Inspired by her trip to Japan in early 2015, Holly’s new Minamo collection draws on traditional Japanese ceramics and the poetry of nuances and subtleties evident in wabi-sabi philosophy. Wabi-sabi is more a mindset than a style. It is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature. SOUND Food and music have long been recognised as a match made in heaven. Hannah Doody meets the musicians who are exploring the realms of food and beyond through their venues.

BEN CORBETT, SIX FT HICK THE LOW ROAD CAFE What inspired you to start up The Low Road Cafe? The realisation that hospo life is the only life that Naomi and I are both suited to, coupled with the fact that we’re both completely unemployable in any other profession. What can people expect from a visit to The Low Road? We are casual on the surface and uncompromising at the core. We know our strengths and we play to them. We know what’s best for you. We like to cause trouble. Our food is amazing because we use an insane amount of fresh herbs in everything. What inspired the décor and the name? The décor is inspired by our love of rock and roll, the mid-century aesthetic and a limited budget. “The Low Road” is the name of one of my favourite albums by Australian legends Beasts of Bourbon. Tell us about your band, Six Ft Hick? Six Ft Hick is now in its 21st year. We’ve never taken a break longer than a couple of months. We’re less a band and more a chronic illness that

14

we’ve all learned to live with despite the occasional flare-up. How do you think your love of music influences The Low Road Cafe? We play a lot of music that you won’t hear anywhere else, and we’re constantly updating our playlists. Most of the people on our staff are either in touring bands or active in the Brisbane music scene, which makes rostering a nightmare. What do you love about Brisbane? Brisbane’s cultural cringe and play‑it‑safe legislation means that people have to make their own fun or let boredom reign. This results in some great art, performance and music that is often more appreciated elsewhere. Plus the weather is nice, I guess. Where will we find you… on a Saturday night? More of the same – working hospo, playing rock and roll. It’s a good way to live. … on a Sunday morning? Working bar at The Low Road, or being dragged out of bed by a disarmingly cheerful toddler.

Ben Corbett, Six Ft Hick

JOHN COLLINS (JC), POWDERFINGER THE TRIFFID What inspired you to start The Triffid? My original thought was to open a bar in the area, so I had started looking for opportunities. During the search process, I realised that my passion and history in music offered a unique knowledge of venues and their operation so that’s where the idea started from. Where did the name “The Triffid” come from? In my younger years, I went to a venue in the Valley called Chrysalids to watch The Church play. That name resonated with me so when it came to naming the venue, that theme was in the back of my mind. I was familiar with the John Wyndham book illustrating the fictitious plants called the triffids, and when I watched an SBS Special on The Triffids band I realised it would be a good fit for our unique venue. What can people expect from a visit to The Triffid? Its most unique feature is that it’s an old World War II hangar, which not only provides a different shape to other venues, it is also a great foundation

for the acoustics. We also used shipping containers for the bars and amenities. While our distinct venue has the benefits of a music venue, you don’t have to see a band; you can just come in and hang out. How do you think your past in the music industry has shaped The Triffid? Travelling for 20 years in a touring band has been a significant insight into what amenities the bands appreciate and what punters want to see. With The Triffid’s capacity of 800, we have a really good sized room, the production levels are great quality but it’s still an intimate performance. What do you love most about Brisbane? I love the climate. I love that the people are more relaxed here, and we are so privileged to be living on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful places in the world. Where in Brisbane will we find you… on a Saturday night? Either at The Triffid watching a good band, or hanging out with family and friends. … on a Sunday morning? Sleeping!

John Collins (JC), The Triffid

KEELAN BIJKER, THE JUNGLE GIANTS TWO DONKEYS What inspired you to open Two Donkeys? Touring is basically just hanging out in cafés, bars and venues so when the opportunity came up to start one myself I figured I’d give it a crack. What can people expect from a visit to Two Donkeys? Apart from being filled with all the things I love, we are the first café in Brisbane with Blackboard Coffee, which comes from a small niche coffee roastery out of Burleigh Heads. The guys are great and the coffee is even better. We also try to stock as much local stuff as possible with local fruit and veg as well as bread from Crust & Co, and beer from Newstead Brewing Co. What inspired the décor and the name? The name “Two Donkeys” is a throwback to my childhood pets Poppy and Lucy, a pair of miniature donkeys. I found the décor super challenging; I’m not a designer and I’ve never had the opportunity to design a space before, so basically I just trawled Pinterest. Tell us about your band, The Jungle Giants? Fresh out of high school, I started playing drums in The Jungle Giants. Five stylemagazines.com.au

years later, I still love every second of it. Playing with all the guys and working with the tight little team we have is awesome – just a bunch of mates hanging out. Do you think there is a connection with your love of music and Two Donkeys? Definitely! Our head barista is Spencer White (the front man of Morning Harvey) and Sam Sargent, who did the fit-out, plays drums in The Belligerents and Moses Gunn Collective. We get to play the music we love in Two Donkeys and I’m also hoping to open for Friday nights with DJ sets from local bands. What’s next for you? Growing Two Donkeys, and there’s a tour for The Jungle Giants coming up in June and Splendour in July. So hopefully I can juggle both! Where will we find you… on a Saturday night? Hanging out with friends, going to warehouse parties or hanging out at one of the breweries. Most of the places I go fit into one of those categories. … on a Sunday morning? In my bed, sleeping in. Normally I’m up at 4.30am to get the door open so on Sundays I savour my sleep-ins with my puppy, Hatsy.

Keelan Bijker, Two Donkeys

“TAPPING INTO YOUR LATENT CREATIVE SIDE IS JOINING MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS AS THE LATEST KEY TO PERSONAL GROWTH, WORK-LIFE BALANCE AND ULTIMATE SUCCESS.”

THE ARTIST WITHIN Forget mindfulness – the ability to unlock your inner creativity could be the key to happiness, writes Hannah Doody. IT’S NO SECRET we’re living through the heyday of the self-help book. From adult colouring books to advice on health and wellness and how to declutter your life – if you have a problem, there’s probably a book about it. But one book in particular is experiencing a new wave of popularity. First published in 1992, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron is a 12-week program focused on recovering your creativity from a variety of blocks, including limiting beliefs, fear, self-sabotage, jealousy, guilt and other inhibiting forces. Once you identify these blocks, you can replace them with artistic confidence and productivity. Julia Cameron believes we are all creative in some way – it’s just about having the will to embrace it. So why is Cameron’s book experiencing this sudden resurgence? These days, we’re all Instagram curators, wordsmiths of the Facebook status and 15-second video filmmakers. Our world is filled with different avenues for creativity 16

and the opportunities for exploration are endless. Maybe people want to make their mark in a sea of creativity? Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that our fast-paced modern world is burning us out. More and more often, people want to be involved with something different and meaningful, whether it’s returning to nature, creativity or connectedness. Truly tapping into your latent creative side is joining meditation and mindfulness as a key to personal growth, work-life balance and ultimate success. But for those of us who aren’t interested in whipping out the knitting needles, clinical psychologist and co-founder of Melbourne’s The Mind Room Dr Jo Mitchell says the outlet really depends on the individual. “Humans have the amazing capacity to generate ideas or products that are original and valuable,” Dr Mitchell says. “It’s not necessarily about monetary value; it’s about value for us emotionally, socially and culturally.”

