

There is so much in store that it’s hard to list: exciting brand collaborations, another store (fingers crossed) and a whole lot of new product!

ON MOTHER’S DAY Honour your surrogate family, thank the villagers and remember the angels, writes Emma Carr.

HOW IS ONE supposed to celebrate Christmas without family, or New Year’s Eve without our closest friends?

How can we possibly enjoy Mother’s Day without Mum? Mother’s Day is a celebration reserved for admiration and love; a day that encourages you to show gratitude for the woman who bravely brought you into this world.

It’s never easy, but loss is inevitably experienced by all. For those who have lost a loved one, certain holidays can serve as excruciating reminders of the person we so dearly miss.

I lost my mother in 1998, and as Mother’s Day approaches I’m reminded of her absence more and more.

It took years to convince myself to view Mother’s Day the same way others do, when my mother (like many others’) is not here to be celebrated.

But as time has passed and painful memories have become hazier, conversations about Mother’s Day no longer make my cheeks flush red or leave me staring at the floor.

I may not be able to give a physical gift to my mother, but I have become aware that I possess what she gave me, and that I can give that back to the world.

Along with the gift of life, my mother gave me boundless affection, elegance, resilience, pride, and, most importantly, an exceptional father.

So this Mother’s Day I will be celebrating the person who cleaned my skinned knees, held my hand while crossing the street, and taught me how to strive for greatness: my dad.

Single parenting is one of the most tremendous acts of sheer will and love. The world rested on my father’s shoulders and not only did he survive the experience, he knocked it out of the park.

My dad understood the things I said, the things I didn’t say, and the things I never plan on telling him.

He answered my questions and fostered my inquisitive nature. He never told me how to live; instead, he lived and let me watch him do it.

He taught me countless irreplaceable life lessons that I now live by. He is the example by which I measure the greatness of a person.

His patience, quiet notion of complete understanding and unwavering love has shaped me into the woman I am today.

The greatest thing a father can do for his daughter is to love their mother. My father did, he still does, and he always will. The sun still envies the way her smile could light up a room.

For those of you who will be celebrating your mum this year, I ask one thing: that as you trawl through the shop displays in an attempt to find the “perfect gift”, you remember that you are the best gift your mother could ever ask for.

Spend those few extra moments on the phone with her, take the washing inside the first time she asks you to, and listen to her favourite songs because you know it makes her happy.

To anyone who has lost a mother, family member or loved one, know this: they are not entirely lost. And a mother’s absence does not make you “motherless”.

Take the time to reflect on the comforting memories you are so lucky to have, and picture the summer days of your childhood.

Whether the nurturing force in your life is your dad, your aunt or your closest friend, make the effort to celebrate them.

This Mother’s Day, honour your surrogate family, thank the villagers, celebrate expectant mothers, and remember the angels.

NURTURED IN NATURE Mother-daughter duo Mieke and Charlie De Deyne of Mas & Miek chat to Caitlyn Spanner about the beauty of family businesses, and an obsession with ceramics.

MIEKE AND CHARLIE De Deyne are just like many mother-daughter pairs: they’re close, and have the same taste in almost everything.

What sets the pair apart is their unrelenting creativity, which is brought to life with their ceramic business, Mas & Miek.

You may have already seen the amazing wares

by Mieke and Charlie splashed across various social media platforms; they’ve made quite a name for themselves in Brisbane with their striking creations inspired by natural forms.

With painterly effects and unique shapes, the designs are just asking to be picked up, touched and admired.

You can tell a lot of passion and experimentation goes into the vessels that Charlie and Mieke create, and they both speak of ceramics as if it were another member of the family.

“We continuously chase the fleeting moments of elemental chance; the slight change in temperature or atmosphere in the kiln that splashes unexpected effects across a glaze and can create amazing colours,” says Mieke.

Originally a painter, Mieke turned to ceramics 15 years ago and never looked back. “Ceramics is an endless craft so you can spend your whole life working in the medium and always have another avenue to discover and another skill to learn.

However, that being said, I have often combined painting and ceramics.”

Charlie inherited her mother’s creative flair and obsession with ceramics. “I used to come and intrude her studio as a kid and play on the wheel or make little monsters, so clay was always second nature,” Charlie says.

But it wasn’t until a few years ago that Charlie decided to adopt ceramics as a more integral part of her life.

“We have been collaborating under the name Mas & Miek for around five years now,” she says, “selling our work at GoMA Design Markets and various pop-up shops we held.”