According to Dr Mitchell, many people have a narrow view of what they perceive as “creativity”. However, the definition of the word according to Oxford Dictionaries is “the use of imagination or original ideas to create something”. This implies that there are many ways in which a person can be creative. “I can be creative when I produce a piece of artwork or writing, but I can also be creative when I write my PhD or engage in another form of less obviously creative work,” explains Dr Mitchell. “It’s that ability to let the mind move into spaces and places where you can find connections and themes.” Finding your creative outlet has never been easier or more accessible. From creative workshops in pottery and macramé to classes where you can make your own lipstick or learn some hip hop moves, there’s something for even the most left-brained of us out there – you just have to be willing to give it a go. ’TIL DEATH DO US PART

Jonathan Ford and Tom Sweep

The duos behind Pineapple Express and Twice Blessed share their secrets to success, writes Leith Wilson. TOM SWEEP AND Jonathan Ford had been friends for more than 10 years when mutual friends approached them with a concept for a new superfood café in 2014. One year later, Pineapple Express was born. Now with more than 23,000 followers across Facebook and Instagram, Jonathan puts the success of the business down to their partnership. “If you don’t share the same vision, you will slip up at some point down the track because you are both not driving in the same direction,” he says. But no partnership is without its challenges; Tom and Jonathan agree they were a bit more confrontational in the early days. Nowadays, they’ve learnt to respect and listen to each other’s opinions whenever they’re faced with conflicting ideas.

18

“You need to learn how to be diplomatic with your partner and rational and reasonable whenever you can,” Tom says. Sisters and identical twins Marissa and Bec Karagiorgos of fashion blog Twice Blessed agree that having similar desires and interests is the foundation of any successful partnership. While both note they work at high capacity separately, they know that coming together is their real strength. “I am more emotional and like to take risks, whereas Marissa is more level-headed and reserved,” says Bec. This balancing act has seen Twice Blessed rocket to more than 80,000 followers in a mere three years. Above all, Marissa and Bec advise making sure

Marissa and Bec Karagiorgos

you and your partner are on the same page before starting a business. “There is nothing worse than entering into a partnership or business with someone who won’t carry the same weight as you,” they say. “In a team environment, you’re only as effective as your partner or your team. So make sure your plans, goals and work ethic match up before you make any formal agreements.” READ MORE ONLINE

WHEN OLD BECOMES NEW Our purchases may eventually become landfill, but there are ways to make a change, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. DID YOU KNOW Australia is one of the top five waste producers in the world? As a country, we send about 19 million tonnes to landfill each year. Now, many in Brisbane are making it their mission to create a more sustainable society by repurposing things in innovative ways. Based in Woolloongabba, not-for-profit cooperative Reverse Garage has been promoting environmental sustainability and resource reuse for 18 years and counting. Anne Giacomantonio of Reverse Garbage explains, “We are specialists in taking a good look at something and imagining the many ways it could be creatively reused or DIY-ed into something that is loved.” Collecting donated materials such as fabric, cork, wood, rope and metals of all kinds, Reverse Garbage is committed to making sure that, as a

society, we completely exhaust the potential of an item by repurposing everything possible – right down to the reuse of remnants and discards. Other popular sustainable initiatives are also celebrating the revival of old wares in Brisbane, with the likes of SWOP Clothing Exchange and Undress Runways taking up the cause. Both initiatives are fashion concepts with a difference; SWOP Clothing Exchange purchases and resells a sustainably-sourced collection of vintage and preloved clothes and accessories, while Undress Runways gives new life to preloved garments when showcasing a runway collection from sustainable designers around the world. With initiatives like these, we can continue to keep fashion truly unique with no-waste wearable pieces that come with a story.

REVERSE GARBAGE IS COMMITTED TO COMPLETELY EXHAUSTING THE POTENTIAL OF AN ITEM BY REPURPOSING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE – RIGHT DOWN TO THE REUSE OF REMNANTS AND DISCARDS.

Jordan Anderson

ONE TO WATCH Fresh, cohesive and wearable: three words Jordan Anderson uses to describe his fashion label, Elvrik, writes Leith Wilson. JORDAN ANDERSON’S COLLECTION, Global Citizen, came to life when he returned from a year-long exchange program to Berlin, during which he visited more than 13 countries. Jordan’s designs are a combination of bold prints and boxy cuts with an edgy twist, all inspired by the feel-good Disney film Cool Runnings, the iconic TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and ’90s sportswear. According to Jordan, the creative process (part of his QUT degree) gave him valuable insight into what it would be like to work in the industry. “The process takes place over two semesters, where you have time to formulate a concept for the collection, toile and sample garments prior to making the final product,” he says. Returning from his exchange program a 22

semester later than the rest of the students and sourcing his fabric from Italy put Jordan’s manufacturing process behind, leaving him with just eight days to sew the whole collection! The time frame didn’t deter Jordan, who worked 16-hour days to bring his vision to life, spurred on by a strong work ethic and will to succeed. Jordan’s talents have not gone unnoticed after his graduation; this year, he won the prestigious iD Dunedin Emerging Designer Award. Passionate about creating an art form that enables individuals to express themselves and create their own identity, Jordan is determined to make a name for himself in the industry. Where does he see himself in five years? Creative Director of his Elvrik label, of course.

DESIGN DUO Inspired by dewy autumn mornings comes Moss, the latest Dinosaur Designs collection, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.

INSPIRED BY EARTH, ROCKS AND FLOWERS, THE MOSS COLLECTION IS A WONDERFUL PALETTE OF LUSH GREENS REMINISCENT OF ANCIENT MOSSES THAT CARPET FOREST FLOORS AND THRIVE ON THE RICH SOILS THAT LIE UNDERFOOT.

FOLLOWING A PHILOSOPHY of colour and form, Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy combine design and art to create the other-worldly resin jewellery and homewares of Dinosaur Designs. The duo began working with resin as students at art school; they say it was their shared passion for creating beautiful pieces that first brought them together, and they feel incredibly lucky to be able to work side-by-side as a couple. Louise and Stephen admit that they never really stop thinking about design and art, which is why they find living and working together so easy. The pair works out of a light-filled studio in Sydney’s Strawberry Hills, where they create and develop their designs and produce every resin piece by hand. Although it is a place of work, their studio is like an extension of their home and the couple believes that having a happy environment has a big impact on what’s created and produced in it. Every eclectic piece is crafted sustainably in their studio, passing through many pairs of hands in the process, giving each piece the slight differences that make it unique. The pair’s now refined aesthetic has constantly evolved over the years; though they’ve mastered their techniques, they are always surprised by the possibilities that arise from working with resin. 24

Louise and Stephen are always asking “What’s next?” They love how adding elements of silver, brass and glass can create a contrast in textures, all of which adds to the creative process and journey of their products. Dinosaur Designs’ latest collection, Moss, introduces new classic brass jewellery and homewares, rendered in shapes that connect directly with nature. Inspired by earth, rocks and flowers, the Moss collection is a wonderful palette of lush greens reminiscent of ancient mosses that carpet forest floors and thrive on the rich soils that lie underfoot. Louise says of the collection, “We are constantly inspired by nature and the time it takes her to grow and change and perfect. We are immensely proud of some of the new castings that are coming through in shades of green and dark horn swirl, to which we’ve added accents of gold and brass in the new collection of classic pieces.” Having been at the creative forefront of design and fashion for many years, Dinosaur Designs is known and loved for its unique jewellery and homewares; Moss is the latest in a long line of ever-evolving collections. AARON WOOLARD HAS BEEN VOTED THE MOST RECOMMENDED AGENT IN NEW FARM.*