While working with family is bound to come with the occasional disagreement, Charlie says she and her mother don’t clash creatively and work well together thanks to their very similar personalities.

Mieke agrees, and strongly endorses family businesses, provided everyone gets along.

“Nearly 70 per cent of Australian business have their foundations in family-run organisations,” says Mieke. “You trust and know each other better than anybody, and who better to share the fruits of your labour with?”

Brisbane locals are set to see a Mas & Miek store in Newstead in the near future. The space will feature a large studio for hosting classes and workshops alongside an onsite café and shop.

“Students can either learn to throw on the pottery wheel, or hand-build on the work tables in an individualised program that evolves with their progress,” says Charlie. “We’re really excited for our opening this month, and to share this workspace with others.”

GENERATION ANXIOUS Why Australian millennials are worried about the future.

By Emma Carr A RECENT GLOBAL survey has found Australian millennials (those born after 1982 who are currently older than 18) to be among the most stressed and unhappy in the world.

How promising.

The 2017 Deloitte Millennial Survey is based on the views of 8000 millennials across 30 countries.

The 300 Australian participants exhibited a general lack of optimism regarding social and economic progress.

The survey found that, as a specific issue, the prospect of unemployment continues to worry many millennials.

Also known as Generation Y, millennials are part of the first generation to be raised with internet.

With so much knowledge at their fingertips, they

should have it easy, right?

In reality, Australia’s most educated generation is facing the worst job prospects in decades.

From an early age, millennials have been taught that interdependence is weak and individualism is to be celebrated.

This generation has been told to stay in school, go to university, and work hard to secure a satisfying and fulfilling life.

But many 20-somethings are experiencing a rude awakening because there simply aren’t

enough jobs to go around.

The Deloitte Millennial Survey also found that only eight per cent of Australians in this age group believe they will be better off than their parents, and only four per cent believe they will be happier.

While the majority of their parents enjoyed unprecedented peace and prosperity, an increasingly tense world is leaving this generation feeling especially bleak about the future.

THE OPINION GAMES Sarah Taviani and Eliza Crisp weigh in on the merits of taking a gap year.

CON: [SARAH] I NEVER TOOK a gap year. I went straight from high school to university, and straight from my undergrad to a Master’s degree.

I ditched my retail job and began working in my chosen field, fully-qualified, at the age of 21.

I’ve known so many people who begin university after a gap year, only to discover that the course they’ve been anticipating isn’t what they expected.

It’s a disappointing realisation, and some take that hurdle as the cue for another break.

Almost everyone I know who has taken a gap year says it’s the only way to truly learn self-reliance and problem-solving skills.

STEP OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE. WORK HARD. LEARN MORE. DO BETTER. THEN PLAY WHILE YOU’RE BEING PAID FOR ANNUAL LEAVE. But there are no regular parent-teacher conferences about your overdue assignments at university, and your parents can’t ring up and complain that not everyone is pulling their weight during the group project. Well, they can. But no one will listen to them. You have to take responsibility for all that stuff, and that’s how you learn.

Step outside your comfort zone. Work hard. Learn more. Do better. And then you get to play while you’re being paid for annual leave.

PRO: [ELIZA] I FINISHED YEAR 12 with high marks, and easily scored my first-preference university course.

The following years should have been pretty straightforward for teenage me, but were instead marred by a period of utter agitation.

After changing my degree three times in three years, I had to admit that I was clearly unfocused, so I deferred my studies and moved to London.

It took seven years (and moves to both Melbourne and Vancouver) before I had the desire to return to tertiary education.

Now I’m 29 years old. It has taken a little longer than expected, but I’m just a few subjects shy of finally finishing the degree I started 11 years ago: a Bachelor of Journalism. Although I’ve had some incredible adventures, I can’t help but wonder how different my life could have been.

If I had just taken a gap year immediately after high school, perhaps I could have avoided some heartache and indecision.

I may have even been able to start my university career with the comfort of clarity that I now enjoy.

THE SWING OF THINGS In a sea of DJs, musicians are now finding foothold.

AS A SINGER, I could never get my head around why people paid to see a DJ. Their skill set is incredible but (unlike most others my age) I would much prefer to see a band.

And not just any band: a jazz ensemble.

Ignoring the pleas of my club-crazy friends and feeling as though I’d been born in the wrong era, I would set out in search of a swing trio or big band, only to realise I was the youngest person in the room by at least 30 years.