CITY FRINGE

*As voted on ratemyagent.com.au

Style chats to leading Place Estate Agent Aaron Woolard about trends, tips and tricks for New Farm and Teneriffe. What are the trends in home sales at the moment? The New Farm and Teneriffe area is really starting to evolve as a community. There’s a fresh energy with all the new construction and lots of apartments being sold; however, the older properties such as the beautiful Queenslanders are still very much in demand. What do you love about the New Farm and Teneriffe area? For me, it’s the lifestyle. The ability to have peace and quiet, combined with that vibrant, community feel with everything at your doorstep is something totally unique to the area. With all the amazing coffee shops, restaurants, bars, parks and the river walk, it ticks every box. What tips can you offer someone looking to

buy in this area? Look for a property with unique qualities. Either a view, a great size, heritage value (such as the Woolstores), or sticking to quieter river streets will offer better long-term capital growth and will help differentiate your property from the newer apartments around. Tell me about the property you recently sold at 6/5 Langshaw Street, New Farm? During the campaign, we met with more than 60 buyers who were drawn to this beautiful property because of its charm, location and size. It sold at auction for $775,000, setting a new benchmark for Art Deco properties in the area. AARON WOOLARD – PLACE 5/572 BRUNSWICK ST, NEW FARM P 0421 145 386 E: AARONWOOLARD@EPLACE.COM.AU

TAKE ON BEING

ACTIVE

Take On The World

Christie Sutherland caught up with the inspiring force behind our cover, Brisbane’s own Lorna Jane Clarkson, to talk all things Active Living. HERE IN BRISBANE, we have access to quality, fresh produce and a beautiful climate that lends itself to outdoor exercise all year round. Yet our health statistics continue to alarm, with Queensland obesity rates now approaching those of the United States. Obesity has been linked to life-threatening conditions including heart attacks and some cancers. It is also one of the major contributors to Queensland’s rising rate of type 2 diabetes. So who better to offer health and wellness tips than the creator of the Active Living philosophy, Lorna Jane Clarkson? Active Living is her personal philosophy and Lorna Jane is dedicated to moving, nourishing and believing every day- Move Nourish Believe a practice that has evolved into a global movement. You are living proof that being active works; tell us more. Active Living makes being fit and healthy really easy because it breaks it down into a daily practice that anyone can fit into their life. It’s doing some form of movement every day, giving your body the nutrients it needs to think and perform at its best and going forward each day with a positive mindset. This leads to a happier and healthier life that empowers you with an abundance of energy and is vital for long-term wellbeing and improving your mental health. We can choose to do anything, but not everything in life – that’s why it’s important to know your priorities. What are your tips for the younger generation or anyone else starting their Active Living journey? Sometimes, I think the hardest part is starting. It might seem more enticing to keep hitting the snooze button and stay under the covers, but I guarantee as soon as your workout is done, you will feel so much better for it! I think it’s about taking small steps in the right stylemagazines.com.au

direction to ensure you are building a sustainable way of life and creating long-lasting habits. Always try to do what you enjoy as you’re more likely to keep up your enthusiasm. We all have the ability to achieve great things. Sometimes we can plateau, lose motivation or throw in the towel completely. But the most important lesson is to get back up again and keep on going. So what’s next for the Lorna Jane brand? I’m passionate about educating the next generation on the importance of health and wellness. I have

started conducting Active Living talks and “Move” classes in schools to share what Active Living is all about. During their school years, young people are reaching a point where they are beginning to make life choices for themselves. If we can teach this mindset and approach to the next generation, they will experience huge health benefits later in life and so will their children! We also have our fifth annual Active Nation Day coming up on September 25. This day is dedicated to Active Living and is an internationally-recognised celebration that reminds people to put their health first and encourage others to do the same. THE FACE AUSTRALIA LOVES

PHOTOGRAPH: PRICELINE

Samantha Harris speaks to Caitlyn Spanner about her massive career and how she remains down-to-earth in a not-so-down-to-earth industry.

44

DION LEE, ELLERY and Vogue are just a few of the big names Samantha Harris has modelled for throughout her stellar career. She’s become a household name with an even more recognisable face. Her bold brows, full lips and high cheekbones have made the likes of Kirstie Clements, Justine Cullen and Chic Model Management stand up and take notice. Discovered at the age of 13 alongside Abbey Lee Kershaw in Girlfriend Magazine’s model search, Samantha has gone from strength to strength in her career. But the 5”10 beauty is careful not to let the success go to her head. Born and raised by the beach, Samantha cherishes her upbringing at Tweed Heads. “Our home was always busy with lots of family and friends dropping in and staying for periods of time,” she says. Family has been the fundamental support driving her career. Samantha says her mum regularly visits and they have a very close relationship. “Luckily I speak to my mum every day,” says Samantha. “She is my rock.” Her down-to-earth attitude is evident in her approach to social media. Scroll through the comments on any one of Samantha’s Instagram photos and you’ll see that she actually takes the time to speak to young fans. “Young kids who reach out to me and want to share their stories bring me back down to earth when I’m working,” she says. “I make a big effort to respond to everyone.” Despite her role as a Priceline ambassador and working on several modelling jobs a week, Samantha’s morning ritual is as typical as the next person’s. “Normally I get up at 6am, go for a run or to the gym then make a protein shake for breakfast,” Samantha says. After spending most days working six to eight hours shooting for editorial or advertorial campaigns, she finishes off the night just like everyone else. “At night I sometimes go to a social event, otherwise I am tucked up in bed, watching my favourite shows, My Kitchen Rules and Home and Away.” Her relaxed approach to fame and a hectic schedule keeps Samantha grounded and makes her the sort of role model young Australians need in a world ruled by social media and image. A BROKE GIRL Prue Richardson (A Broke Girl's Blog) has no intention of slowing her blogging habits any time soon. With mid-year sales around the corner, she shares her tricks on sticking to a budget, writes Christie Sutherland.

Prue Richardson

BACK IN 2014, Prue Richardson created A Broke Girl’s Blog with the simple desire to share her fashion finds and love of bargain hunting with friends, family and like-minded lovers of fashion. Two incredibly successful years later, Prue boasts an impressive 22,000 followers on her Instagram account and is working to expand her platform to create “consistent content that’s easy to navigate, readily available and useful in day-to-day life”. In the future, Prue also hopes to branch out into travel content with advice on seeing the world on a broke girl budget. On the positive response to her love of bargain hunting, Prue says, “It was surprising but awesome to see that people enjoyed it.” What’s your advice on finding a quality bargain in a mid-year sale? Know what you’re looking for. We’ve all felt the regret that follows bags on bags of unwanted items purchased in the excitement of that red sale tag. Remember to give yourself a budget. What’s your top tip for budgeting when you have a love for fashion? Spend wisely, shop investment pieces and try to avoid being trenddriven. I’m all about the cost per wear. To work out whether or not a piece is worth your hard-earned cash, you’ve got to get down and dirty and do a little division. If you are going to splurge, make sure it’s on items you can see yourself wearing a lot in the future. That’s how you’ll make the most of your money and have good return on investment (yep, shopping just got serious). What should we be looking to splurge on? Makeup is definitely a weakness of mine and probably the one thing I splurge on consistently. I can’t resist Mecca, but when I’m low on cash I’ll head straight to Priceline. stylemagazines.com.au

Where do you find better bargains – online or in-store? Both have their perks. Shopping online is great if you want to find things quickly, effortlessly shop between stores and sort your prices from “low to high” (guilty), plus you’ll generally find a hefty sale section available. But then there’s the wait for shipping and the chance of something not looking or fitting how you expected. If you have the time, shop in-store. It’s easier to say no to items if you aren’t 100 per cent certain, plus when you try things on you can quickly rule out a lot of items you thought you liked. How do you personally justify the money you spend on clothes? It’s pretty easy for me to justify my spending because I practise what I preach 99 per cent of the time. Most of the time my purchases are carefully thought-out and there’s a lot of “smart” spending. When I go crazy in the cosmetics aisle, however, I just say to myself, “Treat yo’self... plus, you really need this illuminator.” How do you stop yourself when you’re about to make an irrational spend? If I’m shopping online, I actually empty my cart. If I’m still thinking about it in a few days or a week, I’ll go back and have another look. Nine times out of 10 I won’t end up looking at it again. It’s the same sort of process in-store: slowly back out of the store and think about the purchase. What is the best bargain you have ever found, and why do you consider it your best? My H&M Iconics genuine leather jacket. Always. Everyone is always searching for “the one” – the perfect jacket that’s always by your side. It was a UK-only style, which I found on eBay for about $300. When you think about a genuine leather jacket, that’s a pretty damn good cost. I can’t imagine my life without it! 47

ANDROGYNOUS DRESSING CAN be traced back to the emancipation of Queen Elizabeth I in the Tudor period. This milestone event was one of the first examples of women throwing off societal restraints, and other women soon adopted this style as a symbol of freedom and equality. Throughout the 20th Century, icons such as Katharine Hepburn, Twiggy and Diane Keaton in Annie Hall became champions of unisex fashions in their own unique ways. Today, androgyny has worked its way into everyday dressing on a whole new level – anything goes. The 2016 catwalks have seen everything from gals in guys’ clothes to gents in chandelier earrings. 48

GOLD STANDARD When it comes to her popular jewellery label, Fabienne Costa wants her designs to be more than aesthetically beautiful, writes Leith Wilson. WHEN YOU ASK Fabienne Costa, founder and creative designer of YCL Jewels, what she loves about making jewellery, she doesn’t hesitate: “It makes me feel full and whole. There is just an intense creative pull.” Though she started creating jewellery as a hobby at the age of 13, Fabienne hadn’t always planned on owning her own label. Having studied nursing at university, it wasn’t until she saw designers selling their jewellery at markets that something clicked. “I said to my partner, ‘You know what? I want to do that! That is what I want to do with my life!’ It was my calling,” says Fabienne. With fear churning in her stomach and zero savings, Fabienne launched YCL Jewels. A week later, she quit her secure job as a nurse. Fabienne admits that she basically lived on pasta and noodles for a year and a half while getting her business up and running. She may have been following her dreams but times were tough. “I didn’t have my first online sale until three weeks after our first Etsy shop opened,” says Fabienne. “Sales were slow, our designs weren’t

my style and my belief in myself and our brand was tested daily.” Fabienne made the brave decision to invest every last cent she had into reshaping the brand and creating the style she had envisioned. “I hustled hard and got our pieces on some pretty amazing women who perfectly aligned with our brand and ethos. Things grew pretty fast from there,” she says. Now shipping to more than 30 countries worldwide, Fabienne’s pieces, embedded with intricate and thoughtful detail, have been seen on the likes of Jennifer Hawkins and Delta Goodrem. “We believe that our YCL Women are wearing what they treasure daily,” says Fabienne. “It is so important that our pieces are imbued with heartfelt and uplifting energy.” Another important aspect for Fabienne is creating jewellery that is vegan and ethically produced. “We do not believe that humans, animals or the earth should suffer at the hands of our label,” says Fabienne. “Our jewellery is partly handmade by yours truly, and is partly ethically made in India by our incredible team over there.” With a view to paving a way in the fashion industry, Fabienne has a much deeper sentiment in mind for YCL. “I see YCL as a brand for women who are after jewellery that has not just been created for aesthetic purposes, but rather holds deeper meaning and inspires them throughout their days.” READ MORE ONLINE

A PRETTY PENNY

MUST HAVE Iro Ashville leather jacket

We all feel like indulging in a designer piece or two sometimes. Elle Raison shares how to decide what fashion is worth investing in. IN THE FAMOUS words of Carrie Bradshaw, “I like my money where I can see it – hanging in my closet.” But let’s be real, spending upwards of $1000 on a pair of shoes or a bag is a big decision. When choosing what fashion investments to make, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Accessories: Unlike our waistlines, the size of our feet and the need for a handbag rarely changes. It’s always a good idea to invest in accessories that will be put to regular use for years to come. Timelessness: Consider whether it’s a trend piece or something you’ll use season after season. If it’s a trend piece, forget it. That pineapple clutch is cute but do you really want to spend hundreds of dollars on something you’ll only use for a few months?

Prada Double bag

Practicality: A worthwhile investment is something you will get a lot of wear out of. Stick with neutral colours such as black and tan. These will complement most outfits. Quality: If you’re spending big bucks, stick to the designers known for taking pride in the quality and ethical standards of their garments.

FURNITURE SETS THE SCENE

SKIN LACKING LUSTRE?

EATING AROUND THE WORLD

WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING to create an intimate atmosphere in a large venue or give an existing area a more flexible configuration, bespoke or custom furniture pieces can really assist in creating a successful event space. Think colourful lounge pods for creative spaces, elegant armchairs and chaise lounges for weddings and even office furniture to create temporary meeting areas. Showroom displays for corporate tradeshows can certainly benefit here with instant workable conference and team spaces able to be created for almost any floor plan. Furthermore, clustered furniture pieces atop statement rugs make for standout installations for intimate events or on an even larger scale with shopping centres and other public spaces. Multiple settings can also draw the eye to create bold yet functional seating areas. With the flexibility to transport a vast range of items from Byron Bay to the Sunshine Coast (and beyond!), The Styled Group has all your furniture needs covered.

WITH WINTER UPON us, many people are already suffering from dry skin. Some instances of dry skin can be remedied quickly with the right treatment. Others are not so fortunate and can struggle with flaking and itching symptoms that only worsen as time goes on. The issue lies in the stratum corneum (the top layer of our skin), which is responsible for protecting our body from harmful substances and germs. When this layer is healthy, it ensures a fresh and supple complexion. But there are many factors that affect this protective barrier: • Age • Climate changes such as humidity • Sun exposure • Soaps, detergents and some medication • Diseases such as dermatitis and psoriasis In some cases, a bit of intervention is needed, not only for the treatment of dry and flaky symptoms but also as a preventative. Our clinic is well-equipped for both regimens. Let us help you keep your skin on the right track!