Now, years later, we’re finally seeing a live music resurgence – and yes, that means jazz.

Jazz clubs and music festivals have been thrust back into the spotlight, and while the bands may not always be playing the standards, classic music is once again taking the main stage.

The performance showcases the beauty and athleticism of the contemporary genre.

“Natalie’s works speak of real human emotions and connections, and showcase the exciting and wonderful form of contemporary dance,” says dancer Elise May.

The kiss-and-tell performance features live jazz by award-winning Queensland trio Trichotomy, as well as special guests Kristin Berardi and saxophonist Rafael Karlen.

“Performing with live music is an absolute pleasure and luxury as a dancer,” says Elise.

What inspired you to create your jewellery label? My senior art teacher John Honeywill, who is an accomplished artist, mentored and inspired me to design and create. Since then, I have pursued my passion and (through hard work) I have turned it into a small business.

Why did you choose to collaborate with Tony Bianco?

Finding bricks and mortar stockists is not easy in this industry so I jumped at the chance to collaborate with an iconic Australian brand.

They have been an amazing company to work alongside.

What sets the Tilly Jewellery collection apart from the Tilly Jewellery X Tony Bianco collaboration? I have put more statement designs in the Tilly Jewellery collections and more subtle everyday pieces in the Tony Bianco collaboration.

Who are your favourite jewellery designers? Lucy Folk, Bulgari and Sophie Buhai.

What makes your jewellery designs distinct? I play with asymmetry and always include a statement piece, which is generally the best seller.

A minimalist, contemporary aesthetic is what my brand is about.

Has travel influenced your design techniques? If so, which places in particular? In my travels, I tend to seek out other jewellers and we often discuss trends and technique. However, I think it is more inspiration that I draw from my travels. Circles, squares and cylinders are featured in my Resort 16/17 collection, The Primary Collection, which was really inspired by my last trip to New York.

I was influenced by the industrial yet elegant cityscape, the effortless no-care approach to fashion and the reinvention of old purpose to new.

FLATTERY OR THEFT? Is imitation in the fashion industry just part of the game? By Emma Carr.

IN THE WORLD of fashion, the act of copying is news to no one. There is an entire spectrum of replicas that ranges from cheap knock-off pieces to accurate reproductions of high-end garments.

While much of the growth and creativity in the industry depends on inspiration, when does inspiration become imitation?

We can’t condemn chain stores for giving everyday shoppers access to the kind of style that once only the wealthy could afford. After all, that’s the point of fast fashion – to offer high-end trends at an affordable price.

But today’s fashion industry is constructed in a way that makes it very easy for mass brands to replicate designer items with impeccable accuracy.

Images from runway shows are plastered on social media within minutes of their unveiling and, thanks to the efforts of teams of high-street designers, mass-market versions appear on shelves within weeks.

In many cases, specialist pattern-makers will be on standby, ready to create runway replicas within hours.

Most designers, especially up-and-coming names, are not protected by copyright. Without this legal protection, anyone is free to jump onboard with a style and rework it.

For this reason, it’s no longer enough to be a talented designer: you must also be a smart business person, and you must investigate the legal tools that are available to protect your expression of art.

VARICOSE VEINS ARE abnormally swollen veins that are visible just beneath the skin.

Without treatment, they can become problematic and painful. In the past, varicose veins have most commonly been treated with the surgical procedure of vein stripping; however, recent advances now offer people less invasive options.

Can you briefly summarise your recent paper?

The take-home message of the paper is that surgical stripping of varicose veins is now being displaced by minimally invasive procedures that are performed in an office environment. This worldwide

advancement is now supported by current international guidelines.

What are the most recent advances for the treatment of varicose veins? The modern treatment options for varicose veins include endothermal treatment with laser and radiofrequency devices, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy and, most recently, the use of cyanoacrylate glue.

What are some benefits of these advances?

The major benefits are that people do not require hospitalisation, and short-term quality of life is

significantly improved [due to fewer] complications and the ability to return to work earlier.

Importantly, these procedures can be used to treat patients who have recurrent varicose veins following previous unsuccessful surgical stripping.

Which method to use is best determined by the doctor combining clinical assessment with the use of venous colour duplex ultrasound. Every patient is different.

The ends of your hair must be smooth, otherwise they will crinkle in the heat.

• Roll from the ends up. This will ensure a heavy curl at the bottom.