EXPERIENCE INTERNATIONAL FLAVOURS at these unmissable locations. Sirocco, Bangkok: You can’t leave Bangkok without visiting this iconic rooftop restaurant. Enjoy dinner on the 63rd floor before cocktails at the celebrated Sky Bar perched on a precipice overlooking the city. The Ritz Hotel, London: High tea at The Ritz is an institution in itself and the quintessential British experience – The Palm Court room is something to behold. Picasso, Las Vegas: Dinner at Picasso is a must in Vegas – French and Spanish cuisine overlooking the famous Fountains of Bellagio and surrounded by original works of art. It’s a little expensive so hopefully you’re feeling lucky at the blackjack table on the way in! Angelina, Paris: Lining up morning, noon or night is a given at Angelina but oh so worth it. Think chocolate. Anything chocolate. Sip one of their famous hot chocolates while walking through the Tuileries Garden. Oh, and did we mention chocolate?

PAINTING TO SELL

WHY BUY A TOWNHOUSE?

ON THE STEAM TRAIN

BUYING A HOME is an emotional experience. When owner-occupier buyers find a property they love, they are more likely to place an offer closer, if not equal to the asking price with a sense of urgency. But an investor’s obvious priority is to look for a great return on their properties. Unlike potential owner-occupiers, investors buy with statistics and, where possible, emotions do not play a part in the decision-making process. In either case, the aesthetic of your home can greatly improve its saleable value. Painting is often considered a quick fix, but a cheap quote for a project should be taken with a grain of salt. A constant stream of touch-ups can lead to delays in placing your property on the market. Generally, a buyer (owner-occupier or investor) isn’t looking to place additional funds into rectification of quick fixes, such as painting, just before sale. While intended to improve sale price and achieve a shorter time on the market, cheaply touching up your property can have a detrimental effect when selling.

A QUALITY TOWNHOUSE located within eight to 15 kilometres of the Brisbane CBD offers buyers a potentially great opportunity for maximum gain. Here are six reasons why: • They allow buyers to capitalise on the forecast growth of the detached housing market. • Owner-occupiers and investors are demanding larger product, higher quality finishes and better value for money. • Many baby boomers are currently looking to downsize in suburban locations. • They offer land content which is appealing to discerning investors, given the importance of the land value equation. • As detached housing in high demand suburbs isn’t always affordable for families and DINKS (double income no kids), townhouses provide a favourable outcome without excessive compromise. • They provide greater space than most apartments, which is more appealing for users who enjoy entertaining guests in private outdoor areas.

DIGITAL EYE STRAIN

THE EOFY CLEAN-UP

IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU!

THE 2016 ERNST & Young digital study revealed Australians spend at least 10 hours a day in front of digital screens, and about two thirds use three or more devices to connect to the internet. Usually held very close to the face, digital devices such as smartphones and tablets have lower resolution and contrast than a printed page, which can cause strain on the eyes. But as technology advances, so too do spectacle lenses, with manufacturers launching new lens products to reduce the eye strain commonly caused by these gadgets. New lens ranges, targeted at those aged 20 to 50 years, can help relax eye focus for short distances. Blue light filters also enhance contrast without changing the colours on screens and anti-reflective lens coatings filter out harmful blue light from digital screens and indoor lighting. It is our priority to stay in line with the latest technology in digital lens design for optimum vision when using progressive and occupational lenses. We offer our clients the best quality coatings to enhance their vision further.

LOOK AT YOUR desk. Can you actually see it beneath all the clutter? By trying to keep everything on hand, we end up working in a mess! This can seriously impact our ability to think clearly. Here are some tips for decluttering: Keep your desk simple. Only keep files of projects you’re currently working on, your computer, a working pen, stapler and notepad. Manage paper. Make a decision immediately. Bin it, file it with current working projects, put it in a general reference file or stow it with the other “someday I will do something with this” papers. Clear your other desktop. If you can’t see your home screen beneath all your icons, you need to delete some or put them in a folder. Use visual aids. Use a whiteboard to workshop ideas and keep yourself motivated with pictures of inspiring quotes or people. Organise meeting notes. Either action them (put deadlines in your calendar) or file them. If you’re finished with the notes, scan them for your records and then bin them! Remember: clean desk, clean mind!

WHEN CHOOSING A rental property for investment purposes, do you follow your gut, head or heart? Consider all of these, but make sure the renter’s perspective holds the greatest sway. Ask the questions a renter would ask: • Is there a toilet separate to the bathroom? • Are the bedrooms large enough to fit a queen or double bed? • Is there enough storage space? • How many bedrooms are there? It’s easier to raise rent if you have more bedrooms, as there are more sleeping quarters. • Are there enough bathrooms? If you want a property with three to four bedrooms, ensure it has more than one bathroom. • Does it have multiple living zones? There’s nothing worse than a share house with only one living area. While future tenants may not own the property, it’s important to choose and design a space that will allow them to take pride in their home. Well-presented properties with an inviting owneroccupier feel will always attract superior rent.

TOP TIPS FOR IPHONE USERS

FOR GUYS, CHOOSING the perfect engagement ring can be an all-consuming task. Will your partner want a simple style, or maybe something a little more extravagant? Combine this with the pressure of creating a magical proposal and it can seem like an incredibly daunting experience! Guys have to think about what kind of proposal their partner has been dreaming about; a private affair or maybe something elaborate, worthy of YouTube? Do you want to take all this stress away? Of course you do! Why not think outside the box and propose in an exotic location? Combining a romantic getaway for the both of you with the perfect proposal will not only create memories that will last a lifetime but it is sure to earn you extra brownie points with your new fiancée. Until the end of July, you’ll receive a sevennight stay in Fiji when you purchase your engagement ring from us. Check out our website or visit us in-store for details. Go on – what are you waiting for?

NATIVE ADVERTISING IS one of the biggest buzzwords in online publishing and is the key to reaching digital audiences. But what is it? Native advertising isn’t about ads; it’s about engaging, editorial-style content that appears in the context of the user’s experience. For it to work, it needs to be: Good content: Something the audience wants to read and share with friends. It needs to resonate with, entertain and/or educate readers – preferably all of those things. Inspired by the brand: What are the brand’s values? What content can you create to send the brand’s message? Aligned with editorial: It needs to look and feel the same as other content by the company. Obvious that it’s sponsored: But so good that the readers don’t care. Dove and Pandora offer great examples of native video campaigns that are on brand and resonate with audiences across the world. The native articles created by the Style Magazines digital team are ticking all the boxes, including the needs and goals of our advertisers.

IT’S ONE OF your most used accessories: your iPhone. Here are some things we forget to consider which will help us get the most out of these devices: Extend your ringtone. Customers often tell us they have trouble getting to their phone before the call ends. On any Telstra device, you can extend your ringtone to 30 seconds by dialing **61*101**30# on your phone. Do not disturb. Many people are unaware of this function, which is great if you are in meetings. It stops incoming calls or texts, sending them straight to MessageBank. Simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen on your Apple device and select the moon icon. Rest and reboot. Just like you, your phone needs a break every now and then. Turning your phone completely off for a few minutes every few days can reduce the risk of freezing and overheating. To reboot your device if you are experiencing difficulties, hold down your home and power buttons for 5 seconds.