• Place the roller vertically. Horizontal gives major volume à la Marilyn Monroe; vertical gives a soft, tousled effect.

• Patience is key. It all depends on how well your hair holds a curl, but you should generally leave hot rollers in for a minimum of 10 minutes.

• Lock in shape. Pin your hair into a similarly cylindrical shape to let it cool.

• Use a dry texturising spray. Regular hairspray will make your waves look a little too perfect.

VARICOSE VEINS OCCUR when the veins become visibly twisted and swollen beneath the skin.

As a result of varicose veins, 15 per cent of people develop high blood pressure inside the leg veins. This circulatory problem is also known as chronic venous hypertension.

A MULTITUDE OF triggers can set off an attack in migraine patients. Examples of triggers include foods such as wine, chocolate and caffeine, stress, changes in sleep patterns, and hormonal fluctuations.

A number of migraine patients will also report that weather change can be causative.

Migraine sufferers who are influenced by the weather can be sensitive to temperature and humidity. Many patients will also state that changes in barometric pressure are triggering.

Humans can be exposed to low atmospheric pressure during air travel, and some migraine patients (particularly cluster migraine patients) consider this a trigger. Flying is associated with several other potential triggers, including poor air circulation, uncomfortable positions, alcohol, change in time zones, and insufficient sleep.

In such susceptible patients, migraine medications taken in preparation for a low pressure weather event may be a worthwhile treatment strategy.

TIMES CHANGE AND, for some people, the piercing that they had done in their youth no longer suits them.

Thankfully, cosmetic improvement of a piercing scar is now available.

Piercing repairs can be performed anywhere on the body where a pierced hole has become stretched or torn, or is simply no longer wanted and the jewellery has been removed.

At Aquarius Health & Medispa, we offer two common methods of piercing scar repair.

A surgical re-excision of the scar can be performed, otherwise a chemical acid can be applied to the piercing to help re-heal the hole and stimulate new collagen growth. The latter approach is called the Cross Technique.

If surgical re-excision is required, local anaesthetic is injected with a very fine needle before the damaged holes are surgically removed. The remaining hole is then repaired using fine suturing.

THE FLAVOUR OF MELBOURNE From floating food to a fiery six-course barbecue degustation, Emmy-Lou McKean shares the highlights from the 25th annual Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

WHEN I SIGNED on for a trip to the opening week of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (MFWF), I had no idea it would be the biggest culinary adventure of my life.

During its 25th anniversary celebration, the 10-day Melbourne Food and Wine Festival also hosted The World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards.

As a die-hard foodie, I was ecstatic at the thought of meeting restaurateurs, lovers of all things food and wine from all over the globe, and the world’s greatest chefs, From the moment we touched down in Melbourne early Friday morning, we were on the move with a jam-packed itinerary that had us wining and dining for every meal until our departure on Sunday evening.

After checking into our luxurious room at The Langham, Melbourne, we were on our way to the most anticipated event of MFWF: The World’s Longest Lunch. A record-breaking 1772 diners stretched along 600 metres of the iconic Italian dining strip of Lygon Street in Carlton.

The godfather of Italian cooking, Antonio Carluccio, curated the menu for the lunch, which treated diners to culinary delights including a whopping 122.5 metres of pizza, 2000 stuffed heirloom tomatoes and 2552 kilograms of Osso Bucco.

Before we knew it, our long lunch had finished and we were on our way to The House of Food & Wine. This home and heart of the festival played host to a number of events over the 10 days,

receiving a bold and exciting face-lift with each new event.

To celebrate the opening night of MFWF, and the first day of our culinary adventure, we attended the Italo Dining & Disco Club.

This affair saw MFWF legend Maurice Terzini (Icebergs Dining Room and Bar) partner with Giovanni Paradiso (Fratelli Paradiso) to transform The House of Food & Wine into a kitsch fine-dining Italian street party.

From drinking fine wine in a paper cup to eating takeaway tiramisu on the dance floor while listening to the DJ spin vinyl, this party was unlike anything else I’d experienced.

And I loved it!

5PM Treat that grumbling tummy to some traditional hawker food at Lau Sa Pat food markets. The chili crab is considered Singapore’s national dish, but more adventurous foodie types might like to try the spicy stingray.

8PM After dinner, stop by Gardens by the Bay for the nightly light show, starting from 8pm. This choreographed spectacular showcases park highlights such as the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest and the Supertree Grove, and provides the perfect way to wind down after an adventurous day.