WINTER CARE FOR PLANTS

CHANGE A MAN’S PATH

AS AN EX-JOURNO, I know very well just how many press releases are sent to a publication on any given day. I also know what it takes to rise above the rest and to get your story heard (and published!) Here are some tips our PR team utilises everyday to create campaigns with real impact. Create a high impact press kit: From a custom gift box to a product bedecked with balloons, ensure your media pack stands out from the rest. Make it short and sweet: Incorporate all relevant detail - content as well as quotes, however try to keep to one page. Keep it easy: Ensure all contact information is easily to hand including phone numbers, websites and social media handles. Follow Through: Don’t forget to pick up the phone! See if the press release has been received and if you can provide any further details. Say ‘Thank You’: Journalists are still human! If you see your name in print express your appreciation – whether in a hand-written note or even an email is just common courtesy.

PLANTS NEED LOVING all year round, but in winter they’re going to need that extra bit of help to be at their very best. Here are three tips to give your plants the care they need through the chilly months: • Plants get cold too! Try to keep them away from cold draughts as it can dry them out and leave them looking a little bit under the weather. • Even though most houseplants don’t need as much water during the winter season, keep your plants hydrated. Once a week, test the moisture level. If the soil is dry at half a finger deep, water thoroughly and allow the water to drain completely. • Keep the watering consistent. If you water your plants once a week, make sure you stick to the same day every time. This way you don’t miss waterings. • Winter is a great time to clean your plants as well. Removing accumulated dust and dead leaves will help the plant breathe and keep it looking its best.

ON MAY 19, Suit of Change Day was held to raise awareness about the benefits of passing on preloved menswear. We collected more than 1500 items and each of these items will go to the men who really need them. We are helping men who don’t have the resources to look and feel great. It is about raising their confidence and self-belief. Our role is also to collect and distribute clothing to charities and help these charities dress men for job interviews. One of the charities we have partnered with is Suited to Success, a Brisbane-based organisation that helps people overcome barriers to employment. After they have been fitted out, we alter the clothing to ensure the fit is great and then we organise haircuts and headshots for their resumé. If you have any clothing you have been meaning to pass on, now is a great time to do so and we will ensure that it finds a new home with an appreciative owner. Donate today to Wil Valor or 111 Eagle St in the CBD.

FOOD+DRINK IN FOR A NICKEL

Tuna tartare

Take a shine to the nostalgic eats with a modern twist on offer at the Valley’s latest addition, writes Hannah Doody. THE THIRD VENUE for local business owners and lovers of great food and wine TJ and Kim Peabody, Nickel Kitchen & Bar will transport you to the dapper days of Fortitude Valley’s golden era of wining and dining. The Art Deco-inspired space is reminiscent of the Orient Express with its dark timber booths, plush blue chairs lining marble tables, and a mammoth chandelier made of wine glasses adorning the ceiling. Despite the swanky décor, there is a welcoming vibe from the staff, and I somehow know I would feel just as comfortable here for classy cocktails on a Friday evening, as I did at lunchtime in my jeans and t-shirt. The attention to detail is clear at Nickel; the two fresh bread rolls and butter in a cute copper pot, served on a wooden board is a lovely unexpected touch. To start, we order the tuna tartare. The salty tuna is counteracted beautifully with a thick layer of fresh, buttery avocado. For mains, I try the grilled Moreton Bay bugs with garlic rice, wilted spinach and lemon, (which complements the Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc perfectly). My fellow Styler tries the Barossa Valley chicken kiev, which is surrounded by colourful heirloom 58

vegetables and a side of truffled parmesan fries (delish!). The chicken kiev is creatively presented; it looks inviting and nothing like you’d expect. TJ tells us that this dish from yesteryear was a contentious addition to the menu during the planning stages. “When I told Chef Paul McGivern I wanted to do a chicken kiev, he said, ‘No way – you can’t possibly do that!’ But we did,” says TJ. “It’s a modern take on a classic dish and it is becoming one of our staple dishes.” To finish, we are treated to a spectacular Bombe Alaska with lemon curd and cherry gastrique, which is so moreish that I could have eaten the whole thing, despite it being designed to share. With the success of Nantucket Kitchen & Bar and NKB Express under their belt, it’s no wonder the Peabodys have set the bar even higher with the opening of Nickel. The range of hard-to-find dishes that everyone knows and loves is executed well, giving Nickel a recipe for success. I’m already looking forward to my return.

FARM FRESH There’s a new way to support farmers and local businesses and feel even better about your fruit and veg fix, writes Sarah McAlpine. LOCAL DUO KRISTEN and Trevor Ottaway have always been passionate about the environment, reducing waste and sourcing the most natural and fresh produce for their family. Their commitment to buying spray-free organic fruit and vegetables saw them spending their Saturdays picking and choosing from their friend Kel’s stall at the Jan Powers Farmers Markets in New Farm, and then topping up at a health food supermarket on the way home. The lengthy process meant that a lot of their weekend was chewed up in a bid to find the best food, and Kel was sometimes sold out by the time

they got there. Kristen asked Kel to make up a weekly box of produce for them, and Spray-Free Farmacy was born. Each week, Brisbane locals can order a box in any size from small to extra large, packed full with delicious, pesticide-free organic fruit and veg. The contents of the box change weekly based on what’s in season and what’s available at the farms, but can always be customised to include some of your preferred items. The bulk of the produce is sourced from Kel’s farm near Woodford, with apples and pears coming from Stanthorpe and Tenterfield. You can

also purchase eggs from Goomburra and raw, cold-pressed honey from Redland Bay. Weekly orders can be placed by midnight on Wednesdays to pick up on Saturday, and there are now 10 pick-up locations available across greater Brisbane. The boxes represent excellent value, with a small size starting at just $25. SPRAYFREEFARMACY.COM

YOU’RE SO VEIN

BROWS ON POINT

ONE FOR THE BOYS

YOU PROBABLY THINK this column is reserved for women. But that’s a common misconception; varicose veins do, in fact, impact both sexes. Research and our own experience at the clinic shows that men present much later and with more advanced cases of varicose veins, which can result in a greater risk of ulceration and permanent skin damage. It is thought that the reason for this is that often men are not so concerned about the visual appearance of the veins. However men can still suffer from symptoms such as aching legs or pain at night, particularly if their line of work requires them to be on their feet for long periods of time or if they participate in high intensity sport or fitness. If you’re worried about having to take leave from work after the procedure, you’re in luck! The non-surgical techniques now offered mean that you don’t have to take any time off work for recovery after treatment. And with our after-hours appointments, you could be walking out of the clinic within an hour or two.

HAVE YOU EVER wished your eyebrows would look just as good at home as they do when you leave your brow technician? We’ve all been there. If you want your brows to stay #onfleek, you need to know the tricks of the trade to enhance, care for and groom them to perfection. At The Brow Bar, our Arch Angels consult using our exclusive Brow Whispering and Face Reading process to deliver an experience catered to every individual brow. Ensuring that all of our clients feel safe and comfortable is the most important thing at The Brow Bar and our philosophy is simple: we focus on giving you the best brow and work from the eyebrow you were born with. There are no cookie-cutters or stencils here; every brow is absolutely unique and requires a professional to achieve the best shape. Our signature Brow Lift-Shaping service is a relaxing experience that will not only transform your eyebrows, but also educate you on the potential of your brows and ultimately help you to feel more confident.

ONE OF THE benefits of your own platelet-rich plasma is that it’s known to rejuvenate parts of the body. Many have turned to the treatment for facials and hair growth and it is now seen as a solution for male enhancement and performance. Known as the P-Shot, the non-surgical treatment uses the platelet-rich plasma extracted from your own blood, which contains rich growth factors, and then carefully introduces it into specific areas on the penile tissue. As natural healing occurs, it stimulates growth of healthy surrounding tissue with long-lasting results and minimal downtime. Now that penile augmentation can be carried out non-surgically, Cosmetic Image Clinics is proud to be the first clinic in Brisbane to offer this simple solution for men concerned with their size and performance. Cosmetic Image Clinics offers complimentary consultations for those searching for further information or to find out if this is the right treatment option for them. ENHANCING YOUR RESILIENCE

ABSENT DAD DISORDER

LADIES, LET’S TALK about period pain. These pains (or “dysmenorrhoea” if you want to use the fancy medical term) are not often talked about, so most women are unaware of what is normal. If you require the odd painkiller to keep the cramping, pelvic pains and menstrual pains at bay, this is totally normal. However, pains that double you over or prevent you from doing your normal activities could be a cause for concern. In-between these two extremes, there is a large grey zone. If you’re unsure about your period, talk to your GP. Your problem may be easily relieved with hormonal treatments such as the contraceptive pill. But if your problem is resistant to treatment or is severe, a referral to a gynaecologist is warranted. You could be suffering from other common problems including endometriosis, adenomyosis, polyps and hormonal imbalance which may require treatments ranging from nutritional supplements to tailored hormonal therapies and even surgery. If you have any concerns, talk to your GP about a referral.

HAVE YOU EVER wondered why some people are able to absorb knocks and come back stronger than ever? It’s the psychological quality resilience. Instead of letting struggles and failure overwhelm and drain their resources, they develop a range of ways to endure and flourish. Some of the factors that make one resilient include quality problem-solving, maintaining a positive attitude and a sense of optimism, perspective-taking, good emotional selfregulation, and the conscious choice to accept failures as useful feedback to learn from. After we fail, we need to adapt rapidly. Get up quickly, dust yourself off, and have a new strategy. Perseverance, staying focused on your passionate goals, being OK with delaying gratification and having inspirational friends are all factors that contribute to going the distance in good psychological shape. Resilient people have a clarity of outlook and repeated deliberate behaviours that enable them to change course as necessary while keeping their eye on the big picture. Go ahead, get some grit!

MEN CAN BE prevented from being good fathers if they have not finished boyhood. In order to be balanced and emotionallypresent adults, we require emotionally-present role models to teach us how to master partnership and respect between genders. For those of us saddened as we reflect on the unavailability of our fathers, the good news is that it is never too late to heal and pick up where we left off. Some of us didn’t finish being innocent children, disconnecting due to problematic events. Many of us were laden with confusing emotions and adult responsibilities our young hearts were not equipped to manage. While some of us with emotionally-absent parents may have learnt physical and intellectual skills in childhood, we can grow into emotionally illiterate adults with Absent Dad Disorder. We need to be a little more willing to tackle any emotional issues that still block our paths today. Let us also take time to be thankful for the males in our lives who taught us who we are and who we are not.

A-LIST BROWS Keeping your brows on point is serious business and should always be handled with care. HAVING TRAVELLED THE globe to perfect her trademark techniques, Chernae Silk has a passion to improve the brows of women everywhere around the world and help to enhance their youth, beauty and sensuality. In 2003, she opened The Brow Bar’s first Brisbane store. “Through my in-depth study of face reading, I offer the revolutionary concept labelled ‘Brow Whispering’, which is exclusive to The Brow Bar and is an exciting and insightful phenomenon,” explains Chernae. Brow Whispering is the method of understanding how to read a client’s facial features in order to personalise their experience and ensure they leave The Brow Bar feeling fabulous. “It’s definitely more than a quick wax and a cringe worthy tint!” Chernae says.

Despite many eyebrow-focused salons opening each year, The Brow Bar’s popularity continues to grow, as does its reputation as the home of Brisbane’s go-to brow experts. Now expanded to four beautifully-designed stores across Brisbane, The Brow Bar’s attention to quality and the promise that every client will receive immaculate service ensures the confidence of each client. Each salon has a number of highly-skilled brow artists known as The Brow Bar “Arch Angels”.

These gifted and hard-working Arch Angels always aim to ensure that every client feels comfortable and confident in their hands. The Brow Lift-Shaping service is a signature at The Brow Bar and is popular for women looking to maintain their shape, restore their brows after a plucking disaster or to simply keep their brows groomed to perfection. yourself only better

AT LEAST ONCE in your life, you’ve probably wished your skin was just that little bit clearer, brighter and plumper. You might even be wishing that as you read this. Did you know your pantry could be brimming with all the ingredients you need for beautiful skin? While these kitchen staples are often praised for their nutritional value, they’ll also do wonders for your skincare regimen.

OATS This breakfast food can become a gentle and soothing exfoliator. Grind oats in a mortar and pestle (or use instant oats), mix with honey and rub the paste onto your face and neck. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then gently wash off.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Combine one part apple cider vinegar and two parts filtered water and dab onto a cleansed face. This natural toner will lock in moisture, dissolve dead skin cells and minimise pores.

HONEY Used as a natural healer for thousands of years, the antibacterial and moisturising properties of honey make for a great face mask. Heat the honey slightly – not too much or you’ll burn yourself – and apply to your face. Leave for 15 minutes and then wash off. Prone to acne? Combine three tablespoons of honey with a tablespoon of cinnamon for a more potent anti-bacterial mask.

COCONUT OIL A makeup remover, cleanser and moisturiser in one, coconut oil is the perfect beauty product for a simple routine. The oil is extremely gentle, helping to remove makeup without pulling the skin. Use it as your evening moisturiser to make Orford your Evelyn face soft and plump.

HAIR-FREE AND CAREFREE Brooke Jesberg of Brooklyn Beauty Bar reveals the beauty treatment to get you ready for next summer! Brooke Jesberg

YOU KNOW WHAT winter is great for? Getting ready for summer. It’s also the best time for permanent hair reduction and skin rejuvenation. At Brooklyn Beauty Bar, our equipment is the best in the biz for getting rid of your unwanted hairy bits and smoothing out pigmentation, improving skin tone, anti-ageing, reducing broken capillaries and improving acne. There are quite a few IPL treatments and types of machinery out there, but ours is the best of the best and treats more skin types, hair colours and skin tones than any other machines. And, due to its unique cooling function and technology, the treatment is virtually pain-free. IPL doesn’t get much better than that! Many people have had nasty experiences with IPL, but this new technology works at a lower energy level that makes it extremely safe for almost

all skin types and conditions. It also provides a far quicker treatment than the old-fashioned equipment. Naturally, we are Laser Safety Certified and Spectrum Certified and our equipment is TGA and CE approved by the industry regulatory body. Since these treatments can make you a little sensitive to the sun, the cooler months are the ideal time to get them done. Now is the time to treat those pesky skin conditions and take that first step towards sexy smooth hairlessness with permanent hair reduction. If that isn’t enough to twist your arm hairs and book in for a consultation, then you must be... well, already hairless. FUSS-FREE TIPS

TWO-WEEK SKIN REHAB Self-confessed skincare stranger Sarah McAlpine tried all the tricks for 14 days. CONFESSION TIME! I don’t always take my makeup off before bed. I don’t go for regular facials, I don’t always moisturise and I almost never exfoliate. Luckily for me, my skin is pretty much always clear and usually isn’t affected by diet or hormone changes. I’ve always wondered, however, just what my skin could look like if I actually tried to take care of it. For 14 days, I did all the things you’re “meant”

to do. I used eye creams and at-home masks, I steamed my face, ate right, drank water and got eight hours of sleep every night. It definitely worked; friends, co-workers and my PT all told me that my skin looked much brighter. In a bid to save you time, I’ve chosen my top four fuss-free tips for improving the condition of your skin. Give them a try and see if these easy adjustments help your skin glow too!

Green supplements: I’ve been adding Activated Nutrients Daily Superfood for Women to my breakfast smoothies and I honestly believe this has made a massive difference to the quality of my hair, skin and nails. Double cleansing: First, I wash my face with a makeup removing cleanser. Then I follow up with a cream cleanser to balance out my skin. Vitamin E cream: Did you know pollution draws out the naturally occurring vitamin E in your skin, which can cause wrinkles? Vitamin E cream is also thought to reduce the depth and length of existing wrinkles. I started using Redwin Vitamin E and Evening Primrose Oil every night; you can grab it from Coles for under $5. CC Cream: I’ve swapped my regular foundation for a CC Cream, which goes on really easily and still covers any discolouration. It also allows my skin to breathe and doesn’t clog my pores.

STYLE TRIAL

Styler Kim Newland trials the non‑invasive, fat-destroying, 25-minute game-changer, SculpSure. NO MATTER HOW often we exercise or how strict our diet is, most of us have stubborn areas that just won’t budge. I know I do! Perfectly Smooth in Albion has the answer and I’ve decided to put it to the test. I have trialled the latest in fat-destroying technology with their non-invasive body contouring systems, SculpSure, which combats fat in unwanted areas. The 25-minute procedure destroys up to 24 per cent of treated fat cells with a controlled hyperthermic laser treatment that elevates adipose tissue temperature without damaging the surrounding tissue. 70

With only one SculpSure session needed before the body naturally eliminates the targeted fat cells, this treatment sounded too good to be true. Before starting my treatment, I had a brief consultation with the lovely staff at Perfectly Smooth. They instantly put my mind at ease and assured me I would be comfortable throughout the non-invasive treatment. The treatment itself was actually quite simple. All I had to do was lay back and relax as the SculpSure machine warmed my abdomen and diminished the fat cells. I was told that by continuing to massage my

BYE-BYE BULGE

legs in a circular motion with a dry brush posttreatment, I would keep the circulation flowing in my lymphatic system and would start to see positive results in as little as six weeks, with optimal results usually seen at 12 weeks. Only one treatment and no downtime necessary? This treatment is a game changer when it comes to fat burning and I can’t wait to compare my before and after photos at the 12-week mark. DESIRE TO INSPIRE When the family comes together, it always starts in the kitchen. THE KITCHEN IS the hub of the home, so when designing your new home or planning a renovation, it is vital to get the appliance selection right. Brisbane Appliance Sales is a family-run business with more than 26 years of industry experience. In a constantly evolving market, Brisbane Appliance Sales understands the importance of keeping their showroom and product selection current and on-trend with their clients’ style and functional requirements in mind. “We work closely with some of Brisbane’s leading designers and architects to ensure our showroom represents not only the latest in kitchen and laundry appliances but also offers clients an opportunity to see how they may be installed in a real-life kitchen layout,” says Daniel Mayne. CREATIVE FORCES Daryl Wark and Diane Lopes are bringing like-minded creatives together in their new sun-filled store, The Collective, writes Hannah Doody.

CLAIREC2806-V2

WITH NINE YEARS of friendship behind them, and their own stores Du Monde and Green Tangerine on Latrobe Terrace for many years, Daryl Wark and Diane Lopes have earned a reputation for sourcing hard-to-find items and lust-worthy décor. In November last year, the pair joined forces to open The Collective. With more than 10 years’

experience in the ups and downs of retail, Darryl says The Collective was built around the idea that the industry isn’t the same as it once was. “Customers want a completely different experience in 2016. They’re no longer content with stores and products that they can get online in the comfort of their home,” says Darryl.

COOKING WITH STEAM

Darryl describes The Collective as a destination space shared by two to four pop-up brands at any one time, showcasing a curated collection of products from local artisans, and with a view to extending internationally. Since opening, The Collective has hosted online store Willko among many others. Each pop-up has a minimum of six to eight weeks in the space, with many returning on a seasonal basis. The Collective also houses Daryl’s new concept, Interiors by Daryl Wark, which offers decorative items and homewares as well as a complete interior design service. Diane’s second instalment of Green Tangerine also calls The Collective home. With a different feel to its older Paddington sibling, this branch of Green Tangerine focuses more on artisan wares with a clean aesthetic. At least once a month, design classes will teach customers how to create the perfect space in their homes. The Collective will soon host watercolour and calligraphy classes with Julie from Scrumptious Reads in Fortitude Valley. TRAVEL From vintage shopping to the best cheesecake she’s ever eaten, NYC left its mark on journo Caitly n.

FROM BRISBANE TO BROOKLYN Caitlyn Spanner shares her travel diary from two weeks exploring New York City. NEW YORK. THE Big Apple. The Concrete Jungle. The City That Never Sleeps. Whatever you want to call it, the hype is very real! As soon as I stepped off the plane, I understood what everyone had been talking about all these years. I was in New York City for less than an hour before meeting writer and actress Lena Dunham at baggage collection. Exhausted from fangirling and plane-hopping, I left JFK Airport in a yellow cab and headed to Brooklyn Heights to meet my friend Charlotte, who was taking me in for two weeks. Living with a local made my trip that much sweeter. While I visited all of the classic tourist destinations, it was the interactions with locals and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that made my trip totally unique. Each day we would visit a local diner and eat like true New Yorkers. The food was definitely one of the highlights of my trip: I developed a penchant for pickles, grilled cheese sandwiches and mac and cheese; I scoffed Shake Shack in Brooklyn, Russian cuisine in the Flatiron District and paella in Chelsea. I came away a couple of kilos heavier, but seriously, #noregrets! As expected, the shopping was some of the best stylemagazines.com.au

I’ve ever experienced. I fell in love with new brands I’d never heard of, shopped in stores that I’ve always dreamt of visiting, bargain-hunted like a pro and played dress-ups in some of the world’s best vintage stores. Manhattan may be home to all the renowned locations beloved by locals and tourists alike, but I have to say I really fell in love with Brooklyn and Williamsburg. Quirky boutiques, unique dining options, basketball games, $1 doughnuts that could give Doughnut Time a run for its money and streets upon streets of interesting characters and culture had me head-over-heels for this area. I definitely recommend heading to the Top of the Rock rather than the top of the Empire State Building for a spectacular view of the city. Visit as many art galleries and museums as you can, catch a show on Broadway, walk the High Line, buy a cheesecake from the Magnolia Bakery and walk around as many areas as you possibly can to take in all this incredible city has to offer. Around every corner there’s something new for you to fall in love with, and that’s the true beauty of this magical place. READ MORE ONLINE
